Multi-million pound centre

THe ÂŁ6 million Enterprise Centre will provide affordable accommodation for new or small to medium-sized businesses.

THe building, located in Terminus Road, has been built by Chichester District Council in order to create jobs and encourage the growth of start-up, businesses in the district.

THe 3,282sqm of high-quality workspace includes serviced and managed offices, workshops and shared workspace in a purpose-built development.

Leader of Chichester District Council,

Cllr Tony Dignum, said: "Local business people, both established and those planning to set up new businesses, have told us that they want to see more affordable, flexible, quality business accommodation.

"In response to this, we have developed the Enterprise Centre, which we believe will help to encourage economic growth in the area."

Basepoint, who already have 30

centres, have been chosen to manage the Chichester centre which will offer flexible business accommodation, with a range of options from renting a desk for an hour through to permanent office space.

THe centre offers 82 units in total which include fully functioning offices, studios and workshops which range from 12 to 65sqm.

Homes approved at Graylingwell

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk DEVELOPMENT plans for Lower Graylingwell have been approved by councillors.

Outline planning permission was granted previously - as reported in the Chichester Post, for development of up to 160 homes.

At the planning meeting on Wednesday, committee members were divided over the layout and appearance of the plans, with members of the nearby Penny Acre site objecting to the proposals.

North ward councillor Peter Evans said: “I am speaking on behalf of the city council. We reviewed this application at our meeting on December 13.

"THe result was a unanimous vote to lodge strong objection to the proposals of this application. Our objection is that the outlined plan is not well worked out and if it goes ahead it will be to the detriment of both the existing residents of Graylingwell and the future occupiers of those proposed dwellings."

Mr Nick Parkinson, design director of Hill, the applicant, said: “I’d like to emphasise that we are fully committed to this project and to ensuring that it achieves a high quality and sustainable community.

"We also want to make sure this is achieved under an accelerated construction programme to ensure the early release of much-needed homes.”

THe proposed accommodation comprises one and two bedroom flats and two, three and four bedroom houses. THere is 30 per cent affordable

housing compromising 34 units for affordable rent and 14 shared ownership units.

Councillors were concerned over changes in the plans from the last meeting and raised three main concerns - the re-forming of the buildings along the western side, by the university, the design with three different shades of brick and the palette of the wood cladding and lastly the site of the flats, primarily around Penny Acre.

Residents from Penny Acre were concerned that three-storey flats would cause overlooking, loss of amenity, loss of light and have a harmful visual impact with only deciduous trees as a barrier.

Cabinet member for housing services, Cllr Jane Kilby, agreed with residents.

She said: “My concerns here are mostly the sighting of the flats. One block of flats is sitting in total isolation to the southern area of the cricket pitch. I personally feel there could be a better integration on the layout.

"I have concerns also for the balconies on the blocks of flats. I need to be reassured there is going to be no overlooking.”

Speaking after the meeting, resident Carol Findlay said: “As residents of Penny Acre, we don’t feel that we were stood up for. We feel very let down.

"We are going to be confronted by absolute blocks. When the leaves on the trees go we are going to have the bin stores and the car parks there.

"We are in total anger. In particular, that flat block four on the plans is enormous and it’s just going to block our view.

"We bought in to this development with a plan we felt comfortable with.”

New sport comes to city to keep kids fit

THe Chichester Sharks flag football club has started a children’s team for boys and girls aged from eight to 11.

Flag football is described as a safe, noncontact version of American Football, without the helmets, pads and hard hits.

It’s an ideal sport for kids looking to try something a little different.

Coach Gary Robinson said: "THe first session was held in Chichester at the weekend, with the kids having fun

learning the basic skills and getting a little muddy.

"It’s a great game for keeping kids active and promoting teamwork. THe club are keen to expand their numbers, so invite any parents of interested children to get in touch."

THe Chichester Sharks adult team have competed for 16 years in a national league, twice winning the championship.

Mr Robinson continued: "We've had an adult team for 16 odd years, but now that a few of us have started to get a little long in the tooth we thought it time to start teaching the sport to our kids.

THe result is a new kids team that had a great first session. As a father of two

myself, I'm keen to do something to help encourage kids to stay active."

THe coaches are volunteers with extensive experience playing and coaching flag football. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked coach will always be running the session to ensure children are safely looked after.

THe team will play games during the session but the focus will be on teamwork, learning new skills and enjoying themselves.

Mr Dignum continued: "It is forecast that the project could create around 275 new jobs every three years and contribute to improved business survival rates. In particular, the centre will focus on the needs of small, medium and start-up businesses, with flexible easy-in, easy-out terms.

Cllr Dignum continued: "We are looking forward to working with Basepoint, who will manage the centre on our behalf.

"THey have a huge amount of experience in managing these types of development and have already received a great response from the local business community.

"It is a guaranteed income and return. It is not just about the money.

One of our main priorities is to help the

economy develop. As we are moving in to uncertain times we want to make sure businesses are supported."

THe centre has already secured four new businesses renting office spaces including web designers, Let's Get Coffee, who currently rent in a Basepoint centre in Havant.

THese spaces range in price from the smallest office at approximately £400 a month to a workshop space at £1,600 per month.

Basepoint believe the prices are a competitive rate based on the local market rate THe regional manager for Basepoint, Rebecca Gattinesi, said: "We have a few centres nearby and this one will bridge the gap between Havant and Shoreham.

"Shoreham is currently at 100 per cent capacity. We have a wide variety of businesses in the centres from professional services to creative lifestyle, occupational health and research and design."

` By-election held A BY-ELECTION to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Sandra Westacott for the Fishbourne district ward will take place on THursday, February 22.

THe nomination period starts on Friday January 19 and ends at 4pm on Friday, January 26.

Home in Selsey causes a storm

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A PLANNING application for the rebuilding of a home in Selsey has been delegated to planning officers.

THe site in Beach Gardens was deferred at the planning meeting in December for a visit by councillors.

At Wednesday's meeting, councillors delegated a decision to officers, depending on what changes were made.

Among the alterations were the removal in the plans of an outside spiral staircase and associated balcony and the provision of a 1.8m high obscure glass screen on the eastern side of the balcony.

Town councillor Clive Alden opposed the plan at the meeting.

He said: "We do object to this application. THe plans are substantially different to the original building. We understand there are extensions and alterations to the layout but we believe it represents over- development and is out of character to the area."

Neighbouring residents attended the meeting to object to the scheme, arguing that the proposal of an extension and alterations were, in fact, incorrect, and the site was being rebuilt.

Historically, the site comprised of a two-storey dwelling with a double garage attached by a single-storey link extension.

Following fire damage to the property, part of the building was demolished.

Development management service

manager, Mr Tony Whitty said: "If the committee's concerns are just around the external staircase then officers could talk to the applicant.

"Members from the site visit will recognise there is a significant variation in the design of the properties in that estate. As we all know, design is subjective and what we need to evidence is what harm is this in terms of the character of the area."

Mr Whitty continued to say that the character of the area is very mixed in style and therefore this property would not look out of character.

Mr Daniel Bates, the applicant, seeks permission to re-build the fire-damaged part of the building, incorporating a partially constructed single-storey extension.

Resident Geoff Mellett said: "THe elevations proposed would be oppressive to eight properties to the south, west and east. THis is going to be an upside-down house with living accommodation on the first floor.

"THe calculations regarding the increase in footprint are flawed as they are based on work started without permission last May and June which incidentally took two enforcement notices to stop."

Cllr Les Hixson said: "THe overlooking of this development is too much. I really don't understand how it has got this far.

It just needs something built there that is appropriate."

If the amended plans are not received, the application will be referred back to the committee for a decision.

f The former footpath at Stockbridge

Stockbridge footpath closure leads to temporary traffic lights HIGHWAYS England have responded to complaints over the temporary traffic lights located on the A27.

THe safety lights, which are found around Stockbridge roundabout, have been set up while the footbridge is replaced.

THese traffic lights are to allow pedestrians to cross the road while the current footbridge is closed.

A Highways England spokesperson said: “THis temporary pedestrian crossing has been installed to allow pedestrians to cross safely while the new footbridge is installed.

"THey have been carefully designed to meet the highest standards,

including for safety. Following the concerns raised about the lights, senior staff have visited the site on Tuesday to assess these concerns and ensure any issues are addressed.

"Safety is Highways England’s top priority, and we want to ensure our roads are safe for our road users and workers.”

THe stretch of A27 between the Bognor roundabout and Fishbourne roundabout is closed from 8pm to 6am during weekday nights for two months while the footbridge is replaced.

THe former footbridge across the A27 will remain closed until the replacement is built and opened.

Animal Care Assistant, Animal Ambulance Driver and Charity Shop Worker – Brent Lodge Bird & Wildlife Hospital Brent Lodge Bird & Wildlife Hospital treats sick and injured wildlife and rehabilitates them for eventual release back into the wild. Volunteers are required to help with the cleaning of cages, feeding and general animal care.

The sanctuary is open 7 days per week from 9am - 5pm; volunteers would be required a minimum of one day per week. You should be keen on animal welfare but also prepared to do dirty chores of cleaning cages and feeding wildlife patients. They are also looking for volunteer Animal Ambulance Drivers to provide transport for injured birds from within a wide area to the hospital at Sidlesham, and people to help at their charity shop in Selsey.

Parents 4 Parents (Bognor Regis) – Children and Family Centres, WSCC Children and Family Centres are a ‘One Stop Shop’ where families with children under 5 can access a range of services including information and advice; drop-in to play; play and learn groups; toy library and parenting support

and health services. Parents 4 Parents has been created by parents of different backgrounds and experiences for other parents, guardians and carers. They are looking for volunteers that are parents themselves and who would be interested in supporting other parents in a safe and non-judgemental environment. You will have access to relevant training through West Sussex County Council and one to one support from the Volunteer & Employment Co-ordinator. The Parents 4 Parents group runs on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evening of every month.

School Visits Assistant – Tuppenny Barn Tuppenny Barn provides an education service that creates an inspirational environment in which the community can reconnect with the land, reinvigorate local food production and learn skills to promote sustainable living. Join the Tuppenny Barn Education team and assist with their regular school visits. Schools get the opportunity to view the organic smallholding and learn about how they grow in harmony with nature. Children are taught about wildlife, growing sustainably and see first-hand all the green measures that are employed. They also have food school

visits where the children get the opportunity to practise the ‘fork to fork’ principle by cropping fruit or vegetables and then taking them inside to cook. The volunteer post ideally would suit someone who has an education background and has first-hand experience of dealing with school children. The individual must be able to work outdoors and have an interest in the environment. It is desirable, but not essential to have a basic knowledge of growing fruit or vegetables.

Management Team Member – Bosham Monday Club Minibus More volunteers are needed to join the team of three and to assist in the planning, organising and running of the Bosham Monday Club sessions. The club is for elderly people, living independently in the Bosham area and aims to provide a social and stimulating club afternoon.

The club meets Monday, September to July (except on Bank holidays) from 2pm to 4pm. In addition, there are planning meetings and preparation time. You will need to be reliable, flexible and cooperative with good people skills.

Economy-boosting scheme recommended by cabinet

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk WORK to boost the economy in Midhurst and Selsey and a scheme to help refer patients to community-based services are just some of the new projects being planned by Chichester District Council over the next financial year.

THe revised Corporate Plan has been recommended by the council's cabinet for approval at the full council meeting on Tuesday.

Included in the projects for 2018-2019 is one to update the Midhurst Vision.

Starting in April, 2018, this project will focus on refreshing the current vision.

Work will include gathering community and business feedback which will then be used to try to unlock opportunities.

THese will aim to ensure Midhurst has a positive appearance and sense of place as well as keeping vacancy rates low and ensuring the town continues to have a mix of retail and small businesses.

Updating the Selsey Vision is also included in the project.

THis will involve looking for new ways to make the most of its seaside location and also begin April, 2018.

THe aims will be to ensure that the vacancy rate remains low and that Selsey continues to have a mix of retail and small businesses, provide new tourism opportunities as well as retain and

create jobs. THe project will also link with projects that focus on creating new employment and a new visitor economy strategy for the area.

A project will look at the options for creating more commercial opportunities on council-owned land and buildings along the foreshore at Bracklesham Bay. Social prescribing is another project to develop a new scheme to help connect residents to services and support in local places.

It will be a service for GPs and other health professionals to access on

behalf of patients who ask for help with problems that are non-medical and need more holistic community-based solutions, for example, dealing with loneliness. Only GPs will be able to make referrals to this service.

THis project will involve developing a service over the next two years working in partnership with the local community networks in Chichester district.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council said: “THe corporate plan sets out our overall vision and objectives for the future.

"Each year we review it to take into account any emerging issues and challenges, while ensuring it remains focused, relevant and affordable in delivering the needs of our community, and especially protecting the most vulnerable who live in our district.

“A variety of projects have been chosen to go forward, some focus on supporting and developing the economy while the social prescribing project will be important for helping to maintain and improve the health and well-being of people across the district.”

` Info evening at city's free school CHICHESTER’S first school for students aged four to 19 will be holding a sixth form information evening on January 23.

THe city's all-through school is on schedule to open its doors to children this September for the start of the new academic year.

THe launch of its brand new sixth form this year will include state-ofthe-art facilities and will mean at full capacity the school will be able to take more than 1,200 boys and girls right the way through from age four to 19.

THE BISHOP of Chichester became a member of the House of Lords on Tuesday.

Dr Warner was formally introduced at the start of business and supported by the bishops of Norwich and Chelmsford.

Dr Warner said: “I look forward to joining others from Sussex who serve in both houses at Westminster, and to sharing in the Church of England’s contribution to the national life through Parliament.”

Like all new members, Dr Warner will make a maiden speech at some point in the future.

f Steve is looking for a new home again

Long stay Steve becomes charity's top priority after new home falls through AN animal charity is launching an appeal to help rehome a dog after his adoption collapsed.

As reported in last week's Chichester Post, Steve, a two-year-old Akita Cross, had been at the branch for over 12 months.

Mount Noddy is the RSPCA branch for the Sussex Chichester and district and is located at Eartham, near Chichester.

THe team at the branch had been looking after Steve for a year before they found him a new home.

Branch manager Clare Palmer said: "It is through no fault of his own that Steve is

available again and sometimes sadly adoptions do not work out.

"It's very important that when looking for and showing interest in one of our animals, that all points of the animal's profile are considered, and all information given to us is correct so that we can make a perfect match."

Cleaning up air with trees

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SUPPORTERS of Clean Air Chichester came together on Saturday in the Hornet and voted to improve air quality by planting more trees.

THe discussion and vote event was run with the help and support of Clothkits and Draper's Yard to carry out a clean air survey into solutions that could help to clean up the air.

Topping the poll was the option to plant more trees and hedges to soak up pollution, with 30.6 per cent. Next in the results poll was putting in safe cycle routes and bus lanes, with 24 per cent, and to clean up dirty buses and fuel them with bio-gas or change to electric, with 16.7 per cent. THe stand gave an opportunity to share information and solutions and discuss issues with nearly 400 members of the public and talk about what other towns and cities are doing in other parts of the UK. Sarah Sharp, city councillor for Chichester South, said: “Although the clear winner in the poll is planting more hedges and trees – which is hugely ironic given the rate at which we are losing them all around us near the Free School, Westhampnett Road, White House Farm and the new Cala developments – I

would like to urge caution. Planting trees is only one of the answers. Research shows that trees can’t soak up all the pollution, which is damaging our health.

“Cycle lanes and bus lanes also gained a lot of votes – coming second in our poll.

Road space allocation was included in the road space audit carried out by the county council last year. Mums and dads especially voted for this as they would like safe cycle lanes to make that journey to school less risky. It is clear that teaching people to cycle isn’t enough – we need the safe places to cycle to be prioritised urgently.

“Another practical action that could be encouraged straight away is to reduce idling. College feast with top chefs CHEFS from some of the West Sussex’s top hotels shared their expertise with students at Chichester College.

Historic Sussex Hotels took over the college’s kitchens and restaurants on last THursday to deliver a special ‘pop up’ fine dining experience in 64 Restaurant & Bar, at the college’s Chichester campus.

A five-course tasting menu – featuring local ingredients including lobster, pheasant and oysters - was prepared and cooked by students studying hospitality and catering, under the tutelage of four chefs, led by Group Executive Head Chef and Roux Scholar Martin Hadden.

THe students started work in the kitchen at 9am and wrapped up service more than 12 hours later – giving them an intense insight into the industry, something that was embraced by each

of them.

Sam Wilde, 16, said: “It was exhilarating. I really enjoyed it and it was a huge learning experience for us.

“I want to be a chef and this just made me want it more.”

College lecturer Paul Rennie came up with the concept of hosting pop-up evenings at the college. Having now held two, it is hoped they will become a regular feature.

He said: “it’s really important for our students to gain as much experience as possible, and these evenings give them an opportunity to work with top chefs and learn from different people.

“THey can learn new techniques, and also have the opportunity to work with produce that would not normally be accessible to them in a college training kitchen."

New green gym set to improve well-being and the environment RESIDENTS in Chichester district who are looking to improve their physical and mental well-being while making a difference to their local environment are being encouraged to join a 'green gym' at a local beauty spot.

THe Chichester Green Gym takes place at Brandy Hole Copse and is run by THe Conservation Volunteers (TCV) with funding from Chichester District Council.

THe sessions run every Tuesday, from 11am until 2pm, and are free to attend. THe Green Gym provides a friendly atmosphere for people of all abilities to work on conservation tasks at their own pace in the fresh air.

TCV is a community volunteering charity which aims to bring people together through conservation work in their communities.

TCV has created green gyms across the country to inspire people to improve their health and the environment at the same time. THe Green Gym is run by experienced

volunteers who provide the skills and equipment needed to help residents tackle physical jobs in the outdoors.

Brandy Hole Copse is an area of ancient woodland and is also the first local nature reserve in the Chichester area.

Every week, a group of around eight volunteers meet at the copse for the Green Gym. THe session starts with gentle warm-up exercises in preparation for the physical tasks.

“THe feedback from volunteers who have taken part in THe Green Gym at Brandy Hole Copse so far has been excellent,” said Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council.

“I would encourage residents living in the area to come along, meet their neighbours and make a difference to their local environment."

` Police warning POLICE are warning drug-users about a strong pill which was taken in Petworth at the weekend.

Officers were called to Market Square at 12.45am on Sunday, January 14, where a 22-yearold man from Chichester had collapsed. He was taken to hospital and it was established he had taken a pill, believed to be MDMA. He was in a serious condition but has improved and is now making a recovery.

Detective Constable Andrea Watts said: "Taking drugs in any form is dangerous, particularly when the user does not know the purity of the drug. We are issuing a warning about any MDMA pills, they are orange 'TESLA' tablets.

"We have arrested one man and are continuing to investigate."

A 23-year-old from Chichester was arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug (MDMA) and a 17-year-old boy from Petworth has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class A drug (MDMA).

THey have both been released under investigation.

` Missing Paul PAUL WILKINS, 51, reported missing after last being seen in Bracklesham at around 9.30pm on Saturday, January 13, has been found safe.

He was discovered sleeping in a bird hide at Chichester Marina at 10.20pm on Monday and taken to hospital for mild hypothermia.

He is now home, safe and well.

A CHICHESTER charity's project is progressing on schedule just over a year after its launch.

St Wilfrid's Hospice launched its DreamBuilding campaign just over a year ago to raise funds for its new hospice.

THe hospice's services have expanded so the current site in Donnington is no longer fit-for-purpose and the charity is now unable to meet growing demand for services.

THe new hospice will be made up of four buildings designed to separate the different services the charity offers, making it easier for patients and relatives to navigate. THese will be linked together by glazed corridors, with views onto the courtyard garden.

THe project is now progressing well with the contractors, Kier, returning to the site in early January. After a detailed consultation with staff, volunteers, patients and their families, the internal plans and designs have been signed off and St Wilfrid's has established an internal group to look at future departmental operating needs and how they will use the building.

Building will continue throughout 2018, with completion due in the first quarter of 2019.

"In just over a year from now, we hope to open the doors of our new hospice to our very first patients.

"THank you so much to everyone who has supported our campaign so far – we are extremely grateful to every single one of our DreamBuilders."

New business units provide space for expansion in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk WORK has begun on a new £2 million development that will accommodate six new industrial units.

THis is the second building project on the Terminus Road industrial estate that has been commissioned by Chichester District Council to help boost the local economy.

Previously home to Good Metalcraft on Plot 21, the redundant building was deemed no longer suitable for modern business needs.

THe building was demolished to make new spaces for the units which are due to be finished by summer 2018.

Cllr Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester District Council, said: "One of the key aims of this scheme is to improve the area's economy by attracting new employers.

"It could also provide an opportunity for existing businesses in the area who are seeking to expand and move to new

premises.

"Because the site is owned by the council, the rental income will go towards helping the council provide key services for our residents. THis project will add to our portfolio of business accommodation, allowing us to offer a variety of options for local businesses.

"THe new Enterprise Centre, located in Terminus Road, will offer start-up business accommodation from spring 2018, plus we also currently offer options to businesses at the Woodruff Centre in Terminus Road and the St James’ Trading Estate."

Each unit on the site will provide between 230 sqm and 300 sqm of floor space, as well as the potential to add a mezzanine floor at tenants discretion.

Every business will also have the option to dedicate some space to a trade counter area. THe council has said each unit will employ approximately five people.

Actress visits animal centre to help encourage adoptions

THe Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre in Sidlesham is looking for new homes for over 170 cats currently in their care.

Susan Jameson, known for portraying Esther Lane in the BBC crime drama New Tricks between 2003 and 2013 and wife of actor, James Bolam is the president of the charity and is keen to help.

Mrs Jameson who has rescued two cats herself from the centre said: "I rescued Badger and Annie around six years ago. THey are both getting on a bit now though as we got them aged seven and eight.

"Badger is black and white, extremely lazy and a bit fat and Annie is a tabby who loves being outside and busy.

THe plan was to get one, but they came together.

"We also have three rescue dogs, one from the Mayhew in London and two from Holbrook near Horsham, they are also both in their mature years.

"My husband, is also a big animal lover.

Our first dog was a puppy but now we also rescue. I don’t think we need to breed animals when there are so many rescues to give homes to.

"I can’t resist the oldies, they’ve had a bit of a life and then it’s been taken away

from them, so it’s lovely to be able to give them a good home.

"I think it’s important to people to realise that you can have a cat even with dogs. People always feel anxious if they have a dog but you just have to introduce them carefully. It doesn’t always work, but it’s something to bear in mind."

THe staff are hoping that 10 month old, Squeak, finds a home soon.

THe ten-month-old tabby cat has been at the centre since August last year and has a form of diabetes which means he cannot retain water.

Squeak has to be administered eye drops every day which the centre is raising money for to help a new owner pay for the cost of the medication.

Animal care officers, Aisha Whittock and Becky Cordwell, both

extremely passionate about their jobs, know every animal at the centre by name.

On Christmas Day, Mrs Jameson, who lives in Billingshurst, always visits the centre to help out.

She said: “My job is to clean the litter trays. I’m here every year. I’ve even brought some new scourers with me on this visit, as I got through the centre’s supply last month!”

Sixties bands to help Charlie SIXTIES musicians from around Bognor Regis are reliving the past to give a disabled boy a future.

THe 35 band members from the area's vibrant music scene of that decade are reuniting again for their latest annual fundraiser for a good cause.

Original artists will again be performing in this year's Back To THe 60s Revival will help a disabled two-year-old boy.

Charlie Fielding has arteriovenus malformation, which left him paralysed. THe condition is caused by a misconnection in his blood supply.

His dad, Jamie Fielding, 37, of East Preston, said: "Arteries are meant to take high pressure blood and veins low pressure blood.

"But, in Jamie's case, his veins are taking the high pressure blood. THey became swollen and caused pressure on his spine. THat eventually damaged it and has left him unable to walk."

THe condition was not diagnosed until Jamie was 18 months old. "He woke up one morning and was just unable to move his lower half," said Jame, a project manager for the Environment Agency.

Jamie was eventually admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London for a month.

His treatment stopped the pressure on his spine worsening but it could not reverse the initial damage.

"We are very grateful to be chosen to receive the funds from Back To THe Sixties. We are spending money on

physiotherapy, which is not all supplied by the NHS, and on equipment for Jamie.

"We don't want him to miss out because of his condition and we want him to be as fit and mobile as possible.

"We are confident a treatment will be found in his lifetime and we want him to be able to gain from that.

"But there are a lot of things for him that we will have to be paying for years.

"We want him to grow up with a lot of opportunities."

THe latest revival night takes place at the Riverside Caravan Centre, Shripney Road, on February 17, from 7pm to 12pm. THose taking part will include THe Detours and Friends, Johnny Devlin, THe Southbeats, THe Diamonds with Pete Manville and THe Fenmen with Roy Haines.

Lead guitarist Roy said: "THis will be the ninth time we have held the event and we have raised nearly £50,000 so far.

We sell about 500 tickets each time.

"We want to put something back into the community and we enjoy still being able to play the music we did in the 60s."

Malc Dyne, the keyboard player with THe Southbeats, said: "THe night is like a big party from the Sixties.

"People we were at school with, and people we have grown up with, all come along to see us. It's good to see old friends.

"We play the music from the sixties that everyone knew then."

JAZZ sounds will fill a Bognor Regis pub next month.

Rox Music and Arts is turning to the musical style tonight as part of a series of live music nights at THe Hothampton Arms in London Road. THose who go along will be able to hear Barry Simms continue his musical career, which began in the 70s with punk band Staa Marx.

He has never stopped making music and recently earned a music degree in the classics. THe latest genre to which he has turned is jazz and his band will be among tonight's performers.

Other performers will include Mike Bosley and John Peskett with their particular style of smooth jazz.

To round off the night, THe James Wheeler Quartet will play another style of jazz.

Rox will be staging a jive session at the pub, nicknamed THe Hoff, on February 23.

` Councillor tribute

FURTHER tributes have been paid to a late Bognor Regis councillor.

Members of Arun District Council took their first chance to reflect on the lengthy service of Dougal Maconachie at their full council meeting last Wednesday.

THe council's acting chairman for the meeting, Cllr Alan Gammon, said: "Dougal was hard-working and cared deeply for this district."

Cllr Gillian Brown, Arun's leader, said: "Dougal had a sense of honour and a sense of duty. He could always be relied on to take on everything you asked of him and more."

Music Department’s Concert Success At the end of last term, the Music Department hosted a Christmas Concert which involved over 100 students from across all year groups. It was the first concert of its kind at the school and the first since the arrival of the new leader for Music, Mr. McGeever and his newly appointed team of instrumental tutors.

A lovely evening was enjoyed by a sell-out audience of parents, friends and families. Music performances included the newly formed choir; soloists from a variety of year groups; woodwind ensemble; Year 7 and 8 whole class ensembles; and a school band and choir which closed the concert.

The students were magnificent, performing confidently to a standard beyond their years. Special thanks are given too to the PTA for providing festive refreshments.

The performance was also attended by the Mayor of the City of Chichester, Peter Evans and his wife.

Mr. Evans commented: “It was a pleasure to attend and you have some very talented young people at Bourne.

A most enjoyable evening, please thank all those involved.”

New dip held SIX HARDY dippers braved the icy sea off Bognor Regis to help the town's swimmers.

THey ventured into the waves as grey as the sky for the town's delayed new year dip wartched by about 70 people.

THe original event on the traditional date of January 1 was postponed because of the rough sea. Only a quick paddle took place.

Last Saturday's re-arranged event is expected to have raised more than £1,000 for Bognor Regis Swimming Club.

All those who took part agreed to donate at least 25 per cent of their sponsorship to the club, with the rest going to their chosen good cause.

Sarah Boote Cook, the club's chairman, was among those who took part in the dip for the second time in an air temperature of 7C, which felt like 3C in a south-southeast wind with gusts up to 26mph.

She said: "It was very cold and certainly colder than last time. I enjoyed last time better than this because it was freezing.

"But it's good to do things like this because it helps to keep the club running.

"To raise more than £1,000 from the small number of people here is very good.

It's crucial to us as a club that we get that support.

"We are a growing club and the past year was the best in the five years I have been chairman. But we have a long way to go.

"Raising money is an equally important part of the club as the swimming. It costs us £25,000 a year for the pool alone.

"We have taken on the new year's day dip now and we want to grow it to become the biggest on the south coast.

"We will definitely be back at the town's yacht club on January 1, 2019."

THe highest fundraiser for the club was

Kelvin Hickmore, 48, of Bognor Regis.

Dressed as an Ugly Sister, he raised £350 and was presented with a bottle of champagne by the town crier, Jane Smith, who counted down the dippers' entry into the sea.

Calvin said: "THat was colder today than it was on new year's day but the sea is a bit calmer.

"I will do anything to help the swimming club. It was fantastic to get the bottle of champagne. I will probably auction it for the club."

First-time dipper James Holdsworth, 48, of Aldwick, went into the sea in a pair of swimming trunks.

He said: "It was fun and it was not as cold as I expected. It's worse in the summer when you go into the sea after being hot on the seafront.

"My daughters were colder on the beach watching me than I was taking part. I think I'll get them to do it next year as well."

James expected to have raised about £500 for the Key Changes charity, which uses music in hospitals and the community to help people who have mental health problems.

It is linked to the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life charity, of which he is a director.

IN THe Darkest Hour, we’re in May, 1940, the war’s going badly – disastrously – and beleaguered PM Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) realises he must stand down. Reluctantly, the cabinet decides that Churchill is the only man whom the opposition, and the country, will accept. THe latest in a line of eminent actors to tackle the booming role of Sir Winston is Gary Oldman. And a masterful job he makes of it, too. THe stomping walk, the jutting lower lip, the rhetorical delivery with its studied pauses all create very convincingly the iconic wartime leader. We’re covering well-trodden ground, but the thunderous energy of Oldman’s performance, backed up by director Joe Wright’s sinewy camerawork, carries it through.

Clemmie, Churchill’s is played by Kristen Scott THomas, who bolsters him through these dark times.

Another strong character is to be found in THe Greatest Showman starring Hugh Jackman, the legendary American impresario, entrepreneur and snake oil salesman P.T. Barnum and his troupe of talented oddballs and outsiders. Director Michael Gracey packs the big numbers with visual snap, hauling us into the film’s rich nineteenth-century fantasia and Barnum’s giddy journey from scrappy outsider to wealthy circus master.

Community News & Views HEALTH inspectors have given a rating of good to the operator of Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

THe Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust was said by England's chief inspector of hospitals to be outstanding in some areas of its work.

Inspection teams led by the independent Care Quality Commission visited services run by the trust last autumn and noted improvements since the previous inspection in 2015.

Trust chief executive Siobhan Melia said: "THis report confirms that we are continuing our journey of continuous improvement.

"I'm delighted for everyone at the trust that this work has been recognised. We now want to make sure we take things to the next level."

THe commission inspected three out of six core services. THese featured community inpatient services, community dental services and sexual health services.

Its overall rating of the trust has stayed the same. But the ratings in community inpatient services have been upgraded.

THe community and dental services were inspected for the first time and rated as good.

THe trust's inpatient services were rated as outstanding for their caring services in one of the biggest areas of success.

It was noted by the inspectors: "Staff delivered outstanding care to patients. We saw numerous examples where staff had gone the extra mile."

Peter Horn, who chairs the trust, said: "Ratings across all the commission's domains are now good and we have two areas where we are outstanding - caring in our community inpatient services and responsive in our community end of life care."

THree areas for improvement were recommended by the commission. THese included improving referrals to mental health services.

REPAIRS are planned to Eastergate's war memorial to ensure the memory of one of its First World War soldiers is maintained.

Eastergate Parish Council has applied for consent to carry out the work at its Grade II-listed landmark, pictured above, at the junction of the A29 Nyton Road/Fontwell Avenue junction with Barnham Road.

A statement by Renford Marshall, on behalf of the parish council, says the need for the work was noticed after the memorial was cleaned last year under the guidance of the War Memorials Trust.

THe trust's conservation officer inspected the engravings and saw the name of Cecil Godfrey had become indistinct because of weathering.

"Cecil Godfrey did his duty to King and Country and enlisted in 1914," said Mr Marshall. "He was killed in action in Arras, France, on May 15, 1916. THere is no known grave and he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France."

THe intended repair, if Arun grants permission, will consist of removing the damaged stone and replacing it with nanolime.

THis consists of very small particles of calcium hydroxide suspended in an alcoholic medium to conserve materials such as limestone.

THe lettering will then be re-cut to the original size and font.

THe war memorial, topped by a lion, was unveiled by the Duke of Richmond on December 19, 1920.

Mr Marsden added: "THe lion war memorial remembers the fallen of the 1914-18 war which had a tremendous impact on the country and was felt especially in small villages like Eastergate where such a large proportion of their young men were lost.

"In many cases, families were left to mourn with no funeral and no grave. Sons, husbands, brothers, fathers and lovers went away and never returned. THe fallen from the Second World War were added later."

A NEW monthly group has started for blind and partially sighted Bognor Regis residents.

THe initial meeting of the town's Macular Support Group was attended by seven people with macular degeneration. THis condition affects the central vision of a person's retina and is usually linked to age.

THe group has met less frequently for about 18 months. Lilian Knight, 94, of Aldwick, said she had been a regular at the Chichester support group for many years.

"Coming to meetings like this enables you to find out about things you would not know about otherwise.

"You hear tips and things you would not if you were at home. You think you are the only one with this condition but groups like this show that is not the case."

THe meeting was a first for her fellow Aldwick resident, June King, 92.

She said: "THis has been very useful. I've never spoken

"It also shows the partnership working of our charities and how it benefits people in this room.

"THe programme has been set out for the coming year and, hopefully, the group will grow from here."

THe next meeting will be from 10.30am-12.30pm on Febuary 8. A range of items to hire by visually impaired people will be on show.

To bring the story to life, the children became theatre reviewers of the theatre's production of the story for their current school term.

Joe Neale, Schoolworks' lead English teacher, said: "It was fantastic to be able to get some of the best writers from two of our schools together.

"Some of the children had never been to the theatre before and it was lovely to see how inspired they were by the experience."

I’M REFERRING to the article a couple of weeks ago about the traffic-calming measures in Felpham. To be specific – speed bumps in Downview Road, Outerwhyke Road and Wroxham Way. First - I’d like to correct your figure of the £80,000 cost. It is £136,000 (according to West Sussex County Council figures).

Second – the bumps will be 65mm high –or about the height of an apple. THe residents in the area who have called for speed reduction might need to prepare for disappointment if they think that such tiny bumps will slow traffic from the average of already under 30 mph.

THird – according to official figures, for the area concerned in the past five years, in none of the six slight and one serious collisions was speed a factor.

Fourth - a comment on your statement that the developers are paying for it – along with specific other highways work in Felpham (total amount being spent is £528,000).

Two things – yes – it’s true that the developer comes up with the cash - they get it from the people who provide their profits i.e. – the owners of new houses. Secondly – the agreement between the developer and Arun District Council is to mitigate the effects of the new housing.

THere are two crucial clauses – both refer specifically to roads that will have to take an increased traffic load as a direct result of the development. It is impossible to imagine how traffic in Downview Road has increased as a direct result of Blakes Mead.

Unless a deal has been done between the developer and ADC/ WSCC – I wouldn’t be surprised if the developer asked for the money back because it has not been spent as the agreement stipulates. If you want to check – look at clauses 1.17 and 1.26 of the Section 106 agreement.

THe reason I’m cross about this is because I’d prefer the money to be spent on things that really will mitigate the effects of the additional traffic. THat is to say – making sustainable transport easier and more attractive – whether cycling, walking or travelling by bus.

VOLUNTEERS for Tangmere-based charity Dementia Support have been thanked for their hard work.

THe thank-you event, pictured above, was attended by the West Sussex High Sheriff, Lady Emma Barnard. She was joined by her personal assistant and local magistrate Julia Mansergh.

Both were impressed by the vision of the charity, the dementia services that will be provided at its new hub and the dedication of the volunteers. Lady Emma said: "What an amazing place, and what a wonderful group of people you are.

"It is very exciting to witness the start of this new enterprise, which will make an enormous difference to so many in West Sussex."

With the volunteers' help, Dementia Support is reducing the isolation and loneliness felt by people living with dementia. THe charity is also improving access to information and advice and increasing opportunities to improve wellbeing.

Its dementia support hub is being renovated and expanded.

Once it is officially opened this spring, the charity will be able offer more dementia wellbeing activities.

It will provide services for people living with dementia, their families and carers in Emswort, Chichester, Bognor Regis to Arundel and Midhurst.

Among the services on offer at the new-look hub will be dementia information and advice, social activities and a smart zone with the latest technology to promote independence.

One of the undoubted bonuses of being part of an official MCC cricket tour (hosted by the most amiable Colin and Julia Maynard) is that by Christmas Day we were transported to the Melbourne Cricket Club committee room for a sumptuous Christmas Day lunch and were duly regaled with attentive personal service, cordon bleu cuisine and the chance to sample several wines including an exquisite red exclusive to the committee room, namely the 2012 St Huberts Cabernet

Sauvignon from the Yarra Valley.

Sporting a fine bouquet of violets with nicely harmonised fruit and oak, this wine is decidedly elegant, precise, firmly concentrated on the palate and one that will age extremely well.

Matured in all French oak, the 2012 vintage marks the 150th anniversary of the St Huberts' brand and exudes gorgeous tannins, cedar and smoky oak and this medium - bodied wine (pictured above right) is a great advertisement for Australian winemaking.

Furthermore, the hospitality and conviviality afforded to the English MCC members was exceptional and, of course, this fourth test match saw Alistair Cook amass a record-breaking 244 not out in truly heroic fashion.

What a modest and self-effacing star he is! Moreover, we were then treated to a talk by my personal favourite cricket commentator in the form of the highly articulate Michael Atherton (pictured above far right) who, as ever, gave a thoughtful review of the test including lamenting the drop-in pitch which rendered a result most unlikely.

We next happened to share our

internal flight bound for Sydney with the entire English team and I sat next to young spinner Mason Crane.

I also managed to have a good chinwag with the much-maligned Stuart Broad who proved to be disarmingly affable and charming and reflected on the gruelling nature of the pitch in terms of aching limbs.

Next stop Sydney and spectacular new year's eve fireworks as we circled the harbour on board the Starship Sydney along with about 700 fellow revellers.

January 3 at Kirribilli proved to be a very special occasion followed by the Sydney Test match punctuated by a heatwave which culminated in 44 degrees, the highest temperature for 79 years and meaning that on the pitch it was nearer 58 degrees.

Incidentally, the MCC World Cricket committee have just decreed suspending play in extreme heat is within the laws, a little belatedly for poor Joe Root who had to be temporarily hospitalised!

Subsequently, the iconic Sydney Opera House was illuminated with the Ashes’ Urn in full evidence.

Post-test it was time to say au revoir to our touring party and experience a sense of loss given the camaraderie so evident during the tour!

Here's a berry good idea to beat flu and winter colds EVERYONE is going down like flies!

It seems like the flu virus has really got hold this year. THe most important thing we can do is boost our immunity and focus on good healing foods.

Elderberry is particularly amazing at bolstering our immunity, and is particularly beneficial when dealing with respiratory infections. While synthetic pharmaceuticals focus on dealing with infections after they have developed, elderberry has natural stopping power.

THe fruit's potency lies in the pigments that give the berry its nearly black colour. THe darker the colour, the richer the pigments, which

means that these dark fruits, particularly in the European Haschberg variety of black elderberry, are filled with natural healing power.

Formed in groups of molecular chains known as anthocyanins, these pigments have been found to be capable of preventing viruses from reproducing and infecting new cells.

THey also kill many of the bacteria that cause chest and respiratory infections.

As we come into contact with cold air, whether by breathing it in or through skin contact, our core temperature is reduced.

As a result, the blood vessels in the protective mucous tissues of our respiratory system constrict, and that makes it more difficult for the immune system to respond to invading bacteria and viruses.

It's also been proven that cool, dry air also allows cold and influenza viruses to survive longer outside the body than they do during summery conditions.

An great example is found in a simple sneeze.

One sneeze produces about 40,000 droplets of mucous, which exit the mouth and nose at 62 miles an hour and can travel a distance of 52 feet.

A virus contained in droplets can survive for up to 24 hours if it lands on a hard surface in a cold and dry environment with an ambient temperature of about 41 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity between 35 to 50 per cent.

In these conditions, the rate in which colds and influenza are passed from one individual to another then increases significantly.

Given these findings, seeking natural

preventatives and health-boosting options seem more important than ever.

And given that there are up to five million cases of severe respiratory illness in the world in a given year, according to the World Health Organisation, it may be a good time to turn to nature's pharmacy.

So the next time you hear a sneeze (or a cough) nearby, consider adding elderberry to your medicine cabinet, and you'll be well prepared for what’s ahead!

Stansted House changes through the years

By Amanda Harwood, Learning Officer and Pat Saunders, Volunteer at the Novium Museum LOCATED in the Ems Valley, near Rowlands Castle, on the Sussex-Hampshire border, lies Stansted House. It is believed King Harold’s father, Earl Godwin, made a base here from where he descended on the Isle of Wight.

It is believed that Roger de Montgomery, 1st Earl of Arundel, built a hunting lodge here in the 11th century and it was subsequently used by several members of the royal family.

THe earliest surviving building is the chapel built for King Henry II, a friend of the d’Aubigny Earl at that time. Henry II and his sons, Richard and John, often visited Stansted at the end of the 12th and into the 13th centuries.

In the 16th century the land and lodge were owned by John Lumley. He also owned a house in East Street, Chichester, where it is believed that he lavishly entertained Queen Elizabeth I. During the Queen’s stay, she visited the

hunting lodge and it’s believed that when she was out riding, her horse reared, and the Queen loudly commanded “Stand steed” which is said to have given Stansted its name.

Upon Lord Lumley’s death, the lodge passed to relatives and a Palladian style house was built in 1688 by Richard, second Viscount Lumley, which featured formal gardens, avenues and parkland.

Stansted remained in the Lumley family through to the 18th century, except for a short time when Sir William Waller and his forces occupied it during the English Civil War. A notable visitor in 1724 was the writer Daniel Defoe who commented “Stansted as a house seeming to be a retreat … surrounded by thick woods through which … are the most agreeable … vistas ... anywhere in England.”

The original house burnt down in 1900, and was rebuilt in 1903.

In 1912 George Wilder sold the estate to Major Cecil Whittaker.

When Brown died, James Wyatt was asked to complete the redesign. Barwell died in 1804 and the estate was bought by Lewis Way; who had the chapel restored, replanted the entire estate and probably rebuilt the kitchen gardens. When the chapel was re-consecrated in 1819 the first service was attended by poet John Keats.

Lewis Way subsequently sold the property to a London wine merchant and philanthropist named Charles Dixon in 1826. Dixon employed the architect THomas Hopper to erect the present stable block. When Charles Dixon died in 1855, he was buried in the chapel at Stansted. His widow continued to live at Stansted until her death, when the house was left in trust for her grandson, George Wilder.

THe original house burnt down in 1900, and was rebuilt in 1903. In 1912, George Wilder

sold the estate to Major Cecil Whittaker, who, in 1924, sold the estate to the 9th Earl of Bessborough, Vere Ponsonby. Both he and his French wife were enthusiastic home and garden lovers.

During the Second World War, the house was used to shelter evacuees from a Southsea orphanage.

Rocks tackle O's in big Trophy tie ROCKS fans packed out Nyewood Lane for one of the most anticipated matches of recent seasons.

Nearly 1,400 people flocked to Bognor Regis Town's stadium as Jack Pearce's side played Leyton Orient in the FA Trophy.

THe visitors from East London, who until recently were a force in the lower tiers of the Football League, brought a number of packed coaches full of supporters to cheer on their side.

But it was Rocks fans, draped in green and white with drums and flags in tow, that won the battle of the supporters, out-singing their rivals from the start of the match to the end.

Bognor's players put in a fine performance on the pitch, matching their opponents in all phases despite playing at one level below Orient.

After being reduced to ten men, and going a goal behind, all seemed lost for the Rocks.

A late Jimmy Muitt 25-yard strike sent the Rocks' fans into raptures and the match into extra time.

Sadly for the Bognor faithful, it was Leyton Orient who scored the winner.

But the result did not stop manager Jack Pearce from praising the Rocks supports for their "incredible and passionate support" throughout.

Bognor return to action at Nyewood Lane tomorrow, playing Wealdstone in the National South (3pm).

Club stalwart Pete Helsby spoke for many fans when he posted on social media after the game: "Mixed emotions about the game, one of immense pride in which our little club played and portrait itself against a major non league club and one of disappointment in the defeat.

"I for one would have loved a trip upto Brisbane Road for a replay.

Let's not forget that less than a year ago Orient were a football league side, and are a National League side now a higher

league than us!!

"However, for large periods we showed a superb crowd what Bognor are all about. I have said it so many times this season, we are not a bad team, we are capable of playing at this higher level and like we all know we are just a forward short of being comfortable at National South level.

"THe support was magnificent yesterday, and, hopefully, many will be back for our home game against Wealdstone on Saturday, with a little luck, the same vociferous support and hopefully a forward it place (and I know the club are working hard to get one) WE can climb up the league but we need to be together as one.

"Orient fans were very complimentary about us, and good luck to them in the next round. "But making friends is no use if we don't maintain our current status, so now it's back to our main priority the league!!"

Chi's promotion hopes damaged after losing start to the new year CHICHESTER RFC will look to restore some pride after back-to-back defeats badly dented their hopes of promotion.

Scott Ashley's side have had a poor start to 2018, losing out to local rivals Havant before a close 16-13 reverse to CS Rugby.

THose results have left a Chi side, who are decimated with injuries, sitting fourth in London One South - 16 points behind league leaders Medway.

Tomorrow sees the Blues travel to Cobham (2pm) as they look to get back to winning ways. THey will be spurred on by their second half performance against a strong CS Rugby side which gave the Oaklands Park faithful encouragement but not the victory that they desired.

Club spokesman Roger Gould said: "Chichester nearly won this absorbing endto-end battle against their strong second place opponents and can be proud of their performance.

"After a bad start when CS scored 13 points in 15 minutes, the Blues made a great recovery and were the better team in the second half.

"THey restored their self-belief and commitment, the cornerstone of any success.

"In the end, their opponents were hanging on as Chi pressed for a winning try and must have returned to Chiswick greatly relieved to have won for the first time in four attempts against the hosts.

"CS are a very good outfit and should be able to secure at least a promotion play-off."

Decimated by injuries, Chi had to make several changes for the match.

It was the visitors who made the quicker start, crossing twice and slotting home a penalty as the Blues' injury-hit squad struggled to cut out the errors.

But, Ashley's side rolled up their sleeves despite the setbacks, and a penalty to the Vultures' corner set up a series of drives and mauls. After some pressure, Harry Seaman at scrum half pounced as only he can to touchdown at the rear of the bodies.

In the second period, Chi continued to put pressure on the visitors.

Both sides swapped penalties and, after some sustained attack, veteran Number 8 Ben Polhill smashed over for another score to make it 16-13.

Chi pushed for the winner in the final ten minutes but spurned a number of chances which left them short in the search for a win.

BOGNOR RFC have cup glory in their sights as the Purple and Greens eye up a semi-final place in the Junior Cup. THe Hampshire Avenue side head to Chipstead tomorrow (1.30pm) in the last eight of the regionalised competition.

With a number of fans expected to make the trip to Surrey to cheer on the side, Bognor make the journey full of hope.

But they will also be wary that they have lost their last two league matches on the bounce.

After a disappointing 18-17 reverse at Sandown & Shanklin, Bognor followed that up with an agonising 21-20 home defeat against league leaders United Services Portsmouth.

THat loss means the Purple and Greens remain second in Hampshire One. But, crucially, they are now nine points off top spot.

With attention switching to the cup, all at Hampshire Avenue will be hoping Bognor find that winning feeling again soon to make sure the season does not peter out.

Elsewhere, Bognor's youth set-up continues to thrive - with the addition of girl's rugby on a Sunday morning.

In addition to a host of teams of boys from under-6s to colts level, the club are staging trial sessions for girls which are free throughout January.

THose behind the sessions hope they can use the success of Chichester-born Jess Breach, who is now playing for England, to inspire a new generation of rugby players.

More than a dozen girls have taken part in the training so far as Bognor look to form an under-13 side, open to girls in Year 8 or below, and an under-11 team.

THe club said its qualified coaches work with all levels of ability to develop rugby skills, team-building and a create great social experience.

Training, which normally costs ÂŁ2.50, takes place on Sundays from 10am to mid-day.

No January Blues for Selsey as unbeaten run extends to seven

Pagham wait for FA probe PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea said the club would wait patiently for the results of an investigation after their Sussex Senior Cup quarter final tie with Horsham was postponed at late notice.

THe Lions were set to host the Isthmian South side at Nyetimber Lane on Tuesday evening.

But, after a number of Horsham players were involved in a car accident outside London, the match was called off about 45 minutes before kick-off as the visitors had only five players at the ground.

With the Sussex FA now undertaking a probe into the situation, Shea said Pagham were still unsure what the next step would be.

He said: "THe Sussex FA are looking into it.

"We're waiting on news on whether there's a rematch or whether we go through and the match is not played."

THe situation around the late postponement could be seen as an unwelcome distraction ahead of a big week for the Lions.

With no match last weekend, Pagham slipped to fourth in the SCFL Premier as teams

around them picked up points.

It means that going into this weekend there are just three points separating second and seventh.

Tomorrow, the Lions will travel to THree Bridges, a team who are sixth and have taken ten points from the last 12.

But, with striker Dan Simmonds set to return, a man who has scored ten goals in his past four matches, Pagham fear no one.

Shea said: "It is a big week.

Hopefully, Dan will be back after missing the Peacehaven match due to a family wedding.

"It is a massive game. We'll be doing everything we can to try to win the game.

"We've been in good form so there's no reason why we will not put in a good performance."

Attention will then turn to another cup on Tuesday when Pagham welcome Newhaven to Nyetimber Lane in the semifinal of the RUR Cup (7.30pm).

THat is if the FA do not insist on the Senior Cup match with Horsham to be played then.

Shea said: "If it is them [Newhaven], we will approach that as we do any other. We'd like to reach a cup final as it's good for everyone at the club."

SELSEY will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to eight as the Blues eye up a late season push for the top three.

Steve Bailey's side struck twice in the second half to beat AFC Varndeanians at Brighton & Hove Albion's former Withdean home last weekend.

Goals from Ryan Morey and Ryan Chittock sealed the win, which means Selsey continue their push up the SCFL Division One table.

THe Blues, who sit seventh and last tasted defeat in November, travel to Haywards Heath tomorrow to play St Francis Rangers (3pm).

THe Blues' good run of form have put them back in contention with the teams leading the way.

With two games in hand on the sides around them, Selsey know that if results go their way they could haul themselves up to fourth within touching distance of a promotion place.

While their opponents tomorrow are in the bottom third of the table, they will have fresh legs after only playing three times in the past six weeks.

Saints will also be buoyed after beating third-placed Wick 3-1 away last time out.

CHICHESTER City continue to fight on four fronts as the Lillywhites' search to bring silverware to Oaklands Park steps up a gear.

THe next four matches for Miles Rutherford's side will see them compete in four different competitions.

With the matches coming thick and fast, the side currently sitting third in the SCFL Premier know the next few weeks will go a long way to deciding their fate for this season.

Tomorrow, Chi welcome Crawley Down Gatwick to Oaklands Park (3pm) as they look to keep a run going which has seen them

take 22 points from a possible 24 since early November.

THen, on Tuesday, City travel to Broadbridge Heath in the semi final of the Sussex RUR cup (7.45pm). Having beaten Hassocks 4-0 away in the league last time, thanks to goals from Josh Clack (2), Lorenzo Dolcetti and Scott Murfin, Chi will be in confident mood for the week ahead.

Also on the horizon is an away trip to Haywards Heath in the fourth round of the Peter Bentley Cup on February 6.

But, by far the biggest focus is on the FA Vase,

a competition in which Chi have reached the last 16 for the first time.

After beating Horley Town 2-1 in the last round, their opponents have raised questions over City's inclusion of a number of players who have turned out for step four teams already this season.

But, with the FA Vase match against Cheshire side 1874 Northwich to come on February 3, it is no doubt a distraction.

Elsewhere, in SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham will be looking to halt a four game losing run which stretches back to November when they travel to Rustington tomorrow (2pm).

Daren Pearce's side lost to Montpelier Villa 1-0 last time, a result which has seen them drop to fourth in the table.

Near neighbours Bosham will be looking to follow up a 3-0 victory over leaders Roffey last week with a positive result away at Brightonbased Montpelier tomorrow (2pm).

Wolverine Pink lead the rest of the pack WOLVERINE Pink have fought their way to the top of the table after two weeks of action in the Chichester Netball League.

Fourteen teams are taking part in this year's competition with the sides spread across two divisions.

THe Wolverines made it ten points from ten to start the competition by beating Red Flames in a close contest.

THe teams were level at half time 17-17, and again at the end of the third quarter. But the Wolverines hammered home the goals and took the game 32-28.

THe second week also saw Chichester College team take on newly formed Wolverine Blue. It was close at the half but College popped in 30 goals after the break to

win 44-19.

Court two had another division 1 match between the Uni team Pink Ladies and Matchmakers.

Pink ladies established a lead early on and despite a great effort from Matchmakers they couldn't catch the Uni girls who won 34-25.

Court 3 had the Premiership clash between Purple Storm and Blue Flames.

Both teams took a while to settle. But the Blue Flames stormed ahead in the second half with some edge of the circle shooting from Hutchin bringing the final score to 21-13. Spice Goals and Footloose were the other winning teams on the night beating Chichester Netball Club and Clovers respectively.

WEALDSTONE (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has called on his side to put in a winning performance ahead of tomorrow's 'massive' home match with Wealdstone.

THe Rocks are second bottom of National South, six points from safety and without a win in all competitions since mid-December.

For a league win, Bognor fans must go back to the middle of November. And, for a home victory in National South, that last happened in the middle of August, some five months ago.

Given that run, Pearce says his team owe the Bognor faithful a victory - and he believes it could start tomorrow against a mid-table Wealdstone side who have won just once away from home in the league all term.

Pearce said: "It is a massive game for us. We have to start picking up some points and wins.

THe easiest place to do that is at home.

"THe support has been magnificent for the team all season when you look at our position in the league.

"I'm sure if we work as hard as we have done in recent weeks then we will be difficult to beat and we will have plenty of possession. THe question is whether or not we can score some goals."

THe Nye Camp faithful will be full of heart after seeing their side push National League opponents Leyton Orient all the way in the FA Trophy last weekend.

Richard Gilot was dismissed for a second yellow card, a late Jimmy Muitt 25-yard piledriver took the east London side to extra time.

Orient, though, who just a few seasons ago were on the verge of promotion to the Championship, found a winner, denying the Rocks a place in the next round.

Pearce said: "Given that they are an exfootball league club who are full-time and have got good players and, given that we had eight unavailable for selection due to one thing or another, I thought we gave a very good account for ourselves.

"I don’t think any manager could ask for any more. I was absolutely delighted with the performance but I’ve been like that for last six to seven matches.

"Unfortunately we are not winning games of football. In all my years, I've never known spirit and effort get so unrewarded and that's becoming a problem."

Bognor will be without the suspended Gilot and Ben Swallow, as well as injury absentees Corey Heath, Keaton Wood, Chad Field, Ollie Pearce and James Crane for tomorrow's match.

Even with 35 per cent of his squad missing, Pearce said his focus remained on bringing a striker in.

He said: "We know what we need but we can’t sort it. I understand why our supporters get frustrated. I'm convinced it will change but we just need to be patient."

Mackems trial for teen Tommy HE HAS been one of the real positives of the Rocks season so far. And it seems as though the form of Tommy Block has not escaped sides further up the football ladder.

THe teenage midfielder, who has been linked with Championship side Sheffield United, has spent the past week on trial at Sunderland.

Bognor boss Jack Pearce told the Post that a number of clubs were interested in Block.

He insisted, though, that the midfielder remained a Rocks player, adding no deal had been agreed and any terms would be discussed after his trial.

THe Rocks have added to the squad with the addition of French midfielder Richard Gilot.

THe 21-year-old made his debut against Leyton Orient but will miss the next game after being dismissed for two bookings.

Pearce said the search for a striker continues with 'at least ten' players looked at but none has signed on the dotted line.

Meanwhile, Joe Lea has had his Rocks contract cancelled so he can join Gosport Borough to play regular first team football.

A club spokesman said: "Despite not getting much playing time, Joe was unfailing in his commitment to the club and his cheerful and friendly personality will be missed."

WHAT a game! Of course, I am talking about that battling performance this past Saturday at home to Vanarama National Premier side Leyton Orient.

THis game certainly didn’t disappoint me. It had everything. Two wonder goals, two sending offs (not that the game needed it) and some superb individual efforts which culminated into a match many will never forget.

It was an impressive showing from the Os and their fans soon packed the ground.

In the end there was a near 1,400 in attendance. I have to admit I was quite surprised after some of the Orient fans online had previous slated the competition to be a ‘Mickey Mouse Cup’, whatever that means.

Stand-out performances had to include Calvin Davies and Kristian Campbell on either side of defence and then you had Manny Adebowale who also stepped up. Oh - and the goal by ‘Magic’ Jimmy Muitt had to put him up there with the best, too. What a strike!

Bognor battled hard and more than matched the Londoners with a fine first half.

I would even go as far as to say that we were better than the visitors before half-time.

Orient came back into it after the restart and soon scored.

But Bognor continued to graft and, on 89 minutes, Muitt received the ball following good play from Doug Tuck and Harvey Whyte to steer the ball on the half volley high into the top right corner from miles out.

I loved it and celebrated in the main stand like no-one was watching. And, luckily, I think everyone else in the ground did the same.

Shame it took such a quality finish to deny us taking the

game to penalties in the end.

THat’s football though - all we have to do is replicate this sort of performance into our league games.

Orient’s next match sees them travel to Dover Athletic in the THird Round and they shouldn’t underestimate them either.

It’s hard to see whether Dover will give as good a match as we did at Nyewood Lane though! Good luck to them.

Before this, on the way to Whitehawk everyone was saying a win was what was required. And despite an in-form Muitt giving us the lead in the second-half, it was Whitehawk who would snatch the point in the end.

THe worrying thing is that they won again this past weekend. We haven’t had a great deal of luck this season and in football sometimes that’s what you need to make that bit of difference.

Hard luck was certainly dealt to Harvey in the first half and Jimmy in the second.

On another day, the result would have been 5-2 to Bognor. Steve King has got that team playing better football with Hawks expected to climb out of trouble.

THere’s no reason why we cannot do the same. Every game from now until the end of the season is like a cup game. I feel if the players think this way then we might just get out of the relegation zone.

Not many fixtures are left, but if the Orient game is anything to go by then I know the lads are trying their best.
