Calls to help make city green

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS TO hold a car-free Sunday event once a month within the walls of the city were proposed at Chichester City Council's meeting on Wednesday evening.

Parklands resident Mark Record proposed the idea, which was well received by councillors.

Mr Record explained that Chichester could follow in the footsteps of other European cities, including Paris, which were leading the way in promoting itself by declaring the first Sunday of each month a car-free day.

At the meeting, Mr Record said: "Although cycling in the city can be a mixed experience, by comparison to many other towns and cities in southern England, Chichester provides a veritable paradise for sustainable transport users.

"Also, we are blessed with living in a relatively flat region that naturally encourages cycling. We should exploit Chichester’s benefits for cyclists and pedestrians to promote our city.

"Would it be possible to organise, one Sunday a month when motor vehicle use is minimised/restricted within the city walls? Perhaps between the hours of 6am and 6pm? Essentially a traffic-free day within the walls of the city."

Mr Record proposed his question at the

meeting and said: "This idea could mean that local individuals and families will be persuaded to travel to town without using cars and realise it is a relaxing fun way to spend the day without risk of collision or having to breath toxic exhaust fumes.

"Tourists may see car-free days as a specific reason to visit and explore our city, bringing trade to local shops pubs and restaurants.

Man sentenced for sexual abuse

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SEXUAL abuse of young boys occurring at a children's home in Singleton 30 to 40 years ago has seen the offender sentenced.

John Michael Webber, 78, retired, of Clifton Hill, Brighton, has been sentenced a total of 32 years' imprisonment for the abuse, much of which occurred in the 1970s and 1980s.

Webber was the owner of the long since closed privately-run Old Rectory children's home in Church Road, Singleton, during the period of the offences.

He was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Tuesday, having been convicted the previous Wednesday after a five-week trial, of 26 out of 29 sexual offences, some counts involving multiple incidents, against six boys aged between five and 15.

They were 19 counts of indecent assault, five further serious assault charges, and two of indecency with a child.

Webber was found not guilty of three other sexual offences, one of which related to a seventh boy.

He was found not guilty of three other sexual offences.

The majority of the offences took place within the home but some incidents also happened away from the home, on camping trips to various locations in the UK.

Police emphasise that the premises closed as a children's home in the late 1980s, and that any management or occupants of the address since that time have no connection whatsoever with this case.

Detective Sergeant Karrie Bohanna, of the Sussex Police Complex Abuse Unit, said: "Webber was in a position of power at the home where there were a number of vulnerable children. Don Grasty, 94, of Beach Road, Selsey, had faced 23 sexual offence charges, allegedly committed against six boys.

However, Mr Grasty, who had assisted in the management of the home, died in March this year.

Pupils' excitement as BBC's Any Questions comes to city school THE BBC is coming to Bishop Luffa School in Westgate.

BBC's long-running radio programme 'Any Questions?' will be broadcast live from Bishop Luffa School on Friday, December 14.

The show, hosted by Jonathan Dimbleby, has been running since 1948. The panel is made up of prominent politicians and public figures who are asked questions on current affairs by a live audience.

Staff and students are excited at the prospect of a live recording in their school. Bishop Luffa's 'Tech Team' of students have already met BBC producers and are taking part in preparations for the night. Sixth form students are running a competition

to see which house can get most questions asked on the show.

Tickets are available for staff, students and members of the general public and are allocated on a first come, first served basis, with a maximum of three tickets per applicant.

Admission is by ticket only and doors will open at 6.45pm. All seats must be taken by 7.15pm.

The low-key event was held at 3pm in the south-east corner and was attended by close friends, family, near-by residents and the city's mayor, Cllr Martyn Bell.

Richard Plowman, a member of Friends of Priory Park said at the gathering: "It's a very special day, today, because we are going to plant a commemorative tree for

the 10th Duke of Richmond who was a wonderful man, a great supporter of the city and holder of the Freedom of the city itself.

"He supported many things in the city and was well loved by everyone here. We thought it would be very fitting to have a tree, a cedar of Lebanon.

"It was chosen because, during the great storm of 1987, two cedar of Lebanon's were blown down so it's a very nice to have a decent one here for the future."

The Duke of Richmond, his son Charlie and the Duchess of Richmond had

brought a special spade with them.

The Duke said: "I know my father would be delighted to have you all here.

He was passionate about Chichester, he put a huge amount of time, effort and energy into this city, "We thought we would bring this spade along to plant the tree because it was actually made for the 7th Duke to plant a tree in commemoration of peace on July 9, 1990 in Priory Park. I thought it was very appropriate to use it again."

The three then took it in turns to add soil to the roots, along with the mayor, Richard Plowman and several others.

Speaking afterwards, to the Chichester Post, Mr Record said: "Unlike many other towns and cities along the south coast, Chichester is already well placed to hold a car-free day because it has a history of making favourable town planing decisions.

"There is already a significant area of pedestrianisation within the city centre, so it is now a realistic step to hold a car-free day. I feel pleased Chichester councillors appeared receptive to the idea.

"However, there are pitfalls to avoid.

The recent Velo event sounded like a great idea initially but in practice managed to inconvenience and antagonise may people in the local community. There are lessons to be learnt from the Velo event and I feel it is important that residents are persuaded that a car-free event will be in everyone's benefit."

The mayor of the city, Cllr Martyn Bell, said: "I am on the same page as Mark, not totally but pretty much. I think there are some elements of the Chichester Vision in this in terms

of perhaps having a day where we wouldn't see the traffic.

"I'm very flattered you have bought this question to us, but, at the end of the day, we are a parish council and not the authority for highways."

In another move, Cllr Sarah Sharp, of the Green Party, put forward two motions at the meeting; one to continue to look at ways of reducing single-use plastics in the city and to declare a climate emergency to help clean up the city's air.

Cllr Sharp said at the meeting: "Every council has their role to play.

Single-use plastics have caught the public's imagination and in a way that is an easy thing for us to grasp.

"We can all take our water bottles with us instead of having to buy one and we can get into the habit of refilling our cups. It's easy actions that we can take.

"If everyone in the world lived like we do, with our levels of luxury, we would need 3.49 planets and we don't have them. We have a climate emergency. “We need to do more. We will be affected by this. This is a massive motion and it needs to go to committee.�

` Flats for homeless PLANS have been approved by Chichester District Council's cabinet members to build 21 flats to help homeless and vulnerable people in the district.

At their meeting on Tuesday morning, members supported plans to demolish a property purchased last year in Freeland Close and replace it with up to 21 one-bedroom flats.

Around two and nine families have been living in bed and breakfast at any one time over the past six months.

Cabinet members agreed to support plans for the one-bedroom flats or to have a combination of one, two, three and four-bedroom flats.

District council leader Tony Dignum said: "I think it’s fair to say we’re doing a lot more than most councils to provide accommodation of our own and avoid families possibly being split up in bed-and-breakfast accommodation. This shows our strong commitment to tackling the issues for people who are homeless."

The estimated total cost of the redevelopment is £2,100,000. This does not include the purchase costs of £208,815.

An application a for grant of £510,000 to £765,000 will be submitted to Homes England at the same time as planning is submitted. If these grants are secured they will be payable on completion.

Work is expected to start in November next year.

Council tackles fly tipping and litter

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CABINET members at Chichester District Council have approved a revised Litter and Fly-Tip Action Plan at a cost of around £30,000.

At their meeting on Tuesday morning, Cllr John Connor, cabinet member for environment services, detailed the council's plan which includes several projects to tackle litter and fly-tipping in the district.

One of the projects is to maintain the Green Dog Scheme, which encourages people to pledge their support and become identifiable as green dog walkers who pick up after their own dog, encouraging others to pick up and providing dog bags to others.

The second project is to secure a project officer to deliver a tradesmen publicity project focusing on road litter and fly-tipping.

This project will encourage residents and businesses to support the council in their flight against fly-tipping, including reporting incidents, helping to promote messages and to raise awareness that the council will not tolerate fly-tipping and the penalties that are involved if anyone is caught fly tipping.

They will also work with local DIY stores to help raise awareness of the importance of waste carrier licences – both in terms of making sure tradespeople are aware when they require one if they are removing waste

and making sure residents are aware of the importance of checking the licence when companies take their waste away.

The amount of litter on roads will be highlighted, with drivers being told this is not acceptable and that they will face penalties if caught.

The last project is to continue with litter enforcement. The proposed option is for the council to enter into a threeyear agreement with East Hampshire District Council to offer a litter enforcement service by providing two officers, three days per week, with the inclusion of a flexibility clause to reduce the level of service to two days per week if the numbers of fixed penalty notices issued falls significantly. Also, to ensure the littering project is district-wide, it is proposed to purchase additional patrols of low litter areas.

Cabinet members approved the expenditure of £13,300 funded from reserves to enable the appointment of one part-time project officer for one year and £7,500 funded from reserves to provide resources to support publicity campaigns related to fly-tipping and litter.

It was agreed that £10,000 would be funded from reserves to enable litter enforcement in low littering areas.

The district council's ‘Against Litter’ campaign was recently recognised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations as the best community relations campaign of the year at the South of England and Channel Islands Pride awards, where it won gold.

Judges praised the strong community involvement in the campaign, as well as the reduction in litter.

They also were impressed by the campaign’s clear message – that littering is a crime and will be treated as one – with promotional materials name checking local areas to encourage grassroots support.

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for resident services at the district Council, said: “We are very proud of what the campaign has achieved and we would like to thank our residents and businesses for supporting it.

"We feel that this award recognises all of those who have supported the campaign and helped us to keep the

district looking beautiful.

The campaign aimed to reduce litter and dog fouling across the district and help keep the area looking beautiful.

As part of this, the council established litter enforcement officers who patrol the district, encouraged residents and businesses to ‘adopt an area’ by working with the council to keep the area looking beautiful and introduced the green dog walkers’ scheme.

Since launching the campaign, the council has seen a reduction in the amount of litter around the district, with 164 areas having been adopted by residents, community groups and businesses, with 335 people signing up to the Green Dog Walkers’ scheme.

Council win top loo awards for three toilets in the city

` Police reports OVER the week of Monday, November 19, to Sunday, November 25, there were nine reports of vehicle crime reported in beauty spot car parks.

Location hotspots included Selhurst Park, near Singleton, Hylters Lane, Chilgrove, Adsdean, Hunters Race, West Lavant, and Kennel Hill, Goodwood.

On Tuesday, November 20, in Stocks Lane, East Wittering, a vehicle was broken into and camera equipment stolen. Serial 0282 20/11.

In Kewells Corner, Birdham, on Wednesday, November 21, a van was broken into while parked in a car park. Tools were stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0173 21/11.

On the Wednesday, in St Leodegars Way, Hunston, a van was broken into while parked on a driveway. A number of tools were stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0180 21/11.

In Lavant Road, Chichester, the following day, a van was broken into.

The lock was damaged but nothing stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0097 22/11.

On Friday, November 23, a property was broken into in Duncan Road, Chichester, and clothing stolen.

Serial 0965 23/11.

In Brooks Lane, Bosham, on Saturday, November 24, police received a report of an attempted break-in to a property. Entry was attempted via an open downstairs window, but access was not gained.

Serial 0065 24/11.

Also in Bosham, in Penwarden Way, the same day, there was an attempt break-in to a vehicle. No entry was gained. Serial 0467 24/11.

Food for thought as over three tons of essentials are donated to city's foodbank GENEROUS shoppers donated tons of food to help Chichester residents in need of meals this Christmas.

A procession of people handed over tins and packets of essentials such as soup, nappies, baked beans and pasta and seasonal treats like puddings and biscuits, to the city's district foodbank.

The three-day collection at Tesco in Fishbourne Road East, saw three tons handed over - the most they have ever received.

Chichester District Foodbank's project manager, Joanne Kondabeka, said: "We would like to thank the customers of Tesco Extra in

Chichester for their generous donations of food, Christmas items, toiletries, household items and nappies to help sustain their work of feeding families and individuals in crisis.

"The project relies solely on donations from the community and we really value your support.

We especially want to thank the traveller community who encouraged their families through a Facebook challenge to buy a trolley full of food and donate it to the foodbank.

"Since April this year we have already fed 1,511 people and with the increased demand due to universal credit, the food collected in Tesco will help us feed those facing food insecurity."

Enterprise has review

At a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday morning, councillors were told that there had been a positive review of how the Chichester Enterprise Centre project performed against the original intentions set out in the project initiation document.

The exercise follows practical completion of the development on January 23 this year and the subsequent handover of the management of the centre to Basepoint, the council’s chosen operator, on March 1.

Council leader Tony Dignum said: "The original project objectives have been fully achieved. These included bringing a brownfield site back into active economic use and through that the provision of flexible business accommodation that helps fledgling businesses manage their costs as they grow.

"Added to this, a programme of business development initiatives run

by Basepoint is helping to encourage new businesses within the district and support job creation.

"Now occupied, the centre also generates an important source of revenue income for the council. Indeed, Basepoint offer a guaranteed minimum income of some £2.8million for the lifetime of the management agreement together with an additional profit share.

"Despite some challenging obstacles during construction, including major ground contamination issues, a significant underspend of some £234,000 of the capital budget has been achieved in the delivery of the project."

Due to the underspend, the return on the investment had improved and, at year 5, would be 5.15 per cent of Basepoint’s minimum guaranteed income.

Of the 82 units available at the Enterprise Centre, the number currently occupied is 36, of which nine are workshops. Basepoint say that within the first 12 months of operation they generally anticipate an occupancy level of around 40 per cent.

The Enterprise Centre is currently 44 per cent occupied and with three months to go to the first anniversary of the opening, councillors say its performance is encouraging.

Wellington Grange residents entertained by youth actors RESIDENTS in a Chichester care home were entertained recently by teen actors with a sneak preview of action from classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty.

Ten cast members from Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s Christmas production walked over to nearby Wellington Grange to sing and act in an intimate performance in the residents’ lounge.

The visit was the latest in an ongoing partnership between the theatre and the Colten Care home, designed to bring the joy of live drama directly to residents.

Kay Vevers, companionship team leader at Wellington Grange, said: "When these young actors came in, they looked quite shy and quiet like teenagers sometimes do, but my goodness, when they started to sing they had such a burst of enthusiasm and such lovely strong voices.

"The residents were thrilled

and found it all very exciting and enchanting."

After their show, the visitors held a question and answer session talking about how they got into acting and singing.

One resident said: “I used to sing in choirs and act in shows when I was younger. I was interested to hear how things have changed since then and how young actors these days juggle their performances with school work.

The whole visit was fantastic and they came over as so professional.”

In other inter-generational activities, Wellington Grange is this month welcoming carol-singing visits from children at West Dean Primary School and Oakwood School. Toddlers from Co-op Nursery are also coming in for an afternoon tea date.

` Fire service cuts PROPOSALS to cut £600,000 from the West Sussex Fire Service operations budget have been described as ‘unsustainable and unsafe’ by the Fire Brigades Union.

As West Sussex County Council attempts to save £145m by 2021, services such as electric blanket testing, Safe Drive Stay Alive courses and FireBreak courses are all at risk.

A report to the environment, communities and fire select committee, was due to have met yesterday (Thursday) but this has now been delayed.

They include a £400,000 reduction in intervention and prevention activities, such as the electric blanket testing, and £200,000 from a review and restructure of the technical rescue unit.

As well as the £600,000, it is proposed that another £100,000 be found from the public protection budget, which would include the loss of the Duke of Cornwall courses.

These courses help to educate and train young people to help out before, during and after a crisis.

With less and less funding coming from central government, the county council has had little choice but to repeatedly tighten its belt in order to balance its budget year after year – something it is legally required to do.

Staff are due to be consulted on the plans between December 13 and January 10.

Every dog has their day to meet and greet Santa Claus

Hundreds of people helped raise thousands of pounds for Mount Noddy's annual Santa in a Camper event.

The festive fun pulled in more than 500 visitors, and raised around £3,508 for all the dogs and cats awaiting their new homes at the RSPCA centre in Eartham.

Business and income generation manager Clare Palmer said: “Despite the rain and having to rework the planned layout at the 11th hour to accommodate everyone inside, Santa in a Camper and Christmas fayre went ahead.

"Santa welcomed many dogs and cats into his Campervan grotto, once again fully supported by local VW club, The Dirty Low Down Dubbers.

"We raised over £3,000 on the day, which helps rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs and cats on behalf of the RSPCA and the public at this self-funded branch.

"We do this event to continue

to raise awareness and funds to support the animal centre, and are very grateful to all the people who supported the event in the rain, and all our traders and volunteers. Thank you!"

A band, Liquid Logic, and DJ Peter Phillips entertained people throughout the day.

There were plenty of stands, including Arun Vets, Pancake and Waffle Hut, Adies Baps, Radarlove, Splatter Ink Art, LuvSweeties, Brent Lodge, Cats Protection, WADARS,

Dogs Trust, The Edward Foundation and many other local traders providing refreshments and selling goodies on their market stalls.

Anna Rogers from local business, Luv Sweeties, said: "We had an amazing time at this year's Santa in a Camper, great

atmosphere, lots of smiling faces.

"We were honoured to attend again this year and support Clare and her dedicated team with their great fundraising event.

"Big thanks to them for all the effort and hard work that goes into planning the event."

Newly restored roof is revealed at cathedral and it's no longer green

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER Cathedral's iconic green roof is being replaced piece by piece with a grey one.

Since January, the entire eastern end of the building has been shrouded in scaffolding and now the first phase of the £5.8 million roof restoration project is complete.

A new, historically authentic, lead roof is replacing the damaged copper roof above the Quire. The scaffolding was moved this week to the North and South Transepts where phase two of the project continues.

A huge, £3.8 million has been raised to support the restoration, with a further £2 million still needed.

Working by hand and using techniques similar to those used by the original craftsmen in the 13th century, specialists have meticulously repaired, restored and recovered the Quire roof.

Battling snow, howling gales - and then a heatwave - work has seen decaying medieval timbers repaired using locally sourced Sussex oak, and 27 tonnes of English lead lifted on to the roof. A total of 360 individual panels of lead, each weighing 75kg (nearly 12 stone), have all been secured by hand.

The cathedral’s roof is of national importance and extremely rare. Beneath the roof covering lies much of the 13th century medieval roof structure, described by the renowned craftsman Cecil Hewitt as one of the ‘most important roofs in the kingdom’. Dame

Patricia Routledge, Roof Appeal patron said: ‘This is a very important appeal because it concerns everybody in the wider community. It’s our history, it’s our heritage and it’s our meeting place’.

The entire roof project includes the Quire, South Transept, North Transept and Nave roofs, covering 932m2 - and is estimated to cost £5.8 million. Having completed the first phase of this major project, work will commence on the second phase, the North and South Transepts, in the new year.

The Dean of Chichester, the Very Rev Stephen Waine, said: "We've got a really good team working on this project and so the progress has been absolutely fantastic and we are delighted to be where we are today.

"The green roof is in a sense iconic and when you look down at the cathedral from the South Downs it's once of the things you notice about this cathedral.

"The roof has only been green since the late 1940s at the end of the Second World War when the roof was replaced with copper because there was a shortage of lead. But up until then, the roof had always been grey, it had always been lead.

"Any support that the Chichester Post readers feel they can give to the fundraising campaign for the sake of preserving the cathedral for future generations would be most gratefully received."

Chichester Cathedral receives no automatic statutory funding and relies wholly on donations, grants and selfgenerated income. The cathedral’s Restoration & Development Trust raised

a starting fund (which included a grant from the World War One Centenary Cathedral’s Repair Fund) before launching a public appeal earlier this year.

As a result of the generosity of individuals and grant-making trusts including a recent significant £300,000 grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation - the first phase has been completed.

Appeal chairman Daniel Hodson said: "The generosity of so many individuals and organisations confirms that Chichester Cathedral is a much-loved landmark. £3.8 million has now been raised for the first two phases of this vital project. However, we have a further £2 million still to raise and we must continue with our fundraising effort to ensure 350,000 visitors can continue to come to Chichester each year to explore and be inspired."

Chichester Cathedral’s roof was originally covered using lead but replaced with copper in the late 1940s, after World War Two, when there was a shortage of lead. The technical limits of copper were not fully known at the time and the copper was a cause for concern within a decade of its installation.

Lighter than lead, copper panels are lifted by coastal winds causing cracks to appear and loosening the panels. Lead is used on prestigious royal and religious buildings throughout the country and brings a longevity that far surpasses copper. Once completed, the lead roof will return the cathedral to how it used to look.

` Council tax CHICHESTER City Council has increased council tax at almost double the rate of inflation.

The city council has confirmed its budget for 2019/2020 to be £782,530.

They are asking Band D properties in the parish to pay an extra 5.47 per cent on the precept. The payment will rise to £52.48, an increase of 5p per week.

Cllr Tony Dignum said: "There have been adverse circumstances to plan for in 2018/19, including the budgeted loss of income from the Butter Market of £10,000, the loss of a Chichester District Council grant of £14,029 and increased staff costs of £13,810 (around five per cent, largely due to national staff awards and far in excess of the one per cent awards in earlier years).

"These three items alone account for our need for the 5p a week increase. I was determined there should be no cuts in our services and indeed an increase to allow the City Rangers still to deploy in the city precinct."

` City cycle racks CHICHESTER City Council is allocating £32,500 to replace over 200 cycle racks in the city. The new stainless steel "Sheffield"-style racks will replace 182 cycle racks and 20 will be replaced with stainless steel circular style racks, with additional costs funded by Chichester BID. All councillors agreed to the recommendation with the exception of Cllr Tony French and Cllr Sarah Sharp, who said she felt she was unable to justify the cost when the pavements were in poor condition.

Etsy Made Local is a national event with 54 cities from coast to coast celebrating the makers, designers and collectors that make up the creative community selling on Etsy.com, the online marketplace for handmade and vintage goods, and encouraging people to look locally for this year’s Christmas gifting.

Organised by the Etsy Makers Chichester team, Etsy Made Local Chichester saw local makers and designers selling unique handmade gifts.

More than 18 local Etsy sellers were selling at Etsy Made Local Chichester market throughout the weekend, with products ranging from beard balm to hand printed art.

The city's MP, Mrs Gillian Keegan, visited the event. She said: "It was great to visit Drapers Yard to support the wonderfully eclectic mix of small businesses on small business Saturday.

"This weekend was special as they hosted an Etsy Christmas fair, which featured even more creative and handcrafted goods which are normally sold on the Etsy website.

"The Yard is a fantastic enterprise supporting the development of micro and small businesses by providing space on short-term agreements even offering day by day stall space for new businesses to test their products on the market.

"There is a great atmosphere of

community with businesses in posh sheds and even a small barista van, selling a variety of different artisan products and services.

"This is exactly the type of local business growth we need to keep our high street bustling. I would definitely recommend Drapers Yard as a lovely place to visit, especially with Christmas around the corner."

"Nice to see the mulled wine and mince pies offered to customers and visitors for free and which I feel was a very good gesture."

Members of the public have begun to skate in the icy wonderland, created by S3K limited.

The Duke of Richmond officially opened the rink on Friday, which saw many people having a look around the temporary structure.

The ice rink has been the subject of controversy over the past few weeks with residents in the city saying Priory Park is not the right location for a number of reasons including damage to the grass and noise.

Despite the issues, Edward White, who is running the festive attraction, has worked with Sussex Police to adhere to specific conditions regarding age appropriate wristbands and serving of alcoholic beverages.

At Chichester's District Council's alcohol and entertainment subcommittee, Mr White also agreed to delay the serving of alcohol until 11.30am every day, including Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

"I think there is a huge amount of support from the people who want to see it here and there is a minority of people who don't want to see it here, but the park was given to the people of Chichester to enjoy so I think it fits perfectly and that is why I continued the battle.

"This is a long-term project but the location is not fixed. There is other things to discuss, not just the residents but what might work best for us. My interest is to make people happy and enjoy it, make friends and not enemies."

COUNTY local committees (CLCs) are being reviewed by West Sussex County Council after May's local elections.

CLCs are used to involve residents in decision-making for their area, meeting three times a year to discuss everything from potholes and libraries to children’s services and fire services.

In 2016, it was decided to cut the number of CLCs from 14 to 11, saving £23,400. A working group was set up in June to review the impact of the changes.

The group’s report, put before a meeting of the governance committee, included the possibility of reducing the number again, from 11 to seven, to line up with the county’s district and borough councils.

The report also included feedback from nine of the area’s county councillors, along with parish and district councils.

The responses showed that the loss of one of the three Mid Sussex CLCs had not gone down particularly well.

With larger agendas to cover, meetings were longer, with some passing 10pm.

There was concern that the interests of the area’s villages were losing out as meetings were ‘dominated’ by issues involving Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath.

Another concern centred around how well business was covered during long meetings.

The worry was shared by Bill Acraman (Con, Worth Forest), who said there was ‘too much business in too wide an area’.

` Cycle path pledge A SENIOR councillor has pledged mistakes made when a coastal cycle path from Bognor Regis was created will not be repeated.

The 4.5km cycle path opened last August at a cost of just over £2m £1.2m more than originally budgeted.

Cllr Roger Elkins, who leads West Sussex County Council's highways and infrastructure work, said the problems which arose with the building of the new route between Flansham and Climping should be avoided in future.

He has told the council's environment, communities and fire select committee he agreed with its findings after an investigation of the problems which occurred and confirmed they were being implemented on highway schemes.

"The corporate communications team is fully integrated within the project teams to ensure that messages during construction of highways schemes are relayed to the stakeholder and community in an appropriate and timely manner," he said.

"The director of highways and transport (Matt Davey) is working to ensure the governance which has been put in place (which includes ensuring teams submitting financial bids for external funding engage fully with the project delivery team, through the submission of business cases to the highways capital hub) is functioning as it should be, reducing the risk of the same issues arising again."

The letter of assurance from Cllr Elkins was one of the three steps agreed by the committee after a review of the matter.

Student group help drum out domestic abuse

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SMALL but dedicated band of Chichester College students and staff defied the rain on Tuesday last week to help ‘drum out abuse’.

The group came together for a special march, organised to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the work of Sussexbased charity RISE, which supports people affected by domestic abuse.

Forced inside by driving rain and freezing temperatures, they marched around the college campus, making noise and shouting ‘At Chichester College, we say no! Domestic abuse has got to go’.

Shelagh Legrave, chief executive of the Chichester College Group, was among those banging pots and pans.

She said: “Domestic abuse is something we all need to take seriously, and it’s important we show our support for organisations such as RISE. “It was a shame the weather worked against us for our college march, but it was still heartening to see students and staff supporting us and making a lot of noise to help raise awareness.

“We have a number of activities planned throughout the year, aimed at raising money as well as awareness

for RISE – which is our main charity for this academic year - and I hope the community will get behind our fundraising efforts as well!”

The ‘drum out abuse march’ was inspired by the 18th century practice of ‘rough music’ – when villagers would surround the house of a known abuser and bang pots and pans to shame them into change.

It was first RISE event organised at the college and is part of the 16-day action campaign ‘Activism Against GenderBased Violence’.

Staff and students were joined by representatives from the charity, including fundraising manager KellyMarie Blundell.

She said: "It is great to have Chichester College support for a vital issue, and to see students getting involved to put an end to domestic abuse.

"So often, abusive relationships start when people are young, so this is a great opportunity to teach young people about the importance of healthy and safe relationships; as one of the placards says, abuse is not love."

It’s estimated that one in three women in the world are affected by domestic abuse, with one in four impacted in Britain.

Snowdrop kids play at Base

The children enjoyed an amazing session at the site, riding scooters and being in wheelchairs on the slopes.

Sussex Snowdrop trust ambassador Jess Breach, a Women’s England Rugby player from Chichester, also joined in the fun.

Cllr Sandra Daniells, from Bognor Regis Town Council, who attended the session, said: "It was a really lovely event to be involved with. The children had a great time on the equipment and had lots of coaching from the professionals and Jess Breach.

"The Base is a great asset to Bognor Regis and it was great to see the children having fun."

Pro riders, including Jamie Addison, who is second in the UK, together with Kai Laughton, Luke Potter and Brad Connors, put on an excellent display of their skills.

Di Levantine, co-founder and chairman of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, said: "It was such a delight to see the Snowdrop children enjoying the freedom of The Base.

"These children have to cope with many challenges associated with a life-threatening or terminal illness. The staff here at The Base have been brilliant at making this visit so special.

"These children are inspirational and we are so proud that we, at the trust, can make a difference to their lives through our incredible nurses and counsellor."

` Budget shortfall WEST Sussex County Council’s budget shortfall for 2019/20 has risen from £8.3m to £10.2m since September.

The rise has been blamed in part on the council removing a number of planned savings, which Jeremy Hunt, cabinet member for finance, said ‘realistically we won’t achieve’.

This included the decision to extend housing-related support contracts for charities such as Crawley Open House and the Southdown’s Homelessness Prevention Partnership, to September, 2019, rather than cutting them in April.

Assuming a 4.99 per cent rise in council tax in 2019/20, and 1.9 per cent each year until 2022/23, alongside planned savings of £25.2m, the total shortfall for the next four years stands at £66.3m.

The gap was previously reported as being £52.9m.

At a meeting of the performance and finance select committee last Thursday, members were told that the gap was ‘significant’ and ‘far from ideal’ but showed the difficulties faced when trying to balance a reduction in government funding with an increase in demand for services.

Work is ongoing to close the gap and balance the council’s budget by February 15 – something it is legally required to do.

West Sussex is in line for a share of a number of one-off grants announced by the government in October but has yet to receive firm information about the amounts.

They include £475m in capital funding for schools, and £650m for adult social care.

Mr Hunt told members that, as the grants would be a one-time deal, the council ‘cannot obviously make any long-term plans’.

Social media idea to help combat isolation

Great support is backed by trust LIFE is looking Gr8 for support workers at the Aldingbourne Trust.

Seven members of its staff helped to found the movement 18 months ago.

More of those at the trust's support living premises of Milton Lodge in Bognor Regis have signed up recently as Gr8's work has spread nationwide.

A trust spokesman said: "Gr8 is not like any other resource out there. It's for support workers and by support workers.

"It's fun, interactive and encourages us all to be the very best we can be.

"It's current and it's about what is important to support workers and the people they support right now."

"It enables support workers to ask those questions they may not do

otherwise, discuss the things that concern them they may not feel comfortable doing elsewhere and to draw on the experience of others."

The Gr8 support movement was set up by Paradigm learning disability training and development agency.

It arose from a longstanding wish to do something to help support workers and to try to promote the positive side of support work.

The network connects support workers across the country to share ideas, challenges, stories and best practice.

The trust was one of the 21 organisations nationally which signed up to Gr8 when it started in May, 2017.

AN INITIATIVE encouraging elderly people to use social media so they can feel more involved in their community has been launched by the University of Chichester.

The project was developed by students to help prevent isolation among older residents in West Sussex through the use of new technologies.

Members of the Bognor Regis Hotham Park Heritage Trust were invited to join a pilot study, which taught basic smartphone and tablet use, as well as how to take photos and use Facebook.

Postgraduate student Nicholas Jenner, of the MSc degree in Digital Marketing at the University’s Business School, developed the initiative as part of his dissertation.

He said: “The response from everyone has been extremely positive. When we started the sessions, I asked the group to turn on a phone, take a photo, and then send it as an attachment in an email – and only two were able to do it.

“It’s taken just three classes for those involved to feel much more confident on their phones and safer online.”

The pilot sessions, attended by 15 trust members, were hosted in the university’s new Tech Park, located in Bognor Regis.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust member Rosemary Warren said she hoped to learn how to use Facebook to communicate

more often with her family.

She added: “There is a need for classes like this, and the students have been extremely patient and helpful.

“It’s particularly useful for the trust as we want to build our own Facebook

page to publicise our events and more involvement from people in community.”

also launched new Grace Church sites in Midhurst and in Havant. We are excited to have taken possession this year of the former Ambulance Station in Terminus Road – now called the Grace Centre! We see this as a facility to serve the community, so as well as meeting there on a Sunday morning, there will be many activities going on throughout the week.

By Alicia Denny GRACE CHURCH is a young and vibrant church with a vision to make a difference in a large area centred on Chichester and reaching from the South Downs to the sea.

It is a multi-site church with one leadership and vision, with Sunday meetings held in four locations: Chichester, Bognor Regis, Midhurst and Havant.

To find out more about how the church has grown and plans for its future, we asked its Lead Elder, David Thompson to answer a few questions:

How and when did Grace Church come to the Chichester and Bognor Regis area?

Grace Church met publicly for the first time in June, 2006. From small beginnings with a handful of people meeting at Oving Jubilee Village Hall, the church has continued to grow to over 400 people. By 2013 we were already having an impact on both Chichester and Bognor Regis, but all our Sunday services and other church activities happened in the old Grace Centre at the far end of Terminus Road. When that site was redeveloped into the Chichester Enterprise Gateway, it made sense to begin meeting in Bognor Regis as well as in Chichester.

This move to Bognor Regis has enabled us to serve that community much more effectively. Over the last five years we have started the popular Little Bears toddler group and become a CAP Life Skills Centre. We have continued to grow and are now moving our Sunday venue to South Way Primary School so we can fit more people in.

In Chichester we currently meet at Chichester High School, Kingsham Road at 11am each Sunday morning. However, in 2019 we will be opening our new Grace Centre in Terminus Road.

In Bognor Regis, from December 16, we will be meeting at South Way Primary School in North Bersted at 10am each Sunday (with the exception of our carol service on December 23, which will start at 3.30pm).

In Midhurst we meet weekly at Midhurst Rother College, North Street, and in Havant we meet at Warblington School, Southleigh Road. Each of these meetings start at 10am.

When many other churches are struggling to gain and keep worshippers, can you explain the success of Grace Church?

Despite reports to the contrary the Christian church is thriving around the world and the UK is no different. Grace Church, like many churches around the UK, is on a mission to make Jesus Christ known today. The way we do this is by being highly relational both with members of our congregation, and

also with the wider community. The word Grace means receiving something that we didn’t earn and don’t deserve. The Christian message is that God has shown his grace to us by sending Jesus. Therefore, we love to demonstrate grace to our community through acts of kindness. For example, we regularly hold community events such as fun days, BBQs and this year’s successful ‘Screen on the Green’ open air cinema event. I guess people often ask why we are doing these things and that is an opportunity to tell them about God’s unconditional love. We also run Alpha Courses for people who want to find out more. We find that there is a real hunger in our society for friendship and a feeling of belonging. Therefore, we work hard to make sure that church is not just about turning up to a service, but about building relationships and being part of a community. Once people come, they don’t want to leave!

Do you have plans to expand any further?

We launched our Havant site during 2018, so it is exciting to see this becoming established in the year ahead. We have no immediate plans to add more sites, but there are always opportunities to expand into new ways of serving the community. We are looking forward to being able to run groups, courses and events in our new Grace Centre.

Are the meetings open to all ages and will people find a warm welcome?

Absolutely! There is a huge diversity of people at Grace Church, including all ages.

The Enormous Room, from Stopgap Dance Company, returns to the stage at Chichester Festival Theatre from Thursday, December 13, to Saturday, December 15, following its London launch at the Sadler’s Wells.

Their latest epic production features the infamous and influential David Toole, a gripping disabled performer, who, alongside Stopgap’s rising star, Hannah Sampson, play a father and daughter living through their own, very different experiences of grief.

Combining exquisite detail in movement with evocative text, music and design, The Enormous Room takes the audience somewhere in between this world and the next. It contains some spectacular heartfelt dance from a diverse and talented cast of dancers.

Dave’s wife, Jackie, has died, but he still sees her everywhere.

David Toole performs the role of Dave, adding to a distinguished career that includes a prominent solo in the 2012 Paralympic opening ceremony

and the landmark 2004 film from DV8, The Cost Of Living. Sam is played by Hannah Sampson, a young dancer with Down’s syndrome who has received over 10 years of professional training with Stopgap Dance Company.

The interactions between David Toole and Sampson demonstrate their onstage chemistry, which has been evident since initial rehearsals and workshops of this production.

David and Hannah are joined by non-disabled dancers Amy Butler (the rehearsal director of Chotto Desh by Akram Khan) and Hannah Rotchell or Elia Lopez (Hannah for Cambridge, Bristol and Chichester shows, and Elia for Chester and Leeds shows), who take the roles of Jackie as Sam’s mother and Dave’s wife respectively.

Lucy Bennett, Stopgap’s artistic director and choreographer for The Enormous Room, chose to have two performers play Jackie to illustrate the subjective nature of memory. The Cambodian wheelchair dancer Nadenh Poan plays Chock, a Puck-like presence who orchestrates the collision between this world and the next. Christian Brinklow from Great Yarmouth plays the role of Tom, who offers his friend, Sam, a chance to escape sadness.

Thoughtful, moving and uplifting, The Enormous Room is a show about saying goodbye and moving on.

THIS year, Peter Pan is getting ready to fly into the New Theatre Royal as it stages its biggest Christmas Season yet.

The show, which will run from Thursday, December 13 to Monday, December 31, stars New Theatre Royal favourite, Timothy Lucas, who wowed audiences as Frederick in last year’s hit production of Beauty and the Beast.

Timothy will play Captain Hook and joins the production straight from the UK tour of Cilla the Musical.

Speaking of his return to Portsmouth, Timothy said: “I can’t wait to bring this iconic story to the stage of the beautiful New Theatre Royal. The script, the designs, the cast all look set to be stunning.”

Also starring are Hannah McIver as Wendy, Samuel Bailey as Peter, and musical and stand-up artist Ariane Barnes as Lily, who joins from Showstoppers The Improvised Musical.

Speaking about playing the part of Wendy, Hannah said: “There’s a bit of

Wendy, Peter and Hook in all of us, in how we come to terms with growing up.

Audiences are in for a treat.”

Joining them will be musical theatre actors Yasmine Gazzal as Tinker Bell, Joshua Crowther as Smee, Molly Cattanach as Mrs Darling, Rebecca Frew as Starkey, Liam Glyd as Neptune and Harry Robinson as Blackbeard.

The production is led by one of the UK’s leading Christmas show writers, Scott Ramsay, who is also director of the New Theatre Royal.

“It’s going to be a hugely magical and stirring show, for audiences of all ages,"

he said.

"We’ve secured a richly diverse and talented cast to bring this evocative tale to life, and for audiences to identify with.

As well as our wonderful professional cast, we’re also weaving in young performers from the local area to play the Darling brothers and Lost Boys.”

Peter Pan is presented by arrangement with the Great Ormond Street Children’s Charity.

Enchanting ice rink in city's special park

Cod chips in for a bubbly treat Cecile surprised the audience by asserting the best pairing for Champagne is fish and chips

By Martin Lury martin.lury@me.com CHAMPAGNE Cécile was back in town last week to give her pre-Yuletide address at the M&S trimestral wine-tasting event in downtown Chichester.

Cécile Bergart is like Bacchus reincarnated, but oozing Gallic charm and wit accompanied by a touch of sauce to boot! True to form, she began by talking Champagne in the shape of a Louis Vertay Brut NV priced at just £20.

Soft creamy mousse is a distinctive feature of this elegant, pleasingly rounded Champagne made from the classic blend of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay with red berry and peach flavours to the fore.

In terms of food pairings, Cécile proceeded to explain that bubbles go with all extremes and pair well with

smoked salmon, crisps, all pastries, mini-quiches and sausage rolls, but surprised the audience by asserting that the best pairing for Champagne is that quintessentially English dish of fish and chips - quelle surprise!

At this juncture, M&S’s wine guru Ranjit was able to announce that a twenty-five per cent off six bottles or more offer at M& S would be available until December 4, so this bubbly could just cost three fivers!

We next sampled a Rabl Grüner Veltliner Kamptal of Austrian provenance priced at £9.50, an alternative to Sauvignon Blanc with refreshing wake-up acidity and one to pair with goat’s cheese.

A Barossa Chardonnay from South Australia proved to be eminently drinkable on its own, being a New World Chardonnay and lightly oaked with a hint of creaminess with lower acidity and more volume of flavour and a good pair to Christmas turkey or seafood and priced at ten pounds - crisp and fruity

and very much to my taste!

As we moved on to reds, a Le Vieux Grès Côtes Du Rhône Villages priced at £12 and one to decant proved to be savoury and herby and one to pair with Lincolnshire sausages - hey bangers and mash!

Next a Bordeaux blend of the three most common varieties in the form of a Kendal Lodge Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the prized Stellenbosch area of South Africa priced at a tenner had quality velvety tannins, was delightfully smooth and would pair well with any red meat roast.

The pièce de résistance, nonetheless , was a half-bottle of 2012 L’Or du Ciron Sauternes which was delectably refined and would ideally complement Wensleydale cheese, Roquefort or Foie Gras and priced at £12 50, a must for your Christmas hamper.

Main dish of the week Slow cooker pork shoulder Ingredients: • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1½kg piece pork shoulder • 250ml white wine • 250ml chicken stock • 4 bay leaves • 2 sprigs of rosemary • 1 tsp black peppercorns • 1 garlic bulb Method: 1. Remove the fat from the pork shoulder (you can get your butcher to do this bit for you).

Season the pork with salt and

pepper then heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium to high heat. Brown the pork shoulder on all sides then transfer to a slow cooker. Add all the other ingredients, then cook on low for 6-8 hours until the meat pulls apart when pressed with two forks.

2. Remove the meat, place on a plate and shred it with two forks. Remove the herbs from the sauce and squeeze the garlic cloves out of their skins back into the pot. Put the meat back into its sauce for wonderfully tender and moist slow cooker pork. Serve as an alternative to your Sunday roast with roasted new potatoes, or with a big green salad, mustard and warmed baguettes.

Dessert of the week Apple Pie Ingredients: • 225g plain flour • 140g butter or margarine • 3 large cooking apples • 2 tbsp honey • Pinch of cinnamon • Pinch of mixed spice • 1 egg, beaten • Crème fraîche, vanilla ice cream or natural yogurt, to serve Method: 1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large mixing bowl and add the butter or margarine. Using your fingers, mix together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

2. Add about 3 tbsp cold water – 1 tbsp at a time – to bind the mixture into a ball. Then wrap it in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge while you prepare the apples, or for 30 mins if you have time.

3. While the pastry is chilling, core the apples, then cut into even-sized chunks so they all cook in the same amount of time. Put the apples into the pie dish, drizzle over the honey and add the cinnamon, mixed spice and about 2 tbsp water.

4. Roll out the pastry on a floured work surface until it is large enough to cover the pie dish.

Using the rolling pin, carefully lift the pastry and lay it over the top of the apple mixture.

Carefully trim off the excess pastry (this can be rerolled and cut into shapes to decorate the pie crust if you like) and press the pastry edges onto the dish to create a seal.

5. Make a small cut in the pastry so that the air can escape during cooking, then brush with beaten egg to glaze.

6. Bake the pie in the oven for 20-30 mins until the pastry is golden and sandy in appearance and the apple filling is bubbling and hot. Serve while still warm with crème fraîche, ice cream or natural yogurt.

Community News & Views JOIN SANTA in St Wilfrid’s Hospice's Guinness World Records record attempt of the world's largest street dance lesson!

At 11am on Sunday, December 16, in Priory Park Chichester, #teamwilf is calling on people and their dancing shoes to help set the new world record with 400 people taking part in a full lesson in how to street dance.

There will be a professional teacher, Natalie Temple of Fit Joy, leading people through the moves step by step, and then the hundreds who gather will all attempt to perform the dance together in their Santa hats.

Before and after the attempt visitors can play in team snowball dodgeball games, listen to story time with Santa inside the Guildhall, and explore the park on an elf hunt. There will also be seasonal refreshments, and Mrs Claus’ bake stand.

My PT Hub have sponsored Santa in the Park. Phil Carr, chief executive, said: "We hope this event inspires everyone to get involved, get fit and support a great local charity at the same time!"

Alison Moorey, chief executive of the hospice, said: "Santa in the Park is one of our most ambitious events to date, as we look to our local community to help break a Guinness World Record with a Santa-themed street dance!

RESIDENTS living in Chichester’s rural village of Hunston gathered at the village hall on Wednesday last week, to share their views about Chichester District’s Council’s plans to increase the village’s housing by 35 per cent.

At the meeting, Hunston Parish Council chairman Joan Foster explained the background to the new housing allocation for Hunston, giving details of all meetings and communications, to the 120 residents who attended.

Joan said: "We have met with the district council several times over the past few months to discuss future housing development. We understand new housing is required.

However, the goal posts have constantly changed and detailed plans given to the council by developers as far back as July, 2018, were only received by the parish council at the 11th hour."

Residents were advised they had choices on how to proceed, object and protest or pull together and use the neighbourhood plan process to try to maintain Hunston as a much loved, close, rural community.

While feelings ran high among residents, Hunston villagers overwhelmingly decided to come together to create a neighbourhood plan for the future of the village.

Cllr Jamie Fitzjohn, from West Sussex County Council, and district councillor Tricia Tull were present at the meeting to show their support for Hunston villagers to have their say in how the village develops and transforms in the coming years.

Cllr Fitzjohn said: "I was incredibly proud and impressed by the residents of Hunston at the meeting. They were clearly angered by their treatment thus far by the district council.

"However, they have decided to pull together to channel that anger into something constructive and positive for Hunston.

They have my absolute backing and support on this matter.

Residents already cope with living on the fourth busiest B road in the country and being expected to cope with a possibility of up to 500 more cars on the road as a result of development within their village is not acceptable. It’s certainly not acceptable when the infrastructure is not there to support such development.”

THANKS to the local community, over the past few months St Wilfrid’s Hospice has made incredible progress towards its target to build a new hospice in Bosham.

Earlier this month, The F G Woodger Trust confirmed a further grant, bringing their overall donation to the DreamBuilding appeal to an amazing £1million. Soon after, everyone at the hospice welcomed news that the trustees of The H. B. Allen Charitable Trust had chosen to award a grant of £500,000 to the appeal, one of the trust’s final grants as it winds up this year.

Chief executive Alison Moorey said: "We are incredibly grateful to the Trustees of both The F G Woodger Trust and The H. B. Allen Charitable Trust for their overwhelming generosity.

"These grants have made a significant contribution to our appeal and brought our remaining fundraising target to just under £1 million."

THE CHANTRY in Chichester is going the extra mile to spread festive cheer to one and all this holiday season.

The pub is partnering with Love Your Hospital and St Richard's Hospital to collect gifts for hospital patients of all ages, to be delivered on December 14.

The hospice launched its fundraising appeal DreamBuilding – in 2017 and now has just four months to raise the final £954,000.

SELFISH drivers have been criticised at the start of the police's Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-drivers.

A total of 26 arrests were made in the first 48 hours of the campaign. Chief Inspector Andy Gooch, of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, which runs the initiative, said: “To have made so many arrests in such a short space of time – just days after we publicised our messaging around the risks of drink and drug-driving – is quite unbelievable.

“Driving under the influence of drink or drugs is stupid, it’s selfish and it’s downright shameful, and anyone caught and convicted will be held accountable for their actions.

"Not only can you expect a lengthy ban, a hefty fine and possibly a prison sentence, you’ll also get a criminal record, which could affect your job, your future insurance costs and your travel prospects.

"Worse still, you could kill yourself or someone else – last year in Sussex 13 people died in collisions which involved a drinkdriver. Is it really worth it? We can assure you it’s not.”

The 26 arrests were made in Sussex last weekend and further statistics will be published as the campaign continues until its conclusion on January 1.

In line with previous campaigns, police will also publish details of those convicted, including their name, age, address and occupation.

Chief Insp Gooch added: “While this is a dedicated campaign which occurs twice a year during peak periods – at Christmas and in the summer – we will still respond to reports of drink and drug-drivers as part of our routine policing 365 days a year.”

He urged drivers who were going to consume drink or drugs to plan ahead – walk home, book a taxi, take public transport or get a lift with someone sober.

No-one should get into a vehicle with a person they know is over the limit.

Anyone planning to drive after ‘just a couple’ was also more than likely to be over the legal limit. They should also be mindful of the amount of time it took for substances to leave their body.

Those who drive under the influence of drink or drugs potentially risk at least a 12 month ban, an unlimited fine, a possible prison sentence, and a criminal record.

People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug-driving, or call 999 if they know someone is driving illegally.

DOGS TRAINED by charity Canine Partners will be in the spotlight at the Champions Tennis event held at The Royal Albert Hall which started yesterday (Thursday).

The ball-dogs will be playing a key role of retrieving tennis balls for some of the biggest names in tennis, including former world number one John McEnroe and former British number one Tim Henman.

“We are delighted to be given the opportunity to get involved with Champions Tennis this year,” says Nicola Martin, chief executive of Canine Partners. “Retrieving dropped items is just one of the hundreds of amazing things our dogs can do for people with disabilities.”

Canine Partners is a national charity training assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting confidence and independence. The demonstration dog team have been practicing ball-dog skills ready for the big event.

“Warwick and I have been practising ball retrieval in the house and garden as he loves bringing things back to me and he is very enthusiastic,” says demonstration dog handler Ruth Comber, from Horsham.

“He is a flat coated retriever so carrying something in his mouth is one of his favourite things, although it is usually a teddy! We are looking forward to meeting some tennis legends and having fun on court. It will be our first time at The Royal Albert Hall too, so we can’t wait!”

The demonstration team will also be meeting and greeting with some of the audience. and showcasing some of the tasks the amazing dogs can do.

The Champions Tennis event, which started yesterday and runs until Sunday, December 9, includes Grand Slam Champions, former world number ones and national icons.

If the children have worked up an appetite skimming stones, then the kids' menu includes a varied choice of breakfasts and main courses just for them. Plus there’s warming hot chocolate and the fun Billy’s sundaes for those impervious to the cold, such as Double Doggy Doo Delight – a melting pot of chocolate ice cream, Maltesers, crushed flakes, chocolate sauce and cream.

THroughout the winter, the café hosts regular events, such as music nights, when musicians provide live entertainment on a Saturday evening, or its locals nights held every THursday, with a seasonal set menu.

You don’t have to be local to join in, just get yourself to Bracklesham Bay from 5.30pm on THursdays and you will be part of the Billy’s community.

Getting there is easy. THere is plenty of parking near the café, but if you want to enjoy a pint of two of local craft ale from Arundel’s Goldmark Brewery then the Number 52 bus stops just the other side of Beech Avenue in Bracklesham Lane – a few minutes’ walk to the cafe. From the centre of Chichester, the ride takes just 30 minutes.

Or when it’s low tide, you can walk all the way to Billy’s on the Beach along the coastline from East Wittering. THis 20-minute stroll will work up an appetite for the café’s famous breakfast.

So, there is no excuse for hibernating under the duvet this winter. Head to Bracklesham Bay for some invigorating sea air and then reward yourself with a warm Billy’s welcome.

The history of St Nicholas Church in Lavant

By Amy Roberts, collections officer at The Novium Museum and Caroline Reynolds, Lavant History Project THIS ARTICLE discusses the history of the Church of St Nicholas, Mid Lavant, in order to provide some context for next week’s article, which focuses on the Lavant History Project.

The project, undertaken by volunteers, has brought to life the stories of people of the past through looking at the information and inscriptions on their gravestones.

The church, which dates from the 12th century, has gravestones within its churchyard dating from 1724 through to 21st century interments of ashes. Its history and that of the stones reflects changes in social attitudes and lifestyles.

Watched over by the 1,000-year-old yew tree in the churchyard, the earliest reference to the church being dedicated to St Nicholas comes from the will of William Arnold, dated 1545.

William asked that “his body be burid within the church yearde of Syent Nycolas of myd lavant”. Over time, the church building has been substantially modified so that nowadays there are only parts of the nave and chancel from the 12th and 13th century.

The parish of Mid Lavant was historically very poor in the 16th and 17th centuries, and there are a number of references to the church and porch being in a state of decay.

However, after the restoration of Charles II in 1660, things changed and the May family, who

were Lords of the Manor of Rawmere (as they spelled Raughmere), paid for restoration work to the church, as well as for the construction of a vault, in which 20 members of the May family were buried. After the May family left the village in the 1720s, the church once again experienced a period of decline.

However, patronage by the Duke of Richmond’s family and a close connection with the Theological College brought restoration. Henrietta Dorrien, the illegitimate child of the 3rd Duke of Richmond, asked the 4th Duke to help fund the rebuilding of the church as “it is so small that not only the body and gallery are completely fill’d but the Chancel cram’d in no very decent manner”.

In 1844, re-modelling of the church began, largely paid for by Charles Dorrien, Henrietta’s son, although the Duke of Richmond did contribute £10 to the cause. The north aisle was expanded, however, most of the other alterations were more decorative in nature, including one of Dorrien’s own paintings which the Duke later insisted was removed.

Further work was undertaken by the Rev Wood Stephens in 1871. The shingle bell-turret was built to take the place of a 'wretched little wooden belfry' and the nave was lengthened by 12 feet to accommodate the rapidly growing population of Mid Lavant.

This was partly paid for by The Incorporated Society for Promoting the Enlargement, Building and Repairing of Churches and Chapels’, who granted St Nicholas’ £25. A board hanging in the interior points out that: 'The sittings are all free, and subject to allotment by the churchwardens, suitable provision being made for the poorer inhabitants.'

The west gallery was removed and new arches were made connecting the nave and chancel. Mary May’s 1676 Monument, considered a “lugubrious memorial” by one commentator, was placed in the Vault. The architect was Henry Woodyer, of Grafham, in Surrey, while the builder, John Ellis, lived in Portfield, Chichester. The work, which cost somewhere between £600-£700, was paid for by the 6th Duke of Richmond. The triple lancet east window was filled with striking stained glass in memory of the Rev Pater and family, all of whom died within two years of each other. The parents were in their 30s and their son 33 months.

A grand reopening was conducted by Bishop Durnford of Chichester. The ecclesiastical

parishes of Mid and East Lavant were merged in 1880, and have remained so ever since.

The last major rebuilding work to St Nicholas church took place in 1986 when a vestry was added to the north side of the church and a niche was also created for the monument of Lady Mary May which after 100 years' banishment was hauled up from the vault.

Today, St Nicholas’ is a place of worship and a community space. It plays host to the Toddler group, a Brunch café, meetings, films, talks and the Post Office. The graveyard is no longer used for burials In next week’s article we will look at some of the stories which emerged as a result of the Lavant History Project.

The flagship programme is the TLC - a nightly two hour request show The Listeners’ Choice. The teams visit different wards each night to talk to patients and staff to collect requests. They need more people for daytime and evening presentation (all training professional delivered at no cost.)

Scooter Maintenance volunteer – Bognor Regis Shopmobility Shopmobility hires out electric scooters/wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs on a daily basis to people who require them so they can have greater independence and enjoy the local facilities. They need someone to keep their mobility scooters/wheelchairs in order; keep them charged, clean and presentable, pump tyres up when needed (no heavy maintenance), not letting them lose their chargers or baskets, and keep them ready for action. You will also possibly be required to deliver them sometimes locally (no driving licence required). They are looking for someone who will take pride in organising a shed/garage and instilling a sense of order to the vehicles; a friendly person to join the team of Volunteers and someone that can work with others or alone (they will feed you with biscuits and provide tea/coffee!)

PostSport Flying Chi try for five on the spin as the remarkable recovery rolls on CHICHESTER RFC are shooting for a five star show as their mid-season recovery is turning increasingly into a Christmas miracle.

A month ago, they were locked in a relegation battle, with just one victory against their name. But four wins from four later and Chi are in the top half with hopes of kicking on even further in the National South One. The change of fortune at Oaklands Park has been remarkable, with the return to fitness of a number of senior players giving the Blues some stability.

With those experienced heads back in the side, Chi wrapped up a 30-9 victory on the road at Cobham last time out.

That bonus point victory puts Blues eighth in the league and, along with leaders Brighton, they are the form team in the division.

But Chi will have to be at their best if they are to make it five on the spin when they entertain Sevenoaks at Oaklands tomorrow (2pm).

They will want to show more ruthlessness than the Cobham match when Blues made winning the match harder than perhaps it should have been.

The visitors took the lead on the ten minute mark when, following a lineout and the back

of the driving maul, Harry Seaman darted across the line to touch down in the corner.

But Blues were unable to capitalise on dominating the scrum and possession.

Instead, the rest of the half proved to be a scrappy affair with penalties exchanges between both sides - 9-11 at the break.

Into the second period and Chi started to take charge. New boy Josh Terry surged forward, making 15 metres before being stopped just short of the line.

The ball was recycled to Henry Anscombe for a pass to Sam Renwick who ghosted through the defence for a try out wide.

Conversion missed - 9-16.

A third followed when Rhys Thompson's cross field kick bounced for Ben Robson to collect at pace and dot down in the corner.

With 20 minutes left, the Chi faithful were hopeful for a bonus point try. However, Cobham had other ideas and launched wave after wave of attacks.

A sin binning for Blues did not help. But, with four minutes left, they were restored to 15. An attacking scrum saw Seaman pass to Renwick who notched his second try in the corner.

DARTS: Dave Owens' remarkable 164 out shot wrapped up a winning leg in just legs during Friary Z's comfortable win ove Lamb Flamingos.

Briant injury dents Bognor's title push

BOGNOR RFC's title hopes remain intact but they look set to tackle a large part of their campaign without scrum half Paul Briant after he suffered a horrific leg injury.

The Purple and Greens registered their seventh win from eight in dispatching Eastleigh IIs 48-5 at Hampshire Avenue last weekend.

Next up for third-place Bognor is a trip to third-bottom Tottonians IIs tomorrow (2pm) with a win a must if they are to stay in touch with leaders Basingstoke, who are ten points clear at the summit.

The Purple and Greens will take comfort from the win against Eastleigh's second string which came in challenging conditions.

Joshua Burgess was the first to score for the home side after a dominant Bognor scrum led by Chris Webb, Darren Bidwell and Harry Stubbs. 7-0.

A second followed shortly after when Nathan Archer fed flyer Sam Newcombe who touched down to make it 12-0.

Another Bognor scrum this time on their own five metre line saw a turnover for the home side and a gorgeous 70 metre break from the impressive Briant and Burgess.

It was shortly after this attack that the scrum half suffered he injury which left him being taken to St Richards.

Bognor continued to pour forward and captain Burgess charged off the back of a scrum to cross and make it 19-0.

Further tries followed from Webb and flanker George Castleton before Burgess rounded off his hat trick moments later.

He then added a fourth to make it 43-0 before the number 8 left the field to a big ovation from the home faithful.

What followed was the only slip up from the home side all day. Eastleigh broke well through the back line and finished in style.

But Bognor hit back and expert finisher Paddy Burnett sprinted past his opposite man after some lovely hands in the midfield to complete the scoring.

RUGBY: Bognor under-17s had to fight back from a 12-8 half time deficit to beat a physical Fareham Colts side 46-12 at Hampshire Avenue on Sunday.

The visitors started with a bang using their big ball carriers to dent the Bognor defence and took the lead shortly after.

But the Bognor backs hit back and a long pass from Ethan Clark allowed full back Frankie Jolley to scamper over.

Back came Fareham and some poor tackling saw them crash over. Bognor responded with a penalty slotted home

by Clark before the break.

Bognor made tactical adjustments at half time, looking to move the ball wide at every opportunity. It paid off with George Orchard scoring soon after.

It was then followed by a good finish from Lewis Decarteret, who added his second shortly after.

It was one way now and the Bognor forwards upped the intensity. Jolley and Connor Herrington linked to put Harry Ide away in the corner for a great team try. It was then over Decarteret to score his third hat-trick of the season and Owen Henton score a with a great finish.

Bognor travel to play Portsmouth Colts on Sunday, December 16.

League the focus for City as a Peakey blinder seals late win

Luffa mop up at X-Country HUNDREDS of youngsters braved the mud and near freezing temperatures in the annual West Sussex West Schools Cross Country Championships.

Held at Bishop Luffa School, Chichester, the hosts dominated, recording a clean sweep of individual and team titles. All four races were of a high standard, with many competitors certain to feature strongly in the main Sussex Schools Championships at Waterhall, Brighton, in January, with an eye on selection for the English Schools event later in the season.

First up was the junior girls’ race, which was dominated by the school’s Buckler twins, with Isobel coming out on top, 11 seconds in front of Eva. In the junior boys’ race, Luffa’s Harvey McGuiness just got the better of Fionn O’Murchu of St Philip Howard.

In the senior and intermediate combined girls it was a newcomer to the Sussex Schools’ scene, Ellie Farrow, who was a clear winner of the senior race. She was followed

by Alice Cox-Rusbridge and Alice Ward to make it a clean sweep for the hosts.

In the intermediate race, Luffa’s Olivia Toms made a valiant effort to chase Ellie Farrow for much of the race and did well to finish second.

The senior and intermediate boys race started off at a furious pace, with Bishop Luffa seniors Leo Stallard and Ned Potter determined to make it a true test of stamina. The pair ran within a few strides of each other until the start of the final lap when Leo gradually increased the pace and took top spot by 20 seconds.

There was an equally fine battle for the top intermediate spot with Luffa’s James Gardam just getting the better of Ethan Ward from Felpham by a mere two seconds.

--Bognor Tone Zone runners kept up their fine running record with a number of faces chalked off this week.

Four club members flew the flag for the club at the Southampton Common 10k.

Jack Penfold finished 10th in a time of 39:19, followed by his father, Glenn, who sneaked under the 50 minute barrier for the second weekend running.

Third home for the club was Jo Penfold, with a time of 1:06 at her first ever 10k, hot on her heels was Juliette just behind.

CHICHESTER City's focus is firmly on the league as the title chasers continue to hold onto the coat tails of SCFL Premier leaders Horsham YMCA. With close to half of the season gone, Miles Rutherford's side have lost just three times in the league all season.

But with YM showing no sign of letting up and currently sitting five points clear, Chi know they must keep on winning if they are to keep up the pressure into the spring.

City did that last weekend although they left it late in the day to bag the victory.

After falling 2-0 down to Langney Wanderers, Chi hit back through Kaleem Haitham and Scott Jones before Ryan Peake netted with a few minutes left to seal a memorable win.

Next up for Chi in the league is a visit from struggling Shoreham tomorrow (3pm). Then there is a visit to SCFL Premier basement side Eastbourne United in the fourth round of the RUR Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

With Chi losing 1-0 in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup to East Preston in midweek, Rutherford will be looking for a reaction - particularly with a trip to Horsham YMCA coming on December 15.

Lights out on Lions' Vase run

PAGHAM'S hopes of two cup shocks in a week were foiled - by wired opponents and faulty electrics.

In what was a big few days for everyone at Nyetimber Lane, Lions lost out to Wessex Premier side Sholing for a place in the last 32 of the FA Vase.

Then, back at home, Pagham were cruelly denied a famous Senior Cup win over Burgess Hill when faulty floodlights halted proceedings with the home side 2-0 up on their Bostik Premier opponents.

It was an unsatisfactory end to a tough

week for the side jointly managed by Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen.

Before making the trip to Sholing on the outskirts of Southampton, the club knew they would be in for a tough match against a side who have an unblemished record in their league. And so it proved with the hosts storming into a 4-0 lead by the break.

In the second period, Pagham, who have lost just once in the SCFL Premier, were much better and got two back through Callum Overton and George Gaskin.

give them extra incentive for the Senior Cup tie against Burgess Hill in midweek.

Next up for fourth-placed Lions is a return to the league and a tough trip to fifth-placed Saltdean United tomorrow (3pm).

That will be followed by a home match in the fourth round of the RU Cup on Tuesday, when AFC Uckfield Town visit the Lane under the repaired floodlights (7.30pm).

In SCFL Division One Selsey will be hoping for a bumper crowd as they offer free entry to all for their match against Alfold at the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

The Blues have been in fine form in recent weeks, with a run of three wins in a row lifting them up to fifth.

Last weekend's match against Southwick was postponed due to rain. But a match against a side who are third will give Daren Pearce a clear indication of how far his young side have progressed in recent months.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham are due to visit Billingshurst tomorrow (3pm) with a midweek game against bottom side St Francis Rangers lined up for Tuesday (7.45pm).

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will host Littlehampton Town tomorrow (3pm) looking to register back to back wins for the first time all year.

Chi's cup reward is tie with the leaders CHICHESTER City Ladies will face a familiar foe in the FA Cup - but only if they overcome Sussex rivals Crawley Wasps tomorrow.

Aaron Smith's side have been in excellent form all year, meaning at the half way point of the season they are second in the National Southern Premier, one point behind leaders Coventry United.

And it is the Midlands side who Chi could face in the third round of the FA Cup - but only if they win in their rescheduled tie with the Wasps at Oakwood on Sunday (2pm).

The second round tie should have taken place last weekend but fell foul of the winter weather as torrential rain fell in the area.

The winner will then take on Coventry at Daventry Town on January 6.

The first half of the season has been extra special for Jess Lewry, who marked her 50th appearance for the club just a few weeks ago.

Lewry first appeared in the green and white back in the title winning 2016/17 season in the 4-0 win over Cheltenham.

In that time, the tricky winger has netted 27 times and, after shaking off a number of injuries, looks back to her best - registering three assists in the recent 4-2 win over Basildon which marked her half century.

She said: “To have been part of this club and to have made that many appearances is just amazing.

"I had no idea until after the Basildon game and it was definitely good to mark it with a trio of assists. It made it all the more special."

Blake blasts lack of respect as Bognor's slump continues Next Game

DORKING W'RERS (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

ROCKS coach Robbie Blake is calling on his players to start showing some leadership as Bognor look to snap a slump of just two wins in two months.

The Nyewood Lane side's woes continued the past week when a 1-1 draw at lowly Harlow Town was followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Enfield Town.

That return of one point from six has seen Rocks drop to tenth in an increasingly competitive Bostik Premier division.

Bognor have a chance to get their season back on track tomorrow when they welcome leaders Dorking Wanderers to the Nye Camp.

With former Rocks favourites Sami El-Abd and Jason Prior in their ranks, the Surrey side will be a tough nut to crack.

Blake believes his side are up to it - but only if they can sort out some of the behindthe-scenes issues which have cropped up in recent weeks.

Speaking to Rocks Radio after the Harlow draw, the former Bolton and Burnley striker said: "There's a lack of discipline and not enough respect around the dressing room but these things will get ironed out. Mark my words. Jack and I will work through that "It has nothing to do with the result as that pales into significance "Nothing major is happening but there are a few things we need to sort out."

Blake added: "Everyone wants to win and

everyone deals with talking in different ways but we need to improve on and will improve on that."

Blake's strong words came after Rocks' seventh draw away in the league this season.

Once again, Bognor dominated much of the possession and created the better chances but were unable to register more than a Jimmy Muitt penalty.

As has happened so often this campaign, the opponents hit back, leaving Bognor to hold on for the point.

Tuesday's match was probably harder to take for the Rocks faithful.

Mason Walsh had given them the lead against Enfield Town but a mixture of errors and a poor refereeing decision saw Rocks concede two second half goals which ultimately cost them.

Blake said he was happy with how the team was dominating matches but they needed to become a little more savvy to start winning matches.

The former Portsmouth coach said: "Out of possession we are like a Subbuteo team and we have to get better.

"Even when the opponents have a little bit of impetus in the game we have not got enough leadership or qualities around us to keep it simple and take the sting out of the game.

"We need to have more game management around that."

Charman a doubt for Dorking HE'S a true fan favourite who was brought back to solve the Rocks' centre half crisis.

But less than two games into his third spell at Nyewood Lane, Gary Charman suffered an injury which makes him a doubt for the clash with league leaders Dorking tomorrow.

With Corey Heath and Keaton Wood both out until after Christmas, the return of Zorro was expected to add much-needed experience to the Rocks back four.

But, after going off while Bognor were oneup against Enfield on Tuesday, Charman is now in a race against time to get fit for the weekend.

Manager Jack Pearce is certainly hopeful that the experienced defender, who joined from Burgess Hill last week, will be available.

He said: "We know all about Gary's strengths and, of course, he knows all about the club, our principles and the manner in which we like to play the game. So, in many ways, it is a perfect fit.

"Not only does he provide experience and influence with his knowledge of how to defend, but also has leadership qualities which is always a hugely positive asset. And he also has a good presence in the dressing room."

IT'S not been the best week for us all at the club.

Two games in a week and only one point - it's getting to the point where I'm struggling to find new things to write!

We need to stop conceding silly goals and we need to take our chances It is up to us as players to make that impact as we are out on the pitch so we need to make changes.

I think we started better on Saturday against Harlow and should have been out of sight in the first 30 minutes.

In the second half it was a bit more difficult then we ended up holding on for a point.

It's just the way we have been going recently.

We are a very young team and it's very rare that teams with such young players go on and win the league.

Look at when we went up, look at when Havant won the league - they all had lots of senior players We had men like Gary Charman, Sami El-Abd, James Fraser, James Crane, Dan Beck - all players who I would class as men.

They know how to win games and know the ugly side of the game when we do not have possession. At the moment we are struggling to do that For that reason it is good to have Charman back in the white and green.

In the dressing room he is one of the nicest people around but it is all about having him on the pitch.

With the game on Tuesday against Enfield, after he went off everyone was on edge as he is just unbelievable in the air.

Hindsight is always great but if he's on the pitch I don't think we concede the goals we did.

The first was my fault as the opponent beat me but I think Charman would have cleared the cross.

Then their second was the most blatant handball you will see.

I understand refs make

mistakes but what really frustrates players is when they do not admit they made a mistake on the pitch.

It's even harder when the ref then laughs in players' face when they know there's been an error. It does make me really infuriated.

Of course, refs make mistakes, just like players do.

But when someone does, all you want is for them to put their hands up and apologise.

I will do it as a player. You just want honesty.

Of course, a decision like that does affect the result.

But I don't think we deserved to win the game on our performance.

I think a draw would have been fair. Aside from the two goals, I cannot remember Dan having much to do.

As you may expect, we had it out after the match on Tuesday and had a big discussion about where we want to go from here.

There are a few ways you can go about getting a reaction some like to rant and rave and then call people out. But with a young squad it's not always that easy.

All I will try and do as captain is to try and motivate my teammates and we have the perfect incentive on Saturday with Dorking visiting.

I cannot see a better game to get us to click.

We are not playing well so there is no pressure and they are probably the best team in the league.

It's a great chance for us to see how good they really are and have a go for 90 minutes.

I hope we respond. With Sami and Jason Prior against us, it does add a bit more to the match as I know there are a few of us who would love to beat them.

As a team we are generally up for big game as we know that on a good pitch on a good day we can beat anyone.

We need to show up and perform well and let's see how it goes!
