School's future in balance By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHURCH of England infant schools could become extinct in the city if Rumboldswhyke School closes next year. West Sussex County Council officers came under fire last Thursday evening at a meeting held at the school with residents, teachers and parents. Rumboldswhyke CE Infants’ School,
in Rombolds Close, Chichester, was inspected earlier this year and received an inadequate rating for overall effectiveness. The meeting was told by Mr Paul Wagstaff, director of education and skills at the county council, the school had just two options, either to convert to an academy or close. Parents complained about lack of support from the council. Mr Wagstaff responded: "A lot of work and additional
funding has gone into improving the school but it didn't achieve the desired result. "We were not convinced that the school was making the progress based on the amount of support that had been going in. "It was at that point a formal notice was given. The future options are taken out of our control." County councillor Jamie Fitzjohn said: "I really cannot believe that this is the
way that we are going when a school is deemed inadequate on a one day visit. “The county council's children services received an Ofsted visit. It was deemed as inadequate. Children services has not closed. We have challenged it. However, children services is still within West Sussex. “We had an inspection of the Fire and Rescue Service. They deemed three areas as failing, one of them was inadequate. Turn to page three
