Council could close school

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PROPOSALS to close an infant school in Chichester will be considered by cabinet members at West Sussex County Council in a fortnight.

Despite appeals and petitions by parents to keep Rumboldswhyke CE Infants’ School open, councillors will be asked to support proposals to shut the school in Rumbolds Close at a meeting

on January 14.

A petition to save Rumboldswhyke school, organised by parent Cristina Vitan, collected around 1,363 signatures and was presented to Cllr Ashvin Patel, vice-chairman of West Sussex County Council in November.

A county council spokesman said: "Our key objective is for primary schools to be a sufficient size to be viable in the future, offer a high quality and broad curriculum, attract pupils from the

local community and provide strong outcomes for children, as detailed in our school effectiveness strategy.

"We identified five schools potentially at risk under these criteria. Following feedback from a public consultation and our own impact assessments, recommendations for each of the five schools have been developed.

"We appreciate any potential change to a school is unsettling. However, we have a responsibility to ensure all schools

provide a high quality and sustainable education to children across West Sussex."

In June this year, the Chichester Post broke the news that Rumboldswhyke school received an inadequate rating from Ofsted for overall effectiveness.

In the summary of key findings in the report it said that there had been considerable turbulence within the school in recent years.

EIGHTEEN new electric vehicle charging points have been installed in the Chichester district to encourage more people to use electric vehicles and to support existing drivers of the vehicles.

Having successfully bid for a £58,000 government grant from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, Chichester District Council has purchased and installed new charging points in eight of the council’s car parks across the district.

THe charging points are now installed and ready for use in: • Bosham Lane car park, Bosham • Northern Crescent car park, East Wittering • North Street car park, Midhurst • East Pallant car park, Chichester • Northgate car park, Chichester • Avenue de Chartres car park, Chichester • Pound Street car park, Petworth • East Street car park, Selsey.

Users can pay for the service and electricity, either through the InCharge app, or by paying with a card or tag from the service provider.

“As a council we are committed to improving air quality and making steps to tackle climate change. THis project is one of many ways we are trying to make a difference,” says Cllr Penny Plant, the cabinet member for the environment and Chichester contract services at Chichester District Council.

“If we want more people to use electric vehicles, we have to make it easier for them to charge their cars.

We’ve thought carefully about where to locate the chargers and identified key locations where visitors will be encouraged to stop and explore, while their car charges, so that they spend time and money in the district.

Man arrested after recall to prison POLICE have arrested a man who was wanted for recall to prison.

Before his sentence, imposed in April 2017, Tristram Dean Francis, 36, pictured right, was living at an address in Selsey and he has family and associates in the Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton areas.

Officers had issued a news and social media appeal on Monday (December 30) for the whereabouts of Francis, who was released from prison on licence in February 2019 part way through a 39-month sentence for burglary, and was wanted on behalf of the Probation Service for breaching conditions of his release licence.

Francis was arrested on New Years Eve morning (Tuesday, December 31) at an address in Bognor Regis,

as a result of information received following the media appeal.

He is now being returned to prison.

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SURFER from the district has returned from the 2019 ISA Worlds in Surf City on El Sunzal Beach in EL Salvador.

James Arnell-Smith, 21, was part of a ‘Team England’ after qualifying in second place overall at the British Stand Up Paddleboard Association (BSUPA) stand up paddleboarding (SUP) Surf Nationals.

James, from West Wittering, has been surfing and windsurfing since he was five and he started out with the 2XS kids programme on the beach in his

hometown.

He is also talented at windsurfing and came second overall in British Wavesailing Association (BWA) Cornwall Classic windsurfing in Gwithians British Wavesailing Association (BWA) Wave Classic in September.

James - who took the 10,000-mile round trip to Surf City El Salavador with his dad Steve – competed against some of the world's best sup surfers. He battled through heats and finished with a International Surfing Association (ISA) world ranking of 25th (and top Brit) in his division. He has said he came back all fired up to do more events and return

to International competitions for this year Simon Bassett, from 2XS, said: "James has really put the time in on the water since he was a small kid, in windsurfing, surfing and SUP. "He has great support from his parents but he has been very determined to become one of the best riders in UK." THe ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship took place in El Salvador for the first time in the event’s eight-year history.

Free school students complete fire training - See page five

It was claimed this had led to a further decline in the school’s performance since the previous inspection.

Mr Paul Wagstaff, the director of education and skills at the county council, told parents at a public meeting in November that the school had just two options, either to convert to an academy or close.

During the meeting, parents told Mr Wagstaff that they believed the only option the council was considering was closure.

Parents have also claimed the consultation into its future was a sham, saying documents showed an education officer had written in June, before the consultation had begun, ‘we are aiming to close the school by the end of the academic year 2019/20’.

Cabinet members will also be asked to support federation proposals for Compton and Up Marden Primary School. A federation is where a number of maintained schools come together under one governing body.

As part of its school effectiveness strategy, which was adopted in 2018, the council deemed five schools (including Rumboldswhyke and Compton and Up Marden) to be at risk because of problems such as falling numbers and financial viability.

A consultation was held in October and November and a task & finish group was set up to look into the entire process in detail.

THe council was heavily criticised by school governors after it held the first of those meetings behind close doors.

THe second meeting, in October, was held in public.

District and city councillor, Sarah Sharp said: "I am concerned that decisions are being taken in a system that is clearly failing us.

"An organisation that 'is seen to be in a perpetual state of leadership crisis' according to John Couglan, who wrote the report (about the county's children's services), doesn't inspire me with confidence.

"Looking at the large number of houses due to be built in the east of the city (Shopwyke 500, Westhampnett 500, land south of Oving Road, 143, Tangmere 1,300, Bognor Road 73) it doesn't seem sensible to close this school.

"THat makes a total of 2,516 dwellings. Smaller, local schools that build strong communities are better to cope with our climate crisis."

If the cabinet approves the proposals, the public will have six weeks to have their say – a process expected to start on February 3 – before a final decision is made in May or June by Cllr Nigel Jupp, cabinet member for education and skills.

THe decisions will take effect on August 31.

THe proposals will first be discussed at a meeting of the children and young people’s services scrutiny committee on January 9, before going to cabinet with its recommendation.

Both meetings will be held at County Hall, Chichester, and both will be webcast.

April RESIDENTS and businesses in the Chichester area were thanked for their patience following a fire at the household waste recycling site.

THe large fire involving more than 500 tonnes of household waste broke out at the recycling site and waste transfer station in Westhampnett.

January STUDENTS at the city's university were left star struck when Maisie Williams, who is best known for playing Arya Stark in the hit HBO television series Game of THrones, visited Chichester University as part of a tour she was doing.

June RUMBOLDSWHYKE C of E Infants’ School, in Rombolds Close, was inspected by Ofsted and received an inadequate rating for overall effectiveness.

THe school was told it would face closure or be turned into an academy.

February CHICHESTER councillors were shown a presentation for a parking scheme which the council planned to test on Chichester.

THe ideas included making roads in the city and district restricted for parking.

March A POPULAR charity shop for St Wilfrid's in the city centre reopened its doors after being closed for a few weeks for refurbishment.

Staff, volunteers and guests enjoyed a glass of bubbly to toast the opening.

May POST Newspapers celebrated three years in publication - a total of 157 issues.

Editor-in-chief , Adam Cunard said he was hugely proud of the success of the newspaper and extremely pleased to celebrating the third anniversary.

` Public toilet award

THOUSANDS of visitors travelled to Goodwood for the annual Festival of Speed event.

THe all-electric Volkswagen ID. R set the fastest ever time up the Goodwood hill climb course in 00:41:18 seconds on the Saturday.

A special feature was held, celebrating the life of Michael Schumacher – the most successful driver in Formula 1 history.

THE CITY erupted into celebrations after Chichester City FC made it through to the second round of the FA Cup. Bury FC was kicked out of the English Football League after they fell into administration so there was an odd number of teams left in the draw.

THe last three clubs in the draw were Chichester, Stevenage and Peterborough but it was Chichester who received a bye and were automatically put through to the next round.

CHICHESTER District Council is flushed with success after it joined the ‘Premier League’ of public toilets with an array of awards at the Loo of the Year Awards 2019.

Inspectors rated the public toilets in North Street Car Park, Midhurst, and Northgate Car Park, Chichester, as Platinum – while public toilets at Hillfield Road, Selsey, and Pound Street Car Park, Petworth, were both rated Gold. THe results place the council in the Premier League of the top 20 local authority public toilet providers.

THe Northgate Car Park public toilets received a national Space to Change award and a trophy for providing the best facilities in this category. THe Space to Change award recognises public conveniences which provide specialist equipment for disabled people and their carers.

All four public toilets also received certificates for Washroom Cleaner of the Year Award for providing a high level of commitment to a vital public service.

"We are delighted that our public toilets have been recognised in this way," says Cllr Martyn Bell, the cabinet member for growth, place and regeneration at Chichester District Council.

"THese awards reflect the hard work and dedication of our cleansing team at the depot, who ensure that these sites are maintained to a high standard, and our contractors at Wettons.

"THe feedback we received from the inspection report will be very useful in helping us to continue to update and improve our facilities."

A BREATHTAKING statue was unveiled in the city on Remembrance Sunday as part of a special service.

THe statue of Maurice Patten, created by Vincent Gray, was unveiled in front of the entire service and 48 members of his family.

A HUGE crowd gathered at Tangmere Airfield to remember seven men who tragically lost their lives in 1943 when their Halifax bomber crashed into a hangar.

A special event was held to unveil a memorial which was erected at the site of the crash.

A WEST Sussex county councillor is working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep traffic flowing in Chichester with new plans for an online petition.

Cllr Jamie Fitzjohn set up a petition to move the pedestrian crossing at Market Avenue and St Pancras back to its original place.

GILLIAN Keegan got into the festive spirit after the announcement was made that she won the Chichester seat in the general election.

THe Tory candidate said she rose above the personal attacks during her election campaign and held her seat in the city with a majority of 57.8 per cent of the votes totalling 35,402.

f Valerie Graves's murder was unsolved for over five years

Justice was served after five years in November for the murder of Valerie A ROMANIAN man was given a life sentence after pleading guilty to the murder of Valerie Graves.

Cristian Sabou, 28, was given up by his wife after he confessed he had killed Valerie during a break-in.

Adina Marian, Cristian’s wife, provided forensic swabs of their children to police, linking him to the DNA found at the scene.

THe murder took place in Bosham, in December, 2013, and has finally been solved following one of the largest and most complex

investigations carried out by Sussex Police in recent years.

Valerie Graves, a 55-year-old mother and grandmother, had moved from Scotland to Bracklesham Bay to live with and care for her elderly mother.

Over Christmas, Valerie, her mother, her sister and sister’s partner, were house-sitting for friends at a home in Smuggler’s Lane, Bosham.

At 10pm on Sunday, December 29, Valerie said she was going to bed. THis was the last time that she was seen alive.

Dear Editor A headline in the Post on December 20, labels Chichester as a 'true blue city'. THis is misleading.

Anyone who has attended a count, whether for a general or local authority election, will have noticed that the city itself does not inevitably vote Conservative, certainly not by a large margin.

It is only when the votes come in from the rural areas that the big majority mounts up. THe results of the city council elections in May 2019 with its rainbow mix of yellow, red and green and only two blue councillors are evidence of this.

So also is the evidence from the make-up of the nine district councillors for the city wards with only two Conservatives surviving the 2019 election.

THe citizens of Chichester are a more diverse bunch than the solid blue bloc of popular imagination.

Dear Editor I am currently carrying out some research into holiday camps in the West Sussex area and would be grateful to any reader who can help me with information, including photographs, of one particular holiday camp in the Chichester area.

THe camp in question was named Lazalea Holiday Camp, and existed on Broad Road, Nutbourne, in the parish of Hambrook. As far as I can tell, it was popular for school children's holidays in the 1950s and early 1960s.

One 1931 Ordnance Survey map shows the site as Nutbourne Holiday Camp, so it would seem that it existed before the Second World War? If anyone is able to help I can be contacted by email on: mike. haworth46@outlook.com - all mail will be acknowledged.

Letters of kindness to care home residents

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS at a care home in the city are now part of a global initiative to combat loneliness and isolation.

Marriot House and Lodge can share and make new memories with people from all over the globe via postcards.

In some cases, the origin of the postcards are a place where residents have visited in the past, or have family based there.

'Postcards of Kindness' was started on Facebook, and the care home has joined this initiative to give residents their own postcard pen pals.

"We would really like individuals

to send us a postcard from your day trip, short break or holiday to brighten someone else's day and to revive the tradition of sending postcards," said Sarah Harding, admin assistant at the home in Tollhouse Close.

"Receiving post is a great way to spread a little cheer and to remind the care home residents that they are a part of the worldwide community. Social inclusion with the wider community is a vital aspect of the care we provide."

Social isolation and exclusion from the local and worldwide society can result in a negative effect on both the quality of life of the person and even on whole families or communities.

Loneliness can be both a cause and a result of social exclusion. One can lead

to the other and can result in a cycle of depression and withdrawal.

Staff have been making a collage of all the postcards they receive and say that residents look forward to receiving new postcards. Kevin, a resident at the home said: "I love reading the post cards we get and we have also received pen pal letters that we reply to. It's one of my favourite activities."

Sarah added: "THis initiative has had such a positive effect on the residents of Marriott House and Lodge, making them part of such a wider community.

A GROUP of ten secondary school pupils, including children from Chichester Free School, have successfully completed West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s FireBreak programme.

THe pupils demonstrated their new skills as part of their pass-out parade in front of family and friends at Bognor Regis Fire Station.

THe group was made up of pupils from Chichester Free School, Felpham Community College, THe Regis School, Littlegreen, Cornfield School and St Philip Howard.

THeir pass-out parade came following a week of intense training, which gave them an insight into life as a firefighter as well as a variety of valuable life skills.

Among the skills the pupils learned were hose running, climbing ladders and getting to grips with wearing breathing apparatus. THey have also learned about fire safety, CPR and have gained a HeartStart first-aid training qualification.

THe Big Give’s record-breaking campaign, which ran from December 3–10, generated over £15 million in vital funding for good causes across the country, matching donations pound for pound until the funding pot was empty.

"FireBreak is a challenging course, but these students have really worked hard together to complete it with flying colours. I hope they will use this course as a springboard on to bigger and better things in later life.”

FireBreak is a programme run by the service's targeted education team. It is aimed at secondary school students, encouraging them to become positive role models and learn skills they can use to help towards maintaining a safe community.

` Charity carolling CAROL singers in the city have raised thousands of pounds for a homeless charity.

In the lead up to Christmas, a group of friends combined largely from churches in the city, gathered outside Chichester Festival THeatre to sing carols and raise funds for Stonepillow.

THe group has been doing this for more than 30 years and it’s gone from success to success, this year raising £3,600.

Laura Bulbeck, Stonepillow's PR and events manager, added: "We are so grateful to the group for giving up their time to raise funds at 13 performances and to Janet Bakose, Chichester Festival THeatre manager, for allowing them to do so.

"We would also like to thank members of the public for their generosity which contributed towards this brilliant total."

` Christmas dinners THE ROTARY Club of Chichester Priory held a free Christmas Day Dinner where 100 Rotarians, guests and volunteers attended and served meals.

THe roast dinner was followed with Christmas pudding, mince pies, and drinks all cooked by Julie and her team from Community Fundraisers, at the Newell Centre, Chichester.

Rotarian Doug Price said: "THose attending were in good voice joining in with carol singing, quizzes and fun with good company, conversation and bonding to enjoy."

Calls to help with hygiene to those in need in the city

THe Hygiene Bank Charity offers everyone the chance to make a difference in people’s lives by donating unused and in date hygiene products to help those who often, through no fault of their own, have fallen on hard times.

Project coordinator Maggie said: "THe philosophy of the Hygiene Bank, to reduce hygiene poverty in the UK, resonates with me and I am thankful that I can contribute, in a small way, to reducing hygiene poverty locally.

"We are frequently reminded of the number of people in the UK who live in poverty. When hardship strikes, people often need to make the decision about whether to buy food or stay clean.

"To be unable to afford hygiene products in order to stay clean must be humiliating. I hear of women using socks or scrunched up toilet paper because they cannot afford sanitary products. THis is the distressing fact of life for some. Being clean can help improve mental and physical well-being, increase dignity and selfconfidence."

THe charity is run by volunteers who establish local collection points, where people can drop off in date and unused hygiene products. THe volunteers then

collect and sort the donations and pass these to their charity partners for distribution to people in need.

Maggie said the charity was in need of more volunteers to take the project forward and increase the number of collection points and partner charities.

She added: "Obviously, our biggest need is for people to donate hygiene products. I’d really like to increase the

number of charity partners. We don’t donate products directly to people but pass them on to charities who work directly with those in need. I’d like to also work with schools."

THe project is new to Chichester and already has four collection points: THe Body Shop and Studio 46 in East Street, Between the Lines in North Street and the Chapel Street Clinic.

In the first six weeks. people had already donated nearly 50kg of products.

Currently the charity has two charity partners - StonePillow and the Chichester District Foodbank.

A record number of dippers make a splash at the beach for the new year

Around 227 dippers braved the cold sea temperatures to take part in the annual 1st Birdham and Witterings Scout group’s New Year’s Day Big Dip. THey were watched by around 2,000 spectators from the beach and promenade at the end of Shore Road, East Wittering.

Friends, Angelique McGuigan, Sylvia Pyne and Allison Guinness dressed from head to toe as film favourite, THe Joker.

Angelique from Bracklesham who has taken part in the event for the past six years said it was a great way to see in the new year.

"We saw the movie THe Joker a few months ago and thought, that's it, that's the outfit we will be wearing.

"I absolutely love this event. It's a great way to see in the new year, and actually the new decade. We will be back again next year!

"THe temperature wasn't too bad this year. THe sea was cold but the air temperature was definitely warmer so I'm not shivering now."

THe popular event, which has been held for many years by the 1st Birdham and Witterings Scout group, brings spectators and dippers from far afield to observe and take part in this fun event.

Group Scout leader, Ray Nye said: “I

know I say the same thing every year, but we can't believe how many people are taking part and watch.

"It's getting so popular, we were worried we might have to cap the number of entries, but of course it's a public space!

"We have to say a huge thank you to all the residents and visitors who support us every year.

"THe general public make the event the success that it is - also the Shore Pub for the use of their premises, Calamity's for the catering, Hawkins and Smith for extra signage, St John's Ambulance and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service."

THe new year event which is run by the Scout Group for many year, follows its Santa Sleigh event around Birdham, Bracklesham Bay and the Witterings before Christmas.

Monies raised by both events will be put towards the re-building of their long awaited HQ along with the annual running costs of the group.

Money will also go toward funding for a scout, young leader and a leader to attend the Jamboree in Poland later this year.

Andrew Wright and his two sons, 14-year-old Noah and 11-year-old Hugo, used a selection of random items they found for their fancy dress, including top hats and ties.

Andrew said: "THis was our first time doing the dip but it was great! It was really good fun, but certainly cold. THey have been really looking forward to it.

Certainly yesterday and this morning."

Noah said: "It was colder than I thought it would be, but we will definitely be doing it again."

THeresa Vine and Mandy Simmons from the Witterings dressed as Batman and Robin for their third dip.

Mandy said: "It was amazing! THis was our third year and every year the turnout is bigger and better. It's got such a family atmosphere, it's fantastic.

"Last year we were Rastafarians, the year before that we were nuns, this year we are Batman and Robin and next year, watch this space."

Carl Debeger dipped for the second year and said it's something he now does since moving to the area.

He said: "It's a traditional thing to do around here. It's got a good atmosphere and raises money for the scouts.

"Last year I wore a Union Jack onsie and this year I am David Hasslehoff,.

It's Baywatch, it's appropriate for the beach."

Jill Lawrence, aged 76 did the dip with her daughter Fiona Lawrence and friend, Zena McCarthy.

Zena said: "My legs were freezing, but it's not too bad. It was our first time doing it."

Jill added: "I just wanted to do it. It was to say we had done it, something for the family memory box! We will be back next year."

Festive traditions are displayed with Christmas at the Singleton museum VISITORS to the Weald and Downland Museum were treated to sounds, smells and tastes of Christmas in bygone times.

Although heavy rain on Boxing Day reduced visitor numbers to about 400, Friday was much busier at the Singleton site, with families enjoying a chance to get out in the fresh air and enjoy finding out how their ancestors celebrated the festive season.

From Tudor to Victorian times, a historic festive treat awaited visitors on THursday and Friday last week, when the museum’s traditionally decorated houses reflected the spirit of Christmas through the ages.

Cosy open fires in many of the restored historic houses drew in people to see traditional green decorations and look at displays of period-style food and drink, including the chance to try samples of plum pottage, warm cider and apple juice.

Sarah Miller, from Nutbourne, visited on Friday with her husband Colin and their eight-year-old daughter Isabelle.

She said: "We were going to come yesterday but the weather was just awful.

We decided to come today instead as it's dry!

"Isabelle has really enjoyed looking at the decorations and the different styles of food and drink.

"We enjoyed the entertainment outside too. It's just somewhere different to go and something different to see."

Stories will range from mythology and Shakespeare to Viking legends and accounts of smuggling and poaching in years gone by.

THere are stories to delight every age, and all will be told within the historic buildings of the museum.

THe day will also feature traditional wassailing with a procession of music and songs that will move from the Market Square to the Orchard.

Traditionally, wassailing was a ceremony to promote a good harvest for the coming year.

Emma Keen, marketing manager at the museum, said: "THis Historic Life Weekend is the first of a series across the year, and we’re delighted to have such a rich programme of stories and activities to capture and inspire our visitors in a day filled with history."

Among the award-winning museum’s collection of homes, shops and public buildings where the stories can be enjoyed are the traditional bakehouse, dairy and watermill where visitors can discover live demonstrations.

THis event is one of many at the museum in the coming year and highlights the broad range of activities and experiences designed to provide an immersive and interactive view of history.

Volunteers were on hand in each building to explain how Christmas was marked in eras such as those of the Tudors, Stuarts, Georgians and Victorians.

As a centrepiece in the Market Square, good triumphed over evil as a Mummers' play was performed to show rural winter entertainment of the old days.

Graham Williams and his wife Molly took their grandson Teddy and granddaughter Cassie to the museum.

"It's a great educational place to come with the grandchildren," he said.

"It gets the kids outside in the fresh air and enjoying the entertainment on offer.

"We come up here regularly to different events when we can."

Museum director Simon Wardell said: "We enjoyed welcoming many visitors as part of their celebrations at this time of the year to find out more about how those living in the homes here may have experienced Christmas, how this has changed over time, as well as enjoying the atmosphere of the Museum."

THe first of this year’s series of Historic Life Weekends will be held on Saturday, January 18.

City's college gets award for top services for it's students

THe college group has received a Matrix Quality Standard Award reaccreditation in recognition of the clear and impartial advice and guidance that is provided to students studying across each of its colleges across Sussex, which include Chichester College and Brinsbury College.

THe Matrix Standard is the quality framework for organisations to assess and measure their information, advice and guidance (IAG) services.

Assessors met with students and staff across the group, inspecting the delivery of IAG at every stage.

THey highlighted the introduction of new services including Progression Plus centres, which provide impartial in-depth information and guidance on a range of opportunities with a central focus on careers advice.

THe assessors also looked at the new ACES programme – a yearlong series of interactive workshops centred on personal development to ensure students gain the 'Attitude, Choice and Employability' skills needed to achieve their future aspirations.

THe report stated: ‘Chichester College Group (CCG) has ensured that its commitment to IAG being a golden thread of the learner’s experience is underpinned

with high quality resource’ and ‘service delivery approaches are implemented with energy, passion and commitment, ensuring this multi-tiered IAG provision is joined up to have maximum impact on student.’

Shelagh Legrave, the chief executive at CCG, said: “Delivering excellent services to our students at each of our colleges is at the heart of everything we do.

“For our progression teams in particular, this means ensuring all of our students can access high quality information, advice and guidance that is tailored to helping each of them – as individuals – raise their aspirations and make the right decisions for them.

“No two students are the same, and it’s important that they receive impartial advice and information that will help them find the path that will help them achieve their ambitions.

“THe feedback we have received in our Matrix accreditation demonstrates that we are doing just that, and this is a credit to the staff at all of our colleges.”

THe report concluded that ‘an outcome-based IAG experience is being deeply embedded across the whole Chichester College Group.

THe assessment confirmed a firm focus upon ensuring that every staff member understood and played their part to make a difference to the full range of students, from foundation learning to higher education graduates.

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE CHIEF executive officer of the University of Chichester Academy Trust, has been named in the Queen’s 2020 New Year’s honours for her outstanding contribution to education.

Sue Samson, a former director of Academies for London and the South East for the Department for Education, has become a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Mrs Samson has overseen the significant growth of the University of Chichester Academy Trust since its inception in 2012, developing a multiacademy model of 15 schools that educate more than 5,000 children.

"I am delighted to have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list," said Mrs Samson.

"It is a validation of the commitment of so many teachers and headteachers that I have worked with and the fantastic achievements of so many children. THey are the true hero’s and I am delighted to accept the honour on their behalf."

With the backing of the University of Chichester’s 180-year heritage of training teachers, she has created a vibrant, inclusive, and aspirational family of academies, transforming life chances for pupils through excellent teaching and learning.

First ever Bognor social walk

Setting off from West Park Cafe in Bognor Regis on January 12, trainer LucyAmie Rose Towner-Hibberd, will help you out every step of the way as owners are able to socialise their dogs in a calm and controlled way.

Hosted by Bone Canis, the walk itself will be free, but walkers are being asked for a donation of £1 for Clymping Dog Sanctuary.

Like a prior walk in Billingshurst, the event will be an on-lead one, so everyone is welcome.

Take some time to mingle and say hello to other walkers, THere is nothing like the support of other owners of dogs with issues.

Organisers just ask that everyone is mindful of those who do not want to be approached.

Always ask first and never let your dog approach another dog without asking the

owner first.

It’s always over far too quickly for my liking…But at the same time, I am very eager to crack on with the new year! So many exciting things coming up and I feel it’s a great time to cleanse and take the opportunity to treat your body to some real goodness.

Start the new year by spring cleaning your body. One of the things I see a lot of in my clinics are people who are over medicated, or perhaps been taking medication for a long time, and either don’t need it anymore, or it’s just not been reviewed for a while.

I am not at all saying take this matter into your own hands. Of course, you should speak to your GP about it, but it might just be something to consider.

Most medication can be toxic and often comes with unwanted side effects. So, if you think you need to re-look at what you are taking then this could be your first port of call for the new year.

Very rarely these days do I see anyone with a blank canvas (meaning they take no medication at all). So, perhaps

looking into the possibility of some amazing natural remedies as alternatives could be worth your time and effort.

Medication, of course, has its place and can be lifesaving, but all I am saying is make sure you are on top of what you really need. I see people all the time that just feel tired for no apparent reason.

Sometimes this can be a side effect of a cocktail of medications.

Other times of course, there can be another undetected reason. But either way, cleaning up your diet has got to be a good thing, right? THe body is constantly trying to renew and repair each and every cell.

So, if you give it the right fuel, then it stands a better chance of rebalancing and giving you the va-va-voom that you need. For example: 1. If you have a cold or sore throat – Try echinacea tincture drops, manuka honey, chewing raw ginger, adding more garlic and chilli to your foods, and gargling with saltwater.

2. Instead of reaching for the antacids when you have heartburn and acid reflux, try baking soda, aloe vera juice, apple cider vinegar, chlorella, sauerkraut and soothing mint or camomile tea.

3. If you are suffering from anxiety look at introducing meditation into your daily regime. It really only needs to start with five minutes every morning, just to get into a routine. You will be amazed how much this simple exercise reduces feelings of anxiety.

Natural treatments that can really help are black cohosh, ginseng, lemon balm, maca root, omega 3 fatty acids, probiotics and St John wart. THese all need to be accompanied by a good whole food diet, as the minerals in plant-based food help to balance the body and restore exhaustion and fatigue.

4. If you have high cholesterol, try

changing your diet and seeing the results in just a few weeks. Drinking freshly squeezed orange juice, or coriander seed tea, increasing your omega 3 fatty acids such as flaxseeds, avocados and fish, and including oatmeal, plenty of green vegetables and beans daily can have a dramatically positive impact.

5. If you suffer from joint pain, arthritis, heart disease, skin issues such as eczema then you need to reduce your inflammation by eating more broccoli, olive oil, blueberries, fish, nuts, (free from salt or roasting) tart cherry juice, kelp, fermented foods, (known as probiotics) papaya and green tea.

Just know that you are in charge of your body. Let this be the year that you become empowered to take control of your mind, your body and your physical strength!

You can do so much to help yourself live pain free and with all the energy that you need!

Sportinbrief  Rugby JESS BREACH grabbed a first-half hat-trick as Harlequins swept to a 47-26 victory over a star-studded Leinster Women at Twickenham.

Breach, from Chichester, showcased her talents as Quins’ women followed the men’s sideafter their 30-30 draw with Leicester Tigers as part of the Big Game 12 package for the first time.

THe former Chichester and Pulborough youngster got Quins off to a flying start in a dominant first-half performance.

She went over after just nine minutes and doubled her tally four minutes later when she dodged the Leinster full-back out wide.

THere were further tries from Rachael Burford and Irish international Anna Caplice before Breach completed her hattrick just before the interval to help Quins open a 33-12 lead at the turnaround.

Further tries from Amy Cokayne and Fi Fletcher sealed Quins’ victory in a friendly fixture.

Meanwhile, Chichester return to London One South action tomorrow when they go to KCS Old Boys.

THe Old Boys are four points behind seventh-placed Blues (36) after 14 matches.

THe visitors are fourth in the table while Blues are eighth.

Bosham enjoyed a 3-0 triumph over Ferring in division two last Saturday.

Alex Barnes got a double for the Robins with goals in the 29th minute and on the hour while Luke Woolcombe's 85thminute effort to finish off a counter attack wrapped up the win.

Barnes missed out on a hat-trick when he had a penalty saved in the 68th minute.

Bosham head to the side one place above them in eighth Angmering Village tomorrow (2pm).

 Rugby SUSSEX RFU's December Lets Make it Happen award went to Sussex Police RFC. Playing at Chichester's Oaklands Park home on the last Saturday before Christmas, the Police nicked players (pun intended) from four other clubs to get a match played.

THey started with 13-a-side and ended with ten-a-side.

Sussex competitions secretary Peter Sealey said: "THis is a good example of what we are trying to promote within the RFU 'Game On' initiative. Never mind the problems, set-backs, number and playing protocols - just get out there!"

A chance to see Wild in the Lions BOSS Kerry Hardwell is delighted to have boosted Pagham's firepower with the signing of frontman Jimmy Wild.

THe former Bognor and Worthing hitman has joined the Lions from Chichester City and will go straight into the squad for the trip to secondfrom-bottom Hassocks tomorrow (3pm KO).

Hardwell told THe Post: "He is a great signing and will no doubt give the club a massive boost.

"Jimmy's experience at playing at a higher level will be invaluable to the squad and I hope he hits the ground running with good performances and, of course, goals."

Hardwell is grateful to BetVictor South East Chichester for getting the move made.

He added: "I'd like to say a a big thank you to Andrew Bell and Graham Gee at Chichester for getting the transfer form done so quickly."

Hardwell was left frustrated as Pagham were denied a win over rivals East Preston in a game that was abandoned at half-time on Boxing Day. THe Lions led 2-1 at the break through a double from Lukas Franzen-Jones after Dan Simmonds had scored from the spot for the hosts.

But Hardwell was left to question whether the game should ever have kicked off in the SCFL Premier after the teams did not emerge for the second period as conditions became unplayable at Lashmar Road.

He said: "Boxing Day football is never ideal as it’s the most busy time of year but availability from my boys was superb.

"I thought common sense should have prevailed however.

"THe referee had asked both teams to warm up outside the ground on the local park pitch as the pitch was boggy - for the life of me I can’t understand why the game was even started if he and his officials had doubts over it and with the weather forecast.

"On a positive note, I was proud of all the boys with their attitudes and their performances in what was a good, competitive SCFL game.

"I must say a big thank you to Aaron Miller and the rest of my coaching staff for their work over the festive period too."

THe Lions were left to kick their heels last Saturday too after their game at Lingfield was also postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Faversham Town (A) Tomorrow (Saturday January 4), at 3pm

Barn's stormers grab hold of pairs crown in fine style FORTY-ONE teams took part, exactly the same as last year, at the Newtown Social Club in the Divisional Pairs Knockouts with Old Barn’s Andy Cooper and Gary English winning the Division THree title.

Division THree saw 14 teams involved, more than double compared to last year in the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League knockout tournament.

THe first semi-final saw brothers Mark and Ben Todd (Railway Sleepers) take on Cooper and English (Old Barn), with the latter securing a 2-0 win for their spot in the final.

THe second semi-final saw the husband and wife team of Simon and Jill Mitchell (Newtown Clubbers) against Dan Sapio and Alex Chirat (Chi Snooker Club 'B'), with the Mitchell duo winning 2-0.

In the final, English won the bullseye but the scores on both sides kept the leg even.

A few misses on the finishes from both sides, including a bust of 60 in one dart from Jill Mitchell, eventually saw Cooper hit the double.

THe second leg 2 saw English hit a ton and 137 on the way to taking the leg, despite a scare from Jill Mitchell just missing the double 11 for a 122 out-shot.

Leg three was not as eventful, with the highest score being only 85, but it was still close until English hit double top, taking

the leg and the match 3-0 to seal himself and Cooper the Division THree Pairs champions title.

Division Two saw 11 teams take part, the second lowest turnout on record for the division.

THe first semi-final saw Nick Tabberer and Wayne Green (Pagham CC 'B') take on team-mates Louis Wladon and Max Wladon, with Tabberer and Green winning 2-0. THe second semi-final was between Rob Tite and Dean Ardener (Friary 'D') and Ian Dendy and Dave Wingate (Royal Oak). THe match went to three legs with Dendy and Wingate making the final.

THe Division Two final saw Green win the bullseye for his team and make the best start possible with a maximum 180.

Dendy and Wingate made a great start, both hitting tons with their first throws, but Green hit a ton with his second throw, keeping them in the lead. Both teams then missed a few doubles allowing Green to hit the finish for the leg.

Leg two saw another good start from Dendy with 103 and Wingate with a ton.

Dendy missed a shot at the double, but Wingate took it to make it 1-1. Leg 3 saw two tons from Dendy, but his opponents were not far behind.

Again, missed doubles from both teams gave Tabberer the darts to take the leg. Green started the fourth leg with a ton, and a 101 from Tabberer gave him a chance with his next throw which he took to clinch the leg, and the match 3-1, making himself and Green the Division Two champions.

Division One had 16 teams take part.

THe second round saw the only 180 from the division come from Conner O'Hara (Legends), but he and his father lost 2-0 to Dave Bourne and Jamie Middleton (Little Legends).

Bourne and Middleton met Dave Owens and Richard Ragless (Friary 'Z') in the first semi-final, and beat them 2-1 to make the final. THe second semi-final saw Colin Mace and Rob Collins (Friary 'Z') take on Lucann Forden and Ryan Barratt (Lamb Shankers), but it was not to be for the Lamb pair as Mace and Collins won 2-0.

but it was too late and Collins took the double. THe third leg saw Middleton hit two tons to start the leg, but a 119 from Collins and a 140 gave them the lead.

Mace missed double 12 for an 81 out shot, but with two darts it was Collins who took the leg and the match win for a 3-0 result, and the Division One pairs champions title for himself and Mace.

Boss demands Rocks reaction after big defeat

JACK PEARCE wants a reaction after Bognor crumbled to a demoralising 3-0 derby day defeat to Worthing in the eagerlyanticipated New Year’s Day showdown.

Former Rocks player Alex Parsons put the visitors on their way to victory with a tenth minute goal.

Further efforts from Joel Colbran and Jesse Starkey consigned Bognor to their first defeat against the Rebels for 20 years.

Bognor are back into BetVictor Premier action tomorrow when they host Margate.

And Pearce knows how they will react will be crucial if they are to reassert their own promotion claims after a loss which left them tenth and six points off the playoff places.

Pearce had no complaints about the scoreline, admitting his side were “shocking” although they might have levelled after Parsons had been gift-wrapped the opener when he robbed the ball off the Rocks defence.

Pearce told The Post: “THe first goal they scored was a gift from us but they had created two or three chances by then through their own good play.

“THe goal we conceded was disappointing and then their keeper made a fantastic save

from a Dan Smith header, which would have been unjust for us to be 1-1 at half-time, but nevertheless was still a very good save. Had we scored that, maybe it would have given us a lift.

“But really it was down to their good play. THey were hungry, they got to the ball first, played good stuff and created chances.

“To be honest, you’d have thought I given my team talk to them and not my lot!”

He added: “We hadn’t played for 18 days, we’ve lost Joe Cook, and we have had Harvey Whyte not well but on the day I have no complaints.

“It’s disappointing but it is what we do on Saturday now that becomes paramount because if we are going to get in the playoffs this year, we can’t afford to have performances like that.

“We were shocking in my opinion. On Saturday, we shall see if we have learned anything or we haven’t.”

Influential on-loan defender Cook has been recalled by Havant and Waterlooville.

Some good news for Rocks were attacking threats Brad Lethbridge and Mason Walsh were on the bench and came on while Portsmouth academy defender Harry Kavanagh made a solid debut to pick up home man-ofthe-match honours.

Chi primed for tough road trip COACH Darin Killpartrick says Chichester City cannot afford to take anyone lightly in BetVictor South East as they head to Faversham Town tomorrow (3pm KO).

Chi are 14th in the table while the Kent side are two points behind in 17th having played four more games.

Faversham have only lost twice at home so will prove a stern test but Killpartrick believes that is par for the course in Isthmian football.

He told The Post: "We have done our due dilligence on them and watched videos but there is not a bad team in the league.

"THere is probably a top four in this league and apart from that I think anyone is capable of beating anyone else.

"I found that at Bognor in the Isthmian Premier but not so much when you go into the Conference South.

"In the Isthmian League it is about what your players turn up with on the day.

"You can technically and tactically be ready but if your players haven't got that hunger and desire to want to win the game, then whoever has is capable of taking it."

Chi had to settle for a draw last Saturday when Burgess Hill scored in added time for a 2-2 draw at Oaklands Park.

Jamie Horncastle had given Chi a third-minute lead but O'Shaye GiraudHutchinson struck on 68 minutes to level.

A Scott Jones header from a Gicu Iordache cross in the 74th minute looked to have won

the game but Max Miller levelled deep in stoppage time.

Killpartrick admitted: "I think we're still just coming back from the hangover of the FA Cup run.

"It will be interesting what the next three months bring.

"It was an incredible journey which has

financially stabilised the club for a couple of years, which is a good thing.

"THe squad is looking strong now and it is nice that we are getting competition for places back now, which is exactly what we want."

Jimmy Wild has made a move to Pagham and goes with the best wishes of the club.

WELL, that wasn't the start to 2020 we were hoping for.

A 3-0 home defeat to our biggest rivals Worthing was not how we wanted to begin this new decade.

Hats off to Worthing, though, they played very well. THey have a young, fit and strong team right across the pitch and, particularly in attack, they are very good.

I am not looking for excuses but with the last three games being called off before this one, particularly the Lewes game which was postponed so late, that did not help our build up to such a big match.

THe annoying thing is we had been in such good form until those postponements.

A lot of people were saying we were due a poor game as we had had such a good run leading up to this game.

Despite everything, there was a good atmosphere at the game. It was a big crowd, so from that side of things it was good apart from the result.

You never want to lose at home but we are back at Nyewood Lane tomorrow against Margate.

We beat them 6-1 away earlier in the season so I see no reason why we cannot get a result against them again.

Worthing, I believe, will be battling with Folkestone Invicta at the top of the league for promotion on the evidence of what I witnessed on new year's day.

THey have the likes of exRocks Ollie Pearce, Alex Parsons and Darren Budd, while even Reece Meekums had a spell with us last season.

So they have a good young squad and a decent manager in Adam Hinshelwood, too.

I think it is the first time since 1999 that they have beaten us at Nyewood Lane. THat tells you how long it is since they have got such a result, although they drew with us last

season at our place. It was the result they have been after for many years.

Worthing came in to the game off the back of their Boxing Day win over Horsham and you could see from the first whistle they were really up for it.

It's a disappointment to lose to our main rivals but they look like a team that should firmly be in the play-offs, maybe even automatic promotion if they can get past Folkestone.

As for Bognor, I still believe we can get into the play-offs and so do a lot of other people.

We've got a good strong squad and, although there are certain areas we could improve, I think they are just getting back into the swing of football after so many games called off. I think we can get fifth or sixth and in the mix.

We are still in the Sussex Senior Cup, where we shall play Brighton if they get past Burgess Hill. THat will be at home.

We are also in the Velocity Trophy and I'm not sure how important that is to us. We have Folkestone away. THere's no money in that competition and it is a long midweek trip.

Defender Joe Cook is a big loss. He is back at Havant and I think his presence would have made us more assured at the back against Worthing.

THe first goal was a mistake but the second was a header at the back post from a corner. We knew it was over at 2-0 down.

A positive was the return of Brad Lethbridge and Mason Walsh from injuries. I do rate both Mason and Bradley and when they are fully fit they will help us.

Hopefully they can help Dan Smith get more ball up front.

THe downside was Ashton Leigh going off injured. It seems we get one back and lose another. It is frustrating.
