Council gets skates on for festive ice rink

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MEMBERS at a planning committee have approved plans for a Christmas ice rink in the city to run from November 24 to January 6.

THe debate on Wednesday was the second time councillors had to make a decision on the plans after measures to mitigate the noise had resulted in amendments to the scheme with two ‘tech zones’ rather than a single one and the method of securing the marquee structure to the ground being revised.

Mr Simon McGee, a supporter of the ice rink, said: "I run a local care business that supports older people in the local community.

"As I understand it, Priory Park was bequeathed to the community for community purposes. THis event's intentions is to provide a community spirit."

Another supporter, Mr Christopher Spink said: "If we don't do this, we will all become Ebenezer Scrooges. As far as I am concerned, we need something in Chichester, desperately."

THe applicant, Mr Edward White, said: "We understand and sympathise with those few who object and have tried to modify the proposals to mitigate their concerns. We have moved the generator as you know, and we have increased the acoustic fence. Both actions will reduce the noise for residents significantly."

Philip Robinson, who has replaced Richard Plowman as chairman of Friends of Priory Park described the park as the jewel in the city's crown, saying the proposals could tarnish it forever. He

said: "None of the objections we have listened to so far have objected to an ice rink as a focal point for Christmas festivities. It’s a good idea but our position is to be vociferous in the defence of the vulnerabilities of the park."

Conditions attached to the approval of the plans include a scheme for the making good of the ground and reinstatement of the grass and a scheme to deal with ice water melting from the decommissioning of the ice rink. Both these schemes must be submitted to the council within a month.

"THere will be a 2.4 metre fence around the fence. It will stand up there with no means of support which is a little tricky.

Any view of the Guildhall will not be so.

THe licence will be considered on THursday, November 22 by the Alcohol and Entertainment Licensing SubCommittee.

District council launches panel to collate views of city residents RESIDENTS across the Chichester area are being encouraged to join a special panel aimed at seeking views and opinions of households in the area.

by Chichester District Council as a way of finding out about the issues that matter most to residents, and gives people the chance to find out about the various consultations and surveys taking place throughout the year.

As well as the online opportunities, the council will also be organising events and focus groups to give Let’s Talk Panel members the opportunity to get more involved in some of the projects that the council is working on.

Cllr John Connor said: “We know how important it is to gather feedback and views from our residents and businesses, which is why we are launching the Let's Talk Panel.

“We want to make sure that as many people as possible are aware of the surveys and consultations that we hold. THey are often used to help our councillors make key decisions and our councillors will take account of people’s views before making a final decision.

"Residents’ feedback also helps us to improve our services and identify new ideas and ways of doing things.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A DANCE teacher is celebrating the first anniversary of her line dancing classes in Chichester.

Sue Wilkinson, from Southsea, has been a qualified dance teacher with the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) for over 30 years and started teaching line dancing 25 years ago in Bracknell, Berkshire.

Sue taught social classes and training competitors and worked as an activity co-ordinator in Chichester when she

decided to set up the classes.

She said: "I set up the class because I have a real passion for dance and believe strongly in the benefits. It is great fun and provides many health benefits.

"I chose line dancing because everyone can take part with no partner needed. We keep it easy and laugh a lot.

"I think people come for a number of reasons. We include everyone, we keep it simple, they get lots of exercise and they have made lots of friends. THe music certainly lifts our spirits.

"Line dancing is such a great way to get people out meeting other people having fun exercising and going home

happy."

A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.

Unlike circle dancing, line dancers are not in physical contact with each other.

Sue was presented with a cake on the anniversary by her students.

Des Hodnett, one of Sue's students, said: "Everyone is so friendly and we have learned so many dances."

"But as councillors we have to agree a plan delivering an annual number of homes fixed by central government.

When a housing figure goes down in one area, then somewhere else is going to need to accept a higher figure in order to balance the books and deliver the plan total.

"THe government inspector in approving our plan in 2015 laid down that a full review must be completed by 2020, in particular a review of the housing numbers.

"THe 2015 plan laid down a figure of 435 houses per annum within the local plan area. THe current government formula lays down a figure 40 per cent higher than that, namely 609 houses pa for our new plan. In addition, South Downs National Park Authority has asked CDC to provide up to 41houses per year. So the 2020 plan will have to identify deliverable sites providing in total up to 650 houses per year.

"Our choices of locations have to avoid the South Downs National Park and the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Beauty. We have to avoid the worst flood zones and we have to take account of the poor access to and from the Manhood."

decision at its meeting on November 20. If full council agrees, the consultation would take place over eight weeks, starting on December 13, and ending on February 7 – an extended time to take account of the Christmas and new year period.

At the meeting there were several questions from members of the public.

Mr Mike Dicker said: "On September 21, 2018, Cllr Potter at Boxgrove Village Hall announced that there is no point raising the A27 (at the meeting) as district councillors had been advised by officers that the RIS2 money would not be forthcoming.

"I have been seeking this advice since then under a Freedom of Information request and the matter is currently the basis of a complaint to the Information Commissioner.

"Why is the district council promoting a scheme when just three per cent of respondents to the 2016 public consultation supported option 3?"

Cllr Dignum responded to Mr Dicker, saying: "I want to assure everybody that the district council is working closely with the county council and remains totally focused on achieving improvements to the A27 bypass that will provide long-term benefits."

` New police officers SUSSEX POLICE have started the biggest intake of new police officers for over a decade.

THis has been made possible by the increase in police precept of an average £12 for a band D property, and the police and crime commissioner releasing £17 million from reserves.

It means that over the next four years, Sussex will have 200 more police officers on the front line than it does today.

Residents are already indicating that they would like even more. THe commissioner has opened a survey on her website to gauge potential support for raising more funding locally if the Government lifts the current cap on the police precept.

Review requested on wobbly bridge

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HIGHWAYS ENGLAND has asked for an independent design review for the footbridge over the A27 at Stockbridge.

Works to build a new Stockbridge footbridge have cost almost double the project's £877,0000 budget after remedial works to strengthen the bridge were required.

Tests in both April and August this year showed the crossing was moving unacceptably in certain conditions, which prolonged the project and brought total costs as of October 31 to £1,848,105.

THe independent review which Highways England has now requested will investigate whether there is a potential liability with the contractor for the additional works which have been required.

In a statement, Highways England said: "THis has not yet been determined and therefore we cannot confirm whether the contractor will be liable for the cost of additional remedial works."

THe bill for the project includes the original cost plus extra repair work, provision of a pedestrian footpath, CCTV, additional lighting and traffic management staff to patrol the route via the canal footpath.

In a response to a Freedom of Information request by the Chichester Post, Highways England said: "In this case, the structure exhibited some

unexpected movement under specific conditions.

"THe decision was taken to provide some additional stiffening to the structure to increase its natural frequency, and reduce its susceptibility to movement, before opening.

"THe additional testing and engineering required several months to fully understand the specific issues being experienced, prior to establishing the appropriate design solution.

"Further time was then required to source the appropriate materials and programme contractors to complete the work as well as completing additional testing prior to the opening of the footbridge to the public on Monday, October 1."

Planning delayed for homes at Bracklesham holiday park

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A DECISION over plans to build new homes on a former holiday park in Bracklesham have been delayed for the second time.

THe recommendation was deferred at Chichester District Council's planning committee on Wednesday.

THe former South Downs Village Holiday Park in Bracklesham Lane has not been used for its intended use as a holiday park since January, 2017, and has been used as temporary accommodation for agricultural workers.

Planning permission was granted in December, 2017, for temporary accommodation for 300 workers for one year.

THe item was withdrawn from the agenda of the September committee meeting in order to address issues relating to the proposed Clappers Lane access to the site.

THe application by Seaward Properties is for 85 new homes on the South Downs Holiday Village site of which 30 per cent (26 units) would be affordable homes.

THe proposals entailed removal of all existing buildings and structures on the site which includes flat-roofed singlestorey holiday chalet blocks.

East Wittering and Bracklesham Parish Council objected to the planning

application originally but confirmed in the meeting it now supported the plans.

Brian Reeves, from the parish council, said members now backed the scheme as they understood the site had been extensively marketed for a tourism use.

Officers confirmed at the meeting that three regional holiday park operators had shown initial interest but this did not proceed further due to the volume of capital investment required to rejuvenate the site and the size of the site.

Head of planning services, Andrew Frost, said: "THere was an enquiry from

a national operator. PGL activity centres for school children looked at it but they rejected it because they wanted a larger site. I think there is enough there to say that it has a good run in terms of marketing."

Councillors were concerned about the density of the scheme at 40 dwellings per hectare. THere was also debate over the illustrative layout showing driveways fronting on to Clappers Lane.

Cllr Tricia Tull said: "I think there is no doubt about it that the investment required to bring this site back into

holiday use would probably be enormous.

"I am assured and convinced that this a good site to go for as housing but I do have some severe reservations."

THis is a rural area. It's not long since that lane was completely fields. We are continuing to build small houses on dense site with small rooms and little community spaces."

Members agreed to defer the application for negotiations with the developer on the illustrative layout.

Student chefs put on the Ritz

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STUDENTS at Chichester College were ‘Putting on the Ritz’ when they welcomed chefs from the Earl of March into their training kitchens for a very special dining experience.

A team of first and second year hospitality and catering students worked under the tutelage of Giles THompson, owner of THe Earl of March and former executive head chef at THe Ritz in London, and his team of chefs to prepare a stunning three-course menu.

THe diners – mainly members and guests of the Solent branch of Chaine des Rotisseurs, an international gastronomic society dedicated to bringing together people who appreciate wine, cuisine and fine dining – were hosted at the college’s 64 Restaurant and served by hospitality students.

Autumn Roberts, 17, is in her first year at the college. She said: “I loved it! I mainly worked on the canapés, but it was a lot of fun.

“It was a really nice experience to work with the other chefs, and get to know how other people work in the kitchen.

“I’m planning to go into events

management so it’s good to have experience in all of the different areas and know that I’ll be able to understand all aspects of that job as well as help out!”

Giles, who was joined by his former Ritz sous chef, David Smith, added: “It was a great pleasure to team up with the college and have the opportunity to work alongside such a gifted set of students.

“THe reason we took a step back from THe Earl of March was to re-innovate old Ritz classics which are seldom seen today outside the realms of the West End and which behold great tradition in keeping with Chaine.”

At the heart of the Chaine philosophy is the encouragement of young talent in the catering and hospitality field, and this was evident at the evening with the guests treating the students to a resounding round of applause as well as praising the meal and service they received.

Kay Knowles said: “My meal was excellent. It was well delivered, well produced and beautifully cooked.

“I thought the students did very well.

THey were a little nervous I think, which is to be expected, but they did very well.”

THis is the first partner pop-up evening of the year, with more planned in the coming months.

Watercourse owners urged to maintain area to prevent floods DRAINAGE ditch owners are being urged to take action now to prevent flooding when wintry weather descends.

People with a watercourse, ditch, stream, river or culvert on or next to their land are known as ‘riparian owners’. THey are responsible for maintaining the watercourses to ensure they are not a flood risk to other people or properties.

Removing vegetation, grass, weeds, shrubs and other debris helps water to run freely and prevent flooding.

Following feedback from parish councils and community groups, the county council has updated its guides to riparian ownership and responsibilities. A new leaflet, short film, posters and more detailed guidance are available online.

THe Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group, a volunteer-led wildlife charity on the Manhood Peninsula, manages ditches and ponds for people and

wildlife.

Jane Reeve, from the group, said: “Riparian responsibility is important for the management of water to prevent flooding, which affects people’s lives and wellbeing, and for wildlife which is adversely affected by pollution and rapid water level rises.

“By gently managing ditches and waterways in the autumn, when they are dry and accessible, flood-risk can be reduced.

“Leaving some vegetation on the banks is the key, allowing plant roots and some growth to hold the soil and prevent erosion. Wherever wetlands are sympathetically managed for drainage improvement, wildlife moves in and the environment is improved and can become an attractive feature.”

` Gardening club MEMBERS of Donnington Gardening Club were treated to a wonderful display of outstanding images on Friday, November 2.

THe wildlife images, mainly birds, were taken in the British Isles and abroad by expert photographer Mike Read.

Mike explained in clear terms how he set up his camera and the use and effect of different focal length lenses.

He also showed close-ups of flowers and fungi and admitted he often used his car as a "hide" if suddenly coming across a photo opportunity.

He managed to get a wonderful shot of a large stag deer from his car. He left the group with renewed enthusiasm to always carry a camera and to see a picture in whatever they are looking at.

THe club will hold its annual dinner next month and then break until a new season of talks starts in February, 2019.

` Open meetings GILLIAN Keegan, MP for Chichester, is holding pub drop-in events to give constituents the opportunity to meet her and raise any issues or concerns they may have in a relaxed setting.

Her next pub tour venue will be THe Fountain in Chichester on Saturday, November 24, from midday to 1.15pm.

Goodwood race ahead to win best campaign award at RCA

Held this year at Aintree Racecourse, the Showcase & Awards, partnered by Moët Hennessy, Racing Breaks, Racing Post and Great British Racing, celebrate excellence and innovation in racecourse customer experience.

Across a sparkling awards night, there were a total of 15 awards handed out by special guests Sam Quek and Katie Walsh.

THe 2018 best campaign award was won by Goodwood for the supporting campaign behind the Magnolia Cup at this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Judges were impressed by the emphasis placed on competitors and their stories to help narrate this special event and drive both ticket sales and charity awareness.

Alex Eade, general manager of Goodwood Racecourse, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded best campaign at this year’s RCA Showcase Awards for the Magnolia Cup presented

by Swarovski.

"THe race has been an integral part of the Qatar Goodwood Festival since its inception and this year the buzz around

Memorial garden built for Oakwood

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN at Oakwood School in Chichester have been commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of THe Great War, with the school participating in a host of activities to mark Armistice Day. THe school has built a new Oakwood war memorial garden, which features a 'Tommy' silhouette from the British Legion's 'THere But Not THere' campaign.

Children from Year 2 to Year 6 have each created beautiful red ceramic poppies to adorn the garden, providing a powerful visual reminder to children of the school’s local military connections, remembering members of the school community who gave their lives.

THe youngest children are linking their curriculum studies with Chichester’s local community by building a memory box that shares anecdotes and photographs which recognise and appreciate the memories of elder family members and friends and their roles within wartime Britain.

THe curriculum for older pupils will focus on many aspects of the war, ranging from investigating the vast effect on all the countries involved, to technology and the roles that animals played, as well as looking at how children’s contributions during the war effort were valued.

“THe whole school is involved in honouring this anniversary and is deeply aware of the links it has with members

of our school community, past and present, and the wider community here in Chichester,” said Oakwood assistant headteacher, Yvonne Lee, who has led the project. “All of our staff have been involved in researching this project in order to deliver a thoughtful and appropriate curriculum for children of all ages at the school.

“We are delighted that our new war memorial garden will form a lasting legacy as a peaceful place to visit, pay our respects and simply appreciate nature and beauty.”

DRIED flowers picked by a West Sussex soldier at the Western Front have formed part of a poignant display at West Sussex Record Office.

THe display features items including letters and photographs marking 100 years since the end of World War One. THe flowers were collected by Private C. Colbourne and are part of the Record Office’s collection.

Visitors to the Record Office have also been able to view hundreds of crocheted poppies, made by volunteers and members of staff, which are on display in the reception area.

THere is also a display based on a beautifully decorated “sweetheart” pin cushion on loan from the Royal Sussex Regimental Museum.

Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council’s military champion and cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “Visiting the Record Office and seeing these objects first hand is an incredibly humbling and moving experience.

“So many people from West Sussex gave their lives in the war and it is important we remember their stories and honour their memories.”

Books about the war are available in all libraries in West Sussex this month.

THese will include memoirs, narrative histories, poetry and novels set during World War One. A silhouette of a soldier was also displayed on the lawn outside Edes House over the Remembrance weekend.

Young and old remember with an extra special service held in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER MP Gillian Keegan described Sunday's remembrance service as the most special she had been part of.

On November 11, the parade of services, cadets and dignitaries travelled from East Street to Litten Gardens to assemble at the memorial where the Chichester City Band were playing.

Some of the groups in the parade included 461 Chichester Squadron Air Training Corps Band, Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association, Royal Sussex and Queen's Regiment, Royal Military Police, West Sussex Fire Brigade, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Sussex Police.

THousands of people attended the service which started with ten rounds of gunfire from an 18pdr field gun by Garrison Artillery Volunteers, followed

by The Last Post and a two-minute silence at 11am.

Mrs Keegan, who laid a wreath in the city council's service, said: “It was a beautiful service. THere have been so many services I have been to because of the centenary of the armistice. We have had several at Parliament, I have been to several in London and schools across the districts and all of them have been wonderful.

"What I have really enjoyed is how many young people have been remembering the sacrifices of those

people 100 years ago and relating it to their freedoms today.

“Of course, the one in Chichester is the most special on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. I did a speech in Parliament where I researched a lot of people in Chichester and mentioned the statue made by Vincent Gray.”

THese words were echoed by the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, John Nelson, who laid the first wreath at the service.

He said: “Today is a very important day for us to remember. I think the ceremony today, which was extraordinarily well attended, demonstrated how important it is and it was very moving.”

A new sculpture was unveiled during the service which has been carved from a Sussex oak tree and depicts a back to back soldier who returned from the war to take up a former occupation as a gardener. It takes inspiration from a Private Alfred Smith, of the 4th Battalion THe Royal Sussex Regiment.

Dave Lucas, the sculptor, said: “THe whole project has been about four years in the running. THe sculpture is carved from an oak tree which fell in an allotment in Chichester.

"THe city council had the idea of using it for a sculpture. It’s taken about a month’s worth of work with the chainsaws and then the sanding of it for a few weeks after that. I am very proud. I do all sorts of pieces but this is by far the most meaningful piece I have done.”

Mayor of the city, Cllr Martyn Bell said of the service: “It was just so moving and so appropriate with the ten rounds

A small service was held in Priory Park, gifted by the 7th Duke of Richmond as a World War One memorial.

Richard Plowman stood by the WW1 sculpture of Maurice Patten, by Vincent Gray, which was next to the display of poppies on the mound, created by schoolchildren for the Priory Park 100 event. Maurice Patten joined the Royal Sussex Regiment in Chichester and died of his wounds at the start of 1916.

Sculptor Trudy Redfern took her horse made of driftwood to the event and read the poem, The Horse, by Ronald Duncan.

She said: "I thought the service went extremely well and I was so pleased to be part of this huge occasion. I felt that the horse was meant to be there.

"On a personal note, I was thrilled with the reaction to the horse. Everyone was so enthusiastic." and said they would really like the horse sculpture in the park permanently.

"I thought it was so relevant and just as I reached the last line, which says 'the horse', the bells started to ring as if on cue."

A special service was held in the afternoon at the secondary school with prayers and readings conducted by the clergy of the school, the Rev Paul Collins and the Rev Dr Alison Green.

At the start of the service, headteacher Austen Hindman said: "We come together in solemn remembrance to remember the sacrifices made in the First World War and all subsequent conflicts by people from many different countries, of many different religions, or none.

"We come together to reflect on what we have, because of what they gave. In this short service of commemoration, we quietly reflect on lives lost, lives shattered and lives altered by the types of events that most of us will hopefully never have to experience for ourselves."

Head of house, James Bonnet, former Royal Signals, said at the service: "Over the course of this week, you have had a chance to learn about why these events matter, in assemblies, in tutor time and in writing names on crosses which form a field of remembrance at the front of the school.

"THe transparent figures sat on the benches at the front of school symbolise those who did not return, the empty

spaces left on seats all around the country, but also symbolise the people who came back as a shell of the person they were.

"War is a terrible thing, and the scars are sometimes invisible."

Chichester mayor Martyn Bell said: "I found the ceremony so moving. THe way in which the students conducted themselves was very impressive. I just thought it was such a fitting service involving young students. It is so important that they remember."

MINISTER of state for school standards and local MP, Nick Gibb, joined Chichester Free School for a Remembrance Service on Friday.

Mr Gibb has been Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton for more than 20 years and has had an active interest in Chichester’s newest school, the only all-through school (for ages four to 19) in the area.

After the service, Mr Gibb toured the school and met students for a Q and A session about what concerns them in education.

Questions included funding, mental health support, universities and constituency support issues. THe A-Level government and politics students also managed to secure

themselves a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

In preparation for the Remembrance service and to honour this very poignant time of year, the school completed an installation with beautiful poppies made by students, with moving messages about the relatives the poppies were honouring.

Mr Gibb said: “It was a pleasure to join the staff and students of Chichester Free School in their Remembrance Service this Friday.

"I was particularly impressed by the many homemade poppies on show and the presence of the Combined Cadet Force offered a poignant reminder of what we fought to protect during World War One, as well as what was lost.”

Poppy tributes put on show across the city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk COMMUNITIES and businesses have been coming together to mark the centenary of the end of World War One. Several organisations used window displays to pay tribute to the sacrifices made 100 years ago to defend this country.

Other community groups came together to decorate areas in their villages and towns, including East Beach Evangelical Church, in Selsey.

A group of people, including children joining in at half-term from the congregation, met for six sessions to make poppies from recycled plastic bottles.

One participant, Joyce Slater, said: "I had seen a similar display when visiting relatives in County Durham and decided East Beach could add to the tributes to the fallen in Selsey by placing poppies all around the church door.

"We asked everyone to collect plastic bottles and set to work on a production line.

"We had some tricky moments, especially putting them up, but it was very worthwhile and we plan to leave them up for all of November."

Over the last seven months, staff at Closs & Hamblin in North Street have been promoting a ‘knit a poppy’ for their window to celebrate the 100th anniversary.

Store manager Kathy Coleman said:

"We have had companies bring the poppies in, in wicker hampers, the general public knitting one or two, or dozens including during our knit and natter on a Friday morning, and even Dexter, who made a felt poppy, who is three years old."

THe store, at the last count, had 4,500 poppies, and managed to fit 2,500 in the window.

THe purple poppies are now raising money for the PDSA and the remainder which are being purchased are in aid of the British Legion, at the Chichester Assembly Rooms.

A stunning art display created from an army camouflage net, hand-crafted poppies and a ‘silent’ soldier silhouette have formed the centrepiece of Singleton CE Primary School’s Remembrance Day commemoration.

Pupils have been busy creating the poppies to put towards a huge display outside the front of the school in Charlton Road.

Christopher Todd said: “It’s important to us as a school to think about all those who have fought and died in war and what Remembrance means to us all.

"THe poppies that the children have created look absolutely fantastic, and they are all extremely proud of the work they have put into the display."

The lighting of the city's beacons

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk BEACONS were lit across the county on the evening of Sunday, November 11, to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. Tangmere Parish Council held a beacon lighting ceremony on the village playing fields and engineers from Tangmere Military Aviation Museum built a large brazier.

During the evening, the museum’s curatorial department ran an exhibition

on the centenary of the RAF and Tangmere aerodrome, including screening a tribute to four famous aviators of the Great War, Albert Ball, James McCudden, Mick Mannock and Baron von Richthofen (the Red Baron).

At 7pm, the beacon was lit by Major Grace Irvine-THompson, a serving officer with the Royal Military Police, who had been brought up in Tangmere and was educated at the Chichester High School for Girls.

Tangmere’s new vicar, the Rev Trevor Marshall, led the religious part of the ceremony and Tangmere Parish Coucnil chairman, Cllr

Andrew Irwin, unveiled a Silent Soldier in the form of a Royal Flying Corps airman.

THe Duke of Richmond also lit a beacon at 7pm on the Trundle at Goodwood in memory of those who died during the First World War. A procession of torch bearers carried torches along the southern rampart of the Iron-age hill fort, paying tribute to the 563 lives lost from Chichester, Lavant, Westhampnett, Singleton, East and West Dean.

THe beacons were two of 1,000 beacons lit across the country to mark 100 years since Armistice Day.

Cathedral holds a special service

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VISITORS to Chichester Cathedral attended an afternoon service on Sunday, November 11, to remember the great war.

THe Service of Remembrance and Reconciliation was attended by representatives of the armed forces, local civic dignitaries and people from across the county including Chichester's Mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, Chichester's MP, Mrs Gillian Keegan, the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, and the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Mrs Caroline Nicholls.

Together, they recalled the great sacrifice made by millions of soldiers and civilians during 1914-18, including many of the Royal Sussex Regiment, whose names are recorded on the walls

of St George’s Chapel in the cathedral.

THe Bishop of Chichester, the Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner, preached at this service, accompanied by readings, poetry, and music by the cathedral choir.

THe Very Reverend Stephen Waine, Dean of Chichester, said: “As we mark the centenary of the Armistice which ended the Great War, we are conscious of the huge cost of this conflict. Millions of soldiers and civilians lost their lives."

As a result of the national ‘Ringing Remembers’ campaign, 1,400 new bell ringers were recruited across the country in honour of the 1,400 bell ringers who lost their lives during the First World War. Chichester Cathedral has six of these new recruits who took part in an Armistice centenary ringing from 12.30pm-1.30pm, joining with bell ringers across the nation to mark this special occasion.

Afterwards, the cathedral’s bell ringers performed a quarter peal, a difficult form of ringing requiring precision and concentration, lasting about an hour. As the service ended and the congregation left the cathedral, the ringers played for a further 20 minutes.

In the evening, the bell ringers participated in ‘Battle’s Over – Ringing out for Peace!’, a national tribute to Armistice Day where more than 1,000 churches and cathedrals throughout Britain rang out simultaneously in celebration of the end of the First World War. Visitors to the cathedral were also able to see the stunning nine metre tall willow installation - a ‘Spire of Peace’, as featured in last week's Chichester Post.

THe sculpture was open for people to step inside and contribute their own personal pledge for peace.

Poppy train steams to stations across south EXCITED members of the public gathered at Bognor Regis railway station on Saturday to witness the Southeastern high speed Javelin Class 395 train.

Adorned in poppies, the locomotive was travelling from St Pancras to Portsmouth, raising funds for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

Tour operator UK Railtours have been running the Class 395 Javelin tours for five years and this year it featured the unit number 395018 in its new poppy livery.

THe train ran fast from St Pancras International to Ashford International, before heading up to Tonbridge and Redhill. THen it headed southbound through Gatwick Airport, Horsham, Arundel and on to Bognor Regis. THe tour then reversed back to Barnham before proceeding to Chichester, Havant and Portsmouth.

Kent Evenden, highspeed driver manager for Southeastern, said: “It went faultlessly, and this year we raised over £30,000 – well over our target of £25,000.

It means that over the five years that we

have organised the Poppy trains with UK Railtours, we will have raised over £125,000 for the Royal British Legion.

Even now, donations are still coming in.

“Many of the staff working the train

were volunteers – including from Southeastern and Govia THameslink Railway - which meant we were able to keep costs down and ensure that as much money as possible goes to charity.”

THE streets of Brighton will feature folk tales of the world for the 2019 Brighton Festival Children’s Parade next May. Schools from across the region will be allocated a folk tale from a selection, chosen to reflect the diversity of artists taking part in the festival.

THe stories will be studied and explored by teachers and pupils before being presented in costume, music and carnival structures by around 5,000 school children and community groups.

ARTIST Trudy Redfern will be opening her studio to the public.

Trudy, who made a full size driftwood horse to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War, will open her studio on Saturday, November 24, and Sunday, November 25, from 10am until 4pm.

Trudy has spent the last year creating her horse made entirely from driftwood collected from south coast beaches.

full-size driftwood horse-heads, alongside her recent equine and wildlife paintings.

She has a new body of work based on sketches done while on safari in Africa.

By Ruth Scammell ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk MADNESS fans are being invited to take a trip down memory lane as a popular tribute band prepare to perform in Bognor.

Badness will take to the stage at Riverside Caravan Centre on Friday, November 23.

Madness, known for hits such as Our House, It Must Be Love, Baggy Trousers and One Step Beyond, continue to attract fans from across the country and it is hoped Badness will be a big hit when they perform.

Roy Rosier is the complex manager at Riverside.

He said it was the first time they had hosted an event outside of the season, such as New Year's Eve. He said: "THis is our first one so we are hoping that this will take off and then we will continue to do a lot more.

"We are looking forward to it. We do hope that it will go down well so we can run an event like it again. Madness tribute acts do always seem to be very popular. THe tickets are selling well.

"It should be a good night bringing that

two tone style of music to Bognor - it always proves very popular."

Badness formed back in 1994 and have become one of the best tribute bands in the country, winning several times at THe National Tribute Awards.

Within six months of forming, they were selling out venues across the UK and Ireland. Originally a seven piece outfit, consisting of guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, trumpet, keyboards and vocals, they soon became six, with the front man and vocalist taking over on the trumpet.

Badness have also toured further afield, in countries including Germany and Spain, as well as Israel.

A LOCAL artist is exploring identity and immigration in a new exhibition.

Havant-based artist Agata Wojcieszkiewicz has a new, hard-hitting exhibition at THe Spring, located in the town.

She said: “Time, place and identity are important to me. I am an immigrant stuck in limbo between the past and present worlds.”

Having studied and gained traditional training in Poland before moving to England in 2011, Agata now lives and works from a studio at ‘Making Space’ in Havant.

THere, she created some of her recent works displayed in this exhibition that demonstrate her perceptive on contemporary Britain as a Polish immigrant.

Elements of Wojcieszkiewicz’s work are inspired by her time working as a cleaner at Queen Alexandra Hospital and also features Portsmouth, giving this exhibition an extremely local feel and makes the topic of immigration relevant for spectators from the borough.

Agata’s work will also be accompanied by her artist statement, giving the viewer an insight into her inspiration,

background and how she produces these creations.

Her work was last displayed at THe Spring earlier this year, when she won first place in the centre's Open Exhibition.

THe exhibition will be available for

Sunshine Wine will have you beaming with joy Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com THERE is a buzz around Chichester at the moment and, none more so than at Chichester Assembly Room, where last Saturday saw a sell-out crowd revel in nostalgia as Wish You Were Pink Floyd presented an impressive selection of their repertoire embellished by a superb laser show in the Georgian splendour of the historic venue.

Quant au vin, it could be argued that we all have a duty to co-operate, so naturally I sought out my local Co-operative store, based in Rose Green, to ascertain which wines I could purchase at a reduced rate and duly found offers valid until November 20.

For just £5.25, I was able to procure a South Eastern Australian 2017 Signal Post Chardonnay and observed notes of fresh peaches, tropical fruit flavours and a refreshing finish. THe four per cent Viognier in this wine makes all the difference and gives it added creaminess and at this price is well worth a punt!

For just £5.50, you might recognise the label of the next wine from far flung

Gran Canaria or mainland sunny Spain - namely a Torres Vina Sol, a wine that is just 56 years young and is indeed the Sunshine Wine.

Torres has a near monopoly in Spanish resorts and this is a classic holiday wine with a light fruity style and low alcohol making it ideal for summer parties.

It is made with parellada, a light apple and citrus flavoured grape which plays a key role in the blend for Cava, and is a crisp, unoaked wine and in fact a simple

apéritif with green apples and light hints of pineapple and citrus.

My final white selection was that of a 2017 Jacobs Creek Chardonnay for the lofty outlay of £5.85 proving to have tropical fruit aromas and flavours with a hint of green apple and a creamy tinge on the finish. It is neither complex, nor intense, but is an easy drinking wine with white stone fruit and a hint of light vanilla and would pair well with sweet and sour pork, salmon or tuna .

THis week I will employ some brevity discussing the following three red wines, starting with just £5 expended to obtain a 2018 Finca Las Moras Shiraz of Argentinian provenance.

Ripe, rich spicy red fruits permeate this bargain buy and there is little not to like - one you should try this weekend! My second red selection is on offer for £5.85 in the form of THe Interlude Pinot Noir of South Eastern Australian provenance. THis is a lighter red with earthy tones, a subtle

hint of spice, floral notes and hints of black cherry, marzipan and strawberries and is one worth allowing to breathe.

THis constitutes another great buy and one that would pair well with roast lamb and pulled pork! THe third red was a 2015 Fairtrade Malbec, part of the Co Op Irresistible range, from the Famatina Valley in Argentina and priced at £7.50.

Full-bodied and dry with concentrated fruit, this would ideally pair with a juicy steak - nos vemos màs tarde!

Method

INGREDIENTS • 2 celery sticks, thickly sliced • 1 onion, chopped • 2 really big carrots, halved lengthways then very chunkily sliced • 5 bay leaves • 2 thyme sprigs, 1 whole and 1 leaves picked • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 tbsp butter • 2 tbsp plain flour • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 beef stock cubes, crumbled • 850g stewing beef (featherblade or brisket works nicely), cut into nice large chunks

1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3 and put the kettle on.

2. Put 2 thickly sliced celery sticks, 1 chopped onion, 2 chunkily sliced carrots, 5 bay leaves and 1 whole thyme sprig in a flameproof casserole dish with 1 tbsp vegetable oil and 1 tbsp butter.

3. Soften for 10 mins, then stir in 2 tbsp plain flour until it doesn’t look dusty anymore, followed by 2 tbsp tomato purée, 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and

2 crumbled beef stock cubes.

4. Gradually stir in 600ml hot water, then tip in 850g stewing beef and bring to a gentle simmer.

5. Cover and put in the oven for 2hrs 30 mins, then uncover and cook for 30mins – 1hr more until the meat is really tender and the sauce is thickened.

6. Garnish with the picked leaves of the remaining thyme sprig.

INGREDIENTS For the filling: • 75g dates • zest 2 oranges, juice of 1 • 50g coconut oil • 175g clear honey • 140g raw cacao powder (find it in health food shops or online), plus extra for dusting For the crust: • 100g coconut oil • 140g ground almonds • 175g desiccated coconut • 2½ tbsp clear honey • 1 tbsp raw cacao powder

Chocolate orange tart

Method 1. Put the dates in a bowl, cover with boiling water and leave to soak for 20 mins. Meanwhile, whizz the ingredients for the crust in a food processor until combined. Tip the mixture into a 23cm loose- bottomed fluted tart tin, using your fingers to spread it evenly across the base and push into the fluted sides. Cover with cling film and chill while you make the filling.

2. Drain the dates and put in a blender with the zest and juice of 1 orange, the coconut oil, honey and cacao. Whizz together until mostly smooth, then scrape into the chilled crust and smooth with the back of a spoon. Chill for at least 1 hr. Remove from the fridge 10 mins before serving and sprinkle with the remaining orange zest and extra cacao.

HIV diagnosis is not a death sentence THIS week I am in Washington DC speaking at a women’s entrepreneurial conference. It's my first visit here, so I am very excited.

I am planing on running to THe White House from my hotel later today before the events start this evening. It may be that is all I will have time for, but I cannot possibly be in Washington and not see THe White House!

THe night before I left, I took my children to the cinema to watch Bohemian Rhapsody, which we all thought was completely amazing. If you haven't seen it yet, I would highly recommend going to watch it. It's such a moving portrayal of the life of Freddie Mercury (original name, Farrokh Bulsara) and his genius talent with the band Queen.

What I loved about the movie was that you gained a real sense of how unique and confident he was in his own abilities and talent. He believed in himself fully which I found utterly inspiring. Being a child born in the 1970s, I could relate to so many things in the movie, such as the music, Live Aid, Top of

the Pops etc.

If you were around then, you will also remember during the 1980s, that AIDS/HIV was a very feared disease that hit the headlines almost daily. When Freddie Mercury died from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS, it shocked the nation and we lost a true legend. THe sad thing is, if he contracted the disease now, it's more than likely it could have been treated.

For the past 30 years it’s been a terrifying spectre that’s hung over the world, killing an estimated 39 million people. All that is changing now. Infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, does not mean a death sentence anymore. In fact, most HIV positive people today who have access to modern medication are expected to live a normal lifespan.

in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During these early years it was often referred to as the 'gay cancer,' which is such horrible terminology. By late 1982, however, the more accurate term Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, was coined.

I only discovered today that one of the most striking developments in research was the functional curing of HIV in the 'Berlin Patient' who was born right here, in Washington. Timothy Ray Brown was diagnosed with HIV in 1995 and immediately began taking antiretroviral medication to suppress the virus.

In 2006, he was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent two bone marrow transplants in a Berlin hospital. His stem cell donors were known to have a resistance to HIV and after his treatment, he stopped antiretroviral therapy. Since then, his condition has remained stable and shows no sign of the virus in his system.

At the start of the epidemic, HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was truly terrifying.

Between 1988–1995, 78 per cent of people infected with the virus died from causes directly attributable to AIDS. THat number is staggering and was largely responsible for the idea that an infection was a death sentence.

However, by the time we get to the period between 2005 and 2009, that

number dropped to five per cent. Today, if a person with HIV begins antiretroviral medication early, they are expected to have a normal life span. Huge progress against one of the biggest killers of people living with AIDS has been made as the myriad of treatment advances, as well as widespread knowledge of the virus and how it’s transmitted has made the phrase 'the end of AIDS' a realistic goal. THis was considered unthinkable even a decade ago.

Lifesaving medication is still far too expensive to be accessible to the vast majority of the world population. We need to do a lot more to make sure that such treatments are available to all, if we are going to see the end of this epidemic, however, we could live to see an AIDSfree generation if money and research continues this way over the next few years.

Community News & Views Dear Editor, ‘Protecting Priory Park is Priory - ity’ might make a good headline, but it remains to be seen whether the district council really has the welfare at heart, either of the park or the many residents who live close by. THe licensing authority had little option after the drunken and disgraceful behaviour witnessed during the recent one day only October Fest, to refuse an alcohol licence for the similar (in its effect no doubt) Rum & Reggae event. THe real test of the council’s will though, will be the outcome of the applications for planning permission and (only slipped in later on) also permission for a licence to serve alcohol in the park coupled with live and recorded music, not just for one day, but all day from morning to night for 44 consecutive days!

If the authorities, absolutely rightly, refuse a one day only licence, what possible justification could they have, to immediately afterwards grant the same licence to someone else for more than six weeks?

Now it seems quite clear that the ice rink project, conjuring visions of happy families and children having a little harmless fun on the ice, was a thinly veiled disguise masking the main money-making purpose of the promoters, being to establish what can only be described as a gigantic pub in the park. THis is intended to run through the Christmas period and into new year, with two massive parties also applied for. Live and recorded rock/pop music, no doubt played at the usual high volume levels which has driven residents ‘mad’ already this year, will no doubt be the order of the day as well.

What is certain about all this, though, is that none of it has anything to do with a family ice rink! Ice skating and alcohol do not mix!

DOGS ARE wagging their tails to promote a local assistance dog charity’s fundraising campaign for THe Big Give Christmas Challenge at the end of November.

Canine Partners, a charity based near Midhurst, is promoting their ‘THe Big Wag’ campaign by inviting members of the public to share their pets' best wagging tails.

THe charity trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people living with disabilities across the UK, boosting their confidence and independence.

THe dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and retrieving items, opening doors and undressing a person. THey can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency.

THe Big Give Christmas Challenge is set to run from mid-day on Tuesday, November 27, to mid-day on Tuesday, December 4, with any donations made online through THe Big Give’s website being doubled until the charity reaches its fundraising target of £45,000, making a total of £90,000.

“THe fundraising total of £90,000 would provide vital funds to the charity and we are hoping it’ll bring us a step closer to reopening our waiting list by the end of 2019,” says Anne Yendell, director of fundraising.

“We also hope to further develop our in-house breeding programme, provide further training to our volunteer puppy parents and complete the kennel facilities at our Midlands training centre in Leicestershire.”

THe charity’s waiting list is currently closed due to an exceptionally high number of enquiries and a long waiting list, with the need to prioritise applicants currently on the waiting list as well as existing partners and their needs for successor dogs.

CHILDREN at the March CE Primary School in Chichester will have no problem being seen walking to school this winter - thanks to a generous donation from Barratt Homes.

With the arrival of the darker nights, the housebuilder has kitted out the school with hi-vis vests to help keep the children safe as they walk to and from school.

THe move is part of the company’s ongoing pledge to support the communities it works in, with the safety of residents being a number one priority.

Anthony Dimmick, Barratt Homes’ community liaison officer, said: “We know how important it is to encourage youngsters to get out and about, and we should all continue to stay active and get outside even in the winter months.

Dear Sirs Velo on Ice? Who would have believed that hot on the heels of the Velo South fiasco, which was a masterpiece of non-consultation and misinformation, another fiasco could emerge, this time in the form of a proposal for a Christmas ice rink in Priory Park.

Last month a planning application was made to provide this facility by a firm called S3K, but they put in the application in too late to allow it to be determined in time for their required site start date. Strangely, instead of insisting the application take its course, as would (and indeed should) be the normal practice, Chichester District Council bent over backwards to fast track its progress.

THe application was red-carded by a concerned councillor in the light of much public concern that Priory Park was an unsuitable location for such an event and, as part of the fast tracking, it went to planning committee 17 days before the public consultation period had expired, and before the critical input of Historic England had been received.

Not only that, the agenda papers were put together in advance before any public comments had been received, and also omitted the objection already submitted by THe Conservation Area Advisory Committee. THere were speakers at the planning committee meeting who raised significant doubts in the minds of members to the effect that the resultant motion, namely to delegate the decision to officers with a recommendation to permit subject to “no significant material considerations being raised through a third party”, split the vote, so it was only carried on the casting vote of the chairman who, as it happens, represents Southbourne, not Chichester.

Concerns about damage to the park’s grass and the underlying archaeology, the long hours of alcohol sale, noise from generators and chillers running 24 hours a day, nuisance from loud music being played seven days a week for six weeks and doubts about adequate event management were all played down by the council in its zeal to permit the scheme.

All very strange. However, all has since been explained: it has emerged that S3K are actually acting in partnership with the council and had been invited to tender for providing the facility back in July.

It has also emerged that they were the only ones to submit a tender and have seemingly little or no experience of operating an ice rink.

None of this was made public either on the planning portal or at the planning committee (there was no mention of it in the agenda papers) so one wonders how many of the planning committee were taken in by this use of smoke and mirrors. THe council was, in fact, granting itself planning permission for its own event.

PEOPLE around Chichester who need help with universal credit are to be helped in a new service.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice is to pilot the assistance to ensure those who are struggling to claim the benefit can claim their entitlement.

THe charity has been helping people at its help-points in Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton since universal credit was fully introduced to the area last July.

THe new service aims to offer them comprehensive and practical support they need to get paid on time and manage until their first payment.

THe pilot scheme - the Citizens Advice universal support service - was launched on Monday for help in person, over the phone and online. THis is well in advance of its national start next April.

Lucia Badioli, pictured above, chief officer of Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: "Problems with benefits is the top issue for which people come to us for help.

"For people receiving benefits, the roll-out of universal credit has brought challenges, such as delayed payments and a complicated application process.

"Our advisers are already helping people already struggling with the system. THe new funding to support people with their universal credit claim will help even more."

Chichester sailors of the First World War

By Pat Saunders, volunteer, and Amanda Rogan, learning officer, at the Novium Museum LAST WEEK'S article looked at some of the brave naval personnel from Chichester who took part in battles at sea during the First World War. THis article continues to tell their stories.

On June 6, 1916, HMS Hampshire was sunk with the loss of 737 lives. Secretary of State for War, Field Marshall Lord Kitchener, was on board, heading for a diplomatic mission in Russia. On leaving Scapa Flow, Scotland, the ship struck a mine and sank. Stoker 1st Class Harry Noel, Stoker 1st Class Charles Ayling and Able Seaman William Freeman were all killed. William Freeman had attended the Central Boys School and had been in the Navy for six years before he was killed, aged 23.

On October 27, 1916, HMS Nubian was torpedoed in the Dover Strait, killing many of those on board. Petty Officer Stoker James Rapson was one of those killed. He is buried in Chichester’s Portfield Cemetery.

Trimmer George Scutt was a member of the Royal Naval Reserves and served on HMS Evadne, a mine sweeping ship. He was killed, along with 11 others, in February, 1917, when the ship struck a mine in the English Channel.

When war was declared, there were more men in the Naval Reserves than required so many ended up fighting as infantry in the Royal Naval Division. Able Seaman Walter

George Willmer was one such person. He was killed at the Battle of Arras in 1917.

Shortly before midnight on July 9, 1917, at Scapa Flow, Scotland, HMS Vanguard suffered a series of explosions, causing her to sink, killing 843 of the 845 men aboard. One of those killed was Major Harry William Miles.

In January, 1918, HMS Opal, was out on patrol with her sister ship, HMS Narborough, looking for German ships that may have been laying mines around the Scottish coast.

Due to adverse weather conditions, both ships were ordered to return to Scapa Flow.

Unfortunately, both ships ran aground and all but one of the crew were killed, including Able Seaman Alfred Young from Chichester.

Shipwright 2nd Class Frank Rhodes was killed in September, 1918, aboard HMS Glatton. THe ship was in Dover Harbour when an explosion occurred, causing a large fire on board. In order to protect other vessels in the harbour, the ship was deliberately sunk. In 1930, the remains of 58 sailors from this ship, including Frank Rhodes, were interred to a single grave in Gillingham cemetery with full naval honours.

Stoker James Napoleon Timlick joined the Navy six months before the outbreak of war and started his career on HMS Victory in Portsmouth. After completing his training

he worked on HMS Attentive, which served mainly as a patrol vessel in Dover Harbour but was one of the first ships attacked through aerial bombing in September, 1915, when supporting a naval bombardment in Ostend, Belgium.

Two crew were killed and seven were injured. In 1917, James Timlick joined the Submarine Service, where he remained until 1928, before being discharged. He re-enlisted in 1929 and served during the Second World War, leaving the Navy for good in 1943.

Despite the Armistice in November, 1918, there were further casualties. Telegraphist Sidney John Bridle died in January, 1919, from bronchial pneumonia and influenza.

He had been on HMS Mersey stationed in the Mediterranean. At home in Chichester, Leading Stoker Charles May, who had served

on HMS Savage, died from the influenza. He is buried in Chichester’s Portfield Cemetery.

Leading Stoker Harry THomas Ayling drowned in an accident in July, 1920, while serving on the HMS Vampire.

More than 45,000 Royal Navy personnel were killed during the First World War. After the war ended, the naval authorities and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission were determined to commemorate the naval personnel who had no grave. THe Portsmouth War Memorial commemorates nearly 10,000 naval personnel of the First World War who were lost or buried at sea. Several men from Chichester are remembered on this memorial.

THe ProCeed has been designed, developed and engineered in Europe. A product of Kia’s European design, product development and R&D teams in Frankfurt, Germany, the ProCeed will be manufactured at the brand’s Žilina production facility in Slovakia. It will be built alongside the Kia Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon, first introduced earlier this year.

Matching the daring design and engineering which renders it the sportiest iteration of the new Ceed model family, the Kia ProCeed will be available exclusively as a ‘GT-Line’ or high-performance GT model and will be covered by Kia’s quality promise, with the brand’s industry-leading 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard.

Full UK specification, pricing and on-sale date will be announced in due course.

At 4,605 mm long, the ProCeed is 5 mm longer than the Ceed Sportswagon, with a longer 885 mm front overhang. At 1,422 mm in height, its roofline sits 43 mm lower than that of the Sportswagon, while ground clearance is reduced by 5 mm, to 135 mm. Constructed on the same ‘K2’ platform as other Ceed models, the 2,650 mm wheelbase remains unchanged.

THe rear of the car is what differentiates it

fully from other models in the Ceed range.

Combined with its lower overall height, the new wide rear bumper gives the car an assertive, sporty stance, with dual-tip exhausts for GT and ‘GT-Line’ models enhancing its sense of dynamism and sportiness.

From launch, the ProCeed will be available in a choice of 10 paint finishes. THe ProCeed ‘GT-Line’ will have 17- or 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels, while ProCeed GT models are fitted with 18-inch wheels as standard.

THe ProCeed diverges from other models in the Ceed family line-up with a series of changes designed to introduce a sportier ambience to the cabin. THe grey roof-liner of the Ceed and Sportswagon is replaced with black cloth to envelope and cocoon occupants, and the door sills feature metallic scuff plates.

THe ProCeed’s platform supports the car’s efficient packaging, creating ample space for occupants in the front and rear. For rear passengers, the lower hip-point (compared to Ceed and Sportswagon models) offsets the effects of the ProCeed’s lower roofline, creating head and leg room aplenty.

THe ProCeed offers more luggage capacity than many conventional compact family wagons – and even many tourers from classes

above. With a capacity of 594 litres (VDA), the ProCeed’s boot is 50 per cent more capacious than that of the Ceed five-door hatchback.

With no boot lip and a lower ride height than the Sportswagon, the low lift-over height of the shooting brake tailgate also makes it remarkably easy to load and unload.

THe Blues produced their best performance of the campaign a fortnight ago to smash London Cornish 29-12 in front of the Oaklands Park faithful.

With Paul Colley's injury hit side now having the benefit of a week off to rest up, second bottom Chi head to third bottom Chobham tomorrow (2.30pm).

Win and Blues could fly up the National One South table, potentially leapfrogging over six sides and into mid-table safety.

But victory would require Chi to end their poor away form which has seen them lose all four of their road trips so far this season.

Blues position towards the foot of the table is a surprising one.

THis time last year they were slugging it out at the summit, trading blows with three other sides in the fight for promotion into the National League.

But fast forward 12 months and Chi are looking nervously over their shoulder with only winless Hove between them and the foot of the table.

Colley's side probably do not deserve their lowly status. Injuries have hit the Oaklands Park side hard with a number of Colts and second team regulars being thrust into action into the first XV. A number of games have gone down to the wire. THree of their seven defeats so far have been by a score or less.

But after the win against Cornish last time out, Chi will be hoping that the corner has been turned and for the rest of the season Blues will only be looking upwards.

Bognor RFC will be looking to keep up the pressure on the sides at the top of Hampshire Premier as they head to old rivals Fareham Heathens tomorrow (TBC).

THe Purple and Greens are currently fourth in the standings after winning six of their eight matches so far.

With ten points separating them and undefeated leaders Basingstoke, Bognor know that nothing less than victory is required if they want to keep their title hopes alive.

THe Hampshire Avenue side have had a fortnight off after a planned cup match against Chipstead was postponed. Fareham, meanwhile, have lost their last three matches.

DARTS: Five players fired maximums in what was a week of high scoring in the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out Darts League.

CHICHESTER Runners put in a brave showing on what was a brilliant day’s racing for the first Sussex Cross Country League event of the season.

THe rain stayed away for the four hour duration of the racing at Brighton's Stanmer Park with organisers reporting record numbers in both the senior men’s and women’s race.

For the first time ever, more than 700 runners completed the seven League races plus the two Under 11 runs.

THe stand-out performance by those in the green and white shirts of Chichester came in the under 17s where Liam Dunne took his fine track form onto the mud.

Dunne was in contention all the way round but was edged into third spot with a time of 19 minutes 56, just behind Ethan Fincham (Team Synergy - 19:47) and Atticus Mohapi Dobouny (Lewes - 19:51).

With fellow Chi runner Ned Potter finishing sixth in 20:13 and Harry Sage in 26th (22:43),

the green and whites took third place overall in the team contest too.

THere was a good strong field of 230 in the senior men’s race which was convincingly won by Lewes’ county champion, Tom Evans.

He took control of the race before half distance and completed the course in 29:59.

James Baker was first home for Chi with his time of 31:25, good enough for tenth overall and fourth in the over 40s category.

But with the next home being Charles Rodmell in 37th (34:27) any hopes of a good team finish were ended, as Chi were ranked sixth out of eight in division one.

In the women's race, Alice Wright continued her fine form with an 11th place finish, stopping the clock at 22:47.

Even with Fay Cripps (23:36 - 24th), Alice Cox-Rustbridge (23:40 - 25th) and Jane Harrop (23:46 - 27th) finishing in close succession, Chi were ranked sixth in the eight team division.

Leaders Chi face a tough test with third-place Watford next

Lions need to cut out draws PAGHAM joint-manager Tom Simmonds is urging his side to start taking their chances after they chalked up their seventh league draw of the season.

Lions sit third in the SCFL Premier and remain the only unbeaten side in the division.

But fans of the Nyetimber Lane side have been left ruing their wasteful nature in front of goal as Pagham are five points off top spot.

It could be so much better for the Lions after they dropped four points in the last week, registering draws against mid-table Peacehaven & Telscombe and then away at bottom side Eastbourne United in midweek.

THose results mean Pagham have now drawn 50 per cent of their league games this season.

With struggling Hassocks visiting Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) their boss is urging his side to find their shooting boots.

Simmonds, who manages the side alongside Richie Hellen, said: "We are going OK. We are still unbeaten in the league and one of only four teams at our level in the country who can say that.

"But there's disappointment because we've had a few too

many draws so we're not where we perhaps should be.

"THere've been games where we've missed so many chances it's been unbelievable at times.

If we'd turned those draws into wins, we probably would be clear at the top."

Pagham had one of those days last weekend when, try as they might, they could not break down a spirited Peacehaven defence.

After taking an early lead through Daryl Wollers, the visitors equalised shortly after.

THen it was pretty much one way traffic - but despite hitting the bar four times in the second half, Pagham were unable to find the winner.

Simmonds said: "When that happens you are just thinking it will never come and it is just one of those days.

"But the same has happened against Arundel, Broadbridge Heath, Crawley Down - we need to put some of these chances away but we are not.

"I would be a lot more worried if we were not creating chances. We are still just a few points off the top.

"We don't want to be relying on others though, so we do need to start taking our chances."

TABLE-TOPPING Chichester City Ladies will need to hold their nerve as they face one of their toughest tests of the season so far.

Manager Aaron Smith has been overjoyed with the return from his squad so far as they have soared to the top of the National Southern Premier division.

THat lead was extended to five points last weekend with a 4-2 victory over bottom side C&K Basildon in front of a partisan crowd at Oaklands Park.

After falling behind, Cherelle Khassal, who was making her 50th appearance for the club, scored a 17-minute hat-trick to seal the win.

Next up for Chi, who have lost just once all season, is a trip to third place Watford on Sunday (2pm).

Smith said: “THe problem is when you’re top of the league everyone wants to beat you and this is the thing that we’re finding.

“People are turning up with a bit of a different mentality because we have predominantly kept under the radar all season as we’ve just gone about quietly doing our job.

“Now that we’re top, people will start to recognise that and come into games against us differently.”

Youthful Selsey soar to sixth

SELSEY boss Daren Pearce says he is pleased with the progress of his youthful side as they continue to push on up the table.

It was a summer of change at the Bunn Leisure Stadium as the former Sidlesham manager was appointed on a clear mandate of bringing on players through the ranks.

A dozen matches in and Blues are sitting sixth in SCFL Division One following a 4-1 away win at St Francis Rangers.

With struggling Oakwood visiting tomorrow (3pm) Pearce knows that his side are in prime position to keep on pushing on up the table.

He said: "We are only 12 games in but the lads are young, they are acquitting themselves well. THey are learning all the time.

"We have had a couple of disappointments but we have done really well in learning from what has happened.

"For a lot of them it is probably their first season at this level so overall I'm pleased."

Blues soared up the table after the comfortable away win last weekend.

wrapped up what became a comfortable win.

Pearce said: "You never want to underestimate a team, especially one who has just changed a manager and brought in a number of new players.

"You never know what you will get in that situation. THe pitch wasn’t great but we passed the ball really well and came away with a 4-1 win so I'm pleased."

He added: "It just shows you what a couple of wins can do. We have picked up some good draws against top sides in the last few weeks and that has helped us build confidence.

"We played really well away at [then league leaders] AFC Varndeanians and were unlucky to lose that one. It's just a case of when you play teams around you, that's when you need to pick up the wins."

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham will have a challenging match when they welcome fourth-place Alfold to the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Both sides were promoted from step six last season but find themselves at opposite ends of the table.

Sids drew 1-1 with Midhurst on Saturday before a 5-2 midweek loss to Oakwood.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham welcome Westfield to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm), looking to win only their third league match of the season.

THe Robins lost 2-1 to Copthorne last time out despite Alex Barnes giving them the lead.

Much to mull over for Chi's Rutherford CHICHESTER CITY boss Miles Rutherford will be looking for a reaction from his side after slipping from the top of the SCFL Premier for the first time in weeks.

A 3-2 defeat away at Newhaven last weekend has seen the Oaklands Park side replaced by Horsham YMCA at the summit.

Some midweek cheer was provided when a resounding 6-0 victory over SCFL Division One side Mile Oak sent Chi into the semi finals of the Peter Bentley Cup. But with City losing two of their last four, Rutherford will be looking for a reaction when they welcome mid-table Lancing to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

A key reason for the poor showing away at Newhaven was the absence of a number of

key players.

Dave Herbert and Kieran Hartley both began three match suspensions following red cards against Windsor in the FA Vase and Connor Cody and Gicu Iordache joined Dan Hegarty, Lorenzo Dolcetti and George Way on the injury list.

Chi made the worst possible start as the hosts went ahead within 30 seconds.

THe prolific Lee Robinson added a second for the Dockers before Josh Clack pulled one back for Chi. Robinson then added a third in the second half while Kaleem Haitham bagged a consolation with minutes left.

Chi bounced back on Tuesday thanks to goals from Scott Jones, Rob Hutchings (2), Ethan Anders, Sam Ndlovu and Clack.

Pearce: Rocks will be stronger for losses as poor run rolls on Next Game

WINGATE & F'LEY (H) Tomorrow (3pm)

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is hoping his young squad will be stronger as a result of two disappointing defeats in a week.

THe injury-hit Rocks fell to a 2-0 away loss to Walton Casuals in the FA Trophy before Corinthian Casuals performed a smash and grab 1-0 win at Nyewood Lane in midweek.

THe latter of those results left many of the Bognor faithful bemused as Pearce's side dominated a match but just could not take their chances.

THe defeats mean that Bognor have now not won a match in 90 minutes for more than a month in a run of eight matches.

With the Rocks now seventh in the Bostik Premier, a positive result against midtable Wingate & Finchley at the Nye Camp tomorrow (3pm) would be welcome relief for everyone involved with the club.

Speaking after the match, Pearce said: "Hopefully it will make us stronger. We are very disappointed with the result but the performance, especially in the first half, was fantastic.

"If we can create that many chances every week then I will be absolutely delighted "But the result is everything and it is about putting the ball in the net. At this moment in time it doesn't seem to matter who it is, who I change, who I bring in, whoever gets in those areas, it's just not happening.

"If it was a boxing match it would have been

stopped on points but football is not like that "You could see from the celebrations what it means to them. But it was a hard blow for us to take."

Rocks' poor run has coincided with an injury crisis at the club.

Defenders Keaton Wood and Corey Heath are both long-term absentees.

One player who should be back for the Wingate match is on-loan Portsmouth striker Brad Lethbridge, who made his full debut for the Fratton Park side against Tottenham under 23s on Tuesday.

With fellow front man Jimmy Muitt also returning to fitness, Rocks will be hoping they have the fire-power to end their poor run.

Pearce said: "It is a cruel game football and it is very cruel to us at the moment. But we have a very young team and all credit to them for the effort they are giving.

"I will not complain about the players.

Some of the final decisions perhaps you want more but I was genuinely delighted with the performance. We've had quite a few of those in the last weeks and at some stage something has to give."

THe match against Wingate will also be special for the family of Bill Spriggs, a longstanding Rocks fan who died recently.

His relatives will be at the match tomorrow with a minute's silence held before the game in his honour.

Pearce picks up Pompey aces WITH the Rocks injury list showing no sign of letting up, Bognor boss Jack Pearce has turned to League One side Portsmouth to bolster his ranks.

THis week, two more Pompey youngsters signed loan terms at Nyewood Lane, giving the Rocks boss further options in the centre of midfield.

THe signings of midfielder Leon Maloney, 17, and playmaker Freddie Read, 18, from the youth side at Fratton Park were confirmed on Tuesday, just a few hours before Bognor's midweek match.; Both made impressive debuts in the Rocks' disappointing 1-0 loss to Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday evening at Nyewood Lane.

THe additions of Reed and Maloney are the latest picked up by former Pompey coach Robbie Blake who is now patrolling the sidelines with Pearce at Bognor.

THey join frontmen Dan Smith and Brad Lethbridge, as well as centre half Joe Dandy, who is currently out injured after making a promising start in the heart of defence.

All three have remained in close contact with their parent club during their loan spells, returning for key matches and training sessions when called upon.

IT has been a very disappointing couple of weeks for all us Rocks fans.

I couldn’t make the Leatherhead game due to illness and was gutted not being there.

But like most who can’t make games, I listened in on Rocks Radio to find out how the team were doing.

We went two goals behind and had to battle back and with a late belter from Bradley Lethbridge were able to come through with a draw.

I managed to see the strike after it was shared on social media. What a cracker! Pick that one out of the net!

THen we were off to Walton Casuals in the following week as Seaford couldn’t field a team in midweek for our Sussex Senior Cup match at Nyewood Lane.

We, therefore, got a bye into the next round and will take on THree Bridges next at Nyewood Lane later on this month.

I have to say the Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub was very much like Haringey Borough’s ground, with one main stand and then all other areas uncovered.

How can I describe the football? It was one of the worst first halves of football I have seen us play.

Under the thunder and lightning, Bognor were indeed very frightening at the back.

Defensively we looked very tired and we gave the ball away countless times.

Deservedly, we went in at the break 2-0 down and we were lucky the Casuals didn’t net more.

THe closest we came to scoring in the first half was Tommy Scutt’s header off the post in the opening minutes!

THe second half was an improvement on the first, but really we never got any momentum going and at times were very lacklustre.

So we were tragically out of the FA Trophy and it was a miserable trip home in the

coach in the pouring rain. It didn’t stop did it?

Back in league action this past Tuesday night, Bognor welcomed Corinthian Casuals to Nyewood Lane.

I thought we dominated the game straight from kick off and passed the ball around well.

Without Lethbridge and Dan Smith, we managed to get Leon Maloney and Freddie Read from Pompey who played well in their debuts Freddie even notched the man of the match award.

Both brought some much needed creativity to our ranks - the only problem was we just couldn't take any of the chances that came our way!

We were all over the Corinthians but in the 87th minute a mistake at the back cost us and they celebrated like they had won the World Cup. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances and like many games this season, we paid for it. I think the tannoy music ‘THings Can Only Get Better’ was only too true following the final whistle here – a very frustrating evening.

And so the winless run continues...

Wining games at any level of football is hard enough.

But it seems like every season around this time of year Rocks go on a poor run where we just cannot seem to buy a result.

Injuries and other absences have their part to play.

But I think the biggest issue we have at the moment is a lack of confidence, particularly when we go forward. We just need a bit of luck and perhaps things will start to get better.

But, we move on, and it's Wingate & Finchley at home in the league tomorrow.

THis day is for Bill Spriggs, a long-time supporter who has recently passed away.

I hope the lads show what they can do against a physical side. Come on boys! Do this for Bill!
