Doubt over carfree day in walls

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS TO hold a car-free Sunday event within the walls of the city were proposed to West Sussex councillors last week.

Parklands resident Mark Record has already talked about the idea to Chichester City Council in December, which was well received by councillors.

At that meeting, the mayor of the city, Cllr Martyn Bell, said: "I am on the same page as Mark, not totally but pretty much. I think there are some elements of the Chichester Vision in this in terms of perhaps having a day where we wouldn’t see the traffic.

"I’m very flattered you have brought this question to us, but, at the end of the day, we are a parish council and not the authority for highways."

However, it appears such an event may be unlikely to take place after county councillors had reservations over the idea.

Cllr Carol Purnell said her concern was that it would impact badly on disabled people.

Cllr Jeremy Hunt had some reservations but said: "Business would probably benefit because if you made a big play on it, and you were able to close the whole city centre, people would come as they would enjoy walking around a car-free city centre. It would be a bit of a novelty."

Council leader Louise Goldsmith said for now it was best to refer the idea to a specialist.

She said: "Having seen it in Paris and how it works, there are things to think about around here.

"We are all worried about air quality, and public health and Deborah Urqhart, cabinet member for the environment, is very interested in looking at other green

ideas and environmental issues. I would suggest we refer it to her."

Mr Record said after the meeting: "I felt disappointed that our county councillors were unenthusiastic about staging a small scale event in the city on Sunday, September 22, on International Car Free Day 2019.

"My motivation for proposing a carfree event in Chichester city centre is concern about the destruction of our global environment."

City residents gain opportunity to step into the film at museum HOLLYWOOD is coming to the city this spring with an exciting new exhibition at The Novium Museum.

The show, Hollywood Rome: Reel Life in the Ancient World, will feature stunning costumes, props and posters from some big name modern epics such as Gladiator, Centurion, King Arthur and Ben Hur. It will interpret the films in the context of the history and archaeology that have inspired film-makers, presenting historical figures in a way that will connect with modern audiences and fans of historical cinema.

It will include interactive and handling elements, original cinema posters and banners and fabric

hangings used in Gladiator. There will also be a selection of memorabilia from classic ‘sword and sandal’ flicks of the 1950s and 1960s.

Stephanie Thorndyke, manager of the museum, said: "We are always looking at innovative ways to bring history to life. By tapping into people’s love of cinema, and looking at some of the big stories and legends that have made their way onto the screen, we can link with our own rich Roman heritage."

Hollywood Rome: Reel Life in the Ancient World opens on Saturday, April 6, until Sunday, September 8.

Admission is free, with donations gratefully received.

Emma helps bank as city's first refill shop

Emma Smith, branch manager of the Co-operative Bank in North Street, has helped the business join the Refill Scheme, the first time the Co-op has been involved with the project.

Chichester officially launched its Refill Scheme programme on Wednesday, January 23, at the Assembly Rooms.

The initiative aims to encourage participating cafes, bars, restaurants,

banks, galleries, museums and other businesses to sign up to the free Refill app and put a sticker in their window alerting passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to fill up their water bottle for free.

Anyone can now go into the Co-op Bank in North Street and refill their water bottle, free of charge.

Emma said: "The Co-operative Bank is all about values and ethics and as an organisation we are continually trying to be community involved and socially aware.

"The average adult buys more than three plastic water bottles every week, which equates to around 175 bottles every year per person.

"This is the perfect fit for us and we are keen to get out to help the community.

We have two days of volunteering each year to help the community and as part of that I am hoping to go out with the Litter Ladies."

In total, some 7.7 billion plastic bottles are bought across the UK each year, resulting in substantial amounts of single-use plastic waste ending up in our oceans.

He said: "We are obviously disappointed at the closure of House of Fraser and HMV but change involving store openings and closings has always been a feature of the retail high street.

"Let’s not forget, 30 new independent businesses have opened in Chichester in the past year alone.

"The district council’s priority is to help replace House of Fraser with alternative retail shops and a mix of other uses which can include new housing. Our planning rules in this West Street location are not restrictive and allow the site owners to provide a wide mix of uses.

"We have to accept change. The traditional high street selling mainly goods is in steady decline with the growth of the internet and the continued growth of out of town shopping. But the demand for personal services is growing: yoga, nail bars, hairdressers, art galleries, phone shops as well as restaurants, coffee houses and bars.

"Chichester is particularly well placed to meet the changes in the high street. It is a wonderful city with a rich offering of the arts and heritage: including the Pallant House Gallery, the Novium Museum, the cathedral and the Chichester Festival Theatre."

The Chichester BID team has said it will continue to work with its BID members to organise activities to strengthen the city’s appeal and increase time spent in the high street with its programme of festivities and the successful launch of its Chichester Gift Card.

The city's MP, Gillian Keegan, also had faith in the future of Chichester’s city centre. She said: "The high street is rapidly changing across

the country and we are losing some of our big household names, but, I believe Chichester will continue to buck the trend.

"This is not by accident. Chichester BID works incredibly hard to support businesses throughout the city in partnership with our district council which runs a range of programmes offering grants, business advice and training through their economic development team.

"Last year, for example, they supported 38 independent businesses.

Their work is complimented by groups like Visit Chichester who keep people coming to our beautiful and historic city.

The culmination of their efforts has meant not only are we resilient but 47 per cent of the City’s businesses are independent."

West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “We know Chichester is one of the most resilient cities in the country. However, we cannot stand by and be complacent.

“It’s really sad to see HMV and House of Fraser close. We now need to look at how we can ensure the town centre is as vibrant as possible and people still come to enjoy all that Chichester has to offer.

"Of course, we will work with everyone because we all love and cherish this wonderful city.”

Liberal Democrat district councillor Adrian Moss said: "Chichester City is under significant pressure from out of town and online shopping.

"The BID is doing a good job in working with the local shop owners to encourage shoppers to the city. However, it is becoming harder all the time.

"Chichester can and will thrive with real vision and a commitment become a real destination."

` Community pub THE CROWN Community Pub Hub campaign group is doing all it can to make sure that Muchos Nachos at the Crown remains a vibrant pub at the heart of the Whyke community.

The group is pleased to announce that one of their new projects involves bringing artists into the pub to display their works.

Campaigners are looking into the feasibility of using some of the walls in the pub's side room to exhibit work from local artists and the group is keen to hear from them.

They are also in the early stages of exploring some co-working with the University of Chichester on an exciting project it is hoped to bring to fruition later this year.

City councillor Sarah Sharp, who is helping to co-ordinate the group, said: "This is a very exciting time for us. We know that other community pubs work with their universities as we have seen the model in Brighton with 'Brains at the Bevy'.

"We have a great space for talks and various performance spaces and are keen to use the pub as much as possible."

Police hunt down credit card misuse

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk POLICE ARE keen to hear from shops or pubs along or near the A27 which may have been defrauded by the use of invalid Vanilla Mastercards in early February.

Officers know of four incidents so far.

On Friday, February 1, two men used an invalid card for a meal worth over £100 at a pub in Chichester.

Then on Wednesday, February 6, similar cards were used at four shops in East Sussex - at Pontin's and NISA in Camber, Salts Farm shop in Rye, where meat, tobacco and scratch cards were taken, and unsuccessfully at a Tesco shop in Little Common, Bexhill, and again unsuccessfully at Costcutter, in Fishmarket Road, Rye. At that shop, staff raised the alarm and officers stopped a car with two

men nearby. A large quantity of fresh meat, along with tobacco, lottery scratch cards and some prepaid Vanilla cards were seized.

The men, aged 41 and 22, both from Portsmouth, were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation and after being interviewed were released under investigation until May 7.

Police have also been made aware of a number of similar offences in the Hastings area, notified by the town's Shopwatch, which is part of the local Business Crime Reduction Partnership.

Officers are working with them to identify offenders and raise awareness among local retailers.

Detective Constable Shelley Campbell, of Hastings Investigations, said: "If any shop or pub staff or managers recall such attempts that they have not yet reported to us, we ask them to contact us online or by calling 101, quoting serial 315 of 06/02."

Councillors left in the dark over plans to build a tunnel

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PLANNING permission to build a tunnel was deferred at a meeting after committee members were left feeling unsure of the consequences.

At Chichester District Council's planning meeting on Wednesday morning, councillors heard that a resident in West Wittering had proposed plans to build the tunnel under a footpath just over a year after he built a bridge across the path which has been removed after it did not have planning consent.

The steps from Mr George Chapman's garden at Dolphins in Rockwood Lane, West Wittering, would run down through his garden to a 1.5 metre long tunnel beneath a public footpath, rising through to another step of steps to a foreshore garden.

It was questioned during the meeting if the foreshore garden actually belonged to Mr Chapman and members were told: "Our view is, on the balance of probabilities, it is garden land and has been for at least ten years. It’s part of the foreshore but is privately managed."

Officers at the council had recommended the committee permit the tunnel despite strong objections raised neighbouring residents, Chichester Harbour Conservancy and the parish council.

The applicant said he had fears over safety for his wife and grandchildren when they crossed the footpath because of the heavy use by cyclists but it was argued that the tunnel to get to a patch of foreshore garden was not necessary due to the short crossing of the footpath.

He said: "I'm somewhat surprised to find this application before you. I dearly wish to be able to safely cross the footpath in my garden with my grandchildren and this footpath has now regularly become a cycleway."

Nearby resident and objector Simon Hill-Norton said: "Our time today, the time of the volunteers for the parish council, the time of the many experts involved in this application is because the Chapmans would rather build a tunnel, in this beautiful wild place, than take three steps across a public footpath."

This was echoed by Cllr Carol Purnell who said: “Personally, I would not consider, if that was mine, paying out that sort of money rather than walk three steps, but that is not a planning issue."

However, officers reminded councillors that it did not matter what the reasons were for the tunnel.

Cllr Tricia Tull said the tunnel was 'over-engineered' and could set a precedent over further applications although she was told by officers these were not acceptable reasons for refusal.

She said: "I'm very concerned about the domestication of the foreshore.

"This seems to be a very overengineered action to take to provide this kind of access to what would seem to be a somewhat disputed use of the foreshore.

"I think in cases like this we have to make a value judgment and my judgment is to refuse this application."

Cllr Simon Oakley said he required clarification over whether the tunnel

came out on the foreshore in the site of a Special Protection Area as the maps shown were not entirely clear.

Members rejected a recommendation to give approval and agreed that the application should be deferred until more information could be provided about the status of the land and how the tunnel would affect the area.

During this week, three bins in the city centre were set alight. One was in St Andrew's Court, East Street, and two in North Street. Serials 1034 4/2, 0101 5/2 and 0451 9/2.

In Broom Hills, Tangmere, on Monday, February 4, a vehicle was broken into. A small number of items were stolen from the vehicle.

Also in Tangmere, in Osborn Drive, on Monday, February 4, a vehicle was broken into but nothing of value stolen. Serial 0652 5/2.

In Woodfield Park Road, Emsworth, on Monday, February 4, a vehicle was broken into and a bag and purse stolen. Serial 0131 4/2.

Overnight into Thursday, February 7, a building site in East Bracklesham Drive, Bracklesham Bay, was broken into and a high value dumper truck stolen.

In Slade Lane, Rogate, on Thursday, February 7, police received a report of an outbuilding being broken into and two blue Yamaha off road motorcycles and a bike being stolen. Serial 0243 7/2.

Police received a report of two sheds being broken into in Main Road, Birdham, on Sunday, February 10. Serial 0338 10/2.

On Sunday, February 10, police received a report of a garage breakin at Newells Lane, West Ashling, where a high-value bike was stolen.

Challenging bike ride for city family to raise funds for Chichester charity A FAMILY from Chichester are taking part in a cycle ride to help raise money PACSO. On April 19, Loella, Derrick and Russell Harris, along with Loella's brother, Karl Lowe, will be taking part in a 26.2 mile cycle ride from Brighton City airport (Shoreham airport) to Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester .

PACSO (Parents and Carers Support Organisation) is a local charity which provides help and encouragement to families in the Chichester and Arun districts who have a child with special educational needs and/ or disabilities.

Loella not only has Asperger's syndrome, but she also has brittle asthma and Derrick suffers from a rare form of muscular dystrophy which

means he can not process lactic acid out of his muscles without professional support.

This challenge will be very difficult for him as he can't ride a bike and instead he will be using a specially adapted trike, adapted by The Rider's Guild in Chichester.

Loella said: "PACSO have been a huge source of support for many families, including us.

"They are only volunteers and we want to do this to say thank you for all their support. The money raised will help the charity fund a new office and play room for their support sessions in Chichester."

In her speech in the House of Commons, the Chichester MP praised Finn’s actions and said the story gave her “faith and hope that there are dogs like this on our streets to protect us.”

Mrs Keegan went on to praise the efforts of local police dogs in Chichester which were instrumental in a wide range of police activity.

She shared the story of Isla, who helped her handler arrest three car robbery suspects in the Chichester area.

She went on to name all the police dogs that had made recent arrests in Chichester over recent months.

Mrs Bourne said: "Sussex Police have also reported that dogs have helped find distressed and potentially suicidal people who have gone missing.

"These extraordinary animals and others used by police forces around the country deserve the best possible legal protection so that offenders think twice before trying to harm them."

CHICHESTER MP Gillian Keegan spoke on Friday in support of the Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Bill, which seeks to increase protection for serving animals in the police force.

The Bill, which is commonly known as Finn's Law, was brought forward

by Sir Oliver Heald and has been supported by the Government, Sussex Police and the Crime Commissioner, Katie Bourne.

The Bill came about after Police Dog Finn was stabbed with a ten-inch blade to the chest and head during an arrest on October 5, 2016, when he and his handler, PC David Wardell, tried to arrest a robbery suspect.

PC Wardell, who walked away from the incident with a stab wound to the hand, said: "Finn stopped the knife from reaching me and saved my life.

"Even after being stabbed through the lung, Finn did not let go of the suspect until other police units arrived and arrested him."

STUDENTS from Bishop Luffa Sixth form have reached the national finals of the Bar Mock Trials.

The 15 pupils from the city's school's sixth form achieved their success after an exciting win in Guildford at the regional heats.

The Bar Mock Trial is a national competition organised by the Bar Council and the charity, Young Citizens, aiming to give young people an insight into the workings of the British legal system, as well as giving students opportunities to gain valuable experiences and a deeper understanding of the individual roles in court.

The trial involves more than 2,000 students, 200 barristers/advocates and around 90 judges from all over England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The students involved in the Bishop Luffa Bar Mock team said they were extremely excited to compete in the national finals, which will take place in Edinburgh in late March.

` Solicitors help the homeless STAFF at Owen Kenny solicitors are making donations needed at Stonepillow.

The team of 33 are collecting together items after seeing Stonepillow’s website and Facebook posts asking for help with 'everyday basic items that we all take for granted'.

Items include: notebooks and pens/pencils, books and puzzle books, torches, travel mugs/flasks, hair gel, dry shampoo, moisturiser and hand cream, deodorant, shampoo, shower gel, baby wipes, sweets/chocolate, snacks and drinks, underwear, socks, leggings, thermals, sanitary towels etc, medical supplies, bin bags and hats, gloves, scarves etc.

Conveyancer and solicitor at Owen Kenny, Katherine Denny, was shocked at the homeless figures on Stonepillow’s website.

She said: "In December, 2018, Shelter announced that the number of homeless people that have died in last five years have increased by 24 per cent.

"Homelessness continues to increase. In the south east, the number of people sleeping rough has increased by 261 per cent since 2010."

Staff agreed they all wanted to do something to help and that time was of the essence, so there are now collection points at both offices in Chichester at 38 South Street and Old Market House, Market Avenue, to collect the donations for Stonepillow.

Albert Finney death

Mr Finney, who died on Thursday, February 7, was a supporter of the charity in Southbourne, together with his wife, Pene.

Tuppenny Barn's purpose is to advance education in horticulture and sustainability in West Sussex.

Albert Finney, who worked in film, television and theatre, is known for his roles in Scrooge, Annie, Erin Borckovich and the James Bond film, Skyfall.

The charity cultivates and harvests organic produce, to create learning experiences for all ages that promotes the benefits of growing, cooking and eating organic produce.

It also provides facilities, information and advice of the benefits to physical and mental health through engagement in organic horticulture.

Charity chief executive Maggie Haynes said: "We were delighted to welcome both Albert and his close friend, Tom Courtney, on our very first event that was held in the centre back in 2013.

"The walls were just temporary bales of straw at that time and it was still a bit of a building site!

"Despite the rather 'Heath Robinson' surrounds and the pouring rain outside, they came along and participated in the picnic lunch event, put on by our friends at Fat Olives and music accompaniment by the Chidham ukelele band.

"I had the lovely late Lizzie Dymock, our trustee and champion Tuppenny networker, to thank for this most welcome visit.

"His final act of generosity was to pay for the solar tunnel that is dedicated to the Social Horticulture Therapy Project and used by our clients every Friday, as well as growing heritage-type produce there all year round.

"We at Tuppenny Barn will be forever grateful to Albert and Pene for their generosity."

No foul play as shed gets council approval PLANNING permission has been granted to build a 14m long chicken shed in Sidlesham.

At a meeting on Wednesday morning, district council committee members debated the application in Fletchers Lane for construction of a timber building to house the applicant's chickens.

Sidlesham Parish Council had discussed the planning application at its planning committee meeting in April last year and rejected it due to the shed being too close to the road. However, no councillors were present at the district council meeting to make representation.

The building in an existing agricultural area, would measure as 14.1m long by 3.4m wide would be constructed with

timber shiplap cladding.

Cllr Les Hixson said: "I'm pretty sure there is nothing I can see that is against this. It seems a very good development, good for the wildlife and the chickens and I am all for it."

Cllr Tricia Tull agreed. She said: "I was not at the parish meeting when this was discussed.

"I appreciate their comments, it might be more appropriate sited at the rear of the plot but as our officers have recommended that it is put alongside as a linear development with the properties then I can't argue that point."

It was noted that a condition was in place to prevent further development to convert the building to residential.

The sky is not the limit as visitors go out of this world for sky festival

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PEOPLE across Chichester and Bognor Regis are reaching for the stars with the return of the South Downs Dark Skies Festival.

The 50th anniversary of the first moon landings will be celebrated as the festival returns with two weeks of cosmic fun for all the family.

With 2019 marking half a century since the Apollo 11 landing, this year’s actionpacked festival will have a lunar theme, with moongazing sessions, indoor planetarium shows, an incredible VR experience exploring the Milky Way and the ever-popular star parties.

The festival, now in its third year, celebrates the National Park’s International Dark Sky Reserve status, which was awarded in 2016 and recognises it as one of the best places in the world to view the moon and stars.

The festival runs from Friday, February 15, to Sunday, March 3, with events across the length and breadth of the national park. The festival’s free flagship event, Stargazing South Downs, will return to Midhurst on February 16 and, for first time, also go to Petersfield on

February 18 during the school half-term.

Activities will include a giant ‘dark night skies’ colouring wall, the chance to dress up as an astronaut against the backdrop of the moon, talks on nocturnal wildlife and interactive science demonstrations.

Dan Oakley, “Dark Skies” lead ranger at the national park, said: “With the full moon falling during the festival, we’re looking forward to telling the story of our nearest neighbour and the influence it has on plants, animals and us.

“The star-studded skies above our heads are as valuable as our beautiful rolling landscapes and we can’t wait to share them with even more people. The immense view of the starry sky over the national park really is a spectacular sight and it’s amazing when people see it in all its glory for the first time.

“We’re hoping to capture some aweinspiring views of the moon and its cratered surface.”

People will be invited to share their images of the stars and moon using the hashtags #EmbraceTheDarkness and #SouthDowns over the two weeks.

Some focus on what can be seen in the winter night sky while other topics include a tour of the planets and one titled 'Distant Worlds - Alien Life'.

Each involves the chance to experience the awesome cosmos in comfort, with live expert commentary by a professional astronomer. The full dome shows feature stunning immersive video and breathtaking images.

The Planetarium is a large room with a domed ceiling, accommodating 96 people at a time. A special star projector projects images on the dome and shows the stars and other objects in the night sky.

The night sky can be shown both forwards and backwards in time and questions are welcome after the 70-minute shows.

Laura Warren, events and engagement officer from the South Downs National Park, said: "There is something for everyone at this year’s festival, whether you’re new to stargazing or a seasoned pro.

"The festival also ties in nicely with the half-term holidays so it’s a great opportunity for young people to learn more about astronomy. No matter what the weather is outside, you can still come and learn about the amazing dark skies in our national park."

Pubs and shops will be raffling off large chocolate eggs for £1 per ticket, with the hope of raising over £1,000.

Around £300 was donated by spectators at a race meeting at Fontwell Park in December, which will be donated to Headway, West Sussex, a charity addressing acquired brain injury.

Lions president Joan Tidy said: “This was an apt choice as many jockeys suffer from the injury as a result from falls in races and we would like to thank Fontwell Park for their support for local charities .”

A special tandem designed to offer cycling to the visually impaired has been purchased from America and will soon be presented to a young lad who wants to ride with his family.

Loss of taxi rank

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE DECISION by National Rail’s contracted parking providers, Saba UK, to remove the taxi rank from the southern side of Chichester railway station has been described by Chichester Labour Party as 'another example of large organisations trampling on the livelihoods of small and medium-sized local businesses'.

Taxi driver Jim Rendall told Chichester Labour Party: "This move will mean that disabled people and families with kids or grandparents will be struggling on their return to Chichester.

"If they arrive on the London/ Gatwick platform, they will have to walk the whole way round the station just to get a taxi, usually carrying heavy luggage.

"Taxi drivers are just forgotten. No one cares. If this was my only job, I wouldn't be able to make a living."

Drivers said they received little notice regarding the intention to create more parking spaces by removing the taxi rank, and the move would reduce the number of available licences available to taxi drivers at the station.

As the only other taxi rank in the city is in West Street, outside the Duke and Rye, the opportunities for drivers to ply their trade in Chichester will be further reduced.

One of Labour’s Chichester East ward local election candidates, Kevin Hughes, said: "Although this is not council property, the response from council representatives to the drivers’ requests for more information has been disappointingly unsympathetic "In addition, this once again illustrates how the privatisation of our public services has failed. Constant parcelling up of services to providers that are more and more remote from the ability of anyone to hold them to account threatens local people's livelihoods."

Frustration over lengthy call times THE Sussex Police Crime Commissioner said she was ‘increasingly frustrated’ by how long it takes for some 101 nonemergency calls to be answered.

Katy Bourne was speaking at a meeting in Worthing Town Hall, where she took questions from councillors on a variety of policing matters.

Joss Loader (Ind, Marine) told Mrs Bourne that residents had reported waiting between 45 minutes and an hour for their call to be answered – with many giving up completely.

Ms Loader also asked how reported crime figures could be seen to be accurate if people were unable to even get through.

Mrs Bourne told members that there had been an increase in the number of people reporting their issues online, but added that money from the coming council tax increase would be used to address the problems with the 101 service.

Describing contact with the public as ‘absolutely fundamental’, she added: “For a lot of people, the first time they ever come into contact with a police officer is over the phone so that 101 nonemergency number is absolutely key.

“I have been increasingly frustrated, as have many members of the public, with the call handling times.”

It was an issue she raised with deputy chief constable Jo Shiner at a meeting before Christmas.

A report to the meeting said that, in October, more than half of 101 calls had been abandoned and calls that did get through were taking longer to deal with.

The average completion times for October and November were 20 minutes 23 seconds and 12 minutes 25 seconds respectively.

DCC Shiner also reported that some mobile phone companies had a cutoff point where they ended calls after a certain number of rings.

In an interview with a local paper last summer, Chief Superintendent Jane Derrick said the call centre dealt with 70,000 calls each month, including 999 and 101 calls as well as monitoring CCTV cameras.

DCC Shiner reported that 430 people were needed to run the control centre properly and 424 were currently employed, with some of them still in training.

The level of staff turnover was reported to be high, often because the staff moved on to other roles within the force.

She said: “There is no doubt that we do need an increase of resources to cope with the increased demand.”

Mrs Bourne added: “I would hope that, with the increase in funding now, we will start to see improvement in this.

“We are very aware of what’s happening and measures are afoot to put it right.

As many as 200 undergraduates met with leading businesses at a careers fair to talk about graduate job openings once they finish their degrees later this year.

More than 100 employment opportunities were posted by businesses from across the south of England, which is one of the top locations for graduate

work in the UK according to careers advice service Prospects.

Final-year student Onwa Wonci, studying accounting and finance at Chichester, will start a job at the West Sussex branch of Enterprise Rent-ACar in the summer.

She was offered a full-time position after completing a year-long placement, arranged at the university’s careers fair last year.

Onwa said: "It’s been a simple transition from university to the workplace, thanks partly to the skillset I learned on my degree.

` Health and wellbeing MAKING health and wellbeing everybody’s business was the vision shared by West Sussex County Council during a special audience with the chief executive of Public Health England, Duncan Selbie, last month.

Mr Selbie was welcomed to County Hall, Chichester, by West Sussex director of public health, Anna Raleigh, to learn about the strong health and wellbeing partnerships being forged across the county with the NHS, district and borough councils and others.

This highlighted the work taking place to promote a healthy lifestyle, improve air quality and support people to look after their mental wellbeing as well as the help being given to residents so they can retain their independence and remain healthy and well for longer.

Mr Selbie also heard about the success of the county-wide West Sussex Wellbeing Programme, which is delivered in partnership with local district and borough councils, and the new programme of work being carried out in the county this year that is aimed at reducing the number of falls among elderly residents.

Figures from 2016/17 show there were 4,495 emergency hospital admissions for fall-related injuries in West Sussex.

Mr Selbie said: “I was delighted to visit the county council and to speak with officers about some of the challenges facing the authority, as well as learn about the work they are already carrying out to help improve the health and wellbeing of residents in the county."

Volunteers are celebrated at Sage House

On Monday, volunteers at Sage House dementia hub enjoyed a special lunch and a thank-you from Caroline Nicholls.

During her year as High Sheriff, Mrs Nicholls has been keen to champion those who support and encourage young people in the county to combat disadvantage and fulfil their potential — and to raise awareness of all those who work to protect the county’s communities and keep them safe.

During the lunch, Mrs Nicholls, spoke to Chloe Davies and Nafisa Dewan, on a work placement at Sage House for ten weeks as part of their degree. She

then gave a speech in which she said: "I am absolutely delighted to be here. I think my first visit to here was probably about two years ago and I came to an empty shell. Now, you actually can see everything and it's so bright and warm and welcoming.

"I was delighted to come back in May, when the Duchess of Wessex came to open the centre, which was really exciting as it was my first royal visit as the High Sheriff.

"This place does hold special thoughts because about three years ago my step mother and my father both suffered from dementia-related illnesses. Sadly, they have now both gone.

"But I just do so wish there had been somewhere like Sage House where I could have brought them early on and my sister could have come along and got advice

"From a vision which began around five years ago to this today is absolutely superb. The work which you are all doing as volunteers is very, very special and I know that. Without people like you giving hours of your time, all the things we take for granted, just wouldn't happen. You should be very proud."

Dementia Support is a local charity working in partnership with voluntary and charitable organisations, the NHS, West Sussex County Council and other

statutory organisations, to create a unique community hub for dementia.

The hub is designed to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life for local people living with dementia, their family and carers.

Chief executive Sally Tabbner congratulated volunteers for their hard work. She said: "Our chairman of trustees said we have 42 volunteers.

What he doesn’t necessarily take into account are our board of trustees as well and there are a further 12 trustees.

"We couldn't do what we do here if it wasn't for our volunteers. Essentially, they are 50-odd people that we don't have to recruit and pay for.

Budget discussions for county council WEST SUSSEX County Council will meet today (Friday) to agree the budget for 2019/20 which includes a number of investments in key projects across the county.

The meeting, at County Hall, Chichester, will hear how the proposed 2019/20 budget of £574.9m has been balanced.

It will also hear about significant planned investments in key priority areas as set out in the West Sussex Plan.

These include: An additional £6.1 million new investment in children and young people’s services and an additional £7.3 million investment in adults and health.

Additional investment in special support centres to help to keep students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools with their peers and in their local area.

An additional £3 million in extra care schemes to help keep older people living independently for longer.

A further £44.5 million investment in a sustainable energy programme which includes the installation of solar farms and battery storage on unused council land.

A £5 million programme to create community hubs and protect key services by bringing them together under one roof. £13.8 million investment in corporate and fire fleet vehicles and £1.8 million in specialist fire equipment to support the fire and rescue service.

A £22.5 million investment in digital infrastructure supporting businesses and rural communities.

Since 2010, the council has saved more than £200m and in the same

period, government funding has been cut by £145m.

The county council faced a challenging financial gap of £50.9m for 2019/20 alone, due to increasing demand on social care services and a continued reduction in central government funding.

As a result, it has identified £23.4m-worth of savings across a number of services.

It is proposed the remaining amount is found by increasing council tax by 4.99 per cent, which includes a dedicated 2 per cent to fund adult social care.

This increase would mean an additional £1.27 per week for the average Band D household.

County council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “Over the years, we have delivered significant savings, so we’re used to working in a challenging financial situation.

“We are still delivering key services to our residents and supporting those in need, and fulfilling our statutory obligations under our West Sussex plan.

“It’s not all bleak – through our capital programme we are investing in our

communities across the county.

“When we need to, we are also investing to save and we are investing to generate much-needed income.”

Members of the county council will meet to formally agree the final budget and the level of council tax.

Michael Turner started volunteering by holding watercolour painting sessions at Sage House from day one. He said: "I really enjoy it. My mother had dementia for the last two years of her life and it was the early stages. Thank God she never forgot who I was, that would have been one of the worst things.

"Being here now for so long, I can see the changes in people, but what we do here, they do things with fun, it's very light-hearted. I enjoy it immensely, I get such enjoyment from it.

"You are giving relief to the carers as well, which is so important."

` County crowdfunding A CROWDFUNDING platform – a first for the south east – has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local good causes.

The West Sussex Crowd has currently helped 77 worthwhile groups raise funds since it launched last year in May. West Sussex residents have really got behind this crowdfunding platform with more than 1,000 backers pledging more than £200,000 to 38 successful projects.

Charities, sports clubs and music schools are among those to benefit so far.

Examples include the Regis School of Music, Grow Chichester Community Garden, Burpham Playground and the charity, Teens Construct to Connect.

Of the £223,076 raised, £140,060 was pledged by businesses, residents and partner funds. The other £75,006 has been awarded by West Sussex County Council through its community initiative fund.

Debbie Kennard, county council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “This is brilliant news.

"I am absolutely delighted to see the West Sussex Crowd is proving so successful and benefiting so many fantastic local projects.

“I would urge anyone looking to gather funds and support to join the crowd and see for yourselves the difference it can make!”

Love is in the air for the city's path SUPPORTERS of the Centurion Way Walking and Cycling Path met on Saturday to share their love of the path and nature and to recruit more members.

Chichester city councillor Sarah Sharp said: "It was great to see so many volunteers taking time out of their weekends to support Centurion Way. "We had home-made heart biscuits to give out to members of the public who stopped and signed up to the campaign.

"We still don't know the outcome of the confidential negotiations between the various landowners.

"It would be tragic if the end of Centurion Way was truncated and lost its wildlife and natural feel that makes it so appealing as a place for family

bikes rides and for dog walking.

"This route is key for many people's health and wellbeing, as well as being a valuable commuter route. We were out in force gathering support so that this doesn't get forgotten by the decision-makers.

"We also used the opportunity of the 'Love Your Path' event to gather up empty beer and cider cans and lots of other rubbish.

"A deposit scheme would help to encourage people not to throw away their rubbish.

"We know how much damage can be done to the natural world around us by the plastic some people throw away so carelessly so it was great to be able to start to clean up our path yesterday."

THE CITY'S MP has been challenged to debate Brexit by Lord Adonis.

It was ‘standing room only’ when Labour Peer and vice-chairman of the European Movement Lord Andrew Adonis addressed pro-EU supporters and campaigners at the Basil Shippam Centre in Chichester.

Lord Adonis had come to the city straight from a large pro-EU campaign event in Winchester, where he had been one of the key speakers.

He gave his views on the current political situation and what might

happen next, including a very real chance of Parliament accepting that another referendum, including an option to remain, was the only way to break the deadlock.

Moving on to the situation more locally, Lord Adonis said he would be happy to come back to Chichester and issued a public challenge to Chichester MP, Gillian Keegan, to debate Brexit with him in the city.

He stressed the importance of writing to your MP, however many times you had done so already, and whatever your publicly expressed views were on Brexit.

There was then a short opportunity for questions, during which Lord Adonis expressed support for 16-17 year olds

being included in the franchise for any further referendum.

The event was organised by the European Movement Portsmouth and Chichester branch. Spokesman John Wilton said: "We were delighted that Lord Adonis has found the time to come and address us in Chichester.

His positive message to us was 'Don’t give up', keep campaigning and keep writing to your MP. "The large turnout for the meeting demonstrated the level of determination in the local community to keep fighting for our place in Europe and to make local people aware of the damage that Brexit would do to our country and our people’s lives for decades to come."

The audience rightly gave a warm and enthusiastic welcome to the 55 instrumentalists who filled the Assembly Hall stage and, thanks to the hall’s acoustics, said to be the finest in Europe, every note and nuance of the popular programme could be heard and appreciated.

Film scores are often regarded as disposable music but Gibbons took on the project of reconstructing Malcolm Arnold’s score for the 1965 The Heroes of Telemark film, recreating the scenes in sound. A more familiar film theme, that of ET – Adventures on Earth, by John Williams, opened the second half of the programme.

Another link with film was Erich Korngold, whose Violin Concerto in D featured soloist Jennifer Pike in a lyrical performance. Melody was also at the heart of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5 in E minor with the orchestra conveying every nuance of expression.

Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s next concerts at Worthing are on March 10 and April 7. They will be in Chichester during June, during the city’s festival – don’t miss them.

CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE New Season 2019

Daniel Evans, Artistic Director CHICHESTER Festival Theatre’s Festival 2019 has been announced today by artistic director Daniel Evans, offering the colourful variety of work for which Chichester is renowned.

New for 2019 is The Spiegeltent, a unique venue for an eclectic range of events.

Festival 2019 includes powerful world premieres, two musicals, Shakespeare, pertinent revivals of 20th and 21st century classics and brand new family shows.

Headline actors include Hugh Bonneville, Clare Burt, Nancy Carroll, Hadley Fraser, Sheila Hancock, Dervla Kirwan, Gerald Kyd, Josie Lawrence, James Nesbitt, Hyoie O’Grady, Amara Okereke, John Simm and Rachael Stirling.

Directors new to the Festival are Nicole Charles, Paul Foster, Paul Miller, Daniel Hill and Holly Race Roughan, alongside Lucy Betts, Daniel Evans, Richard Eyre, Kate Hewitt, Rachel Kavanaugh, Dale Rooks and Jeremy Sams.

A programme of talks and activities will offer extra insight into Festival 2019. Highlights include talks with Tim Firth, Sheila Hancock and Roy Williams; a centenary celebration of Iris Murdoch; and a literary lunch with Daniel Rosenthal discussing his collection of letters from the National Theatre archive.

Sweatbox: A Prison Van in Motion is an immersive theatre experience offering a unique insight into the criminal justice system, performed by members of Clean Break.

Family friendly events range from Michael Morpurgo and Virginia McKenna reading extracts from The Butterfly Lion to community singalong Oh What A Beautiful Mornin’, and workshops for young people inspired by C.S. Lewis and Macbeth. Kate Mosse hosts a full programme of pre- and post-show discussions on each production.

In October 2019, a Spiegeltent will be installed next to the Festival Theatre on Oaklands Park – a unique venue with its own personality, style and atmosphere. As well as providing an immersive experience for Roy Williams’s Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads, it will play host to an eclectic mix of cabaret, music and special events: from a comedy club and drag night, to a quiz, a prologue scratch night and the annual Fun Palaces celebration on October 6. The full programme will be announced in May. Daniel Evans said: "Festival 2019 continues our aim of giving audiences the breadth of work they expect and relish. We’re premiering four plays: two by our new Writer-inResidence, Anna Ledwich, including a brand new adaptation of one of Michael Morpurgo’s own favourite books, The Butterfly Lion; Nicholas Wright’s fascinating 8 Hotels, which examines the political repercussions of private passions; and we’re delighted to be partnering with Headlong and The Lowry on Cordelia Lynn’s Hedda Tesman.

In a post-war land of plenty, Susan battles for her own body and mind, as Britain loses its role in the world.

Using a non-linear structure, the drama dips backwards and forwards in time to explore how the past and present coexist.

On its first appearance at the National Theatre in 1978, David Hare’s play caused a furore and is now accepted as a modern classic. His previous plays for Chichester include South Downs (2011) and Young Chekhov (2015).

CELEBRATED writer CS Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, splits his time between an ordered domestic routine at home with his brother, Warnie, and the academic rigour of his dispassionate, all-male Oxford college.

His evenings are spent replying to his many correspondents. One stands out: vivid, expressive, New York poet Joy Gresham. When she arrives in England with her young son, Douglas, everything Lewis believed to be true about life and love is thrown into question. And a relationship begins which will take them both to the extremities of pain and joy.

William Nicholson’s much-loved play premiered in the West End in 1989, winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and being nominated for a Tony Award on its subsequent Broadway run.

Originally, a 1985 television drama, it became a feature film in 1993.

Hugh Bonneville returns to Chichester to play Lewis, following his acclaimed performance in An Enemy of the People (2016). His many television and film appearances include Downton Abbey, W1A and Paddington.

Nancy Carroll (Hester Collyer) received

The Deep Blue Sea will be designed by Peter McKintosh with lighting by Natasha Chivers, music by Debbie Wiseman and sound by George Dennis.

HANDSOME cowboy Curly McLain is head over spurs for local farm owner Laurey Williams. But lonely ranchhand Jud Fry has his sinister sights set on her too.

But in mid-century American society, they are not all equals.

Three stories connect across time and across technologies as history haunts the present and secrets are unearthed by a community in turmoil.

Using digital technology and live action, this promenade performance through the streets of Chichester asks: can an individual alter history by changing the channel?

Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s renowned biennial outdoor productions include Grimm Tales (2017) and the award-winning Running Wild (2015).

CFT’s new writer-in-residence, Anna Ledwich,

adapted Beauty and the Beast for CFYT in 2017 and was co-Artistic Director of Theatre on the Fly at Chichester in 2012. Director Daniel Hill has devised and directed over 40 productions for young people, including promenade productions of Alice’s Adventures and Wind in the Willows.

Holly Race Roughan directs this vital exploration of motherhood, power and sabotage.

Cordelia Lynn was the recipient of the 2017 Harold Pinter Commission. Her works include One for Sorrow and Lela and Co for the Royal Court and the libretto for Miranda at the Opéra Comique, Paris.

Her plays, Best Served Cold (Vaults Festival) and Believers Anonymous (Rosemary Branch), were both directed by Holly Race Roughan.

Hedda Tesman will be designed by Anna Fleischle.

This Headlong co-production will play at The Lowry, Salford for three weeks, immediately following the Chichester run.

Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads

by Roy Williams Directed by Nicole Charles October 5 – November 2, The Spiegeltent SATURDAY October 7. Gina, landlady of The King George pub, has a lot on her plate. The England v Germany World Cup qualifying match is about to start, the pub football team is about to charge in and the TV’s on the blink.

Over the next few hours, national defeat looms and xenophobic tensions rise, fuelled by the inarticulate fury of the pub team captain, Lawrie, and the insidious propaganda of right-wing extremist Alan.

And while policeman Lee struggles to keep the peace, disillusioned squaddie Mark and Gina’s bullied son, Glen, are fighting their own demons.

Premiered at the National Theatre in 2002, Roy Williams’s ferocious, funny and disturbing play takes aim at what it means to be black, white and English in 21st century Britain. Scoring high on foul language, threat and vulgar humour, Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Roy Williams’s award-winning plays have also been staged at the RSC and the Royal Court. Nicole Charles’s recent work

includes Emilia at Shakespeare’s Globe and in the West End. Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads will be performed in The Spiegeltent, which will be transformed into a pub setting to create an immersive theatrical experience.

This faithful adaptation of L Frank Baum’s classic novel was originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and

Frantic farce leaves audience all at sea Theatre review 

Charlie Stemp, who delighted Chichester in his break-out starring role in Half a Sixpence in 2016, was the actor seemingly most at home amid the waves and troughs. As steward Dvornichek, his physicality in pretending to be aboard a transAtlantic liner and comic timing with the running gag of downing Cognac brought the first laughs.

He was also instrumental in making sense of the lightweight story, set in the 1930s, involving two

playwrights and a composer trying to finish writing their next work before arriving in New York, with difficulties caused by the composer's fiancee, actress Natasha (Issy Van Randwyck), and her leading man Ivor (Simon Dutton).

accent, presumably in tribute to Stoppard's inspiration, Ferenc Molnar's Play at the Castle.

Matthew Cottle, as the other playwright Gal, Rob Ostlere, in the role of lovelorn composer Adam, and Dutton coped better with both accents and flow of the play while the songs, by genuine musical maestro Andre Previn, were rather irrelevant.

Thank goodness for Charlie, who steered the ship into a calm anchorage.

Turkish delights bring warmth and satisfaction

Although it only has been opened for a few weeks, the owners spent months converting the former shop into a smart, bright comfortable venue, which has the unusual feature of an open cooking area where customers can see chefs at work at the

barbecue-type grill.

As three of us were dining, we were able to sample a number of dishes with choices guided by the smiling and helpful staff, although the menu also gave good descriptions for people who are unfamiliar with Turkish cuisine.

While trying to decide from the long list of both hot and cold starters, we enjoyed olives with flat bread, which also came in useful to accompany the moreish dips and filling lentil soup. An interesting small touch was a fresh lemon slice to squeeze into the delicious soup.

`New luxury restaurant in Chichester

- no easy task with so much choice, which included vegetarian offerings, fish and salads. Most of the meat dishes are based on lamb or chicken and we took the advice of our waiter and plumped for a lamb shank, lamb shish and chargrilled king prawns.

My lamb shank was a substantial piece of deliciously tender meat, which fell off the bone, while the shish was equally succulent but with slightly more of a kick, an acknowledgement of the restaurant's use of herbs flown in from an organic farm in Turkey. THe prawns disappeared quickly - a sure sign of decent cooking.

THe shank was served as a casserole with carrots and small potatoes, the shish had a

delicate yogurt and lemon sauce while bulgar wheat and salad were served alongside.

Although we were probably too full for dessert, we made an effort to try wonderfully crispy yet soft baklava accompanied with a superb raspberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream.

Turkish wine is available alongside bottles from more usual wine-producing countries and Reina Kitchen is making a feature of its cocktails, including house specials.

Tangmere Aviation Museum open for half-term TODAY (Friday) the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum opens its doors to visitors following its annual two-month closure to the public.

In addition to repainting and cleaning the museum, a number of important aircraft and display changes have been made.

Visitors this half-term will see a major change to the location of aircraft, cockpits and simulators in the Merston aircraft hall. The jet aircraft associated with the World Airspeed Record attempts (Meteor, Hunter and Swift) are now displayed, together and the full size Lysander replica, purchased by the museum last year, which has been moved to a corner of the hall to enable an additional exhibition on ‘Tangmere and the SOE’ to be curated by the curatorial team.

This exhibition includes a film on the recruitment, training and operational activities of SOE agents (spies). Additionally, displays from last year’s successful ‘Tangmere Aerodrome 100’ exhibition have now been

moved into the museum to provide visitors with an insight on the formation and early years of RAF Tangmere.

For younger visitors, the museum has created ten family activities, including the ever popular ‘Tangmere Teddy Bear Challenge’, which family members can pick up from the new ‘Family Activity Station’.

Adults can ‘fly’ the Lightning fast jet cockpit simulator for no additional charge to the admittance fee and in addition to other interactive simulators there are cockpits for both adults and children to enjoy. For refreshments, look no further than the NAAFI tea room.

The museum is looking forward to another successful year and hoping to improve on last year’s record of number of visitors (over 33,000).

There's the only traditional working print shop in the south of England, where you can have a go at printing your own souvenir certificate to take home.

Certificates can be personalised with your name. Also, on February 20, you can have a go at wood turning in the woodturners’ workshop.

Children will be supervised by skilled volunteers to have a go at turning out small wooden ornaments. Most activities are included in the admission price. There may be small fees for some special activities, and donations are always welcome.

Community News & Views ST WILFRID'S HOSPICE is inviting members of the public to join either the Ride London Event on August 4, or the London to Brighton Ride on September 15.

Enjoy the great outdoors on two wheels and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

The Prudential Ride London Event follows a fantastic 100 mile route from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, through closed roads in the capital into Surrey’s stunning countryside. The London to Brighton Bike Ride covers 55 miles from Clapham Common to Brighton beach, and is a more leisurely opportunity for those looking for their first event ride.

For both events, St Wilfrid’s is now offering a transfer service for riders and their bikes from the new hospice in Bosham to the start line, and then collection at the finishing line with return to Bosham. This hassle saving service costs just £30 for each event, making these events easier to participate in than ever.

Community event manager Alex Burch said: "If you haven't been on a bike in a while, well it really is ‘just like riding a bike’!

"With a little practice and support, it’s easy to get confident again. You are not expected to be a professional to take on these challenges! A bike ride can be anything from 10 minutes to an hour. Cycling to work twice a day is the perfect training spot!”

Pre-event support includes training sessions, fundraising advice, a special St Wilfrid’s Cycling Jersey and an after-event celebration party.

Joining the Rides is a fun way of raising money for the hospice, an independent, local charity that has been supporting those in the community who are living with a terminal illness for more than 30 years.

COUNCILS across the south east of England are being urged to declare a ‘climate emergency’, after a ground-breaking meeting in Horsham on Saturday February 2.

Held to mark World SOS Climate Emergency Day, the meeting brought together for the first time environmental groups from 11 towns from Surrey, and East and West Sussex. Over 107 people aged from 10 to 80 were present.

Chichester city councillor Sarah Sharp said: "I was privileged to be the only elected councillor in the whole of West Sussex (and a bit of Surrey) who spoke at the West Sussex-wide meeting about climate change.

"I used a small section of my talk to refer anonymously to some quotes from other councillors and their rather different attitudes towards climate change.

"There is belief that climate change is due to molten rock in Alaska acting as an electric blanket. Others believe that we can leave this to international and national governments and that we are doing enough at the local level.

"In my view, it is important that every individual and every council engages with this topic - arguably the most important that our generation will face.

"The group heard lots of other three minute talks from transition groups throughout the county. We broke into groups to discuss what we should do. There was pretty much universal approval that we should focus our efforts on encouraging our councils to declare a climate emergency, like so many other UK cities and towns and even Cornwall County Council have done.

Various ways of doing this were discussed.

"The most important being to encourage individuals to contact the candidates of all parties to ask them whether they are able to take a pledge about climate change in their manifestos.

This could be done by letter-writing - or even better asking to meet face to face."

The forum is an independent body which aims to protect and improve access to the countryside by providing advice and getting involved with important access projects.

The group is currently recruiting new volunteer members and would welcome hearing from anyone with an interest in access to the countryside, including land owners and managers.

Forum chairman, Horsham resident Graham Elvey, said: "I have personally always found it incredibly rewarding to be given the opportunity, through membership of the forum, of being involved in improving countryside access.

“Whether this is by working with other volunteers, using our influence to guide local authorities and other organisations, or involvement with works on the ground, the forum positively represents all who use, care for, and enjoy the countryside.

The forum holds four meetings a year and members also undertake site visits.

HAINES BOATYARD, nestled on the foreshore at Itchenor, is well known for its highly skilled wooden keelboat and GRP dinghy repair and boatyard services. Recently, the company has been undertaking some more unusual work in renovating and maintaining wooden and GRP rowing boats.

The full range of skills and experience of the in-house shipwrights have been engaged in the renovation of a Solent Galley. Originally built for racing in Portsmouth Harbour and its environs, the Solent Galley is a 30ft long, clinker-built, fixed seat rowing boat with four oars and a cox. They are light, slim and fast and have some notable achievements to their names including holding the record for circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight.

‘Iccanore’, a new GRP Celtic long boat, arrived at Itchenor in June, 2018, to substitute for ‘Bembridge’ while she went through a major refurbishment in July and August that involved the replacement of 24 wooden ribs by the shipwrights at Haines Boatyard. The Celtic Longboat was chosen as its rowing characteristics are very close to those of a Solent Galley and allowed the very popular Chichester Harbour outings to continue uninterrupted.

With a steady growth in the popularity of rowing and frequent outings from Itchenor Sailing Club, both craft require regular maintenance, upkeep and repairs. The highly skilled shipwrights at Haines Boatyard have been advising and assisting the volunteer rowers in the skills of wood preparation, steam bent timbers, varnishing and GRP repairs to keep both craft in tip-top condition.

The qualified yacht surveyor at Haines boatyard ensures that both craft are regularly checked and overseen to keep them on the water for the weekly, year-round rowing outings on Chichester Harbour. Such is the popularity of the rowing that there is talk of a new generation of brand new Solent Galleys being built in wood -that should keep the Haines shipwrights and volunteers busy for a few months!

Main dish with mango Jerk chicken kebabs with mango salsa Ingredients: • 2 tsp jerk seasoning • 1 tbsp olive oil • Juice 1 lime • 4 skinless chicken breasts, chopped into chunks • 1 large yellow pepper, cut into 2cm cubes • 100g bag rocket leaves, to serve For the salsa • 320g pack mango chunks, diced • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and diced • Bunch spring onions, finely chopped • 1 red chilli, chopped (optional)

Method: 1. Mix together the jerk seasoning, olive oil and lime juice. Toss the chicken in it and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 20 mins, or up to 24 hours.

3. Make the salsa by mixing all the ingredients together with some seasoning – add a chopped red chilli if you like extra heat.

5. Heat the grill or barbecue to Medium. Thread the chicken onto 8 metal skewers divided by the yellow peppers – aim for 3 of each per skewer. Cook for 8 mins each side until cooked through and lightly charred. Serve with the salsa and rocket leaves.

Dessert with mango Passion-mango delight with coconut whip Ingredients: • 50g desiccated coconut • 2 tbsp granulated white sugar • 1 egg white For the passion-mango mousse • 4 really ripe mangoes • 6 really ripe passion fruits • Juice 1 lime • 2 gelatine leaves • 150ml double cream • 2 large egg whites • 85g golden caster sugar For the coconut whip • 1 large egg white • 3 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tbsp Malibu Method: 1. First collect 8 glasses to serve your mousses in, and put to one side. Put the coconut and granulated sugar in a bowl and, using a hand blender, whizz together until finely chopped. In another bowl, froth the egg white using a fork. Dip each glass rim into the egg, shake off any excess, then dip into the coconut mixture. Leave to set and dry.

2. To make the mousse, cut all the flesh from the mangoes. Put the fruit into a blender or food

processor with the pulp from the passion fruit and lime juice. Blend to a smooth purée, then set a sieve over a large bowl and sieve to remove any passion fruit seeds. Put the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water to soften.

3. Heat the cream in a small saucepan until it’s just about to start bubbling. Turn off the heat.

Squeeze out the softened gelatine leaves to remove excess water, then stir into the cream. When they have completely melted and no gelatine streaks remain, stir this into the mango mixture.

4.

Beat the egg whites until stiff. Add the sugar and beat to a thick, shiny meringue mixture.

Fold a little of the mango mixture into the meringue with a big metal spoon or spatula. Gently fold in the rest (you’re trying to get rid of all the meringue streaks, while retaining as much air in the mousse as possible . Ladle into a jug and divide between the glasses. Chill overnight to set.

5.

To serve, beat the egg whites until stiff. Add the sugar and beat to a shiny, thick meringue, then beat in the Malibu. Spoon into a piping bag (or food bag with the corner snipped off ) and pipe a blob onto each mousse. To save time, do this 1 hr ahead and pop them back into the fridge.

Through the times of Chichester's Red Cross Written by Amanda Rogan, learning officer and Pat Saunders, volunteer at the Novium Museum THE RED CROSS was the brainchild of Swiss businessman Henry Dunant who had been saddened by the suffering of soldiers during the Battle of Solferino (Second Italian War of Independence) in 1859.

He proposed creating national relief societies made up of volunteers to be trained in peacetime to provide help and relief in war time. The founding charter was drawn up in Geneva in 1863. In Britain, however, a relief society was not established until 1870 and was originally known as the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War. It was later renamed The Red Cross in 1905.

In 1907, a permanent structure of local branches was adopted and extended the presence of the British Red Cross to communities around the country.

The Red Cross needed many skilled volunteers for its wartime role. The Voluntary Aid Scheme was introduced in 1909 and ensured that voluntary aid detachments (VADs) were formed across the UK. Their members would provide aid to the territorial medical forces in times of war.

At the outbreak of the First World War in

August, 1914, the British Red Cross and the Order of St John joined together to form the Joint War Committee. They organised staff and volunteers, undertook fundraising activities as well as supplying machinery and services at home and in conflict areas.

All members were trained in first aid and some trained in nursing, cookery, hygiene and sanitation.

In May, 1915, the first wave of injured soldiers returned to Chichester and were met at the railway station by Red Cross volunteers who acted as stretcher bearers, taking casualties to hospitals and convalescence homes in the area. Red Cross volunteers and VADs offered support to nursing and medical staff at Graylingwell Hospital, where many wounded men were taken.

Volunteers often worked long days to provide vital help to trained medical staff.

The Red Cross had a team of ‘searchers’ who attempted to find out what had happened to men who had gone missing in action.

When the Second World War broke out in September, 1939, the Joint War Organisation was formed again. The Red Cross undertook duties similar to those in the First World War but also undertook additional roles such as providing support after air raids as well as packing and dispatching parcels to British prisoners of war.

Fundraising activities took place throughout the district with many households taking part in the ‘Penny-aWeek’ fund which deducted one penny a week from workers’ wages and supported the activities of the Red Cross. Various events took place throughout Chichester, including the Victory Garden Show in July, 1941, which was held in aid of the Red Cross Agricultural Fund.

In 1975, the Red Cross moved into new premises, All Saints Church, which had been closed for several years. A secretary, Mrs Enid Saunders, was hired to run the day-today activities, including answering queries from the public and issuing medical loans (items like wheelchairs, commodes) to those recently discharged from hospital.

The centre (which included the main part of the church, as well as the annex on the north side) was open on Thursday mornings offering a thrift service. People took in good quality clothes to be sold and the Red Cross

received a ten per cent share from all sales.

A caretaker was employed to do the cleaning and to see that the medical loans were thoroughly disinfected. The centre had its own ambulance to use at events where first aid was provided.

One afternoon per week, a party was held at the centre for house-bound people who were otherwise socially isolated or for some of the Graylingwell’s elderly patients. Volunteer drivers would collect the housebound and bring them to the centre and an entertainer was also hired.

In 2004, the centre was taken over and is currently occupied by a private company.

Local Red Cross volunteers still assist in emergency events, including a 2011 fire in the centre of Chichester where they provided refreshments for the emergency services. Chichester is also home to a Red Cross charity shop, located in North Street, and anyone wishing to volunteer will find a range of opportunities available from first aid provision at events, supporting people in their own homes, fundraising, translation and arranging equipment hire.

Kia triumphs again at the if awards THREE is Kia’s lucky number once again.

Following the launch of the all-new thirdgeneration Kia Ceed, now on-sale across Europe in three different body-styles, the three newcomers have each received an iF Award for design.

This triple triumph in the world-renowned design competition represents the third consecutive year in which Kia has picked up a hat-trick of iF design awards, following similar successes in 2017 and 2018.

This achievement underscores Kia’s reputation for first-class design, which, for over a decade, has been shaped by Peter Schreyer, president of design and chief design officer for Kia Motors. The brand won its first iF Award in 2010, and has created at least one prize-winning model in every year since. Kia has now been awarded a total of 18 iF Awards for its vehicle designs.

The latest trophies have been awarded to each of the three all-new Ceed variants: the

five-door Ceed hatchback and Sportswagon models, launched in mid-2018, and the allnew ProCeed five-door shooting brake, which went on-sale in Europe this month.

A true European, the new model range has been designed at Kia’s European design centre in Frankfurt under the direction of Peter Schreyer and Gregory Guillaume, European head of design. Engineering and development was carried out by the brand’s research and development centre in Rüsselsheim, and all versions are manufactured in Slovakia.

Clear, straight lines characterise the design of the Ceed family, which takes inspiration from the Kia Stinger fastback grand tourer – itself an iF Award winner in 2018. The fivedoor Ceed hatchback is wider and lower than its predecessor, while the cabin is positioned further towards the rear of the car, for a sportier stance and shape. In profile, the powerful C-pillar gives the upper window line an elegant ‘half-moon’ shape.

The Ceed Sportswagon brings more space than ever to the compact class: the thirdgeneration model has increased in length, and offers owners more luggage space (625 litres) than most of its rivals, and even a number of larger vehicles. With its intelligent proportions and a new dynamic design, the Ceed Sportswagon is sportier than any of its predecessors.

The ProCeed features a completely new design, and is the first compact shooting brake from a mainstream manufacturer. The ProCeed merges a stunning, elegant design with the space and versatility of a tourer, standing out markedly from its siblings with its own unique posture and proportions. 1,422 mm in height, it is the lowest-slung vehicle in the entire C-segment.

The defining element of its profile is the

dynamic roofline, which ends in the steeply raked rear windscreen.

The broad spectrum of the latest technologies includes lane follow assist system and forward collisionavoidance assist with pedestrian recognition (depending on grade).

Youth Offending Service - Appropriate Adult – West Sussex Youth Offending Service

West Sussex Youth Offending Service (YOS) works with children, young people, families, victims, communities and partner agencies to reduce and prevent youth crime. The main purpose of this role is to support young people aged 10 – 17 when they have been arrested and held in police custody in West Sussex. Tasks include: supporting and assisting the young person; ensuring the young person understands their rights; ensuring that the police act fairly and respect the rights of the young person; ensuring effective communication between the young person, police and others; and raising any concerns around the safety and well-being of the young person. You must be 21 years old or over to apply and they require a commitment of at least 1 year.

General Volunteer – The Regis Centre

The Regis Centre provides professional and commercial entertainment in the theatre to the people of Bognor Regis, as well as facilities for local people to engage in the performing arts. Volunteers are required to carry out various tasks within the Centre. There are various opportunities such as working in the Charity shop, Cafe, Box office, Administration, Stage work, Cleaning and general DIY. When there is an evening show some volunteers act as Ushers, cafe helpers and ice cream sellers. If you think you could help out with one or more of these tasks they would love to hear from you.

Self-advocacy Group Volunteer – Impact Initiatives

Impact provides support to 4 self-advocacy groups for people with learning disabilities across West Sussex. They have a volunteer opportunity to support Voice at their monthly meeting in Bognor Regis on the 1st Thursday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. Voice is a user-led group, run by and for people with learning disabilities with the help of the paid Group Supporter employed by Impact Initiatives. They aim to help each other to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to have a say in the things that affect them, raise awareness of their concerns and make life better for people with learning disabilities. At their meetings they talk about the things that are important to them.

The volunteer would work alongside the group facilitator and offer practical help at the meeting as well as helping group members to speak up for themselves and participate in the meetings.

Drivers and Outings Assistants – Contact 88

Contact 88 is a transport service for elderly and disabled people living in Chichester and the surrounding area. They provide a varied programme of outings (pub lunches, visits to places of interest and shopping trips) throughout the year. The “door-to-door” service and social contact are very important to elderly and disabled people; many of the passengers would otherwise be housebound and some have been going out with Contact 88 regularly for many years. They are looking for more volunteer Drivers and Outings Assistants for when they take elderly and disabled people out for trips, including collecting fares from clients where appropriate. You must be a patient, outgoing, enthusiastic and sociable person who is happy to work with elderly and disabled people.

Blues look to make it four in a row PostSport after narrow win over Sussex rivals CHICHESTER RFC's Paul Colley has praised his squad for stepping up and pulling the Blues away from the London South One dropzone.

The Oaklands Park side have now won their last three in a row, the latter of those being a 22-18 victory against leaders Brighton in front of a home crowd.

With a further match on familiar territory coming tomorrow against sixth-place Thurrock, Chi will want to continue their fine form and put more distance between them and the relegation zone.

Speaking after the Brighton win, Colley said: “The last few weeks have seen the squad really pull together - player availability has improved and performances on the pitch have been excellent.

"Havant, Dartfordians and, in particular, Brighton, gave us different challenges, but to a man the squad has stepped up to meet them.

"There is still a long way to go and we need more of the same. Hopefully, we will have a big crowd at Oaklands Park next week to take on the notoriously tough to beat Thurrock.”

Chi started on the front foot against their Sussex rivals, taking the lead through an early Henry Anscombe drop goal. But Brighton hit

back with a converted try. 3-7.

It stayed that way until 10 minutes before the break when Richard Ives dived over the line after some dominating forwards play.

The visitors rallied though and, despite being reduced to 14 for a late tackle on Anscombe, they bagged another score plus a penalty to take a 10-15 lead into the break.

Blues regained their composure and re-took the lead when Ben Polhill gathered a loose ball.

The lead was extended when Rhys Thompson ran the ball in from 40 yards.

A late penalty closed the gap to 22-18 and Brighton spurned a golden chance to win the match when a player slipped five yards out to gift the win to Chi. --Bognor RFC warmed up for their crunch clash with second-place Sandown & Shanklin tomorrow with a narrow 33-34 win at New Milton last weekend.

It means they stay third in the Hampshire Premier but level on points with the Isle of Wight side, having played one match more.

With Sandown the visitors to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (time - TBC), Bognor know that a victory will put them in pole position to seal the runners-up spot .

f 12 Tone Zone members finished the Worthing Half Marathon

BOGNOR Tone Zone's Kari Mack continued her impressive form on the road by coming home first of the club's cohort at the Worthing Half Marathon.

The rain stayed away this weekend.

However, it was extremely windy along the prom for the popular 13 mile race.

But Kari was not deterred as she came home with another very impressive time of 1 hour 26 minutes.

Another impressive performance was Anna Kari-Enes with 1:37 while Martin Playford grabbed one of two personal bests of the day with 1:49.

Ben Leney, Peter Ramsdale and Stan Mack all finished under 1:55 while Natalie Tribe battled through the wind to snatch a PB of 1:57.

Stuart Thomson and Lucy-Jayne Isitt also finished under the two hour mark while Zoe Hemes, Richard Hemsley and Bushka Sklandanek rounded off the Tone Zone entries with sub-2:30 finishes.

Back indoors, the youngsters from

Chichester Athletics Club will be looking to continue their fine form in the Sussex Sportshall competition.

A small squad of just six athletes took part in the first county event of the year last month but still managed to emerge with a hat-trick of first places from their efforts.

There was a double win in the two-lap sprint with new Sussex U11 record holder James Taylor maintaining his unbeaten run for the season with another “A” string win. He was backed up well by Sam Cato who ensured maximum points by winning the “B” string Ethan Cooper then scored for the team in both the long jump and speed bounce.

For the girls, Fleur Hollyer maintained her unbeaten run in the speed bounce. She also finished third in a hard fought two lap sprint.

For the under-13 girls, both Amelie McGurk and Lucy Hollyer had a busy afternoon coring in the four lap, speed bounce, long jump and shot putt before combining well in the eight lap paarlauf at the end of the match.

TRAMPOLINING: The Regis School pupils Izzy Hauxwell, Rosie Budge, Zoe Maskell and Finlay Russell are set to perform on the national stage after qualifying for trampolines National Development Southern Regional Championships to be held late March in Eastleigh.

City have silverware in their sights ahead of Saltdean semi

Lions lack the killer instinct PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea believes his side's inability to finish sides off has cost the club dear this season.

A promotion push and perhaps even some silverware was the aim for those associated with the Nyetimber Lane side at the start of the season.

But an injury crisis led to a poor run of form during the winter months which has seen the Lions slip down into midtable of the SCFL Premier.

Now, attention has switched towards rebuilding for next season with a number of young players given the chance to shine.

But joint-managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds gained an insight into what is needed to challenge at the top when they suffered a 3-1 reverse at home to Newhaven last weekend.

With an equally tough match away at fourth-place Horsham YMCA to come tomorrow (3pm), the Pagham chairman will want to see a reaction from his young side.

Shea said: "It is a very competitive league. It looks like Chichester and Newhaven are the frontrunners and are set for promotion. The reason

they are is because they have finished teams off "There's not much difference in terms of games lost between us and those two sides.

The big difference is we've drawn far too many."

Despite eight places separating them in the league, Pagham matched Newhaven for long periods of the match last weekend.

Harry Prisk opened the scoring for the Lions after he converted a through ball from Harry Hendricks, who was playing his last match for the club before moving to Devon.

But the Dockers showed their clinical streak, equalising before the break with a Robbie Keith header.

Into the second half the visitors sealed the win as Lee Robinson and Callum Connor struck late Shea added: "I have been surprised by the quality of the teams this year.

"We went to Eastboune United recently who were bottom but had a new manager and new chairman and there was not a lot between us on a cold Tuesday and we drew 0-0.

"They’ve now carried on that form, so there's not much between people."

CHICHESTER CITY'S season could get even better as they look to make it into a cup final for the second year in a row.

Miles Rutherford's high-flying side made 2018 a year to remember when they defeated local rivals Pagham to lift the RUR Cup. A year on, the SCFL Premier leaders have a chance to reach the final of another competition when they face off against Saltdean United in the semi final of the Peter Bentley Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm) at Steyning's The Shooting Field.

With their opponents already taking four points off Chi this season in the league, the Oaklands Park side will want to get one over the Tigers, who are fifth in the league.

Before then, City will head to Crawley Down Gatwick in the league tomorrow (3pm) looking to keep their lead at the top of the league intact.

They do so off the back of a 1-1 draw at Peacehaven, a result that was only sealed thanks to a late strike by Sam Ndlovu.

It means City are now 13 games unbeaten in the league although with second-place Newhaven winning, their lead of five points was cut to just three.

Smith: there's long way to go

CHICHESTER CITY Ladies boss Aaron Smith is calling on his players to keep pushing as they look to bounce back from their first league defeat of 2019.

The leaders of the Women's National Southern Premier dominated proceedings against Oxford United at the weekend.

But a failure to convert chances meant Chi fell to a 1-0 loss at the in-form side from the city of spires.

Chi will have a bit of time to reflect on the match after the midweek match against Portsmouth was postponed and no fixture

this weekend before returning to action on February 24 at Cardiff City.

By that point their five point lead at the top could be reduced as second-place Coventry United play one of their four matches in hand.

But speaking after the Oxford defeat, Smith remained positive, saying: "It will be a blow but Cov have a lot of games as they have had a lot of postponements.

"They will have a lot of games in a short space of time, they may fatigue or get injuries - you just don't know.

"There's a long way to go and pre-season we

wanted to finish top four in this division.

"We want to play the way we want to play and get my philosophy through the players that's working.

"Top four was the original plan but now we're here we want to keep pushing, keep playing, keep smiling and get more points and see where we finish."

It could have been oh so different for City as they had the better chances in a tight match against Oxford.

Molly Clark, Tash Stephens and new addition Kim Stenning all spurned chances.

But it was United who took the lead on the hour mark when, after Chi failed to clear a corner, Georgia Timms headed home.

It was Chi's third defeat of the season and compared to a year ago, they are 14 points better off at this stage of the campaign - a fact the manager was keen to point out.

Smith said: "I'm looking at the positives.

They were a Super League side last year "They have only lost one in the last seven and we knew they would be strong and press us.

"While they were in the Super League we were a mid table side in this division and they are celebrating for beating us which shows how far we have come.

"We dominated the game and I can't ask for more than that. The ball didn't go in the net and a few decisions which could have gone our way with a different ref didn't get given but on the whole I'm happy with how we played."

Home comforts key for Sids' Rec return SIDLESHAM will be out to show that home is where the heart is as they return to the Recreation Ground for the first time in a month tomorrow.

Steve Bailey's side have proved to be more than a match for their rivals on their return to SCFL Division One. With a third of the season left, Sids sit tenth in the 17-team division, 14 points clear of the bottom three.

But Bailey will want to ensure his side continue fighting to the end - and they can show other teams what they are made of when they kick off a three game home stand against a series of tough opponents.

Tomorrow, fourth-place AFC Varndeanians are the visitors (3pm) before third-place

Bexhill United visit the following week.

Fifth bottom Oakwood round off the home stand on March 2.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Selsey are still fourth despite an excellent 1-0 victory over Bexhill last weekend.

Joe Bennett got the goal for the Blues which made it eight games unbeaten for Daren Pearce's side.

Next up is a trip to seventh-place Hailsham before the rearranged Division One cup tie at Wick on Tuesday (7.45pm).

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will want to play their first match in three weeks when they head to Upper Beeding tomorrow (2pm).

The Robins sit seventh in the division while their opponents have slipped to third bottom.

Pearce urges Rocks to kick on as playoff chase gathers pace Next Game

BISHOP'S ST'FORD (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes the club are finally hitting their stride as they look to make it five wins from six to continue a playoff push.

Rocks continued their fine start to 2019 with a commanding 2-0 win over AFC Hornchurch last weekend.

Those three points lifted the Nyewood Lane side up to third in the Bostik Premier and gave fans hope that a place in the end of season lottery is in their grasp.

A win at Bishop's Stortford tomorrow (3pm) would do that cause no end of good.

But, in an extremely tight division where just six points separate Rocks and Brightlingsea in 12th, Pearce knows that Bognor must keep on picking up points to seal a top five finish.

With a number of key players nearing a return from injury, the Bognor boss told The Post that the playoffs was still achievable.

He said: " My aim every year is to make sure we don’t get relegated. We didn’t achieve that last year, but I think we’ve done that already this term.

"As the league is so competitive it could go to the last few games of season whether you end up in the playoffs or finish halfway.

"Our next aim is to finish in the playoffs but it will be a challenge unless we can get everyone fit.

"With a fit squad then we can definitely make them."

The win at home to AFC Hornchurch was sealed thanks to a goal in each half.

Against battling opponents, it was two tough tackling midfielders who did the damage with the returning Theo Widdrington slotting home a first half penalty before Richard Gilot lashed home the second just after the break after good work from skipper Harvey Whyte.

In truth, Rocks never really looked troubled - but Pearce is warning that tomorrow's trip to Hertfordshire to face a side who have won three of their last four will be far from easy.

Their task will be made even tougher with long-term absentees Keaton Wood, Calvin Davies and Gary Charman joined by Jimmy Wild on the injured list for the trip to the other side of the M25.

There are also doubts to top-scorer Jimmy Muitt, who missed the Hornchurch match, as well as defender Chad Field and Mason Walsh, who picked up knocks in the last outing.

Pearce said there was some positive news coming out of the Rocks camp though - with Wood and Davies returning to training for the first time in months.

Pearce said: "There’s the slight possibility that all seven will be missing [for the trip to Stortford].

"It does make it challenging but I'll have to do what I've always done - I'll have to pick up the phone and ask for favours but people don’t like letting good players go."

Albion await in the Senior Cup THEY stand just one match away from an end of season showdown at a Premier League ground.

But Rocks' bid for a first Sussex Senior Cup final in five seasons could see them come up against the favourites for the title.

Bognor have been drawn against either Brighton & Hove Albion development squad or SCFL Premier side Eastbourne Town in the last four of the county cup.

The match is due to be played at Lancing's Culver Road on either Wednesday, February 27, or Tuesday, March 5.

With victory on either of those evenings gifting Bognor fans a day out at The Amex Stadium, it will be an evening that many at the Nye Camp will be looking forward to.

But it will not be an easy task - particularly if Albion win through in their quarter final.

The Seagulls' development side have won the competition for the last two seasons.

With a host of youth internationals and players with top flight experience in their ranks - as well as on loan Rock Joe Tomlinson, the Albion youngsters have performed well against other Premier League under 23 sides.

This included defeating Nicky Butt's Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup.

THEY call this time of the season moving time as things, in a very competitive division, can change so quickly.

We have turned it round a bit since I last wrote this column a fortnight ago.

That's what it happens when everything is so tight.

When you have two good results in the space of a week then you can get right back in it again.

The only thing that is slightly annoying is that if we had managed to do this all season then perhaps we would be challenging the top two and be right amongst it.

I don't think we played as good football as we could do in the 2-0 win over AFC Hornchurch last weekend.

But playing good, attractive football is not always the reason for winning games; you have to do the ugly stuff well.

In the matches against Burgess Hill, Worthing and again on Saturday we worked hard and got the three points.

I wouldn't say the result was flattering - they didn't cause us too many problems and I think the scoreline was fair.

We were comfortable throughout and did not really push ourselves.

I think we were focussed on what Jack said before the match - everyone wants to play nice football but the main thing was the result.

You can play as badly as you want but as long as you get the win that's all that matters.

It was nice too to pick up the man of the match award, too.

Sometimes people ask me what's the secret to performing well. The truth is I don't know!

Perhaps I've been listening to Ole Gunnar Solskjear who said that football is all about passing forward, working hard and that's it.

I don't really like Manchester United but that really sunk in!

In all seriousness, Theo coming back in helped us out.

It's also good to have the Pompey lads up top.

You always know with those two in the team we have a chance of scoring and winning matches.

You saw that at Merstham when Dan got the ball as it was fed to him.

Then, out of nowhere, he rolled the defender and slotted one home.

As for Brad, he can put them in from anywhere so it's great to have them on your side.

That match at Merstham was a real team performance.

We went 3-5-2 to keep it more solid at the back and it was just the case of everyone working hard for each other.

We defended hard towards the end and the pitch was not great, it was just about winning ugly.

We know we have it in there.

Bishop's Stortford will be similar tomorrow.

I think the match will depend on how we approach it.

If we go there to play nice football then we could get beat. But if we graft and fight to get at least get a point then you never know what may happen.

A point away is never a bad point but if we want to get up there and challenge the top two we have to look to get all three.

With the position we are in now, it will be disappointing not to get into the playoffs We still have got to play Haringey and Dorking - it will be difficult to catch them but we need to give it a go, take each game as it comes and try to win it.

If we win six or seven games in a row, then we could get close.

We also had the news that we could be playing Albion in the semi final of the Senior Cup. The first thing I thought was that if I play right back I will kick Joe Tomlinson!

It will definitely a footballing game.

But we have to do ugly things well, need to press and put them under pressure and see where it gets us.
