Mrs Keegan has been campaigning to get St Richard’s Hospital equipped with a linac machine, which is used to administer radiotherapy treatment.

She asked: "Will the Prime Minister outline what steps the Government are taking to ensure that my constituents have the same access to medical care as others in adjacent counties?"

A CAFE which closed last year has reopened in Chichester and is being run by volunteers.

THe popular cafe in Florence Road, between Bognor Road and the B2144, had been run by Jo Millen for three years before it closed suddenly in August, 2018.

At the time Jo stated that they had not been supported and Chichester District Council did not renew their lease. THe council, however, said it was surprised at the closure and that it had "tried to be as accommodating as possible".

Now, the Apuldram Centre will be running the Florence Park Kiosk over the summer months until September 30.

THe kiosk is part of a wider partnership involving the parks community group and Clarion Futures.

Trainees from the Apuldram Centre will be supported to work in the kiosk to gain customer service skills.

Customers who have visited the cafe in the first few days have said it’s great the kiosk is back open and serving the community.

THe cafe is selling a wide range of snacks, hot and cold drinks and icecreams, and asking the community to support them in this venture by calling in at the kiosk, which will be open seven days a week.

THe Apuldram Centre is an independent registered charity, working to support adults with learning disabilities, and has delivered services in Chichester and the

surrounding area for 30 years.

Services include a dedicated day centre offering meaningful and enterprising daytime occupational activities such as horticultural, both on and off site, woodwork, cookery and arts and crafts.

THey also support a number of people in the Chichester area to live independently in their own tenancies.

Caroline Goodey, who is helping volunteer at the kiosk, said: "I'm here on a Friday all day. I've been doing some training and I am enjoying it here.

"I also volunteer once a month on a Friday at the Farmers Market, on the Appuldram Centre stall.

Roadworks at Portfield set to cause diversions and delays THE A27 Portfield scheme is now set to begin on Monday.

Diversions along the A27 Westhampnett bypass will be in place during the night of Monday, July 8, while the road is temporarily closed and traffic management measures – including the narrowing of the two lanes and the reduction of the speed limit to 50mph – are installed.

Works on the road will commence on Tuesday, which will involve dropping existing overhead extra high voltage cables to the ground and reconnecting them to the west of the new access junction into Shopwyke Lakes.

THis is expected to last approximately two weeks. While power will be disconnected during the works, it is not expected to affect local residents

or businesses surrounding the area.

THe third phase of forming the new junction will then commence, with works anticipated to last until late autumn.

THe roadworks are part of the wider A27 Portfield scheme, for the Shopwyke Lakes development to the A27 Chichester bypass, A27 Westhampnett bypass, Portfield Way, Shopwhyke Road and Oving Road.

THe planned works form part of the planning permission for the new Shopwyke Lakes development.

Which will bring 585 new homes and community facilities to Shopwhyke Road and are set to continue until autumn 2020.

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk READERS and fruit lovers were treated to a special talk by a herbalist on Saturday at Whyke Community Orchard.

‘Tales from the Orchard’ told by Steve Taylor, was a retelling of the old myths of the Green Man, about how the Golden Apple gives immortality, and where to find the healing herbs.

In the best storytelling tradition, Steve appealed to young and old alike with multi-layered stories, illustrated directly in the orchard with its crops of young

heritage apples and plums serving as the backdrop.

THe Community Orchard in Whyke offers a unique ambience as a place to breathe and relax a little, while being tantalised by intrigue and mystery. Who was it who stole fire? Which one of the gods ate their mother-in-law and more to the point, why?

Steve picked from his fund of stories and personalised the telling for those who turned up to hear him.

He drew on the ancient art of oral storytelling and weaved a web of mystery, just suitable for accompanied children from seven years upwards.

Last year, Steve was able to keep going for far longer than the hour billed, until at last the promoter of the event interposed into Steve’s reverie and brought his audience back to the real world with a promise of more to come.

Steve has been a herbalist for a long time. Having previously run the Medicine Garden in Emsworth, he’s consolidated his practice locally in Chichester with a dispensary and consulting room open three mornings a week.

Participants were invited to try elderflower cordial made from locally picked elderflowers and limeflower tea known for its de-stressing properties.

Mrs Keegan's contribution to the debate caught the attention of her colleagues and even attracted laughter as she told those in attendance a story about visiting her nan, saying: "I had just finished my first election campaign, contesting St Helens South and Whiston in 2015—as a Conservative—and wanted to show her my election leaflets.

"At the time, she was in the advanced stages of dementia. She looked at the photos and admired the different outfits I was wearing, but all of a sudden her face went as black as thunder when she realised I was standing as a Conservative. "'THat is not my party', she exclaimed. I said 'Goodness, nan, you can’t remember what you had for breakfast but you still remember that you’re Labour.'

"I went on to reassure her that we had never agreed on politics, and she seemed happy enough with that reply."

THe Chichester MP highlighted some of the work done locally at Sage House, Dementia Support, which is a unique, young charity based at Tangmere.

THey provide complete dementia services under one roof in a purposebuilt facility.

THe site is the only dementia care hub of its kind in the country and offer a unique wayfinding service to support people living with dementia, their families and carers, through their entire dementia journey from prediagnosis through to end of life.

Mrs Keegan also raised the work of Careline, the only West Sussex-based telecare monitoring service that provides technological solutions, like their ‘MindMe’ device, which tracks the movements of people suffering with dementia, offering peace of mind to patients, carers and their families.

` Body in canal A BODY which was found in Chichester Canal last THursday is not being treated as suspicious police have said.

Sussex Police attended the canal in Chichester after reports of a person's body in the water at around 11am on THursday, June 27.

At the time, a police spokesman said: "Sussex Police received a report of a body in Chichester canal in Stockbridge Road at 10.50am on THursday.

"An area cordon has been put in place while the body, with the assistance of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, is being retrieved."

Police said the death of the unknown man was not being treated as suspicious: "THis death is not being treated as suspicious and the coroner's officer will be continuing enquiries."

Mayor says that doing nothing isn't an option

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE city's mayor has said the council must do more after it recently embarked on two major initiatives - declaring a climate change emergency and a neighbourhood plan.

Cllr Richard Plowman said both were his priorities as they embraced the community.

"Like all cities in the UK, they are major challenges for the high street for retailing and coupled with the challenge of making Chichester carbon neutral by 2030 means we need to plan and adapt for the future."

THe mayor said that doing nothing was not an option and that Chichester had a lot going for it compared to some cities and was a great historic place.

He continued: "It also has some of the best brains in the country amongst the population, many are retired but bring with them a wealth of experience as do all the people of Chichester.

"I have been speaking to many of them and gathering ideas as we have the unique opportunity to create our own neighbourhood plan. THis plan, when approved, has real weight in planning law, it cannot be ignored."

Neighbourhood plans are produced and approved by the people before being adopted by the district council. THey are comprehensive, evidence-based and cover everything including infrastructure (roads, transport, education and medical and care facilities), environment, economy and well being.

Cllr Plowman said the plan needed to tackle the revitalisation of Chichester and climate change objectives as well as making the community thrive.

He has stated that one area that did not need to be tackled was where new houses were to go, as that had already been determined by the Local Plan.

Chichester City Council's planning and conservation meeting on June 26 unanimously recommended to go ahead with a neighbourhood plan covering all the city wards, with some 27,000 inhabitants.

Cllr Plowman continued: "THe Chichester Vision document forms a good basis for the direction although it was put together before the most recent high street situation as is the Southern Gateway Masterplan but it was felt you cannot just concentrate on the city centre as all the other parts of Chichester are interlinked and intermeshed particularly for getting people into the city through public transport, sustainable and safe pedestrian and cycle ways and joining up the wildlife corridors.

"THese are exciting times and we hope everybody in Chichester, including those who work here, will have their say and input into the Neighbourhood Plan. Let’s make a plan together that is inclusive for everybody, is the best we can make with the brains and energy of the people of Chichester, restores civic pride and makes it the best place for our children and their children to grow up in and enjoy.

"It will take at least 18 months to complete and it will be hard work but the rewards for us will be worth it."

Goodwood rewarded by the RAF Benevolent Fund for top support THE outstanding support from an organisation award was won by Goodwood at the RAF Benevolent Fund’s annual awards ceremony.

THe award recognises those organisations that the fund receives dedicated support from, year after year, not only in raising vital funds but also acting as advocates, spreading the word about the work the charity does.

THe RAF Benevolent Fund was chosen beneficiary for the 2018 Goodwood Revival, resulting in a generous donation of £45,465. THis was raised through daily bucket collections and proceeds from the charity ball held on the festival’s Saturday evening.

Air Vice-Marshal David Murray, chief executive at the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: "Huge congratulations

THe festival entitled ‘In quires and places where they sing’ - a quote from a prayer book, was the theme depicted in the flower arrangements - which were held in the beautiful priory church in Boxgrove on Friday, Saturday and Sunday last week.

THe flower arrangements each represented an anthem from the choral repertoire and were arranged by Boxgrove’s own team of arrangers, with others from the cathedral and other Sussex parishes.

"A good number of people came to see the displays, and seemed both impressed and captivated by the beauty of it all," said the parish Priest, Father Ian Forrester.

Commenting on the choir concert, which was given by the well-regarded Priory Choir, Fr Ian went on to say: "It was a brilliant concert which was directed by Alex Dichmont and accompanied

by Matthew Cooke.

"THe choir produced a fine sound across a variety of styles.

"In these days we have celebrated the beauty of God’s creative gifts, and many have

volunteers and organisers with matching aprons which Fr Peter nicknamed as 'a-blaise' with colour, after Saint Blaise.

He said: "It was a lovely community event with the flower arrangers of the priory, clubs, friends and visitors.

'It was a really jolly weekend, one of the happiest I have done and it was a delight working with everyone. Just a very happy and lovely occasion."

Duke of Richmond opens trust's new HQ A DECADE of dreaming has formally ended at an Aldingbourne site.

THe Duke of Richmond declared the headquarters of the Aldingbourne Trust formally open in his role as the charity's patron.

THe ceremony and celebration at the £4m Quarry Building at the Aldingbourne Country Centre was the result of planning by the trust which dates back to 2009.

THe Duke of Richmond said: "THe Quarry Building is the culmination of 10 years of designing, securing support, funding and construction.

"It offers a new vision for social care - where local businesses, the community and people who have learning disabilities and/or autism can learn, work and prosper.

"It's a model which is attracting international attention. THe impressive building is a new West Sussex gem which I would encourage everyone

to visit."

THe Duke's family have supported the Aldingbourne Trust, for many years. His father opened the centre's wood recycling project in 2006.

Some of this wood is powering the threestorey Quarry Building, which came into use last September.

THe country centre is in Blackmill Lane, just north of the A27. It boasts an indoor slide, a cafe, meeting rooms and a shop for members of the public to use.

Two of the centre's members, Sean Simmonds and James Weller, spoke to the guests about how much they enjoy being involved with all the opportunities on offer at the centre and their pride in the Quarry Building.

James said: "THe new building means a lot to me. It is a place to chat to the public, a place to work, have fun and learn new skills."

` Police reports DURING the week from Monday, June 17, to Sunday, June 23, a number of arrests were carried out. Offences included: domestic violence assault, actual bodily harm, shoplifting, burglary, handling stolen goods, possession of class A drugs, theft of a cycle, harassment, managing a brothel, dangerous driving and taking a vehicle without consent.

Numerous other reports were made to police, which include: In Church Road, Singleton, on Wednesday, June 19, police received a report of a burglary to a commercial premises. Serial 0160 19/6.

In Vicars Close, Chichester, also on the Wednesday, police received a report of a daytime burglary.

Entry was via a kitchen window that was smashed. A handbag and other personal possessions were stolen from the property. Serial 0398 19/6.

On THursday, June 20, police received a report that a vehicle was broken into overnight on June 16/17, in Kensington Road, Chichester.

Some personal possessions were stolen from the vehicle. Serial 0113 20/6.

In Florence Road, Chichester, on THursday, a vehicle was broken into and a number of gift cards stolen. Serial 0639 20/6.

In East Street, Chichester, on Friday, June 21, police received a report of an attempted break-in to a commercial premises. Damage was caused to the window and door but no entry was gained.

` SDNP Local Plan LANDSCAPE and the needs of local communities are central to the new South Downs National Park Local Plan which was adopted by Members on Tuesday.

THe plan covers the entire National Park for the next 14 years and rather than being 'target driven', the policies in the plan are based on the nationally-designated landscape.

THe plan sets out measures to mitigate climate change including that any major new developments should seek to be carbon neutral, have better drainage schemes to reduce flood risk and limit water consumption for new developments.

Margaret Paren, Chair of South Downs National Park Authority, said: “THis is a significant moment for the South Downs National Park and our local communities.

“Our adopted Local Plan puts our nationally important landscapes first and ensures that they sit at the heart of every planning decision we make. But, while our first priority is to conserve and enhance the landscape, this Local Plan goes one step further by clearly outlining how we will nurture a living, thriving landscape that benefits local people and looks to increase resilience to climate change.

“THe Local Plan includes over 50 Neighbourhood Plans developed

by South Downs’ communities which provide local development management policies and allocate land for development. We are grateful to all those who spent so much time assisting us in developing the Local Plan."

Student inspires city hair salon to make prom dreams come true

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN INSPIRATIONAL Chichester student’s pioneering charity scheme to provide prom dresses and shoes for less-fortunate youngsters has been given a welcome boost by the city’s leading hair salon.

Q Hair and Beauty joined forces with Dresses and Dreams to make sure young promgoers look fabulous on the big night by offering to do their hair and make-up free of charge.

Megan Jaclyn Smith, 21, who is taking a degree in social work at the University of Portsmouth, has established Dresses and Dreams to give girls in care the opportunity to enjoy a night that students look forward to throughout their time at school.

Megan said: "When teenage girls are in either residential children’s homes or foster care, they do not receive funding from the local authority for prom dresses, transport or hair and make-up.

"Prom is such a big thing in teenage culture. I want to make sure that every single girl, no matter their background, feels empowered and beautiful on their special night."

She has had unique prom dresses in a stunning array of different sizes, colours, brands and designs donated from all over the country, even as far away as Newcastle.

Megan also appealed to local businesses to support her charity and Q Hair and Beauty was quick to offer its services, from individual hair and make-up to master classes.

"We are truly inspired by Megan’s creative idea to help provide dresses and shoes for proms," said Dawn Lawrence Grant, managing director of Q Hair and Beauty.

"It’s an expensive business these days and it’s wonderful to see these dresses being re-used, creating less waste and helping at the same time. When I heard about Megan’s appeal I just felt inspired to help.

"I took a leaf out of her book and thought okay, so what can we do to help her complete her own dream?

So we met up and discussed offering initially complimentary prom hair services in the salon, with a view of looking ahead and as it becomes more popular, offering workshops so the girls can learn at the same time.

"It is a very exciting project and we will be there to support Dresses and Dreams for the long-term."

Megan is delighted with the support from Q, especially as it looks ahead and could help many more girls in the future.

"I am so grateful to have the support from Q Hair and Beauty, a great local business with years and years of supportive charity work,” she said.

"THe next thing on my list is organising a photo shoot to display the dresses

available for this year’s prom and I hope that, by next year, I can venture out even further and provide the same opportunity for boys."

Every dog has it's day as rescue centre hosts first summer show in five years

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SCORCHING temperatures didn't prevent dogs and their owners from attending a special event hosted by Mount Noddy.

RSPCA Sussex Chichester and District branch, Mount Noddy, is self-funded and relies on the generosity of those living in the Post area.

THe Noddy-Fest! event was the first summer show held by the animal rehoming centre in around five years.

THe field, next to RSPCA Mount Noddy Animal Centre in Eartham, was opened up for parking for the event, which saw local businesses and the community coming together.

Visitors were able to browse the many stalls which included beautifully crafted ceramic creations by Lindy Ceramics, life-like pictures by a pet portrait artist, human smellies from Tropic Skincare and delicious dog treats from Snaffles.

Dogs were well looked after in the high temperatures, with Arun Vets team on hand, water bowls scattered across the venue, a big pool for dogs to splash in and wet towels for those over-heating.

THere was also a cleverly designed doggy-calming area for those wanting a snooze in the shade, under the shelter of a large tree.

Miranda Batterbee from nearby Sussex County Dog Training and her team were

on hand with demonstrations of flyball and agility and visitors could take part in both of those and teach their dog a trick. THere was also a very popular Sussex Search Dog demonstration and, of course, the dog show.

Four-legged friends were entered into various categories including most handsome male, prettiest bitch, best rescue, dog judges would most like to take home, golden oldie (eight years plus), waggiest tail and best in show.

Prizes, which included a selection of scrummy dog bites, were donated by Pet Warehouse in Runcton.

Visitors were also encouraged to bring any of their shop donations to a special drop-off point in the car park to help raise more funds for the animal centre.

Karen Stevens attended with her husband, Graham, and their five-yearold daughter, Izzy.

Karen said: "We don't have a dog but we do really admire the work which Mount Noddy does. THe volunteers in their charity shop in Chichester are all very friendly and helpful and we often go in there for a browse.

"We live in a flat so a dog isn't an option for us but it doesn't stop us coming and enjoying a lovely day out and Izzy loves animals.

"THe weather is a bit too hot really but the volunteers here have been amazing, making sure all the dogs' welfare has come first before anything else.

THey've had wet towels at the ready and I don't think I have ever seen so many bowls of water anywhere."

Business and income generations manager, Clare Palmer, said it was their first summer event in five years.

"Noddy-fest went ahead despite the hot weather, with many extra dog paddling pools, water bowls and shaded areas to keep the visiting furry friends cool.

"Flyball, agility and a fun dog show were on the agenda, supported by Sussex County Dog Training. We also had over 24 local traders selling crafts and dog-related items, plus our own stands raising money for the branch.

"Over ÂŁ2,400 was raised and this helps our dogs and cats awaiting new homes at Mount Noddy, to feel comfortable and well cared for in their time with us.

"We are a self-funded branch so events and fundraising are important ways to generate income and find new supporters. We hope to continue the event each summer, making it bigger and better each year.

"We would like to thank all the visitors to the event and everyone who donated and volunteered to help make it a success."

` City street party CHICHESTER Business Improvement District (BID) have announced that plans to hold a street party as part of their Love Local, Shop Local summer campaign are now underway.

Taking place on THursday, August 22, from 4pm to 8pm, East Street and North Street will be transformed into a thriving festival of late night shopping, festivities and food which will extend across the city centre.

A spokesman for the BID said: "We are working in partnership with Chichester District Council to create this exciting summer evening event.

"Plans include a wealth of entertainment for all ages from a carousel to face painting.

Visitors will also be able to relax in deckchairs around the city and enjoy a whole host of street food vendors to celebrate the city’s culinary offering. Spirit FM will also be broadcasting live from East Street throughout the event.

"We really need your support to make the Street Party a success and to encourage people to come and enjoy a special summer evening of shopping and exploring our city.

You can get involved by keeping your business open so visitors can find you, you could also maximise the opportunity by holding in-store events or special offers to coincide with the street party."

A healthy stop for a burger

A CARPENTER from Chichester has packed up his tools and turned his hand to a new venture in the form of a burger van.

Jamie Favata came into some inheritance and decided to take over the Fuel Stop Cafe on the A27.

THe traditional burger van has been there for 40 years but recently the erratic opening hours and constant closure meant a lot of the trade was lost.

Jamie decided to pack in his job as a carpenter and took a Level 2 Food and Hygiene Course and bought the business.

He said: "I came into a bit of a money and fancied a change so I bought it. It was previously only open twice a week and would often close at around 11am so I saw the potential."

Jamie has decided to re-brand the business but keep the catchy name by introducing healthier and better quality food, locally sourced.

He continued: "THe traditional burger van isn't great. I wanted to put my own take on it and source healthier food.

"THe sausages are fat free because they are made from 100 per cent pork belly and the casing is organic.

"THe burgers are made from grassfed beef and it's all sourced from Winchester and Salisbury.

"I was asked by a few truck drivers for jacket potatoes so I bought an oven. A lot of them are actually on diets so my food is popular."

Jamie purchased the van and has spent a lot of money and time to spruce it up.

College library team's social media award

City's Kew is top branch in the UK THE Chichester branch of electrical wholesaler Kew Electrical has been named best individual branch in the UK. THe award-winning electrical wholesaling company has had a branch in Chichester since 2003 and now employs 18 people in the town.

Speaking from the company headquarters in Brighton, deputy managing director Nik Mulcahy said: “We started in Chichester from scratch. We did not inherit or buy a business, but a lot of the staff knew the area already because they’d worked for other wholesalers in the area.”

Kew has enjoyed a record amount of business in the town in recent months, said branch manager.

Nik said Kew’s reputation helped it hold its own against its new competitors. “THe reputation we have in Chichester does not happen overnight. It’s taken years and years of relationship building, groundwork and knowledge of the area."

“Our staff have intimate knowledge of the customer base, they know what customers want. THey stock the right products for that town. THey have working relationships with individual customers over a long period of time so they virtually become friends.

“It’s taken years of reputation building to get to the point where we can say Chichester is one of the best electrical wholesaling branches in any town in the country.”

THE library team at the Chichester College Group has won a prestigious national award.

THe team picked up the CoLRic (Council for Learning Resources in Colleges) best practice award in the marketing and social media category, in recognition of the outstanding content they have been producing through the @ CCGLibrary Twitter account.

THe account – set up at the start of the year – has gone from strength to strength, as it highlights resources available for students and staff in a variety of imaginative ways.

picture of their pets with books, to advocating literacy through five word storytelling – the team have seen their presence at both Chichester and Brinsbury colleges grow, with more students using the service.

Jo McKenna-Aspell, library resource assistant, has been spearheading the group’s presence on social media.

She said: “We were over the moon to discover we had won this award. It means a lot to the team across all of our libraries.

“We started the account as a way to promote the library service internally initially – with the growth of the college group, there was a concern that the service could become increasingly invisible. We couldn’t let that happen.

“And thanks in no small part to our

social media presence and host of engaging activities in the libraries, we have seen the service grow – but we couldn’t have predicted the way people have responded to us.

“We are very lucky to have a four-legged librarian (William, our library therapy dog), who has shamelessly posed for many of our promotional campaigns – and staff and students have responded with so much positivity.

“We really feel that we are actively contributing to the Chichester College Group’s mission of ‘changing lives through learning’."

In its award citation, the library service was praised for ‘exemplifying the very good practice taking place in FE and sixth form college learning resources services to improve outcomes for students’.

Homeless crisis WEST SUSSEX County Council has been warned it is ‘sleepwalking into a potentially catastrophic situation’ over the services it offers to vulnerable adults.

By April, 2020, the council will have cut its housing related support budget by £4m to £2.3m, with a review of the contracts it runs being held in September.

THe cuts left service providers such as Stonepillow in shock, with concerns about the consequences for homeless people, vulnerable adults and older people.

At a meeting of the health and adult social care select committee (HASC) earlier this month, members were told that thousands of people needed the services, a figure Cllr Dr James Walsh described as ‘staggeringly shocking’.

THe council was recently on the receiving end of a damning Ofsted report, which rated its children’s services ‘inadequate’, followed closely by a highly critical report into its fire and rescue services.

Cllr Walsh was loath to see the bad news continue. He said: “My view is that we are, as a select committee and a council, sleep walking into a potentially

catastrophic situation for West Sussex.

“We had a very critical review of Ofsted of the children’s services of this county council. I don’t want to be here in two or three years’ time when we have a similar outside body coming and telling us that we’ve failed in our duty across the public service.”

THe meeting was provided with details of which were likely to receive funding after September and which were not.

Funding to support older people in their homes was listed as ‘unlikely’ to continue, while support for homeless exoffenders was described as ‘not a priority for funding’.

THe task and finish group has been working with consultants Snook – ‘who specialise in trying to unravel systems and how they work’ – to look at and understand the current and future needs of the county’s homeless community.

After hearing about the budget cuts, the service providers banded together to form a coalition, attending workshops with the task and finish group and being kept informed about the approach being taken.

` Unwanted guns

New recruits WEST SUSSEX Fire & Rescue Service has welcomed nine new retained (oncall) firefighters to its ranks following an intensive two week training programme.

Having been put through their paces in the yard at Worthing Fire Station they welcomed family and friends to a pass out parade on Friday, June 21.

THey will now join the crews at a number of fire stations across the county to provide on-call support. Many of the new recruits have full-time jobs elsewhere in their communities. Living or working in close proximity the station, they can be paged at any time of the day to respond to an emergency situation.

THe course marked a return to West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service for Chris Relf, who will be joining the ranks of East Wittering Fire Station in addition to his day job at West Sussex Alternative Provisions College in North Mundham, having previously served at Bosham Fire Station.

He said: "THe best thing is the

camaraderie, we are all in it together.

Having done it before I would definitely advise anyone to give it a go. Everyone looks out for each other and you get to do some really, really interesting things."

Galo David Choez Loor is the newest recruit to join Chichester Fire Station.

Living and working in the city at a coffee shop, he was keen to explore something new.

He said: "I love helping people, that was one of my main incentives for doing this.

“I would encourage anyone who wants to become an on call firefighter to do so. It is a hard course but it is really rewarding, and it gives you real skills for life. You study and work with people from different backgrounds so you get to meet a lot of different people."

People in possession of unwanted guns or ammunition are being encouraged to hand them in as part of a campaign to make Sussex safer.

Many firearms are held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality, or are overlooked and forgotten in people’s homes. Others are acquired and distributed by criminal networks to harm, threaten and intimidate their local communities.

THis appeal gives people the chance to dispose of firearms or ammunition by simply handing them in at their local police station – a list of opening times and locations can be found below.

During the surrender period, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for illegal possession of a firearm at the point of surrender of the firearm to lawful authority, and they can remain anonymous.

However, this surrender does not mean police will not investigate firearms offences, should any come to light, once the operation has concluded.

THis is a firearms surrender; not a firearms amnesty, and police are committed to reduce the harm to our communities from firearms crime.

THe surrender, which runs from Monday to Sunday, August 4, forms part of a national campaign by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS).

THe aim of the operation, is to reduce the number of illegally held firearms in circulation.

Charity's unique dementia service A CHARITY which works in Bognor Regis and Chichester has released a new film about the impact living with dementia has on families.

THe film, made by Dementia Support, looks at Ann and Bob, a couple from the area, who have been affected by dementia and hugely benefited from the support provided by the charity.

Bob was diagnosed back in 2014 and, since becoming his primary carer, Ann felt increasingly isolated and swamped with leaflets.

She found comfort in Sage House, Dementia Support's care centre in Tangmere.

Ann said: “If we hadn’t found Dementia Support, I would never have been able to find the support Jacquie, my Wayfinder, has put in place.

"THere was nowhere we could go before Sage House was open.

"I can talk to people, Bob can talk to people, and if I’m not coping well, I know I can come to Dementia Support.”

THe unique Wayfinders provide support for families and help them find their way through the dementia journey. A Wayfinder is an individual who will supply personalised guidance for people with dementia and their families.

Dementia Support recently launched its £1m Wayfinder Appeal

to expand their services into the community.

Dementia Support, set up in 2014, currently only reaches 10 per cent of people living with dementia and the appeal will go towards more Wayfinder appointments, along with activity opportunities such as yoga mats for THai Chi sessions.

THe charity hopes to take away the inevitable stress that comes when bombarded with information and forms after a diagnosis.

Sage House was opened in May last year by the Countess of Wessex. THe centre offers information and advice, as well as day care, activities, and therapy rooms.

It also offers a smart zone, using innovative technology to help individuals keep up to date with the latest technology while still keeping their independence.

Figures produced by West Sussex County Council and the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group estimates that there are currently 14,820 people living in West Sussex with dementia.

THis number is set to increase a further 26 per cent by 2021.

As one in six people over the age of 80 currently has dementia in the UK, the charity aims to give quality care to help reduce loneliness for those living with, or caring for someone with, dementia.

Council return dental toolkit

THe dental toolkit is part of the West Sussex sugar reduction programme.

It has seen the council’s public health team work alongside the Local Dental Committee, Health Education England and Public Health England to develop the toolkit for dentists to help promote a healthier lifestyle for patients.

THis work has raised awareness of the harms of sugar on teeth and its effect on general health; too much sugar can lead to an internal build-up of harmful fat.

THe presence of this fat around vital organs can cause weight gain and serious diseases in the future, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

First launched in May, 2018, the fourweek pilot ran in 12 dental practices across West Sussex.

Aligned to the national Change4Life and ‘top tips for teeth’ campaigns, the toolkit included badges, stickers, promotional materials, social media links and prescription pads supporting dental teams to promote sugar reduction awareness among patients.

Patients were also directed to healthy lifestyle services within their local wellbeing hub for more support if required.

Following the success of the pilot, it was named a national award winner at the Public Health England Conference in Warwick. And now it is being rolled out to all dentists across the county in a bid to promote better dental health among residents.

Children across the country are eating an extra 2,800 sugar cubes a year, which is more than double the recommended

amount.

Too much sugar is bad for children’s health and can also cause painful tooth decay. Every 10 minutes, a child in England has a tooth removed in hospital.

Cllr Amanda Jupp, the county council’s cabinet member for adults and health, said: “I know our public health team has been working remarkably hard on the dental toolkit, so it is incredibly rewarding to see it receive such a positive response from dentists across the county.

"THere are some really straightforward steps that all of us can take to help improve our dental health which will prevent bigger problems further down the line.

“I hope everyone who visits their dentist will be able to embrace this initiative and take it forward into their everyday lives.”

Goodwood offers free cricket to all

Dear Editor, I was saddened by the Ofsted report highlighted in last week’s Chichester Post alleging inadequacy in the performance of Rumboldswhyke Infants School.

However, I feel the report may tell us more about inspection and out of school administration issues than the reality experienced by children at this rather good little school.

Within the report it is stated that a high proportion of parents responded to the 'parent view' question and that 100 per cent of those respondents were positive in their support for the school and the education provided for their children.

THis was apparently reflected in pupils “feeling happy and enjoying school”.

I don’t think you can fool parents, nor their children, in these matters – if they are happy with “lively and engaging teaching” that’s what they are getting on a day-by-day basis. You don’t get that sort of response when parents generally believe their children’s school to be inadequate.

THat doesn’t mean that there weren’t problems at Rumboldswhyke, nor does it mean that action should not be taken.

It seems that such a system pretty well sets up any school to face extreme pressure, and almost make for failure.

Of course, this inspection regime should take place within the broader context of a supportive educational administration that actively helps teachers to do a good job. But this doesn’t appear to have been the case.

THe report states that the head teacher is presently “on long-term sickness absence”. THe administrative response seems to have been to get the deputy head teacher to take over the head’s job in addition to their own role – but with “little preparation”. So, one committed professional crumbles under the strain and is “replaced” by another who is expected to do that work as well as their own. I don’t think you have to be an educational expert to guess the likely outcome would be “considerable turbulence”.

But now that the worst has happened – and an” inadequate” report is the worst that can happen to a school’s reputation – is it not obvious that intervention by county and diocesan authorities to ensure support for Rumboldswhyke’s leaders should have been made some years ago? If that had happened, maybe this situation would never have arisen.

Dear Editor, One of the areas where people can make a considerable contribution to climate change is Basin Road.

THere is nearly always an endless stream of cars, buses and heavy goods vehicles, which, when at standstill waiting for a train at the crossing, fail to kill their engines.

THere are schoolchildren coming to and from school and young children in push chairs.

When I walk up the road I can smell the pollution. I wondered how the small child in the push chair felt sitting at the same level as the exhaust fumes as they find their way into his chest?

Isn’t about time the council, instead of talking about it, actually did something about it?

Talk, Disused Railways of Sussex. David Bathurst will be presenting a talk on exploring the disused railways of Sussex, as part of the Festival of Chichester. It will give a brief overview of all the now defunct railways in Sussex. Music will be provided by the Boxgrove-based a-cappella choir Cavatina, with a variety of unaccompanied songs, many on a transport-related theme. Comedy, Laughing McGeorge.

Four more emerging comedians are bringing their Edinburgh Fringe shows for Felpham audiences to hear before travelling north. Today (Friday, July 5), Matt Hoss is first on at THe George at 8pm, followed by Janet Garner and Paul Cox with their set titled Common People (Again). THe following week, July 12, sees Spaniard Sonia Aste, who now lives in the UK, with Made in Spain 2, on stage before Joe Jacobs.

Folk music, Merry Hell. Merry Hell are a six-piece acoustic folk/rock band founded on the ever-evolving folk tradition – music made by the people and shared by the people. Five albums and nine years on the road constantly gigging, have meant these guys have served their apprenticeship and are ready and eager to take Grayshott Village Hall, on the Hampshire border near Hindhead, by storm. Art, Ivon Hitchens: Space Through Colour. A fresh look at one of Britain’s most admired modern artists, whose paintings brought continental colour to the English landscape, has opened at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, until October 13.

Ivon Hitchens (1893 – 1979) is muchloved for his landscape paintings featuring swathes of bright colour, many

painted in the open air surrounding his secluded Sussex home. Yet there is more to the artist than the post-war work for which he is best known. THis exhibition, the largest on Hitchens since 1989, considers the whole scope of the British painter’s career, which spanned six decades.

Submerge yourself in an emotional ride Theatre review 

THe raw emotion in the main character, Hester Collyer, played by Nancy Carroll, was felt through her incredible portrayal of a woman hopelessly in love and loved but perhaps not the way she wishes.

THe play is set in 1951, in a shabby Ladbroke Grove flat where Hester’s neighbours find her unconscious; she has taken an overdose in front of the gas fire.

THeir only option is to notify her husband, Sir William Collyer – a pillar of the establishment.

But Hester left her husband the previous year to embark upon a passionate love affair with dashing ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page. What has happened in her life to make her want to end it? And can she

bring herself to go on living?

Director Paul Foster perfectly stages turmoil and post-war hardship. Likewise Gerald Kyd (Bill Collyer) and Hadley Fraser (Freddie Page) opposites in extremes from their costumes through to their charisma and the way in which they love Hester.

Fraser shows a clever portrayal of a man suffering from his own insecurities and failures combining with a reliance on alcohol to drown them out while Kyd is a judge with a Rolls-Royce, successful career,

self confidence and dignity.

THe supporting cast seemed to lack in as much credibility as the three main characters, aside from Denise Black, as Mrs Elton, who enjoys a good gossip but with her heart in the right place and Matthew Cottle as Mr Miller, the doctor who speaks frankly but sincerely to help Hester see sense.

Deep Blue Sea is a thrilling performance combining heartache, passion, intimacy and frustration.

Nature inspires fine performances Music review

by Alicia Denny Eight Seasons & A Blackbird Chichester Cathedral THursday, June 27 NATURE in all its infinite variety has been the source of inspiration for many composers over the centuries and one of the favourite concertos of all time is THe Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi.

A vivacious and stirring yet melodious performance of this classic by the Celoniatus Ensemble, led by the hugely-talented Harriet Mackenzie, was the first of six events organised by Amici Concerts for the Festival of Chichester, at the Cathedral.

THe appreciative audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance of the baroque 'Seasons', which is normally heard with a full orchestra behind the

soloist. It was refreshingly bright to have just ten musicians, and closer to the original sound.

After the interval, the blackbird of the concert's title - Eight Seasons and a Blackbird - appeared in a light but interesting piece again evoking the natural world by Canadian composer Emily Doolittle, conjuring up a blackbird singing in the rain, interpreted through Harriet's skilful musicality.

Contrasting but, at the same time, complementing the first two items, Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires was a refreshing piece of modern music. It was complex, busy and fascinating, with shades of tango and jazz as well as a nod to Vivaldi, the ensemble brought passion to the piece as well as showing some unusual versatility with their instruments, such as the string bassist who created percussive effects.

If the other performances being mounted by Amici are anything like the standard of this opener, music lovers following festival events are in for a number of treats.

Gifted youngsters for charity concert Midsummer Charity Concert Chichester Baptist Church, Sherborne Road, Chichester PO19 3AW Saturday, July 6, 7.30pm CHICHESTER Baptist Church will be hosting a charity concert in aid of Lifecentre, the Chichester-based charity supporting survivors of rape and sexual abuse, organised by the chairman of Bognor Regis Music Club, Chris Coote.

He said: “THe concert will include a wide selection of music by gifted performers with a local connection.

Sixteen-year-old Bognor-based cellist James Dew, who plays in the National Youth orchestra and attends the junior department of the Royal College of Music, will play Frescobaldi’s Toccata.

"Soprano Olivia Moss, who recently won the Gus Christie prize for outstanding performer at the Glyndebourne Academy, will sing

popular songs and opera arias

by Mozart, Brahms and Debussy.

Mezzo-soprano Tina Gelnere, who studies for a post graduate course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and recently sang a solo part for the Welsh National Opera, will sing operatic solos and join Olivia in well-loved duets.

"Euphonium player Martin Smith will play some delightful arrangements on his unusual but beautiful sounding instrument, pianist Mark Zarb-Adami will play Chopin’s Heroic Polonaise and Ian Clark will sing songs from shows.

To complete the programme, the Full House Wind Quartet, comprising clarinettist Spence Bundy, bassoonist Alison Woodward, flautist Gerda Wilcocks and oboist Clare THorntonWood, will play works for wind quartet.”

Chris added “It is a privilege to be able to present and accompany such a talented group of performers in aid

of such a worthwhile cause.”

THe concert is at the church in Sherborne Road, on Saturday, July 6, at 7.30pm, as part of the Festival of Chichester. Entry is free as are refreshments and a retiring collection will be taken for Lifecentre.

Businesses back night of top opera Opera Night Friday, July 12, 7.30pm AN outstanding night of opera, featuring world-class performances from superbly talented and nationally acclaimed opera singers, is in prospect for Bognor Regis audiences.

Opera Night is a development of the ‘60 Minutes of Classical Music’ concert series, organised by classically trained resident Roger Clayden. Bognor Regis Business Improvement District (BID) has worked in partnership with Roger to help bring three of the country’s top opera singers to perform at the event.

BID chairman Paul Wells said: “THe BID is committed to maximising the cultural offering in the town centre and the Opera Night is one of a number of events including the South Downs Folk Festival - that we are delighted to support in 2019.

With the thunder of hooves and the clash of metal on metal, jousting champions from around the world will be descending on Arundel Castle for the Medievel Jousting Week, July 23-28, when knights on horseback challenge each other for the title of champion.

More than 200 costumed characters will be

involved in demonstrating crafts, falconry and cooking from the period.

For the first time, THe Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton, north of Chichester, is hosting a full six-week summer season of plays, opera, music and film in

Blooming good

All Saints Church, Findon Valley, Worthing, with St Peter’s High Salvington, is holding a flower festival on July 13 and 14, alongside open gardens in the community. On the Saturday, the church is open 10am-5pm plus a table sale, raffle and tombola with refreshments in the adjacent hall. Gardens are open 1-5 pm.

On Sunday, the flower festival is open from 1-5pm, followed by a Songs of Praise service at 6pm. Entry is £5 for adults, children free, inclusive all weekend.

Family fun

With 50 years passing since the first manned landing on the moon, Chichester's Planetarium is hosting some special events.

MoonFest! is a series of events hosted by THe South Downs Planetarium to educate and entertain residents and visitors of all ages.

THe Planetarium is located to the south of the city of Chichester, by the campus of the High School.

With its 100-seater auditorium, colourful displays and well-stocked sales kiosk, the Planetarium has something for would-be astronauts and stargazers aged six years and above.

THe museum is on part of the site of a major base used by the Royal Air Force and its predecessor, the Royal Flying Corps, from 1918 until its final closure in 1970.

It became famous during the Second World War when it was a centre for pilots fighting in the Battle of Britain.

Many secret service agents were dropped into occupied France from aircraft flown from Tangmere and, after the war, several air speed records were set by pilots from the airfield.

Displays relating to these historic achievements are among the many fascinating exhibits in the museum but visitors are also thrilled to see aircraft in the two hangars.

Several are on loan from the Royal Air Force Museum, including the Hawker Hunter used

by Neville Duke to break the airspeed record in 1953.

Tangmere Military  Aviation Museum is located in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane, help to recreate the atmosphere of the RAF station's most important period. THere are also many relevant artefacts linked to the pilots who fought so valiantly in their aircraft.

A dozen jet aircraft spanning the decades after the war can be appreciated by visitors as well as several cockpits and engines so that the technical developments can be admired.

A Westland helicopter and simulators for both adults and children to try are among the other attractions.

Light refreshments are available in the wartime-style tea room at this volunteer-run museum, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

Museum was born when a group of like-minded enthusiasts met to discuss ways of keeping the memory of RAF Tangmere alive.

Tasty trend for gastropubs

started in 1990s The word (or words) gastropub - a combination of gastronomy and public house - entered everyday English in the 1990s and was defined as a pub serving good quality food, wine and beer.

FOR centuries, inns and pubs had served food but often the menu was limited and either cold, such as sandwiches, pasties and ploughman's lunch, or 'pub grub', a label including everything with chips - ham and egg, pies, sausages or other simple dishes.

In 1984, Spinnakers Brew Pub opened in Victoria, British Columbia, the first custom-built brewpub in Canada. It heralded a new wave of brewpubs and craft breweries in British Columbia which followed a major deregulation of the brewing industry in that province.

Spinnakers served inventive cuisine and has claims to be the world's oldest gastropub. Bars in the United States soon followed suit, then Britain with THe Eagle in London's Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell, being the first in this country to use the label in 1991.

As with those who have followed in its wake, THe Eagle serves food of a limited menu of restaurant-quality with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients with regularly-changing specials. THere are seats and tables throughout the pub, creating a relaxed environment for both eating and drinking.

In the 20 years since this innovation landed on our shores, gastropubs have sprung up everywhere and in West

Sussex we're fortunate to have many delicious dining and drinking choices within easy reach.

A number are housed in traditional inns, deep in the countryside, offering rural views, quiet gardens and old world ambience but with the sophistication of a menu worthy of a chic city restaurant and a complementary wine list to suit all tastes.

1/3 cup mayonnaise 1 large egg, beaten 2 tbsp. dijon mustard 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp. hot sauce salt and pepper 1 lb. Selsey lump crabmeat 3/4 cup bread crumbs 2 tbsp. parsley oil, for frying lemon wedges tartare sauce

1. In a small bowl, whisk together mayo, egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire, and hot sauce, and season with salt and pepper.

           

2. In a medium bowl, stir together crab meat, bread crumbs, and parsley. Fold in mayo mixture, then form into eight patties.

3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, coat pan with oil and heat until shimmering. Add crab cakes and cook, in batches, until golden and crispy, three to five minutes per side.

4. Serve with lemon and tartare sauce.

From the hustle and bustle of the outside road, the minute the door closes behind you, it's a completely different world.

My friend Nicola and I visited on a Saturday evening, where the temperatures had rocketed well above average, but luckily the staff had turned on the air conditioning which provided an instantly cooling relief from the sticky humidity outside.

Nicola and I chose a table between the conservatory area and the main bar to try the special steak menu. THe wooden criss-cross of beams are delicately decorated with fairy lights twinkling in the dusk.

THe 'Woodies Steak Out’ goes live on THursday, July 11, and every THursday thereafter. THis offer is available from 12pm to 3pm and 5pm until 9.30pm, both lunch and dinner services.

Steaks to choose from include 8oz ribeye, 8oz sirloin, T-Bone, fillet and vegan. Diners can order two steaks (ribeye or sirloin) and receive a bottle of house red or white wine, all for just £29.95.

THe wine is a Spanish red, Ayrum Tempranillo Ganache or a Spanish white, Ayrum Verdejo.

sauce, which I poured over my steak and the cheese sauce, which I delightfully dunked my triple cooked chips, seasoned with rosemary and sea salt, in, although Nicola opted for her steak just as it was and commented on the tasty chargrill flavour.

THe flat mushrooms, watercress and vine tomatoes were an additional bonus, all cooked well too and the fine beans and salad with balsamic were great side dishes.

Despite the generous portion sizes, we were both tempted by the desserts and chose the warm double chocolate nut brownie, served with a caramelised banana and Caramac ice cream.

I think this was possibly the best dessert I have had in a long time. THe banana was still firm but the caramelised

sleek, sophisticated atmosphere with an extensive menu offering the best food from local produce"

fillet and chicken liver pate, and went straight for the main meals.

After a lot of discussion with helpful staff about how they aim to source as many ingredients locally as possible, I chose an 8oz sirloin steak and my friend opted for the 8oz ribeye steak.

THe steaks were both cooked to perfection, exactly what we had asked for. We had decided to try the peppercorn

flavour with the ice cream and chocolate brownie was the best combination of flavours.

THe brownie was perfectly gooey and melted in the mouth without being too sickly or sticky.

THe trendy bar with extensive cocktails, wines and other alcoholic treats is the perfect setting for any occasion and the food is even better!

CommunityNews&Views THE SPACE through Colour exhibition of the work of Ivon Hitchens has got underway at Pallant House Gallery, sponsored by the Chichester office of Irwin Mitchell.

Sponsoring the exhibition (June 29 - October 13) is just part of Irwin Mitchell’s work with the gallery this year, which will include a fundraising event in aid of the law firm’s charity of the year, Dementia Support, in the autumn. THe gallery will also be the venue later this year for Irwin Mitchell partner Anthony Nixon to deliver a talk on philanthropic giving.

Paula James, regional managing partner at the Chichester office of Irwin Mitchell, said: "We are proud to sponsor a once in a generation opportunity to see over 70 works of one of the country’s best loved modern artists.

"Pallant House contains one of the finest collections of 20th century British art in the world and we are lucky to have it on our doorstep. Working with the gallery is another way we maintain our links with the local community and we hope people come along and see what the gallery has to offer."

With works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland, plus a range of European artists like Paul Cezanne on display, Pallant House is well worth a visit at any time, while the forthcoming Hitchens exhibition offers an additional incentive.

Hitchens (1893-1979) is best known for his post war work, with landscapes featuring bright colours, painted in the open air near his Sussex home. A progressive artist of the Seven and Five Society (which included both Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth), the exhibition offers a chance to view six decades of Hitchens’ in the largest exhibition of his work since 1989.

In addition to the planned events at the gallery, Irwin Mitchell will also be arranging for staff from the Chichester office to have gallery tours of their own during the run of the Space through Colour exhibition.

MP Gillian Keegan visited Chichester Nursery School last month and was invited to join children for lunch, where they are taught to eat at the table and serve themselves food.

THe nursery works hard to develop these sorts of essential life skills. For some of the children at the nursery, this may be their only experience of eating in a group at the table.

Mrs Keegan has been working in Parliament to secure sustainable funding for maintained nurseries such as Chichester Nursery, which is the only one in the constituency.

Mrs Keegan's work along with other MPs in the All Party Parliamentary Group for Nursery Schools, has already helped the sector secure funding from the Government up to the end of 2020.

Although future spending is still unknown, the Minister of State has committed to a long-term sustainable funding solution that will be announced in the next spending review.

THe head teacher at Chichester Nursery, Ruth Campbell, said: "THe staff and children at Chichester Nursery were delighted to welcome Gillian Keegan last week to join us for lunch and then join the children in our fantastic environment. As well as getting really stuck in with groups of children, Gillian really took the time to understand some of the issues that are affecting us, our children and families at the moment, particularly relating to social mobility and support for the most vulnerable.

“We were so pleased that Gillian recognised the vital work we do in not only providing the very best start for our children but in supporting our vulnerable children and families in every way possible."

After her visit, the MP said: "Visiting Chichester Nursery is one of the favourite parts of my job as an MP. THe children are lovely, and it is clear they enjoy being at the nursery where they enjoy lots of play and activities from cooking to woodwork."

A CARE home in Chichester held a special open day last week.

THe Marriott House and Lodge Care Home run by Barchester Healthcare is located in Tollhouse Close near the city's college.

Residents enjoyed cabaret style singing with homemade scones, cream and jam.

Care home manager, Maxine Spincer took over as general manager in March and is gradually making changes.

MEMBERS of Chichester Lions Club met recently for the handing over of the chain of office from Lions president Joan Tidy to Lion Peter Wilson.

Present at the meal were members from clubs across the region and the district governor Pete Dilloway presented a special presentation of a Melvin Jones Fellowship to Lion Richard Cowell, pictured above.

Melvin Jones was instrumental in establishing Lions clubs in America in 1917.

RUPERT GREEN, chairman of Covers Timber & Builders Merchants, will be heading to Parliament on July 16, after the company was nominated as Chichester’s ‘constituency responsible business champion 2019’.

ASSISTANCE dogs charity, Canine Partners, hosted a graduation ceremony with support from Foresters Friendly Society.

THe charity, pairing specially trained assistance dogs with individuals with physical disabilities, hosted their latest graduation ceremony last month.

Foresters Friendly Society has sponsored one of Canine Partners' assistance dogs throughout his training, aptly named Forester, and the ceremony celebrated the completion of Forester’s training, which acknowledged the bond between him and his partner, Jonathan.

Canine Partners was Foresters Friendly Society’s chosen charity for 2016/17 and was chosen by former national president Glyn Carpenter and his wife Christine, during this period a total of £70,000 was raised.

In support of Canine Partners, former Blue Peter presenter and radio host, Valerie Singleton, attended on the day as a guest of Foresters Friendly Society at the Canine Partners training centre in Heyshott.

Jane Grant, corporate engagement at Canine Partners commented: "Our partnership day was a joyous occasion. THe value our assistance dogs have in helping with the everyday tasks in life, for those with physical disabilities, is immeasurable. We are very proud of Forester’s development and how he has honed his ability to help Jonathan. THe amount Foresters Friendly Society has raised has enabled us to fund Forester’s training as well as supporting the partnership with regular visits over his entire working life as an assistance dog.

"Foresters Friendly Society is funding the training of four other canine partner assistance dogs, which means we can look forward to establishing more long-lasting partnerships in the future. Canine Partners has over 430 active partnerships working across the UK today, creating 780 over the last 29 years."

Glyn Carpenter, former national president of Foresters Friendly Society, added: "In supporting Canine Partners, and specifically Forester the dog, we knew we would be able to track his performance and witness his progress towards completing all the training required to help others. Knowing we played a role in helping Forester on his journey to be of vital assistance to someone in need is invaluable. As a dog-lover and owner ourselves, we felt particularly passionate to support this wholly worthwhile cause and are delighted by the amount Foresters Friendly Society has been able to raise."

The life and history of the village of Duncton

f Men collecting bracken at Burton Park, 1922 A FEW miles south of Petworth and west of Fittleworth, the village of Duncton was probably the site of a settlement dating to prehistoric times.

Ordnance Survey maps record Tumuli or barrows (where burials were carried out) on Duncton Common. A ring ditch was recently excavated by archaeologists who found flintwork, including arrowheads that may have

been part of burial goods dating to the early Bronze Age. In the Domesday Book, there are 337 places in the county of Sussex listed which includes Duncton. THe Manor of Duncton was within the Rotherbridge Hundred and was assessed as having 31 households as well as 25 acres of meadow, four mills (combined value of £1 10s), two fisheries (rendering 360 eels) and a

church.

Following the discovery of Roman Flue tiles and other archaeological material, partial excavations took place just to the south of Duncton in 1812 and 1816. THese excavations uncovered evidence of a Roman Villa complete with a bathhouse and hypocaust system. Despite the exciting find, no extensive archaeological work has been done since on the site.

Duncton Watermill is a Grade II listed building which was built in the 18th century and the house which stands next to it was built slightly later in the 19th century.

Burton Park is a Grade I listed, 19th century country house surrounded by six hectares of pleasure gardens and parkland. THe current house on the site was built in 1828 by the owner at the time, Richard Biddulph, following the partial destruction of the previous building by way of a fire.

During the Second World War, the estate was owned by the army and in 1945 much of the land was sold to St Michael’s School, a girl’s boarding school. THe site was sold in 1993 and the house has since been converted into flats.

One of Duncton’s three churches lies within the Burton Park estate. St Richards, reputed to be the smallest church in Sussex, is believed to have been built in 1075. It houses a wall painting of St Wilgefortis who legend says was a teenage noblewoman who had been promised in marriage by her father.

In a bid to avoid the marriage, she prayed that she would be made repulsive. In answer

to her prayers she sprouted a beard which ended the engagement. In anger, Wilgefortis's father had her crucified.

Holy Trinity Anglican Church was designed

by John Castle of Oxford in 1864 and was built in 1866 on land donated by the parish’s main landowner. THe churchyard contains the grave of Florence de Fonblanque, a leading suffragist, who died at her home in Duncton in 1949. Her grave describes her as the "Originator and leader of the women's suffrage march from Edinburgh to London 1912".

THe Catholic church of Anthony and St George was designed by the architect Gilbert Blount and was opened in 1869 at a cost of £5,000. THe church and cemetery were paid for by Anthony Wright Biddulph. THe Biddulphs were a Catholic family who lived at Burton Park.

THe village has an old pub ‘THe Cricketers’ (formerly known as the ‘Swan’) which has been an inn since 1640 and by 1840, sale particulars indicate that it had its own brewery attached.

In 1867 the ‘Swan’ was bought by John Wisden who rented the property to James ‘Jemmy’ Dean, an ex-cricketer born in Duncton who played for Sussex from 1835 to 1860 as a fast-medium bowler.

During Wisden’s tenure, the name of the pub was changed to ‘THe Cricketers’ Arms’.

In his will dated 1871, Wisden directed that Dean was ‘to remain as tenant for as long as he should think fit’, which he did, dying at the Cricketers on Christmas Day, 1881.

Strad ready for three in a row STAR stayer Stradivarius is looking to become just the second triple winner of the Group One Qatar Goodwood Cup as his entry into Glorious has been confirmed.

THe John Gosden horse won the 2017 and 2018 edition of the historic two -mile contest and is now looking to repeat the trick to match the great Double Trigger (1995, 1997, 1998).

Stradivarius cemented his standing as Europe's top stayer with another thrilling display in the Group One Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, defeating main rival Dee Ex Bee (Mark Johnston) and Irish challenger Master Of Reality (Joseph O'Brien IRE) in commanding fashion.

THat was five-year-old's second victory in the two-and-a-half-mile highlight, and his seventh win on the bounce.

Three Bridges next for MCC MIDDLETON CC will be looking to keep up their strong start to the season when they welcome struggling THree Bridges to Sea Lane tomorrow (11.30am).

Sean Heather's side are on a run of three games unbeaten after a three wicket win over bottom side Mayfield last weekend.

THe 30 point haul on home turf kept Middleton in fourth spot in the Sussex Premier Division, in touching distance of the top three.

Heather will want to see another all-round display from his side as they dominated Mayfield from the off.

After losing the toss, Middleton soon restricted the visitors to 19-4 as the visitors could not cope with the pace of Russell Talman.

THe opening bowler finished with figures of 6-53 from 13 overs as he took charge with the ball.

Kaia takes five as Bognor remain in promotion hunt BOGNOR Regis CC will be looking to keep up their promotion push as they head to red-hot Haywards Heath tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side sit second in Sussex Division Two, looking to keep up their five-match unbeaten run.

But they look set to be pushed all the way in Mid Sussex tomorrow as they face the league's other form side.

It could have been oh so different for Bognor as they escaped with a battling draw against first-placed St James's Montefiore at Hawthorn Avenue last weekend.

Zimbabwean spinner Roy Kaia was the star with the ball taking 5-57 as the home side restricted the visitors to 184 all out in 52 overs.

In reply Bognor started strongly as Maskell (48) and Mikey Harris (57) put on 85 for the opening wicket.

THen the floodgates opened as no other batter made double figures for the home side.

Harris dug in, scoring a half century from 137 balls. A flurry of late wickets gave St James's a sniff of victory but Jim Fallick and Scott Bingham saw out the remaining overs to seal a share of the spoils for Bognor.

Fellow Division Two side Chichester Priory Park are at the other end of the table and in need of a win at Burgess Hill tomorrow (12.30pm).

Chi produced one of their best batting performances of the season at Haywards Heath last time out.

After winning the toss, Joe De La Fuente (81) and Abhi Raut (64) put on 196 for the third wicket as Priory reached 231-7 off 53 overs.

But in reply their bowlers were unable to make inroads and the home side reached the score with nine balls to spare.

De La Fuente was the pick of the Chi bowlers with figures of 3-35 off ten overs.

In Division THree West fourth-place Pagham will be looking to bounce back at home to Littlehampton, Clapham & Patching tomorrow (12.30pm) after an agonising 11 run loss to leaders Worthing last time out.

Chasing 213 to win after Justin Scott took 4-38, Stuart Hanks' side looked in control as 125-4 .

But contributions from Nick Smith (43), Ryan Barratt (43) and number 11 Sean Rutter (27) were not enough to guide them home.

Rugby CHICHESTER RFC returned from their summer break last week as preparations for the new season gets underway at Oaklands Park.

THe Blues had an inconsistent season last year, recovering from a poor start to eventually register a midtable finish in the London One South division.

Paul Colley, the club's director of rugby, will be keen to see Blues push on and secure a top half finish in 2019/20 - but they will face a tough start to the season.

THe new campaign will see Chi start with a Sussex derby as league newboys Horsham make the short trip to Oaklands Park on September 7.

THen, a week later, Blues will have another derby, this time against local rivals Havant.

THe return fixture against their Hampshire neighbours comes on December 21, just before the festive break.

THe other league newcomers are all London-based sides, with KCS Old Boys, HAC Rugby and Belsize Park joining the competitive division.

THe club are currently looking for players to join their three senior sides as preseason training gets underway.

Trampolining DRAGONFLYERS' Daniel Boon became the latest member of the Bognor-based club to wear the regional kit when he represented the Southern region for the first time at regional team finals in Birmingham last month.

THe Barclaycard Arena hosted qualifying representatives from 12 regions throughout the UK in the sport of trampoline, tumbling and DMT. Boon jumped exceptionally over both routines in the men's NDP 2 age 13 plus men trampoline event.

Not only did he gain crucial points for the South with his seventh place in what was a painfully close competition, he also gained qualification into NDP individual national finals to be held in Coventry later this month.

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers are very proud of the progress Daniel has made and aim to prepare him for national league next year."

Dragonflyers are based at the Regis School in Bognor with training sessions for all abilities held throughout the week.

Sids search for a new boss begins SIDLESHAM FC are on the hunt for a new manager - despite the start of the season being less than a month away.

THe SCFL Division One side made a successful return to senior football last term, sealing a mid-table finish as Steve Bailey put together a talented team of young players.

But, the off-season has seen a number of changes at the Memorial Ground with Bailey now stepping up to take over the reins as chairman.

THat has left a hole in the dugout - a gap that Sids are looking to fill as they look to continue to progress on the pitch.

THe new manager will not have long to put their stamp on the new side - as pre-season fixtures get underway tomorrow with a home match against local rivals and SCFL Division Two side Bosham (3pm).

THat is followed by a visits from East Preston (July 9), Epsom & Ewell (July 13), Fareham Town (July 16), Nyetimber Pirates (July 20) and Littlehampton Town (July 27).

With Bailey still involved, a number of last season's squad are expected to stay involved with the Sids.

Simon Whall, who joined the club last

summer, has been confirmed as first team head coach for up coming season. Simon has a wealth of playing experience at Wembley, Hayes and Chertsey.

Down the road at Selsey, former Sids boss Daren Pearce is making quiet preparations for the year ahead.

THe focus for the Blues is very much on youth with Pearce tasked with bringing on a number of younger players through the ranks at the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium.

Pearce has already signalled that a number of the successful under 18s side, who won the champion of champions trophy across Sussex last season, will be involved with the first team squad when it gets underway.

SCFL Division Two side Bosham have also began their preparations for the new season with boss Tony Hancock overseeing training.

THe Robins will be joined by 14 other sides in the league next season. Roffey - who finished third last season - have been promoted while Westfield have transferred.

THey will be replaced by St Francis Rangers, who folded as a Division One side last season, and TD Shipley, who were runners-up in last season's West Sussex Premier Division.

Dabba returns - with Chi City DABBA will be back in the dugout next season - although it will be on the side of Chichester City rather than Bognor Regis Town.

Darn Killpartrick, the former Rocks coach, took 12 months away from the non-league game last year after more than a decade at Nyewood Lane.

After a year spending his Saturdays recharging his batteries, the England Colleges coach has agreed to link up with Bostik South East newcomers Chi as they look to establish themselves as step four.

He will link up with manager Miles Rutherford, assistant Graham Gee and coach Daniel Potter, who he works with closely at Chichester College.

Dabba will not have long before he takes on his former club as the SCFL Premier champions meet Sussex Senior Cup winners Bognor in the Sussex Community Shield at Lancing's Culver Road on July 30.

Chi's players returned to training last week and look to be in good shape as they head into uncharted territory.

THeir pre-season preparations start tomorrow when they head to play an Isle of Wight representative XI. Next weekend they head to Arundel before matches at Christchurch (July 16), Hamble (July 20) and AFC Portchester (July 23).

Bostik Premier side Worthing visit Oaklands Park on July 27 before preparations are completed on August 3 at Rutherford's former side Moneyfields.

As well as changes on the pitch, Chi have also worked hard to continue to build off the pitch too.

Andy Bell has stepped up to be club chairman with Ashley Clack taking a step back to be vice chairman as the club look to continue to build the club at men's, women's and junior level.

Meanwhile, the club will be starting to visit local businesses to talk commercial sponsorship in the coming days.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea believes he has the right man for the job as the club enters a season of rebuilding.

THe Lions had a disappointing campaign last term, finishing in the bottom half of the SCFL Premier and losing joint manager Richie Hellen along the way.

THings got worse at Nyetimber Lane when the other man in the dugout, Tom Simmons, departed for personal reasons one week before the start of pre-season.

Shea responded quickly and, after receiving some high-quality applications, opted for former East Preston manager Bob Paine.

Shea said: “We’re all really happy with the appointment. “Obviously it was a difficult time to find a new manager that late in as it means we are six weeks behind everyone else. “It’s fair to say the week before the start of pre-season is not ideal but I’m very happy it’s all sorted. “We had a good night interviewing and Bob and his team were clear cut appointments so I’m feeling pretty hunky dory about things.�

During that time he steered them to promotion from SCFL Division One at the first time of asking before two mid-table finishes at step five.

Now he joins a club which have in recent years been pushing for the top five and cup finals.

Paine is joined at the club by Craig Stuart and Tom Henton, both of whom were part of his coaching staff at Lashmar.

THe trio have already got straight on to business, overseeing a number of pre-season training sessions with their new squad.

Shea expects his new manager, who also was a successful coach with Worthing’s youth set up, to spend time rebuilding the core of the squad.

He said: “We are in transition stage, there’s no denying that. “Bob’s first priority is to bring some stability back to the club. THere will be a lot of change player-wise so stability is a good word. “He had already made it clear that youngsters will be key to that. He will be running the under 23s from the 18s and is quite adamant that turning to youth will be our approach moving forward."

Rocks ready for pre-season visit by Havant

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce said he's looking forward to seeing his new-look squad get their first taste of action after the summer break.

THe Rocks squad returned to pre-season last week with the players being put through their paces by coach Robbie Blake and fitness coach Neil Cockcroft.

THe players will not have long to turn their sprints on the South Downs into match action with National South side Havant & Waterlooville coming to Nyewood Lane on Tuesday (7.45pm).

For Pearce it is a chance to pitch his new squad into action against strong opponents who are looking to return to National League level after relegation last term.

It kick starts a busy pre-season which also includes a visit from League One Portsmouth (July 16, 7.45pm) before trips to Horndean (July 24, 7.45pm) and Gosport Borough (August 2, 7.45pm).

Pearce said: "Havant is the first one we have and for both clubs it will be about seeing where we are with players.

"Obviously they are one step above us and, despite both being promoted into the National South at the same time, we both went in opposite directions.

"THey have had a lot of change

round the club with a new manager and investment across the board. So, the match will give us a chance to see where we are and what more we can do.

"THe result does not matter but it is important for us to see how people manage in various phases of the game and will give us an idea what more we need to do to get ready for the first competitive match in a months time."

Unlike in previous years when the Rocks have not finalised a playing squad of 15 until days before the start of the campaign, there's a healthy number of players signed on ahead of a busy Bostik Premier season.

Former Rock James Crane was the first to sign, returning from Worthing, while ex-Pompey duo Dan Smith and Freddie Read have joined on permanent deals after a successful loan spells last season.

Among those to recommit are last term's top scorer Jimmy Muitt, skipper Harvey Whyte, Doug Tuck Keaton Wood and Chad Field.

THe addition of playmaker Stuart Green from AFC Totton also gives creativity in the heart of the park.

Pearce is also confident of bringing in some youngsters from Pompey, with Brad Lethbridge a possible returnee.

Rocks new sponsor just can't wait for new season to start NEXT season their company will be a constant presence everywhere the Rocks go.

And new club sponsor Dominic Reynolds said he cannot wait to see the side that manager Jack Pearce is building at Nyewood Lane take to the pitch next month.

Reynolds, who is the managing director of Reynolds Furniture, has been chairman of the club for the past 12 years.

And, after his businesses name won the auction to be the Rocks main sponsor for the upcoming Bostik Premier season, he said there was every reason to be brimming with confidence going in to the new campaign.

Reynolds' confidence comes as Pearce made a number of important signings so far over the summer including recruiting striker Dan Smith and midfielder Freddie Read from Pompey while fans' favourite Stu Green is returning to Nyewood Lane from AFC Totton.

He said: "It was great to see the Rocks win the Sussex Senior Cup last season and we hope to build on that success.

"Jack and Robbie seem to have done a lot of early business in terms of bringing players to the club as well as keeping key players, the likes of Jimmy Muitt, Doug Tuck and Harvey Whyte, so there are lots of reasons to go into the campaign with a degree of optimism, perhaps - dare I say it - even confidence."

THe chance for Reynolds Furniture to bid for the sponsorship arose when businessmen Victor Coutin, the MD at GardX, donated the prize back to the Nye Camp outfit after he won it in the sponsors' draw.

Reynolds said: "As a company we are

absolutely delighted to be the main sponsors for the forthcoming season.

"We very much look forward to a successful relationship both on and off the pitch. On a personal level, and as a long-standing fan, I am really excited by the prospect of the new season with our new signings."

Reynolds Furniture and the Nyewood Lane outfit are no strangers with the 152-year-old business a long-time backer of the club.

THe firm first had their names emblazoned on the team's shirts a quarter of a century ago - something that Reynolds remembers fondly.

He said: "We have a photo of me, my dad and my brothers with the team when we were shirt sponsors for the first time 25 years ago. Now we can look forward to a new team picture with our branding on the shirts and we're really chuffed.�

Q&A with Rocks manager Jack Pearce

NEXT week the Rocks will return to action.

No one is more excited than Jack Pearce, who is about to start his 50th season involved with the club.

Ahead of pre-season fixtures getting underway next week, Jack sat down with the Post for an extended Q&A ahead of the new season. Here's part one.

Jack, how's the summer been for you?

Well as you can imagine there's lots going on always.

I said at the start of summer that building the squad was the most important task.

So far, everything has been going quite well as we have made some good signings.

We also have quite a number of very interesting younger players who are coming through and doing quite well in training THere are between half a dozen to ten players who will not be known to many who have really come along which is extremely encouraging for the club.

How we get them involved is something we will need to think about.

But you cannot do everything with young unproven players and we still need to improve in certain areas.

It's like putting a jigsaw together and, as anyone who has done one recently knows, trying to find the last few pieces is the most difficult part of completing the puzzle.

Does that mean your emphasis will be on younger players this season?

I've never been big on age; the priority is trying to find good players that want to play for you and we have managed to do that so far.

If you look at the Sussex Senior Cup then Emmett [Dunn] and Macca [Josh McCormick] did ever so well

and neither had played a full game for us before then.

You do have to have some experience with them. But if you can find a good player with experience then that is someone worth holding on to.

How is pre-season training shaping up so far?

We have had two sessions and both have gone well.

THey've been well attended and Robbie and Neil have been pushing them on the fitness.

It's no matter how good you are, if you are not getting to the ball first then football is a difficult game.

You either need to be physically quicker or sharper and that’s where training comes in.

THere's nothing worse than being in a match and hoping an opponent does not run you again. But then there is no better feeling than with ten minutes to play you are still fresh and able to do what you need to do for the team.

You've recently held trials to try and uncover some new players - how did that go?

THe lads did ever so well in extremely hot conditions and we sincerely thank each and every one of them for attending and giving their all.

A trials match is never ideal to demonstrate a player's capabilities because of a number of factors, including having to adapt to positions for the purposes of balance, perhaps a certain lack of cohesion from not knowing your team-mates and maybe even some nerves creeping in.

But overall there was lots to like and we saw a few players who we will speak to about taking things forward and take it from there.

Overall, it has proved to be a productive exercise and one which we would look at repeating next summer.
