Council tackles the high street

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PACKAGE of support is being introduced by Chichester District Council to help support local retailers, as part of its commitment to support the high street.

A new events programme, a bid to the Government’s High Streets Fund, improved planning guidance, marketing training, enabling grants and a shopfront grant programme are all part of a package of support the council has started to deliver.

“We recently met with local retailers in Chichester to ask what support they wanted to see," said Cllr Tony Dignum, district council cabinet member for finance, growth and regeneration.

"What was interesting is that they felt an events and activity programme would really support their businesses and help bring the city to life.

"We were really pleased to tell them that this is something that we were already working on for the district. We understand how challenging it is for businesses in the current climate and we want to support them in whatever way we can.

"We have recently appointed an events officer, who is devising an event strategy for the district, which will hopefully attract more people into the city and our towns.

"Alongside this, we have been delivering marketing training to local retailers and issuing shopfront grants to help people further develop their

businesses. THis has already started to have an impact. We have also run a successful enabling grant programme for small businesses across the district and we will be relaunching it this summer.

"We also understand that we need to improve the signage and maps around the city and this is a top priority.

Chichester Business Improvement District (BID) has already employed a specialist who has reviewed the signage around the city and all partners are currently reviewing this.

"Along with our partners, we have already secured millions of pounds to support regeneration projects such as the Southern Gateway project and have also bid for funding from the High Streets Fund.

SUSSEX Police are investigating a series of seven distraction burglaries across West Sussex including Chichester.

Officers received a report of a breakin at a caravan in Havenwood caravan park, Arundel, on May 29. Two men were seen acting suspiciously in the area before they left in a black vehicle.

A further four reports of burglaries were received by police on the same day. THe first was at a property in Brookview South in Coldwaltham, near Pulborough, where a safe with identification documents inside was stolen.

THe second and third in Meadsway, Slindon and St James Road, Chichester, both reported men entering their properties pretending to be from a water board company. Nothing was reported as stolen from either property.

THe fourth was a break-in at a property in Ferring Lane, Worthing.

On May 30, police received a call from a woman in Manor Way, Henfield, to report three men entering her house while she was in the garden.

Soon after this report, another call was received regarding four men acting suspiciously in the Fairfield Court area in Cowfold and a safe being stolen from a property.

Detective Constable Jon Berisford said: “We believe all seven of these incidents are linked due to the similarities in circumstances.

“Each of the victims have been left shaken by this experience and support and advice is being provided.

“We are interesting in searching for the owners of a black vehicle with registration X504 UFC which we believe to be linked to each of the incidents.

“If you have information on any of these burglaries or the car in question then we would like to speak with you."

Anti-theft procedure protects city's bikes

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CYCLISTS who were in the city centre on Saturday were able to take advantage of an anti-theft procedure.

Police were at the Market Cross in Chichester to help cyclists protect their bicycles.

THe free, anti-theft tool marking event saw the police force on hand to give advice and carry out the procedure.

Similar schemes have been run recently by the police to help tradesmen protect expensive tools and equipment and they

joined forces with Covers in March to help.

Each anti-theft kit has a unique dot DNA system in it, which, if you shine under a torch you can see where it is marked and under a microscope, you can see all the details and everything relates back to a unique reference code which is on there.

Cyclists have been subject to a recent spate in theft from across the Post area, including Bognor Regis and Chichester, despite having locks.

A spokesperson said: "A determined burglar can be difficult to discourage.

Good-quality doors, windows and locks are excellent deterrents, but there’s even more you can do to stop burglars in their

tracks.

"You can make your valuables less attractive to thieves by using a property or police-approved forensic marking solution only visible under Ultraviolet (UV) light. THis can take the form of a special marker using ink or paint. Mark or etch your property with your post code, house or flat number or the first three letters of your address.

"All of these measures help police identify stolen goods, making it harder for thieves to sell."

Because Ofsted has deemed the school to be ‘inadequate’, the Department for Education would normally issue an academy order requiring the school to convert to academy status. Although this is a legal requirement outside of the local authority’s control, and largely because of the school’s small size, this may not be a practical option.

THe statement said: "We are therefore delighted to be strengthening the links with other locality schools to build greater connections and remain committed to ensuring that parents, carers, staff and the wider community will continue to be consulted as the need arises."

County councillor Jamie Fitzjohn added: "I am deeply disappointed in the outcome but we are all working together to bring stability for children from September."

` Rape investigation DETECTIVES investigating the rape of a woman in Chichester city centre are appealing for information.

On Wednesday eveing last week, the 40-year-old woman was in a doorway at the now empty Argos building in South Street, Chichester, when she was raped by several men.

THe men are all described as in their 30s, with tanned skin and of slim-build.

THe victim is receiving specialist support and advice from specially trained officers while detectives have been working with her to establish the full circumstances.

THe crime was first reported to police on Monday evening. No arrests have been made at this stage.

Detective Inspector Sally Arbuckle, of the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit, said: "If you were out and about in Chichester city centre that Wednesday evening, June 19, and saw any suspicious activity, especially towards the bottom of South Street, near the railway station, we would like to speak to you.

"Officers were due to have been in South Street on Wednesday evening, one week on from the crime, to talk to potential witnesses.

"If you can help in any way please also contact us online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Keyhaven.

"THis was an isolated but very distressing incident involving a vulnerable person who is part of the local street community, and we need to trace those involved."

Part of harbour is now for sale

THe new owner of the multi-million pound plot of land would also automatically become Lord of the Manor of Bosham - an historic title.

THe Burhill Group Ltd has instructed property consultancy Vail Williams LLP to sell the Lordship of the Manor of Bosham and property interests that were previously part of the ancient Manor of Bosham, in picturesque Chichester Harbour, and it is being marketed internationally.

In addition to the quay and other valuable waterfront land, the freehold includes more than 800 moorings in Chichester Harbour. THe annual income from rents and mooring licences totals more than £400,000.

THe freehold estate includes Bosham Quay and the Old Mill, now the home of Bosham Sailing Club, together with other associated property linked to the sailing club.

Ian Froome, a Vail Williams partner who specialises in marine and leisure markets, said: “THis is a sound financial investment and the ancient manorial title makes it somewhat of a rarity, so we anticipate keen interest from buyers nationally and internationally, especially because of the Guinness

family connection.

“We anticipate strong interest, both here in the UK and internationally, and we expect offers to exceed £6 million.

“Manors are of ancient origin, dating before Norman times. THe owner is entitled to refer to themselves as Lord of the Manor and they can use it on any legal or personal documents.”

THe sale is expected to attract strong interest as the freehold has been owned by members of the Guinness family since the late 2nd Earl of Iveagh acquired the Manor back in the 1920s.

At that time, both he and other members of the family were keen yachtsmen and regularly sailed their own boats in Chichester Harbour and the Solent, generating strong local connections.

Ian, of Vail Williams’ Solent Region, added: “Bosham, with its 10th century church and harbour, is in an idyllic setting – it is quintessentially English.

“Chichester Harbour is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is one of the most popular leisure sailing waters in the UK, with ready access to the Solent and the globally renowned yacht racing town of Cowes.”

Huge number of visitors will see a record-breaking value of cars

THis year's Goodwood Festival of Speed is breaking records by hosting a total daily value of cars performing on the Hill of over £1.8 billion.

THe event has reached its 27th year and this year’s Festival of Speed has a theme of ‘Speed Kings, Motorsport Record Breakers’, and runs from July 4-7.

For four days, the event will make West Sussex the centre of the global automotive industry and create its greatest annual spectacle.

A total of 650 historic and contemporary racing cars and motorcycles, new road vehicles and forward-looking prototypes has been assembled to put on a show that will draw 60,000 people per day.

Among the earliest runners will be the 1907 Itala, which drove from Peking to Paris in the first great inter-continental marathon of its kind, proving the internal combustion engine as man’s means to conquer the globe.

In contrast, Volkswagen’s ID.R allelectric prototype will show some of the speed that has already set a new fastestever time at the Pikes Peak hill climb in America and shattered the electric car record at the Nürburgring racetrack.

Landmark celebrations at Goodwood

will include Mercedes-Benz celebrating 125 years in competition, Bentley in its centennial year, 60 years of the Mini, 50 years since Sir Jackie Stewart’s first Formula 1 world championship title, 40 years of the World Rally Championship drivers’ title and 25 years since the first of Michael Schumacher’s record of seven F1 drivers’ titles.

THe iconic central feature that presides over the Hill will this year celebrate Aston Martin’s racing history at Goodwood.

THe 31-metre sculpture will be crowned by an Aston Martin DBR1, 60 years after Stirling Moss dramatically claimed the World Sportscar Championship at the Tourist Trophy by snatching victory from Ferrari and Porsche. A fleet of Aston’s greatest racing cars, valued at more than £100 million, will also make its way up the Hill each day to celebrate the marque's enduring success.

` Police reports DURING the week from Monday, June 10, to Sunday, June 16, there were a number of vehicle break-ins at beauty spot car parks. Locations included Stoughton Down, Hunters Race, Eartham Wood and West Stoke.

Numerous other reports were made to police, including: In Challen Close, Oving, on Tuesday, June 11, police received a report of a vehicle break-in. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0406 11/6.

On Wednesday, June 12, police received a report of an insecure vehicle being entered in Colworth, Chichester. A satnav was stolen.

kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A FEAR has been expressed that the mobile library service which visits villages in and around Chichester could be scrapped.

West Sussex County Council has said in the past week the vehicle which provides the service has been taken off the road.

It says the mobile library has been suffering problems in the past year which had left it unusable.

THis leaves its hundreds of booklovers who relied on its fortnightly visits without the ability to borrow or return their favourite volumes.

West Sussex county councillor Francis Oppler said he was dismayed by the news.

"I'm deeply unhappy that, going by the email I've received, the county council have had a clear indication that the library has been having problems.

"THey should have started to plan for its replacement a year ago when they first knew it was an ageing vehicle.

"THis has been happening in slow motion and I want to know what the library service has been doing about it.

"To me, this seems a backdoor way of being able to reduce or cut the service."

THe mobile library, based at Bognor Regis Library in London Road, served 60 locations on its fortnightly timetable.

Its area stretched from Findon to Northchapel and across to the boundary with Hampshire. It was said last year 800 people in those locations took the chance

to indulge themselves in a novel or collection of short stories from its shelves.

Around Chichester, the library made stops in East Dean, Lavant, Bosham, Compton and Fishbourne as well as many more.

"THe mobile library remains a vital lifeline for many people who don't have their own transport throughout the Chichester area and further afield.

"In Bognor Regis, we have a disproportionately high number of older people, which means the service will continue to have an importance and relevance into the future," said Cllr Oppler.

He said he would be formally seeking a replacement vehicle be bought to enable the service to be resumed as soon as possible.

"THis is not just about people being able to borrow books. It's also the human contact they gain from visiting the library.

THat is just as important," he said.

News about the vehicle's withdrawal was given in an email by Cllr Debbie Kennard, the council's cabinet member for safer stronger communities.

She wrote that the mobile service had spent 'a significant time' off the road in the past year owing to mechanical failures.

"Unfortunately, the vehicle used is no longer serviceable and the difficult decision has been taken to take it off the road permanently," she stated.

She said the decision was made after advice from the council's transport services section, which was responsible for assessing the vehicle's roadworthiness.

CHICHESTER District Council has said it is having difficulty recycling waste in the city.

Special litter bins which are dotted around the city have two sections one for rubbish and one for recycling, including plastic bottles, aerosols, cartons, food tins and drinks cans, mixed paper and card, foil and mixed glass bottles and jars.

A Chichester Post reader got in touch to say they had witnessed council workers emptying the bins and noticed they bagged up the rubbish together and put it in their vehicle.

When the reader asked the worker, he said they responded by saying so many people were not actually using the bins correctly (not putting the right things in the correct sections) so they can't separate it.

A district council spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, we are experiencing problems with these types of bins

because people are not putting the general waste and recycling waste in the correct compartments.

"THis means that when our refuse collectors come to empty the bins, they are full of mixed waste and the recycling material is contaminated and cannot be separated from the general waste in order to be processed.

"THis is something we are currently reviewing."

Last year, a six per cent rise in recycling in the city was recorded in just two years.

Since the council launched its recycling campaign in 2016, the recycling rate has increased from 39 per cent to 45 per cent.

It was also reported that there had been a significant reduction in the amount of household waste, which has fallen by 11 per cent, which equates to 64kg of waste per household.

Peregrine chicks flee nest and take flight

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk IT'S JUST less than two months since the first peregrine chick hatched in a nest box hidden in the city's cathedral and now all four chicks have taken flight.

THe peregrines, which nest at the cathedral every year, became proud parents just days after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed baby Archie into the world.

THe cathedral ran open days at the weekends with David Shaw Wildlife were able to use equipment to get closeup shots of the birds and answer any questions.

THose unable to get to the cathedral could view a live webcam of the nesting site online.

THis year, the peregrine project has been run jointly by the cathedral, the Sussex Ornithological Society and local wildlife enthusiasts David and Janet Shaw, who have been observing the birds since 2001.

David, speaking exclusively to the Chichester Post, said: "THe chicks are all very fit and healthy. THey have been flying really well but landing is still a bit of a problem for them and it's quite amusing to watch! It's a bit like watching an old fashioned plane coming in to land.

"It's great seeing how the four have grown. THe parents have been just

amazing and made sure they have had all the necessary training."

THe three females and their brother - nicknamed as Bob Marley and the Wailers, will continue to roost at the cathedral for the next six to eight weeks but as the weeks progress they will fly further and further away with their mother.

THeir mum will eventually go with them and encourage them not to come back. David continued: "Dad will stay behind to defend their home at the cathedral while mum takes the babies away."

THe birds are protected by laws reinforced by European legislation known as the Nature Directives.

Chichester Cathedral was the first site in Europe to host a peregrine webcam to provide an intimate view of peregrines raising their young.

Peregrines were seen on the tower in the mid-1990s and may well have been visiting for many hundreds of years before.

THey have been very successfully nesting on the cathedral and have fledged more than 60 chicks since the first in 2001.

David said he has been amazed at the support by the local community.

He said: "THe open days have been incredibly successful. We completed 14 days in total and the least number of people we had during one day was about 400.

"On the last Sunday, just after 9.30am ,we had our first coach-load of about 54 people and that just went on all day with about 1,500 visitors over the day.

"It's great to see youngsters coming with their parents and everyone seems genuinely fascinating and return.

"It's just been a brilliant community project between the cathedral, the ornithological society and myself and Janet. A huge thank you has to go to the cathedral, I really hope they let us do it again next year."

Visitors celebrate the countryside with special Selsey Parks events

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS and visitors of Selsey were treated to a fun-packed weekend of family activities at East Beach Pond and Manor Green park.

Organised by Selsey Town Council, the Love Your Parks 2019 event showcased two of Selsey’s open spaces, introduced different activities available from various community groups and encouraged more outdoor family interaction.

Selsey, which is usually noted for its glorious beaches, became the subject of talk for its fantastic green and outdoor spaces.

With glorious weather, families got to take part in an assortment of outdoor activities while feasting on fruit bags, donated by the event’s sponsor, Nature’s Way Foods Ltd. A representative for the company stated: "Nature's Way Foods Ltd have a thriving community programme and are proud to support local organisations that focus on education, sport and healthy living.

"Selsey is an important part of our

heritage and our first home where we began 25 years ago, setting up a small bagged salad operation which has since grown to four sites.

"We feel that the Love Your Parks event is a great link to our brand and strategy and more importantly brings the community together and we’re proud to be part of that."

On Saturday, at East Beach Pond, Selsey Model Boat Club delighted visitors with a series of displays and races and the opportunity for the public to sail the vessels.

Selsey Men in Sheds introduced their range of handmade wooden items while the Manhood Wildlife & Heritage group got children pond dipping, investigating Selsey’s wildlife by following a quiz trail and taking part in a colouring competition.

Love Your Parks 2019 continued on the Sunday at Manor Green Park, where children immersed themselves in Selsey’s marine life via Mulberry diver’s portable beach.

Families and the 421 Air cadets jumped along to music with KTroo as younger children bounced on free inflatables courtesy of Bounceabout.

Chichester District Scouts showcased scouting within the district and Selsey Scouts staged cake decorating and keyring-making workshops. One sevenyear-old commented that she would like to join the Scouts just for their frosting recipe.

THe Selsey Lions cooked up a feast as opera singer Silvia Rota filled the park with music. Slimming World, Chichester District Council’s Wellbeing team and Friends of Selsey Medical Centre were all on hand to offer their advice, too.

Selsey Town Council chairman, Cllr Andrew Brown, said: "Selsey Town Council is committed to making our open spaces accessible and fun for all our residents and visitors to enjoy.

"THe true success of this weekend was watching families re-engage with our parks whilst experiencing a wide variety of family-friendly, fun activities available in Selsey.

` Women's sport AN ACADEMY which looks to address the gender-imbalance in the international sports industry by helping women access jobs at the highest level has opened.

THe initiative, known as the Women in Sport Leadership Academy (WSLA), is led by the University of Chichester, alongside other advocacy groups, to develop more female trailblazers across the worldwide sector.

More than 35 people from 17 countries have joined the programme to improve their leadership competencies and chances of employment in influential positions.

Senior lecturer Dr Jordan Matthews, from the University of Chichester, said: “WSLA was created to make a fundamental difference in sport, to address inequality at the top, and to give women a platform where they make an impact worldwide.”

THe academy, a week-long residential course for participants, has been hosted at the university since 2014 to develop the confidence of female leaders and assists the international women in sport movement.

Now in its sixth year, it has already helped nearly 300 graduates from 50 countries worldwide, and was recognised by the International Olympic Committee in its gender equality report.

THe WSLA initiative is led by the Anita White Foundation, based at the university, which develops academic research on the women and sport movement.

Mayor welcomes uni teachers

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE MAYOR of Chichester has welcomed teachers from South Korea to the city as part of a development programme.

THe 21 experienced teachers from Sookmyung Women's University are undertaking an in-service teacher development programme at the University of Chichester organised by its international short programme unit.

On Wednesday afternoon, Cllr Richard Plowman, the city's current mayor, welcomed the teachers to the Chichester City Council chamber and talked to them about the history of the city and the council.

Teachers then asked Cllr Plowman questions, including asking about the mayor's robes and chain.

THe training enables the teachers to develop their professional knowledge and practical skills in teaching English as well as enabling them to acquire the skills to enable them to cascade the training down to their colleagues in Seoul upon their return.

In addition to spending time training at the university, the teachers will spend two weeks in local schools learning more about the English education system and developing their teaching skills.

Schools supporting the programme include Orminston Six Villages Academy, St Philip Howard Catholic School, Bishop Luffa and Aldingbourne Primary School.

THe Korean teachers are looking forward to sharing knowledge and skills with local teachers and experiencing

different aspects of life within an English School.

As well as observing lessons across a variety of subjects, the teachers hope to have the opportunity to educate pupils about life in Korea, introducing them to the basics of the Korean language and developing their cultural knowledge of the country.

THe university's programme unit has been working in the filed of International teacher education for about 40 years and design tailor-made and externally commissioned short courses as

required. In addition to the Korean teachers, they are also currently working with groups from Japan, Spain and Nigeria.

Cllr Plowman commented: "It was a sheer delight to host some 20 teachers from Korea who were attended a course at the university.

"THey were very interested in Chichester and its history. I don’t think I have had my picture taken so many times as they all took turns to be photographed in the mayor’s chair in the council chamber.”

City could be one step closer to car free day

THe group has consulted residents and business owners as part of preparation for the day and are working with Peter Wilson, a local resident, who is giving advice as a volunteer.

Peter said: "I have organised a number of car free days in central London and have been involved in sustainable travel events since my time as county road safety officer in West Sussex.

"I am delighted to be supporting the community group that is looking at sustainability and the future of the next generation."

Mark Record, who helped initiate the idea in Chichester, added: "A lot of hard work has been put into door knocking and talking to residents. Should the council approve the order, which we hope it will, then the community group will be liaising with musicians, dancers and other volunteers to put a plan together for the day."

A competition was also created by city and district councillor, Sarah Sharp, working with the Chichester Post and Pallant House Gallery.

Cllr Sharp said: "We are also working with Pallant House Gallery, who will be

judging our Car(e) Free Day competition for children.

"We have prizes from Everyone Active, THe Picturedrome Cinema and Stagecoach. We are extending the deadline for competition entries by one week so you still have time to send in a picture or story to the Chichester Post about what you imagine a Car(e) Free Day would be like."

International Car Free Day is celebrated in places all around the world. It is a day when people discover what it is like to live without cars and motor vehicles filling their streets.

Cllr Sharp added: "Children in other cities already enjoy car free days on a permanent or regular basis. Paris and Edinburgh have regular car free days and places like Brussels and Oslo are forging ahead giving large areas of streets back to people to enjoy.

Significant concerns are found in the county's fire and rescue service ACCUSATIONS of bullying due to gender or race were listed alongside ‘significant concerns’ about public protection in a highly critical report of fire services in West Sussex.

Overall, West Sussex Fire & Rescue was rated ‘requires improvement’, but two areas – ‘protecting the public through fire regulation’ and ‘ensuring fairness and promoting diversity’ – were found to be ‘inadequate’.

While exploring the latter, inspectors found that work to address bullying within the service had not yet started, despite concerns being raised in a staff survey in 2017.

THey also reported that, during the inspection, they had met staff ‘who told us they had been bullied because of their gender or race’.

When it came to firefighting and keeping people safe, the inspectors provided a list of areas which required improvement – all of which appeared to be bread and butter fire service skills.

THey were: understanding the risk of fire and other emergencies; preventing fires and other risks; responding to fires and other emergencies; and responding to national risks.

THe report pointed out that, when it came to fires and emergencies, West Sussex had not met its response standards since 2014/15.

It added: “In its response to fires and emergencies, the service isn’t making the best use of resources. Its fire engine availability is low and it is struggling to recruit and retain sufficient on-call firefighters.

“It hasn’t produced a clear plan for aligning its procedures to national guidance, its management of information after an incident is often poor and it has

had little success in reducing the high number of false alarms it receives.”

Figures in the report showed that, in the 12 months up to September 30, 2018, more than half of the 9,345 incidents attended – 51 per cent – turned out to be false alarms. THat’s around 4,766 calls.

Almost 2,000 calls were to fires and around 2,600 were to non-fire incidents.

At the end of March, 2009, West Sussex had 46 fire engines. THis was reduced to 35 by 2018.

THe inspection report and improvement plan will be subject to scrutiny at a special meeting of the environment, communities and fire select committee, at County Hall, Chichester, on July 10.

Dr James Walsh, leader of the opposition and the Liberal Democrat group, said the report indicated ‘a total failure of leadership’.

He added: “Once again, it is time that she (Cllr Louise Goldsmith) seriously considers her position, and takes the decision to step down before she is dumped by her own party.”

Responding to the report, Neil Stocker, chief fire officer (acting) said: “We acknowledge the findings and recommendations in the report and thank the inspectors for carrying out a detailed review of our service, the first of its kind.

“I want to reassure the public that the safety of our residents remains the top priority for our fire and rescue service and we are determined to address the concerns raised in the report.

“THe report identifies our areas for improvement but also a number of our strengths. Although there is always room for further improvement, last year we attended 9,292 incidents - up from the previous year. We attended 88 per cent

“When the inspection team revisited our service in February, they noted that we had taken on board their comments and have recognised the improvements we are making. THey welcomed our detailed action plan which we will continue deliver as a priority.”

THe Fire Brigades Union has said it was ‘not surprised’ that West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service had been on the receiving end of a highly critical inspection report.

Accusing the county council of the ‘systematic decimation’ of the service, the union called for millions of pounds of budget cuts to be reversed.

County council Labour group leader Michael Jones, responding to the report's findings, said: "THe report is yet another example of the West Sussex Tories failing

Fighting for unit in city's hospital MPS IN West Sussex can expect to receive letters from frustrated councillors about the ongoing fight to place a radiotherapy unit at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.

THe county is the only one in England not to have the equipment, known as Linacs, within its boundary, meaning patients face long and painful journeys to Brighton, Guildford and London for treatment.

At a recent meeting of the health and adult social care select committee (HASC), members pointed out that the issue had been dragging on for more than 12 years and was now ‘urgent’.

Chairman Bryan Turner received a letter from Marianne Griffiths, chief executive of both the Western Sussex Hospitals and the Brighton and Sussex University hospitals trusts, sharing support for the St Richard’s option.

Dame Marianne added they would be reviewing provision of cancer services across Chichester and Worthing ‘to determine whether there is a better configuration for cancer services across the whole trust’.

It was hoped the review would lead to a business case being submitted to NHS England for funding for St Richard’s.

THere was frustration from a number of committee members, though.

Dr James Walsh (Lib Dem, Littlehampton East) said: “THe letter doesn’t really move us forward. It

restates the position we were in 18 months or two years ago.

“We’ve all known this, and the problem hasn’t been so much where the service is provided, it’s about how patients get to those services.

“What we need to make sure is we are focussed on the patients and making sure they don’t have to go from A to B to C.” Oliver Phillips, the trust’s planning and strategy director, said he shared members’ frustration, adding: “We are very, very keen as a trust to have a radiotherapy unit at St Richard’s Hospital.

“A review undertaken by the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance clearly demonstrated that across the whole of Sussex that was the area that was most suffering.

“It’s not so much actually the people that live within a mile of here, it’s Littlehampton patients or Pulborough patients – that’s where the real difficulty is in travel.

“We’ve knocked on the door of NHS England a number of times on this. What we’re very keen to do now is put forward a proposal for our entire cancer services that we hope that they can get behind.

“We will be discussing that with patients and public.”

Mr Phillips estimated that the review should be completed by early 2020.

If this has resulted in tensions rising and bullying, we are extremely alarmed to learn this because certainly no-one told councillors this was happening, and we will be looking to see what long overdue action the council will be taking to address it."

If a vote of no confidence is called, it will be tabled at the next meeting of the full council, on July 19.

` Summer campaign MOTORISTS have been warned the annual summer crackdown by Sussex Police and Surrey Police on drink and drug-driving has begun.

THe law-enforcement began on Monday and will last until July 7.

Anyone caught and convicted during this period will be identified on the Sussex Police news website and social media pages.

THe campaign aims to keep road users as safe as possible by educating motorists of the danger of mixing drink, drugs and driving.

Chief Inspector Michael Hodder, of the Sussex Police and Surrey Police roads policing unit, said: "It goes without saying that drink and drug-driving destroys lives, and it's something that can so easily be detected. People have a clear decision to make.

"By choosing to drive under the influence of drink or drugs, you are choosing to take a huge risk. Alcohol and substances significantly impair your ability to carry out even the simplest of tasks, and you should never get behind the wheel of a car in those circumstances."

THe campaign also seeks to spread the message the influence of drink and drugs can last for hours.

"You can also be over the limit the morning after, " said Ch Insp Hodder.

"A common misconception is that a few hours' sleep, a coffee and some breakfast will do the trick. But it can take several hours for alcohol to leave your system and even longer for drugs."

THe results of drink or drugdriving can include at least a 12-month ban, an unlimited fine and dearer car insurance. Police officers respond to reports of illegal driving all year.

Festival is a success MORE than 2,000 people had fun at the biggest CoreFest in Walberton yet.

THe bumper turnout to the weekendlong event delighted organisers at Hft Sussex.

CoreFest was held at their Sussex Orchards site in Eastergate Lane and boasted three stages of music and entertainment, two licensed bars, accessible camping facilities and a variety of games and activities.

THose who went along have been unanimous in their positive feedback about the festival. It is estimated to have raised £4,000-plus.

Sarah Shallis, Hft's operations manager, said: "CoreFest gets bigger and better each year and we were delighted with this year's turn-out.

"It's always been our ambition to create a fully inclusive festival that's a highlight of the year for the whole community.

"So it was great to see so many people come together to spend some time with family and friends while enjoying the brilliant music and entertainment on offer. All funds raised at the festival are set to go towards supporting local people with learning disabilities to live the best life possible."

Last weekend's CoreFest was the fourth to be held. Its musical line-up included top tribute acts Abba Magic, THe Who: Quadrophonia, and Chaz and Dave. Local favourites such as Iron Tyger, Murdoch's Crazy Eyes and Indya also took to the stages.

Interactive storytelling, a silent disco

and a circus tent with performances and workshop also provided plenty to enjoy.

Hft supports more than 70 people from the site with a range of services.

I am a representative of, and one of the drivers for, the Selsey Shuttle Community Bus, which has served our community since 1999.

Our present bus is currently some three years old and with over 40,000 miles of community service in that time already. Our committee has therefore, for some time, been exercised by (a) how to best promote even further customer usage and (b) thinking how we might bring about a more eco-friendly service.

Taking on a 5k run to raise funds for school

THis was the second year for the Boxgrove Run which guided runners around the village’s Priory and ruins, the quarry woods, the Tinwood Vinyard and the local pub.

THe run was launched last year by parents of pupils at Boxgrove C of E Primary School, which needs to raise

£150,000 to build a much needed school hall as pupils do not have a space where they can get together for assembly, lunch, presentations and plays or PE when raining.

Organiser Mark Peters said: " What a great atmosphere for this year's Boxgrove 5k Trail Run and what a change in the weather! Initially the organisers were worried about the risks posed by slippy mud and puddles but this quickly turned into ensuring runners were adequately hydrated in the scorching Summer heat.

"THe Boxgrove Run is organised by local volunteers to raise funds for local causes

Inter-Schools Festival of STEAM Bourne Community College, in collaboration with The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Connecting STEM Teachers Programme, hosted the Inter-schools STEAM day in which 124 students and their teachers from Primary and Secondary schools across the south-east arrived for a day of fun and interactive hands-on team activities and challenges.

The day consisted of various challenges including the coding and building of radio controlled BattleBots, VEX Robotics challenges and Virtual Reality racing.

Students were encouraged to 'think like an Engineer' and to develop creative problem solving and collaboration skills and to generate and adapt ideas.

Professionals from the engineering sector shared stories of how they became experts in their chosen STEAM field.

The shortage of the workforce with STEAM skills is well documented.

Collaborative opportunities like this improve perceptions amongst young learners and helps to support the aspiration of those who wish to become the engineers of the future.

Event, Flowers at Boxgrove.

Boxgrove Priory will be the idyllic setting for a three-day festival of flowers on June 28, 29 and 30. More than 25 colourful displays, inspired by the names of choirs in the Anglican choral tradition and provided by flower arrangers from around the area, will be set against the historic background of the priory's architecture and tranquil atmosphere. A floralthemed concert by the priory’s own choir, featuring both secular and lighter pieces at 7.30 on June 29. Plants will be for sale throughout. Entry to the festival is £5 and £10 to the concert. Proceeds will go to the priory's restoration.

THis performance by artist and poet Philomena Harmsworth is a spoken and visual journey - a pause on her way round understanding the world - she has had to dismantle her thoughts to allow flow. Philomena’s performance will be of poetry, art, video and a book.

Proposed solar farm at Lidsey Farm Solafields is holding a second pre-application public exhibition regarding its proposal to build a solar farm of up to 10MW at Lidsey Farm, for those who were unable to attend the same exhibiton at Felpham in January 2019.

Summer fun with less alcohol

Health authorities often say nowadays we don't drink enough, especially water, a problem which is worse in summer when our bodies lose more fluid because of hotter temperatures.

WE'RE recommended to drink a minimum of two litres or eight glasses of water a day to keep hydrated and healthy and, especially with the emphasis on reducing single-use plastic bottles of water, British tap water is totally fine as the best liquid to reduce your thirst.

However, beer and other alcoholic drinks, such as cool white wine, are extremely tempting as a refreshing way to have a break on a hot day but, unfortunately, there are some downsides to imbibing too much too quickly.

Alcohol, whether beer, wine or spirits, acts as a diuretic, meaning your kidneys work overtime to expel fluid from your body and, therefore, you're even more at risk of becoming dehydrated, which can have serious medical repercussions. THe answer in summer, as the rest of the year, is to know your safe drinking limits and stick to them.

Official advice is is to drink plenty of water or soft drinks in between any alcoholic drinks to try to prevent dehydration. Of course, you won't be drinking and driving but swimming, walking near or being on water is also a no-no because your

But don't despair that all the fun has evaporated with the reduction in alcohol, today it's much more sociallyacceptable to have fruit juice, smoothies and mocktails. Recipe for kids Ingredients 

3 tbsp pomegranate seeds big bunch mint 2 limes, quartered, plus slices to garnish 1 litre pomegranate juice 500ml lemonade

Method 1. A day ahead, divide the pomegranate seeds between the holes in an ice cube tray, top up with water and freeze.

2. Reserve half the mint for serving, and tear the rest into a large jug with the lime quarters. Using a rolling pin, bash the mint and lime to release the flavours.

Add the pomegranate juice and lemonade. Put ice cubes in each glass, then strain over the pomegranate mix through a small sieve. Garnish with lime slices and more mint.

3. Alternatively, omit pomegranate seeds and juice and use cranberry juice instead of pomegranate.

Nestled deep in a country lane, close to the sea, Bailiffscourt Hotel and Spa can be found situated in Climping, among freshly mown lawns, a winding river and shady trees.

THE medieval retreat with its charming passageways winding through has cosy, warm lounges and tranquil corners for intimate and private gatherings before dining.

My companion, Taryn, and I opted to sit outside in the courtyard on a rather warm and muggy day and enjoyed a glass of local sparkling wine each.

We had a chance to browse both the lunch menu, offering three courses for £28 or two courses for £25 and the Climping menu which was three courses for £38 or two courses for £32.

Taryn decided to choose the lobster soup for her starter with aioli, gruyere cheese and croutes while I opted for the fresh pasta noodles with morel mushroom cream sauce, parmesan and truffle oil. Both starters were rich in flavours and just the right size for a lunch time appetiser.

THe three restaurants in the Historic Sussex Hotels group; Bailiffscourt, THe Spread Eagle (Midhurst) and Ockendnen Manor (Cuckfield), pride themselves by sourcing local ingredients to taste the flavours of Sussex. Game is sourced in Crawley Down and Duncton, cheeses come from Goodwood, Crowborough and Horsted Keynes, crab and lobster from Selsey, shellfish and fish from Littlehampton and a variety of wines and

beers from Ditchling, Albourne, Washington, Halnaker, Lodsworth and Arundel.

THe restaurants claim to have a great relationship with local suppliers, some of whom they have been working with for many years who know exactly what they want and therefore deliver excellent produce to meet the high standards.

It was a difficult choice for a main course, with options including grilled mackerel with fennel salad, coq au vin with mustard mash, and poached cod with a brioche, parmesan and hazelnut crust and roasted, garlic potatoes.

Taryn plumped for the roasted cornfed chicken supreme with creamed potato, morel mushroom cream sauce, spring greens and port jus. My companion noted how succulent the chicken was and matched perfectly to the potato and mushroom sauce.

I decided to have the vegetarian option and picked the pea and parmesan risotto with parmesan cracker, pea shoots and truffle oil.

THe flavoursome dish was creamy but light and I happily chose a homemade roll, which was baked to perfection to go with it.

Although completely full and ready for an afternoon nap, the delicious desserts were just too tempting. I struggled to decide between English rhubarb and dark chocolate tart or Eton Mess. In the end, the sound of meringue, vanilla cream and macerated English strawberries was just enticing and I was not disappointed. A light, fluffy cream which melted on my tongue with the sweet taste of vanilla worked perfectly with sweet, crispy, melt in your mouth meringue pieces and fresh strawberries.

Taryn decided to choose the coffee creme brulee with praline and pistachio ice cream which she described as the best creme brulee she has ever tasted. A light, crisp shell that shattered satisfyingly under her spoon and a rich, smooth layer of custard beneath with just a whisper of coffee. THe dessert was presented in a rather sweet coffee cup decorated with a charming bird.

Our visit was not complete without spotting one of the resident peacocks wandering around the gravel car park as we left.

Bailiffscourt is a dreamy retreat for those looking to use the spa, lunch or simply escape and enjoy nature. Set in picturesque countryside, it's easy to spend time in the luxurious atmosphere and unwind and enjoy.

Motivated to achieve mobility More than 86,000 people require hip replacements each year, making it one of the UK’s most common surgeries.

We spoke to consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital, Mr Michael Moss, to find out if there is an optimal time to get a hip replacement and why motivation is vital to the recovery process.

Everyone is different, but typically we see people presenting with pain deep in their groin, buttock or thigh, which can variably be described as dull, sharp, burning or simply discomfort. Some may experience little pain, and instead notice stiffness. THeir mobility may be reduced and they could start to struggle with certain daily activities, such as getting out of a chair or bending to tie their shoe laces, when these tasks never used to cause them any problems.

Typically, symptoms can develop anywhere from six months to one year, although it’s never one size fits all, and it’s not uncommon for people to experience symptoms across a shorter or longer time frame.

As a surgeon, part of my role is to enable my patient to fully understand the options available to them. Surgery is one route, but first and foremost, we always look to maintain the existing joint where possible. One of my patients has been coming to see me for 10 years as I’ve been able to preserve their joint without yet having to pursue surgery as an option.

For those that do require an operation, it’s important to understand that having a replacement joint is not the end of their mobility, but rather it’s the beginning of their restoration back to health.

Many of the patients I see have always enjoyed active lifestyles and are keen to get back to doing what they love as soon as possible. People are more physical than previous generations and it’s our job as

Hip replacements tend to be performed in older adults, but ages can vary greatly. THe youngest patient we’ve seen was a 17-yearold who required surgery due to childhood hip problems and the oldest to date was 101.

In terms of recovery, the positive news is that with desire, motivation and a tailored physiotherapy programme, most people will return to their normal activities within just a few months. I get great job satisfaction from seeing patients get their lives back, whether this be returning to top level sport or just walking their dog again.

NEWS VOLUNTEERING for one of our fabulous local charity boutiques will always be in fashion.

Did you know that our shops at Bognor Regis, Chichester, Worthing, Horsham and now Littlehampton all support the work at Mount Noddy?

We are a self-funded RSPCA branch and rely on kindness and our shop income to keep this essential work running smoothly.

Our Chichester shop has been open for two and a half years now, and is a busy little store, carefully selecting donations from the public, to offer value, good quality and one-off items that are all pre-loved. Not only does this help animals but it helps the environment, too.

THe shop, based at 50 North Street, next to the George and Dragon pub, opposite Leaders, is recruiting for some more volunteers who have a few hours spare each week. We will guarantee that you will like it as we're a friendly bunch.

THere are new people to meet, new skills to learn and biscuits to enjoy too, (and we don't just mean dog biscuits!) All we ask is that you are reliable, friendly, organised and have a love of animals.

THE eagerly-awaited launch of the Chichester Cathedral Festival of Flowers 2020 took place earlier this month, when flower arrangers and VIPs from across the county gathered in the cathedral to discover the theme of the festival and the celebrity patron for the first time.

Returning as designer of the Festival of Flowers 2020, Mrs Lyn Robinson revealed the theme of the festival as ‘Realms of Glory’, featuring quotations from the Bible, psalms, hymns, carols and prayers in picturesque tableaux, gardens and pedestal arrangements.

THese include a Garden of Eden; the sailing of the Mayflower to America 400 years ago, summer, autumn and winter gardens, an Easter garden, a rainbow, a heavenly feast and angels in the cloisters, among many other displays.

CHICHESTER residents have been urged to sign a petition which seeks recognition for Far East prisoners of war.

THe plight of thousands of servicemen like North Bersted resident Jill Robertson's father is the subject of a petition at petition. parliament.uk to establish a national day which commemorates the significance of August 15, 1945, when the Japanese surrendered to end the Second World War. Just under the 10,000 people needed to prompt a response from the government had signed the petition by Wednesday night.

Jill, pictured above, said the need for greater recognition of Far Eastern PoWs was shown by the decision to move next May's bank holiday from Monday, May 4, to Friday, May 8, to create a three-day commemoration of 75 years since VE Day. "Recently announced as a public holiday for VE Day, the Victory in Japan day recognition for these prisoners' end of war goes completely unnoticed by the public," she said.

THe petition states: "Over 50,000 UK servicemen were held as Japanese prisoners of war in South East Asia between 1941-45, of whom 25 per cent were either killed or died during captivity.

"THese brave men felt cruelly overlooked upon their repatriation and beyond, and a national day of commemoration would go some way to putting that right."

Jill, of Violet Close, is the West Sussex co-ordinator for the Children of Far Eastern Prisoners of War charity. Her father, Stanley Moore, was held by the Japanese in the infamous Changi jail.

ASSISTANCE dog charity Canine Partners are inviting families and their pet dogs to their southern training centre this summer to join in the fun at their annual dog show.

Locals are expected to attend the family fun pet dog show near Midhurst, on Saturday, July 20, with their pet dogs to raise vital funds for the local-based assistance dog charity.

“Our family fun pet dog show is the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family for a great day out while supporting a local charity,” said Gemma Tupper, community fundraiser for the south and Wales.

“It’s not all about the dogs as there is plenty of fun activities and games to keep the kids entertained plus some delicious food and refreshments.”

THe dog show includes categories such as most handsome chap, loveliest lady and best rescue.

Canine Partners is a national charity that trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence.

THe dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. THey can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency.

THere will also be demonstrations of what Canine Partners’ amazing dogs can do, delicious food and refreshments, and a chance to win fantastic prizes in the tombola.

The Chichester Canal opening ceremonies

f View of Poyntz bridge at Hunston around 1900 THE first turf of the canal was dug close to the Ship and Anchor public house at Ford on August 20, 1818, by Mr J. Williams, the chief clerk of the Portsmouth and Arundel Navigation Company and one of the leading proposers of the canal.

THe opening of the barge canal from Ford to Hunston marked the completion of the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal and the anticipated London to Portsmouth inland waterway was finally open.

Dinners to celebrate the event were planned at the Swan Inn in Chichester on Monday, May 26, 1823, and at the George Inn in Portsmouth the following day, with tickets costing 12s 6d, including wine. On the water the celebrations lasted for two days.

May 26 was a beautiful summer's day and 18 boats and barges, decorated with colourful streamers, gathered at the entrance to the Canal at Ford.

A boat with a 'Band of Music' from the Sussex Militia led the procession, followed by the Earl of Egremont with a large party of guests on his pleasure barge.

THe Duke of Norfolk followed in his 'handsome pleasure boat', accompanied by the Mayor of Arundel, William Holmes, and gentlemen from the town and neighbourhood.

THe Mayor of Guildford brought many of his townspeople in his boat. Six other barges were filled by parties of local gentry and another band of musicians.

Five barges with goods for Chichester, one of which had reached Ford from London in three days instead of the usual four, and three laden with chalk for farmers on the line of the canal, brought up the rear.

THe Morning Post reported: "THe procession was handsomely decorated with colours, and

it glided along upon the smooth surface of the canal through a country possessing every beauty, which high cultivation, interspersed with occasional plantations, could give it; while from the decks of the barges, the charms of a beautiful day were heightened by a very extensive and delightful varied prospect".

At Hunston Common, this procession was joined by the schooner 'Richmond', launched at the Basin the year before, and five sloops which had sailed from Chichester Harbour for the journey up to the Southgate Basin, creating a procession almost a mile long.

A 'very numerous assemblage of spectators, entirely covering the wharves and adjoining land' welcomed their arrival, along with cannon fire.

An unexpected demonstration of the purpose of the Basin was the discovery of a sloop and two barges unloading their cargoes as the celebratory procession arrived.

In 1887, an elderly resident of Chichester remembered the event: "THe first thing that took place was the digging of the canal, and when that was finished there was a grand 'to do'. It was a pretty sight, the vessels being towed down with scores of people on the decks, bands playing and flags flying. THere was a fair held there that very day, which was kept up afterwards for years. THere was jumping in sacks, diving for oranges, donkey racing and so on".

THe refurbished Heritage Centre at the Chichester Canal will be opening later this summer. Visitors will be able to discover the canal's history from a commercial waterway in the 19th century to the leisure opportunities it provides today. Permanent displays, temporary exhibitions and touch screen

THe Heritage Centre is housed in the Old Stable Block next to the Richmond Arms and both of these were original buildings at the Canal Basin, dating from the 1820s. THe Heritage Centre will be open seven days a week during the cafe opening hours and

entrance is free.

In addition to independent visitors, Chichester Canal welcomes school, youth and adult groups and tailors these visits to the requirements of each group, including a boat trip along the canal.

Darts INFINITY Short Mat Bowling Club have made history after lifting THe County Competitions as well as THe League and THe Knock Out Cup in the last year.

THe club, who play at Boxgrove Village Hall, have become the first team ever to win all of those competitions since the formation of the Sussex league.

THe club also travelled to Hampshire and Dorset, taking their winning ways with them.

Eight members of this small club also played in THe County Premier Team, losing the Plate competition on the last end of the last two games.

THey now look forward to continuing their success with the County in the 2019/20 season.

Infinity have also had national representation with Steve Chris and Richard Jeffrey representing Sussex at the national championships where they suffered defeat in the semi final.

In the quartets, Chris Page, Charlotte Rollings, together with Chris and Richard Jeffery, also reached the final four before tasting defeat.

Catherine takes Points Week prize SAILS aplenty were unfurled on Chichester Harbour as Itchenor Sailing Club hosted its annual Points Week.

THe three classes based at the club XOD, Sunbeam and Swallow all had races each day in what is a festival of classic keelboat racing.

Start times were adjusted to ensure that the race team, led by Roger Wickens, could set courses for the fleets to take full advantage of high tides in the harbour. Sixty-four classic boats took part as the Itchenor fleet was joined by four visiting boats from Cowes, Lymington, Yarmouth and Parkstone.

Monday provided perfect weather and last year’s winner, Las, helmed by John Tremlett, made a fast start to take first place and Roger Yeoman, steering Xcitation, into second place.

However, slightly trickier conditions on Tuesday gave a new winner – Catherine with Colin McKinnon on the stick – and Liz and Phil Chowiencyk’s Seamist a surprise second.

All change again on Wednesday when light winds proved even more challenging. Visiting sailor Michael O’Donnell brought Lightwood home to take the bullet ahead of local maestro Alastair Shaw in Phoenix.

THursday and Friday saw the return of those champagne conditions all racers enjoy.

Yeoman and Moss’s Xcitation made amends for the black flag disqualification they suffered the day before with their only first place of the week. Phoenix was again second.

So with six boats in contention for the week’s top prize, the Benson Platter, a close battle ensued. Catherine was the early leader but had dropped back to third under pressure from a number of boats including Xcitation and Madeline, in the hands of visitor Penny Fulford. In the end, Catherine prevailed to take the race and week.

THe Sunbeam class also enjoyed close competition. Peter Taylor and Robin Richardson in Betty showed early in the week with class captain Nick Leach in close pursuit.

However, it was Polly’s consistency that was key as she trumphed with Betty in second.

Tim Hill’s Query took third place overall on count back from Penny.

In the Swallow class, the series became a tussle between Skua and Osprey swapping first places during the series. Both had three firsts but it was Skua’s two seconds that proved the difference against Osprey’s.

MCC's wait for win continues MIDDLETON will be looking to end a five match run without a win when they welcome Cuckfield to Sea Lane tomorrow (11.30am).

After starting the Sussex Premier Division with three wins, Sean Heather's side have fallen off the pace, losing three with no result in the other two.

Despite this month-long wait for a victory, Middleton remain fourth in the ten team division, with the halfway point of the season nearing.

Heather will hope his side can rediscover their winning form again this weekend when fifth-place Cuckfield head to the Sussex coast.

With three points separating the two sides, victory for either will push them upwards.

Middleton will be looking for their overseas player, Mahesh Rawat, to continue his fine form and fire them to victory.

THe Indian wicket keeperbatsman fired an unbeaten 151 in last weekend's draw at titlechasing Roffey.

After winning the toss, Heather

elected to bat and take advantage of the rule which allowed them to bat for more than half of the 110 overs on offer.

THey got off to a poor start as opener Jack Dawling (5) and Mason Robinson (1) were both back in the shed with 20 scored.

When Harry Hovey (12) fell with the score doubled, Middleton needed to rebuild. Rawat and skipper Heather did just that, putting on 55 before the captain was bowled for 34.

THe Indian just kept on firing though, stepping up his scoring to smash 18 fours and five sixes in a tally of 151* in Middleton's score of 262-8.

In reply, the visitors made an excellent start taking the scalp of Roffey's Australian opener, Ben Manenti, with no score on the board.

THey managed to rally, reaching 212-5 and looking well-placed to get the win.

But Middleton's bowlers hit back, taking four wickets for four runs to put them in with a chance of victory before the overs ran out.

TABLE-TOPPING Bognor can take a big step towards promotion to the Sussex Premier Division when they welcome second-place St James's Montefiore to the Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side sit top of Division Two after crushing local rivals Chichester Priory Park last weekend by 122 runs.

Tomorrow's match is set to be a much tougher test as a side who are just three points behind them in the standings head to Hawthorn Road.

Bognor will be hoping for a repeat performance from their skipper, who led from the front and fired a century in the match against Priory Park.

Batting first, Maskell put on 144 for the first wicket with Mikey Harris (37) before eventually being dismissed for 102.

With other contributions from Joe Ashmore (21) and Roy Kaia (41), Bognor eventually declared with 242 for 4. Mike Smith was the pick of the Chi bowlers, taking 1-28 off eight overs.

In reply, Bognor made a quick start taking two wickets to reduce Priory to 15-2. Chi rebuilt though through Matthew Bennison

(31) and Abhi Raut (41)put on 60 for the third wicket.

Kaia (2-40) then had the former caught behind with 75 on the board, a dismissal which triggered a collapse in the Chi ranks.

It was left to Bognor opening bowler Josh Sargeant to do the damage, as he returned to run through the tail and end with figures of 5-24 as Priory were all out for 120.

THat defeat leaves Chi third bottom, just outside the dropzone, with pressure now building ahead of a trip to Haywards Heath tomorrow (12.30pm).

In Division THree West, third-place Pagham will look to keep up their title hopes when they head to fourth-place Worthing tomorrow (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side, who are just three points off top spot, demolished Findon last time out, eventually winning by 189 runs.

THe star of the show was Nick Smith, who smashed 149 from 105 balls after coming in at number three.

His contribution helped Pagham to a score of 275-9, a score which Findon never got close to chasing down as they were bowled out for 86. Rico Webb took a remarkable 8-33.

Pearce delight as Read signs

Muitt to return with new deal BOGNOR'S promotion hopes have received a boost after top scorer Jimmy Muitt penned a deal to stay at Nyewood Lane.

THe former Brighton player, who bagged 26 goals in 40 matches last campaign, has turned down more lucrative offers from elsewhere to stay with the Rocks.

THe news is a real coup for the club, who are looking to improve on a disappointing 14th place finish in the Bostik Premier last term.

With Muitt set to link up with former Portsmouth youngster Dan Smith again up front, Bognor now have a strike force to be feared.

And manager Jack Pearce said he could barely wait to see the fan favourite return to the fold when the club assemble for pre-season in the coming days.

THe veteran manager said: "Jimmy signing is great news – a real boost for the club and the supporters and we're delighted that he has chosen to stay with us.

"It's no secret that he has had clubs keeping tabs on him with a view to trying to sign him, and that's largely down to how well he performed for us last season, especially in terms of the number of goals he was able to score."

"It's been said before - in fact, something similar was said when Doug [Tuck] signed on again that this club of ours is special and it is. To have a player with the talent that Jimmy Muitt has got to actually decide to stay with us and grow and develop tells you so much about Bognor and the way we run the club and also about Jimmy as a man."

Muitt's tally last term was all the more remarkable given he suffered an injury in February which made him miss the majority of the run-in.

His absence, combined with the departure of Smith to Cork City on loan coincided with the Rocks falling from the playoff places.

Pearce will hope lightning does not strike twice again next term.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes he has bagged a talent for the future after snapping up former Portsmouth youngster Freddie Read.

THe 18-year-old midfielder agreed terms at Nyewood Lane after being released from Fratton Park.

Read got a taste of life at Bostik Premier level last season when he made a handful of appearances on loan with the Rocks.

And it was that affinity, along with a desire to get first team experience of men's football, that led to him making the permanent move along the south coast.

Pearce, who will manage the team with Robbie Blake next season, is delighted with the signing, adding: “We have agreed terms with Freddie and we are delighted he is joining us.

"We saw glimpses of his capabilities last season and we hope to help him develop."

THe addition of the youngster, who also played some loan games at Gosport Borough last term, means the Rocks squad is growing fast.

Another former Pompey player, Dan Smith, is teaming up with the Nyewood Lane outfit.

THe signing of the striker is on the back of the recent recruitment of ex-Rocks playmaker Stu Green from AFC Totton and confirmation that last season’s top scorer, Jimmy Muitt, is also set to stay.

Captain Harvey Whyte and defender Keaton Wood are others who have agreed new terms.

THey join Doug Tuck, James Crane and Ashton Leigh to have put pen to paper.

Pearce said: "THe players we have managed to bring in so far gives us great encouragement going in to the new season."

Paine in as Pagham manager PAGHAM FC have moved quickly to replace departing manager Tom Simmonds by appointing the experienced Bob Paine.

Chairman Tony Shea announced the news less than a week after the being told Simmonds would not be returning to the dugout at Nyetimber Lane for the coming season for personal reasons.

Paine will be joined at the club by Craig Stuart and Tom Henton, both of whom were with him in his previous role at East Preston.

His first task will be to assemble a squad which can meet the club's aim of challenging at the top end of the SCFL Premier while challenging for cup silverware.

It will be no easy task as the Lions will need to rebuild after a dramatic loss of form in the second half of the season saw them drop into the bottom half of the table.

Shea will no doubt want Paine to use his experience within the Worthing youth setup to develop a talented crop of youngsters who are coming through at the Lions.

After helping establish the under 21s side at Worthing, within two years he helped the side win the Ryman Under-21 South Division and reach the final of the Sussex Intermediate Cup.

After departing Woodside Road, Paine took charge of East Preston in the summer of 2016, guiding the club back into SCFL Premier at the first attempt following relegation to Division One. Under his guidance, the Lashmar outfit finished 14th in the SCFL Premier last

season, four points behind Pagham in the standings.

THe departing manager also introduced under-18 and under-23 teams during his three-year tenure. He left Lashmar this summer after being informed his "services were no longer required".

Hundreds finish the first ever Centurion Country 5 THE first annual Centurion Country Five has been hailed a big success as nearly 300 runners took to the South Downs for the Chichester Runners event.

Held in place of the Midsummer Five, there was a friendly feel to proceedings as runners from across the south took part in the five mile race from Lavant Memorial Hall.

First home was Harry Leleu, the Chichester Runners representative sealing a win on home turf in a time of 25 minutes 47.

He was followed closely

by Jacob O’Hara (City of Portsmouth) and James Baker (Chi) in 26:06 and 26:39 respectively.

Chi also took the women's crown too as Beth Garland crossed the line in 29:05, making her eighth overall.

Sara Willhoit (Shrewsbury AC) and Kari Mack (Bognor Tone Zone) were next home in 29:32 and 31:19 respectively.

It was a good evening for the Tone Zone competitors as more than 40 donned the blue and orange for the event.

First club runner home and ninth overall was Sean Power in a very impressive time of 29:31, which also secured second in the under 20 age category.

He was followed by Christo Oosthuizen, finishing a minute behind Power, who took the over 50s category.

THen came through Danny Mahoney who was second in his category finishing in 33:22, one second ahead of Duncan Stephenson-Gill who was 26

seconds ahead of Paul Jarvis.

Carolyn Stapley was fifth in her age category, finishing just ahead of Gary Smith in 34:58.

THere was a close fought battle between Sarah Zacal, Keith Hardwell and Glenn Penfold with Sarah edging ahead of both Hardwell and Penfold.

Martin Playford ran a very strong race from start to finish to finish in 39:14 ahead of Tony Holcombe, Peter Ramsdale and Neil Pacey.

Natalie Tribe, Marzena Sowinska and Lucy JanyeIsitt all finished under 45 minutes. Sarah Backer-Brown, Stephen Brown, Lea Hodgkins all finished just under the 50 minute mark.

THere was an equally good turnout last weekend for the David Lloyd Ultra Marathon, THere were three options for entrants -a 4 x 10 mile relay, 30 mile or 40 mile off-road event.

Six club runners completed the 30 mile course, including Anna Enes (5 hours 22 minutes), Andy Shill (6:14), Tony Holcombe (6:26), Cheryl Laing (7:18), Grace Natoli in (7:31) and Jude Bazeley (7:36).

Paul Coe was the only member from the club to run the 40 miles which had nearly 4,200 feet of elevation, finishing in 8 hours 25 minutes.

In the 4 x 10 mile team, the club finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall.

THe winners were THe Nifty Fifties,consisting of Christo Oosthuizen, Paul Jarvis, Trev Strowger and Duncan Stephenson-Gill finishing in 5 hours 18 minutes.
