CHICHESTER District Council has asked for more time to complete the review of the council's local plan.

THe leader of the council, Cllr Eileen Lintill has met the Minister for Local Government and Homelessness, Luke Hall, to ask for the extension.

Cllr Lintill joined the chief executive of Chichester District Council, Diane Shepherd, and Chichester MP Gillian Keegan at the meeting last week.

Mrs Keegan secured the meeting following letters sent to the Secretary of State for Housing, Robert Jenrick, from Chichester District Council and the MP, requesting more time to review the plan due to the complex issues facing the Chichester local plan area.

At the meeting, the group discussed the need to develop a nutrient neutral policy for the Chichester Harbour Catchment area; the need for improvements and funding for the A27 bypass; and the increased need to take account of growing environmental issues.

In response, the minister recognised the significant challenges that the council was facing and has offered the council support to help it meet its deadline to submit its Local Plan by July 2020.

However, he explained that there was no mechanism within national planning guidance to extend the deadline for an individual authority.

Assurance was also given that the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government was already working with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Natural England, the Environment Agency and local authorities in the Solent area, to help find a strategic solution to improve water quality in Chichester Harbour and along the Solent.

THe A27 is also a key dependency for the local plan, and Mrs Keegan has secured a further meeting with the Roads Minister, following her previous meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport, to discuss improvements and funding for the A27.

"Although we are disappointed that there is no mechanism to extend the deadline, we have taken up the offer of support from the Minister of Local Government and Homelessness to help us meet this critical deadline,” says Cllr Lintill.

"Our chief executive has already arranged to meet with the Planning Advisory Service and officials from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government next week, to move this forward.

"While meeting with the minister, we raised our concerns about the housing numbers that we are expected to take.

THe minister explained that the housing numbers are based on housing need and not on the capacity of the plan area to deliver them.

"As Chichester is one of the most unaffordable places to live, an affordability ratio is applied, which increases the amount of housing that is needed in the area. If we believe we do not have the capacity to deliver our housing numbers, then we must support this with strong evidence, which will be tested at public examination. However, if the evidence shows that we can meet the numbers, then we will be required to plan for the number of houses set by the Government.

"What is vital now is to make sure that we meet the July 2020 deadline.

Wildlife hospital helps to save city hedgehogs

THE DISTRICT'S wildlife hospital had a special stand in a hardware store in the city over the weekend to help raise awareness of hedgehogs.

Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital in Sidlesham held an awareness stand at Homebase in Barnfield Drive on Saturday.

Homebase held an in-store hedgehog trail with Henry, Hetty, Harriet, Herbert, Hannah and Harry hiding in store and ready to spread the word about how people can help them thrive.

Asha Park, supporter relations & fundraising manager at the charity said: "THe nation’s favourite wild mammal

needs all the help it can get at this time of year. Once a common sight in our gardens and countryside the hedgehog population has declined dramatically in recent years.

"Habitat loss resulting in shrinking territories and lack of food sources has had a massive negative impact on hedgehog numbers. Due to longer summers and milder winters hedgehogs are breeding later in the year, leaving many young hoglets too small to survive or left abandoned during the hibernation period."

Each year Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital cares for around 600 hedgehogs and they currently have over 100 hedgehog casualties in their care.

"THanks to Homebase in Chichester

raising awareness about the plights faced by hedgehogs with their hedgehog trail, we were able to spend the day at the store helping to educate customers about simple things they can do to help hedgehogs thrive," said Asha.

"It was a joy to engage with so many people who are passionate about helping their local wildlife. Creating hedgehog walkways to link gardens and green spaces, providing hedgehog houses and feeding stations, improving garden habitats with wildlife-friendly planting, log piles and water are some of the things gardeners can do to help these vulnerable creatures."

Liz Oliver, interim director of compliance for Hyde, said: "THe safety of our residents and buildings is paramount and Hyde is determined not to take any risks.

"An example of this is the fire safety work that we are currently carrying out at Grainger House. Following advice from external fire safety experts, potential issues around compartmentation were identified .

"A detailed, intrusive fire risk assessment is being carried out today where we will then have a better understanding of any work that may need to be carried out.

"In the meantime, as a precaution, after liaising with residents a waking watch was installed on October 23, and the fire strategy has been changed from ‘stay put’ to ‘simultaneous evacuation’.

"THe waking watch will be reviewed on completion of the intrusive fire risk assessment, at which point it may be removed or reduced."

THe letter went on to say: "In line with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service advice, we ask you to be vigilant; avoid blocking access points to the building and help keep all communal areas free of obstructions.

"We would like to thank you for your cooperation during this period and

want to assure you that the safety of our residents is our priority."

A fire action policy which was also sent to residents stated: "Please note that until further notice Grainger House has a simultaneous evacuation policy.

"Grainger House has been purposebuilt to stop fire spreading. THe walls, floors and doors are designed to resist fire and smoke."

Cllr Sarah Sharp said: "As one of the councillors for Chichester south I have been in regular contact with residents about a large number of issues connected with Liberator Place since the summer.

"My key aim has been to get responses or answers for the residents and this hasn’t always been easy but some small changes are being made which is promising. I am hopeful that going forward communication will be improved.

"THis potential risk of fire is a huge worry to me as are all the other concerns I have been told about but I am doing my best to find out what is going on and to speak to Hyde staff about actions they are taking.

I just wish that residents’ concerns had been listened to and acted upon earlier."

Huge investment to step up city's electricity performance

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE CITY is set to benefit from an investment by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to boost the resilience of the area’s power supply.

Homes and businesses in Chichester will see nearly £650,000 invested in the electricity network that supplies around 27,000 local customers, through a project to upgrade existing electrical equipment – including three substations - and refurbish the underground cable network.

THe work will reduce the possibility of unplanned interruptions to the area’s power supply and is part of SSEN’s commitment to taking a 'you said, we did' approach to investing in its vital infrastructure.

THe initial phase of the upgrade programme will begin on Monday,

November 11, when SSEN’s engineers will begin replacing link boxes in St Martin's Street, St Martin's Square, and on small areas of East Street, West Street, South Street and North Street. None of these local works will result in any major road closures or the use of traffic management systems.

Having engaged with local organisations and authorities, SSEN says it will halt the works over the festive period to minimise any potential disruption or noise for those living and working in the immediate area.

THe works will then recommence on Monday, January 6, 2020 and will last for a period of ten weeks.

SSEN’s project lead Graham Humpston said: "Chichester has been identified for this investment programme to boost the resilience of the local power supply and ensure its safety and reliability for years to come.

"We’re aware that it’s a busy city and have been very conscious about planning these works to ensure they don’t cause any inconvenience to residents and businesses, especially during the festive period.

"THis coming Monday (November 4,) the SSEN team will be at a stand on North Street from 2pm until 6pm, and we’d ask anyone interested in the work we’re doing to boost the power supply to their city to come along and talk to us.

"We’ll also be giving out advice on the free additional services that SSEN can provide, so if any customers are concerned that they may need additional assistance during power cuts, they can find out more about signing up to our Priority Services Register."

Green MEP electrifies the city

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN ELECTRIC bus brought a Member of European Parliament (MEP) into the city on Monday night.

City residents and business owners had the chance to meet Green Party's Alex Phillips – MEP for the south east.

She visited Chichester as part of her tour after she recently published a report outlining what a Green New Deal (GND) could look like in practice.

Alex arrived in North Street on a solarpanelled electric bus and made her way to the Assembly Rooms where she joined a panel made up of councillors and business people.

THe panel included Cllr Kevin Hughes, city and district councillor for the Labour party, Cllr Johnathan Brown, district councillor for the Liberal Democrats, Kay Mawers, owner of Clothkits, in Drapers Yard and Graham Howe, sales manager for SeaRoc on South Street.

Alex visited towns and cities across the region to discuss plans for a Green New Deal, which the Green Party state would see the UK make huge strides towards achieving crucial environmental carbon-neutral targets, as well as revitalising the economy, industry, and training prospects for workers of all ages.

THe Green Party say that a Green New Deal is all about giving power back to communities - enabling them to choose how funding is spent and investing in local projects.

Before the meeting, speaking exclusively to the Chichester Post, Alex said: "We are doing a tour across the

whole of the south-east region which is nine different counties including the Isle of Wight.

"We have chosen Chichester as the location in this county to come to for a variety of reasons but mainly because the Green's did so well here in the recent council elections earlier this year.

"THe Green New Deal would mean a living wage, a genuine living wage and secure, well paid-jobs. It's about having local jobs that are well-paid but also secure because those are the problems facing us at the moment."

During the meeting, members of the public asked various questions on subjects including council housing, reducing the use of fossil fuels, higher tax on empty homes,

houses being built on flood risk areas, the use of electricity and the balance of the pros and cons of offshore wind farms to damage to animals.

THe panel responded to all the questions raised with varying viewpoints on each topic.

Cllr Hughes said: "Climate justice, social justice and economic justice are inexplicably linked.

"It's all very well saying you should be buying biodegradable party bags for

your kid's party but if the first thing you think about in the morning is actually 'how am I going to feed my kids?' or 'am I going to get any work on my zero hours contract today?' then I'm afraid the next thought is not going to be 'how can I be more environmentally friendly?'

"So unless you solve most of these problems at the same time, you are not going to make it easy for the majority of people to behave in an environmentally friendly way."

` Police reports DURING the week from Monday, October 14, to Sunday, October 20, numerous reports were made to police, which included: In Shopwhyke Road, Chichester, on Monday, October 14, police received a report of a residential burglary between 9pm and 11pm.

A bike was stolen from the property.

Serial 0017 14/10.

In Parklands Road, Chichester, on Tuesday, October 15, an attempt burglary was reported.

THe suspects were disturbed by a neighbour and no entry was gained to the property. Serial 0757 15/10.

In High Street, East Wittering also on Tuesday, a Peugeot 108 vehicle was stolen. Serial 1291 15/10.

On Wednesday, October 16, police received a report of a residential burglary to an unoccupied property in Dean Lane End, Rowlands Castle. THe suspects left the scene in a purple LandRover. Serial 0859 16/10.

In Duncton, Petworth overnight into Wednesday, October 16, an outbuilding at a residential property was broken into and six bikes were stolen. Serial 0336 16/10.

In Chilgrove, Chichester on Friday, October 18, police received a report that a property was broken into. Serial 0497 18/10.

In Bognor Road, Chichester also on Friday, a vehicle was broken into and keyboard stolen. Serial 1269 18/10.

On Saturday, October 19, a residential burglary in THe Peacheries, Chichester, was reported. Serial 0867 19/10.

Train users have been experiencing delays after extensive works have been taking place at Chichester and down the line.

THe work involved has meant closing the line and a number of level crossings over nine days from Saturday, October 26 to Sunday (November 3), plus two Sundays and one further weekend.

THis has allowed 2.3km of new track to be laid and improvement work to be carried out at stations affected by the closure.

Buses will replace trains between Barnham and Havant this weekend (Saturday, November 2, to Sunday, November 3) and today (Friday, November 1,) buses will replace trains between Chichester and Havant.

Dan Athol, programme director for Network Rail said: "Our extensive passenger information campaign has seen tens of thousands of impacted passengers informed about this important work and their travel options during the line upgrade.

"Level crossing closures have also impacted traffic flow in the area, particularly around Chichester.

"Hundreds of dedicated engineers have been working uninterrupted 24 hours a day, enabling us to get the work done in nine days, as opposed to 18 separate weekends.

"We've also taken this opportunity to carry out some station improvements. When passengers catch their regular services again from Monday morning, they will notice a tidier station."

Governors hit out on schools FRUSTRATED governors from five small schools have laid into the way West Sussex County Council has handled a consultation into their futures.

Views are being sought about the futures of Clapham & Patching Primary, Rumboldswhyke C of E Infants in Chichester, Stedham Primary, Warninglid Primary, and Compton & Up Marden schools, which the council’s School Effectiveness Strategy labelled ‘at risk’ due to problems such as falling numbers and financial viability.

At a meeting of a task and finish group, set up to look into the entire process in detail, chairman Cllr Hilary Flynn told governors the meeting was about ‘listening rather than anything else’ – and she and the other councillors were certainly given plenty to hear.

THe governors hit out at the accuracy of some of the information used in the consultation, a lack of openness with the schools, and the ‘abject failure’ of the council’s scrutiny process.

Some said concerns about low pupil numbers had become a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’, with parents changing their minds about sending their children to the schools in light of the uncertainty being faced.

THe consultation will run until November 25, and, for four of the schools, people are being asked for their views on seven options – academisation, amalgamation, closure, federation, the linking of infant and junior schools, relocation or no change.

For Rumboldswhyke the only options being explored are academisation and closure.

Governor David Barty was one of those who called for the consultation to be stopped. He said: “We feel this whole process has been handled very, very badly.

It needs to be stopped. We need to sort it out properly and then move forward.”

THe plan had originally been to start the consultation in September – it was later deferred to October – but the council made its announcement shortly before the end of term in July, leaving parents and teachers distressed.

Paul Wagstaff, director of education and skills, said he was confident the whole process had been ‘managed and overseen appropriately’.

THe meeting was told that there had been around 300 responses to the consultation so far.

Public meetings are due to be held at Rumboldswhyke School on November 7, from 6.30pm-8pm, and Compton & Up Marden School on November 11, from 6.30pm-8pm.

Nigel Jupp, cabinet member for education and skills, is expected to announce the proposals for each school in January or February. THere will be another six weeks for people to have their say before he makes a final decision in February or March.

THe decisions will take effect on August 31, 2020.

` An author talk ON THURSDAY, West Sussex Library Service is hosting a talk with world-famous author Ken Follett at Chichester Cathedral.

THe event celebrates the 30th anniversary of his epic novel Pillars of the Earth (part of the Kingsbridge series), an historical novel about the building of a cathedral set in the middle of the 12th century.

He will also be discussing his latest book Notre-Dame, a short exploration into the history of Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Ken will talk about his love of cathedrals and gothic architecture and how these have fed into and inspired his writing. He will also touch on his past work, as well as look forward to the publication of his highly-anticipated new Kingsbridge novel.

Old Vic celebrates his 90th

A BELOVED character in Selsey celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday.

Affectionately known as 'Old Vic' - Vic Nicholls was surrounded by family and friends at the community cafe in the High Street for his celebrations.

Held at THe Shop, a community cafe and art gallery where Vic's photograph proudly hangs above a Union flag, Selsey residents gathered for sing-songs and cake.

Vic told the Chichester Post: "I am feeling very happy today with all this.

People have come here and given me a boost.

"I come to this shop every day, they are like my second family in here. It is run by the churches and the people are very kind. THey came to my aid when I lost my wife Vartanoush two and half years ago.

"THey use me as a little senior attraction! THe old and the young come in and get the entertainment which is me! I get all the songs going!"

Vic is an army veteran who had a long and varied career which ranged from working with the vice squad in Hong Kong to being in charge of 200 war dogs.

He was also an excellent, semiprofessional singer, and still performs at the monthly musical afternoons.

For Vic's special day on Tuesday, musicians including a keyboard player gathered at the shop along with Vic's friends, nephew Terry, niece Lynda, daughter Vanita and son Victor.

Vic said the secret to reaching 90 was a good life of 27 years in the army. He met his beloved wife of around 57 years in Cyprus where she was born and said he

would marry her as soon as he saw her.

THey were later stationed in Chichester Barracks and moved to Selsey when they left the army after Vartanoush said she wanted to be by the sea.

He said: "I was a military policeman in the army. In the photograph on the wall, on that particular day, I had seen the horse for the first time. He was brought up from Aldershot.

"THe Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) he was there on a horse. I had to start right behind a big military band. So I get on this horse and adjust everything and I think he's a nice, docile horse.

"As I take my place at the head of the column, the RSM says: 'Vic, watch out for the horse!' and I asked why and he said: 'he doesn't like the big bass drum!'

"THe band struck up with a five pace roll (five drum bangs) and the horse started lurching around and people in the crowd started saying: 'oh look the horse is dancing!' but we had a successful parade."

A cake with 90 candles was presented to Vic and he successfully blew them all out and exclaimed: "Not bad for 90 years of age!"

Stitching up a successful show in the city with the talented quilters

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SEWING enthusiasts were in for a treat when they visited the Quilt Show on Saturday at the Assembly Rooms.

THe Chichester Quilters held the show in the city centre to promote and display some of their members' work.

Pieces ranged from huge quilts to smaller blankets, pictures and squares all displaying intricate sewing skills and designs.

THe members were keen to show one particular work in progress, a hexagon quilt from the 1960s. THe patchwork quilt was designed and started by Ann Roberts and came to the Chichester Quilters last year in a bag. Most of the diamonds had been competed but not sewn together to form the blanket. In the bag, the members found a numbered diagram detailing how all of the diamonds should be arranged and so the members have been trying to finish her quilt according to this plan.

Ann trained as a nursery nurse in the early 1940s and subsequently became a nanny to a family in Hampshire. When the youngest daughter left home for boarding school at 13, Ann moved to Dorset where she established her own nursery school.

Ann enjoyed all sorts of needlecrafts including soft furnishings, dressmaking, smocking and patchwork. She made an altar cloth and kneelers for her local church and became an active member of her community for over 50 years. Aged 90, Ann died in 2017 with no close family to inherit the unfinished quilt so the

Chichester Quilters took on the project to complete it for her.

Chairman of the Chichester Quilters, Suzanne Boulter said: "Women today work more and you do need time for this.

We do love having younger members but they are sadly few and far between, it does tend to be something you do when you retire.

"THere seems to be a resurgence in these crafts with programmes such as THe Great British Sewing Bee and also as we are getting more conscious about reusing things.

"Some people do go to second hand shops and jumble sales and pick up old shirts and they make lovely quilts because it's good quality cotton and good designs."

Suzanne also recalled how she started patchwork in the 1970s before she had children. Around ten years ago, her mother-in-law, who was a quilter, had a stroke and could no longer quilt.

She said: "I went into her sewing room and found bags of scraps and as I pulled them out I found the scraps from the wedding dress she made, my maternity clothes, little girl's dresses for my daughters etc. It was so emotive.

"I sat there and cried and realised I couldn't get rid of the scraps because I had a personal connection to them.

She had made a quilt for one of my daughter's using these scraps and then I made a quilt with the same scraps but a differen't design so she is using them both on her twin beds."

Quilts on display included ‘A Little Moorish’ by Judith Lapage who said: “I saw this quilt design at a quilt show and

thought it would be a great way of using up my scraps. I used 1,280 individually cut and sewn 2inch squares, plus 282 plain 3.5inch squares (cut from strips thankfully) to make the quilt top.

“Fabrics have come from my stash and those of two friends to add variety. THis was free motion quilted by me, with the help of a friend, on a Bernina long arm machine. My first attempt so I chose a very simple but effective design.”

THe Chichester Quilters donate some of the profits to children's chairty THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust, providing nursing care at home, for children who have a life threatening or terminal illness.

Di Levantine, chair and co-founder of THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust, commented: "THe Chichester Quilters have been long time supporters of the trust.

"THis show was truly stunning and they transformed the Assembly Rooms with their wonderful work. So much time goes into making these quilts and we are so grateful to them for their fundraising initiatives.

"It was my absolute pleasure to draw the raffle on Saturday.

Community groups such as these are a real lifeline to the charity and we love being connected with events such as these.

"THe money raised will go towards vital nursing care in the home of local children who have a life threatening or terminal illness. Well done to all the organisers for such a great exhibition."

Memory Boxes are a new initiative aimed to trigger long-term memory recognition for those living with dementia.

THe Memory Boxes, which will be taken to care homes and day centres in Chichester by Co-op colleagues, will be filled with memorabilia.

THey are used to encourage people with dementia to engage with the memorabilia, prompting conversations about their lives and to reminisce about the past.

THe concept was initially thought of by one of Co-op’s funeral directors in Scotland when he became mindful that many people within his local community were being affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s, which was leading to feelings of loneliness.

Special new city road signs

Following a request from the Chichester Branch of the Royal Sussex Regimental Association, Chichester City Council is delighted to announce that street signs on Roussillon Park have been replaced.

THe new signs include citations about the Victoria Cross recipients whom the roads are named after.

THe roads are: • Carter Road • Johnson Mews • McNair Way • Queripel Mews In approving the change, members of the city council's finance committee agreed strongly that it was very important that future generations were aware of the history behind the road names and of the sacrifices made by the members of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

Mayor of the city Cllr Richard Plowman said: "THe city council is responsible for street naming and we try to make the street names relevant wherever possible to Chichester’s rich history so given that site was formerly Roussillon Barracks, the name signs to honour the VC recipients is entirely appropriate to remember these brave soldiers."

In February 1916, an enemy mine exploded under the front line trenches held by the 9th Battalion.

Although much shaken, he at once organised his men and with a machine gun team drove off the advancing enemy.

THen, across open ground and under heavy fire, he brought forward reinforcements. THe award of the Victoria Cross was for his most conspicuous bravery.

• Queripel Mews: Captain Lionel Ernest Queripel VC (1920-1944).

At the Battle of Arnhem, when serving with THe Parachute Regiment, he rescued a wounded Sergeant and was wounded himself.

He led an attack on a strong-point and re-captured a British anti tank gun.

Later as his company position became untenable he ordered his men to withdraw but stayed behind to give them covering fire.

THe award of the Victoria Cross was for his courage, leadership and inspiration to all.

Where's Wally hidden?

CHILDREN played a special game of seek when they tried to spot a lovable character in Chichester's art gallery.

THis half-term, Wally, one of the world’s most famous children’s book character – wearing a red-and-white striped shirt and black-rimmed specs – has been travelling the country and appearing in museums, including a visit to the city's Pallant House Gallery.

Families have been joining in the search for Wally as part of Where’s Wally? THe Big Museum Hunt, organised

by Walker Books and Kids in Museums, to celebrate the release of the new book, Where’s Wally? Double Trouble at the Museum.

Jenna Little and her daughter Millie, aged five visited the gallery this week and THe hunt has been running at the gallery since Saturday, October 26 and

finishes this Sunday (November 3).

Families can join in the search for Wally in the gallery's search-andfind trail as part of this nationwide campaign, giving families the chance to receive an ‘I Found Wally!’ sticker at the end and to enter the Where’s Wally? and Kids in Museums grand prize draw competition.

Recruiting new Roman soldiers for half-term

IT WASN'T just Halloween fun on offer for children this half-term, particularity for those visiting the Fishbourne Roman Palace.

Children got the chance to join the Fishbourne Roman Army at the Roman Palace.

After signing in with their name in Latin, they marched with a drill officer,

got an army tattoo, joined in with sword practice and discovered what the soldiers ate and how they cured common ailments.

Once qualified, they received a certificate and their first day’s pay as a Roman soldier.

Betina Blake, marketing and admin coordinator at the palace said: " Children enjoyed the chance to find out about life in the Roman Army.

` Friend service A CHARITY is launching a new befriending service for older people in Bognor Regis and Chichester, thanks to its group of volunteers.

THis new initiative by Coastal West Sussex Mind coincides with National Befriending Week, which starts today (November 1).

THe five befrienders will help people of 65 and over whose mental health barriers might be preventing them from getting out and about. THis is part of the charity’s Communities in Mind service in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Area manager Jo Bulis said: "THe people we want to help might be isolated, lacking confidence and feeling low or depressed.

"Our befrienders could meet them for a chat either in their own home or at a cafe. THis can build up to accompanying them to one of our small, social Communities in Mind groups.

“THe aim is to develop their confidence further and help them feel able to attend other places in their community or to reconnect with previous interests and hobbies.”

THe Coastal West Sussex Mind befrienders, Paul, Phill, Charlie, Vanessa and Axel, are all having training in supporting people with mental health needs and are DBS checked.

Volunteers can handle the heat

More than 20 people from around the Post area impressed the crowd as they walked across smoking hot embers at Bognor Regis Football Club.

As part of the fundraiser for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Bosham, volunteers signed up to take part in the fire walk - or the Lego walk - cheered on by friends and family.

Alex Burch, community fundraising manager for St Wilfrid’s, said: “We are delighted so many keen supporters braved the coals and Lego bricks to support St Wilfrid’s and have a spooktacular good time.

“We were delighted to raise over £4500, which will help St Wilfrid’s continue providing support to families facing terminal illness in the local community “THe last one of these was well over a decade ago but it’s such a great idea. It doesn’t take a lot of training.

“We wanted to put on something that is interesting and definitely something in Bognor Regis. We have have so much support here.

“St Wilfrid's is only 16 per cent funded by the NHS. We have to raise the rest.

"We rely on the community so we want to thank the people who support us. We have got more than 100 people coming to the disco tonight, including lots of children.

“We are a charity we need people to support us and this is one of the many ways to do this.

“We have multiple events throughout the year. Lots of small and big events to appeal to lots of different people.

"We’re really appreciative of all the help we get.”

People of all ages took part in the walk, with the youngest lego walker being 11 and the oldest fire walker being in their 70s.

Hannah Mapely, of Felpham, took part in the fire walk. She said: “St Wilfrid's looked after my dad. Unfortunately he died three years ago and it would have been his birthday this week.

"THe support has been amazing, from people who I’ve never met before.

"Complete strangers are encouraging and helping each other it’s great.

"So far I’ve raised £561 thanks to friends and family.

Sammie Harvey, of Selsey, and Paula Lockwood, of Middleton, were also among the many fire-walkers.

Sammie’s mum was supported by St Wilfrid's until she passed away in March.

“THe fire walk was nerve-wracking,” she said, “but there’s also a really great sense of pride that goes with it.”

As well as the fire walk, the evening's entertainment also included a Lego walk and Halloween inspired disco.

Party games kept everyone busy, from musical pumpkins to monster freeze dancing.

Office furniture REPLACING office furniture has cost West Sussex County Council almost £320,000 over the past three years.

THe figures were shared at a meeting of the full council following a question from Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Dr James Walsh to Bob Lanzer, cabinet member for corporate relations.

In 2016/17, £19,238 was spent on furniture, rising to £151,752 in 2017/18 and dropping to £148,307 in 2018/19.THe budget for each year was £175,000.

Asked how the council could justify ‘replacing perfectly serviceable tables and chairs in most of the committee rooms’, Mr Lanzer said none of the old furniture would be wasted and would be used in other areas such as the fire service training room.

He added that the new furniture was lighter and had wheels, meaning one member of staff could move them without having to call another for help.

Pointing out that the carpet in one of the committee rooms had had to be repaired twice due to people dragging the heavy tables around, he added: "THe expenditure will reduce carpet repair maintenance and will enable facilities to provide a better service to meeting rooms in the main building, Edes House, THe Grange and Northleigh."

Mr Lanzer did not know when the furniture was last replaced, though Dr Walsh suggested it had been within the last 15 years.

Pie shop starts a toy campaign

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk KIND-HEARTED customers at a popular pie shop are being urged to donate toys ahead of the festive celebrations to help spread some Christmas joy amongst poorly children.

Bosses at award-winning Turner's Pies have launched a campaign to try to bring some cheer to youngsters who will spend some of the yuletide holiday on a hospital ward.

THe new toys and gifts for girls and boys – which need to be unwrapped -- will be collected in Christmas crates installed at the pie-makers' stores in Chichester, and Bognor Regis and will be handed over to the children on Bluefin Children’s Ward in Worthing Hospital.

Turner's Pies, voted class champion with their steak and mature cheddar pie at this year's British Pie Awards, has teamed up with Love Your Hospital, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust’s fundraising arm, for the charitable drive.

Turner’s Pies senior manager Joe Turner was on hand to kick things off at the campaign launch ceremony, when he accepted the first donations from caring customers.

He said: "As a company, we are super keen to play as big a role as we can in the communities we serve.

We've admired for some time the fantastic work that Love Your Hospital undertake and we are delighted that they have accepted us as a partner for this campaign and are right behind our efforts to try to bring some joy to

deserving children at Christmas.

"We've placed Christmas collection crates in all our shops as of Monday, October 21 and would love to fill them to the brim. So, if you have any toys that you might want to donate we'd love to see you. Once we've collected them we'll ask Father Christmas to make a special delivery to the ward and try to spread some festive smiles amongst the children and staff."

Love Your Hospital is the dedicated charity for the three hospitals that make up Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprising St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, Worthing Hospital and Southlands Hospital in Shoreham.

THey exist to fund the very latest equipment, enable staff to provide outstanding healthcare and ensure patients have access to the best and most modern facilities.

John Price, the charity’s corporate company fundraiser, says he can't wait to see all the goodies light up the faces of the children as Christmas nears.

He added: "We’re delighted to team up with Turner’s Pies for this campaign, which will make a huge difference to the experiences of children and their families who find themselves in hospital over Christmas."

Phil Turner, managing director of Turner’s Pies, said the business was gearing up to make the campaign as successful as possible.

` Slindon concert

Energy bills WITH WINTER just around the corner, West Sussex County Council is urging residents to switch and lock-in the price they pay for their energy.

According to Ofgem’s 2019 State of the Energy Market report published earlier this month, switching is on the rise.

However, half of all households still say they have either never switched energy provider or have done so just once.

Many of these consumers will be on their supplier’s most expensive ‘standard variable’ tariff and could typically be paying up to £260 per year more than they need to for their gas and electricity.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for the environment, said: "We all have the lights and heating on a little longer in the winter, which is why it’s a very good time to see whether you can get a better deal for your energy at home.

"You’ll find all the information you need to compare energy tariffs, such as the gas and electricity you use and how much you are paying, on your most recent bill.

“Our own council-supported energy supplier, Your Energy Sussex, is one option worth considering. STAR vocalist Rachael Hawnt is set to return to Slindon College to give another special live performance as part of the college’s festive fundraiser this Christmas.

Professional singer Rachael, a finalist in the BBC1 TV show All Together Now, will once again be accompanied by Ashley Cutler on the college's grand piano at the ‘Christmas by Candlelight at the College’ event on THursday, December 19.

Last year’s event was hailed as an astounding success, exceeding the college’s fundraising target for its Playground Project.

THis year the college is raising funds for the new Sensory Garden Project. THe aim is to improve the current ornamental garden by developing it further into a 'Sensory Garden'.

THis will help the boys access a fun educational resource allowing them to explore their senses and nature through sound, smell, texture, sight etc as well as being a calming place to relax and unwind.

Country centre helps fight against deadly tree disease

Ash dieback is a growing concern across the country including in West Sussex and the Aldingbourne Country Centre wants to help stop it from spreading within the landscape.

THis fungal disease is changing the local habitats, and according to West Sussex County Council, 'the disease has the potential to kill 95 per cent of West Sussex ash trees over the next 10–20 years.'

THe council says this would have a major impact on the county’s landscape, the wildlife it supports and other ecosystems.

THe spores are generally released between June and September, and the disease can spread locally by wind dispersal in an area over ten miles.

THe symptoms are often easier to spot

in mid-late summer, when a healthy ash should be in full leaf. It becomes much harder to identify in autumn, when leaves are naturally changing colour and falling.

With the threat of the disease, the Aldingbourne Country Centre near Chichester decided to survey their grounds during the summer to help monitor and reduce the environmental impact this disease is taking locally.

THe survey highlighted several trees in the country centre woodland walk to be infected, and as a matter of precaution the woodland was closed while the maintenance work could be carried out on the infected trees.

As a result of these findings, the country centre has said it will continue to assess the health of their ash trees and plan its response to reduce the spread of this disease. THe woodland walk is now fully open for all to enjoy.

Once the trees are cut down, you need to manage their disposal

effectively so that the disease is not accidentally spread by transporting the waste wood.

Forest Research suggests that movement of logs or unsawn wood from infected trees might also be a pathway for the disease, although this is considered to be a low risk.

As the country centre has biomass boilers on site which are currently run on the waste wood they collect as part of their community wood recycling scheme, they have decided to burn all the trees onsite.

"THis will remove the transportation risk of spreading the disease, but also give the trees a purpose by creating energy to heat our Country Centre throughout the winter." said Peter Stanley, general manger at the Aldingbourne Country Centre.

` Car Free Day ORGANISERS are getting together next week to discuss plans for next year's Car Free Day. THe launch of Car(e) Free Day for 2020 takes place on Monday at the Bassil Shippam Centre, where there will be a discussion and film evening courtesy of Eco Cinema Chichester and Car Free Chichester.

THe event was due to take place this year, on International Car Free Day (September 22) but a playing out order was cancelled by the district council after safety fears were sparked.

As reported in the Chichester Post, a Freedom of Information Request (FOI) by Jan Cosgrove, who is national secretary of Fair Play for Children, an organisation for the child’s right to play, was sent to Chichester District Council and listed his questions.

Full steam ahead for model railway exhibition in the city

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk IT WAS full steam ahead for around 500 train enthusiasts at the Chichester Lions Club's 25th annual model railway exhibition.

THe event at Chichester High School in Kingsham Road on Saturday was officially opened by the mayor of Chichester, Cllr Richard Plowman.

Trade stands were scattered around the site, selling a wide range of models, equipment, modelling tools and books to provide modellers with all the essentials they need to build their own layout at home.

Sarah and Graham Harts from Bracklesham Bay, attended with their daughter Helen, aged nine and five-yearold son, Greg.

Graham aid: “THis is our first time here. We were thinking of getting Greg a Hornby set for Christmas and really needed some inspiration of where to begin and maybe some advice.

"THis event is fantastic, it's cheap to get in and they have so much here."

Helen said: "I don't think people should say trains are only for boys. I don't really like them but I would play with one at home.

"Me and Greg play with cars at home a lot and we really like that and I bet Greg will ask Santa for some train stuff for Christmas now."

THere were 22 layouts of various scales and sizes ranging from the smallest 'N'-

gauge working exhibits to the largest 5 inch-gauge static display the 'Bigger Trains' stand.

In between, the layouts showed how best to use smaller spaces for 'TT' and '00' layouts, and the enjoyment to be had from going to larger scales including 'O'-gauge (clockwork and electric) and SM32’s live-steam.

Cllr Plowman said: "THe Lions have been putting on an excellent model railway exhibition for 25 years.

"I have also had the privilege of exhibiting there in the past so this was a really special occasion to be there as mayor, open the show, meet all the exhibitors and award the prizes. A great day.”

Prizes were awarded for the Mayor’s choice of best layout – the Tramway, for the Lion President’s choice.- Little Cleavon , and for the best score on the I-Spy game.

Chris Cheney of the model railway committee Lions Club of Chichester said: "Considering the weather, we were very pleased that so many attended. We would like to say a very big thank you to all those who came and enjoyed the show, and to the eight local companies who kindly sponsored it.

"All proceeds from the exhibition go to the Lions Club’s fund which assists those in need and local charitable organisations."

Poundland opens RETAIL giant Poundland is set to open its doors this weekend in its new home in the former HMV premises.

As reported in the Chichester Post, Poundland in East Street closed its doors on May 11 of this year.

A spokesperson said at the time: “We love being in Chichester but the landlord has negotiated a deal with a different retailer.

"We’re sorry for the disappointment to our colleagues and customers.

We’d love to return if we find a suitable location."

It was just two months later that Poundland confirmed it was set to take over the former HMV store at 7-8 East Street.

shop was confirmed as one of the stores to be closed in February after the company went into administration.

A new fascia has appeared and the former doors have now changed.

Signs on the shops frontage confirm the shop will open this weekend on Saturday, November 2, from 10am.

THe giant posters also say that the first 50 customers to visit the shop on opening day will be given a 'golden envelope' which could contain vouchers for Poundland between £5 and £50.

Pound Hound, the store's mascot will also be present on the opening day to greet customers and help them to 'sniff out amazing value'.

Spookily good fun at the open air museum

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PUMPKIN carving, paper bats, pine-cone hedgehogs, bubble monsters, and leaf bookmarks were all fun activities on offer at the district's open air museum this halfterm.

Children visiting the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum over the autumn school break were able to get crafty and enjoy the fresh air with a range of entertainment.

Lydia Hill from Emsworth visited with her three children, Harry aged six, Martin aged eight an ten-year-old Julia.

She said: “It’s been a really fantastic day out. THe kids have been really busy all day doing so many different activities.

It's just fabulous value for money.

"We visited in the summer and enjoyed a nice warm day. It's chilly today but you just wrap up warm and the kids still enjoy it and get some fresh air!"

Harry said: “My favourite thing to do today was the bubble monster. I like monsters."

Julia preferred the pumpkin carving, saying: "I really like making a scary face in the pumpkin. I'm going to put it outside our front door when I get home so people doing trick or treating will visit our house."

THere were also character hunt games for visitors to play and children were encouraged to come in fancy dress.

Activities not relating to Halloween were still on offer including tours, exhibitions, visits to the horses and pigs and the new

family activity hub.

Marketing manager, Emma Keen said: "We’ve enjoyed a fantastic half term here at the museum this week with plenty of Halloween themed fun for families to enjoy.

"Making the most of our rural setting, we’ve hosted outdoor trails and an autumn hunt as well as activities such as pumpkin carving, face painting and storytelling.

"THis weekend we look forward to our latest Historic Life Weekend, which will look at fire and light. Visitors can discover how homes in the past were lit and heated with demonstrations on lighting a fire with flint as well as talks on cooking over an open fire and woodland management.”

No tricks, just treats at Halloween party

THe event in Chichester was organised by charity, the Apuldram Centre and Chichester Priory Rotary Club.

THe party was well attended by local children and parents who enjoyed three hours of scary fun, challenges and fancy dress competition.

THe event celebrates the end of the

summer season of opening at the Florence Park Kiosk by the Apuldram Centre. THe kiosk will now only open on Saturdays until March 28, 2020, when it will reopen for the summer season.

THe cafe in Florence Road, between Bognor Road and the B2144, had been run by Jo Millen for three years before it closed suddenly in August, 2018.

THe kiosk now enables adults with learning disabilities to gain supported work experience within their local community.

THe Apuldram Centre is an

independent registered charity, working to support adults with learning disabilities, and has delivered services in Chichester and the surrounding area for 30 years.

Services include a dedicated day centre offering meaningful and enterprising daytime occupational activities such as horticultural, both on and off site, woodwork, cookery and arts and crafts.

Richard Lowenstein’s terrific documentary, Mystify: Michael Hutchence, looks at the rise and fall of a rock idol whose life was cut tragically short at 37. Former girlfriends including Kylie Minogue and friends contribute to the picture of the man over the music.

Story behind WI calendar is universal

Chichester says 'Vive le cinéma'

IT WAS back in 1998 that Tricia Stewart, Angela Baker and their friends at a Yorkshire branch of the Women’s Institute captured the world’s imagination by staging a seminude calendar to raise funds for their local hospital.

Selling 88,000 copies in the first year alone, they won hearts worldwide and have since raised almost £6m for Bloodwise formerly Leukaemia Research.

Now, as Calendar Girls THe Musical comes to Chichester, the women still marvel that they inspired a hit movie, a sold-out stage show and now, with Gary Barlow and Tim Firth at the musical helm, a critically-acclaimed musical.

“We never dreamed that our story would still be being told,” said Tricia Stewart, who had the idea for the calendar. But Tim Firth, whose musical THis Is My Family was a hit at Chichester Festival THeatre earlier this year, points out: “What was hidden in the story of this calendar was something far greater; its most core constituent is the combating of

grief through comedy and that never goes away.

"THe story applies to many more counties than Yorkshire and many more people than just the WI. It has a far wider canvas than just those coping with an illness. It is universal and that is the whole point of it; the pain of loss being defeated with wit.

“THe musical is the truest portrayal of what we did,” added Tricia. “It has the husbands and the children and it captures very much how we were.

“Cancer touches everyone and so does laughter and loss. It’s a very honest show.

THe cast is brilliant, the songs are incredible and the whole thing is so uplifting. It makes people think that they could go and do something to make a difference too.”

THE 27th edition of the French Film Festival UK will open on November 1, in more than 35 towns and cities across the UK including the Chichester Cinema at New Park.

THe festival screens the crème de la crème of Frenchlanguage cinema from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec, Africa and elsewhere in a spirit of friendship and collaboration with colleagues and film-makers across Europe and beyond.

Some of the year’s hottest titles from such major festivals as Cannes will be on offer including Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Nicolas Bedos’ La belle époque from Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight.

And big names of le cinéma français will appear onscreen in the UK, including Catherine Deneuve, Daniel Auteuil, Jean Dujardin, and Fabrice Luchini.

Victorian-style Steampunk arrives at Amberley

AMBERLEY Museum and Heritage Centre is adding a new event to its calendar this weekend by hosting two days of Steampunk entertainment and vintage-style stalls around the site.

STEAM punk has nothing to do with the 1970s movement linked to Johnny Rotten but is a genre of design, fashion and activities as homage to the largely Victorian industrial past and science fiction of the day. So steam-powered machinery is represented, and weird anachronistic inventions on display.

AT its heart are Steampunkers’ glorious creative costumes encompassing the refined lady to burlesque, industrial businessmen to the Victorian militia and everything in between.

AS well as the museum's usual range of exhibitions and vintage transport, through the weekend several acts will be performing

including Ichabod Steam and his Animatronic Backing Band, Greg Chapman and his Tricycle, Doctor Gray and his Orchestra of One, Sherriff Ants Trepaneur, Lady Violet Hugh, Kiss Like Ether. Ichabod Steam’s performance ‘Submarine’ will be on site.

A Steampunk market will feature specialist traders to indulge vintage shoppers. THe Limeburners Restaurant will be open each day to 4.30 pm, serving snacks and meals.

ON Saturday evening there will be musical entertainment Steampunk style and the bar will be open plus pizza available to keep the atmosphere going on into the night.

THE museum, at New Barn Road, Amberley, Arundel BN18 9LT, will be open 10am4.30pm with usual drop-in entry prices, while the evening function, which must be pre-booked is £15 for adults and £8 for children.

Singers celebrate popular English choral works One of the South's leading amateur choirs, the Chichester Singers, will be performing two well-known English choral works of the 20th century in their next concert.

THe programme, at Chichester Cathedral, opens with Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time, which he started writing the day after World War II was declared. It was written as an expression of what he said was “man’s inhumanity to man”.

As usual, the choir will be conducted by Jonathan

Willcocks and accompanied by the Southern Pro Musica who will perform Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations.

As one of the greatest orchestral pieces of the 19th century, it secured Elgar’s reputation as a composer of international standing. It is also one of the most popular works for lovers of English music with its varied sections reflecting the composer's friends and family.

Based on a Walt Whitman poem, Toward the Unknown Region, the final work is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ first major choral piece, but it already reveals in full measure a mastery of choral technique and structure – moving from dark mystery at the opening to a blaze of celebratory triumph at its conclusion.

By Cllr Richard Plowman THE ROLE of the mayor is diverse. All events I attend are by invitation and there is a large number of Chichester City Council meetings at which I act as chairman.

I was recently called out very early one Monday to start the publicity for the Christmas Festivities and found myself being photographed leaning on a stunning Rolls-Royce. THe city centre is going through a tough time at present, as are all high streets in the UK. We therefore need to support our local shops, particularly the independents, of which there are still many in Chichester. A good Christmas can make all the difference to their future success and survival. I am sure Chichester will look at its very festive best. So go offline, hit the shops and enjoy yourself doing that Christmas shopping.

By contrast, I also chaired the Homelessness Forum, which brings together the charities, churches and local government agencies to discuss how they can work better together. We are fortunate to have terrific charities such as Stonepillow and Four Streets alongside churches like St Pancras. THe district council is also active in looking at the needs of the homeless. I was really impressed by the dedication of all involved. THey are doing their best.

Unfortunately, rough sleepers are on the increase throughout the country and Chichester is no exception: in the last six months the number has risen to about 35, most of them in the city itself.

THe reasons are, of course, complex: the loss of a home through marriage breakdown, or the loss of a job, or health problems, or a combination of all three. Mental health problems are prominent, as is the difference between benefits and the cost of renting accommodation.

Once on the street, this is a very vulnerable group. Stonepillow do a great job getting back on their feet those who wish to be helped, but many want to be outside the system while still in need of assistance just to survive. THis is given by the charities and churches, but at a time of greatest need West Sussex County Council has reduced its grants to Stonepillow and resources are hard to find.

During those periods when the rough sleepers congregate for food and basics, there is a role for the police in reassuring the public with a presence. Any group of individuals in numbers can be intimidating.

THe winter and Christmas is the worst of times for rough sleepers, but we are advised not to give money as it encourages begging gangs. Give it instead to the appropriate charities.

Finally, I would like to thank the three wonderful young people who helped me in the Westgate Centre car park to pick up the trail of pennies from a leaking bag after I had emptied the Rotary collection vortex machine.

Rotary will be out at Christmas beside their Tree of Goodwill collecting for local good causes. Don’t be too alarmed if Father Christmas resembles the chap in the picture above. Ho! Ho! Ho!

THIS AUTUMN Cadbury Dairy Milk is supporting Age UK shops, including the store in Crane Street in Chichester to tackle loneliness amongst older people.

With new research revealing that over 225,000 older people often go a week without speaking to anyone, Cadbury Dairy Milk has removed the words from its iconic bars and ‘donated’ them to the charity, with 30p from each sale going towards Age UK to help fund services to alleviate loneliness amongst older people.

Calling on the people of Chichester to get involved, the Age UK shop is asking residents to donate their words to tackle loneliness in the community.

Visitors to the shop will be able to donate their words by writing a message pledging the ways in which they plan to do something for older people near them.

THis could be checking in on an older neighbour, calling an older relative, speaking to an older person whilst out and about or volunteering. Messages will be displayed in the shop window.

As well as calling on people to ‘donate their words’, the shop is also asking the public to donate their unwanted items. THe money raised by Age UK shops helps to fund the charity’s work, including its free advice line (open 365 days a year) and support for Age UK’s network of local partners, ensuring the charity can continue to be there for older people when they need support the most.

Kathy Manouch, shop manager said: "Loneliness is a huge problem which can make older people feel invisible and forgotten.

THat’s why we are asking the people of Chichester to join Age UK and Cadbury Dairy Milk and make a pledge to do their bit to help tackle loneliness amongst local older people.

"We also urge people to help us raise much-needed funds by donating their unwanted items to the shop. By donating you will be helping Age UK raise much needed funds to provide companionship, advice and support for older people across the country. Please visit the shop to make your pledge soon."

A CHICHESTER care home enabled a 96-year-old resident to spend her birthday with a presenter from her favourite TV show.

Bunny Storrar, who lives at Colten Care’s Wellington Grange, is a huge fan of BBC Two’s THe Repair Shop which invites expert craftspeople to restore viewers’ precious family heirlooms.

When staff at the home asked her for a birthday wish, Bunny said she would either like to go to the barn at the Weald and Downland Living Museum, in Singleton, where the programme is filmed, or have someone from the show visit her.

THe companionship team at the Broyle Road home got in touch with THe Repair Shop and the upshot was a special surprise visit to Bunny by presenter and gramophone specialist Tim Weeks.

Tim brought along a restored gramophone and the pair spent a happy afternoon chatting and playing old vinyl records.

"I am so very pleased," said Bunny. "I never thought I’d qualify for something like this."

Emily Hudson, senior companionship team leader, said: "Bunny had a brilliant 96th birthday.

"She never misses an episode of THe Repair Shop and so to have Tim actually come and see her was just marvellous. He was more than happy to meet her and play her some records.

"She had a great time asking lots of questions about the programme. For example she wanted to know if the moments showing people crying after seeing their restored items were genuine, and she asked how many people apply to be on the show.

"We strongly believe that living in a care home shouldn’t be a barrier to enjoying the things you love. Bunny’s visit from her favourite TV show is a prime example of us making a resident’s wish come true."

As well as gramophones, items restored by expert craftspeople on THe Repair Shop have included clocks, typewriters, pinball machines, clothes, furniture, ceramics and musical instruments.

Dear Editor If water authorities (Southern Water?) are unable to cope with current amounts of sewage, how will they cope with effluent from the swathes of new-build homes which are about to wreck the area.

It's not just sewage, it's traffic, pollution, an impossible burden on already woefully inadequate health, social care and education, etc.

Dear Editor Many thanks for your interest and support in our Waspi campaign.

As you know there are some 3.8 million 1950’s born women in the UK affected by pensions legislation passed by cross party governments in 1995 and 2011. I was born in September 1953 and my old age pension date was delayed twice as a result.

THe current position is disappointing and progress of our campaign has been disadvantaged by the Back to 60 group. THere are similarities between our groups but Waspi do not want the pension age to revert to 60. We are happy with equality but want compensation from the government for around £48,000 each we are owed in lost pension payments.

THere has been little advancement both with our complaints of maladministration against DWP and the escalation to PHSO. THey are unable to consider any case whilst there is a judicial review in progress. An application for an appeal against the recent review verdict has been submitted.

So for Waspi a this means a delay of 12 months or more with local 50’s women still suffering poverty and distress . Ill health ,caring responsibilities and difficulty finding work in their 60’s means that some women rely on their partners or families for support.

Raising awareness amongst MPs to pressure government to recompense 1950’s women is a priority.

Chichester MP Gillian Keegan has been slow to show her support.

Other MPs have recently come together in an effort to raise interest in Parliament. Sadly Brexit dominates everything at present meanwhile we continue to suffer this injustice.

WE ALL need strong muscles whatever age, size or shape we are. Our muscles help keep our posture good and bones supported, so it’s in our advantage to make sure we are doing all the right things to maintain a strong frame.

More and more athletes are living proof that plant-based diets are kicking some serious butt when it comes to being in the best physical shape and greatest performances of their lives.

Whether you are an athlete or not, basically the number one daily achievement for our bodies is to provide it with enough nutrients to keep it balanced, strong and energised.

As many plant-based athletes and bodybuilders are successfully showing that everything the body needs is supplied by a whole food plant-based diet without any animal products, but also that there is not only a competitive advantage by eating this way, but faster and better recovery too.

Although this is a foreign concept to many, especially in the fitness industry, it is not a new concept by any means.

THere is even literature going back to the times of the ancient gladiators relying on plant-based diets for optimum strength and performance. After all, the biggest and strongest animals on Earth are all herbivores who have no problems getting enough protein or building the right strength and muscle mass. THis is the power and potential of plants that has been overlooked by our animal food society!

But things are changing, and fast!

Some because of their knowledge of the environmental impact from eating animal products and some because

of the health implications that eating meat has had on them. Basically, plants provide the cleanest and highest quality of protein (and other nutrients) for our human needs. Our job is just to eat enough of them!

So, what are the top five foods to get you started?

1. Potatoes – sweet or white - It’s important to keep caloric needs in mind when eating for muscle growth and recovery. THey’re rich in carbohydrates, which provide a necessary energy source.

2. Legumes – THese are an excellent source of iron and protein. Try to consume them after your workout to replenish your carbohydrate stores and provide a source of protein to promote muscle growth. THeir high fibre content aids in nutrient absorption, as fibre is linked to maintaining healthy gut bacteria, which promotes the best digestion.

THis maximizes the nutritional value of the foods you eat. THere’s also a huge family of beans and lentils to choose from. You could try a red lentil soup with sprouted bread, or a bean burrito with quinoa or brown rice.

Watchmakers of West Street in Midhurst

f Detail of clock signed Samuel Jemmett | Pic: Geoff Allnutt OVER a period of nearly 300 years there have been watch and clockmakers (known as horologists) working in Midhurst, the small market town within the Chichester district.

At least 35 can be named, mainly working during the 18th and 19th centuries. THe areas of Rumbolds Hill and West Street often had up to three watchmakers working from rooms, shops and workshops at any one period of time.

THe earliest recorded was Samuel Jemmett whose family arrived in Midhurst in 1722.

Of those traced, 11 were in West Street and unusually there is still a traditionally run watch and clockmakers there today. J. E.

Allnutt and Son occupy a premises that has seen a rich history of characters, their personal stories of success and tragedy, all connected by the skill of horology.

At this time clocks and pocket watches were sought after decorative items which also had a practical use, making them fairly important for people to own if they could afford to.

THey needed to be regularly maintained and the skills to do this were valued across the country.

Apprentices took over five years to be seen as competent makers and repairers. THose with the title master watchmaker had reached a certain level of experience and expertise. THey were in a position to pass on their knowledge to others. THe fortunes of horologists varied quite significantly with some owning large houses and mixing with society while others were recorded as “pauper watchmakers”, so it is difficult to generalise about their lifestyles and social standing.

It becomes much easier to trace the occupants of the West Street premises by 1841 due to the introduction of the Census returns every ten years. It shows that by 1851 THe Wrapson family had moved into West Street from a watchmaker’s workshop in Red Lion Street, near the market place.

Charles and Mary Wrapson, seemed to be successful and comfortably off. THey had three sons and one daughter. One of their sons, William, set up as a watch and clockmaker at 28 Rumbolds Hill. THeir two other sons Charles (II) and Alfred stayed living and working with them in West Street.

THeir daughter Mary Ann also lived with them at this time. When Charles senior died in 1856 his widow Mary inherited the business.

Those with the title master watchmaker had reached a certain level of experience and expertise.

They were in a position to pass on their knowledge to others.

Mary was described in the 1861 census and the trade directories as a clock and watchmaker. Her sons were described as watchmakers. It is possible that she may have done all the work on the clocks while her sons specialised in pocket watches.

It is the model that is used at J E Allnutts today due to the different skills required. Mary was certainly a very able and knowledgeable business woman, clearly well respected in the community, as the business seemed to have thrived. When she died, Charles, the second eldest child inherited the business.

Charles ran the business from 1866 and described himself as a master watchmaker.

THe family had been steeped in horology for decades and other branches of the family also ran horological businesses in Chichester and Portsmouth, so Charles probably felt confident in this title and in the quality of his work. By 1871 aged 55 he was unmarried and childless but his sister Mary Ann had returned to lodge with him after a very long absence from her home town. She had been living in Portsmouth where, aged 44, she married George Lawrence, a Coach Painter, originally from Tillington near Petworth, before they came back to Midhurst in 1860.

In 1871 while living with Charles, Mary Ann’s husband George died and the siblings carried on living and possibly working together until 1876 when Charles also died, leaving the business to his sister. Mary Ann Lawrence became the second woman to run the watchmaking business in West Street.

Mary Ann carried on working as a watchmaker right up into her 80s. She employed several journeymen but was very clear in the census returns of 1881 and 1891

that she was the mistress watchmaker, the head of the business and employer. She earnt enough to employ a maid as well. When she finally retired, she sold on a thriving business to the next proprietor, Joseph Ketterer.

Chichester Library is looking for computer buddies to teach people basic computing skills and how to use the internet on a one-to-one basis. Duties include: running training sessions to complete novices to help them get started with computers, including keyboard and mouse skills; and running training sessions to customers who have some experience in ICT, particularly in the areas of email and internet.

FA Cup heroes Chi back home CHICHESTER City are expecting a bumper crowd as the FA Cup history-makers return home for the first time since their second round place was confirmed.

In what has been a couple of weeks to remember for everyone at Oaklands Park, the fact that City are flying high in thei first ever season in step four seems to be overlooked.

THree months into the campaign and Chi are still unbeaten away from home in the Isthmian South East.

THat run was continued last weekend when Chi returned from Hythe Town with a point after a battling 0-0 draw.

City, who are eighth in the standings with games in hand, will be expected to do better tomorrow when a big crowd is expected at Oaklands Park for a league match against Ashford United (3pm).

THat will be followed by a

trip to SCFL Division One side Shoreham in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

As Chi boss Miles Rutherford told THe Non League Paper, “It’s a bubble we don’t want to burst.

"THe biggest thing at the moment is trying to get the players back thinking about the league. It’s a hard thing to do.

"We have to focus on getting some results.�

Coming into the Hythe match Chichester had played more FA Cup games than league ones so far this season.

THe trip to Kent was a third consecutive weekend on the road for the Sussex club whose recent travels had taken them to Bedfordshire to play Barton Rovers in the FA Trophy and Essex to face Bowers & Pitsea in the FA Cup’s last round of qualifying.

broke down en route Rutherford and his coaching team went with the same starting X1 that featured at Bowers.

Following a delayed kick off it was the hosts that created an early chance when James Rogers, Frannie Collin and the impressive Kiernan HughesMason linked up.

Chi soon got into the match though and a timely interception

by Ryan Davidson sent them on a counter attack six minutes in but Godman was down quickly to deny Josh Clack.

Davidson, at the back stick, got something on the resulting corner, although his downwards header bounced out for a goal kick.

Kaleem Haitham went close with two opportunities, one from distance, and then a stretching Lloyd Rowlatt couldn’t quite get to Hutchings’ cross from the left.

And on the stroke of half time Clack almost got on the end of Gicu’s delivery.

Into the second period and in tricky conditions the passing wasn’t always slick.

Gicu had an opportunity to pick out Haitham that he spurned.

THen the home keeper was off his line quickly to claim Gicu’s flick before Clack had a go after good work from the Romanian and Rowlatt.

A super pass from Rowlatt on the hour found an overlapping Hutchings on an overlap who pushed the ball on to Clack but the Chi Number 9’s drive lifted over the bar.

Haitham, the scorer of that fortuitous goal last time out in the FA Cup, stung Will Godman’s gloves in the 67th minute.

Scott Jones, who replaced Gicu, went close with a trademark header before Haitham forced a smart save out of Godman.

Ryan Peake, on for Corey Heath, did well to head clear a Hughes-Mason set-piece with five or so to go.

THere were a couple of other scares for Chi in time added on and the visitors might have even grabbed all three points when Clack drilled an attempt narrowly wide and Jones was crowded out looking for a shot on the turn.

Chichester’s unbeaten record on the road though, in an exceptional start to life in Step 4, continues in to a third month.

Ashford United (H) Tomorrow (Saturday November 2), at 3pm

City's winless run continues CHICHESTER City's search for a first league win of the season continues as the club's stuttering start to the year rolls on.

THe Green and White Army suffered a bitter blow last weekend being defeated 2-1 at bottom side Keynsham Town, who previously had no points in the FA Women's National Southern Premier.

It means Sadie Blakely's side slip to second-bottom, with just one point from their opening eight matches.

With a third of the season gone, there is now a six point gap between City in 11th and MK Dons in ninth with a growing threat of the Oaklands Park side being cut adrift at the bottom of the standings.

Next up for Chi is a return to their home ground with second-place Watford the visitors on Sunday (2pm).

Blakely will need to rally her young side who proved to be second best against a Keynsham side after a 265 mile round trip.

With most of last season's squad departing after a third place finish, the former Portsmouth goalkeeper has had to rebuild the team from the ground up.

younger players and several members of the development squad have stepped up into the first team.

But with an average age of just 23, Chi have struggled to find their feet losing six games before earning a point away from home against Gillingham.

A trip to Somerset was seen as a prime opportunity to kickstart City's season - but they came up short, falling on the wrong side of a three goal thriller.

As it is Blakely must now reinvigorate her side to face a buoyant Hornets side who beat Gillingham Ladies 4-0 last time out.

Lions on the lookout for new boss as Paine walks PAGHAM must move on quickly from manager Bob Paine's departure if they are to pull themselves away from relegation trouble.

THe former EP boss joined the Lions just a few weeks before the start of the season and assembled a young but inexperienced side.

In recent weeks, the team has started to click - although Pagham still sit second bottom of the SCFL Premier.

With Paine departing the club last week for personal issues, officials are stiill no closer to announcing a replacement.

But with no game until Tuesday, when they head to Whitehawk in the Sussex Senior Cup, chairman Tony Shea knows he has time to make a decision on the club's future.

Pagham's poor run continued last weekend when they were defeated 4-1 at thirdplace Horley Town.

But there were more positives in midweek in a 4-3 victory over high-flying Newhaven in the RUR Cup in midweek.

Attacking right from the first whistle they had the first two chances of the game.

Just after 20 minutes they

took the lead when Tom Chalaye nodded in from a corner.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0 as Jack Barnes scored from inside the six-yard box.

THe final act of the first half was yet another Pagham goal, with Joe Clarke brilliantly lobbing the Dockers keeper from distance as he broke down the right.

Into the second half and a fourth goal just had to come.

Jake Heryet supplied it just before the hour mark, turning his marker inside out before blasting the ball home from the edge of the box.

THe game changed with 20 minutes to go as the referee awarded Newhaven a penalty for a foul in the box, with Ebou Jallow crashing in from the spot.

It could have been 5-1 soon after, when Heryet had a goal disallowed for offside.

Newhaven's Ian Robinson then scored twice late one, the second in injury time.

But Pagham played out the last three minutes at the other end of the pitch with some comfort.

THey now have a free weekend before the trip to east Brighton on Tuesday.

Football SELSEY'S bid to end their bleak run of only one win in nine will see them welcome AFC Varndeanians to the Bun Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

THe Blues unlucky streak continued last weekend when they were defeated 5-3 at home to Bexhill.

A Ryan Morey brace and late Callum Dowdell strike were not enough to halt a poor run which goes back to the start of January.

Regardless, Daren Pearce's side will look to get things back on track against a strong Varndeanians side who are currently third in the standings.

THree points are much needed for Selsey who still sit eighth but are eight points behind their opponents.

In SCFL Division Two Bosham's slide down the table continues as the Robins slumped to their sixth defeat on the bounce.

THe Walton Lane side suffered a 4-1 loss at Rustington, a defeat which has seen them fall to 11th.

Bosham have a week off before playing Worthing Town on November 9.

Running A team of six Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners who took on the challenging Beachy Head Marathon last weekend.

THe marathon, which takes in coastal views around Eastbourne, has over 3,000ft of elevation and to add to the challenge the winds were incredibly strong.

But the Tone Zone performed well, clocking up good times in the process.

Christo Oosthuizen finished 18th out of 2,200 runners in a very impressive time of 3 hours 30 minutes to finish second in his age category.

Donna Strowger was second home for the club in a time of 5:30:09 completing her third marathon of the year.

Cheryl Laing broke the 6 hour barrier to finish in 5 hours 54 minutes.

Vicky Cooper ran with her good friend Zoe Hemes who was running her second marathon of the year, both crossing the line together in 6:37.

Michelle Maxim battled the winds and rain for the last 3 miles to finish in 7 hours 34 minutes.

Also taking part in the same day was Sam Yates, who ran the 10k and finished in 1 hour 8 minutes.

Mason aims for national success BOGNOR'S teen boxer Charley Mason will be aiming for national success when he goes toe-to-toe with some of the best fighters in the country in the next month.

THe 18-year-old elite light welterweight has made great strides under the tutelage of the coaches at the Bognor Regis Amateur Boxing Club, which works from the VK Gym in Durban Road.

Fresh from reaching the semi final of an international competition in Ireland, the teenager will now be taking his talents onto the national stage.

Charley will be boxing throughout November in a national tournament where he is hoping to make his mark as usual.

Winning the tournament overall would make Charley a champion of England, Wales and Scotland.

Coach Paul Mason said: "Good luck Charley, you certainly have it in you to go all the way."

Mason warmed up for the fight by travelling to Hastings to compete in an Open Show which was hosted by the West Hill Boxing Club.

He faced a tough opponent from London's Finchley boxing club.

Finchley is renowned as one of the best and most successful boxing clubs in Great Britain, having produced several world champions throughout its long history.

Boxers including Dereck Chisora and Anthony Joshua evolved from this club, with the production line showing no signs of slowing in recent years.

Charley's opponent was Jamie Bradley.

But despite his opponent's strong reputation, Charley boxed with dominance and skill controlling the bout throughout.

His taller opponent tried to keep the contest at long range. Charley however was having none of it.

As coach Paul Mason explains: "Leading off first and closing distance he landed the cleaner more telling shots, using combinations to negate Jamie's work."

After a number of close rounds, Charley was declared the winner on points.

Bognor ABC has been established for more than 100 years and is the oldest club in Sussex.

Back-to-back wins the target for Blues

All go for 2020 at Goodwood IT may be autumn but thoughts are already turning to the summer as dates for next season's Goodwood have been announced.

From history-making trebles by course legends Stradivarius and Battash to world-class DJs, there was not a dull moment at the South Downs course this season.

Course officials have now confirmed the 2020 dates for all 20 race meetings for next season.

THe highlight will once again be Glorious Goodwood, which will take place from Tuesday July 28 to Saturday August 1.

THings will kick off on May 2 with the opening fixture of the year.

THat will be followed by the traditional three-day May Festival from May 28 to 30, which has been associated with a feast of food and drink.

July will be dominated by the THree Friday Night events, which combine horse racing with international DJ sets.

THese will take place on June 5, 12, and 19, with the popular family race day on June 7.

After the festival, August Bank Holiday will feature three meetings from August 28 to 30.

THe season will then feature two autumn dates on September 8 and September 23 before rounding off on Sunday October 11.

Racing fans looking for a more immediate fix can turn their attention to Fontwell.

THe famous figure of eight course hosts a winter afternoon of racing on Friday (November 8).

During this fixture the course will be operating in one enclosure - meaning the perks of Premier Admission can be enjoyed with a Paddock ticket.

THe six race card begins at 1.25pm.

THen all eyes will be on the Southern National on November 17.

One of its biggest race days of the year, the 3-mile, 3-furlong test of endurance is the ultimate ride for both horse and jockey.

THe race is aired on ITV racing and tickets for the event are selling fast.

CHICHESTER RFC are going all out to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season - and will be hoping to be inspired by England's world cup heroes.

Blues are currently seventh in London One South after winning four and losing four of their opening eight games of the season.

But with a third of the campaign gone Director of Rugby Paul Colley will be looking for more consistency from his side.

After beating Cobham 23-20 in a hardfought contest last time out, Blues now head north to Medway tomorrow (3pm).

With their opponents sitting fourth, Chi know they will be in for a tough match.

But they will hope to draw inspiration from England, whose match against South Africa in the World Cup Final will be shown at Oaklands Park before the team head north to the Kent estuary.

THey will hope for a similar start to last week when they began well against Cobham.

Two tries in the first half in extremely wet and windy weather gave them a good 17-3 lead heading into the break Conditions were so bad the home team needed to change kits mid-game.

Chi kept their stranghold on the game though and two further penalties were enough to seal a four point victory, which lifted them above their opponents in the standings.

THe game was extra special for Harry Seaman, who made his 100th appearance for the 1st XV. Having come up through the mini and juniors he made his first team debut against Dover in September 2012.

THis season he is proving to be a utility player with appearances at scrum half, centre, winger, full back and flanker.

In Hampshire Premier, Bognor will be looking to make it three wins from win when they welcome Farnborough to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow.

THe Purple and Greens won a narrow contest away at Alresford last time out, edging out the home side 7-6.

THat victory lifted Bognor to seventh in the standings, with bottom side Farnborough next up for a side who are starting to find their stride.

THe club will be opening its doors at 7.30am on Saturday for breakfast for the World Cup Final with all welcome.

Blake believes Bognor can keep on going

ROCKS coach Robbie Blake is backing his charges to keep going after the club made it four away wins in a row.

Bognor Regis Town look to have overcome their disappointing start to the season in recent weeks, hitting their stride on the road.

Wins at Isthmian Premier leaders Folkestone Invicta and Kingstonian a fortnight ago were followed up by a 3-1 victory at Isthmian South Central side Uxbridge in the FA Trophy.

THen came a 2-1 win at Bowers & Pitsea in the league in midweek, a success which lifted Rocks up to tenth in the standings.

Blake will be hoping his side keep up that momentum when they host Enfield Town in the league tomorrow (3pm).

THat is followed by a trip to SCFL Division One side Storrington in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday, a trophy that Rocks lifted last season (7.15pm).

Speaking after the win in Essex, Blake said: "I can't speak highly enough of the lads. I've had 12 players and they have put in a massive shift in and its massive credit to them that we've managed to win these games.

"Hopefully we can get a couple back and get a couple of bodies in and then make a real push for it "I firmly believe in the players

we have and with a couple of additions we won't be too far away."

THe win in Essex was sealed after a tense second half in which the Rocks were holding on to a first half strike from Dan Smith.

After Bowers & Pitsea equalised, it looked like the home side would get the winner.

But Rocks rallied and Tommy Leigh poked home after a Smith shot hit the bar.

Blake said: "We didn't show the composure in the second half and I think they were unlucky to lose "THe second goals was the only good bit of play when we did go wide to Ashton [Leigh] and Dan unlucky to hit the cross bar and Tommy there to finish."

THere was a similar feel to proceedings last Saturday too when Rocks overcame a spirited Uxbridge side in the FA Trophy thanks to goals from James Crane and a brace from Doug Tuck.

THat win has set up a home tie against East THurrock United next Saturday (November 8, 3pm).

THe club were shocked in midweek to hear of the passing of Doug Glossop, a club stalwart and popular matchday steward who manned the gate at Nyewood Lane for many years.

Details of a fitting tribute are expected to be announced soon.

Smith central to Rocks hopes

HE may only be 20 years old. But it looks like Rocks promotion hopes will have much to do with the striking talents of Dan Smith.

With the departure of Jimmy Muitt to Dorking and Bradley Lethbridge not available for every match, the former Portsmouth striker is the main man when it comes to Bognor's frontline.

A sweetly-struck right footed shot from outside the area against Bowers & Pitsea was Smith's ninth goal of the season.

But coach Robbie Blake believes there's still plenty that the young player he fondly calls Smudger can bring to the table.

Blake, who knows a thing or two about scoring goals from his time with Bradford and Bolton, said: "It was a great finish. We know he's got that in the bag and he shows great composure.

"THere was one before then when played Tommy Scutt back in when it was on his left foot.

"He is capable of doing it with his left so I said to him strike it."

With just three months of the season gone, Smith is close to matching last season's tally of 13 goals in the Isthmian Premier.

But Blake was clear that the club's recent run of form, which has seen six wins in seven matches in all competitions, has been a team effort - particularly when you consider the first team is down to 12 fit players.

THe coach believed that has pulled the squad closer together as they look to

compete against the odds.

But with another double header coming in the next week- the Rocks third in a row - Blake knows that his young squad needs reinforcements if it is to keep up a run of good form.

THe former Portsmouth coach said: "Everyone has been colossal over the last

few weeks.

"Everyone has knuckled in, the staff, players, supporters and there's a bit more harmony in the football club and we are starting to get the feeling of heading in the right direction.

"If we bring a couple more in we will be so much better for it."

Well that's four wins from four on the road in the last two weeks.

Somehow we are getting wins - I just don't know how.

At Uxbridge we didn't play very well at all.

THere were difficult conditions and one of those games were the only thing that matters was the win.

I think it's fair to say that against better opposition we would have to play better to win the match It wasn't easy on the eye but somehow we ground out the result.

Doug got a couple which was great to see. With Jimmy Muitt now gone everyone will need to chip in and get a couple as the season goes on.

I'm happy for Doug as he has had a difficult start to season but in the last few weeks he's really stepped it up and probably been our best player.

Muitt leaving was a bit of a shock to everyone I think.

I found out literally on the day, which was just before our match with Kingstonian.

I knew there was interest at the start of the year but thought that had all passed.

Dorking obviously wanted him and offered him a good deal.

We had a chat about it in the dressing room and, while the timing was not ideal, we won the game.

I think it may have inspired us all to give an extra 10 per cent which contributed to getting the three points.

Personally I wish him all the best, I speak to him a lot and think he will do well.

Our next match was at Bowers & Pitsea - again I don't know how we won.

THey hit the post a couple of times, they had better chances but we managed to eke out the result.

Since Jimmy left we basically have had a 12 man squad playing Saturday and Tuesday

Not getting home until after midnight then getting up at 5am for work is really hard.

If you compare that to other squads, like say Kingstonian who had a full squad and eight players not playing, it's tough.

We are literally down to the bare bones so we need a couple more bodies to come in, people who have been there and played at a good level who can keep us going.

Enfield, who we have next, are usually a good side who are up and around the playoffs.

It will be nice to get back to the Lane with a home match, forgotten what it looks like!

THere will be some sad thoughts though with the passing of Doug, who was at the bottom of the lane. .

He was there ever since I have been there and, while he's not been there a while, it's strange to think he won't be there again.

People like him are what the club is about, people giving their time and energy and he will be missed.

THen we have the first Sussex Senior Cup match at Storrington, a tournament we won last season.

We will be taking it one game at a time and see what happens.

We need to get a couple more players in and all the time we are struggling the next match is the focus.

With smaller squads though the odds do build against us and that does build squad spirit.

Joe Dandy and Ashton Leigh have come back in and done brilliant.

I can't speak highly enough about the impact of Joe Cook at centre half and Amadou in goal.

It's nice to have someone shouting at me at the back too.

He's been there and done that and is a commanding presence which shows on the pitch.
