Labour prioritises high street

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TWO LABOUR councillors who have won seats on Chichester District Council said they would make the city's high street a priority.

Kevin Hughes and Sarah Lishman are the first Labour councillors on the district council in over 25 years and first on the city council ever.

THe two candidates stood for Chichester East ward during the results on Friday last week in both the district and city council.

THe last councillor to hold a seat for the Labour party was Peter Knott in 1992 and the party has never held a seat on the city council.

THe two newly-elected councillors described the results as 'overwhelming', 'mind-blowing' and like 'a miniearthquake.'

THe first thing the Labour party will be

looking to do is deliver positive action to help address urgent concerns over the future of the high street.

A Labour party spokesperson said: "We have long called for the council to intervene and provide the desperately required and appropriate leadership, working alongside BID (Business Improvement District) in response to the crisis facing our high street.

"Our first motion will be for the council to host a local summit of local businesses,

leading retailers and other stakeholders, including Chichester BID, to discuss and begin to develop a plan to help support our high streets during this difficult period."

Cllr Hughes told the Chichester Post: "We would like to thank the voters of Chichester East who supported us.

Whether you voted for us or not, we intend to represent our ward openly and fairly."

Three-year sentence for indecent images

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A MAN from Chichester is starting a three-year prison sentence for offences relating to indecent images of children.

Ian Crockford, 47, a computer operator, of Graydon Avenue, Chichester, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Tuesday, April 20, having previously pleaded guilty to possession and distribution of indecent images of children, possessing extreme pornographic images and possession of a prohibited image.

He will be a registered sex offender for life and was given a sexual harm prevention order to last until further court order, severely restricting his access to children and computers, and was also placed on the Childrens' Barring List, preventing him from any work with children.

None of the images is believed to be of local children and there is no evidence of him having contacted any of the children.

THe prosecution followed an intelligence-led investigation by detectives from the Sussex Police paedophile investigation unit.

Crockford was arrested at an address where he was then living in Charmandean Road, Worthing, in August, 2018. and computer and related

equipment was seized for examination.

Officers found that Crockford had more than 3,400 images.

Detective Sergeant Lou Hays said: "Our investigation showed that Crockford had been accessing child abuse images of the worst kind for at least ten years. Every image is in effect an abuse of individual children and a criminal offence in its own right."

POLICE are seeking the identity of the two young men in the picture after a man was threatened in Chichester.

Two suspects entered Tesco Extra in Fishbourne Road East, Chichester, around 9.20pm on Tuesday, April 30, picked up two bottles of Coke and walked out of the store without paying.

A member of staff followed the pair down a nearby alleyway but stopped when he was threatened with what was believed to be a screwdriver.

Lambing season concluded last week, with a total of 420 lambs born. THey have been joined by 84 calves.

Alex Hollands, Brinsbury Farm manager, said: "It has been an extremely busy springtime for our staff and students.

"We are pleased to say that all our

lambs and calves are thriving, thanks in no small part to the incredible efforts of our farm staff – as well as the beautiful weather that we’ve seen so far.

"Our agriculture students have also been working hard. It's an incredible learning experience for them, demonstrating what life on a farm is really like.

"It has been hard work, but that is all part-and-parcel of working as a farmer.

It is long hours but very rewarding, and I think they've seen that now!"

THe spring lambs and calves arrived following a bumper baby boom at Brinsbury in January, which saw the

birth of 13 pedigree Berkshire piglets at the farm, as well as eight Jacob lambs at the Animal Centre.

Notable for their black colouring, with white ‘socks’, tail and mark on their faces, Berkshire pigs are believed to be the oldest recorded breed of pedigree pig in the country.

Losing her seat to one of the Labour candidates, Tory, Jane Kilby told the Chichester Post the result was not unexpected.

She said: "I'm not surprised by the result, following the by-election last August, where Labour put up a very strong fight against the Conservative candidate.

"THey have worked very hard in this election and so it wasn't unexpected that they won Chichester East. It was a good, clean fight, and they won."

When asked if Mrs Kilby would come back fighting again she said: "I've done it once before and I can do it again!"

Chichester's Conservative MP, Gillian Keegan, described the overall results as a proxy vote for Brexit.

She said: "Everyone's known this election was going to be very difficult

with Brexit not being resolved. It has become a bit of a proxy for Brexit that has also affected the turnout.

"THere has been a very clear message from the Liberal Democrats which is to stop Brexit and of course we are a party which is trying to do Brexit but hasn't achieved Brexit yet.

"THere are definitely some people who will want to send a message to Westminster and send a message to probably both the major parties, who stood on the manifesto to leave the European Union and respect a referendum, that they need to get on and do it.

"We do have three new parties. It's the first time we have had a couple of Labour councillors, the first time we have had, in my time, Green councillors on the district council and, of course, we have this new Local Alliance in Selsey as well.

"I am very hopeful that, from what I have seen of the district council, they always put the people in Chichester first.

"I am disappointed of course that we have lost some very good councillors who have worked very hard for their areas, and who are very upset that they lost their positions.

"I have always met with both the Conservative group and the other groups, so Independents, Lib Dems, and always had meetings with both and will continue to do so."

Urgent improvements are required by Ofsted CHILDREN'S services in West Sussex have been branded as 'inadequate' by an Ofsted inspection.

THe inspection took place over a three-week period in late February/ early March and looked at three areas.

THe areas are: the impact of leaders on social work practice with children and families, the experiences and progress of children who need help and protection and the experiences and progress of children in care and care leavers.

In all three areas inspectors found services to be inadequate and as a result the overall effectiveness was judged to be inadequate.

Responding to the report, council leader Louise Goldsmith said: "We take these findings extremely seriously.

"At present, we are letting down children and families who need our help most. It is unacceptable - we are very sorry and bitterly disappointed.

"At the end of last year, we were aware services were fragile and announced a £5million investment programme to make urgent improvements.

"THat work is still underway but as the inspectors have found, we are a long way from delivering the services vulnerable children and families of West Sussex deserve.

"I want to reassure residents that we will continue to do everything that is necessary to change our services for the better.

"THe voices of our children need to be central to everything we do.

And to that end I have already made significant changes to the Corporate Parenting Panel."

Ofsted did acknowledge progress had been made in some areas. THe support from the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub - which deals with children when they first come into contact with the council - is working well, and the care leaver’s service and the dedicated service for complex adolescents are starting to have a positive impact.

THe report highlights 12 areas for improvement, including the infrastructure and services to support good quality social work practice, planning for permanent placements for children, staff recruitment and retention and active engagement with partners.

County council chief executive Nathan Elvery said: “Improving outcomes for the most vulnerable children in West Sussex is the council’s top priority.

THe council’s improvement plan aims to deliver stability for our social care workforce, a staff training programme to address practice improvements and a recruitment and retention programme so that social worker caseloads can be reduced.

Petrol station catches fire

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PETROL station in Fontwell remained closed today after being engulfed by a blaze.

THe Shell business just off the A27 is set to be shut for some time after the fire on Monday.

No-one was injured by the fire but nearby premises were evacuated by the police as a precaution.

Eyewitness Jason Green, who lives in Arundel Road, in close proximity to the garage, said: "My family and I were just finishing breakfast when we heard a small bang.

"I dismissed this as one of the local vehicle recovery lorries, bumping over

the speed humps, as they do. But the second band was much, much louder.

"You could feel it through the floor of the house. We decided to investigate so we went outside and saw huge plumes of black smoke, and the undeniable smell of burning rubber.

"We walked down to see what was going on. THe emergency services were on site within minutes and we continued to watch the fire service attach to the hydrant and start soaking the flames and the police cordoned off the immediate area.

"THe garage forecourt has been destroyed by the heat and most of the roof structure buckled."

THe first reports of the blaze were received at at 9.31am on Monday.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service

received multiple calls to say a campervan was on fire on the forecourt of the Shell garage in Fontwell.

At about 10.30am a spokesman said: "We are currently in attendance at a fire at a petrol station in Fontwell off the A27.

"Police also at the scene. Please avoid the area."

"THree pumps were mobilised along with a water carrier. Six breathing apparatus, two jets and one foam jet were used to extinguish the fire.

A police cordon was set up and a number of nearby businesses and properties were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

"THe incident was handed over to police and we left the scene at around 2pm."

Rail users could face delays with work over the autumn

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TRAIN passengers in Chichester have been urged to plan ahead of a major rail closure later this year.

A multi-million pound upgrade will see the West Coastway line shut during this October and November.

THe work will affect the route between Barnham, Chichester and Havant.

THe section will closed for nine days over the autumn half-term holiday from October 26 to November 3 and the following three weekends.

THis is to allow Network Rail to lay 2.3km of new track and replace outdated equipment at Basin Road, Stockbridge Road, Brook Lane and Bosham level crossings with new and more reliable technology.

THis will improve journeys for passengers and motorists who drive over the crossings. Work will also take place at stations on that section of the route.

Trevor Tupper, secretary of the West Sussex Rail Users Association, said: "I know the schools and college around Chichester are aware of this.

"THere is never a good time to do this type of work but a half-term holiday is as good as any. Most of the passengers in the week coming from the west are students, though there are some commuters, of course.

"If Southern do what they did when the

Brighton to THree Bridges line was closed during the February half-term, with a fleet of buses, I don't think there will be too much of a problem. THe real problem will be at weekends because Chichester will lose all its trains then for three weekends.

"But, even then, if Southern do what they do for the usual weekend closures, with fast and slow buses to Portsmouth, passengers should not have more than 20 minutes added to their journeys."

THe closures will begin on October 26 and 27 with the line between Barnham and Havant. On weekdays from October 28 to November 1, buses will replace trains from Chichester to Havant.

THe Barnham-Havant line will be closed again on the following days: November 2 and 3, November 10 and 17 and November 30 and December 1.

John Halsall, Network Rail's south east route managing director, said the work would add to the more than £100m it had invested in the south coast railway in the past year.

"Passengers will still be able to travel to London, Brighton or Portsmouth, but may need to use a replacement bus and journeys will take longer.

"Following on from the successful THree Bridges to Brighton blockade, we will work closely with our colleagues at GTR (Southern) to put passengers first, ensuring people are fully aware of the impact on their journey and the alternative options available to them," he said.

City's charity shop sends a desperate plea for donations and gift aid funds A POPULAR charity shop in the city centre is urgently calling on the community's help.

THis May, the Age UK shop in Crane Street, Chichester, needs people's support to raise much needed funds to support the charity’s work with older people.

To do this, the shop is urging everyone in Chichester to donate their unwanted quality items and to ask the shop manager to sign them up to Gift Aid when they do so.

Gift Aid is a way for Age UK to make donations go further and in turn make later life better, as it increases the value of donations by 25 per cent.

Shop manager, Kathy Manouch, said: "All people need to do is fill in a simple Gift Aid form when they take their donations to the shop, which takes less than a minute.

"It is free to sign up and you only have to do it once. THe only requirement is that you are a UK taxpayer. Signing up to Gift Aid means that Age UK will receive an extra 25p from the government for every £1 raised from donations."

THe shop accepts quality donations such as clothing, accessories, household items, books and toys, all of which are sold on to be loved again.

Non-stop jazz raises US cash

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A NON-STOP 24-hour jazz concert has been played by musicians from Chichester in aid of US schoolchildren living in deprived areas of Los Angeles.

THe day and night performance, hosted at the University of Chichester, helped raise money for Nevin Avenue Elementary, which has some of the lowest test scores in America.

More than 50 university students and staff joined musicians from the city’s community orchestra for the concert, which was live-streamed online.

Professor Laura Ritchie and head of jazz Nick Reynolds, from the university’s department of music, organised the event as part of an ongoing collaboration with the school to raise aspirations.

“Nevin Avenue have some wonderfullygifted students but is situated in a tough area of Los Angeles, and they don’t have a lot of opportunities,” said Prof Ritchie, who herself had played for more than four hours.

“We’re still accepting donations we hope to raise money to develop a multimedia room at the school to give students a chance to integrate music into learning in ways they’ve never before experienced.”

Chichester Cathedral site was the first in Europe to host a peregrine webcam to provide an intimate view of peregrines raising their young.

Peregrines were seen on the tower in the mid 1990s and may well have been visiting for many hundreds of years before.

THey have been very successful nesting on the cathedral and have fledged more than 60 chicks since the first in 2001.

THe series of open days are being held at weekends.

THE FIRST three of four eggs have officially hatched at Chichester Cathedral.

THe peregrines, which nest at the cathedral every year, have become proud parents just days after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

THe first egg hatched on Wednesday morning and by THursday morning there were three chicks spotted among mum and dad in the nesting box at the Cathedral.

Chichester Cathedral is currently running open days at the weekends with David Shaw Wildlife.

From the cafe, people are able to watch a live webcam view of the nesting site in the spire.

Since early January, the male and female have been spotted on a number of occasions and it looks like the birds are settling in well and a baby chick hatched just a few days ago.

Drummer Will Moore, a first-year music student at the University, started at 8am and played on-and-off for more than six hours.

He said: “THis was a fantastic open event, and it was great to jam with other musicians of all levels, whether students, lecturers, or people from our community.

“We improvised over the top of Herbie Hancock but every 30 minutes one of us would do their own solo, which we all played around - hopefully we’ll raise lots of money.”

THe charity concert was the first of its kind to be recorded live online using the university’s lecture-capture software.

Chichester resident David Dorning plays saxophone with the city’s community orchestra, which is also led

by Prof Ritchie.

He said: “It’s great that Chichester has come together to do a good thing.

“It’s not often that we get the chance to play alongside the students, which itself was really rewarding, and it was interesting to see their interpretations of jazz.”

Dementia Hub reaches 1st birthday

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A CHARITY hub in Tangmere celebrated its first birthday on Wednesday with a special party.

Sage House, run by Dementia Support, officially turned a year old and invited users of the services and their families and carers to celebrate.

To mark the special anniversary, the charity launched a new £1 million appeal to help fund vital ‘Wayfinders’ to reduce loneliness, give the best quality care, provide hope and support for the whole family affected by dementia.

Every three minutes somebody will develop dementia. THere are 15,000 people living with dementia in West Sussex, with 5,500 in the Post area, but currently the charity can reach only 10 per cent.

THe Wayfinder Appeal has been launched to fund more personal advisors and life-changing dementia support services, to enable the charity to reach more families. As a local charity, Dementia Support relies on donations and the generosity of the public.

“A diagnosis of dementia is devastating for most people," said Dementia Support chief executive Sally Tabner.

"At Dementia Support, we are here for people when they receive that news. We will help people living with dementia and their families throughout their dementia journey, and our Wayfinders are a crucial part of that journey.

THey provide essential guidance and emotional support in helping people to live well with dementia."

During the birthday celebrations, a bakeoff was held with Town Crier, Richard Plowman, and singer, Dawn Gracie, judging the competition.

Dawn said: "I love cake and it was a difficult decision to make but we were very impressed with the creativity."

Cake number three, baked by Anne-Marie (daughter and carer of a user of the daybreaks service) won the competition, a rainbow sponge cake with forgetme-not decorations.

Dawn described her love for singing as something she didn't feel: "I started my vintage entertaining in 2012 and when I began singing in nursing homes at a friend's request and although my business has developed, all these years I still sing in care homes.

"I became a dementia friend and because I sing 50s and 60s it's a natural place to be because musical memory is so important.

"I get the sadness and the pleasure all at once to see people who are living with dementia coming alive with music. It can be very complex.

"My job as an entertainer is to be in that moment and give that person the pleasure for just that time. I wouldn't do it if I didn't love it."

Mr Plowman said: "Sage House is a truly amazing building. It's unique in all of the country and the way in which it can deal with the whole range of things.

You can come in here, be assessed and use the wonderful facilities, it is just amazing.

"I am so pleased to be involved with it and we have had such fun today, especially with Dawn and judging the cakes!"

Maximum interest is seen at the museum's miniature model show

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk VISITORS from all around attended a special model show at the city's aviation museum.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, in association with Tangmere Sector Modellers IPMS, hosted a Scale Model Show on Saturday.

Building on last year’s successful first scale model show at the museum, this year’s show was bigger and better, with over 20 scale model clubs and traders displaying at the event.

In comparison, last year’s first show was modest, with ten model clubs exhibiting and three traders selling models. However, it proved to be a great success, with exhibitors located between aircraft in the museum’s main hangar.

Building on last year, the Sector Modellers invited 20 clubs and four traders to take part, which required the museum to utilise all the museum halls and hangars to accommodate them.

Exhibitors accepted invitations from Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex and London, drawn to the show by its growing reputation as being one of the best organised in southern England.

An exhibition of particular interest to the museum was the display by the Harrier Special Interest Club of Hawker

Harrier V/STOL jump jet aircraft models.

THe museum is currently running an exhibition on Harriers in the 1969 Air Race, which has been extended until the end of July.

On Saturday, the show opened its doors at 10am and during the day over 500 visitors were able to marvel at the intricate detail of the fantastic models and of the skills involved in making them.

THose looking for models and modelling equipment to buy were well catered for and those seeking refreshments had to look no further than the outside BBQ run by the museum’s NAAFI tea room.

THe Sector Modellers organised an impressive raffle with numerous plastic models as prizes, donated by model manufacturing companies, some of which were valued at between £50 and £100.

New this year was an open scale model competition staged as part of the show. Numerous models made by both adults and children were submitted and the standard was so high that difficult decisions had to be made by the independent panel of judges.

Prizes were awarded for different categories with Phil Cowley, a member of the Tangmere Sector Modellers, winning the gold medal in the civilian vehicle category and the award of ‘champion of

the show’.

Richard Spreckley, of Tangmere Sector Modellers IPMS, said: "Following on from the success of the inaugural show in 2018, visitors this year saw against the backdrop of this iconic Battle of Britain airfield and museum an expanded event ,with 17 models clubs from around the region, one national special interest group (Harrier SIG) five traders, access to the whole museum, BBQ, open cockpits and flight simulators.

"THere was also the first ever open competition at the event which saw 120 entries in nine different classes. THe lead judge, Mr Richard Francis, commented that the quality of the entries was on a par with larger national competitions.

"THe champion 'best in show' was awarded to Mr Phil Cowley for his Aston Martin Ulster.

"THere were also special awards for the Bill Leadbetter Memorial Trophy 'best in show' American military aircraft and Salisbury IPMS walked away with the M.A.N Models trophy for best in show club display."

THe museum saw record numbers of visitors and have invited their resident model club to start planning for the third show which will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2020.

` Audio toilets CHICHESTER Festival THeatre has joined a growing list of public buildings fitting the revolutionary RoomMate in two of its toilet facilities.

THe RoomMate provides an audio description of ‘away from home’ toilets for visually impaired visitors who would normally rely on a carer.

If audio guidance is required, a wave of the hand over the unit triggers a detailed explanation of the room.

Ben Geering, house manager at the theatre, explained: "We want everyone who visits the theatre to have an enjoyable and welcoming experience, whatever their individual needs.

"We hope that this will provide a valuable extension to our current provision for people with visual impairments."

` Gardening club

MEMBERS of the Donnington Gardening Club and their visitors were treated to a return visit by Alan Sargent.

Alan is renowned for his work with Chelsea Flower Show gardens and internationally accepted as top of his class in garden design and construction for those who can afford the odd million or two.

His talk kept the audience enthralled, hearing about the rather particular, if not odd, requirements of his clients. He was recently asked to go to Russia to act as judge in a national garden design competition.

THe club holds its plant sale tomorrow (Saturday) at 2pm at Donnington Parish Hall.

Revive, recycle and restore

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ENVIRONMENTAL and upcycle lovers were in for a treat when they visited THe Good Life show at the Weald and Downland Living Museum over the bank holiday.

THe museum's spring show had plenty to do for all ages, including talks, demonstrations and activities helping visitors learn how to upcycle, make meals with zero waste or even experience a soundbath.

Children had the opportunity to have a go at juggling balls, spinning plates, wooden stilts and other circus skills as well as face painting, children's yoga and forest art.

THe Good Life show wouldn't have been complete without cookery theatre guests showing visitors how to save money, reduce waste and eat healthy.

Chefs included Giles THompson, from the Earl of March pub in Lavant, who gave a demonstration on both Sunday and Monday cooking up his seasonal surprise, making use of nature's food larder.

Upcycling demonstrations were made

by TV's Salvage Sister, Charis Williams, who told visitors about her career, how she got into the industry and what upcycling on TV is really like.

She also held demonstrations where she showed her audience tricks and tips on how to make upcycled lamps and how to take pallets apart and make a garden trough.

far. We met many people from Worthing and Portsmouth and far beyond, who know and love Centurion Way, yet were unaware of the looming threat.

"THe only downside was a serious air quality problem caused by the ice cream van adjacent to our stall - with its diesel engine running continuously. I hope that future events can provide a cleaner alternative."

Conservatives lose majority at elections

THe unprecedented results left the previously dominant party on just 18 seats, fewer than half of its previous

number, and seven ahead of the Liberal Democrats on 11 who previously held just five.

THe result does include the reduction in councillors from 48 to 36 following the boundary review but will still come as a massive blow to the Tory party.

THe final line-up of councillors also saw one Independent and two Local Alliance members, compared with four

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Cllr Adrian Moss said: "We are delighted. We have got a hung council.

"It's 18 all. THe council is in no overall control and I think obviously we are going to be joined by Greens, Labour and Independent members and I think that is really good for Chichester and the whole district.

"THe Liberal Democrats will talk to these parties and make sure we create what is right for the district.

"I think we got our targets. THe seats that we targeted, we got. We are very pleased that we got all of our targets.

"THere are a couple of seats which we didn't get which were very, very close but I think that was always going to be the case.

"Overall, I think we ran a really professional campaign, with a fantastic team doing the social media. We talked to hundreds of people on the doorstep and I think we got our message across.

"We want to focus on environmental issues. We want to work hard to make sure that Chichester flourishes by working with BID and other organisations to make sure that we attract people to

"We need to do something exciting with Southern Gateway and we must not let the A27 be forgotten about. We need to find a solution.

"One of the key things is we need to give the district council back to the residents so they feel really engaged in what the council are doing so they can see and understand that we want them to feel part of a new and exciting time in the district.

"We can deliver something different and that's really important."

Former leader of the district council, and re-elected Tory councillor, Tony Dignum, said he was feeling relieved and was looking forward to working with the new council.

He said: "We have a lot to do. We have

the Local Plan, we have work to do on conservation areas and work on the waste plan.

"We have a lot of work to do in terms of the community.

"We will continue with our policies to help those most in need, including the homeless."

Liberal Democrat, Cllr Dr Kate O'Kelly,had a triumphant win in the Harting ward, with 968 votes, compared with Conservative candidate, Lawrence Abel, on 313.

She said of the result: "I am delighted to be elected and really excited to be getting involved with the ward and residents and being responsive to them.

"I won a by-election a year ago and I have worked really hard in the area and I am delighted with the result."

Liberal Democrats take control of city council

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk LIBERAL Democrat councillor, Richard Plowman was confirmed as the new mayor of Chichester on Wednesday evening.

At a council-in-committee meeting at the Chichester City Council it was confirmed the new mayor would be Cllr Richard Plowman and Cllr John Hughes was confirmed as deputy mayor. THe bailiff was announced as Cllr Julian Joy. Conservatives lost a staggering 11 seats on the city councils after THursday's election.

THe council of 20 members before the results saw the Tory party with 13 seats,

six Liberal Democrat councillors and just one Green member.

THe huge shake-up has seen the Tories left with only two seats while the Liberal Democrats have the majority of seats.

THe Chichester east ward had already seen two Labour candidates fight off the Tory party and win the seats, and speaking after those results, district and city councillor, Jane Kilby, said she had no idea how the results would fall for the city council.

She said: "I wouldn't like to predict.

THere is no way I can predict what would happen for the city council."

Liberal Democrat, Cllr Richard Plowman, retained his seats on both the district and city councils.

He said: "In 2003, when I first became

THe leader of Chichester District Council Tony Dignum, has announced he is standing down.

Cllr Dignum was re-elected as a Conservative member for Chichester North on Friday, has been a cabinet member for seven years and leader for four.

He said: "Leading the council with no overall control requires a new approach best delivered by someone else.

"I am older than other colleagues, so it is probably a good time to reduce my work load.

"THe Conservatives were obviously disappointed by the city council results which very much mirrored what happened in the same wards in the district elections.

"We faced public anger at the Government's failure to secure its primary purpose of a Brexit deal.

"THis government failure was highlighted for everyone by the Euro election polling cards we all received a few days earlier.

"In addition, there were very effective campaigns by the Greens in south ward and Labour in east ward.

"THese campaigns prevented the

flicker brightly before fading, has a rather jarring New York accent at first but the audience warms to her even quicker than Lewis' friends.

Despite the subject matter, there is much natural humour between the characters, especially Lewis' brother, Warnie - a fine, warm performance by Andrew Havill - and, among others in the outstanding supporting cast, Timothy Watson is delightfully sharp.

As to be expected at Chichester, the staging is highly effective, including references to Narnia but the whole play is a superlative production, encapsulating a moving evocation of life, love and inevitable loss.

IN Us, the film opens in 1986 in an amusement park in California.

In Yuli, superstar Cuban ballet dancer and choreographer Carlos Acosta takes us through his life in unusual style in this mix of drama and dance, fiction and reality. Yuli (the nickname given to him by his father) transforms himself over the decades to top dancer, the film rooted in Acosta’s mission to understand his life in his chosen art form.

Isolani tells the story of a young mother from Glasgow who witnesses a murder and is forced to act as witness. But she must protect her young son.

Jellyfish, a further film with life-changing events, follows Sarah, a young carer who discovers an unlikely talent for stand-up comedy. Can Sarah do both or must

she give up one for the other? Come on, Sarah!

Judi Dench fans will welcome her latest film, Red Joan, a fictionalised account of the case of Melita Norwood, the so-called “granny spy” who was arrested in the 1990s for sharing nuclear secrets with the KGB 50 years earlier.

Even those who revelled in The Favourite’s previous screenings might grab another chance to see Oscar-winning performances by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. The film charts the war years during the reign of Queen Anne who is clearly not coping either privately or as monarch. A wicked delight! Admire, too, its style, costume design, cinematography.

Despite the hard efforts of Marvel’s finest heroes, the Mad Titan succeeded in his plan to rid the universe of half of its population and the likes of Black Panther, Groot, Spider-Man, and others were turned to dust by Thanos’ snap. Where there are still heroes, there is still hope. This time, Iron Man and Captain America will need to put their differences aside for good if they’re to bring back their friends and family. Luckily, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, and Captain Marvel arrive to tip the balance. Explicit details about the movie’s plot are understandably scarce but we know Tony Stark is left adrift in space while the disillusioned heroes back on Earth put their final plan into action. Avengers: Endgame will most certainly be the last time we see many of these familiar faces, to let’s hope the Russo brothers send them off in style.

Between being bullied at school, put upon by her overbearing boss at the local arcade and having to look after her younger brother, sister and manicdepressive mother, life isn't easy for Sarah Taylor (Liv Hill). However, when Sarah's drama teacher channels her ferocious and volatile energies in to a stand-up comedy routine for the graduation showcase, Sarah discovers that she may have a hidden talent.

As her love for comedy grows and the showcase draws nearer, the delicate balance in her life becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. Little by little, the walls start to close in, ultimately forcing her to choose between her responsibilities as a carer and her newfound passion for comedy. Hill has genuinely funny bones and her outstanding talent shines through.

Leo, who celebrates his birthday during the second UK leg of the tour, has had an extensive career in the music industry dating from the mid-Sixties, starting out with David Courtney and Adam Faith – and he wanted to be a graphic designer.

Now performing in what will be his sixth decade as a musician, Leo has racked up 11 UK Top Ten

and four US Top Ten and awards including a Grammy, in 1977, for You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.

Add to that appearances on THe Muppet Show, THe Wiggles (DVD), Celebrity Big Brother UK and a mention on THe Simpsons, then you can safely assume it’s been a different, varied, and an enjoyable career to say the least.

CHESS players are being sought in the city to join and help with running new clubs in Chichester and the surrounding areas.

For the past three years, Jake Fishman and his team have been running the chess school in London, Mindful Chess.

THey are now working to give students in other cities the same opportunities with their objective to provide weekly chess lessons that nurture not just great chess players, but great thinkers, innovators and strategists. Jake believes more than ever it is fundamental to encourage students to be excellent communicators, critical-thinkers and, importantly, problemsolvers.

Mindful Chess was founded by Jake whose love for chess stemmed from a young age. After working with Scholastic Chess in Hong Kong, Jake returned to the UK to set up Mindful Chess.

He has collaborated with a team of chess enthusiasts to create a unique and dynamic approach to chess education.

THe group take a unique approach to teaching the game where they combine traditional teaching techniques with technology to track each students progress and tailor their teaching accordingly. THe most fundamental ethos of their teaching is that the learning experience should be a fun dynamic one that works to benefit each student within the class.

Students have access to 18 chapters of chess training excellence, team coaching, progress reviews, game analysis and a highly supportive team of teachers.

A NEW campaign in England has been created to raise awareness of organ donation law change, the options and how to register a decision.

With only 37 per cent of over 16s in England currently aware that the law is changing, NHS Blood and Transplant has launched the year-long national campaign, ‘Pass it on’, to increase awareness and understanding of the organ donation law change, which comes into place next year, across England.

Currently in West Sussex, there are 54 people waiting for a transplant and in the past two years, eight have died waiting From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered as having agreed to donate their own organs when they die unless they record a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups.

THose excluded will be people under 18, people who lack the capacity to understand the change and people who have lived in England for less than 12 months before their death

or who are not living here voluntarily.

THe campaign, ‘Pass it on’ aims to clearly communicate that the law is changing and the choices available, as well as encouraging people to make a decision and share this with their family.

Anthony Clarkson, director of organ donation and transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant, says: “Organ donation is, and always will be, a precious gift.

Although the law is changing, it will still be the generosity of individual donors and their families who decide at the most difficult time to support organ donation, which will ensure more transplants can happen and more lives can be saved.

“We hope that by increasing awareness and understanding of organ donation, we can inspire more individuals and families to agree to donation and allow many more lives to be saved.”

Dear Sir, Can your readers explain to me how the massive swing away from the two main parties in the council elections is being read as support for Brexit?

No one likes shambolic unresolution, but the parties that have benefited from the voting (Lib Dems, Greens etc) have consistently said that we are all better off financially and in terms of national security, from membership of the EU. A week is a long time in politics, so how can the leaders of the two main parties cling to their delusional belief that people still want what was on offer three years ago?

In my view, they are using the leave view from three years ago to bolster their own chances of either maintaining or having power. Shame on them. THankfully, that strategy has backfired in the local elections. Let’s make sure it continues to leave us cold in the European elections.

EIGHT children from Great Ballard School have been selected to join the Prep School Pumas and Prep School Lions South East squads for the Gothia Cup in Sweden during July.

THe Gothia World Cup is the most prestigious youth football tournament in the world, with over 80 countries represented.

Great Ballard is delighted to have eight promising young players taking part. THis year, Great Ballard has a group of boys and girls that have made the squad: Fraser J, Sam T and Charlie S in the U12s, Hayden T, Jack Mc and Charlie M in the U11s for the boys’ squads, Jasmine M, and Olivia Mc in the U11s girls’ squad.

Headmaster Richard Evans said: “We are very proud of these children. Being chosen for the squad is a great opportunity to improve their football but also to experience the excitement of taking part in an international tournament.

"Football is an up and coming sport here at Great Ballard and I am especially pleased that two of our girls have also been chosen this year. We have been working with Chelsea Football Club to improve football for both boys and girls here and it is proving a popular choice of sport all round."

NATIONAL charity Action on Hearing Loss has marked Deaf Awareness Week 2019 (May 6-12) by encouraging people in West Sussex to learn more about deafness and how they can be deaf aware.

Its ‘Don’t be a Donut, Be Deaf Aware’ campaign highlighted the awkward things people say to those living with deafness and hearing loss, shining a light on the many misconceptions some people have.

THe charity shared numerous personal stories from supporters throughout the week, including the one testing a man’s disability by asking to ‘try on’ his hearing aid and an airport insisting that a deaf woman must use a wheelchair. THe campaign's aim was to encourage those with all levels of deafness and hearing loss to join the conversation by sharing

their own stories about the awkward things that have been said to them about their condition - ultimately highlighting why greater deaf awareness is so important.

Mark Atkinson, chief executive at Action on Hearing Loss, said: “THese stories highlight the fact that despite there being 11 million people in the UK with various levels of hearing loss, there is still a widespread lack of awareness among the general public about hearing conditions and the people who live with them.

“By highlighting these misconceptions, we would like encourage people to reconsider their own attitudes and preconceptions and no longer be the ‘donut’ in the room.”

Dear Editor Following recent letters about unpleasant behaviour by local young people, my experience last Monday evening was quite different.

I am 82 and had a serious fall in Chapel Street at 10.30pm while walking home with my partner, who is also elderly. We were immediately surrounded by young people who cared for and comforted us both. In particular, one young man who kept contact with ambulance control, and the four young women who stayed with me, covered me with their coats despite there being quite a lot of blood, held my hand and kept talking to me while we waited for an ambulance.

When we were told an ambulance could not come at once they assured us they would not leave us however long it took.

While we waited, they fetched some blankets and the staff of Wetherspoons brought out a pile of napkins for my head and teas and coffees for everyone.

Although feeling a little bruised and battered, this was an altogether heartwarming experience and reaffirmed to me that the general goodness and kindness of people is still very much present in the younger generation.

The history of Bishop Luffa School - Part two

f Students dressed up for charity week THIS week’s article continues to explore the history of Bishop Luffa School from the 1980s.

Major changes occurred at the school in the 1980s, not least with the retirement in 1981 of head teacher Mr Leslie Bartlett, who had been with the school from the outset.

THe decade also saw significant changes to the delivery of teaching, including the introduction of a system which integrated primary and secondary schools from Year 1 through to Year 13. A national curriculum was introduced and O levels and CSE were replaced by GCSEs. At the same time, the school introduced a two-week timetable.

On Sunday, November 14, 2004, disaster struck the school as vandals wrecked the school’s sports hall by flooding the changing rooms and setting fire to the building.

Firefighters were called onto the scene shortly after 2am. THere was extensive smoke damage to the school building.

Construction of a new drama studio began in August, 2006, and was completed in February, 2007. THis was to be the start of a significant creative arts centre for the school.

Further improvements to the school's facilities have included the construction of a multi-use games area, the extension of the school’s sports hall and the remodelling and updating of one of the former blocks of classrooms named K Block.

Bishop Luffa has a long record of charitable fundraising and each house has its own nominated charities which are supported through fundraising activities. Fundraising events are organised throughout the year, including the school’s annual charity week, which is organised by the sixth form. THe week includes a non-uniform (and fancy dress) day as one of its highpoints.

On THursday, March 24, 2011, the school broke the Guinness World Record for the World’s largest human smiley, as part of charity week events in support of the sixth form charities ‘Grassroots’ and ‘Hope and Homes’. THe previous record of 551 people was more than doubled, with an astonishing 1,349 people.

Sadly, the record didn’t last long and was broken just a few months later in July by an Indian University with 3,737 people.

THe school’s 50th anniversary in 2013 was celebrated with a jubilee day on Saturday, October 5. Activities included a service in the cathedral, lunch in the Bartlett Hall, displays, presentations and other entertainment at the school as well as an opportunity for past students to reunite. THe day culminated in an evening BBQ, dancing and live bands.

In 2017, the school finished 18 months of renovation work which involved remodelling one of the old buildings. THe site underwent considerable development and resulted a newly updated humanities block and repositioning the main reception. On Monday, April 24, 2017, the school's new reception opened.

By the time of the school’s 55th anniversary year in 2018 there had been only four head

teachers, John Ashwin, who succeeded the school’s first head, Leslie Bartlett, Nick Taunt,who retired after 18 years of service and the current head teacher, Austen Hindman.

Today, the school houses have grown in number from four to eight, but all remain named after former Bishops of Chichester.

Ridgeway, Wilson and Burrows all remain while Andrewes, King, Otter, Sherborne and Story complete the octuplet.

At present, the school is an outstanding Ofsted-rated school. THe school’s Christian values remain at its core to this day, and is epitomised by their motto ‘Always our best because everyone matters’.

Remap is a national charity with 900 active members which helps disabled people lead more independent lives by designing, making and adapting devices, where none exist commercially, to suit the client’s needs. As a Remap volunteer you will meet the disabled people they help, often with an occupational therapist who can provide clinical input. Your job is to solve whatever practical challenge they throw at you, designing and then making a special piece of equipment that will help them become more independent. You will need somewhere to work independently on your projects. Some of the volunteers have their own workshop, others use community facilities or have a workbench and tools in the garage. You will also need to have the means to travel to meet clients locally. However you like to work, they would be pleased to hear from you.

Group Helper – Girlguiding Bognor Regis West

Girlguiding UK, as part of a worldwide movement, enables girls and young women to fulfil their potential to take an active and responsible role in society through its distinctive, stimulating and enjoyable programme of activities delivered by trained volunteer leaders. Adults are needed that are able to attend and help with Rainbow meetings (girls 5-7 years), Brownie meetings (girls 7-10 years) or Guide meetings (girls 10-14 years) on an occasional or regular basis. You might help with setting up activities, tidying away or helping the girls to take part in activities, either in their regular meeting hall or on excursions. You will work under the supervision and leadership of the groups trained leaders and will benefit from all the opportunities guiding offers its adults, as well as feeling good about helping them deliver guiding to the girls.

Youth Support Worker/Volunteer – Chichester Bell Tower Drop-in Centre

Volunteers are required to go on rota once every week/every 2 weeks to attend the Chichester Bell Tower Drop-in sessions; activities might include engaging with young people via conversation/gaming/help with homework, serving snacks and keeping the area tidy. You must be over-18, have good communication skills (particularly with young people) and willing to have a DBS check done. You will be required to volunteer for 2 to 4 hours (sessions are split into 2 hour slots) a week/every 2 weeks.

Voluntary Shop Assistant – Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre

The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre takes in unwanted, abandoned or stray cats, kittens, rabbits and guinea pigs, and gives them a good quality of life until it is possible to find a loving, permanent home for them. Activities include: educating the public, neutering the animals, feeding and general care, and finding forever homes for the many animals in their care. They are looking for people to volunteer in their charity shops in West Wittering. Tasks will include: sorting and pricing clothes, keeping the shop tidy, working at the till, serving and helping customers. Ideal volunteers will have a personable manner, be able to use common sense and your own initiative and be reliable. The time commitment is flexible - part time or full time, some weekends and bank holidays.

Darts PDC Riley’s UK Open qualifier Rob Collins (Friary 'Z') teamed up with Gary Blackwood (Legends) and Daniel Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) to take the Bognor Benevolent League Blind Trebles Knockout crown.

Eighty four players took part in the competition, one of the best turnouts on record, with 13 former champions taking part. Collins and Blackwood were among them and used their experience to make it to the final with Robinson to face Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club), Dave Owens (Friary 'Z') & Mary-Jane Todd (BRSA Ravens).

Blackwood kicked things off with a ton.

Collins followed that with 140, already giving them a massive lead. On only Blackwood's third throw they were on their double, and he hit it on his third dart for a 21 dart leg.

Leg 2 saw a ton from Todd, but Collins replied with 140. Owens hit 82, but his next throw was 171, leaving 34. Robinson could only hit 78 to leave 108.

But both Hall and Todd missed the double, giving Collins a shot at 52, using only two darts to finish it off, ensuring they lifted the coveted crown.

Football A FOOTBALL fairytale come true that’s how Chichester College’s Female Football Academy’s rise to golden glory at this year’s AoC Sport National Championships has been described.

THe Academy, which is only in its second year, saw off competition from eight other college sides – many of them elite category sides with links to THe FA Women’s Super League - to claim victory and be crowned national champions.

Team captain Gracie White, 18, said: “It is unbelievable. THe whole weekend was incredible and to wake up as champions is an amazing feeling for all of us. “Some of the other teams had international players so we knew it was going to be tough. I don’t think any of us could have dreamed that we were going to come away with the championship. “I just think the reason we won was down to the raw passion, determination and drive that we showed. I think we really wanted it and the whole team was buzzing – we kept each other going.�

Having excelled at the regional stage of the competition back in the autumn, the Chichester team was undefeated in the finals (six wins and two draws), to take a nail-biting victory over Bristol Academy for the gold medal.

Bognor and Priory fall to defeats BOGNOR and Chichester Priory Park will both be looking to bounce back from opening day defeats as the Sussex Cricket season continues.

THe Division Two rivals sit second and third bottom of the standings respectively after losing last weekend.

Bognor, who were lost by 34 runs to Haywards Heath, head to Burgess Hill tomorrow while Chi will play Lindfield (both 12.30pm).

Bognor skipper Ryan Maskell will be seeking a much-improved performance with the bat after his attack, led by Scott Bingham (3-35) restricted Heath to 166-5 in their 45 overs.

In reply, the hosts struggled with only Mikey Harris (23) and Jim Fallick (36) reaching double figures in their total of 132 all out.

Chi, meanwhile, lost by 52 runs to Burgess Hill at Goodwood as the visitors posted 229-4.

Opener Peter Lamb (36) helped Priory get off to a good start. But, after reaching 76-1, Chi collapsed and eventually came up well short of their target.

In Sussex Premier Division Middleton CC skipper Sean Heather was the star, smashing a century in their eight-wicket victory over

THree Bridges.

After reducing the hosts to 277-7 in their 50 overs (Charlie Terry 2-52), Heather set about chasing down the score.

Even the loss of fellow opener Harry Hovey for a golden duck and rain reducing the target to 260 from 47 overs did not halt the skipper in his stride as he hit an unbeaten 139 from 137 balls.

He was supported by Ben Ferbrache (63*) in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 158 as Middleton reached the score with more than six overs to spare.

Next up is a home match against East Grinstead tomorrow (11.30am), who lost their opener in a rain-affected match against Preston Nomads.

In Division THree West Pagham welcome Stirlands to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (12.30pm) looking to capitalise on a comfortable opening day win over Littlehampton, Clapham and Patching.

Skipper Stuart Hanks had Nick Smith to thank for a fine all round effort. After taking 4-16 with the ball, he then smashed an unbeaten 55 as Pagham chased down the total of 169 all out with six wickets to spare.

GB call ups for young Falcons CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club started the season flying with three of their squad receiving GB honours.

THe Falcons’ first game of the season was a tough challenge as they took on Itchen Knicks, last year’s league champions.

Chichester came out all guns blazing by smashing ten runs straight onto the board in the first inning, only to be matched by ten of the Knicks’ own.

From that point on, the score was never more than three runs apart as both sides battled hard and kept tight defence for the remainder of the game.

After six innings the game was still tied and the seventh in the failing light saw the Knicks just edge ahead to finally win the game 23-20.

THe following Saturday saw three Chichester youngsters travel to GB U18s trials in Farnham Park, Buckinghamshire.

Finley Macknay, Oliver THornhill and Owen Randell were put through their paces in practice and fastpitch league games, where they teamed up

with Falcons coach Olly Howley under the watchful eye of team manager Ian Tomlin.

At the end of the day, it was announced all three had made the grade and Finley, Oliver and Owen can now join up with their GB team-mates while looking forward to enjoying some international softball experience.

THey join Olly Howley and Amy Morris in a growing gang of five youngsters from Chichester now in the GB softball programme.

Back in the city, the Falcons seniors squad played out the Solent League Firstball tournament, where they took on 13 teams from the local league and beyond.

Despite an early loss to Solent Sluggers, Chichester won all of their remaining games against Spitfires, Bracknell, Sharks, Brewers and Brighton Beachcombers to take the tournament shield trophy.

THe Falcons squad included four players who have recently graduated out of the juniors section – a positive sign of things to come for softball in Chichester.

SUSSEX jockey Jason Watson has declared his love for Goodwood after landing yet another winner on Opening Saturday at the South Downs course.

THe Brighton-born rider maintained his good rapport with his local track when successful on Dominus for Brian Meehan in THe Sussex Roof Garden Novice Stakes.

THe 9/4 shot quickened with two furlongs to go and just about edged out 6/5 favourite Qutob to land the race.

It was yet another successful homecoming for Watson who was victorious in the Stewards’ Cup at the Qatar Goodwood Festival in 2018.

He said: "I have a close affinity with the track, it’s one of my favourite racecourses to ride and a real family day out for me."

It was one of a number of exciting races the crowd of more than 10,000 enjoyed at the track.

THe eight-race card commenced with THe Double Trigger Handicap Stakes, where the local challenge looked strong with the favourite Cristal Spirit trained in Chiddingfold

by George Baker and bred by Meon Valley.

However, it was Horsham trainer, Gary

Moore, whose Rydan landed the race, held up in midfield, he travelled strongly into the home straight before asserting inside the final furlong to beat long-time leader Berrahri.

THe two Listed contests attracted highquality fields.

THe first, THe Unibet EBF Daisy Warwick Stakes, provided a second win in the race for John Gosden when Enbihaar prevailed.

In a race run to suit, the lightly raced 11-4 shot finished strongly under Dane O’Neil to beat favourite Klassique, with the two fillies pulling a convincing 4½ lengths clear of the field.

THe second, the Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes, saw the William Haggas trained Awesometank bounce back to form following a below-par run at the end of last season.

THe next event at the track is the May Festival which takes place from May 23-25.

THe card features a range of point to point races which are often used as significant stepping stones for up and coming jockeys.

Rocks end 32 year wait for the Senior Cup

ROCKS boss Jack Pearce has insisted his future as manager is in the hands of his players after the club lifted the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in more than 30 years.

Bognor managed to edge out Burgess Hill 2-1 as Doug Tuck coolly slotted home in extra time to seal the win in front of a crowd of more than 1,200 at THe Amex.

After a difficult season which saw Rocks fall from playoff contention to finish 14th in the Bostik Premier, lifting some silverware brought some smiles to everyone involved in the club.

While Pearce dedicated the win to supporters, he admitted that thoughts were already turning to the next campaign.

With a season of rebuilding ahead, the veteran manager said he was looking forward to working with first team coach Robbie Blake to rebuild the squad.

Pearce said: "THe most important thing to me is listening to the players.

"THe response from them on Tuesday was magnificent and I will wait and see what it’s like with the ones we keep and the players we sign, they will decide my fate [as manager]."

With injuries forever an issue this campaign, Pearce was forced

to field an inexperienced side for the cup final.

Jimmy Wild gave the Rocks an early lead before the Hillains equalised before the break.

It remained this way until extra time when Tuck came off the bench to coolly slot home.

Pearce said: "Our form in the last month of the season has been relegation form so to get the effort was absolutely magnificent.

"In the first 20 minutes we played football as good as any this year creating three or four which we should have taken.

"I'm delighted for the players and the fans who have shown to be true supporters of this club."

For Pearce, too, it brought back memories of 1987 when he was in charge for the Rocks' last triumph in this competition.

He said: "It is 32 years since we last won it - I have done my stint and it is still a lovely feeling but I am so pleased for Robbie and Neil, the backroom staff and the players - I can’t say how hard they have all worked."

Rocks will now have six weeks off before returning to pre-season at the end of June.

THe first friendly of the new year has been confirmed with National South side Havant & Waterlooville visiting Nyewood Lane on July 10 (7.45pm).

City celebrate best ever year CHICHESTER City Ladies assistant manager Lee Hurrell has praised every member of the squad for helping propel the club to a record-breaking season.

THe club ended their campaign last weekend with a 2-2 draw away at Gillingham, with Laura Ingram and Kim Stenning getting the goals.

It means Chi, who have one of the smallest budgets in the league, ended the National Southern Premier season in third with 46 points - 18 more than the tally gained in 2017/18.

THrow in a Sussex Challenge Cup trophy alongside the highest finish ever in the league and it was no wonder that there were smiles all round at the end of their final game of the year.

For the Chi coaching staff, this success was all down to the work of the players.

Hurrell said: "When I sat down with [manager] Aaron Smith and Matt Wright in June last year to discuss joining Chi City, it was their plans and ambition for the coming season that sold me on the club.

"THe top four and a Sussex cup was it? I think we did all right!

"What a group of players to work with too, so much ability and personality in the group.

"From the first pre-season session to the final minute yesterday, they’ve worked so hard for everything that’s been achieved

this season."

Chi will be disappointed not to end their season with a victory on the north Kent coast.

After the Gills missed a penalty, it was Ingram who gave City the lead when she volleyed in a corner.

Chi couldn’t maintain the advantage after

the break as Maddison Chamney-Farrand scored directly from a corner before Breon Grant put the Blues ahead.

However, with less than 10 to go, playercoach Stenning scored the equaliser, dinking the ball over the onrushing Gills keeper. It ensured that Chi ended the season with a five-match unbeaten run.

WELL what an end to the season that was.

It's amazing personally to lift the Sussex Senior Cup trophy for the first time in 32 years for the club. But really it was a night for the fans.

THey were absolutely fantastic throughout the whole game and at stages all you could hear were our supporters singing.

When we had water breaks a few of the lads were commenting on the singing and it really did give us a lift.

THe whole squad are just so pleased that after a disappointing season we have been able to give them something to shout about.

Truth be told if we had taken our chances in the first 30 minutes we could have been four up just like the Brighton game. But being Bognor Regis Town we like to do things the difficult way.

Jimmy Wild missed one, Muitt missed one, Brad missed one - and because we missed a few chances then we started to perhaps stop doing the things that were making us successful.

We were trying to go straight in behind and run with the ball when we didn't need to and that let them back into it.

But as the game went on and players started to get more tired we started to take control.

THe introduction of Doug helped as he is important in any game where you want to play football.

He is probably the best ball player in the league - you just have to watch him to see that.

He will never be the most physical but he will calm things down, retain possession and start attacks.

And as we saw, he is good for a goal, keeping his head and just passing one into the back of the net to give us the 2-1 win.

I'm happy for him as he's been here a while and he deserved it.

THere were a few moments of concern, particularly when Chad went off as we knew

that as the game on went they would go direct and he was the best header of the ball we had.

But with me slotting into centre half, we managed the game well into the latter stages and we dealt with things quite well.

When the final whistle came there was just relief that we had got there in the end.

I was just so happy for the fans, the players, for Blakey and for Jack.

Jack does get some stick from the fans but he puts in so many hours for the club that it's good to thank him for everything he does.

Having said that, if I was offered 14th and the cup win at the start of the season then I'm not sure I would have taken it. As nice as it was to win the cup and have the whole experience of playing in that stadium we could have done so much more in the league.

I like to think that next season we will get to the playoffs and produce all round better performances at home and away. We need more consistency.

For me personally I have no intentions of leaving but you never know what happens in football.

I think the club needs to look at the players we want to keep and then make some new additions who can bring some experience and leadership with them.

Jack and Blakey know this and are already busy working on things behind the scenes.

I think it will be difficult to keep hold of some of our players, especially if they get better financial offers from elsewhere. We shall see.

It's time now to let the hair down, have a good few weeks off and have a nice holiday.

When it starts creeping round to June time I’ll be starting to go on a few runs before pre-season starts.

It's important to rest up physically and mentally so that I will be ready to go for the new season.

Beyhan took over the former Spanish restaurant El Castizo in St Pancras early in autumn last year and, after a lot of hard work in a complete refurbishment, including new kitchen equipment, custom-made furniture from Turkey and interior redecoration, opened the Mediterranean restaurant and tapas bar in November.

Spanish artefacts and murals adorn the refreshed walls and gentle guitar music adds to the laidback setting where Beyhan plans to hold regular Flamenco-type events when the restaurant is fully established.

Loyal patrons and friends from her Selsey restaurant of the same name, which she has run since 2015, filled the tables for the two launch evenings and since then word has gradually spread about the revival of an old favourite of the Chichester eating-out scene.

Although there is a menu of main courses and pasta dishes, including child-size portions, most people go to enjoy the choice of freshlymade tapas, a number of which have a Middle Eastern slant as well as traditional Spanish

A tapas banquet for four people at £19.50 per person is popular for groups with a selection across the menu but my husband and I, with help from Beyhan, settled in comfortable chairs, made our own choices from the vegetarian, meat and chicken, and fish and seafood sections, washed down with a house white pinot grigio and a lemonade.

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of 15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary

requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

But as Beyhan said: "Seeing is deceiving, tasting is believing." And De Levante is a worthy successor to the legacy of El Castizo.
