Public to consult on city plan By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE MAYOR of Chichester has described the city as a jewel that needs a good polish. THe city council got together this week to present ideas for the new Chichester neighbourhood plan to the public. THe plan will help local people influence planning decisions in their area. A neighbourhood plan is a

document written by a parish council to guide future development for a neighbourhood area. THe Mayor, Cllr Richard Plowman held a public meeting on Monday evening to launch the public consultation which was well attended by people in the city. Linda Boyce, a member of the Southern Gateway Residents Association, said that she welcomed the fact a neighbourhood plan was being worked on.

At the meeting, she said: "THis is extremely ambitious. I think it's confusing how you talk about Chichester city and Chichester and I think it needs to be spelt out each time. "People I have spoken to think this whole thing is just about the historic centre, just North, South, East and West Street. I think you will lose the support of the surrounding neighbourhoods." Ideas for the neighbourhood plan have already included a large international hotel of 200-250 beds, removal of level

crossings and replacement with a low level underpass, more train and bus services to and from Chichester and a metro line to Bognor Regis and the coast, a concert/theatre hall up to 550 capacity, a large nightclub and a new crematorium. At the start of the meeting, Cllr Plowman said: "People say to me Chichester is dying. It's not dying. It is changing."
