Anger as cafe gets go-ahead

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS have reacted with anger after councillors gave the green light for a cafe to open in a residential area in the heart of the city.

THe cafe, known as THe Boston Tea Party, will operate from 7am until 7.30pm seven days a week.

THe cafe is part of a chain of restaurants of which there are 19 throughout the country.

It will open at a Grade II-listed building called THe Corn Exchange in Baffins Lane.

It was previously used as offices for a solicitors firm but has been vacant since September 2014.

Chichester City Council strongly objected to the plans - but Chichester

District Council's planning officers recommended that the committee approved it.

Keith Mitchelson is the chairman of the Newtown Residents Association and spearheaded the campaign.

He said: "We are extremely disappointed with the decision because we thought our objections were valid and for the best for all citizens in Chichester, not just residents of the Pallants and

Newtown.

"We fear for the future of a major chain with 150 cafes opening seven days a week for 12 hours a day.

"THis will materially affect the quality of life of the residents and will have a major affect on the environmental issues.

"It's mainly about noise, odour and vehicles delivering."

Opportunities for young people rise

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester is to offer more degree apprenticeships after being accepted onto the government register of approved organisations.

THe university has been listed on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP) after meeting an application that considered its ability to deliver high-quality training.

Only approved organisations which meet the RoATP criteria, which is assessed on capability, due diligence and financial health, will be able to deliver apprenticeships from Monday, May 1.

Sandra Coley, head of employer engagement at the university, said: “We are delighted to have been accepted as a main provider on the RoATP. “THe register gives employers a level of assurance that the provider they are using has the capacity and capability to deliver high quality apprenticeship training.”

THe University of Chichester delivers two apprenticeships: the digital and technology solutions professional and chartered manager.

THe first cohort of digital and technology solutions professional apprentices began in September last year and both apprentices and employers are already seeing the benefits of developing staff.

Red River Software MD Simon Pringle said: “We were suffering from the usual

skills shortage and wanted to be able to train people our own way.

"Via this route, we get to do that and the apprentices quickly become very talented.

“For us, there hasn’t been a time when they haven’t been working on a commercial project, which is very beneficial to the company and, in the digital sector, this is the most positive step towards addressing the skills shortage in my memory.”

SSE apprentice Baramee THummatewin said he was looking forward to studying in higher education but the cost was too high.

He added: “Many industries look for people with experience, an invaluable asset that can only be achieved by working in the industry.

“I decided that the best choice for getting experience and still being able to study in higher education is a degree apprenticeship - they provide the best of both worlds.”

Similarly, apprentice James SedenSmith, of Red River Software, was set on going to university but decided to apply when he heard about the degree apprenticeship.

He said: “Four years in industry, alongside a degree, which is an amazing opportunity and would give me a huge advantage against my peers when applying for future jobs.”

Chris takes on marathon for mental health

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CHRIS HARAMIS knows the struggles that people with mental health difficulties face every day.

So in a bid to raise money to support them, he is preparing to face the unknown by pounding the streets of the capital and taking part in this year's London Marathon.

Chris, 34, from Chichester, works for the mental health charity Mind.

He wants to clear the negative stigma associated with mental health.

Patients face difficulties every day as they constantly fear being judged or treated differently.

Chris is running in aid of Heads Together, which is the charity spearheaded by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

THe Heads Together campaign aims to end the stigma surrounding mental health. Its members hope to build on work that is already being done throughout the country to support people and their families through their illnesses.

Chris acknowledged the difficulties he was about to face with the marathon.

He said: "I haven't done any running since PE at school.

"THis is quite a big undertaking for me. But it's something that I felt I wanted to do.

"It's a personal achievement as much as it is about raising money for a really important cause.

"More and more we are getting less and less money coming down from the government.

"We are having to do more for people who are struggling.

"So any money I can raise is very important.

University at popular site ENVIRONMENT experts have been studying the erosion and deposition at East Head near West Wittering.

East Head is a significantly dynamic coastal feature at the western side of the mouth to Chichester Harbour.

It has a range of habitats that support a wide range of flora, as well as providing winter nesting areas for birds. THe National Trust has to manage the competing pressures of public access and supporting the area’s status as a Site of Specific Scientific Interest.

Experts at Southampton Solent University have been looking into it.

Dr Paul Wright, head of environment and geography studies at the university, said: “As part of an adaptive management strategy for coastal defence it is important to have up to date and regular data on changes to the landscape."

Using a Sensefly eBee UAV drone with an onboard camera, the team have been able to collect more than 400 images in just three hours.

Initial data collected shows that the main point of access to the site - THe Hinge, in the very south - is susceptible to overwashing at higher tides; saltmarsh habitats on the eastern side of the site show rillerosion; and there are many desire lines (well-trodden paths created by visitors to the site).

“THis survey allows the area’s National Trust’s Countryside team to decide upon their strategy for boardwalk replacement and path management,” added Dr Wright.

"It's becoming more okay to talk about mental health issues. We are seeing more people pick up the phone to talk about things.

"But I don't want to get to the point where we have to turn people away because we don't have enough money.

"People are talking about mental health more, in a positive way."

Chris, who has so far raised around £1,000 for the charity, has been out on long runs preparing for the marathon which takes place on Sunday, April 23.

"THe training is going pretty well," he said.

"I feel confident that if I don't get injured I will make it round in a fairly good time.

"THe biggest thing has been the time it's taken away from my family. I have got young children. On a Sunday I will go for a run and it will take me three and a half hours.

"So it impacts on the weekend and the family life.

"But if I want to do something, I want to do it properly."

Now, he is looking ahead to the big day with excitement.

"I am looking forward to it," he said.

"Hopefully, I will get a good night's sleep and lots of rest.

"I am looking forward to running with other people as at the moment I am always running on my own.

"From what I have heard, there isn't any stretch of the 26 miles that isn't covered by people watching.

"THe entire way there are streams of people and supporters.

"I am looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying running round some of the sights of London. It is quite exciting."

Students' pride at Home Show STUDENTS at Chichester College have designed the interiors of the show homes at this year's Ideal Home Show at Olympia in London.

Around 250,000 people will see their work before the show closes on Sunday, April 9.

THe Property Ladder Apartments, sponsored by Barclays and designed by students studying for the Architecture and Interior Level 3 Diploma, are enclosed in a small tower block and represent different life stages, from first-time buyers to a downsizing couple in retirement.

Meanwhile a team from the Art and Design Extended Diploma course has created the interiors for the 21st Century Cottage, which has been designed for a London family who are

escaping to the country.

Shelagh Legrave, Chichester College Principal, said: "I was absolutely astounded by the standard of design throughout both the show home properties.

"THe work that our art and design students have created is awe-inspiring and it makes me enormously proud.

"It is even more pleasing to see the college represented throughout the homes, with furniture and other items that have been made by our students on show."

It’s the first time in the show’s history that the show homes have been designed by college students.

Emily Steele, 17, said: “It has been a new experience and it has been challenging – but I love a challenge."

Pavements are to improve across the city WEST SUSSEX Highways has named the next batch of streets to benefit from its Even Better Pavements programme.

It is investing £3m in the 2017/18 financial year.

THat's on top of the £2m spent last year – across six towns in the county.

THe programme is designed to improve pavements and footways most used by vulnerable residents, both old and young.

It is hoped it will protect people from slips, trips and falls.

Further locations will be announced later this year.

Roads included in Chichester are Florence Road, Kingsham Road, Spitalfield Lane, College Lane, Summersdale Road, Winterbourne Road, Parchment Street to Orchard Street, Westgate and Sherborne Road.

County council cabinet member for highways and transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “We prioritised pavements and footways which serve clinics, hospitals, areas with high footfall and schools.

“THis is after many months of inspections and assessments to decide which streets get included in the programme for a second year.

“We made a great start last year and are keen to build on that work.”

THe programme is subject to change, dependent on weather and other factors.

Big step for plans to build hospice

BY KEVIN SMITH kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk A MAJOR milestone has been reached in the dream to build a new St Wilfrid's Hospice in Bosham.

Delighted fundraisers have brought in 80 per cent of the £15.5m the modern care facility will cost.

THe money has flowed in from supporters since the hospice's Dreambuilding project was launched about 18 months ago.

THis has enabled the hospice's bosses to call in the builders to start work on the chosen site in Walton Lane.

Marcia Nguyen, of the hospice's fundraising team, told members of the public at a meeting in North Bersted the good news on Tuesday.

She said: "We set our target to raise 80 per cent by the end of March and we have just done it.

"THe land has been cleared and Keir will come in and start building the hospice.

"THat will begin this June. THe new hospice should open in January, 2019, with the administrative staff moving in during December, 2018.

"THe new site in Bosham will have 18 beds. It's not that much bigger but there is more bedspace and more space for the day hospice so patients can drop in.

"THere will be bigger areas for staff so they can go out and serve the community better.

"We want to be able to expand our

services both at the hospice and in the community.

"We did look at extending our present hospice but it was just not an option in the long-term."

THe new St Wilfrid's will enable its role in its catchment area from Emsworth to Arundel and south of the South Downs to be expanded.

THe current building in Grosvenor Road opened 30 years ago and has 14 beds and serves a further 240 patients in the community.

But the number of referrals has risen from 928 in 2014/15 to more than 1,000 in the current financial year which is about to end.

"THe need in the community is constantly increasing," said Marcia.

"We try to go out of our way to meet our patients' individual needs. We focus on little things - the flowers, the pets."

But she said the need for fundraising was also continuous.

THe final millions were still required to reach the Dreambuilding target of £15.5m as well as the hospice's daily running costs.

Meanwhile, councillors at Chichester District Council's planning committee gave the green light for alterations to the original application at its meeting on Wednesday.

Councillors approved the changes which include building another ward kitchen, extending the cafe, altering the layout of the car park, and making external changes to enable refuse trucks to access the hospice without causing any damage to the building.

Deliveroo rides into the city bringing more than 50 jobs

Funny fiction from Chichester lecturer to support charity CREATIVE Writing lecturer Dave Swann from the University of Chichester was proud to have his work included in a new collection of short stories Funny Bone: Flashing for Comic Relief.

Compiled by international short story press Flash, the collection boasts 60 stories of no more than 360 words by 60 different authors.

Dave was humbled to have his work included alongside that of authors from around the world including writers from Canada and the USA, especially considering that the profits would be going to charity.

He said: "It's for a really great cause."

Dave, who has won the prestigious Bridport Award eight times for his flash fiction, submitted his story SOS for the collection. Each piece in the book is comedic in some way and SOS recounts Dave's own experience of a 500 mile road trip in Scandinavia with a driver he struggled to keep awake.

It is not only the work of Comic Relief that Dave is pleased to be helping.

He said: "I really admire people who have the energy to run small presses like Flash. It's a great challenge and commitment."

THE ON-DEMAND food delivery service Deliveroo has officially launched in Chichester.

THe delivery service will create work opportunities for more than 50 riders in Chichester over the course of the first year.

THe firm aims to deliver food, which will be cooked, fresh to order and delivered from the restaurant kitchen to the customers’ door within 30 minutes.

More than 15 restaurants have signed up to the service so far including Wagamama, Muchos Nachos, Shake-ADelic, Prezzo and Harry’s Fish & Chips.

General manager of Deliveroo, Caroline Hazlehurst, said: “We’re extremely excited to be launching in Chichester.

"We’re looking forward to bringing some of the town’s delicious dishes straight from the hands of local chefs to customers’ doors.

New coroner's court opens

WEST Sussex’s first dedicated Coroner’s Court has opened.

THe new court will provide a better environment for people who attend an inquest.

THe new facility at Centenary House, Crawley, will now provide a single, newly refurbished location for all inquests in the county.

THere are two court rooms and a family room for relatives to have a quiet space.

THe court has been opened in response to an increasing workload of long and complex inquests and is suitable for the largest of inquests.

THe new court will eliminate the need to hire external premises giving greater flexibility of court time and it offers more appropriate facilities for bereaved families.

West Sussex's coroner's office presides over around 370 inquests per year out of the estimated 3,300 deaths reported to the coroner from across the county.

THe coroner is required to have reported to her all violent and unnatural deaths, those deaths where the cause is unknown and those who die in custody or otherwise in state detention within the West Sussex area.

THe coroner also investigates the deaths of West Sussex residents that occur abroad. Together with her team she investigates these deaths, authorises post mortems in certain cases, and liaises with bereaved families, police, doctors and funeral directors.

County council gets a grant to help introduce more people to the internet LIBRARIES have been granted £178,000 to fund innovative new projects to help residents use technology.

THe grant from Arts Council England will pay for equipment including tablets and laptops.

Library staff will use this new technology to introduce residents to digital reading and eLibrary services.

One aim of the project is to combat the loneliness experienced by one in four older people in the county. Staff will be able to demonstrate how online services, like social media, can reduce feelings of isolation.

Lesley Sim, who leads the Library Service at West Sussex County Council, said: “We are delighted that our bid has been successful.

“THis is an incredibly exciting, innovative project which will make a real difference to people's lives. I would like to express my thanks to the Arts Council England for the opportunity and we look forward to getting started.”

THe service will also offer help to jobseekers by introducing them to online job searching and assist people with disabilities by supporting them to use specialist apps that can help with everyday communication.

"We are right in the middle. THe problem is going to be the parking. THat whole road is packed with cars.

"It's about the amount of people. THey will probably be applying for an alcohol licence within six months.

"THey have to come past us to get to the car park.

"For anybody to come from that restaurant to go to the car park, they will have to pass our front door and they won't do so quietly.

"THere is going to be more footfall going past our front door. THat makes us very vulnerable. We are situated literally on the road."

THe agent acting on behalf of the applicant told the committee that the cafe would bring in 30 new jobs.

During the meeting, Cllr Pam Dignum also spoke against the application.

She said: "Residents and people using this area have been thinking for two years how usage of this large site will affect them.

"Local residents always have special knowledge and understanding of an area which together raises an important finger of caution.

Use of this historic building for a huge restaurant open every day of the

year for over 12 hours a day may not offend planning laws and could be a commercial success but probably at the expense of all the locals concerned.

"Its impact on a conservation area for many reasons would be great.

"We must keep a balance between commerce and quiet residents in mind.

"THe visual impact of large delivery vehicles stuck in narrow roads alongside old 18th century buildings is surely a warning of potential destruction of what makes Chichester special."

Cllr Richard Plowman, who is on the planning committee, said: "THere's no doubt about it that if a restaurant moves into this it will change fundamentally the building, particularly the inside.

"It is in a conservation area. It is very close to a residential area.

"My feeling is that we need to have another look at a use for this building.

"I believe that there will be noise and disruption for the local residents.

"It's a very important grade two listed building.

"In years to come, I think if we accept this application we will rue the day we did that."

But Cllr Janet Duncton said: "It's a marvellous city.

"It's a wonderful area and we do have a lot of restaurants.

"However, I am really concerned about planning here and now and what that will do or not do to this city of ours.

"On balance, I think that this is an acceptable application for this particular part of the town."

Six councillors voted for the application with four voting against and one abstaining.

Exhibition draws crowds at cathedral AN unusual and striking exhibition about the Holocaust is generating a powerful response from visitors to Chichester Cathedral.

Stations of the Holocaust, by the artist and priest Jean Lamb, is comprised of 14 artworks, which have been carved out of one large elm wood log, cast and then painted.

Jean is a professional artist and priest in the Church of England with over 30 years’ experience of making art.

THe exhibition is in the cathedral’s North Transept and is open daily with free entry until Monday, April 17.

Grant will allow church to provide toilets for first time

St George’s church in Donnington, a Grade I listed building, is set to benefit from a £10,000 National Churches Trust Community Grant.

THe money will help fund a small extension to introduce toilets and storage space, together with improved level access for people with disabilities, allowing the church to expand its community activities.

THe announcement has been backed

by BBC News broadcaster and Journalist Huw Edwards.

He is the vice-president of the National Churches Trust. He said: “I'm delighted that the future of St George’s church, Donnington, is being secured by a National Churches Trust grant to fund much needed community facilities.”

THe Rev James Cooper, Donnington’s parish priest, said: “It is so good to have an organisation like the National Churches Trust to help care for our historic church heritage around the country. THe parish has supported the trust’s work for many years and now they have come to our aid when we need it most.

“THe installation of toilets, together with the improved access for people with disabilities, will make the building so much more inclusive and mean that it can be used more by the wider community.

“After more than 770 years of waiting it’s about time these facilities were provided!”

St George’s church, in a rural location in the old village of Donnington, was rebuilt in 1246 on the site of an earlier Saxon church.

Comic Relief is a hit at care homes

RESIDENTS and staff at a care home raised money for Red Nose Day. Marriott House and Lodge Care Home staff arrived at work and ‘wore something funny for money’.

THeir outfits included bright and mismatched clothes wigs and red noses.

Residents made some special cupcakes, took part in a raffle and played bingo.

More than £50 was raised, which will help people living incredibly tough lives in the UK and across Africa.

Sarah Harding, head of activities at Marriott House and Lodge Care Home, said: “It was a huge amount of fun and seeing everyone dressed and wearing red noses has made everyone laugh.

"We are glad to be able to do our bit to raise further awareness and money for the charity.”

Council to ensure taxi access for all ALL PHYSICALLY able taxi drivers in the Chichester district must continue to be trained in transporting wheelchair users, it has been decided.

Chichester councillors discussed the duty of taxi drivers at a general licensing committee meeting following the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency's decision to no longer provide wheelchair assessments for hackney carriages.

Previously the DVSA had stipulated that able-bodied taxi drivers must be trained to: • safely load and unload wheelchair in their vehicle • use the wheelchair brakes to secure and release it • fasten the seat belts or safety harness • secure any wheel belts or clamps fitted to their vehicle However, due to commitments in other areas the DVSA withdrew their involvement in assessing taxi drivers in January this year.

has been considering other organisations to assess local taxi drivers accordingly in the city and beyond.

THose at the meeting were resolute that these assessments would continue to be carried out despite the departure of the DVSA in the matter.

Giusj Lauro, a legal services officer for the council, explained why this was so important.

She said: "In relation to the Equality Act we must remind drivers that they are required to carry wheelchairs."

Others felt that this was also in the interest of the drivers themselves.

Laurence Foord, licensing manager for the council,

said: "THere is a growing demand in the private sector for wheelchair access."

Only taxi drivers that are physically fit enough to safely load wheelchair passengers into their vehicles would need to undergo the assessments.

THe vehicle in question would also have to be able to bear the weight of a wheelchair for its driver to be assessed.

University does its bit for charity A CHARITY which cares for children with life-threatening and terminal illnesses has been given a boost by the University of Chichester.

THe Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which operates across the county, received a cheque of more than £715. It follows donations made at the annual Christmas carol service in December.

THe charity provides home nursing care and emotional counselling for sick children on being discharged from hospital as well as financial support for families.

Diana Levantine, co-chairman and co-founder of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, said: “THe new range of available treatment means that unwell children now live longer, fulfilling lives.

“However, it remains difficult for the children and their families when they come home from hospital – this is where our nurses help by providing unique care.

“We don’t receive big grants so are reliant on our community and this money raised by the University of Chichester will go directly to our nurses and care team.”

THe Christmas carol service, which included classical singers and

orchestras of the university, is held at Chichester Cathedral each year to raise money for nearby good causes.

THe donations collected at the concert will go directly to the Snowdrop Trust’s care team and urgent financial support packages for the families of sick children.

On handing over the cheque, university vice-chancellor, Professor Clive Behagg, said: “I am delighted that we are able to support the outstanding work that the Sussex Snowdrop Trust provides to families in our community.

“It is fitting that the carol concert, which brings the university together with our nearby community, should be the event which raises crucial funds for an indispensable charity.”

` Sussex Police reassure residents A SENIOR police officer has urged Bognor Regis area residents to stay vigilant and united.

Assistant chief constable Laurence Taylor said Sussex Police remained alert to the threat of any terrorist attack after last week's fatal incident in London.

But he said the threat level had stayed the same.

"It has remained severe since 2014. THere is no current evidence of any specific threat to community safety in Sussex and policing across the country continues to operate as usual," he said.

"We urge the public to remain alert but not alarmed - our policing tactics and security measures are constantly reviewed and we, along with our partners, are working around the clock to keep our cities as safe. If you see anything suspicious, then let us know using the anti-terrorist hotline 0800 789 321 or 999 in an emergency.

"Acts of terrorism and hate crimes are committed by a small minority of people and are not representative of the public. THis is a time for us all to work closely together and unite against those who seek, through violence and extremism, to intimidate or cause fear."

Last week's terrorism in the capital, which cost the lives of four innocent people, came after Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne had told Bognor's annual electors' meeting how the police were working hard to prevent terrorism in the county.

TRAINED volunteers will help to keep Felpham's residents safe in emergencies.

THe 40-plus members of the Felpham Emergency Resilience Team have put the area in the forefront of coping with 999 situations.

Helpers will assist the emergency services whenever floods, power failures or extreme weather threaten to cause large-scale disruption. THeir efforts are intended to save lives and property and reduce inconvenience in situations such as the flash floods which caused extensive damage across Felpham in June, 2012.

Felpham parish councillor Gloria Moss has led the efforts to put together the team.

She said extensive training of the initial volunteers was entering its final months.

"All our volunteers will be able to help in any unpleasant adverse circumstances.

It shows the sense of community we have here that so many people are willing to give up some of their spare time to be able to help vulnerable people in emergencies," she said. "THere is a real sense of neighbourliness in what we are doing."

THe emergency resilience work of Cllr Mrs Moss in the past year follows her successful efforts to obtain a defibrillator for Felpham seafront and her desire to get more of the potential life-saving devices for elsewhere in the parish.

She began to advertise for volunteers for the resilience team about a year ago.

About 15-20 people attended her initial

meeting. Among them was Dave Smart, with extensive experience of attending numerous major rail accidents and subsequent inquiries.

He has since joined the parish council and supported Cllr Mrs Moss as the volunteers' training sessions began.

Further sessions have been held by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service at Bognor Regis fire station.

As well as providing helpers with skills, they have also supplied basic safety equipment such as high-visibility clothing and spades to help them with their tasks.

Cllr Mrs Moss said: "THe sessions cover basic first aid, communications and the use of radio systems, table top exercises as well as planning and preparation, communication, emergencies and what our volunteers can do.

"One of the sessions gives an overview of why the team is needed, how we prepare, the control and command structure, what we might attend and what our roles and responsibilities might be."

THe training has also included how the volunteers should identify and evaluate risk in the situations they attend and work to mitigate the dangers.

THe diverse nature of the volunteers meant training sessions had to be repeated at different times to ensure they all received the full information but Cllr Mrs Moss expected them to be finished in June. She hoped Felpham's example would be copied in other areas.

Calls to act on hazardous road junction

DANGEROUS potholes at a busy Rose Green junction could injury cyclists, it has been claimed.

THe series of holes, some easily big enough to accommodate a foot and up to two to three inches deep, pepper the surface of Nyetimber Lane at the crossroads with Rose Green Road and Gossamer Lane.

Edwin Jones, the area's branch secretary of the Cyclists' Touring Club, said: "THey are in the wrong positions for cyclists. It's quite a dangerous situation.

"When you set off from the lights on a bike, you want to keep away from the traffic but the potholes are right in the way of you doing that.

"When I want to turn right, which will take me straight over a pothole, so I have to steer a bit left and go round it. If you go straight through the lights before they change, you have got to be really careful to avoid the biggest of the potholes."

THe junction has replaced the roundabout at the eastern end of Gossamer Lane with Barrack Lane as the worst pitted surface in the area after the roundabout was resurfaced by West

Sussex County Council's contractors earlier this month.

Aldwick parish councillor Alan Smith said a complaint about the potholes had been made at a recent meeting by a resident. He believed a wheel of the man's mobility aid had become trapped in one of the potholes.

THis had caused the elderly pedestrian to lose his footing.

"THe road at the junction is in a terrible condition," said Cllr Smith. "It would be very easy for a cyclist going across there to hit one of the potholes.

"THere are about four of them. Two are very close to the entrance to the Co-op store where a lot of traffic goes in and out. It's hard to see the potholes when it's raining because they fill up with water.

"A cyclist might not realise they are there and it could tip them off.

"THat junction gets a lot of traffic and there are many heavy vehicles and buses every 20 minutes throughout the day which use it.

"THere were some potholes there a while back and, if they are not sealed properly, the rain just gets back in them."

A county council spokesman said on Wednesday: "We will be repairing three potholes in the area by the end of the week."

BUTLIN'S Skyline has sought to vary the premises licence which allows it to sell alcohol at its Bognor Regis resort.

THe holiday company wants to extend the licensed area of the current Echo Beach Bar within the site to enable it to become a fish and chip bar.

THe variation application states: "THe alterations are to extend the licensed area by removing walls into the void, foyer and Chick 'N' Kebab, relocating the toilets, removing the bar servery and stage and replacing with a kitchen and servery.

"All other plans, sale of alcohol hours, licensable activities and conditions to remain as existing."

THe deadline for comments to be made to Arun's licensing department about the proposal is April 17.

AN APPEAL for witnesses has been made by police in the past week after extensive damage was caused to Yapton Primary School.

THe fire started about 2am on March 11 in a bin next to the school in North End Road and caused extensive damage to the building and playground.

PC Andrea Beard said: "We believe the fire was started deliberately and appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact police quoting serial 19 of 09/03."

Final push for letters against homes plans

THe homeowners attended a special session held by their residents' association last THursday ahead of today's official deadline for comments from members of the public.

THe association has delivered leaflets from Pagham campaigners around the estate urging people to put their views

to Arun District Council about why the large-scale housing proposals for Sefter Road, Hook Lane and Summer Lane should be refused planning permission.

THe campaign had reached 1,665 letters by Tuesday. Of those, some 692 were against the Sefter Road scheme, 448 opposed the plans for Hook Lane and 526 have called for the Summer Lane proposals to be rejected.

Mike Nichols, the association's vicechairman, said it was important those who lived in West Meads added their voices to the protesters in Pagham.

He was among the ten or so Arun district residents who attended last

Wednesday's full meeting of Arun where councillors backed the inclusion of Pagham North and South and Chalcraft Lane, labelled West Bersted, as sites for strategic housing allocations.

For Pagham South, this is 800 and 400 in Pagham North. THe number for West Bersted is 2,500. Mr Nichols heckled councillors twice during their near twoand-a-half hour debate.

"It's a terrible decision. To put all those houses at Chalcraft Lane, on top of those planned for Pagham, is just unsustainable. I can't see where all these figures are coming from," he said.

"THere must be other areas where these homes can be built, other than top quality farmland. I just can't believe there are not other more suitable sites."

He said the sites were so close to each other their cumulative effect would be to clog up the area's roads and overload public services.

"A know a couple who moved to West Meads a while back and can't get on to the dentist here. THat is now. So what is it going to be like when all these houses are built? Where are the dentists and doctors going to come from? What about the hospitals? And how are people going to be able to travel around?

"THe roads are seriously congested now, especially around peak times.

Pagham's roads can't handle the traffic now - let alone with all these vehicles from the new homes.

"It's difficult to see how the existing roads can be improved."

f The meeting with Gavin Barwell, front left HOUSING minister Gavin Barwell has been told about residents' concerns over the number of large housing schemes for the Bognor Regis area.

Mr Barwell hosted a meeting at Westminster on Monday with Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb, Arun councillor Ricky Bower and John Charles, Arun District Council director of place Karl Roberts and chartered surveyor and Yapton resident Vicky Newman, to discuss the council's local plan land use blueprint.

Mrs Newman pointed out the challenge of finding locations for new homes when the Arun district was hemmed in by the South Downs National Park and the sea.

Mr Gibb said: "People in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton are very concerned

about the number of speculative house building applications that are being submitted by house building companies while the local plan is still to be confirmed.

"We all support plans for more houses to help ensure people are able to buy a home and to help young people onto the property ladder. We need to ensure that the location of those new homes is planned in a way that is sustainable and which ensures that grade A agricultural land is protected and strategic gaps are maintained."

Mr Barwell said national planning policy was designed to protect both strategic gaps and prime agricultural land. THe plan envisages 1,000 homes a year being built until 2031.

supporting St Wilfrid’s Hospice LOCAL company Parsons Son & Basley have been working hard this year to raise money in aid of the new site for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

The St Wilfrid’s Hospice Dreambuilding Project aims to create the perfect building to continue to provide excellent care for their patients. When the Hospice opened in 1987 they cared for 188 patients. Last year this had risen to an astonishing 928.

Therefore a bigger and more modern site is necessary. The estimated cost of this new building is £15.5m and St Wilfrid’s needs the support of the public more than ever to make this dream become a reality.

To show their support for the cause property experts Parsons Son & Basley are holding their own fundraising events.

On Thursday April 6 the team will be hosting a delicious bake sale at their Bognor Regis office in Lennox Street with all proceeds going to the Dreambuilding Project.

This will be followed a week later by an Easter raffle to add to the important funds.

Tickets cost only 50p and there are fabulous prizes up for grabs!

Sporting members of Parsons Son & Basley have also agreed to take

part in the annual St Wilfrid’s Moonlight Walk on May 6.

The walk takes place around Chichester and is always an exciting event. Team members Karen Challis and Helen Walden are among seven of the staff at Parsons Son & Basley taking part. Along with family and friends who have also signed up they are hoping to raise as much money as possible from sponsorship.

This is not the first time Parsons Son & Basley have been involved with the Moonlight Walk. In 2015 the team managed to raise £2,500 for the Hospice. And now with the Dreambuilding Project and a growing need for funds Karen believes it is more important than ever to do what they can for the charity.

She said “they are building a new hospice to support even more people and we must do our bit to help. We are all very excited to help raise as much as we can.”

CARING Bognor Regis student Johan KeijerPetch has taken centre stage at a national event at Wembley.

Johan, from THe Regis School, addressed 12,000 young people at the famous stadium as part of the countrywide We Day celebration.

He was invited to represent the organisation's India trip team after his story of social action of helping to build a school on the sub-continent inspired its leaders.

He followed singer Jessie J on stage to speak to the crowd and then took part in an interactive game of Would you rather? with the audience.

Johan was among a 23-strong contingent from THe Regis School invited to enjoy the day as a result of their social and local actions.

THe group of students has been actively involved in the past 12 months in campaigning and charity work. Among them was Katrice Maskell, 16, who was inspired by the special day. She said: "Change - that is what we gathered here today for.

"THe accomplishment and extraordinary changes caused by young people in the community. A very powerful message reached us all.

"Our voices mean something. THey will be heard if we speak up and the importance of us all in the social change process, as the future generation. If I have taken anything from today, it is the inspiration to do more, take part in more, help more. I want us all to unite.

Not just as the youth, not just as a country, but as an entire world.

"We are all members of one body and we must all do our part to make it the best world to live, grow and thrive in - to fight against discrimination and oppression, to purify the contamination and corruption that this world contains and make it an even better place to explore."

Shannon Noble, of Year 12, was one of them.

She said: "THe day was excellent. I am on the college's charity committee and this has definitely inspired me to do more and to think outside the box on what I can achieve."

` County elections countdown starts ELECTORAL procedures have got underway for the latest elections to West Sussex County Council.

THe timetable began on Monday with the publication of the formal notice of election. THis was followed on Tuesday by the opening of the notification period for candidates until April 4.

During this period, individuals who wish to stand for election must submit their completed nomination papers.

By 4pm on April 5, the statement of persons nominated will be published.

THese notices will set out who has been put forward to stand for election in each of the six county electoral divisions around Bognor Regis.

Voting will take place from 7am-10pm on May 4. Results will be declared the following day.

THe process is being managed by the electoral office at Arun District Council.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "Everyone eligible to vote in these elections will receive a poll card. If you are already registered to vote in this district, you don’t need to re-register and will receive your poll card by next Monday. If you still need to register, the simplest way is via the Government’s voter registration page at: https://www. gov.uk/register-to-vote THe poll card also explains how to change your voting arrangement.

THere is still time to apply to vote by post if you are away on polling day. THe deadline is 5pm on April 18.

Peter is silent to help charity day RED NOSE Day saw a Bognor Regis volunteer stay quiet for six hours.

Peter Williams, 75, staged his sponsored silence at the Laburnum Centre as part of its fundraising efforts for Comic Relief.

Popular Peter helps in its gym every day and raised about £130 for his uncharacteristic period without talking.

His friend, Annie Gadd, said: "Peter is quite a prolific talker and this is an absolute miracle for him.

"He is the life and soul of the gym, where he helps out, and is always having a chit-chat to people. It's been so quiet without him today."

Sussex-run centre for the over 50s to some £300 for the national appeal.

Volunteer Gemma Stimpson said: "Half of the proceeds from Comic Relief go to help elderly people. It's nice to give something back to another charity."

THe centre's knitting club members played their part in last Friday's efforts by creating a mass of knitted woollen red noses.

Dozens of red-iced cakes were also baked in the kitchen of the centre in Sudley Road. Chef Jack Hurry also had his legs waxed by his boss, catering coordinator, Alison Chandler, for the good cause.

Last Friday was the first time the centre had taken part in Red Nose Day.

MOTORISTS will be encouraged to slow down on private roads in Elmer.

THe company which owns the Elmer Sands Estate has received planning permission to temporarily install one piece of radar equipment with three posts to be moved around the roads.

THis will alert speeding drivers by surveying and displaying how fast they are travelling.

Arun District Council planning officer Anita Gardner said the equipment measuring about 41cm wide and 63.5m high - was acceptable.

She says in her decision report: "THe estate extends to about 380 properties with a little over 500 adult residents.

"A sample survey carried out by the applicants, Elmer Sands Ltd, indicated a 94 per cent support...from the estate members who could be directly affected by the application.

"Since the display has limited dimensions, and will be moved between three locations, it will have no adverse impact on the appearance of the street scene when it is only present in a particular location for a limited period.

"THere will be three posts at different locations chosen from the ten locations shown on the application."

In its proposal, the estate company said speeding vehicles were a particular concern as the estate roads were narrow and lacked pavements. A lack of street lighting made the situation even more dangerous when it was dark, it added.

"Saidi Kanda and his band will introduce you to music unlike anything you've heard before."

MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST Saidi Kanda will be bringing his hugely talented band, MvulaMandondo, to Chidham on April 8.

Saidi's heritage stems from Tanzania which has heavily influenced his musical style.

As well as being taught about music by his father, he also learned how to make many instruments from him. THis has enabled him to become one of the most talented multiinstrumentalists of African traditional music.

He is also renowned for his unique and naturally melodic voice.

Years ago his musical prowess brought him to the attention of the Congolese musician Remmy Ongala, who gave him a place in his Super Matimila Band. From there, Saidi went on to be awarded Womad percussionist of the year in 1989. Settling in London, he then helped form the UK’S Orchestra Baboma and played with most of the greats of African Music including Papa Wemba, Kofi Olamindea, and Mose Fanfan.

Waiting for a diagnosis can be the worst thing in the world, but waiting for an appointment can be even more frustrating.

In the morning, when I am making the children’s lunch boxes for school, I always put breakfast TV on in my kitchen to catch up on the news and generally what’s going on in the world.

THis week there was a particular story that caught my attention. THere was a lovely lady being interviewed, who was about 25 years old.

She had symptoms of stomach issues and was originally diagnosed with IBS. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) A few months later her pain and discomfort was worsening, so she went back to the doctors and spent the next few weeks waiting for a scan.

Several weeks later, shockingly, she was told she had ovarian cancer and needed immediate treatment. No one will ever know, that if she had had a scan several weeks previously, would she

have avoided so much pain and stress of not knowing what was wrong with her?

Luckily she is on the road to recovery now and her prognosis is good, but many people like her are not so lucky.

She had all the symptoms of ovarian cancer too, such as swollen stomach, lower pelvic and back pain, bladder discomfort and nausea, but it had not crossed her mind that this disease could even be a possibility in someone as young as her.

To me, it’s always about taking your health into your own hands. Sadly, gone are the days when you see the same GP every time you visit your doctors surgery. THose ‘family’ doctors who

would have known everything about you, your children, your parents and your grandparents are few and far between.

So if you feel there is something wrong with your health and you have concerns, ask what your options are. Ask if there is any alternative route to your diagnosis, other than waiting six weeks for your appointment to be arranged.

Or do your own research and see where you can self refer in your local area. In Cosham high street, near Portsmouth, there is a clinic that does exactly this and its called, ‘Ultra sound Direct’.

Community News & Views AWARD-WINNERS will be performing in West Sussex Guitar Club's next recital.

THe evening, called Guitar in Good Company, features Paul Gregory, guitarist, and the Cruft-Robertson-Pleeth string trio (violin, viola, and cello) and will take place at 7.30pm tomorrow at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road.

Paul Gregory, pictured below, started playing guitar at the age of 10. Later, he also studied cello and composition in London and is an Associate of the Royal College of Music.

Paul won notable student awards, being nominated as one of tomorrow’s musicians and offered a concert at the Fairfield Hall, Croydon.

As a winner of the Park Lane Awards, he gave a recital at the Purcell Room on London’s South Bank. Over the years, there have been many BBC Radio 3 programmes, including live broadcasts from the NTL Studio in Belfast and the Wigmore Hall as well as from Broadcasting House.

He has been a member of the Lontano Ensemble specialising in contemporary music and has been invited as a soloist to most parts of the world, including the Americas and Hong Kong.

His busy schedule of late has included recitals for the Nantes Conservatoire and Picardie Festival, Music Siena in Italy as well as West Dean International Guitar Festival, near Chichester, and at the Royal College of Music in Cardiff.

He has recently given masterclasses at the royal college, Trinity College of Music in London and the College of Music in Dublin.

Paul is the musical director for the weekly Tuesday lunchtime concerts at the Chapel Royal, Brighton, and the guitar masters series as part of the Brighton Festival.

Benedict Cruft learned to play the violin from the age of six.

In 1966, he entered the Royal College of Music where he won the top violin prize in l968 when he was only 19. He worked professionally as a soloist and with chamber orchestras. From 2003-13, he was the Dean of the School of Music of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. During, and after those ten years, he continued to perform regularly.

When he was made a Fellow of the Royal College in 2012, Benedict became the fourth member of the Cruft family to have been honoured with an Fellowship.

Scottish-born George Robertson studied at the Royal College of Music in London under a Caird Scholarship. Early in his career, he was a member of the BBC Symphony, Bath Festival and Philharmonic Orchestras, working with Kempe, Klemperer and Menuhin before going to play principal viola in the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, then with Celebidache in the Stockholm Radio Orchestra.

Returning to London in 1966, he rejoined the New Philharmonia until 1977, when he began freelance work, recording for films and television and playing with many chamber groups. He has recorded the complete works for solo viola by Max Reger for ASV Records. George spends much of his time today pursuing his other interests of painting and video work.

Anthony Pleeth has been one of the leading cellists of his generation devoted to historically informed performance practices. He has been conspicuous in his versatility, playing in orchestras, chamber ensembles and concerting as a soloist.

Anthony was born in London in 1948. His father was the celebrated William Pleeth and his mother the acclaimed pianist, Margaret Good.

Pleeth first studied with his father and became a virtuoso performer by his teens, making his first recording at the age of 13. Pleeth later studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, winning the Gold Medal in cello performance in 1966.

In 1969, he joined the faculty at the Guildhall School of Music as professor of cello He remained busy in the new century and performed on several notable film soundtracks.

THe programme of this special evening will include works by Beethoven, Schubert, Villa-Lobos and Pablo Casals.

WOMEN who make music will be the subject of a lecture recital at Bognor Regis Music Club.

Pianist Angela Zanders, pictured below, will give the musical event at 7pm tomorrow in the club's Concert Room at 2 Sudley Road.

It will be an introduction to the lives and music of women composers from the Baroque era to the present day, including Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn, Maria Symanowska, Amy Beach, Lili Boulanger, Grazyna Bacewicz and Cecilia McDowall.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: “We are looking forward to Angela’s illustrated lecture recital. She is an excellent presenter and performer and I am sure the evening will be most informative as well as very entertaining”.

Angela studied at THe Purcell School, Trinity College of Music and Goldsmiths’ College, University of London. She also won an Austrian Government Scholarship for a year’s study at the HochschulefürMusik in Vienna.

At Trinity College, where she studied with Joseph Weingarten, Angela won many competitions and awards. She later studied piano with Albert Ferber and chamber music with William Pleeth and Raphael Wallfisch as well as gaining enormous inspiration from lessons with Murray Perahia over a number of years.

She has performed all over the UK, including venues such as London’s Wigmore Hall, South Bank and St. Martin’s-inthe-Fields and at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff. She has broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and has given performances throughout Europe and in Australia and New Zealand, both as soloist and accompanist and as pianist in the Solarek Piano Trio, which she formed in 1992.

Angela has worked extensively as accompanist to a variety of internationally acclaimed singers and instrumentalists and for ten years was accompanist at the Centre for Young Musicians in London.

She has a special interest in promoting the accessibility of classical music and has been giving lecture recitals for many years. She has lectured in Music Appreciation for Birkbeck College, University of London and for the WEA and U3A in Hampshire and currently lectures at the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham.

A lecturer at the University of Chichester since 2010, Angela has recently recorded a CD of solo piano music.

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum Wren may have been the building’s architect as he had previously given building advice to the cathedral.

However in 1695 and 1696 Sir Christopher Wren was otherwise engaged in London with the re-building of St Paul’s Cathedral.

THere is some speculation that there are similarities in the designs of both Edes House and Stockbridge House in Stockbridge Road, both having been built at a similar time, the latter by John Lilliott a carpenter.

THe property had coach houses, stables and outhouses plus three acres of meadow land situated behind the house.

THe only feature to survive from the garden is a sundial, minus its gnomon (the part of the sundial that creates a shadow), which is now situated in the midst of the circular rose bed in front of County Hall.

John was the nephew of Henry Edes, Canon Residentiary of Chichester.

John may have been a maltster who moved to Chidham shortly before 1688 and married Hannah Ayling, daughter of THomas Ayling of Chichester in 1693.

A maltster produced malt ready for the brewing process by beginning to germinate predominantly barley grains and then stopping this process with heat when certain changes have taken place inside the grain.

Unfortunately John died before the building could be completed and his widow Hannah took over the supervision of the completion of the construction.

From about 1911 to 1967 the building was erroneously referred to as Wren or Wren’s House, as it was suggested that Christopher

f Edes House from the front

was referred to as Westgate House in the will of Elizabeth Penfold.

It continued to be known as Westgate House until 1905 when it acquired the name West Street House.

After 1967, through the efforts of the County Archivist at the time, Francis William Steer, the name Edes House was adopted.

Prior to the property being acquired by West Sussex County Council in 1916 for £5,500 from Walter Ernest Tower, the ownership of the property after John and Hannah Edes is somewhat complicated.

John and Jane Williams were the first to occupy the building after the Edes and it subsequently passed through successive generations of the Williams family.

Dr Joseph McCarogher later inherited it in 1848.

From 1916 the County Council used the house as offices until County Hall was built in the grounds behind the house in 1936.

Between 1938 and 1967 the County Library occupied the house as its headquarters until a purpose built library was erected and opened in nearby Tower Street.

In 1967 the house underwent an extensive renovation enabling it to be suitable to house county and diocesan archives.

By the late 1980's however, the building’s fabric was feeling the strain.

THe house closed in 1989 in order for the records to be moved to the purpose-built Records Office in Orchard Street.

Following the closure further restoration began on the house resulting in the offices being returned to more domestic settings now perfectly utilised for functions such as weddings and corporate events as well as historical tours and afternoon tea.

IT WILL be one of the most important games in recent years as Chichester Rugby Club stand on the brink of relegation.

BOGNOR'S under-10s proved they can perform on the big stage after running out to play rugby in front of more than 12,000 fans.

THe team were among a number in the region to be invited to Twickenham to play a tournament before the recent Harlequins versus Newcastle Falcons match in the Aviva Premiership.

After impressing coaches and referees with their skills, the Bognor youngsters were chosen to perform on the pitch at THe Stoop at half time - following in the steps of internationals such as former England captain Chris Robshaw, Sussex-born prop Joe Marler and current England scrum half Danny Care.

Steve Andrews, who coaches Bognor under10s, said: "At the start of the tournament it was explained that the teams would be scored on teamwork, sportsmanship, respect and playing in the Harlequins way.

"THe scoring would be out of five in each category thus meaning 20 would be the

highest possible score for any team in one game. I am pleased to say that Bognor managed to score 20 in two games and 19 in the third thus allowing them to play on the pitch at half time."

THe squad was made up of Harry Shepheard, Samuel Russell, Seth Hopwood, Sean Andrews, Ben Riley, Sean Carroll, Bertie Gregson, Max Wheelhouse, Ethan Kearns, Fenton Walker and Tristan Absalom.

Steve said: "THey played their little hearts out and the feedback from everyone up there was brilliant. THey were delighted with the lads in terms of how they played and the respect they showed. It was also good for them to play in front of 12,000 people. THey were all really pleased about that.

"In the end, they played Worthing so it turned into a little derby which finished 1-1.

After the match they all had photos with Sam Aspland-Robinson, one of the England under-20s players who had just won the Six Nations, so they had a great day."

Pagham's future looks bright as under-21s secure another title

f The starting gun is fired on a new season

THE FUTURE is looking bright for Pagham as the under-21s clinched their third title in a row.

THe young Lions sealed the SCFL Western Division crown this week with three games still to go in the season.

With a cup semi final left to come, hopes are high at Nyetimber that the nucleus of the under-21 side can fire Pagham to success in the future.

Pagham chairman Tony Shea said: "For most of the group, this title made it three league winners' medals in three years - a fantastic achievement for the lads and one the club is extremely proud of.

"On top of that success, a number of the under-21 lads have featured regularly for the first team this year."

With those young players starting, Pagham have enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks and currently sit fourth in the SCFL Premier.

However, a good run was brought to an end on Saturday when they were beaten 3-0 at inform Eastbourne Town.

THe Lions welcome Newhaven to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) as Mark Bennett's side look to finish the season on the up.

THE STARTING gun is about the be fired on another track season for Chichester Athletics Club.

After another successful cross-country year, focus now switches to the oval as competitors across all ages look to rack up a raft of personal bests.

THere is no time for anyone to ease themselves in - with April seeing all of the club's teams in action.

THe main event will be the Southern Athletics League match on April 15 at Andover.

With Portsmouth booked up for another event, the track in north Hampshire will count as Chi's 'home' event THe club is hoping to provide two competitors in each event and make the most of familiar territory to start the Division THree South West campaign off well.

April 29 and 30 then sees the National Youth Development League start - with the lower age group match taking place on the Saturday and the uppers on the Sunday - both are being held at THe Mountbatten, Centre in Portsmouth.

It's been a busy time of the year for the outdoor runners too, with members of the club heading to Fleet earlier this month for their regular spring half marathon.

Nearly 2,700 runners took part on the undulating course with Mike Houston leading the squad home in a time of 1.19.06, followed by Graham Woodward (1.27.05), Andrew Moore (1.43.39), Andrew Whitfield (1.48.19) and Kevin Williams (1.52.51).

Nadia Anderson (1.53.42), finished first out of the women's cohort.

On the same day, eight members from the club joined 2,400 others for the Eastleigh 10k road race.

But Chi's contingent performed well with James Baker (17th overall & third V40 - 32.23) leading the way.

THere were also good performances from Conrad Meagher (37th – 34.16), Rebecca Moore (52nd & 4th women’s – 34.38), Jane Harrop (311st & 1st FV55 – 40.40), Ivan Prince (41.41), Anneliese Shaw (43.33), Andrew Harrop (47.35) and Sue Baker (58.30).

Miles Rutherford's side have surprised many in the SCFL Premier this season.

Bosham keep Sids at bay in title race BOSHAM moved a step closer to the SCFL Division Two title after rivals Sidlesham stumbled.

THe Robins have been leading the way for much of the season and currently sit three points clear at the top of the tree.

With just three games to go, Andy Probee's side are close to securing the title and possible promotion.

A 0-0 draw at Roffey last weekend, which was just the fifth time all season Bosham have dropped points, did open the door slightly for the chasing pack.

But local rivals Sidlesham, who currently sit third but with a game in hand, were unable to capitalise.

It was the second time in six weeks that the Sids have suffered a reverse at the hands of the strugglers.

THe defeat leaves them nine points behind Bosham with time running out for a challenge to be made.

More likely to challenge Bosham will be second placed Jarvis Brook, who are three points behind but have played a game more.

THe Robins have a rest week and will be watching on as others catch up on fixtures.

BOGNOR'S march to the Ryman Premier title continues - and manager Jamie Howell believes he has hundreds of people to thank for making the dream a near-reality.

Two home wins in the space of a few days have kept the Rocks top of the Ryman Premier.

With just five games to go, the gap between Bognor and their nearest challengers Havant in second is four points with both now having played the same number of matches.

Key to that has been an unerring level of consistency which has seen the Rocks lose just three times at home and three times away in the league all season.

And Howell believes the excellent support the club has had from the loyal fans both at Nyewood Lane and on the road have cheered his tight-knit squad on.

Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "THe support has been superb. We had a good crowd on Tuesday against Leiston which was great considering it was midweek.

"But the support all season both home and away has been brilliant and much appreciated.

"When there are 150 to 200 people behind the goal that can make the difference.

"We are hoping for another good crowd again at Enfield and we hope we can give them another great performance and a decent result to send the fans home with a smile on their face."

Bognor have hit form just at the right time.

Last Saturday saw the Rocks defeat in-form Canvey Island 4-0 with James Fraser (3) and Jimmy Muitt scoring the goals.

THen on Tuesday, Bognor despatched playoff contenders Leiston 1-0 as a sparking Jimmy Wild effort and some excellent defensive play secured all three points.

THose two victories mean that Bognor's unbeaten league run now stands at 11 games, with the Rocks losing just once since the start of the year.

Howell said: "Leiston was a difficult game. It went how I thought. We were excellent in the first half, playing as well as we've played for some time.

"But when we didn't get the second I knew it was always going to be difficult and to be fair to Leiston they changed a few things and we held on."

Next up for the Rocks is a trip to perennial play-off contenders Enfield Town, a place where Bognor have struggled over the years.

Howell will have to do so with a few players missing. Dan Beck is awaiting a scan (hip) while striker Charlie Moone has been released. However Chad Field is back from suspension and dual-signing Lorenzo Dolcetti is set to be available.

Howell said: "THings have just clicked.

Sometimes it goes like that. We just need to keep doing what we are doing and focus on what will be a difficult match."

Howell praises Fraser's finishing FOOTBALL managers up and down the country would give their right arm for someone like James Fraser.

Since returning to the club from Burgess Hill via Whitehawk, the midfield maestro has been integral to the Rocks' performances.

But, perhaps more importantly, he has now become a 20-goal a season player - the type of player that every manager is always keen to snap up.

After Fraser fired Bognor to another three points last weekend at home to Canvey Island, manager Jamie Howell couldn't speak highly enough of his number seven.

Howell said: "Fraser has just been an integral part of the team. He has this unique ability to pop up at crucial times to get us a goal when we need one.

"He wants to win and has a great mentality which is infectious.

"He has been a revelation for us and getting 23 goals from midfield, that would be a good return for a forward. THe tally speaks volumes for the role he has played for us."

Howell added: "THere's a right and a wrong way to leave the club. He didn't give me any problems and, when he became available, we were delighted to welcome him back."

IT'S BEEN a huge week really in the grand scheme of things as once again the club has pulled together.

After losing Sami El-Abd for two games and getting six points; after losing Chad Field for three games and getting nine points everything is going in the right direction.

I think the reason for the change of form has been very obvious.

Normally we have got six or seven players that have a steely mentality that carry us through games.

But the last three of so games we have 15 lads with that mentality and they are doing everything they can to win games.

Everyone is firing on all cylinders; everyone is playing well on and off the bench.

On paper, the 4-0 win against Canvey may have looked comfortable but it was far from that.

At Nyewood the wind normally comes steaming in along the side and down towards the corner, which is why we normally play the way we do.

But for the first time in what I can remember it was straight down the middle.

THey turned us around and had the breeze in the first half so we knew that if we kept things close we would have them in the second half.

We could have easily been two or three down by the end of that first period.

As it was, we were completely in control at half time although I think we were quite lucky not to have conceded.

To get 2-0 up we knew that with the wind we would have them in the second half, which we did by getting another two goals.

THen against Leiston it was very much chalk and cheese in two halves.

We played some unbelievable football in that first half and Jimmy Wild scored an amazing goal.

But the whole performance I thought was excellent - we were playing properly, our movement off the ball was great and we could have quite

easily scored two or three.

As it was, we had a one nil lead and then in the second half we just defended that by getting men behind the ball and defending resolutely.

Everyone did a shift and to come out with the win after two completely different halves that's credit to what we're doing.

Next up is Enfield which is a place where we have traditionally struggled.

We know we are in for a difficult game as they are a physical side. But for us it is another cup final - three points is what we are after and three points is what I expect us to get. We are the ones in form and we should beat them.

As for the form we are in I am not surprised.

THe view from many people who follow our level - including some of the kids I teach at school who follow Worthing - is that Bognor always fade away.

But the fact is that we do not start too well and we are always paying catch-up.

We have never really been a front runner and with the pitch we have, with the fitness that we have, and the good weather, I expect us to finish the season well.

As I keep on saying, the pressure is on Havant as it has been all year.

Even if we lose the next four games they still need to get the wins to close the four point gap that we have opened up.

We are not doing anything different; we are still the same little old Bognor and beating teams where we can.

Where we have a never-saydie attitude and everyone throwing themselves in front of balls, Havant do not have that as they have brought people into the club from outside.

THat attitude is not in the ethos of the club.

THeir fans expect them to win the league and for that reason the pressure will be on them to the end.

With five games left, I honestly believe that three wins will win it for us.
