CHICHESTER city centre has seen a huge rise in the number of cafes and coffee shops and it's on the increase.

A report carried out by the Chichester Post found approximately 61 places to buy a coffee in North Street, East Street, South Street, West Street and roads immediately leading off them.

Some chain coffee shops also have

two branches and there is a mix of both independents and groups.

THe list includes nine cafes or coffee shops in South Street and its adjoining roads, eight pubs or bars and five restaurants.

In East Street and its adjoining roads there were 12 cafes or coffee shops, two restaurants and two pubs.

Josh Broome, from Pagham, said he felt there were too many coffee shops in the city centre. He said: "Isn't there

a set percentage of how many you are allowed?

"THere's a lot of places closing and I heard Next is going too, Since growing up, I lived in Chichester and have seen it change.

"With shops like David Messam, the hardware store, there were little friendly shops where you can walk in and have a conversation.

"THe only reason I come into Chichester now is the bank or to get something to

eat. I don't really do any shopping here.

"I very rarely come shopping here now.

THe Riders Guild bike shop came second best bike shop but lack of footfall has seen it close and now has a planning application for a coffee shop.

"If I go shopping for clothes, I'd go online, to Gunwharf, Brighton or Southampton.

"THere is so little choice for men's clothing in Chichester."

CLIMATE campaigners met the city's MP last month at St Paul's Church along with members of Extinction Rebellion, Eco Chi, Save our Harbour Villages and other groups.

Protesters lined the entrance carrying banners including Rebel for Life, More Trees Please, Stop Ecocide and THere’s No Planet B. THere followed a two hour meeting with some 50 people in support of Extinction Rebellion’s three demands: 1. Government must tell the truth and declare a climate and ecological emergency 2. Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and loss of biodiversity by 2025 and 3. Government must create and be led by the decisions of a citizens’ assembly on climate and ecological justice.

Mrs Keegan accepted that government has repeatedly got it wrong for decades, not adequately taking account of the growing scientific evidence. Although she had not met Greta THunberg on her recent visit to the UK, she acknowledged and praised the impact of this schoolgirl in drawing

attention to our need to act now.

THe MP also made a point of the Extinction Rebellion movement only coming into existence late last year and the Government has responded through committing to a 2050 target.

Comments from the audience included that there is no plan from the Government to fix the impending catastrophe.

Mrs Keegan told the audience that the response needs to be global but also discussed numerous problems at Chichester level, especially the problems around the large increase in housebuilding, and the need to make new housing energy efficient.

THe MP also made a note of many individual points and promised to investigate them further and raise them in parliament.

She also agreed to consider meeting again to explore and evaluate local actions and plans, as well as post reports of progress on her website so people know where to look for updates.

Some positive ideas were also raised such as using an empty shop in the city for a resource and information centre for the public.

A COUNTY councillor has confirmed he has quit the Conservatives in favour of the Brexit Party.

Cllr Viral Parikh, who represents the Bourne ward, in Chichester said he decided to leave the Conservative party for the most significant issue of this generation which is Brexit.

He told the Chichester Post: "I am a Brexiteer who believes that UK will prosper and do better outside the EU. I believe that the money which we give to the EU should be rather used in our country for education, local government, NHS, social and health care etc.

"I also believe that we should look at foreign aid and projects like HS2 etc as we could use that money where it is required the most.

"I am leaving the Conservative Party because of national politics and our MPs refusing to accept democratic mandate from people.

"Politics needs to be changed and the will of the people should be and must be respected. I would have never left the Conservative Party if Brexit would have been sorted because my heart and values are and will always be Conservative.

"I am extremely proud and happy the way our council is run under Conservatives and I cannot fault the hard work, dedication and vision of West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith.

"She has always supported, helped, respected and valued my input and aspirations for the better of this

county."

Cllr Goldsmith added: "Viral Parikh formally advised me of his resignation from the Conservative Party on Saturday. A keen supporter of Brexit he now feels his views on this matter of national politics are more closely aligned to the Brexit Party and resigned from the Conservative Party on Saturday afternoon. His decision therefore has no connection with the county council and its work for our residents.

"For the two years that he served as a Conservative county councillor he has worked both on the public health and community agendas, his contribution has been positive and I thank him for the work he has done."

Organisers of Prosecco in Park cancel event - See page four

BICYCLES are three times less likely to be stolen from Chichester train station that Bognor Regis's.

A BBC study highlighted the number of bikes stolen from Chichester train station since 2016 and the results show that for every thousand visitors at Bognor Regis station in 2018, three bikes were taken compared to one in Chichester.

Trevor Tupper, the secretary and treasurer for the West Sussex Rail Users Association, said: "I know there have been lots of bikes stolen from Bognor Station, especially when compared to Chichester.

"Chichester station has a great bike set up, with a two-tiered lock area, close to the building and monitored by CCTV. "Bognor's bike area is outside the actual station and isn't as well monitored.

"THe association has suggested moving the bike shelter to platform four where it can be over-looked more closely."

Despite having double the number of people passing through the station annually, Chichester Station had 138 bikes stolen since 2016, just 29 more than Bognor Regis.

at the charity Cycling UK, said: “Bicycle theft might seem a relatively minor offence, and unfortunately is sometimes treated as such by some police forces, but it is definitely not.

"It’s a low risk, high reward crime, with stolen bikes easily changing hands for hundreds or even thousands of pounds on the internet.

“THe majority of these bicycles stolen from train stations are not just play things, but are undoubtedly being used as a vital link in someone’s journey to work or school."

Like the West Sussex Rail Users Association, Cycling UK also put emphasis on improving measures that are already in place.

“With the Government investing £6.8m in new cycle–rail parking, it’s crucial that these new spaces are built to high standards, not just in terms of accessibility but also security.

"THis would involve CCTV and ensure that they are close to the station itself.

“Bike theft is notoriously underreported, which is one of the reasons it is not given the attention it deserves.

"To help the police prioritise this crime, it’s important that victims do report it to the police," its spokesman said.

` Selsey attack A WOMAN was attacked and knocked from her bicycle by a man in Selsey on Sunday afternoon (August 4).

THe 56-year-old woman was riding south down Paddock Lane around 4pm when the man crossed into the road and walked towards her, causing her to stop.

He shouted at her and the struck her in the face, cutting her cheek, bruising her eye and breaking her glasses. He then grabbed her, pushed her from her bike and kicked her before heading off north.

She was taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester for treatment to her injuries.

Her attacker, who may have been in the company of another man who left before the attack took place, is described as white, in his early 30s, 5ft 6in-5ft 7in with untidy shoulder-length dark hair.

He was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans. He was shouting and screaming at her throughout.

Anyone who witnessed the attack or who may have seen the men in the area beforehand is asked to report online or call 101 quoting serial 1122 of 04/08.

` Midhurst theft POLICE received a report of a property in Highfield Close, Easebourne, Midhurst being broken into during day time hours on Tuesday, July 23.

Car keys were stolen from the location and an Audi vehicle was taken from the driveway.

Organisers cancel Prosecco in Park

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN ALCOHOLIC event due to take place in Priory Park next month has been cancelled by the organisers due to low ticket sales.

Prosecco in the Park received plans for one year, instead of the proposed five, at an alcohol and entertainment licensing sub-committee last month.

An attendance of 5,000 people was estimated over the three days for the festival which was set to occupy all of the park eastwards from the Guildhall.

A permanent premises licence was sought from Chichester District Council to enable the applicants to run the event annually for a maximum of five days, including set up and dismantling, between May and September inclusive.

However, Arena Sports Live Ltd, the organisers have now cancelled the event.

On their website it said: 'It is with great regret that the successful Prosecco in the Park events have been forced to cancel the final three events this summer in Hereford (August 16-18), Oxford (August 30 - to September 1) and Chichester (September 27 - 29).'

"It’s never a good thing to have to cancel an event, but we have to be honest and realistic with the projected low attendance and our unpredictable British summer hasn’t been as we expected," explained events organiser Matt Bates.

"We have tried our hardest to launch this great new event but with such low

ticket sales leading up to the event, it’s clear to see that people are waiting to see what the weather does on the day of the event and naturally this places us in a very vulnerable position; one that isn’t healthy for staging a successful event."

THe website continued to say: 'We would like to thank all of you for your support and understanding and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we hope that our customers understand.'

THe organisers say that they are issuing full refunds for those who have pre purchased tickets through their ticket provider Universe from Friday August 2, onwards. Email notifications will be sent to all customers via Universe, signifying that the full refund is being processed to the booker.

Just days after agreeing to a gin festival being held in Priory Park, councillors were asked to approve the licensing for Prosecco in the Park.

THe Friends of Priory Park led objections to the premises licence being granted sating there was no confidence the applicant could meet the licensing objectives covering prevention of crime and disorder, public nuisance and protecting children from harm.

THe objection also pointed out potential parking difficulties with shows at the same time at Chichester Festival THeatre.

Gym receives permission to extend its opening hours CROSSFIT Chichester (CFC) gym in Lavant has received planning permission to extend its opening hours.

THe gym, in the former St Wilfrid's outlet store, sought permission to extend their hours from 7.30am - 6pm, Monday to Friday to 6am until 10pm.

Saturday's hours would change from 7.30am to 1pm to 8am to 4pm and include Sundays.

At a planning committee meeting at Chichester District Council on Wednesday, councillors agreed with officers and permitted the application.

Lavant Parish Council originally commented in January: "Lavant Parish Council is of the view that, given the residential properties were in place prior to the applicant taking

the premisses, it is not unreasonable to restrict the opening time of the car park... and therefore would not support an earlier opening time of 7am."

However the parish council decided to withdraw its comments, considering the recently published noise study.

It instead said they now supported the application on the bases of two conditions which were that during activities at the gym, the door, windows and roller shutter are kept closed to avoid noise break out and the planning consent is initially granted on a temporary basis for a minimum period of six months which can be made permanent if no complaints by residents are received."

History in making as silver Spitfire leaves Goodwood

THE SILVER Spitfire took to the skies from Goodwood Aerodrome on Monday afternoon on a mission around the world.

Goodwood played host to IWC Schaffhausen and the Boultbee Flight Academy, in collaboration with Aviation Adventures Ltd, as the venue chosen to officially start the “Silver Spitfire - THe Longest Flight” expedition.

More than 400 guests gathered at Goodwood Aerodrome to send off the carefully restored and polished Spitfire aircraft on its unprecedented flight around the world. IWC supports the mission as its main partner and official timekeeper.

Over the last two years, more than a dozen specialists have worked to restore an original Spitfire Mk.IX aircraft, which was originally built in Castle Bromwich back in 1943.

Following several successful test flights in July, the “Silver Spitfire” finally took off from Goodwood Aerodrome on Monday at around 1.30pm, beginning its muchanticipated circumnavigation of the globe.

Piloting the iconic British aircraft, on the first leg of its journey, is Matt Jones, co-founder of the Boultbee Flight Academy.

“I am excited to witness the start of the expedition,” said Christoph GraingerHerr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “Never

in the history of aviation has a Spitfire embarked on such a long and arduous journey. I wish Steve Boultbee Brooks, Matt Jones and the entire ground crew every success.”

“THe last few months have been intense, and full of activity. Now we're thrilled that we can finally begin our great adventure and share the glory of the Silver Spitfire with the rest of the world. It's a massive undertaking, and a huge privilege to be involved in such a project. Now it's time to make history," added Boultbee Brooks, before the departure.

On Sunday evening, ahead of the flight, IWC hosted a private dinner with the two pilots and their crew at Goodwood

House.

On Monday, the funfair atmosphere included live music, an air show and other attractions. Among the guests were Hollywood stars Rosamund Pike and Taron Egerton, former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, TV and radio presenter Dermot O’Leary, British actor Finn Cole and THe Duke of Richmond.

THe departure of the “Silver Spitfire” was preceded by a parachute drop by the RAF Red Devils and when the Silver Spitfire took to the skies, it was accompanied by a ceremonial escort of three two-seater Spitfires.

which, the two British pilots will cover more than 43,000 kilometres and visit 30 countries.

THe route will initially take them to Iceland, and from there to Canada and the USA. A total of approximately 100 flight segments will be needed to complete the mission from start to finish.

During their journey through the different time zones, Boultbee Brooks and Jones will wear the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Spitfire Edition “THe Longest Flight”.

As the official watch of the expedition, this timepiece makes it possible to set different time zones by simply turning the bezel to the location.

Much-loved statue in Priory Park is set for restoration A MUCH-loved statue which has been in Chichester’s Priory Park since 1873 will soon be repaired and restored.

THe Druid statue will be temporarily removed from the park during August so that specialists, who have already restored two identical statues for the National Trust, can carry out the works.

“THe statue is an important part of Priory Park and so it is important that this is restored and repaired so that it can continue to be enjoyed for years to come,” says Councillor Tony Dignum, cabinet member for finance, growth, place, and regeneration.

“THe statue is made of Coade stone and so we have carried out extensive research to make sure that this work is carried out by specialists who are experienced in restoring this type of

stone.

“THis is one of many improvements planned for our Priory Park in Chichester. We look forward to welcoming the statue back to Priory Park once the works have been completed.”

THe statue will be repaired by Cliveden Conservation in Berkshire, one of the country’s leading experts for the conservation of stone.

THis follows an extensive research exercise, carried out by Chichester District Council.

THe statue was originally placed above a water supply in South Street in 1776 and has since had a number of homes across Chichester ever since. It now resides in Priory Park, which is owned and managed by Chichester District Council, and has been installed there since 1873.

AN EAST Wittering campsite is doing its bit for the marine enviornment by providing “Beach Clean Kits”.

THe dangers of marine plastic pollution and the widespread detrimental effects on marine ecosystems has been highlighted by David Attenborough’s recent Blue Planet series on TV. Stubcroft Farm has decided to do their bit to help clean up the coastline by funding the costs of putting together several beach clean kits as part of their local environmental efforts.

THese kits are loaned free of charge to campers who want to help clean up the beaches and reduce the amount of plastic entering the seas along our part of the south coast.

THey will also be available to local community groups and volunteers.

THe kits come in two sizes, smaller family size bags suitable for one or two families and larger tote boxes suitable for bigger groups.

Each kit contains everything needed to safely collect all types of beach waste.

THey include litter pickers, hi vis safety vests, bag holders and bags, gloves, sharps kits, advisory notes and much more.

THe beach cleaning also raises awareness from other beach goers and hopefully will make them think twice about leaving litter on the beaches.

As an optional extra, there are also recording sheets which the campsite return to the Marine Conservation Society which helps it monitor the sources and type of marine waste to help put pressure on companies and politicians to reduce polluting plastics, especially single use plastics, at source.

Campsite owner Simon Green says: "THe majority of our campers as well as the huge influx of summer tourists come to this area to enjoy our great sandy beaches. Whilst many are responsible & take their rubbish back with them, significant amounts of rubbish are left on the beaches especially after busy weekends.

"Large amounts of all kinds of plastic rubbish is also washed up by incoming tides from old fishing nets to plastic bottles and bags, all of which has a detrimental effect on marine wildlife.

We hope our Beach Clean Kits will help remove sat least some of this rubbish and stop it being washed back out to sea."

` Art exhibition EMSWORTH Artists are semi -professional, professional and highly talented amateurs who stage an exhibition once a year.

THey all live within a two mile radius of Emsworth Square and have been invited to exhibit in an exciting exhibition.

Many of the artists were on the Art Trail in April/May this year.

THe exhibition runs from August 24 to 28 and open from 10am until 6pm with free admission.

THe Printing Workshop for young Artists sponsored by Emsworth Community Association and THe Arts Society Portsdown runs alongside the exhibition and was a great success last year encouraging the next generation of artists Last year the group was able to donate £1,500 from the proceeds as all the artists donate 25 per cent of their sales to the community centre.

Demolition of park buildings

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk BUILDINGS at Priory Park are set for demolition after councillors agreed to the planning application at Wednesday's meeting.

Member's of Chichester District Council's planning committee agreed to demolish the existing works depot, adjoining lean-to and part of the existing masonry wall.

Conversion is also on the plans for part of the existing clubhouse outhouses (former air raid shelters) into new equipment stores and grass over an area and provide a footpath.

THe existing works depot buildings span from the western boundary east up to the storage sheds currently used

by the hockey club. THe buildings currently incorporate a flint wall which will be exposed on removal of the depot buildings.

It is proposed to provide an opening in the wall to facilitate a new path which would run from the Rotary garden to the north, southwards through the wall and a new open space area to the rear of the toilets and Fenwicks cafe.

To compensate for the loss of the depot buildings, there are plans to convert the end unit of the former air raid shelters into a new maintenance equipment store.

Chichester Conservation Area Advisory Committee rejected the application saying the flint wall is an important part of Priory Park's history and should be retained and conserved.

Boost for Midhurst dog charity GOODWOOD’S charity of the year has had a boost this month, with a £1,000 donation from Barratt Homes.

THe housebuilder, which is currently working on its Madgwick Park development just down the road from Goodwood, has made Canine Partners the latest recipient of its community fund.

THe Barratt and David Wilson Homes Community Fund donates £1,000 each month to a charity or organisation and the fund is part of the company’s pledge to strengthen its ties with the areas in which it is building new homes.

Jon Green, managing director of Barratt Homes, said: “We’ve been working closely with Goodwood since we started work on our Madgwick Park development nearby. When they told us about the great work Canine Partners was doing we just had to help. It’s our pleasure to donate to this important charity.”

Less retail choice on offer forces shoppers out of the city centre

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MANY shops along the four main streets of Chichester are vacant now and some have planning applications in to change the use from retail to restaurants.

A huge rise in online shopping habits have seen a decline in the high street across the UK but some business owners in Chichester blame high rates and rents and a lack of footfall.

Philip Jull who owns THe Pass Street Food Cafe in Rutland Way off South Street said he was more concerned about the number of shops closing in general.

He said: "I don't have a big opinion on the number of coffee shops because I am not coffee focused, what I do is more unique here.

"We are more street food takeaway but I think the people of Chichester want to use independent businesses and I think that's why the Coffee Lab round the corner does so well really.

"I took this building on because it's not rateable due to the square footage. If I was going to look up in the high street I'd be looking at about £20,000 a year.

"My business has grown from an existing one as we have a trailer and the brand has come from that and Deliveroo has been brilliant.

"I think South Street is the hub of catering in Chichester. I think the council, or whoever makes the decisions should be much more conscious about the way the high street is going, it's a place to come and have a coffee.

"THere are no home stores, they are all in the big business parks on the outside, so you are drawing it away.

"THis is not unique to Chichester, I know Brighton is the same.

"North Lanes which was a tourist attraction and full on independent is slowly slipping away. It's all changed there now."

According to documents, non-retail uses in the city centre already exceed the 25 per cent threshold and further non-retail changes of use could harm the viability and vitality of the city centre contrary to Policy 27 of the Local Plan.

A package of support is currently being introduced by Chichester District Council to help support local retailers, as part of its commitment to support the high street.

A new events programme, a bid to the Government’s High Streets Fund, improved planning guidance, marketing training, enabling grants and a shopfront grant programme are all part of the support from the council.

Kieran Parkinson, manager of cocktail bar, THe Rocking Horse in South Street said he was pleased with the number of restaurants in the area as it was good for business.

He said: "We are lacking in the amount of clothing shops available to us here but then the more restaurants they are building is better for me. It will bring a lot more custom to Chi which is good for this business.

"I think it's good how many pubs and bars there are here."

Kieran who lives in the district said he wouldn't come shopping in Chichester though and instead he would go online or Portsmouth.

But for business he said he was in a prime place, "We are in a really good

location here. South Street is the busiest street. THere isn't much competition either because we are completely different from the other businesses nearby, we offer something unique."

Mayor of the city, Cllr Richard Plowman said: "My current count is 82 if you add all the ones in the other retail shops such as M&S and some other shops such as Pret-a-Manger and Greggs which are classified as retail although their sales are mainly coffee.

"My view as mayor is we have to make sure we have a good mix of variety of shops, cafe and restaurants to ensure a vibrant city centre.

"THere are parts of the city where there is a good mixture such as around Eastgate but even that could not sustain the excellent independent coffee shop Attibassa (Forum).

"I love coffee but simply there are too many coffee shops to be sustainable and always the primary victims are the independents. Where would Chichester be without Fenwick’s in the park, St Martin’s Tea Rooms, Little London restaurant, Luckes, the wonderful Exclusive cake company and many other independents.

"THey offer something different and unique but will always struggle against the chain coffee shops.

In the new Chichester neighbourhood plan there is an opportunity to get the balance right and protect our independents."

` Coffee morning Co-op Funeralcare in Chichester is offering a weekly coffee morning every Wednesday between 10am12pm to help members of the community come together to overcome social isolation and support individuals following the loss of a loved one.

Research from the Co-op has found that loneliness is one of the biggest issues facing local communities across the UK, with over nine million people reporting they always or often feel lonely.

Furthermore, 92 per cent of people feel their community plays a major role in supporting individuals who are experiencing loneliness, so that they don’t grieve on their own.

Co-op’s coffee morning will give residents an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and support one another.

It is also hoped these clubs will help Chichester individuals tackle loneliness whilst raising money for a number of local charities including THe Apuldram Centre, Rotary Club Harbour Community Services Team and Southbourne Lions Club.

Smellies help animal charity

A POPULAR beauty and bath product shop in the city held a special fundraising event for an animal charity.

THe Body Shop in East Street opened its doors from 5.30pm on Wednesday afternoon and welcomed plenty of visitors browsing the shelves.

THe idea came from the shop's assistant manager, Lucia Cook who lives in Waterlooville and wanted to help a local charity.

She said:"I used to work in the Brighton store and I wanted to do a volunteer day at the RSPCA branch there but it didn't happen.

"I wanted to do something to profit another company and help a charity.

I love animals and the Body Shop has ethics such as 'Forever Against Animal Testing' and we are 60 per cent vegan and 40 per cent vegetarian.

"THis event benefits us and Mount Noddy. I looked at places locally that are in need of help. My colleague Deb recommended Mount Noddy and I looked at their website and saw they needed donations.

"I work with such a big brand I wanted to run an event and get as much involvement as I could from the local community.

"A lot of the raffle prizes have been donated by local businesses and people.

"I am shocked at the turnout, I'm really pleased with how many people are here.

"We had a little hiccup before when our helper with the food dropped out at the last minute, so we went to M&S

and got as much vegetarian food as we could. Anything to make sure it still went ahead."

THe fun evening included pampering with various treatments, sampling the Body Shop products, a raffle with hundreds of prizes donated from companies including; Sweaty Betty, Montezuma's and THe Coffee Lab and games including guess Pixie the dog's weight.

Pixie was a dog taken in by Mount Noddy and rescued by business and income generations manager, Clare Palmer.

THe event also offered goodie bags and a free gift for every £15 sale.

RSPCA Sussex Chichester and District branch, Mount Noddy, is selffunded and relies on the generosity of those living in the Post area.

Clare said: "Lucia at THe Body shop in Chichester had approached me wanting to run this event for us, to help raise awareness and funds for the animal centre.

"THey organised the tickets, posters and gathered donated raffle prizes from many local businesses such as Bills, Montezuma's, and Hotel Chocolate.

"Over 30 people came along to be pampered for the evening and enjoy the raffle.

"THey help us to reach out to different groups of people in the local area, to offer not only volunteering opportunities but to shout about the work we do and spread the word about animal welfare, rescue and adoption.

"THank you to the amazing efforts of the Body Shop Chichester team and we hope to work with them again in the future."

Meteor shower

KEEN ASTRONOMERS are being encouraged to get out early and persevere to gain a glimpse of this week’s Perseid meteor shower.

THe Earth is now inside the stream of dusty debris from periodic comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, parent of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Consequently, observers are reporting increasing Perseid meteor activity.

Dr John Mason from the South Down's Planetarium in Chichester explains: "THe Perseids are one of the most reliable meteor showers of the year, producing an abundance of fast, bright meteors, many with persistent trains.

"THis year, some observers may be put off by the fact that there is a bright full moon on August 15, just a couple of days after the peak of the shower – predicted for just after dawn UK time on Tuesday, August 13.

"Bright moonlight certainly has an adverse effect on meteor observing, lunar glare swamping out all but the brighter meteors, but the good news is that the near full moon will be low down in Sagittarius.

"Visual observers may minimize the effects of moonlight by positioning themselves so the Moon is behind them and hidden behind a wall or other suitable obstruction. THis is easiest when the moon is fairly low in the southern sky as it will be for the Perseids this year.

"THe other good news is that many Perseid meteors are bright and there is a high percentage of fireballs, easily visible in spite of the bright Moon."

Another way to beat the moonlight is to go out a few days earlier than usual to watch the progress of the shower, today (August 9,) Saturday and Sunday (August 10, and 11) when the Moon is less obtrusive, particularly during the early morning hours.

THe shower will continue to be active until about August 24.

Dr Mason also confirmed that people should not be put off by the weather forecast which suggests there will be plenty of showers and thunderstorms during the next week or so as it is quite often the case that after a good thunderstorm or heavy spell of rain, the atmosphere, once the clouds break, is quite clear giving decent views.

` Energy bills HOUSEHOLDERS in the Post area are being urged to save money on their energy bills and get price protection for two winters with Your Energy Sussex.

THe council-supported energy supplier has launched a new energy tariff which will lock in the price you pay for gas and electricity for 24 months.

It is currently one of the leading two-year deals on the market and cheaper than one-year fixed tariffs currently on offer from five of the ‘Big Six’ energy suppliers.

By signing up to Your Energy Sussex residents will also get 100% renewable electricity, great customer service and a commitment to supporting the local community.

Your Energy Sussex is a not-forprofit energy supplier that uses the surplus it generates to create a Fuel Poverty Fund to help local people who are struggling to pay their energy bills.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for environment, said: “We launched Your Energy Sussex in 2018 to encourage more of our residents to switch and save money on their bills and help them engage with the energy market. Many people have never switched and could be paying up to £300 more than they need to each year if they are on their energy supplier’s most expensive ‘standard variable’ tariff."

County council pays out thousands in compensation for pot hole damage COMPENSATION payments to drivers whose cars were damaged by potholes in 2018 have cost West Sussex County Council more than £30,000 so far, with another £11,000 likely to follow.

THe figures were published in a report detailing the complaints and compliments received by the council that year, which was discussed by members of the standards committee last Friday, July 26.

So far, the council has received 1,186 claims for the year and has closed or settled 740 of them, paying 81 people a total of £30,678.94. Offers totalling £11,777.49 have been made to another 34 claimants.

THe report said that in 2017 there had been 494 claims, 478 of which were closed or settled, with payments of £47,351.24 made to 110 people.

THe pothole complaints were not included in the general list of complaints made to the council, which rose by more than 20 per cent between 2017 and 2018 – from 659 to 812. One-third of them were upheld.

competence of staff, compared to 12 in 2017. But it was pointed out that, when the matters were looked into, the staff were usually perfectly competent and doing their jobs well. It was the council policies they were putting into practice that claimants had a problem with.

On the plus side, the total number of compliments rose from 4,065 in 2017 to 5,211 in 2018 – though members were told that the vast majority were made to people who simply did their job ‘in a way that we as a council would want it to be done’.

THe report added: “THis comment in no way infers that the council simply accepts the level of complaints we have received.

“We want to avoid any customer needing to complain, but also regard every complaint as an opportunity to learn and to implement changes that will avoid future complaints being made, improving our customers’ experience and in turn our customers’ satisfaction levels with the council.”

A blooming marvellous turnout

LAVANT Horticultural Society held their annual fruit, flower and vegetable show on Saturday with a record number of visitors and entrants.

THe society which has been running for over 40 years is affiliated to the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) with members from Lavant and Summersdale.

THe show was held on August 3, with free entrance to visitors and just 10p per entry for each show piece. Members of the society could only enter each category once but as many categories as they wished.

THe society collects the funds from entries, the raffle and from tea and homemade cake sales to put towards guest speakers at their meetings and also THe Aldingbourne Trust which they helped this year.

Classes in the vegetable category included; beetroot, potatoes, onions, runner beans, garlic, shallots, rhubarb and carrots.

Fruit classes were any soft fruit and any other kind of fruit.

Vases were provided for the flowers category and classes included; patio pot plants, fuchsias, orchids in flower,

geranium, roses, dahlias, sweet peas and lilies.

Other categories included flower arrangements with themes including; 'summer splendour' , 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder', 'the many shades of summer' and 'over the rainbow'.

Home produce was a popular category too with classes including; loaf, cheese scones, biscuits, fruit scones, Victoria sandwich, shortbread, fruit crumble, jam and chutney.

Publicity and marketing manager for the society, Linda Hughes won first prize in the watercolour painting category in handicrafts and third place for her pastel drawing of a golden retriever puppy.

Junior classes were also in the show as well as fun classes including longest runner bean, heaviest marrow and heaviest onion.

Chairman, Michael Kingsford, who had the largest number of points overall at the show and coming in first place, said: "We had a record number of entries this year and the standard of the entries was very high.

"THe flower show is very much a community event which brings local people together in an enjoyable way. THe teas and homemade cakes ( made by the committee members ) always prove to be popular too!

"Details of our annual programme, including information about our various monthly speakers and social events are on our website: lavanthortsoc.org.uk for anyone interested in joining us."

THe society is looking for new members, particularly younger people, and extending their reach to the neighbouring areas. District council begins working on city cycling and walking plan CHICHESTER District Council has started work on the development of a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Chichester city centre and its links to adjoining parishes.

THe plan aims to identify local cycling and walking improvements, and will outline a priority cycling and walking network, as well as the necessary infrastructure required for this. THe plan will assist in prioritising investment in local roads and pathways, including those delivered in association with the local plan. It will also help when bidding for grant funding.

Chichester District Council is part of a partnership of local authorities delivering local cycling and walking infrastructure plans across West Sussex.

THanks to funding from West Sussex

business rates and the Department for Transport, the council has commissioned an audit of current pedestrian pathways and cycle routes in Chichester, as well as assessing existing routes in and out of the city.

A key part of this work has been consultation with groups such as local cycling and walking groups, residents’ groups, elected members, local businesses, West Sussex County Council, parish councils and Chichester Business Improvement District (BID).

Once the audit is completed, a selection of walking and cycling improvements will be considered.

THese improvements will then be prioritised in order of which offer the most benefit to the largest number of people. THis will help inform future investment decision making by the agencies responsible for planning, roads and pathways.

“We know that green transport is something our residents, workers and visitors are very passionate about, and as a council, we are too,” says Cllr Penny Plant, cabinet member for environment and Chichester contract services at Chichester District Council.

“THis plan is an important step towards improved cycle and pedestrian access for the city. West Sussex County Council and Highways England are responsible for roads and pathways and this will assist them when making any future investment decisions."

City's architecture student gains an inaugural top prize

AN ARCHITECTURE student from Chichester has received one of the first prizes from the Royal Institute of British Architects to be awarded at Reading School of Architecture.

Daniel Hellyer, a student at Reading School of Architecture has been awarded a prize for excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Daniel, 22, was a winner of the RIBA Berkshire Society of Architects’ Conrad Birdwood Willcocks Award for Technical Excellence.

THis is the first year that the award, which celebrates the talent of architecture students at the university, has been made by the Berkshire Society of Architects - a branch of the RIBA which represents nearly 500 architects across the county.

THe judges were impressed by his

project, which is the visualisation of a forest complex on Greenham Common in Berkshire. Responding to the history of the site, the scheme has a nuclear focus, with laboratories testing the radioactive atmospheric conditions and how the DNA of trees mutates through radiation.

It also includes a seed bank, potentially to repopulate an affected area; and a fire watch tower designed to reflect the shape of a nuclear cooling tower.

Daniel, who is from Chichester was formerly a student at St Philip Howard Catholic High School. He has just finished the three-year degree course in architecture at Reading – one of the first students to graduate from Reading School of Architecture. Daniel has now completed Part 1 of training to be an architect. He is going to work for HNW Architects, the practice based in North Street, Chichester. Qualifying as an architect in the UK takes at least seven years.

Dear Kelly, I read your article about the possibility of Priory Park being nominated for best Park in the country - a great idea but I didn’t agree with your article about the so called food festival!!!

I went the first day very disappointed not what I call a food festival. A bit of live music with stall holders selling food.

Dear Kelly, THe 320 people who used the mobile waste and recycling skips in Marine Drive car park in the Witterings last THursday (August 1st) signed a petition to keep the service, which is under threat due to budget cuts by West Sussex County Council.

Residents using the service and signing the petition came from all the surrounding villages including East and West Wittering, Birdham, Earnley and Itchenor.

THe petition was handed over to Pieter Montyn, who is the county councillor for the Witterings.

Residents want to send a message to West Sussex County Council that this is a vital service and should not be cut. Without this service, there will be many more car journeys up to the tip at Westhampnett, which will just increase the bad traffic congestion on the peninsula in the summer months.

Also some residents can manage to get to the mobile skip service but will struggle to get up to Westhampnett.

And everyone is worried about the increased risk of fly tipping if the

Dear Editor, With reference to Jane Church’s letter in the July 19 edition, narrowing the carriageway of any road, is, in my opinion, most unlikely to make drivers slow down.

Bearing in mind the size of the agricultural vehicles we now have on our local roads and that as many are fitted with 'road' gears which enable them to travel at well over 30 mph meeting one of those on an already narrow road which has been made even narrower is likely to increase the chances of a head on collision with the motorist being a very poor second.

Even if vehicles did slow down it would not reduce emissions as most cars, especially those with an automatic gear box, will be in a lower gear. Being in a lower gear, as anyone with the slightest knowledge of internal combustion

engines will know, means more revolutions per minute and that means an increase in fuel consumption and therefore more pollution, not less.

A similar claim was made in a newsletter sent out by Westbourne Parish Council regarding the 20mph limit in the village which is now largely ignored and not enforced. THis is pseudo science and fake news!

Waiting for crossing gates, especially those in Southbourne and Warblington, to open is very frustrating,.

THere are signs in both places saying: "cut engine, cut pollution" I take notice of the signs, it doesn't stop the frustration but it does stop the pollution and it stops me burning my pension!

Theatre. The Tempest. As part of Arundel Festival 2019, the award-winning theatre group Illyria returns to the Collector Earl’s Garden at Arundel Castle for two alfresco performances of Shakespeare’s THe Tempest on August 16 and 17. Event. Reptile Day. If you and your family have been inspired

by Sir David Attenborough and his television programmes, there's a chance to get up close and personal with a range of reptiles at Aldingbourne Country Centre, off the A27, near Fontwell, on Tuesday August 13. Tom's Talking Reptiles will be at the centre with some of their collection of reptiles, most of which have been rescued, including iguanas, snakes, frogs, lizards, tortoises and tarantulas, from 10am4pm. Not only will you be able to hold the reptiles but Tom and his team will be there for any information. No need to book. Other attractions at the site will also be available - a woodland walk, open farm, mini golf, ride on tractors, sand and water play area, wooden train and castle play area, and delicious locally sourced and home-cooked food in its café which features an indoor slide.

Theatre. This is Theatre. THe historic Guildhall in Priory Park in central Chichester will be the setting for two shows, one each for adults and children tomorrow (Saturday), August 10. At 3pm, Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad will be setting off on their well-loved adventures in an adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's THe Wind in the Willows. Closely adapted from the original and combined with traditional folk music, this will delight children and adults alike. Another theatrical classic, THe Importance of Being Earnest will be performed at 7.30pm. Performed by just three actors, this ‘Trivial Comedy for Serious People’ will be a fast-paced, one-act adaptation which will truly demonstrate, as Algernon/Ernest observes ‘the truth is rarely pure and never simple’.

Event. Bonfire Societies Firework Championships. THe championships is an exciting

event for lovers of fireworks. THree bonfire societies will battle it out to be crowned the 2019 champions on Saturday, August 10. During the judging, there will be a demonstration by organisers Phoenix Fireworks to give a fourth display for the evening. As well as fireworks, there will be a fun fair and family entertainments, food facilities and bars. Or visitors can bring a picnic to enjoy whil watching the shows in the stunning grounds of Wiston Park, near Steyning. We go with family friends and all the kids (well big teenagers) that we have been camping with forever.

It’s the best fun, outside all day long, beautiful beaches and wall to wall

sunshine! A crazy, non-stop volley ball, cooking, clearing, stressing over the holes in the ground that they call toilets, sleep deprived (due to extreme coldness at night and boiling tent at 5am!!) trip that we all love.

On the last day everyone is packing their tents and leaving, but five of us don’t have to rush off and want to make the most of the sunny glorious day. As the group lessons, the remaining people start to get quieter, and calmer.

We walk down to the beach, which is

YOU SHOULD APPARENTLY HAVE no more than a 30 minute nap during the day

less than five minutes down a cliff, and as we lay on our towels we are all sound asleep within minutes. It’s the middle of the afternoon and we’ve all literally passed out!

But is it good to take a nap? THere is a reason NASA, Google and Samsung have specifically designed sleep pods that shut the outside world out and plays soothing music to you. THere is also a reason it wakes you up again after 20 minutes!

THe company behind these trendy sleep pods, are New York-based MetroNaps, who also supply law firms, management consultancies and airlines.

Any business, in fact, that is interested in attracting and retaining good-quality employees.

A NASA Study of astronauts’ sleep patterns found that the main cognitive function improved by napping was

“working memory”. THis is the ability to multitask – focusing attention on one task while holding other tasks in memory. THis is very needed for performing complex work like piloting a spaceship!

In addition to improving cognitive abilities, other studies have shown napping reduces the risk of heart disease, as well as increases alertness, boosts creativity, reduces stress, improves perception, stamina, motor skills, and accuracy, enhances your sex life, helps you make better decisions, keeps you looking younger, aids in weight loss, reduces the risk of heart attack, elevates your mood, and strengthens memory.

However, DO NOT OVER DO IT! Despite napping’s many benefits, you can have too much of a good thing. So in order to ensure you don’t interfere with your night sleep patterns you

should apparently have no more than 30 minutes nap during the day!

Strangely our little siesta on the beach only lasted about 20 minutes, but I think that was probably due to the increasing number of people surrounding us with their buckets and spades!

I have to say though, it is not something I normally indulge in, but I think I may take a little nap at my desk from now on, when the opportunity arises! We all felt super charged after just 20 minutes of afternoon napping!

Volunteers sought for university project University of Chichester Exercise Physiology Laboratories, Bishop Otter Campus 01243 816025 m.banic@chi.ac.uk RESEARCHER Milena Banic explains what's involved in the Blueberry Study and advantages for those volunteers who take part.

THe Blueberry Study will examine whether the intake of blueberries can have beneficial health effects for overweight people during regular healthy exercise. THe study involves a participant attending sessions at the Exercise Physiology Laboratories at the University of Chichester's Bishop Otter campus in Chichester.

THe first session will be for familiarisation, then the two following will involve measurements of body composition and determining the participants’ brisk walking speed. At the third session we will also take 2x10 ml of blood. Over the next 36 sessions, participants will perform a programme of a 30 minute brisk walk, three times a week, preferably in the laboratory.

During the study each participant will take a daily supplement (25g) of blueberry powder, or placebo powder.

After completing 39 visits, participants will visit one more time for a post-intervention session, where we again measure body composition and take 2x10ml blood for analysis.

THe project is led by is Professor Mark Willems who, among other studies, has done research into the health effects of blackcurrants. He has been a researcher at Chichester University since 2003 and is programme coordinator for the MSc in Sport and Exercise physiology.

THe primary researcher is Milena Banic, who manages the project.

Dr Mandy Gault and Dr Sam Blacker are also involved.

Following his previous work, Prof Willems and the team received funding from the United States' Highbush Blueberry Council to conduct this study.

Blueberries are an interesting topic to study for their potential health effects on, among other things, cardiovascular health, insulin response, weight, brain health and other health parameters.

Most of these studies were short-term and it has not yet been investigated over a three-month period.

THe university team is interested in investigating the effect of blueberries on fat usage during regular exercise, something which has not yet been extensively investigated.

More than 50% of the population in Britain is overweight or obese. It is therefore essential to gain knowledge of strategies which might be beneficial for health. Blueberries are thought to have beneficial health effects, however it is important to thoroughly study whether blueberries are beneficial for the overweight general population before making any claims.

THe results will be made available to the public through (multiple) peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. Participants can opt to receive their own data at the end of the study. THey are always free to look at their own data which, when made available, will be anonymous and not be traceable to the participant.

Participation in the study will offer an insight into how the consumption of blueberries will potentially have beneficial effects on participants' health. THey will also receive a free three-month exercise programme, £3 for each completed session, £120 in total, and free body composition analysis before, during and after the three-month walking programme.

CommunityNews&Views CHICHESTER kitchen retailer, Kutchenhaus is defying the ongoing pressures on bricks and mortar retailers operating on the high street, to report 50 per cent growth in year-on-year revenue.

THe store, which serves customers across an approximate 40mile radius catchment area, is managed by franchisee owners Andy Barwell and Paul Turner, who have operated the business success story since September 2017.

THey both say the growth is primarily down to the quality of the instore customer experience, the German designed and manufactured kitchens that Kutchenhaus is famous for and the increased consumer demand for affordable quality. THe business is now forecasting a 12-month revenue growth target of another 50 per cent as it looks to build further on its success.

Andy, co-owner of Kutchenhaus in Crane Street, commented: "THe last 12 months has been the best trading period for us, across both our main Chichester store, and our second store in Romsey.

"Between Paul and I, we have experience of more than 20 combined years in the industry and can offer a bespoke design service to our customers. We were already familiar with the Kutchenhaus product and the reps from selling in our previous roles, which drew us to the brand, and Kutchenhaus have given us the support and resources we needed to make the store a success.

"Due to the revenue growth, we are considering the possibility of expanding and opening more stores, as well as hiring additional staff for our current stores.

"We have just recruited an area support manager to help with installations and ensure the customers receive consistent levels of great service. THe Kutchenhaus store in Chichester boasts 2,100 square foot of retail space and four staff are employed across customer services and kitchen design."

CHICHESTER Canal has announced the winners of its 2019 photographic competition.

THe canal trust was thrilled with the response that it received to its 2019 photographic competition when almost 100 photographs covering virtually all activities experienced on the canal were submitted.

It was not surprising that the majority were either of birds and animals - including water voles - or the beautiful scenery along the towpath caught at almost all states of season or time of day with gorgeous sunsets, misty dawns or winter freezes.

THe photographs will be shown on the large television screen in the canal cafe at the basin.

But the primary purpose of the competition was to identify 12 photos for the canal's 2020 calendar and the judges believe they have indeed selected very suitable photos to depict the different seasons. Including one which just might prove a surprise.

THe far harder task was to identify the winner and runner up.

THe judges eventually chose a beautiful shot of a very proud coot mother and her two chicks taken by Gary Howes, who wins a £50 voucher donated by the London Camera Exchange.

THe runner up prize of a family ticket on the tripboat Kingfisher goes to Natasha Jefferies for a beautiful shot of the overhanging trees in full spring bloom over the towpath.

THe canal trust is extremely grateful to all those who submitted the photographs and hopes that they - and others - will take part in the 2020 competition.

GOODWOOD Health Club has celebrated its 30th birthday with an anniversary party for members, some of which have been part of the club since it was first launched.

One of the oldest health clubs in Sussex, opened in 1989, equipped with an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, steam room, fitness studio, tennis and squash courts within the Goodwood hotel complex and now has more than 2,000 members.

The history of the Selsey fishing industry

THE SELSEY fishing industry has been a key driver in the development of the town that we know and love today.

THe fishing tradition predates the establishment of the town and its story is interwoven into the community’s history. For centuries the main occupations in the village were farming, fishing and smuggling. THe fishing industry remains hugely important to this day and contributes £1.5million annually towards the local economy.

At first glance, Selsey appears to be a quiet fishing town on the south coast of England.

Delve a little deeper though, and you’ll soon discover a wealth of fascinating information and poignant stories about Selsey’s rich fishing heritage which is thought could date back a remarkable 3,600 years.

Selsey can lay claim to having one of the first ever written descriptions of sea fishing anywhere in this country in a book written in 700AD by the Venerable Bede, an English Benedictine monk.

In the book he described the activities of St Wilfrid, an archbishop from the north of England who moved to the royal estate of Selsey in 680AD, founded a monastery and converted the pagan inhabitants of the area to Christianity.

During his time in Selsey Wilfred introduced new ideas and technologies and helped the locals to improve their fishing practices. What was an inland fish trapping industry, whereby locals would fish in rivers with nets to catch eels, was converted by Wilfrid and his monks into a sea fishing enterprise.

THe remains of fish traps dating from the Anglo Saxon to Medieval periods have been found locally at Medmerry. It is an exciting possibility that these are the fish traps described by Bede.

A similar, but smaller structure, which

has subsequently been dated to the Middle Bronze Age was also recently discovered at Medmerry by Chichester District Archaeology Society. If confirmed as a fish trap this could demonstrate that fishing has been present at Selsey for a staggering 3,600 years.

Over the years these traps were replaced by handmade withy pots, of which THe Novium Museum has a number in its collection. THey were used to catch crab and lobster and were typically made in the winter months when weather conditions would generally not allow fishermen to go out and fish.

Instead they would find other work in local factories or on construction sites. In more recent years these withy pots too have been replaced by more robust plastic and metal types.

As a fishing village, Selsey is almost unique along the UK coastline. THis is in part due to its location at the end of a peninsula, and in part due to the rocky outcrops that are present offshore which made navigation exceptionally difficult before modern navigational aids.

THese limestone rocks and reefs provide the perfect habitat for prawns and lobsters and provide rich feeding grounds for fish and crabs which are typically seasonal and migratory.

THese rocky outcrops have proven very dangerous to vessels causing many to run aground and meet their fate there. In 1861 a lifeboat station was first established at Selsey and ever since has had strong ties with the fishing community, many of whom have served as lifeboat crew.

THis enabled them to fish all year round and saw drastically increased profits. THis method of fishing does have its negatives and stocks do have to be carefully managed. To do so there are now a number of bylaws which must be observed.

According to the Government’s April 2019 list of registered and licensed fishing vessels, the Port of Selsey is home to 18 fishing vessels. THe significance of fishing to the people of Selsey has changed over the years, from essential food provision to vital income, tourism and food, but fishing remains a way of life for the fishing families of Selsey and the

fishery remains the very heart of the town.

THe Novium Museum currently has an exhibition, developed in partnership with Selsey Town Council, all about the Selsey fishing industry - Sea’s the Day. THe exhibition, which has been made possible by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund is on until March 2020 and tells the story of the Selsey Fishery through the experiences of local fishing families.

THe exhibition is accompanied by a fascinating range of events, including a willow platter making workshop and evening talks.

GOODWOOD Racecourse boss Alex Eade has hailed the five days of the Festival as tremendous as close to 100,000 flocked to the South Downs for the five day extravaganza.

THrilling racing featuring some of the world's best horses on one of the most picturesque courses in the UK was the major attraction for visitors last week.

Eade said he was delighted with how things had gone for the week - with the number of visitors on a par with last year, despite predicted storms for Tuesday.

Speaking after the five days of racing the Goodwood GM said: "THis has been a truly wonderful week at the Qatar Goodwood Festival with many of racing's stars confirming their superiority and a few new ones burning brightly.

"Stradivarius created his own little piece of history on Tuesday when becoming the first horse to win three successive renewals of the G1 Qatar Goodwood Cup and given we have a Double Trigger Restaurant I will have to find something suitable to name.

"Friday saw another hat-trick landed, another unprecedented record set as Battaash scorched the Goodwood turf to land a third consecutive G2 King George Qatar Stakes, becoming the first horse in the history of the race to do so.

"He is such an outstanding five-furlong performer and so at home here at Goodwood."

He added: "Attendance for the week was just under 100,000 which was very similar to last year. Given the current climate, that is a pleasing result.

Goodwood GM on historic day FOUR months ago she had not even sat on a racehorse. But last week Khadijah Mellah made history by winning the Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood to round off a real fairytale story.

THe amateur rider from Peckham, in south London, had already made it into the record books by becoming the first UK jocket to wear a hijab while competiting.

But she rounded off the day in style by winning the five-and-ahalf-furlong charity race aboard the Charlie Fellowes-trained 25-1 outsider Haverland.

For Goodwood Racecourse's General Manager Alex Eade it is a day he will remember for a long time.

Speaking after a remarkable day of racing last THursday, he said: "It will go down as one of the most historic days in the long history of Goodwood Racecourse.

"It began with 18-year-old Khadijah Mellah's ground-

breaking victory in the Magnolia Cup run in Support of Wellbeing of Women.

"It was an exceptionally emotional moment for many involved and I have never seen scenes like it in a winner's enclosure.

"It felt to me as though something had changed.

"If that wasn't enough, we also witnessed a first success for a Japanese-trained horse at Goodwood when Deirdre landed the G1 Qatar Nassau Stakes.

"It is a long-stated aim of ours to attract the best international raiders to the Qatar Goodwood Festival and to see a horse win from such a racing powerhouse is very satisfying.

"We hope many others will follow in Deirdre's impressive footsteps."

Goodwood's next event is a three-day meeting held over the August Bank Holiday starting August 23.

FA Cup is first up for Chi City CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford has urged everyone to pull together as the club prepare to embark on their first ever season at Step Four.

THe Oaklands Park side swept all before them to one side last season, wining the SCFL Premier title with nearly a month to spare.

But this campaign is set to be a different task, with Chi now joining the ranks of the Isthmian South East for the first time in their history.

Chi have to wait a week for their longawaited first match at this level, with a trip to Ramsgate on August 17.

THe first home game comes a few days later with Whyteleafe making the trip south on August 20 (7.45pm).

Before then though City get their competitive season underway with a FA Cup tie at Oaklands Park against Southern Counties East Premier side Erith Town tomorrow (3pm).

With ÂŁ2,250 to the winners of the extra preliminary round, Chi will have plenty of incentive to get their campaign off to a winning start.

Key to it all though, according to the club's

Sharpies set sail for Chi for Euro championships SAILORS and crew from across Europe will join forces with UK Sharpie Sailors at Itchenor Sailing Club for the 55th European Sharpie Championship later this month.

From August 18 to 24, dozens of boats will take to the water at Chichester Harbour, Bracklesham Bay and Hayling Bay for the .

THere will be a series of ten races and a great social programme with each competing nation hosting a themed evening, including a British Night, Dutch Pancake Night and more during the week culminating in a prize giving ceremony.

It marks a real revivial for the classic two-man racing dinghy which has its roots in 1930s Germany.

THe Sharpie is now sailed in the UK in Brancaster Staithe, Burnham Overy Staithe and Wells in Norfolk. It is also reemerging on the South Coast and in Europe in Holland, Germany and Portugal.

THe European Championship takes place each year and rotates between the four countries.

THis annual event has grown into a sailing extravaganza

over the years with hard and fast competitors sailing for the European title. THis year there are so far 42 competing Sharpies.

James Nunn, Sharpie Fleet Captain said: "Once the magic of a Sharpie enters your lifestyle you become part of it for a very long time, there’s nothing that can compare."

Interest in Sharpie racing is certainly growing again with a host of young sailors partaking and enthusiastic yachtsman from around the UK and Europe taking on many Sharpies as restoration projects.

Several Sharpies have changed hands over the past 12 months and a top condition boat for sale is becoming difficult to find.

Chris Gibbs, Sharpie Sailor said: "THere is nothing more rewarding than seeing a fleet of Sharpies sailing together and is ultimately the reason us Sharpie sailors are members of BSOA (British Sharpie Owners Association) which helps preserve the Sharpie class we all love."

Running CHICHESTER Runners & Athletics Club have been shortlisted for a major award.

THe thriving group who boast more than 130 people who regularly take part in athletics events, is in the running to win the Club of the Year honour at the South East Volunteer Awards Panel of England Athletics.

THe awards ceremony is on October 1 when four committee members will be attending to represent the club.

A spokesman for Chichester Runners said: "THis is a great achievement to be recognised in this way and we trust that members appreciate the club’s focus on developing

potential, providing a wide range of activity suitable for all abilities and our links with the college with all aspects of the club managed by a team of volunteers.

"It is worth pointing out that well over 70 seniors were at training last Monday evening and over 60 regularly attending the Summer Trails."

THe club celebrated after a squad of 21 went to Henfield for the 'Seven Stiles' race and landed an excellent fifth place.

Emma Wickens, Sarah Morris, Tim Brown, Aleks Vargin, Tony Cooley, Nadia Anderson, Jo Prosser, Kevin Williams, Liz Robinson, and Jo Harrison made the team.

Short Mat Bowls TEAMS from across the south east flocked to Sussex last weekend for a tournament of top Short Mat Bowls action.

Boxgrove Village Hall was the venue for Infinity's Open Triples Competition which saw 12 teams from three counties - including one from Essex - take part.

THe teams were split into two groups with the winners of each group battling for the Trophy.

Group One saw Compton's pair of Russel Stallibass and Dan Butler joining Robin Armstrong of Infinity coming out on top.

Group Two winners were Stephen Bucket, Matt Smith and Colin Dickinson from Portsmouth.

In the final the Portsmouth team managed to beat the Compton's team, to lift the trophy.

Denise Kirby of Infinity, said: "THe competition was enjoyed by everyone with several teams asking to be invited again."

Lions and Sids aim to bounce back PAGHAM boss Bob Paine will be hoping the magic of the FA Cup will be a welcome distraction from a tough start to his reign at Nyetimber Lane.

THe former East Preston manager has called for patience as pieces together a young side which is full of potential and promise.

Proof of the task that Paine and his coaching staff have ahead came in the last week when the started their SCFL Premier campaign with two defeats - a 2-0 away loss at AFC Uckfield Town was followed by a 3-0 defeat at home to Saltdean United in midweek.

Tomorrow sees the Lions head north to take on Southern East Counties Premier side Tunbridge Wells in the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup (3pm).

SCFL Division One side Selsey are also in action in the world's oldest knockout competition.

THe Blues head to east London to play Essex Senior League side Tower Hamlets tomorrow (3pm) off the back of an excellent 6-1 win over Roffey in their opening match of the season.

Debutant Max Davies bagged a hat-trick in the ill-tempered match with Callum Dowdell (2) and Lindon Miller rounding off the

scoring.

Speaking after the match, vice chairman Dickie Istead said: "Terrific start today for our youngsters. Not at full strength but what a show of strength from the lads.

"Debutants making an impact along with last season’s spine of the team maturing nicely. We move forward in the right way."

Fellow Division One side Sidlesham started their season in very different style, suffering a 2-1 home loss to Oakwood last weekend.

Sids took the lead after ten minutes when Tom Jefkins poked the ball home at the back post. But, after Sids spurned a number of chances, the visitors slowly got back into the game drawing level with 15 minutes to go.

THen Sids suffered a cruel blow when Oakwood grabbed the winner on the strike of full time.

THe Gold and Greens have a chance to bounce back from defeat tomorrow when they welcome league newcomers Roffey to the Recreation Ground (3pm) in the Peter Bentley Cup. SCFL Division Two side Bosham continued their pre-season with a 2-0 loss to Wittering United last weekend.

Top two is aim for Bognor CC BOGNOR Regis CC can continue their surge towards promotion when they welcome in-form Goring to THe Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side have been surging up the Division Two table in recent weeks thanks to a run of four games without defeat.

An eight-wicket victory over bottom side Lindfield last time out has lifted Bognor into the promotion places, just five points behind leaders Hastings & St Leonards and level on points with third-place Haywards Heath.

Next they host Goring tomorrow, a side who are third bottom but are in a similar run of form to Maskell's XI. Bognor will look to repeat their comfortable victory of last weekend when a fine bowling display dismissed Lindfield for just 52 and set them up for an easy win.

Ben Woolnough took the plaudits, taking a remarkable 4 for 4 off eight overs, five of which were maidens.

Josh Sargeant (3-18) and Joe Ashmore (3-10) also chipped in

before Bognor knocked off the runs in just over 11 overs.

Fellow Division One side Chichester Priory Park continue to look over their shoulders at the relegation zone after suffering a four wicket loss to Goring last weekend.

A solid 60 from Joe De La Fuente helped Chi post 165 all out, a total which proved competitive but ultimately about 20 runs short of really testing the home side.

De La Fuente rounded off a good all round display by taking 3-26 in the reply as Goring reached the score with plenty to spare.

Next for sixth-place Chi is a home match against Billingshurst tomorrow (12.30pm), a side who have won just once in four games.

In Division THree West, second place Pagham will be looking to get their promotion push back on track after suffering a five-wicket loss to leaders Roffey Seconds last weekend.

Next up for the Nyetimber Lane side is a visit to mid-table West Chiltington & THakeham tomorrow (12.30pm)

MIDDLETON CC have second place in the Sussex Premier Division in their sights.

Sean Heather's side have been in excellent form all season springing a number of surprises against more establish top level sides to soar up to third spot in the standings.

An 88-run victory over Preston Nomads last weekend laid down a marker to other teams who may have thought Middleton would fall off as the campaign draws to a close.

Now, the Sea Lane side can go a step further - by beating second-place Brighton & Hove on home territory tomorrow (11.30am).

With just four games of the season to go, Middleton know that a 30 point haul will ensure they leapfrog over their opponents and put them in pole position for a top two finish.

Key to victory will be the form of Heather and overseas player Mahesh Rawat, who have been scoring runs for fun against some of the most feared bowling attacks in the county.

Rawat, who has played in the IPL T20 competition, remains the competition's best batter scoring more than 750 runs in just 12 innings with an astonishing average of 128.

Heather is not far behind him, racking up

more than 600 runs at an average of 56.

He added to that tally last weekend against a strong Preston Nomads side when the skipper top-scored with 88 in Middleton's tally of 233 all out.

Opening the batting, Heather tamed the conditions and the visitors attack hitting 16 fours and one six as he progressed to his third half century of the campaign.

Unfortunately, Heather was unable to find a partner to support him along the way as no one else in the top seven batting spots scored more than 17.

When the skipper went with 168-6 on the board, Middleton may have feared they may not reach the 200 mark.

But a quickfire 38 from Ben Hansford propelled them to 233 all out from 55 overs.

In reply Nomads got off to a solid start adding 34 for the first wicket.

But the departure of openers Usman Khan (21), bowled by Jack Carson (4-49), and Nathan Poole (31) to Craig Fowle (4-42) triggered a middle order collapse from which they never recovered.

THeir 68 for five became 145 all out as Middleton won by a comfortable margin.

Quartet depart the Rocks on season's eve

ROCKS are ready for the big kick off - although they will make the trip to Bishop's Stortford with a trimmed down squad after four players left their camp on the eve of the season.

Bognor boss Jack Pearce believes his side are raring to go for the new campaign, keen to improve on last season's 14th place finish in the Isthmian Premier.

THe first week of the new season brings two very different tests.

First up is a trip to Hertfordshire to face a strong physical Stortford side tomorrow (3pm).

THen in midweek it's back to the Nye Camp for a Sussex derby against newly-promoted Horsham on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Pearce said: "THe squad is shaping up how we want it to and we're confident that we'll be able to take a strong group of players up to Bishop's Stortford for the opening day of the new season."

Preparations for the early season double header took a blow when Rocks were soundly beaten 6-1 in a friendly at Southern League Premier Division South outfit Gosport Borough last week.

After falling behind after two minutes Rocks struggled to match their opponents in a competitive first half.

Two further Gosport goals followed, with Dan Smith's strike

before the break reducing the deficit. THings took a turn for the worse after the interval with three more goals for the home side while skipper Harvey Whyte, Tommy Leigh and Dan Smith all received their marching orders.

But despite fears the trio would miss the opening week of the season Rocks officials have confirmed the red cards are 'competition specific' to mean the players will have to sit out Bognor's next friendly matches.

Ahead of the trip to THe ProKit Stadium tomorrow, Pearce and confirmed they have parted company with a crop of players going into the big kick-off with Ed Sanders, Josh McCormack and Jack Breed seeking pastures new.

Former Portsmouth midfielder Freddie Read has also left the club after being offered a footballing scholarship in the United States.

Pearce said: "THe players who were sent off in the Gosport game are available to us and we may even add one or two to the group as well.

"As for the game at Privett Park on Friday, sometimes in football you're best to put things behind you and move on and that's what we'll do.

"Believe it or not it helped us in our thinking and so although we lost 6-1 there were a few positives that came out of the encounter."

Captain backs strikers to fire

IT may only be pre-season but a familiar fear has started to creep in at the Nye Camp - the spectre of not scoring goals.

Regular visitors to the Rocks over recent seasons will know the feeling well.

THeir side dominate possession, move the ball forward with purpose and create a number of decent chances - only not to convert them.

THis then leaves the door open to their opponents to go up the other end and grab a goal with turns wins into draws and draws into defeats.

But a new season brings new hope. And in the shape of Dan Smith, Jimmy Muitt and Stu Green then Rocks have an attacking trio who netted close to 70 goals in all competitions last campaign.

Even though they are yet to start firing with Bognor averaging less than one goal a game in pre-season - skipper Harvey Whyte is confident the team's frontmen will start firing sooner rather than later.

He said: "To be honest with players like Jimmy - I have always said he may have five bad games but he will have 15 unbelievable ones where he scores.

"As for Smudger [Dan Smith] he was probably our best player before his loan from Portsmouth ended in March last season and he would have boosted our playoff push if he had stayed playing with us till the end of the year.

"I think they are two of the best strikers

in the league and I have no doubt they will both score plenty of goals."

But Whyte added that converting chances does not rest with just two people.

He added: "What we need to do as a team is to help them out, so that if they do have the off day then myself, Stu [Green], Dougie [Tuck], [Tommy] Scutt and James Crane

need to chip and get the goals.

"Our main focus has to be on keeping things tight at the other end of the pitch and getting those clean sheets. If we do that then it makes winning games a lot easier.

"THat's the important thing and if we get those things right then we should do well this season."

NYECAMP NEWS

IT'S nearly that time again the first match of the season...

While the results in preseason have not been the best that does not matter as we've had the chance to try out new players and a few new formations.

In midweek we all had a chance to focus on where we are and where we want to be.

Jack led a team chat and then we had a really good training season where everyone was working hard, looking sharp and really at it.

THere's a really good atmosphere and everyone is looking forward to it.

We have clearly strengthened over the summer.

Both Stu Green and James Crane I have played with before and they bring experience to the club.

Stu is the fittest person I've ever played with - he makes everyone else look unfit so he was a getting a lot of stick from the other lads in pre-season!

He is a good player, though, and one of these players who is always likely to get a goal.

As for Craney he is the type of character that we missed last year.

He is someone who's a leader, he's vocal and will put others straight on the pitch so we welcome him back with open arms.

We go to Bishop's Stortford off the back of a bad loss to Gosport in our last pre-season friendly.

Even though we were badly beaten I am not necessarily that worried as I thought we played some good stuff.

We also knew we would not have our strongest side out with a few triallists at the back.

Meanwhile, they've invested fortunes into the side and will be looking to win their league.

Given they had their first team out, it was always going to be a difficult ask.

THose at the match will also

know that we had a few issues with the referee which resulted in three red cards.

I think it's fair to say I did not agree with all of the decisions but we must keep our discipline moving forward.

We have had that chat in the dressing room and we will get things like that throughout the season, which we have to ride through.

Personally, I think there is a suspension to serve but Jack says myself, Tommy and Smudger are all fine for tomorrow's trip to Bishop's Stortford.

Like most of the teams in this league, they will be a big physical side.

THe main thing for us with it being the first game of the season is that we need to find our feet.

We are more than capable of getting a result as long as we stick to what we are good at.

Personally I am not sure where I will be lining up.

We're missing players like Chad and Calvin so it may be that I slot in at right back to add some experience to our young defensive line.

In central midfield we are looking quite strong with Tommy Leigh, Scutty, Dougie and Stu all good through the middle.

THe main thing is we stay organised and play the football we can sticking to pass and move then we should be OK. As for where we will finish it is hard to say. Any team in this league can go on a run. So we will see where we are around Christmas time and then perhaps we can challenge for the playoffs.

We do need to improve on a lot of things before we start talking about that.

But we have good players, a good squad, a good atmosphere in the camp and with one or two additions we could be up there challenging.
