High rates in district Plentycrime of FREE Parking

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk

COUNCILLORS have admitted more must be done to tackle increasing crime rates in Chichester. At a full council meeting of Chichester District Council on Tuesday, cabinet member for community services and culture, Cllr Roy Briscoe, said the council

must keep pushing the police to do more to prevent crime in rural areas. It came after councillors discussed the annual report of the council's overview and scrutiny committee, when the increase in crime rates was mentioned. Cllr Dr Kate O'Kelly said she was worried after reading the report. She said: "I'm concerned about the reported crime. "I think our residents would be very

concerned when they see that the year before last, the percentage increase was 9.8 per cent and the last year was 10.9 per cent. "I think that's an area of significant concern. I know that the overview and scrutiny committee has looked at it but one of my suggestions is that the weak areas could go to overview and scrutiny committee to be looked at again. "Just because we have looked at the

crime last year, we could possibly look at it again because it is something that is worsening." Cllr Briscoe said tackling crime was close to his heart. "As such, I want to make sure we are the low crime area that we should be. "I am concerned about the crime figures very much and I will be speaking to our crime commissioner about it."
