Refusal for extra car spaces in a car park

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE number of spaces at one of the city's car parks cannot be increased, councillors have decided.

Planning committee members ouncillors declined a proposal at the City Walls car park (also known as Southgate car park) to change the use of land to extend the existing adjacent car park by increasing its capacity by approximately 12 spaces.

THe car park, which is owned by Southgate Car Park Management Ltd, is accessed from Avenue de Chartres and comprises an asphalt surface with marked spaces for 54 vehicles.

THe application, which was red carded

by Cllr Len Macey, was to extend the existing privately owned car park to the west to provide an extra 12 car parking spaces and it was amended to include a viewing area for the city wall next to the car park.

THis would include information boards giving people an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the historic wall.

THe site of the proposed extension is currently part of a field which contains shrubs and young trees and was described by officers as being used to dispose of grass cuttings from the field.

Although the applicant, Mr Andrew Finnamore, explained that granting permission would give a good view of the bastion, councillors were concerned about the implications of people crossing the car park to view it.

Mr Finnamore said: "It's a balance of

perspective. I'd like to draw you to the the district council archaeology report which says: 'THe residentiary bastion is the best-preserved of Chichester's Roman bastions and is the tallest surviving Roman-built structure in West Sussex. A decent close-up view of this remarkable building would be a very positive thing.' THat is the words from their report."

Cllr Richard Plowman said: "THis is an interesting one. It's about balance.

Cllr Carol Purnell said: "Why is this application at this committee? It's here because it was red carded by a councillor who said they had information.

"THat councillor is not present and is not speaking. I think that's a procedure which needs to be tightened up on."

Offender frightened of needles A TATTOOED drug-driver claimed he failed to provide a blood sample due to his fear of needles.

About 11pm on September 11, police on the A27 at Tangmere spotted a Vauxhall which was being driven without any lights on.

THe driver was pulled over and identified as Rudi Gomes, a building labourer, of Neville Duke Way, Tangmere.

Due to his demeanour and a strong smell coming from his vehicle, he was required to undergo a roadside DrugWipe, which tested positive for cannabis.

THe 29-year-old was arrested and taken to provide an evidential sample of blood, but he refused, initially saying he didn’t feel he was impaired. However, he later told

police he did not like needles. A small quantity of cannabis was also found in his underwear.

He was subsequently charged with failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis when suspected to have driven while over the limit for drugs, and possession of cannabis.

He was further charged with failing to surrender to custody having been released on bail.

He was convicted following a trial at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 4 and the case was adjourned for sentencing on February 27.

Gomes was sentenced to a 12-month community order, requiring him to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work, and disqualified from driving for 36 months. He was also ordered to pay £775 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Mrs Gillian Keegan learned more about the work of the charity when she visited Mount Noddy on Friday.

RSPCA Sussex Chichester and District branch, Mount Noddy, in Eartham, is self-funded and relies on the generosity of those living in the Post area.

THe MP was particularly interested in learning more about the RSPCA apprenticeships scheme, which is run in conjunction with Chichester college.

THe RSPCA started running apprenticeships in 2017 and has already had excellent take-up among its employees, with 90 currently undertaking study alongside their work.

Laura Swan, apprenticeships development manager at the RSPCA, said: "We are very proud of offering such a diverse range of courses to help our hard-working staff to improve on their skill set from veterinary nurses to digital marketers.

"THe feedback has been really positive and we are pleased to have such a high take-up and to be able to share this with MP Gillian Keegan today."

Mrs Keegan said: "I have really enjoyed learning more about the RSPCA

and meeting some of their talented apprentices working here in West Sussex.

"THe programmes they are studying range from veterinary nursing to digital marketing and equine grooming, giving more young people the opportunity to specialise and apply their new skills in the workplace.

"I also enjoyed meeting the adorable animals in the care of the wonderful staff at Mount Noddy, and I hope they find a loving home soon."

THe centre provides care and assistance to abandoned, abused and neglected cats and dogs.

Ice rink is debated at council - See page five

"THey will have to show they are managing their finances and budgeting for a length of time.

"Funding is limited and will not assist all but for those households who meet the criteria, it will enable them to apply and obtain permanent housing and release temporary accommodation for other homeless families."

Cllr Eileen Lintill was concerned this may mean those who benefited from the funding may jump the queue.

She said: "I do support this but I would just like confirmation that if we help somebody, what this does is enable them to go on the list, but it doesn't give them any preferential treatment once they are on the list.

"I absolutely agree we should help people. It must be horrendous if you get into debt and can't see a way out of it and can't get on the housing list, but on the other hand if I am on the housing list for an awfully ling time and I see somebody that hasn't managed their funds very well being helped out like this and then queue jumping, I think I might be a little bit upset."

Marie Grêlé, housing options manager at the council, confirmed this would not be the case.

She said: "THe scheme doesn't give any additional priority on the housing register at all. " Cllr John O'Connor also supported

the recommendation.

He said: "I support this. I have come across cases in a different context where people are in debt, which was not through their own mismanagement or fault.

"I think it only right, if we are in a position to help these people to get them at least on the list, then I think we should do so."

In January, district councillors agreed to demolish a property in Freeland Close which they bought in 2017, and agreed to replace it with up to 21 flats for short term accommodation.

Peter Sutton, Christians Against Poverty’s local CAP Money course leader, said: "We welcome initiatives

by Chichester District Council to alleviate the burden of debt from local people, especially when they have been struggling to get affordable housing due to debt issues.

"It will depend on the details of the scheme as to how effective this is but the fact that the council is taking steps to help where it can is very important."

` Stabbing charge A RETIRED man from Chichester has been with charged with assisting an offender after a murder happened in Aldwick.

Ian Hemmens, 80, of Bognor Road, Chichester, has been bailed to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on April 9.

Another man, Akeem Adebayo, 23 from London has been remanded in custody after being charged with attempted murder in Aldwick and appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

He will next appear by video link at Portsmouth Crown Court on April 12. He has also been charged with possession with intent to supply cocaine. He has yet to enter a plea.

THe alleged stabbing took place in Marine Park Gardens on Sunday afternoon. THe victim, a 28-yearold Bognor Regis man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his chest, arm and head. His condition was said earlier this week to be stable.

` Suspected rape THREE men from Chichester have appeared in court after being charged with the rape of a teenager on Bognor Regis seafront.

Madalin-Daniel Nitu, 23, Genghiz Iasear, 27, and Ionel-Mizel Ciocan, 24, all farm workers, of Groves Farm, Colworth, appeared in custody at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

THey have been charged with raping the 19-year-old woman in the early hours of last Saturday.

Confusion over Southern Water

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SOUTHERN WATER came under fire at a meeting over a new housing development at Southbourne.

Getting information from them was "like extracting teeth - very painful", members of Chichester District Council’s planning committee were told.

Councillors were considering arrangements for the discharge of foul drainage from 157 homes at THe Orchards, Southbourne.

But they said they were left confused by explanations at the meeting by Southern Water senior project manager George Csatlos.

Councillors said they were bewildered by the jargon, stating it wasn't Mr Csatlos's fault but they were not experts in drainage and felt it needed to be explained more clearly.

THe 157 homes to the north of the A259 in Southbourne are under construction, after full planning permission was granted.

However, the go-ahead was conditional on satisfactory arrangements being made for foul sewage disposal, approved in writing by the local planning authority in consultation with Southern Water.

Despite concern raised by speakers at the meeting, the parish council and committee members about previous storm discharges, design and pipework being almost 90-years old, officers had told councillors they should accept

Southern Water’s plans.

Mr John Child, a Nutbourne resident for the past 37 years, said at the meeting that during his time living there, they had experienced upgrades to the gas supply pipe in the road and new street lighting but no changes had been made to the foul waste pipework and he believed they were still served by the original pipework installed in the 1930s when they were first built.

He said: "What causes us major concern is that on plans submitted to Chichester District Council in 2017, the main foul waste pipe shown outside the entrance to the largest new development (Priors Orchard) was drawn as a new long section of larger diameter pipe, replacing the old pipe.

"Shortly afterwards, this improvement was deleted from the plans and the original pipework shown as unchanged."

Mr Roy Seabrook, a resident of Nutbourne for around 40 years, said: "As a private company, Southern Water's first responsibility in law is to its shareholders. THey hold a total monopoly without the slightest possibility of losing their franchise and with totally inadequate oversight.

“All too often, the district council planners act and write as though Southern Water are the authority and refuse to query or hold them to account.”

Committee chairman, Cllr Bob Hayes said: "As the ward member for Southbourne, I concur with everything the residents have said. Trying to get information out of Southern Water has

Mr Andrew Frost, director of planning and environment at the council, said that there was no other expert to ask for advice.

He said councillors’ role was to "assess and determine what was appropriate to provide infrastructure for this housing development".

He added: "THis isn't necessarily going to address all pre-existing problems in the area, this will no doubt be for other parts of Southern Water to deal with.

"THe question before you is whether or not you can accept, based on what you

have heard and what is in the report, that the scheme installed is appropriate in itself to convey waste water.

"I don't think there is any other source for you to go to. Southern Water are the experts. We have heard sufficiently from Southern Water and there is nobody else to go to in terms of advice."

Cllr Tricia Tull added: "I appreciate everything Mr Frost has said and I know where we have to go with this.

"I just hope for the residents’ sake this doesn't come back to bite us."

Members of the committee voted in favour of permitting the application.

Skating ahead with new plans

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk DESPITE controversy last year, councillors have agreed that an ice skating rink should come back to the city centre for Christmas but the decision will be left to officers and could be made after the elections.

At the district council's overview and scrutiny committee meeting on Tuesday morning, members received a review report for the ice skating event which was held in Priory Park from December 1, 2018, to January 6, 2019.

Committee chairman, Cllr Clare Apel, said she thought the decision should be made after local elections being held in May, which was a formal recommendation and members of the committee agreed.

Although members at the meeting shared some concern over the reinstatement of grass, the majority of comments were positive and in favour of the ice rink returning.

Several councillors raised points, including whether there were any other venues being considered. However, officers stated that due to the Chichester Vision being adopted, the aim was to support the high street, which meant a city centre location was vital.

Concerns were also expressed over the current state of the grass, after Cllr Richard Plowman explained he was an expert in botany and grasses and asked for a full, expert, independent review of the grass.

Officers said that under the planning permission, a condition was in place

about the satisfactory reinstatement of the grass and that Chichester Contract Services were satisfied the grass would be coming back and that it will regain the previous condition prior to the rink but the condition had not been met yet and the deposit is still being held.

THe report stated that car parking tickets sold increased by just under 5,000 users for car parks in the city during December, 2018, when compared to the previous December.

Data showed an increase of 67,480 visits overall, some of which will have been people attending the ice rink, as well as the general entertainment and events within the city. Retailers also reported in a decent sales period over Christmas.

Cllr Pam Dignum said her family had enjoyed their time spent at the ice rink last year. She said: "THe younger members had the most fun they ever had in Chichester. It added an extra excitement that had never been present in Chichester before."

THe report also stated that the preferred site for the ice rink would be Priory Park and the council was looking at installing a three-phase electrical supply so generators would not be required next time.

Cllr Budge added: "I was impressed by the organisation. THe people who were looking after the skaters were doing a good job and the people who ran it were pleasant."

Recommendations from Cllr Andrew Shaxson were agreed by members, for the council to be provided with a thorough breakdown of all costs the council is incurring as a result of the ice rink.

He also said that Priory Park or any other site should be offered at an open market tender commercial rate.

Cllr Norma Graves asked for a report to be presented to the committee regarding the reinstatement of the grass before any deposit was returned to the contractor.

All the recommendations will have to be agreed by council cabinet members.

Speaking exclusively to the Chichester Post after the meeting, a spokesperson from CHiCE said: "We are completely happy with the works completed and advice from our professional on the reinstatement of the grass.

"While the weather hasn’t been kind, the grass is growing and will continue to grow and repair in the coming weeks and the park will be handed back to the council in the same condition as it was handed to us.

"We will continue to work with the district council in the hope to find a mutually beneficial way forward for an ice rink in Chichester, especially as most of the other festive content for the city appears to be falling down, which is such a shame for us all.

"We are open to all options and possibilities at this stage."

On Tuesday, March 5, remains discovered in the wooded area in Walberton, near Arundel, were identified as missing Barnham woman 49-year-old Helen Slaughter.

In School Lane, Stedham, Midhurst, overnight into Monday, March 4, a vehicle was broken into and cash stolen. Serial 1077 04/03.

In THe Leys, Singleton, Chichester, on Wednesday, March 6, police received a report of a shed breakin. A number of garden machinery items were stolen. Serial 0194 6/3.

Also on Wednesday, March 6, police received a report of a break-in to an outbuilding in THe Street, Stedham, Midhurst. A Trek black mountain bike was stolen.

In Elm Grove, Runcton, overnight into THursday, March 6, a vehicle was broken into and tools stolen.

Overnight into THursday, March 7, a Sinnis Street white moped was stolen from Northgate car park, Chichester. Serial 0399 7/3.

In Stane Street, Chichester, overnight into Friday, March 8, a container was broken into. Once the suspect realised they were being filmed on CCTV they left and no items were stolen. Serial 0012 8/3.

Police received a report of a burglary overnight to a public house in Petersfield Road, Midhurst, on Friday, March 8. Money and alcohol was stolen from the premises.

f Parking near Rolls Royce has caused a few issues

Car giant backs county council's plans ROLLS-ROYCE Motor Cars has strongly endorsed West Sussex County Council’s parking management plan for roads around the company’s head office and manufacturing plant at Goodwood.

Rolls-Royce has consistently and publicly voiced concern at the lack of local parking and speed controls, and last month called upon the local authorities for urgent action.

THe management plan, which was presented to residents at a special meeting hosted by Westhampnett Parish Council last week, proposes additional double yellow lines in key locations and permit parking controls to support residents. A new cycle path is proposed and is included in the overall plans.

Chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös said: "We are delighted that the county council has announced consultation for a parking

management plan that will have positive impact on our community and we wholly endorse this initiative.

"However, this does not answer the dangerous issue of speeding on local roads and we again call on our local authorities – Sussex Police, the county council and Chichester District Council – to urgently manage the issue of speeding."

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has said it works hard to be a good neighbour and liaises closely with employees, suppliers, Westhampnett Parish Council, other local authorities and the community.

THe company has invested heavily in its business to support this ethos, building a 500-space car park to minimise the number of employee vehicles parked on local roads, including a dedicated 40-space car park for the local school to ensure child safety.

Not long to go before the city opens its doors to art trail THE 2019 Open Studios Art Trail sees 160 artists exhibiting a wide range of work across 127 venues in and around the city of Chichester during the first two weekends in May. Chichester Open Studios Art Trail is a traditional fixture held throughout the area during the first two weekends in May. It is an unparalleled opportunity for artists to present their artwork in the inspiring context of their working environment, to large numbers of interested and purchasing visitors.

THe widespread artists are divided into the city, downs, harbour, peninsula and Regis trails.

Visitors can explore one trail at a time, or hop around venues as they choose. THis is a chance to enjoy the art and hospitality of talented local artists.

THe Trail Guide, with its maps showing venue locations, directions, and a profile of each artist, helps

visitors to plan their own route. Guides are available from THe Oxmarket and other central locations, from April.

THe Oxmarket preview exhibition runs from Tuesday, April 23, to Sunday, April 28. Each artist has a piece of work in the show; a taster to help visitors chose which venues to visit.

VISITORS and residents are hoping that 2019 will be another exciting year for visitors keen to see the famous Chichester Cathedral peregrine falcons.

Once again, from March until July, visitors can look forward to catching sight of these magnificent birds from the cathedral grounds.

From the cafe, people will be able to watch a live webcam view of the nesting site in the spire.

Since early January, the male and female have been spotted on a number of occasions and it looks like the birds are settling in well.

It is hoped another batch of chicks will be fledged successfully this year.

Peregrines were seen on the tower in the mid 1990s and may well have been visiting for many hundreds of years before.

THey have been very successful nesting at the cathedral and have fledged more than 60 chicks since 2001. THese magnificent birds of prey can grow up to half a metre in length and have a

THey live for 15 to 18 years and are actually the fastest animals in the world, diving at speeds of just under 250 miles an hour to catch their prey. THey are also incredibly agile, and have been observed flying upside down to catch food dropped by a mate.

THis year, the peregrine project will be run jointly by the cathedral, the Sussex Ornithological Society and local wildlife enthusiasts David and Janet Shaw, who have been observing the birds since 2001.

David and Janet can often be found in the evenings during the season watching and photographing the action, and are happy to chat to the public about their observations.

THey are intending to run a series of open days at weekends so visitors will have a chance to observe the peregrines through a telescope, watch the webcam footage, and learn more about the birds and their activities.

THe dates are April 27 and 28, May 4 and 5, May 18 and 19, June 8 and 9 and June 15 and 16 – all weather permitting.

Former homeless man sets up gym project to help others in need in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A FORMER addict and homeless man has created a free gym for those in need after turning his life around.

Tom Mawyer, from Chichester, a former offender, said now he has changed his life, he wants to pull people out of the same situation he was in.

St Pancras Church in the city centre was a place that helped Tom change. He said: "When I was on the streets, I just felt I couldn't get a chance, there was nothing for me to do and nobody I could get trust from.

"People would give me money and they had guilt in their eyes. It was generous but it wasn't the help I needed. I went to the church and found father and mother figures, and that was what I needed."

Tom has worked with a friend, Caroline Taylor, who he met at Grit Gym to set up a gym at St Pancras Hall in Tozer Way, which is free for anybody on benefits, homeless or just in need.

Caroline said: "I met Tom about five years ago at Grit Gym. He was lost and I helped him. We used to go for coffees and he told me he had a vision to help people but he wasn't helping himself.

"After some head space, Tom and I met again and we started up this project. I teach Animal Flow, which was created by Mike Fitch in America. It's a ground-based movement which I've

been doing for around five years and it's changed my life."

THe free gym and open centre offers people exercise, massage and advice and aims to help get people into the community. Tom said he was trying to get to the grassroots of things and not just talk about it, but do it.

Cllr Christopher Spink and Cllr Jane Kilby, from Chichester City Council, are also helping to run breakfast clubs which are free to all, not just the homeless.

St Pancras Church has been running them for three years and other churches in the area for around six months as part of City Heart.

Cllr Spink and Cllr Kilby visit twice a week, on Mondays and THursdays, to help with issues arising as often people don’t always want to go to the council offices.

Cllr Spink said: "Tom is an asset to the church and he and all the volunteers at St Pancras make us feel really welcome.

"We really enjoy the bond we have created and hope to continue this its a absolute pleasure to help when we can."

Tom said: "You have to change the situation of your heart. You can't just give people a house because they will take their problems with them.

"THe church helps the soul and this project helps the mind and the body."

City celebrates building commencing on four Dears St Pancras almshouses

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk BUILDING IS about to commence on four new almshouses in the city centre and the celebrations were held on Saturday morning in St Pancras.

A traditional ceremonial was held for the turning of the first sod - a traditional ceremony that celebrates the first day of construction for a building or other project.

Joining in the ceremony was the Rev Mark Payne, chairman of the Dears trustees and Alderman Bill Craven, Mayor of the corporation of St Pancras and yown crier, Cllr Richard Plowman.

THe Dears Almshouse Charity was set up by Martha Dear in the 19th century and has been the principle charity of the corporation of St Pancras (est 1689) and known as the Wheelbarrow Club which has raised £60,000 towards the project over the years.

THe building on the north side of THe Hornet (no 19) has a foundation stone dated to 1802 and now houses an arcade of smaller shops.

Up to about the 1970s, however, it was the ‘Old Dears’ Almshouses, so named as it provided housing for elderly women

living on slender means.

At the ceremony, Cllr Plowman said: "I had been mayor of the corporation of St Pancras and a trustee of the Dears Almshouse Charity for three years and determined to see the delivery of four new, much needed, high-quality almshouses so today’s ceremony was a very poignant moment as it hasn’t been an easy journey.

"THe project is the first of the community-led development initiatives in Chichester to come to fruition and leads the way for communities to build their own houses to meet their own needs."

Prior to the start of the 19th century, there had been six earlier almshouses on the site. THese had become severely dilapidated to the extent they could no longer be used.

However, local philanthropist Martha Dear left a legacy of £1,000 to fund them again.

According to the Charity Commissioners' report of 1836, the almshouses had already been rebuilt by voluntary subscription on the site of the six earlier almshouses that had ceased to be used.

THe day-to-day running of the charity was administered by St Pancras Parish

Council and was recorded in the churchwardens' and vestry books.

In the early 20th century, it was apparent the almshouse inmates were in need.

In November, 1905, it was resolved that a collection be made by the mayor and corporation of St Pancras.

THe current project is also the first one to be supported by the community-led development initiative from central government and administered by Chichester District Council. THe scheme helps and contributes to project costs such as architects' fees.

Local architect, Richard Meynell has designed the four almshouses to a high standard and they are fit for life with plenty of space for mobility scooters, wheelchairs and wet room bathrooms in a lovely courtyard and safe setting.

THey will be built by local firm Nutbourne Construction and building work is expected to be completed by the autumn.

` Reserved matters APPROVAL was given on a planning application for reserved matters at a site in Chidham.

At the Chichester District Council planning meeting held on Wednesday morning, councillors approved the approval for the remaining reserved matters of appearance, landscaping, layout and scale.

Outline permission for the redevelopment for the Greenacres Nursery site in Main Road, Chidham for ten dwellings was granted in April 2018.

THe submitted plans detailed a low density development comprising a mix of detached and terraced 2, 3 and 4 bedroom two-storey homes.

THree of the dwellings would comprise affordable housing in the form of a terrace of 2 bedroom immediate-tenure units.

THe houses would face onto a central shared-surface access road, with rear gardens backing onto the site's boundaries.

A small area of open space would be provided towards the northeast corner of the site. Existing boundary tree screening would be retained and strengthened with additional planting.

THe northwest corner of the site is adjoined by a detached dwelling - Greenacres - which is also in the applicant ownership and which shares the site's vehicular access onto the A259. Paddocks flank the site's southern, eastern and western boundaries.

Members of the committee approved the reserved matters and only queried access to the paddock of land which would otherwise be landlocked.

Donna's past could help others

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A CHICHESTER dancer involved in a terrible car accident has created a series of workshops focused on cultivating resilience to stress.

Donna Fallowes, a professional dancer, was aged 19 when she was involved in a freak road traffic accident and suffered an open fracture of her left leg.

She was in hospital for a long time and spent some months in a wheelchair and a year on crutches.

Donna hoped her bones would heal naturally. One did but the other didn’t and she eventually had to have an operation for a metal plate and pins to be inserted into her leg.

She said: "Out of adversity sometimes great things can be birthed, and my story is an example of that I suppose.

"I rose up from the ashes of my experience and founded an inclusive arts organisation called Emerge.

"I had gained an empathy and understanding of what it feels like to be wheelchair-bound, seen as disabled, and I had a strong desire to change people's perceptions about disability.

"I wanted to provide a platform through the arts where abilities and not limitations could be recognised, and to offer an inclusive learning environment."

Donna has been the creative director of Emerge for over 18 years and there came a time when she said she needed to just ‘emerge’ again herself.

"What called me was the world-renowned expressive arts approach called the Tamalpa Life/ Art process, incorporating dance, drawing, creative writing embodied

mindfulness and dialogue."

THe Tamalpa Institute was founded 1978 by Daria and Anna Halprin. Donna said she saw value in how it could support her work with communities as we face the challenge of mental health issues, loneliness and isolation.

Anna Halprin is a famous performance artist and creator of dance for social change, and at 97, she is still teaching and creating.

"THe first time I saw Anna (she was 94) she literally took my breath away, as I

watched her walk down the 50 something steps from her house in the woods above to meet us on the dance deck surrounding the Californian redwood trees below.

"I’m saddened by the loneliness people are experiencing in our society and my work aims to connect people with their community. I believe that we didn’t get born to just survive I’m interested in supporting people and societies to thrive together."

Donna is holding Emerge2LifeUK workshops - Cultivating Resilience to

Stress in 21st Century on March 23, 24, and 30 in East Wittering.

"I’d like people to not just experience a workshop but to take away some tools to be able to use on a daily basis to help them navigate life’s twists and turns with greater ease."

Don't be idle about the city's air quality CAMPAIGNERS took to the streets on Monday and Wednesday this week to stand up for clean air.

THe aim of the events was to encourage motorists to turn off their engines when waiting in queues.

Whyke Road in Chichester suffers from queuing traffic because of the railway barriers and resident, Hilary Nation, asked THe Whyke Residents Association and city councillor Sarah Sharp for assistance.

THe campaign involved handing out leaflets to drivers about how to improve air quality and to politely ask them to turn off their engines and was supported by the county council which added its logo to the flier to support to the initiative.

Cllr Sharp said: "Idling wastes fuel and costs money. Research has shown that too much idling can even damage your vehicle.

"We even found out that air quality inside a car can be much worse than air quality outside the vehicle, so switching off your engine can improve your passengers’ health too.

"It is really important for passengers’ and other road-users’ health that we keep idling to a limit. By switching off your engine, we can reduce the health risks linked with toxic air like heart disease, lung cancer and asthma. THe vast majority of drivers kindly switched off their engines which was brilliant.

"We were pleased that most people were friendly and happy to take the leaflet. It is an important message and we think a positive one – as we know that we can all make a difference and improve our air quality."

THe group encouraged residents to volunteer to help at future events.

Following 18,000 votes from the public, three finalists from each award category will be invited to the awards banquet at the Amex Stadium, Falmer, on May 15.

Goodwood Home Farm is up for Sussex food producer of the year, and farmer, butcher, chef will be in the running for Sussex eating experience of the year.

THe Goodwood restaurant is the final stage of a unique process dedicated to producing the finest quality organic meat, as well as achieving the

very best yield from the livestock at Goodwood Home Farm.

Alongside the award-winning meat, Goodwood Home Farm also produces 21,000 litres of milk a week, used to make three cheeses (Charlton Cheddar, Molecomb Blue and Levin Down). Photo winner CHICHESTER Harbour Conservancy has announced the winner of its first social media photo competition.

Wendy Chalk was selected from over 150 entries and awarded a photography masterclass and pride of place on the 2019 edition of the Conservancy's annual magazine - Harbour News.

THe competition, which ran from August 1 to September 30 last year, invited those who visited the harbour to share their photos of people, landscapes, scenery or wildlife whatever they felt best showcased all the harbour has to offer.

It was judged in four main categories, which reflected different aspects of the harbour and its uses: wildlife, habitat,

economy and recreation.

Maria Court, shared services manager, said: "Chichester Harbour offers some extraordinary opportunities for beautiful photography, and many visitors enjoy capturing the scenery, wildlife and goings on with their phones and cameras.

"It's been wonderful to see how those visiting the harbour view this unique area, and the long, hot summer offered lots of occasions to be out and about all day long.

"We were very impressed with Wendy's entry, which captured the beautiful dunes at East Head. THe image was perfectly framed with great depth of field, clarity and composition."

A FORMER Chichester College student will represent the UK at one of the world’s most important and prestigious skills competitions.

Owen Aldous will travel to Russia in August with Team UK for the WorldSkills 2019 Finals.

He will be competing in the cabinet making category, having excelled in recent national competitions in the field and impressed at last week’s final selection.

Owen said: "I’m really excited about it – I had no idea I would be chosen as it’s been really close throughout training.

"We’ve all worked really hard to get here. THe training is intense, and it is tough both physically and mentally as you try to improve and get better.

"It takes a lot of work and countless hours, but worth it! It’s a good feeling to know I’m going to be representing my country."

Owen joins more than 30 of the UK’s best and brightest young skilled apprentices and students from across a range of industries, including engineering, construction, hospitality and IT, who have been chosen to represent all four nations in Team UK after a competitive two-year selection process.

He follows in the footsteps of a number of Chichester College students, with both Edward Harringman and George Callow – now Owen’s manager at Callow & Co – both winning gold for the UK at WorldSkills in 2015 and 2013 respectively.

Under the guidance of Christian Notley MBE, UK Training Manager for cabinet making and deputy head of learning for furniture at Chichester College, Owen has been training alongside

two other cabinet makers - including Tom Pennicott, another former Chichester student.

THe WorldSkills Finals will take place in Kazan, Russia, from August 22 to 27.

More than 60 countries are sending elite teams to the Tatarstan capital - 800 km east of Moscow - to do battle and go for bronze, silver and gold in 56 different skills disciplines.

THe event, dubbed the ‘Skills Olympics’, will be shown live on TV and streamed around the world.

At the last WorldSkills finals (2017) in Abu Dhabi, Team UK finished in 10th position and is hoping to replicate or better the result.

` Anti-Semitism WEST Sussex County Council has adopted an internationally recognised definition of anti-Semitism into its own equality policy.

Members of the standards committee voted unanimously to include the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition after being contacted by the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC).

In his letter, Simon Johnson, chief executive of the JLC, said: "Incidents of anti-Semitism are unfortunately on the rise across the UK and, as an umbrella body for Jewish communal institutions, we believe that first step in combating this evil is to adequately define it, which is why we are asking local authorities to adopt the definition into their own policies."

THere was no doubt among the committee about the need to adopt the definition, with chairman, Cllr Lionel Barnard, stating: "We should do it, we have to do it, and we should do it now." Cllr Bob Smytherman added: "I’m surprised we haven’t already done it."

When Cllr Amanda Jupp suggested the policy should be aimed at opposing all forms of discrimination as well as antiSemitism, Diane Henshaw, principal solicitor, assured her that this was already the case.

Ms Henshaw said: "At the moment we have anti-discrimination policy within our equality policy.

"THe proposal is we will simply have a line in there to say as part of that we endorse the definition from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance."

Westhampnett air quality is being monitored by city's district council AIR QUALITY at Westhampnett Road will be monitored by Chichester District Council, now that an air quality monitoring station has been installed in the area, prompted by residents’ feedback.

THe station monitors the level of nitrogen dioxide pollution to ensure that national air quality standards are met. THese are a set of standards local authorities must aim to meet in order to protect people’s health and the environment.

If an area is found to be exceeding the standards, an air quality management area must be declared. THis then requires the local authority to produce an air quality action plan which lists the measures to be taken to reduce

air pollution in order to meet the requirements of the standards.

“Clean air and low levels of pollution are a key priority for the council, and installing a new air quality monitoring station is just one of the steps we are taking to protect our district’s environment,” said Cllr John Connor, cabinet member for the environment at the district council.

“To ensure we can get an accurate picture, we will need to monitor for a number of years. THis is because a number of factors can affect the readings taken at the station, for example, wind direction and wind speed.

“After this, we will review the data and if needed, put into action any measures necessary.”

Phone thief caught

A COUPLE who were subjected to daylight robbery are appealing to find the woman who recovered their items.

Niamh and John Allen, from Cocking, made a trip to Chichester city centre on Friday, only to become victims of a terrible crime.

Parking outside Cubitt & West in a disabled bay in West Street, the couple had visited the city centre to pick up a prescription and run a few errands. Mr Allen got out the car and opened the

boot to remove his wife's wheelchair.

As he was assembling the wheelchair,he placed his wallet and mobile phone on the floor of the boot and began to put the chair together.

THe next minute Mr Allen looked up and noticed that a man was sprinting away from them and his phone and wallet were gone.

He said: "I thought, 'well that's it, our day is over, we might as well pack up and go home now' because I had no wallet.

"A few minutes later, a lady came towards us, out of breath and said she had managed to chase after the thief and recovered my phone and wallet.

"We were absolutely amazed that she had done this and managed to catch him.

"It's extremely publicly spirited of her and very brave. I'm not sure many people would want to run after someone and tackle them for something stolen."

Mr and Mrs Allen said they were so busy caught up in the shock that someone had managed to track down the thief and recovered their items that they did not have a chance to get the woman's name or thank her.

THey are therefore asking the woman to get in touch by calling Mrs Allen on 07917 274 266 so they can make an appropriate gesture of thanks to her.

District council keeps same parking charges

Group meet for much loved path FRIENDS OF Centurion Way were once again stationed on the path on Saturday afternoon, canvassing support for their campaign to preserve and enhance the community asset.

Ian Bartle, chairman of Friends of Centurion Way, sad: "It forms such a vital link between the city and the South Downs said one passer-by.

"As usual, those using the path ranged from young families teaching their children how to ride a bike, to people on mobility scooters.

"THere were cyclists experiencing the freedom of biking in a safe environment and others crossing the railway bridge to and from the shops.

"Many were already supporters of the campaign but several new names

"When our parking forum reviews the charges, it considers them very carefully to ensure value for money and also to ensure turnover of spaces in the car parks where they are most in demand.

"Over the last three years, we have been working extremely hard to improve our parking facilities and payment options.

We will also be shortly introducing an additional blue badge bay at Florence Road car park in Chichester."

Dan Snow makes history exciting An Evening with the History Guy Thursday, March 21, 7.30pm HISTORICAL facts about the area around Worthing, plus a 20-minute question and answer session, will feature in a talk with digital imagery by television historian Dan Snow.

THe son of legendary broadcaster Peter Snow and nephew of Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow, Dan is a great great grandson of British prime minister David Lloyd George.

Attributing his love of history to his childhood, when he recalls spending weekends being taken to castles, battlefields,

country houses and churches, Dan went on to study history at Oxford University.

When Dan left Oxford, he started presenting history programmes with his father and their series Battlefield Britain went on to win a BAFTA. Over the years, Dan has made programmes on a number of historical topics and has presented shows such as Armada, Grand Canyon and Vikings.

Dan runs his own online TV channel History Hit TV and has a regular ‘history’ slot on THe One Show, when he will share memorable anecdotes from his career as a historian and broadcaster.

A NEW website is celebrating the rich and varied music of the South Downs.

THe site - www.southdownsmusic.com brings together a range of songs, tunes and other resources that highlight the fantastic tapestry of musical heritage which comes from the area of the national park, across all of Sussex and into Hampshire.

THe project has come to fruition after Roger Nash, from the Bognor Regisbased Southdowns Folk Festival, and Alison Hildyard, from BigIAm, of Hove, worked closely with the South Downs National Park Authority, which provided funding through its Sustainable Communities Fund.

THe site's content of South Downs music is accessible for everyone but will be especially useful to schools, choirs, community groups and other organisations whose members want to learn and

perform musical material from it. THe site is designed to be as user-friendly and interactive as possible so that new resources can be easily uploaded and existing material downloaded.

Putting together the website has been a labour of love for its creators and special thanks must go to Alison from Hove-based BiGiAM, who has co-ordinated the project, as well as Emily Longhurst and other members of the South Downs Folk Singers whose help and research has been invaluable.

Students help Aldingbourne artists with show Pollen-Nation ArtOne, Bishop Otter Campus, Chichester University PO19 6PE Friday, March 22, 1-4pm TWO students from the University of Chichester, Megan Gray and Jessica Head, who have been working with artists at Aldingbourne Country Centre, have helped them mount an exhibition at the university's Bishop Otter campus.

Called Pollen-Nation, it is part of the pair's

project with centre users, focusing on bees and where they find their pollen.

THe studio at Aldingbourne allows artists with learning difficulties to express themselves and learn new skills in a creative and friendly environment. THe exhibition will showcase their talents and enable them to share their artwork with families, friends and members of the public.

THe centre's artists will also be showcasing their entry for the Jim Green Challenge, which Megan and Jessica helped them to develop.

THis will be displayed alongside the exhibition including photo documentation of the making.

All of the works will be on sale, all work sold at the exhibition will contribute to the expansion of the creative arts studio at Aldingbourne and to allow the artists to continue to develop.

Champion maker of replica furniture recognised Just Champion Until April 26, 10.30am CHAMPION by name and by nature, the work of the former carpenter at the Weald and Downland Living Museum, Roger Champion, is being celebrated at the outdoor museum at Singleton.

Roger worked at the museum since its early days in the 1970s and, although officially retired, still supports it when he can. Over 40 years, he created 247 pieces of furniture which help interpret the social history of the houses and buildings - many

of which he also worked on when they were rebuilt on the site.

THe exhibition is a chance to see selected items together and find out a little more about the research behind then, put in a way that only Roger can, as well as images of the work in progress.

Museum director Simon Wardell is delighted to see Roger’s inspirational and hard work exhibited in the gallery.

He said: "THe furniture Roger has created for the museum has turned our collection of houses and buildings into authentic living spaces of the past”.

Roger will be in the museum gallery to give ten-minute talks at 2pm on March 20, April 4 and April 22. Entry to the talks and the exhibition is included in usual museum entry fees.

‘Just Champion’: Replica furniture made for the museum is in the Michael Burton Gallery within the Longport Farmhouse and is open until April 26. Until March 31, the museum is open 10.30am to 4.30pm daily, then, for summer time, it closes at 6pm.

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of 15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

Community News & Views THE CROWN Community Pub Hub Steering Group, which is working on preserving Muchos Nachos at the Crown for community use, has announced the beginning of a new partnership with the University of Chichester.

To celebrate the launch of a new degree route in cabaret performance, the University of Chichester music department is staging an event showcasing the diverse talents of students.

With popular compositions from the world of music theatre, folk song and pop, this will be an opportunity for the public to engage with staff and students from one of the UK's largest music departments.

William Allenby, vocal tutor at the university, said: "Come and support this exciting event, celebrating the launch of the UK's first degree pathway in cabaret performance."

THe taster event takes place on Wednesday, March 27, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, in Muchos Nachos at the Crown, Whyke Road, Chichester.

Sarah Sharp, member of the steering group of the Crown Community Pub Hub, said: "We are delighted to see the pub hosting this event. THere is a strong tradition of music at the pub, as the Chichester City Band (formerly Chichester Brass Band South Ward) was founded in the Crown in 1898 and used the upstairs as their bandroom.

"So it feels like we are following a grand musical tradition by having this performance in the pub. We have for many months enjoyed regular performances from the Backroom Group which features young performers linked to the Chichester Music Academy, and this is now going to be complemented by the university's amazing new course. I am looking forward to this immensely."

A COUPLE who met at a hospice fundraising event are encouraging other people to sign up and take part.

After Debbie Spreckley’s father and David Johnson’s wife both died under the care of St Wilfrid's Hospice, they each decided they wanted to give something back, so signed up for the Moonlight Walk in 2012.

Debbie was joined by her sister, Louise, and David teamed up with old family friend, Elaine. After meeting at the beginning of the walk and then again at the canal, Debbie and David continued chatting and in no time, had left Louise and Elaine trailing behind. At the end of the walk they said their goodbyes, but when Debbie saw the photos in the paper the following week, she decided to get in touch with David again and they arranged to meet for dinner.

After a romantic proposal in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight – a place that David knew was very special to Debbie and her Father, they married on March 29, 2014 in Havant.

Debbie Spreckley said: "I think it’s real fate, to lose someone and to find happiness from it. It was meant to be - someone was obviously looking down on us that night."

THey are both such passionate supporters of the hospice that they finished off their wedding day by attending the Lavant Support Group Barn Dance in the evening, and now they both regularly volunteer for St Wilfrid’s - Debbie on the ward and David as a driver.

"It’s fantastic to be able to give something back to the hospice," said David.

"I felt a real peacefulness when my late wife was here and I wanted to be part of the team, helping families, making their journey easier, because I’d been through it, too."

Over 11 years St Wilfrid Hospices’ amazing supporters have made Moonlight Walk truly special and helped raise vital funds.

WITH INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day held on Friday, First Steps Childcare, based at Chichester College, Brinsbury and Bersted, were boldly celebrating their new, male, nursery manager at their Bersted nursery.

Ashley Hopkins, who obtained his childcare qualifications from Crawley College (in partnership with Chichester College), brings with him a wealth of experience in the childcare sector and is passionate about making a positive impact in his new setting.

Ashley said: "Since starting at First Steps, I’ve already started to feel like part of a community - building relationships with the children and families but also colleagues and other professionals in the sector.

Being a nursery manager is obviously a very important role but being a male within Early Years is relatively rare so to be appointed as manager fills me with pride.

"I love my job; no two days are the same, one morning I will be out in

the garden engaged in role play while in the afternoon I could be showing around prospective families.

"I attend our wonderful ‘Forest School’ with our preschoolage children weekly, allowing me to share in the love for the outdoors with them, using the natural environment as a fantastic learning experience.

"I’ve received lovely feedback from parents over the years but it’s true that people have mentioned to me what a shame it is that there is such a lack of males within the early year’s sector.

THis is what makes me proud to be doing what I do, 13 years working in early years and I've never looked back."

Ashley is not the only male that First Steps Childcare can celebrate. In fact, the group are now lucky enough to proudly boast one male employee at each of their three nursery settings. Connor Bowley, childcare assistant at the Brinsbury nursery and Ben Taylor, childcare apprentice, completes the team at First Steps Chichester.

FOR THE last ten years, the Rotary Club of Chichester Harbour has organised a series of successful annual charity cycle rides from Chichester to its twinned city of Chartres, which in total have raised in excess of £100,000 for local charities.

THis year, the club is planning something slightly different and a little closer to home, but they hope that this new event will prove to be equally appealing and certainly no less challenging for enthusiastic cyclists who want to help raise money for a worthwhile cause.

THis year, during the weekend of September 7-8, participants will be cycling to and around the Isle of Wight, a location that is practically on our doorstep, but one that many local people have possibly never visited, let alone contemplated cycling around in the course of a weekend.

Including cycling from Chichester to Portsmouth on the outward and return journeys, and circumnavigating the island, the total distance cycled will be around 120 miles. THe final route has still to be finalised, but it will follow much of the picturesque coastline, offering magnificent views, and an undulating and sometimes hilly route that should present most cyclists with a unique, yet attainable challenge.

THe cost of the trip is £150 per person, which includes outward/return FastCat crossings as a foot passenger with a bicycle (pedal or electric), and dinner, bed and breakfast. THe cost includes transportation of an overnight bag in a hired van, and basic backup and support during the event.

As is always the case for RCCH’s charity cycle events, all money raised goes to local charities, and this year, Stonepillow has been chosen as the main beneficiary, which is particularly fitting as 2019 is the charity’s 30th anniversary. Participants will be asked to fundraise a minimum of £250 each (or £400 per couple/parent and child).

Stonepillow offers shelter, information and support to empower homeless and vulnerable people to make positive changes in their lives, and provides a range of services in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, including day centres, hostels, a recovery service, supported housing and charity shops. THe charity gives people the opportunity to learn new skills and access education, training and employment.

DABBERS were at the ready on Wednesday night last week, as residents enjoyed a charity bingo night.

THe event was hosted by children's TV star Dave Benson Phillips at THe Duke & Rye pub, in West Street.

THe event was put on by home care provider Caremark and raised £240 for Canine Partners - a Midhurst charity that trains assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities.

CHICHESTER Camera Club's spring photographic exhibition will be held at the end of the month at Tangmere Village Hall.

THe two-day event, on March 30 and 31, will showcase work by new and aspiring photographers with free admission to see the work.

Included in the exhibition are the remarkable film noir images of Brian Muir. THey hint of mystery and intrigue. Who is the woman hurrying through shadows, and why is the image named 'Bordeaux'?

George Sayer showcases his work of a quiet England, the calmness of the canal harbour in Chichester at dawn and the glorious colours and shapes of Goodwood at sunset, pictured above.

Mike Hancock’s insightful portraits are further from home, and, as he comments, Myanmar has not changed too much, yet despite its political problems.

France is the setting for Rob Campling’s study in form and shadow of a chateau in the early evening.

THe taster ends with two collages form last year, by Hilary Featherstone and Kim Tattersall respectively – and Kim also used her smart phone to capture some of the feel of last year's exhibition.

f View of Charabanc owned by Worthing Motor Services with passengers circa1890 – 1910 THE SOUTHDOWN Motor Services Ltd was well-known for its distinctive green and cream colour scheme for their popular buses and coaches that carried passengers along the South Coast and was iconic among its residents.

THe company aimed to provide passengers with a more luxurious service than had previously been available, with better signage, roomier seating and improved reliability.

A series of takeovers meant the service ended up with a geographical remit that spread from Portsmouth to Hastings and all the way up to London. In the first of this twopart article, we will be looking at the founding of the company.

It was formed in 1915 as a result of a merger between a number of smaller, local companies consisting of the Brighton Hove and Preston United Omnibus Co (formed 1884), Worthing Motor Services Ltd of 1909 (itself successor of the Sussex Motor Road Car Co Ltd of 1904), and the London and South Coast Haulage Co Ltd (of 1912).

At the outbreak of the First World War there was an influx of passengers on the move and this put a strain on the services that individual companies offered due to the restrictions that had been imposed on them by the government.

In 1904, military authorities had proposed the need for a 900-strong fleet of lorries to transport the army. Rather than paying the high cost of maintaining such a large fleet they instead offered a reduced rate to transport companies to build lorries and passenger-chassis to certain specifications, for example, with high ground clearance and heavy duty towing hooks. In 1914, the

Army Service Corps began to take buses from motor companies.

THey entered the war with 950 lorries and ended the war with 33,500. In an effort to save the Brighton Hove and Preston United Omnibus Co, Worthing Motor Services Ltd and the London and South Coast Haulage Co Ltd, it was decided to amalgamate them.

THere were a number of key players in this merger, most notably Alfred Douglas Mackenzie (1870-1944) and Alfred Cannon (1883-1952). Mackenzie had started life as a transport enthusiast and train spotter which seems to have developed into an appreciation for the management of motor companies, giving him the impetus to start an efficient and economic bus company.

He was an apprentice to a firm of marine engineers in Sunderland, and in 1901 joined Allen’s of Cowley in Oxford, where he managed a fleet of 80 steam-powered vehicles including lorries, threshing and ploughing engines, and steam rollers. In 1905, Mackenzie became a consultant engineer and started managing buses in 1907 when he was employed by the Isle of White Express Motor Syndicate Ltd. In April of that year, he became general manager of the Sussex Motor Road Car Co Ltd, which became Worthing Motor Services Ltd, one of the three founding companies of Southdown Motor Services, at the creation of which in 1915 he became traffic manager.

Alfred Cannon had worked with Mackenzie when he was a consultant engineer having apprenticed with Great Western Railway works in Wolverhampton. Mackenzie brought him on board to become general manager of the newly-founded Southdown Motor

French was involved with the British Electric Traction Co Ltd, which ran tramways in Britain, and as a result William Wreathall and Sidney Garcke joined to represent British Electric Traction Co Ltd. THe final members of the board were Alderman John J. Clark and Sir John

Bradford, of the Brighton Hove and Preston United Omnibus Co. Mackenize and Cannon managed to raise £51,250 initial capital and the company inherited a number of buildings and garages from their former institutions, including property in Worthing, Brighton, Storrington, Newhaven and Seaford.

Blues chop Chobham down to size PostSport to cruise into a week off on a high CHICHESTER RFC have time to rest and reflect on a morale-boosting victory over relegation-threatened Chobham.

THe Blues head into a weekend off on the back of a convincing 39-22 victory over the second bottom side in front of a decent home crowd at Oaklands Park.

THe bonus point win gave Chi a five point tally and lifts them up to ninth in the 14 team London South One. With all of the bottom three losing, it also means that Blues have now put a bit of breathing space between them and the drop zone.

With just four matches of the season to play, Chi should be confident that the nine point gap is enough to guarantee another season at this level.

A trip to bottom side Hove next weekend (March 23) awaits Blues next and, after putting a series of tries past Chobham, they will be firm favourites to return along the A27 with the win.

In Hampshire Premier, Bognor - who also have a week off - kept up the pressure on the top two with a bonus point victory over Fareham Heathens.

THe Purple and Greens have turned Hampshire Avenue into a fortress this season and kept up their fine home form with a convincing win over their coastal visitors.

Darren Bidwell opened the scoring for Bognor before prop Tom James bowled over the whitewash to make it 14-0 at the break.

Fellow prop Chris Webb rounded off a fine all-round performance to charge through for a third try. THen it was over to winger Paddy Burnett to wrap up the bonus point.

Joshua Riggall and Webb rounded off the scoring to seal a comfortable win for Bognor.

Seafront 10k is a breeze for TZ team BOGNOR Tone Zone's Jack Penfold kept the Bognor Tone Zone flag flying high as he tamed breezy conditions to land a top ten finish in the West Worthing 10k.

With strong winds blowing around the UK this weekend there was very little chance of personal bests being set.

But a very impressive turnout of 15 club members completed the seafront West Worthing 10k, which saw the second half run head first into strong gusts.

First to finish and seventh overall was Penfold in 40 minutes 9 seconds.

Daryl Fairbrother ran a strong race to finish under 45 minutes. Buddies Carl Bryant and Andy Miles finished in 51 minutes, just ahead of Natalie Tribe in 53.29 and Andrew Medlock in 56.35, with Zoe Hemes just sneaking under the hour mark with a time of 59.22.

THen came a flurry of blue and orange vests with Vicky Cooper, Sarah Spurr, Debi Haddleton, Catriona Power and Michelle Lloyd all finishing under 1 hour 5 minutes.

Rebecca Holden, Lea Hodgkins and Juliette Garrett all ran fine races against the strong wind to finish in 1.05.28, 1.06 and 1.06.57.

Despite the conditions, there was one PB for the weekend which came the way of Leigh Paige, who ran a personal best of 2.18 at the Surrey Half Marathon.

Joan Wooley was competing in another marathon this weekend, the Larmer Tree Marathon in Salisbury. She finished the tough hilly marathon in 7 hours 33 minutes.

Over in Cambridge were running duo Derek and Grace Natoli. Derek ran the half in 2.06 while Grace took on the marathon challenge and finished just under the 5 hour mark.

--THe second leg of the Chichester Corporate Challenge saw hundreds of runners take to the streets of the city centre on Wednesday evening.

More than 500 people of all ages took part in a series of races around the 700 metre lap.

SHORT MAT BOWLS: Infinity's short mat bowls season goes from strength to strength as the Boxgrove-based club keep on racking up the victories.

Recent weeks has seen the cohort of players head to England Short Mat Bowls Association County games and National qualifiers.

THis weekend saw five players take part in the Sussex County Singles Championships.

Defending champion Jack Rollings made it back-to-back wins, beating Southbourne's Anthony Bull in the final.

Chris Page also lifted silverware, taking the Vase competition.

On Sunday, Infinity returned to the league, travelling to THe Martlets. In very close games on both mats Infinity came away from Bury with four points.

A little further away from home, Infinity player Robin Armstrong has teamed up with Kent-based player THomas Coles at the European Open Pairs in Belgium.

THe duo performed well, winning six of their seven group matches to make it through to the knockout stages.

THe last 32 match pitched them against the Norwegian pair of Ronald Anderson and Freddy Forlan

Job Dunn for City as Lancing win sends Chi ten points clear

Chi urged to stop the rot CHICHESTER City Ladies are being urged to snap a three game losing streak and keep their fading title hopes on track.

Aaron Smith's side have defied the odds this season, climbing to the top of the FA Women's Southern Premier in just their second season at this level.

But recent weeks has seen City fall off the pace with last weekend's 3-1 defeat to midtable Loughborough Foxes the third in a row for City.

In comparison leaders Coventry United along with third-place Cardiff and Oxford United have all won their last five in a row.

It means with six matches of the campaign to go, City need to return to winning ways if they are to hold on to the coat tails of other sides around them.

Smith's side have the perfect opportunity of getting back on track on Sunday when they head to C&K Basildon (2pm).

THe Essex side have not won a league match all season, with a 4-2 defeat at Oaklands Park among 15 losses this campaign.

Despite their opponents' poor form, Chi will need to cut

out the errors which cost them dear in the 3-1 loss to the Foxes.

Jess Lewry opened the scoring, poking home after good work down the flank from Nadine Bazan.

But the Foxes hit back and took the advantage at half-time as Rebecca Knight headed home a corner and Chloe Young scored from the penalty spot.

Chances came for both sides after the break but it was Laura Steele who put the game to bed, her 25-yard shot powering in off the post.

Chi threw everything into the final 10 minutes including the kitchen sink and chances to try and get a point from the match came.

But Tash Stephens was denied by a defender while the rebound found Lewry, whose effort was parried wide by visiting keeper.

If there is a positive for Chi in recent weeks it's that four of their players have been selected for county honours.

Lewry, Jess Burke, Sarah Phelps and Sarah Tubby are in the Sussex FA representative squad to play Middlesex on Wednesday in the Southern Counties Cup Competition Final.

FOUR more wins should do it for tabletopping Chichester City as they look to wrap up the SCFL Premier crown sooner rather than later.

THe Oaklands Park side host relegationthreatened Little Common tomorrow (3pm) sitting ten points clear at the top of the table with just seven matches to go.

THe gap was extended last weekend after a 1-0 win at Lancing.

Canadian import Emmett Dunn got the winner for Miles Rutherford and Graham Gee's side in a match which a much-changed Chi dominated from start to finish.

THe youngster timed his run from midfield to perfection to slot home a Josh Clack cross and seal all three points for Chi. THe win for the league leaders extends their unbeaten league run to 17 games, with defeat last coming back in November.

Horsham YMCA, who notched a 4-1 victory at home to Arundel, replaced Newhaven in second spot with the Dockers one point behind YM in third.

But City head into the final six weeks of the season knowing that promotion to step four remains firmly in their own hands.

Pagham chief backs bosses

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea is backing his managers to get it right as the Lions look to recover from their worst run of results in recent memory.

Just a few months ago the Nyetimber Lane side were competing for one of the two promotion spots at the top of the SCFL Premier.

But a mixture of injuries, suspensions and players departing for pastures new have seen Pagham slide down to tenth.

Despite their best efforts, joint managers Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen have

struggled to pick their side up, culminating in a 5-0 loss to Eastbourne Town a fortnight ago and a 4-0 loss last weekend at Hassocks.

With a trip to Eastbourne-based Langney Wanderers tomorrow, Shea is backing the duo to get things right.

Shea said: "I am absolutely backing them. It's not been great to watch, they know that and they know what we're looking for next season.

"But we're working hard to improve the side and we will continue to do that. THey are still managers and that’s what they will continue to do."

It is the 4-0 loss at struggling Hassocks which will be of real concern to Pagham fans.

Earlier in the season, the Lions beat the Robins 5-2 in front of their home crowd.

But four months on, Pagham looked unlikely to reach such heights and stumbled to a disappointing away defeat.

Shea said: "We just have to try to regroup and try and win as many points as we can between now and the end of the season.

"It's not been a great three months, probably the worst three months since I have been chairman.

"But you take the good with the bad, players will come and go from Pagham FC, and at the end of the day we have to focus on the fact that we are in the county league and have had good times in last three years.

"Now is the time for us to roll our sleeves up and get it right."

In SCFL Division One, tenth-place Sidlesham head to Hailsham Town tomorrow (3pm) looking to bounce back after a disappointing 1-0 loss at Seaford last time out.

Meanwhile, Bosham will be looking to follow up a fine 1-0 win over fourthplaced Rottingdean Village when they head to Cowfold (2pm).

A solitary Alex Barnes strike just before the break was enough to seal all three points for the Walton Lane side. Robins have now won three of their last four but have just two matches remaining this season.

Pearce revels in the Blues' purple patch SELSEY'S search for a top four finish continues as the Blues' emphasis on youth looks to paying dividends for all at the Bunn Leisure Stadium.

Daren Pearce was given clear instructions when he took up the reins at High Street support emerging talent and improve on last year's mid-table finish.

With just four games of the season to play, it looks as though he has succeeded on both fronts.

In just a few months the former Sidlesham boss has moulded together an excellent young side which is making great strides in the SCFL Division One. Last weekend's 3-0 victory at home to Mile Oak was just the latest in an excellent run

which stretches back to the start of the year.

THose three points keep Selsey in fifth, just one point behind AFC Varndeanians in fourth.

It also means Blues have lost just once in 12 matches in the league, a run which has seen them put clear water between them and the chasing pack.

Results like last weekend have helped them close the gap, with Lindon Miller, Joe Bennett and Callum Dowdell all scoring in what turned out to be a comfortable victory.

But they will have to wait a fortnight before returning to action, with their next match coming on March 23 at struggling Midhurst & Easebourne. However, Pearce will urge against complacency, reminding his charges they lost the reverse fixture.

Injuries continue to put paid to Bognor's fading playoff hopes Next Game

ENFIELD TOWN (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has hit back at fans who believe the management could be doing more to revive the club's fading playoff hopes.

THe injury-ravaged Rocks are now without a win in four in the Bostik Premier after a 1-0 reverse away at Margate last weekend.

THat result has seen Bognor fall to ninth, three points behind fifth-placed Enfield Town, who are occupying the last of the playoff spots All is not lost though with Bognor making the trip to the north London side tomorrow (3pm) looking to spring a surprise against one of their bogey sides.

Despite nearly a full team of players out with injury, Pearce vows that he and the rest of the coaching staff will be going all out to try and claim one of the four spots for the end of season contest.

Speaking after the match to Rocks Radio, Pearce said: "I would love to get in the playoffs.

"But if we go up then unless there are drastic changes in the club in terms of finance, unless we extremely lucky with injuries and players who do not lose form, with the players available and money we have we would be struggling in the bottom third of the National South.

"THat's the reality. But we will battle along and try and get the team out.

"I cannot fault the effort and we lost by an odd goal with four minutes to go so we must move on."

Rocks went into the match at Margate without seven first team players, including top scorer Jimmy Muitt, influential midfielder Doug Tuck and right back Calvin Davies.

A switch to three at the back seemed to improve the Rocks' solidity, even if chances were hard to come by.

THe majority of the 80 or so fans who made the trip to the Kent coast thought a point was in their grasp until Margate struck a winner with just minutes to go.

Rocks now turn their attention to Enfield, a side who they have not beaten in the league since October, 2013.

THen there is the tricky Sussex Senior Cup semi final against Brighton & Hove Albion under 23s at Nyewood Lane on Tuesday (7.45pm).

But any hopes of having some of the injured seven back available for this crunch week look to have been dashed.

Pearce said: "THere's not much we can do about it, we just have to keep battling along.

"Every club goes through it at some point of the season. But when you have this many people missing it does make it hard to string together results.

"No one is more frustrated than the management team, we're more devastated than anyone but where do fans want us to get the players from? We can't produce what's not there."

Theo extends his Rocks stay ROCKS' fading playoff hopes have received a boost with the news THeo Widdrington has extended his loan until the end of the season.

THe hard-working midfielder has become a fan favourite since joining on a temporary basis from Bristol Rovers.

His tough tackling and energy from the centre of the park has pushed the Rocks on since making his debut in the 2-0 away win at Worthing just before Christmas.

After returning from injury last month, the 19-year-old has continued his fine form for the Rocks - which is why large sections of the Nye Camp will be pleased to hear he has put pen to paper to extend loan deal from the League One side Widdrington, who joined Rovers from Portsmouth last summer, couldn't help the Nyewood Lane outfit from slipping to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Margate on Saturday.

But Pearce and coach Robbie Blake hope he can help Bognor get back on track when they travel to Enfield Town tomorrow.

Pearce said: "THeo has come in and done ever so well for us and we are delighted to be able to secure his services for the rest of the season."

AFTER picking up just one point in the last two matches, we seem to have hit a bad run of form at the wrong time of the season.

Injuries to key players are not helping.

I think we have got more players injured than we have available for selection When it gets like this especially considering the injuries that we have - we all have to just keep plodding on.

It's difficult to say what’s happening with our club at the moment.

Saturday's defeat at Margate was probably a fair result, I think, on reflection.

We didn’t really look like scoring and I think those watching will say that it was only ever going to be a draw or a win for them. We just didn’t do enough to win the game.

THat's nothing against Margate who are a good side and will always be pushing towards the top of this league or challenging in the next.

When you go there and turn up without players like Doug Tuck or Jimmy Muitt it will always be harder than it might have been.

Because of missing players we had to adapt the way we played.

We opted for a 3-5-2 as for the first time in months we had a full complement of centre halves to pick from.

In fact, looking around the dressing room, it seems that's all we have at the moment!

THe formation was all about trying to get them on the pitch with two wing backs either side.

But, while that plays to our strengths of available players, that means losing some of our midfield dominance which has been our main game for a while.

It doesn't get any easier either as we have the trip to Enfield tomorrow.

It is one of the worst grounds I think I've been to as I can’t ever remember winning and I

normally get injured too!

THere's no doubt though that we are capable of getting a result.

But that task is always a bit easier when you have the likes of Jimmy, Doug and Joe Tomlinson who you know can pull something out of the bag if you need it.

THere's also the Brighton cup match too, although I am not available for that one.

Again it will be a tough one, albeit with the incentive of a nice day out at THe Amex in May as a reward.

But I think the main focus has to be on Saturday and getting a result then.

I know a lot of the fans are still talking about the playoffs.

It's hard to say how things will go between now and the end of the season.

I think I'm being realistic when I say that it will be tough given that we have fallen off it slightly.

But personally, it is always a matter of pride to try to get as many points as we can so I will be going out there to win every game.

THe injuries do make it tough, though, with Calvin and Joe Tomlinson joining Jimmy, Doug and others on the sidelines.

While we have some of the lads coming back to fitness, they will need time to get match fit.

It’s not really fair to rush people straight back but we don’t really have too much choice at the moment It is what it is. Whoever gets out on the pitch, we all get paid good money to give the right attitude and approach any match with the correct mentality.

THe teams we are putting out are good enough but for whatever reason we are just not performing. It's something we need to work on.

We need to keep on giving everything what we have.

Out of personal pride we have to get as many point as we can.
