Fines for contaminating bin BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk NEW FIXED penalties could be issued for Chichester residents contaminating their recycling. At the Chichester District Council cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, councillors agreed on a contaminated recycling bin policy as endorsed by the
Waste and Recycling Panel. THe cabinet agreed to grant delegated authority to the Chichester Contract Services Manager to issue fixed penalties of £75 or other notices for waste and waste-receptacle related offences. Contamination occurs when the wrong items are placed in the burgundy recycling bins. When the recycling collected is of poor quality, the whole truck load can potentially be rejected and sent to landfill
which is a more expensive disposal route and adversely affects the environment. It can also impact the amount of recycling support payment received which is based on recycling quality and tonnage. Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for residents' services said: “Unfortunately we have found, in a very small minority of cases, a few residents who contaminate their recycling. "THat means they are not putting the

right materials into their burgundy recycling bin. "As it’s such a tiny minority you might well think that is not particularly crucial. But in fact it would only take one household in a street of residents where everyone is doing their best, to completely contaminate the whole load so that entire load could then go to landfill."
