Billy's wins planning permission on appeal

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A POPULAR café in Bracklesham Bay has won its battle to expand.

Billy's on the Beach has been given the go-ahead to extend the existing building to form an outdoor, enclosed seating area to the front of the building.

Chichester District Council rejected the plans for safety reasons but their decision has now been overturned on appeal.

THe proposal involves the relocation of the foreshore access route 4m further down. A new pedestrian crossing will be built.

THe original decision to reject the scheme came after it was deferred at a meeting in October, 2017, for a site visit and to address further worries raised by the foreshores officer.

Diagrams were shown in the council meeting in March to show the impact of the access on trailers and boats using the existing slipway through the change in access.

West Sussex County Council Highways outlined at that time that a 5.7m long car towing a 6m boat could navigate access onto the slipway.

Billy’s on the Beach operates as a small café sited on the seafront. THe premises form part of a larger single-storey building, which includes the council’s foreshore office to the north and public conveniences on the eastern side. THe site lies directly next to a public car park, with its gated vehicular access located to the south of the café.

THere is an existing pavement alongside the building in Bracklesham Lane, which wraps around the building to provide pedestrian access to the car park and the concrete apron which acts as a sea defence. THe area is also used to launch boats.

Planning permission was granted in 2016 for the creation of an outdoor

seating area to the appeal premises, and included the stationing of a catering trailer.

In the appeal documents, the inspector says: "THere is no objection from the council regarding the external appearance of the proposed decking and canopy, and there is no reason why I should take a different view on the matter. THe proposal would enable the use of this area all year round, and f The subsequently support the local economy and tourist industry.

Director of Billy's on the Beach, Christopher Fry said: "We are extremely pleased with this result. No certainty over A27 funding THE SUMMERSDALE A27 Action Group have claimed that Chancellor Philip Hammond’s decision to scrap private finance initiatives (PFIs and PF2s) in his recent budget has completely removed any certainty of funding for the ‘Mitigated Northern Route’ of the A27 at Chichester.

A spokesman for the group said: "THe public should be asking why members of West Sussex County Council played such a high stakes game of Russian roulette by rejecting

£250m of government investment in March, 2017, which would have made a major difference to Chichester for years to come.

"Instead, they continue to gamble with RIS2 funding which won’t even be known until the end of 2019 and nothing will be done in the interim."

THe group believes the application for funding a new road by the county council should be withdrawn and that Chichester should focus on upgrading the existing route.

A Chichester Psalms Gala Evening starts this evening (Friday), which will be followed by a special performance of Leonard Bernstein's choral masterpiece tomorrow, in a concert programme with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop and with the choirs of Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals.

American conductor and violinist, Marin Alsop said: "I am thrilled to reunite with the Bournemouth Symphony

Orchestra for this historical project celebrating my teacher and mentor, Leonard Bernstein.

"Performing Chichester Psalms in Chichester Cathedral is the perfect tribute to Bernstein. THis brilliant and very personal piece embodies his faith in humanity, innocence and youth."

THe gala evening will open with the acclaimed one-man play Walter & Lenny, devised and performed by Peter McEnery, based on THe Leonard Bernstein Letters. It traces the friendship of Dean Walter Hussey and Leonard Bernstein, the fruit of which was one of Bernstein's most frequently performed and popular works.

THen author and music critic Nigel

Simeone will welcome Alexander Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein's son, on stage.

Alexander last visited Chichester in July, 1965, with his father, mother and sister Jamie, to attend the first performance in the Cathedral of Chichester Psalms.

"Since we launched Bernstein in Chichester in March, attendance across all the events has been beyond our expectations," said festival coorganiser Edward Milward-Oliver. "We are indebted to the enthusiasm and generosity of so many participants and supporters, and a community keen to honour Leonard Bernstein's life and work.�

From page one "In the absence of a major Highways England scheme there is no alternative to making relatively minor at grade improvements to the existing A27.

"THis does not mean the council is embracing any of the Highways England 2016 options for the existing A27. It does mean the district council has to calculate the impact of the new housing that is planned and devise proposals to offset its impact on the whole highways network."

Part of the plans in the report includes prioritising the Fishbourne section of the A27 and creating a 'hamburger' roundabout.

THese resemble a typical roundabout but have signals and a straight-through section of carriageway for one of the major routes.

THe mitigation scheme would also mean that the Terminus Road arm is removed and would relocate to a new junction on Cathedral Way and add a new arm to the roundabout for the Stockbridge link road.

As reported in last week's Chichester Post, cabinet members from the council approved the new local plan, which includes provision of 12,350 new homes.

THe Peter Brett transport study looked at the impact development will have on the road network and suggested these new measures to

reduce this impact.

THe transport study also stated that the total cost for the full implementation of the proposed mitigation works would be around ÂŁ36.4m, which is almost half those which were calculated by Highways England for similar changes in 2016.

THe second junction to be prioritised is the Bognor Road roundabout which would see another 'hamburger' roundabout introduced and the removal of the Vinnetrow Road arm which would instead be relocated to a new junction on the A259 Bognor Road.

Other changes proposed would see the A27 Whyke roundabout converted into a traffic signal crossroad with dual-carriageway for the A27 and banned right turns from the A27 to B2145 Whyke Road.

THe Oving Road traffic lights would see a big change which was also agreed at a planning meeting in June of this year.

THe conditions on the Shopwhyke Lakes planning application were to achieve a staged but eventual closure of the existing traffic lights to all traffic with the exception of limited movements for buses, entering and crossing over the A27 carriageway from east (Oving Road) to west then travelling north along the A27 to the Portfield roundabout.

` Christmas tree CHICHESTER'S Rotary clubs have arranged a torch-light procession and carol singing at the Rotary Community Christmas Tree this year to celebrate the beginning of the festive season.

On Saturday, the Dean of Chichester will bless the tree and the Mayor of Chichester will switch on the magnificent brand new set of tree lights at 5pm.

Torchlight bearers will meet in Crane Street to form up by 4.15pm, ready to lead off into North Street towards the Cross. All are welcome to join in and take part.

THe Oakwood School Choir will sing carols at 4.30pm and the Chichester Community Choir will lead community carol singing and will be joined by members of the Chichester City Band.

THere are no fireworks this year and the main street festive lights are to be a 'soft launch' earlier in the afternoon.

Star of Bethlehem lights up cathedral

THe ethereal star is created using two laser projectors, set high up in the cathedral’s roof, directing light onto a large transparent mesh to form the image.

THe Star of Bethlehem appears as a morphing geometric shape, moving slowly and gracefully across the space.

Visitors to the cathedral can interact with the artwork by operating an iPad to change the star’s appearance and colour.

As part of the installation, a haze machine, also set up high in the cathedral, expels a fine mist, picking up the laser light and transforming it into a dazzling three-dimensional image.

Excited by the installation, 32 year old Jayson said: “Somewhere like Chichester Cathedral is amazing, as it’s such an interesting space. I like to connect the past to contemporary technology, taking an ancient story or symbol and transforming it using modern techniques.

"THe mesh screen picks up the hologram-like image created by the projectors, but then the light keeps on travelling through it and beyond, making fascinating patterns on the nave walls of the cathedral.”

THe image is created by a computer algorithm code written by Haebich and transmitted via the iPad to the projectors. Visitors are able to influence the image by drawing onto the iPad with their finger.

“It’s super easy to use the equipment”,

says Jayson.

“Just touch the screen and then you can start to alter the image or change its colour.”

Supporting events include a Chichester Starlight Trail and opportunities for the public to meet Jayson, both taking place on THursday, November 29, between 4pm and 8pm.

After a career in creating graphics and lighting displays for clubs and festivals in Australia, Jayson, from Adelaide, moved to London six years ago to study a Masters in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths University.

Since then, Jayson has exhibited in galleries and institutions across Europe, Australia and China. Jayson’s next commission will see him creating a laser installation for a Shanghai art gallery in February, 2019.

Christmas arrives in the city with lighting of the bottle tree

THe West Sussex recycled bottle tree has visited Crawley, Horsham and Bognor Regis, and has now made its home for winter by coming to Chichester.

THe tree will be on display outside Jack Wills, in North Street, until Friday, January 4.

To celebrate the tree’s arrival, the West Sussex Waste Partnership, Chichester District Council, Chichester BID and Jack Wills hosted a switch-on ceremony with the mayor of Chichester, Cllr Martyn Bell, and the mayoress, Mrs Toom Bell.

THey were also joined by the Prebendal Choir who treated onlookers to some traditional Christmas carols and the Waste Prevention Team were on hand to answer any recycling queries and offer advice on how to reduce using singleuse plastics.

Head of THe Prebendal School, Louise Salmond Smith, said: “We were delighted to be invited to get involved at the switch-on for the beautiful recycled bottle Christmas tree in the centre of Chichester.

"THe message of recycling, especially at Christmas time, is a really important one and this is a wonderful way to

highlight that. THe children in our Chamber Choir who sang around the tree really enjoyed getting into the festive spirit too!”

THe tree sculpture is made from 600 reused green plastic bottles and is the brainchild of Tracey Graham, known as the ‘Rubbish Artist’, to help highlight plastic recycling in West Sussex.

Mr Bell said: "I am delighted to see the tree coming to Chichester. It's unique and has a unique message about recycling.

"It really is just superb and with a relevant message, especially here in West Sussex where can recycle things other counties can't. ""It looks fabulous, it's a fantastic sculpture and especially when it's all lit up in the dark."

On THursday, November 8, in St Pancras, Chichester, an attempted burglary was reported while the occupants were on holiday. Entry was via a forced window but the suspects decamped after the alarm activated. Serial 0006 08/11.

A vehicle was broken into in a car park in Warren Farm Lane, Chichester, on THursday, November 8. A handbag was stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0472 08/11.

In Douglas Martin Road, Chichester, on Friday, November 9, an attempt shed break-in was reported. No entry was gained. Serial 0328 9/11.

Rotary club comes up with a pants idea to help those in need in city THE ROTARY Club of Chichester Harbour is calling on the public to help donate pairs of knickers!

For more than 20 years the club has been collaborating with the local support agencies and other charities to help those families most in need, especially those escaping domestic violence in the local area.

Over the years they have seen the need to help rise sharply and now attend the foodbank in Chichester to give out clothing alongside the food packages provided.

Publicity officer Glyn Brown said: "As a club, we are always on the lookout for donations of pre-loved clothes, household items and small

items of furniture that we can recirculate to those in need.

"At the moment, we have a good supply of general clothing but we are desperately short of knickers! Any shape, size or gender are needed now but these need to be new."

THe club are holding two knicker collecting days in the city. Glyn continues: "If you can’t make it to one of these events but want to help us please contact us on 07479667486."

Creating and executing effective window displays formed a key part of the training and businesses are now being encouraged to put these skills to the test by entering the Christmas window display competition, being run by trainers Sally and Jason.

THe competition is open to all businesses that completed the retail training programme and will be entered under one of the following categories: product-based businesses in Petworth and Midhurst, product-based businesses in Selsey and East Wittering, productbased businesses in Chichester and service-based businesses across all five locations.

Entries will be judged on a range of criteria including how the products are displayed, use of space, props and graphics within the display and overall appearance of the shopfront.

Judging will take place in early December and a winner will be chosen from each of the four categories. Winners will each receive a bottle of fizz to celebrate their success.

Over 40 independent retailers in Chichester, Midhurst, Petworth, Selsey and East Wittering took part in the retail training programme organised

Speaking out as Chichester's most talkative festival arrives VISITORS gathered at the Assembly Rooms in Chichester on Friday and Saturday to listen to authors retail snippets from their books.

Mark Austin, former ITV newscaster and the current US correspondent for Sky News, gave audiences the stories behind his 30 years of reporting for ITN from the world’s hotspots.

Gregory Claeys, pictured above, talked about his book, Marx and Marxism. Gregory, one of Britain's leading historians of socialism, considers Marx's ideas and their development through the Russian Revolution to the present, showing why Marx and Marxism still matter.

Why was Marx so successful as a thinker? Did he have a system and if so, what does it consist of? How did Marxism develop in the 20th century and what does it mean today? He remains one of the most influential and controversial political thinkers

in history.

Gregory Claeys is Professor of History at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a leading historian of socialism and utopianism. He is the author of several books, including Searching for Utopia, which has been acclaimed as 'magnificent' by the Times Higher Education.

Co-organiser Marc Rattray said: "We had another successful festival in Chichester. We have been running them since the beginning of 2016 and it was gratifying to see so many of our customers return and also to see new faces.

` New apprentice CHICHESTER Harbour Conservancy has welcomed its first apprentice to the team.

Tristan Brougham has joined the conservancy's team of countryside rangers on an 18-month scheme which runs until March, 2020.

Tristan will hold the position of apprentice ranger, working with the permanent team to understand, survey, monitor and report on Chichester Harbour and its habitats.

Tristan will develop a number of key responsibilities during his apprenticeship including countryside management, footpath management and hedge laying.

He will be on site in Chichester Harbour for four days a week, and will spend the other day at Sparsholt College studying environmental conservation.

Tristan holds a degree in geology and has spent a number of years volunteering for environmental projects in his home county of Cornwall.

Maria Court, shared services manager, said: "We are delighted to have initiated this first apprenticeship.

"It is important to us that we help encourage the next generation of countryside rangers, and help those with an interest in conservation to develop a solid understanding of the challenges of our protected areas.

Movember mayor is tash-tastic idea to improve men's health

Cllr Martyn Bell started growing a moustache at the beginning of November and despite not being personally sponsored he wanted to

publicise the screening and health checks available for men which many do not take advantage of.

He said: "I saw Richard Madley on Good Morning Britain talking about it on November 1, and I thought I should get involved as I am a survivor.

"THe problem is that men are reluctant to get tested or talk about things. I did this to help create the conversation."

THe mayor was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010 through routine screening and because it was spotted early he is still here today. Cllr Bell had an operation in February, 2011, which took around six hours."

THe mayor has grown fond of his moustache. He said: "I like it! I chose the shape because, as we celebrate 100 years since the end of the First World War, my grandfather who was in the World War One Medical Corps had a moustache just like this shape, so it's a tribute to him.

"My wife, the mayoress, is very pleased I'm doing this but she is looking forward to it coming off!"

THe Movember Foundation is a charity changing the face of men’s health. THey address some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.

In 15 years they have funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world. By 2030 they say they will reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25 per cent.



Developing the most picture perfect exhibition to focus on city's treasures

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE LATEST exhibition at the Novium Museum is opening tomorrow, celebrating 125 years since THe Chichester Photographic Society was formed in 1893.

Chichester Camera Club: A Celebration of People and Places will feature the rich history of Chichester Camera Club and its development over the years.

Drawing from the club’s archives, THe Novium Museum’s social history photography collection and contemporary work, this showcase will also explore the way in which the district has been a source of inspiration to club members across a range of photographic genres.

THe Chichester Photographic Society was formed in 1893 and active until 1945 and then after a four-year break, was re-formed in 1949 under the name of Chichester Camera Club.

It has continued as such to the present day and is recognised as one of the most successful camera clubs in the country, welcoming everyone with an interest in photography.

Novium Museum manager, Stephanie THorndyke, said: "We are thrilled to work with the Chichester Camera Club to put

A very varied exhibition has come together featuring work from the camera club's archive – including lantern slides from the early days of the club.

As well as a section of contemporary work, a large part of the exhibition contains photographs drawn from across the Chichester district area that show activities, the people and the geography of this diverse area.

Club members have been submitting their images for a while to get the collection together, many drawn from their back catalogues, such as Dave Abbott’s late 1980’s image, for this part of the exhibition.

THe wider district community is also being called upon to become part of the exhibition by submitting their own digital photos for inclusion.

THe scheme provides quick and easy transport for residents and visitors in the city centre to make Christmas shopping a breeze.

Students' help for homeless MORE than a ton of food has been donated to homeless people around Chichester and Bognor Regis.

Kind-hearted students at THe Regis School in Bognor Regis and their families and tutors donated the mountain of meals and toiletries for Stonepillow.

THe Food Drive charitable effort will boost its work with homeless people around the area.

Driver Steve Heath said it was the most food he had picked up for the charity.

"THe amount of food that has been collected is amazing. We really appreciate it. THis food will be split up between our hubs in Chichester and Bognor Regis and will then be sorted to go to our lodges and night shelters," he said.

THe collection on Friday was the first time since it was started by the Westloats School some five years ago it had carried out the collection on its own rather than also involving its family of feeder schools.

School counsellor Kev Robbins said it had been a success. THe 1,215kgs - or 1.215 tons - was believed to be the most which had been donated.

"We do this because we are a Unicef rights respecting school and it is one of the ways in which we can take action for the community. It has been an absolutely fantastic result. THe quality of the produce is really good as well. All of the 1,550 students took part and this has been an exceptional response from them."

was seen in a national poll of young people as one of their biggest concerns.

Some 30 of the school's rights respecting ambassadors sorted the donations into categories. THey included Chris Gilbert, 11, Poppy Wallis, 14, Phoebe Reeves, 13, and Johan Keijser-Petch, 16.

Phoebe said: "A lot of baked beans have been donated, along with soup and quite a lot of pasta. THose foods will last for quite a long time and that will help more people.

"All the students brought food in for their tutor groups and the tutors doubled the amount."

Johan said: "THis has been an exhausting day but, mostly, it has been rewarding. We know this food is going to people who need it more than us.

"I've given stuff to homeless people and seeing the joy on their faces is absolutely unreal. To know that every single person who gets this food will feel it make the effort worthwhile.

Poppy said: "THis is about helping people with the things they need."

Chris said: "We know there are people who are not as lucky as us."

Mike Garlick, the school's principal, said: "I am proud of our students for bringing in a significant amount of food. We staged an education programme in the week leading up to today so they understand why they are doing this and the reasons why people can become homeless."

THe Food Drive formed part of the school's activities with the WE movement to empower change. A non-uniform day was also held at the same time.

FINANCIAL services staff swopped pounds for paint when they helped a charity near Fontwell.

Employees of the Nationwide Building Society spent time helping to re-decorate old offices of the Aldingbourne Trust.

THey grabbed their paint brushes and brightened up the rooms ready to be used again.

Sian Burchell, who organised the team from the building society in Chichester, said: "We had a fab day.

Our thanks to the trust for having us and they'll be seeing us next year."

Aldingbourne Trust helps people with learning disabilities and/or autism to have the same chances as everyone else to live independent lives.

Its staff welcomed the Nationwide team, pictured below, who wanted to volunteer their time and hands to make a difference to the trust.

THe building which benefited from their efforts was used by the trust before its new main building opened last summer.

THe latest facilities enable those it supports to enjoy more quiet rooms, a bigger games room and a training kitchen.

Green-fingered pupils will transform garden

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PLOT of land at Chichester's hosiptal is set to be transformed by local horticulture students.

THe students, who are studying at Brinsbury - part of the Chichester College Group - are designing and building a beautiful, peaceful garden with a seaside theme to improve the surrounding environment for patients receiving treatment for cancer at St Richard's Hospital.

THe garden will be located behind the Ford ward - currently home to a small courtyard and some potted plants.

Steve Millam, a horticulture lecturer at Brinsbury, has championed the project, first proposed a year ago.

He said: "THis is a fantastic opportunity for our students to really make a difference to a lot of people's lives - as well as be able to work on a real design project themselves.

"It has taken a little time to raise the money we needed to be able to create something special, but thanks to the generosity of those who have donated we

will soon be able to start work.

"THe students will present their design ideas to the staff at the hospital, and then we'll be underway.

"It is a small space, but there is a huge amount of potential. We want to bring in lots of colour, and create a happy environment for patients and their families to enjoy."

Claire Ballantyne, haematology clinical nurse specialist for the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added: “We are very excited that the courtyard garden area will be revamped by such a talented bunch of garden designers - we can’t wait to see the results.

“It’s really important for our cancer patients, who are well enough, to be able to access the outdoor area. THey are often in hospital for long periods undergoing chemotherapy treatments and it will be wonderful when they have somewhere appropriate to go to get fresh air.”

THrough the efforts of kind-hearted staff, patients and visitors to St Richards', around £500 has been raised for the garden.

Steve said: We would welcome any donations, whether that's plants, vouchers or even cash towards buying materials for the garden.

“In keeping with the seaside theme, we’re also on the lookout for a small wooden boat which could be used in the garden.”

Thousands raised for cancer charity OVER £2,000 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support earlier this month, thanks to an annual charity concert held at the Fishbourne Centre.

THe money was given in exchange for tickets to the concerts and raffle tickets and came to £2,240. Santander added £500 as part of their community involvement programme.

Elizabeth Dickson, personal banker at Santander’s Chichester branch, said: "We are delighted to have supported Ronnie and Sally at the fantastic charity concert in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. We were so impressed by

the local community coming together for the event and we are proud to have been involved both on the day and contributing as part of Santander’s matched donation scheme."

Volunteer for Macmillan Cancer Support and co-organiser, Ronnie Williamson, said: "What a cracking turnout on a dreadful wet night to support Sally and I in raising money at our charity concert in the Fishbourne Centre. Our fourth and best year yet. All we can say is thank you all - performers, helpers, raffle prize donors, THe Fishbourne Centre team and Santander."

Right royal party is enjoyed CUPPAS and chats were enjoyed by royal command at a Bognor Regis party.

Some 50 people came together to take part in a community event to celebrate the Prince of Wales' 70th birthday.

Tiaras were worn for the occasion by friends Diane Smith and Julie Insull.

Julie, 83, of West Meads, said: "I thought we should enter into the spirit of the occasion.

Diane, 73, of Pagham, said: "I've got my pearls on as well. I'm sure the Queen would appreciate that, or at least the Queen Mother would have done. THis is a nice event and it's much better than sitting at home."

THe tea party was arranged by the Rev Tim Crook, of St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street, South Bersted, and held in its adjoining hall last Wednesday.

Mr Crook said: "It is a national initiative by

the Duchess of Cornwall who felt that, despite the wonders of modern technology, there is nothing better than sitting down and having a chat over a cup of tea.

"She wanted people to hold a tea party to celebrate those in their 70s who have contributed to their communities. It is a simple event because it was not about holding a complicated occasion."

Not everyone at the party was that age but those who went along enjoyed the chance to brighten an autumn afternoon with a birthday tea party. Music on the piano was provided by Pat Alderton. Alan Jackson led the singing.

A special birthday cake was made for the occasion. Sally Beale had the privilege of performing the cutting because she celebrated her 70th birthday the day before the party.

` Long service workers TWO EMPLOYEES at Covers in Chichester have celebrated a combined 70 years of service.

Simon Willers and Colin Taylor have served 40 years and 30 years respectively at the timber and builders’ merchant on Quarry Lane.

THey were each presented with a gift for their loyalty and commitment by Covers chairman Rupert Green.

He said: “Both Simon and Colin are shining examples of the calibre of staff here at Covers. I am delighted to be sharing this special milestone with them and rewarding them for their commitment to the company.”

Simon Willers, who is a general counter assistant in Chichester, added: “I have spent 40 very happy years here at Covers and have made some great friends along the way.

"I love what I do and much of that is down to the fantastic team I have around me.”

SALT BINS are being topped up in West Sussex communities as the county enters the final stages of winter preparations.

In addition to the county council gritting major routes, salt provided by West Sussex Highways helps towns, parishes and other communities keep the county moving if ice and snow cover local roads and pavements.

Roger Elkins, county council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “THe process starts in the spring when parishes check salt levels in their bins in preparation for the winter.

"Now, at this later stage, we are just topping up to make sure they have enough salt."

Women continue their campaign in London

Award for Rachel A SENIOR customer services advisor at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital has recently won the Great Conversations for Service award, for outstanding customer service to patients.

Rachel Baldwin joined Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital over 20 years ago, initially as a receptionist, before being asked to lead the hospital’s patient appointment bookings department.

More recently, and because of exceptional knowledge and experience gained at the hospital, Rachel has been promoted to the role of senior customer services advisor with overall responsibility for managing all patient enquiries as well as supporting public events.

Rachel said: “I am delighted to win this award. Here at Chichester we take

great care to assist and support our patients. I know that I speak for the entire hospital team when I say that a positive customer experience for all our valued patients is our top priority.”

THe Great Conversations for Service award is given to one staff member from each of the four Nuffield Health regions and is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated consistent and exceptional professionalism and patient support over an extended period.

Hospital director John Bruell said: “We are very proud of the work Rachel does here at Chichester and it is wonderful that this has been recognised in this way.

"Rachel is a great asset to our team and is enormously helpful in sharing her skills and experience with colleagues.”

CAMPAIGNING women travelled to London yesterday (THursday) to take part in a rally coinciding with the Scottish National Party debate.

Members of Bognor & Chichester’s Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) covers Chichester, Bognor, Littlehampton, Rustington, Worthing and now the A24 corridor, including Horsham and villages, Crawley and MidSussex.

THe women went to Westminster Hall to take part in the rally over "state pension equalisation for women born in the 1950s".

Group co-ordinator Jill Robertson said: "On November 6, 2018, men and women's state pension ages were the same for the very first time since the state pension was introduced. We do not object to that.

"However, women born in the 1950s have not had equality in other areas of life, and the way state pension age changes have been introduced has left a whole generation at a further financial disadvantage.

"We are grateful to Patricia Gibson MP for securing this debate and keeping the issue in the parliamentary spotlight. We urge all MPs in the West Sussex region to attend."

In her application to the Backbench Business Committee for the debate,

Patricia Gibson said: "THe UK Government has repeatedly ignored the pleas of these women who continue to conduct their campaign for pension justice with fairness and dignity. As MPs, it is important that we show these women we support their cause and will continue to be their voice in Parliament.

THese women are not going away, and nor should they. We need to keep this

issue on the agenda and my debate on the WASPI women on November 22 will help to do that."

Ruth Jones returns to the Chichester stage

The Nightingales, Wed, Nov 27 - Sat, Dec 1, Chichester Festival Theatre BAFTA award-winning television star and writer Ruth Jones makes her highly anticipated return to the stage in THe Nightingales.

THe Nightingales is a thought-provoking, bittersweet play which follows the lives of a small community acapella group in their weekly singing practice, and the impact of new arrival, Maggie.

Under the watchful eye of Steven, their

choirmaster, Connie, Ben, Diane and Bruno gather every week in the village hall to practise their accomplished acapella singing.

THey are a motley crew, but whatever their differences, whatever the problems they may have at home, they all are happily bound together in their shared love of music.

Until one day Maggie knocks on the door. Soon, she is urging them to enter Talentfest, a potentially life-changing route to Britain’s Got Talent. In the weeks that follow, loyalties will be tested, tempers will fray and lives will indeed be changed - but not in the way that any of them had quite anticipated.

Ruth Jones (Maggie) is best known for playing Nessa in the BBC’s multi award-winning Gavin and Stacey which she co-wrote and created with James Corden. She also took the title role in Sky 1’s Stella, made by her own company, Tidy Productions, which ran for six seasons.

BINGSTERS fans will be in their element as Bing and his friends prepare for their first ever tour.

Bing Live! will visit the Kings THeatre, Portsmouth, this weekend for four performances only as part of a major UK tour through to April, 2019.

Join the CBeebies favourites Bing, Sula, Coco and Pando as they learn how to tell stories by pretending, dressing-up and singing songs. Bing Live! is produced

by Minor Entertainment (In the Night Garden Live) and directed by Will Tuckett, guest principal character artist of the Royal Ballet, whose production of Wind in the Willows won an Olivier Award for best entertainment in 2014.

Bing Live is adapted for the stage by Helen Eastman with costumes and puppet design by Tahra Zafar. As head of costume, hair and make-up for the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies staged in London, 2012, Tahra managed the production of 23,000 costumes for all four ceremonies.

By Martin Lury martin.lury@me.com ENTERING the realm of a Majestic Wine Warehouse is delectably reminiscent of those halcyon days in the sixties when we used to gaze in wonder at the assortment of mouth-wateringly large sweet jars adorning the local confectionery store.

Off I duly headed to Majestic Chichester in the knowledge that, just like in the old sweet shops, one can sample some of the wares. Wine guru Harry and I, pictured above, began this arduous task with due relish to select three white wines for you.

THe first choice for circa £7 was a 2017 Hacienda Lopez De Haro white Rioja with dates and banana on the bouquet which proved to be complex, fresh and expressive.

Our next selection was that of a Grande Réserve 2017 Domaine Saint Jean De La Cavalerie Chardonnay, priced at £7.99, and a wine produced by winemaker David

Alcaraz, whose deft touch reaches out to night-harvesting the grapes for freshness and subtle use of oak to flesh out the Chardonnay.

THis southern French gem is a newer style, but generous Chardonnay which is aromatic with white flower and light citrus with apricot and peach flavours to the fore, light oak and a touch of wood and culminating in a light vanilla finish and would go well with a plate of whelks.

At this juncture, it is opportune to remind you all prices quoted are part of

the mix six bottles offer.

THe final white selection was Harry's recommendation of a 2017 Sicilian Regaleali Case Vecchie, which is a blend of three Sicilian grapes, namely Inzolia, Catarratto and Grecanico, with some Chardonnay on sale for £8.99.

Cool-fermented in stainless steel, this refreshing wine has aromas of green apples plus undertones of pears and grapefruit and is an ideal apéritif that could pair well with antipasti, Asian cuisine, fish , shellfish or even pizza!

Averting my attention to three red wines, I happened upon a 2016 Château Recougne Bordeaux Supérieur - 2016 wines from this region are characterised by energy and a purity of fruit.

Fruit forward with a red cherry and blackberry nose and oozing ripe black fruit with hints of mocha and toast, this is a pure and fresh style of this wine with concentration and energy and a complex earthiness for circa £8.

Next for just under £10, I opted for a 2016 Passimento red hailing from the

practice of appassimento which involves the grapes losing about 30 per cent of their water content and thus concentrating the juice and intensifying the wine’s flavour.

THis is a barnstormer of a wine with hints of leather and spice and strong tannins!

My ultimate selection on offer for £13.99 was a 2014 Château Tour Bayard Montagne-Saint-Émilion with strong tannins which mellow when aired. Rich and soft blackcurrant fruit, earthy notes, spicy wood flavours, good structure and ample acidity permeate this fine wine.

Main dish of the week Sweet potato and chickpea curry Ingredients: • 1 tbsp oil • 1 tbsp cumin seeds • 1 onion, finely sliced • Salt and black pepper • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • ½-1 tsp chilli flakes (to taste) • 50g/1¾oz root ginger, peeled and grated • 600g/1lb 5oz tinned chickpeas (undrained weight) • 1 x 400g/14oz tin tomatoes • 750g/1lb 10oz sweet potato, peeled and cut into bite-sized cubes • 200g/7oz rice

Dessert of the week Autumn apple roses Ingredients: • 1 large red apple, cored and thinly sliced • 4 tablespoons caster sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 sheet puff pastry • 50g melted butter • 1 egg • 2 teaspoons water • 1 teaspoon icing sugar (optional)

Method: 1. Heat a large saucepan over a medium heat and add the oil. Once hot, add the cumin seeds and fry for a minute, or until aromatic. Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook for 5-6 minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent. Add the garlic, chilli flakes and ginger and fry for a further three minutes.

2. Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Add to the pan with the tomatoes and sweet potato.

Add enough water (approximately 500ml/18fl oz) to cover the chickpeas and sweet potatoes and bring to a simmer, stirring to mix everything together.

3. Cover with a lid and simmer over a medium low heat, stirring now and again, for 25-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are soft and beginning to

4. Meanwhile, cook the rice according to the packet instructions.

5. Taste the curry and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve immediately with the rice.

4. Spread melted butter over the pastry; top with a generous amount of cinnamon-sugar. Place apple slices along 1 long edge of pastry, about 5mm beyond edge of pastry, overlapping slices slightly. Fold bottom half of pastry over the apple slices to form a long "folder" of dough with rounded edges of apple slices exposed.

5. Beat egg and water together in a bowl. Brush surface of pastry with egg wash. Sprinkle with more cinnamon-sugar, to taste.

6. Starting from one end, roll pastry not too tightly to form a rose-shape. Seal roll with end of pastry strip.

2. Place apple slices on a plate, overlapping slightly if necessary. Microwave on High about 45 seconds just until slices have softened a bit. Cover the plate with cling film and a kitchen towel.

7. Transfer roses to prepared ramekins. Sprinkle with a little more cinnamon-sugar. Place ramekins directly on middle rack of preheated oven.

3. Mix caster sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

Roll the puff pastry sheet to less than 3mm thickness. Using a pizza cutter, cut two 7cm x 30cm rectangles. Reserve remaining pieces for another use.

8. Bake until well browned, about 45 minutes.

Remove ramekins with tongs and place on baking tray to cool 5 to 10 minutes. Remove apple roses from ramekins and finish cooling on rack. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

Focus can help to be strong in a crisis IF YOU read my column last week, you will know that I have been in Washington DC delivering talks for an incredible empowering event called the #WEC18 Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference 2018.

It was amazingly uplifting for everyone who attended, and I was truly honoured to be asked to join them. THe speakers were all very different, from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but all so interesting. What I found the most moving, was when I spoke to people in the audience after I had given my talk.

It was then I began to realise how inspiring it is to hear of everyone's struggles and hardships to get to where they are, and when you share your struggles and successes it gives people hope.

When I give a talk, I try to deliver from a very authentic place and speak directly from my heart. THis way I think people can connect with you better, and are more likely to share their own experiences.

THere was one particular woman who was running a very successful business, but at the age of 11 her entire family had been wiped out in a plane crash. She was meant to be joining them a day later in Hawaii. I am not talking one or two members, but her mother, father and brother. She had one remaining brother, who also died two years later.

It blew my mind that anyone could recover from such tragedy, but in fact when I asked her how she has tried to move on she stated ‘you never get over’ such an incident, you just learn to live with your situation. She told me that she

drew strength from the overwhelming feelings of being alone in this world.

It was from her inner strength that she started to form her company. She had no money, was appointed to live with her neighbours after her older brother passed away, (she disliked the neighbours immensely) and thought the only way out, to give herself financial and emotional freedom, was to strive to make her own life exceedingly successful. And that is exactly what she has done. THere were tons of other incredible stories too.

I met a wonderful woman who had been abused and beaten during her childhood. She was a larger than life person, who is now running her own design and styling company for oversized women all over the world. She came from nothing and built her empire!

So what gives certain people the strength to be so bold, so strong and so determined? THere is certainly no special formula, but some people do seem able to cope with a crisis more than others. Sometimes, the more trauma you experience, the better equipped you are at handling things.

To stay mentally strong in all given situations is extremely hard, but maybe if you follow a few of these tips it could just help: 1. Focus on what you can control, not on what you can’t.

2. After the experience, ask yourself what you have learned and how it has helped you grow as a person.

3. Tackle problems head on. THey won't just go away and looking for solutions is

far more beneficial than ignoring them.

4. Practise gratitude. No matter how tough life can feel, there is always something positive to be grateful for.

5. Owning and acknowledging your pain can be helpful.

6. Sometimes, a crisis can change the course of your whole life. Look for new opportunities.

7. Recognise your inner strength. Use affirmations such as “I can handle this”.

8. Trust in your own ability to cope.

Sometimes the more trauma you experience, the better equipped you are at handling things.

On the back of this wonderful event, we are creating a ‘You Tube’ channel, called “Its never too late”, especially to give a platform for people to tell their stories from hardship to success, in whichever way that may be, such as love, relationships, career, financial, business etc.

I think this gives everyone out there hope, that no matter how bad your life situation is right now, there are always things you can do to help inspire yourself or others. If you have a story you would

Community News & Views TOM BRAKE MP, the Liberal Democrat spokesman on exiting the European Union and international trade, was in Chichester to meet local business leaders and attend the local party's annual dinner as guest speaker.

Mr Brake arrived in Chichester earlier in the day to meet local businesses and was joined on the visits by Cllr Kate O’Kelly, county and district councillor, Cllr Jonathan Brown, Lib Dem prospective parliamentary candidate and Cllr Adrian Moss, group leader of the Liberal Democrats on Chichester District Council.

At Tristram Plants, Mr Brake listened to concerns from Martin Emmett, strategy director of Tristram Plants, about labour availability, biosecurity and the effects of increased tariffs.

Mr Emmett said: “It is often suggested that Brexit would, in various ways, enhance opportunities for import substitution. We do not accept this hypothesis and believe that the net effect of measures such as biosecurity would diminish our market.”

Ornamental plant production as undertaken by Tristram Plants is an important local industry. THe company is currently dependent on 40 per cent nonUK resident permanent staff and additional seasonal works but the proposed post-Brexit seasonal workers visa scheme will not be available to these local firms.

THe MP also visited Mr Alan Stannah, of Stannah Lifts Holdings Ltd based in Andover, Hampshire. Stannah is a family-run global business with a turnover in excess of £210m, employing 1,700 people working in the UK plus subsidiaries. Fifth-generation members of the Stannah family now manage the company and still uphold the traditional family values of quality and service that the founders established.

Mr Stannah felt that being members of the EU had brought stability and positive export opportunities. As an international business with subsidiaries and distributors in Europe and around the world, the company felt remaining in the EU was the best long-term solution despite any shortcomings.

A CHICHESTER woman has described how her life has changed since she had hip surgery, including climbing the highest peak in Britain.

Not only was walking Teresa Donald’s passion in life, it was also a major part of her social life, so when arthritis in her hip became too painful to ignore, she knew it was time to do something about it.

Nine months after her surgery, Teresa set herself the challenge of climbing the highest peak in Britain, which she did pain-free.

She said: "I started to recognise I had arthritis when I was around 40 years old. While the pain wasn’t too bad, it gradually got worse with time and eventually became unbearable.

"I have always loved walking because it is a great way to keep fit and is also a big part of my social life since I am part of a walking group, where we all love exploring new destinations.

"Before my operation, I never really let my arthritic hip impact my life because I refused to let it. However, it was very hard to ignore when I wasn’t able to walk without limping."

Teresa made an appointment at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital, with Mr Rao, who is an orthopaedic consultant.

She continued: "Following my initial appointment, I had my operation three weeks later. Almost instantly after my procedure, most of the pain I had previously been suffering from had gone and I was able to leave the hospital very shortly afterwards.

"I even managed to complete a challenging 40 mile walk around the coast of Guernsey, three months later. Following this, I then accomplished the South Downs Way walk with a friend, which was 106 miles and took us nine days to complete.

An achievement I’m particularly proud of was walking up Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Britain. THe walk was definitely one of my biggest challenges to date, however with my new hip I had a spring in my step the whole way up."

A NEW approach to supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse has been launched in West Sussex.

THe three-year programme adopts a whole family approach and has been developed by survivors of domestic abuse.

THe partnership between West Sussex County Council, UK-wide domestic abuse charity SafeLives, and specialist frontline services makes Wthe county one of only two areas in the country to pilot the work.

THe West Sussex Connect project will provide a package of support for individuals and families experiencing domestic abuse, helping people recognise the signs of abuse before it escalates and offer a range of new interventions to address needs.

Specialist support will be given to children and young people as well as those with complex needs, such as substance misuse and mental ill-health. Support will also be given to people who are still in a relationship or living with the perpetrator of abuse. As part of the work, a project is also underway to work directly with perpetrators to challenge their behaviour and encourage change.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the county council's cabinet member for safer stronger communities, said: “We are delighted to be working with SafeLives and other partners on this innovative programme which will develop complete care pathways to support victims and help them recover from harm. THe three-year West Sussex Connect pilot officially began last week with a launch event in Chichester. Representatives from each of the partners gave speeches around the work, including Rachel Williams, a SafeLives pioneer and domestic abuse survivor.

Talking about the project, Rachel said: “As a survivor myself of domestic abuse and violence, whilst I was on my own journey to freedom, no one ever asked me what 'I' wanted.

"Some services presume that they know what is right for those sadly finding themselves on similar journeys, without actually taking the time to ask them. I am elated to say that Connect is a result of asking what the victims and survivors want and need."

THe work will be delivered by THe YOU Trust, Aurora New Dawn, THe Hampton Trust and the eight Connect members of staff.

CAROLS and festive songs will be filling the stunning Arundel Cathedral in December to celebrate Christmas and raise vital funds for assistance dog charity Canine Partners.

THe event will take place on Tuesday, December 11, to raise money for the Midhurst-based charity that trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people living with disabilities across the UK, boosting their confidence and independence.

THe dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and retrieving items, opening doors and undressing a person. THey can even help load and unload a washing machine and fetch help in an emergency.

THe service will feature readings from David Robb, who portrays Dr. Richard Clarkson in historical period drama Downton Abbey, and former professional cricketer Lewis Hatchett.

THe festive evening includes carols, festive songs and readings, a demonstration by the Canine Partners Demonstration Team and the opportunity to meet some established partnerships to hear first-hand how their canine partners have transformed their lives.

THe event will take place between 6:30pm and 8pm, with doors opening at 6pm.

Tickets cost £15 per adult and £5 per child under 16, which includes mulled wine and mince pies to get you in the festive spirit.

Chichester soldiers of the First World War

By Pat Saunders, Volunteer and Amanda Rogan, Learning Officer at the Novium Museum WHEN WAR was declared on August 4, 1914, many local men readily volunteered to serve in one of the armed forces. THey came from all walks of life and were all eager to serve their country.

At the outbreak of the First World War, Britain was the only major power not to start with a conscripted army. However, it soon became evident that the current British Army was not large enough for a conflict of this scale. Although many men volunteered at the outbreak of war, it was suggested that more recruits would be gained if men could enlist and serve alongside their friends, relatives and workmates in what became known as a 'battalion of pals'.

A local ‘Pals’ Battalion was the Southdowns Battalion which was raised by Claude Lowther, owner of Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex. He raised the 11th, 12th and 13th (Service) Battalions, which became part of the wider Royal Sussex Regiment. More than 4,500 men from across East and West Sussex served with the Southdowns Battalions, known as ‘Lowther’s Lambs’ throughout the war.

At the declaration of war, many Boer War veterans returned to the colours. However, the reality of trench warfare saw a change from their training and experiences. Weaponry had

become more advanced, especially with the development of machine guns, gas and tanks.

THe Machine Gun Corps (MGC) was formed in October, 1915, in response to the need for more effective use of machine guns on the Western Front. Corporal Arthur Earnest Fletcher served in the MCG and was just 22 when he died at the Battle of the Somme THe German Army first used poisonous gas in 1915 and, although its use was condemned

by British authorities, it would later be used by the British due to its effectiveness. Private Gordon Hotston and Corporal Harry Hall of Chichester both died of injuries sustained following gas attacks in France.

Lance Corporal George Sydney Hopkins had joined up in September, 1914, and later served in the Tank Corps, which had been established in 1916 thanks to the development of the newly armoured vehicles for use in battle. In August, 1917, he sustained shrapnel wounds in battle which required the amputation of both his legs and later died of his injuries. His parents received a letter from a nurse at the clearing hospital where he died stating “he was such a splendid fellow”, and “so good through it all”.

THe brutal nature of trench warfare meant that the bodies of those killed were often unable to be recovered for formal burial.

The Royal Sussex Regiment raised a total of 23 battalions for the First World War and were involved in several major battles including The Battle of Ypres, The Battle of the Somme and The Battle of Cambrai.

Private William Harper died in 1915 and is commemorated on THe Le Touret Memorial, while Private William Clarke died in August, 1918, and is remembered on the Vis-enArtois memorial. Both memorials are located in the Pas-de-Calais region of France and commemorate soldiers with no known grave.

THe Royal Sussex Regiment raised a total of 23 battalions for the First World War and were involved in several major battles including THe Battle of Ypres, THe Battle of the Somme and THe Battle of Cambrai. Around 7,000 men from the Royal Sussex Regiment were killed throughout the duration of the war.

At the Battle of Ypres, the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment earned the title of “THe Iron Regiment” in recognition of their determination and distinguished service as reported by German prisoners of war captured during the battle. Private Ernest Blackman, Lance Corporal Francis Hurst and Private Edward Marshall were all killed during this offensive.

THe names of 46 men who were killed at the Battle of the Somme are listed on the Chichester war memorial. One survivor of this battle, and of the war, was Charles Tullett.

He served with the 7th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment and fought at the Somme in July, 1916. Charles had been part of the group of men from the Shippam’s factory that had signed up in 1914. Unfortunately, 12 men from Shippam’s were killed during the course of the war.

At the Battle of Cambrai in 1917 Sergeant Archibald Cooper won the Military Medal.

Cooper had enlisted at the outbreak of war and served in both France and Belgium. He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry during a battle in which he was also shot in the hand. He was later transported back to a convalescence home in New Haven, before joining the Royal Defence Corp. Archibald Cooper died of influenza and pneumonia in November, 1918, at Dover Military Hospital, his body was later interred back to Chichester and buried at Chichester’s Portfield Cemetery. Cambrai Avenue in Chichester is named so in commemoration of this battle.

Private Sidney Arthur Ede and Private James Harper, a veteran of the Boer War, were both killed in action during the Battle of Cambrai.

At 4,605 mm long, the ProCeed is 5 mm longer than the Ceed Sportswagon, with a longer 885 mm front overhang. At 1,422 mm in height, its roofline sits 43 mm lower than that of the Sportswagon, while ground clearance is reduced by 5 mm, to 135 mm. Constructed on the same ‘K2’ platform as other Ceed models, the 2,650 mm wheelbase remains unchanged.

THe rear of the car is what differentiates it

fully from other models in the Ceed range.

Combined with its lower overall height, the new wide rear bumper gives the car an assertive, sporty stance, with dual-tip exhausts for GT and ‘GT-Line’ models enhancing its sense of dynamism and sportiness.

From launch, the ProCeed will be available in a choice of 10 paint finishes. THe ProCeed ‘GT-Line’ will have 17- or 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels, while ProCeed GT models are fitted with 18-inch wheels as standard.

THe ProCeed diverges from other models in the Ceed family line-up with a series of changes designed to introduce a sportier ambience to the cabin. THe grey roof-liner of the Ceed and Sportswagon is replaced with black cloth to envelope and cocoon occupants, and the door sills feature metallic scuff plates.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is an aviation museum showing how a leading RAF station functioned and worked from 1918 to 1970.

This includes the aircraft, artefacts and facts about the people serving the many squadrons based here. The museum exists to conserve and exhibit the history of Tangmere airfield, its satellite airfields, and their relationship with military aviation. It aims to promote the public understanding of the role and achievements of the people involved with military aviation and to preserve our heritage for the benefit and education of future generations. They are looking for volunteers to help in their reception and shop; taking entry fees from visitors, giving directions and selling any of the 200 related aviation gifts with computerised tills.

Volunteer Van Assistant – Stonepillow Stonepillow offers shelter, information and support to empower homeless and vulnerable individuals to make positive changes in their lives. They have a large retail warehouse and a high street charity shop; selling predominantly furniture, white goods and electrical products, run with the assistance of clients and other volunteers. They are looking for a volunteer to join their friendly team at the shops to help with collecting donations and delivering purchased items. The role will include going out in the van and assisting the driver with heavy lifting.

They are very flexible and welcome any volunteers who are happy to devote as little as one morning or afternoon (morning 9.00-13.00 and afternoon 12.30 – 17.00) a week. The vans operate Monday to Friday.

Chi's charge continues! Blues hunt PostSport third win in a row at home to Hove CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to make it three wins from three as they continue to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

After a disappointing start to the season where they were hampered by injuries, Blues have found their stride in the last month.

Last weekend's 19-16 victory away at fellow strugglers Chobham has lifted Scott Ashley's side up to tenth in the 14 team London South One. With a home game against winless bottom side Hove tomorrow (2.30pm), the Oaklands Park faithful will be hopeful of a third victory on the bounce which should see them climb up the table even further.

Chi made seven changes to the side that beat London Cornish at Oaklands Park. Ed Bowden and Baz Magda came into the pack, with Henry Anscombe returning in the backs, after a 13 month sabbatical. Adam Geal, Hamish Minton and Finn Bamber were on the bench while Charlie Wallace returned to captain the side.

Blues made the brighter start but were unable to make any inroads on the scoreboard. Instead, it was the hosts who struck first, taking an early 8-0 lead.

Blues replied with two quick-fire penalties slotted home by Charlie Norton. 8-6.

Chi then started to take control and after Harry Seaman released the backs they looked odds-on to score with an overlap. THe final pass went astray though and Chobham capitalised, going straight up the field and dotting down to take a 13-6 lead.

An exchange of penalties just before the break meant that at half time Chi were 16-9 down. But rather than rue their missed chances they came out after the break determined to make amends.

Norton slotted home an early penalty to reduce the deficit to just four points.

With 20 minutes remaining, Chi took the lead for the first time in the match. An attacking line out saw Anscombe release Chris Johnson. THe number 8 then fooled the defenders with a deft one handed offload to Wallace.

THe captain outstripped two defenders to touch down. 16 - 19.

Chobham threw everything they could at Blues in the final minutes but, even with 14 players, Chi held out for a vital win which lifts them up the table.

Boss hails glorious year for Goodwood

THE boss of Goodwood racecourse has admitted 2018 has been one of the best in recent memory - despite an "horrendous" security incident which caused a major review of operations.

Alex Eade, general manager of Goodwood, said the glorious summer had led to a glorious season of flat racing on the South Downs.

But, it was dealing with the aftermath of negative headlines brought about by a brawl on opening Saturday which the former army major reflected back on.

Eade described it as "horrendous to be part of", adding: "I think many good things have come out of it."

He said: "Our security now is much more visible than it was and I think we sent a strong message. I think people realised how much it upset us personally and saw how much we care about our customers. Sometimes you learn your best lessons from adversity."

Despite the learning curve, there were plenty of highlights on the track for Eades and

the rest of the team.

Battash won the King George Qatar Stakes while Stradivarius made it a second win in the Qatar Goodwood Cup. But Eade said there were also highlights away from the course, too - not least the commitment of his staff and working at such an iconic venue known across the globe.

He said: "I love going to any sporting venue where you can still feel the energy, even when the place is empty.

"I think at Goodwood I feel the 200 years of excitement reverberating around the structures every day, it’s a really nice feeling.

I work somewhere that is other people’s hobby."

Eade said preparations were already underway to make improvements to the iconic course for next year - with a new big screen in the Gordon Enclosure, upgrades to the betting infrastructure and a host of smaller changes around eating and seating already planned for the winter.

RUNNING: A handful of races for Bognor Regis Tone Zone runners this weekend.

Last Saturday, Peter Ramsdale and Jess THomson took part in the Phoenix Jaw Dropper Half Marathon, a flat race near Walton-on-THames.

THomson came across the line first for the club in 1:40, with Ramsdale running under the 2 hour mark, finishing in 1:58.

Another race held on the Saturday was the Brutal Spider Hill 10k, an extremely tough off road course with obstacles thrown in for those taking part.

Sarah Santer was the solo runner there for the club and finished in a very respectable time of 1:20.

THe following day saw two half marathons and a full marathon events visited by the blue and orange contingent.

THe Phoenix Riverside Marathon was ran by Jude Bazeley in 5:45.

THe Bedgebury Forest Half Marathon saw Zoe Hemes and Vicky Cooper from the club both finishing in 2:11.

Five club members took on the Gosport Half Marathon this year and THomson, running her second Half Marathon of the weekend, recorded a PB of 1:35.

Chi Ladies boss slams ref as three injured in Hornets loss

Goals central to City's form FREE-SCORING Chichester City are hoping their formidable front line will keep on shooting them to success.

Miles Rutherford's side are third in the SCFL Premier and have ambitions that their wait for promotion to the Bostik South will be realised this summer.

Key to their efforts will be the form in front of goal.

With 15 matches of the league campaign gone, Chi have netted 44 times - an average of nearly three goals a game - which means they are among the top ten scorers in step five football across the country.

Manager Miles Rutherford will be looking for his side to continue that form when they head to bottom side Eastbourne United tomorrow (3pm).

City have stepped up their efforts in front of goal in recent weeks, scoring 16 times in all competitions in their last four matches.

THat was helped with a 4-1 demolition of Lancing in the SCFL Premier last time out with striker Scott Jones grabbing all the headlines as he netted a hat trick.

Kaleem Haitham, who has

made a habit of scoring from the bench, added the fourth in injury-time to complete what was a comfortable win against a battling Lancers outfit.

THose goals took Jones' tally to 13 for the campaign, making him once again City's top scorer.

But, unlike in previous years, where the goals came from two or three sources, Chi are spreading the goals throughout the team.

Haitham, Sam Ndlovu, Dave Herbert and Gicu Iordache have all contributed to the cause this season.

And they will need to keep on firing if Chi are to overcome Horsham YMCA at the top of the SCFL Premier.

Even with a game in hand, Rutherford's side are five points behind YMCA, who are very much the in-form side in the division.

With more than half of the season still to play there is still time to make up the gap.

But Chi know they will need to keep on the coat tails starting tomorrow with that trip to Eastbourne United.

With the hosts yet to win in the league all season, the odds must be firmly stacked in City's favour.

CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is calling on officials to give his players more protection after three of his players were injured in the 1-0 defeat to Watford.

THe reverse on the road to the Hornets was just Chi's second loss of the season in the National Southern Premier.

Despite the defeat, they remain top of the table by two points to Coventry United. But of more concern to Smith are the injuries caused to a number of his players.

He said: "We don't mind it being physical and we are happy giving people a battle. But we have to be looked after by the ref and he didn't do that.

"THey came to kick us everywhere and if that was the game plan then fair enough.

But we can't come off the field with one with concussion, two with damaged ankles and others with small knocks - that's not good enough. But the referee didn't lose us that game, we lost it as we weren't good enough."

Chi now have a fortnight off which will give players a chance to recover from their knocks.

THey will return to action on December 2 with a trip to Crawley Wasps in the SSE Women’s FA Cup Second Round.

Lions fighting on four fronts

PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds is urging his side to not get carried away as they remain fighting on four fronts.

With more than a third of the season gone, the Lions remain unbeaten in the SCFL Premier. But seven draws out of their 15 matches so far means that Pagham are sitting fourth in the league, eight points behind leaders Horsham YMCA. Pagham made sure that gap did not get any bigger last weekend when they hammered Hassocks 5-2, with Callum Overton (3) and George Gaskin (2) grabbing the goals.

Next up is a tough trip to Eastbourne Town coming tomorrow in the league (3pm) before cup games in the FA Vase, Sussex Senior Cup and RUR Cup. And while the mood at Nyetimber Lane remains very upbeat, the joint manager believes his talented side just need to focus on their immediate future.

Simmonds, who manages the side alongside Richie Hellen, said: "We remain in three cup competitions so we want to go as far as we did last year in at least two of the three.

"We still remain unbeaten in the league

and we want to maintain that for as long as possible but we will take each game at a time.

"THe longer that run goes on then it obviously will be a good thing as we will get more and more momentum. It also shows that we are a head team to beat.

"We will just keep on trying to do the right thing and, if we do that, then we should have a really good season."

In SCFL Division One, Sidlesham will be looking to halt the slump as they travel to bottom side St Francis Rangers tomorrow (3pm).

Steve Bailey's side have not won for nearly a month with the latest a 2-0 loss at home to Alfold last weekend.

Even with the poor run Sids remain in a relatively strong position on what has been a stop-start return to step six football.

Bailey's side sit in 12th in the 18 team division. THree points tomorrow would help the cause to push on up the table no end.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be seeking just their second league win of the season when they welcome Montpelier Villa to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins have tasted victory in just one of their last ten matches and are third bottom of the division.

A spirited performance against Westfield last time out did not produce any points with Zackary Willett netting a consolation in a 2-1 defeat.

Consistency key for Selsey to progress SELSEY boss Daren Pearce is calling on his young side to carry on with the consistency as the Blues piece together their best run of results of the season.

After an up and down start, the SCFL Division One side have won five of their last seven in all competitions.

THe latest was a 2-0 victory over Oakwood sealed by Lindon Miller and Joseph Bennett.

THat run of good form has lifted Selsey up to sixth in what is a competitive division where 11 points separates fifth from sixth bottom.

Selsey have a good chance of picking up another three points when they head to midtable Storrington tomorrow (3pm).

Pearce said: "THe aim has to be to try and stay on the coat tails of the top four and then

see where it takes us.

"It may be a cliche, but we will continue to take each game as it comes.

"THe top four are clear of everyone else at the moment. But if we can keep on picking up points then hopefully we will climb up the table. THe most important thing for us is to get that consistency."

With a host of young players forming the nucleus of the side it is no wonder that consistency has been an issue - but the manager says he is delighted with the attitude shown by his group so far.

Pearce said: "THe squad is a good group. We have no Big Time Charlies, everyone works hard for each other and I think things are going well."

Rocks raring to go as monthlong wait for a victory is over Next Game

THREE BRIDGES (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR are hoping a bumper crowd will turn out and cheer them on the way to a summer date at THe Amex.

Rocks recorded their first win in over a month last weekend when they came from behind twice to defeat Wingate & Finchley 4-2 in the Bostik Premier.

Goals from the returning Dan Smith, Jimmy Muitt, Mason Walsh and Tommy Scutt sealed the win in front of an electric crowd at Nyewood Lane.

THose three points have lifted Jack Pearce's side up to fifth and back in contention with the teams who are jostling for promotion from the league.

Attention tomorrow though will be on other matters as Rocks turn their hand to the Sussex Senior Cup when Bostik South East side THree Bridges are the visitors (3pm).

And with Bognor out of all the other knockout competitions, Pearce is hoping his young side can piece together a decent run which will help build momentum into the spring.

In a bid to encourage fans to come along, ticket prices have been reduced to adults £6 and children under 18 just £2.

Win and Rocks will be just two wins away from a final at Brighton & Hove Albion's 32,000-seater stadium in May. But Bognor fans will know that beating lower league opposition has been a bit of an

Achilles heel for their side this term.

Pearce said: "THe supporters were inspirational on Saturday with the level of support we received, especially in the second half, when we turned on a bit of style and rewarded their patience with some goals and a win.

"We want to do well in this competition and we know with the fans behind us we have a much better chance."

Bognor should have close to a full squad to pick from for the match with only defenders Keaton Wood and Corey Heath unavailable.

One player who is raring to go for the match is teen midfielder Tommy Block, who has spent the last week on trial at Scottish Premier side Hibernian.

THe former Brighton youth player described his week with Neil Lennon at Easter Road as a "fantastic experience" adding it "would be dreamland" if he was offered a contract.

But, for now, Block is very much focused on the tussle with THree Bridges.

He said: "Everyone knows what Bognor mean to me.

"THe fans are different class, there is so much to learn from Jack Pearce and Robbie Blake, and we have a young squad packed with talent.

"Hopefully we can get a win to progress in the cup. We certainly take confidence into the match after the 4-2 win over Wingate."

Roof lifted on new £18k cover ROCKS fans certainly know how to raise the roof and cheer their side on to success.

And now Bognor supporters have a helping hand when creating noise as the new Seasons end cover was officially unveiled at half-time of the 4-2 win over Wingate.

THe £18,000 cover was paid for by the club's Executive Club along with a donation from the supporters club.

Already it seems like money well spent as the cheers from a hardy bunch of Rocks fans echoed off the roof to generate an intimidating noise for away clubs.

It contributed to Bognor rounding off a good comeback victory in last weekend's Bostik Premier fixture against Wingate.

THe green and white structure took two days to put up and Bognor secretary Simon Cook says the cover has met with a positive response from fans.

He said: "THe supporters seemed to take to the new cover immediately and during the second half the extra noise was heartening to hear."

Bognor assistant manager Robbie Blake noticed the impact, too, claiming it was the best atmosphere at a home match since he joined the club in the summer.

IT'S been a while coming but it was a nice feeling to get a win last week after a run of draws and defeats.

Ahead of any game that you know we need a result in there is always a bit of nerves.

But when you get players like Dan Smith coming back there is a sense of relief as we knew that we would have someone up top who would only need one chance to get a goal.

It's not that we do not have people to do that. But with Dan and Brad up front we knew that if we conceded a silly goal (which we managed to do - again!) then we have players who could convert our good play.

As it turns out, we scored three of our four goals when Dan wasn't on the pitch. But I think having him in the side did make us more relaxed as a team as we knew he could break the deadlock.

It was a bit of an edgy match to be fair as we knew that we needed a result.

Whether it was a good performance or a bad performance, that didn’t matter; the most important thing was the result.

After the match, Jack did make it clear that he was happy with the way we played and praised some individuals.

He did say well done to Mason who I thought was unbelievable in the second half. To me, he doesn't normally say anything which is how I like it as he only ever says things to me if I haven’t played that well!

If I have played badly then normally I will hear about it.

I've had a bit of different role to play in recent weeks which has meant I've been making a few adjustments.

Being the deeper of the three in midfield, it has taken me a while to get used to it.

But it is a new challenge and thankfully I am making an impact now.

I don't think there's a position that I haven’t played at the

club but of all the positions I have played in I don't mind it.

I'm not like Doug who will run the game and control matches. He is probably the best at the club and probably in the league at doing that.

But what I think I bring is the ability to put my foot in and I think it is going OK so far.

THe Wingate match also was special as the club paid tribute to Bill Spriggs.

I did not know him personally but I had seen him around the ground and said hello to him.

It was nice to see his family there and more than anything it was good to get the three points on the board as we wanted to say thanks to Bill.

THe match was also the first for the new cover over the Seasons end of the ground.

I think Blakey summed it up on social media when it said it really boosted the atmosphere.

I don't think the pictures do it justice - it looks really really good.

But importantly, it's great for the fans. We normally attack that end in the second half and as well as shelter it provides a bit of an echo and atmosphere which is really good for us on the pitch.

Next up is THree Bridges in the Senior Cup, a competition where I have fond memories.

We are just thinking about individual matches at the moment but for me Doug and Jimmy we will tell the lads about that day out in May at THe Amex - it's not a bad place to play football.

We want to go as far as we can as our form in the other cups has not been the best as we keep on being beaten by lower league opponents.

THe only thing we're thinking about is a bit of redemption, trying to get the actual result and do some justice for the club.

Hopefully the fans will see that at home tomorrow as I think as a team we need a confidence booster.
