A public consultation will officially open on Monday, February 25, to give people the chance to express their views and opinions on the idea set out by West Sussex County Council and see how the roads where they live will be affected.

Miles Davy, West Sussex’s lead professional on the parking strategy team showed a presentation to members of the committee and the public which

outlined the proposals.

He said: " "We wanted to link parking management to other strategies such as the Chichester Vision and the growth programme.

"We knew at some point there was going to be a significant impact generally upon on street parking in Chichester.

"THe Chichester road space audit was our attempt to think about that more holistically, rather than to react to all of these problems when they happen and

come up with a parking strategy.

“It’s been a long process we have been part of. We have involved a number of parties through the process and we have now prepared some proposals and we are now ready to share these ideas with the city.

“What we are looking at is a city-wide parking management plan. Literally, we are speaking about the entire city and urban area."

MEMBERS of Chichester District Council's cabinet have agreed budget spending plans for 2019-2020, which includes a net budget requirement of £13,829,600.

THe reports which councillors looked at have been agreed and will be recommended to full council next month.

THe government announced that as a low taxing authority, Chichester can raise its council tax by £5 or three per cent, whichever is greater. £5 equates to 3.2 per cent and would generate an additional £266,700 per year.

THe council will set the budget and council tax in March, 2019. THe report which cabinet members looked at during its meeting on Tuesday concentrated on budget spending plans which are a financial estimate of the resources required to deliver council services.

THis council tax increase is the average increase based on Band D properties and the additional income this generates will be used to assist the council in meeting its long-term objectives to protect public services to its community.

Cllr Eileen Lintill said: "I certainly support the proposal of £5 increase in council tax. I think it goes towards providing really good services for our district and I think others are putting it up considerably more.

City's ex-priest is extradited from Australia on sex assault charges A FORMER vicar from Chichester has appeared in court in Sussex having been extradited from Australia to face sex assault charges.

Meirion Griffiths, 80, of Coachwood Way, Maddington, Perth, Western Australia, appeared at Crawley magistrates' court on THursday, January 31, charged on an extradition warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates' Court in London in December, 2016.

THe warrant alleges that he committed several indecent assaults against a girl then in her late teens in the mid-1970s, and several indecent assaults against a woman then in her mid-twenties in 1982.

All the offences are alleged to have taken place at various locations in West Sussex.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to appear at

Portsmouth Crown Court on March 1.

Griffiths had arrived at Heathrow Airport on a flight from Australia, in the custody of Sussex Police officers.

THe prosecution follows an investigation by detectives after the allegations were received in 2014, and follows subsequent court hearings in Western Australia after his arrest in November, 2017, by Western Australia Police on the authority of the extradition warrant.

At the time of the alleged offences, Griffiths was Church of England vicar of St Pancras in Chichester.

THroughout the investigation, Sussex Police have had full co-operation from the Chichester Diocese of the Church of England.

Police emphasised that there were no current safeguarding issues or risks for anyone connected with St Pancras Church.

Planetarium welcomes its oldest male visitor

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE CITY'S Planetarium welcomed its oldest male visitor through the doors last week.

Wartime pilot Jimmy Birchal attended a public show at the South Downs Planetarium on January 27.

Jimmy, who will be 96 this year, was a Flight Lieutenant who flew Lancasters in the Second World War and he has always had an interest in the night sky.

As a resident in Selsey, Jimmy was a neighbour of the late Sir Patrick Moore, who flew as a navigator in the war.

Jimmy greatly enjoyed his visit to the Planetarium, watching a show about

the Northern Lights, the aurora borealis.

He recalled how he had often seen the Northern Lights while training as a pilot in Canada during the war.

He had an eventful wartime career, finally being shot down and ending the war as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 3, the Luftwaffe-run POW camp which held captured Western Allied air force personnel.

THe camp is best known for the escape plot by Allied POWs in March, 1944, which was the basis for the 1963 film, THe Great Escape.

Jimmy spent some time talking to the Planetarium’s principal lecturer, Dr John Mason, and several of the keen volunteers who run the establishment.

One of these, Ray Howell, was a

former Boeing 747 captain with British Airways. Jimmy also met the waxwork of his former neighbour, Sir Patrick, commenting how lifelike it was.

"It was a great pleasure to welcome Jimmy to the Planetarium," said Dr Mason. "He has had an amazing life and it was fascinating hearing about his many experiences. As far as we know, Jimmy is our oldest male visitor out of the nearly 250,000 visitors we have welcomed since the Planetarium opened in 2001."

THe Planetarium’s oldest female visitor was a 96-year old woman who had served with the Special Operations Executive in the Second World War. To find out more about the planetarium, visit: southdowns.org.uk

From page one "So why are we looking at the entire city? We know that there are a number of existing parking issues in a number of locations across the city.

“We also know that there will be a great deal of growth in the city over the next 10 to 15 years. However you stack it, there is going to be a temptation with that growth for many people to bring in cars and park in the restricted areas across the city. Not everyone likes to pay to park in a car park.

“Another reason is displacement which is where cars move from one area to another when we bring in restrictions. By coming up with a citywide plan, we effectively prevent that displacement. We will also get a much clearer idea of parking demands.

We have a pretty good idea already but when you look at unrestricted roads outside the city, it is very difficult to ascertain who parks there and how long for."

Mr Davey showed councillors and members of the public pictures of how roads may look with the parking management plan in place. He said: “A large part of our initial proposals involve quite a new restriction which has come out from the Department of Transport in the last year. It’s known as a permit holder beyond this point restriction. Quite simply, what it

means is that you have zonal entrants to a cul-de-sac or small network of roads and beyond that point, only permit holders can park there. We don’t need to mark out bays, which saves us a lot of work and maintenance costs. THere would be repeater signs but visually it is a lot less intrusive.

“It’s important to say that no decisions have been made on this yet.

We have at least another consultation to go through after this upcoming one.”

County council leader Louise Goldsmith said: "It's very good that we have got it to reality and consultation and I'd like to thank the officers for the work. THis has not been done anywhere else in the county. It's an innovative way and it's going to be quite challenging for some people but the system we have got does not work.

I hope everyone sees it for what it is, to really make an improvement."

` Collision witnesses POLICE are asking anyone who may have seen a two-car collision at the junction of the A286 Birdham Road and Wophams Lane, near Apuldram, south of Chichester, on Saturday morning, to get in touch with them.

THe incident happened shortly after 11am and involved a red Kia Picanto, driven by a 93-year-old man from Bognor Regis, and a black Vauxhall Zafira, driven by a 53-yearold woman from Hambrook.

Both drivers sustained bruising and were treated at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, but the front seat passenger in the Kia, a 96-yearold woman from Bognor Regis, suffered serious injuries.

She was flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

THe junction was closed to traffic for more than five hours while the incident was being dealt with.

Anyone who saw what happened, or who may have dash-cam footage of the crash, is asked to contact Sussex Police online or by phoning 101, quoting Operation Dovenby.

` Kitchen fire month FEBRUARY is kitchen fire safety month and throughout February West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is raising awareness.

In 2017/18, the service attended 270 fires started in the kitchen – accounting for 60 per cent of all fires in homes.

Five Ways helps teenagers' health

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A WELLBEING project has been launched to help teenagers learn skills to look after their mental health.

Since October, 2017, Natures Way Foods has been working with Chichester District Council’s Youth Engagement team to deliver the successful Five Ways to Wellbeing project in local primary schools. THis year, the project is being offered to secondary school pupils for the first time.

THe growth of the project follows a successful pilot with a group of young carers of the same age group, which took place last year. All of the young people who took part reported that they learned new strategies to use in their daily lives.

THe project asks young people to focus on five positive actions they can incorporate into their daily lives as individuals and also as part of their communities. THey are: • Connect: encouraging children to strengthen and broaden their range of relationships and social networks.

It encourages them to spend time with their friends and family while staying safe on the internet.

• Be active: stresses that being active is for people of all ages and does not need to be intense physical activity, you just need to raise your heartbeat and have fun.

• Keep learning: learning can be taken out of the classroom, skills and ideas

can be learned everywhere.

• Take notice: asks children to take time to stop, become aware of their surroundings and listen to their thoughts and feelings about them.

• Give: focuses on how giving and receiving acts of kindness, whether small or large, can make people feel happier and more satisfied about life.

Activities such as brain aerobics help improve memory, further brain function, and concentration. Songs and dances improve co-ordination, team-work, and powerful relaxation. THe sessions also touch on internet safety and include a snack and chat session to explore healthy new tastes.

“We are so pleased with the great results of this programme and the positive impact it’s having on young people’s lives,” said Stephanie Jones, business insight and communications manager at Natures Way Foods.

“When we first partnered with the council's Five Ways to Wellbeing team we talked about expanding to the local secondary schools and it’s great to see that this is happening.”

Cllr Eileen Lintill, the council's cabinet member for community services, said: “Five Ways to Wellbeing shows children some essential ways to help them look after their emotional wellbeing both now and as they progress in their lives.

Today’s young people experience a variety of pressure, more than ever before, and as a society we are much more aware of how this affects our young people’s wellbeing."

A meet and tea with artists of popular exhibition in the city ARTISTS from the latest exhibition at the Oxmarket Gallery were on hand to meet members of the public on Saturday.

Creative Redemption is by five talented artists, who have all benefited from the restorative powers of their personal creative process and come together to present the displays in the gallery in East Street.

Helen Frost, Christine Habib, Nicola Hancock, Helio Teles and Julie Turner all got together for the Meet the Artists event held at the Oxmarket Gallery from 2pm to 4pm.

Artist Nicola Hancock said: "We had a very rewarding and successful ‘Meet the Artist’ event on Saturday.

"Trauma and wounds are part of the rich life we have as human

beings and visitors found our work thought provoking and sometimes uncomfortable. But the redeeming quality of the work and creative process was clearly tangible.

"Each artist's investigation is particular to their own life and circumstance, but visitors appreciated the unified feel of the exhibition, enjoying the common threads and contrasts between the work. At one point, a group of viewers were spotted sitting in a row, transfixed by the works of art while silently munching cake!

"As artists, we appreciated the thoughtful attention of our visitors; the conversations and comments left in the visitors' book, inspiring us to carry on our creative journeys."

Council agrees the funds to upgrade city CCTV cameras

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ELEVEN CCTV cameras in Chichester city centre are set to be upgraded.

At Chichester District Council's cabinet meeting on Tuesday, members agreed to recommend to full council the upgrade and reinstatement of two cameras at the multi-storey car park at Avenue de Chartres and the upgrade of a further 11 around the city.

CCTV was first introduced to Chichester in 1996 and a number of the cameras still date back to this time.

THe cameras are now considered to be outdated and have not kept pace with current technological changes and no longer provide the surveillance quality necessary to protect the busy city centre.

Cabinet members agreed to recommend to full council the release of £165,000 from reserves to fund the necessary changes.

Divisional manager communities at the council, Pam Bushby, said: "THere is a value to CCTV and that is appreciated not just by ourselves but by other partners.

"Recently, we had a police operation across the city centre and CCTV played a very big part in that, particularly in the arrest of somebody at the skate park.

"However, it was noted that had we had the reinstatement of the cameras at

Avenue de Chartres, it probably would have had a much bigger impact on that operation."

THe two cameras in the multi-storey car park were removed in 2012 as part of a CCTV review.

However, since that time, the area around Avenue de Chartres has seen an increase in crime and antisocial behaviour.

THe current annual allocation of assets renewal programme funding would only allow a piecemeal replacement of cameras at a rate of one or two a year.

Cllr Roger Barrow said: "I certainly support this, for the safety of our residents, shoppers and visitors. In this day and age, a high-quality CCTV system is vital."

Cllr Susan Taylor agreed. She said: "I very much support this. I know in the past, over the years, some people have complained about CCTV due to the privacy aspect but it's no doubt that it does create safety and give a sense of security to visitors so I totally support this."

Cllr Adrian Moss, who is not a cabinet member, was given special permission to speak at the meeting. He said: "I share your views that in the past, many people have shown concerns about CCTV but I think it is absolutely essential.

"I think it's really important that we have good monitoring of the Avenue de Chartres because we don't have

the level of police presence that we had in the past."

Cllr Moss also asked if the CCTV could be used to monitor footfall as well but it was explained the cameras did not have a counter on them and that Chichester Business Improvement District (BID) had two methods of calculating footfall.

One was a camera specifically designed to count footfall and the other was use of mobile phone tracking data.

If approved, work on replacing cameras will start in April. It is hoped the project will be completed by the end of March, 2020.

On Wednesday, January 30, police received a report of a burglary to a site office in Emsworth where electrical equipment was stolen.

In Winden Avenue, Chichester, on THursday, January 31, a vehicle was broken into. THe back window was smashed and logs taken from the vehicle. Serial 0191 31/1.

THe same day, a vehicle and summer house were broken into in Main Road, Nutbourne. Money was stolen from the vehicle.

In Hangar Drive, Tangmere, on Sunday, February 3, a vehicle was broken into overnight and a phone charger and personal belongings stolen from the vehicle.

Musical talent called to attend city's workshops and enter a competition NEW song-writing workshops are coming to Chichester this half-term.

Held on THursday, February 21, for children aged eight to 18, the workshops, run by professional songwriters, aim to help develop song-writing talents.

Rowena Atkins, founder and chief executive of Song Academy, said: "I started Song Academy ten years go and have many clubs and workshops running in London.

"Now, we’re expanding across the south coast and searching for creative and musical young people who want to write their own original songs!"

THe workshops, being held at the Chichester Music Academy in Globe House, are split into two sessions. THe first will be held from 10am

Legal issues continue over Market Avenue traffic lights PLANS to relocate a pedestrian crossing in the city centre are still ongoing.

THe crossing at Market Avenue and St Pancras was moved when planning permission was granted for a convenience store in Unicorn House.

However, Sainsbury's pulled out of the move and it opened as restaurant, Giggling Squid.

In June last year, Cllr Jamie Fitzjohn, from West Sussex County Council, said the lights were put too close to the junction of Market Avenue, which means they had to synchronise with Market Avenue.

He also stated that the crossing was causing major problems with congestion and the highways department had agreed to put it back.

A BUSINESS plan for the city's museum was agreed by Chichester councillors on Tuesday morning.

THe district council built the Novium Museum in Tower Street in Chichester after it relocated from its premises in Little London and incorporated the Tourism Information Centre from South Street inside.

THe museum opened in July, 2012, in Tower Street with the premises costing £6.09m to construct, fit out and relocate artefacts.

THe district council sold the former museum building and adjoining Tower Street site for a combined figure of £2.465million in order to supplement capital costs of the new premises. former Tourist Information THe Centre building was leased from July, 2016,onwards generating an additional £495,000 per annum.

Free entry replaced the initial charge from November, 2014, and the museum has since been working on generating additional income to replace the lost entry fee income.

Cllr Roger Barrow said: "I think we should all be very proud of the progress that the Novium has made in the last couple of years.

"It's building a very good reputation and I fully appreciate the reasons for not charging an entry. Clearly that has had a significant difference to visitor numbers."

Cllr Barrow asked how much they were hoping to receive in visitor donations.

Stephanie THorndyke, museum manager said: "We are hoping to get around the £11,000 mark this year and we are hoping to increase that to £12,000 next year. Of course, as we look to grow our audience numbers, as long as we can maintain and grow the per head numbers that should be an upward curve."

An initial proposal was approved by the cabinet last month to support additional feasbility works to investigate options of reconfiguration of the front of house areas, glazing over the Roman Baths, an improved cafe and improvements to exhibition infrastructure.

Council leader Tony Dignum added: "THanks to it's excellence management, the Novium Museum has become a key part of our city's cultural offer alongside the gallery, the theatre and the cathedral and you can see how the donations would be over £10,00 because last year, they attracted 50,000 visitors and they are looking at something above that this year.

"It's no secret that the current building has some physical limitations and there is no reason why we should live with those forever and that is why the business plan seeks to make some adjustments to aspects of the structure next year.

"It actually costs less in real terms than the old museum and that's before taking into account that in those days the old tourism centre was in South Street in a retail shop in which we now earn a useful rent."

` Attractions event ATTRACTIONS from the local area will be joining together for an annual leaflet exchange event.

Visit Chichester, the official destination management organisation responsible for promoting tourism and supporting the visitor economy in the Chichester region, is organising its annual leaflet exchange, a show to highlight the range of attractions, events, shops and dining options available to residents and visitors around the region.

THe event will take place at Chichester Festival THeatre on Wednesday, March 6, between 10am and 1pm, and is open to the public to attend free of charge.

Husband and wife team, Doug and Rachel Ross, from Chichester, set up Square House Coffee Co in November, 2017, and feel their ethical stance sets them apart from the competition.

Doug said: "After years of touring the world as a professional DJ and sampling coffee from the four corners, I learned a lot about the coffee culture.

"When we got married a few years ago we wanted to do something in business together so this seemed perfect as we are both huge coffee fans."

THe business is onlinebased and the coffee is all ethically sourced.

Doug continued: "We don’t run a physical shop, just an online shop and deliver coffee directly to people's doors.

"THe reaction has been amazing and business is going well. We have a pretty firm stance on being an ethical company and feel this has set us apart from our competition "We both grew up in families that cared about people and supporting what is right in this world.

"Our families showed us how to care/support others and we

saw the impact this had which was really inspiring.

Returning the plastic event sees the city shoppers cutting back on waste f Plastic was returned

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PLASTIC returners gathered outside Marks & Spencer in East Street, Chichester, on Saturday, to encourage more visitors to the city to reduce waste.

Despite a very cold morning, the manager and staff of M&S gave campaigners a warm welcome and encouraged them in their efforts.

THeir deposit bottle scheme petition picked up many signatures and the group was pleased to be able to engage a lot of chilly shoppers in discussion about how and where to recycle different sorts of waste products.

Campaigner Lucinda Gibson-House said: "We gave out lots of information leaflets and explained about the plastic water bottle refill scheme as well.

"THe manager of M&S spoke to us about some of their initiatives to cut back on waste and reduce plastics in store, including replacing all plastic cutlery in the café, offering non-plastic cutlery at the tills and a new initiative to offer

different, longer lasting, reusable bags.

"It was an interesting and very useful day for us and we hope that those we spoke to will inform friends and family to create a ripple effect of information and a keener awareness of how much plastic we all consume and waste."

Sarah Sharp, city councillor for Chichester south, who brought the issue of single-use plastic to the city council in December, also wants people to do more in 2019 and get involved with recycling company, TerraCycle.

TerraCycle's idea is to recycle the nonrecyclable, from coffee capsules to pens, to plastic gloves.

Cllr Sharp said: "THis was the third #returntheplastic event organised locally and it is proving a continuing success.

"People want to do more. Customers want to know where to bring their ecobricks and how they can get involved.

"We are hearing little actions undertaken by each different supermarket but we can't stress enough the enormity of the problem and how we collectively need to do more.

"I have contacted several schools about

"It is easy to make small changes keep your waste plastic and return it to the supermarket the following week, or better still, bring in your own container to buy from the fresh fish/meat or deli counter instead of buying it prepackaged. You can bring in your own paper bags to weigh out your fruit and veg. THe key thing is that it is now socially acceptable to say 'no' to plastic."

Bognor Regis and Chichester #returntheplastic is an active group planning regular events outside different supermarkets on the first Saturday of every month.

In December, the group campaigned outside Tesco’s in Bognor Regis and in January they went to

Sainsbury's in Chichester.

Last month, Chichester officially launched its refill scheme programme to encourage participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and other businesses to sign up to the free Refill app and put a sticker in their window alerting passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to fill up their water bottle for free.

THe initiative would help to see a reduction in single-use plastic bottles being purchased and thrown away.

Alternatively, shoppers can join the nationwide campaign and take individual action to leave plastic waste at the till after having bought goods.

` Stagecoach funds STAGECOACH’S Chichester bus depot raised a grand total of £607.02 over the Christmas period for national charity ‘Save the Children’.

THroughout December, charity collections took place on the ‘Santa bus’, which travelled around Chichester and Bognor Regis daily until Christmas. THe total from these collections came to £117.

THe other £490.02 was raised by head office staff who took part in the charity's national Christmas Jumper Day. Mike Armitage, Chichester area operations manager, said: "We were delighted to support the Save the Children charity over the festive period and pleased that so many customers were generous with their donations."

Save the Children is an international organisation which promotes children’s rights, provides relief and helps supports children in developing countries.

The magic of harbour walks

Harbour Magic is for people living in Chichester and the surrounding areas and harbour village and a website was launched by Jo Losack just three weeks ago.

Jo came up with the idea in September last year as she lives on her own and needed to improve her social life and now has 33 members in the group.

She said: "I have lots of friends but mainly couples that were doing things together at the weekends so I needed to get out and meet like-minded people who loved the same sort of things as I do - the great outdoors, good food, good wine and good company!

"THere are lots of gym memberships and sport clubs to join but I wanted to offer variety - after all, it’s the spice of life!

"I also like to try new things, go to new places and just love to meet new people. I couldn’t find anything that fitted the bill so I just thought I would start my own club!"

Jo decided she wanted the group to be for local people who loved living in Chichester and the surrounding areas.

She continued: "We are spoilt for beautiful places to go and have so many really top-notch restaurants and cafes to go to in the area, you can never tire of things to do.

"Harbour Magic holds regular monthly events which include walks around the harbour and in the South Downs,

suppers at our many local country and harbour pubs, and breakfasts out.

"We have a Culture Vultures event to include the arts and an Explore Even More event which takes us a bit further afield.

"We also have a monthly Do Something Different event - the last one was Alpaca walking! We’ve done a pottery workshop and Indian cooking and I’ve got lots of ideas for activities

for the future."

People can view the next two months' activities ahead and book straight away using the website.

"I’ve set this up because there must be others who live in the area who are alone and just want companionship and fun and to enjoy the area where they live," said Jo. "If you are thinking of joining , I offer a free month’s membership so that

you can come and try a few activities and events and meet some of the lovely members.

"It can be a bit daunting at first if you don’t know anyone - but just give it a try and you won’t look back - everyone is very welcoming and all in the same boat so completely understand when a new member joins."

THe Sussex Police and Crime Panel was asked to give its views on the force’s budget for 2019/20, priorities and an increase in precept of £24 a year for the average household.

Presenting the budget, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said the precept increase would help Sussex Police further increase the number of police community support officers, police officers and specialist staff.

At the meeting on Friday, Mrs Bourne told the panel: “I know any decision to increase the amount we are asking people to pay is not an easy one to take, and not one that I take lightly.

“But despite the increase we will still have the fifth lowest precept in England and Wales, and 75 per cent of households will pay an additional £24 a year or less.”

A working group set up to scrutinise the budget as it developed reported back to

the panel suggesting that the maximum increase could be supported if the panel were satisfied that issues with the 101 service – the police’s non-emergency number - would be urgently addressed and there was more visible policing.

Panel members asked for assurances the additional money would address the needs of communities in Sussex and deal with the issues most important to residents.

Mrs Bourne spoke about focus groups she had run across Sussex to “get under the bonnet” and find out what the priorities of different groups would be.

She said there were common themes to come out of these groups, including concerns about the lack of visible policing, the difficulty in reporting crime and frustration with using the 101 numbers and the lack of a local policing contact.

She said additional investment would be made to enable the recruitment of 100 more police community support officers, 50 more police officers and 50 more specialist staff.

THis, she said, would help to prevent more deaths and serious injuries on Sussex roads, improve the service for both 101 and 999 calls, increase the number of community officers by 50

per cent, and enable the force to more effectively support vulnerable people and minority communities and identify and address hidden crime.

But the commissioner warned the panel the impact of the increase would not be seen immediately and that recruitment and training would take some time.

Following the meeting, Cllr Bill Bentley, chairman of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, said: “Asking residents to pay more is never a decision we take lightly, but the panel was reassured that the additional money would be used to

address the issues our residents tell us are most important to them.”

Public questions to the commissioner included concerns about the police’s response to speeding vehicles, and a report was presented by the commissioner on the work being done to deal with gangs and organised criminal networks exporting illegal drugs using dedicated mobile phone lines and exploiting children and vulnerable residents.

THe next meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel takes place on Friday, April 26.

CHICHESTER'S branch of music shop HMV has been confirmed as one of the stores to be closed after the company went into administration.

Canadian firm Sunrise Records has emerged as the buyer of the collapsed music chain, beating competition including from Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley.

THe firm will buy 100 stores out of administration, securing 1,487 jobs.

But 27 stores will close, including the one in East Street, resulting in 455 redundancies in total.

Sunrise Records chief executive Doug Putman said he was "delighted to acquire the most iconic music and entertainment business in the UK".

THe branch in Chichester closed it's doors on Tuesday.

Other stores up for closure include Bath, Bristol, Reading and Plymouth and the flagship branch in Oxford Street, the location of its first store.

THe news comes just days after retail giant, House of Fraser closed its doors in West Street on January 26.

Council funds from Brexit EVERY district and borough council in West Sussex is to receive thousands of pounds from the government to help them deal with Brexit.

However, one leader has said councils would be better off spending the money on ‘tinned food and paraffin stoves’.

In a written statement to Parliament, local government secretary James Brokenshire announced a £56.5m pot to be divided among county and district councils over the next two years.

County councils will receive £175k, while district and borough councils will receive £35k over the same period.

Unitary authorities, such as Brighton & Hove City Council, will receive £210,000, while an extra £1.5m will be split between councils facing an impact from local ports.

Mr Brokenshire said: “THis funding will help councils to adapt to changes caused

by Brexit, while still protecting vital local services.”

None of the councils in West Sussex has yet been told when they will receive the money, so have no idea how it will be used.

When asked, a spokesman for Chichester District Council said: “Until we know more about the amounts and when we’ll be receiving it we can’t comment at this stage."

Mr Brokenshire said: “Local government will play a critical role in making a success of Brexit at the local level.

“My department is committed to ensuring councils have the support and the funding they need to prepare for an orderly exit from the EU and do appropriate contingency planning.”

THe decision was made by the cabinet member for safer,stronger communities on Friday.

Command and mobilising systems are used to dispatch fire and rescue service resources to emergency incidents.

THe decision follows a full assessment of the options available for alternative mobilising systems with other fire and rescue services.

THe Surrey Fire and Rescue Service system has a proven track record for reliability, with the capacity to handle additional call volume and demonstrates good value for money.

Debbie Kennard, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “THe safety of residents in West Sussex is an absolute priority and that’s why it’s important we have a fire service that can mobilise quickly and effectively.

“We have taken a thorough and indepth look at the options available and the one we are proposing is tried and tested, while offering good value for money.”

THe aim is to migrate to the new system by mid-February, 2020. THe decision is subject to a seven day call-in period.

THe county's fire service is at the heart of West Sussex County Council's communities and public protection directorate, working to support communities to become safer, stronger and more resilient through a combination of prevention, protection and response activities.

CHICHESTER and Bognor Regis residents will continue to have access to justice now that rooms at Chichester District Council are being used for court sittings.

THe council has agreed to provide a space to hold civil and family hearings after the closure of the Chichester Combined Courts following a shake-up of provision by the Ministry of Justice.

A pilot for the service took place last July which proved successful, and now Chichester District Council has offered space in its committee rooms for up to 50 Fridays per year.

THe first official sitting took place on Friday, January 4.

THe types of cases being heard are non-criminal and those that are considered to be lowest risk, including small claims and possession cases.

Chichester District Council leader Tony Dignum, said: “Last year’s trial went extremely well and so we are very pleased to be able to offer this provision and support to the Ministry of Justice.

"We have worked very closely with HM Courts and Tribunals Service to create a solution that helps keep on-going court provision in the city, and ensures that residents continue to have local access to justice when they need it.

"THe arrangement will also save the taxpayer money by providing better use of government buildings.”

John Miller, of the courts and tribunals service, said: “We are delighted that hearings are now taking place at Chichester District Council offices.

"THis is great news for local court users and their continued access to justice."

Delayed transfer of care figures

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk DELAYED transfer of care figures for West Sussex are at their lowest point in more than three-and-a-half-years, according to the latest figures available (November, 2018).

Working with NHS colleagues, social care staff play an important role in helping keep the number of patients whose discharge from hospital is delayed as low as possible.

In West Sussex, these teams have helped maintain delayed transfer of care levels below the national minimum set by government for five out of the last six months.

Ensuring the right onward care or care package is in place for patients who are ready to be discharged from hospital is vital, both for the wellbeing and recovery of the patients who no longer need acute hospital care and for ensuring there is sufficient hospital capacity for those who need to be admitted.

Achieving the statutory minimum for ‘delayed transfers of care’ requires a huge team effort across adult operations, adult hospital teams, brokerage, commissioning and contracting and as a result of these co-ordinated efforts the November, 2018, level was the lowest level since April, 2015, down to 336 ‘delayed days’ against a national target of a minimum of 517 ‘delayed days’.

Cabinet member for adults and health, Amanda Jupp, said: "It is great news that we

have been able to support so many people to find suitable onward care when they are ready to leave hospital. We are very aware that the pressure on acute hospitals continues year round and that this good work needs to continue, so we are doing all we can to help manage this pressure.

"In the short-term, we are about to invest in further care and support at home. As the year progresses, work will be carried out jointly with our health partners, on the Step Up Step Down programme to develop Home First services, which will get more people out of hospital and into their own home, rather than into another bed.

"THis on-going work will ensure that more people are able to return home in a timely way and give them the best opportunity to maintain their independence."

Director of operations (resilience) at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Jeannie Baumann, said: “We welcome the support West Sussex County Council provides, helping patients to be safely discharged from hospital once they are medically fit to leave.

"As an acute care provider, we have a duty to ensure our beds are occupied only by people in need of acute hospital treatment, and so we encourage patients to accept the first offer that enables them to leave hospital.

“On occasion, this may not be their first choice but our social care and community healthcare colleagues will continue to support patients to secure a long term solution to meet their care needs."

Education minister visits city school for a special scheme PUPILS from Funtington Primary School welcomed some special guests to their school on Friday.

West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith joined Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb, minister of state at the Department for Education, at the school.

THe school is rated ‘good’ by Ofsted and is small with just 87 pupils.

During the visit, Mr Gibb met pupils who were taking part in the Prince William Award scheme.

THe scheme helps young people to build character, resilience and confidence with the help of the education charity, SkillForce, whose instructors have served in the British Armed Forces and who bring their

experience to teach the young about the importance of teamwork, resilience and self-discipline.

Mr Gibb said: "I was very pleased to be invited to visit this small rural school and to meet some of the staff and pupils. THe school has a supportive and friendly ethos.

"THe pupils I met were hugely enthusiastic about taking part in the Prince William Award Scheme."

St Blaise fair proves popular at Boxgrove

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk OVER £1,400 was raised at the annual Boxgrove Priory St Blaise Fair on Saturday.

THe event coincides with the feast of St Blaise and was held in order to raise funds for THe Kwa Mkono - disabled children hospital in Tanzania.

THe funds raised on Saturday will go towards a new vehicle fit for African roads.

THe vehicle is required to fetch food from the nearest town, two hours away, and prosthetic checks in Tanga, which is over three hours away.

THe Rev Ian Forrester said he felt there was a fabulous sense of working together, of generosity, and fun at the event which included traditional Morris dancing.

He said: "Twenty years ago, the annual Boxgrove fundraiser for what was then the Kwa Mkono Polio Hostel for children, was held in the old Boxgrove Village Hall. It was a jumble sale which netted around £300.

"With the improvements to the priory building in 2009, we established a much stronger event, drawing in more people for a market place which now included books, electronic media, craft items and various ‘fun’ stalls and competitions.

"Like a medieval village market, the St Blaise Fair is now held in the nave

of the church.

"Saint Blaise is one of Boxgrove Priory’s saints, and is also patron of those with throat complaints and of sheep farmers.

"From 2010, we have enjoyed the presence and performances of one of two morris dancing groups. For many years, the Sussex Martlets danced, now it is the Fishbourne Mill Morris."

Tempting hot food was also on offer with homemade carrot and ginger soup and hot lamb or cheese rolls which proved to be very popular.

A raffle, bottle tombola, books, and bric-a-brac stall all enjoyed a constant flow of visitors and in total the fair has raised over £1,400 which is an increase on last year’s total.

By Kelly Wickham Trial By Laugter Until February 9 Chichester Festival Theatre, Oaklands Park, Chichester PO19 6AP www.cft.org.uk IAN HISLOP would know a thing or two about libel and slander, particularly from his role as editor of Private Eye. His play, co-written with Nick Newman about bookseller, publisher and satirist, Willian Hone, who stands trial for 'impious blasphemy and seditious libel' in 1817, was not quite as it seemed.

THe ideas are still relevant today

and certainly to the newspaper industry but the humour was somewhat lost on an audience who seemed a lot less thin on the ground after the interval.

Credit must be given to the actors who worked with what they had and particularly to Willian Hone's ally, political cartoonist George Cruikshank, played by Peter Losasso, particularly when he was portraying an inebriated friend celebrating the success of the first trial.

THe slapstick comedy and jokes by Jeremy Lloyd playing Prince Regent seemed a little out of place on the stage.

THe play follows the success of the sold-out run of THe Wipers Times at Chichester last year, but perhaps Ian Hislop and Nick Newman should have quit when they were ahead.

Co written with award winning songwriter Gwyneth Herbert, Bognor Regis-based Olivia says: "I saw her perform at Blakefest in Bognor Regis in 2017, and felt inspired to join one of her intensive songwriting and singing courses in London. She was so incredibly generous, staying after the group session in the evening to help me develop the song.

"I felt really honoured. She has an incredible ear for music and composition."

Olivia has a flair for the unusual and a unique way of describing her emotions that is both refreshing and utterly her own which

is also well evidenced on the album.

She continues: "Lyrics are important to me, I have always loved poetry too, so words do excite me as much as a really memorable melody. I hope people will enjoy the story of Leave A Little Light On." THis year also sees her gearing up for some exciting live opportunities, not least of which is a slot performing at THe Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show this March at the Worthing Pier Southern Pavilion.

Outdoor fun while supporting charity IF YOU like the idea of supporting a charity by having fun, the Aldingbourne Country Centre, off the A27, near Fontwell, is well worth a visit.

Close to the South Downs in acres of countryside, there are tranquil woodland walkways, the chance for wildlife-spotting and a natural playground.

In an ideal outdoor setting for children, other attractions include an open farm, ride-on tractors and a castle playground.

Goats, a Shetland pony, guinea pigs, donkeys, chickens, pigs, alpacas and ducks are among the animals waiting to greet young visitors to the open farm. For a small charge, they can be fed and greeted face to face.

Guinea pigs can be held and stroked - they are all very friendly THere are

sanitising hand washing facilities on site and visitors can spend as long as they want to enjoy the farm and chat to its experts.

For anyone who wants to get even closer to nature, the centre offers a pig mud bath experience as an unusual gift, which is educational and fun for individuals or in pairs and must be booked in advance at £30 for a 30-minute session. A certificate, photo card and badge are offered after the piggy fun for which height restrictions apply.

To make a visit to Aldingbourne complete, visitors can enjoy homecooked food and drinks in the on-site cafe while the shop has many unusual and attractive craft and gift items for sale.

Beware the bears of Hotham Park BEARS, wolves, stags and wild boar can be found in Hotham Park, in the centre of Bognor Regis - but there's no need to panic.

THey are some of the life-size props which add to the fun around the park's 18-hole adventure golf course, Wildforest Falls.

THe inspiring course is designed to be both thrilling and educational as each of the animal models has a nearby information board so both young and old can learn some fun and enlightening facts about each species as they play.

A beaver dam complete with waterfall and fallen log putt-through, a tree stump vortex and ‘Hotham Clock Tower’ puttthrough are just some of the obstacles players will have to negotiate at this wildforest-themed attraction.

In addition to repainting and cleaning the museum, a number of important aircraft and display changes have been made.

Visitors this half-term will see a major change to the location of aircraft, cockpits and simulators in the Merston aircraft hall. THe jet aircraft associated with the World Airspeed Record attempts (Meteor, Hunter and Swift) are now displayed, together and the full size Lysander replica, purchased by the museum last year, which has been moved to a corner of the hall to enable an additional exhibition on ‘Tangmere and the SOE’ to be curated by the curatorial team.

THis exhibition includes a film on the recruitment, training and operational activities of SOE agents (spies).

Additionally, displays from last year’s successful ‘Tangmere Aerodrome 100’ exhibition have now been moved into the museum to provide visitors with an insight on the formation and early years of RAF Tangmere.

For younger visitors, the museum has created ten family activities, including the ever popular ‘Tangmere Teddy Bear



Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is located in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum was born when a group of like-minded enthusiasts met to discuss ways of keeping the memory of RAF Tangmere alive.

Challenge’, which family members can pick up from the new ‘Family Activity Station’.

about the history of communications, and have a go on the old telephone switchboards. Our Electricity hall has a working model of a Tesla Coil, where demonstrations can be held by our volunteers when available. With over 40 exhibits to explore, there is so much to see in any weather.

We have the only traditional working print shop in the South of England, you can have a go at printing your own souvenir certificate to take home. Certificates can be personalised with your name, and with the help of our print shop volunteers, if we don’t have your name already they will make it for you. Also, on Wednesday 20th you can have a go at wood turning in the wood turners’ workshop.

Children will be supervised by our skilled volunteers to have a go at turning out small wooden ornaments. Where most activities are included in our admission price, there may be some small fees for some special activities, and donations are always welcome.

We also have our resident potters on site, where you can purchase handmade pottery, where they can also make personalised mugs to order.

Within our Museum we have our own café serving hot and cold snacks, and locally sourced cakes and beverages.

Turkish delights bring warmth and satisfaction

Although it has been opened only for a few weeks, the owners spent months converting the former shop into a smart, bright comfortable venue, which has the unusual feature of an open cooking area where customers can see chefs at work at the

As three of us were dining, we were able to sample a number of dishes with choices guided by the smiling and helpful staff, although the menu also gave good descriptions for people who are unfamiliar with Turkish cuisine.

While trying to decide from the long list of both hot and cold starters, we enjoyed olives with flat bread, which also came in useful to accompany the moreish dips and filling lentil soup. An interesting small touch was a fresh lemon slice to squeeze into the delicious soup.

We swooped on a plate of grilled halloumi slices before trying to decide on main dishes - no easy task with so much choice, which

included vegetarian offerings, fish and salads. Most of the meat dishes are based on lamb or chicken and we took the advice of our waiter and plumped for a lamb shank, lamb shish and chargrilled king prawns.

My lamb shank was a substantial piece of deliciously tender meat, which fell off the bone, while the shish was equally succulent but with slightly more of a kick, an acknowledgement of the restaurant's use of herbs flown in from an organic farm in Turkey. THe prawns disappeared quickly - a sure sign of decent cooking.

THe shank was served as a casserole with carrots and small potatoes, the shish had a

delicate yogurt and lemon sauce while bulgar wheat and salad were served alongside.

Although we were probably too full for dessert, we made an effort to try wonderfully crispy yet soft baklava accompanied with a superb raspberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream.

Turkish wine is available alongside bottles from more usual wine-producing countries and Reina Kitchen is making a feature of its cocktails, including house specials.

THe restaurant offers weekday two-course lunches at £11.45.

Although there is a menu of main courses and pasta dishes, including child-size portions, most people go to enjoy the choice of freshly-made tapas, a number of which have a Middle Eastern slant as well as traditional Spanish dishes.

Key to the happy ambience of the converted wine cellar is the philosophy of owner Beyhan Cumali who treats everyone as guests rather than customers.

Beyhan took over the former Spanish restaurant El Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last

year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Loyal patrons and friends from her Selsey restaurant of the same name, which she has run since 2015, filled the tables for the two launch evenings and since then word has gradually spread about the revival of an old favourite of the Chichester eating-out scene.

15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

I meet lots of people all the time that have started some fad diet plan, or some exercise routine that they haven’t been able to keep up because other commitments just get in the way. THat’s ok!

THe way to view life is that every day is a new start. Every day gives you the chance to do better than yesterday. Do not be disheartened. I think while you sleep and the body is in that rest and repair stage, it’s the perfect time to reset your brain too, and make the day as positive as possible.

THe single most important thing you can do for your health is to cut out processed and junk food. THen in order to maintain energy and

vitality, start adding more goodness into your diet.

If you eat clean, and you are wanting to lose weight, you will start to shed it naturally. Not because you are exercising 100 hours a day or drinking powdered slimming shakes. Often with extreme ‘anything’ the weight just goes back on once you stop. THe key to fitness and health is maintaining a sensible moderate diet full of goodness and exercising at least 30 minutes per day.

NEWS MOUNT NODDY Animal Centre supports the local work of the RSPCA in Chichester and surrounding areas.

We provide care and assistance to hundreds of dogs and cats each year who need a second chance in life to find a forever home. We are currently looking for people who would be interested in fostering for us, so that we can help more animals.

THe cats and dogs that come into our care may have been abandoned or neglected, and in some cases owners are simply not able to care for them any longer. At this point, the RSPCA steps in to provide that care.

Here at the centre we have a wonderful team dedicated to the daily care of all our residents. We ensure every animal is treated as an individual, putting into place training plans, taking care of dietary needs, providing veterinary care, and, of course, providing care and affection. Despite this, arriving at the centre can be a stressful time for our animals. THey are in unfamiliar surroundings, with unfamiliar people and housed in close proximity of other dogs and cats which can be especially stressful for some animals. THis is where volunteering as a foster carer can be an important part of rehabilitating some of our dogs and cats.

We are looking for local people willing to open their homes to a dog or cat looking for a fresh start. When you foster a dog or cat from our centre, not only are you helping the rehabilitation of that animal, you are also freeing up much needed space at our centre for other dogs and cats in need of our help. Fostering an animal is a vital role. It helps animals to adjust to home life and helps improve their chances of finding that special forever home.

As part of our rehoming service, all our animals are carefully assessed and prepared for their new start in life, however sometimes due to the stress experienced at the centre, we do not always get to see all these individual characteristics. Fostering can be a great way of allowing an animal to come out of its shell, and the individual character to shine through. Having this extra information is really useful for the staff, and really helps us to find the perfect new home.

Many of the animals that come into our centre have had a difficult start in life and have not received the care, love and affection that they need to thrive. Living in a foster home provides them with one to one care, helping to build their confidence and provide them with a real home environment, that despite our best efforts, we are not able to replicate at the centre Fostering animals can also be a very rewarding experience.

It’s a special feeling to know that you played a key role in the process when an animal you have fostered is successfully rehomed. Shel Cash is a full time animal care assistant at the Mount Noddy Animal Centre and has fostered both dogs and cats: “I love fostering because you are giving that animal a safe and secure place to recover or gain confidence. I always like to take in those who need a little extra time and care. Watching them grow healthier and more confident each day is really special and when you see them leave for their new start in a forever home it's really the best feeling in the world”.

LIBBY ROWLAND, crop research and developer at Vitacress Herbs, has been awarded a rare place on a new fellowship scheme which promises to develop future leaders of the horticulture industry.

THe scheme, launched by Land Settlement Association Charitable Trust, offers six promising individuals a year, a unique opportunity to gain strategic management training and experience with leading horticultural companies. THe initiative will help to increase the Fellows’ knowledge of current research and their ability to evaluate the potential impact of this on the industry.

THrough innovation and co-operation, the scheme will enable them to gain insight into the role played by trade bodies and associated committees in the development of industry strategies and communications with government.

Libby commented: “I’m delighted to be chosen to join

the first cohort of this fantastic new scheme. THe Fellowship will give me a number of opportunities to learn and to network, which I believe is crucial for the development of an early-career researcher and horticulturist. I hope that my experiences with the scheme over the next two years will help me to make meaningful contributions to the industry, during what promises to be an exciting career in horticulture.”

THe aims of the Fellowship are closely aligned with the values of Chichester-based Vitacress Herbs, which has a proud heritage of market-leading innovation, including the introduction of living herbs.

Simon Conway, managing director of Vitacress Herbs, said: “We aim to employ the brightest and most innovative people in the business and Libby’s place on the new Fellowship is recognition of this. We’d like to congratulate Libby and have no doubt she will seize the opportunity and flourish on this scheme.”

THE Martlet Sword and Morris Men decided on St Wilfrid's Hospice for their chosen charity for the year 2019.

David Asher, the bagman (secretary) and Peter Davey pictured above, had the pleasant task of visiting Alex Burch at the hospice on Friday, January 25, to present them with a cheque for £500.

Peter said: "We look forward to showing the Morris every Wednesday outside local pubs in the towns and villages of West Sussex this summer and being able to help St Wilfrid’s Hospice even more."

THe Martlet Sword and Morris Men are a traditional men-only Morris side, dancing in and around the Chichester area Keeping English traditions and customs alive over the centuries, the Martlet Morris Men perform dances all over the area.

During 2013, the club celebrated its 60th year and to mark the occasion they held a meeting of the Morris Ring which was attended by 200 Morris dancers from all over England.

THe group welcome beginners to join them on Wednesday evenings between October and May, from 8pm, in Southbourne.

You will be able to have a go at some easy but fun dances with sticks and handkerchiefs.

Membership for the first year is free and there is no weekly subscription.

The conservation of the city of Chichester

f Sharp Garland shop, 1911 IN 1968, Chichester was one of four towns chosen to take part of in a study on city conservation, the others being Chester, Bath and York. THe decades after the Second World War, especially the 1960s, were a period of great change in the city. Some saw these changes as a time of greater liberty, while others viewed it as an era of destruction.

THis period of change started in the late 1940s. In 1948, THomas Sharp, a town planner, wrote “Georgian City, A Plan for Chichester” after being asked for suggestions about modernising the city. Sharp’s plan proposed a dual-carriage ring road close to the city walls, cutting across Westgate Fields and requiring the loss of up to 700 homes.

As vehicles became motorised, larger and heavier than the horse-drawn vehicles of earlier times, traffic began to take its toll on local buildings, especially those close to the Market Cross and around Eastgate Square.

Buses negotiated the Market Cross by passing on the shortest route often on the wrong side.

By the 1960s, the buildings here became unsafe and were propped up with ‘raking shaws’ (wooden-built buttresses). THe corner

where East and North Street met was rebuilt, as was the corner of West and South Streets.

In Eastgate Square, parts of the façade to Sharp Garland’s shop, said once to have been England’s oldest grocers, started to crack and became dangerous. In 1964, it was declared unsafe and beyond repair causing local magistrate, Stanley Roth, to sign a dangerous building order. It was compulsorily purchased to make way for a road widening scheme.

Townscapes at this time were starting to change, aided to some extent by developers convincing local councillors into backing ‘slum clearances’.

In Crawley, a developer, John Poulson, created a scandal by clearing slums just to put up tower blocks. With the appearance of these, the Royal Fine Art Commission sent a warning to Chichester City Council, not to allow these high-rise blocks.

In Somerstown, a programme of demolition began in March, 1960. To fully redevelop the area, it was decided that all houses within Somerstown should be demolished regardless of their condition. However, some Somerstown streets were saved thanks

to a campaign by Laurence Olivier, who criticised the city council for the on-going demolitions in the city.

Bill Fraser and Doris Hare were frequent performers at Chichester Festival THeatre and both bought properties on the western side of Somerstown, each for about £100, giving the area value and making the council think again about its demolition plans.

At Westgate, fields of water meadows had, up to 1964, provided grazing for cattle on the eve of market day. Part of THomas Sharp’s ring road plan was used and a road (Avenue d’Chartres) was built connecting to a roundabout at Westgate, Orchard Street and West Street. THis saw the demolition of the end of North Walls as well as many homes and businesses.

At Northgate, Metro House was built along with the fire station, now isolated on a roundabout. Half of Franklin Place survived as another section of the ring road was built and the field, which had housed the annual Sloe Fair since 1107, was Tarmacked and turned into a car park for patrons of Chichester Festival THeatre (now Northgate).

Much of Chichester is now a conservation area with a large number of Grade II listed buildings. Since 1974 local government re-organisation, planning is dealt with

by Chichester District Council with Chichester Conservation Area Advisory Committee established in 1976 to advise the planning authority on matters affecting the conservation area, keeping a watching brief on Chichester heritage.

District Treasurer – Chichester District Scouts

Chichester District Scouts is looking for someone to act as Treasurer for the District Executive Committee (DEC) and manage and monitor the financial activities. Tasks will include: preparing and presenting financial reports and accounts to the Executive Committee; leading the Executive Committee in the creation of budgets and financial planning, and monitoring of these; ensuring that the District is financially able to function, has appropriate reserves and accounting procedures and controls in place; membership and attendance of any finance working groups or sub-committees set by the District Executive Committee where appropriate; and to be a full and active participant in Executive Committee meetings and activities. Promoting Our Boat Trips – Chichester Ship Canal Trust

At Chichester Canal they offer popular boat trips to get people closer to water. The boat trips are accessible to all, welcoming and friendly, and are a great option for groups. They are looking for a volunteer to help spread the word about what they have to offer. Your role is to make contact with organisations by email, letter, leaflet drop or telephone. These organisations may organise day trips such as residential homes, day centres, retirement associations, special interest and social groups and coach tour operators. You’ll maintain a record of who has been approached and follow up to encourage them to book a trip. The role can be done in your own time, and the time commitment is entirely flexible.

Drivers – Contact the Elderly

Contact the Elderly is a national charity whose aim is to relieve the loneliness and isolation felt by elderly people living alone. They meet on the 3rd Sunday of every month in a volunteer host’s home where they chat over tea and cakes. More drivers are needed to collect up to 3 elderly people from their homes and take them to the host’s house for tea at 3pm. They should then be available to return them home at 5pm. Most drivers choose to stay at the host’s home with the guests during the tea but this is not essential. You will need a full driving licence and use of a car, as well as patience & compassion for elderly people.

Record times all round as hundreds PostSport brave the cold at Chichester's 10k HUNDREDS of runners braved freezing temperatures to complete the Chichester 10k last weekend.

Nearly 1,500 people ran the course at Goodwood with the first seven men and four women home beating the magic 30 minute mark.

Will Mycroft was first over the line in 29.32, breaking the course record by 13 seconds, while Hampshire-based Steph Twell, who ran for GB at Rio 2016, broke the women's record by six seconds in 33.17.

THere was success for the local runners, too, as nearly 50 runners from Bognor Tone Zone took part in the event, with nearly 10 personal bests chalked up on the way.

First home for the club was Byron Kearns who took advantage of the quick conditions to finish in 37.20.

Kari Mack was second home for the club in 38:39 and finishing fifth in her category while Danny Mahoney, Jess THomson, Paul Jarvis and Juliet Stallard all finished below the 42 minute mark.

One of the biggest personal bests of the day came from Kirstee Porter who took a massive 12 minutes off her previous best.

It's been a busy week of running with more than 30 runners from Chichester Runners taking part in the Sussex Veteran Cross Country championships.

Taking place at a new venue, Coombes Farm, near Lancing, the Chi contingent finished a commendable fourth club overall on the day.

It was the ladies who took the medals with the over 55 trio of Jane Harrop, Helen Dean and Amanda Godfrey running holders Arena 80 close to win silver team honours.

Harrop was the first one home, winning her over 55 category by nearly two minutes THe men’s combined over 50 and over 60 joint race saw no less than 17 Chichester runners line up in a good field of nearly 90.

It was the over 60s who came closest to a medal led home by Richard Miles (4th). For the over 50s it was Jason Boswell who showed fine form to finish in 23rd place.

THe one disappointment team-wise was in the over 40s men when talisman James Baker pulled out with a back strain. It was left to John Peters to have his best run for the club in fifth place.

THat completed one of the club’s most successful Masters events in history.

CHICHESTER RFC's mini-march up the table will be put to the ultimate test when they welcome leaders Brighton to Oaklands Park tomorrow (2.30pm).

THe Blues are on the up after two good bonus points away wins on the bounce, first at Havant and they last time out at Dartfordians a fortnight ago.

THat ten point haul has lifted Chi up to tenth in the 14 team London South One, five points clear of the bottom three.

But Blues will need to continue to perform at those high levels tomorrow when their Sussex rivals make the trip along the A27.

With Brighton losing two of their last four Chi do have a sniff of causing an upset. But they will know full well that the visitors will want to repeat their 44-21 win over Blues back in October to ensure they stay in pole position in the division.

Elsewhere, Bognor will put a three match winning run on the line when they head to New Milton and District tomorrow (TBC).

THe Purple and Greens are third in the Hampshire Premier, five points behind Sandown & Shanklin in second.

To keep the pressure on the sides above them, Bognor will want to claim maximum points in the New Forest.

With the firsts in good form, the feelgood factor is rubbing off on other sides at Hampshire Avenue.

Last weekend Bognor 3s claimed a piece of silverware when they defeated Littlehampton in the West Sussex RFU Vase Final.

In a match which was switched to Chichester College, Bognor gained the initiative from the off and took the lead through Karl Finn.

Littlehampton replied with a penalty before Finn added a second. 10-3 at the break.

THe second period saw both sides get on the front foot but no scoring until Harry Oliver wrapped up the win for the thirds.

THe Sussex Vase Final is scheduled to take place on March 30 with Crowborough 3s or Uckfield 2s the opponents.

RUGBY: Chichester's Jess Breach is confident of firing England's Red Roses to Six Nations success after starring in the opening 51-7 win over Ireland.

THe 21-year-old winger, who played her youth rugby at Chichester and still lives locally, made only her third start for her country at the match in Donnyhill.

It did not take long for Breach to make her mark, handing off two players before sprinting down the right wing to cross for a try with just a few minutes on the clock.

THat started a run of eight tries for the Red Roses in what was a comfortable win.

Writing on social media after the match, Breach wrote: Fantastic win against Ireland! Great team performance, topped off by getting over the try line."

Next up is France on Sunday (12.45pm) at Doncaster.

--Bognor RFC's Bradley Smith, Lewis Decarteret, Alfie Spurle and George Orchard are all set for county honours after making the Sussex under 17s squad.

Smith confident Chi are back on track ahead of tough week

City open up five point gap CHICHESTER City's grip at the top of the SCFL Premier is tightening by the week - and manager Miles Rutherford will be keen to make sure his side do not slip up.

THe Oaklands Park side now have a five point lead over second-place Newhaven after the challengers slipped up at home to Eastbourne Town.

Chi, meanwhile, dispatched East Preston 3-2 last weekend to make it 12 matches unbeaten in the league.

City can extend that run tomorrow when they make the trip to mid-table Peacehaven & Telscombe (3pm).

But after taking 19 points from a total of 21 in the past six weeks they will certainly head to the Sports Park expecting to come away with a positive result.

Chi will hope to repeat a dominant first half performance against EP where the result should have been more convincing on paper.

THe deadlock was broken after 25 minutes when Scott Jones was brought down in the box by Jack Barnes.

Josh Clack stepped up and made no mistake from the penalty spot, tucking it away to the keeper’s left for his sixth

goal in eight games.

Daniel Huet tried to reply instantly for EP but his shot flew over the bar.

Chi attacked again and Clack, who was busy all game, put in a delicious ball which Jones met at the back post, only to see his header rebound off the crossbar.

City doubled their lead in the 34th minute after a scintillating counter attack.

Kaleem Haitham squared the ball to Gicu Iordache, and the Romanian unselfishly set up Clack who slotted it away.

THe hosts started the second half as they had finished the first, and would have had a third goal if it wasn’t for Scott Slaughter, who denied Clack his hat-trick.

Shortly after Chi got their just desserts and went 3-0 up when a super free kick from Dave Herbert gave the visiting keeper, George Bentley, no chance.

Further chances to add to the lead were spurned by the home side.

Huet grabbed what looked like a consolation tapping in from close range before Asa Nicholson made it 3-2 on 88 minutes to set up an anxious finish.

IT'S a make or break week for Chichester City Ladies as the league leaders embark on two away games in three days which could define their season.

After a poor start to the year, Aaron Smith's side have regrouped and sent MK Dons packing 5-2 in their last outing a fortnight ago.

City, who are still top in the FA National Southern Premier, had their match against title rivals Coventry United postponed at the weekend. But they have no time to rest with a trip to Oxford United on Sunday (2pm) followed by a visit to local rivals Portsmouth on Tuesday (7.45pm).

With a further trip to Cardiff at the end of the month, the club know they must be up for the challenge.

Smith said: "It will be a tough month but we want that. We have started scoring some goals and playing the way we want to play.

"THere are some pressures when near the top of the league and I think that got to us a bit but we are back on track. It's pleasing we have now come round the corner."

City had further cause for celebration this week when Loulou Robson made her debut for the England Colleges side.

Points the aim for Lions chief

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea has set his sights on a strong finish to the season after the club's hopes of silverware ended for another year.

A youthful Lions side came out second best against AFC Uckfield in the quarter final of the RUR Cup in midweek.

Even the return of leading scorer Dan Simmonds from injury was not enough for Pagham as goals either side of the break sealed the 2-1 win for the in-form visitors.

All focus is now on the league with the Lions having the perfect chance to show the rest of

the SCFL Premier what they are about when they welcome second-place Newhaven to Nyetimber Lane.

THe message from Shea to joint managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen is simple: pick up as many points as possible and improve from the current position of tenth.

He added: "THe aim is to pick up as many points as we can in the run in.

"I know the guys are using a few younger players and giving them a chance so it's a good opportunity to look at them as the pressure is off us with not being in the hunt."

Pagham were left disappointed from the midweek RUR cup defeat which was played in testing conditions under the lights at Nyetimber.

Shea said: "We wanted to go as far as we can in that competition. We knew we would have a hard game against Uckfield and we know it will be another tough one at Peacehaven [in the semi final]."

Pagham's ranks have been boosted in recent days with the additions of former players Liam Brady (Arundel), Jordan Matthews (Chichester City), George Bingham (Wick) and Peter Beadle.

THe quartet were denied making the reappearance in the white and black after last weekend's match against Arundel was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Shea said: "If truth be known, we are slightly disappointed from not carrying on where we left off last year.

"We had a great finish last year finishing third and went into the season very positive.

We are a very hard team to beat and have to finish teams off if we are to pick up points. ""I think we have drawn 13 games in the league this season - that's too many if you want to get promoted. We've been beaten only four times but have got to finish teams off.

"I do feel there are very fine margins in the leagues and think ten teams are in same boat as us - if you win a match you go up a few spots so we have lots to focus on."

Blues have top four spot in their sights SELSEY'S unbeaten run rolls on - and the Blues will look to stretch the streak to eight game when they welcome Bexhill United to the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side last tasted defeat at the start of December when they lost to leaders Alfold 2-1.

Since then, Selsey have found their stride, picking up 17 points from a possible 21 on a run which has placed them fourth in SCFL Division One. THe latest in this unbeaten streak came on Saturday when second half goals from Joseph Bennett and Callum Dowdell sealed a 2-0 away win at Seaford Town.

Next up is the visit from second-place Bexhill, who are the league's top scorers having netter

14 goals in their last three matches.

Elsewhere in Division One, Sidlesham head to Hailsham Town tomorrow (3pm) sitting tenth in the division.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is warning his side must tighten up at the back to have any chance of staying in the promotion hunt.

Rocks slipped out of the playoff places this week thanks to 3-2 defeat at home to Tonbridge Angels on Saturday.

But, in true topsy-turvy style, unpredictable Bognor followed that with a 2-1 win at highflying Merstham in midweek, a result which leaves Rocks fourth in the Bostik Premier.

With just six points separating Merstham in third and Kingstonian in 13th, the Nyewood Lane side will have their work cut out to get into the top five by the end of the season.

Pearce claims his side must improve at the back - or hopes of a return to National South at the first time of asking will be dashed sooner rather than later.

THe veteran boss said: "You cannot concede the number of goals that we've been doing.

THat's more than 40 we have conceded now "THe hardest thing in football is scoring goals and if we are letting them in that makes the job even harder.

"It's been going on now for five months.

THere's many reasons for it but at some stage you have to accept the players you have are not good enough at this time "It's not been helped with the number of centre halves we have had as we're not getting the uniformity as we're chopping and changing. Because of that, it becomes a very

difficult job."

Goals from on loan Portsmouth duo Brad Lethbridge and Dan Smith sealed the win on a wet Wednesday at third-place Merstham.

Rocks could have made it an excellent week when they took a 2-1 lead against Tonbridge through Jimmy Muitt and an excellent Lethbridge effort.

But Angels hit back to square things at the break. THe match was decided in the second half when a soft penalty was awarded after a foul by Joe Tomlinson.

Pearce said: "If that's how you judge a penalty then I would argue every corner would result in a penalty or free kick. It's a major decision which did not go for us and that's disappointing.

"We did not play well. We got two very good goals early but we have had a problem where we've had four home games where we've done OK but the defending is crippling us."

Rocks' cause could be boosted at tomorrow's match with struggling Hornchurch as injured centre halves Keaton Wood and Corey Heath are nearing a return.

Even if they are not available Pearce did not rule out making extra additions to the squad He said: "I worry that we may have played a few too many games before they come back.

"We do need to increase the squad but we do have a considerable amount of money going on players who are injured."

Attack key to Rocks ambitions IT'S normally defence which wins championships; but it looks as though if Bognor are to launch a playoff push then it will be the offence which plays the key role.

With injuries hitting the Rocks hard, Jack Pearce's side have gone on the attack netting 16 times in the last six games nearly three a match.

Jimmy Muitt's form has been crucial to that. But Bognor's hopes in front of goal have been boosted further with the news that Brad Lethbridge and Dan Smith will remain on loan at the Nye Camp until the end of the year.

It had been unclear if Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett was prepared to allow the duo to extend their spells with the Rocks.

But the Fratton Park manager has sanctioned the deal, on the provision they can be recalled by the League One side if needed.

Pearce said: "As ever, we thank Portsmouth for allowing them to extend the loan period.

"We're ever so pleased with the progress both players have made while they have been with us.

"When you consider that both have been in Kenny's thoughts to one degree or another recently it serves as testimony to the mutual benefits of the situation."

WELL it was not the greatest start to the week, with that loss against our old rivals Tonbridge.

From my point of view though, it was frustrating given we went 2-1 up. To throw it away late on was a bit disappointing, especially at home.

A lot of people are talking about our home form. We have lost more at home than away and I think that's because we tend to play with a counter attacking style. At home, teams will sit back and then hit us on the break, which is causing us some issues.

THe other big problem is injuries. I know Calvin and Keaton are due to be back soon but the absences of THeo Widdrington and Gary Charman in the last month has really hit us Fans are hoping we will get into the playoffs - that's what the message was at the start of the season from the club's management but it's never easy at non-league level as you're not sure know what you will be up against.

When we are playing tough big physical sides like Tonbridge and Potters Bar, it's tough to break them down.

Of those who are fit and playing, Richard Gilot has come in and done well. He got the man of the match award against Angels and I've been pleased to see how well he has done settling back in.

THen there's Jimmy Muitt who is really in form as without his goals we would not be as high as we are.

Chad Field has played pretty much all the minutes in the whole season. For players like him it must be hard as he's had so many different partners. It must be difficult to gel and get the understanding when this is constantly changing .

Harvey Read is starting to get in there and performing quite well.

But in spite of all of this, it all comes down to the fact that when the other team scores

it's usually down to our own mistakes as we always have the lion's share of possession.

I have always admired Tonbridge as they usually have a good attacking line which causes us problems.

I remember back at their place we struggled right up to the end until Mason scored to get the winner.

Unfortunately, we came out on the other end of the result this time.

Injuries do play a part but I worry whether we are going to make it because of how inconsistent we are.

Robbie and Jack are probably just as worried. THey both think we're a few players short and injuries have not helped As for Jack, it's good to see him back. He spends a lot of time back with us in the press box (which is where he is if you can hear him but not see him!)

A lot of people do not agree with his style but you cannot fault his love for the club,#.

He has invested a lot in the club and I think in Robbie he has someone he can trust with running the team.

If there's a positive it is that we are scoring goals. THat was the problem last year but we have been boosted by Brad and Dan who have been excellent. I wonder if we had them last year whether we would have stayed up It's good to have them back for the rest of the year.

Now we do, I think we should be looking for three points against Hornchurch tomorrow.

We got the draw earlier in the season, which was good considering we do not normally do well there.

But they are struggling at the moment and should be a team to beat.

We need to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later. We have to try and get back into the playoff positions and the only way we'll do that is by being more consistent.
