Stubbing out litter in the city BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MEMBERS of the public caught dropping cigarette ends in the city's streets have reduced since October, 2017. THe offence, if caught, carries a fine of around £220 and further court costs of £185. On a Worthing Magistrates court register dated December 21, 2018, there were 15
offences listed showing members of the public caught depositing, dropping or throwing down cigarette butts in the four main shopping streets and Chichester Gate Leisure Park. THe offenders were mainly from Chichester but also came from Bognor Regis, Emsworth and Guildford. A project was set up in October, 2017, to take action on litter and fly-tipping in the city and beyond. Members of Chichester District
Council’s cabinet discussed an action plan to tackle problems with litter, dog fouling and fly-tipping across the area, following complaints from the public at the level of litter and mess across the area. At that time. the council was spending around £1million a year on cleaning the district and in a litter pick that took place over one day in June, 2017, 1,478 pieces of litter were picked up, which included food wrappers, receipts, bottles and crisp packets. 1,221 cigarette butts. Expenditure of £26,000 was agreed for resources to support public campaigns and the refurbishment and re-signing of a proportion of litter and dog bins. A district council spokesperson said: “Offences have reduced since the beginning of the project but remain relatively constant at between five and seven tickets being issued each day." See page three
