Council calls on a reduction in waste

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS in the Chichester district are being encouraged to help reduce the amount of food that goes to waste each year.

Research has shown that 70 per cent of wasted food could have been eaten at some point prior to being thrown away. Of that, 41 per cent is just not used in time and 25 per cent is thrown away because too much food was prepared or cooked.

THis is the equivalent of nearly 20 rubbish trucks full of food being thrown away every day in West Sussex – and throwing food away costs.

On average, residents are throwing away the equivalent of £20 per person per month, or £70 per month for a family of four. THis amount rises at Christmas when many families fill their cupboards with festive treats that don’t always get eaten in time.

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for residents services at Chichester District Council, said: “It’s shocking to see how much food is wasted in West Sussex but by working together, we can reduce this figure in the Chichester District.”

Chichester District Council is working with the West Sussex Waste Partnership to encourage residents to shop smarter and make the most of their leftovers to reduce the amount of food that ends up in the bin.

“We all like to indulge over Christmas but we must be careful not to buy too

much food that only ends up being thrown away,” says Cllr Barrow.

“Simple things such as taking a list with you when you go food shopping; avoiding going shopping when you’re hungry; and using leftover food to create new meals, are ways we can all help in the fight against food waste.”

Reindeer Run at school raises hundreds for city's hospice SCHOOLCHILDREN, staff and parents took part in the annual Reindeer Run at the Great Ballard School in Eartham.

After gathering in sponsorship, runners donned antlers and limbered up to take on a variety of courses around the school grounds.

Almost £600 has been raised already for St Wilfrid's Hospice from the race and sponsorship money is still coming in.

THe hospice provides end of life care in the community and at the hospice, which provides essential support for both patients and relatives.

District Council leader Tony Dignum was spotted meeting Father Christmas, along with Cllr Jane Kilby of both city and district councils.

Santa Claus asked Cllr Dignum what he wanted for Christmas and he replied: "Not anything right now but I do want to give a cheque to this marvellous charity, the Chichester Lions."

Cllr Dignum then popped the cheque

into the collection bucket.

Peter Wilson, from Chichester Lions Club, said: "Everyone is being very generous this year.

"Every penny raised goes to local charities and we are working hard with volunteers, organisations, councillors and Santander staff to collect as much as we can.

"THe static display in Northgate car park has been exceptionally well attended, with similar amounts being raised to those of last year.

"Residents and visitors to the city are still as generous this year as they have been in the past.

"We might be out and about getting

wet, but we will be there whatever the weather and we look forward to seeing many more people."

An annual event organised by THe Novium Museum was awarded a coveted bronze award in the tourism event of the year category.

THe award serves as recognition of Chichester Roman Week’s most successful year yet. Taking place during May half -erm every year, the event brings Roman history to life with a variety of events taking place in the city centre and around the district.

Grant funding from the Roman Research Trust and the Roman Society funded the headline event during the week this year – a Roman re-enactment in Priory Park, which attracted more than 2,000 visitors during the day.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, said: "It is a real honour for Chichester Roman Week to have been recognised in this year’s prestigious Beautiful South Awards.

To receive a bronze award for tourism event of the year 2018 is a testament to the hard work of the team at THe Novium Museum."

Stubcroft Farm Campsite's haul of three awards was only bettered by the Mary Rose Trust, one of the UK’s most prestigious tourist attractions, which won three gold awards.

` Parking plans PLANS to give parking management powers to one cabinet member rather than leaving them with local councillors, have been described as ‘an appalling idea’.

With parking problems in towns and villages across West Sussex being exacerbated by new housing developments, the county council has been using road space audits to work out where the issues are and how best to control them. THe audit scheme has been trialled in Chichester.

While its work has been welcomed by councillors, suggestions that the cabinet member for highways and infrastructure be given the final say on any proposals put forward have not gone down well.

At the moment, the council’s 11 county local committees (CLCs) give people the chance to tell their ward members what they want to see happen on issues such as schools, libraries and roads.

During a meeting of the environment, communities and fire select committee, Cllr Francis Oppler said: “I think it’s an appalling idea, absolutely appalling. Whatever party you represent, whatever community that you are a councillor for, this really strikes at the heart of local democracy.

“THe ability for residents to be able to communicate with their local members with their views is hugely sensitive."

While committee members voted against the proposals, the final decision will be made by the cabinet member.

Public asked views on city's local plan

Businesses and residents are being urged to give their views as part of the Local Plan Review public consultation which went live yesterday (THursday).

THe consultation is asking people for their views about how and where development needs such as housing, employment and retail should be met and managed in Chichester district over the next 15 years.

THe document sets out the council’s proposed planning strategy for the period up to 2035.

THe Local Plan does not include areas within the South Downs National Park.

THese areas are subject to a separate plan undertaken by the South Downs National Park Authority.

People will be able to view and comment on the draft plan, called the Local Plan Review: Preferred Approach, over the next eight weeks until February 7, 2019.

Reference copies of the draft plan will be made available online or for people to view at: • Chichester Library: Tower Street, Chichester • Selsey Library: School Lane, Selsey • Southbourne Library: First Avenue, Southbourne • Chichester District Council offices:

Festival of Speed visitors raise thousands for a new museum THE JIM Clark Trust raised a huge £53,000 from donations from Goodwood Festival of Speed visitors over the four-day event weekend held this summer.

THe official charity of the festival, the proceeds will help to celebrate the memory of one of the most successful and admired motor racing legends of all time, with plans for a new Jim Clark Museum.

THis year’s Festival of Speed 2018 marked the 50th anniversary of 1968 with a competition launched to win the 100,000th Lotus ever made to raise funds for the charity – a Jim Clark

special edition Lotus Evora GT410 Sport inspired by Jim’s famous 1960s Elan and created by Lotus Exclusive.

THe winner of the competition will be announced at the opening of the new Jim Clark Museum in summer 2019.

THe new, expanded Jim Clark Museum is being built to preserve the memory and display some of the incredible cars in which Jim Clark raced. THe new £1.6m museum is funded by a partnership between the Heritage Lottery Fund, Scottish Borders Council and THe Jim Clark Trust.

Saving the city from rubbish with one coffee cup at a time

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A COFFEE shop in Chichester has stopped over 81,500 disposable coffee cups from going into landfill in the past six months.

On June 1, 2018, independentlyowned café chain Boston Tea Party (BTP) banned disposable coffee cups from all its stores, which included the Chichester branch from the day it opened.

Customers taking away hot drinks now do so in reusable cups. People are welcome to bring their own reusable cups, to borrow a loan cup and bring it back at their convenience for a full refund or buy an Ecoffee cup.

BTP has sold over 22,500 Ecoffee cups since the ban at cost price, to help make it easy as possible for their customers.

THe saving to the business of supplying disposable cups, ten pence per cup, is being donated to local community causes.

To date, £8.1k has been raised, which will be donated to each branch’s chosen charities. Chichester’s BTP is working with City Angels, which supports the homeless and people in abusive situations.

General manager of BTP in Chichester, Annie THomas, said: "It's been well accepted that we don't have

the disposable cups. It coincided with the time of the plastic waste going into water and the David Attenborough documentary.

"Chichester has a certain etiquette and has always been quite proud of keeping their area clean and doing the right thing.

"We found where we opened without the cups, rather than going from single use to then not having them, everyone really embraced it as part of what we

were from day one.

"We have lots of people coming in with their own cups and a lady came in with another coffee shop disposable cup. She was hiding it and wanted a coffee from us but didn't want to buy an Ecoffee cup. I explained we could use the one she had.

"It's our coffee. You can bring in whatever you like. You can even bring in an old boot if you want. We really don't mind. It's just trying to inspire people."

THe business as a whole, which risked £1million in takeaway hot drink sales across its 22 cafes, has seen a fall of 24 per cent in takeaway hot drink sales during past six months, compared with the same period last year.

THe BTP team continues to work to eliminate as much single-use plastic as possible from its cafes and are working with many organisations, universities and other cafes to help them go singleuse cup-free.

Location hotspots included Adsdean and THe Trundle at Goodwood.

In Wilson Close, Chichester, on Tuesday, November 27, police received a report that a vehicle was having damage caused to its tyres while parked at this location. Serial 1085 27/11.

Police received a report of a burglary at a business premises in Highleigh Road, Highleigh, on Tuesday, November 27. Serial 1268 27/11.

On Friday, November 30, in Albert Road, Chichester, police received a report of a distraction burglary. THree men told the occupier they were from the Water Board and gained access to the property. Items from the owner’s handbag were stolen. Serial 0907 30/11.

In Midhurst Road, Fernhurst, also on Friday, November 30, a horse trailer was stolen from a field. Serial 0930 30/11.

In Lumley Road, Emsworth, on Saturday, December 1, police received a report of a burglary in progress. A man was trying doors and hopping between gardens. He was located and arrested. Serial 0523 01/12.

No bad hair days for guests to city's popular Christmas hairdressers party THE ANNUAL Christmas event at Q Hair and Beauty has become a greatly-anticipated occasion on the social calendar in Chichester and on December 5, 80 guests flocked to the salon for a lively and enjoyable evening.

Public get behind knicker collection OVER 1,000 pairs of underwear have been collected by Rotary Club of Chichester Harbour.

THe club held two collection sessions in the city at the beginning of the month, where they asked members of the public to donate brand new pairs of underwear.

For more than 20 years the club has been collaborating with local support agencies and other charities to help those families most in need, especially those escaping domestic violence, in the local area.

Over the years, they have seen the need to help rise sharply and now attend the foodbank in Chichester to give out clothing alongside the food packages provided.

Publicity officer Glyn Brown said: "We have crossed the 1,000 mark which is just fantastic but, bizarrely, we’re

still short of children’s underwear! So we’re happy for people to continue donate by calling: 07479667486 "We uploaded a message on to our Facebook page and guess what, we a received a donation from a family in America , the power of social media!"

Joanne Kondabeka, project manager at Chichester District Foodbank, said: "We are so grateful for the work Chichester Harbour Rotary Club does in partnership with Chichester District Foodbank.

"Together, we provide parcels to families escaping domestic abuse and the Rotary Club provides a clothes rail once a week at the foodbank centre in Chichester.

"THe Rotary Club do amazing work and I am so pleased they were able to collect over a 1,000 pairs of knickers to give out to those in need."

GILLIAN KEEGAN has confirmed she backed the Prime Minister in the vote of confidence on Wednesday evening.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice is calling on members of the public and their dancing shoes to help set the record for the world’s largest street dance lesson at 11am.

In just over half an hour anybody joining in could be part of a new Guinness World Record attempt! THe headline event for Santa in the Park, the dance, is designed for all ages and abilities. Dancers will learn the moves step by step, then perform to a song.

To set the new world record, the charity needs 400 people to take part in a full lesson in how to street dance.

THere will be a professional teacher, Natalie Temple of Fit Joy, leading people through the moves step by step, and then the hundreds who gather will all attempt to perform the dance together in their new Santa hats.

All ticket holders to Santa in the Park will also get an exclusive 10 per cent discount to an ice skating session with CHiCE that Sunday.

Edward White, of S3K, hosting the ice rink said: "We’re excited to be working with such a well-loved local charity to bring Christmas cheer to Chichester like never before."

THe charity is also encouraging people to take a Santa dance move or ice skating picture on the day and hashtag it with #SantaonIce to be in with a chance to win a prize.

participating to make a real difference to local lives experiencing difficult times, with St Wilfrid’s Hospice continuing to provide end of life care throughout the entire holiday season.

Games and fun on the day includes Santa’s Snowball - which combines the daring of dodgeball with the strategic thinking of capture the flag. Face off against each other throwing soft snow balls to strike the other players out. Each team must rescue their mascot from the other team's base while stopping the opposing team doing the same. THere will be three pitches available with up to

ten players per team.

Health club backs two city charities NEW MEMBERS to Goodwood Health Club this month will be asked to make a donation to charity rather than pay a joining fee.

Any new members can waive the usual £100 joining fee in place of donations to both the Chichester District Foodbank and the RSPCA Mount Noddy Animal Centre.

THe Goodwood Health Club will also be hosting temporary donation points to welcome donations from existing members.

Joanne Kondabeka, project manager at Chichester District Foodbank, said: "Since the demand for food parcels has increased over the last few months, we are so grateful to Goodwood for organising a food collection to help Chichester District Foodbank meet the

needs of families and individuals who are facing a bleak Christmas due to financial crisis."

EXCELLENT status has been achieved for bathing water at two beaches managed by Chichester District Council for the 2019 bathing season.

Bathing water at Bracklesham Bay and Selsey was awarded the classification by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) following monitoring by the Environment Agency between 2015 and 2018.

In addition, bathing water at West Wittering beach, which is privately managed by the West Wittering Estate, was also rated as excellent.

Selsey was previously classified as good, but a partnership project to improve bathing water quality led by Southern Water and supported by Chichester district and Selsey town councils is underway to achieve, and retain excellent bathing water status.

Chichester Harbour Rotary Club organised the cafe in the West Sussex County Council offices on Saturday, to raise money for charity.

Community services committee member Ken Holmes said: "As a club, we do much in the way of community service and all monies raised are spent and we have no administrative overheads unlike many big charities.

"We organised a tea dance free of charge to people with dementia and their carers and we Rotarians who helped had to pay for our own tea."

` MP asks A27 question CHICHESTER MP Gillian Keegan has asked Transport secretary Chris Grayling to confirm if it is still the department’s intention to fund major road improvements around Chichester in the recently increased road investment strategy 2 (RIS2) budget?

Mr Grayling responded: "I know how important this is to my hon. Friend and to many of her constituents.

"She will know that the divisions of opinion in the local community have put the project back by a number of years.

"I do not want to give her undue cause for optimism about its position in the queue, because it was certainly a setback when the local authority decided to reject Highways England’s plans, but it remains the view of the Government and Highways England that improvements in the area around her constituency will be necessary in the future."

A special grotto tucked in the museum to visit Santa

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN visiting the Novium Museum have been delighted to find Santa Claus seated in his grotto on the first floor.

THe museum in Tower Street in the city centre has been hosting the meet and greets for the past five years.

THe Novium introduced a pre-booking system few years ago and for the last two slots have completely sold out in advance.

THe past two years they have had to extend Santa's time by an extra hour per day to accommodate demand.

Laura Williams, communications and events officer, said: "Each year we have parents checking that it’s the same Santa as the year before – children are growing up with him by visiting every year, and know him as the ‘Real Santa’ – he’s a very popular man!

"THe pre-booking system ensures that families get seen within their half-hour time slot, so it avoids long queues.

"Each family or group is seen individually and gets time to speak with Father Christmas as well as the all-important photo opportunity!

"Children then get to take a gift away with them - this year they get either a soft toy, magnet activity box or game of dominos,

depending on their age.

"Having Santa in the museum has become a festive tradition for visiting families, as well as us!

"He makes a lovely festive addition to our events programme, and encourages families in to look around the museum as well as visiting Father Christmas.

"THere is a small charge per child to visit Father Christmas, but admission to the museum is free, which encourages many visitors to extend their stay and take in the exhibits, café and gift shop as well."

Father Christmas donates all of his proceeds to various animal and children charities each year he visits the Novium and this is his fourth year.

He said he had been an 'active Santa' for the

past 20 years or so.

"I started with a colleague and we took presents to Naomi House hospice in Winchester," He said.

"If you can bring a smile to someone's face, you are doing a good job.

"I keep telling the children to be a smile ambassador for Santa and make sure nobody is sad at Christmas."

Natasha King, from Chichester, took her five-year-old daughter, Louise Bell,

to see Santa on Saturday afternoon.

She said: "We saw this advertised on Facebook and we have not been to see Santa here before.

"I am really surprised at how she was and she's usually scared of Santa. THis year has been the best so far and I am sure she will be going on about it all day now! We would definitely come back here, Santa is really good, he looks very nice and plump, which is more realistic!"

City centre comes alive with visits from Santa and all things Christmas

THe Chichester Business Improvement District (BID) has put together a programme of events which have been running in the city centre.

A magical Nutcracker-themed trail for visitors and shoppers to the city has been running to encourage people to stay longer.

THe ten six foot tall Nutcracker Kings will be guarding various locations around the city centre.

THe trail has been devised to take people around both main and side streets, and can be completed in any order.

All the participants need to do is locate all the Nutcracker Kings and note down their names on the form inside the booklet to be in with a chance of winning one of five prizes.

THe trail runs right up to Christmas Eve the trail can be picked up at any time. It can be done all in one go or completed over a few visits.

THe beautiful singing Snow Queen has been spotted out and about in the city centre, dressed in her gorgeous icy white, silk and velvet finery.

Her Majesty, the Snow Queen, can be seen enthroned on the sleigh, overflowing with presents, marshmallows and fur. Everyone is

invited to have their photo taken with the Snow Queen and you might be lucky and get to borrow her tiara.

THe West Sussex recycled bottle tree has visited Crawley, Horsham and Bognor Regis, and has now made its home for winter by coming to Chichester.

THe tree is on display outside Jack Wills, in North Street, and will remain there until Friday, January 4.

To celebrate the tree’s arrival, the West Sussex Waste Partnership, Chichester District Council, Chichester BID and Jack Wills hosted a switch-on ceremony with the mayor of Chichester, Cllr Martyn Bell, and the mayoress, Mrs Toom Bell.

THey were also joined by the Prebendal Choir, who treated onlookers to some traditional Christmas carols and the Waste Prevention Team were on hand to answer any recycling queries and offer advice on how to reduce using singleuse plastics.

THe tree sculpture is made from 600 reused green plastic bottles and is the brainchild of Tracey Graham, known as the ‘Rubbish Artist’, to help highlight plastic recycling in West Sussex.

For months, the BID Team prepared for Christmas, to light up the city centre on members' behalf. THey negotiated to ensured value for money, more extensive displays, higher specifications and quality. THis year we’ll see more lights, in more areas.

Added attractions this year include wider cross street decorations, featuring fabulous 3D chandeliers, motif wall

mounts, 3D stars and spheres, cathedral trees and sparkling trees in Eastgate, Little London and outside Marks & Spencer.

THe funds saved by Chichester BID by not putting on an official switch-on event this year were put towards providing a street entertainment programme.

A spokesperson said: "Chichester BID are really delighted by all the positive feedback received from both our businesses and the general public about this year’s stunning festive lights which decorate the city centre.

"THe Christmas lights, the Nutcracker Trail, BID’s festivities brochure and the sponsorship of Spirit FM’s new “Christmas Spirit” digital radio station have really enhanced the feeling of festive cheer within the city centre."

As well as these events, the Christmas park and ride has returned, along with the Christmas market.

by Stagecoach and supported by Chichester College and means residents and visitors can spend more time looking for presents rather than parking spaces in the runup to Christmas.

` Christmas tree waste IF YOU'RE planning to buy a real tree for your home this Christmas, this is what you can do to dispose of it once you take it down: Garden waste customers can place their tree out with their green bin for collection when the service resumes from Monday, January 7.

THere are also free Christmas tree recycling drop-off points around the district where you can take your real tree for recycling/composting.

Alternatively, you can take real Christmas trees to your local household waste recycling site.

Coats warm the hearts of city

Supported by the Chichester Post, the coat rack held under the arches at the Assembly Rooms in the city centre has seen hundreds of coats donated and collected by those in need.

THe coat rack is the brainchild of businesswoman Donna Ockenden, who also runs THe Chichester Four Streets Project – a charity which helps the city's homeless.

THe coat project was set up after Donna saw the idea happening in other cities. Donna knew she would always ensure her children had a warm coat but it wasn’t always possible for everyone.

THe community coat rack has already been in the city centre for the past four weeks this year and Donna said the people

of Chichester had been incredibly generous.

"After four weeks, there is no sign of supply and need reducing," she said.

"Every day, the turnover on the coat rack is huge and the one we put away each night is almost completely different to the one we put out in the morning due to the supply and demand.

"THe coat rack is not staffed so we don't count them, we just rely on people's kindness and judge the amount going and coming by the empty hangers and looking at how different it is every day.

"I have had many conversations with local families who have used the coat rack for their children and themselves and they have said how grateful they are to have this opportunity provided to them."

Donna is asking anyone who wishes to donate a coat to make sure it is in a condition you would wear yourself. Any coats left over at the end of the project will be given to a good home.

"Our plan was to leave the coat rack up for around a month depending on the interest," she continued.

"We now plan to continue the rack until just before Christmas when we will take a short break and then resume in early January and keep it going for as long as we can throughout the cold, winter months."

Donna has said that the coats are not just there to help the homeless, but are available to anybody struggling to make ends meet.

THe coat rack is set up under the arches at the City Council house in North Street and will be there all day up until 5pm for anyone wishing to donate or take a coat.

Gold level for healthy menu

THe cafe, a student-run training restaurant, has received a gold level award for its healthy menu, under the national Eat Out Eat Well scheme.

Cafe 19 serves healthy and hearty homemade meals, including staples such as soup and sandwiches as well as a range of tempting daily specials - all cooked and served by hospitality and catering students.

Lecturer Alison Girdlestone has been a driving force in ensuring the menus meet the healthy standards set by the Eat Out Eat Well Scheme.

She said: "Since Cafe 19 opened two years ago, we've been working hard to make sure we are serving delicious meals which are not only filling, but are also healthy.

"It's all about making small changes to the way we prepare our meals to help reduce salt, sugar and fat without compromising the flavour, so as a team we are constantly looking at new ways to do this.

"We're very proud to receive this award as it reflects that we are achieving our aim to make healthy, tasty breakfasts and lunches that our customers can enjoy."

Julia Williams, head of learning for service industries at Chichester College, added: "We are very proud of this award - it is a well-deserved recognition of the work that the team have put into Cafe 19.

"THey are constantly developing the

menu, offering freshly cooked, healthy options that will satisfy the appetites of the college's hungry staff and students."

THe Eat Out Eat Well award is assessed and managed by local councils, through trading standards, environmental health and public health teams, and takes into account the type of food on offer, the cooking methods and how meals are promoted to customers.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, said: “I would like to say a huge congratulations to Chichester College for achieving their Eat Out, Eat Well gold award.

“Having this award will mean customers being able to easily make positive, healthy choices in what they eat, and the team there have worked

` Fire service warning WEST SUSSEX Fire & Rescue Service has launched a driving under the influence campaign as the Christmas party season gets underway.

THe fire service is highlighting the experiences of its crews and members of other emergency services who have attended road traffic collisions.

In addition, an offender, currently serving a prison sentence for driving under the influence, has been speaking about his experience.

In 2017, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service attended 43 road traffic collisions where the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

A drink drive offender who killed two pedestrians has also shared his story to get people to think twice before getting behind the wheel under the influence.

THe offender said: “I decided to drink, I got distracted and by the time I looked forward, I was over the stop line, and it was too late to react.

"THere are two families out there that are suffering and it’s all because of my actions and my decision to drive that night. It’s something that I will have to live with for the rest of my life. It all could have been avoided.”

Warning about 'costly' cuts MILLIONS of pounds in funding is set to be maintained towards helping rough sleepers across West Sussex.

County councillors who met on Wednesday discussed recommendations to their cabinet member for adults and health that some of the cutbacks proposed in the autumn should not take place.

THe measures put before the health and adult social care select committee will be decided by Cllr Amanda Jupp in the next few weeks and show £2.3m a year will be spent on housing related support from 2020/21 to ensure the delivery of statutory duties.

THis will allow the current level of funding for youth homelessness to be kept as well as preserving services covering rough sleeping and domestic violence refuges. But funding is set to be withdrawn for homelessness prevention and resettlement among other services. Contracts for housing related support will be changed to take effect from next September.

Funding for seven foodbanks around the county will be maintained along with support for children and families centres.

It will be cut in half for Citizens Advice services and reduced from £555,000 to £50,000 for social enterprise providers who support families with utility top-ups, furniture and white goods.

News of the recommendations came after a ten-strong coalition of housing providers issued a report which detailed the effect of axing all the support for the services its members provide.

THe information showed more than 8,300 people were helped with housing in a year by services which could be axed next year.

THe housing-related support services which the coalition members provide keep individuals in their homes, remain physically and mentally well and allow them to keep pace with the modern world. Without the services, the alliance predicted more rough sleepers would be on the streets, more admissions to A&E of

homeless vulnerable people would occur and mental health inpatient admissions would rise.

THe alliance's members include Stonepillow with its services in Chichester and Bognor Regis, Bognor Housing Trust and Worthing-based GuildCare.

Stonepillow chief executive Hilary Bartle said the providers received £5.1m from the council but the work they carried out saved £38.3m in costs which would be otherwise incurred by other services.

"For every £1 West Sussex put into the budgets for the contracts, £7.50 is saved somewhere else in the funding systems in West Sussex," said Mrs Bartle.

"THe real question is not whether we can afford such services but, conversely, whether we can afford to be without them.

"Our report is based on the savings that our services enable in avoided costs to county, district and borough councils, the criminal justice system, NHS and primary care."

It was four months ago the county council announced its cuts from next April. THe coalition was formed and its lobbying secured a six-month extension on the housing-related support contracts.

"THe impact of these cuts will undoubtedly mean not only the closure of these vital services but will have hugely detrimental consequences on the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in society and in our communities," said Mrs Bartle.

THe report's author, David Solomons, director of business information at coalition member, Peabody, said: "THere can be no question that demand for services that the coalition provides is high.

"Logically, therefore, the absence of such services would open the floodgate to a whole host of accommodation, medical, psychological, financial and social knock-on effects and the costs of these would escalate extremely rapidly."

` Transport survey VIEWS are being sought about the future of electric vehicles in West Sussex.

THe county council has launched a survey to find out residents' thoughts about the form of transport and how charging points should be installed.

THe survey consists of 11 questions and the answers will help to create an electric vehicle strategy which the council will publish next February.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said the strategy would form an important part of its sustainability work.

"Whether you currently own or drive an electric vehicle, are considering buying one in the future, or even if you have no plans to switch, we would like to hear from you."

THe survey is in line with the government's ambition for at least half of new cars to be ultra-low emission by 2030 and all new vehicles to have zero emissions by 2050.

A PROGRAMME to support children who have alcohol-dependent parents has been boosted by a near half a million pound government grant awarded to West Sussex County Council.

THe pioneering programme is a twofold approach to try to improve the prospects for young people whose lives have been affected by parents with alcohol-related difficulties.

Two new full-time specialist members of staff will be recruited to work closely with families. Work will also be carried out to identify and support expectant mothers at risk of alcohol misuse.

Singing their way to success for hospice BOSHAM’S ‘Harbour Voices’ Community Choir raised the roof and more than £1,600 for St Wilfrid’s DreamBuilding appeal for a new purpose-built hospice.

Over 250 attendees, the youngest only three months old, enjoyed a wonderful, jolly atmosphere with a range of classic, contemporary and Christmas songs performed by the 90-strong choir on Saturday, December 1, at St Paul’s Church in Chichester.

THe performance included an Andrew Lloyd Webber medley, a Les Misérables medley, operatic chorus and a selection of Christmas favourites.

Musical director Ben Lathbury led the choir with immense energy and passion, adding

a touch of humour along the way – making animal noises to accompany the 12 days of Christmas and composing his own witty song to sum up the festive period.

St Wilfrid’s DreamBuilding appeal was launched in 2015 to create a new hospice in Bosham. With the support of the local community, 94 per cent of its fundraising total has been reached. However, a further £950,000 is needed before the doors open in spring next year.

A CONSULTANT general and vascular surgeon at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to become a Visiting Professor at the University of Chichester.

Director of medical education David Beattie, who has a national overview of health care training and research at all professional and vocational levels, will be active in the university’s Centre for Research, Development and Workforce.

THe recently-established centre, which sits in the university’s Institute of Education, Health, and Social Care, acts as a hub for research, applied research, knowledge transfer, and continuing professional development activity.

David said: “THe University of Chichester and Western Sussex Hospitals have worked closely together for a number of years.

“During the six years, I have been personally involved I have been very impressed with the academic innovation and development shown by the university.

“It was an honour, therefore, to be offered the post of Visiting Professor - it was an easy decision to accept and I look forward very much to working with the team in the Centre for Research, Development and Workforce over the next few years.”

Mr Beattie is both a practising surgeon and a senior health care manager with expertise in the delivery of healthcare and service transformation.

Competition win is a boost for charity A £1,000 donation has been awarded to Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital after a Portsmouth teenager won a Christmas card competition.

Southern Co-op was overwhelmed by the number of entries to its competition to design a corporate Christmas card which will be sent to colleagues and partners.

But after a few long discussions colleagues agreed that Nicole Pook's design was the winner.

THe teenager has been awarded a hamper of Christmas goodies, copies of her Christmas card and the £1,000 donation in her name made to the wildlife hospital.

Ann Pook, Nicole's mum, said: "I am so proud of her. She entered it because she loves art and wanted to win the money for the animals at Brent Lodge.

"When she leaves school she would like to work with animals."

"Nicole volunteers with us every Saturday for about four hours with her friend and they have been coming for about three months. She really enjoys looking after the hedgehogs, pigeons and other animals in need.

"THey are both extremely passionate about caring for wildlife and are a great help to the rest of the team."

A letter signed by 48 residents has been sent to mark the three-year anniversary of Chichester city councillor Sarah Sharp's crash at the Canal Basin on December 11, 2015.

Long-standing road safety campaigner Sarah Sharp was outlined in chalk outside County Hall, in West Street, recreating the accident scene.

THe 53-year-old, suffered a head injury, a broken shoulder, six broken ribs and two cracked vertebrae when her bicycle was in collision with a car in Basin Way. THe letter sent to the council stated: 'We call on the county to dedicate 15 per cent of its transport budget to walking and cycling as recommended by the Department for Transport.

"No changes have taken place at so many horrendously dangerous junctions in the city. We are being let down by our councils and the councillors are failing residents if pavements aren’t improved to prevent so many people tripping over and hurting themselves or simply to improve ease and comfort for wheelchair users."

Cllr Sharp spent three hours outside County Hall to mark the three years of

time she has spent campaigning, filling in surveys, taking part in meetings, setting up the Cycle Summit and Friends of Centurion Way and helping generally to support better facilities for sustainable travel.

She said: "THis is my way of symbolically protesting against the conditions of the roads around Chichester. I don’t want what happened to me to happen to anyone else.

"Since my accident, no changes have taken place at so many horrendously dangerous junctions in the city. I used to cycle everywhere but now I walk much more."

Tracey Benson, lawyer at Slater and Gordon, which is representing Cllr Sharp in a civil action, added: “We see far too many cases like Sarah’s and we fully support her attempts to make the roads around her home as safe as possible.”

In 1946, a group of demobbed servicemen decided they would race.

Since then, the Pagham Pram Race has been run every year on Boxing Day, whatever the weather, starting at the mill in Pagham Road and passing THe Bear, THe Lamb and THe Kings Beach.

It's a course of roughly three miles that finishes at THe Lamb car park.

In recent years, there have been as many as 60 entrants, with many choosing to don their best fancy dress costumes with fantastically designed floats.

THe race starts at 11am on Boxing Day every year whatever the weather, without fail, from Mill farm on Pagham Road at Pagham.

Contestants can either sign on online before the day or on the day. An entrance fee or donation of at least £10 is required.

Community News & Views THE Chichester branch of the Historical Association, one of just under 50 in the country, continues to play a vital part in the cultural life of Chichester and West Sussex.

THe programme just celebrated at the annual general meeting included eight talks held between September, 2017, and May, 2018. All the speakers were acknowledged experts in their field.

All had published widely and all were experienced and talented speakers. Two were former directors of the Institute of Historical Research in London, the mecca for historians in this country.

Branch president, Dr Andrew Foster, said: "THis quality of speakers probably explains why our branch received excellent support during the year with an average attendance of just under 50 people per meeting. Moreover, the programme was supported by enthusiasts who travelled from as far away as Southampton, the Isle of Wight, Brighton and Horsham.

"THe branch also hosted another local heat of the ‘Great Debate’ – a nationwide competition for sixth-form pupils – while the AGM, as usual, featured a series of mini-talks given by members of the branch.

"Refreshments are now provided at all meetings and visitors will encounter a very convivial atmosphere as well as lively debate."

Talks in the past year covered: Britain in the 1970s, the British Empire in global perspective, Bishop George Bell, the origins of the American Civil War, women, lordship and power in the Middle Ages, 1066, East Germany in 1989, and the Lionheart in captivity.

Branch membership is open to all at a reasonable price and gains access to all meetings, newsletters and contact with likeminded people interested in history.

COUNCILLORS and residents from Chichester and beyond are invited to join Friends of Centurion Way tomorrow (Saturday) from 2pm-4 pm on the path at the bridge over the railway near the side entrance to Bishop Luffa School. Seasonal refreshments will be shared and lanterns decorated to hang on the trees which are under threat if the path is diverted by developers of White House Farm.

THere have been visits to the path by the city's MP, Gillian Keegan, the Bishop, representatives of the Diocese and more recently, the new head of Bishop Luffa School.

Ian Bartle, chairman of the group said: “We are keen to work with the developers, the councils and school to find the best design to preserve and enhance the path. We are looking forward to joining the Whitehouse Farm Community Liaison Group when it meets next year. We are glad path-users are at last going to be represented on this forum and we want to work pro-actively towards the best solution for Chichester as a whole”.

Sarah Sharp, city councillor and one of the founding members of the group, is organising the Christmas event this year and added: “We have some major funding objectives for 2019 to help us record the numbers of users of the path and restore and re-erect the archway over the path which is in storage at Drayton after being taken down by the county council.

"We are proud to be working with the Centurion Way Users Group on this restoration project. We also want to make sure that there are accurate figures of path-users before the WHF development gets underway to see that user numbers do not decrease once the development, with any possible diversion of the path (which we strongly oppose) is completed.”

THe Friends of Centurion Way have planned a series of monthly events for 2019 starting with their traditional “Beating the Bounds” ride/walk on January 1, at 11am.

A NURSE from Selsey has adorned the outside of her house and front garden in Christmas decorations to mark the launch of a local hospital charity’s Christmas gift appeal.

Sarah Munday, 42, a dementia nurse at St Richard’s Hospital, has covered her place of residence with candy canes, reindeers, icicles and a 6ft Nutcracker figure to show support for Love Your Hospital, the dedicated charity of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

THe Christmas Gift appeal is calling on the local community to donate online and enable the charity to provide presents for patients staying in hospital over the festive period.

THe Munday family, based in Marine Drive, have become known locally for elaborately dressing their house each Christmas and attracting a lot of attention. As part of the gift appeal, they’re asking admirers of their hard work

to kindly make a donation in the red post box in the front garden to support dementia care.

Sarah said: “We started decorating the house about ten years ago after moving from Bognor into a bigger property. It takes us three weekends to put everything up inside and out, but Christmas is such a magical time of year that we believe it’s truly worth the effort and we wanted to support the hospital’s charity too.”

With the help of her husband, Ruben, 50, and daughters Lucie, 17, and Jennifer, 19, Sarah has put up so many festive lights, local fishermen claim to be able to see the decorations illuminating the night’s sky two miles out to sea.

DR KATE O’KELLY, Liberal Democrat county councillor for Midhurst division and Chichester district councillor for Rogate, is calling on the county council to publish proposals for changes to the county's bus routes.

THe county has been consulting on its bus strategy over recent months. THe scrutiny committee discussed the position regarding the proposed changes on December 6.

Dr O’Kelly said: “I was aware that a few of the proposed changes were commercially sensitive, but most of the proposals weren’t. However, most are extremely politically sensitive.”

She has submitted a motion to the full council calling to keep the buses in their current form and insisting there are no significant reductions to the network or frequency.

A CHICHESTER College cabinet-maker has won silver at this month’s national skills competition finals.

Apprentice Jamie Kennard, 18 from Eastleigh, came second in the cabinet making category at the national finals of the WorldSkills UK competition, which saw more than 500 competitors battle it out in 70 different disciplines in a bid to be named best in the country.

Jamie, who is studying a level 2 diploma in wood machining, said: “I’m very happy with my silver medal – it was a bit of a shock, but a good one.

“I put in a lot of work to get here, lots of practice – mainly working on joints to make sure they were up to standard and at the best level.

“THe competition was stressful – we had 18 hours and set specifications to build it to, but the time goes by so quickly.

“My ultimate goal is to keep improving and to hopefully get to Shanghai in 2021 – that would be amazing and I’ll be working hard to achieve that!”

Jamie, who has been working as an apprentice at Parkway Interiors since 2017, will now have a chance to follow in the footsteps of world champion cabinet makers – former Chichester College students Edward Harringman and George Callow, who both won gold for the UK at WorldSkills in 2015 and 2013 respectively.

He will have the opportunity to participate in next year’s national skills final – and this time a place in the UK squad will be the main prize as the long road to WorldSkills 2021 begins.

The history of mid Lavant and its people

By Amy Roberts, collections officer at The Novium Museum and Caroline Reynolds, Lavant History Project IN 2017 a group of volunteers set about recording the forgotten stories of gravestones within the churchyard of St Nicholas Church, Mid Lavant.

THe group utilised an innovative photographic technology, reflectance transformation imaging (RTI), which captures the shape and colour of a surface and allows the re-lighting of the object from any direction. THis process highlighted text and images that were no longer legible using the naked eye.

THe project has brought to light some captivating stories of life in the village. THe text that follows will highlight some of the stories that have come to light as a result of the project.

Born in 1735, William Cleverley was a cordwainer like his father. THe cottage they lived in on the Midhurst Road still stands, although it was badly damaged by fire in 1771 and was rebuilt by public subscription.

Another of the Cleverley homes is now located in the Weald and Downland Museum.

Despite his social status, William’s early life was unhappy. His wife and son died by the time he was 37 years of age and his relationship with his father was strained. In his will, William Cleverley senior left him a mere 1 shilling (5p) ‘on request’.

THe wealthy Henrietta Poole came to Lavant in 1795 and began building her house, Lavant Lodge in 1797. Situated just south of the Earl of March, it is now divided into three. William Blake was a regular visitor and during this time he wrote ‘Jerusalem’, perhaps inspired by the views towards the Trundle from Henrietta’s home. Henrietta was also a close friend of the poet William Hayley, who introduced her to Blake. She lived in Lavant until her death in 1827.

Smith. But Joseph was no ordinary servant. He owned a property in East Lavant and, in 1841, was one of only eight men from East Lavant who was entitled to vote in Parliamentary elections. In addition, Joseph owned two of the expensive and exclusive seats in St Mary’s Church, seats which he rented out. Little about Joseph’s background is known, and the question that remains unanswered is why a man of such wealth remained in service all his life.

THe most tragic story uncovered was that of John Spershott. Born in 1816, John was the eighth and youngest child of Lavant’s miller. John was a labourer when he was caught on July 9, 1835, engaged in a crime so ‘unspeakable’ that the newspapers refused to say what it was. He was hanged in Horsham goal in August, 1835. It is not clear why an 18-year-old boy was hanged for his homosexual activity, or why the newly appointed rector, Charles Blagden, was prepared to have him buried in (what is now a rare) brick vaulted tomb in the graveyard.

THe heartfelt inscription ‘He is gone, he is gone, the dear Boy at whose birth I hail’d as a Stranger’ gives a clue about his parents' anguish. His family continued to live in Mid Lavant and participated fully in all the activities of the village.

Dean of Chichester from 1859 to 1875, Walter Hook, had made his name in Leeds where he promoted the need to educate children and make the church accessible to poorer people.

A Dean of his standing would usually be laid to rest in his cathedral. However, he chose instead to be modestly buried with his wife, Anna, in Mid Lavant’s churchyard, where ‘the breezy slopes of the Sussex Downs seemed, like Nature’s green pillows, to invite repose’.

One hundred and 31 men from Lavant served in the First World War and the churchyard of St Nicholas’, Mid Lavant, contains one Commonwealth War Graves Commission gravestone. THis stone belongs to Private Leonard Small. Leonard became a member of the Training Reserve Battalion, due to his young age, and died in Woolwich on February 3, 1917, London, along with three other lads aged 18 and 19. It is possible that there was an explosion at the Arsenal.

Richard Andrews was Lavant’s wheelwright.

Dated 1733, his headstone is the fifth oldest in the churchyard. As was the fashion of the time, it is elaborately and expensively carved, depicting a skull and crossbones. Eighteenth century, it would have been painted in bright colours. He was successful enough to be able to employ an apprentice, who wisely married Richard’s daughter.

Early festive present for fans is the PostSport aim for Chi after heavy loss to Oaks CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to go into the festive break on a high by sealing their fifth win from six to round off a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.

At the start of November, things looked glum for the Blues as just one win from their opening seven matches left them in the relegation zone of the London South One. But the return of a number of key players from injury has coincided with an upturn in form.

Four wins on the bounce gave all at Oaklands Park a lift and saw Scott Ashley's side rise into mid-table THe revival was halted last weekend as second-place Sevenoaks controlled a match and departed with a 28-3 victory.

But Chi can bounce back in style as they head along the A27 to play third bottom Tottonians tomorrow (2pm).

With the hosts winning just once at home all season and losing five on the bounce, Scott Ashley's side will head into the match as firm favourites.

THey will also have the added incentive of knowing that victory could see them end the first half of the season in the top half of the

table.

Blues will need to recover from what was a comprehensive defeat to a strong Oaks side at Oaklands Park last weekend.

With the wind behind them, Chi did get off to a strong start, pushing forward with attack after attack on the visitors' try line.

But Blues just could not get the score and had to settle for an early penalty for their early endeavours.

As the first half went on, the visitors began to get a foothold and managed to do what Chi would not do, crossing for a score just before the break. 3-7 at half time.

Into the second period and Blues were unable to match the forward power of Sevenoaks.

Not once but twice, the Kent side managed to barge their way over the Chi try line and take a 21-3 lead.

Blues tried to launch a series of attacks to close the gap on the scoreboard but the strong gusts against them were just as disruptive as Oaks' well-organised defence.

With ten minutes to go, the visitors crossed again to seal the bonus point and condemn Blues to their first defeat in five.

f Bognor host leaders Basingstoke tomorrow

BOGNOR RFC will face the ultimate test of their title hopes when they welcome leaders Basingstoke to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow.

THe Purple and Greens have found their form in recent weeks, stringing together a run of four bonus point victories in a row.

THe latest came last weekend when they crushed Tottonians IIs 59-0 away.

THe nine try blitz consolidated Bognor's third place position in Hampshire Premier and means they are ten points behind the leaders before their visit this weekend (2pm).

After suffering a 46-15 reverse at the hands of the table toppers back in September, the Purple and Greens will be looking for a much better performance against a side who have a 100 per cent record so far this campaign.

THey will need to get off to a quicker start than they did against Tottonians when five penalties in the first quarter allowed the home side to get on the front foot.

A skirmish that followed then reduced both sides to 14 with Darren Bidwell seeing red.

Bognor managed to break the deadlock just before the break as fly half Dave Sweeney threw a long pass to Jeremy Newton-Young who put winger Paddy Burnett over.

Into the second half and Bognor were much improved with Sam Newcombe (3), Josh Burgess, George Castleton and first team debutant Sam Hay (2) rounding off the scoring, with Sweeney adding extras to wrap up the 59-0 victory.

--Bognor Women's Rugby Team are recruiting for new team members.

No experience is needed to join the club as enthusiastic recruits will be taught everything they need to know by the coaches.

THe club has no age limit and all kit needed will be provided. All people need is a desire to have fun and learn a new game.

CROSS COUNTRY: Chichester Runners senior men's side face an uphill task to avoid relegation from the top division after two rounds of the Sussex Cross Country League.

A poor performance at the race in Brighton's Stanmer Park means they are seventh out of eight sides in the overall standings.

Evergreen James Baker was yet again first home for the club by scything through the field to finish ninth.

He was followed by St Mary’s college student Ben Morton who was a very good 28th with Chichester University’s Joe Godwood hot on his heels in 31st.

But dropouts due to injuries meant Chi had three big scores to round off their rankings which left them last in the match. A much better performance is required to avoid the drop when the competition resumes at Bexhill in February.

In the women's competition university student Alice Wright was a brilliant fourth followed by Alice Cox-Rusbridge (23rd) and Maggie King (29th).

Good scoring from Sophie Wright (52) brought the “A” team quartet home with a total of 108 points to keep the team in mid-table place in Division One. In the juniors, special mention must be made to the under 13 boys who finished third to move up to bronze medal position in the overall standings.

Second-place City set for YM clash after back-to-back wins

Chi stung by Wasps in cup CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith admits he is "gutted" after his side were the victims of an FA Cup shock against Crawley Wasps.

THe Oaklands Park side have been in fine fettle this season and currently sit second in the National Southern Premier.

But any hopes of taking that form into the premier national knockout competition were spoiled at the first hurdle when the lower ranked Wasps stung Chi last weekend.

THe 2-0 loss was a second defeat in a row for City - and they will be going all out to avoid a third.

Next up is another Sussex derby with a trip to South East Counties Premier side Bexhill United in the Sussex Challenge Cup on Sunday (2pm).

Speaking after the match, Smith said the loss to Crawley would hurt the club - from a playing and financial sense.

He said: "Everyone loves the FA Cup, we all want to play in it and after sampling the last 16 last season against Liverpool we wanted to do that again.

"We are playing well in league and, while they are a good side and are playing well, Crawley are still in the league below and we should be

winning these type of games."

Smith added: "It's a game of football and there are bigger things going on in the world but we need the money from the FA Cup so it's disappointing for us as a club."

Two goals from corners in the first half undid Chi as Kemina Webber and Darcey James got on the scoresheet.

In the second period Smith's side were a lot better. But, despite creating a number of half chances, they failed to breach the Wasps goal.

THe manager said: "We have not scored, that's our problem, putting the ball in the net "In the second half we looked good but we are not scoring goals and that's a big worry."

Chi will hope to find their shooting boots on Sunday against a side who are ranked well below them in the football pyramid. Win and they go into the Christmas break on a high.

Smith said: "We have a big game coming up. Bexhill will be the same [as Wasps], they will come and want to beat us.

"At training people are playing out of their skin but it's about getting to understand why players train well and when they get to game day and change their mentality."

CHICHESTER City can head into the Christmas period top of the tree - but only if they defeat leaders Horsham YMCA in a mouthwatering SCFL Premier clash.

Miles Rutherford's side head to Gorings Mead tomorrow (3pm) in second place, just three points behind the table toppers.

THanks to a superior goal difference built on the back of a meagre defensive record, Chi know victory at YM will see them leapfrog into top spot ahead of the packed holiday period.

It will be an early Christmas present for Rutherford who has seen his side struggle for consistency in recent weeks.

Defeats in the FA Vase and Sussex Senior Cup, combined with an away defeat to third-place Newhaven, had resulted in some frustration for the Oaklands Park side.

But that little hiccup seems in the past now as City prepared for the YM clash with two wins in the space of four days.

First was a 2-0 victory over struggling Shoreham at home with an Ellis Martin goal followed by a Gicu Iordache strike in injury time. THen in midweek, City cruised into the semi final of the RUR Cup with a 3-2 victory away at Eastbourne United in midweek.

Sids strike late to snap slump

SIDLESHAM struck late to snap a poor run of form just in time for the visit of league leaders Steyning Town tomorrow (3pm).

Steve Bailey's side have been beset with bad luck and poor play in the last few weeks as they have strung together a run of just one win in ten.

But Sids showed great belief to snatch the three points at fellow SCFL Division One side Billingshurst 2-1 last weekend.

Ben Dines had given Bailey's side the lead but, after Hurst equalised just after the break, it took a Tommy Lee-Smith strike five minutes

from time to wrap up the win.

THe victory means Sids are up to 12th in the 18 team division and among eight teams which could look to be involved in a fight against the drop in the second half of the campaign.

THat number was nine until bottom side St Francis Rangers, who were due to play Bailey's side on Tuesday, announced they would be folding with immediate effect.

It gave Sids a few extra days to prepare for the visit of Steyning who last lost in the league back in September.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Selsey suffered a setback in their surge up the table when they were defeated 2-1 by high-flying Alfold last weekend.

After falling behind early on, Ryan Morey brought Daren Pearce's side level until the Surrey side scored on the hour mark to take the win.

Despite the loss, Selsey remain in fifth, poised for a potential charge on the top spots in the new year.

Next up for Blues is a trip to mid-table outfit Wick tomorrow (3pm)- with manager Pearce setting his side the target of improving their consistency in front of goal.

THe Selsey boss said: "We are creating chances but recently we have been snatching at them. We need to be a bit more relaxed in front of goal. THat comes with the learning and allowing people time to improve and learning to be a bit more ruthless.

"We are not on a bad run. THe confidence around the camp is good and the young lads that have come in have taken their chances."

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be hoping to extend their winning streak to three as the Robins head to Worthing Town tomorrow (2pm).

THe Walton Lane side are now up to fourth bottom in the league after a 5-2 win over Littlehampton United last weekend. Conor Crabb, Ryan Coombes (2), Zackary Willett and Jake Lafferty scored for the Robins.

Lions hunt for their first victory in four PAGHAM will be out to stop the rot as they search for their first victory in four.

THe Lions have hit the wall in recent weeks, losing their unbeaten SCFL Premier record before being defeated in the last 64 of the FA Vase.

THe bad run continued last weekend against Saltdean United when, despite starting the match against ten due to the opponents' goalkeeper going to the wrong ground, Lions slumped to a 1-0 reverse against their fellow promotion chasers.

THose performances have seen Pagham slip from fourth to sixth in the league and in desperate need of a win when they welcome surprise package Crawley Down to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm).

A second home match in a week follows on Tuesday with the rearranged Sussex Senior Cup third round tie against Bostik Premier Burgess Hill on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Pagham are set to be without striker George Gaskin who was sent off in the defeat to Saltdean.

Joint-manager Tom Simmonds, who leads the team alongside Richie Hellen, said: "It is nice to test ourselves against teams who play in divisions above us "Last year we played five from the league above and I think we went through against four of them.

"It's a good opportunity for us all to see where we stand and I'm sure the lads will be up for it."

New additions likely as Rocks battle a defensive injury crisis Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce admits he has some work to do as the Rocks' injury crisis continues to cripple the club.

THe veteran manager takes his struggling side to in-form Kingstonian tomorrow (3pm) without five defensive players.

THose absences means Pearce is set to dip into his extensive contacts book in the coming days in the search for a short-term additions.

If he can find a bit of luck too then Rocks fans will be overjoyed as fortune seems to have departed his side in recent weeks with Bognor recording just one win in eight in the league.

THe latest was a 1-0 loss to leaders Dorking Wanderers last weekend, a match which saw Pearce's young side go toe-to-toe with the league leaders but emerge with no reward thanks to the harsh sending off of goalkeeper Dan Lincoln.

He said: "If we keep working hard enough then good fortune should come our way again "THey are top of the league but did they have any more desire than us? No. Were they fitter than us? No. Did they have more discipline than us? No. Did they create more chances than us? No. "But when you are in a league where everyone is even-steven, the difference between victory and defeat is a very thin line."

THat thin line against Dorking came with the sending off of Lincoln, a decision which

has since been overturned on appeal by the Rocks.

Pearce said: "It was the most important decision of the entire game and it was a wrong decision but these things happen.

"When I was in 26 and managing I would have been in front for FA if the ref did that but we have to learn from it.

"We have to take it on the chin and get on with it, hoping it’s a learning curve for the players. Overall, we did well and stayed in the game and Jimmy Muitt could have got a point for us at the end."

THe defeat extended a poor run for the Rocks which has seen them slip from third down into the bottom half in the Bostik Premier.

It means that despite still holding an unbeaten record away from home in the league (one win, seven draws) Rocks will be second favourites when they head to south London to face a team who are seventh and have won their last three matches.

THe absence Keaton Wood, Corey Heath, Joe Dandy and Calvin Davies (all injured) along with Gary Charman (work commitments) will be the major challenge.

When asked how he would solve the defensive crisis, Pearce said: "I have a bit of work to do", not ruling out new additions in the coming days.

He added: "We just have to battle on and work for each other and the results will come."

Hospital festive visit for Rocks BOGNOR players and officials are set to take time away from the pitch to bring some Christmas cheer for children in hospital.

Rocks supporters club chairman Ian Guppy, with the support of club mascot Rocky Bear and his daughters, Isabelle and Emelia, has organised gifts for the trip to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester later this month.

Manager Jack Pearce, coach Robbie Blake and the entire first team squad will try to raise the spirits of children on wards at the hospital by dishing out presents as they do so.

THe visit has been organised by Ian and former Bognor defender John Price in liaison with Love Your Hospital, the dedicated charity for the three hospitals that make up Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Ian said: "As a club, we’re proud of playing our part in the community and there is no better way of demonstrating that than trying to help put the smile on children who are feeling poorly.

"THe visit will hopefully raise some Christmas cheer and if we can raise some funds, too, all the better."

Love Your Hospital raises awareness and money to fund equipment, enable staff to provide outstanding health care.

TRY as we can, we just cannot seem to get the luck we deserve at the moment.

All the talk this week between Rocks fans will be on one moment which dominated last weekend's match against Dorking.

To be blunt - Dan Lincoln’s overturned red card was not good enough for me.

In the end, that decision cost us the match against Dorking Wanderers and we didn’t deserve to lose the match for me.

In the first half it was all about how many chances we created, but sadly, failed to take .

OK, in the second half, I will agree that Wanderers had the better of it but I think we were worthy of a draw at least.

One thing I noticed was that we managed to keep Jason Prior quiet all game, which was one positive to make note of.

It isn’t as if we are not creating chances, with Jimmy Muitt and Mason Walsh causing them all sorts of problems in the first half, along with Harvey Whyte going close.

It just does not seem to be falling our way though, which is very frustrating.

I have to say we are mired by injuries again.

Gary Charman took a knock away at Harlow and then had to come off at half time against Enfield Town with a bad back.

Walsh has also been struggling for 100 per cent fitness and at the Harlow game I thought that Dan Lincoln was going to have to be replaced.

I was glad I was wrong and he managed to continue. But I think the first team of 11 we have is strong, although the depth isn’t quite there yet.

With a young squad, it will be hard to maintain fantastic results week in and week out.

I said in my previous column that we needed to be top seven in the league by Christmas time to be in contention at the end of the season.

We appear to be dropping down a bit with recent results.

But I am still hopeful that we can beat anyone in this league.

We proved it at Tonbridge Angels and we showed great character to record a decent win at home to Wingate & Finchley.

But saying that, we have tough games ahead, starting with our trip to Corinthian Casuals to take on Kingstonian tomorrow.

THey are doing well in the Bostik Premier League as they sit in seventh position, whereas we have dropped down to 12th.

After such a great start to the season we are certainly in a poor run of form at present.

But like Robbie said in his recent interview - I believe it will get better.

Off the pitch, things are going really well - well, the away travel coaches are still very busy with fans travelling to many of the away games.

I really enjoy the banter on the Rocks on Tour coach trips and I would advise any fan to give it a try.

We will need all the support we can get as we enter 2019!

THe new cover at the Seasons end has gone down really well.

I like the green and white style, the fact it sheltered our fans from the rain in recent matches.

Plus I felt during matches the atmosphere has improved as well, as the Rocks faithful bash out the classics.

THere are some tasty local derbies coming up with the Worthing (El-Classicoast part 1) and Whitehawk away games sandwiching our home return fixture against Lewes on Boxing Day. So lots to look forward to - we just need the results to start coming and the smiles will start returning to people's faces again, I'm sure.
