Three Roman buildings survived more than 1,600 years in the heart of Chichester

Remarkable Roman finds

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk ARCHAEOLOGISTS have discovered foundations of complete Roman town houses under one of Chichester’s city centre parks and they are expected to be some of the most remarkable Roman finds yet.

THree almost complete Roman

buildings have been found, footings of which have survived more than 1,600 years in the centre of a thriving city.

THe scans appear to show two large masonry houses, which would now be the equivalent to Chichester’s grand Pallant House Gallery building, and would have been owned by someone of great importance. THe third building is of great interest because of its unusual shape.

Local geophysics specialist, David Staveley, used ground-penetrating radar equipment to scan the parks in Chichester.

Chichester District Council’s archaeologist, James Kenny, said: “What’s remarkable about this discovery is that it has survived over 1,000 years in a currently occupied city.

"THe only reason they have survived is because they are under a park that has

never been built on.

“It’s almost unique to see Roman houses survive in this type of setting and to be so complete.

“THe location marks what may have been one of the more affluent parts of the Roman Town, with these houses being the equivalent to a property worth millions of pounds in today’s society.

People unite with world in protest against Trump

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE in Chichester joined those around the world in a protest against the controversial inauguration of Donald Trump in the US. More than 100 banner drops took place last Friday as people across the world responded to the president's inauguration. A banner saying Bridges Not Walls was dropped at the bridge over the Lavant in Chichester at 12pm.

THe action, one of more than 100 planned in villages, towns and cities across the nation, is part of the Bridges not Walls project, an unprecedented partnership between grassroots activists and campaigners working on a diverse range of issues, formed in the wake of Donald Trump's election.

THe initiative began as the brainchild of Hastings ice cream man and homeless shelter worker Will Stevens in the aftermath of the shock US election result.

It has rapidly gained momentum

and is now being backed by a growing number of existing activist groups, community groups and larger campaign organisations.

Green Party city councillor Sarah Sharp said: "We need to come together to build bridges and heal divisions.

We are standing up for community, co-operation and kindness and want to encourage connections with our neighbours.

"THis weekend has seen marches and events all over the country to oppose the climate of fear and hatred which seems to be gaining ground.

"We in Chichester are proud to be a part of this global movement which stands up for shared values of respect for justice, dignity and human rights and protection of the marginalised."

Banners were unveiled in the capital cities of all four British nations as well as in Dublin.

Women around the world took part in marches on Saturday following President Trump's controversial comments about women in the past.

HOLIDAY park Bunn Leisure has embarked on an ambitious £14m refurbishment programme, which will create jobs and provide a welcome boost to the local economy.

Open day to bring in more firefighters FIREFIGHTERS in Selsey are hoping to boost their numbers and welcome potential new recruits when they hold an informal drop-in event at the town’s fire station this weekend.

THe station, which is crewed 24/7 by retained on-call firefighters, will be opening its doors between 10:30am and 3pm tomorrow.

Selsey’s crew will be joined by colleagues from East Wittering.

People can find out more about the life of a firefighter, see the vehicles and equipment at the station, learn about their prevention role and all the other services now offered by firefighters.

A shortage of retained firefighters often means that the fire engine can’t be crewed for emergencies in the town, with cover having to be provided from nearby stations like Chichester.

Station manager Stuart Beddoe said: "Our crews here now do a fantastic job and give tremendous service to their local community with the hours they give ‘on-call’, but we desperately need more of them.

“We have been trying to recruit more firefighters for some time, talking to local people, employers, community networks, using social media and putting on recruitment events."

A milestone year for popular library

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk IT'S been a staple part of the city and now Chichester Library has celebrated its 50th birthday.

Celebrations took place at the library in Tower Street on Tuesday. It officially opened to the public on January 24, 1967.

Members of staff past and present, councillors and members of the public gathered to mark the occasion.

Library manager Gareth Edwards said: "It's great because 50 years on, the service is going from strength to strength.

"In the 60's there were a number of cultural developments and Chichester Library was part of that.

"We are still here at the heart of cultural and artistic life.

"We get lots of people who still want to read real books and use the library as a community site.

"We are a place where people of all backgrounds can come and be together."

Councillor Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, was there. She said: "I think this is the most fantastic library going.

"It's alive, it's vibrant and the community can come in here and use it - read, educate, learn. What a fantastic facility.

"Our library service is still going strong.

We are still developing it. Last year we lent out four million books so that just shows the demand is still there and people still want to come in."

Author Peter Lovesey was also there to cut the cake.

He added: "It's a real pleasure to have this honour. I do love coming in here and I have been for 20 years."

THere was also a performance from the New Community Choir Chichester.

Other activities took place including an illustrated talk about the library, a storytime and games event and a murder mystery evening.

` Court decision on Europe is criticised UKIP'S parliamentary spokesman for Bognor Regis has vowed to fight against this week's court judgment about the Euro referendum.

Graham Jones said the decision of the Supreme Court to enable MPs to have a say in Britain's exit from the EU was disappointing.

"We cannot allow the will of the people during the referendum to be overturned by this chicanery and UKIP will continue to fight this injustice."

Matters such as 'Hard Brexit' or 'Soft Brexit' were not mentioned in the build-up to the voting.

"THese are descriptions which have come out after we voted, promoted mainly by those who wanted to remain in the EU. "THere was no mention that unelected judges would have a say in all this after we voted."

Mr Jones, who is UKIP's parliamentary spokesman for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, is also Felpham's county councillor.

Last June's referendum saw 56,936 vote to leave Europe - about 62 per cent - of those who took part.

He said it was time for the town's MP, Nick Gibb, to come clean about his intentions towards Europe and tell his constituents he will support the triggering of Article 40 of the Lisbon Treaty - signalling the start of Britain's formal exit from the EU when it comes to the Commons for ratification.

"If he is not prepared to do so, he must issue a public statement explaining why he will not do so," added Mr Jones.

Town rail route is subject of report CRUCIAL talks to settle the bitter rail strike will feature a report about the Bognor Regis rail link.

THe town's route to Horsham was the subject of a study by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on the impact of trains leaving stations after the drivers have operated their doors using CCTV screens.

Changes have been recommended by the regulator to ensure the driver-only operation is as safe as possible.

"THe inspector found that the quality of CCTV images varied but all were adequate, " the ORR's report stated.

"A recommendation has, however, been made to GTR-Southern to make improvements so that image quality is consistently high, including immediate improvement in the cleaning regime of external camera lenses.

"THe ORR also noted that the planning and notification ahead of the route becoming DOO dispatch did not appear to be well communicated."

THe opening and closing of the doors has caused nine months of disruption to Southern Railway services across its network. THe row began with the RMT union, which represents many of the conductors who will see their role operating the doors taken away, and spread to the train drivers' union, Aslef.

Aslef's decision to suspend its second set of three strike days this week has led to talks with Southern Railway hosted by the conciliation service, Acas, and the TUC. Tuesday saw the first normal timetable in operation for at least six months after Southern Railway initially scrapped some services for an emergency timetable.

THe ORR published its report about the dispute this month.

An ORR railways operations specialist inspector carried out tests, alongside a driver, between Bognor Regis and Horsham. THese studies took place during the day and night on 377 class trains.

THat section of the route to London has seen DOO operation brought in by Southern against the unions' wishes.

THe ORR inspector also said Southern and Network Rail should extend the provision of close door and right away indicators on stations that are staffed, where appropriate, to improve train leaving those locations.

Lighting at stations where it was below the standard needed for driver-only doors had to be replaced, or station staff used, before DOO came into effect. Sightlines along trains were also tested. Any safety failures which featured foilage or other matters were solved, the report said.

Ian Prosser, the HM Chief Inspector of Railways, said: "Following a thorough review of GTR-Southern's method and implementation of driver-only operation, ORR is satisfied that with suitable equipment, proper procedures and competent staff in place, it is a safe method of working."

Further inspections would take place.

Action would be taken if there was evidence of a breach of health and safety regulations, the ORR stated.

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said the report showed Southern's claims about the safety of DOO could only be achieved if a series of improvements was made before the practice went ahead.

Students visit special school for lessons in communication SIXTH form students at Felpham Community College swapped classrooms as part of their course.

THe health and social pupils showed their community spirit by helping at St Anthony's Special School in Chichester.

THe sixth formers have been studying how positive relationships are built and visited the school to try out some of their communication skills on the youngsters.

One of the students involved, Hayley Moses, said: "We worked with Years 3 and 4 and supported them in their music and food technology lessons."

Her fellow sixth former, Lauren Jones, said: "It was nice to help them with their tasks and get involved with what they were doing.

"It helped us show that positive relationships really help when communicating with people.

"Hopefully, we will have more field trips soon to practise what we are learning on our course.

Councillors give support to re-run of A27 consultation

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCILLORS have agreed to support calls for a re-run of the controversial consultation on the redevelopment of the A27 - including the two options which were previously dropped.

Chichester District Council will now formally request that a new consultation on improvements to the A27 around Chichester is carried out by Highways England. THey believe this should include a range of options, including the two previously developed northern bypass options.

THey also want Highways England to publish the results of the consultation, held between July and September of last year. A letter to the Secretary of State will be issued straight away.

It comes after transport secretary Chris Grayling said at a private function last month that there was a possibility of a rerun of the consultation.

Council leader councillor Tony Dignum said: "THe inadequate response from Highways England on the reasons for dropping the northern options leaves us at present with only one practical way of securing transparency and a full and open comparison of all the options: namely to take up the Secretary of State's apparent offer of a new consultation on a wider range of options.

“THis is not about the council favouring

a particular option, it’s about the transparency of the process and public confidence in the preferred option.

“THe council has agreed that we should now issue a formal request asking for a re-run of the consultation and for this to include all options.

"THis is one of the biggest issues facing our area and it is important that the consultation process is carried out fairly and transparently.”

run with concerns that it may lead to losing the funding for redevelopment in the first place.

But councillor Andrew Shaxson said: "Having considered the implications for some months, an increasing number of people are saying don't spend - in other words waste money - on the current options.

THe first incident, on Tuesday, January 17, happened at around 6pm as a woman wheeled her bike along Broyle Road.

A man approached her, made a sexual comment and then followed her before the victim rode off.

Just before 7pm, another woman walking her dog in Oaklands Way was approached by the same man.

He made a sexual comment and then assaulted her. She shouted for help and he ran away.

THe man was described as white, aged in his late teens to early 20s, 6ft 1in, slim with black hair, thick eyebrows and had a number of moles on his left cheek. He was wearing a blue puffa jacket.

Detective Sergeant John Kalli said: "Obviously this was a distressing and intimidating experience for the two women, but

TWO bespoke mud kitchens are being built at nurseries at Chichester College campuses.

Armed forces charity Building Heroes joined forces with the college last year to provide a foundation property maintenance course at the college’s Brinsbury campus near Pulborough.

THe intensive five-week residential course provides military veterans with a range of skills to enable them to pursue a new career in the construction industry.

Sue Carpenter, senior childcare manager at First Steps Nursery, said: “After submitting our dream designs, the first stage in this exciting project for First Steps was for Mike Sheldrick, the construction team leader at Brinsbury, to visit the nursery for a briefing and to measure up.

"Our children were able to get involved immediately acting as key height measures when deciding on the correct level for the mud kitchen sinks.

"We can’t wait to see the completed mud kitchens and serve our very first mud pies to the fantastic team behind this project.

I would like to thank Mike and his team.”

THe Building Heroes are currently building the basic framework for the kitchens – one for the First Steps nursery at Brinsbury and one for the nursery on the Chichester College campus.

James believes that the houses were originally located on a street, but that this hasn’t survived because of the World War Two reservoir that was built in the park.

THe scans reveal that another Roman street ran further east under Priory Park, but this will not be uncovered.

“We are just going to focus our attention on the area south of THe Guildhall building that is located in the park.

"We’re very lucky, because this is an area that is not used for any specific purpose and so we should be able to carry out a dig to uncover the buildings that we have found.

"THis is sure to unlock even more buried secrets and items of importance,” added James.

Chichester District Council is now in the process of identifying funding opportunities that will enable the council to carry out a more detailed dig.

“We want to be certain what the archaeology is and demonstrate its significance.

"We also want to encourage residents and visitors to come and look at it and find out more about the discoveries that we uncover.

"We hope to use this evidence to bid for money from the Heritage Lottery Fund to fund a series of excavations over successive years.

"We hope to run site tours and provide information during the dig. THis discovery is a unique part of Chichester’s – and this country’s – history, and so it is important that we make this accessible so that people feel involved.

“At this stage, we are not thinking of keeping the remains on permanent display - when the work has been completed, it is more likely that we will return the ground to its current state.

"Instead, the likelihood is that we will create 3D imaging and information that will provide people with all of the information that they need in the long term. THis might form part of a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund."

Priory Park is located in the centre of Chichester. It was given to the people of the city by the Duke of Richmond as a World War 1 memorial.

THe year 2018 will mark the centenary of the park and the first World War. THe council is hoping to arrange some events and digs to tie in with this.

Councillor Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning at the council, said: "THis discovery is very exciting and is of national historical importance.

“Chichester’s rich Roman history already attracts people from far and wide, due to its city walls and Roman Bath House, which is located in our Novium Museum. We hope that these further discoveries will encourage even more people to visit our beautiful city.”

Police appeal for information as three bikes stolen in city THREE bikes have been reported stolen from Chichester.

Between 3.30pm and 4.30pm on Monday, January 16, a grey coloured Whyte 603 Zinc pedal cycle, which was worth £580, was taken from a bike shed near Chichester Cathedral.

Between 1.15pm and 1.25pm, the lock on a cycle in a bike rack in East Street was cut and the bike stolen. THe bike is described as a Cube Aim Pro mountain bike worth around £650.

CCTV captured two men riding off on

bikes in the area just after 1.20pm.

A third bike that was locked to a cycle rack at Chichester College was also stolen between 8.30am and 2.45pm. THe bike is described as a matt black Carrera Vengeance, worth approximately £320.

THe bike had been purchased only the week before.

Museum numbers double thanks to Peake exhibition

Knitting hats all for charity RESIDENTS from a Chichester care home have spent the day doing their bit for charity by taking part in the Innocent Big Knit.

People at Anchor’s Augusta Court in Winterbourne Road, Chichester, tapped into their creative side and knitted a number of miniature hats.

THe hats will be placed on the lids of Innocent Smoothies, and for each one sold Innocent will make a donation of 25p to older people’s charity Age UK. Manager Samantha Kewell said: “THis was the first time we’d got involved with this really amazing project. We had lots of fun knitting the hats in all different patterns and designs, everything from Blue tit to Bobble hat."

Resident Jenny Russell said: “Many other older people might be cold or lonely this winter. I hope knitting these hats can do a little to help."

THe exhibition marks the life of Tim and what lead up to his six-month stint on board the International Space Station last year.

December, 2015, saw 3,083 visitors to the museum. But last December saw it rise to an incredible 6,269 as people grabbed the opportunity to find out more about Chichester's hero astronaut.

Manager Cathy Hakes said: "It has been brilliant. It's been such a great response from our visitors.

"We have had so many people coming in just for the exhibition and for the rest of the museum as well.

"THe visitor numbers have doubled.

THe museum has been packed.

"I'm so pleased because I don't think anyone has said anything negative about it.

"Everyone has been really inspired by Tim's story, which is what we wanted.

"I do feel we have created a really welcoming exhibition which everybody could enjoy."

THe UK Space Agency has provided funding for the exhibition, as part of the 2016 Principia Mission Grant Scheme.

Tim lived in Westbourne and went to Chichester High School.

THe exhibition opened on December 15 - exactly one year after Tim soared into space.

Cathy said it's easy to see why the exhibition has been so popular.

"It's Tim's story. He's just an ordinary person who has done something extraordinary," she said.

"THe fact that he's from Chichester makes it more inspirational to all of us. It shows you that anything is possible. He was just a normal boy and look what he's achieved.

"For local people, it's particularly relevant and interesting.

"He's now part of Chichester's cultural heritage. We are so proud of his achievements.

"I also think we have put on a really good exhibition. It's our biggest so far.

We have really worked hard to make it very accessible and welcoming to everybody."

Visitors start their journey when they step into the museum's rocket lift and are transported into the museum's 'outer space' level.

THeir mission begins by finding out about the Soyuz rocket, from its take off to landing - including watching the moment that Tim blasted off into space.

THey can discover what it's like to live in space, from eating, sleeping, to even exercising in the International Space Station.

Marking Milne's birthday at home

RESIDENTS and staff at a care home have been celebrating National Winnie the Pooh Day. Marriott House and Lodge Care Home in Chichester marked the event on January 18 which celebrated author A.A. Milne's birthday.

Staff dressed up as the characters from Winnie the Pooh and a reminiscence session was arranged which transported residents, visitors and staff through the world of Winnie the Pooh.

It included famous quotes from his books and a look at the various characters.

Milne’s stories have been translated into over 50 languages and are considered classic children’s stories today.

General manager THeresa Shell said: “I grew up reading Winnie the Pooh books, and I know that these stories are also close to the hearts of many people in this home.

We had a lot of fun celebrating this day."

Nurse set to pedal to Paris for charity

A CANCER nurse is preparing to cycle from London to Paris to raise money for charity.

Rusty Taphouse, from Highleigh, near Chichester, has signed up for the tough challenge to raise awareness and vital funds for Myeloma UK. Rusty, who is more used to power walking and running marathons, has raised more than £20,000 over 10 years for various charities.

THey include Breast Cancer Care, St Wilfrid's Hospice (based in Chichester), Macmillan Cancer Support and Prostate Cancer.

THis year marks 15 years since Rusty's mum sadly lost her battle and died from Myeloma.

THe drugs and treatment options which are available now were not available then.

New advances in the treatment of Myeloma are being made all the time.

Myeloma is an increasingly common and very complex cancer of the plasma cells.

Plasma cells are found in the bone marrow.

Filmmaking for school students A NEW filmmaking competition has urged school students from across the country to help highlight the hidden history of African and Caribbean people in Britain.

THe competition, launched this month, is open to all secondary pupils aged between 11 and 19.

THe History Matters Young Filmmaker Awards had been created by Professor Hakim Adi of the University of Chichester in cooperation with the Black Cultural Archives, Historical Association, East Sussex Record Office, Every Voice, and Into Film.

Professor Adi said: “We need to make sure that Britain's history is relevant to everyone.

“It is not necessary to have expensive equipment or previous experience to take part in the Young Filmmaker Awards, just lots of enthusiasm, a camera, and editing software.

“A smartphone or tablet and the filmmaking apps that come with them can produce a great result – I look forward to watching the entries.”

THe competition, which is open to films of a maximum of five minutes in length, is to be judged by a

distinguished panel including Team GB Olympic bronze medal-winning athlete Dina Asher-Smith, who is also a university history student.

Filmmakers can apply as individuals or as groups from schools, colleges, or youth clubs in one of three age categories: 11 to 13, 14 and 15, or 16 to 19.

THe awards have also been supported by History Matters, a group of black historians and teachers led by Professor Adi concerned with the under-representation of history students of African and Caribbean heritage at UK schools and universities.

A website dedicated to the competition – chi.ac.uk/hmyfa – has been launched to inspire entrants with film tips from experts and howto guides about storyboarding and directing.

THe History Matters Young Filmmaker Awards is accepting submissions from now and will remain open until Friday, February 17.

` Cash ready to be given to groups SWIMMERS in Bognor Regis were among the groups who have benefited from West Sussex County Council's small grants fund.

THe £1,000 to the town's swimming club could be followed by similar grants to other small groups.

Up to £100,000 is available from the fund in the current year and more applications are being sought from organisations that aim to promote the wellbeing of residents.

Cllr Christine Field, the county council's cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: "Not only is the small grants fund a fantastic opportunity for people to get an extra boost for their small community projects, it is an excellent way for us as a council to actively support our communities."

THe swimming club's grant was used to fund poolside helpers.

Also among the 21 successful applications was Regis Gymnastics with £758.85.

A LATE Aldwick man's role in developing a vital medical procedure has been praised by a leading expert.

As reported last week, Doug Fielder played a crucial role in turning the potential for using the properties of sound for medical diagnosis into reality.

Mr Fielder's funeral was held on Monday at St Richard's Church, close to his home in Aldwick. He passed away on January 7, at the age of 86.

Susan Halson-Brown, the programme director medical ultrasound of King's College London, said the contribution of Mr Fielder and other pioneers had largely been forgotten as their vision had been incorporated seemlessly into daily medical practice.

"Doug Fielder was to the field of medical ultrasound what Alistair McKee was to the Mary Rose project, a quiet man, there at the beginning and hugely instrumental in the success of the project but content to let others take the recognition.

"He remained interested in medical physics and electronics right up to his death and has left a legacy to the field of medical ultrasound through the many people still within the field whose origins were from the company he helped to found, Sonicaid Ltd. "We take ultrasound examination very much for granted, with 9.3m examinations taking place each year, growing at a rate of about eight per cent a year.

"Alongside conventional projectional

radiography (X-ray), ultrasound is one of the most available diagnostic tests to GPs and has become an integral part of obstretic care through the fetal anomaly screening programme.

"We should remember those early pioneers, like Doug Fielder, as we owe them a debt of gratitude which will never be repaid," said Mrs Halson-Brown.

She said one of the most important developments in obstetric ultrasound technology, the ultrasound fetal heart detector, was developed in a garage/ workshop in Bognor Regis, using an OXO cube tin as its prototype housing.

Commercially developed by Sonicaid, a Bognor Regis company which moved to Chichester and Livingstone in Scotland, the Sonicaid D102 became the first in a series of fetal surveillance machines initially developed by Doug Fielder, Frank Baker and Ronnie Cowan which revolutionised obstetric care and won a Design Council award for medical electronics in 1976.

Sonicaid's continued research led to a second in 1980 for the Sonicaid System 8000 which took the technology further.

Mr Fielder's move to St Richard's Hospital enabled him to continue his research, initially with a forerunner of today's 3D ultrasound technology.

He was also involved in the screening pilot at Chichester for the life-threatening condition of abdominal aorta aneurysm which was adopted nationally in 2011.

Junior parkrun is launched

THe town's popular parkrun for adults has been extended to those aged 4-14 and the popularity of Sunday's inaugural event delighted organisers.

A total of 113 children tackled the 2km course at the Arena Sports Centre in Westloats Lane in spite of the just above freezing temperature.

Karen Vilday, the event director, said: "With such a parkrun community already established at the 5km Saturday parkrun in Hotham Park each week, the new junior parkrun has already generated great interest and support.

"THe children will now have their own parkrun where they can run with or without their parents, but - more importantly - build their own parkrun community with friends and siblings while keeping active and having fun."

Karen heads a core group of trained volunteers who will stage the run at 9am each Sunday.

THeir aim is to get more young children taking part in regular sport and physical activity. THe aim is to have fun, regardless of an individual's pace.

THe success of the first run can be seen by the fact more than 250 people were present taking part or supporting.

Bognor Regis parkrun event director Ben Bowers said: "THe fact children as young as four have the opportunity to take part in their own junior version of the phenomenal parkrun experience is

fantastic. A big thank-you must go to the funders, volunteers and parkrun UK who have all put in the hard work to enable this event to come to Bognor Regis each week.

"I hope that the event encourages even more children to take part in running and enjoy the experience."

Parkrun ambassador Mike Houston has helped with the launch and the training of volunteers.

He said: "I'm confident that the event will grow from strength to strength in the coming weeks and months and help encourage children in the area to get active on a regular basis at a great free and fun event."

` Crime survey of residents launched A SURVEY has launched to seek the views of residents around Bognor Regis about crime in their area.

THe aim of the questionnaire is to seek their views on their experience and perceptions of crime together with what is important to them in their local area.

It is being run by the Safer Arun Partnership, composed of councils and the police and probation services.

County council cabinet member for community wellbeing, Cllr Christine Field, said: "However safe a place is, the perception of crime can have a big impact on a community so it's really important for us to understand residents' views, not only on their experience of crime but also their perception of crime."

Newcomers wanted for club to survive NEW members are being urgently sought to keep Bognor Regis Swimming Club afloat.

THe club's number of swimmers have almost halved, from 100 to just over 50, in just four years.

It is 52 years this weekend since the opening meeting at the former pool in Butlin's established the club.

Membership topped 300 very quickly and the club was bursting at the seams.

Current chairman Sarah Boote-Cook would love to have the same problem but she has vowed the club will get stronger from its current size.

"We are not going anywhere. Talk has been made of a merger with the clubs in Littlehampton and Chichester. But we are all different and we are the smallest club.

We would soon be swallowed up.

"I was told that so much had disappeared from Bognor Regis and we are determined the club will not be the next thing to go," she said.

THe club's membership might be probably the smallest in its proud history but the age profile gives Sarah real hope for the future. Nearly all the swimmers are aged 9-11 and the benefits they will gain from the club's coaches should see them help it to regain its previous strength.

"I do feel positive about the club and can see a way forward," she said. "Give these swimmers two years and they will become very good. We are also about to start to work towards the ASA's Swim 21 recognition.

f Hard at work practising their strokes Two major events this May - including the Vanessa Knight open meeting - will also raise the club's profile and muchneeded funds. Last year's open meeting attracted more 300 swimmers from around England and as far south as the Channel Islands.

Sarah said: "We had to have crowd control at the Arun Leisure Centre because it was packed. We will also be holding a Scouts gala this year. THe one a few years ago prompted a surge in numbers."

Sarah said swimming was essential for anyone living in Bognor Regis apart from its attractions as a sport.

"We live on the coast of an island nation and yet the ASA's latest national statistics show 80 per cent of pupils leaving primary school can't swim.

"I don't know why parents don't see it as an essential skill.

"Yes, it is a commitment to swim two hours a night for up to five nights a week when there is also homework to do. But it is also a commitment to play football and that's always popular."

THe club meets at the 25m four-lane Arena Sports Centre pool off Westloats Lane and Sarah said the centre's managers were sympathetic to its situation.

"THe Arena are absolutely brilliant to us and we would not be here if they didn't support us as much as they do," she said.

But it still costs £21,000 a year to run the pool. THat needs a lot of fundraising.

Events are constantly being devised to keep the money coming in - along with a new generation of swimmers.

Amber gives hope for the club's future AMBER Macrae is one of Bognor Regis Swimming Club's two county standard swimmers.

THe 13-year-old reached the level of the best in West Sussex with a time of 3min 5sec in the 200m butterfly.

She is just one second away from joining the elite in the south east.

"I feel in my own space when I am in the water," said Amber, pictured top right. "I struggle a bit academically but swimming is something I can be really proud of.

"Some of my friends are good at reading and writing. But I am good at swimming.

It's great to get to the county standard because it shows people how good I am and that I have something to show for my swimming."

She has been a member of the club for two years and intends to keep up the sport to help her career ambition of becoming a marine biologist.

One of the club's younger swimmers is Connor Merrick. He achieved his first personal best in the 50m front crawl in the club's gala meeting earlier this year.

Connor, nine, said: "You get a lot of exercise from swimming and it's just fun.

It feels like I am flying when I'm in the pool and makes me feel free. I also want to be an Olympian and I train three times a week."

Josh Zarn, 50, who has been turning up for training since 1974. THe NHS mental health worker still goes along four nights a week to keep fit and enjoy the camaraderie.

"THe main thing I like about swimming is that pretty much anyone can do it," he said. "It does not impact on the joints like a lot of the gravity-based sports.

"If you swim with other people, it's also fun as opposed to ploughing up and down the lanes on your own."

He can boast a couple of bronze county medals from his competitive days.

Head coach Sue Eason has the role of developing the present young swimmers to that level.

"THe kids give me job satisfaction. We teach them how to be competitive and how to obey the rules.

"You notice the talent they have got and build on it. We've got two swimmers at county times and a few more just a fraction away with just a fingertip separating them from getting there yet.

"It's all about somebody who will listen, wants to be here and has got good motivation. Some of them want to be Olympians and want to beat the best."

Former members Gemma Spofforth and Duncan Goodhew did just that in previous Games to show it is possible with the right attitude and ability.

A NEW 30mph speed limit has been proposed for a stretch of the A29 in Eastergate.

West Sussex County Council wants to make motorists travel at the lower speed for longer along Fontwell Avenue.

It intends to create a traffic regulation order to enable the current 30mph limit to be extended northwards to a point 45m north of Eastergate Lane to achieve this.

A statement by Tony Kershaw, the council's director of law and assurance, says: "Fontwell Avenue presently has a 30mph speed limit between its junctions with Nyton Road and a point immediately north of its junction with Collins Close.

"A 40mph speed limit then applies northwards from this point.

"Residents on the 40mph length of road have raised concerns about safety when accessing their driveways.

"Residents of Collins Close have also raised concerns that the location of the change between the 40mph and 30mph speed limits is too close to the junction of Collins Close.

"As a result, they state that traffic often passes the junction of Collins Close in excess of the 30mph speed limit, which in combination with limited visibility, makes emerging from the junction hazardous."

A consultation about the proposal is being held until February 9.

A will of iron is needed to resist the delightful menu at The Foundry

by Fiona Callingham WALKING into the cosy surroundings of THe Foundry in Chichester I was taken aback.

Having not been on the premises since it was THe Globe Inn a couple of years ago I was startled by not just the physical difference of the place but the welcoming atmosphere it now afforded.

Both pub and restaurant areas blended perfectly for a venue that felt homely yet stylish. THe patterned wallpaper and carpets reminded me of décor found in relatives’ homes and the wooden aesthetic of the bar and beer garden wouldn’t have looked out of place in a swanky London bar. THis design also felt very much like a fusion of old and new, posters in the bathroom of Marilyn Monroe and a gramophone by the till coupled with the kitschy wallpaper felt fashionable rather than

out of touch.

My friend and I were greeted immediately by the friendly bar staff who showed us to a table in the restaurant area. It took us longer than usual to decide what to order as the menu proved varied and tempting to say the least.

For me, the choice of starter was obvious.

And the grilled halloumi on a red pepper salad certainly did not disappoint. Halloumi can be devilishly tricky to get right. If undercooked in can be soggy and unappetising, and overcooked results in a charred lump that resembles coal. Not so here. It was perfectly cooked and the sweet red peppers in the salad only complemented the saltiness of the cheese.

It was also an ideal portion size that meant I was still able to enjoy my main, and priced at £5.50 which I felt was very reasonable.

My friend opted for the whitebait. It was served with homemade tartare sauce and

garnished with fresh rocket and a slice of lemon. He described the breadcrumb coating of the fish as crispy and tasty, and the fish itself as being full of flavour. THis was a similar price to my halloumi, and at £5.25 we thought that the whitebait was worth every penny.

THe service was extremely quick and we didn’t have to wait long for our mains. My friend had ordered the steak and ale pie, which was served with mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy. He was delighted that the pie was completely encased in pastry, which isn’t always the case with this dish. THe meat was tender and tasty, and both the pie and accompanying vegetables were more than enough food. He managed to eat it all, though, because he said it was too good not to. We were both surprised that this meal was priced at only £9.95 which was extremely good value considering its size and quality.

I felt the same about my main, the garden burger. As a vegetarian I constantly struggle to find food in restaurants that is actually worth the money. But this burger was delicious. It was served with a generous portion of golden chips, onion rings and a salad garnish. THe burger itself was made of beans and pulses and was crispy on the outside with a soft cheesy centre. It was actually a substantial replacement for meat, which is often difficult to find. At £8 my food almost felt like a steal, especially as I came to the conclusion that it was the best vegetarian burger I had found in Chichester.

A roaring time at The Lion in Pagham THIS 15th century smugglers’ haunt has character in abundance to distinguish it from other pubs in the area.

Even though it has sloping ceilings and traditional fireplaces, THe Lion has certainly adapted to modern demands with its exemplary menus and unfaltering lively atmosphere courtesy of their weekend DJ, appearances by live bands and, of course, their friendly staff. Despite this, the historic appeal of the place is never compromised as old and new blend together for a homely yet lively pub.

Dining at THe Lion is always a delectable experience with a section of the building devoted entirely to its popular restaurant area. THeir extensive menu offers a range of meals that everyone can enjoy, including a comprehensive selection for both vegetarians and celiacs (all you have to do is ask for their specific vegetarian menu, and to hear what the gluten free options are from their attentive waiting team.)

To start why not try a bowl of their freshly made soup of the day, or perhaps homemade duck liver pate complemented by caramelised onion chutney?

THe accomplished chefs at THe Lion pride themselves on their homemade dishes and creating meals as delicious as possible. A great example of this is their hugely popular steak and kidney pie priced at only £11 for which the puff pastry crust is made within the kitchen of THe Lion.

THey have a generous list of meat dishes to choose from such as pan fried calves liver with bacon, slow roasted duck leg, 8oz fillet steak and many more. All their main dishes are served with a choice of golden chips, creamy mash or fresh new potatoes as well as salad or vegetables (unless otherwise stated) to ensure you won’t leave feeling hungry!

However, it is their exquisite fish dishes that really bring something special to their menus. As well as the beloved cod and chips there is also the option of whole grilled Atlantic plaice and grilled skate wing among others.

For further variety the specials boards, updated regularly, add a range of both well-loved and more adventurous options. Whenever it is freshly available you can expect to find lobster and crab dishes on these boards - a popular choice for lovers of seafood.

THeir chefs are crafting a unique menu in honour of the date that promises to be delicious yet light, without a trace of anything pungent like garlic! THis three-course meal is priced at £25 and sure to impress your date for the night.

A gateway to authentic and delicious Indian food We discovered what delights India Gate in Merston has to offer

by Daniel Field SITUATED along the busy A259 between Bognor Regis and Chichester, the India Gate restaurant at Merston is a welcoming sight for hungry and weary travellers alike.

Manager Michael Noor has run India Gate for eight years and has watched the business thrive as customers return again and again for their delicious food and excellent service.

My friend and I paid India Gate a visit to sample a variety of their dishes and we were cenrtainly not disappointed.

To begin, we opted for a selection of starters - the choice of food on offer at India Gate is exceptionally eclectic, and choosing what to have was the hardest part of all!

Starters average around £3.95 and include such diverse dishes as ostrich tikka, cooked in the tandoor, squid with lemon and tarragon, and a vegetarian option, dilalbo chop, a spicy potato cake, amongst the more familiar favourites. Main courses include a wide range of vegetarian, seafood, biryani and balti dishes.

We were first treated to an appetiser, beautifully charred tandoori king prawns in the shell, with a mild smoky spiciness to tease the palate, but not enough to overwhelm the delicate flavour of the pink prawns within.

Our next course arrived - a selection of starters, all of them equally delicious.

Most outstanding was the excellent crab maliabar, a homemade, deep fried patty of minced onion, potato and crab, with a crisp firm breaded outer coating, complemented by a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Along with the crab cake was a lamb samosa, a flaky Indian pastry, filled with pungent and spicy lamb, a sheek kebab, hot, meaty and aromatic, and possibly the best onion bhaji I have ever had, fresh fried juicy onion strips encased in a light crisp batter that melted in the mouth- with not a hint of grease.

To accompany our meal, we ordered a bottle of India Gate’s house wine. THe wine list is very comprehensive, with an international mix of familiar and less wellknown names, ranging in price from £27.00 to £79.00.

THe house wine is a more modest £14.50 a bottle and we plumped for the red. It was a highly drinkable soft, generous fruity wine with a delicious balanced structure and vanilla undertones, with India Gate’s own label adorning the bottle.

We were treated to a veritable feast as our next course arrived. THe next dish was the home made kathi kebab, a wrap made with soft Indian pastry encasing a tender lamb and herb filling with a mild spice and coriander flavour.

Also accompanying the curry dishes were sag sana gobi- a savoury vegetarian side dish comprising of whole nutty chick peas, spicy cauliflower and spinach, which had a pleasing palate-cleansing effect on the taste buds, and a sag rice to accompany this rich with spinach and a perfect companion to the rich and creamy curries.

And indeed, the stars of Indian Gate unsurprisingly were the curries themselves.

We chose to share the splendid lamb khalia, a stunning dish comprising succulent forkfuls of meaty, tender chunks of marinated lamb, highly spiced in an aromatic sauce with onion, ginger, pepper and garlic, with just enough heat to make the taste buds dance on the tongue.

We also opted for the equally superb, mouth-watering chicken lababdar. THis is a heavenly south Indian home style curry, resplendently sweet with the unique exotic flavour of coconut running through it. THese flavours were balanced out with piquant ginger and sweet chili, embellished with a smattering of almonds, to give this delectable traditional dish additional texture - a perfect marriage with the delicate morsels of chicken.

THe excellent cheese-stuffed paratha and scrumptiously puffy nan bread were just the thing to mop up the last drops of the curry sauces.

For dessert, we indulged in the house special blueberry classic, a refreshingly cold feast of whipped cream, flavoured with fruits and blueberry sauce, which

was a perfect conclusion to our wonderful gastronomic experience.

Michael Noor has certainly stretched the boundaries of Indian cuisine since coming to Chichester some ten years ago - his formula is highly successful- he now runs a chain of restaurants in the south east and has plans to expand further.

His sophisticated and unique menu, consisting as it does of the best of northern and southern India, Persian, Punjabi, and Bengali-influenced food, is pure pleasure, appealing to couples, and groups of friends alike.

With excellent food and service India Gate is a great choice for your Valentine's Day meal. Especially for February 14, the chefs have created a wonderful a la carte menu, and Michael is offering it at an exceptional price.

For a five-course meal including starters and desserts, as well as a glass of champagne, it is only £22.95.

Or for those who'd rather spend the evening together at home there is, of course, the option of a takeaway from India Gate that will surely take you away to the true tastes and spices of India!

My prawn cocktail arrived beautifully presented as a generous roundel of succulent prawns in a luscious baby pink Marie Rose sauce, nestled on a bed of fresh salad leaves and tomatoes, accompanied by brown bread and a pot of creamy butter. It was a classic dish done well.

My companion was equally delighted with his pile of crispy chilli beef – delicate tender strips of beef in a crunchy, light batter coating with a hint of chilli sauce, served with a salad garnish.

Enjoyable though our starters were, we were glad to have left room for the gastronomic delight that was the main course.

My vegetarian dish was so delicious that even I could have been converted to becoming a non meat-eater. e dish is described as ‘roasted red pepper, courgette and warm new potato salad, served with halloumi chips.’ e roasted pepper, chargrilled and sweet was served on a bed of rocket, fresh tomato, red onion, and honey and mustard dressing, which complemented it perfectly.

I had never had halloumi chips before, and the strips of cheese coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried, absolutely did not disappoint.

My fellow diners’ Barbeque Glazed Pork Ribs arrived as promised, a huge plate of glossy brown ribs doused in a deep rich sweet smoky barbecue sauce and served on a bed of fresh salad leaves with a piquant dressing, and a side of homemade fat chunky chips, and what he described as the ‘best coleslaw’ he had tasted in a very long time.

He made a brave attempt at eating all the ribs about the portion sizes at the Nag's Head!

We skipped the homemade dessert on this occasion, but that will be an excuse to return in the very near future – as if we needed one.

We dined al fresco, but whilst there we had a look around the interior of the restaurant. It has recently undergone some refurbishment and the result is a very light and welcoming venue, simple but stylishly rustic. e owners Dave and Teresa West have been for bed and breakfast as well as the restaurant and bar, with Full English Breakfast. Although the Nags Head is very well known for its carvery, with its wide choice of meats, vegetables and potatoes, I would urge all readers to consider trying out the a la carte menus too.

You don’t need to travel to Asia for an authentic taste of Thailand Distinctive dishes at Thai House in Chichester

by Fiona Callingham AFTER nine months travelling the world last year, adjusting back to reality was a real challenge. My last stop was THailand and something I found extremely difficult when I arrived home was getting used to our food again. I missed the THai food a lot more than I thought I would.

Buying food from street vendors in THailand can be as cheap as 80 pence a meal and eating in their restaurants didn’t cost much more. So everyday for a month I was eating fresh THai meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner - or whenever I wanted because they don’t have any set rules about mealtimes.

To begin with I was trying as many different dishes as possible. From Som Tum, the spicy papaya salad, to Tom Yam, an extremely popular hot and sour broth to endless fried rice and noodle dishes. However, by the

end of my travels I had a selection of a few favourite dishes that I sought out wherever I went. Since I’ve been home I have tried to recreate these dishes myself, never quite doing them the justice they deserve.

Upon visiting THai House on St Pancras in Chichester I was delighted to find my cherished dishes on their menu, along with an enormous range of authentic and delicious THai delicacies.

On my fervent recommendation my friend and I ordered a pineapple fried rice with vegetables to share between us. Rice, or khao, is a staple of the THai diet and fried rice was originally invented as a way of using up leftover rice from the day before. I first discovered this dish when island-hopping in the south of THailand. I can vividly remember ordering a portion of pineapple fried rice after a day biking around beautiful Ko Lanta.

ingredient for a rice dish, but something about the way they cook it perfectly complements the savoury flavours. I would either order it with vegetables or bean curd (tofu) and it always came with scrambled up egg and juicy chunks of pineapple.

At THai House the pineapple fried rice was exactly this except I found they included more vegetables with it which gave the rice even more flavour as well as an added crunch. It tasted so similar to what I had experienced before that for a moment I could have been back on Ko Lanta. It was also excellent value at £5.95, and there was more than enough for both of us.

To accompany the rice my friend and I each ordered a curry. I couldn’t get enough of the curries when I was in THailand. Delicious on their own as a kind of spicy soup or with rice as a full meal I probably had one every day.

My friend opted for a green chicken curry.

Green curry is very popular in this country and for good reason. From the central area of THailand, green curry is renowned for its spicy yet slightly sweet taste created by the combination of chilies, garlic, lemongrass, ginger and coconut milk.

THe green curry from THai House certainly didn’t disappoint, each spoonful setting the

tastebuds tingling. My friend was pleased with her choice of chicken as it proved to be tender and full of flavour and worth the money at £8.50.

I opted for a yellow curry with beancurd.

Although yellow curry is fairly mild, this one had plenty of flavour with a rich, creamy taste created by the coconut cream used in the ingredients. Yellow curry always contains potatoes and onion along with your choice of meat or vegetarian options which, at THai House, are chicken, prawns, mixed seafood, beancurd or vegetables. Like everything else, on the menu I thought it was extremely well priced at £6.95.

Although these were the only dishes we sampled - due to the generous portion sizes - there were plenty of others we wanted to try, from their selection of starters to the salads, soups, noodles and meat dishes.

Something I also missed from THailand was the friendly attitude of the people. THis was plentiful at THai House where the lovely ladies dressed in traditional THai clothes were quick to greet us with a cheerful “Sawadee!”

Big flavours from the Big Smoke Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

A LA Dick Whittington I headed off to London last weekend, not in pursuit of gold, but rather to attend a rock concert at the legendary 100 club, return to my favourite Hilton hotel in Paddington and sample the delights of Harvey Nichols in terms of Saturday lunch and the purchase of one or two fine wines from the Loire.

Friday night I ventured out to the renowned 100 Club to attend, as part of their Blues week, the Deborah Bonham concert, Debbie and spouse Pete being local residents, formerly of Bersted and regular drinking partners of mine at the Royal Oak and now residing Chidham way.

THey are about to embark upon a tour in France and during the concert Debbie (pictured above with yours truly) duly delivered in imperious fashion a thunderous version of No Angel, a song which celebrates her incredible vocal range and gorgeous, golden voice.

Debbie, like a fine wine, improves with age (nevertheless she still looks fresh and exudes energy) and combined with husband Pete Bullick's guitar-playing acumen are a band to look out for at any

local venue!

Saturday lunch-time and Harvey Nichols as a venue enticed me and I subsequently looked at the wine shop concentrating on the Loire region and purchased a Harvey Nichols 2015 Sancerre for £18 from the flinted hillsides of Saint-Satur with a combination of old vines (some over 60 years old), low yields and six months of lees ageing and exhibiting a hint of smoky minerality complemented by refreshing

acidity culminating in a long finish! A classic Sancerre to savour!

Variety is reputedly the spice of life, as the dictum says, so I have decided this week to concentrate exclusively on the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety. THis particular grape is a green-skinned grape variety that originates from the Bordeaux region of France and undoubtedly derives its name from the French Sauvage and Blanc. It is an early-ripening aromatic grape and in

cooler climates, such as in the Loire region of France, produces refreshing acidity in the form of pure, zesty wines. THere are over 275,000 plus acres of Sauvignon Blanc planted worldwide and in France Pouilly - Fumé, Sancerre, Graves, Entre - Deux Mers and Touraine are prime examples thereof.

Returning to Blighty, I ambled into Sainsbury's and located two discounted examples of New World Sauvignon

SMOKED SALMON HASH BROWN WITH POACHED EGG AND

HOLLANDAISE INGREDIENTS FOR THE HOLLANDAISE SAUCE • 50ml/2fl oz white wine vinegar • 6 peppercorns • 1 bay leaf • 1 sprig tarragon • 2 egg yolks • 110g/4oz clarified butter, warmed • 1 lemon, juice only • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard • pinch cayenne pepper FOR THE SMOKED SALMON HASH BROWN • 1kg/2lb 4oz cooked potato, slightly mashed • 400g/14oz cooked salmon fillet • 150g/5½oz smoked salmon, torn into pieces • 150g/5½oz crème fraiche • 2 tbsp chopped dill • 75g/2½oz unsalted butter FOR THE POACHED EGGS • salt, to taste • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar • 4 free-range eggs

METHOD For the hollandaise sauce, in a pan, heat the vinegar, peppercorns, bay leaf, tarragon and 50ml/2fl oz water and cook until the liquid has reduced in volume to a tablespoon. Strain through a sieve.

Put the liquid and the egg yolks in a food processor and blend. With the motor running, gradually add the clarified butter until you have a smooth sauce. Finish with the lemon juice, mustard and cayenne pepper. Set aside and keep warm (cover the mixture to prevent a skin from forming on the surface).

For the smoked salmon hash brown, place the potato, salmon, smoked salmon, crème fraîche and dill in a large bowl and mix. Heat a large frying pan until hot and add the butter.

To make each hash brown,

place a metal ring in the centre of the pan and pack it with the mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden-brown and crisp.

For the poached eggs, bring a pan of salted water to the boil and add the vinegar.

Reduce the heat to a simmer and whisk the water to create a whirlpool. Once settled, crack an egg in. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, remove the poached egg carefully with a slotted spoon and place on a plate to drain. Repeat the process with the remaining eggs.

To serve, place the salmon hash in the centre of serving plates and top with the egg and hollandaise sauce. Just before serving, break the egg yolks.

Hemp seeds have been around forever.

THey are technically a nut and are extremely nutritious. THey are a great protein source, as more than 25 per cent of their total calories are from high-quality protein and these gorgeous little seeds contain over 30 per cent fat (good fat) and are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alphalinolenic acid (omega-3).Hemp seeds are an amazing source of vitamin E and many healthenhancing minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc. THey can be consumed raw, cooked or roasted. Hemp seed oil is also very healthy, and has been used as a food/ medicine in China for over 3,000 years!

In my clinics, if I give hemp seed oil to people with eczema it seems to make massive improvements with their skin condition. It does this by improving blood levels of essential fatty acids.

Sometimes you can almost see the skin healing in a matter of days. It also improves (dare I say, can completely clear up at times)

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum HALSTED the ironmongers were established at premises on the south side of East Street (originally No 80 and later moving to No 81/82) by 1840.

By the 1880s, the Chichester directories officially recorded the company's foundry located to the rear of the shop.

Halsted was particularly well-known for their farm machinery, in particular their lightweight horse ploughs and a wide range of metalwork from ornamental gates and railings to kitchen ranges such as ‘THe Chichester’ model.

THe business was started by Charles Halsted Senior, a plumber born about 1793.

He had three sons, Charles Townsend Halsted (b 1823) Henry Halsted (b 1825) and John Halsted (b 1826). In 1846, Charles

Halsted Senior passed away and the company passed to his sons who had formed a partnership as ironmongers.

Between the 1860s and 1870s, the partnership between the brothers dwindled.

Charles, the eldest son, became a banker in partnership with Messrs Dendy and Gruggen as well as being Alderman and magistrate.

John, with his wife, Fanny, and their family, became farmers tending to between 500 and 700 acres of land at West Itchenor employing between 12 and 19, men as well as four to seven boys.

THey also looked after their widowed mother, Ann. Middle son Henry was left running the ironmongery and foundry business.

By the 1870s, Halsted & Sons had become well established as an ironmonger, but had

also developed their manufacturing business.

THe business grew immensely and the time came for the company to increase their manufacturing further.

An additional site was purchased at 1 North Pallant, a large Georgian house, attractive due to its substantial garden to the rear where a large engineering works was established.

Many of the company’s farming implements were displayed courtesy of the Corn Exchange company on the access road which ran along the east side of the Corn Exchange.

THis was a sneaky marketing opportunity for Halsteds as the machinery might catch the eye of passing farmers who had sold their corn at market. THe running of the business was not without complications. THe East Street shop was destroyed by fire in the 1870s and had to be rebuilt.

A graphic account detailing the events suggests that the building had been lit with paraffin lamps and assistants would use candles to light their way down to the cellar,

which held stocks of merchandise such as gunpowder, bullets, paraffin, petrol and agricultural machinery.

THe account suggests that one evening an older man of 50 was left in charge when a customer came in for some paraffin necessitating a trip down to the cellar.

THe assistant accidentally dropped his candle, setting off a chain reaction as the petrol caught fire and ignited the gunpowder and bullets. THe fire brigade were unable to cope with the exploding ordnance and called out the Army who brought along bullet-proof screens to the scene.

Bullet holes are still visible in the brickwork of the buildings opposite.

THe ironmongery shop remained in East Street until the 1930s when the business eventually closed.

Above the present building, Pret A Manger, a stone with key emblem that was Halsted’s trademark, can still be seen.

Treasurer – Contact 88

4Sight Centre Support Volunteers – 4Sight

Contact 88 is a transport service for elderly and disabled people living in Chichester and the surrounding area. They provide a varied programme of outings (pub lunches, visits to places of interest and shopping trips) throughout the year. The “door-to-door” service and social contact are very important to elderly and disabled people; many of the passengers would otherwise be housebound and some have been going out with Contact 88 regularly for many years. They are looking for a Volunteer Treasurer to help with the day-to-day management of the charity’s financial affairs.

Subject to election, the Treasurer will be a member of the Committee of Trustees and will be required to report the financial situation to fellow trustees at the bi-monthly meetings and to prepare the annual accounts for submission to the Independent Examiners.

Computer Buddy – West Sussex Library Service

Volunteer Mentor Men’s Project – Sussex Pathways Sussex Pathways operates a mentoring support service to offenders being released back into the community, primarily from HMP Lewes & HMP Ford Open but also extending to HMP Bronzefield & HMP Highdown. Mentors engage with people who are soon to be released from prison, and the mentoring begins pre-release with weekly meetings, for about two months.

The mentor and mentee develop a resettlement plan for the mentee and then the mentoring continues for a further six months in the community.

The mentor role includes guiding the offenders to the relevant specialist services that they require to assist them in rebuilding their lives, acting as advocate when necessary, establishing clear lines of communication and referring to external agencies.

4Sight is a charity supporting local blind and partially sighted people; they offer a range of services to help people with sight loss gain independence and improve their well-being. They are looking for volunteers to help at their 4Sight Bradbury Centre in Bognor Regis. They need reliable people to man the phones, assist with visiting clients and supporting the team with administrative tasks, including data entry and other computer work as well as providing valuable information and sign-posting people with sight loss to available services. They have a resource room with equipment designed to be of assistance to people with sight loss and part of this role will be to learn what these items do and demonstrate them accordingly..

Computer Buddies needed! Could you help someone learn how to use a computer and learn new skills? Bognor Regis Library is looking for computer buddies to teach people basic computing skills and how to use the internet on a one-to-one basis. Duties will include: Running training sessions for complete novices to help them get started with computers, including keyboard and mouse skills; and running training sessions to customers who have some experience in ICT, particularly in the areas of email and internet. Depending on demand, the general commitment is two one-hour sessions per week. More frequent and less frequent attendance will be considered in appropriate situations. If you are able to teach/ demonstrate ICT, have good communication and interpersonal skills, and are happy to engage with people of all ages and differing levels of skills, this could be the role for you!

THE KIA pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT Kia’s GT twins, the three-door pro_cee’d GT and five-door cee’d GT, combine sparkling performance with premium-class sporty looks, adding further impetus to the designled revolution which Kia has been pursuing.

Both are powered by a turbocharged version of the Gamma 1.6-litre directinjection petrol engine, which satisfies EU6 emissions standards. Driving through a sixspeed manual gearbox with an ideal spread of ratios, it delivers scintillating off-the-line performance, with 0-60mph achievable in 7.3 seconds on the way to a top speed of 143mph. At the same time, the pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT are efficient everyday cars, with the emphasis on usability and civility in all conditions rather than raw track-day performance.

Sports-tuned suspension and steering and powerful all-disc brakes ensure they are more than capable of handling the impressive power and torque outputs of 201bhp and 265Nm. Both feature stylish 18-inch alloy wheels shod with 225/40ZR18 Michelin Sport tyres.

THe GT models have an electronic sound generator which delivers a distinctive and exciting engine note into the cabin. When activated via a ‘GT’ button on the steering wheel, the traditional analogue speedometer changes to a digital numerical display and shows torque and turbo gauges. THe steering

wheel itself has a D-shaped rim and is trimmed in leather with perforated grips and red stitching. An aluminium engine start/ stop button is part of the Smart Entry System, complementing the chrome-tipped window switches and air-vent surrounds which lend the interior a classy appearance.

Equipment includes an MP3-compatible DAB radio as part of the six-speaker audio system and there are illuminated USB and AUX ports. THe GT models also have a 7-inch satellite navigation screen with Kia Connected Services featuring TomTom® Connected services. THis system includes European mapping and a Traffic Messaging Channel, and permits UK postcode entries. It allows drivers to choose the fastest, shortest or most fuel-efficient route to their destination and supports 15 languages. TomTom® functionality is another first for Kia, and supplies additional driving information such as traffic updates, speed camera locations and weather reports. THe 7-inch screen is also linked to a colour reversing camera.

THe 1.6-litre Gamma engine was the first turbocharged petrol unit to be offered by Kia in the UK. THe T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) engine develops 201bhp at 6,000rpm, but what really gives the GT its Instantaneous response and rapid acceleration is the 265Nm of torque available without interruption, now from only 1,500rpm to 4,500rpm.

Both GTs are dressed to thrill. THe unique front-end treatment, which is common to both models, features a low, broad bumper and air dam and a wide central lower air intake to supply additional cooling to the high-performance turbocharged engine.

THis is underscored by a red trim line which emphasises the wide and sporty track. THe lower air intake is flanked on either side by high-gloss black inserts housing ‘ice-cube’ LED daytime running lamps and foglights.

THe high-gloss black theme is continued on the graphite chrome-framed main radiator grille – with Kia’s family ‘tiger-nose’ outline.

From the rear, the sporty stance of both cars is evident in their bold shoulders and, on the pro_cee’d, steeply angled tailgate glass. THis is emphasised by a diffuser section in the lower edge of the rear bumper, separating the twin sports exhaust outlets.

It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

TRUMP was inaugurated and within days hit the press (no surprise) for many reasons but one that stands out as questionable politics is about the abortion rules in America.

“No US funds can be or have been used to perform or promote abortion services overseas” THe fact is that President Trump’s shameful decision to reinstate the global gag rule will cause more unintended pregnancies, more maternal complications and injuries, less information about HIV/Aids prevention and treatment and more – not fewer – abortions.”

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, said: “Now, foreign non-governmental organisations will be forced to give women incomplete medical information, advice and care in order to participate in US-supported programmes abroad. When last in place, the global gag rule had the effect of decreasing access to family planning services around the world.

Study after study shows that when women have increased access to family planning services and supplies, such as contraceptives, the incidence of abortion decreases.

Republican congressman Michael Burgess, who chairs the House’s health subcommittee, welcomed the move. “Life is a precious and sacred gift, and we must do all we can to protect it,” he said. “I applaud President Trump for taking this important action and look forward to continuing to work together in advancing pro-life policies and protecting taxpayer dollars.”

THankfully, (or not depending on your views) abortions in the UK can be carried out in an NHS hospital or a licensed clinic, and are usually available free of charge on the NHS. Easiest route for advice is your GP and ask for a referral to an abortion service – your GP should refer you to another doctor if he or she has any objections to abortion.

Now again, the debate around abortion is in danger of becoming polarised by those only concerned with the unborn child on the one hand and those solely concerned with the rights of the women on the other. THe reality is that both lives matter. Furthermore , it is not just a women thing - men are involved.

However, it was clear that the millions of women who marched across the globe on Saturdday, January 21, were defending the rights of women of all backgrounds, beliefs, ethnicities and experiences in order that all may have a voice. Many posters and voices rejected the rhetoric of division and hate and the rise of xenophobia in this country and around the world. THe US had an unbelievable turnout but as they peacefully promoted their wishes the fears of new laws in the US had already begun.

Do not think it’s a US thing. In some ways, it feels extraordinary that the UK House of Lords (mainly men) will sit and consider whether they should force women to give birth to a baby with serious health problems, and in some cases, limited chance of survival outside of the womb.

On my soapbox now, folks, we must demand equal representation in politics so that our government may go forward to make decisions about all our futures with an understanding of the different experiences and needs of women – you only have to look at the photo of Trump signing the new abortion rules surrounded by men to see the danger ahead.

GARY is looking for a new home - and he hopes to find one tomorrow at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre's first viewing day of the year.

Two-year-old Gary has been living at the centre - at Chalder Lane in Sidlesham since April 18, 2016, after he was found as a stray.

He has told one of the centre's helpers: "I am a very special, friendly boy who desperately wants love and affection.

"Sometimes, I get a little carried away and can be naughty as I haven't ever had

a real home.

"I need a new owner who will let me settle in and help me to learn how to be loved.

"I would not be suitable to live with children and would prefer a quiet, relaxed home.

"I just hope there is someone out there that will take a chance on me."

Gary is among more than 100 cats and kittens which the centre is looking after and which are looking for their forever home.

CHALLENGING climbs and stunning scenery are guaranteed on a new charity off-road cycling event for the children's hospice in the area.

Chestnut Tree House has organised the Hit the Downs MTB on May 7 to offer the cyclists the chance to jump on their saddles and take on the South Downs Way on a 20 or 40-mile route.

A popular destination for mountain biking, the South Downs Way is a 100 mile off-road National Trust trail which runs the entire length of the South Downs National Trust.

Starting near Worthing, close to Chestnut Tree House, the Hit the Downs MTB will test riders with challenging climbs and rapid downhill descents. Its two different routes will enable cyclists of different experience to take part.

Lucy Bone, the hospice's events and campaigns fundraiser, said: "We're really excited to be introducing this new cycling challenge to our 2017 events calendar.

"Hit the Downs MTB allows people to combine their love of cycling with raising money for Chestnut Tree House, helping us to continue to support local children with life-shortening conditions.

"It costs over £3.5m each year to provide all our specialist care services for local children, both at the hospice and out in the community across Sussex and south east Hampshire."

But, she added, less than seven per cent of the hospice's funding comes from national government to leave it largely dependent on the generosity of individuals and businesses.

A CHICHESTER student has seen her short story turned into a printed book.

Ellie Roberts, from Bishop Luffa School, was chosen as a winner of Sussex company Evonprint's Get Kids Writing competition.

THe story by Ellie, 14, called Princesses Love Pizza, won the secondary school category. As well as receiving five printed copies of her book, she also won a £50 Amazon voucher and £75-worth of book tokens for her school.

Evonprint's Adam Rowland said: "We're very passionate about education at Evonprint, so this competition was all about getting children creative by showing off their writing skills.

"THere were some fantastic entries and we had a hard time choosing the winners."

Two runners-up were also chosen in the category. Both attend THe Weald School in Billingshurst.

CHICHESTER Art Society’s popular Figures & Faces workshops have returned on Tuesday afternoons after the holiday break and offer opportunities to develop the skills of life drawing and portraiture.

Good observation underlies all successful painting and there is no better way of working at that than through portrait and life study.

THe sessions are particularly valuable for anyone wanting to improve their competence and there is a friendly, supportive atmosphere. We like to welcome new artists to the group!

Sessions alternate weekly between life study and portrait study, but a life study session can be used for portrait work if wished and a few artists do that.

Chichester's Moore does her country PostSport proud in Bermuda Triangle challenge Tim Ridgway Athletics sport@sussexpost.com CHICHESTER'S Rebecca Moore emerged with two podium finishes for her country after navigating the Bermuda Triangle Challenge.

THe Chichester Runners member was one of six picked to represent England at the annual international competition.

And Rebecca did her country proud returning home with a second and a third in the three races.

Rebecca, who made her debut for her country at the Dublin International late last year, was picked for the England women's team with Gemma Steel and Jenny Spink.

THe team flew out a few days early to adapt to the hot, humid conditions of the Caribbean and for the opportunity to interact with the host families, who accommodated the team for the trip. A drinks reception was held on the THursday evening with dignitaries and local politicians. THe team enjoyed engaging with them and meeting other elite athletes due to compete at the event.

Friday evening kicked off the weekend of

running with the Front Street Mile - although Rebecca, along with the rest of the England team, opted out in favour of the other races to come.

Saturday marked the start of the England contested races with the 10k over a challenging hilly course.

THe women’s race saw the top three positions all claimed by the England team.

Rebecca finished third in 35:41, just behind Gemma Steel (33:56) and Jenny Spink (34:33).

Some of the England athletes also decided to contest the half marathon on the Sunday.

In the ladies race, Gemma and Rebecca romped home in first and second, in 1:14:26 and 1:18:02 respectively, rounding off a superb weekend for the team.

f Chi hope to return to action this weekend

CHICHESTER RFC are fully rested and raring to go to get their fight against relegation back up and running again this weekend.

After a disappointing autumn, the Blues have put together a run of three wins from five as they look to pull themselves away from the bottom of National League THree London and South East division.

THe march was halted by the weather last weekend, with the trip to Sutton and Epsom falling victim to the frost.

But tomorrow sees Rob Lawrence's side return to action, hosting Hertford at Oaklands Park (2.15pm).

THe Blues will be out to avenge their initial fixture earlier in the season, when they slumped to a 49-0 hammering at the Hertfordshire side's ground in Ware.

But they will not have it easy, with the

visitors sitting third in the league and cruising past Guildford 42-10 last time out.

With no games surviving the weather in the division, both sides will have had an extra week off to rest and ready themselves.

Chi remain third-bottom and four points behind Southend directly above them.

THey will be hoping to replicate the match against Dorking last time out when a strong team performance and solid defensive display saw the Blues seal an 18-13 win.

Lawrence's side hope a repeat of that against Hertford could see them lifted out of the bottom three for the first time in months.

Elsewhere, and Bognor will be in action tomorrow, hosting Old Cranleighans at Hampshire Avenue (2.15pm).

Doug Millen's side currently sit second bottom of London THree South West division and are in need of a victory.

THe visitors will not be the easiest of opponents, as they make the trip from Surrey sitting third in the league.

Lions strike late to give Seagulls' starlets a cup scare

PAGHAM gave Brighton & Hove Albion's under-23s a Sussex Senior Cup scare before eventually losing out to the potential English Premier League stars of the future.

Despite falling three goals behind to the Seagulls' starlets, the Lions kept on fighting to the end.

A 25-yard strike from Lloyd Rowlatt and Keiron Pamment reduced the arrears in front of a decent crowd at Nyetimber Lane.

But Albion hit back, emerging 5-2 winners to cruise into the quarter finals.

THe match on Wednesday had already been postponed a number of times, initally due to fixture congestion and then frosty weather.

It meant the Lion's RUR cup semi- final with Crawley Down scheduled for last Tuesday has been put back to next month (February 11).

All eyes are now on the league, where Pagham currently sit fourth in the SCFL Premier. Heavy frost meant a planned home match against Peacehaven and Telscombe was postponed last weekend.

Next up for Mark Bennett's side is mid-table Horsham YMCA, who travel to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm).

Sidlesham in lighting plea Chi boss surprised at league form Ne Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com SIDLESHAM have made a renewed appeal for financial help as officials look to usher in a new dawn at the Recreation Ground.

THanks to a fire, floodlights at the village club's pitch have been out of action for years.

THe failure to get them repaired saw the club relegated to SCFL Division Two last season.

But with the club performing well on the pitch and a new committee strengthening the set-up off it, a renewed appeal has now been made to raise the ÂŁ11,000 needed to bring the lights back into use.

Committee member Caroline Henry-Evans said: "If we don't manage it, then we can't get promoted at the end of the season.

"We have until the end of the season so April at latest. We have to show the league that we are in the stages of fixing for them to promote us."

Under the direction of former

Chichester City manager Daren Pearce, Sidlesham have made great strides this term.

THey are currently second in SCFL Division Two, five points behind local rivals Bosham.

Pearce, who is also chairman of the club, has established a new committee and drawn up a five-year plan for the club.

Links have also been formed with Chichester City Ladies, which means their development side plays home games at the Rec. Work is underway as well to repair the ground's stand and improve the training pitch.

After their match last weekend was postponed due to the weather, Pearce's side return to action tomorrow with the Sids hosting Worthing Town Leisure in the second round of the division two cup (1.30pm).

With the club also in the semi- final of the Sussex Intermediate Cup, hopes are high that the Sids can win some silverware this season.

club's best ever performance in the FA Vase.

But the Chi boss believes that his side still have a lot more to give - even though a number of key players will be unavailable in the coming weeks.

Speaking to the Post, Rutherford said: "It's quite surprising that we have gone until now with just one defeat.

"I don't think that we have played extremely well all season, we just seem to grind out

"We always keep going and we work quite hard and so it's credit to the team that we have done as well as we have."

Chi lost ground on Haywards Heath in second after the Lillywhites' match against Newhaven was postponed last weekend.

A win for Heath at Lancing means the gap between the two is now four points although Chi do have two games in hand.

Rutherford's side return to action tomorrow, when they travel to Crawley Down (3pm), seeking to extend an unbeaten league run which began at the start of September.

THey will be out to do one better than when the sides met earlier in the season at Oaklands Park - a late Marc Pelling strike denied Chi all three points in the 2-2 draw.

THe Green and Whites will have to do it without some key men, though.

Daniel Hegarty, goalkeeper Anthony Ender and top scorer Scott Jones will all be missing in the coming weeks due to holidays.

Rutherford admitted it was frustrating. But with the club not applying for promotion this year, he said he would rather players took time out now if they had to, rather than next; as he is expecting the side and the club as a whole to push on next term in search of a place in the Ryman South.

He said: "It would be nice to have the squad together most of the year. We will struggle."

BOSHAM return to SCFL Division Two action tomorrow looking to extend their lead at the top of the table.

After being near unbeaten all season, Andy Probee's side are currently five points clear of second-place Sidlesham.

With their rivals in cup action, the Robins know that a win at home to Upper Beeding tomorrow (2pm) could stretch their advantage to eight points.

With last week's match called off and the week before seeing Bosham in cup action, Probee's side have been waiting three weeks to bounce back after suffering their first league defeat of the season against Jarvis Brook. In SCFL Division One, Selsey will be hoping for a better defensive performance after shipping 15 goals in the last three games,

the latest being a 5-1 home loss to Lingfield a fortnight ago.

THe Blues will be up against it, though, having to travel to Bexhill to play league leaders Little Common, who have netted 71 times in 24 games so far.

Selsey have lost twice to the Commoners already this term, including a 5-0 hammering in the Sussex Senior Cup. In the West Sussex Premier League Nyetimber Pirates host Rogate 08 at Bognor Sports Club (2pm), fresh from beating Bognor-rivals Predators 2-0 last weekend.

In the FA Women's Premier League South West, Chichester City Ladies are due to travel to the Isle of Wight on Sunday to play Shanklin (2pm). THe green army are top of the league but have not played for a fortnight.

Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com ROCKS boss Jamie Howell insists there's no secret to his side's second half spirit.

Bognor extended their unbeaten run to 11 last weekend, comprehensively beating Canvey Island 5-0 in chilly surroundings at the aptly named Frost Financial Stadium.

THat was despite Howell admitting that the side didn't fully click until after the break.

It is the fifth game in a row where the top of the table Rocks have picked up the pace in the second period. But Howell insists it's nothing to do with the words he utters to the team in the dressing room.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "I don't think there's a secret. Just some times that's the way the game works out. It gives you a chance to have a look at opponents and then have a think about how to break them down.

"Our fitness has been impressive, though, and it's been pleasing to see how we keep going for the full 90 minutes."

THe 5-0 win against Canvey saw James Fraser and Jimmy Muitt grab goals. THat was followed by on-loan striker Elijah Adebayo netting his first hat-trick for the Rocks. Howell said he is still not sure if Fulham youngster's initial onemonth loan period will be extended.

He said: "I don't know, to be honest. We have

got another two weeks to go and then after that I will speak to them and we'll see what happens.

"He's been great for us and it looks like he's really enjoying his football."

THe Rocks return to action tomorrow, welcoming bottom side Grays Athletic to Nyewood Lane (3pm). THen it's on the road for a Tuesday night trip to Sussex rivals Burgess Hill Town (7.30pm).

Bognor have already recorded 1-1 draws against both sides earlier in the season.

But with Grays and Burgess Hill deep in the bottom half of the Ryman Premier, hopes are high that the Rocks can extend their lengthy unbeaten run.

If there is a negative during that time, it's that Bognor have only kept one clean sheet in the last six matches.

Howell said: "We're not really looking at the back, to be honest. A lot of the work is done in pre-season in terms of structure and we then we give a few gentle reminders in the week.

"I think overall we have got the best defensive record in the league, alongside Havant.

"THat's a credit to the whole defence, and especially Dan Lincoln in goal. Since he's come in, he has been exceptional."

Striker Jimmy Wild is still a doubt as he battles back from a knee injury while Lorenzo Dolcetti and Ed Sanders may be made available again to SCFL Premier side Chichester City.

'Rocks cannot afford complacency' Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com THERE is a buzz around Nyewood Lane, one that is getting louder every week as the Rocks promotion march rolls on.

As the season moves beyond the congestion of Christmas and past the halfway point, Bognor are still sitting pretty at the top of the Ryman Premier.

As most fixtures were called off last weekend due to the freezing weather, Jamie Howell's side had the chance to give themselves some breathing room.

Swapping the seaside of Sussex for the coast of Canvey Island, the Rocks downed the Gulls 5-0, returning home from Essex with a four point lead at the top of the table.

THe challengers are getting their act together.

Both Havant and Leiston have games in hand and the quality to string a series of results together.

But points in the bag do matter at this stage of the season.

As Bognor know all too well from last season, when the fixtures start coming thick and fast, it's hard to keep the consistency.

THe C-word is something Howell's side are

not struggling with at the moment.

Since being outplayed away at Tonbridge Angels at the start of December, the Rocks have been on a heavenly run and are undefeated in 11 in all competitions.

With two games against sides languishing towards the bottom of the league to come this week, some may be thinking that six points must follow in the next four days.

But Howell knows the Rocks must keep their focus.

He said: "THere's a chance for complacency but it's my job to make sure that's not the case.

"I'll be reminding the players that we got beat at home by Hendon, who have struggled this year. I also know that Grays have beaten Worthing at home, too, which is no easy feat.

"We would be foolish to take things lightly."

WELL, I don’t want to jinx things but we are on a good run at the moment.

Touch wood, we should be still there come the end of April!

We have been unbeaten since December 3. Long may this continue.

With only Jimmy Wild out with injury at the moment, it seems that the team is nearing full-strength again.

I believe the loaning out of Ed Sanders and Lorenzo Dolcetti to Chichester City is a required move for both concerned.

THey need game time. We can recall them whenever we like so that’s the most important point to remember.

As I have said in recent columns I believe they have both impressed but with Chad Field and Sami El-Abd doing so well in central defence and with Dan Beck returning to fitness, it will be hard to leave certain players out.

It must be difficult for Darin and Jamie to pick a team with so many players available.

It’s great to see a large number vying for spots in the starting line-up.

A visit from in-form Enfield Town soon followed our progression in the County Cup. Before kick-off, everyone was looking at the next two games as ones which can turn the promotion race upside down.

A draw was a good result in the end for Bognor.

It was great to see Elijah Adebayo getting on the scoresheet for the first time on his home debut.

It looked to be one of those typical afternoons when we went behind early in the first half. But some words in the dressing room at the break and a real determination in the team saw them come from behind to get the draw in this fixture.

Enfield, though, had plenty of chances - but in conclusion I thought it was a nice result against a solid team.

THe same trend happened again in the home game against Needham Market the following Tuesday.

THe team leaked an early 18th minute goal. Meaning they had to produce to get

back in the game. And so they did!

Jimmy Muitt hit a wonderfully flighted shot into the top right corner. A fantastic finish - goal of the season contender no doubt.

THen Alex Parsons found James Fraser with a pinpoint cross and he headed it in. It was a great win. And one that might be very important come the end of the season.

And so it was that we travelled to Canvey Island with our Rocks On Tour coaching travel subsidised by the BRTFC Supporters Club.

Canvey are really struggling this season. You could see from the way they played that their attacking play was good but they lacked something in the final third.

Nearing half-time, they really should have scored against us.

But Bognor made them pay with some clinical finishing and taking the chances afforded to them.

Fraser and Muitt scored in the first half and then Adebayo netted a hat-trick to take the Rocks travelling fans (and some Southend and Bolton supporters apparently due to a nearby postponement) home happy.

I did say in my match report that the scoreline was rather a flattering headline due to the amount of chances Canvey wasted, but we did what we had to and won the game convincingly in the end.

I still believe Canvey can get out of the mire - but they need to find the net. Apparently, their main striker had played 14 and scored 0 - so that tells you the problem there!

I will be at Nyewood Lane to see the Rocks take on Grays Athletic tomorrow. We must maintain this momentum!

Despite their lowly position, you just can’t underestimate any team in this league. As this goes to print, we are four points clear at the top.

It’s getting results in these games against the bottom teams that may be the difference between taking the title or not. Hope to see you all there cheering on the Green Army!
