THe Prime Minister used her appearance in the House of Commons on Wednesday to publicly back the achievements of Major Tim Peake.

Mrs May told MPS: "THis is an important issue. I was very pleased.

One of the first receptions I hosted in No 10 when I became Prime Minister was Tim Peake and to see the enormous enthusiasm he generates among young people for space and science."

She was responding to a question from Chichester’s MP Gillian Keegan who asked her: "Last Sunday we celebrated the achievements of Chichester born

astronaut Tim Peake by honouring him with the Freedom of the City.

"Will the Prime Minister join me in congratulating Tim and give assurances that our significant investment in the European Space Agency, EU space programmes and research will continue as we leave the European Union?"

Mrs Keegan was prompted by Sunday's ceremony in which Major Peake received the Freedom of the city giving

him special privileges.

European Space Agency Astronaut Major Tim Peake praised his home city, Chichester, after receiving the accolade.

At a special ceremony held on Sunday, Major Peake was presented with the scroll by Mayor Cllr Peter Evans.

THe event, at Chichester Festival THeatre, was witnessed by around 1,000 fans who gained free tickets.

Affordable rooms at former shelter

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A FORMER Chichester homeless shelter has advertised for tenants for rooms.

It was announced in April last year that THe Foyer, in Velyn Avenue, Chichester, would close in December, as reported in The Chichester Post.

THe Home Group, the not-for-profit charity which ran the centre, said the reason for the closure was financial and that the changes to housing benefits had had an impact on their finances. At the time, the charity said all 60 young people who lived there would be re-homed.

Now advertised on SpareRooms.com, the rooms are available for just £325 a month, with all bills included.

THe website says: "We are pleased to offer this fantastic opportunity to live in this former care unit . THe location offers very easy access to the town centre and all of the local amenities.

"THe rooms are unfurnished and are all priced at £325 per month. To qualify to be a VPS property guardian, you must have a minimum annual salary of £16,000, be able to provide references (employer and/or character references) for the past two years, be required to undergo a DBS (formerly CRB) check, and a credit check and have proof of UK/EU residency,or proof of indefinite right to remain in the UK. THis is a fantastic guardian opportunity so don't delay!"

THere are several UK firms running guardian schemes, looking after empty houses and commercial premises on

behalf of owners. THe firms recruit individuals who want a flexible lifestyle unsuited to conventional home ownership or renting.

Speaking at a Chichester District Council's meeting in May about the closure of the shelter, Cllr Clare Apel said: “THese young people are some of the most vulnerable and need not just a roof over their head but also all the help from services that THe Foyer gives."

In the same meeting, chief executive Diane Shepherd said: “In terms of THe Foyer and the closing down of THe Foyer, it is run by a charity and the charity has decided to pull out of Chichester which was a surprise not only to my officers but to the county council as well."

In January, Chichester District Council announced the creation of a rough sleeper outreach worker post to help the homeless access accommodation and rebuild their lives.

Chichester Post's property columnist, Clive Janes, from CRJ Lettings, said: "Being a property guardian can be a low-cost way of finding a home. Someone with a salary of £16,000 (the scheme's minimum requirement) could only expect to pass referencing for a property with a rent of no more than £530pcm, which is not enough to rent even the cheapest property currently available to rent in Chichester (a one-bedroom flat at £550pcm).

"While I don't know the exact details of this particular property, the security of tenure is normally lower, though, as by nature it tends to be a short-term solution while a developer decides what to do with a building."

AN OPPORTUNITY has arisen to participate in a charity French bike ride.

After the success of its inaugural Dream Wheelers bike ride last summer, the hospice is planning to repeat the adventure this May. THe fundraiser is open to enthusiastic cyclists of all abilities on a three-night bike tour around the Normandy countryside.

THe event will raise money for the DreamBuilding project to build a state of the art hospice for people in Bosham.

THe cycle ride runs from THursday, May 17, to Sunday, May 20, taking in 100 miles of a beautiful area.

Cyclists are free to set their own pace and enjoy the evenings at leisure.

Registration costs £300 and includes return ferry travel to Caen, two nights' accommodation, a support team to transport luggage, day to day backup and first aid if required, as well as a goodie bag and cycling shirt. It is expected participants will also raise at least £500 in sponsorship.

THe new purpose-built hospice is costing around £15.5 million, with 84 per cent of this already secured.

Museum marks two special anniversaries Orbiting back to former school

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SPECIAL exhibition is opening to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the RAF (April 1,1918) and the opening of Tangmere Aerodrome (March, 1918) .

THis temporary exhibition, to be held at the museum for Easter, between March 30 and April 15, covers the formation of the RAF 100 years ago, why this famous aerodrome was built at Tangmere and its early years of operation.

David Coxon, deputy director at the museum, said: "By the spring of 1918, the

work at Tangmere on constructing the ‘Training Depot’ was almost complete; three ‘aeroplane sheds’ and a Handley Page shed to house four of the large bombers had been constructed and the landing ground was ready for use.

"However, it was not the Americans who were first to use to use the new aerodrome. In March, 1918, three newly formed Royal Flying Corps squadrons (Nos 91, 92 and 93) arrived prior to moving to France and on April 1, these squadrons became part of the newlyformed Royal Air Force.

"THe story of the newly-opened Tangmere aerodrome in 1918 and

the formation of the RAF is told in a temporary exhibition.

"In addition to explanation boards, models and a film showing the RAF aircraft types based at this famous airfield between 1918 and 1970.

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to sit in an accurate replica of an SE 5a First World War cockpit and to ‘fly’ this aircraft on one of our simulators."

SPACEMAN Major Tim Peake wowed students last Friday by visiting his former school.

Chichester astronaut Major Peake went to Chichester High School to talk to students about his time in space.

Almost 28 years since he left the school, Major Peake returned, exchanging gifts and taking selfies with year seven students ahead of the Freedom of the City ceremony two days later.

Tracey Waller, Chichester High School marketing and publicity coordinator, said: "We were delighted to welcome former student, Tim Peake, back to school once again on Friday, February 23.

"Tim visited the school on Friday, July 10, 2009, prior to his astronaut training and formally named a building, THe Tim Peake Sports and Conference Centre.

"Coming back, after his visit to Space and telling us about his adventures was fantastic!

"He spoke directly to our current Year 7s while his presentation was live -streamed to the rest of the school.

"He then visited the Chichester Olympic Gymnastics Club who are now using the THe Tim Peake Sports and Conference Centre and was impressed by the equipment in the building and how it serves the local community.

"He then had a Q&A with the Combined Cadet Force before exchanging gifts with the school.

"As a school, we were fortunate to get 59 tickets and were present at Chichester Festival THeatre to witness him receiving the Freedom of the City.

"Listening to him thank everyone was very special indeed. A fabulous weekend!"

Astronaut praises city for inspiration From page one Teresa May confirmed that government will be discussing with the EU how we can build on our successful cooperation with space as negotiations proceed.

In his speech on Sunday, Major Peake said: “I’d like to say how delighted I am to be back here in my home city and what a huge honour it is to receive the Freedom of the City of Chichester.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the Mayor, Peter Evans, and to the city council for bestowing this honour upon me.

“Of course, Chichester and the local area holds a very special place in my heart. Not only because it was the place I was born and I spent the first 18 years of my life. Also it was the decisions and influences of those formative years that really shaped the rest of my life and ultimately led to a journey in to space.

“THat journey would not have been possible without the help and support of many, many people. So I’d like to take a special moment to say thank you to people who are here today."

Major Peake went on to thank the people from the area who had influenced and supported his career journey from Scouts through to the army and on to becoming an astronaut.

He said: “Firstly to Glynis and Derek Chaffer, otherwise known as Akela and Baloo, from the Westbourne Cub Scouts. Now Derek and Glynis have been

running Westbourne Cub Scouts for what must be now over 40 years, giving hundreds of children like myself their first taste of adventure and outdoors, building confidence and resilience in our younger generations and in the words of the Scouts, giving them skills for life. THank you both so much."

Before the ceremony, Glynis Chaffer, Cub Scout leader for 39 years at First Westbourne, said: “Tim was one of my Scouts. I am so proud of him. Knowing one of our cubs has been in a spaceship is a very proud feeling.

"As a Scout, Tim was really enthusiastic.

It makes up really proud of Westbourne, too, and puts us on the map and gives us a place in history. “ Tim also thanked the high school which he attended until 1990 when he went on to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Major Peake continued: “I’d also like to thank Chichester High School and all the amazing teachers who dedicate so much of their time to helping students to get the best start in life. Not just in terms of their education, but in terms of guiding students through the difficult choice we all have to make during our teenage years.

“I had the opportunity to visit the school on Friday and I was delighted to see it going from strength to strength and in particular the combined cadet force (CCF) was on an absolute high after their recent victory in the South West region’s

air squadron’s trophy competition.

"And of course, it was the CCF that had the greatest impact on me during my time at the school. Satisfying a thirst of adventure but more importantly helping to instil those most important qualities that can’t be taught in the classroom.

"I will be forever grateful to Tony Forrest and Gina Bateman for their tireless dedication to the CCF while I was at the school and for being such great role models for both myself and so many others. THank you both so much.

“And finally, none of this would have been possible at all without the immense support of family and friends.

Despite choosing a career path from an early age that has had more than its fair share of risks, my parents have always provided the encouragement and unwavering support to help me succeed.

THank you to mum and dad and to all the friends and family that are here today.”

Rachel Tackley, executive director of Chichester Festival THeatre, said: "It was a truly special day at the Festival THeatre on Sunday. We’re delighted to have been able to host this historic ceremony on behalf of the city council and to have worked with the European Space Agency to make it happen.

"It was a joy to see so many children and young people in the audience, who will remember Tim’s inspiring presentation on the Principia mission for the rest of their lives. Perhaps one of them will be the next astronaut from Chichester."

What an amazing week! Students enjoyed 6 days of intensive skiing at Kaprun, part of the Zell am See / Kitsteinhorn ski area in the heart of Austria, a beautiful, traditional and very friendly resort.

Students experienced every type of weather condition the mountains could throw at them, from perfect sun to blizzards and temperatures down to -19°C! Everyone made a huge amount of progression in their skiing abilities.

Students reacted well to the fast pace of the week with action packed evening activities including: swimming, ice skating, a ski show, an ice hockey match, shopping in the town of Zell am See and a very memorable Karaoke night!

Well done to staff and students for another enjoyable trip!

Tim inspires fans to reach for the stars

THe foyer at Chichester Festival THeatre was transformed to allow Major Peake to greet the audience and take photographs.

Derrick Harris and wife, Loella, from Chichester, attended with their threeyear-old son, Russell.

Loella said: “I made it on to page 227 of his book Ask an Astronaut and I just had to come along here today, I’m really happy that I was able to meet him.

"I actually tried to become an astronaut but I can’t because of my asthma.

Derrick added: “It was an honour to see Major Tim Peake receive his key to the freedom of Chichester. Russell loved it too and even got to meet his space hero.”

Zoe McManus, from Chichester, went with her daughter, Tiffany Wood, aged 13. She had previously managed to get a prime spot when Her Majesty the Queen came to visit in November.

Zoe said: “I got to speak to Tim, which was incredible. I was so nervous and excited, just like when I spoke to the Queen. Tim Peake is such a great man and a huge inspiration.

“I came here today with not much knowledge on space but coming here is the first time I’ve really taken space and

science in to consideration.”

Tiffany said: “It’s been great today and before I didn’t really want to explore much more about science but now I want to become an astronaut. I gave him a high five and asked him if we could be best friends and he said yes.”

During a question and answer session held after Major Peake's presentation, he answered questions from children including: 'How do I become an astronaut?' and 'Did you bring anything back from space?'

Chichester Mayor, Cllr Peter Evans, said: " Sunday was a great day for the city of Chichester. THe sun shone, as did Chichester.

It’s super having Tim Peake as a national hero, who still appreciates his roots back here in Chichester.

"THe event drew record crowds to Chichester Festival THeatre, with every seat taken. Some children even dressed for the occasion, one in a space jumper, another in a home-made space helmet.

Even the Mayor of Bognor, Cllr Phil Woodall, wore a waistcoat emblazoned with spacecraft.

"THe city council, in acknowledging Tim’s achievements, certainly echoed that of the community, I have heard nothing but support for the

"A day that I, as Mayor, will always remember and I am sure that the young people attending on Sunday will be nothing but inspired by Tim’s talk after the ceremony. BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A NEW 100 mile closed road sportive starting and finishing at the iconic Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit has been confirmed.

THe event was unveiled at the London Bike Show by Rugby World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson CBE and 1982 UCI World Road Race champion Mandy Jones. Entries opened yesterday at 9am and will be sold on a first come, first served basis exclusively to everyone who has pre-registered.

THe inaugural Vélo South is a brand new 100 mile closed road sportive for the UK taking place on Sunday, September 23, with 15,000 riders of all ability levels going on a truly unforgettable journey through the stunning West Sussex countryside.

With around 1,700m of climbing, the Vélo South route is a relatively challenging one, but the beauty of the route, support from locals and camaraderie with fellow riders will make for a truly unforgettable day of closed road riding.

And with thousands of participants expected to travel from across the UK

to experience Vélo South, the event will help raise the profile of Chichester and surrounding towns, villages and countryside as a great place to visit and provide a boost for tourism.

Goodwood Motor Racing circuit is steeped in motor racing history but it also has credentials of the cycling kind, playing host to the 1982 World Road Race Championships; the last time the road world championships were held in Britain. THe women’s championship that year was won by Mandy Jones, who unveiled the event alongside Martin Johnson at the London Bike Show.

Aside from Ride London, Vélo South is the only other opportunity to ride 100 miles on closed roads in the UK in 2018. With over 25,000 pre-registrations received to date, Vélo South is expected to sell out fast.

Martin Johnson said: “As a cycling fanatic, it’s hugely exciting to get another 100-mile closed road sportive coming to the UK. "I can’t wait to be one of 15,000 riders lined up on Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit in September.

"My advice to anyone who is tempted to enter but is doubting their ability to complete 100 miles would be to just take the plunge and go for it."

Paddle for pounds with this year's dragon boat challenge AN ANNUAL boat race held at the Chichester Canal is now open for this year's entries.

CancerWise, the independent, Chichester-based charity is asking participants to 'Paddle for Pounds' to help raise vital funds for services.

Centre manager Lisa Joy said: "In 2011, it was suggested that we should organize a fundraising dragon boat race.

"As we did not have the necessary resources to run such an event, we approached the Rotary Club of Chichester Priory who had considerable expertise in this field.

"THey agreed and the first Chichester Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge was held on the Chichester Canal in June, 2012.

"THis has become a regular and well supported event in the Chichester calendar and, most importantly, provides a much needed source of income for CancerWise – we have received over £22,000 during this

period. " THe charity, located in Basin Road, offers professional and caring support to local people with cancer and their families.

Vital services include counselling, complementary therapies, art therapy, gentle exercise classes, music therapy, specialist support groups and social events.

THe charity's aim is to help people live as well as possible with the impact of cancer, improve quality of life and wellbeing, supporting patients through diagnosis, treatment and beyond, serving patients and their families from throughout West Sussex and south east Hampshire THe dragon boat challenge needs crews with a minimum of 14 to participate. All aboard the Brexit Bus

THe special red bus was filled with antileave campaigners asking: "Brexit: Is it worth it?"

Chichester district councillor Jonathan Brown gave a speech where he said: "I campaigned to stay in Europe in the referendum and I stood as a parliamentary candidate in the election last year. I'm here because I want to talk about what unites us rather than what divides us.

"Whichever way people voted in the referendum and whatever people feel about it now, we all want the best for Britain and that should be our starting point. THere has been too much mocking on all sides and not enough listening. I campaigned to stay in the EU but unlike the official remain campaign, I did a lot of listening to those thinking about voting leave.

"What struck me was how much we agreed with each other. Not on the answers perhaps, but on the big issues facing the country, what they were and still are, and still will be, even if we go ahead with Brexit."

On board the bus was Madeleina Kay, from Sheffield, who wrote and performed a song for the bus tour.

THe remain campaigner is also known as EU Supergirl, after she dressed in a superhero outfit and was escorted out of a Brussels press conference summing up the latest round of Brexit talks in October

last year.

Madeleina made national headlines when she sat in the front row of the auditorium holding a card that read “THeresa Maybe Brexitland” just before the press conference was due to begin.

At Tuesday's event, she said: "THe demographic in Chichester is a lot older than that of the other places we have visited so far.

"However, the people have been far less aggressive and allowed other people to speak and listened to their opinions."

Valuation set for restaurant

MJD Hughes, a company with over 30 years' experience in the business and commercial property market, will value the property in Whyke Lane on March 22.

On Saturday, Residents attended a series of workshops about the future of the community hub.

Attendees contributed their ideas about what they want the pub to be like in three years' time.

Residents considered opening times, the type of food and drink to be served and different activities they would like to get involved with.

Also up for discussion was the name of the group that is working on putting together a community bid for the premises.

Chichester city councillor Sarah Sharp,who ran the workshops, said: "THe comments we received from both the survey and the workshops centre around the community and give me great hope that we can save the pub.

"Already, we have volunteers planning a new book club and craft club and our first quiz took place on Wednesday.

"THe challenge ahead of us is big but knowing that other communities

throughout the country have been successful and the fantastic opportunities we have to work with Plunkett Foundation and the Community Shares Company, give me hope that this challenge is not

insurmountable."

PropertyNews ` Property inspection I’VE BEEN jam-packed with property inspections in the past couple of weeks. THey are an extremely important part of successfully managing a tenancy; helping to ensure your property is in tip-top condition and your tenants are happy in their home.

Initially, I’ll conduct an inspection every three months. Checking the property is obviously important at this stage to gain an idea as to how it is being treated by the tenants.

But, just as important is to see how the property is treating the tenants, too. Have they met the neighbours?

Have the utilities been set-up? Are there any issues with anything?

Testing the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms is also sensible, as is ensuring that the tenants are happy with how the appliances and heating function.

If after the first few quarterly check-ups the tenants are clearly looking after the property and paying their rent on time each month, I’ll normally stretch the visits to every six months. If there are any concerns with a particular property or set of tenants I’ll continue to visit quarterly.

Don’t be slack in visiting your property just because the rent is always paid on time though. Earlier this year, a landlord in Kent was in the news having not visited his property for 12 years because of this reason...to find thousands of empty cans and piles of rotting food in the flat because the tenant couldn’t access the communal bins!

While my tenants know they can call, text or email me anytime, often they won’t bother me with minor maintenance issues until I visit them.

Whether you use a letting agent or self-manage your rental property, be sure someone visits the property and interacts with your tenants to ensure everything is running smoothly. Adrian, who won with 459 votes, will represent the ward on Chichester District Council until May, 2019, when the next district council elections will take place.

THe by-election took place following the resignation of Sandra Westacott. THe percentage turn-out for the election was 42.2 per cent.

` Motorcyclist death A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in a collision with a car on the A285 south of Duncton on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Upwaltham at 3pm on Sunday, February 25, where a red Honda motorcycle had been in collision with a grey Audi Q2.

THe rider of the motorcycle, a 44-year-old man from Pulborough, died at the scene.

THe driver of the Audi, a 77-yearold man from Chichester, was uninjured. His 74-year-old woman passenger was taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, with a suspected serious wrist injury.

THe road was closed until 8pm while investigation and recovery work was carried out.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is to call 101 quoting Operation Helford.

Mount Noddy is the RSPCA branch for the Sussex Chichester and district and is based at Eartham, near Chichester.

THe casino night will be held at the Hilton Avisford Park, Yapton Lane, Walberton, with a dress code of black tie with a hint of red.

Mount Noddy branch manager Clare Palmer said: "THis is a new idea for fundraising for us to help raise our profile to a new audience. We chose the theme as it's fun and different. THe money is essential to the welfare of the animals and it helps us rescue and rehome more and more from the local area.

"THe money raised will be used to help feed the dogs and cats. THe event is great value as you get a great night out for not much more than a meal out, plus you'll be helping raise money to support your local RSPCA branch and animal rescue centre."

Students vow to take stand on inclusion HUNDREDS of students from the University of Chichester have pledged to tackle discrimination in sport.

More than 400 members from 25 different clubs and societies in the university signed a sports charter to show their commitment to promoting inclusivity.

THe pledge is part of the #TakeAStand campaign organised by British Universities and Colleges Sport, to make games accessible to everyone.

Lauren Ellis, the Students' Union president at the university, said: "THe #TakeAStand campaign is all about standing against discrimination in sport whether that's homophobia or racism.

"THe sports charter is for students to show they agree that these discriminations shouldn't be in sport at our university.

"As soon as they signed the charter, they were given a rainbow lace to use in their sports fixtures for the rest of the season, if they wish, to show their support for the #TakeAStand campaign as individuals and as a team.

"Other universities will get involved in the campaign and do different things but we do quite a lot here - our aim is to make sport inclusive to all our

students.

"In a couple of weeks, we will be raising awareness about discrimination against disability in sport and encouraging all of our sport students and sports clubs to be inclusive to disabled students."

THe sports charter promotes fairness, equality, respect and dignity by encouraging people of different sexual orientation and backgrounds to participate in sport.

It is also committed to working with LGBTQ+ groups to rid games of homophobia, and transphobia, while ensuring those taking part challenge unacceptable behaviour.

Daisy Smale, the university's sports federation president, added: "We are proud to have so many students supporting the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.

"THe sports charter forms part of the #TakeAStand campaign and coincided with the launch of our new #TakeAStand accreditation scheme.

"THis scheme enables clubs to earn a bronze, silver or gold accreditation by completing a series of inclusionfocused activities.

"Many are already well on their way to bronze."

A SINGLE mum from West Sussex has spoken about adopting children ahead of national LGBT adoption and fostering week.

About one in five approved adopters in West Sussex has been lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender since January, 2016.

West Sussex adopter Jo said she thought nothing about being gay when considering adopting a child.

"I was more worried about the fact I was single. I have never experienced any negativity from people as a LGBT adopter and I have always been open and honest with people, which I am sure helps," she said.

New scanner donated THOUSANDS of prostate cancer patients in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas will benefit from a new scanner.

THe hi-tech equipment has been donated to Love Your Hospital - the dedicated charity of St Richard's Hospital operator Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

THe bladder scanner has been installed in the urology department at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, thanks to a ÂŁ6,500 cheque from the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation as part of its work helping men with the serious condition.

More than 150 outpatients a week are seen in the department. Its clinicians

will use the scanner as a diagnostic tool to assess the health of a man's lower urinary tract to look for possible signs of prostate or bladder cancer.

Suzie Venn, a consultant urologist at the hospital, said: "THe new scanner allows us to provide a one-stop service for patients coming in to see us.

"We can now provide important tests for patients without the need for multiple visits to the clinic, speeding up their pathway through the hospital.

"THis new scanner is invaluable and the urology team are so very grateful for this support from PCaSO. THe portable 3D ultrasound bladder scanner uses sensitive electrons and ground-breaking technology to provide better accuracy and will reduce the need for unnecessary catheterisation.

Roger Bacon, of the support organisation's Sussex branch, said: "Anything that saves time while giving fast and useful information to the clinicians is worth supporting."

Amanda Tucker, Love Your Hospital's head of charity, said: "We are so grateful for the support PCaSO continues to provide to St Richard's Hospital and to local prostate cancer patients across West Sussex."

In 2016, supporters of the organisation donated ÂŁ25,000 towards new template biopsy equipment, enabling staff to investigate the whole of the prostate more accurately and reduce the need for patients to travel further away for testing.

PCaSO has more than 1,000 members - mainly in Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex. THeir aim is to raise awareness of prostate cancer so more men are diagnosed early when the chances of a cure are high.

Big band revival BIG BAND sounds are about to return to Bognor Regis.

Lovers of music associated with the likes of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and the Rat Pack have been invited to go along to the first session of a rehearsal band.

THis has been arranged by big band leader Mike Bosley with Music and Arts for next Monday at THe Hothampton Arms (THe Hoff ) in London Road.

Mike has played the saxophone for more than 40 years and has operated as a musical instrument maker and repairer in Bognor Regis since 1981.

He has always wanted to recreate somewhere for a rehearsal band in the town.

"I have run a big band on and off for years, pictured above, taking it out on the road gigging both locally and further afield," he said.

"It's a lot of work fronting a band and fitting it in with running my musical instrument business.

"I was really pleased when Steve

Goodheart approached me on behalf of the Rox organisation. THey are committed to promoting live music in and around Bognor Regis and are very keen about getting people involved.

"After taking about all the opportunities, Steve asked me to help by providing my library and helping run the open session.

"THe great thing about rehearsal bands is that you never know who will turn up, even in Bognor Regis."

Mike played in a rehearsal big band from the age of 12 in a hall at the side of the Robin Hood pub in Shripney.

He took along his saxophone to the sessions run by a musician called Dickie Barnes, who was also branch secretary of the Musicians' Union.

THe union used to sponsor such bands as places where musicians could practise their sight reading skills and meet other musicians.

Snap happy club members KEEN photographers have been urged to join a new course at a Bognor Regis centre.

THe Laburnum Centre's Photographic Club leader, Barry Gee, is staging a new course to enable those keen on life through a lens to learn more about the hobby.

THe sessions will begin on April 4 and feature nine key points about photography - including composition, focusing and exposure. THey will take place during the club's usual Wednesday meeting times of 9.30am-3.30pm.

Mr Gee said: "People can come along with a mobile, a tablet or a camera. We will deal with the lot. THe main thing is to help people to take better photographs than they already are.

"It is not necessarily about learning all about photography but just knowing how to do things better."

` Royal street parties ORGANISERS of street parties around Chichester and Bognor Regis to mark this year's royal wedding have been urged to apply well in advance.

Anticipation of the royal occasion between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19 is starting to grow in West Sussex. Some applications to hold the public are starting to be made to district and borough councils.

A county council spokesman said: "None of these six councils is charging application fees for temporary road closures as part of the celebrations to mark the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19.

"However, applications still need to be submitted. which is particularly important so that emergency services are made aware of the closure.

"Details on how to apply can be found on the councils' websites - arun.gov.uk/ apply-to-hold-an-event and chichester.gov. uk/streetparties

of the four regulars at last week's meeting said anyone who joined them would find the time well spent.

THelma Cox, 86, of Aldwick, said: "My photography has improved since I have been coming here for about ten years.

"I like to know what my camera can do and Barry is brilliant. When I want to take a photo, I can take the one that I want."

Pagham resident Mr Gee, 75, has run the club for some 12 years. "I had a stroke and I needed an interest," he said.

"I used to come to the computer club at the centre and the woman who ran it saw some of my photos and I should be doing something better with them."

He has passed on his knowledge and enthusiasm to up to 15 members at a time.

"I'm very pleased with what I have seen," he told Aldwick Parish Council.

THe parish council agreed at its latest meeting to pay £20,000 towards the cost of the work.

Lifesaving equipment is officially launched f Brian Woods

Brian's thinking big for business SMALL business owners in the Post area have a new chairman to represent them.

Brian Woods has been elected to chair the newly-formed south east region of the Federation of Small Businesses.

His area covers West Sussex, Surrey, East Sussex and Kent and includes some 18,000 federation members.

Brian's full-time job as managing director of WS Planning and Architecture, based in Reigate, keeps him busy.

But he said: "I have been a member of the FSB for many years enjoying both the benefits and lobbying side of the organisation.

"I am proud to have been elected to

the position of chairman of this newlyformed region and will juggle with time to make it work for the benefit of both federation members and my own staff."

Assisting in the management of the federation's region is Clive Soper, from East Sussex. He will be appointed as the policy lead.

THe FSB is the UK's largest small bsuiness organisation. It is enjoying a modernisation process called Refreshing our Roots.

Formed in 1974, the federation represents small and medium-sized businesses lobbying and campaigning where necessary at all levels as well as providing a wide range of member benefits aimed at reducing costs.

GENEROUS Bognor Regis resident Trevor Woodland is helping to save lives.

Mr Woodland has donated the cost of a defibrillator to be installed in the town centre by the Lions.

He said: "I was sleeping on a flight to the Far East when all the lights went on and an announcement asking if there was a doctor on board.

"THen I saw there was a passenger lying on the floor in the galley and the crew were using a defibrillator on them.

"It reminded me of the Lions appeal for donations for a defibrillator and I decided that when I returned home I would offer the full amount for the one

required outside Boots."

Each defibrillator costs at least ÂŁ2,650.

THe first of the machines to be donated by the town's Lions club was officially launched ouside the chemist last week by Mr Woodland with members of Bognor Regis Lions Club and Boots' staff.

THe machine was kept behind the shop's pharmacy counter when it was bought last year because the premises were clad in scaffolding for months.

Reg Liddon, Bognor Regis Lions Club president, said: "I hope it's never used!

It's a bizarre thing to say when you've worked hard to get something. If it is ever used, it will be worth every penny."

Its fundraising committee chairman,

Richard Johns, said: "Trevor has set off a chain reaction and we are now in the process of getting our fourth defibrillator in the area.

"To celebrate the Lions' 100 years in existence, they wanted to provide at least one defibrillator for every community.

"THey are lifesavers. THere are people walking about in Bognor Regis who have had their life saved by a defibrillator. It is important to reassure people not to be afraid to use it.

"By doing nothing, you can't help. By doing something, you have a chance to save their life.

"I plan to get as many defibrillators as I can get funding for."

Takeaway boss offers to help those most in need Town centre business owner will mark Mother's Day with a unique event to support homeless people in the area A PERSONAL tragedy is being used by a Bognor Regis takeaway owner to help those in the community with the least.

HoJa is offering free food at the Charcoal Grill to the town’s homeless people in memory of his late mother.

His kind-hearted gesture will take place from midday to 4pm on Mother’s Day at the Station Road business.

“I would like to provide a free meal to those who are homeless around the town. I see people living on the streets and I feel so sad.

Life is very unfair,” he said.

He is also broadening his offer to workers in the emergency services in recognition of the important jobs they carry out.

He devised his generous idea last year as a Christmas present with a difference. But the death of his mother saw him spend the festive

period in Istanbul in his homeland.

“I think that helping others will be a good thing for my mother’s memory,” he said, “helping those who need it the most with some hot food.

“THose who are living on the streets are lacking so much. It’s worthwhile to want to help them by using my business.”

HoJa intends to work with Stonepillow, the charity which works with homeless people in Bognor Regis and Chichester, to ensure his goodwill gesture is received by those who are most in need.

Emergency services workers will be required to show some ID to claim their mouth-watering food.

HoJa will be offering some of his tasty doner kebabs, chickens, and burgers and chips on the day for takeaway only.

Gut feeling is easy way to achieving better health THE BACTERIA found in your gut comprise approximately two pounds of your body weight!

Cecile's taste in wine led to an enjoyable sampling Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com CÉCILE BERGART, of Hampshire Wine School fame, strode into one of two M&S wine-tasting evenings (a recent expansion reflecting demand for places) last week and delivered her talk with customary panache and verve allied to a vestige of sauce.

Being originally of Champagne area provenance, she began the soirée with a fizz starter from Italy, but issued a caveat in terms of Prosecco whose popularity has led to planting further afield (not necessarily with the best terroir) and the new distinction between DOC and DOCG with the latter being the assurance of quality.

THe Acquesi Pinot Grigio Rosé Spumante, on offer at just £8, proved to be a cheeky little number being blush terracotta in colour and oozing strawberry and red cherry.

THe next two wines, namely a Cantina di Monteforte Soave Classico and the Seaglass Sauvignon Blanc from Santa Barbara, respectively priced at £8.50 and

£10, were presented primarily to contrast body and acidity. We were invited to look for both properties and it was evident that the Soave Classico was both less acidic and less intense in flavour than the more acidic Santa Barbara wine and intensely flavoured product of maritime vineyards with Pacific Ocean breeze and copious hours of sunshine.

THe latter I commend to you, given its

abundance of ripe stone fruit and citrus flavours, its pear aromas and crisp , dry and refreshing character.

Tannins were the theme for the two red wines selected for our delectation a D'Aragon Old Vine Cariñena Cariñena from North - East Spain (£8) and a Notte Rossa Primitivo di Manduria from Puglia in the south of Italy.

Cécile then duly demonstrated the way

to sense tannin levels, explaining that tannins strip away saliva in the mouth thus desiccating the buccal area and covering the teeth in fur.

THe lower level of tannin in the Spanish wine meant that it would pair with lean ham or fillet steak, while the higher tannins in the Primitivo wine suit hard cheese or fatty meat, such as lamb.

THis bold, almost brassy, Primitivo was

splendidly flavoursome and oozed dark black fruit and hints of dark chocolate - a wine that captures your taste buds!

THe evening concluded with a glass of a classic style Ruby port, ideal on these Siberian evenings of late pour se réchauffer and packed with rich dark fruits and spice aromas and the ideal accompaniment to either cheese or dark chocolate À bientôt!

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which covers start of a new era for its work.

WITH over 40 per cent of the cedar shingles now fitted and the scaffolding starting to be removed over the coming weeks, we really are entering an exciting phase of the Aldingbourne Trust build.

On the ground-floor, the seven enormous sized panes of glass, weighing a hefty 250 kilograms each, have been installed at its new Quarry Building, pictured below.

THe ground-floor screed is also laid (covering the underfloor heating) and, with the internal walls now complete, the dynamic interior layout can be seen clearly.

THe lift will also be installed over the coming weeks. THis highly specialised job is performed by a single technician.

An essential part of the construction process are the gabion baskets.

THe word gabion comes from the Italian word gabbione, meaning 'big cage'. Gabion baskets come in many shapes and are usually filled with rocks, concrete, sand or soil.

THey were conceived originally to create erosion-free zones, stable temporary foundations and as movable protection for the military.

FAMILIES across Sussex with Type 1 diabetes can gain help from a new group.

THe TD1 Sussex group has been formed by Diabetes UK as a support network for children, young people and their families to come together and discuss matters in local care and treatment.

Philippa Earl, from Hove, chairs the group. Her 13-yearold son, Seb, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2013.

Philippa, pictured above with Earl and her husband, said: "We set up the group because we found there was very little support for parents locally. THe impact of that diagnosis can be very isolating and bewildering.

"THe hospital were great in treating Seb, but as a parent it's been tough coming to terms with diabetes. You feel like there is no one else like you. We wanted to give other families a sense of togetherness as a community where everyone speaks the same language.

"When we meet we share

experiences and exchange valuable tips and information about our children's care.

"We also hold events for families, with fun activities for children, young people and parents, like paintballing and roller disco."

People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin. THe cause of the condition is unknown but it is unrelated to a person's weight and cannot be prevented. It's the most common type of diabetes in children and young adults, starting suddenly and quickly getting worse. It is treated by daily doses of insulin.

Matt Hopkins, Diabetes UK's improving care manager in Sussex, said: "A support network is so important for families coming to terms with Type 1 diabetes.

"THe daily management of the condition can be a struggle - from school lunches to planning trips away."

THey are now used extensively in civil engineering, road building and increasingly as a decorative feature on landscaping projects.

THe gabion baskets at the Aldingbourne Trust build were filled painstakingly by hand and not only look aesthetically pleasing, but also help to integrate and merge the building into the surrounding landscape and environment.

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure the Aldingbourne Country Centre, where the Quarry Building is based, continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development.

I put my hand out to say to him to slow down. So he decided to go faster. I was upset.

LIFE-SAVERS with the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance are among those chosen to benefit from a new charity partnership.

THe medical specialists could gain from a share of £250,000 if the initiative by the leading independent brewer, Hall & Woodhouse, is a success.

THe company hopes to achieve the target with fundraising activities by each of its 51 pubs, such as THe Lion in Nyetimber.

THese will include quiz nights, sponsored events, fun days and sports tournaments.

All the money raised in the two-year charity partner scheme will be split between eight air ambulances to improve their operations or buy new items of specialist equipment.

Julie Clare, head of corporate relations at the air ambulance, said: "We are delighted that the team at Hall & Woodhouse voted to support us.

"THis is a new and exciting partnership that will allow us to reach out to so many people in the local community."

Fundraising for the air ambulance began this week. THis month will see some of the pubs take part in THe World's Biggest Pub Quiz, an event being led by PubAid. Lucinda Gray, the sixth generation of the Woodhouse family to be involved with the brewer, said: "As a company that places the community at the heart of our business, supporting worthy causes is very important to Hall & Woodhouse.

"THese local air ambulance charities cover the counties where our public houses are located and each of them work tirelessly to care for our critically ill or injured patients within our community.

"We are extremely proud to have so many of our public houses backing the partnership and supporting this wonderful cause."

Previous two-year charity partnerships backed by the brewer have resulted in significant sums being raised.

In 2013/14, a total of £248,000 was brought in for Macmillan Cancer Services. THe latest partnership raised more than £210,000 - with the final total still to be calculated - for Together for Short Lives.

"I know our team and guests will do everything they can to exceed these totals over the next two years," said Ms Gray.

Sir, In the 'New Concerns Over Cottage' article that appeared in the Bognor Regis Post on February 20, Peter Johns, a trustee of THe Blake Cottage Trust, is quoted saying that now that the architects' plans for the projected visitor centre have been finalised, "we can go to potential funders to show them that this is a real project and that is what we intend to do".

THere has been the opportunity since September, 2015, to show not only to potential funders, but to the public, that theirs is a real project. In that time, the cottage has fallen into disrepair, and I don’t feel that the plans for the building have been fully explained to the public.

During the 2014 campaign, it was said that a large consortium of accountable organisations and individuals would be created to take care of the cottage and honour the trust put in the Blake Society, who created the public appeal. THis has not happened.

If such a consortium had been created, the necessary funds would have been raised a long time ago. THe fundraising should have continued immediately after the purchase of the cottage, with all members of the consortium contributing their expertise and their skills and, most importantly, making sure that everybody involved was accountable.

Chichester's memorial to the First World War

By Dr Ross Wilson, University of Nottingham WITH THE end of the First World War in November, 1918, the way in which the conflict should be remembered within the city of Chichester became the object of considerable debate.

Across the country, villages, towns and cities were constructing memorials to those who died in the war and the city council had discussed how the sacrifice of local citizens would be marked. THe city’s first war memorial had been dedicated before the fighting had ceased as Priory Park was donated to Cicestrians for their service by the Duke of Richmond in September, 1918.

However, as soldiers returned and families grieved the loss of loved ones, an official place of commemoration was needed as a testament to the city’s citizens and to provide a place to mourn.

THe local churches across Chichester began considering ways in which the deaths of parishioners and their relatives could be marked. THe Church of St George in Whyke had begun collecting funds in 1917 and in December, 1918, less than a month after the Armistice had been declared, a commemorative pillar with a Calvary was unveiled.

THis focused a debate within the city’s press as to what was needed to remember those who had died. THe destructive effects of the conflict were such that many sought memorial schemes which were constructive and beneficial.

One public proposal even argued that the Chichester Cross be removed to enable the free movement of traffic and prevent accidents. Further suggestions in early January, 1919, put forward the idea of a city

library. To bring a greater focus on the topic, on February 11, 1919, a large public meeting was held in the Assembly Rooms. THe debate was presided over by Mayor Garland, who put forward a proposal that the Guildhall in Priory Park could be renovated and turned into a public reading room.

THis meeting established the details of what form the war memorial should take as it was unanimously agreed to ‘perpetuate the memories of those who had fallen in the war’. THere was also a strong expression that the memorial should be in keeping with the architectural heritage of the city.

THe potential types of memorials discussed were: an endowment of St Mary’s Almshouses; public baths or gymnasium; a memorial public hall; enlargement of the Assembly Rooms; a monument in the city or Priory Park; a memorial bandstand; a nursing home attached to the hospital; memorial homes for soldiers or their dependents.

While no formal decision was made, a committee of the Mayor, Aldermen, religious representatives from the cathedral and retired military men in the city was constituted to look over plans and to make a final judgement. By May, 1919, the war memorial committee had still not decided upon a suitable site or form in which the sacrifice of Cicestrians could be commemorated.

With the signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty in July, 1919, the war had come to an end for most people in the city and there was a demand that more should be done for soldiers and their dependants.

Such a suggestion drew strong disapproval within the comment section of the city’s press the proposal was condemned because of the extra costs that would be incurred in maintaining the site.

THe debate regarding the memorial rolled on

and was even a feature of the last sitting of the city council of Mayor Garland in November, 1919. Unfortunately, no resolution could be agreed and the debate continued. In next week’s article, we will discuss the city’s choice of memorial and the methods employed to fundraise for it.

City centre streets packed as more PostSport than 800 compete in pop-up race HUNDREDS of runners of all ages raced around the city centre streets of Chichester for the first leg of the Corporate Challenge.

Organised by Chichester Runners and Athletics Club, the event is designed to get people of all ages racing short distances around a pop-up track under the street lights.

Races took place on a circular track, starting and finishing at the Assembly Rooms in North Street. THe evening began with a group of inter-schools races involving primary and secondary aged pupils.

It was then on to two classified adult races, with more than 400 runners representing running clubs, businesses and various institutions going head-to-head in a bid to come out the champions.

Everyone from students to solicitors, retail staff to transport consultants took part in the friendly event.

With further events next Wednesday and the third leg on March 21, there's plenty of time for those taking part to improve on their overall position in the rankings.

THe class A race, which was a four lap race totaling about 4.5 kilometres, was won by Edward Dodd, of the Russell Giles

Partnership, who came sprinting home in 13 minutes 46 seconds. He was closely followed home by Worthing Hares' Jack Woods (13:53) and Matt Gordon, of Linx Systems, in third (13:57).

THe first female to finish was Rhiannon Dunlop, of the City of Portsmouth club, whose time of 15:28 was good enough for 28th overall. She was well over a minute faster than her nearest competitor, with Chi Uni's Alice Wright (16:23) and Lucy THraves (16:32) in second and third respectively.

THe B race, for less serious runners, was won by Reg Ball of alcohol retail chain Oddbins (16:15).

THe overall team honours went to Portsdown-based Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

THe team of Rob Fryer, Hugh Aggleton, Stuart Vagg and Joe Peake clocked a combined time of 1:1:41 to finish just four seconds ahead of the Russell Giles Partnership. Irwin Mitchell were third.

In the youth races. more than 300 primary and more than 105 secondary pupils took part over various laps of 700 metres.

ATHLETICS: It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Chichester Runners & AC athletes at the Sussex Indoor Championships, held at the David Weir Athletic Centre in Sutton.

Fleur Hollyer (under-15), using starting blocks for the first time, ran a PB of 8.44sec in the 60m, to qualify for the semi-final.

THere she stopped the clock at 8.50sec. She also recorded 10.75sec in the 60m Hurdles semi-finals, just short of her PB. Her focus is now on the National Championships at Sheffield.

In the under-17s, faulty starts unsettled Emily Russell and Phoebe Pontet, who were drawn together in 60m, where they recorded 8.86 and 8.92sec respectively.

Phoebe went on to claim fourth place (10.51sec) in the 60m Hurdles Final.

Under-20 Alyssa White won the Long Jump with a season’s best 5.13m but unfortunately it came at a price.

Her fourth-round jump saw her lose her footing off the board and turn her ankle.

Fortunately, an x-ray revealed no damage, as at first feared, but a badly bruised ligament.

CHICHESTER RFC return to action this week hunting their third win in four away at London Cornish.

THe Blues had a slow start to 2018, losing their first three matches which saw them lose touch with the leaders in London South Division One. But, with a number of key personnel now fit after injury, two victories in the space of three weeks have boosted spirits at Oaklands Park.

Scott Ashley's side currently sit fourth.

And a bonus point victory over Chobham last time out, followed by a week off, means Chi head to Putney tomorrow (2.15pm) confident of putting in a good show against a side who have lost their past four.

With just six matches of the season left, the Blues know that four wins should be enough to see them seal a top four finish.

Anything more than that will require slipups from the top three, who are 13 points clear of Ashley's side.

In Hampshire One, Bognor return from

a fortnight off to welcome Ventnor to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (2.30pm).

THe Purple and Greens sit second in the table and know they must keep on winning if they are maintain the pressure on league leaders United Services Portsmouth.

Bognor beat Fareham Heathens last time out 34-10 to seal maximum points. * Bognor under-16s kept up their fine form by beating Uckfield 57-7 at Hampshire Avenue to record their fourth win from five in the Sussex League.

Stand-in skipper George Orchard started the scoring. Further tries from Cellan Robinson (2) and Lewis Decarteret ensured the side sealed a bonus point before half time.

After the visitors scored a consolation after the break, Bognor responded with two further tries from Robinson, a powerful effort from Tommy Galpin and a fine team effort from Alfie Spurle. Misho Atanasov completed the scoring.

Title race is on for Sids as the league leaders come to town

Table toppers next for City CHICHESTER City will be looking to get their promotion push back on track as they head to league leaders Horsham YMCA in a tabletopping clash.

THe Lillywhites were the victims of one of the SCFL Premier shocks of the season when they were beaten by basement side Littlehampton Town last weekend.

It was one of those days where nothing would go right for Chi. A plucky performance by the visitors and a poor one by City turned the form book on its head as Miles Rutherford's side suffered a 1-0 reverse.

THat defeat condemned Chi to their second home defeat of the season and saw them slip to third, one point behind THree Bridges in second.

With seven sides in the hunt for the top two spots in the SCFL Premier, Rutherford knows his side need to avoid any further slip ups.

THey can make immediate amends tomorrow at Gorings Mead (3pm) when they play a YMCA side who are seven points clear of Chi. After winning their past seven league games, Horsham are the league's form side.

But Chi will take heart knowing that they defeated YM six weeks ago when goals from Samuel Ndlovu and Kaleem Haitham sealed a 2-0 victory in the fourth round of the RUR cup.

Rutherford will be hoping his side show that form rather than the performance that saw them lose to Littlehampton last weekend.

Chi had the best of the opening exchanges. Scott Murfin and Jimmy Wild went close for them before Dave Herbert fired over.

It was the Chi striker's brother Steve Herbert who broke the deadlock, though, slotting home past the onrushing City keeper Ant Ender.

Into the second half and a change of formation looked to have done the trick when Scott Murfin won a penalty.

But Ellis Martin put the spot kick too close to the Golds' keeper and he turned it round the post. A series of other second half chances were also spurned to lead to the loss.

Chi's chance to close the gap on the leaders in midweek was put paid to by the weather when a home match against THree Bridges was postponed on Tuesday.

SIDLESHAM'S title credentials will be put to the test when they welcome league leaders Alfold to the Rec tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side currently sit third in SCFL Division Two and have won their last three in all competitions.

But the Sids, who are six points off top spot with two games in hand, face a real test when table toppers Alfold come to town.

THey go into the match in good form having fired seven past Rottingdean Village in the league last weekend, with Tom Bayley (4), Joe Bennett (2) and Liam-Jay Bush scoring the Sids' goals.

But Pearce will be aware that his side suffered a defeat against the Surrey side in the reverse fixture before Christmas.

With a trip to second-place Roffey coming next week, the Sids know they must continue their fine form if they are to seal a return to senior football at the end of the year.

Fellow SCFL Division Two side Bosham are fifth, level on points with Sids. THey travel to Worthing Town tomorrow (3pm) having inflicted the first defeat since October on Alfold last weekend. Callum Coker and Jake Lafferty scored in the 2-0 win.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea says the club remain in two minds if they will push for promotion this term.

THe Lions are undefeated in ten in all competitions and still in the hunt for three trophies. But, hopes of bringing the SCFL Premier title back to Nyetimber Lane suffered a blow last weekend when Pagham drew 1-1 at lowly Arundel.

THat result leaves the Lions in sixth, 12 points behind league leaders Horsham YMCA but with two games in hand.

tomorrow when they welcome mid-table Broadbridge Heath to Nyetimber Lane (3pm).

With many of the top teams still to play each other, seven sides remain in contention and all have hopes of lifting the county league title at the end of April.

THe prize could be even greater, with a change in the rules meaning the teams that finish in the top two of the division would be automatically promoted to the Isthmian South regardless of their ground grading, Even with this and the side losing just once in 21 matches in all competitions, Shea said

Pagham officials remained unclear if they were committed to taking the club to a higher level.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "We're still no clearer at all as to whether we will go for it.

"We're still in two minds. At the moment I would like to say we would go for it but that's still to be confirmed by committee members and the club as a whole.

"As it is, the top two go up so we will take it if we are there. We are pushing for it."

THe Lions will need to avoid similar stalemates to last weekend.

THey thought they had struck early in a bid for three more points when Dan Simmonds scored after just two minutes.

But Arundel fought back and equalised through Josh Biggs just moments later.

Try as they might, the Lions could not find the winner in a game that was low on quality and on chances.

In SCFL Division One, struggling Selsey return to league action seeking their second win in five matches.

Steve Bailey's side head to fifth-bottom Storrington tomorrow (3pm) looking to reverse their poor run which has seen them slip to eighth.

THe Blues more than held their own last time out against league leaders Little Common in the division one cup. But after taking Common to extra time, two late strikes denied Selsey a place in the semi finals.

League return for Chi Ladies after cup run CHICHESTER City Ladies have an unexpected early return from their FA Cup exploits as a rearranged home match against Gillingham has been scheduled in for this weekend.

More than 1,300 fans squeezed into Oaklands Park a fortnight ago to see Matt Wright's team play Super League side Liverpool in the last 16 of the knockout competition.

A 3-0 defeat followed - but Chi were far from outclassed despite two divisions separating them from their professional opponents.

City had expected two weeks off before their return to FA Women's Premier League South action. But the fixture secretary has managed to secure a visit from the Kent side on Sunday (2pm) at Oaklands Park. THe initial fixture was

postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

With Chi sitting seventh and the Gills tenth in the 12-team division, the odds will be stacked in City's favour, especially as they defeated the Kent side 4-0 away in the reverse fixture in November.

Chi ensured they kept up match practice with a friendly against FA Premier South West Division One side Southampton last weekend.

Wright's side also discovered this week that the FA would be restructuring the women's game from next season.

As well as the top tier becoming fully professional and tier two going semi-pro, Chi's current level will be renamed the FA Women’s National League.

ST ALBANS CITY (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

ROCKS boss Jack Pearce believes his side can build some home momentum as he looks to spark a great escape.

With just 11 games of the season remaining, Bognor sit second bottom of National South, eight points from safety.

But, after securing a first home league win since August against Braintree a fortnight ago and running high-flying Hampton & Richmond close last weekend in a 1-0 defeat, the Rocks are not giving up hope just yet.

A visit from fifth-place St Albans City tomorrow (3pm) may not seem the easiest match on paper.

But a 2-1 win away in Hertfordshire in November still lingers fondly in the memory of the Bognor squad - and the Nye Camp faithful will be hoping the Rocks can pick up where they left off against the Saints by registering a double over the promotion chasers.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "I hope we can build on the last home game and I hope we can play as well as we did last time [against Hampton].

"We worked very hard and gave a good account of ourselves. If we get chances I hope we can take them."

spurned a headed chance just before the break. Into the second half and Hampton took charge. THe Rocks held out until the 85th minute when Shaun Jeffers turned a low strike into the net.

Pearce said: "What Saturday showed is how competitive the league is this year and how the difference between success and failure is very small.

"THey are second from top, we are second from bottom and, after an hour, there was not much between us.

"We had two chances when we had them at our mercy and, when they had their moments, they took them. THat's football."

THe good news for the Rocks is that skipper Sami El-Abd is available after his red card for an alleged elbow at the end of the match was over-turned. THis means he is in contention for tomorrow's match.

Towering teen striker Stefan Ljubicic, who is on-loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and was dismissed an hour into his home debut against Truro City, is also available.

But Calvin Davies remains out through suspension while James Crane, Dan Beck and Chad Field are unavailable because of injury.

THat is, of course, as long as the Beast from the East relents and allows the Nyewood Lane turf to thaw out.

Pearce said: "We'll be making an early decision."

'Red cards not players' fault' THE DISMISSAL of Rocks' skipper Sami ElAbd last weekend continued an unwelcome trend for Bognor.

In three of the last four matches, a player has been dismissed for Jack Pearce's side. With Richard Gilot and Ben Swallow also seeing red since the new year, discipline appears to be a problem. But anyone around the Rocks' squad will laugh at such claims.

Pearce said the number of red cards were the most of any team in his 48 years of football - adding the reason ran a lot deeper than individual rash mistakes.

He said: "We haven't got a nasty bunch of players but the game is going that way. THere are more cautions and more sendings off.

"What we have to realise that at our level the FA, quite rightly, is trying to find younger referees to promote to the higher grades.

"You have to expect that they don't have the experience and that some players will play up to it. If you've got players trying to get opponents sent off, and surrounding the referee after incidents, you will get mistakes.

"I don't get upset, I get frustrated - it has major impact on the game. If you're on the wrong end as a player, manager and supporter it's dreadful. You have to take it on the chin."

f Sami El-Abd's suspension has been over-turned

WELL, it was a long time in the waiting. But finally we had a win!

It's fair to say that after our 2-1 win over Braintree Town at Nyewood Lane the other week the overwhelming feeling in the Nye Camp was surprise.

After such a poor run at home, finally we got out of that rut and performed well to deservedly win at home.

Can you honestly believe it that we had to go back to August to last savour a home victory in the league?

Given that poor run, I think it was important that we scored first - let's be honest, that really hasn’t happened much this season.

French midfielder Richard Gilot, the man who got us that very important early goal, performed well and Tommy Block was fully deserving of his man of the match award.

It was nice to get our own back after the 3-0 defeat at their place in Essex.

Braintree Town appear to be struggling at the moment but the difference is they have picked up a lot more points in the early part of the season.

I have to say that Ollie Pearce’s goal was also well taken. Although maybe not yet 100 per cent fit, Ollie really does make a difference to our team.

Next up was the trip to Hampton & Richmond Borough last weekend.

THe Beveree was very cold as we gathered in the sunlight prior to kick off.

I thought we did very well in the first half and should have scored through Pearce when his attempt after going around the goalkeeper was hacked off the line.

THe second half was a different story, though. It got more and more difficult as Hampton continued to attack us and this meant we were playing deeper in our half.

Leading up to the goal,

it did look like Kristian Campbell was on the wrong end of a bad tackle but it was ignored by the referee.

THese are quite important and instrumental decisions going against us.

I try not to put our defeats down to the refereeing decisions usually, but on this occasion the result should have been goalless.

So we only have 11 games left of the season.

Considering we haven’t won many throughout the year, it looks doubtful we are to avoid the drop.

But, if we get a result tomorrow against St Albans City, it might start a bit of a run at home at least.

We, of course, played really well at St Albans earlier on this season.

If we replicate that display, we can easily repeat that result at the Lane.

With clubs around us getting results, now is the time for us to start putting results together if we are going to avoid relegation.

But I know the players really appreciate the support they are getting regardless – there were over 30 on the coach to Hampton, with more travelling up by other means.

Considering our league position I think that’s marvellous.
