Rise in council tax this year

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk COUNCIL tax is set to rise this year by another £5 for Chichester residents.

News of the increase in its share of householders' total bill came at Chichester District Council's meeting on Tuesday.

THe five-year financial model in

early December last year assumed that council tax for the district council could rise by £5 (for so called mid-sized Band D property) without the need for a referendum.

THe Government has yet to confirm the referenda principles for excessive council tax increases for shire authorities, but have consulted on the option of either a 2 per cent increase or £5, whichever is greater.

THis helps low taxing authorities such as Chichester, as a small percentage uplift would benefit the council much less than some other authorities that have higher council tax levels.

THe district council will be able to increase council tax in 2018-2019 by either 2 per cent (which will generate additional income of approximately £156,000), or take up the option of implementing a £5 increase (which will

generate a further £104,000) of income).

Cllr Peter Wilding said: “We took advantage of this last year, and we are proposing the same £5 increase this year, which is under 10p a week. We have not received guidance from the Government for future years so we are assuming increases of 2 per cent beyond this year in the forecasts.”

Drivers' call to put a stop to lights

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk MOTORISTS have continued to express their anger over the temporary lights at Stockbridge.

As reported in last week's Chichester Post, Highways England responded to complaints over the temporary traffic lights located on the A27.

THe traffic lights are to allow pedestrians to cross the road while the current footbridge is closed.

After the initial issues were raised, a Highways England spokesperson said: “THis temporary pedestrian crossing has been installed to allow pedestrians to cross safely while the new footbridge is installed.

"THey have been carefully designed to meet the highest standards, including for safety. Following the concerns raised about the lights, senior staff have visited the site on Tuesday to assess these concerns and ensure any issues are addressed.

"Safety is Highways England’s top priority, and we want to ensure our roads are safe for our road users and workers.”

Councillors at Chichester District Council's meeting on Tuesday expressed their views about the lights.

Cllr Tricia Tull, for Sidlesham ward, said: " THe public anxiety concerning the Stockbridge temporary traffic lights has not lessened despite the larger signage

installed last week.

"Drivers are still assuming that green means go and not obeying the give way to the right rule on roundabouts.

"THis game of Russian roulette cannot go on for the entire time it takes to repair the footbridge and I and others will continue to urge Highways England to reconfigure the temporary pedestrian crossing for the safety of all road-users."

Work on the new footbridge is expected to last until Mid-March.

Following a number of accidents and additional complaints, extra signage has been installed.

A Highways England spokesperson said:“We have carried out extensive observations at the Stockbridge roundabout: all the road signs are clear and are being well understood by both drivers and pedestrians.

"Nevertheless, we take feedback like this seriously and have installed extra ‘give way’ signs at the roundabout to remove any doubt that normal roundabout rules still apply.

"We will continue to keep the performance of the roadworks under constant review as we continue our work to replace this well-used footbridge.”

THe stretch of A27 between the Bognor roundabout and Fishbourne roundabout is closed from 8pm to 6am during weekday nights for two months while the footbridge is replaced.

THe former footbridge across the A27 will remain closed until the replacement is built and opened.

USING your phone while driving could cost you £200 and six points on your licence. It could also cost lives.

THat's the message being issued by Surrey and Sussex Police as the forces prepare to crackdown on offenders who risk their own lives – and others – on our roads.

A team of dedicated officers are continuing a week-long patrol to catch those who use their hand-held devices to text, call or surf the web while driving.

THe scheme, which started on Monday, saw offenders, if caught, receiving a £200 fine and six points on their licence. New drivers who have passed their test in the last two years have had their licences revoked. THey

are able to get their licence back if they pay for a new provisional licence and successfully take their theory and practical tests again.

THe offence remains one of the main causes of serious injury and fatal collisions, and all motorists are being urged to take note.

Superintendent Chris Moon, head of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: “It’s concerning that despite our repeated messaging around road safety, there are still a number of motorists who continue to use their phone while driving.

“It goes without saying that anyone driving a vehicle should give their full attention to the road."

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk DESPITE the wet weather, visitors flocked to Singleton to celebrate an ancient tradition.

THe Weald and Downland Living Museum invited visitors to learn the tradition of wassailing on Saturday.

As the word ‘wassailing’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon greeting ‘be in good health’, organisers held an orchard blessing for the harvest ahead.

A range of fun-filled wassail-themed craft activities were available.

An option to make it a full day’s celebration was possible with the special wassail Feast to be held when darkness fell.

THe special wassailing feast included

a torch-lit procession to the orchard at Bayleaf Farmstead, with song and short performances.

Visitors were able to join in with the ‘wassail’ shout and make lots of noise to bless the trees by singing and shooing away the bad spirits.

A blessing was also performed; slices of toast tied to apple tree branches and cider poured over the tree roots. THe ceremony is said to bless the trees to produce a good crop in the forthcoming season.

After the ceremony, the museum’s waterside Wattle & Daub café held a sumptuous four-course apple-themed feast.

Cllr Simon Oakley said: “I think we should always bear in mind the cumulative effect on our council tax payers in not only this preceptive authority’s increases but also others such as the police and county council.

"So I always hope that cabinet bears in mind the need to keep a lid on the growth of expenditure because of that cumulative impact.”

Cllr Josef Ransley said: "If I understood Cllr Oakley correctly, you are saying we should limit our expenditure and be aware of that made by other parties. I think it's part of this council's role to be prudent on how we manage our financial responsibilities and let residents decide on the value delivered by other authorities like the police or West Sussex County Council and I don't see that should inhibit what we do."

"I don't think many people will find that a burden and as you know we have one of the most generous schemes of council tax support in the county, if not in the south of England, so we do temper the wind to the shorn lamb."

THe decision was taken in connection with the council's financial strategy and plan for 2018/19. THe cabinet discussed the plan at their meeting in December.

Cllr Wilding said: "We are two years into our four-year agreed settlement with central government, so we have a degree of certainty over some parts of our funding stream until 2019/20.

"However, business rates, and much of our other income from car parks, planning fees etc. are largely dependent on the uncertain prospects of the wider economy.

"THe five-year financial model from early December has changed since then. Like any forecast, the financial model is subject to a number of uncertainties and risks."

Tangmere home owners sent letter

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS in Tangmere have received a letter stating Chichester District Council is considering making a compulsory purchase order.

THe correspondence stated that the compulsory purchase order would acquire land and interests in an area of land situated at Tangmere.

THe land is located to the north and west of Tangmere Road and south of the A27 Arundel Road.

THe intention is to bring forward a residential-led scheme which will provide 1,000 new homes and associated infrastructure, including a school, open space and community facilities.

Tangmere Parish Council chairman Andrew Irwin said: “THe letter is a standard letter relating to the expected compulsory purchase order process for bringing forward the land adjacent to Tangmere that has been allocated as a strategic development site.

“THe site is comprehensively covered by the Tangmere Neighbourhood Plan, which does not involve the purchase of any existing Tangmere houses. THe letter does ask residents to phone Chichester District Coucnil if there are any concerns, so my recommendation is for residents to gain the reassurance they need by talking to the author.”

THe letter received by residents states: “To enable the council to assess the

options available to it, and to specifically understand more about the overall land ownership position, the council (through a company called Persona Associates) will shortly be sending out formal notices requesting ownership information about your property.

“Persona Associates has been appointed to investigate who owns, occupies and gas interests in the land on which the scheme is to be built.

“THe issuing of the notices does not automatically mean your property will be required for the scheme as the council is also required to identify rights, easements and property interests which may be affected before making the formal proposals.”

A district council spokesman said: “We are working hard to try to bring forward much needed new homes on this area of land, as set out in Tangmere Parish Council’s Neighbourhood Plan and our Local Plan.

"As part of this work, we are currently collecting information about residents’ uses, access and property interests regarding this land. THis investigation largely relates to properties on the edge of the boundary.

"THis is nothing for residents to worry about, but we do ask that they respond to any communication that they receive so that their interests can be properly understood. A land reference company called Persona will be sending out a more formal letter in the coming weeks which will include a form for people to fill out and return. We are happy to chat to anyone who has received a letter.”

Choir celebrate first year with concert for hospice campaign HARBOUR Voices Community Choir gathered at St Paul’s Church in Chichester to raise money for St Wilfrid's Hospice DreamBuilding appeal.

THe event of choral delights, held on Saturday evening, celebrated the first anniversary of the Harbour Voices Community Choir, which was founded in January, 2017, by Pam Sweet and Ben Lathbury – who is also the choir’s musical director.

THe concert, which consisted of two 45 minute sets, included numbers from Les Miserables and THe Beatles, all of which were beautifully sung by over 80 members of the choir.

As reported in last weeks' Chichester Post, St Wilfrid's Hospice launched its DreamBuilding campaign just over a year ago to raise funds for its new hospice.

THe hospice's services have expanded so the current site in Donnington is no longer fit-forpurpose and the charity is now unable to meet growing demand for services.

THe new hospice will be made up of four buildings designed to separate the different services the charity offers with completion due in the first quarter of 2019.

THe evening raised over £2,000 for the DreamBuilding appeal.

New exhibitions created for the Military Aviation Museum

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk TWO NEW exhibitions have been curated at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

THe exhibits have been organised during the centre's annual closure period to visitors between December and January.

Following last summer’s successful Polish and Czech Pilot temporary exhibition, much of its contents have now been moved into a permanent exhibition in the Museum.

In the autumn of last year Rupert Ratcliff, son of No 161 Special Duties pilot Wing Commander Leonard Ratcliff, donated to the Museum his father’s medals, log books and other associated artefacts.

A new exhibition has been curated on this famous pick-up pilot who flew SOE Lysander and Hudson pick-up operations from RAF Tangmere.

THe museums Home Front exhibition has also been enlarged and refurbished to provide more information to visitors and for the numerous school visits the education team manages each year.

THe Museum’s engineers have been busy during the closed period removing the Sapphire engine from the Hawker Hunter F5 (WP190) to allow anticorrosion and conservation work to be

undertaken on the fuselage and engine.

THis task proved to be very difficult as the museum had no documentation on how the engine was secured and required the making of specific tools to release it from the fuselage.

THe museum’s simulator group have upgraded the computer for the Lightning cockpit simulator and the graphics

created will greatly enhance this ever popular visitor attraction.

A new cockpit will also be open to the public at the beginning of the season on February 1.

THe Provost T1 two-seater trainer cockpit enables visitors to sit side-byside and be instructed how to start up its engine, see the instruments come to life

and open the throttle ready to taxi.

THe museum’s curatorial team is busy planning the first of the 2018 events, a temporary exhibition over the Easter holidays on 100 years of the RAF and the opening of RAF Tangmere in 1918.

` Online safety tips PARENTS, carers and residents concerned about staying safe online are urged to go along to an internet safety event.

Being run alongside Safer Internet Day, the online safety drop-in event will give key advice to help residents keep themselves and their children safe online.

THe information will cover a range of useful topics including creating a strong password, keeping software up to date and staying in control of online profiles.

Debbie Kennard, county council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “THe internet is a fantastic resource which gives everyone the chance to connect, communicate and be creative.

However, it is also important, particularly for children and young people, to stay safe online.

Celebrations at the Eve of St Agnes event for Keats in Eastgate Square HUNDREDS of people attended St Pancras Church on Saturday evening.

THe ‘Eve of St Agnes’ - poetry and song event was held in celebration of John Keats' time in Chichester and 200 years of his poetry.

Participants gathered at 6pm at the statue of Keats in Eastgate Square for readings by lantern light and moved into St Pancras Church for warmth and refreshments, further readings, music and song.

attendees for their extraordinary and polished performances.

Pupils perform Auschwitz play

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE HEROIC actions of a mother who saved her son’s life by pushing him from a moving train bound for Auschwitz are to be remembered in Chichester.

A performance which re-tells the true story of Simon Gronowski’s escape from Nazi terror is being staged by more than 100 singers and musicians in the city’s cathedral on Saturday.

THe opera, PUSH, will be performed tomorrow to mark international Holocaust Memorial Day and remember those who died in concentration camps.

THe event starts at 7pm and has been organised by a committee including Dr Andrew Smith, a senior lecturer in contemporary history and politics at the University of Chichester.

He said: “Marking Holocaust Memorial Day is an important and meaningful act of public history.

"Commemorating those lost to this brutality is every bit as important as ensuring their vibrant memory prevents such acts ever being permitted again.

“THis event also reminds us of the terrible suffering in the world that persisted after 1945 and our vital duty

to continue humanitarian thought and action for all those in need.”

PUSH is inspired by the true story of Simon Gronowski, who, as an 11-yearold boy in 1943, was saved from Auschwitz concentration camp and later hidden from Nazi soldiers by strangers.

THe now 86-year-old, who will attend the performance, said: "My parents had made a mistake, only one, but a serious one, which was to have been born Jewish, a crime that, at the time, could only be punished by death.

"I speak about what happened to me so that you will protect freedom in your country.

"I speak to bear witness, to combat antisemitism, all forms of discrimination and Holocaust denial, to honour the dead and the heroes who saved my life.”

THree Chichester students will perform as vocal soloists, Lars Hendriksen, Ciaran O’Donovan, and Eleanor Farmer, accompanied by a chorus of 100 adults and children from nearby community choirs and schools alongside musicians from the University Chamber Orchestra.

STOMP in the right direction A SPECIAL lunch was held last Friday for STOMP. Sustainable Tourism On THe Manhood Peninsula (STOMP) is a study that has been undertaken by Professor Jorge Gutic of Chichester University.

Dr Gutic has been working on the study for at least six months and the Destination Management Plan (DMP) was launched at a lunch at Chichester Yacht Club.

THose who have contributed to the report were invited together with local county councillors and the new chairman of Visit Chichester, Craig Gershater.

Dr Gutic said: "I had a rather busy day with the launch event. THe event was quite well attended, with a number of a local parish councillors, community representatives, voluntary organisations

and local authorities in attendance.

"THis event formally launched a one month consultation period on the DMP." THe purpose of the STOMP project was to develop a new destination plan to replace the expired 2011–2015 plan, and support the formation of a new Manhood Tourism Management Partnership for the area.

THe project aim was to strengthen the sustainable rural tourism offer on the Manhood by supporting an increase in overnight and shoulder season visitor numbers and their associated spend.

THe STOMP Project also aimed to increase awareness and promotion of tourism experiences and amenities in order to attract visitors to the peninsula and encourage them stay for longer periods. For more information, visit: dmpfeedback.co.uk

Apprentices invited to celebrate success at special ceremony A SPECIAL graduation ceremony is being held for apprentices.

Apprentices who have completed a higher or advanced apprenticeship with a West Sussex employer at any point from January 1 to December 31, 2017, are invited to attend.

` Hello to ewe all EIGHT Jacob lambs have been born to five ewes, with the campus – part of the Chichester College Group – celebrating the arrival of three sets of twins and two single lambs.

Jacob sheep, known for their striking horns and black and white faces, are a rare breed of small sheep that have graced the fields of large estates and country homes across England for centuries.

Alison Bell, head of learning for animal care, equine and dog grooming at Brinsbury, said: “We are over the moon at our eight new arrivals. It’s been a busy couple of weeks for our team of students and staff at the animal centre, preparing for the lambs."

More lambs are expected at the Brinsbury farm in March – ready for the college’s Lambing Live season.

Lambing Live will be taking place at Brinsbury on March 10-11, from 10am-3pm. Visitors will be able to visit the newly-born lambs as they take their first steps down at the farm. To find out more visit: chichester.ac.uk

Wildlife hospital gets the go-ahead for new building

Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital, based in Sidlesham, submitted plans to Chichester Council in December to support its decision to build a new wildlife hospital extension.

THe plans were successful and the charity has been given permission to go ahead with the project.

THe hospital has been treating sick and injured wildlife for more than 45 years and over the years the site has undergone several essential redevelopments, but this is the biggest scheme to date.

Due to the ever-increasing number and variety of patients the charity is treating each year,

they now require the need to extend and recently had to turn patients away due to lack of space.

Supporter communications manager Asha Park said: "THe old hospital building will remain a working hospital ward, but having another new modern hospital will mean we can continue to treat more patients than ever before.

"THis will also provide a safer environment for our patients with increased infection control and quarantine areas, reducing the risk of spreading infection or disease.

Staff will benefit from having more space to work in a more efficient environment

and allows safe access to more local community volunteers.

"THe success of our project is determined by increased funding from the community.

With the project estimated to cost £400,000-£500,000" THe hospital are continually taking in wildlife throughout the year and currently have a large number of hedgehogs.

THe swan pictured below, crash- landed on the A27 causing small wounds on its face and feet. THey are also a common visitor the hospital as often when it rains, the birds see the surface water on the roads and mistake them for rivers.

An unusual visitor recently brought in was a fulmar bird which was found washed up in Bracklesham after it was taken out by a wave and blown inland.

As well as a new hospital, the charity also have plans to build several new outside enclosures, an education room and a reception area.

THe redevelopment will be staged in five phases, with hopes the first of the five-stage plans will start later this year, with a target to complete the final build of the hospital within three years.

New research on shopping

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS' shopping and leisure habits are being looked at as part of a new study.

THe retail needs study is currently taking place as part of Chichester District Council’s Local Plan Review.

THe council has commissioned the study which will include a telephone survey. THe survey started on January 15, and will take place over three weeks.

It is being carried out by NEMS Market Research and will take around seven and half minutes to complete.

Most calls will be made outside normal working hours in order to ensure that the working households can take part.

Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning at the district council, said: “We want to reassure residents that this isn't a scam and that the survey is being carried out lawfully, according to strict market research regulations.

“As part of the Local Plan Review, we want to look at retail and ensure that the needs of the future can be planned for and look at some of the issues affecting the retail sector in our district.

“THe study is using a variety of methods

to gather information and for those who choose to take part, this is an excellent opportunity to be involved in helping our district plan for the future.

"THe information provided will help give us a better understanding of how and where people like to shop and spend their leisure time.”

THe market researchers are aiming to

speak to around 700 residents in and around the district.

All information gained from the questions will remain confidential.

Information from the survey will be handled according to the eight Data Protection principles of good information handling practice, as required by the Data Protection Register.

Residents who receive a call are under no obligation to take part.

A YOUNG Dutch Herder dog has made a full recovery after being rescued from a van.

THe rescue was made on one of the hottest days of last year and his owner has now been dealt with by the courts.

Officers were called to the van, which had been parked unattended at THe Gatehouse public car park in Chichester Gate from at least 9am until 1.10pm on Tuesday, June 20.

Someone walking past had noticed that the van was shaking, and a dog was found inside in a major state of distress.

As officers arrived, the owner, who runs a security patrol company, returned to the vehicle. THe dog was taken straight to the local vet, seized from the owner and

placed into the care of the RSPCA. Rachid Serroukh, 39, from THe Elders, Littlebourne, near Canterbury, was charged with a responsible person failing to prevent the causing of unnecessary suffering to an animal as part of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

He was found guilty at Worthing Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced on January 10 to 70 hours of unpaid work and a £300 fine.

PC Martin George, of the Chichester investigations team, said: "THis dog is lucky to be alive and it is a sharp reminder to all drivers not to leave your dog in a hot car. We worked closely with the RSPCA and we are happy the dog has made a full recovery.”

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "We would like to remind people that in an emergency call 999 to report a dog in the hot car to the police."

PropertyNews ` Who earns more: you or your house?

ACCORDING to research, house prices have increased by more than the average salary in more than a quarter of districts across the UK. THis means that a lot of property owners will find that their home has earned more than they have!

Here in Chichester, average sold prices rose from £352,386 at the end of 2016 to £387,573 by November, 2017 - an increase of £35,187. THis is indeed more than both the national average salary (£27,600) and local average salary in Chichester (£27,926). THat creates a problem for those trying to save for a deposit to buy their own home; seeing as how ever much they saved they are now likely to be further away from their dream.

What is also striking is the relatively low average salary locally in Chichester compared to house prices, versus the rest of the country.

Consider that the average property price in the UK is £226,071, which is a little over eight times the average annual salary. Here in Chichester though, property prices are 71 per cent higher than the UK average, and yet the local average salary is only 1.2 per cent higher than the national average! THis means that property prices in Chichester are nearly 14 times the local average salary, which is why Chichester is often cited as one of the least affordable places to live.

THis was highlighted in August, 2009, with Chichester being labelled the second least affordable place to live in the country.

It seems, therefore, that Chichester has a history of outpacing the rest of the country with property price growth, homes becoming ever more unaffordable for local workers. Of course, if you’re already a homeowner or landlord in Chichester, you will have profited from these price rises.

An ever-strengthening demand from tenants who have been outpriced in the local market will also underpin returns.

` New polytunnels POLYTUNNELS which are more than 40 years old could be replaced at a Walberton nursery.

Planning permission to replace the two structures with a new polytunnel has been sought by Walberton Nursery in Yapton Lane.

Michael Tristram, of the nursery, says in a statement with the plans: "THe-two-old polytunnels were already in place in the mid-1970s when the land was purchased by Walberton Nursery for nursery operations, having been used for the same purpose by the previous owner.

"THe upgrade will enable a more efficient use of the growing space and more efficient use of water resources."

THe nursery's application also seeks to convert two outdoor growing beds into two polytunnels with a total area of 2,465sq m. THis was about the same as the beds they would be replacing, he added.

County set to increase tax COUNTY councillors are set to increase their share of council tax by nearly five per cent.

West Sussex County Council's cabinet is due to discuss the proposal next Tuesday. If approved, as expected, it will go to the full council on February 16. THe proposed rise will add 12.6p a week - or £6.50 a year - to the bill of a band D council tax payer.

But the council's leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith, has called for a long-term view from the government towards the funding of councils. Without that, she believed the future of vital services would be at risk.

Earlier this month, the Government offered the county council the chance to add a further one per cent to its share of the total council tax bill faced by homeowners across West Sussex.

THis was accepted by the council's performance and finance committee last THursday and forms part of the recommended budget to the cabinet.

Cllr Goldsmith said it had been 'incredibly hard' to recommend the increase to help to cope with the rising demand for care services such as child protection and adult social care.

"It is against all my instincts for me to consider taking the incredibly hard decision to raise council tax when I know some residents are struggling with their own finances.

"But it would also be against my instincts for me not to offer the high quality services our residents deserve.

"THis decision would mean that vital services can continue to be run and be developed without us having to make extremely difficult decisions about the future of some of those services we

know our residents rely on.

"One way or another, there is little part of life in West Sussex that we are not responsible for or involved in.

"None of this we do lightly. But we need to plan, we need to be able to continue to evolve and grow as the issues and demands change and we simply can't do that with a short-term view of our finances.

"It is wrong for us, and county councils across the country, to continue to have to be reliant on taxing our residents in the current piecemeal way every year to attempt to plug the gap left by central government."

"We have played our part well when Government asked us to and taken more than 30 per cent out of our budget at exactly the same time as demand and need rises," said Cllr Goldsmith.

"It's time that the Government supports us with a properly funded long-term settlement that enables us to plan and prepare for the challenges we know are ahead and, in particular, to help our growing elderly population.

"We are not alone in West Sussex. THis is a national problem that deserves a national answer. I, and many other council leaders, have been asking for years for a long-term solution to local government finances."

Agreeing the proposed budget would enable the county council to put into place proposals to tackle homelessness, by working with other councils to increase the number of temporary rooms, improve road safety, and accelerate programmes on solar power as well as its current work with care, roads, schools and fire and rescue, Cllr Goldsmith added.

Station merges old and new A STATION fit for a king has been created for Bognor Regis, the town's MP has said.

Nick Gibb said the makeover of the terminus was the start of huge changes. Disused parts of the building would be used again later this year.

"When I come to Bognor Regis station, I think about the hundreds of thousands of excited children who arrive here to start their summer holidays beside the seaside whether at Butlin's, in a B&B or with their elderly aunt in Felpham or Middleton.

"I think about the evacuees who arrived here during the war to escape the dangers of the Blitz in London, some of whom have moved here.

"I think further back to King George V and Queen Mary, who arrived at this station with great pomp and ceremony to spend a holiday with their friends at Craigweil House in Aldwick.

"THis work has preserved the station's

Edwardian heritage as well as looking to the future with the creative digital hub that will be opened soon."

Other dignitaries at the celebration ceremony last Friday were Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, Cllr Phil Hitchins, Arun District Council chairman Jacqui Pendleton, Arun's chairman of Bognor Regis regeneration, Cllr Phil Hitchins, and Paul Childs, the company secretary of the Railway Heritage Trust.

A performance by the Aldingbourne Trust charity, which has close links with Southern, began the event with Beside the Seaside.

Paul Best, Southern's project manager, said the station's cafe and news shop were being marketed. "Nobody has come forward with firm offers yet but there has been quite a lot of interest from local businesses," he said. THe clock would be repaired but needed a lot of work.

` Aldwick grants MORE than £5,000 has been awarded

by Aldwick parish councillors to organisations which benefit its residents.

THe total of £5,110 was spread among 11 groups and ranged from £75 to £1,000.

THe highest amount was given to Sammy Community Transport and the Nautical Training Corps - TS Montrose, with £1,000 each.

Others to benefit from the council's latest annual grants were: Rose Green Infant School PTA, Victim Support, Arun and Chichester Citizen's Advice, Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts, Willowhale Community Association, Bognor Regis Town Youth FC, West Sussex Mediation Service, Girl Guiding (Bognor Regis West) and Bognor Regis Local History Society.

Councillors have also agreed to award two further grants. One for £500 has gone to Rose Green Junior School towards the refurbishment of its assembly hall.

THe other is £300 to the committee of Bognor Regis Armed Forces Day towards the hire of a stage and PA equipment.

DARREN JUDD has applied for planning approval to open a microbrewery in Bognor Regis.

He is seeking planning permission to change the use of an empty shop of 40 sq m at Unit 4, Blake House, in the High Street, into the new business.

He expects the micro-brewery will employ one full-time and two part-time staff if he receives the go-ahead from Arun District Council.

County council leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith: "THis is a fantastic step forward for Bognor Regis and another piece in the jigsaw of years of hard work of developing Bognor Regis as a place which nurtures innovation and supports businesses and creativity."

News about the hub's progress came as a ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the £2.5m scheme to give the station the biggest makeover since it

opened in 1902.

THe work has brought the present into the past by paying homage to the landmark's Edwardian heritage and its status as a Grade II-listed building. Its listing was achieved in 1989 by Bognor Regis resident Greg Burt, below right, when the building was set to be replaced.

Renovating the station was a joint project between Southern's parent company, Govia THameslink Railway, Arun District Council, Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust.

Other major changes have included: * A regenerated square outside the station and new canopy * New windows, concourse floor and brickwork * New ticket office designed to

match the former bookshop * New cafe, taxi office and newsagents * THe first waiting room for many years * New customer information screens and signs * A heritage-style barrier between concourse and platforms * Better station lighting and upgraded CCTV for improved security Lucinda Valentine, Network Rail's scheme sponsor, said: "THe work at Bognor Regis station is a shining example of the rail industry working in partnership with other organisations to deliver a better, more modern railway for passengers while have also protected railway heritage."

Pupils back charity with costumes A FORENSIC scientist, a Minion and a sufragette were among the characters who took part in a Westergate school's charity event.

THe costumes were worn by students and staff at Ormiston Six Villages Academy to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

THe student winner was Georgia MayCooper, who came dressed as the scientist to reflect the career she is seeking and she received an Amazon voucher for her excellent efforts.

THe runners-up were Charlie Hobbs - a Minion to reflect his ambition to become an animator; Pacey Baker - who dressed as a film-maker/director; Finlay Glasspool a gamekeeper; and Nathaniel MolineauxInglis (a scientist).

THeir outfits best reflected the theme of inspiring people and aspiration for the future by representing a job they would like to do or which was related to a person who inspires them.

Some of the other career roles seen around the academy included wouldbe writer Chelsea O'Neill, who went as a feline character from an idea for a book, and Liam Richards, who was a boxer.

THeir imaginations enabled £872 to be raised for the charity.

Umbar Sharif, the academy's principal, said: "I'm so proud of all our students who

contributed to this fantastic fundraising effort.

"THey've all worked so hard for the day to be a success."

THe money was raised after Year 11 students, Katie Wilds and Maisie White, organised the event at the Lime Avenue academy.

For the staff, associate assistant principal drama Emma Molineaux-Inglis went dressed as sufragette Emmeline Pankhurst and associate assistant principal head of arts Daniel Munt went in as a conductor and Chris Marsh, the associate assistant principal humanities, fulfilled his ambition as a five-year-old of being a coal miner.

Just before the event, the academy was delighted by an offer from Colin Racine, owner of Collins Carpets and Flooring in Rustington, to match the donations raised by students.

He said: "THis is a charity I am extremely keen to support and which carries out fantastic work in helping people living with cystic fibrosis, along with conducting vital research work to improve people's quality of life.

"It's wonderful that so many pupils embraced the chance to support this charity and had fun dressing up for the day."

REPAIRS are being planned to a car park in Rose Green.

Places for People are said to be compiling a programme of work for the large site at the Willowhale community site.

THe news was given by Cllr John Bass to Aldwick Parish Council's latest meeting after he met the housing association a few days earlier.

"I raised the matter of having the car park resurfaced and relined," he said. "THey agreed and said they would be looking to see how quickly they could resurface it.

"THe signs are so bad there is going to be an accident there."

THe one-way markings at the site, off Pryors Lane were worn away, he said. THe car park, with scores of spaces, serves the parish council offices, Willowhale Library, Willowhale Community Centre and Grove House Surgery.

Cllr Bass also said Places for People were set to bring in a permit system to enable residents to park in the area.

"THere are a lot of people parking in their spaces who are not residents around here. Places for People are to issue free permits for the people who live in its properties to enable their vehicles to be identified.

Young carers' support backed A BOGNOR REGIS school has been one of the first in the county a trial a scheme to recognise young carers.

THe learning resource pack was put together by young carers to raise awareness of their roles and what schools can do to help.

THe Regis School was among the initial schools to use the pack.

Katie Robinson, its team leader for personal, social, health and citizenship education, said: "It has been particularly helpful for the pastoral team in our school who are often the first point of contact for students.

"As students, I think it will help them identify if they are a 'young carer' and, if so, there is extra support available

A DECADE of moonlight walking in Chichester is being celebrated this year.

St Wilfrid's Hospice wants to make the occasion on May 5 even more special than usual.

THe aim is to break some records, with 1,000 people walking and £100,000 raised.

It is seeking volunteers to help to turn its plans into reality.

Hospice head of fundraising Jerry Doyle said: "It literally is a night to remember so don't forget to put it in your diaries.

"We want to thank everyone for their support. As well as being very moving, the

Walkers will be able to sign up soon at stwh.co.uk/moonlight. Entry costs £16 and walkers get a T-shirt and goodies like a heart-warming snack breakfast.

THe hospice hopes to start the night with a light show around the Westgate Leisure Centre where people gather to take part in the 5k or 10k walk to support the hospice in memory of loved ones.

Helpers are needed on the night for all aspects of the occasion. THese range from marshalling walkers along the route to helping to run stalls, signing in

A young carer is someone who is affected by the health needs of a relative. THere are hundreds of young carers across West Sussex who look after loved ones. But many go unnoticed.

THe West Sussex Young Carers Service has developed the pack to enable teachers to introduce what can be a sensitive subject to raise in schools. It also includes young carer information for staff, lesson plans and a short film.

All the county's secondary schools have access to the information pack.

IN February popular choir group THe Sixteen are embarking on a tour of the UK with its own period instrument orchestra and will be making a stop at Chichester Cathedral for one night only.

THey will be performing one of Vivaldi’s most loved hymn settings, Gloria, along with other pieces of the Baroque period.

Composed in Venice, in the early 18th century, for the choir of the Ospedale

della Pietà, Gloria is well known for its wonderfully sunny nature and distinctive melodies and rhythms that give it an immediate and universal appeal. THe choir and orchestra will also perform the work of other composers such as Bach and Handel. Bach was a fierce admirer of Vivaldi’s work, and his extraordinarily inventive Mass in G major complements the Gloria perfectly.

PICTURE this - Lavender Bay, adjacent to Sydney Harbour Bridge, standing outside the renowned Sails Restaurant with a glass of 2006 Gosset Grand Millésime à la main, so to speak, - fondest memories of fine dining in fine company (including native Sydneysiders Melinda and Blake) and a delectable French Champagne that regaled my palate given its freshness, crispness and great structure (all three elements enhanced by the absence of malolactic fermentation) and, moreover, oozed lemon zest, crisp grapefruit and delicious acidity.

THis excellent vintage combines richness, elegance, complexity and finesse to fully justify its retail price of circa £63!

Back to Blighty and re-connecting to winter time, one must never discount (in the primary sense of the verb) either Aldi or Lidl in the quest for reasonablypriced, but good quality wines. Off I duly headed, in intrepid fashion, to a Lidl store and commenced perusal of their white wine selection.

I wended my way to the remnants

of the Christmas Wine Cellar, as their Wine Cellar represents best purchases and, for an outlay of just £4 99, was able to procure a 2016 Cirò Bianco made from predominantly Greco Bianco, a white grape variety brought to Calabria by the Ancient Greeks.

THis fragrant wine is fresh and dry and would pair well with either risotto or salad and is worth a punt! My next pick was a 2016 Coonawarra Chardonnay priced at £5.79 of South Australian provenance in the heart of the Limestone Coast and this wine proved to be a perfectly palatable Chardonnay with citrus, red apples and tropical fruits to the fore and green melon and

pineapple on the palate.

For £5.99, the 2016 Abellio Albariño Riàs Baixas made by Bodegas Gallegas in the Sainès zone of Riàs Baixas on the extreme north-west of Atlantic Spain is fresh and fruity with an apple peel and citrus nose added to a hint of salt and is dry with gluggy fruit and a good mouthfeel!

Back to Lidl's core range, a 2016 Mâcon-Villages for £6.75 is a smooth, slightly buttery tropical and apple flavoured Burgundy eminently quaffable on its own, but also a fine accompaniment to a roast chicken dish.

I think all of us parents would agree that it’s a lifetime’s work to keep your children strong and healthy, and I am always trying to come up with new ways to keep them interested in eating healthy foods. Anyone who has teenagers knows this can sometimes be a challenge! But a happy healthy teenager means happier, less stressed parents.

Nutritional yeast has been around forever, but seems to be creating a bit of a ‘buzz’ again at the moment. It is a great flavour that can liven up any dish, but what exactly is it?

Nutritional yeast is a non-active, cultured strain of yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae, to be exact). It looks like yellow fish food flakes, is not overly attractive, but punches a good amount of cheesy flavour and goodness. It can be found in most natural food stores and is usually grown on

molasses, deactivated with heat, and dried into the flake form. Still not selling it to you?

It's often enriched with vitamin B12, which is only found naturally in animal products like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products, so for vegans or vegetarians who don't consume animal products, nutritional yeast can be a great replacement.

It is also a fabulous source of the B vitamins riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and folic acid, which (depending on the brand) can provide more than 100 percent of your daily-recommended value of most of these B vitamins in a one tablespoon serving.

Nutritional yeast serves up about 3g of highquality protein per 20 calorie serving and it contains all nine essential amino acids, which are required in the diet to build protein.

Community News & Views YOUNG people with special educational needs or disabilities will be able to receive support at an event in Chichester about finding a first job.

Teenagers over the age of 14 and their parents and carers have been invited to the First Steps to Adulthood open evening next Monday. THe event has been organised by West Sussex County Council and the West Sussex Parent Carer Forum.

Its aim is to provide young people with advice and guidance in advance of the time they left full-time education. As well as jobs, it will include general information about becoming more independent.

Cllr Richard Burrett, the county council's cabinet member for education and skills, pictured below, said: "We hope that the event will give young people ideas and information about the different opportunities available to them after they leave school and help them to think about the routes they may follow into the world of work and towards independence.

"THis is a chance to have questions answered on the big lifestyle choics such as employment and housing.

"Whether you want to find out about future jobs or get to know the housing market a bit better - this is a must-see event for you."

THe drop-in will take place from 6pm-8pm in Chichester College's conference hall in Westgate Fields.

It follows similar events last year in Worthing and Horsham.

THeir success has encouraged more than 30 organisations to make the latest occasion the biggest to date.

THe parent carer forum is a support group formed to help improve the lives of children and young people aged up to 25 with extra needs. Helen Merrick, its post 16 and mental health lead, said: "Talking to parent carers and their families, it became apparent that families and young people want information on the options available to them when moving on from school."

GREEN Party members in Bognor Regis and Chichester have responded with dismay to the Government's 25-year environmental plan.

Along with other environmental organisations, the Green Party believes the plan is worthless until it includes definite legislation to ensure its aims are carried through.

Isabel THurston, the group's spokeswoman, said: "THis Government, and many before it, have proved that all their fine words are swept away the minute there is a choice between the environment and profit. Equally, the target dates of 2040 are far too long. For many of our ecosystems, especially our oceans, too much damage has already been done.

"People are becoming aware of how much damage is being done, for example, by plastics and to allow 25 years for things to be done differently is irresponsible. THere are already alternatives to plastic that can be used for packaging."

West Sussex County Council's go-ahead this month for more flow testing at oil sites in the county went directly against the need to use less fossil fuels as the move was made towards a lower carbon economy in accordance with the government's global commitment, she said.

Chichester councillor Sarah Sharp is staging an air pollution survey in the city.

She said: "People want cleaner buses and safe cycle lanes and are beginning to see the link between our unhealthy reliance on the private car and how investing so much in road building is damaging our own well-being and our countryside.

"A combination of the community congestion charge and workplace parking levies enable councils to invest in public transport creating significant incentives for behavioural change, tackling congestion and air pollution within towns and cities.

"THe principle 'it should be cheaper to catch a bus than drive and park' is absolutely key."

SAILING trips around Chichester Harbour are on offer for people with dementia.

THe Sail Boat Project, pictured above, has teamed up with Dementia Adventure to organise the journey for Sussex residents.

Subsidised places are on offer for people living with dementia and a family member, carer or friend to join them on a half-day taster sail in the harbour or to arrange a bespoke sailing trip of one to seven days along the south coast.

THe work is supported by grants from Sussex Community Foundation and the Royal Southern Yacht Club.

Sail Boat Project skipper Ben Gillett said: "We hope to create lasting memories for people with dementia.

"THese trips will give people with dementia the opportunity to have engaging experiences in a safe environment with their family or carers, who will also

benefit from the new and exciting experience."

THe project's commercially endorsed skippers will be helped by two volunteers on each trip. Each will have been trained in working with people with dementia by Dementia Adventure.

Sail Boat Project is a workers' co-operative working from Chichester Harbour to widen access to sailing.

It is a Royal Yachting Association sail training centre and a RYA sailability organisation.

Dementia Adventure is the UK champion for outdoor activity holidays for people living with dementia.

Rewards for those who do include sailing activities for staff and clients.

KEEN photographers will be able to hear the exploits of a top snapper at one of his rare talks.

World-renowned landscape photographer Charlie Waite will be holding his annual charity lecture at Middleton Camera Club.

He contacted the club after he saw one of its previous temporary displays in THe Arcade and offered to allow it to host the lecture.

It will take place at 7.30pm on April 30 at St Nicholas Church in Elmer Road, Middleton. Tickets are priced £10 each from middletoncameraclub.weebly.com Every penny which is taken will go to the Disabled Photographers' Society.

"THey are a truly inspirational group who have overcome sometimes challenging disabilities to produce some brilliant photography," said Ms Phillips.

"We are putting together whatever skills we have between us to put on a great event."

Tickets went on sale on November 1 but they sold out within a week to photographers from as far afield as Eastbourne, Guildford and Portsmouth. THis led the club to move to the current larger venue.

Mr Waite is a photographer who is passionate about the importance of engaging the landscape through photography.

His lectures are well-known for their humour and grace and take the audience on a colourful and enchanting journey.

THey are highly illustrated and the enjoyment members of the audience gain from the memorable occasions have been known to inspire many of them to explore the natural world further, with or without a camera.

He was walking through THe Arcade last summer visiting relatives in the area when he saw the display and admired the work on show and the club's initiative in using some empty shopfronts.

Some of the camera club members braved the winter weather to put their work on show on Bognor Regis seafront, pictured below.

THey decided to stage their latest 'pop up' exhibition in the promenade bandstand.

One of those involved, Lyn Phillips, said: "We were lucky in picking a beautiful Saturday unlike the Sunday that followed.

"Our intention was, as always, to introduce our club to local folk but, on this occasion, we really wanted to promote the talk."

SHARON HURST gave a fascinating demonstration at Bognor Regis Art Society's first demonstration of the year.

Sharon, pictured above in the early stages of her painting, showed how to create a wonderful picture of crashing waves in watercolour.

She revealed her secrets on blending colours to produce paintings with great depth.

She will return to the art society at 2pm tomorrow for a

workshop.

As well as trying to recreate her crashing waves, she will be encouraging the art society's members to draw or paint seashells.

THe session will be at the Jubilee Hall, off Chalcraft Lane, North Bersted.

THose who go along should take their own materials.

Sharon worked in watercolours but artists who like other media are welcome to use them.

SMALL charities and community groups across West Sussex are urged to ensure they apply to the final round of a funding scheme.

West Sussex County Council's community initiative fund provides grants targeted at supporting communities to deliver projects in their area.

THe scheme aims to encourage residents to be active, connect with each other, develop, learn and give back to their community.

Awards range from £1,000 to £5,000.

A total of £371,091 was awarded to good causes in the council's last full year to last March - and time is running up to make a claim for the cash in its current year.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the council's cabinet member for stronger, safer communities, said: "Many individuals and groups have benefited in the past from these grants and I would strongly encourage anyone who needs the support to apply.

"We are so proud of the work in our communities and are making it easier for groups to access this support."

Grant applications are considered at county local committees.

South Chichester and Eastern Arun still have funds available.

THe deadline for South Chichester is January 31 to be debated on February 20 and, for Eastern Arun, it is February 6 to be decided on March 6.

Cllr Kennard urged anyone who wanted to apply in the future to attend their local committee - the Bognor Regis committee meets on February 28 - to find out about the changes in how to apply.

Selsey inventor created humane mousetraps

COLIN PULLINGER, born 1814, was a local inventor from Selsey, most famous for his humane and perpetual mousetraps.

Although most known for his inventions, his business card listed many more occupations, ‘inventor, fisherman and mechanic, following the various trades of builder, carpenter, joiner, undertaker… boat builder…mender of glass and china…land measurer…repairer of clocks and keys…’. Other occupations Pullinger claimed were collector of taxes, accountant and repairer of umbrellas.

He was born in Ivy Cottage, Selsey, but after his father, William Pullinger, died in 1846, he inherited his home, workshop, land and carpentry business.

In around 1860, Pullinger invented his first humane perpetual mousetrap. THe design of the mousetrap centred on a see-saw mechanism. A mouse would smell the bait and enter the trap from above, crawling onto a beam. THis beam is balanced on top of a seesaw, and has a central partition.

THe mouse then only has the option of going to one side, right or left. THe see-saw tilts in the same direction, and the central partition traps them inside that section.

THe mouse can then only go further in, and goes through another one-way gate, trapping the mouse in the space at the end, but doing no harm to the mouse itself.

THe see-saw rocks back and is therefore set for the next mouse. Part of Pullinger’s advertising campaign claimed that he could trap 28 mice in one trap, and that a farmer had caught nearly 1,000 mice in one trap over nine months.

His business continued to grow and he concentrated on the popular contraptions.

In the 1861 census, his son, Charles, was described as a ‘mouse-trap maker’, and he employed three men and 15 boys to make mousetraps. Eventually, Pullinger employed around 40 people, and was one of the biggest employers in Selsey at the time.

wood from the Goodwood Estate forests belonging to the Duke of Richmond. THe factory had horse-powered machinery, which enabled them to be able to assemble a mouse trap in four and a half minutes. In the late 1800s, they were producing nearly 1,000 traps a week, and by 1885 had sold two million traps.

After Colin Pullinger died in 1889, Charles continued to make mousetraps until the business closed in 1920. THe invention of the backbreaker mousetrap that sold for a penny meant the Pullinger humane and perpetual mousetraps went out of business. However, a testament to the longevity of the mousetrap comes from the Museum of English Rural Life in Berkshire. A Pullinger perpetual mousetrap that was in the museum store and is 155 years old, managed to catch a mouse even without any bait.

THe Pullinger factory, known as ‘THe Inventive Factory’, is now the site of the Selsey Town Council offices. In 2015, the Novium Museum hosted an event in acknowledgement of Colin Pullinger called ‘THe 24 Hour Inventive Factory’, when we opened up the museum for 24 hours to artists and members of the public to take over the museum in a series of creative spaces.

Goodwood revs up to host circuit's PostSport first running festival this autumn THOUSANDS of runners are set to hare around the Goodwood motor track for a race with a difference.

Forget the revving engines and smoking tyres, the hallowed tarmac will host up to 5,000 athletes as the Chichester venue hosts its first Running Festival.

Taking place on Sunday, October 14, 2,000 spots are available for the half marathon, with a further 3,000 in the 10k.

An event aimed at younger runners will also be announced shortly, with organisers claiming it will be a celebratory day of running for runners of all ages and abilities.

THe race will not be the first for the Goodwood track - with Chichester Atheltics Club organising a succesful Midsummer 5k around the circuit every year.

Race director Joe Williams said: “It has been a long time in the planning and we are thrilled to be able to host our first running festival at such a beautiful and memorable venue.

"THe facilities at Goodwood are second-tonone and we hope that many runners will take the opportunity to race at one of the UK’s best-known estates.

"With the option of a 10k and a half

marathon, we are looking forward to welcoming runners of all abilities to the event in October.

"Discounted early bird entries are available so now is the perfect time to sign up and have a fantastic new event to look forward to.”

Last weekend's 13 miler was a big temperature swing for Grace and Derek Natoli, who ran in the Doha half marathon last weekend. Grace powered on to achieve a personal best half marathon time of 1 hour 58 minutes. Claire Baker was also in fine form as she took more than10 minutes off her previous best time to finish in 1:57.

Next up and continuing this trend was Neil Pacey with a PB of 1:53. First home for the club and also running a PB was Andy Mair, who crossed the line in 1:36.

DARTS: Rob Collins fired a 170 in-shot as THe Legends sank the QE2 in week 16 of the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out Darts League.

BOGNOR REGIS Swimming Club made quite a splash at the first competitive event of 2018.

THe squad have been training hard at their base in THe Arena sports centre.

Hopes were high ahead of the first contest of the season just down the road in Littlehampton for the Splash Meet.

THe squad did not disappoint - coming home with a range of medals from the competitive racing.

In total, the squad swam 65 times and recorded 44 personal bests - meaning twothirds of all swims were record breaking.

Coaches said within the swims there were seven county qualifying times.

Among the standout performers were Leo Mitchell, who won four silver medals, and Amber Macrae, who bagged a bronze.

Speaking after the event, Jan Malpas, of the swimming club, said: "What an excellent start to 2018!"

Bognor Regis Swimming Club offers

competitive swimming training run by qualified teachers and coaches.

THe club was founded in 1965, and since that time has continued to provide swimming coaching for novices through to national standard competitive swimmers.

During the week, the club runs training sessions that are split into different squads based on the ability of a swimmer.

Most start out in Starfish, which caters for those fresh out of swim school who can travel 50 metres and dive in the pool from the blocks.

It progresses through to Marlins, which is the youth squad where swimmers will usually be over 14.

THere is even space for older enthusiasts in the masters category, where the only necessity is being able to swim lengths.

Cup final awaits City as Chi use week off to focus on Vase

Battered Blues slip up again CHICHESTER RFC's hunt for a first win of 2018 will see them taken on familiar foes on familiar territory.

THe battered and bruised Blues squad has struggled in recent weeks as injuries have caught up with Scott Ashley's squad.

Last weekend's 26-12 defeat away at Cobham was Chi's third defeat in a row.

While the Blues remain fourth and competitive, they have now lost touch with the leaders in London Division One South. But, with plenty of pride still to pay for until the end of the season, Chi will hope to find that form again tomorrow against Gravesend at Oaklands Park (2pm).

Speaking after the Cobham match, club spokesman Roger Gould said: "With all their injuries, the Blues were up against it but they competed and a deserved losing bonus point was snatched from them in the last minute.

"Chi have now lost three consecutive games while Cobham have won their last four, including the scalps of London Cornish and Brighton."

Despite a bright start for Chi, it was the Surrey side who

were first to strike, heading into a 13-0 lead. In response, Chi pushed forward and, from a Nick Blount line-out catch, they drove and passed until big Joe Woods plunged over in typical style.

Winger Ben Robson then got in the action. Tom Hutchin sent an excellent high kick to the left wing, and Robson was there to jump, catch and cross for a well-worked try.

Cobham hit back and slotted home another penalty to make it 16-12 at the break.

In the second period, Chi were unable to break down a stubborn defence and were cruelly denied a losing bonus point when the hosts crossed for a score in the final moments.

Chi can take heart from the performances of 18-year-old back rower Tyrese Makasi and Scott Bentley, both of whom made bright Blues debuts. * Bognor RFC will be looking to keep up the pressure at the top of Hampshire One as they head to Fordingbridge tomorrow (2pm).

THe Purple and Greens will be keen to bounce back to winning ways after suffering an 18-10 reverse at Chipstead in the cup last weekend.

CHICHESTER City's quest for silverware rolls on as the Lillywhites continue fighting on all four fronts.

With three months of the season remaining, Miles Rutherford's side sit fourth in the SCFL Premier, primed for a promotion push as the season draws to an end.

But there remains other distractions for the Oaklands Park side - namely the FA Vase, where they have progressed to the last 16 of the national knockout competition for the first time. Cup competitions closer to home are also on the radar.

On Tuesday, two Scott Jones goals secured a 2-0 victory over Broadbridge Heath in the semi-final of RUR cup, setting up a final against local rivals Pagham. A quarter-final against league leaders Haywards Heath in the Peter Bentley Cup also beckons (Feb 6, 7.45pm).

But all eyes at Oaklands are on the Vase, which will take Chi on a 480-mile round trip to play 1874 Northwich next Saturday (Feb 3, 3pm). With a week off before their trip to Cheshire, Chi have time to regroup and plan how they are going to attack the final 12 weeks of the campaign.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea has played down expectations at Nyetimber Lane despite the Lions being primed to pounce for a promotion place.

Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds have overseen a season of change at the SCFL Premier club.

Despite a number of players leaving, they have put together a young team who this week beat Newhaven 2-0 to seal a spot in the final of the RUR cup.

With the Lions also placed fifth in the league, just two points off second, it is gearing

up to be a thrilling end of the season for all those following Pagham.

But despite the Lions' progress, the chairman down played any talks over promotion from step five football.

Shea said: "THe target from my point of view was that we have to finish in the top half as that’s where we were last year.

"Richie and Tom may have their own targets in mind but, for me,, I just want to finish as high as possible "If that means winning the league, then fantastic."

Pagham sealed their spot in the RUR final thanks to second-half strikes from Lloyd Rowlatt and Dan Simmonds.

Next up is a home clash with East Preston tomorrow (2pm).

THe Lions are also yet to hear from the Sussex FA on the results of an investigation into why the Senior Cup quarter final against Horsham a fortnight ago was postponed.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey face a tough task as they head to league leaders Little Common tomorrow (3pm) for a match at THe Oval in Eastbourne.

THat will be followed up on Tuesday with a trip to Midhurst on Tuesday (7.45pm).

THe Blues lost ground on the teams around them last weekend as their match away at St Francis Rangers fell victim to the weather.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham will be looking to get their season back on track as they welcome Ferring to the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side have not won since late November and have slipped to fourth, six points behind league leaders Roffey.

In the same division, Bosham's unbeaten run continues as they welcome Rottingdean Village to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins beat Montpelier Villa last time out 3-1 thanks to goals from Bradley Miles, Alex Barnes and Graeme Dowden.

THat means Bosham have lost only once in their last nine matches.

College Ladies seal first win of season CHICHESTER College’s Female Football Academy were celebrating this week, after recording their first win of the season against Brighton-based BHASVIC. THey travelled to the Withdean Stadium on Wednesday with a point to prove, having been beaten at home earlier this season.

THanks to second half goals from Alex Collighan and Alice Walford, Chi made the trip back along the coast with a 2-1 victory in the bag.

Speaking after the match, manager Matt Wright,who also manages Chichester City Ladies, said: “It was great to see the girls playing the style of football we have been striving towards.

"Although the result is a great bonus, the

true success came from the girls playing the best football we have seen so far this season.

“Every player at the college is on a journey as an individual and as part of the team.

Pearce: Bognor's fortunes will not change with new manager Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes there's no quick fix to reverse the fortunes of the relegation-threatened Rocks.

In an era when the easy option for clubs higher up the football pyramid is to change the man at the top, the long-serving stalwart vowed to keep on calling the shots at Nyewood Lane.

It comes as Bognor suffered another home defeat last weekend, this time a 3-0 loss to tenman Wealdstone.

It means the Rocks, who have not won at home in the league since August, remain second bottom of National South.

THey travel to Hungerford Town tomorrow (3pm) in desperate need of three points if they are to drag themselves clear of the drop.

Pearce, who has been involved in the running of the club for nearly 50 years, said: "THe only way to change a bad run like this is by having a group of players in good spirits, who don’t fear failure and want to work hard.

"I don’t think anyone can say they are not trying. I have been here 48 years and they have been working as hard as any side I've had.

"We do need someone who's a good central striker but there's no escaping that this is a very difficult league" As if to highlight Bognor's predicament, Pearce said that Saturday's victors had a budget that was more than twice that of his own side.

While the Rocks have been looking in every corner of the country for a striker to lead the line, Wealdstone boasted a number nine who reportedly cost £17,000 when he moved to the west London side.

But Pearce said the search went on - as does the need to keep on building on a run of performances which have seen the Rocks dominate possession but not score the goals that perhaps their performances have deserved.

Pearce said: "We have to keep going and have faith in the players we have while looking to strengthen where we can. Whether it's with me as a manger or another one in charge, the problems with getting players will not change.

"It’s always been a problem to find not only the quality but also those available with the budget that we have and the location that we are in."

THe Rocks will make the trip to Berkshire with a number of key players still missing.

Ollie Pearce, James Crane, Corey Heath, Chad Field and Keaton Wood remain on the treatment table while Ben Swallow and young French midfielder Richard Gilot were suspended for the Wealdstone match.

Hungerford sit 14th in the 22-team division and are in good form, winning three of their past four in the league. Former Reading striker Nick Bignall is a threat while Louie Soares keeps Town's midfield ticking.

Rocks' faithful give Crane lift LONG-SERVING Rocks defender James Crane has said he has been shocked and overwhelmed by the generosity of Bognor fans after they dug deep to fund a shoulder operation.

THe left-sided defender has been out of action since he fell awkwardly in the 2-2 draw against Gloucester City in September.

After being told he would have to wait for the summer to have the operation, the Rocks supporters club led a fundraising charge.

THanks to donations collected at Saturday's match against Wealdstone, more than £1,800 was collected in less than a week towards the £4,200 surgery.

It means Crane, who's been with the club for the last nine seasons, can get the operation done in the coming weeks, meaning he could be fit by the end of the campaign.

Crane, who writes a fortnightly column for the Post, said: "I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of the fans. It shows what a great club we have got and the loyalty is amazing.

"It means everything and sums up why I have stayed at the club for so long. THe fans are integral to the whole club. I can't wait to get back on the pitch and repay the fans by contributing to keeping us in the league."

THE PAST two weeks have seen two contrasting defeats for the club.

Even though we lost the Leyton Orient game there were a lot of positives to take from it.

THe way we got back into it with ten men was a real boost, particularly when you think of how it was done through that goal by Jimmy Muitt.

It was one of the best goals I have seen. After that high, to go into extra time and then lose was difficult to take but, on the whole, it was a performance to be proud of, the type of performance we have not shown for a while.

After that high in front of a good crowd against National League opponents everyone was looking forward to the next fixture.

Unfortunately, things did not go to plan against Wealdstone.

With that first goal you can't help but feel sorry for Scutty who with that header must have had a momentary lapse of concentration. THen, in the second half, their second goal was soft and the third was against the run of play.

A lot of people looking at the result on paper would think that we simply fell by the wayside. But we had good chances and gave them two goals.

On reflection, we were far better than them. While they are doing OK in the league they are not the best team we will play so that does give us hope moving forward.

In terms of Scutty, like I said, I did feel for him after that header went in.

It's hard when things like that happen for a young player breaking into the team.

During and directly after the match, you could see the moment was still quite raw and was quite emotional. So at that point all you can do is take him to one side and say 'keep your head up'.

By the time the end of week came though, a couple of lads were taking the mickey out him all in good jest.

No one was blaming him and away from the group, a couple of us, like Sami or I, will have a quiet chat with and ask him to make up for it in another match. It's not his fault that we lost the game. He's a strong character and he will be back stronger, no doubt.

As for the mood in the rest of the camp, everyone is aware of the position we're in and how the task is becoming more difficult as the weeks go on.

No one is under any illusions - everyone is well aware that we need to roll up our sleeves up and be counted.

Going into tomorrow's match with Hungerford, we know that we are capable of beating everyone in this league.

THe whole squad knows that we need to start coming away from games like this with points -and at this stage of the season it needs to be three rather than one. THey are a good side at home and we need to make sure the 14 who turn up do what they can.

We just need to look at that one match, focus on going there and getting something from that match.

It is purely about who we have for next 90 minutes, then it's on to the next one.

Personally, I couldn't care less about other teams around us as we fight for survival.

We need to concentrate on ourselves.

THe hardest thing for me is coming to games, sitting on the terraces knowing I could be out there helping the team that is the hardest thing in the world.

We have a young squad and I can see how beneficial it has been for everyone playing at this level.

I played at this level when I was 18 and know how playing in such a tough unforgiving league can be good to bring players on.

But the immediate future for the club is all about staying in the league. THat's what we need to focus on.
