THe Friends of Bognor Regis Pier put together the unique celebration for the monarch's latest milestone birthday in commemoration of her links to the town

Christopher Sandamas, the chief clerk to the Queen, has told the Friends that Her Majesty regarded the gesture as a 'splendid album'.

"THe Queen was delighted to see the thousands of thoughtful messages sent by members of the local community and further afield in honour of her birthday," he wrote to the Friends' chairman, Jan Malpas.

Train strikes have cost UK millions, says university

THE economic impact of the Southern Rail strikes has cost the UK hundreds of millions of pounds, according to new research from the University of Chichester.

A study led by Dave Cooper, Professor of Management and Economic Development, revealed the total cost of the dispute to the country’s GPD could be as much as £300 million.

THe industrial action taken by ASLEF and RMT over proposed recently reached its 27th day having started in April this year.

THe study by Professor Cooper explored the impact on productivity of both the RMT and ASLEF union strikes.

THe report calculated the total economic costs to the thousands of commuters who were delayed, have missed work, or have been forced to stay at home.

Professor Cooper said: “THe findings put the impact on the economy at about £11 million for every day and, if the next scheduled strike days go ahead, the total would be brought to just under £396 million.

“In reality this may be higher as it does not account for other impacts such as loss of sales, impact of travel delays, staff morale and motivational issues, or

individual loss of income.

“THe strikes in December could cost between £47 million and £55 million and will impact London’s retail and service economy at a critical time of the year small businesses will be unable to absorb these additional costs and individuals are losing their jobs as a result.”

THe dispute is over the company's plans for drivers to control the doors instead of guards.

Unions are concerned about whether or not it is safe.

Soldiers are on standby to drive rail replacement bus services during the strikes.

Military leave could be cancelled and soldiers could be asked to drive buses carrying passengers in the worst hit areas.

THe strikes are the worst disruption to rail services in 20 years. It has affected hundreds of thousands of commuters since it began.

THe next strike takes place on Saturday and runs through until Monday.

THere will be more strike action on Monday, January 9, until Saturday, January 14.

A CHILDREN'S hospice has been chosen as the charity of the year for 2017 by Sussex Police.

Sussex Police has announced Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice for Sussex, will be the Chief Constable’s Charity of the Year.

THe charity cares for 300 children with life-shortening conditions across East and West Sussex as well as South East Hampshire, providing care at their purpose-built hospice in Arundel and in families’ own homes across the region.

Chief Constable Giles York said: "I am really pleased to be supporting such a worthy and deserving cause and was really moved by a recent visit to the hospice.

"Having seen first-hand the fantastic facilities provided by Chestnut Tree House I am particularly keen to help raise awareness of this charity.

"THe compassion, care and support that is available to terminally ill children and those with lifeshortening conditions is simply incredible."

Chloe's team devise a recipe for success in annual pram race

FIRST-TIMER Chloe Archer and her friends cooked up a winning entry in this year's Pagham Pram Race.

Chloe, 20, Olga Podplomyk, 21, and Marietta Caira and Emily Dawling, both 20, took along wooden spoons as part of their Baked Off entry to the annual Boxing Day fun.

But, instead of coming last, the teammates from the Bognor Regis area took first place in the women's section of the festive spectacular.

Chloe said: "We are surprised and really happy to have won. We just entered for a laugh. We will celebrate in THe Lamb afterwards.

"All the members of my family have done this race and, being the youngest member, I wanted to take part too. We will definitely be coming back next year."

THe race winners, Big Wave Rider, also spanned the generation gap. Father and

son Peter Batty and Elliot Batty crossed the finishing line at THe Lamb after a close battle with three clowns.

THe pair, who live opposite the pub, swopped places this year with Peter, 53, in the pram and Elliot, 21, pushing after their initial joint entry two years ago.

Peter, said: "I've entered the race every time since I've been here for the last 20 years, apart from last year, and I've won it several times.

"It's good to win again and it's nice to pass the race on from generation to generation. It's a fun event and it's nice after Christmas to let loose.

"Everybody is so friendly here, it's unbelieveable. I'm sure the crowds get bigger every year. We will be back in 2017."

THe latest race was the 71st to be held in an unbroken sequence which stretches back to the inaugural race in 1946.

As reported, the Friends began working on the project last February. THey gathered the best wishes - some illustrated - with a variety of signing sessions, visits to schools and social media posts.

As well as the Bognor Regis area and UK, the greetings to the Queen came from around the world.

Sweden, New Zealand, THailand, South Africa, Canada and the USA were among the countries represented.

THey were combined into the album which measures 24ins high, 4.5ins deep and 18ins wide. It was taken to Buckingham Palace by the five-strong combined communications group of the Friends. THey returned to the palace recently to collect the album after they had received the letter from Mr Sandamas to the delight of the group of supporters of the pier.

Mrs Malpas said: "It's a fantastic letter after all the work that went into the album.

"To receive something like this, and to know Her Majesty has actually touched the album, is absolutely brilliant. We are so thrilled with the response."

Post `Missing man found A MISSING Bognor Regis man has been found safe and well.

John 'Colin' Porter, 77, who had been admitted to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, for observation following a head injury, was discovered in another part of the hospital on Friday morning having disappeared the previous night.

Diabetes prevention RESIDENTS at risk of type-2 diabetes are to be offered healthylifestyle support to help them prevent the condition developing.

THe scheme will see people offered 13 sessions focusing on exercise, education and lifestyle changes.

West Sussex County Council, Coastal West Sussex, Horsham and Mid Sussex and Crawley Clinical Commissioning Groups are working together on the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

THe national programme is a collaboration between Public Health England, Diabetes UK and NHS England.

GPs are being asked to identify residents who would benefit.

Christine Field, the county council's cabinet member for wellbeing, said: “I would encourage people to take up this scheme if you are offered it."

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk A FIREFIGHTER has marked the end of a year of fundraising in support of his sister who died after suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Alex Mould, from East Wittering Fire Station, has undertaken 12 challenges this year.

THey have all been to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Firefighters Charity.

In 2014, Alex and his family marked the 10th anniversary of his sister’s Melissa's death.

In honour of his sister who was just 19 when she died, Alex set himself the target of completing ten different challenges in 10 months in 2014.

It was so successful that he decided to take on 12 challenges in 12 months this year.

THis final challenge saw Alex, his firefighter colleagues, and their partners cycling from East Wittering Fire Station to Chichester town centre, all dressed as Father Christmas. THe bike ride was 22 miles long.

Alex said: "I’m delighted to have reached the final stage of my 12/12 challenge this year, to help raise awareness of the devastating impact cystic fibrosis has on sufferers and their families.

“My sister was my hero and everyday was a struggle for her.

"So when I decided to do these challenges I wanted them to be tough, and to also include the family.

"I decided to do the 12/12 to continue to help raise awareness of the disease, as there is still no cure and life expectancy is short."

THis year, Alex’s challenges have spanned land and sea, including a 24hour row-a-thon, an eight-day hike along the North Downs Way, the National THree Peaks challenge and an alternative triathlon of cycling, horse-riding and kayaking. He also cycled 100 miles from East Wittering up to Woking.

"I’ve loved every minute of this year’s challenges, even when the going got really tough," he added.

"Special mention must go to my family and all my fellow firefighters at East Wittering.

"THe support they’ve shown me throughout the year has been unwavering and I couldn’t have completed the challenges without them."

Alex received the Special Recognition Award at THe Observer Community Awards for his charity work.

He has raised nearly £8,000 for his charities to date.

Leader calls for publication of A27 consultation results

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE Leader of West Sussex County Council has written to Highways England to urge it to publish the results of the A27 consultation in Chichester.

Earlier in the year, Highways England put forward five different options for improvements around Chichester.

Residents were then invited to comment on each proposal and choose a favoured option.

But now, Louise Goldsmith has told Highways England to publish the findings of its 10-week public consultation, and has said to do otherwise would ‘raise suspicions of a process that lacks transparency and openness’.

Louise now wants Highways England to publish the consultation data relating to all five proposals in advance of any announcement of a preferred option.

Louise said: “"It is absolutely imperative to all residents in the area that there is total confidence in the integrity of the consultation process.

"Regrettably the Highways England Chichester A27 process has been marred from the beginning.

"THe whole consultation process has generated very strong feelings and emotions.

"THe majority of residents are deeply sceptical about the whole process, communities are divided and people are

feeling aggrieved.

“It could be that the consultation needs to be re-run and of course that could mean that the whole timescale could slip.

"But that may be what has to happen to ensure all residents have faith in the process.

"It is so important that we have the right solution based on all available information and I will do all I can to ensure this happens.”

Almost 5,000 people took part in the public consultation.

THe schemes cost from £47 million to £280 million.

THey range from a huge flyover and a southern linkroad to some small changes to the roundabouts.

Earlier in the month, campaigners from Chichester Moves on handed a letter to transport secretary Chris Grayling calling for the government to scrap plans for redevelopment over fears it will be ineffective.

Campaigners from the group will take part in a one mile walk tomorrow from Brick Giln Garden Centre at 2pm.

THey will view the Highways England options to introduce a flyover at Bognor Road.

Campaigner Jenny Cole said: "Why does Chichester need a flyover at Bognor Road /A27 to take the 40 per cent of through travelers on their way round the city?

JEWELLERY was stolen from two homes in Chichester.

Police are now appealing for witnesses following the burglaries in Chichester on Friday, December 16.

Some time between 11am and 7pm, a house in Bristol Gardens was broken into. A number of jewellery items including two wedding rings and some watches were stolen.

Other items included a Michael Kors watch with alternate rose gold and white links in the strap and a Diesel watch with a large silver face and white leather strap.

On the same day, a house in Maplehurst Road was burgled some time between 3pm and 8pm. THe rear patio door had been smashed.

Items stolen included a collection of Royal Doulton figurines and various rings, necklaces and earrings. THere was also a watch with an engraving reading 'To Wendy on her 21st birthday from Mum and Dad'.

PC Chris Finch said: "THese burglaries are currently being treated as two separate incidents however we are keeping an open mind and not ruling out the fact that that they could be linked.

"Investigations are currently underway. I would ask anyone who was near either of these addresses on Friday - and who saw any suspicious activity - to get in touch."

Schools at breaking point as funding crisis continues

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN and their families will continue to be disadvantaged as continued appeals for more funding for schools in West Sussex have been ignored by the government.

Earlier in the month, the Department for Education announced the details of the new funding plans known as the National Funding Formula.

But despite a campaign which was supported by headteachers, parents, pupils and governors, the government has not indicated that there will be any extra money to help before the new formula is introduced in the spring of 2018.

West Sussex County Council has calculated that the county would receive, on average, an additional £7.95 million in 2018/19 and £14.5 million when the new funding formula is implemented in full in 2020.

But this works out at an average increase of £79.32 per pupil in 2018/19 and £144.62 per pupil in 2020. Compared to other parts of the country, it would still see West Sussex pupils receiving less.

In a statement, the Worthless West Sussex campaign team said: "THe introduction of a new National Formula Funding formula should be positively acknowledged.

"Indicative (unconfirmed) funding statistics provided to West Sussex schools by the Department for Education shows an average increase of around 3 per cent in April 2018 and approximately 5 per cent by 2020.

"THese figures do vary significantly from school to school.

"Schools leaders in West Sussex have, however, noted continued high level concerns for their budgets both in the short and longer terms.

"Firstly there is no sign yet of any interim funding.

"Our budgets are at breaking point now and we need support for basic provision for April 2017.

"We cannot wait another 18 months for appropriate transitional support whilst other schools in England enjoy much better settlements under the existing framework for the upcoming financial year."

Without extra funding, school leaders fear that drastic changes will have to be made which include increasing class sizes, cutting the time that students spend in school and reducing staff numbers.

In October, a group of pupils went up to Downing Street to hand over a petition to the government asking for more money to support the county's schools.

THe statement continued adding: "Perhaps more significantly, early indications suggest that in real terms our budgets will be undermined by the continued introduction of other ‘hidden’ costs which are independently estimated at between 8-10 per cent of our revenues.

"If this occurs then schools will be at best in the same position as today.

"THis is extremely worrying as West Sussex children and their families will be continue to be disadvantaged.

"We will be liaising with local MPs and the local authority to look at next steps.

"THe government’s manifesto commitment to maintain school funding will be considered as will its spending priorities in areas that fall outside of the funding formula."

Parents heap praise on social workers in independent survey SOCIAL workers in West Sussex have been described as ‘brilliant’ and a ‘life saver’ in an independent survey of local families.

THe West Sussex Parent Survey collated feedback from 90 parents currently receiving services from Children’s social care and early help support from the THink Family service.

THe survey aimed to understand more about families’ experiences and included questions on whether they

feel listened to and whether they find the social workers reliable.

Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children said: “THe results of this survey are exactly what we expect from our social workers as our children deserve the best support possible.

“Our social care team and THink Family keyworkers do a remarkable job and it is great to see them getting the recognition they deserve.”

Warning to restaurants RESTAURANTS are being warned not to confuse customers by using mutton instead of lamb.

West Sussex Trading Standards have issued the advice as they continue to find issues with meat substitutions in restaurants.

Richard Sargeant, Trading Standards team manager at the council said: “THere is nothing wrong with restaurants using mutton as an ingredient – indeed some think it has more flavour than lamb, but they cannot then describe it as a lamb dish.

"Customers have to know what they are buying and many would be put off buying a ‘mutton curry’ for example.”

Blankets for homeless

Chichester College has been working with charity Blanket Angels to transform recycled grey utility covers into brightly coloured winter warmers for homeless people in the area.

THe blankets include labels with information about local shelters and organisations who can offer help or support.

Blanket Angels was set up by Anna Stephenson-Knight six months ago.

She works with local sewing clubs to create the blankets that not only provide warmth and comfort – but also details of where they can seek help.

THe staff and students have made 57 blankets.

Anna said: “I’ve been really pleased by the response from the college.

“People have been dropping in to design and make blankets – including people who have never used a sewing machine.

“I’m amazed we have made so many, I’m really grateful to all the staff and students who have given up their time for us.

“THese are more than just blankets – each one sees people putting a little bit of love and care into making them, which hopefully will provide a little bit of comfort as well as warmth.”

Abi Lomax is a second year fashion and textiles student.

She said: “We were asked if we wanted to make some blankets.

"It’s such a great thing to be able to help with.

“It’s really nice to be able to put our skills to good use by helping other people.”

However, not all the volunteers came from the college’s art department.

Andy Burgess, student enrichment officer at the college, was among those sewing for the first-time.

He said: “THis is the first time I’ve used a sewing machine and it has been a bit tricky. It’s for a really good cause, so I just wanted to help.”

Principal Shelagh Legrave said: "I think my mother would be shocked to see me at a sewing machine!

“As a college we pride ourselves on our community involvement, and enjoy helping out with projects like this one where we can.

“As the Chair of Trustees for Stonepillow, this is a cause that is close to my heart and I know how much of a difference one of these could make.

It’s a good excuse to start a fresh and make changes in your life for more positivity and production, and a happier healthier new you!

Before you can think about your health and happiness, why not try DE cluttering all of your life..for example…

Clean Out The Clutter It's difficult to re-focus when there is clutter and chaos. Reorganizing your work or living space clears the way for fresh, new and greater things to come about. Sort drawers and cabinets and discard items that you no longer have a use for or they no longer serve a purpose for you.

Interior Decorating Changing your environment can assist in moving out old and worn out energies, patterns and bring in the new. If you haven’t got the time or the finances to make big changes, make some small changes and see how powerful that can be. Moving furniture around, painting a wall, a new piece of artwork and putting some new pictures up are quick, inexpensive and easy ways to bring freshness to your living space.

Give your fitness routine a recharge Our bodies need change to keep muscles from becoming used to the same old thing. Add some new exercises to your routine or revamp the entire workout. But most importantly do something that you love and that

makes you happy!

Emotional wellbeing – Invest some time and energy into your emotional wellbeing. It’s just as important to look after your mental health, as it is your physical health.

Learn how to meditate, start some yoga, get out in the fresh air more, and learn a challenging new skill. Invest some money in having a regular massage, or some acupuncture, or a counselling session, hypnotherapy or EFT (Emotional freedom therapy).

Whatever you feel you need, invest and make it happen.

Health - Cook from fresh Cooking from scratch is a far better way to eat than processed packaged foods. All the goodness is available and if it's freshly prepared by your bare hands, it's got a whole lot more love gone into it! Get a new cook book to give you fresh and inspiring ideas, try new foods and use an array of herbs and spices as they all have a great impact on your health and immune protection this time of year. THe most important rule of fresh cooking is to be organised and have the right foods in your fridge!

2. Smoothies – THese are a great way

of keeping the fibre in the foods and brilliant if you have any digestive issues (let's face it that’s a lot of people this time of year!!). You can be really experimental with your smoothies and add super foods and good oils such as evening primrose into the mix (evening primrose is great for your hormones).

You can add chia seeds to help keep your blood sugar balanced, and mix with coconut water to help keep your

electrolytes in check. Mix fruits and vegetables together so you don’t get too much of a sugar hit. THings such as bananas, blueberries, avocados, spinach, kale and cucumber make a delicious mix and keep your energy high.

3. Soups – they are so easy to make and

very healthy. THey help keep weight at bay and can keep you feeling full. You can't really go far wrong when making a soup, and chucking in seasonal

vegetables and herbs and spices keeps the cost down too.

Sweet potatoes, celery, onions, garlic, carrots, winter squash, turmeric and chili make a massive power punch of nutrition. You can make a big batch and freeze for days when you are more rushed!

Most importantly enjoy your foods and the wonderful health that they give you for the New Year!

Teenage Growing Pains

TEENAGERS would be the last group of people thought of when it comes to needing physiotherapy. However, it is more common than it seems. We spoke to Lindy Griffiths, pictured above, of Lindy Griffiths & Associates for more information: "As a Chartered Physio and mother of three teenage boys, I know only too well how challenging it is to cope with the huge spurts in growth that take place between the ages of 13 and 16.

"When teenagers are injured many clinicians will only look at the specific problem area whether it’s pain on the underside of the foot or heel, hamstring strains, swollen clicky knees or any number of recurrent back problems.

Strengthening exercises and rest are of course important, but the relief could only be short term if the underlying problem is not diagnosed and corrected.

"Our motto is “treat the cause not just the symptoms” and this is especially relevant in growing, active teenagers where it’s vitally important to understand how the injury

happened in the first place. If the pain has increased during or soon after a growth spurt with no physical injury then it’s likely that the problem has another cause. And this needs to be identified.

"We understand the mechanics of the human body and always start with a physical examination when the patient is standing upright. This will show us if, for example, the pelvis is rotated or if the bones at the base of the spine are not moving correctly putting extra strain on the dominant side – often the right leg.

"Typical treatments include a course of electrotherapy to relax the muscles followed by mobilisation that corrects the posture and exercises and advice to follow in the home.

Most growing teenagers respond very quickly to treatment and in one or two sessions they can be back to normal.

Elaine Johnstone-Builth passes on the expertise she has gained from 30 years of giving people their lives back with a range of training courses at Physical Solutions.

Jenny’s Journey

IT’S that time of year. You know the feeling; you’ve over indulged, zips are tight, body bulges are rampant and clothes strain to breaking point. Yes it’s time for yet another new year’s resolution to lose weight and get fit.

THe easy bit is making the resolution. THe hard bit is keeping to it. Over the next few weeks many will vow to get in shape and recapture the time when they were slimmer and fitter. Many sadly will fall by the wayside but as an incentive to those who really want to achieve their goal, here’s a personal tale of success.

Jenny is a school teacher in Bognor Regis spoke of her fitness journey with the Arena. She said: “I have always been a big girl.

At nearly 6ft tall I could carry the weight. But when, on the completion of my teacher training in July 2011, I reached nineteen and a half stone, life had to change; so the 'nothing nice' diet as I called it started in January 2012.”

Realising that she would need help and advice in her undertaking, Jenny joined the Arena Gym, where she was advised on the safest and most effective way to achieve her goal. Just recently the ice rink has announced its three designated sessions on New Year's Day for wheelchair users. Slots can be booked in advance by wheelchair users to use the rink alongside other skaters including their friends and family in reduced number sessions to ensure everyone's safety.

THe rink is open everyday from 10am until 10.15pm, and sessions are one hour long. Although it is possible to buy tickets fro your session on the day it is advisible to book in advance to make sure you get the time you want.

Tickets start at £8.50 for children and are priced £13 for adults.

Selsey have Storrington in sights after six goal mauling in derby SELSEY were smashed for six as East Preston showed no Christmas cheer in an SCFL Division One south coast derby.

Joe Clarke got the Blues off to a flying start with a goal inside the first 60 seconds.

But after that it was all East Preston, with EP scoring five without reply.

Lukas Franzen-Jones bagged a hat-trick, while Jared Rance and Dan Huet each got themselves on the scoresheet.

Selsey had a brief moment of cheer when Jake Ebling scored with five miniutes to go.

But Huet popped up again as time ticked down to condemn Selsey suffered their heaviest league defeat of the season so far.

THe loss sees Steve Bailey's young side drop into the bottom half of the table for the first time in a month.

But they will have chance to bounce back on Monday, as the Blues host Storrington at the Bunn Leisure Stadium (11am).

THe visitors have been in good form of late, unbeaten in nine and last losing in the league away at Seaford at the end of October.

Bailey will be hoping his charges can put the bad result behind them and get their season back on track.

When the two teams met earlier in the season it was a seven goal thriller.

Pagham strike late in Chi draw CHICHESTER City and Pagham shared the Christmas spoils in an 1-1 draw on Boxing Day. THe fierce rivals pulled no punches in the match which saw third play fifth in front of a bumper crowd at Oaklands Park. In a game short on quality, the home side spurned a number of chances to take the lead.

THeir endeavours were eventually rewarded when a Keiran Hartley strike ten minutes from time looked to have secured all three points for the Lillywhites.

But Lions striker Scott Murfin replied late on to ensure Mark Bennett's side made the short trip back to Nyetimber Lane with a point.

THe result means both Chi and Pagham lost ground on SCFL Premier leaders Shoreham and second place Haywards Heath Town, who both won on Boxing Day. THe Lions in particular have a lot to do - with a disappointing December seeing them slip from third to fifth.

At the turn of the year, they

sit 16 points off top spot with their hopes of promotion to the Ryman South looking a distant dream.

Pagham have a chance to get their season back on track on Monday, welcoming Wick to Nyetimber Lane (11am). THe Lions won the return fixture in September, thanks to a Scott Murfin strike on the stroke of half time.

A follow-up victory will set Bennett's side up nicely for a trip to Haywards Heath on January 7, when a win is a must if Pagham are to keep up their hopes of a promotion push.

Meanwhile, Chi will be looking to close the gap on the sides above them at Arundel on Monday (11am).

Miles Rutherford's side are unbeaten in the league since the start of September, and are bookies, favourites to win the match against a side that are struggling towards the bottom of the league.

THat would set his team up nicely for the FA Vase last 32 match with Devon-based Buckland Athletic at Oaklands Park on January 7.

Joe Warner and two goals from Matthew Searle put Storrington in the driving seat.

But Selsey matched them all the way, with Ryan Chittock and Joe Clarke, as well as an own goal seeing the Blues draw level with 20 minutes to play.

However, a late strike from Warner saw Bailey's side come out worse off in one of the matches of the season so far in Division One. Late goals and a lack of consistency have haunted Selsey this season and stopped them from making a serious push up the table.

THe visitors were gifted a fourth minute lead as a misplaced pass was intercepted by Charles Romain, who went on to finish.

Howard Low had the home side level on the half-hour, before Selsey took the lead for the first time four minutes before the break through Tom Groom.

But a late strike from Lewis Levoi with just four minutes to go meant that the Blues had to settle for a point, for the sixth time so far this season.

With up to four games in hand on sides around them, there is still a chance of a Selsey surge up the table as the season moves into its second period.

Bosham beat Sids to go clear BOSHAM have taken an eight point lead at the top of SCFL Division Two after beating second-place Sidlesham 3-1 on Boxing Day. THe Sids' were full of hope before the match that home advantage would give them an edge over their local rivals.

A Tom Bayley penalty early on gave Daren Pearce's side the lead after 20 minutes.

But Bosham bounced back, with Callum Fewell and Bradley Miles netting twice within the space of three minutes to give the Robins the edge at the break.

Alex Barnes then sealed all three points for Andy Probee's side meaning they end 2016 unbeaten, winning 15 of their 16 games so far.

THe Robins do not have long to get back into action, hoping to carry on their good form against Clymping at Walton Lane on Monday.

Sidlesham, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they make the short trip to Rustington. Both games kick off at 11am.

Elsewhere, and West Sussex Premier side Nyetimber Pirates warmed up for their fifth round Sussex Intermediate Cup tie with Sidlesham with a comfortable 4-1 win over Holbrook.

Towers, Turner, Cox and Haga-Hammond got the goals for the Bognor Regis-based side to ensure they remain well clear at the top of the table.

In the same division, Predators saw their game against Henfield postponed.

But there was some festive cheer for bottom side Hunston, who got a one-all draw at Rogate 08.

THe point means they have five points, three behind Petworth who are second bottom.

In the FA Women's Premier League south

division, Chichester City Ladies went into the Christmas break on the back of a 5-0 win over Keynsham Town.

Molly Clark bagged a brace while there was one goal each for Charley Wilson-Blakely, Jess Lewry, and Cherelle Khassal to keep Chi top of the table.

Next up for the ladies is a home match against Shanklin, which is scheduled for the new year.

Dragon Flyers duo bounce on to Taunton for UK finals

TWO young trampolinists have soared to more success and are ready to represent their schools on the national stage.

Fifteen-year-old Anya Johnston and 12 -year-old Sofija Kalnicenko have qualified to represent the south east region in the elite category of the zonal schools competition.

It will see the duo head to Taunton to take on competitors from around the country who have been selected as the best the UK has to offer. Coach Linda O'Leary, of the Bognor Regis-based Dragon Flyers club described it as a 'huge achievement'.

She added: "THe two girls have been put forward as the top three performers of their age group to jump off not only for individual medals but the glory of taking their school to national finals by finishing in the top three."

Johnston (Ormiston Six Villages Academy)

will jump in the under-19s category while Kalnicenko (Chichester Free School) has made it into the under-14s .

O'Leary said: "Flyers' performers have an excellent record at this event with many national schools finalists and medalists over the year ".

Also joining the girls in Somerset is newcomer William Foden (Bishop Luffa) who will take part in the under-14 boys novice competition in only his first year in the sport.

Dragon Flyers club holds its practice sessions at the Regis School in Westloats Lane.

It has more than 50 members, mostly aged between five and 19, drawn from the Bognor Regis, Chichester and Portsmouth areas.

Sanders' strike sees Bognor hold Havant to a draw to stay second Next Game

IT was a Boxing Day spectacle everyone was looking forward to - and Bognor did not disappoint holding Hawks to a one all draw in front of a bumper crowd of more than 1,300 at Nyewood Lane.

With the ground buzzing at the prospect of seeing second play third in the Ryman Premier, players from both sides gave their all to produce a nervy but enthralling contest Ryan Woodford gave the visiting Havant & Waterlooville the lead just before the break.

But a goal from Ed Sanders in the second period earned the Rocks a point and kept Jamie Howell's side in second, two points ahead of their Hampshire rivals and three behind Needham Market in top spot.

On reflection, most at Nyewood Lane will be happy with the result against a side that has spent big in a bid to return to Conference South.

Among them were Rocks old boys Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior, who both started for the visitors.

But it was Bognor who had their chances early on. First, James Crane had a driven shot saved by Ryan Young in the Havant goal.

THen, a forward ball by James Fraser found Alex Parsons on the run but he, unfortunately, lost control of it with the Hawks defence stretched.

Havant then took control - with Rocks' goalkeeper Dan Lincoln having to push over

a cross from Alfie Rutherford on 12 minutes.

On the half hour, Lincoln was called into action again saving low down from Prior who had beaten Sanders.

THe visitors' pressure paid off just before the break when Lincoln's punch saw Ryan Woodford rush in and head the ball into the net out of the goalkeeper's reach.

It remained that way until the hour mark when a short corner gave James Fraser space out wide. He then fired the ball across the goal which found its way to Sanders, who slotted it in off the post.

Both sides had chances to win the game.

Lee Molyneaux scored for Havant on 73 minutes but he was called offside as he timed his run wrongly before volleying in beyond Lincoln.

At the other end, Fraser did well to pass out wide to Harvey Whyte and his cross eventually fell to Ollie Pearce in space. But his curled effort was well saved by Young.

Jimmy Wild then forced the Havant keeper into a fingertip save after he slammed the ball towards goal on the rise.

Havant did try their best to put some pressure on at the other end.

But neither of the sides could get the winner and a draw was a fair result in the end.

Next up for Bognor is a trip to Met Police tomorrow before visiting Worthing on Monday.

Rocks' squad all set for tests BOGNOR'S small squad is set to be tested in the coming days as the Rocks face two tough tests in three days.

First up for Jamie Howell's side is a trip to Surrey to take on Met Police tomorrow (3pm).

THen, comes a local derby in the form of a trip to Worthing on Monday (3pm) in a match fans are dubbing "El Classicoast".

With a smaller squad than most in the Ryman Premier, Howell knows that he will be needing every single member to be ready to step up when called upon as the games come thick and fast in the festive period.

His task has been made easier in recent weeks with the return of a number of players to the first team fold.

Harvey Whyte is back in contention for a starting place while Jimmy Wild has recovered from a facial injury suffered in training.

THere is also a boost with Gary Charman looking fit again after nine weeks out with a leg injury.

All three got some match action in Bognor's 3-0 win against Horsham in the Sussex Senior Cup. Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "We have some big games coming up, some tough, tough games against Met Police and

Hill Town and a 4-0 thrashing of Lowestoft, a Worthing.

"I need to make sure that the players we side that beat Bognor just a few months ago.

THat good run has lifted the Rebels to tenth, put out there are ready both physically and a position they will want to hold on to after mentally."

THe match against Met Police tomorrow will securing promotion from Ryman South last certainly be a test, despite the Imber Court year.

With a decent Nyewood following set to side sitting fourth bottom.

THe Surrey side have lost just once in seven make the short trip to Woodside Road, the games in all competitions, that defeat coming stage is set for a cracking game to kickstart 2017 for Rocks' fans. last time out to local rivals Leatherhead.

Among the stand out performances during that time was a 2-0 win against Leiston, who are one of a number of teams who are pushing Bognor at the top end of the table.

Worthing are also on a good run of form, having won six in a row in all competitions.

I just hope that at the turn of the year, my team will continue to perform as well as before the end of 2016!

On our way to Folkestone Invicta on the fans coach, it was widely agreed that people would take a point from this match.

It looked as though we wouldn’t even get a draw at half time. THe team was 1-0 down with no light at the end of the tunnel in sight but in football you just never know.

How we were wrong! It was truly a game of two halves!

THe team showed terrific character to come back into the game. As it turns out all of the other five top teams won that day so the win turned out to be more crucial than first expected.

On the other hand it was typical that they all won after such a performance as that but it shows the competitiveness the league has this season.

On the way home, and with those three points in the bag, discussion turned to the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup game the following Tuesday.

Rocks were home to Horsham in the 3rd Round and expected to win. I was glad to see Gary Charman return to playing. He only featured in the first half but it was a positive sign. It was also a chance to rest some players and the management team took full advantage of this.

THe win means Bognor take on Shoreham away in the Quarter Finals of the cup, which will be not be an easy game. Shoreham are flying in their league at the moment so it could be a potential banana skin. With some big clubs still involved its sure to be a tough Semi-Final for the winner.

But the one we’d all been waiting for finally arrived on Boxing Day. Rocks welcomed Havant & Waterlooville to Nyewood Lane for this highly anticipated fixture. THe Hawks were doing well leading up to

this game with ex-Rocks Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior, as expected scoring regularly for the visitors before making the trip to Bognor.

THey were listed as starting in the game against us. No surprise there.

As most predicted it was a very equal match with Bognor going behind on 42 minutes just as I was expressing it would be nice to go in 0-0 at the break to my colleagues in the press box.

Ryan Woodford put the visitors in the lead. But Bognor came out stronger in the second half and equalised on 62 minutes with Ed Sanders again on the scoresheet.

THe action was good and with a crowd of 1,348 it was a great atmosphere. I think the important thing now is getting results elsewhere during the rest of the year and that will prove to be the difference as to whether we will be in the top five or not.

I shall look forward to the return tie at West Leigh Park in April though - I still think we have a good chance of beating them at their place.

Stand out players over the past two weeks have to be Ollie Pearce and Ed Sanders.

Both have really been on form recently and long may this continue.

Defensively Sanders does so much for the team, whilst its also good he is chipping in with goals as well. Pearce is doing really well too and was our main threat throughout our game at home to Havant.

As long as he avoids injury i am sure he will bag some more goals.

Don’t forget the earlier kick offs at Metropolitan Police’s Imber Court ground on New Year’s Eve and also the ‘ElClassicoast’ against Worthing’s Woodside Road on Monday 2nd January - both kicking off at 1pm.
