BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PRIORY PARK'S ice rink officially opens tomorrow after receiving both planning permission and an alcohol licence but fears remain that alcohol and skating do not mix.

Last Thursday afternoon, councillors from Chichester District Council’s alcohol and entertainment licensing

sub-committee met to discuss the sought application for the supply of alcohol and recorded and live music at the ice rink.

The mayor of Chichester, Cllr Martyn Bell has said that he is worried the park will turn into 'party central' at the weekend now that alcohol has been allowed to be served on site.

The decision to go ahead with the ice rink, made at the planning meeting on Wednesday, November 14, was the

second time councillors had to make a decision on the plans after measures to mitigate the noise had resulted in amendments to the scheme with two ‘tech zones’ rather than a single one and the method of securing the marquee structure to the ground being revised.

It was then down to councillors John W. Elliott, Penny Plant and John Ridd of the sub-committee to listen to evidence for and against alcohol and entertainment for the event.

The proposal was to serve alcohol and provide recorded music at the festive ice rink from 10am to 8.30pm between Monday and Thursday and 9am and 10pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The exception to this would be Christmas Eve, when alcohol and live and recorded music would be available between 9am and 11.30pm and New Year's Eve, from 9am to 1am.

Council employees rewarded for work

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE POSITIVE difference West Sussex County Council staff make to the lives of residents was recognised at an annual awards ceremony last Thursday.

Among the 30 winners was Kelly Pierce, a consultant midwife, who is leading a new digital project with the NHS to help families find the right support during the first years of their child’s life.

Called ‘Family Assist’, this website connects parents with a wide range of information and resources and demonstrates how technology is being used successfully to improve the lives of West Sussex residents.

Other winners included the fostering team, who work closely with carers and help them parent children in very difficult circumstances. They build close relationships with the carers to make sure the first signs of anxiety and trauma are spotted in the children.

The Sustainability Team were also recognised for their recent successes.

They have helped to launch several ‘Refill’ schemes across the county which means people can fill up water bottles for free.

They have also introduced electric pool cars which county council staff can use at work with electric vehicle charging points at council buildings.

This is the first year the event has taken place. It was held at Chichester College and was funded by the council’s private sector corporate partners.

Kelly Pierce, consultant midwife and winner of the ‘Genuinely Valued Award’, said: “I feel absolutely elated because

you do this for the residents and I know what a difference it's made to them and so it's just really nice to get some recognition.

"All of these things are absolutely a team effort and I'm just really honoured and proud of the team for getting us this far and for creating what I think is a fantastic service for families.

“You just go about the job doing what you think is the right thing to do, doing this for people and making a difference to mums and babies and families. You BY KEL don't expect to get recognition but whenkelly.wickha you do it makes you really proud.”

“The awards represent the values all our staff strive to embody. I know that choosing just a few winners was no easy task, but these particular individuals and teams have gone above and beyond to serve residents and put customers at the centre of all they do.”

All award winners were presented with a trophy and certificate at the ceremony.

Santa Claus is coming to town THE Lions Club in Chichester is bringing back the annual Christmas float next month.

Father Christmas will be seen driving through residential areas of Chichester.

The campaign starts tonight (Friday) at 5.30pm at the chapel in Swanfield Drive.

Santa will be at Northgate car park on Saturdays, from 9am to 3pm, and Thursdays, from 6pm, through to December 20.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A CHICHESTER couple have created a unique business in the city centre to help save plastic.

Husband and wife, Harry and Esther Darrah own the business after getting the idea while travelling in New Zealand.

Esther said: "New Zealand is full of shops that you can buy as much or as little as you like without the plastic so we not only found it better for the environment but helpful if we just wanted to try out a new recipe."

The Refillery has been open for just over a month and the duo have managed

to save just over 2,500 pieces of plastic already.

Some of their produce does still come in plastic but because they are buying it in bulk it’s a lot less than if they were to buy it in lots of small packets.

They also sell washing up liquid refills and laundry liquid, fabric conditioner and hand wash.

Esther continues: "We have had so many encouraging people in so far with lots becoming regular customers. A lot of the customers say how well priced it is and are definitely surprised at how many things are available.

"We sell anything from cleaning products to nuts and seeds, cereals, baking, herbs and spices, dried fruit,

grains, beans and pulses and lots more.

"The idea is that you can bring your own containers (we do have paper bags if you don’t/can’t bring your own) we weigh, you fill with whatever you need, we weigh again and then you pay.

"We really realised the plastic problem and started to make small steps to using less plastic when we watched the blue planet. It really opened our eyes to what needs to be changed. We noticed after coming back from New Zealand how this country needs to change its habits and if we can help in a small way then that’s what we will do."

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Bell, who is chairman of Chichester City Council, said: “At an extraordinary meeting of the city council held on October 27, the following motion was passed by ten votes to six with one abstention on the application details submitted at the time.

“The long hours from 9am to 10pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the sale of alcohol and recorded music just did not fit the children and families positioning.

“Three of the six councillors who supported the granting of an alcohol licence in some form thought the hours applied for were excessive.

“Why does the operator want such long hours and indoor and outdoor music? Will Priory Park became ‘party central’ at weekends? Please do not let our rink become a centre of crime and disorder and public nuisance. Skating and alcohol just do not mix.”

Throughout the meeting, reference was made to the alterations which had been made because of conditions set by Sussex Police. Mr Edward White, the applicant, was praised for his continual co-operation and acceptance of the conditions, which included issuing separate wristbands

to people of different age groups, those under 14, older teenagers and adults.

Consultant for S3K, the ice rink operators, Christopher Salmon, said: "There’s actually something to do in the evening for a change, so that’s why the hours have to reflect that.

"I’m a Chichester boy, born and bred, I want something to do in the evenings. I think we’re just reflecting our own ambition of promoting Chichester and putting a little bit of energy back into it.”

After discussion, Mr White agreed to change the proposal to delay the serving of alcohol until 11.30am every day including Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. He also agreed to remove the live music application as he said they had changed their mind about it.

The ice rink is holding a private opening today at 4pm, with its official opening, to members of public, due tomorrow.

There is a wide range of food on offer under the covered seating outside, along with a bar and heaters. Prices start from £9 for 45 minutes' skating and toddlers skate for free with an accompanying adult. Family tickets and concessions are also available.

` Climate change CITY councillor Sarah Sharp of the Green Party aims to focus the minds of councillors and the public on two essential matters at the full Chichester City Council meeting on Wednesday.

She has put two motions concerning climate change and single-use plastics.

Sarah said: “We all have a role to play in reducing climate change and reducing our use of single-use plastics. We can’t leave this to other people or other countries.

"We know the dangers to our oceans and marine life from plastic - we can all get involved in re-filling our water bottles, buying from The Refillery in Draper’s Yard, or join the #returntheplastic campaign and give back excess packaging to the supermarkets ourselves.

"I hope that the city council can get further behind this cause with small changes to look at the way it is working, but also put its weight behind a deposit scheme to eliminate the waste and reduce litter."

"Bristol City Council has passed a motion on climate change recently.

Can Chichester be the second city to follow suit?"

` Car collision SUSSEX Police were called to a two car road traffic collision in Drayton Lane, Chichester, at 10.25am on Thursday, November 22.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries. The road remained closed until 12.20pm.

Free entry for all of city's lottery players

From December 3 to 7, Pallant House Gallery and Weald and Downland Living Museum will be throwing open their doors for free to National Lottery players while visitors to Chichester Festival Theatre will receive a free book telling the story of the Festival Theatre.

This December, hundreds of National Lottery-funded visitor attractions across the UK are saying ‘thanks’ to people who have raised money for good causes by buying a lottery ticket.

To take part, visitors simply need to present their National Lottery ticket or scratchcard at each venue to receive their reward.

Pallant House Gallery is offering National Lottery players free entry to the Gallery from Monday, December 3, to Friday December 7. The gallery’s awardwinning contemporary wing, designed by Long & Kentish architects in association with Colin St John Wilson in 2006, was largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A recent major grant allowed the gallery to make substantial changes to its digital infrastructure, underpinning the launch of the new website, which will greatly improve visitor experience and eventually allow better access to their collection.

Weald and Downland Living Museum

is also offering free entry to the museum between Monday, December 3, to Friday, December 7.

The museum’s stunning new visitor centre, which opened last year, was partially funded by the Heritage Lottery fund.

For anyone who brings a Lottery ticket to Chichester Festival Theatre from December 3 to 8, they will receive a free copy of the beautifully illustrated book Restored, Refreshed, Renewed, which tells the story of the Festival Theatre’s rebirth.

There’s also the chance to enter a competition to win one of three pairs of tickets for a free backstage tour of the theatre in January, February or March, going behind the scenes of the iconic Grade II* listed building and following in the footsteps of the famous actors to have trodden its boards.

The Festival Theatre’s redevelopment in 2012, RENEW, was partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and also supported Pass It On, a three-year community participation programme charting the history of CFT and creating an archive that celebrates the past 50 years.

Ros Kerslake, chief executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage, which has been transformed by more than £7.8bn National Lottery funding since 1994.

Children visit museum to learn lessons for Parliament Week SCHOOLCHILDREN from Chichester took a special trip to the Novium Museum to learn about women's rights.

Year 6 pupils from Central CE Academy visited the museum to learn about the work of Parliament and discuss the issues around women’s rights and voting over the last 100 years.

This project, part of Parliament Week 2018, saw pupils write manifestos and design campaign posters for a local woman running for MP in 1918.

Members of the public were

encouraged to vote for their favourite of the six candidates by voting in the museum, at the school or on the Novium Museum’s Facebook page.

The pupils were invited back to the museum the following week to discover who had won the election and to discuss what it was about this candidate that had appealed to voters.

The winning candidate was Rose Cooper, who greeted and congratulated her campaign team after delivering an acceptance speech to the group.

Trudy paints up a perfect picture of work at studio

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk OVER 100 visitors attended an artist's open studio in Hambrook last Saturday.

Trudy Redfern, who is famous for her driftwood horse sculpture, held the event to showcase her work.

An array of work was on offer, including large oil canvases of horses and racing, African and English wildlife.

There were also smaller canvas oils of domestic animals, wildlife and landscapes plus oils painted on location of landscapes, horses and other animals.

A variety of mediums were used in Trudy's work, including pastels and conte drawings (composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a wax or clay base) of animals, horse sculptures, still life and life oil paintings, pencil drawings and watercolours.

Trudy said: "It is always very encouraging to see people's reaction to my art.

They are amazed at the range of artwork.

"I hold these open days based on people's requests.

It is an opportunity to market my work. It generates more work in the form of commissions and requests to

do talks and demonstrations.

"There wasn't a particular theme to this event - just a chance to see all my work together. I have been exhibiting in many galleries this year all over the country but it was a chance to see all my work together."

` Police reports OVER the week of Monday, November 12, to Sunday, November 18, there were eight reports of vehicle crime reported in beauty spot car parks.

Locations included West Stoke car park, Goodwood Racecourse, Chidham Lane, Downs Road, West Stoke and The Trundle , Goodwood.

On the Monday, in Farm Lane, Nutbourne, a property was burgled. An untidy search of the property was undertaken and a watch stolen from the property.

In North Street, Chichester, on Wednesday, November 14, items including jewellery and a passport were stolen from a property. Serial 1041 14/11.

The same day, in Old Farm Lane, Emsworth, police received a report that two Royal British Legion WW1 silhouettes had been stolen. Serial 1457 14/11.

In Upwaltham, Chichester, on the Thursday, a garage was broken into on a farm. Damage was caused to the door and garden machinery and bikes were stolen from the garage. Serial 1396 15/11.

In St Peter’s Crescent, Selsey, also on the Thursday, police received a report of an attempted break-in to a property. Doors were damaged but nothing was stolen.

In Westlands Lane, Birdham, on Saturday, November 17, a barn was broken into and garden tools were stolen from the building.

Debut novel published by city author AN AUTHOR from West Stoke has published his first novel.

Lord Stoker is wandering the Great Plains of the American West when he stumbles across a female survivor of a vicious attack.

The stakes are raised by the arrival of Buller, Stoker’s brutal and hot-headed brother, and the psychotic blackmailer, James Maybrick.

Stoker is drawn into a whirlwind of deceit, depravity and violence as he struggles to protect the girl he rescued. His journey takes him into

America’s ferocious frontier, where secrets are revealed and blood is spilled. Games of cat and mouse unfold but is Stoker the cat or the mouse?

Dick Warburton lives in West Stoke, Chichester.

He gained a first class degree in creative writing and film studies at Portsmouth University.

During his time at university, Dick wrote more than 50 articles on cinema for the student newspaper and last year he received a Masters degree in Film and Philosophy from King’s College London.

He is currently assisting two authors with their own work including a novel and a screenplay.

He said: “I have always been fascinated by the polymath explorer, Richard Burton. I discovered he had visited America around the same time Stoker is set and this helped to form the plot.”

ITEMS donated for refugees by Chichester people have been gratefully received by those in need in Calais.

The tents, sleeping bags, blankets, warm and waterproof clothing, footwear, and toiletries were taken to France by Linda Wooding, her daughter, Lucy, and Sue Gilson, of Chichester, and Dave Barton, of Bognor Regis.

These were donated to Transition Chichester's Swap Shop and collected in from kind-hearted individuals and businesses.

The four then spent four days lending a hand at the Help Refugees warehouse alongside dozens of volunteers from all over the world.

They worked in the refugee community kitchen, in the warehouse sorting clothes and in the woodyard breaking down pallets for kindling.

They also went out on daily food distribution, too, to the 300 refugees in the Calais camp and the 500 at Dunkirk, dishing out curry, rice and salad.

Linda, Lucy and Dave have been to Calais before but it was the first time for Sue, and a real eye-opener.

"It is shocking how hundreds of people have only tents for shelter now, going into freezing conditions in winter, and these are regularly confiscated and destroyed by French police we were told," said Sue. "What should be a very temporary situation feels permanent, as if it could

The group were very heartened though by all the young people from Britain, France, other countries in Europe and further afield, who had given up days, weeks and often months to offer help.

They manage to get 2,000 hot meals out without a break on a typical day and keep refugees kitted out in warm and waterproof clothes.

"With the French and British authorities seemingly doing next to nothing, it is down to these young people to keep the humanitarian aid going, often taking on big responsibilities, which is so impressive and awe-inspiring," added Sue. She is encouraging other people to think about volunteering at Calais as extra pairs of hands are always desperately needed. She is happy to talk to anyone about how to go about it and what to expect.

Santa makes a splash as he visits the canal for switch-on FATHER CHRISTMAS delighted onlookers on Sunday as he arrived at Chichester by canal boat.

The Richmond boat chugged into the canal to allow Santa to turn on the festive illuminations.

Garlands lit up the trees and path, and a colourful festive display is floating in the basin.

The Portsmouth Model Boat Display Team and the Chichester Model Boat Club were there with their illuminated boats, together with fireworks to greet Father Christmas as he entered the basin.

Families and friends were entertained by the Georgia Ramblers, and kept warm with mulled wine, mince pies and chestnuts.

Canal Trust chairman, said: "We were delighted to welcome Father Christmas to the Basin to switch on our lights.

"We are hugely grateful to our volunteer teams who worked tirelessly to prepare the displays.

It’s a busy time of the year for us on the canal as our ever-popular Father Christmas boat trips started on Saturday.

"With over 2,600 people booked in the next four weeks, our volunteer boat crews will be kept very busy."

The lights will be illuminated each day until Christmas and the Canal Café is open daily until Christmas Eve, from 9.30am to 4pm.

Celebrating Queen's city visit one year on

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A RETIRED electrician has found his own photographs which he took of the Queen's visit to Chichester in 1978.

Mr Murray Marsh was working at Roussillon Barracks when the Queen visited.

Today marks a year to the day since Her Majesty visited the Festival Theatre.

During her visit in March, 1978, to celebrate the centenary of the formation of the Royal Military Police, the Queen inspected the barracks and was then invited to lunch. When Her Majesty departed, she was escorted by the Mounted Troop.

Mr Marsh can recall her visit to the army barracks very well. He said: "I've seen the Queen at Ardingly and the barracks twice in my time.

"When she came to the barracks, I couldn't work because of security, but I thought I would use my camera instead and take pictures of her.

"I followed her on the tour around the building and into the officers' mess so I could take pictures and then later enter them into a competition. I remember her feeding a horse a carrot."

Mr Marsh was born in Bath and sent to Chichester in 1962 when the college of further education was built at Westgate Fields.

He stayed at a B&B in Fishbourne and

even relocated to Hunston when the owner moved the accommodation there, living with her until 2000.

Mr Marsh was a member of Bognor Regis Camera Club until it turned digital, winning several trophies and having some of his work published.

He said: "In 1974, I was awarded the Record slide plaque by the central association of photographic societies, for a picture of a tall ship taken at sea off

Portsmouth.

"The magazine, This England, hold some of my pictures and have published several in the past.

"I have also visited and photographed most of the war grave cemeteries and sites of the Second World War in Normandy."

The Queen’s visit last November was the first to the theatre in more than 50 years.

She first visited on July 31, 1962, and returned in 1964.

Crowds gather on wet night as city tree is blessed with carol concert

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk DESPITE a wet and chilly evening, the Market Cross became a central gathering for residents and visitors to the city.

The annual Rotary Clubs of Chichester Christmas tree blessing and switch-on event took place on Saturday.

The event began with a torchlight procession from Crane Street through North Street and finishing at the Market Cross where the city's magnificent tree stood.

Oakwood School treated crowds to carols and songs including Silent Night and Santa Claus is coming to town.

Yvonne Lee, assistant head at the school, said: "Our choir were delighted to sing at the switching on of the Christmas lights, it has become an annual tradition for us that the children really look forward to.

"At Oakwood, we are committed to being a part of our local community and sharing our children's talents. We are so proud of our choir and hope everyone attending the switching on of Chichester's beautiful Christmas lights enjoyed their singing.

"Last Saturday was the start of a series of Christmas events for our school, culminating this year with hosting Funtington Community Christmas at the school on Christmas Day." The Dean of Chichester, the Very Rev Stephen Waine, then blessed the tree

before Chichester Mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell, gave the countdown and switched on the lights.

The Dean said: "As we approach this festive time, this time of carols and this time of celebrations, we ask God's blessing on this Christmas tree, part of our Christmas here in Chichester but also to ask God's blessing on ourselves and all those whom we will spend Christmas with. And of course, remember that at the heart of this is a baby, born in a manger, in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago."

The mayor then said: "Thank you Rotary in everything you have done in organising this. We have a break in the rain as well, which is great."

The Chichester Community Choir and members from the Chichester City Band continued to entertain crowds with more festive songs and hymns.

Andrea Cifelli, from the band, said: "Our small group from Chichester City Band was really pleased to be able to help out with this event.

"We've previously played for the switching on of the Christmas lights in the city centre, and so when we found out that it wasn't happening this year, we jumped at the chance to help the Rotary Club light up the Christmas tree.

"It was great to see lots of people turn up in support, and it was lovely to have our friends from the community choir join us to help lead the singing."

The main streets were already lit up before the tree this year with festive lights by Chichester BID.

Lucy Wright and her husband, Sam, visited with their children, Nancy, seven and four-year-old Freya.

She said: "I'm really impressed with how many people have come out this evening to see the lights.

"We were a bit worried when we first heard the main lights were just being switched on and there were no fireworks but the city has pulled it out of the bag.

"The children in the choir were amazing and so brave to sing so well in front of so many people. I hope they are all really proud of themselves."

The Chichester BID still has many exciting plans coming up, including street performers entertaining weekend and late-night shoppers with acts ranging from a magical living snow globe, an all Santa brass band, dancing Christmas trees and roller-skating presents.

There is also the chance to win one of five prizes by joining the Nutcracker Trail.

Participants can track down the names of ten, six foot Nutcracker kings guarding various locations around the city.

Father Christmas will also be visiting Chichester, with appearances at The Novium Museum from Saturday.

Santa is ready to grant kids' wishes A MAGICAL day was in store for everyone visiting Brick Kiln Garden Centre on Saturday with the grand arrival of Father Christmas and the opening of Santa’s Grotto.

The garden centre, situated on the Bognor Road to Chichester, was transformed into a spectacular Christmas delight as Santa arrived in the car park to be greeted by lots of excited children.

The special day included magician Nick Clark taking centre stage in the café, Face Fanatics painting the faces of children to transform them into their favourite characters and a Music Smart Choir singing Christmas carols in support of Chestnut Tree House hospice.

Pagham Ponies were also part of the show, with all the children gathering up to greet the miniature Shetland ponies. To make the atmosphere extra festive was Chichester Hospital Radio 's Malcolm and Peter, who were broadcasting Christmas tunes through the centre.

What everyone went there to see was, of course, Father Christmas, who was guided into his enchanting grotto by his three elves.

Event organiser Lorrayne Mendes said: "This is an event we look forward to all year. We spend so much time building and decorating the grotto and planning the event so it’s really rewarding to see the children enjoy the day. For people who haven’t been able to make it to the opening, the grotto is open every weekend until Christmas Eve so call the garden centre to book your ticket."

Not only is the grotto open every weekend, Brick Kiln are also hosting tea and breakfast with Santa and several choirs are performing Christmas carols over the festive season.

` City band festivities CHICHESTER City Band have announced their upcoming concerts and venues of festive music this Christmas.

The band will be playing this Sunday, from 5pm to 6pm, at Carols in the Park in Hotham Park, Bognor Regis.

On Friday, December 7, Chichester City Band will be playing at a charity carol service starting at 7.30pm at South Bersted Church, South Bersted, Bognor Regis, with proceeds in aid of Chestnut Tree House.

Guests can come along on Friday, December 14, and hear the magnificent sounds of the local brass band with musical entertainment for the festive season.

The concert will feature sing-along Christmas carols and other tunes.

You'll also be able to see the group's fabulous training band.

This concert also marks the retirement of Don Webb, who has loyally served the band as a trombonist for over 30 years.

The concert will be held between 7.30pm and 10pm at St Paul's Church in Chichester. Tickets for the evening are around £10 and accompanied under 14s are free.

City's choral masterpiece

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk FANS OF Leonard Bernstein gathered at Chichester Cathedral on Saturday evening to hear the choral masterpiece, Chichester Psalms, played.

The concert programme was held with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop and with the choirs of Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals.

Alexander Bernstein flew from America to sit in the audience and listen to his father's work. He last visited Chichester in July, 1965, with his father, mother and sister, Jamie, to attend the first performance in the cathedral of Chichester Psalms.

Speaking exclusively to the Chichester Post, Alexander said: "It feels wonderful to be back. I wish I remembered more from the last time I was here. I do remember the cathedral itself and hearing the psalms for the first time which was so exciting.

"It was wonderful having Leonard Bernstein as my father. He was a lot of fun to be around. He loved to laugh and play games. He always loved meeting people.

He would take us to work with him.

"There were very few downsides to growing up with Leonard Bernstein!

People were always coming over to the house, it was always a hive of activity, it was extraordinary.

"When he was with his family at home, he was really with us. It was really fun

when I got to be by myself with him. He'd take me on ski-ing trips.

"All those people wanted a piece of him, but he was mine, all of the time!

"The Leonard Bernstein Centre has a programme called Artful Learning and that's what I spend a lot of my time writing. We work with schools all across the US putting the creative process of arts at the centre of teaching and learning in schools. There was an element of luck in Chichester Psalms. It was his doctor who introduced him to Dean Walter Hussey and he took the chance and asked my father who said yes.

"There was a possibility that it wouldn't have been written because he was writing a muscial theatre piece based on a play called The Skin Of Our Teeth that they couldn't go on with anymore, so it was given up. At which point, he took a sabbatical and wrote the psalms."

When asked what his favourite piece of his father's was, Alexander laughed and said: "I couldn't pick a single piece. Last week it was a different one from now.

Chichester Psalms is right up there. There aren't many that I don't really love. His music is so unique."

Edward Milward-Oliver, co-organiser of Bernstein in Chichester, said: "Reflecting on Saturday’s concert in the cathedral, when 850 stood and applauded at the end, there was an overwhelming sense that yes, the Chichester Psalms and the ties with Leonard Bernstein are treasured by this community. A moment that everyone who was there will cherish forever."

Early shoppers find unique gifts at living museum

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk KEEN CHRISTMAS shoppers enjoyed a festive day out at the Weald and Downland Living Museum last weekend.

The annual Christmas market returned to Singleton and saw thousands of visitors, despite a wet Saturday.

Guests could find that perfect gift and enjoy a great day out at the museum at the same time.

Over 150 stands were set up selling arts, crafts, food, unusual gifts and much more, in and around the collection of rescued historic buildings and houses.

As well as craft and trade stands, there was festive music and tasty seasonal treats to sample and buy.

Visitor Tom Sands and his partner Maria had travelled to Chichester for the weekend to see their family.

Tom said: "My parents live nearby so we thought while we were down here, we would take a visit to the museum.

"I used to come here as a child, so it's nice to be back but it's also lovely to come for the market.

"There are so many lovely and unique things to buy.

"I do believe we should be supporting our local high street and also small businesses like most of these are.

It makes it more personal to buy

something from a place like this because it's different."

Music and entertainment at the event included Chichester City Band, Southdowns Folk Singers, Dan the Hat (comedian and juggler) and Chichester Festival Theatre - Get Singing Choir.

Stalls included; art prints, jewellery, marshmallows, fudge, upholstery, scarves, soaps and toiletries, ceramics, chocolates, photography, pottery, woodcraft and gins.

Martin Gilbert, from Chichester Harbour Gins in Emsworth, said: "We had such a great time at the Weald and Downland, which was our first Christmas market, having only launched our small batch of hand crafted gin at the end of August.

"Our gin was met with such a wonderful response by the customers of the Weald and Downland, who loved both the flavours and the branding."

Caroline Gibbons from Caroline’s Essences, creators of organic creams, said: "I really enjoyed the show. It was very successful for me with lots of friendly people interested in my creams and record sales for me.

"It’s the second year that I have done this Christmas market and I really feel it brings forth the spirit of Christmas with lots of handmade, local products, delicious food, music, Christmas trees and lights, the list goes on!"

NEW OUTDOOR gym equipment has been installed in Fishbourne, giving residents the chance to exercise free of charge.

The eight pieces of equipment, including balance beams, cross trainer, and air skier, have been bought by Fishbourne Parish Council and sited on land owned by the Fishbourne Playing Fields Association, in a joint project.

Fishbourne Parish Council chairman Geoff Hand said: "Everyone is more aware of the need to stay healthy and active, and this equipment means that everyone in the village now has free access to top class facilities. And because it’s outdoors, people will get plenty of fresh air too."

The equipment was paid for with money from the new homes bonus which is the money which comes from central government to areas where new houses have been built, for improvements to communities.

Women continue their fight at the Westminster debate

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PURPLE-CLAD women campaigners of Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) from the south coast region converged on Westminster on Thursday, last week.

The latest opposition debate on equalisation of the State Pension Age, was tabled by SNP MP Patricia Gibson.

She and WASPI believe it is right for men and women to receive their state pension at the same age but object to the way the policy was introduced and implemented, with little time or no notice to make alternative financial or life plans, after paying national insurance contributions for more than 35 years.

Three women from Bognor Regis and Chichester WASPI group, Jill Robertson, Carol Groves and Christine Murray, heard the MP open the debate saying: "The weight of despair, the burning sense of injustice and the genuine bewilderment felt by the women who, by sheer bad luck, were born in the 1950s and thereby inexplicably became fair game to be robbed, mugged and made the victims of theft of the most cruel and callous kind."

Support was heard from over 20 MPs in the debate room, including Bob Seely the Conservative MP for the Isle of Wight.

Mr Nick Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, had representation from a member of his staff, Stephen Furlong.

The debate, which lasted just over two hours, heard a reply from the UnderSecretary of State for Pensions, Guy

Opperman.

The debate was non-binding, but the majority of votes supported the WASPI women.

Outside, in the cold weather, further groups of WASPI women from as far as Devon to the Scottish Borders also attended, gathered to put pressure on the Government to resolve the issue.

A Southern region WASPI spokesperson said: "WASPI are grateful to many crossparty MPs who steadfastly work on their behalf, especially those who spoke in Thursday’s debate.

"We will make our presence felt at every parliamentary debate until we get justice. The Government needs to know that every quoted statistic represents real women.

"Some have had to sell their homes

to make ends meet, some have been awarded past divorce settlements based on an SPA of 60 years of age.

"Some struggle with ill-health and, perhaps, while helping to care for other family members young or old, on reduced financial means. After career dreams have been shattered.

"Some women are single and have to cope with all the above situations. But regardless of circumstances, all have suffered an injustice and the Government has a duty to correct this. For every woman who made the journey to London there were many who could not.

"We were there for all those invisible women around the country who deserve better state pension justice. And we will be there on every occasion until we get it."

Fire pupils shine A GROUP of students has graduated after a week of training at Bognor Regis Fire Station.

The seven young people spent a week taking part in drills, which included hose running, ladder climbs and wearing breathing apparatus.

They also learned skills like resuscitation and fire safety by completing West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's FireBreak programme.

They took part in a pass out parade at the West Meads Drive building last week, when they received their certificates.

Graham Harmour, the lead instructor, said: "It's been a challenging week but the students have learned a number of valuable skills which they will be able

to use as they develop and grow. I am proud of each one of them for finishing the course."

The students who graduated, and their schools, were: Brandon Rennie (St Philip Howard); Callum Hickman (Chichester High School); Jamie Banks (Ormiston Six Villages); Kai Dwyer and Keeley Brown (Seadown School); Ryan ChalkChambers (Cornfield School); and Taylor Kennett (Felpham Community College).

Ryan also received an outstanding achievement award.

County Council cabinet member for safer, stronger committees, Cllr Debbie Kennard, said: "Well done to another fantastic group of young people who have worked hard."

Birthday bash raises cash

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE EXECUTIVE principal of Chichester College Group has raised £28,000 for a children's charity after he asked for donations rather than gifts for his 50th birthday.

Andrew Green held a charity ball earlier this month to celebrate his big day and to support PACSO, a charity which helps children with disabilities and their families in the county's Chichester and Arun districts.

Some 100 guests came together for the black tie event, held at the Grand Hotel in Brighton, where they were treated to live music, a charity auction and a special performance

by Theatre Inc – Chichester College’s awardwinning theatre company, which provides performing arts training tailored to young people with learning disabilities.

Andrew said: “I knew I wanted to do something special to mark my 50th birthday, and I wanted to do something that would

make a difference.

“PACSO is a fantastic local charity that does so much to support parents with children who have various disabilities, including those with learning difficulties or disabilities.

“As a parent of an ADHD child, I know how important this support is. So to be able to put on an event that would not only bring together my family, my friends and colleagues and raise money for an amazing cause was brilliant.

“I was blown away by the donations and success of the auction. To raise £28,000 for PACSO was probably the best gift I could have asked for.

“It was a brilliant evening, and I am extremely grateful to the generosity of everyone who joined us.”

Clare Elkington, the charity's chairman of trustees, added: "All at PACSO are very grateful to Andrew for raising so much to support our families with a child or young person with a disability.

"A huge thank you and happy 50th birthday!"

` Christmas crackdown MOTORISTS tempted to drink and drive this Christmas have been warned

by Sussex Police their details will be published online.

The force will launch its annual festive campaign tomorrow, aimed at tackling those who get behind their steering wheels under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Its 2018 crackdown will feature a range of colourful characters to illustrate the effects of driving in that condition. But Chief Inspector Andy Gooch, of the Surrey and Sussex roads policing unit, said the matter was nothing to laugh about.

"Drink and drug-driving destroys lives.

It happens year on year and sadly, despite our repeated warnings, there will always be a minority of selfish and shameful individuals who still continue to put the lives of themselves and others at risk."

Surrey and Sussex Police will have officers committed to the campaign, which will run until January 1.

Details of those convicted - including their name, age, address and occupation - will be published by the police online in keeping with their previous campaigns.

During the previous campaign, 195 arrests were made in Sussex, of which at least 130 individuals were convicted.

A total of 56 people died in road traffic collisions in Sussex last year. Of those, almost one in four - 13 - involved a drinkdriver. Chief Insp Gooch warned drivers to be aware of how much alcohol they had consumed before they drove.

Those who gambled with their lives risked a minimum 12-month ban, an unlimited fine, a possible prison sentence, a criminal record, an increase in their car insurance premium and difficulty travelling to countries like the USA. Anyone known to be driving over the limit or when taking drugs should be reported on 999.

Cathy helps protect planet with initiative f Yehudi Menuhin students entertained a packed cathedral

Talented musicians play for sick children A SPECIAL concert was held by pupils of a school to help raise money for The Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

The Yehudi Menuhin School, which nurtures the top musicians in the world, performed at Arundel Cathedral to an eager audience.

With a simple, yet vivid backdrop of a blood red carpet and poppies, the musicians transported the audience through their passion for music.

The school's founder, Yehudi Menuhin, famously visited the death camps at the end of the Second World War and played for the benefit of the survivors.

The programme involved talented young students from the UK, Spain, Indonesia, China and Serbia, with

The Aldingbourne Trust has its own reusable bags to raise funds for its work with adults with learning disabilities and autism, thanks to the mother of a volunteer at its country centre.

Cathy Tiley ensures empty hessian bags are no has-beens by using her sewing skills to create the long-lasting goods.

She is working with the earthworks project at the centre, just north of the A27, to print and sew on the trust's logo.

Gill Nudds, the earthworks project lead, said: "This is such a fantastic opportunity for the people we are supporting in our department. It is a completely new set of skills they will gain."

The wood team has also got involved.

Its project lead, Brian Alden, was given an old leather sofa which Cathy stripped for the bag handles. She came back to the UK after 30 years abroad when her husband started a job in London. Their four children had grown up and she wanted to make good use of her time.

Di Levantine, co-founder and chairman of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, said: "We are so delighted to have these incredible students supporting the charity with this performance.

It is especially poignant on the eve of the Armistice Centenary for us to recognise the sacrifice of the 93 soldiers who gave their lives in Arundel as we sit in the pews alongside figures from the ‘There But Not There’ campaign."

ALADDIN and his magic lamp will be coming to Worthing ready for this year's pantomime.

Worthing Theatres and Paul Holman Associates have an exciting star cast for their annual family pantomime playing at the Pavilion Theatre from Friday until Tuesday, January 1.

Lee Latchford-Evans, of STEPS megafame, will take on the title role.

He is joined by CBeebies favourite, TV presenter Rebecca Keatley, as the feisty Princess Jasmine, along with award-winning comedian Vikki Stone, who brings her unique comedy style to play the male role of the evil Abanazar.

Completing the line-up is comic Mark Jones as Wishee Washee and Brighton cabaret star Dave Lynn as Widow Twankey.

The magical Genie of the Lamp will be a spectacular 12-foot puppet voiced, in pre-recorded footage, by legendary actor and national treasure, Brian Blessed, famed for his booming performances in iconic movies such as Flash Gordon.

The cast will be joined by talented local children who, after successfully auditioning, will perform alongside the cast of seasoned professionals as both dancers and a junior police force.

Pantomime producer Paul Holman said: “Aladdin is our fastest-selling

Sleeping Beauty at Chichester Festival Theatre

The famous stage is given over to Chichester Festival Youth Theatre, whose wonderfully imaginative productions are treated just like a main Festival show – they are professional productions that just happen to have a cast exclusively of young people.

Lucy Betts, director of this year’s production of Sleeping Beauty, was herself a member of the Youth Theatre between the ages of seven and 20. It is written by Rufus Norris, who is now director of the National Theatre.

By Alicia Denny HARMONY is the key for a choir singing together but what happens when a newcomer arrives in a group - and is not quite what she seems?

That's the intriguing start of The Nightingales, which is billed as a comedy and certainly has many deft and witty touches in the script but underneath lurks the pathos and half-truths hidden in many people's lives.

Best known from television's Gavin and Stacey, Ruth Jones is outstanding as Maggie, the voluble outsider who becomes a catalyst for change in the cosy community choir's dynamics.

She encourages the audience to have sympathy for her by speaking directly of her experiences and feelings but, as the narrative progresses, there is growing disquiet about her background, suspicions shared by her fellow

characters.

The other five actors - Steven Pacey as choir leader Steven, Sarah Earnshaw as Connie, who has ambitions and can really sing, Philip McGinley as her downto-earth husband Ben, Mary Stockley as the devious Diane and Stefan Adegbola in the difficult role of lothario Bruno have an easy-going rapport, making for believable characterisation.

With a talent contest being the hook which encourages the choir to change direction, there are nods to many facets of human nature in the neat script but, as Maggie sums up at the end, people are enigmas.

THE STREETS of Chichester will be filled with festive fun as the annual Christmas market arrives in the city from next week.

The market will last for nine days as stalls fill North Street and East Street full of gifts. There will also be a nativity set with donkeys to entertain the children and there will be carol singing throughout the week.

People will find a spectacular range of carefully selected top quality crafts, decorations, festive food and unusual, individual gifts for all your friends and family.

Paul Bishop is the organiser from Woodland Crafts, which run a variety of different events in the area.

He said: "We like to bring something different to Chichester which isn't readily available all the time.

"We like the festive atmosphere. It's lovely when it's really busy. We have a nativity which is delightful. Children are always delighted by that.

"We also have Mary and Joseph outside Marks and Spencer. We just like to be able to bring something that's very different."

Mr Bishop said that it always proved a big success.

"We get a fantastic response from the public every year," he said.

"It's very well received. Although it's a Christmas market, most of the stalls there are run by people who aren't market traders.

"They are craftspeople who come from quite a wide area, as well as lots of local people.

"There are a lot of very nice quality things and a lot of unique things. People like to give a gift that is a bit unusual.

"They like to give something which

when it's opened shows they have given some thought to. That's what we are all about."

The market will run from Saturday, December 8, until Sunday, December 16. It will run from 9am until 5.30pm from Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 9am until 8pm on Thursday and from 10am until 4.30pm on Sunday.

The market is organised and managed entirely by Woodland Crafts Events Management, with co-operation from Chichester District Council and the Chichester BID team.

By Alicia Denny FOR ANYONE who has enjoyed holidays in Turkey - or people who just like different high-class dining experiences - the opening of Reina's Kitchen will be happily welcomed.

Londoner Mehmet Yenturt had been looking to move out of the city for his next restaurant venture and had not considered Chichester until his detailed researches discovered a gap in the market in the city for the style of quality Turkish cuisine he wanted to offer.

He came upon the former shop at 10-12 Market Road last spring and has spent six months completely renovating the shell, including adding all services, to create a state of the art dining area with a fully open kitchen so diners can watch five top chefs at work preparing their meals.

The chefs, all of whom have trained in Turkey, are led by Mehmet's father-in-law, who brings 30 years' of experience and culinary skill to the kitchen.

His high standards apply not only to the quality of food preparation but also to the freshness of ingredients. Unusually for a restaurant, there is only one freezer and that is for storage of chips and ice cream - every other ingredient is fresh.

Meat and fish come from the markets freshly purchased from Portsmouth. The chefs at Reina then marinade it in olive oil to enhance the flavour, organic herbs and spices are brought in from farms in South East Turkey on a regular basis.

The menu includes traditional Turkish dishes, including old favourites, family recipes and chefs' own specialities. A lumpwood charcoal grill enables flavoursome meats to be cooked then served immediately.

Lunches are available Monday to Friday and dinner daily from noon to midnight as well as meze snacks and drinks.

After all the months of hard work, resulting in what Mehmet calls an amazing transformation, he can't wait to share his restaurant venture with the people of Chichester and surrounding area.

also launched new Grace Church sites in Midhurst and in Havant. We are excited to have taken possession this year of the former Ambulance Station in Terminus Road – now called the Grace Centre! We see this as a facility to serve the community, so as well as meeting there on a Sunday morning, there will be many activities going on throughout the week.

By Alicia Denny GRACE CHURCH is a young and vibrant church with a vision to make a difference in a large area centred on Chichester and reaching from the South Downs to the sea.

It is a multi-site church with one leadership and vision, with Sunday meetings held in four locations: Chichester, Bognor Regis, Midhurst and Havant.

To find out more about how the church has grown and plans for its future, we asked its Lead Elder, David Thompson to answer a few questions:

How and when did Grace Church come to the Chichester and Bognor Regis area?

Grace Church met publicly for the first time in June, 2006. From small beginnings with a handful of people meeting at Oving Jubilee Village Hall, the church has continued to grow to over 400 people. By 2013 we were already having an impact on both Chichester and Bognor Regis, but all our Sunday services and other church activities happened in the old Grace Centre at the far end of Terminus Road. When that site was redeveloped into the Chichester Enterprise Gateway, it made sense to begin meeting in Bognor Regis as well as in Chichester.

This move to Bognor Regis has enabled us to serve that community much more effectively. Over the last five years we have started the popular Little Bears toddler group and become a CAP Life Skills Centre. We have continued to grow and are now moving our Sunday venue to South Way Primary School so we can fit more people in.

In Chichester we currently meet at Chichester High School, Kingsham Road at 11am each Sunday morning. However, in 2019 we will be opening our new Grace Centre in Terminus Road.

In Bognor Regis, from December 16, we will be meeting at South Way Primary School in North Bersted at 10am each Sunday (with the exception of our carol service on December 23, which will start at 3.30pm).

In Midhurst we meet weekly at Midhurst Rother College, North Street, and in Havant we meet at Warblington School, Southleigh Road. Each of these meetings start at 10am.

When many other churches are struggling to gain and keep worshippers, can you explain the success of Grace Church?

Despite reports to the contrary the Christian church is thriving around the world and the UK is no different. Grace Church, like many churches around the UK, is on a mission to make Jesus Christ known today. The way we do this is by being highly relational both with members of our congregation, and

also with the wider community. The word Grace means receiving something that we didn’t earn and don’t deserve. The Christian message is that God has shown his grace to us by sending Jesus. Therefore, we love to demonstrate grace to our community through acts of kindness. For example, we regularly hold community events such as fun days, BBQs and this year’s successful ‘Screen on the Green’ open air cinema event. I guess people often ask why we are doing these things and that is an opportunity to tell them about God’s unconditional love. We also run Alpha Courses for people who want to find out more. We find that there is a real hunger in our society for friendship and a feeling of belonging. Therefore, we work hard to make sure that church is not just about turning up to a service, but about building relationships and being part of a community. Once people come, they don’t want to leave!

Do you have plans to expand any further?

We launched our Havant site during 2018, so it is exciting to see this becoming established in the year ahead. We have no immediate plans to add more sites, but there are always opportunities to expand into new ways of serving the community. We are looking forward to being able to run groups, courses and events in our new Grace Centre.

Are the meetings open to all ages and will people find a warm welcome?

Absolutely! There is a huge diversity of people at Grace Church, including all ages.

THE GOODWOOD Flying School hosted its annual end of season awards on the evening of Thursday, November 15, at The Kennels private member’s club. The event recognised the achievements of both those who have reached significant milestones in their flight training and those who have made a notable impact at the aerodrome.

The Johnny Moss Award, named in honour of the late Johnny Moss, former non-executive director of Goodwood and army helicopter pilot, who was a great friend of the aerodrome, was presented to Melanie Wright, Goodwood Aerodrome programme manager. Mel is responsible for ensuring the smooth everyday running of the flying school, managing bookings and handling logistics.

The Goodwood Flying School student of the year award was given to Max Tams, pictured above with aviation general manager, Rob Wildeboer, who this year gained his light aircraft pilot licence. Max had always dreamed of flying and proved a terrific student, going solo in the minimum required hours in the Piper Super Cub. Mark Swanton, senior aerodrome fire officer, was presented with the award for professional achievement, having maintained a cool head during a challenging first year at the aerodrome, as well as taking the initiative and commissioning new vehicles.

A total of seven students received their private pilot licence qualifications on the night, while 12 had managed their first solo this year. Harry Miller and Jack Newman received their qualifications having completed the flying instructor course, while six students were recognised for having completed their tailwheel conversion.

A special memento was given to Jerry Mudford from the Blue Sky Group, who accepted the award on behalf of Vic Kimber, who had passed away recently but was instrumental in starting the group some 20 years ago with Alan Budd.

Max Tams, student of the year, said; “The awards evening was a celebration of the camaraderie of Goodwood Flying School, and to see such a vibrant and enthusiastic group, all driven by their unquenchable desire to fly, is inspirational!"

A HOST of employers from across Sussex and Hampshire came together last week to meet Chichester College students.

Over 11 companies and organisations were on hand to talk about job opportunities and to inspire students as they start looking to the future.

From Sussex Police and Western Sussex NHS Hospital Trust to Amberley Museum, Gi Group and Vitacress, the groups were invited to be part of a special STEM careers event, organised by the college's Enterprise Society to give the college's science, technology, engineering and maths students a flavour of the different types of career paths on offer to them.

Andy Chater, head of learning for STEM at Chichester College, said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to take the next steps towards their futures.

"We have a solid commitment to ensuring our students leave the college with the qualifications, skills

and experiences they need to help them find employment.

"And this event has helped many of them make connections with employers and see for themselves what they could achieve.

"It's given them an opportunity to meet a whole range of people, with different backgrounds and career paths, enabling them to not only talk to people working in their chosen field as well as show them some other avenues that they may not have considered.

"There are so many opportunities out there for them and we hope this has opened their eyes and inspired them.

“We must also thank the employers who generously gave their time to support the event and inspire our learners.”

LOVE thy neighbour was the theme of a special meeting held at the Quaker Meeting House.

A stimulating evening was spent exploring how the theme of loving thy neighbour is interpreted by local Hindus (from the Vedic Society), a local Imaam, Jews and Quakers.

After a light supper, speakers from the various groups represented spoke briefly on the theme. While it might be thought to be a purely Christian idea, the idea of caring for each other in this way was shown to be both more ancient, being included in both Hindu texts from some 3,000 years ago, and the Hebrew Bible of a similar age, and common to all the faiths present. Love and charity exist for Moslems, Jews and Hindus just as they do for Quakers and Christians.

Bill McMellon, of the group, said: "About 30 people attended and the speakers were followed by a stimulating (and sometimes perplexed) discussion.

"If these ideas are so widespread, why are people so often at daggers drawn? For all that, there was an encouraging feeling of unity throughout the evening.

"The Chichester Quakers Interfaith Planning Group exists to explore ways people of different faiths might usefully cooperate. This is believed to be important at a time when division appears to be on the increase."

The Quakers hold regular meetings for worship in Chichester on Sundays, at 10.30am to 11.45am, and the first Thursday of the month, at 7pm to 7.45pm.

ASSISTANCE dog charity Canine Partners is celebrating a year since The Queen visited their Southern Training Centre near Midhurst.

Canine Partners is a national charity that trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence.

Her Majesty visited the centre on Thursday, November 30 2017, where she had the opportunity to meet staff, trustees, volunteers and beneficiaries of the charity.

“My trainer, Stephen, and I watched through the chalet window as The Queen arrived before she came in to meet us in private,” says Jonathan Fletcher, a 57-year-old partnered with canine partner Georgia.

“Georgia, being Georgia, was cheeky and took one look at the Queen’s handbag before creeping across and putting her nose on it – breaking protocol completely!”

The Queen had the opportunity to meet the charity’s amazing dogs at all stages of training, with the youngest puppy she met, black Labrador Flint, being just 12 weeks old at the time.

To showcase the task work the amazing dogs are trained to do, Her Majesty watched a demonstration by the advanced training teams and was impressed by the dogs’ ability to unload the washing machine and pick up dropped items, asking questions throughout and commenting on their impressive skills.

During her short visit, Her Majesty also had the opportunity to view the accommodation used by partners who are undertaking their onsite training course and beginning their incredible journey with their assistance dogs.

Soldiers of the First World War

Many men were drafted in to specialist units or other regiments.

When the Military Act came into force on March 2, 1916, conscription was introduced for the first time, ensuring that every unmarried (or widowed) man between the ages of 18–40 could be compelled to serve in the armed forces. By this stage, some men had left Chichester to work elsewhere and were drafted into other regiments.

Private Alfred Faith was serving with the Devonshire Regiment when their line sustained a heavy bombardment on December 30, 1916. He was killed and is buried in Richebourg, France.

Company Quartermaster Sergeant Robert Ernest Keast Hodge was born in Chichester but, at the outbreak of war, had been living in New Zealand for ten years. Although initially rejected on medical grounds, he was later accepted and served with Auckland Regiment. He was killed on February 5, 1918, his 30th birthday.

The captain of his company wrote to Hodge’s sister telling her that Hodge was killed instantly by a shell at 8.15 in the morning as

the men were coming out of the line to move back to the support trench. He was a very popular man with all ranks.

Frank Cutten, of the famous Chichester coach-building family, served in the Essex Regiment. Frank had previously had a successful football career and had moved from Chichester to play for Fulham’s first team (which he did between 1906-07).

He was killed on the morning of March 23, 1917, during the Battle of Arras. His widow was notified about his death in a letter from his commanding officer and was informed that he was killed during a raid on German trenches. His death was ‘instantaneous and painless’. His body was recovered that same night and later buried by the chaplain in a nearby cemetery.

Soldiers sent to the front fell into a routine of being rotated around and undertaking different roles. These included placement in the front line trenches from where offensives were launched and spending time in the reserve trenches where work parties were deployed to maintain the trench systems and repair damage caused by shelling.

In February, 1917, the 7th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment had been at Arras, an area

that saw fierce fighting. Diary entries about this time record that because of shelling and sniper fire near the front, a lot of the repair work needed in trenches was carried out by work parties at night.

When soldiers were not in the trenches, they were sent back to billets for some respite but were expected to clean their kit for inspections and parades and train for future action. Diary records from the 7th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment record that the regiment were visited by King George V and Prince of Wales on August 10, 1916, and on March 6, 1917, they were inspected by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig.

When men were away from the trenches, behind the lines, leisure activities such as football matches between different battalions were encouraged. One such match took place on December 27, 1916, between the 8th Royal Fusiliers and 7th Royal Sussex Regiment, with the 8th Royal Fusiliers winning the match.

A few men from Chichester were offered commissions. On December 1, 1915, Lieutenant Rowland Thorowgood received a commission. At the outbreak of war, Thorowgood had been among the first to volunteer and by July, 1917, had been promoted to full lieutenant. In November of that year, he was awarded the Military Cross.

He died, aged 24, in August, 1918, in France.

Private Terrance Fitzsimons, who was serving in the 9th Hampshire Regiment, was commissioned and received training at Cambridge and Hythe. He was sent to the front but was killed in action, aged 20, near

Loos, in April, 1916.

Not all men were killed as a result of direct fighting. Disease and other occurrences contributed to the death of many servicemen.

Private Charles Purchase and Private Edgar Jarman were both taken prisoner during the war and died while in captivity in 1918.

At the end of the war, there were many men who returned home injured and traumatised from their experiences at the front. There were many men who had lost limbs and were helped by an organisation started by Field Marshal Earl Haig in 1921 which became the Royal British Legion. However, those who suffered badly with ‘shell shock’ were kept behind locked doors at institutions such as Graylingwell, where they lived out the remaining decades of their lives.

Some men, due to injuries sustained during war, had their lives shortened because of ongoing health conditions. These included Walter Dew, a local postman, who joined the 13th (Service) Battalion in 1915. He was discharged in 1917 due to ‘sickness’ and, despite treatment at Royal West Sussex Hospital, died of his injuries in 1919.

In Chichester, remembrance of the fallen was marked by the erection of the war memorial, originally in Eastgate Square.

Between the end of the First and the start of the Second World War in 1939, on November 11, at 11am, the two minute silence was observed to the extent where all traffic came to a stop. The then Duke of Richmond also gifted Priory Park to the city as a memorial to the fallen.

Volunteer village shop assistant – Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre

Amberley museum was founded in 1979 by the Southern Industrial History Centre Trust and is dedicated to the industrial heritage of the South East, charting the history of local industry and crafts in this part of Sussex. The village shop is an important aspect of the visitor experience at the museum, located at the start of the 36 acre site, and presented as a post war 1950s style sweet shop and local village shop.

As part of the retail operation at the museum, the shop also plays an important part in raising funds needed for the museum. As a volunteer, your role will be to ensure every visitor has a superb experience and the shop runs smoothly. Experience of working in retail and using an electronic till would be helpful, but is not essential. More importantly, you need to enjoy meeting visitors and working as part of a team.

Young Adult Carer Engagement Volunteer – Carers Support West Sussex Shine is Carers Support West Sussex’s programme for young adult carers aged 18-25. This role would involve working with the Young Adult Carer (YAC) Team and in particular the YAC Champion. To meet and communicate regularly with allocated Young Adult Carers via text, phone, email, 1-2-1 meetings and support groups. You will: signpost and encourage YAC to engage via Carers Support West Sussex (CSWS) social media platforms; alongside CSWS staff, support YAC to identify barriers in achieving aspirational goals, such as employment, education and training; encourage participation through ‘buddying’ in CSWS meetings, groups and events to reduce social isolation; and provide personalised mentoring and befriending services to individual cases as necessary within the agreed boundaries of the role. This role is available to anyone over the age of 18. References and DBS check will be requested.

Second place is just the ticket as Tone Zone swap the rain for Spain FORGET Bognor, Benidorm is where it is for a spot of winter running.

With wind and rains battering the south coast, a team of Tone Zoners headed to the south of Spain to take on the Benidorm 10k.

A total of 16 club members signed up for the event, which was far from a holiday.

First home for the club was Simon Gill, running a time of 35 minutes, closely followed

by Peter Lee, in 37 minutes.

Jack Penfold, who was running a strong race, stopped with a nose bleed halfway before finishing with Danny Mahoney just under 42 minutes.

Chris Gallagher ran a personal best time for 44:14, followed by Nigel Pidgeon, who finished just over the 45 minute mark. Shaun Smart was just a few places behind, along with Marc Annals, who was still carrying an injury from last year's race.

Ian Baley finished just ahead of head coach Keith Hardwell, who had spent his weekend ensuring all runners were hydrated. It seemed to work for him as well, as he crossed the line in a time of 47 minutes.

Carolyn Stapley, Karl Hayes and Glenn Penfold (who was running his first race in two

years) all ran a close race and crossed the line under 50 minutes. Just missing out on that barrier was Neil Strudwick, who made his return to racing after the Chicago Marathon last month.

Kate O’Connor and Neil Pacey rounded off a good weekend for the club, both finishing under 53 minutes.

Tone Zone also claimed second place in the club rankings throughout the race meaning the flight home was a cheery one for the cohort of Bognor-based runners.

Closer to home in Hampshire, over at Staunton Country Park, was the festive frolic, a 4.7 mile lapped course where runners can run any amount of laps they wanted to.

The sun was out but it certainly was a cool one. Michelle Maxim, Lisa Jaycocks-Winslow and Leigh Paige ran two laps of the course.

Maxim completed it in 1:53, with Lisa and Leigh finishing in 2:01 Fellow Tone Zoners Tony Holcombe, Cheryl Laing and Andy Shill all ran nearly 28 miles of the course.

Holcombe and Shill showed great teamwork to help each other around the course, finishing in 5:11, with Laing finishing 10 minutes later.

DARTS: Gary Blackwood (the Legends) was the star performer as he averaged more than 25 points per dart in his side's win over BRSA Ravens in week five of the Friday Benevolent League. Here are the results in full:

TOP trampolinist Sofija Kalnicenko rounded off an excellent season for Bognor's Dragonflyers by scooping gold on the national stage.

With only one international event to go, competitors from the Bognor-based club produced a series of excellent displays at the League One finals in Sheffield.

The high point was a stunning performance from Kalnicenko, who produced her personal best performance of 141.020 over three routines.

This placed her 5.755 marks above her nearest rival, Rhianne Mulligan (14th at British championships - City of Salford) and well ahead of Rhiannon Roberts (10th at British championships).

It rounded off a good fortnight for Kalnicenko, who teamed up with Rosie Budge and Libby Morton to take international team bronze in the 13 to 14-years category at the DWH biannual event the week earlier.

Over a dozen countries participated in the event, some entering their national team.

Kalnicenko also qualified for the individual finals, one of only three British performers to do so and finished a respectable fifth place behind the Swedish, Netherlands and Polish national team and Edgebarrow club.

Elsewhere, Morton and Lucy Hijmans finished fifth at the synchro league finals where they challenged the very best male female and mixed pairs. Morton also placed ninth at the individual League Two finals.

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers have had a sensational season. This tiny club qualified the majority of its competitive performers to regional finals where two-thirds medalled. In total, 15 national medals plus a team international medal has been won.

"With young Manon Bailey making progress on the national and international scene, Izzy Hauxwell expected back on the competition floor and the return of national medallist Anya Johnston to training, Flyers trampoline club are looking forward to a productive 2019."

SHORT MAT BOWLS: In their forth league game against Mannings Heath at Boxgrove, Infinity took the honours and sealed six points.

On mat 1, Robin Armstrong, Pauline Jeffery, Steve Jeffery and Chris Page won 28-7. The score does not reflect what a good game they had.

On mat 2 John Simms, Denise Kirby, Jack Rollings and Charlotte Rollings had a tight game with Mannings Heath in the lead from the beginning, but in the last few ends Infinity came back and went into the 20th end 20 points each.

End 20 saw both teams with a bowl leaning against the Jack thus they went into the last and 21st end still on 20 points each.

Infinity finished the last end scoring 1 point which was all they needed to win.

Pagham boss urges Lions to pounce and take Vase chance

Blues bid for four in a row CHICHESTER RFC have the top six in their sights as their mid-season surge up the table rolls on.

After a poor start to the London South One campaign, Blues have chalked up three victories on the spin.

The latest was a 22-0 home win over bottom side Hove which has lifted Chi up to ninth in the table.

With their early season issues with form well and truly behind them, Blues know that a victory at eighth-placed Cobham tomorrow (2pm) could see them leapfrog their hosts.

If Chi bag a bonus point win and results go their way then they could end the weekend sitting in the top six of the London South One. It would be a remarkable turnaround for Scott Ashley's side, who had won just one of their first eight matches of the campaign.

With a number of influential players now returning to the ranks it looks as though Blues have turned the corner.

The win against Hove was secured after a fast start from the hosts.

Henry Anscombe, who returned to fly half, put a low

kick into Vultures Corner as the Hove defence scrambled Full back Charlie Norton managed to sneak in to touch down before kicking a fine conversion. 7-0 after 12 minutes.

But despite having much of the better of the play, Blues were unable to add to the scoring before the break.

Into the second period and an early penalty extended Chi's lead.

A drive from the pack looked to have extended the score but the officials disagreed. Instead, it took Sam Renwick to scythe through the Hove defence to extend the score to 17-0.

Hove gallantly tried again but their backs lacked the tactical variety to penetrate.

Blues capitalised. From lineout ball Chi backs pressed again and Rhys Thompson scored the third try right of the posts.

Try as they did, Ashley's side were not able to get the fourth score and bag the bonus point.

--Bognor RFC return to Hampshire Premier action tomorrow when they welcome Eastleigh IIs to Hampshire Avenue (2pm). The Purple and Greens are currently third after winning seven of nine games.

PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds is urging his side to stick to the game plan as they look to progress to the last 32 of the FA Vase.

Lions head to Southampton tomorrow to play Sholing in the third round of the national knockout competition (3pm).

A good crowd is expected to follow Pagham on their trip out west as they look to defeat a side who have won all 14 games in the Wessex Premier League this season.

But, even after Pagham lost their unbeaten league record with a 3-0 loss to Eastbourne Town last weekend, hopes are high at Nyetimber Lane that they can spring a surprise.

Simmonds, who manages the team alongside Richie Hellen, said: "We have looked into them and know they are the only team in the country with a 100 per cent record so it will be a tough task.

"I know a couple of lads who play in the Wessex League so they have been giving me reports and we will try and get as much info as we can so that we can go over there with a game plan and see what we can do."

Pagham defeated fellow SCFL Premier side Peacehaven 4-1 in the last round.

Robins rally to record rare win

BOSHAM will be looking to build on a rare positive result after they rallied to complete a come from behind win over Montpelier Villa.

A year ago everything looked rosy for the red shirted side as they were on the way to top-three finish in the SCFL Division Two and lifting the league cup along the way.

But The Robins have struggled so far this season with an early managerial change doing little to change the club's fortunes.

But as the weeks have gone on, their performances have got better with joint managers Tony Hancock and Danny Mullen

starting to get their points across to the players.

It paid off last weekend when the Walton Lane side rallied to wrap up three points against fellow strugglers Villa.

After falling behind in the first half, goals after the break from Max Terry and Jake Lafferty sealed only a third league win of the season for Bosham.

Those three points lifts them up to 12th in the 15 team SCFL Division Two. Tomorrow they head to the outskirts of Brighton to play Rottingdean Village (2pm).

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's surge up the table continues as the Blues look to make it four wins on the bounce away at Southwick tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side have really hit their stride in recent weeks, stringing together a run of positive results.

After a disappointing loss away at Midhurst, Selsey's young side have notched nine points from nine which has seen them climb to fifth place in a competitive division.

The latest victory came last weekend when goals from Tom Jefkins and Lindon Miller (2) sealed a comfortable victory away at Storrington.

The three goals would have pleased Pearce who has said that the failure to convert chances has cost his side in the early stages of the season.

At the other end of the table, fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham remain with their heads above the water.

Steve Bailey's side have a prime opportunity to give themselves some much needed breathing room when they head to Mile Oak tomorrow (3pm).

Sids are currently 13th in the 18 team division, just four points above tomorrow's hosts who are second bottom.

A 2-0 defeat at home to Alfold last week means that Bailey's side have now not won for more than a month, meaning victory tomorrow would taste even sweeter.

City welcome back defensive mainstay CHICHESTER CITY have received a boost in their bid for promotion with the re-signing of influential defender Harry Williams.

After a strong start to the season, Miles Rutherford's side have slightly faltered in recent weeks, which has seen them toppled from the top of the SCFL Premier.

But the addition of Williams, who had been playing for local rivals Pagham, is expected to give City a lift as they look to string together a run of positive results to round off 2018.

The defender has had to wait to make his debut for the club after last week's match at Eastbourne United was called off due to the weather.

That postponement meant Chi have now fallen to eight points behind leaders Horsham

YMCA. But with two games in hand and more than half the season still to play, they know they will have plenty of time to pull back the deficit.

They can start as they mean to go one tomorrow against league newcomers Langney Wanderers at Priory Lane in Eastbourne (3pm).

--Chichester City Ladies return to action on Sunday when they head to Crawley Wasps in the second round of the FA Cup on Sunday (2pm) at Oakwood FC. The Green and White Army have been in excellent form this season and are second in the FA National Southern Premier. But so are Wasps who are top of the National Division One South East, winning all 14 games so far.

Winter is coming - with Rocks keen to freeze out their rivals Next Game

HARLOW TOWN (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes the Rocks can use the winter period to start surging up the Bostik Premier table.

A stop-start autumn has seen the Nyewood Lane side lose much of the momentum generated during those heady summer days with Rocks now sitting seventh.

Injuries have been the main cause of that disruption to results, which has also seen cup exits in the Velocity Trophy, FA Cup and FA Vase to lower league opposition.

Rocks avoided making it a clean sweep of cup exits last weekend when they came from behind to defeat Bostik Division One South East side Three Bridges in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup. But with two important league matches to come in the space of four days at Harlow tomorrow (3pm) and at home to Enfield Town on Tuesday (7.45pm), Pearce knows that his side can use the busy run up to Christmas as a perfect platform to launch a promotion push.

The veteran manager said: "December and January is a time when we can make a move "If we keep people fit and get the two injured players we have out back then there's no reason why we can’t start stringing results together.

"The way results are going though in this league there could be a dozen clubs who are thinking like that so we have to focus and cannot take anything for granted."

Taking sides for granted seems to be a regular thing for Rocks at the moment.

Last weekend, they gave their opponents a head start once again with Three Bridges going in at the break with a 2-0 lead over their higher ranked opponents.

Pearce admitted there were some words exchanged in the dressing room between the management team and the players - with the pep talk seemingly working as strikes from Mason Walsh, Tommy Block and Dan Smith sealing safe passage through to the next round.

Pearce said: "We obviously can’t run away from fact that we re giving teams, particularly those from lower leagues, a head start on us in games. They were more fired up at the start and we just did not match them. We were very disappointed with our first half showing and lucky only to go in two down.

"But full credit to the players for putting into practice what we said to them. We came through it and got the win which was the main thing."

Next up is Harlow Town, a team who are fourth bottom but have won their last two matches. Then it is Enfield, who are eighth but have not won in four.

Rocks will also be boosted by the return of fans' favourite Gary Charman who has resigned from Burgess Hill to cover for injured defenders Corey Heath and Keaton Wood..

Hibs still keen on teen Block TOMMY BLOCK'S hopes of a move to the Scottish Premiership remain alive after the Rocks youngster was invited back on trial at Neil Lennon's Hibernian.

The Easter Road side want another look at the 18-year-old midfielder after he fell ill during a stint with the Edinburgh club last week.

Block trained with the first team under the watchful eye of ex-Celtic manager Lennon and then played in a behind-closed-doors friendly game in which he scored with a header from a corner.

But he missed two days of training due to an upset tummy - so Hibs have invited him back up for another few days in December.

Block said: "I thought I did well initially but then had a stomach bug and was confined to my hotel room. There was no way I could train or play. Hibs were brilliant, though, they really looked after me while I was unwell and helped me get through it.

"I wasn't sure if being unwell during the few days I was there would have a negative impact on my chances of impressing them. But they were brilliant, telling me not to concern myself too much about being ill. I remain hopeful that once again I can impress."

THIS season is really starting to get interesting as we enter the festive period.

I believe where we are come Christmas will be a good indicator as to where we will be towards the end of the season.

If we are lying nicely in the play-offs then I hope we can stay there or improve when we have our full-strength side out.

At the moment, it is terribly difficult for our team to get results but I thought we battled hard in another superb second half against Three Bridges in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup. There is a lot of debate at the moment as to how many players we have out and what a difference this is making.

I agree with the fact that we are struggling defensively.

And we have had more bad luck with Pompey loanee Joe Dandy getting sidelined as well.

But Tommy Block has been doing the best he can at centre back and now he's got a trial with Hibernian! Well done Tommy! I have to say that I’d much rather see you stick around at Nyewood Lane, than move to Scotland though!

Tommy was one of the goalscorers in our recent 3-2 win against Bridges. Since I last saw them play in the county league, they have improved remarkably and provided a real test for our team.

They scored two goals in the first half and we looked lost at sea. I wasn’t sure if we’d get back into the game.

But again, as we have seen on more than one occasion, after the break Bognor came out stronger and we dominated the second half and maybe should have scored more.

I was saying to other fans before kick off that I was surprised Dan Smith started given his requirements with Portsmouth and it being a county cup game.

I thought we would rest more senior players than we did.

But it was a strong side we put out and in the end it paid off.

There has been a lot of debate over our short corner tactics. I have to say I am not a fan.

But after listening to Robbie Blake on the Rocks Radio/TV interview following the recent cup win, I can see why we are doing it.

For me, our biggest threat with corners would have been Corey Heath but with him out, I can understand it.

But I’d like us to vary it up sometimes and maybe drive the ball low into the area and see where it ends up.

You never know, it could bounce off a defender and into the net without even finding a green and white shirt.

I know we haven’t got a Craig Robson or Jason Prior anymore and neither do we have a Ben Johnson to chip them in every week!

But I just think it might throw teams off their game as they are sometimes pre-empting our short corner play.

I'm also getting very excited about a certain event in December - it’s getting closer by the day!

Of course I am talking about the El Classicoast on December 22 away to the Mackerel Men - or is it the Rebels? They can’t seem to make up their mind can they?

Yes, the Worthing game will be interesting and I know everyone in the press box and from speaking to fans we will all be there.

It's always nice beating local rivals. But first we have some tough fixtures coming up, including Harlow, Enfield, Dorking and Kingstonian.

This next month is going to be tough, but I think if we keep this resiliency in our matches then we will have no problem.

I just hope we can start performing better in the first half as well as we know we can in the second.
