Developer picked for gateway

Chichester District Council selected its preferred development partner to deliver the Southern Gateway regeneration project.

Developments will work to transform the southern area of Chichester into what the council has described as 'a vibrant and attractive new quarter,' as proposed in the Southern Gateway Masterplan.

"We are incredibly pleased to have reached this pivotal stage in the project," said Cllr Martyn Bell, cabinet member for growth, place, and regeneration.

"Selecting a developer signals a key step forward for this major regeneration

project. A lot of progress has been made in the past year, with the help of our partners, West Sussex County Council, Homes England, and Coast to Capital.

We started the selection for a developer in May last year, and received interest from some very strong candidates.

"We are confident that Henry Boot Developments is the best choice to take the visions and aims of the Southern Gateway Masterplan and make these a reality for the benefit of the

community."

Celebrations as city church gets funds for disabled access ST PAUL’S Church in Chichester is celebrating after receiving £74,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help improve disabled access.

THe church, in Churchside, will use the cash to support the disabled and vulnerable in the parish.

At the same time, the church will be able to press on with its plan to organise and deliver an inclusive ten day heritage festival for the community, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the amalgamation of St Paul’s with St Peter’s the Great – planned for June 13 – 21.

THe proposals for improved access have been aired both to the congregation and to user groups of the church centre, over two consultation meetings and a presentation, and have met with an enthusiastic response.

Planning permission has also been granted. THe church has also received support from Chichester City Council and the Duke and Duchess of Richmond.

THe Rector, Canon Simon Holland, said: “We are delighted that the Heritage Fund has recognised our work in this way.

"St Paul’s Church and Parish Centre are open every day of the year, and we are keen to make them as safe and accessible as possible.

"THe National Lottery Heritage Fund grant will ensure that they are truly welcoming for those who are disabled or infirm, as well as for parents with buggies and for young children.

"It will enable us to serve the community in a more inclusive way, and we are extremely grateful."

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk BOATS in the canal were airlifted and cleaned on Wednesday morning as part of an annual inspection.

THe annual spectacular began before 9am on Wednesday morning with a 160 ton crane lifting Boxer, one of the smaller boats, and then Richmond, the canal's bigger trip boat, from the water.

A third boat, a tug boat called Frisky was also looked at as there were issues with the steering as with Boxer. THese issues were rectified and the boats were put back in the water.

Every year, one of the trip boats has to be inspected, because these boats carry passengers, the Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has to ensure everything is in good order. THe lift out is necessary so the MCA can check the hull.

While the boats are on land it gives the canal volunteers the opportunity to clean the hull, and after inspection apply blackening for protection. THe steering, propeller and other accessible equipment are also checked.

THe canal's other trip boat, Kingfisher was lifted but not taken completely out of the water so the team could check the sonic protection system to make sure the

hull was clean which it was.

Malcolm Maddison from the canal said there weren't as many members of the public watching this year but that may have been due to the rain.

He said: "We were lucky with the weather as it did rain hard but we were concerned as the forecast seemed a lot worse. Fortunately, it improved, but had this been scheduled a day earlier we may not have been able to proceed.

"Richmond is having a full refit over the next few weeks and we will be removing the engine and replacing that, too."

Rumboldswhyke school set to close - See page five

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council’s cabinet member for the economy, welcomed the selection of a development partner.

He said: "THis is a big step forward.

THe Southern Gateway proposals are a key part of the Chichester growth deal and developing the site will contribute to the housing needs identified by Chichester District Council."

THe project aims to encourage economic growth and create new, better paid jobs by transforming this largely brownfield area.

THe 30-acre site will be regenerated to feature an estimated: • 365 new homes • 20,600 square metres of commercial space, including business and retail space and leisure and tourism facilities • Improved transport links and a focus on cycling, walking and public transport • Public space enhancements and landscaping.

THe project is predicted to create about 1,400 jobs and protect at least

200 existing jobs.

It is also a key project in the Chichester Vision, which aims to boost economic growth in Chichester city centre. THe aim is to help Chichester attract inward investment and stimulate economic growth by making the most of its heritage and culture, while also adapting to better meet the needs of residents, workers, visitors, and students. Priorities are to reduce traffic, support independent businesses and create a more diverse evening culture.

THe Southern Gateway project is also part of the One Public Estate West Sussex programme, which aims to reduce revenue costs, improve public services and release land for housing and economic growth.

` Chief exec payout CHICHESTER Labour party has condemned the settlement payout of £265,000 by West Sussex County Council to its outgoing chief executive, Nathan Elvery.

THe council received a damning Ofsted report last year, quickly followed by a highly critical report into its fire and rescue services.

A Labour party spokesman said: "As chief executive, Mr Elvery has overseen cuts of £4 million to housing-related support, causing the chief executive of turning tides homeless project to warn of a human and financial catastrophe as pressure grows on services for the most vulnerable.

"THe local assistance network is totally decimated and currently our libraries and other services are under threat.

"THis payout is yet another example of the crassness and craven disregard for the public shown by the Tory administration at the council."

Ex-priest convicted of sexual offences

A FORMER Church of England priest has been convicted of sexual offences against a girl and woman in Chichester in the 1970s and 1980s, following a Sussex Police investigation.

Meirion Griffiths, 81, formerly of Coachwood Way, Maddington, Perth, Western Australia, was convicted at Portsmouth Crown Court on Monday, January 13, after a six-day re-trial, of two counts of indecent assault against a girl then in her late teens in the mid-1970s, one of them involving multiple occasions, and two counts of indecent assault against a woman then in her mid-twenties in 1982.

Griffiths was the vicar at St Pancras Church, Chichester, at the times of the offences.

He was remanded in custody for sentencing on a date not yet set by the court. He was found not guilty of two counts of indecent assault, one against each of the women.

At Winchester Crown Court on August 7, 2019, a jury had failed to agree on verdicts over the same six counts against Griffiths after an eight-day trial, and was discharged.

All the offences took place in Chichester or other nearby locations in West Sussex.

THe prosecution followed an investigation by Sussex Police detectives after the allegations were received in 2014.

Detective Constable Jo French said: "THis abuse has clearly had a profound impact on both victims ever since.

"Griffiths, by virtue of his position as local vicar, came to know them quite separately, and gained their confidence in order to

systematically abuse their trust in him for his own sexual gratification.

"Both victims came forward quite independently five years ago, having finally found the resolve to come forward to seek justice.

"THey have supported our investigation and gave evidence at both trials. We admire their resilience and courage in coming forward and doing so.

THe two victims each eventually moved away from the area and Griffiths emigrated to Western Australia in 1988. It was there that he was arrested on an extradition warrant in November, 2017, as a result of the Sussex Police investigation, and he was finally extradited to the UK in January, 2019, to face trial.

THroughout the investigation Sussex Police have had full co-operation from the Chichester Diocese of the Church of England.

Police emphasise that there are no current safeguarding issues or risks for anyone connected to St Pancras Church in relation to the case.

Bosham bus users celebrate as beloved bus time returns THE BOSHAM 56 bus, on which many non-car owners rely, is once again leaving the village car park at 9.30am.

West Sussex County Council had originally asked for the timetable changes to fit in with school start times and Stagecoach received varying representations.

A member of the Bosham Association, working in conjunction with the committee, made the journey at different times of the day and researched who used the bus, why the change in time caused real difficulties, and looked at possible ways the council and vulnerable pensioners could both get what they needed.

A spokesman for the group said: "Our county councillor, Louise

Goldsmith, took the resultant paper to the council and on to the helpful management of Stagecoach."

Cllr Louise Goldsmith added: "I am so delighted that the original timetable has been reinstated as this bus is very well used by many, not only in Bosham but in Fishbourne too.

"It was real teamwork and thanks to the Bosham Association, who provided a considerable a compelling and factual case for the reinstatement of the 56 bus for me to discuss with WSCC and Stagecoach.

"So we need to say a big thank you to both of them for listening, understanding and acting.

"Last Monday really was a very happy all aboard the 56."

Decisions on small schools made by the county council

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A CITY councillor has pledged she will pull out all the stops to save a local school from closure.

Emotions ran high in the public gallery on Tuesday morning when councillors met to make decisions on schools in Chichester and the surrounding villages.

West Sussex County Council cabinet members agreed with the recommendation to consult on the closure of Rumboldswhyke C of E Infant School in September, 2020, and to progress federation proposals for Compton and Up Marden C of E Primary School.

Cllr Nigel Jupp, cabinet member for education and skills, told members that Rumboldswhyke had been rated inadequate by Ofsted and closure was the only option.

He also told councillors that although there had been some interest in the school to become an academy it was only if the school was an all-through primary school, not in its current form as an infant school.

At Compton and Up Marden, Cllr Jupp said work had been carried out in the past few weeks to secure a federation partner. A federation is where a number of maintained schools come together under one governing body.

A public consultation in October and November last year asked people for their views on a range of options for five schools which had been identified for these

reasons.

THe consultation looked at whether these schools should remain as they were, needed to federate with neighbouring or nearby schools, to merge with neighbours, be relocated or to close.

A total of 1,045 responses were received to the consultation and 550 people attended public meetings held at each school.

Recommendations from the children and young people’s services select committee to postpone the consultation were debated. However, these were not taken forward because 'alternative options for the schools will continue to be pursued during the period of consultation'.

Cllr Jupp said: "I do not underestimate the effect discussions of closure of schools has on their communities, the staff who work at them, on parents and, most importantly, on children.

"However, it is our duty to make sure the education children receive in our county is of a consistently high quality and meets the standards that our children deserve.

“We recognise the pressures schools are under and will continue to offer them the support and guidance to make the necessary changes to meet the needs of children in our county.

“THe cabinet does not take these decisions lightly and I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in the next consultation.”

County councillor Jamie Fitzjohn told the Post after the meeting: "I am deeply

disappointed with the county council cabinet's decision to proceed with the closure of Rumboldswhyke school."

City councillor Sarah Sharp added: "Rumboldswhyke's situation is more dire still as the Interim Executive Board that was appointed by West Sussex is doing nothing to save the school and we, the Save Rumboldswhyke School team, are working to support the school and do the liaising with potential academy partners.

"It was also deeply disappointing that the Diocesean Academy Trust hasn't offered to take the school under its wing and support C of E education in the city. I can assure you that I will be making some phone calls about this and make sure that all the stops are pulled out to save this school."

A consultation on the decisions will run on the council’s website from February 3, for six weeks. A final decision on each of the schools will be made in April.

` Cash machine theft POLICE have launched an investigation following the theft from a cash machine in Chichester.

Officers were alerted to two men breaking into the ATM at Tesco in Fishbourne Road at around 1.30am on Monday.

THe two men were dressed in dark clothing with their hoods up and are believed to have driven to the store but parked their vehicle in the housing estate behind.

Police conducted a search of the area but the suspects were not found.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, saw any suspicious behaviour in the area at this time or has CCTV footage of the theft, is asked to report online or call 101 quoting reference 82 of 13/01.

SOUTHERN passengers have welcomed improvements at Chichester after having had their say on how station upgrade money should be spent.

West Sussex Rail Users Association and fellow passengers put forward their ideas for Govia THameslink Railway’s passenger benefit fund, calling for upgrades to toilets and seating.

Chichester rail-users are able to rest their legs following the installation of eight new wooden benches on platforms.

Trevor Tupper, of the West Sussex Rail Users Association, said: “We’re very pleased with the work so far.

THe new wooden seats are far more comfortable than the old metal ones.”

Newly-formed football teams, infant agility and the launch of the Daily Mile are proving to be successful additions to school life for youngsters at Chichester Free School.

THe new football teams entered the Chichester and Bognor Regis Football Tournament for pupils in Years 5 and 6 earlier this month and beat a number of other schools to come third and fourth respectively in the finals.

Also this month, a number of six and sevenyear-olds took part in an infant agility festival in Chichester with 13 other schools, with three CFS students winning activity awards.

THe launch of the school’s new daily mile this term for its primary school age pupils has also been taken up enthusiastically by all the children, as well as staff. It takes place when pupils don’t have PE and is for everyone to take at their own pace whatever their ability.

"Since September, we have seen the impact the daily mile is having on our students in lessons, with an increased focus on their work, and on their physical abilities in PE and at break-times," said PE teacher Rochelle Oxley.

"We have also seen an increase in our sporting success during competitions, such as for our new football teams and in infant agility. We’re looking forward to even more achievements in upcoming athletics, hockey and tag-rugby fixtures."

Farewell my Sussex, A Tale of Saxon Chichester, is told through the eyes of the Reeve of the Stockbridge Hundred, magistrate and local administrator for Chichester and the surrounding parishes.

John said: "THe story covers the fateful months of the Norman invasion, the momentous events of which this area must have experienced, being so close to the invasion and battle sites, but about which little appears to have been written .

"What history we do have indicates a peaceful and thriving city and agricultural economy but faced with the dilemma of dispatching its essential workforce of young men to support the King’s army."

It is against this background that John weaves a tale of profiteering,

murder and treason.

"Here was a society soon riven by false rumour and speculation in which he endeavours to portray the fears the community and individual families must have suffered at the subsequent news of the King’s defeat," continues John.

"Would they ever see their loved ones again or were they lying dead on the bloody battlefield ? And what of their own fates when once the Normans arrived?"

In the book, the reader follows Reeve’s account of those survivors who did return to his own neighbouring parish of Donnington and the near loss of his own life when those responsible for the crimes conspire against him. Ultimately growing civil unrest culminates in riot and arson, a precursor to the Normans arrival to build their castle in the city to dominate and subdue the local population.

Special screening to mark day in city

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SPECIAL screening of a film is being held in the city to help mark Holocaust Memorial Day. Auschwitz was liberated on January 27, 1945, and to mark the 75th anniversary, the Chichester Marks Holocaust Memorial Day Committee has created two events.

Push, an opera inspired by the true story of Simon Gronowski who, as an 11-year-old boy, was pushed off a train to Auschwitz by his mother in 1943, will take place at the Chichester Festival THeatre on the day and tickets sold out in just days.

THe second event, on Sunday, January 26, at 11am, will be the screening of the ten-year-old film, Enemies of the People, at New Park Cinema, introduced by the director, Robert Lemkin.

THe documentary is a personal journey into the heart of the Killing Fields and has been described as one of the most harrowing and compelling personal documentaries of our time.

Enemies of the People exposes the truth about the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge who were behind Cambodia's horrific genocide.

THe film’s many awards include British independent film award for best British documentary.

After the screening, there will be a

panel discussion/Q&A in the main cinema which will include Mr Lemkin.

Chairman Clare Apel said: "When Martyn Bell and I started Chichester Marks Holocaust Memorial Day in 2015, we realised how important it is to educate everybody but more importantly, the younger generation, about human rights violation, genocide and all that goes with it.

"It is amazing to think that the theatre have granted us the honour of showing this incredible opera Push to both school children and the general public.

"Secondly, it is extraordinary for us to to be able to show a film about another appalling human rights violation which has taken place in the last 30 years in Cambodia and that the director has agreed to come down to talk about this disturbing, but very necessary topic."

New song to help city cancer charity A NEW song performed by West End singer and actor Felix Mosse has been specially commissioned and recorded to raise awareness of CancerWise, a Chichester charity which provides support services for people diagnosed with cancer, their families and carers.

‘Open Doors’, written by John Gleadall and Greg Mosse (which is also the closing number of their new musical TEAM!) has lyrics inspired by the words of people with lived experience of cancer. Cicestrian Felix Mosse, currently playing Marius in the UK tour of Les Misérables, and whose London theatre appearances include Aspects of Love and THe Book of Mormon, sings the solo, with backing vocals provided by Chichester Festival THeatre’s community Get Singing! Group (of which John Gleadall is musical director).

CancerWise is a cancer charity in Chichester and its support centre is open five days a week, offering counselling, complementary therapies and various specialist support groups for people

experiencing cancer. Carol Gilbert, fundraising volunteer, and Emma Lochhead, trustee for CancerWise and members of CFT’s Get Singing! group, say: "We came up with the idea of a song to raise awareness of CancerWise and everything our Centre represents.

"THe lyrics sum up the experience of someone diagnosed with cancer and the impact that diagnosis has on the patient and their friends and families: when hope is hard, when fears abound and when the feeling of isolation can be profound.

"We wanted to create a song that sums up the welcoming atmosphere at the centre, the opportunity to step inside a warm and inviting environment with so many things on offer: companionship, support and in-depth knowledge of what a cancer diagnosis can mean."

` Animal licences FEES FOR animal licences are set to increase from April to reflect the amount of time it takes to grant, renew and review each one.

THe vast majority of licences cover pet shops, kennels, day care, breeders and the use of animals in exhibitions.

THe fees currently range between £25 and £599, depending on the nature of the business and the number of animals involved, and could be increased by between £15 and £176.

THe council’s general licensing committee will consider the increase in fees, which were recommended at a meeting of the cabinet last week.

Cllr Penny Plant, cabinet member for environment, told the meeting that changes to legislation were introduced in 2018, allowing local authorities to charge a ‘reasonable amount’ to cover the costs of the work.

One year on and officers have inspected 69 premises, giving them a much better idea of how long each licence takes to deal with and how much the process costs.

Mrs Plant said councils were not allowed to make a profit from the licensing and the increase in fees would make the whole process ‘costneutral’, ensuring Chichester did not lose money either.

A report to the meeting said the 2018 regulations had been ‘generally well-received’ because it was felt they had ‘levelled the playing field between operators’.

Guide dog trainers are exempt, while dog walkers do not need a licence unless they run their service as a business.

Successful comic store moves up the high street

A SHOP in the city centre has moved further up the high street due to popular demand for the goods it sells.

Owen Lambert, who owns Comics Games and Coffee Ltd, has been looking for a move closer to the centre of Chichester for a while and saw the perfect opportunity arise.

THe lease at his previous premises at 58 North Street was up for renewal in December and Owen began looking for a new home for his shop.

THe Coln Gallery closed on August 24 at North House, 66 North Street, and Owen saw this as the perfect venue to relocate to.

Comics Games and Coffee Ltd celebrated their four-year anniversary in December last year and have now moved to a larger store.

"I had been looking for a new shop for a while and our lease was coming up for renewal in December and we've had a big demand;" said Owen.

"We have a big community of people who play all the different kinds of games and read comics and with the small shop we had the gamers in the middle of the shop and it was always just a little bit cramped.

"Now we have got a separate gaming area and people can come in and brose around. THat was the main thing - we wanted to make people as comfortable

as possible."

THe store has events seven days a week already but didn’t have room to run more things but now they can run multiple events at the same time with the added room.

Owen continued: "We can run tournaments alongside people playing board games casually. People have been asking for it for a long time now so we have had to fulfil what people

have been asking for."

Owen says it may seem bizarre that there was demand for his niche goods. He said: "THere has been a renaissance in gaming over the last ten years, largely driven by German board games taken up in America and the resurgence of Dungeons and Dragons and other role- playing games.

"We have events every day of the week so we are trying to act as the

place for people to come and be together socially and Chichester never had a home for this before."

Owen said the staff were there to help people and wanted more of the public to pay games and read comics so everyone was welcome.

England legend Alan Shearer visits city to promote new exercise regime

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk FORMER England footballing legend Alan Shearer fancies England’s chances in this year’s Euro 2020 football tournament, he told the Chichester Post this week.

In an exclusive interview, he said: "I think we have a really good opportunity actually, because our group games are at Wembley and the semi-finals and final are at Wembley.

"Having played at Euro 96 at Wembley, i know what a benefit it can be. If they can do well in the group games and get a bit of momentum going then I don't see why they can't do really, really well.”

Shearer, who scored 30 goals for England, said his main concern was that current-day goal machine Harry Kane, who is currently injured, would be fit enough to take part in the tournament, which gets underway in June.

“We don't know about Harry Kane yet but for the first time in a while, we have options. If he is fit, great and if he's not then it's a great opportunity for someone else.”

Shearer was in the city on Tuesday to promote the new state of the art fitness concept FORTIS, powered by Speedflex, a HIIT-based workout class, at the Westgate Leisure Centre. Westgate is operated by Everyone Active on behalf of Chichester District Council.

Shearer, now a BBC TV Match of the Day pundit, spoke about how important exercise had been in his career.

"Exercise is key for everyone. No matter how young or old you are, it's really important to do some form of exercise.

Obviously, I would love that to be more football-related because that's what I did as a kid and it didn't do me any harm.

"It's what I loved, it's the one thing that I really enjoyed doing. I realise it's more difficult to send your kids outside to play until eight or nine o'clock at night like what I used to do.

"When I finished playing football, I didn't think I was going to exercise that much because I'd exercised almost every single day for over 20 years so I wanted a break from it.

"I soon realised that after doing very little for three weeks, that I had to do something."

Shearer also took time to refer to Chichester City’s amazing FA Cup run this season, which began in August at the extra preliminary round stage, and saw them finally bow out in the second round in January against Tranmere Rovers in a televised match after receiving a firstround bye.

Shearer joked that he wished his home town club Newcastle had also received a bye … as they wouldn't then be facing a cup replay later that evening against Rochdale!

Housebuilder gives cancer charity cash

Established in 1983, CancerWise is an independent cancer charity which supports adults throughout West Sussex and south east Hampshire.

Help includes supporting individuals from diagnosis, during treatment and beyond, as well as providing support for their families and carers.

THe centre provides invaluable emotional and holistic support to its beneficiaries, delivering free counselling and complementary therapies, including art and music therapy, gentle exercise classes, specialist support groups and social events.

CALA Homes, which is building its Shopwyke Lakes development in Chichester, launched the community

bursary in Sussex last year.

THe housebuilder invited organisations, charities and groups in the area to apply for a share of a £7,000 donation to help fund projects that make a difference in the community.

CancerWise was chosen as a recipient of the bursary, with money going towards a series of complementary therapies for cancer patients.

Lisa Joy, centre manager at CancerWise, said: "With one in two individuals being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, our services are essential to a high proportion of individuals.

"In Chichester alone, there are 3,700 people living with cancer each year and this, combined with the other areas we cover, shows a great need for the support we offer.

"We can’t thank CALA Homes enough for its kind donation to our charity, which will be used to fund 138 hours of complementary therapies, such as our art and music therapy sessions."

Dear Editor, THE BBC gave top coverage to the scandalous pay off given to West Sussex County Council's former chief executive, who should have been sacked without any compensation after the Coughlan Report was received.

Nathan Elvery rode back across the Surrey border with £330,000 of our money stuffed in his saddlebags!

THe current issue of Private Eye has awarded him the title of ‘King of the Gravy train'.

He had previously been given £47,500 for removal to Chichester which never took place!

THe actions of the county council from the time Elvery was appointed are being investigated in considerable detail.

I urge readers to email the county council’s monitoring officer, Tony Kershaw, director of law and assurance, at: tony.kershaw@ westsussex.gov.uk as follows: ‘I protest that West Sussex County Council gave Mr Elvery a total of £330,000 of public money instead of sacking him.'

Dear Editor, THe Coughlan report into the appalling failure of child care services confirms major shortcomings that are echoed in relation to other areas of West Sussex County Council activity.

In particular, the council has failed to implement its 2011-26 Transport Plan relating to the upgrade of the A27. THe council has instead chosen to promote the indefensible through the art of obfuscation and the incurring of substantial and avoidable costs.

Looking ahead, new leadership at County Hall is very welcome.

Previous unsubstantiated ideological aspirations have to be turned into realworld deliverables for the benefit of all Chichester residents. We need to fix what we have and that is a good dualcarriageway but with poor junctions.

THe old mantra of more road building to offset congestion is now widely challenged by solid evidence.

Put simply, more new roads equals more traffic equals more pollution equals more climate change. Locally, we must contribute to delivering netzero carbon emissions in a sustainable way which is incompatible with building new roads.

Emissions from congestion can be reduced through a mix of smart

traffic management, changing vehicle technology and junction engineering solutions. Evidence shows that this is cost-effective, can be implemented incrementally, creates close links with train/bus interchanges, complies with policies and addresses the Chichester District Council Local Plan requirements.

UK Infrastructure spending is now predicted to drift from the south to the Midlands and north of England.

We therefore need to focus on green retrofitting the roads we have to make roads fit for a 21st century environment.

Journey reliability and not faster journey times is what matters.

THe stated values of BABA27, that any submission to Highways England needs to be evidence-based, realitychecked and robustly scrutinised, must not be ignored again. THe fracas surrounding the council's submission to Highways England on June 21, 2018, after two years of quasi consultation and subsequently the purported legal costs in endeavouring to defend the indefensible must not be repeated.

Thousands raised for local causes MORE than £12,000 has been raised

by Sussex Co-operative colleagues and customers in 2019 for local causes close to their hearts.

Every year, each Southern Co-op convenience store partners with a special local cause chosen by colleagues.

Store colleagues then have a year to hold fundraising events in aid of the cause.

In 2019, 18 different causes were chosen

by Sussex stores including Bognor Regis Lions Club, Chichester High School, Nyewood C of E Infant School, St Wilfrid's Hospice, Sussex Snowdrop Trust and Wittering District 1st Responders.

Fundraisers for the charities were held by colleagues at 22 stores including Hawthorn Road, Bognor Regis; Bognor Road, Chichester; Cakeham Lane, East Wittering, and Main Road , Yapton.

Jessica Hughes, community investment manager at Southern Co-op, the regional, independent co-operative, said: "Each of

our stores has a budget which they can donate to special projects but this total is separate.

"Every penny has been raised by colleagues and customers who want to help the store's current charity partner.

"A lot of the causes are really small and may simply need help letting people know what they do. Others have been running for years supporting hundreds of residents in their time of need.

"We are so proud of our colleagues who work tirelessly to give back to these causes. THank you."

CLAIMS the safety of the public and firefighters is at ‘significant risk’ due to a control room merger have been strongly denied by fire chiefs.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has been overseeing 999 calls for West Sussex since the merger in December – and the Fire Brigades Union is concerned staff cannot handle the sheer volume of calls.

THe union has also branded as ‘reckless’ the decision to bring East Sussex into the merger.

Richard Jones, the union's south east executive council member, said there had been no increase in staff since the initial merger, with more than 9,000 extra 999 calls expected per year.

Mr Jones added: “THis is blatantly unsafe and unsustainable.

“Surrey’s emergency fire control room is consistently understaffed and control staff were already desperately overstretched before the merger.

“We’re seeing fatigued staff break down in tears, with the immense pressure causing work-related sickness. THe brigade is institutionally unprepared for this merger and it’s causing dangerous operational failures.”

Looking at those ‘failures’, Mr Jones said crews had been sent to 999 calls from the wrong locations and had been sent mobilisation alerts when they were unavailable, causing ‘significant delays in response times’.

THe union has issued a safety-critical notice to Surrey.

While only an advisory document with no legal weight, the notice raises serious concerns around the safety of the current control room set-up.

But Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, chief fire officer for West Sussex, said the

move to a joint control room had been successful.

She added: “As with any project, there is always a ‘bedding in’ period.

“Any issues that have arisen have been quickly resolved and have not affected the way 999 calls are handled, or the level of service people have received, when needing West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service in an emergency.

“We are committed to working hard to address any feedback we receive to continually improve our service.”

A spokesman said the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service ‘strongly refutes’ the union claims, adding that West Sussex and Surrey staff had been working together ‘to provide a more effective and efficient response to emergencies across both counties’.

He added: “THere have been no reports of any delay to response times to any emergency as a result of the new ways of working.”

THe spokesman also said there had been no reports of staff suffering stressrelated illness as a result of excessive workloads.

He added: “Analysis of technical difficulties has shown that these have been ‘teething’ issues that have been quickly resolved or worked around, to mitigate any effect on the services.”

THe decision to add East Sussex to the merger was made in a meeting behind closed doors earlier this week.

Mr Jones said: “We should not be thinking about adding more pressure until Surrey addresses its understaffing and operational failings.

“It’s dangerous for control staff, for firefighters, and for the public.”

` Duke and Duchess DOUBT hangs over the future role Meghan and Harry will have in West Sussex after the royal couple announced they were reducing their duties.

THe Duke and Duchess of Sussex paid their first visit to Chichester and Bognor Regis in October, 2018.

THe royal pair firstly visited Edes House, located in West Street, Chichester, where they were shown the rare Sussex copy of the American declaration of independence.

Meghan and Harry travelled to Bognor Regis where they officially opened the University of Chichester's engineering and digital technology park.

It is now feared this may be the first and only time both areas will have a visit from their royal highnesses.

Mrs Susan Pyper, HM LordLieutenant of West Sussex. said: "I am saddened to learn that TRH THe Duke and Duchess of Sussex have decided to step back from being senior members of the royal family, and would like to wish them well as they develop their new role in the future."

College pupils will compete in skills TWO Chichester College Group students have been named in WorldSkills UK’s official squad – taking them a step closer to competing against the best skilled young people in the world.

Finlay Champion and Jamie Kennard will join the cabinet making team with the aim of representing Team UK at WorldSkills Shanghai in 2021.

THey are among 137 young people to have been selected for the squad, having both picking up silver medals in the national skills finals – Finlay in November, 2019, and Jamie at the 2018 competition.

THey will be aiming to continue the college’s pedigree in cabinet making on the world stage – following in the footsteps of former Chichester College students - Edward Harringman and George Callow, who both won gold for the UK at WorldSkills in 2015 and 2013 respectively.

Finlay – who is also employed at Chichester College as an apprentice – said: “I’m really happy to have been selected as one of three cabinet makers to train for the next WorldSkills competition.

"THat’s been my goal – it was great to win silver at nationals a couple of months ago, but I really wanted a place in the squad.

"I know it’s going to be hard work.

Jamie and I have got a long way to go, but we’ll be supporting each other and focusing on doing the best we can.”

Finlay and Jamie, who study at Brinsbury College (part of the Chichester College Group), will now undertake an intensive 18-month

training and selection process. THey will be guided by Christian Notley MBE, who is the UK training manager for cabinet making – and is also deputy head of learning for furniture at Chichester College.

He said: “It is fantastic to see the college continuing to demonstrate our excellence in cabinet making on a national stage, and to have two more of our students competing to represent their country in the biggest international skills competition is outstanding.

“Over the next 18 months, they will have to focus and work really hard if they want to earn a place in Shanghai. It won’t be easy – they will be put through their paces in intensive workshops and will have to perform to the best of their ability.

“Both of them are very talented and I’m confident they will rise to the occasion.

Ultimately, we will be looking to take the very best cabinet maker to China next year and it is up to them to demonstrate why they should be selected.”

Shelagh Legrave, chief executive of the Chichester College Group, added: “I know I speak for everyone when I say how proud we are of Jamie and Finlay.

“THey have proved they are among the best in Britain, and now they will be competing for the opportunity to among the best in the world.

“We have a fantastic history at WorldSkills in cabinet making with four of our students representing the UK in the past five competitions – claiming two gold medals to top it off.

“It is great to see that pedigree continuing to shine through. I wish them both the best of luck.”

New crowdfunding programme is launched by county council

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A CROWDFUNDING programme launched in May, 2018, has seen more than 100 community-led projects in West Sussex hit their target and the window is now open until THursday, February 13, for community groups to put forward new initiatives and projects they would like to receive funding for.

THe West Sussex Crowd, run in partnership by West Sussex County Council and civic crowdfunding website Spacehive, invites communities to come together and propose ideas to regenerate their local areas.

Since its launch, more than 2,800 local people, businesses, district/borough and town/parish councils have backed projects across the county, collectively raising over £750,000 and showing the strength of community buy-in for their ideas.

Cllr Duncan Crow, cabinet member for fire and rescue and communities, said: "THis grant funding is all about supporting

community projects, strengthening communities and our councillors working with their communities to help generate support for key projects.

"We are thrilled that 107 successful projects have hit their target with many more on the way. THese diverse and extraordinary projects will strengthen local places and make West Sussex an even greater place to live, work and enjoy."

Alongside money raised by outside donations through the West Sussex Crowd, the county council can also pledge to crowdfunding campaigns for projects which will have an impact in their local area. Typically, pledges range from £1,000 - £5,000.

Previous projects which have received funding include: • THe Apuldram Centre near Chichester raised over £10,000, of which £2,500 was pledged by the county council, from 75 backers for a new transit van so they can support more adults with learning disabilities to participate in real life work experience.

• Grandads Front Room in Bognor Regis raised over £9,000, including a county council pledge of £2,053, from 123 backers for a new allotment space, equipment and tools, bringing more local people together.

Chris Gourlay, founder and chief executive of Spacehive, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the county council on this exciting initiative which has already inspired hundreds of people and groups from West Sussex to engage in transforming local places.

“Our shared mission is to empower as many people as possible to shape their local area. We believe that if we can achieve that, people will feel a stronger sense of local belonging, and that the places we create together will better serve the needs and aspirations of local people.”

Council and Citizens Advice join forces to help winter fuel costs YOUR ENERGY SUSSEX has joined forces with Citizens Advice to help vulnerable residents who are struggling to meet their winter fuel costs.

THe council-supported energy supplier has used money from its fuel poverty fund to make emergency fuel vouchers available to qualifying households across Sussex.

THe vouchers - £28 for a single person and £49 for a family - are for vulnerable residents, due to age or a health condition, who are on limited incomes or means-tested benefits and are facing difficult financial circumstances.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for the environment, said: "We run Your Energy Sussex on a not-for-profit basis and put the surplus we generate to good use through initiatives that directly benefit our most vulnerable residents.

"By continuing to grow our customer base, we can continue to build the fund

and have an even greater impact on fuel poverty in years to come."

THe vouchers, which are limited to one per household, are available from Citizens Advice branches along with the full eligibility criteria. You do not have to be a Your Energy Sussex customer to receive a voucher.

Luca Badioli, chief executive officer of Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: "We are committed in tackling fuel poverty and are very excited to be part of this scheme.

Because of this, we will now be able to provide emergency fuel vouchers to people in a crisis as well as being able to deal with the underlying issue that is causing the crisis in the first place in order to prevent the same problem occurring again in the future."

CARBON emissions across the south coast are en-route to tumble after Stagecoach and the University of Chichester unveiled new eco-friendly buses which will carry students across the region.

THe modern double-deckers, which replace the nearly eight-year-old vehicles currently in service, are fitted with technologically-advanced Euro6 engines designed to cut pollution between stops.

Each bus, which includes USB charging ports and wi-fi for passengers, will run between the university’s two campuses weekdays and the Coastliner 700 route from Bognor Regis to Portsmouth at weekends.

University director of estates John Kingdom said: “Environmental sustainability has been adopted into the very heart of our culture – not only in the way students study, but how they travel.

Students are more conscious of living sustainable lifestyles than ever before, so we’re delighted that we now operate one of the most environmentally-friendly bus services on the south coast.

“Our students ride the inter-campuses buses for free which helps to reduce the number of cars on our roads and cuts emissions. We’ve had a successful partnership with Stagecoach for many years so are really pleased to continue that into the next decade.”

THe UK-built buses include ADL smartseats, alongside ergonomic headrests, and audio-visual announcement screens to help riders and students new to the area.

THeir advanced Euro6 engines are

also fitted with modernised alternators and compressors to improve air quality and remove harmful pollutants, notably nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide.

Stagecoach South managing director Edward Hodgson said: “We are delighted to make this investment in providing better transport facilities for students at the University of Chichester.

"THe new buses represent a real enhancement in travel experience, with the Euro6 engines which reduce NOx by 80 per cent and particulates by 50 per cent."

to introduce the new buses comes just months after the University of Chichester was named as the UK’s fifth most environmentally-friendly institution, having reduced its carbon footprint by more than 1,200 tonnes in the last decade.

Simon Wardell, Museum Director, commented: There is something very restful about the atmosphere here. We can learn a lot from the past, particularly from simpler times when the lack of technology meant that people weren’t always in such a rush. Our buildings and architecture gives visitors a real connection to that past and I think that leads us all to reflect and see our present with fresh eyes.

There’s also a chance to learn something, from historical facts to new skills, people often leave with a real sense of achievement at having improved themselves. Its wellknown that being outdoors can boost wellbeing and there are few places more beautiful than the South Downs National Park to enjoy fresh air and the natural world. It’s certainly a wonderful place to work and its very satisfying to see how happy and relaxed visitors are after their visit. It’s definitely something we aim to make sure continues in the future.

The Weald & Downland Living Museum is in its 50th year, opening to the public in 1970, it was founded by Dr J.R Armstrong MBE. The aim of the Museum is to preserve historical buildings and increase the awareness of heritage trades, crafts and industries. Set in the peaceful surroundings of the South Downs National Park, the Weald & Downland Living Museum is home to over 50 historic buildings spanning over 1000 years. Henry's herstory rocks the rafters Theatre review 

By Alicia Denny Six Until January 19 Chichester Festival Theatre, Oaklands Park, Chichester PO19 6AP 01243 781312 box.office@cft.org.uk www.cft.org.uk SIX queens defined by their husband, Henry VIII, are the sassy, stylish - and sexy sisterhood who re-write history as herstory in this glorious upbeat new musical which had the festival theatre rocking to its rafters.

THe fame of the production -

it started life as a show for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 - had gone before it and the atmosphere was buzzing as the incredibly talented half dozen actors, singers and dancers launched into their first number, backed by their all-female fourpiece on-stage band.

THe theme is that each of Henry's wives is competing in a contest to be the audience's favourite, and, therefore, lead singer of the group, by proving they were the most harshly treated by him.

It sounds silly but, after introductory chorus numbers, as each woman sings a solo, their differing personalities emerge and, thanks in no small part to the brilliant lyrics and script by Toby Marlow, who devised the show with Lucy Moss, the serious point of how Henry's wives have been harshly treated by historians down the centuries through being lumped together ,throws a new feminist light on their hidden stories.

THe device of being pop princesses performing a concert

together is great fun and the energy and talents of the six is outstanding, never flagging throughout the 75 minutes they are on stage without an interval. It would be wrong to single out any of the touring cast for extra praise because each brings a different quality to their character while also being very much part of the ensemble.

THe costumes have echoes of genuine Tudor fashion but are very much brought up to date, complete with sparkly boots, which look impossible to dance in, and the slick production has lights and effects as in a rock concert, although, fortunately, without mega amplification, enabling lyrics to be appreciated.

If you're unable to get a ticket for the Chichester shows, fortunately for us on the south coast, further tour dates are at Brighton's THeatre Royal and the Mayflower THeatre in Southampton.

CommunityNews&Views Advertising Feature WE ARE looking ahead to a busy new year at the Aldingbourne Trust with lots of activities taking place at each of our social enterprises.

Our Aldingbourne Country Centre is now open every day, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. We are busy planning our events and activities for the year, starting with pancake week in our Café from February 24-28. We are also running our Mother’s Day vintage afternoon tea on Sunday, March 22, where you can treat your mum, grandma and family to a delicious treat in our cafe. Spaces are limited, so you must pre-book on our website: aldingbournetrust.org Our charity shop in Aldwick Road was busy leading up to Christmas, and even enjoyed a late-night shopping event. We are always looking for donations to support our shop, so if you are having a January clear-out, or maybe received a few unwanted gifts, feel free to drop them in to support us.

Our next disability friendly club night will be held on Wednesday, February 5, from 7pm – 11pm at TAO, Bognor Regis.

We will be hosting a masquerade party where you can dress to impress. We will be giving out free masks on the door and DJs who have a learning disability and/or autism will host the music for the evening. THe fundraising team is hosting its annual bridge day at Boxgrove Village Hall, on Friday, February 28, from 10am to 3.30pm. A MEMBER of staff from Covers Timber and Builders Merchants in Chichester has raised £380 for charity after taking part in the Alzheimer’s charity memory walk.

Frankie Crozier, along with her daughter, Donna Hopkins, took on the 7.5km challenge in memory of her mum, Dusty Carrick, who died of Alzheimer’s in February, 2019.

As a tribute to her mother, Frankie and Donna took part under the team name ‘Dusty’s Divas’.

Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity.

THe charity campaigns for change, funds research to find a cure and supports people living with dementia.

Frankie said: "I have been doing the walk for several years as Dusty’s Divas in

tribute to my mum who passed away in February after a nine-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

"I raised £190 and Covers kindly matched the amount for me, taking the total to £380.

"THe walk was in very tough conditions, but we ploughed on. Everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves."

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Someone develops it every three minutes and there’s currently no cure.

LINE DANCERS in Chichester have completed and passed their bronze medal through the International Dance Teachers Association.

Sue Wilkinson, from Southsea, has been a qualified dance teacher with the association for more than 30 years and started teaching line dancing 25 years ago in Bracknell, Berkshire.

Twenty two of her students at her classes in Chichester successfully passed their bronze medals.

Sue said: "Everyone did really well and I am incredibly proud of them all.

"I'm sure when they walked

through the door to join a social class none of them ever thought they would be doing a medal exam.

"It is optional and the main aim of our class is to have fun and get some exercise and also challenge ourselves mentally to remember all the steps.

"Everyone was so excited to get their medals and they are already talking about doing their silver."

For the silver medal, students will have to do three dances.

THE Chichester branch of the Historical Association's annual meeting last month was a cause for great celebration on several counts. It marked the 90th year of the branch's existence and witnessed talks reflecting on the changing nature of historical studies over the past 50 years.

Two of these were given by members of the branch who both stand eligible to be jubilee fellows of the association: Dr Andrew Foster, branch president, and Mr Chris Corin, a committee member.

Dr Foster has actually been a member of the branch since 1978, and thus for 41 years, during which time he has served on the committee, as chairman, and now as president. He first joined as a sixth-form student in 1967.

Between them, Dr Foster and Mr Corin have served as teachers of history in secondary schools and higher education, taken part in curriculum development, acted as consultants, written textbooks for A-level students, and mingled with ‘the great and the good’ in our profession.

As in previous years, Dr Foster commended the branch for putting together a wide-ranging programme of talks over the year, hosting the annual sixth form debating contest, supporting an active reading group, and providing an hospitable environment for distinguished visiting speakers, drawn from universities across the nation.

He concluded that ‘our gatherings are what future historians will see as the life-blood of our rich provincial cultural life – and long may we be treasured’.

Mrs Pam Dignum gave a talk about an old Icelandic saga and Mr James McInnes concluded celebrations with aspects of the history of the branch since its foundation in 1929, noting that members happily still celebrate the life of their most distinguished historian, Professor John Fines, one-time national president of the association, in an annual memorial lecture.

THe couple's new addition to their existing family of three (with daughter Betty) was born at St Richard's Hospital in the city centre two weeks early at 8.02pm, weighing 7lbs 1.5 ounce.

Carla said: "Louie was a lovely New Year’s Day surprise to us as was born two weeks early; what a great birthday to have and to be a new baby born on the first day of a new decade.

"THe staff at St Richards Hospital were great and would like to say a big thank you to the team who looked after us."

Mystery warrior: The North Bersted man

These attachment pieces would have connected the openwork crest to the helmet WITH JUST a week to go until the launch of our exciting new exhibition Mystery Warrior: THe North Bersted Man, we wanted to whet your appetite with a little look at the background of the burial, which was first discovered in 2008 by THames Valley Archaeological Services Ltd (TVAS).

TVAS had been commissioned to undertake excavations in advance of the construction of Berkeley Homes’ new community, called Bersted Park, North Bersted. THese excavations had revealed interesting evidence highlighting occupation of the site from the later Bronze Age to the Roman period. THe most gripping discovery at the site, however, was the grave of the most elaborately equipped Iron Age Warrior discovered in England, who is thought to have died at around the

time of Caesar’s Gallic Wars, in circa 50s BC. THe burial was not part of a larger cemetery, but was instead an isolated grave. THe deceased was a mature male, aged over 45. THe grave contained a range of artefacts including a sword, shield and a spearhead. In addition, it also contained a helmet customised with beautiful openwork crests, which make it unique worldwide. Locally made jars produced in the style of pottery from Normandy had been placed at his head, while broken bowls of local origin, but also modelled on bowls from the continent had been placed at his feet, possibly as part of a toast or connected to a funeral feast.

‘ladder type’. THe ladders gave strength to the scabbard. It overlay the legs of the deceased, but interestingly had been bent almost double prior to deposition. It is thought to have been a deliberate symbolic act of destruction.

THe winged or butterfly-shaped bronze shield boss had been made from one piece of bronze sheet. It has a distinctive coned point in the middle. THis was not just for decoration and show, but could also make a wound that rendered someone susceptible to infection. Although there is no evidence from the grave of the structure of the shield, Iron Age shields like this one were usually either oval or slightly hour glass in form. THe shield had been placed at the hip of the individual, on top of other grave items. It, too, shows signs of damage, suggesting the shield had been deliberately dismantled prior to burial.

THe discovery of an Iron Age helmet in Britain is incredibly rare. It is a Coolus type. Similar helmets are found throughout Gaul, but are rarely found in the Iberian Peninsula, encompassing Spain and Portugal, where the Roman army is known to have been very active during the late Iron Age. THis tells us that it is unlikely the helmet was of Roman origin. THe example at North Bersted had been modified to allow the addition of two stunning openwork crests. THe openwork crests are of a highly complex Celtic design using geometric shapes. It probably also originally carried an organic crest or plume.

Although preservation of the skeleton was poor, evidence suggests he survived a period of disease or malnutrition during childhood, as well as anaemia during his

His bones show us that he led a very physical and active lifestyle. His leg bones exhibited evidence of strong muscle and ligament attachment, indicating that he may have been a horse rider. THere were also marked differences in the size of the bones of his left and right forearms.

His right arm was significantly larger, suggesting a preference for his right arm for repetitive or heavy exercise, such as holding and controlling a heavy sword.

Most interestingly, the vertebra of his upper neck showed signs of significant wear, perhaps caused by the helmet over time.

Isotope analysis was undertaken on the individual to try to determine where he may have grown up. Oxygen and carbon isotope values were analysed and revealed that the region in which he could have grown up is quite large, encompassing eastern England and eastern France.

So, just who was this mystery warrior?

VCD Athletic tomorrow.

Chi were 3-0 victors over VCD at Oakwood on the first Tuesday of the year.

THe two sides meet again at Oaklands Park with Chichester sitting 15th in the table and VCD five points ahead in eighth place.

VCD, however, have played four matches more as City continue to play catch-up after their FA Cup adventure earlier in the campaign.

Coach Darin Killpartrick wants Chi to take much of last Saturday's performance into the VCD game.

Although ten-man Chi had to settle for a draw as their run of home games kicked off with a 1-1

draw against Whitstable Town, Killpartrick and fellow coach Danny Potter were satisfied with the way they played.

He told THe Post: "We played really well last weekend and we were extremely pleased with the process last week.

"THe outcome was not what I felt we deserved but that it is what you are going to get with a young team.

"THey have made the same mistakes in two consecutive games but I accept it because it is a young team.

"However, they need to learn a little bit quicker and understand how to see games out a bit better.

"It is just down to gamemanagement.

"THey just have to see matches out with a little bit more maturity.

Lloyd Rowlatt put Chi ahead after Iordache Gicu's cross from the right came to him in the 38th minute and he placed his shot past keeper Daniel Eason.

Keeper Eason had already palmed a Ryan Davidson header on to the bar by that point after Chi dominated the first-half chances.

Davidson was sent off in the 90th minute for a reckless tackle in midfield.

Chichester were indebted to keeper Mowthorpe for securing a point after his late one-on-one save denied substitute Marcus Elliott when he was clean through.

Davidson is suspended for VCD's visit tomorrow.

Chichester are home again on Tuesday when East Grinstead Town visit Oaklands.

THe Wasps are bottom of the table but recently changed managers with Leigh Dynan taking charge after Matt Longhurst's departure.

Dynan has made a swarm of signings at East Court to bolster the squad as they bid to scramble their way to safety.

TRISH KIDD and Ben Todd claimed the 'Sandy Carter' Mixed Pairs knockout title.

THe new year saw a big turnout of 64 players – just four short of the record set six years ago – compete in the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League competition at the Newtown Social Club.

Round one saw 180s from Karl Wingate (Lamb Nomads) and Richard Pennells (Richmond Resurrected), but only Pennells would get through to round two.

THe first semi-final pitched Pennells and his partner, Tracey King, against Summer League Mixed Pairs champions Hayley and Tony Phillips (Hunston Hares).

Despite Pennells having hit his second 180 in the previous round, Phillips was also on form after having hit a 156 out-shot during the night, and his scoring was enough to help get them reach the final.

THe second semi-final pitched the reigning champions, Rachel and

Adam Hall (Aldingbourne Mavericks), against Kidd and Todd (Railway Sleepers) but it did not go well for the defenders of the crown and they lost 2-0 to crash out.

THe first leg of the final saw a ton and 140 each from Tony Phillips and Kidd, but it was Todd who hit the double first.

Leg 2 saw Tony Phillips hit the only ton and the double to take the match to 1-1.

Leg 3 saw a ton from Hayley Phillips and a 140 from Tony Phillips, but they missed their doubles, giving Kidd a shot at double top for a 120 out-shot, and eventually Todd took the leg.

Leg 4 saw the bigger scores from the Phillips duo but Tony missed double top for a 113 out-shot. Todd hit 137 straight after to leave a finish for Kidd, and she got the chance, needing all three darts, but she hit the finish, taking the leg and the match 3-1, and the 'Sandy Carter' Mixed Pairs title in the process.

Pagham win dedicated to Kew NEW signing Callum Chalmers got a double as Pagham gave their relegation fight a boost with a 3-1 win over Alfold.

Jordan Clark gave the Lions a 31st-minute lead and Chalmers - who joined from Arundel - struck in the 56th minute and then added a second eight minutes later.

Tom Bold replied with a long-range freekick.

Lions boss Kerry Hardwell dedicated the win to former manager and club legend Dave Kew, who died recently.

Hardwell said: "THree points with a performance to match was what we asked of the boys against Alfold and they certainly gave us that.

"It’s a platform for us to build on moving forward.

"We will enjoy the win and be back on the training pitch this week continuing to try and improve throughout."

He added: "It was great to see new signing Callum Chalmers hit the ground running with two goals.

"I’d like to dedicate the three points to the late Dave Kew and family who sadly lost his life last week. As a Pagham boy myself, I know he falls under the bracket as a club

legend. " A minute's silence was held before the game in memory of the manager who guided the side to league and cup successes in the late eighties.

Pearce said: "We know we have to keep quiet with officials but sometimes emotions boil over.

"Both lads have apologised and we have accepted that.

"THey are good lads but sometimes in the heat of the moment these things do happen and we have to learn from it and try not to let our emotions get the better of us.

"THey are young, just 18 years old and still learning, so I am not going to go overboard on two lads who are playing week in, week out.

"It was a harsh red for Joe but, with the letter of the law now, every referee is under so much scrutiny."

He added: "We are going all right again, we are holding our own with a very young side and all still learning."

Selsey's midweek trip to Billingshurst in SCFL division one was postponed.

Bosham are at home to TD Shipley tomorrow in division two (2pm KO).

Bosham lost 1-0 last Saturday to Worthing Town after Andy Brown had a penalty saved.

Sportinbrief  Athletics KARI MACK was first female home in the Dark Moors 10-miler.

Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners’ Mack started at 6.30pm on Saturday, January 11, in the night race around the Moors Valley Country Park.

Racing in the dark makes it extra challenging for the runners, especially when off-road in the mud, wind and rain.

Mack had obviously been eating her carrots over Christmas as she stormed through to finish as the first female in one hour nine minutes.

At the Swanage 10k were David Bone, birthday boy Lee Hayward and Alan Haskell.

THe hilly course, mixed with the winds, made it tough for a personal best.

Nonetheless, in Bone’s first race for the club, he finished in a respectable time of 41mins 19secs. Hayward put the cherry on his birthday with a PB in 56.16.

Haskell rounded off some solid times in Swanage with a 1:03.

 Rugby SKIPPER Josh Burgess says Bognor must improve ahead of their next game.

THe warning came despite their 5434 at Ellingham and Ringwood in Hampshire Premier.

Bognor are fourth in the table after a tenth win of the campaign.

But they have a blank Saturday in the league tomorrow before they host Millbrook at Hampshire Avenue the following weekend.

Burgess was disappointed Bognor did not keep up the momentum which saw them power ahead in the first 40 minutes.

Paddy Burnett (three), Lee Balchin (two) Shane Stevens, Freddie Burgess and Jeremy Newton got the tries.

Newton also slotted over the rest of the points off the tee.

Josh Burgess said: “We got off to a great start.

“We scored with some great link-up play in the wide channels while our scrums and lineouts were strong.

“But in the second half we fell asleep and let Ellingham get back into the game.

“We were not happy with our performance in the second half and there is a lot of work to do before our next game.”

Bognor work like trojans at festival BOGNOR RFC Colts Academy took on the might of Havant and Trojans Colts in a festival of rugby and returned with a draw and defeat.

Bognor played Havant first and a powerful start from the hosts saw them score out wide.

Bognor reacted with Jack Trenham regaining the ball at the restart. Mathew Norrell and Benjamin Barker ran hard to get over the gain line. Half backs Alfie Spurle and Woody Gilbert-Jones moved the ball wide to James Billingham, who dummied and crashed over.

Bognor’s set-piece was put under huge pressure and an inability to clear their lines saw Havant’s backs run a well-drilled move which saw their fullback score out wide.

Hooker Ethan Teasdale organised his lineout with Owen THomas ruling the airways.

Charlie Weller ran a hard line and George Orchard took it on before Harry Smith secured possession and Teasdale crashed over.

Bognor attacked from the kick off led by a typical dummy and sprint from Jamie Foote and Owen Henton support. Bognor camped on Havant’s line for five minutes but just could not score in a 10-10 draw.

An explosive start against Trojans saw centre Tyrone Masaki wriggle free and scorch

in under the posts from half way.

Bognor matched Trojans upfront with Charlie Jays and Ben Brandon competing at the breakdown. Trojans had more possession but the three-and-a-half sets of twins – Oscar and Harvey Henson, Stanley and Arthur Wright, Sam and Jacob Towler and Ben Tilley all defended as if their lives depended on it.

Mac Davis had a solid debut on the wing and Josh Galea ran hard all game.

Pressure told and despite a try-saving tackle from fullback Dylan Collier, Trojans found a way through the green wall to score.

With time running out, Bognor ran from deep but a Trojans centre intercepted to score with the last play of the game for a 10-5 win.

THis week, Bognor Greens travel to Uckfield for Sussex Cup second round.

Chichester leave it late before they make it three of a kind with victory CHICHESTER made it a hat-trick of wins for the first time in 11 months with a 23-22 victory over London Cornish.

Having secured their first away win of the season the previous week, with a late Tom Blewitt penalty, there was much optimism among the Chichester faithful that the team could secure three consecutive wins.

Blues made five changes to the side that beat KCS. Zac Conoly and Nick Blount came into the pack, Josh Goodwin and Matt McLagan returned in the backs and Shaun Baker was on the bench.

Chichester, playing down the slope, conceded a penalty inside three minutes but it fell short.

Five minutes later Tom Blewitt stroked home a penalty for the first score of the game.

Cornish turned up the wick and spent the next 12 minutes probing Chi's defence. Chichester conceded a number of penalties but held out.

A try-saving tackle by Ben Deavall and a couple of wayward final passes delayed Cornish opening their account. Finally, Blues were caught offside and the visitors levelled with a 21st-minute penalty.

Two minutes later Cornish stole the ball at a

lineout and scored an unconverted try through the right winger. Another Blewitt penalty on 26 minutes made it 6-8. From the restart, Cornish's outside centre outstripped the Blues’ defence to go over for a converted try.

Blues mounted their first sustained attack which resulted in a yellow card for the visitors but, despite the man advantage, Chichester could not breach the well organised Cornish defence.

THe visitors started the second half strongly but against the run of play a Chichester break on 51 minutes was stopped illegally and the referee produced another yellow card. Once again Blewitt slotted the penalty to reduce the deficit (9-15).

Four minutes later Blues lost a man to the sin bin.

Cornish kicked for touch and from the lineout drove over for their third try, which was converted.

THis seemed to spur Chichester on and put the visitors under sustained pressure.

Great work from Joe Woods, Zac Conoly and Martin O’Callaghan saw Blues cross the line twice only for the ball to be held up.

minutes. THe Chi pack crossed the line for a third time and Ben Polhill touched down. Blewitt converted to close the gap to 22-16 to Cornish with five minutes left.

In a dramatic finale, prop Conoly won a Blues lineout and his pass found Woods in space. He made 15 metres before passing to Harry Seaman, whose offload found Tyrese Makasi on the touchline. THe young hooker beat two defenders to touch down in Vultures Corner. Blewitt converted a difficult kick to put Chi 23-22 up with two minutes left to play.

Despite a couple of heart-stopping moments, Chichester closed the match out for their ninth victory of the season and four points.

Man of the match was Martin O’Callaghan for an excellent performance as stand-in No.8.

Chichester are in Kent against Westcombe Park (2pm KO) tomorrow. THe coach leaves Oaklands Park at 10.30am for any supporters wishing to travel with the team.

JACK PEARCE admits tomorrow's home clash with high-flying Folkestone Invicta is a must-win for both sides.

THe Bognor manager is not downplaying the significance of the Nyewood Lane showdown for two sides with promotion aspirations from BetVictor Premier.

Rocks reignited their playoff hopes with a 2-1 win at Leatherhead last weekend, while Folkestone were knocked off the top of the table after they drew 1-1 at home to Haringey Borough and closest rivals Worthing mashed up Merstham 6-1 at Woodside Road.

Rocks and Folkestone had been due to meet in Kent on Tuesday night in the Velocity Trophy (League Cup) but that was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Invicta have slipped two points behind Worthing, while Rocks are in tenth but just six points from the last play-off place.

Pearce said: "It is obviously a big game for us.

"It is one of those games where it is vital for both clubs.

"If we want to stay in contact with the play-offs, then we need three points.

"If they want to continue being up the league, then they need the three points.

"I am sure it will be an entertaining game for those who attend."

Last Saturday's win at the Tanners was a timely boost after back-to-back defeats.

Rocks handed a debut to Matt Casey, who has joined the club on a youth loan from Portsmouth for a month.

THe 6ft 6in defender impressed on his opening appearance, having not even trained with his team-mates before being thrown straight in.

Pearce said: "He played very well in his first game and we shall have another look at him tomorrow and see where we go from there.

"He's 6ft 6in but sometimes the tallest players are not the best headers of the ball. Sometimes the tallest people are much better on the ground than what people give them credit for.

"To be fair to him, he is very accomplished on the floor but he can also head the ball, so he's been beneficial already.

"If we can build on that performance, that would be good."

Ashton Leigh remains on the injury list while there are unlikely to be any more new arrivals.

THe Velocity Trophy game with Folkestone has been rearranged for next Tuesday.

Blake salutes battling Bognor By: Jordan Evans sport@sussexpost.co.uk ROBBIE BLAKE praised his players after a hard-fought 2-1 win away at play-off pushing Leatherhead on Saturday.

A week after losing 2-1 at home to Margate in stoppage time, the Rocks turned the tables to sink their hosts late on and record a first win in three matches.

THe Tanners had the better form with four wins in their last six games compared to the Rocks' three in the same period.

Leatherhead should have taken the lead inside the first five minutes when Travis Gregory’s corner was nodded over by Melford Simpson.

Rocks responded with a swift counter but Dan Smith's shot was straight at Tanners keeper Zaki Oualah.

THe Rocks took the lead after 11 minutes from another quick counter-attack when Doug Tuck found Bradley Lethbridge unmarked at the back post and he neatly cut inside and finished low into the bottom left corner past the despairing Oualah.

THe Tanners had another chance to equalise when Gregory’s cross found Simpson but his header just went over the crossbar on 14 minutes.

THe Rocks thought they had doubled their lead on 20 minutes when Mason Walsh picked out top scorer Smith to head in despite the best efforts by Oualah but the linesman

spoiled the celebrations as he indicated Walsh was offside.

THe Tanners equalised when top scorer Charlie Hester-Cook capitalised on the Rocks failing to clear and he fired low beyond keeper Amadou Tangara.

THe hosts had chances to take all three points but failed to beat keeper Tangara with efforts from Will Seager, Zac Robinson and Craig McGee all at the keeper or wide.

Bognor grabbed the win when on-loan Portsmouth defender Harry Kavanagh’s cross found Tommy Leigh and he nodded in at the far post to send the 112 Bognor fans into delirium.

Coach Blake said: "It's nice to be on the winning end of the scoreline. I am really pleased because the lads worked so hard.

"THey showed great effort and determination, stuck at it, and we got the winner in the end."

IT IS a big game tomorrow at home against Folkestone and both sides need the win.

With Worthing doing so well, Folkestone really need to win it to stay at the top. We, of course, need victory to break our way into those play-off positions, so there is a lot at stake.

We go into the game after the late drama at Leatherhead.

We got the winning goal right at the end, which was really nice, especially after the Margate loss the week before.

It looked like it would be a draw - and they might even have beaten us - but we got the win in the end with a header from Tommy Leigh.

Some people said they did not think he had a great game but I think he is a real find for us. He and his brother are a good pairing when they are on the pitch together, so it will be good to see Ashton fit again.

It was also a great cross from Harry Kavanagh, who has been a really good loan signing for Rocks from Pompey.

He gets the crosses in as he likes to get forward.

Mason Walsh came off at half-time, which was a concern, but I hope that was just a knock and not another injury.

It was a good match. It was very lively in the first half, died down in the second but then picked up again. Both teams really wanted to win it and we got the all-important goal.

It was a crucial win as it was a double over Leatherhead, too.

THere are still quite a few matches to go and points to be won to get us in a play-off position.

I am still optimistic but there is work to do.

It was a good following from the Rocks fans. And they enjoyed it behind the goal after the winner.

I was also going to Folkestone on Tuesday evening for the Velocity Trophy but that game

was postponed.

It does not help our momentum after coming off a win at Leatherhead to have a match called off.

But at least it does give the team a rest for such a big game.

It may be a blessing in disguise as it means there is no risk of picking up any more injuries.

Injuries can throw you off when you are preparing for such an important match.

I booked an afternoon off work but found out at 2.30pm it was postponed. I had feared it would be with the weather overnight and the likelihood it would get worse.

It had been rescheduled already and I wonder if it gets called off again whether the clubs would come to some agreement and just scratch it.

It's just the League Cup, which used to be the old AC Delco Cup, which we won once in 1987.

We had not entered it in the past few years because there are so many fixtures.

I am surprised they have not regionalised it so clubs do not have to travel so far.

As it stands, it could be anyone in your division and, apparently, the next round would be Basildon United away.

I don't think we have played them before but that is a long old way if we were to carry on.

I am sure Jack and Robbie will play their strongest team tomorrow as all the focus is on the league now, although we are still in the County Cup, too.

We are still awaiting our opponents in the Senior Cup as we bid to defend our title.

THe match between Burgess Hill and Brighton and Hove Albion was postponed for a third time on Tuesday night.

I expect when that game does get played it will be Brighton who go through and we shall be playing them in the next round.
