At the Chichester District Council cabinet meeting on Tuesday, members approved a package of support worth more than £300,000 to help

small businesses and retailers across Chichester district, as well as bolster a scheme which helps people to find work.

THe shop front improvement scheme will be supported by £168,800 allocated from the pooled business rates fund and an additional £32,000 from reserves.

East Wittering, originally excluded from the plans, was added after the council confirmed the area had around 70 shops, close to the 100 at Midhurst,

which were included.

Cabinet chairman Cllr Tony Dignum said: "THere are three sets of grants here to help the economy in Chichester district.

"First of all we have the grants for small businesses, secondly, we have the grants specifically aimed at the retail business and thirdly, we have grants for the Choose Work scheme, which helps those people who are unable to get jobs, have a

much better chance of so doing.

"In all three cases we are building on prior success so I think this is an extremely important scheme.

"In the course of looking at the scheme, I discussed with officers to enhance it, in regard to the retail grants.

"THe £168,00 is allocated for Chichester, Selsey, Midhurst and Petworth.

PEOPLE from across the community have helped to save a cancer centre from closure.

CancerWise is an independent cancer support charity based in Basin Road, Chichester.

As featured in the Chichester Post in October last year, the centre ran into financial difficulty and was looking at closing by the end of December.

However, thanks to the local community’s efforts and hard work, the charity is set to remain open and continue to offer support to those in the area.

Centre manager Lisa Joy said in a statement: “As many of your readers will know, last year was a very difficult year financially and CancerWise was facing closure.

"THanks to the support of your newspaper, the generosity of your readers and the local community and our volunteers, CancerWise is able to continue providing emotional support, therapies and practical advice to cancer patients and their families at our dropin centre in Basin Road, Chichester in 2018.”

THe charity, which began in 1983, was

led by David Holmes and Dr Roger Field and was named Wessex Cancer Help Centre but renamed CancerWise in 2005.

THe charity offers counselling and group support to cancer patients, their family members and carers across Sussex and parts of Hampshire.

Lisa continued: “We launched the appeal last year and have had so much support from clients, media and the general community.

"We purchased the building next door with the hope to expand the centre but it has not been viable and we have now sold it. It’s enabled us to put the money back in to the charity to make it more sustainable and commence the new year on a really positive note.

“THere is still a lot of hard work to be done. We still have to raise a substantial amount of money to stay open.

"I am so proud of everyone who has helped. I lost both parents to cancer which has given me the drive to keep going. We couldn’t do any of this without all our volunteers and great team.

“Anxiety and depression hit people hard and we are there are to pick people up. Many clients benefit from what we have and can offer. If CancerWise closes, there is nowhere else for people to go.”

A VOTE and discussion is being held over improvements on the air quality for Chichester.

THe eight solutions which have been put forward for discussion include wearing face masks and walking on quiet streets, avoiding main roads to reduce exposure to pollution, and planting more trees and hedges to soak up pollution, cleaning up dirty buses and turning them electric, putting in safe cycle routes and bus lanes and teaching more people how to ride a bike.

Last year, a vision was put together for Chichester and the document

adopted by Chichester District Council. It contained many references to how the city centre should be developed and how more priority should be given to people walking and cycling.

City councillor for Chichester South, Sarah Sharp said: "THe more people that vote and take part in the survey, the more support this will give the councils for actions that will need to be taken to prevent the situation getting worse."

Dog finds new home after huge campaign Extra support for city's businesses

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STAFF at an RSPCA branch are delighted after a dog in their care has found a new home.

Steve, a two-year-old Akita Cross, had been at the branch for over 12 months Mount Noddy is the RSPCA branch for the Sussex Chichester and district and is located at Eartham, near Chichester.

THe team at the branch have been caring for Steve for a year and were desperately calling on the public to help find him a new home.

Clare Palmer, branch manager, said: "Steve recovered from a recent ankle operation and we were desperate to find this handsome, playful and loving dog a new home, yet he continuously kept

getting overlooked.

"Steve is a really bouncy dog and twisted his ankle. He is now fully recovered from the injury."

THe campaign by the team received a huge following on social media.

Steve was found roaming in Chichester and followed somebody home. THe dog warden picked him up and from his chip contacted the owner of him but they said they had re-homed him.

It was later discovered that the young dog had three homes in nine months and no one wanted him so he was taken to Mount Noddy.

Over the weekend, the branch were contacted by Toby Marchant and Sam Sheppard, a couple from Haslemere who had been following Steve's story but were in the process of moving house.

Toby said: "We would like to say that we

are both delighted and honoured to be able to give Steve the loving forever home that this special boy deserves.

"We feel that we really connected with him and his unique character. We can't wait to bring him home and enjoy the happy times to come."

Susie Carter, animal operations manager at the centre, said: "Steve has hip dysphasia and will need a hip replacement with an operation. We have raised the money for it so that we can help his new owners to pay for it.

"He also had a twisted ankle but it has been operated on and he is now recovered from it and having physio and exercise to build his muscles back up."

From page one "In examining the retail sector in the district it occurred to a number of us that the East Wittering local centre should also be included.

"THe intention would be to add East Wittering to the list but not at the expense of the others and as the grant is only for £168,000 I am proposing we add £32,000 from reserves to make sure any East Wittering retailers who make a valid case will also apply for these grants.

"We chose East Wittering as it stands out amongst those parishes as there is no other parish which has got anything like that number of shops.

"If any retail businesses outside the areas we are suggesting wish to apply for a grant, there is nothing to stop them going for the first category, which is the small business grants.”

In September, 2013, £51,000 was secured from West Sussex County Council KickStart funding to reestablish the scheme and finalised last year after £71,428 was secured from the pooled business rate fund.

Chichester District Council has identified the scheme has benefited more than 400 businesses across the district, with some business turnover increase of up to 50 per cent.

THe proposal also sees fully funded bespoke retail training to be offered to independent businesses in the district’s high streets.

Currently in West Sussex, under the localised business rates system,

any growth in business rates is split between each local authority, West Sussex County Council and the Government.

THe government then also applies a 50 per cent levy on each billing authority’s share. THe pooling arrangement enables the pool to keep this 50 per cent levy.

It means that the pool area gets to keep about £2.5m per year of business rates that would otherwise have gone to the Government. THis pot of money is then ring-fenced for investment in projects that help support the local economy.

Stephen Oates, economic development manager at Chichester District Council, confirmed, training would be provided to a very high standard.

He said: “It will be an external training provider. We are going through a procurement process to obtain one and they will be fully independent from the council.

"Having learnt from previous occasions we did this, there is very high value in obtaining a strong training company.”

Each business which undertakes the training will be eligible to apply for a grant to refurbish improve their shop front.

Cllr Roger Barrow said: “I absolutely support the inclusion of East Wittering. It is an important retail centre and a busy one, especially in the summer.”

` Missing woman A WOMAN who went missing on New Year's Day has been found safe and well.

Zoe Mitchell, 30, of no fixed address, who was reported missing on January 1, was located safe and well at a friend's house in Bracklesham Bay, near Selsey, on Wednesday January 3.

Police wish to thank the media and members of the public who shared their concerns for Zoe's wellbeing.

Canal vessel gets a new lift

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN ANNUAL restoration of a boat took place yesterday at the Canal Basin.

THe vessel, named Richmond, had its annual spruce-up ready for this year's trips.

Used for the pleasure trips up and down the canal, the boat was lifted by crane and received an independent inspection.

THe Marine and Coastguard Agency performs the inspection to ensure the boat is in tip-top condition and safe.

Volunteers at Chichester Ship Canal Trust then carry out their own inspection while the boat is out of the water, and give her a coat of paint to protect the hull and extend her life.

David Lusby, volunteer at the canal trust, said: "THis is an annual event at the Canal Basin.

"It's always best to do it at this time as there are no trips happening so it's less inconvenient. It's also quieter, with less people walking along the canal basin."

THe cafe will be re-opened on January 16 and trips start again on February 10.

Long-standing bar set to close

THe Gate House, a Lloyds No1 Bar in Chichester Gate which opened on December, 7, 2003, is closing.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We can confirm that the Wetherspoon pub, THe Gate House, will close from January 29.

WORK is well underway at THe Furlongs in Westergate as David Wilson Homes report excellent progress at its latest development.

THe house-builder has released new images, as it prepares to bring 79 new homes to the area in Hook Lane.

“THe last day of trading at the pub will be January 28.

"No member of staff will lose their job and they will be offered jobs at other Wetherspoon pubs.

“Wetherspoon will continue to operate THe Dolphin and Anchor in Chichester.

“We appreciate that customers of THe Gate House will be disappointed with the decision. However, Wetherspoon, like other companies, has to make commercial choices "We would like to thank the customers for their loyalty over the years.”

Dance Group Assistant – The Chichester & Bognor Regis Branch of Parkinson’s UK The Chichester & Bognor Regis branch of Parkinson’s UK offers support, friendship and information to local people living with Parkinson’s, their carers and families, providing opportunities for them to meet together at local venues to ensure no one has to face Parkinson’s alone. They are looking for a volunteer to assist the dance instructor at the dance session held once a month in Chichester. This will involve helping those with difficulties to understand the movements demonstrated. A basic fitness level will be required, as the role requires standing/gentle dancing for approx. one hour.

Volunteer Support Assistant for Focus Needs Group – The Wrenford Centre The Wrenford Centre is a WSCC day care centre for people with mild to complex needs. A volunteer would be appreciated to help support adults with learning disabilities on a Thursday and/or Friday morning, from 9.30am till 12 noon. They are looking for someone with good communication skills and a friendly disposition who enjoys helping people and being able to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable people.

Leading councillors at Chichester District Council agreed at Tuesday's cabinet meeting to fund the new post.

THe worker will be dedicated to helping the homeless access accommodation and rebuild their lives.

THe cost of the new position will be £40,000 per annum, funded from the base budget, subject to the annual budget process.

Cllr Jane Kilby, cabinet member for housing, said: “THe reasons why people become homeless can be extremely complex, and quite often they require much more support than just a roof over their heads.

"In many cases, people are offered accommodation, only to turn it down.

THis is because they have other issues that need to be resolved and supported."

Since 2010, the number of rough sleepers in the Chichester district has ranged from 14 to 26. THere are currently 18 known individuals sleeping rough in the district.

THese include a handful of rough sleepers who intermittently engage with homeless services and transient rough sleepers, who stay in the district for a

period of time before moving on.

Although the number of rough sleepers has not increased, the visibility of rough sleeping, particularly in the city centre, has increased over the past five years.

One of the sites is the former Argos store.

Cllr Kilby said: "Since 2016, Chichester District Council and Arun District Council have shared a homeless outreach worker who supports the homeless across both areas.

"THis role has made significant strides in bringing all of the relevant agencies together to support those who are homeless and they have developed trusting relationships with their clients.

Due to the success of this role, and the fact that we recognise that each area has different issues, we have both decided to invest in our own outreach worker.

“We are very lucky that we also have the support from Stonepillow, who are one of our key partners. We know that a lot of residents want to support the homeless.

THe best way to do this is by donating to Stonepillow, which plays such a crucial role locally in helping people to get back on their feet.

“Our staff, along with partner agencies, work very hard to help the rough sleepers in our district get back on their feet.

"THis post will provide further resources to assess the needs of individuals and bring partners together to create a package of support to help them move into settled accommodation.”

TWO MEN are due to appear in court next month to answer to a total of 26 charges of multiple sexual abuse of young boys at a children's home in West Sussex between 35 and 44 years ago.

John Michael Webber, 77, retired, of Clifton Hill, Brighton, and Don Grasty, 94, retired, of Beach Road, Selsey, have been summonsed to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, February 6.

THe prosecution follows an investigation by the Sussex Police Complex Abuse Unit.

Rise in fly-tipping incidents in Chichester costs thousands FLY-TIPPING in Chichester has risen by almost a third.

THe number of incidents has risen from 618 in 2015/16, to 988 for 2016/17.

THis has cost a total of £53,216 to clear up.

An agricultural expert is warning of the ‘hidden cost’ of fly-tipping, after it was revealed that councils have spent more than £4.5m on cleaning up the South East in just 12 months.

Newly-released figures from Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) revealed that more than one million incidents of fly-tipping were dealt with

by councils in England in 2016-17, costing taxpayers nationally £58m to clear up.

THese DEFRA figures only account for fly-tipping incidents on council land, not private land.

Every January, councils see a surge in fly-tipping, with rogue residents and traders dumping post-festive waste, including old Christmas trees.

Alan Sinclair, of Oxford-based farm insurance specialist Lycetts, warned that these figures, as high as they seemed, were not a true reflection of the cost of fly-tipping across the South East.

Latest grants for projects

` Pamper morning A PAMPER morning is being held in memory of a Bognor Regis girl.

THe event is in memory of Aimee Marshall-Williams, who passed away last year after an eight month battle with cancer.

Jules Gray, a friend of Aimee's mother, Traci has created a special pampering event at Buzby and Blue in Chichester.

THe event will be in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, which is a charity who send treasure boxes to sick children, and offer support to their families.

Ms Gray said: " THe event is in memory of Aimee MarshallWilliams, who passed away in October. Her mum Traci is a close friend of mine, and Aimee was friends with my two daughters.

"We would love lots and lots of people to come along to the salon, buy a tombola ticket, bring their families and buy some cupcakes.

"THere will also be face painting, glitter treats, mini manicures, and you can even book to have your hair cut, as our stylists have given up their Sunday morning to come in and work, every penny going to charity."

Aimee was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma, a very aggressive form of cancer, on February 3 last year, aged just seven.

THe young girl was found to have cancer of the spine and brain metastasies and a new tumour developed on the brain shortly after. She sadly passed away on October 16.

THe event will be held at Buzby and Blue, THe Hornet, Chichester on the morning of January, 28.

Workers at Good News in St Martin's Street, Chichester were overjoyed when they came top in the local finals and won the Best Store to Door Delivery Service award.

THe award is based on the delivery service of newspapers provided by newsagents to their customers.

Couple, Mick and Joyce Tidy, have been running the store for almost 28 years and put the high quality service down to the hard work of their staff.

Mick said: "It's the dedication of the workers which do justice to the shop.

THe National Federation of Retail Newsagents holds the awards every year.

THe pair won the Southern award ,which covers from London right down to the South coast, and Mick and Joyce were then invited to attend the awards final in London.

Mick said: "We travelled to the awards ceremony in London but unfortunately we didn't win. However, to be the Southern winners is a huge achievement.

"We cover all of Chichester up to Lavant and through to Bosham. We still have one of two paper-boys left but now it's mostly grown-ups with vehicles to get to all the areas. Newspapers are still selling well and with having a good service we still continue to have a good business."

THe Ferry Farm Community Solar project, situated between Selsey and Sidlesham, has announced the latest local projects which will benefit from the awards provided via its community grant fund.

"A total of 18 awards were made over the first year of the scheme, and we received 30 applications in total. All the awards made aim to help support the important work of local charities and community groups in Selsey and Sidlesham."

New leader for city's Cadets

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SPECIAL ceremony has been held to welcome a new Commander to Chichester Air Cadets.

THe change in leadership over Christmas occurred with the departure of their previous officer.

Parents, cadets and staff were able to witness the handing over ceremony of the squadron banner from Flight Lieutenant Emma Swatridge-Webb to Flight Sargeant Kerry Harnes. THis is a tradition that all RAF units observe when they change commanders which the Air Cadets also observe.

THis was coupled with another great moment, as 12 new Air Cadets were officially enrolled onto the Squadron by the Chaplain. For these Cadets this was the culmination of months of hard work and training. THey are now officially recognized as members of Royal Air Force Air Cadets and can now take part in the many activities that are on offer.

Royal Air Force Air Cadets have the chance to do many activities including flying, shooting, visits to RAF stations, adventure training, sports, first aid and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award,

plus much more. All the activities are recognized by the parent service – the Royal Air Force.

Newly-appointed Squadron Commander of 461 (Chichester) Air Cadets, Flight Sergeant Kerry Harnes, vowed to make Chichester Air Cadets the

Harbour housing concerns

by Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

THe Campaign to Protect Rural England recently published an independent report that examined the number of approved planning applications for 10 houses or more across England's 34 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which includes Chichester Harbour.

MP Gillian Keegan said: "Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a priceless asset to Chichester and the nation.

"Past generations have worked hard to conserve and enhance this protected landscape and today this is continued by the Chichester Harbour

THe report said that national parks were better protected from housing, even though in planning law they are supposed to be of equal value to the AONBs. Dr Richard Austin, the AONB manager at Chichester Harbour Conservancy, said: "THe findings of this report are a concern. THe impact of housing developments in other AONBs must serve as a warning to us.

"In particular, we must protect the setting of Chichester Harbour along its boundary, otherwise it will gradually erode the overall character of our protected landscape.

"In years to come, it would be a tremendous shame if Chichester Harbour was used as a case study to show the detrimental impact that housing can have on the landscape."

EVERYONE’S favourite board game came out from the bottom of my cupboard at Christmas - Monopoly.

Owning Mayfair for a mere £400 seems a distant dream, but then again the game did come out in 1935. While I was plotting where I should build my next hotel, it got me thinking; what would Chichester’s Monopoly board look like?

With around 447 streets in Chichester (PO19 postcode district only), it would take a long time to get around the full board, so I’ll pick out a few notable mentions.

Let’s start with Old Kent Road; the cheapest space on the board.

In Chichester that spot would go to Lennox Road, with the average property on the street valued at £163,000. Located close to the hospital, the street mainly consists of flats; many housing just a single person, the majority of which are either renting socially or privately.

THe Strand is halfway across the Monopoly board and today in Chichester this spot would be occupied by Caledonian Road.

It’s a pleasant street close to Chichester’s city centre, filled with a mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses, the majority of which are owner-occupied.

With the average property on the street worth £384,000, it matches Chichester’s average property value as a whole. So, what’s the Mayfair of Chichester? THe most expensive street in the city? Well that honour falls to North Pallant, whereby the average property in the street will set you back £1.1m. Located in the heart of the city, with Pallant House Gallery on its doorstep, North Pallant is home to some 171 people, most of whom own their property (74 per cent without a mortgage).

It is interesting to note the different styles of play, which seemed to mimic landlords’ real-life dealings. Some liked to accumulate the cheaper properties, receiving multiple rents, while others preferred to save up for the premium plots, every so often bringing in a king’s ransom.

 Railway strike RAIL passengers in Bognor Regis suffered some early morning train cancellations on Monday as a result of the latest strike by RMT members.

THe 5.49am and 7.36am services to Littlehampton were cancelled, as well as the 6.35am service from Littlehampton to the town.

Other services through Barnham on the Coastway West line later in the day were also scrapped by train operator Southern Railway. But other services operated as normal.

THe strike was the latest in a near two-year dispute between the union and the train operator about the use of driver-only trains in exceptional circumstances.

Better buses plan for uni ADDITIONAL students at university in Bognor Regis will be enticed to leave their cars behind by an improved bus service.

Officials at the University of Chichester are in talks to boost the current public transport connections between their campus in the town and Chichester.

THey hope the better dedicated service will be in place for this September when the engineering and digital technology park on the campus opens.

News of the proposal was given by the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Jane Longmore, to town councillors on Monday. She said the university was aware doubling the number of students on the campus in the next few years to 3,000 could cause additional parking concerns around the campus.

“I get more correspondence about parking than about any other issue,” she said. “As far as parking is concerned, we are looking very closely at our intra-site transport.

“At the moment, we charge for students to move between the sites, though it is a heavily subsidised service.

“One of the ways to take the pressure off parking is to get the intra-campus transport free for students so they can move freely between Chichester and Bognor Regis.

“THat would solve some of the issues.

THere is no point bringing your car if they can get to the campus on a bus for free.”

Cllr Martin Smith (LD, Hotham) had told Prof Longmore: “For local people in Hotham ward, they do have problems with

parking behind the campus, especially around the 9am lecture period when there is so much traffic coming through.”

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said the university was only providing an extra 300 flats for the additional 1,500 students at the campus.

THis was leading to landlords raising rents to cash in on their properties.

“In Marine ward, you can’t get a flat for love or money. I am concerned that the market here is being skewed by an avalanche of students.

“I am disappointed you can’t put up more students on the campus. It will be better for them all round," he said.

Prof Longmore said the university was looking into providing more accommodation but said the matter was commercially sensitive.

“We will not be able to accommodate every single student but, until 2020, we have got more than enough accommodation in Chichester,” she said.

Some of the students who would be studying in Bognor Regis would also be transferring from courses in Chichester and were unlikely to want to move from their current rooms.

THis would help to ensure there was not a sudden influx of students in Bognor Regis next September but a gradual increase over a few years.

She spoke about the engineering and digital technology park, costing £31m to build and £5m to furnish, as playing a leading role in the regeneration of the coastal region.

With all sorts of resolutions being made, I know sugar is on the list of high priorities for people to kick.

It's hard to avoid news and magazine articles everywhere on just how bad it is, and how many life threatening diseases are being associated with this common ingredient.

Eating lower sugar is an easy, obvious health commitment that many of us make in the new year. But this is quite a challenge.

With sugar lurking behind every corner, it can be hard to discern when you’re actually eating sugar. Beyond that, even if you have the willpower of an ox, you will, at some point in your low-sugar journey, find yourself unable to think about anything but sugar.

Sugar is a real addiction. According to studies, its 20 times more addictive than cocaine, so step one is to allow that it’s a real struggle and forgive yourself for not easily letting go of the white stuff.

THe easiest way to break your sugar addiction is to know when you’re actually consuming the stuff. Even food that looks healthy and organic can pack a massive amount of sugar.

Runcton area resident Annika, whose family hails from Aldwick, was awarded an OBE in the new year's list for her services to social innovation and digital technology.

Often, eating sugar can be more of a sign of boredom than anything else. Having something else to fill the eating gap with is often helpful, such as sparkling water with a dash of lemon or lime.

Merger decision of lettings firms TWO LETTING agencies around Bognor Regis have joined forces.

Abacus Letting Service and Gilbert & Cleveland Lettings have merged after working in partnership for a number of years. They will operate under the joint banner of Felpham-based Abacus Letting Services and have more than 40 years of experience.

Run by husband wife team, Jonathan and Elaine Gilbert, the new business is looking forward to expanding and developing its existing work to benefit landlords and tenants in the area.

Mr Gilbert said: "We are thrilled to be beginning this new chapter with Abacus Letting Services. Due to past, present and forthcoming legislation that affects the residential lettings industry, Elaine and I decided that it was the right time to merge both our companies."

Abacus will continue to operate from Felpham and will expand into Gilbert & Cleveland's offices in Eastgate Square in Chichester. Gilbert & Cleveland's sales business will continue in Bognor Regis, Selsey and Chichester. Both businesses will carry on supporting each other.

PLANS have been revealed to open a KFC drive-through on the A27 in Fontwell.

EuroGarages has applied to Arun District Council to change the use of the former Little Chef at the junction of the A27/A29/Arundel Road and make external alterations to the building.

If approved, the fast food operator will join Burger King, Travellodge and Shell at the site.

A statement from Alastair Flatman Planning with the application says: "Given the existing use of the building and the wider established service station uses, the proposal is considered acceptable in this location and complements existing roadside uses required now in a modern facility."

The proposed drive-through will be open 24 hours and have 36 parking spaces.

Eden worked at AJ Parker Vehicle Services for four years before he left for a larger brand. But he has come back to jointly buy it from its original family owners with his partner, Victoria Hilditch.

Eden and Victoria have renamed the business, on the Arun Business Park off Shripney Road, as Parker's Vehicle Services. Everything else stays the same.

 Re-arranged dip SUPPORTERS of Bognor Regis Swimming Club will be hoping to take part in their re-arranged dip tomorrow.

Rough seas forced the club to postpone its planned dip on new year's day because of safety fears.

The second attempt to stage the fundraiser will take at 11am on the foreshore in front of Bognor Regis Sailing Club in Victoria Road South.

Those who join in, conditions permitting, will be raising money for the swimming club and their own chosen good causes.

Neighbours object to hotel project STRONG objections have been made by neighbours to a £2m scheme for extra rooms for a Felpham hotel.

A total of 20 protests were made to Arun District Council about the proposals for the Beachcroft Hotel.

As reported, famous entrepreneur Peter de Savary and his wife, Lana, have asked Arun for planning permission to create a nine-room annexe on the boat pound between Greenock Villa and THe Gunpoint opposite the hotel.

Mr de Savary has told the Post the project would be a boost to an area he liked a lot. But B&B operators Mark and Jacky Bellamy, of Clyde Road, told the district council the proposed scheme could put them out of business.

THe said: "THe development is out of place and just too high. THe overall height of the development means that we at White Horses will lose a high degree of natural light on our front-facing guest rooms that the property has enjoyed for over 100 years and upon which our current small family business depends.

"THe council should ensure that the roofline does not exceed THe Gun Post or Coastguards buildings adjacent.

"It also dwarfs neighbours in Greenock Villa, Abegail and White Horses in a way that is not conducive to surroundings."

THe couple have also told Arun the extra vehicles used by visitors to the annexe would add to the traffic problems in Clyde Road. THe visibility splays shown on the plan took no account of the fact cars would usually be parked immediately next to the proposed entrance.

"Vehicles exiting will have no vision to the left until they have reached the centreline of the road. THis will add to the problems of traffic movements in and out

of Clyde Road.

"At any given time, traffic can only be single file inwards or single file outwards.

Dame Angela Watkinson, of nearby Outram Road, also wrote to the district council: "THe design in its current form is too dominant on the promenade and dwarfs neighbouring properties.

"THe height the development should not exceed that of the adjacent property, THe Old Gun House, called THe Gunpoint in the application."

Andrew Camp, of Felpham Road, said the height of the building would block the natural daylight, particularly summer sun, from the houses in Clyde Road to make it permanently shaded all year.

Other objections have raised similar points. But the scheme, given as three storeys in the plans, had also attracted 44 letters of support to Arun by last weekend.

James Elwood, of Santander Bank's branch in Portsmouth city centre, stated: "Santander have acted as bankers for the Beachcroft for many years and strongly support the proposal to add further value to the business but critically the locality.

"Speaking personally as a Bognor Regis resident - this would be a very sound move for the town and further underpin its aspirations for growth as both a tourist and business district."

James Brown, of Wordsworth Gardens in Felpham, said: "THe expansion of the Beachcroft Hotel can only help the local economy, (attract) more holidaymakers and a different class looking at the modern and stylish design.

"THis will create more job opportunities within the local area and prevent large chain businesses entering our small seaside town. I hope this goes ahead."

High Street resident Gill Piper stated: "We

have a need for some better quality hotel accommodation in Bognor and this would bring something much needed to the area, and a bit different. If an investor want(s) to invest in this lovely facility in our area we should embrace it."

Mr de Savary has owned the three-star Beachcroft Hotel for two years. It is one of nine he owns, has 37 bedrooms and is part

of the Great Western group of independent hotels.

His architect, Ivon Blumer, said in a statement with the planning application: "THe de Savarys are committed to supporting the local economy with this modern well designed forward-thinking investment at the Beachcroft Hotel. "Àn important aspect of the proposed

design is the dramatic gull wing roof finished in green copper cladding complementing the adjacent building at the Old Gun Post and other seafront properties along the promenade."

A landscaping scheme on the promenade side and Clyde Road would integrate the building into the seafront landscape, he added.

Cutten’s coach-builders in Chichester Written by Amanda Harwood, learning officer and Pat Saunders, volunteer at The Novium Museum EARLY Carriages were reserved for people who were unable to travel on horseback, such as those who were ill or elderly.

THe Tubb and Davis “machine” (a two end coach) was one of the first fast coaches to run between London and Brighton.

It would not be until the early 18th century when travel by coach became accepted as a form of transport, although this was still reserved for the upper classes.

THe journey time was around 11 hours (leaving Brighton at 6am) with a single fare being between 14 and 16 shillings.

By the 18th century, the design of carriages had improved significantly and this encouraged a huge range of decoration and styles.

THe introduction of springs gave rise to lighter types of carriage that could absorb the shock from uneven road surfaces and for those who could afford it, made travelling by coach much more enjoyable and comfortable.

Eventually, designs became standardised as coach-builders were able to consult textbooks and use standard patterns. A coachbuilder’s workshop tended to be separated into specialised trades like body-maker, undercarriage-maker, wheelwright, coachsmith, carriage-trimmer and carriage painter, each accommodated in their own area.

In Chichester, coach-building was established by John Turner in 1738 and, by 1784, he was in partnership and working under the name of Turner and Philpot. In 1821 the business was sold to James Ewer Cutten (1783-1857) a coach and harness maker.

THe business, which was based in St Pancras, remained in the Cutten family over the next four generations.

In July, 1832, William Ballard, landlord of THe Dolphin, West Street, entered into an agreement with James E. Cutten for repair of carriages at an annual charge of £78.

By 1839, two other coach-builders are recorded in Chichester, George Cutten, in Crane Street and James Dorey, in Little London.

A coachbuilder’s workshop tended to be separated into specialised trades like body-maker, undercarriagemaker, wheelwright, coach-smith, carriagetrimmer and carriage painter.

f Summersdale Bus c.1920 James Cutten (1812-1888) was also a coachbuilder like his father and went on to have three sons, James, Henry Richard and Charles William, all of whom worked as coachbuilders.

Henry Richard went on to have five children, including two sons, Ewer and Ernest, who also joined the family business and worked for their mother (who took over when their father died).

In 1920, Cuttens built the body on a Ford chassis motor bus which was used in Summersdale at a cost of £270.

THe advent of mass-produced cars killed off the business and in 1930 Cuttens was sold to Rowes (specialists in agricultural machinery) who later demolished the buildings in St Pancras and moved to a site in THe Hornet.

Ewer worked as a coach body maker and Ernest as coach painter.

THey remained here until the beginning of the 21st century when their site was sold to be re-developed as housing.

In the 1860s, Cuttens employed six apprentices, a third of the business’ total workforce.

A number of artefacts related to Cuttens coach-builders are housed at THe Novium Museum with a selection currently on display.

Lions eye-up trophy success ahead of Sussex Cup quarters

Chi Ladies win as Selsey held CHICHESTER City Ladies have FA Cup success in their sights after making it through to the fourth round of the cup competition.

THe Green and White Army left it late against Luton Town as goals from Alex Collinghan and Cherelle Khassal secured a 2-0 victory.

THat win brought a cash injection of £1,000 into the club but also hopes of a fourth round match against one of women’s football’s leading lights, such as Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, who enter the competition at this stage.

But Chi have avoided the Women's Super League clubs and face a trip to Oswestry in Shropshire to play THe New Saints on February 4.

Chi now have a week off to reflect on the victory ahead of returning to FA Women's Premier League south action on January 21 against Swindon Town at Oaklands Park (2pm).

Speaking after the match, manager Matt Wright said: "I think we were always on top of the game. It was a tough match and a windy day and either side could have won it.

"Our defence held out well

today and we had the lion's share of the game.

"It took a bit of quality to secure the win, which we had. THat was probably the difference."

Wright was particularly pleased to see the impact of Chi's academy coming to fruition, with young striker Collinghan and debutant Alex Walford having an impact on the match.

Wright said: "All of us work together to put the youth system together both at the Chichester College academy and at our own training sessions.

"I'm very proud of how it is all coming together and it is a proud moment for the club."

Elsewhere, in SCFL Division One Selsey will be looking to continue their six-match unbeaten as they travel to Brighton play AFC Varndeanians (3pm).

THe Blues left it late against Steyning Town last time out, with Jake Goulding scoring with ten minutes left to seal a 1-1 draw.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham travel to Montpelier Villa while Bosham host league leaders Roffey (both 2pm).

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea believes his side have what it takes to lift some silverware again this season.

THe Lions have been in fine form in recent weeks, a run that has rocketed them up to second in the SCFL Premier.

While a run of four wins was brought to a halt with a 0-0 draw at Peacehaven, Pagham's focus switches to the Sussex Senior Cup, where they face Isthmian South side Horsham. THe match on Tuesday (7.30pm) in front of a home crowd is a tough one on paper.

But having defeated other sides from higher levels, such as Lewes and Sittingbourne, already this term, Shea believes his side will be up to the quarter-final challenge.

He said: "It will be a very hard game but we showed what we can do when we beat Lewes in the last round. I’m optimistic that we can match anyone at home. It is a really good draw."

Pagham, who lifted the Peter Bentley Cup last year, also have a home RUR cup semi final against Newhaven on January 23 (7.30pm).

Shea said: "If we can reach another final for the second season running that would be great for everyone."

Chi make history with Vase win Ne

CHICHESTER City skipper Dan Hegarty says his side fear no one as the club sealed their spot in the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in their history.

Goals from Harry Williams and Steve Hutchings secured the 2-1 win for the Lillywhites over Combined Counties Premier side Horley Town.

Next up for Chi in the national knockout competition is a tough away trip to Cheshire to face 1874 Northwich on February 3.

While the long trip to face a supporterowned side who have also had a good run

in the FA Cup this season will not be easy, Hegarty said he had no doubts that City would be up to the challenge.

Speaking after the Horley match, Hegarty said: "Everyone at the club is absolutely buzzing. It's a really exciting time. We don't fear anyone. Everyone's on a similar level to us and on the day if we're better than them we'll go on and win the game. We'll see where our future goes.”

Both sides had chances to add the scoring throughout the first half but it was Horley who made the breakthrough, equalising just before the break. Chi showed their class in the second period though, withstanding pressure before Hutchings hit home after a nice piece of control.

Hegarty said: “It was a very tough game as we knew it would be. THey were a decent side.

But we managed to get the win in the end and we're into the hat for the next round.

“THe pitch made it difficult for both sides.

THere was obviously a lot on the line and both teams went for it. We had to get stuck in and put pressure on them and in the end it was all worth it because we're in the next round."

Chi's excellent week continued on Tuesday when they followed up the Vase win with a 2-0 midweek victory over Horsham YMCA to progress to the semi-final of the Sussex RUR Cup. A first-half strike from Sam Ndlouv was followed up by a Kaleem Haitham goal ten minutes from time to secure progress at the expense of a side who are third in the SCFL Premier. City will face Broadbridge Heath way in the semi-final on February 23 (7.45pm).

Next up for fifth-placed Chi is a trip to Hassocks tomorrow (3pm) in the league with the Oaklands Park side still in contention for a promotion place.

Marley wins thriller to take singles title BEN MARLEY came back from the brink to defeat team-mate Andy Whiteley and take the Tuesday Double In Double Out Division One darts singles knockout crown.

A total of 57 players took part in the two division action at the Newtown Social Club.

While numbers were limited in the division one contest, the action was very competitive with lots of high scoring registered.

THe final saw THe Legends' team mates Marley and Whiteley against each other.

Both scored well in the first leg, but it was Marley who hit double top to take the opener.

He followed that up with victory in leg two too.

But then Whiteley hit back, taking the next two to take it to a decider. Whiteley took

charge of leg five with shots of a ton, 82 and 78 leaving just 40. But he missed three darts at double top and Marley stepped up to hit 20, 16 and double 16 for a 68 out-shot, taking the match win and the Division One Singles Champion title.

Division Two also saw team mates play each other with Chi Snooker Club's Alex Norgett and Keith Robinson facing off.

Despite failing to hit his in-shot for two throws, Robinson took the first leg with a 108 out shot. His good form then flowed the next two rounds.Norgett missed his chance with 66 left to let his opponent take the leg with one dart at double 4. THen he completed a comfortable 3-0 win with a 17-dart leg to take the division two title.

Rocks head into Trophy game with Leyton Orient full of hope Next Game

LEYTON ORIENT (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes there's still hope for the Rocks despite losing ground in the fight for survival.

THe Nyewood Road side endured a blow when they suffered a cruel 2-2 draw with bottom side Whitehawk last weekend.

THat result, combined with other teams around them picking up points, means they are six points from safety in National South.

THis weekend sees the Rocks have a welcome break from the league, as they welcome National League side Leyton Orient to the Nye Camp (3pm) in the FA Trophy.

With a big crowd expected, there is hope within the Rocks camp that knockout football can bring a boost in form to a side that is low on confidence.

But for Pearce, who has been involved at the club for more than 40 years, he says the current predicament could be worse.

He told the Post said: "When I took over back in 1976 we were bottom of the league, we had no money and we were about to go out of business.

"I had players saying they were with me in midweek then by Saturday seven had left, which meant we were left with the youth team. THat’s was a lot worse than the position we are in so I’ll always be positive."

THings could have been a whole lot better at Nyewood Lane if they had sealed three points away at their Sussex rivals last weekend.

After falling behind to a very soft penalty, two Jimmy Muitt strikes put the Rocks in the driving seat.

In a two minute spell which has summed up the Rocks season so far, Whitehawk then equalised with a bobbling shot from the edge of the area - just one minute after Muitt missed a golden chance to seal his hat-trick and the win for Bognor.

THat draw means the Rocks are now two wins adrift from safety after Chippenham and Oxford City both picked up points.

Pearce vows there's still plenty to play for and says he still believes his side can get out of trouble.

He said: "THere’s not a hair's breadth between all 22 sides in the division which means that three very good sides will go down this year."

Before thoughts return to the league though, the Rocks have a high-profile match against Orient. Just four seasons ago, the O's were on the brink of the Championship after making it to Wembley in the League One playoff final.

Now, though, they are struggling in the fifth tier, sitting 19th in the 24-team division and not winning in their past three matches.

While a big crowd is expected to come from east London, Rocks fans will not be intimidated - with FA Trophy wins against Maidstone, Torquay and Altrincham still fresh in their memory from recent years.

Blues looking to bounce back CHICHESTER RFC have a tough task if they want to bounce back to winning ways, welcoming second-placed CS Rugby to Oaklands Park tomorrow (2pm).

Scott Ashley's side began 2018 in the worst possible way, with a heavy defeat 38-12 to local rivals Havant.

THat loss saw the Hampshire side leapfrog over an injury-hit Chi up to third in London Division One South.

It does not get any easier for the Blue and Blues, who face a CS Rugby side who are nine points above them in the table.

Chi took an early lead, with prop Joe Woods crashing over after just three minutes. But Ashley's side then contributed to their own downfall by missing three try chances when they were in the lead.

After going in at the break 13-7 down, the second period began with Chi earning two yellow cards. In the 20 minutes they were down to 14 men, they conceded 20 points to their fired-up hosts.

THe only score they managed in the second half was a try for hooker Dane Gingell.

To add to their grief, Blues suffered injuries to their captain Jack Bentall who is a doubt for tomorrow's crunch match.

IT MAY have been nearly a week since our match against Whitehawk but the reflection I have is exactly the same straight after the final whistle - it was definitely two points dropped.

We went one down thanks to a very debatable penalty.

Being honest, the referee had an absolute shocker.

THere was not a person in the ground who would have given that decision.

THe Whitehawk attacker was clearly pushed off the ball in a fair way and he just fell over.

I thought it was embarrassing and straight away our backs were to the wall.

But then in the second half we came out fighting and we scored two very good goals.

We then three or four other chances to win the game.

As it was, they went up the other end and we conceded a very soft goal where we allowed their striker to skip along the edge of the box before a soft shot just trickled into the goal.

It was very soft and not the sort of goal we should be letting in at this level.

It was no coincidence that it happened 40 seconds after Jimmy Muitt missed a one on one to put the game to bed as that's how things are going for us at the moment.

Jimmy scored two very goals which got us back on top but I think the poor pitch which meant the ball was bobbling all over the place was to blame for that.

On another day, he would have scored four or five and I doubt he will have a better chance to score a hat-trick at this level than that.

When the final whistle went, I must admit it was quite a sombre dressing room.

Everyone was very deflated.

THere have not been many games this season where the pressure was on but it was a game where three points were a must and a draw not good enough.

Now the great escape is the

phrase that is being thrown around.

We are deep down among it and it will be a big ask from now on.

It's not away from us but it has become a whole lot more difficult after Saturday's result.

Games against sides at the bottom should be our bread and butter.

We should be beating sides like that really.

We move on, though, to Saturday and Leyton Orient in the FA Trophy, which is a game where no one is expecting us to get anything.

THey are struggling and we are struggling at home so it will be one of those that could be a 0-0 or may be a thriller with loads of goals.

Everyone is looking forward to the game as they are a big club.

But we have to remember that they are only one division above us and it is a winnable match.

As if we need a reminder, I was with a good friend on Saturday night who play at Chichester City who are into the last 16 of the FA Vase.

Seeing them talking about who they may play did get me thinking about the games we had a few years ago against Altrincham, Torquay and Maidstone.

It will be great to do something like that again.

I do fancy us tomorrow and think that we have a chance to win, perhaps 2-1 or 3-1.

THen after that, we're back to the league, with Wealdstone at home, then Hungerford.

Our form at home hasn't been this poor for years. But when we played Wealdstone away we did well and should have beaten them.

THey have picked up a few good results recently but we should not be writing it off.

We have played them a lot over the years and if we can take four points from that match and the massive game against Hungerford then that will give us a chance.
