Council makes election error

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VOTING for local elections took place yesterday with residents across Chichester heading to the polling stations but the district council has had to apologise for an error it made.

Chichester District Council has issued an apology for an error on the electoral register which affected over 100 homes.

THe council’s chief executive, Diane Shepherd, requested a full data matching exercise of the whole of the district after an error affecting 147 properties in the city was spotted.

A spokesperson said: "We are very sorry for the error regarding the household information sent to candidates.

"As soon as we became aware of the issue, we immediately contacted all those affected.

"On the Monday we provided an updated register to all the local political party headquarters, sent letters out to the affected electors, as well as issuing new poll cards to them. Only this part of the city was affected, with a total of 147 properties across the following roads: Peter Weston Place, Laburnum Grove, Eastgate Mews and parts of Cawley Road, Velyn Avenue, Market Avenue and THe Hornet."

Cllr Sarah Sharp, from the city council, said: "Clearly we're all human and can make mistakes but I was really flabbergasted to find out that the council had made a mistake over the boundary changes.

"We knew that the boundaries were changing but the whole process has been rather messy.

"However, when the candidates received their lists with the 'Register

of Electors' we decided to go with the printed out lists as we thought they would be correct.

"THerefore, we delivered two leaflets according to the lists and were in the process of delivering letters to postal voters when we found out that some of our roads were no longer part of Chichester south."

As a result of the exercise requested

by Ms Shepherd, it was found that three further streets had been incorrectly placed in the Sidlesham and Selsey North ward instead of Selsey South ward. BY KEL THe affected three streets were: Montalankelly.wickha Crescent, THe Wadeway and Medmerry.

"THe law recognises that errors may occur and provides me with the power to correct the register by 9pm on the day of the poll. Please be assured that I have taken all necessary steps to rectify the situation."

Police investigate reported rape of teenager in Tangmere POLICE are investigating an allegation of rape, which is reported to have occurred in a field in Tangmere, Chichester, between 7pm and 8.30pm on Friday.

THe victim – a teenage girl – described her attacker as a man of mixed race, around 6ft, of mediumbuild, with broad shoulders.

He was wearing a white hoody, with the hood up and a black snood covering his face.

He spoke with a local accent in a deep voice and smelled of cannabis.

THe incident was reported to police on Sunday and forensics investigators attended the scene the following morning (Monday).

Police have been carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the area.

Meanwhile, the victim is receiving the support she needs.

Police are urging anyone with any information to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 1006 of 28/04.

by Chichester Rotary Club.

THe prizes were presented by the mayor of Chichester, Cllr Martyn Bell, in the historic and beautiful council chamber at the Assembly Rooms surrounded by pictures and artefacts dating from the 17th century.

THe award ceremony for the annual competition was held on Friday and attended by 13 prize-winners from local schools together with their parents,

teachers and family members.

Sponsors of the competition, THe Trefoil Trust, John Wiley & Sons and Woods Travel Group, were also represented.

THe poetry judge, Emma-Jane Hughes, who has taught creative writing at the University of Chichester for a number of years, said: "THe standard of poems submitted by children from schools in Chichester and surrounding districts was exceptionally high this year."

Mr Colin Old, English teacher at Chichester High School, said: "My desire is always to pass on my love of words to younger pupils, to encourage them to create their own images using the wealth of vocabulary at our disposal in the

English language.

"Hopefully, my enthusiasm will spill over into the lives of these youngsters, convincing them that words can have power, creativity and passion. It was a pleasure to hear the pupils read out the poems which they were clearly very proud of. Just seeing the smiles on the faces of the children and their parents is a delight."

Cliff Hughes, the competition organiser, said this was the 11th year that local schools demonstrated their commitment to poetry and supported the competition He thanked fellow Rotarians who had supported the competition with their help and expertise.

THere will also be some exciting events and activities taking place throughout the summer months on the streets of Chichester city centre, details of which will be released in due course.

Over recent months, the city centre has seen big-name stores including

House of Fraser, Swarovski, East and HMV close. Many of these businesses closed as a result of the companies being forced into administration.

Just last week, the Chichester Post confirmed that ,huge retail chain, Poundland was set to close next month.

Smaller, independent shops and cafes, including Pushka Fashion Boutique, Guitar Sound Forum Café and Wine Bar, Baileys Artisan Gelato and Solutions Inc, blamed several factors, including high rents.

Back in February, former mayor, Richard Plowman, said that Chichester BID and the district council were in denial about what was happening to the city centre.

He said when he was mayor of the city in 2005/06, the city was thriving and the current decline was due to high rents and increased parking charges.

Police in Chichester want to interview him about two sneak thefts of purses from unattended bags in the city centre At lunchtime on two Saturdays, March 2, and April 13, the purses were stolen and bank cards were used in nearby shops and pubs before being used to buy a single rail ticket to Havant each time.

Planning for district councillor is refused

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A CHICHESTER district councillor has not been employed as part of his service at the authority, his colleagues have ruled.

Cllr Andrew Shaxson, who lives in Buryfield Cottage, off Sheepwash, near Elsted, retired from farming in 1995.

THere is a condition attached to the property which limits occupation of the dwelling to a person who is either employed, has ceased to be employed or was last employed in agriculture.

Cllr Shaxson, who has represented Harting on Chichester District Council since 1999, submitted an application to ‘regularise the situation’.

He argued that his role as councillor constituted the ‘definition of employment’ and since he has been in breach of the agricultural occupancy condition for more than a decade the council should grant him a lawful development certificate.

THis would mean the condition could no longer be enforced.

However, council officers argued on the balance of probabilities and evidence submitted that his service as a councillor did not represent employment.

THerefore, they argued his last employment was in agriculture and complied with the current restrictions and was not in breach of the condition.

THe council’s planning committee sided with officers and refused the application on Wednesday last week by seven votes to zero, with six abstentions.

Afterwards, Cllr Shaxson said he was not disappointed by the decision, which does not mean he has to leave his home.

He will now consider whether to appeal.

His written statement to the council said: “Having given up active farming in 1995, I have since 1999 spent many hours a week on most days of the year ‘being involved’ in many aspects of council work, on behalf of my electorate, the district council and other areas of local government. THis constitutes the definition of employment, noting the wording of the condition.”

Committee chairman Bob Hayes described how when he joined the council it was made ‘abundantly clear to me that we are not paid employees are, in fact, doing this for the love of it’.

Cllr Carol Purnell said: “My understanding when I first became a councillor is that we are not employed at all. What we get paid is an allowance, not a salary.”

Cllr Gordon McAra was the only member to signal any support for the application. He said: “In Elsted we have already allowed a number of change of use applications from agricultural tenancies to normal residential accommodation in the last two to three years. It’s not unusual in an area like this where buildings tied to farming or agriculture have made the transition to residential.”

But officers said the planning merits of lifting the condition were not relevant.

Several councillors expressed disquiet at allowing the application, which would be accepting that councillors were employed in their roles.

f Andrew McDowall is closing down

Clothing store of over 75 years could be separated for new store A CLOTHING store in the city centre which has confirmed its closure could now be split into two separate shops.

Andrew McDowall, at 29-30 North Street, Chichester, announced its closure in April.

A planning application has now been made to divide the traditional menswear and ladieswear store into two shops.

Managing director Andrew Moore says the store would close when its stock clearance sale had ended.

He said: "We’re touched by the number of people who have expressed their sadness at Andrew McDowall

closing.

"Everything must go, including the antique furniture, and we have now reduced prices further.

"THen the building will be in the hands of its new owners. It’s a lovely traditional building and we wish them all the best with their new venture."

THe building dates from 1760. It was once two shops, and the partition between the two will be reinstated.

THe early 19th century grade II listed shop front is within the Chichester Conservation Area, and will remain unchanged. It is not yet known who will occupy the two shops.

Huge rise in foodbank use

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MORE than 1,000 emergency food parcels were handed out in the Chichester district during the last year, a 22 per cent increase on the previous 12 months.

THe city's foodbank has revealed that it provided 1,138 three-day emergency food parcels to feed 2,865 local people, including 1,171 children, between April, 2018, and March, 2019.

THe local foodbank’s figures match the national picture, with a record increase in food bank use across the UK reported by the Trussell Trust.

THe Trussell Trust is a charity that coordinates the only nationwide network of foodbanks.

THe Trussell Trust foodbanks collectively fed 1.6 million people throughout the UK. Chichester District Foodbank is backing calls from the Trussell Trust to ensure the benefits system is able to protect people from poverty.

THe charity believes the local increase is due to people struggling with low income and benefit problems.

THe Chichester area has seen a marked increase in people coming for food parcels due to benefit changes and delays due to issues with universal credit, such as the five-week wait.

Joanne Kondabeka, Foodbank manager of Chichester District Foodbank said: “No one in the Chichester District should need a foodbank’s help.

"We want to see an end to local people needing emergency food at all. It doesn’t have to be this way - our benefits system

is supposed to protect us all from being swept into poverty.

Is leaving many without enough money to cover the basics. THis isn’t right.

“Until we reach a future where food banks are no longer needed, we’ll continue to provide vital support when it matters most.

"We’re dedicated to ensuring that people in our community without enough money for food are able to access emergency support.

"Our vital work in the community has only been possible in the last year because of the incredible generosity shown by local people in donating food, time and funds. THank you.”

Running costs for the foodbank are raised locally to enable them to continue their work, including a kids holiday lunch pack scheme, which feeds children on free school meals due to low income during the holidays.

THe Trussell Trust’s chief executive, Emma Revie, said: “What we are seeing year-upon-year is more and more people struggling to eat because they simply cannot afford food. THis is not right.

“Enough is enough. We know this situation can be fixed – that’s why we’re campaigning to create a future where no one needs a food bank.

"Our benefits system is supposed to protect us all from being swept into poverty.

"Universal credit should be part of the solution but currently the five week wait is leaving many without enough money to cover the basics.

"As a priority, we’re urging the government to end the wait for universal credit to ease the pressure on thousands

of households.

“Ultimately, it’s unacceptable that anyone should have to use a food bank in the first place.

"No charity can replace the dignity of having financial security.

"THat’s why in the long-term, we’re urging the Government to ensure benefit payments reflect the true cost of living and work is secure, paying the real living

New cycle path completed linking two major nature reserves together A NEW 3km cycle route has been completed, linking Medmerry Nature Reserve with Pagham Nature Reserve, boosting facilities for residents, visitors and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

THe county council’s public rights of way team worked with THe Manhood Peninsula Partnership on ideas to bolster tourism in the area - and found that cycling provision was under represented. From this, a £400,000 scheme was devised. It includes: • 1.2km of shared pedestrian/cycling pathway • Re-construction/improvement on cycle route 88 • 1.7Km of improvements to the path between the new route and flood defences at Selsey.

THe council’s project manager, THomas Collins, said: "THe project has been receiving positive feedback from Sustrans as well as from visitors to the RSPB nature reserve.

"A key aim for the project was to reinforce the ‘sense of place’ in the area, enabling the Manhood Peninsula to become even better known as somewhere with wonderful scenery and impressive wildlife that is readily accessible

to visitors."

Contractor for the scheme was Balfour Beatty Living Places. Lloyd Allen, county principal operations manager, said: “We are delighted to successfully hand over the new cycle route to the council. THe scheme will significantly benefit the local community and visitors alike, improving access to the Medmerry nature reserve while providing a sustainable transport scheme for residents, visitors and wildlife enthusiasts."

Welcoming the new facility, Steve Webster, Site Manager at the RSPB’s Pagham Harbour and Medmerry Reserves, said: “THe RSPB is thrilled with the construction of the new cycle link between the Pagham Harbour and Medmerry nature reserves.

“Working in collaboration with West Sussex County Council and other partners, this route provides opportunities for local residents, holiday-makers and visitors to the reserves to get around more easily – taking in the views, getting exercise and of course, seeing the wildlife."

` Police reports OVER THE week from Monday, April 15, to Sunday, April 21, there were several reports made to police in the Chichester area.

Over the week, police have received three reports of breakins to vehicles at beauty spot areas across Chichester. Locations included Goodwood and West Stoke Car Park.

Also during the week, police received three separate reports of arson. THese included some grassland in Brandy Hole Lane, a refuse bin in Portfield way and a tree in Brandy Hole Lane. THey are urging anybody to report anything suspicious.

In Malcolm Road, Tangmere, on Monday, April 15, a vehicle was broken into. Cash was stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0231 15/4.

On THursday, April 18, a vehicle was broken into and power tools stolen from Lavington Park, Petworth. Serial 0724 18/4.

On Friday, April 19, a vehicle was broken into in Old Park Lane, Bosham, and a bag stolen from the back seat. Serial 0355 19/4.

On Sunday, April 21, police received a report that a residential property in Brandy Hole Lane, Chichester had been broken into over the weekend. Both a shed and garage had been entered and fishing equipment stolen. Serial 1078 21/4.

In Hunston, Chichester, on Sunday, April 21, a vehicle was broken into while parked in a lay-by by the canoe club between 5.30pm and 6pm. A drone was stolen from the vehicle 1114 21/4.

Midhurst, have covered a half marathon distance before.

THeir decision to take part came about when they went out on a run together and after just two miles decided a sponsored effort would be a great idea to raise money for two good causes.

THey have been training hard and so far have completed several seven-mile distances together, but know they have to focus on stepping up their stamina levels for the half marathon.

With Rachel and Abbie on the day and already in training will be Daniel Riella, Rachel’s partner, and the sous chef at the New Street Bar and Grill in Petworth.

He volunteered at the Uganda project alongside Rachel and the couple plan to return next year to help the hardworking team there.

Friends and colleagues are right behind the fundraising effort and sponsoring Rachel and Abbie who have not set themselves a definite target other than successfully completing the distance and hopefully raising several hundred pounds for each charity.

A SUPERMARKET in the city has teamed up with a homeless charity to help those in need.

Aldi’s Chichester store is now donating surplus food directly to Stonepillow, a local charity that distributes food to homeless people in the area.

THe new partnership follows on from a successful trial between the supermarket and community engagement platform, Neighbourly.

Aldi has paired up a total of four stores in West Sussex with local good causes that are now collecting surplus food up to five days a week.

Each store is donating perishable items such as fresh fruit and veg, longlife items and baked goods.

THe trial began in January, 2019, and following its success, was rolled out across Aldi’s entire store estate.

Last year, the supermarket donated two million meals to charity and expects to increase this by 50 per cent now the trial has been extended to its 827 stores.

It will be a first for two members of staff at Q Hair and Beauty when they line up for the start of the Brighton Run2Music half marathon.

Hair stylist director Rachel Waller will be running in aid of the Uganda Lodge Community Project, where she spent several weeks as a volunteer a year ago.

THe project has a school and housing for over 500 children aged between two and 16, as well as a medical centre, hair salon, sewing room, training restaurant and lodges.

It urgently needs money to continue and develop its invaluable work.

` Midhurst break-in POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a break-in at a commercial premises in Midhurst.

A Land Rover Defender was driven onto the site of Works Yard on the Cowdray Estate, in Easebourne Lane, between 9.30pm and 10pm on April 25.

Four men, all wearing gloves and face coverings, were then seen to break into four vans and a garage, stealing a large number of tools, three strimmers and a water pump.

THe total loss in thefts and damages is estimated to be in the region of £25,000.

Following the burglary, some of the suspects were seen to get back into the Land Rover, while the others made off on foot, and investigators believe another vehicle may have been involved.

THe Land Rover was reported stolen from a property in Heathfield Green, Midhurst, around the same time the incident occurred at Works Yard.

Anyone with information is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 212 of 26/04.

Rotary keeps residents' blood pressure in check at council

THe Stroke Association joined forces with Rotary International to help raise awareness of one of the biggest risk factors for stroke, high blood pressure.

THe city's town crier, Richard Plowman was seen around the city centre to encourage people to come and have a free blood pressure test.

Around 214 people were seen and had their blood pressure checked. Of those seen, 68 (32 per cent) people were advised to get a routine follow-up within a month, while seven (3.5 per cent) were advised to get an urgent follow-up within a week.

THe free blood pressure tests held on Saturday, at the old court room, in THe Council House in North Street, highlighted the dangers of high blood pressure and gave advice on how to avoid it.

Richard said: "We had another great response with over 200 people having their blood pressure checked.

"As Town Crier I am able to persuade a wide section of people to attend. THe best comment I had was from one lady who complained seeing the Town Crier in his uniform had put up her blood pressure!”

Over half of all strokes can be caused by high blood pressure and it is estimated that over five million people across the UK don’t realise they have the condition.

Blood pressure is the measure of how strongly your blood presses against the walls of your arteries when it is pumped around your body. High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) develops when this pressure is consistently too high.

A stroke can happen to anyone but there are some things that increase the risk of a stroke.

Younger people can have strokes too, including children and one in four strokes in the UK happens to people of working age.

Claire Fincham, Stroke Association prevention manager, said: “We’re delighted that so many people came

along for their blood pressure checking and that we were able to alert those whose blood pressure was too high that they should see their doctor.

“A stroke can be devastating but in many cases is preventable. High blood pressure is a contributing factor in around half of all strokes, but it often doesn’t have any symptoms and is much more common than people think. So it’s

really important that people know their blood pressure.

“THat’s why we urge as many people as possible have theirs checked at our Know Your Blood Pressure events. It’s quick and easy and it could save your life.”

Flying high at the city's cathedral with special insight into peregrines

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VISITORS to Chichester Cathedral have been treated to a rare sight - to see the nesting peregrines up close.

Volunteers set up telescopes from the cathedral grounds while Cloisters cafe shows the live webcam view of the nesting site in the spire.

Since early January, the male and female have been spotted on a number of occasions, and at this stage it looks like the birds are settling in well. It is hoped that another batch of chicks will be successfully fledged this year with a sighting of four eggs already.

Peregrines were seen on the tower in the mid 1990s and may well have been

visiting for many hundreds of years before.

THey have been very successful nesting on the cathedral and have fledged more than 60 chicks since the first in 2001.

THese magnificent birds of prey can grow up to half a metre in length and have a wingspan of over a metre. THey live for 15 to 18 years and are actually the fastest animals in the world, diving at speeds of just under 250 miles an hour to catch their prey. THey are also incredibly agile, and have been observed flying upside down to catch food dropped by a mate.

THis year the peregrine project will be run jointly by the cathedral, the Sussex Ornithological Society and local wildlife enthusiasts David and Janet Shaw, who have been observing the birds since

2001.

David and Janet can often be found in the evenings during the season watching and photographing the action, and are happy to chat to the public about their observations.

THe RSPB sadly pulled away from funding the project in December, citing business reasons and David said that after speaking with the cathedral, they work together along with the Sussex Ornithological Society.

David said: "I and Janet have followed the birds since 2001 and about ten or so years ago we created a website for the peregrines.

"THe birds are currently running about three weeks behind, due to the weather and the cathedral roof work.

"It's all looking very successful at the moment, though, and we would expect the eggs to hatch in around a week's time. We have added an extra weekend because of the delay. I'd say that the best time to come and see the chicks would be during that weekend,."

THe weekend saw between 200 and 300 attending on the Saturday and around 400 on the Sunday with some travelling as far as Norwich and Newbury.

David continued: "A lot of people don't realise that peregrines make the best parents. THe male and female take it in turns to sit on the nest and once the chicks hatch they look after each bird, making sure they all get fed equally. I think that they have only failed about one chick."

THe series of open days are being held at weekends. THe remaining dates are May 4, 5, 18, 19, June 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 – all weather permitting.

` Sneak thefts A MAN has been arrested and charged with three counts of causing criminal damage at the Coop store in Lavant Road, Chichester, in March and April following a spate of window smashing.

Police released an image of a man they wanted to speak to in connection with the incidents after the windows of the store based on a fuel station forecourt were damaged on at least four occasions.

A member of the public recognised the man from the image and contacted police.

Julian Meadows, 43, of no fixed address, has been released on bail to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on May 14.

` Mount Noddy ANIMAL rescue centre, Mount Noddy, in Eartham, is set to expand with an extra charity shop.

RSPCA Sussex Chichester and district branch, Mount Noddy, is self-funded and relies on the generosity of those living in the Post area.

THe centre provides care and assistance to abandoned, abused and unwanted cats and dogs, acting as a temporary refuge.

THe charity already has four shops located in Horsham, Chichester, Bognor Regis and Worthing.

Charity calls for help locating former children's home kids

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AS ACTION for Children marks 150 years of helping vulnerable children, the charity is launching a nationwide search for the descendants of some of the UK’s first children in care.

THe charity has released historic images from its archives of vulnerable children in Victorian Britain to allow the public to identify family members.

THe children featured were looked after in some of the country’s first ever care homes, established by the National Children’s Home - now Action for Children - in the late 1800s.

Jan Twynam, from Chichester, is the great grandniece of Alice Valentine, who was looked after in National Children’s Homes in London and Yorkshire.

Jan said: “I've been researching my family tree for seven years and although I knew of Alice I had absolutely no idea she'd been in a children's home.

“It shocked me at first but then I was so happy to find out she'd stayed in the home for a number of years and that she lived a long life, dying at the age of 89.

As far as I can tell she lived a happy life too.

“I was four when Alice died and as far as I know I never met her but I really wish I had. Getting involved with Action for Children’s search has renewed my determination to find out even more

about my other relatives from all those years ago.

“It's also been so wonderful seeing photos the charity had of Alice as a little girl and notes written about her from the home. It's opened a whole new chapter up in terms of researching my family.”

THe homes were set up at a time of widespread poverty when some children were sleeping on city streets and families were facing the workhouse. Children were also taken into care following the loss of parents to illness, when families struggled to cope with disabilities, or parents in abject poverty simply wanted to give their children a better life.

In its 150th year, the charity wants to remember the lives of some of the first children it cared for and help descendants find out more about their family members, as well as explore the issues that affected vulnerable children when it was founded, and still do today.

Carol Iddon, Action for Children’s managing director of services, said: “THis search is a reminder of how far we’ve come in helping the most vulnerable in society, but also how far we still have to go to make sure children today have a safe and stable future.

“Every day at Action for Children we still see families under threat of losing their home, living with problems like domestic violence or struggling to put food on the table.

"All the while, children’s services are continuously being stripped back due to

lack of government funding."

Dear Sir, I may have misunderstood the following situation but it may also be a new scam.

On Saturday last, I was walking past the old House of Fraser building when a lass of about 20 and of a foreign hue, tapped me on the shoulder from behind.

As I turned to face her, she pointed at my walking stick then at her right ear and gave the BSL sign that she was deaf. Not a sound from her. She then showed me a clipboard with a blue badge logo at the top of a page of

High winds cancel Selsey litter pick HIGH WINDS on Saturday caused the Selsey Town Litter Pick to be cancelled.

Storm Hannah hit the UK with winds of more than 80mph. A yellow wind warning for Wales and central and southern England was lifted at 3pm.

Selsey and District Lions Club and Selsey Town Council and Chichester district community wardens organised the event as part of a national event.

THe Selsey litter-pick was due to take place from 10am to 1pm on April 27 with volunteers meeting at East Beach car park.

SUSSEX POLICE is looking again at how it records a range of offences after finding it had failed to report more than half of its knife crime, the police and crime commissioner has said.

At a meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel on April 26, Katy Bourne told councillors the force was looking at how it records a range of offences in light of the under-recording of knife crime.

As reported in March, Sussex Police figures show it had failed to record 1,322 knife crime offences between 2016 and 2018.

Mrs Bourne made her comments in response to a question posed by Chichester District Council deputy leader Eileen Lintill, who referred to a 2014 report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary.

Cllr Lintill said: “A number of us were on panel when the inspectorate uncovered the problems with crime

reporting previously. Y "You reassured us that it had been sorted and there weren’t any problems going forward.

“Are you concerned there are fundamental issues with how crime types are recorded?”

Mrs Bourne said: “I am monitoring this and the accuracy of how they record crimes. It was about four or five years now that HMIC did their initial crime data integrity inspection and Sussex Police were actually the highest performing force at that time.

“While we are really keen, as the chief constable said, not to rest on our laurels, the issue of the knife crime recording was a lack of process. It slipped up."

THe revised figures now show a yearon-year increase of knife crime within the county. However, the papers say the risk of knife crime in Sussex ‘remains low'.

Winds of 82mph were recorded on the Llyn Peninsula in north Wales on Friday evening and 78mph at Pembrey Sands in Carmarthenshire.

Sue Osborne, community support co-ordinator from SelseyWorks, said: "Following the weather warnings issued across the area the team from the Lion’s club in consultation with the Chichester District Community Warden felt it was unsafe to proceed with the event.

"We hope to work in partnership with all those involved later in the year to run the event."

GILLIAN Keegan MP met with members of the Extinction Rebellion group in Parliament.

THe Chichester MP asked to address the group to discuss their campaign. Mrs Keegan spent over an hour hearing and debating with almost 50 protesters who were present.

THe Rebellion movement had spent the previous three days protesting outside parliament and at other major landmarks and transport hubs across the capital, bringing London to a standstill at times.

During the conversation, they announced a range of policy ideas to help curb climate change. THere were areas where Mrs Keegan disagreed with their approach, such as the suggestion of a one-child policy and a bid to limit citizens to a single long-haul and short-haul flight per year.

THe Chichester MP described these ideas as ‘totalitarian’ on an appearance on the BBCs Westminster Hour.

However, there were six suggestions that Mrs Keegan said she would investigate further and write to the minister about.

After the meeting, one of the Extinction Rebellion protesters in attendance, Chris Gibson, posted on Twitter to say: "All respect to @GillianKeegan who came and met all our group, irrespective of constituency, engaged robustly but fairly, listened, and I hope and believe took away some positive ideas of the ways this government can start to step up to the mark."

DETERMINATION, dedication and sheer talent. THe trio of traits that helped Chloe Buchanan win a national education award for her achievements at Chichester College.

Chloe, 22 from Gosport, was presented with the Outstanding Academic Achievement Access Award at this year’s Keith Fletcher Memorial Access to HE (Higher Education) awards ceremony, which was held at THe Houses of Parliament earlier last week (Wednesday 26 April).

She said: “It was a surprise to find out I had won this award. It wasn’t really until we got to the ceremony that I think I realised the importance of the award!

“I felt really proud to win and my family keep telling everyone, they were really excited.”

Chloe completed an Access to Higher Education course in Humanities at Chichester College last year and is now studying English Literature at the University of Portsmouth.

She added: “I really surprised myself.

I had a difficult time doing my A-levels and I didn’t finish them. THe idea of studying anything was really scary for me, but I loved every minute of my course at Chichester.

“It gave me a gentle nudge back into education and built my confidence.

“I think I’ve surprised myself. If it wasn’t for the Access course, I wouldn’t be doing as well as I’m doing. I’d be completely lost!”

Chloe was nominated for the award by Chichester College lecturer Madeleine Bailey, who also attended the ceremony.

Madeleine said: “Chloe was an outstanding student. When reading her work, I found myself learning new things and considering topics in different ways.

“Her writing stood out for its eloquence,

precision and insight.

“As well as strong academic skills, Chloe is also an extremely kind, personable young woman who I’m proud to see excelling at university. She really has a bright future ahead of her.”

Allergy advice WEST SUSSEX Trading Standards is to contact all known takeaways in the county likely to be selling noodle dishes to offer allergy advice after traces of egg were discovered in dishes that should not have contained it.

Officers posed as customers with an egg allergy when ordering noodle dishes from ten takeaways in Worthing and Lancing.

Six of the businesses supplied dishes which, on analysis, were found to contain trace levels of egg. THis means that although egg was not an ingredient, the dish had been contaminated with egg - most likely from utensils that had been used to prepare egg dishes or the ingredients themselves had been in contact with egg.

Tests proved the levels were sufficient to have caused a reaction for some

people with an egg allergy.

Officers are trying to determine how the cross-contamination took place at the business concerned.

Trading Standards manager Peter Aston said: “Although the takeaways where issues were found were in Worthing and Lancing, it would be a reasonable assumption that similar results would be found across the county.

"For this reason, we are going to be contacting takeaways likely to be selling noodle dishes, advising them of the steps they should be taking to stop crosscontamination.”

Spot checks will continue to be made at other sellers around the county.

Uni is in top 15 THE University of Chichester has been named as one of the top 15 higher education institutions in the UK. National rankings from the Whatuni student choice awards placed Chichester as the 14th-best in the country, after votes from more than 41,000 students were counted.

THe top rankings represent a meteoric rise for Chichester, which has climbed 68 places – up from 82nd position – since last year.

THe university’s support was highlighted as the fifth best in the UK, alongside its courses and lecturers, while its students union was rated as one of the top eight in the country.

Across the last six months, the Whatuni review collection team collected more than 41,000 student reviews from 160 institutions.

University pro vice-chancellor Dr Mark Mason said: “We are immensely proud to

be named in the top 15 universities in the Whatuni student choice awards.

“Such results are testament to the commitment we make to ensuring that each of our students is treated as an individual and is supported throughout their time with us.

“It is also an affirmation of the superb work carried out by our students’ union.”

THe University of Chichester has been a strong performer in recent award rankings: its students’ union was named among the best in the country for safe drinking and well-being in a national students survey.

It is also seventh overall for student engagement, according to the 2018 UK engagement survey, and in the top ten per cent for its learning community.

` Student comes second place A CHICHESTER College brickwork student is celebrating after earning well-deserved second place at a recent college competition.

Brandon Harwood-Telfer took the runner-up spot at the regional heats of the Guild of Bricklayers competition, which was held at Highbury College, Portsmouth, on Wednesday, April 24.

In coming second, Brandon was presented with new tools and a cash prize.

Lecturer Neil Redman said: "Brandon has worked hard and did the very best he could, demonstrating skill and determination.

“He has put in a lot of time with the brickwork lecturers, including Glen Smith, Steve Smith and Dave Poppleston-Mead, to reach the standards he is achieveing.

"We thought he did really well, and it looked like he came very close to winning.

"He certainly did us all proud and we're sure the experience will stand him in good stead for the SkillBuild competition in June. It should give him confidence in his own abilities."

Although Brandon narrowly missed out on a place in the Guild of Bricklayers finals, he will have another opportunity to build on these foundations in June when he takes his place in the regional SkillBuild competition - the first stage in the route to the 2021 WorldSkills Finals in Shanghai.

Police cash boost to help Crack and opiate protect children from abuse users in region have increased

MORE than 2,500 people in West Sussex are believed to be crack cocaine and opiate users.

THe number of drug addicts is part of an estimated south east regional total of 35,135.

THe figures have been compiled

by Public Health England and is an increase of some 16 per cent in just four years.

THe report has been analysed by concerned addiction treatment experts at the UKAT treatment firm.

THey say the increase to 2,695 residents aged between 15 and 64 years old is even more worrying because the figures only include those who are using both crack cocaine and opiates like heroin and opiate-like prescription drugs.

Anyone using cocaine in powder form, amphetamines, ecstasy or cannabis has not been included.

UKAT's chief executive and former addict, Eytan Alexander, said the 3,600 people in the south east aged only 15-24 and using opiates and/or crack cocaine was of particular concern.

"Public Health England's data clearly shows that an alarming number of teenagers and young adults are addicted to these incredibly potent substances.

"THey're seeking the feeling of euphoria at pocket money prices.

"Crack rocks can be purchased for as little as a fiver with dealers available any time of day at the click of a button.

"Teenagers misusing crack and opiates at such an early age will not only suffer with the physical effects of the drugs.

"But the drugs could impact their education, overall achievement in life and expose them to a criminal environment at a young age, without full understanding of the risks and consequences of their actions."

Older age groups in the south-east's population are also addicted to crack and opiates.

Public Health England's figures show 10,621 individuals aged 2534 are addicts and a further 20,842 people aged 35-64 are hooked.

"THe impact of a person misusing these drugs in later life has a knockon effect on their family, children, spouces as well as their own personal health, which will deteriorate at a much faster pace if drug use continues and, for some, will prove fatal," added Mr Alexander.

THe south-eastern region with the highest number of users is Kent with 5,647, followed by Hampshire's 3,434.

A FREE NSPCC service which teaches primary school children how to keep themselves safe from abuse has received a cash boost from the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.

Katy Bourne awarded the charity’s Speak out Stay safe service £5,000 from the Safer in Sussex Community Safety fund which was launched by her office in 2013 for crime reduction and community safety initiatives.

With the help of mascot Buddy, specially trained NSPCC volunteers teach pupils aged four to 11 about the different forms of abuse and who they can turn to for help, such as a trusted adult or the NSPCC’s Childline service.

Following an assembly, one hour classroom workshops are also held for children in years 5 and 6.

It aims to reach children with vital, ageappropriate messages to potentially stop abuse before it occurs.

In the last academic year 2017/18, the service visited 153 Sussex schools and spoke to 39,818 primary school pupils.

Amanda Rocca, NSPCC schools area co-ordinator for Sussex, said: “We are extremely grateful to Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.

“On average, two children in every primary school classroom have experienced abuse or neglect but many children do not seek help or tell anyone what is happening until they are much older.

THis year, 160 artists will be throwing open the doors of their studios to members of the public who can see creativity at work in all its guises.

THe talents of artists taking part in the popular annual event range from traditional painting and drawing through sculpture, jewellery-making, textiles, ceramics and much more.

Tom Boulton, who has a workshop in Glamis Street, in Bognor Regis, produces large letterpress prints and stationery items while Karen Saunders creates bespoke jewellery in her garden studio in Nutbourne and Leo Stevenson is an artist specialising in oil paintings of landscapes, seascapes and aviation subjects.

THe idea of the trails is for visitors to go to studios which are geographically close together with routes

grouped as city, downs, harbour, peninsula and regis but they can be visited in any order.

THere is free entry to all the venues and works will be for sale at some of them. A printed trail leaflet is available and the organisation’s website includes interviews with participants.

It's hard to not be moved by Sheila's outstanding portrayal of a woman with the start of possible dementia forcing her to 'temporarily' move in with her son and his family.

Rachel Lumberg plays Sian, Yvonne's sister, who brings huge amounts of energy and comedy to the stage every time she appeared. Goth teenager Matt, played by Scott Folan, hit the nail on the head with his performance and Kirsty MacLaren as lead star, Nicky, was faultless. Her voice was incredibly powerful and her acting will no doubt lead her to become a huge star. She stole the show as her character struggles to unite her family.

Looking around the theatre it was hard to see many of the audience left with a straight face. THere was a comment or two that surely every person in the audience could relate to at some stage, as a father, son, brother daughter, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother or grandchild.

Art, West Dean Arts and Craft Festival 2019.

A weekend bursting with creativity at West Dean College north of Chichester will enable visitors to get hands-on with drop-in workshops and classes, see live demos, buy unique crafted items, meet the makers and see the work of emerging artists at its arts and crafts festival.

Nearly 1,000 places with more than 20 workshops will available on each of the three days from May 31 to June 2, enabling people to learn a new skill or improve. A range of crafts will

Horse racing, Opening Saturday and May Festival. A day in the countryside watching horse racing is a good way to work up an appetite and Goodwood racecourse will be the place to combine those interests when the May Festival will feature the Goodwood Food Show alongside top class flat racing at the iconic downland site.

Music, Fernhurst Choral Society: Haydn's Creation.

Uplifting music for spring will be offered by Fernhurst Choral Society at Chichester Cathedral on May 18 as they perform Joseph Haydn’s oratorio THe Creation. THe concert will be conducted by the society’s musical director and the cathedral’s assistant organist, Tim Ravalde. THe choir will be joined by three exciting young soloists and accompanied by Downland Sinfonia.

THe Creation, which depicts the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis, is a tuneful work that is deservedly considered to be one of Haydn’s masterpieces. Haydn’s bold use of orchestral colour, his adventurous harmony, exceptional rhythmic and melodic inventiveness, and the work’s strong overall unity, bring the subject to life with an almost operatic vividness and power.

Comedy, Rob Beckett: Work in Progress. Comedian Rob Beckett titles his latest show 'Work in Progress' but this fast-rising talent already seems to have established himself already with his cheeky chappy Londoner's persona.

THe production of books and the way the lettering went onto the page, to produce everything from a probate inventory to published book, is the fascinating subject which will be explored. Demonstrations will include bookbinding, calligraphy, fore-edge painting and quill making.

THe museum will be joining the national Museum at Night event on May 17 and 18 when it will open its doors for pre-booked visitors to experience the atmosphere of a guided walk in the museum at night. Guests will be guided by lamplight to different spaces around the museum, to hear a series of short night-time stories.

For May’s events, the theme of the stories will be poaching - with interesting historical stories and characters. At the end of the evening, participants are invited to gather around an open fire for a hot drink and biscuits.

Another historic life weekend on medieval medicine, on May 25 and

26, is not for the squeamish but will be educational - and entertaining, especially for younger visitors.

So if you were to wake up in the morning, 500 or 750 years ago and did not feel too well, or had an accident in the home, what could you have done? Where might you have gone for help? And how effective might different treatments have been? Go along to find out.

THis will then lead into half-term activities, from May 27-31, for children during the last week of the month when the theme will be the natural world.

'Pub grub' offer is well above average at venue close to sea

THere's still the warmest of welcomes from friendly staff but a bright, fresh new look after a revamp adds to a positive first impression after crossing the garden with its large, picturesque pond which is a haven for wildlife most of the year.

A new menu, too, is full of temptation and variety with changing specials, everything freshly made on the premises, meat and fish mostly from nearby suppliers, vegetarian and vegan options, smaller meals for pensioners and a children's menu but the popular Sunday carvery has been retained.

Being a bar, a good choice of beers and spirits is on offer as well as red, white and rose wines by the glass or bottle. On the day we visited, as I was driving, I stuck to lemonade while my husband enjoyed a pint of Seafarer bitter.

Following a warm welcome from manager Dean, who guided us through the many specials available as well as the standard menu, we decided to forego

starters in the interests of both having desserts, all of which, like everything else coming out of the Pond Barn's kitchen, are made on the premises.

Emphasising the pub's position within sound of the sea, the standard mains menu includes a tempting seafood platter, and scampi or battered fish and chips, while mussels were on the specials board when we visited. Other specials were bubble and squeak with ham and egg, turkey, ham and leek pie and a beef Madras curry plus four varieties of burger.

Vegans can enjoy a butternut squash and chick pea curry while carnivores can try a hunters' chicken or the steak of the day.

Steaks are sourced from one of the independent nearby butchers, either rump or ribeye, and I was delighted with my choice of a succulent ribeye, served with a generous portion of standard chips, tomato, mushroom and peas.

My husband always loves mussels available as either a small portion or a main - and instantly chose the classic moule marinaire with a couple of dozen shellfish cooked in a smooth, wellflavoured garlic, cream and parsley sauce.

We were told mussels cooked in Spanish-style tomato-based sauce and a THai-style one with cream and coconut are also popular.

Accompanied by crusty bread, plus a few of my chunky chips, the mussels were an undoubted hit.

With their excellent presentation and melt-in-the-mouth sweetness, our desserts of bakewell tart and an unusual chocolate and apricot bread and butter pudding were also top of the hit parade - a fitting metaphor for a pub which regularly has live music, DJs and karaoke as part of its entertainment offering as well as big screen TVs, darts and pool.

Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of 15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.

sections of appetisers, antipasta/starters, pizza, main salads, primi piatti (pasta or risotto), secondi di mare (seafood mains), secondi di carne (meat mains) and sides you know you're going to need all of that pre-dinner drink just to make up your mind.

Among the pizzas is the house special La Campania, which comprises a topping of tomato, mozzarella, artichokes, mushrooms and cheese, while among the eye-catching range of pastas is linguine with fresh clams cooked in a chilli, garlic and extra virgin olive oil.

THe standard fish menu usually has sea bass, sea bream, salmon and mussels, mostly served with complementary sauces as are the steaks. Pork belly and chicken, cooked in Milanese, Salvatore or Valdostana style are alternatives.

In some ways, it may be easier to visit on the Italian steak night, usually a THursday, or when there are fish specials but whenever you visit there is always something for everyone, including gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options.

Oat milk became a hit overnight for so many reasons. THis plant-based beverage took over coffee shops, restaurants and kitchens all over the world as its a tasty and healthy option for those looking to cut back on animal products for health or environmental reasons.

From a nutrition perspective, oat milk generally contains more calories, carbohydrates, and fiber and less protein and fat than dairy milk.

THe high fibre content is great to help you slim down and keep you feeling full for longer, so try drinking in between meals if you are on a mission to shed a few pounds before summer. Oat milk is similar to other popular dairy alternatives, like nut milks, but how does its environmental footprint compare?

Nuts like almonds and cashews have a

relatively high water footprint, (the water footprint measures the amount of water used to produce each of the goods and services we use.

It can be measured for a single process, such as growing rice, for a product, such as a pair of jeans, for the fuel we put in our car, or for an entire multi-national company.

THe water footprint can also tell us how much water is being consumed by a particular country – or globally – in a specific river basin or from an aquifer).

Oats are low by comparison so for that reason alone I would consider oat milk to be a sustainable and ethical option, especially when you know they can also help promote healthier, more nutrientdense soil.

Oats can provide quick, weedsuppressing biomass, take up excess soil nutrients and can improve the productivity of legumes when planted in mixtures and they are low-maintenance which helps to protect the soil from erosion.

Healthy soil can extract carbon from the environment, making it an important ally in the fight to slow global warming.

The history of Bishop Luffa School - Part one

By Amy Roberts, collections officer at The Novium Museum, and Matilda Lysaght, work experience student THIS week’s article will be the first of two looking at the history of Chichester’s Bishop Luffa School. In this week’s article, we will focus on the founding of the school through to the late 1970s.

On July 27, 1962, Dame Sybil THorndike, a leading actress who toured internationally in Shakespeare productions, laid the foundation stone of what was then to be known as the Bishop Luffa Church of England Secondary Modern School. THe school was named after Bishop Ralph de Luffa. Luffa was Bishop of Chichester from 1091 to 1123. Luffa oversaw the completion of the building of the cathedral, which had begun under Bishop Stigland, in time for its consecration in 1108.

THe school came about as a result of a new Education Act in 1959, which offered state funding for new church secondary schools.

THe West Sussex education authority was also planning a new school for the expanding city. THe city saw a number of new housing estates pop up in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, including the nearby Parklands estate and the Whyke estate.

THe first students started in September, 1963. At this time, there were a total of 62 students and four teachers, including the head teacher, Leslie Bartlett. THe start of the school was marked by an afternoon service at the cathedral on Monday, September 16.

THe winter of 1962-63 had been extremely harsh and had delayed building works at the new school just off Bishop Luffa Close.

Although building work had not been fully completed, Mr Bartlett insisted that the school move in by the beginning of the second term and subsequently on January 7, 1964, lessons in the new building began.

By this time, the builders had managed to construct five rooms, a staff room in what later became the library and a small room to be used as an office. Up to this point, lessons had had to be held at two classrooms used by the Lancastrian School for Boys in Orchard Street. With so little room, the head teacher’s

f The school’s early buildings office was located in a cloakroom.

Mr Bartlett was given only a term to organise the staffing, order equipment and familiarise himself with staff at the county council, as well as the local church primary schools. To begin with, only four members of staff, including Mr Bartlett, had to cover the full range of subjects.

Once the building work was complete, the school began to build itself up with an emphasis on Christian principles. THese principles were symbolised within the school by the altar and sanctuary which had been incorporated into the design of what was then the main hall, now known as the Bartlett Hall.

THe school’s original four houses were named after the then Bishop, Wilson and his three predecessors Bell, Ridgeway and Burrows.

It was three years down the line in 1965 that the Queen Mother officially opened the school building and visited all four classes.

Afternoon tea was served to a few staff and visitors in the small hall, before the Queen Mother unveiled a commemorative plaque in the wall to the left of the Queen’s Door (named so because she had opened it with a golden key on her arrival). She caused quite a stir by departing from the school’s playing field in a red helicopter.

By 1970, 120 new pupils joined the school each September and in 1971, the school became a comprehensive, inclusive of a sixth form. At this time the school teaching staff continued to grow in relation to the growing pupil population.

and arrangements were made for a large scale extension. THe number of pupils and buildings has continued to grow and now has around 1,460 students, inclusive of a sixth form of more than 270, as well as 95 teachers and 50 support staff.

Community News & Views THE 96-year-old Solent Sunbeam class welcomed a brand new yacht to its fleet last week with the launching of V70 Minty which took place at Itchenor, the base for this historic and much-admired classic keel-boat fleet.

Minty’s hull was built on the Isle of Wight by Mark Downer’s AM Structures, a GRP and composites specialist who has built all nine of the new GRP yachts. Minty was fitted out by wooden boat specialists Haines Boatyard based at Itchenor.

Harriet and Simon Patterson are the proud new owners of Minty, which sports a glacial-green hull. THey are keen sailors with children who are very active junior members of Itchenor Sailing Club. Now their children are sailing so much they wanted to get back on the water themselves. THe new owners are planning to sail as a couple, often with their children joining them as crew. Commenting at the launch they said, “THe Sunbeams are fabulous boats, combining beautiful classic lines with exhilarating sailing and competitive racing. THe class is very welcoming and gracious with help for sailors new to the boat!”

Following Minty’s launch the Fleet now on the water and racing this season grows to 27, with the new GRP hulled yachts and the original wooden versions, dating back 96 years to 1923, racing side by side on an equal basis.

THe origins of the GRP addition to this classic fleet arose 10 years ago when some of the Class members realised that the fleet number at Itchenor was in danger of declining below the critical mass needed to run a successful Class.

Enthusiastic local Sunbeam owners Alan Stannah and Roger Wickens wondered if a GRP version of the boat would attract new entrants to the fleet with the lower build and maintenance costs.

AN AMBITIOUS man is set to take on a 500 mile bike ride in the Republic of Ireland to raise money for Chichester district assistance dog charity Canine Partners.

Bob Hughes, from Burgess Hill, West Sussex, is preparing to take on the incredible cycling challenge from Mizen Head, County Cork, to Malin Head, County Donegal, in May 2019.

"My wife and I have a dear friend who has applied for one of your assistance dogs and we just found out that she has been matched with one of their dogs," says Bob, a retired 71-year-old.

"In 2017 I completed the Lands End to John O’Groats bike ride as a way to challenge myself, however it seemed silly not to raise money for charity so this time I have chosen a charity close to my heart – Canine Partners."

Canine Partners in Midhurst is a national charity that trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with physical disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence.

THe dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. THey can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency.

“I have no particular time I want to do the bike ride in and no personal best in mind, but I hope to raise at least £500,” says Bob. “I wanted to take this on firstly to push myself before I get too old, but raising money for charity also makes it worthwhile.”

A HELP to Claim service at Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice can provide advice about how to claim universal credit.

THe service will enable visitors to the Citizens Advice at East Pallant House - led by Luca Badioli, pictured above - to gain support through the application process for the benefit.

A spokesman said: "THe support provided will vary depending on individual need, but might include things such as: helping someone gather evidence of their housing or childcare costs; ensuring people know that alternative payment arrangements are available; and offering advice on what to expect at a work coach appointment and how to prepare for it."

THe service is available during the centre's opening times of 10am-4.30pm on weekdays.

FROM giving youngsters the best start in life, to supporting people through their working years, through to helping people enjoy their later years, the newly launched Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy outlines a number of key ways to reduce health inequalities at every stage of people’s lives.

THe Director of Public Health, Anna Raleigh and Chairman of the Health and Wellbeing Board, Amanda Jupp, have launched the new West Sussex Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

THe new strategy outlines the Health and Wellbeing Board's vision for improving health and wellbeing for residents in West Sussex and sets out how a few carefully selected priorities can be achieved. It will give clear vision and guidance for health and care organisations on how they should plan, commission and provide services.

THe strategy outlines the Board's vision to reduce infant mortality as well as reduce smoking during pregnancy and help tackle maternal mental health issues. It also outlines plans to support parents to create a healthy and safe home in which to raise their children, while also having comprehensive packages of support in place for youngsters leaving care as they approach adulthood.

But equally the strategy focuses on making health everyone's business and it will encourage adults to move away from significant risks to health such as smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol.

THe Health and Wellbeing Board is made up of leaders from the county council, district and borough councils, NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups, members of the voluntary sector and HealthWatch.

Its purpose is to improve the health and wellbeing of residents, and reduce the gaps in health and wellbeing between communities, while ensuring joined-up working across services.

MORE than 50 boys and girls from the 1st Barnham Scout Group received their unique Rolls-Royce patrol badges during a specially arranged visit to the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood.

Based in a village close to the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, 1st Barnham Scout Group is divided into two troops, 1st Barnham Phantom and 1st Barnham Ghost, named after two of the company’s most celebrated models. THeir new patrol badges, featuring the cars’ names and outlines stitched in gold thread, were designed by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke team, and made to official Scout Association specification.

In place of their regular evening meeting, members of both troops visited Rolls-Royce for a special event. THe Scouts took part in team activities, games and quizzes around the themes of manufacturing, design and engineering. THey also enjoyed a full tour of the manufacturing plant, where they met Associates working on the production line and saw cars being built first hand. THe evening culminated in the presentation of their new badges, which now take pride of place on their Scout uniforms.

Darts CLIFF PRIOR made it back-to-back wins in the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out Blind Knockout competition as he hit bullseye with his last dart to lift the title with partner Ian Bennison.

THe QEII Cobras player struck up a good partnership with Bennison of Fisherman's Joy and combined to defeat Dean Ardener (QE2 Lions) & Graham Hollis (Fishermans Joy) in the final.

After taking the first leg, Prior and Bennison ran away with things in the second as their opponents could not hit their in-shot.

Ardener eventually hit double 16 and a ton, but a broken stem for Prior halted the game. Prior returned but just missed double 8 for a 95 out-shot.

But even a ton from Hollis left them trailing, and Bennison took the leg.

Leg 3 saw both teams again start straight away. Prior hit a ton with his second throw, and Hollis hit a 140, but that still left himself and Ardener behind.

With 105 left, Prior hit single 1 and treble 18, leaving himself with 50.

With the last dart, he hit the bullseye, taking the title and taking home ÂŁ110 between them.

Short Mat Bowls INFINITY Short Mat Bowls Club continued their excellent form by lifting a charity cup in Portsmouth.

A team featuring Vanessa and Robin Armstrong, together with Pauline and Steve Jeffery, travelled to North End Bowls Club for the Charity 4s competition last weekend, which was in aid of THe Rowans Hospice in Waterlooville.

THe Boxgrove-based quartet performed well and made it through to the final to take on Purbrook before coming out on top.

THe competition, which was organised

by Andrew Shorney, is in its seventh year and raised ÂŁ400.

Infinity were delighted with the result, especially as Vanessa and Pauline only joined the club last September after not bowling for several years.

Elsewhere, Donnington Short Mat Bowls Club is looking for new members.

THe non-league club meets in the parish hall at Donnington, five times a week, from autumn to spring.

Marathon effort by Tone Zone team MORE than a dozen Bognor Tone Zone runners went the extra mile to complete this year's London Marathon.

THe 26 mile race is one of the most iconic in the world, seeing runners take in the sights of London while being cheered on by crowds of hundreds of thousands of people before crossing the finish line outside Buckingham Palace.

Leading the cohort of 14 runners home was Kari Mack, who ran a personal best of 3 hours 12 minutes (3:12) to beat the ladies club marathon record set by herself last year.

Duncan Stephenson-Gill demolished the demons that he had at last year’s race, to finish in a time of 3:16.

Another notable performance came from Carolyn Stapley who after having a tough 2018 came back with a 15 minute PB with 3:29.

Anne Kari Enes, who never seems to struggle, ran a consistent race as she always does to finish in 3 hours 31 minutes. Ian Bayley, back on the streets of London again this year, finished in 3 hours 52 minutes.

Donna Strowger, Karen Vilday and Lucy Isitt all finished close together and all gained PBs with sub 4:30 times.

David Butler and Paul Stevenson finished in 4:37 and 4:53 while Jade Fish ran an impressive race to finish in just over five hours.

After only starting running last year, Elle Matthews completed her first ever marathon in a time of 5:12. Nicola Kettley also ran her first marathon in 5:32, just ahead of Natalie Strudwick, who recorded a PB of 5:35.

Another marathon this weekend was the Blackpool Marathon.

Running buddies Carl Bryant and Andy Miles had trained together all year for this event and both runners battled the winds on the south coast to achieve a PB of 4:05.

THe third marathon of the weekend was the Madrid Marathon, in a slightly warmer and less windy climate.

Mark and Jackie Williamson were the first two home in a time of 3:58 and 4:20.

Grace Natoli added another marathon to her tally this year and finished in 4:45 while Derek Natoli completed the half in 2:10.

Closer to home, in Angmering, was the Bluebell 10 mile and 10k, running through the local woods. Jess THomson was the second woman to finish on the day in an incredible time of 1 hour 11 minutes.

Top class field for Goodwood RACING returns to Goodwood this weekend with an intriguing meeting pitching a number of Grade One hopes into early season action.

THe opening Saturday fixture includes an excellent seven-race programme featuring two Listed contests for fillies and mares plus the ÂŁ50,000 Goodwood May Food Festival Handicap.

Coronet, who has raced consistently in Group One races on her past four starts, is the standout among 14 entries for the ÂŁ50,000 Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Daisy Warwick Stakes (2.05pm) over 12 furlongs.

Trained by John Gosden, the five-year-old Dubawi mare finished second in three G1 contests and third in the other during 2018, including an agonising nose defeat by Waldgeist in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in July.

Cheveley Park Stud's Pilaster is set to push Coronet close, as Roger Varian's horse returns to the scene of her biggest win yet, the Lille Langtry Stakes at the festival in August.

Elsewhere, last year's 1000 Guineas winner, Billesdon Brook, is set to begin her four-year-old campaign in the other Listed race, the ÂŁ50,000 Conqueror Fillies' Stakes (3.45pm, 17 entries) over a mile.

Her trainer, Richard Hannon's other entry, Anna Nerium, also has winning course form, having swooped late to win the G3 Weatherbys Racing Bank Supreme Stakes in August.

THe ÂŁ50,000 Goodwood May Food Festival Handicap (2.40pm) over seven furlongs has attracted 21 entries.

All-weather star Goring will feature heavily in the betting after landing the ÂŁ50,000 apprentices' handicap under Georgia Dobie at Lingfield. THe weights are set to be headed by the Yorkshire trained THree Saints Bay, THe first of the seven races, the Double Trigger Handicap, is named after the only three-time winner of the Goodwood Cup and staged at 1.35pm.

Tickets can be purchased from ÂŁ12 in advance and accompanied under 18s go free in all enclosures.

Since Christmas, Pagham won just two of 20 matches in the SCFL Premier, a streak which saw them tumble down the table.

A 3-2 loss to relegation-threatened Eastbourne United in the final match of the season was the club's ninth loss in a row.

Goals from Liam Brady and Alfie Davidson looked to have bagged Lions a point.

But such has been Pagham's form in the second half of the season, a late winner for the visitors surprised no one and ensured Eastbourne United preserved their league status for another season.

For Lions, who finished the season in 11th, the close season will be give plenty of time to reflect and rebuild.

THe departure of joint manager Richie Hellen last month means that Tom Simmonds will take on all duties in the dugout.

His task will be to bring some experienced players into the club to complement an exciting crop of youngsters who have inspired Pagham to under 18s and under 21s success in recent seasons.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey completed a good season with a 3-0 win over Worthing United.

Ollie Hambleton put the Blues in front with a well-taken strike from 15 yards out in the first half.

THe victory was sealed in the second period when Tom Jefkins struck on the hour mark before Ryan Morey added a third ten minutes later.

It means that Daren Pearce's side ended the season in fifth spot, a good return for a club which enjoyed an excellent run in.

Fellow Division One side Sidlesham will also be happy with their campaign, despite a 3-1 loss to Wick last weekend.

A 10th place finish for Steve Bailey's side on their return to senior football means the club exceeded expectations for the year.

Muitt hopes to be fit and give Rocks a boost

ROCKS hotshot Jimmy Muitt says he hopes to be fit and raring to go for Bognor's cup final date.

THe club's top scorer was enjoying his best season at Nyewood Lane to date, netting 26 goals by the end of February as the club were well in the hunt for a playoff spot.

But a knee injury halted Muitt in his tracks and his absence coincided with Bognor slipping from fifth down to an eventual 14th place finish in Bostik Premier.

THe Rocks frontman returned to action against Whitehawk on Easter Monday, getting 30 minutes on the pitch in the 0-0 draw.

But with the Sussex Senior Cup final at THe Amex looming, Muitt is going all out to be fit for the Rocks big day.

He said: "I really want to play that [game] more than anything so we'll see. It [the knee] feels okay at the moment so hopefully I'll get to the Sussex Cup Final, which is local for me, even better.

"I've got a lot of people coming to watch - the whole family - so hopefully I'll get fit, get playing, because we're all looking forward to it."

Muitt began his career with the Seagulls, racking up ten years as he progressed through the club's

youth set-up.

During that time, the Rocks number 10 came up against the likes of Raheem Sterling, Rob Holding and Ruben LoftusCheek, all of whom are now plying their trade in the Premier League.

It was during a Sussex Senior Cup match for Albion against the Rocks when he impressed those who matter at Nyewood Lane, when Muitt scored twice in a 4-2 win for Bognor.

So after his release from Lewes in 2016/17, it was not long before Jimmy signed on at the Nye Camp. THree seasons on and Muitt is very much at home, netting 26 goals in what has been a prolific season.

THat was before injury hit and hampered both his and the Rocks' progress.

Muitt said: "THe season has turned very average, to say the least, but the final is something that we have worked hard for and it's something we are looking forward to.

"Definitely, as a player for me and as a team, it's good to get in the final of any cup and it's good to play at THe Amex where I have played before.

"I am really looking forward to that. I’ll definitely try to get fit for that."

Waine stars as Chi seal third CHICHESTER CITY boss Aaron Smith has hailed skipper Tammy Waine as the "complete professional" after the centre half scored one and saved one to help the side seal their best ever league finish.

THe club captain, who retires this month, netted a penalty in City's final home match of the season against QPR. THe, after regular keeper Lauren Dolbear was sent off, Waine picked up the gloves to preserve the clean sheet in the 3-0 win.

THat victory, the club's fourth this month, sealed third place in the National Southern Premier - their highest ever finish.

With an away match against struggling Gillingham to come this weekend (Sunday, 2pm) Smith hopes his side can round off a "phenomenal season" with yet another win.

Smith said: "For the first half of this season up until Christmas no one could score against us and we were nicking games 1-0, 2-0. THen that sort of slipped and we were making individual errors across the field which resulted in goals. But the last few weeks we have been solid.

"QPR have a frightening front line and have caused a lot of teams in this division problems. For us to completely shut them out I'm really chuffed.

"Hopefully, we can take that into Gillingham for the last game of the season."

Crucial to the victory was the performance of Waine who slotted home a penalty for her

first goal of the season before stepping in at the other end.

Tash Stephens and Lauren Cheshire scored the other goals.

Smith said: "She [Tammy] is brilliant and has been brilliant all season. She is not only playing well but she raises the game of others around her.

"I was completely shocked when Lewes released her but her signing for us was one of the biggest signings the club have ever made.

"She is fantastic - a complete professional.

She supports players off the field, she supports the staff off the field and she is a lovely person to have around."

IT has been a real adventure following Rocks home and away this season.

Despite the results after Christmas, the banter on the coach trips and the people who go week in and week out make it a lot easier when the team on the pitch isn’t doing all that great.

THe performances have been good but sometimes things go against you on the pitch.

THe final game of the season sort of summed up our entire year.

I felt we played well at Folkestone.

We went there with a depleted squad (sounds familiar!) but with real intent to hurt Invicta's playoff hopes.

As it was, we just couldn't put away our chances and we were beaten by a long range pass over the defence, letting Ira Jackson through to score.

I thought we deserved better but then again we were also lucky not to lose by two or three goals in the end!

THe result means that we ended the season in 14th position.

I'm not sure that we were a bottom half side, especially when you look at our squad on paper.

But then again the league table never lies and we were just not good enough in the final two months of the season to keep up with those pushing for promotion to National South.

If there has been a personal highlight of the year then it must be the success of Rocks Radio.

Its been a real pleasure working alongside Lee Roberts, Jordan Evans, Len Kilpatrick and Peter Hood on the digital airwaves this season.

I think we have brought fans just that little bit closer to the action if they can’t make the game.

Half the time I am ‘winging it’ while co-commentating trying to give a bit of insight into the match or the players so that those tuning in are

informed but also entertained.

I have to say that Lee is very good at calling the action which makes my job easier and I know the fans are gripped at home listening in.

Without the fans' support, it probably wouldn’t have continued but there has been backing from the supporters club and hard work from those within to get the service running.

I have really enjoyed it and long may Rocks Radio continue.

Of course, we will be broadcasting live on the inter web for the upcoming Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Final against Burgess Hill Town at THe Amex Stadium in Falmer.

THis will be my third time visiting the impressive Premier League stadium.

THe first two occasions have not been ideal - I have yet to see us score a goal there!

THird time lucky for us I hope!

With Jimmy Muitt returning to full fitness at the right time, and impressing against Whitehawk and Folkestone when he came on, I am sure he will be desperate to be there and involved in this game.

I think its also a perfect final opportunity for some other players to shine.

Last time out in the final we lost to Peacehaven & Telscombe 3-0 and before that to Brighton & Hove Under 23s 4-0.

I always remember Terry Dodd hitting the post in front of the Bognor faithful last time out! Couldn’t believe it! I will never forget it.

But I hope this time out we will beat the Hillians and end the season on a high!

If Bognor do manage to win it, the Rocks will end over 30 years of hurt as they last won it in the 1986/7 season! It's about time we did it again!

See everyone at THe Amex on Tuesday - and fingers crossed we will end the season with something to celebrate.

PostSport f Chi celebrate lifting the league title

CHICHESTER CITY boss Miles Rutherford has praised his players for showing "unparalleled commitment" in helping the club to the SCFL Premier crown.

THe Oaklands Park side wrapped up their season last weekend with a disappointing 4-1 loss at Eastbourne Town.

But the first defeat in the league since November did not dampen the celebratory mood from everyone involved with the club.

THanks to an unbeaten 23 match run, Chi finished the season as champions, with a tally of 94 points - nine points more than second place Horsham YMCA. THe result is a first county league title in 15 years and promotion to step four for the first time in the club's history.

For Rutherford, who joined City after 12 seasons at Portsmouth-based Moneyfields, the success was all down to the players he had at his disposal.

Writing on social media, the manager said: "On reflection, the chaps this year have been a delight to work with.

"THey have shown unparalleled commitment throughout and shown quality when called upon when it was needed the most. We have also had a right laugh.

"I doff my cap to all the

players and applaud every single one of them."

Chi made a number of changes for the match at third-place Town as they were missing regular keeper Ryan Young, midfield maestro Matt Axell and the mercurial Gicu Iordache.

After falling behind on the stroke of half time, Scott Jones grabbed an equaliser for the visitors, sweeping the ball into the back of the net for his 24th league goal of the season. THe strike was also City's 107th in the league this season.

But Town rallied and scored three second half strikes to gain a comfortable victory.

It was not enough to lift them into the top two though as YM's 2-1 win at Langney ensured the Horsham side would be joining Chi in the Bostik league next season.

City will celebrate the title win at the players presentation night tomorrow evening (Saturday) at the clubhouse in Oaklands Park from 6pm. All supporters are welcome.

On Sunday, May 5, at 4pm, the club is holding a veterans game to honour the memory of ex-players Brian Clarke and Mark Hyde. Plenty of former Chichester City players have committed to play.

Entry is free and the game will be followed by an evening disco in the clubhouse.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is urging his side to win the Sussex Senior Cup as a thank you for the supporters.

THe veteran manager admitted the club has had an "extremely disappointing" season after a 1-0 loss at Folkestone Invicta saw Rocks finish 14th in the Bostik Premier.

And while other clubs will be now focussing on the playoffs and possible promotion to National South, Bognor's attention turns to the county cup - and the chance to lift silverware on Tuesday (7.45pm) at Brighton's Amex stadium.

Standing in the way of Rocks lifting the trophy for the first time in more than 30 years are league rivals Burgess Hill Town, who finished second bottom.

Despite 20 points separating the two sides in the standings, Pearce has warned against any complacency.

He said: "We would like to win something for the fans. Our away form has been as good as anyone in the league but our home form has been terrible.

"We want to do something that

shows how appreciative we are of their support."

Rocks will be boosted in their pursuit of silverware with the return of on-loan Portsmouth striker Bradley Lethbridge and top scorer Jimmy Muitt. Mason Walsh and Doug Tuck could also feature. But Reece MylesMeekums, Ed Sanders and Joe Tomlinson are cup tied.

He added: "Looking at our form over the last nine games and we are the ones with relegation form.

"We are expecting a very hard game as they are a good team. But if we put in the same collective effort that we did against Folkestone then we will create chances. What I can’t promise is if we can take them."

For Pearce, the competition is a chance to look back to the club's glory years of the 1980s when they lifted the trophy in five consecutive seasons.

He said: "Back then there was a great deal of prestige around the competition.

"While some of that may have gone there's no doubt that it is still important and we will be going all out to win it."
