No new harbour for Selsey

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk OPTIONS to improve Selsey’s fishing industry are being investigated after Chichester District Council voted against further investment.

THe aim of the Selsey Haven project is to examine the feasibility of building a small harbour near East Beach to

provide fisheries protection.

Consultants produced reports containing recommendations and after evaluating these, the district council decided that no further resources would be committed to progressing the Selsey Haven proposals after the level of capital investment required was estimated at between £14m and £19m.

At the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, leader, Cllr Tony Dignum, said: “I think

this is an important subject and we are asked really to note the findings of the consultants' reports.

"THere may be future alternative measures possible to support the local fishing industry in addition to those already described in the Selsey Vision.”

Cllr Jane Kilby said: "I think it is important that we pursue options which mean we can help each other out.

"I support the industries so I

recommend the changes to the report and I think it is a positive way forward."

THe news has divided councillors from Selsey Town Council, with some claiming the reports were a waste of money.

At Selsey Town Council's meeting on Wednesday evening, Cllr Andy Brown said: “I am unhappy and a bit dubious."

Homes from Park move to the city

Chichester District Council's latest meeting of all councillors agreed that it would see if it could accommodate some 44 homes a year in the part of the South Downs National Park (SDNP) in its area.

THe South Downs National Park Authority, which is shortly due to submit its plan for examination, has approached Chichester District Council to ask whether it can take some or all of its unmet housing needs within Chichester district.

Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning services, said: "In order for Chichester District Council's local plan review to be deemed sound by the examiner, the council will have to demonstrate that it has fulfilled its obligations under the duty to co-operate and agree its statement of common ground with its neighbouring authorities.

"Unlike our plan, which has to be development-led, the SDNP draft plan is landscape-led. THe effect of which is that it does not meet its full housing need within the park area and under the duty to co-operate can request adjacent authorities to provide for its unmet need."

THe cabinet previously considered the report on the South Downs PreSubmission Local Plan in November and it was anticipated that the unmet housing

needs arising from the part of the national park within Chichester district were estimated to be 56 dwellings per annum. However, this is now estimated to be 81 dwellings per annum.

Although the supply of housing is greater that anticipated, it leaves a shortfall of approximately 44 dwellings per annum.

Cllr Eileen Lintill said: "As a member of one of the areas of the national park I absolutely concur with everything that Cllr Taylor has said."

Leader of the council, Cllr Tony Dignum, said: "I think the two main points are that, we were never consulted on the extra 44 houses at the time. We are only now being asked to take them and the consultation has finished.

"Secondly, we are talking about only 44 dwellings per annum, which is something less than one per parish.

"I would just remind members that currently under the consultation of the government's housing figures, that 75 per cent of our population supply 609 houses per year, the national park, which is 25 per cent of the district's population, only take 81, which is a considerable diversity.

"I do not accept that all of the national park is a higher standard. It's a great slab of area from Winchester to Eastbourne and surely some of it is suitable for housing. THe important thing is to keep these villages alive, that’s part of being a national park. It means not allowing pubs, shops and schools to close. And to plan for no housing at all seems to me to be quite wrong."

A CHICHESTER-BASED choclatier has celebrated female staff with a gender pay survey for International Women's Day. As an acknowledgement of International Women's Day yesterday (THursday), Montezuma's carried out a survey of its workforce to determine its performance in relation to gender and pay.

THe company, which has long championed the concept of trading fairly both internally and externally, has revealed that its gender pay gap is -2.4 per cent in favour to women, compared to the national average of 18.4 per cent in favour of men.

Montezuma's workforce is

predominately female, with 70 per cent of its positions held by women.

Helen Pattinson, Montezuma's cofounder, said: "We always work hard to support and encourage all of our staff, and ensure that we give our people a position based on their relevant experience and skill set, regardless of gender.

On International Women's Day, I am really proud that we can celebrate our very strong female workforce.

"We have always been keen to support flexible working for staff, and although we fall below the legal requirement to publish our gender pay gap, we felt it was important to share our results."

Simon cooks up the perfect book recipe Council is divided on report findings f Simon with his book at Waterstones

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk STORYTIME was held at Waterstones in Chichester for author Simon Philip on Saturday.

I Really Want The Cake is a children's book written by Simon and illustrated by Lucia Gagiotti.

Crowds of children attended the event at the bookshop in West Street to hear Simon bring his book to life.

Simon was born in Chichester and after graduating from Exeter University, he became a teacher, which rekindled his love of children's literature, particularly picture books, so much so that he had a go at writing his own.

Deciding he was better at writing stories for children he left the world of education to live the life of a writer.

Lucia is a London and Italy-based

illustrator and graphic designer. She graduated from New Accademy of Art in Milan with a BA in graphic design and a specialisation of illustration. She moved to London in 2005 and has been working freelance since then.

THe book details the story of a little girl who tries to resist the temptation of eating a delicious cake after her mum has left a note saying that she must not eat it.

Planetarium sees rise in space fans - see page five

From page one "I am really unhappy that we had to spend so much money for a feasibility study that pretty much says that a haven or harbour was not going to be viable.

"I am unhappy that they knew this back in 2015 when the first lot of reports were done.

"THey have mentioned demolishing East Beach Green. It says the district council may be under an obligation to replace it but how are you going to replace 25 per cent of Selsey's green space?

"I can't help but think that the report says we need to attract corporate investment to make this happen and we need to sell Selsey.

"What is to say that we do a vision, we do all of the recommendations and suddenly it becomes an attractive proposition for the district council to sell East Beach Green and build a harbour because suddenly all the leg work has been done."

Cllr Ian Martin said: "THis is yet another report that has been done at a cost of £50,000 that has gone to waste."

In the meeting, the clerk confirmed that the original cost of the studies was reported to have been around £49,000.

Selsey Fisherman Association pledged £1,000 and the district council asked Selsey Town Council to match funds of £24,000.

Cllr Carol Purnell said: "Had this been viable and money could have

been made out of it, then we could potentially have got the funding.

"No local authority is going to put money into a black hole. But if there was a real viable return on it then you would have got more funding from the local authorities so it all hinges on the viability.

"To find out the viability, we decided, and we as a majority in this council, decided to go for this because it would have been a great idea but we all knew that there was a risk.

"We have got our money's worth with the recommendations that have come out, if we follow them through."

Recommendations from the reports include: creating better pedestrian wayfinding between town centre and east and West beaches, developing trails and improving signage, employing seafood sales and marketing champion, develop and hosting crab and lobster event, improve the public realm at East Beach and temporary commercial units.

Chichester District Council agreed that should the Selsey Haven Steering Group and Selsey Town Council wish to pursue an alternative project to asses options to support the fishing industry and related marine activity, then Cabinet would be willing to consider committing resources to preliminary work, including investigating funding sources, subject to costs being matched by Selsey Town Council.

` Girl missing POLICE are concerned for teenager Maisie Farley, who is missing from Chichester.

THe 14-year-old was last seen at home at about 8am on Monday.

She was last seen wearing a short black puffa style jacket, blue jeans and grey ankle boots.

Maisie is described as white, about 5ft 5in, of slim build, with long light brown hair.

On Facebook, Maisie's mother, Alison Carpenter, said: "Most worryingly, she has not been seen on any of her usual social media and this is very out of character.

"Although streetwise, Maisie is very naive and trusting and we are growing increasingly worried for her safety and are beside ourselves with worry.

Developers to fund Solent protection

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A STRATEGY has been agreed for use in determining relevant planning areas for the Solent.

At a council meeting held on Tuesday, councillors agreed that the areas of the Solent within the Chichester district adopt the new strategy with a three-year review.

THis will include a team of five to seven coastal rangers to advise people on how to avoid bird disturbance, liaise with landowners and host school visits.

THere would also be site-specific projects to better manage visitors and provide secure habitats for the birds.

THe funding of this would be secured by developer contributions calculated by number of bedrooms for the property.

Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning services, said: "THe Solent is recognised internationally for its wildlife. THere are three designated protected areas in the Solent, two of which are in Chichester district.

"THere are 60,000 new homes are planned for the Solent area by 2034. It is inevitable such a large increase will have an impact on the wildlife."

It is argued that new housing development across the Solent would have a detrimental effect on the special protection areas. In order to allow this development to continue, the Solent Recreation Mitigation Partnership has been set up to deliver a strategic

mitigation scheme.

As part of the strategy, there will also be initiatives to encourage responsible dog walking, site-specific projects to better manage visitors and provide secure habitats for the birds and new and enhanced green spaces as an alternative to visiting the coast.

Funding would be made up from 337 for a one bedroom dwelling through to £880 for five bedrooms or more based on a sliding scale of contributions.

THese contributions will apply to new homes built within 5.6 kilometres of the special protection areas.

Cllr Tricia Tull said at the full council meeting: "Does more bedrooms mean more dogs? A household often has one dog or two, whether it has five bedrooms or one bedroom.

"THis wonderful percentage of the world's population of Brent Geese, you tell that a local farmer when they stripping the fields of what they have planted. Any of these measures will just increase the cost of housing and that is sticking an extra £500 or £600 on to every house that is built."

Cllr Clare Apel said: "As somebody who has a working Cocker Spaniel. THe damage they can on the shores, I've seen I won't allow mine to go anywhere near the shore, until certainly the summer season.

"I think we are being very naive in this and I think to only review it after three years is totally inadequate. I think we should be looking at this at least annually."

Night of yoga sees hundreds help raise funds for hospice A NIGHT of yoga has raised hundreds of pounds for St Wilfrid's Hospice and Sarcoma UK. Sidlesham-based yoga teacher Niki Perry held a night of yoga at Southend Barns in aid of the hospice's DreamBuilding campaign and Mel DeLacy's Let Me Be Me campaign for Sarcoma UK. Nearly 100 yogis turned out in the snow to raise over £2,000.

Mel, who runs the Let Me Be Me campaign, decided that she needed to raise public awareness of Uterine Sarcoma, due to her own terminal diagnosis.

She said: “Between 70 and 80 per cent of women over 50 years of age have fibroids. THey are common and

cause heavy bleeding and pain.

"Like me, most women will have absolutely no idea that their fibroid could be cancerous. I also worked with women’s cancers daily and had no idea that I had it.”

Mel, who has terminal sarcoma, moved everyone with her brave and generous words of strength and positivity on the night.

Tim Peake and Planetarium partnership made in heaven

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A RISE in interest of space has increased in the city thanks to Major Tim Peake.

South Downs Planetarium in Kingsham Road has been holding public presentations called One Small Step for Major Tim, A Giant Leap Towards Mars.

Visitors are able to find out all about Tim’s epic adventure on board the International Space Station, and what lies beyond for the future of space travel.

THe show features stunning fulldome, immersive video sequences that surround the audience with breathtaking moving colour images.

Dr John Mason who presents Tim Peake at the Freedom of the City ceremony last Sunday is passionate about all things space.

He said: "THe Tim Peake show we do is very popular. It isn't just about Tim and his mission, it's a much broader show.

It's now a lot more about how what he did leads in to the next phase of exploration.

"We introduced the full-dome video system exactly a year since Tim was launched, December, 2016. We have phased it in more, as time has gone on.

What's interesting is the non full-dome shows, particularly the guided tours of the night sky, have become unbelievably popular. We have even had to add extra shows where they have sold out. THese

are shows we have been doing since we opened.

"THere has been a continued interest in Tim and what he did and how he has inspired a huge number of young people but I think also an increasing interest generally in space and astronomy as a whole."

In his speech at the ceremony for the Freedom of the City, John said: "Tim's mission to the ISS has inspired a whole new generation to think not only about space exploration and space science, but about science, engineering and technology in general and their importance in our society today.

"I also think that the numerous wonderful images that Tim shared during his flight have made many people look at our own Planet Earth and appreciate its great beauty and fragility in a quite different way.

"But equally important, Tim's mission has shown young people today that it is OK to have a dream ... and that if you are prepared to be committed and focussed and dedicated in your pursuit of that dream, and if you are prepared to work hard, then there is nothing you cannot achieve."

Dr Mason, along with three other founders, began the Planetarium project in 1992 when they decided Chichester had nothing for science. It took the team about seven years to raise enough money to start converting the barn into

a planetarium.

John said: "We started building here in 1999 and opened in July, 2001, so this is our 17th year. I think back to 1992 when we had this pipedream and what we do now, and it's just astonishing."

With huge changes already transforming the site, John confirmed the planetarium will keep expanding.

He said: "We have grown over the years.

We are now raising funds to put in a solar panel system. We are going to get some big battery storage so that in the summer, we hope to be running almost entirely on solar energy.

"THe next really big job is the complete re-design of the foyer area. We are looking at a new entrance foyer, much more space-age with new lighting and interactive displays.

"We are a volunteer-run organisation and very much an educational facility.

Our idea is that the Planetarium is not to replace the real sky. It is to try and show people what there is out there so they will then go out on their own and try and find the things we have talked about."

` New headteacher BISHOP Luffa have announced a new headteacher will be starting at the school in September.

THe board of directors confirmed they have appointed Mr Austen Hindman as the next headteacher of the school.

Mr Hindman will take up his post on September 1, 2018. He will be only the fourth head in the 55year history of the school and his appointment follows the retirement of Nick Taunt after 18 years of service.

Nigel Hoggarth, chairman, said: “Members of the board of directors were unanimous in their decision to appoint Mr Hindman.

"He was selected because he was the outstanding candidate at the end of a demanding twoday selection process that was supported by the Diocese of Chichester.”

Austen Hindman is currently headteacher of Peacehaven Community School and has had a successful career in the senior leadership of schools in Portsmouth and Brighton and Hove.

Looking forward to his new appointment, Mr Hindman said: “Bishop Luffa is a unique school with a well-deserved reputation for academic excellence. It is a privilege to be appointed as the fourth headteacher in the school’s history, and I look forward to building on the strong foundations that Nick Taunt has created.”

City's Fairtrade pledge renewed

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE FAIRTRADE pledge will be renewed for the city of Chichester.

Cllr Margaret Evans reported that she and the Mayor had recently met with a representative of Fairtrade Chichester and Chichester City Council publicly reaffirming its Fairtrade pledge had been discussed.

THe news was discussed at last month's city council meeting.

Cllr Margaret Evans was voted to be the city council representative on behalf of Fairtrade.

She said: "THere are a number of outlets in Chichester who have affirmed and reaffirmed their pledge to qualify us as a Fairtrade town. We as a city council need to do the same.

"Fairtrade guarantees produces a fair and stable price for their products. It covers their costs and enables them to support their families and invest in a better future.

"West Sussex County Council has signed up for Fairtrade. THis means they are trying to use Fairtrade products in everything they use and we need to do the same. THe tea and coffee used at the

city council is Fairtrade, as is that used in the Mayor's Parlour.

"We have a copy of our town's Fairtrade certificate from 2012. THe city still meets the criteria but it would be much better if the city council publicly reaffirm the Fairtrade pledge.

"As the Fairtrade representative, I will ensure that I consider Fairtrade at all the dealings of this council."

Cllr Richard Plowman said: "THe city as Fairtrade was introduced when I was Mayor so that was back in 2006. It was a very good initiative which worked very well .

"It was quite unusual and we were one of the first cities to become a Fairtrade city. I am very supportive of keeping this going.

"I'm not sure if people realise it's not just Fairtrade coffee and food. I was quite amazed to see that one of our jewellers is a Fairtrade jeweller.

"THe gold on top of the cathedral spire is in fact Fairtrade gold. It is these sorts of aspects which are quite important to people.

"It's a lot wider than we think and it's something we should keep going."

It was also suggested at the meeting that the Fairtrade logo could be included on the new city council signs.

Mobile app to report issues COUNCILLORS are urging residents to download an app created by West Sussex County Council.

THe 'Love West Sussex' app allows users to report community concerns regarding the environment and roads.

THis can include potholes, damaged, dirty or missing signs,cracked, broken or uneven paving slabs or weather-related conditions such as fallen trees and flooding.

THe app allows users to see a problem and take a photograph of it on their mobile device.

THey can then check the location which is detected automatically using the GPS on the user's phone.

THe last category involves residents choosing a report category from a list and submitting the issue.

THe report is then sent to the relevant

authority and users are kept informed of any progress in a variety of ways including text, email or via the Love Clean Streets website.

Speaking at a Chichester City Council meeting, county councillor Jeremy Hunt said: "I would encourage everyone to download the Love West Sussex app because it's a marvellous tool.

"When you see a big puddle or a pothole you go on to the West Sussex app, take a photograph, it does a GPS location and you put in what it is, such as road surface, road sign, verges etc. You are updated directly.

"I will encourage everybody to use that because it really does work. THe more people that put those through, the better it is."

On Tuesday, around 40 secondary school children enjoyed a unique farm-to-table tour of Goodwood as part of a nationwide bid to teach young people about provenance.

THe children, from Bohunt School in Worthing, followed the journey from the fields where animals graze to the kitchens at the estate’s sustainable restaurant, Farmer, Butcher, Chef.

THere, they met the Goodwood chefs who create unusual dishes using the organic beef, pork and lamb reared on the farm.

It is hoped the day, which is part of THe Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ National Adopt a School Week programme, will be the first of many at Goodwood.

Compulsory purchase order proceeds on Tangmere homes

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THOUSANDS of pounds have been allocated to continue work on the compulsory purchase order in Tangmere.

At Chichester District Council's meeting on Tuesday, it was agreed to allocate £150,000 from the remaining planning delivery grant reserve and general reserve to fund the work.

THe Tangmere site was deemed fundamental to the delivery of the housing requirement as identified in the Local Plan and for the council to be able to continue to demonstrate a five-year housing land supply.

Cllr Susan Taylor, cabinet member for planning services, said: "THe Tangmere site has been identified as a strategic development location in the Local Plan for the provision of 1,000 homes and associated infrastructure.

"THe site has the support of the parish council and has been identified in the Tangmere neighbourhood plan.

"Despite meetings between Chichester District Council officers and landowner promoters of the site, little progress has been made to date.

"As there has been little progress to date, it is felt that the council has no alternative but to continue with the CPO progress.

"A CPO is very specialised work and in order to engage the experts required, an

additional £150,000 is requested.

"THere is a possibility we might be able to recoup this money as part of the CPO through its developer partner."

As reported in The Chichester Post at the end of January, residents in Tangmere received a letter stating Chichester District Council was considering making a compulsory purchase order.

THe correspondence stated that the compulsory purchase order would

acquire land and interests in an area of land situated at Tangmere.

THe land is located to the north and west of Tangmere Road and south of the A27 Arundel Road.

Knight Frank are the council’s CPO advisers and Mr Nigel Riley from Citicentric, a property development management consultancy, attended the meeting to answer queries from members.

He said: "Knight Frank have been talking to existing landowners and they have established there is a demand in the market for this sort of project and they will secure a master planner."

Cllr Richard Plowman was concerned about the project. He said: "I think everybody recognises that if you are going to go ahead with this, one thing of concern is if the £150,000 is the end of it or would there be further fees."

THE SNOW has thawed out and as March is typically the time the property market awakens from its winter slumber, I thought we’d take a look at what’s for sale in Chichester.

Of course, what you can buy is largely dependent on your budget.

THe cheapest property in Chichester costs just £17,000 - a threebedroom mobile home on Lakeside Holiday Park. THe problem is it’s not a permanent residence. THe cheapest fixed abode in Chichester, excluding retirement and shared ownership properties, will set you back a whopping £170,000. It’s a two-bedroom apartment in Charles Avenue, which has been on the market since last April.

At the other end of the scale, the most expensive property for sale in Chichester today is a six-bedroom detached house in Salthill Road priced at £1.55m. Let’s assume your budget is somewhere in the middle of those two extremes.

In fact, the median property for sale in Chichester costs £335,000.

At that price you could choose to buy a two-bedroom flat in Summersdale, or a three-bedroom semi-detached house in Parklands or Westhampnett.

What’s also interesting to note is how much (or how little!) choice there is for prospective property buyers in Chichester right now.

THere are 509 properties for sale, of which just 305 are still available to buy and 204 are now sold ‘stc’ (subject to contract/completion).

THose looking for a three-bedroom house have the most choice, with 87 available to buy in Chichester.

It is the smaller homes, aimed at our first-time buyers, where supply is particularly lacking. THere are actually more four-bedroom houses available (49) than there are onebedroom flats (13 available), twobedroom flats (32 available) or twobedroom houses (37 available).

It seems that the low supply of property in Chichester is limiting prospective buyers’ choices.

Wartime love story turned into book for Selsey couple

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A 70-YEAR marriage has turned into a new book for a couple in Chichester.

Madge and Basil Lambert, from Selsey, are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year with a book detailing their wartime love.

In 1944, a 21-year-old Madge Graves was called up to serve in the Burma campaign in the Second World War. THere, she would meet a soldier who would become the love of her life, Basil.

THe couple’s youngest daughter, Angela went on holiday to Turkey and met a journalist, Robert Blair, who took great interest in her parents' story.

Once home, Robert met with Madge and Basil and the idea of the book was generated.

Madge said: “We were reluctant at first. As far as we were concerned there is nothing in it. It's just our life."

Basil agreed, saying: "I can't say it was the furthest thing from my mind because it was never in it!"

Basil commented on how Robert had researched their story after they recalled accounts and was stunned . THis included Madge's story of a Japanese prisoner who had been shot in the back who Madge nursed. Robert then found documents showing this.

Now, at 94 , Madge shares her story of a wartime love which has lasted a lifetime.

THe book is charming, bold and heartwarming and a beautiful keepsake for daughters; Carolyn and Angela.

Madge is one on the last few remaining women to have served as a nurse during the Burma Campaign.

She said: "I was the youngest one to

go out. THey turned me down at first because I wasn't 21. THey took me on and I had my 21st birthday on the ship going out."

Recalling the first time Madge met Captain Basil Lambert in Chittagong, she said: "I was friendly with a very nice man named Mac. "THere wasn't any shops really in Chittagong and so I knocked on Mac's door to get some stamps. He answered and when I went in, there was a man sat down with his feet up, reading some papers.

"Mac introduced him as Basil and he said a brief hello before returning to his papers.

"When I left, I said to Mac, 'Who does he think he is?'

"A week later, Basil sent me a

note apologising and asking me to join him for dinner."

Basil: "I had been out there for over a year before I met Madge. You didn’t see women there. THe only women you saw were the Indian ones looking after you.

"You had to live your life on a very dayto-day basis, neither of us could look beyond the time of day that we were.

"You had no idea what was going to happen and being jungle warfare, we wouldn't know until it was too late if a Japanese unit had approached, you just don't know what is going on."

Daughter Carolyn Blendell, who lives next door to her parents, said: “I'm reading the book at the moment and it's fascinating.

"It will pass down through the family, it's a lovely keepsake."

THe couple have also appeared on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing

Remembrance Day special in 1999.

Basil said: "It was the most wonderful day. THey treated us really well."

Madge and Basil have enjoyed many special occasions together through the years.

Basil said: "About ten years ago, they did a Heroes Return which was where you could go back to where you were during the war, so for us it was the Far East. THat was a really special trip for us."

THe couple also attended the 70th anniversary of the Burma Campaign on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, London, and they also both met Dame Vera Lynn on the 60th anniversary of VE and VJ Day and Prince Harry at a Buckingham Palace garden party.

` Rogate by-election CHICHESTER District Council has announced the date for the by-election for the Rogate district ward.

It will take place on THursday, April 12, following Chichester MP, Gillian Keegan’s resignation from the district council.

People will be able to vote between 7am and 10pm.

THe nomination period began on Wednesday and ends at 4pm next Wednesday, March 14.

` Quiz raises cash A QUIZ night held by Chichester Rotary Club raised funds for Chichester Boys' Club.

THe Rotary Club has been closely associated with the management of the boys’ club since its formation in 1922.

Since that time there have been many changes in society and as a result the club has also had to change.

It has become not only a youth club for boys and girls but also a focal group for local community groups where it now has over 12 groups using the facilities at the boys’ club.

Fighting to recycle plastics

Since Sir David Attenborough delivered a powerful call to everyone to do more to protect the environment in the final episode of the popular BBC series, campaigners across the country have been hard at work.

As Waste Week (March 5-9) came to a close, everyone in West Sussex has been encouraged to reduce the amount of ‘single-use’ plastics they use.

THe county council has been challenging everyone to #PassOnPlastic and find an alternative for at least one plastic item they would usually use just once and then throw away.

County council cabinet member for the environment, Deborah Urquhart, said: “In West Sussex we’re fortunate enough to be able to recycle lots of different types of plastics – such as bottles, pots, tubs, and trays - at home through our kerbside recycling bins.

“We want to encourage people to look for alternatives where possible so we can reduce the amount of non-recyclable plastics which end up in landfill or our oceans and rivers.”

Resident Kay Mawer runs Clothkits, a kit clothing shop in the Hornet, and is in the throes of opening a vegan cafe within the building.

Kay said: "It was my 40-something birthday in February, and in advance of it I had thought that I really wanted to spend the day doing something, well

worthwhile.

"I got in contact with my local Waitrose a couple of weeks prior to ask them if I could spend my birthday with them giving out free compostable cups to those customers who would like them as a ‘gift of green’.

"Waitrose declined my offer a few days later stating that they did not believe that compostable cups were a sustainable solution.

"So on my birthday I dressed as a whale and with two friends went on a little campaign trail around the city of Chichester, ending up in Waitrose.

"We created a petition for people to join - we had so much support and people were very enthusiastic about it while we were out and about.

"I chose Waitrose initially because I like them, and shop there and I would like to support them more enthusiastically so I have been really trying to go for this in a non aggressive manner trying to chivvy them along the

right track.

"I also know that their founder was a naturalist. I also believe that if we can get them to change, then they could be a great leader in this issue."

Chichester District Council has confirmed that coffee cups can be recycled.

A spokesman said: "Paper cups and paper takeaway coffee cups can be placed in your recycling bin. Please make sure no liquid remains in these cups. THe plastic lids can also be recycled. No straws please."

Kay continued: "On investigating our local facilities subsequently I discovered that our district can recycle coffee cups, which is such a great thing.

"I spoke with the local contractor, Viridor, and was advised that the cups

need to be rinsed, and patted dry with kitchen paper, and then popped into a container.

"We are going to put that into practice in our ‘own backyard’ so to speak.

"I have also been approached by THe Final Straw (Solent) and have agreed to join their project for the Chichester area. THey initially have been busy in Emsworth and now want to expand their area to cover the Solent.

"THey are building momentum to make their area plastic straw free and have got amazing support.

"While the initiative starts with a straw it extends to plastic bags and other single-use plastic items."

` Area's growth plan published A BUSINESS group has issued its long-term plans for the growth of the economy of south-east England.

Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership wants to hear the views of the public about its proposals.

Its members want the area to be among the UK's most productive and successful regions by 2030 and to provide opportunities for everybody living in the region to achieve their ambitions.

THe blueprint states: "THe challenge of the strategic economic plan is to show the economic potential of our region.

"We are not a city region but we have the potential to be one of the key drivers of growth in the UK." Jonathan Sharrock, Coast to Capital's chief executive, said: "We have identified five unique and ambitious opportunities for the region that will position us as a national leader, drive the growth the region needs and help us make a significant contribution to the UK economy."

Choirs enjoy a bigger festival MORE than 100 singers joined together for the roof-raising finales of an annual festival in Bognor Regis.

Some 200 men and women took part in the town's second ChoirFest to build on the success of last year's initial version.

A total of nine choirs showed their vocal skills to several hundred spectators at the Regis Centre during last weekend.

Both days ended with the choirs forming an ensemble for the German folk song, Music Alone Shall Live.

One of the event's hosts, James Etheridge, said: "THis festival is a great platform for community choirs to come together, network and listen to each other perform different songs from different genres.

"THis is a completely non-competitive event. All those in ChoirFest sing for fun.

"THey love singing. THey join the choirs for an hour and a half a week and they don't have to think about anything else."

ChoirFest began as a single day at the Regis Centre last year after James and his fellow organisers of Bersted Arts - Michael Gattrell and Will Hackett - joined with Hazel Latus, of the centre's operator, Arun Arts, to stage a community event.

RAFA 381 Branch Choir co-ordinator Sue Coyne said: "THe event was extremely well organised. From start to finish, you know what is happpening.

"I spoke to all our singers afterwards and they had good feedback from all of them. Singing makes you feel good and this is a great event to do it at."

Harry helps inspire budding cartoonists NATIONAL newspaper cartoonist Harry Venning has encouraged Bognor Regis residents to draw upon their sense of humour.

Mr Venning hosted a workshop in the town’s youth and community centre in which he showed those who took part how to release their inner cartoonist.

He has 30 years of experience behind him and is best known for his Clare in the Community weekly cartoon in The Guardian and its spin-off BBC Radio 4 series.

He said: “I believe there is a cartoonist in everybody. People don’t think they can because they have not been able to give it a go.

“But, the thing about being a cartoonist, is it’s not about the drawing. It’s about the humour – and everyone thinks they have a sense of humour.

“As long as people recognise what you have drawn in a cartoon, and as long as it’s funny, that’s all you need.”

THe idea for social worker Clare came from a former girlfriend and Mr Venning.

58, began to draw for the now defunct Care Weekly.

Its closure saw him submit some cartoons to The Guardian where they have become a staple item in its Society pages on Wednesdays.

“I enjoy these workshops because it’s nice to get out and meet people. It’s quite solitary sitting in my studio in Brighton.”

His 90-minute session was the latest in a series of events hosted by the Bognor

Institute of Laughter as part of the Making THeatre Gaining Skills CIC. THose who went along were looking forward to the chance to pick up advice from a leading professional cartoonist.

Among them was Bryn Gadd, 28, who works in the blood pathology lab at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester. “I’m a budding cartoonist or artist and I have been trying to find ways of breaking into those two fields as a professional.

“I’ve sent some work off but it is very hard. I’m hoping to get some pointers here about what I should do," he said.

“My job pays my bills but drawing is my passion. I have always been drawn towards creative activity. I love the idea of being able to create something that makes people laugh.

“THere’s a real challenge of being able to create the whole word in two or three frames. It’s an entire story from start to finish in such a small space.”

Accountant Claire Burt, 44, was another participant. She said: “THis looks like fun. I don’t get enough opportunity to explore my creative self.

“THat’s why I thought I should come along. I used to draw but it’s not something I’ve done as an adult.

“I’m all in favour of creative expression. It’s really good to do and good for your mental health.”

Hilary Strong, founder of Making THeatre Gaining Skills CIC, said: “THe

Bognor Institute of Laughter is all about developing interest, enthusiasm and talent for running gigs.

“We are starting from the point of view of who wants to get involved in comedy and who has an interest in writing or drawing.

“A lot of people think of comedy as someone doing stand-up but there is a lot more to comedy than that. THere’s cartoon drawing, street theatre and sketches, for example.

“We want people to come along and take part for the fun of it. Hopefully, we can build up a network of people.”

THe aim was to stage a gig, probably at the Regis Centre, this autumn of work produced by the institute, she added.

Dancers' delight for charity AN EVENING of Dance was held on Saturday night at Bersted Community Centre showcasing dancers performing routines on poles in aid of charity.

Organised by instructor and licence holder, Sue THompson of Pole Passion, the show was raising money for My Sister's House.

THe charity supports vulnerable women who are characterised by a range of issues including histories of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, trauma, and mental health problems.

Students from Pole Passion fitness classes in Bognor Regis, Felpham, Bersted, Angmering and Chichester choreographed and performed routines on stage to an audience of family, friends and the public.

Co-organiser and Bersted and Angmering instructor, Amy White said: " I feel extremely proud and humble to be involved in such a wonderful showcase and for such an important cause, not only am I so very proud

of all my students who performed but all the other students and instructors."

A donated unicorn cake handmade by Sue's sister, Jemma Ghosh raised £80 in a silent auction and extra funds were raised in a raffle.

Founder of My Sisters' House, Julie Budge said: "What a fabulous and mesmerising event.

"I know only too well how much effort would have gone in to such an event and all the performers and organiser should stand tall for such an amazing achievement which will have an impact on many people.

"For us, the evening has special significance because the money raised will be used to provide more outreach work which reaches more disadvantaged women and means the word about My Sisters' House reaches out much further to those who need us.

"Together, we have made a difference to the community."

THe total raised on the night was £921.85.

` Science event HUNDREDS of young people were encouraged to take an explosive interest in science in Bognor Regis yesterday.

THe latest Big Bang fair in Butlin's was set to be attended by 500 students - one of whom might follow in the footsteps of Chichester-born astronaut Tim Peake.

THe annual event is aimed at allowing businesses and staff from universities and colleges to help students realise that science, technology, engineering and maths are exciting subjects.

One of the organisations which is involved in the event is the Coastal West Sussex Economic Partnership.

One of its directors, Caroline Wood, said: "THe example of Chichester-born astronaut Tim Peake shows young people that the opportunities offered

by STEM subjects are endless, even including the option of exploring the universe and other worlds.

"If we are to raise the economic performance of the coast, we must invest in our young people to give them the skills to compete locally and nationally in the world of work.

More than 25 businesses, colleges and universities attended the event.

Baby Buddy has been created to help parents and parents to be during pregnancy, birth and the first six months of a baby's life.

West Sussex County Council has joined with national charity Best Beginnings to officially launch the app.

It can help to set goals, keep record of any concerns and track development.

Inspectors rate care outstanding A HOMECARE company that provides support for older people in Chichester and Bognor Regis has been awarded the highest accolade in the care sector.

Home Instead Senior Care has been rated as outstanding by independent regulator, the Care Quality Commission.

Chef Mark Dunne, from Chefs on the Move, ensured plenty of delicious food to enable everyone to dance the night away.

AS MOTHER'S DAY looms large on the horizon and thus some celebratory imbibing may be de rigueur, off I duly headed to an underrated supermarket provider, namely Morrisons in downtown Bognor Regis.

My first foray into the white wine section led me to a 2017 Lindeman 's Bin 65 Chardonnay priced at £5.50 and whose easy-drinking style was most evident.

It proved to be refreshingly clean on the palate with peach and melon flavours to the fore and had almost a mineral feel and, at this price, is jolly good value for money.

THe Morrison 2016 THe Best Gavi on offer at a reduced £6.50 sported an apple and blossom nose and exuded pear and stone fruit flavours and was decidedly light and elegant and well balanced and well worth a punt, especially as we are approaching, fingers crossed , warmer climes!

My final two white selections were at the heady price of eight readies and

above its weight and turned out to be fragrant and complex, slightly creamy in texture with green apple and grass complementing delightful white peach flavours and a wine of distinction and one to snap up!

In terms of reds, the 2016 Villa Verde Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, priced at a modest £4.50, proved irresistible as my red wine of the week with fresh tar and cherry in abundance - a no-brainer as a purchase and a great pair to spaghetti bolognaise! Priced under £7, the 2013

Lemon and garlic chicken with couscous

Method 1. Remove and discard the skin from the thighs.

Grate the zest from the lemons and set aside.

Squeeze the lemon juice into a large bowl with 2 tbsp of the oil. Season, add the chicken and toss to coat. Cover and set aside for 30 minutes (or see tip.)

2. Heat a large griddle pan over a high heat, then sear the thighs for 5 minutes on each side. Reduce the heat and cook for 5-10 minutes more until cooked through.

3. Meanwhile, thinly slice the garlic and onion. In

a frying pan, heat ½ tbsp of the remaining olive oil over a low heat. Fry the garlic and onion for 5 minutes until soft.

4. Heat the stock in a small pan until it comes to the boil. Put the couscous in a heatproof bowl, pour over the stock, cover and stand for 5 minutes. Uncover and fluff up with a fork, then stir through the rest of the oil and the onion and garlic mix. Chop the herbs, then mix through the couscous with the lemon zest and season.

Serve with the chicken, garnished with extra mint.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup (4.5 oz.) all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup powdered sugar • 1/4 cup chopped pistachios • 6 tablespoons (3 oz.) salted butter, cubed • 1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese, softened • 2 teaspoons lemon zest plus 1 Tbsp. fresh juice (1 lemon) • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped • 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Mini Strawberry Tarts

Method 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 8 (3 1/2inch) round, 1-inch-deep mini fluted tart pans with removable rims, and place on a large rimmed baking sheet. Process the flour, powdered sugar, and pistachios in a food processor until nuts are finely ground, about 1 minute. Add the cubed butter to processor, and pulse 6 to 8 times or until mixture resembles coarse meal. Press about 4 1/2 tablespoons of the flour mixture on bottom and up sides of each tart pan.

2. Bake in preheated oven until lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove tart pans to a wire rack,

and cool completely (about 30 minutes).

3. Beat the cream cheese with an electric mixer at medium speed until smooth. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and beat until well blended. Gently fold the whipped cream into cream cheese mixture until incorporated. Spoon about 5 tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture into each tart shell. Cover tarts with plastic wrap, and chill 4 to 24 hours.

4. Toss together the sliced strawberries and 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, and spoon on tarts just before serving.

Community News & Views MORE than £14,000 has been awarded to good causes from the latest Pagham Pram Race.

Its organising committee was delighted to be able to present the bumper amount to the representatives of 33 organisations.

THey braved the elements of last week's cold spell to ensure the presentation ceremony at the Inglenook Hotel in Pagham was a great success with just under 100 people in attendance.

Pram race chairman Michael Warren handed out the grants, from £200 to £1,000.

"We are always pleased each year to be able to help our local good causes. It is very humbling listening to the great work they do in the local community," he said.

THe latest race, held as always on Boxing Day, saw 42 entries make their way around Pagham to the delight of thousands of spectators. THeir donations helped to boost the total takings, along with other events earlier in the year. THe bucket collectors' challenge was won by Ron Halls with £441.03.

In second place was Kim Cooper (£238.57) and Jackie Warren (£178.27) was third. THey were also presented with their awards.

VOTING is open for this year’s youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament elections.

A total of 51 West Sussex young people aged 11 to 18 have put their names into the hat for the elections and people have the chance to vote for their favourite.

Voting for the two elections, which is open until March 31, runs side by side with separate roles up for grabs in the West Sussex Youth Cabinet and also the UK Youth Parliament.

THe youth cabinet is made up of candidates covering 24 areas in the county – up to two youth representatives per area – and they work together to give young people a voice.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: “From school lessons to shaping policies, the youth cabinet can have had a big impact on how we look at things in the county which is why it is so important that as many people vote as possible.

DELIGHTED musicians have raised almost £5,000 at their latest annual concert in Bognor Regis.

A near capacity audience enjoyed the 2018 version of the Revival of the 60s event at the Riverside Caravan Centre in Shripney Road.

THis resulted in the bumper donation being presented to Charlie Fielding.

THe two-year-old from Angmering has a rare genetic condition, arteriovenous malformation, which has paralysed him from the waist down.

Proceeds from the Sixties revival night, pictured above are some of the musicians with Charlie, will help to pay for him to benefit from physiotherapy sessions at a specialist centre.

One of the those behind the concert, Roy Haines, said: "I am pleased to say that the event this year was a big success.

OPERA music by Arthur Sullivan will be featured in tomorrow's concert at Bognor Regis Music Club.

THe programme includes excerpts from Kenilworth, The Beauty Stone and The River, as well as a complete performance of The Foresters.

THe performance will be given by musical director Geoffrey Porter, pianist Nigel Smith, narrator Marion Porter and singers Los Ladrones, pictured above.

"I am sure the money we raised will go a long way in helping the brave little boy, Charlie."

THe concerts will reach their tenth anniversary next year.

THe date has been set already for February 16, 2019.

"We hope to make this a special occasion," said Roy. "THe event has now become an important part of the local music scene and entertainment calendar.

"It has to date raised of sum of almost £51,000 for local charities and good causes.

"THis is due, in no small part, to our loyal audience who have supported us over the years."

Original artists from the sixties delight the audiences at the concerts.

THose who took part in last month's event included THe Detours and Friends, Johnny Devlin, THe Diamonds with Pete Manville and Roy Haines and THe Southbeats.

Music club chairman Chris Coote said: "We are delighted to welcome back Geoffrey Porter and Los Ladrones to the club and are sure to have an entertaining and intriguing evening as we listen to these little known works set to music by one of England's greatest composers."

THe concert at the club's concert room, 2 Sudley Road, starts at 7pm. Entry at the door is £6 for members, £8 visitors and £4 students.

CHARITIES and community organisations working in the Arun and Chichester areas could become 'millionaires' this year.

THey can follow the example of the groups who turned to VAAC for help in 2017 and raised a total of £1,760,832 through funding applications.

Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester can offer a range of assistance to help organisations to grow and achieve their aims.

One group which gained the benefits of VAAC's help in the past couple of years was Pagham and District Residents' Association.

Iain Balch, one of its officers, said: "We have been extremely fortunate to have VAAC's help and guidance in two major projects, one applying to become a charitable incorporated organisation and the other to apply to various organisations for grant funding for a new minibus.

"We had never done these things before and VAAC's extensive knowledge and unstinting help enabled us to make the best possible applications with outstanding results.

"Not only are VAAC extremely professional in all they do, but they have a very high customer ethic which gives a great comfort factor when undertaking these highly important tasks.

"I can't recommend them highly enough for all they do in this complex area."

Membership of VAAC - which is based at Bognor Regis Town Hall - is free.

It entitles organisations to one-to-one advice from the development team, as well as access to training and networking events, weekly e-bulletins with news and events from the area's voluntary sector and a monthly Funding Focus newsletter among other benefits.

As well as the funding secured, VAAC advertised 192 volunteer opportunities for its members, provided one-to-one support to 133 organisations and 232 people attended its training events.

THese covered subjects such as first aid and health and safety, safeguarding, data protection and reading a set of accounts.

THe activities enabled help to be given to put policies and procedures in place, swap ideas and find out best practice from fellow organisations.

PEBBLE painting is a Chichester cancer centre's new project. #CancerWiseRocks invites members of the public to decorate a pebble or a stone, add the scheme's hashtag on the back and hide it for someone to find.

Whoever discovers the pebble is encouraged to share a photo of the find on the centre's Facebook page and either keep it or leave it for someone else to find.

Emma Neno, of CancerWise, said: "It's all about raising awareness and funds for us in the West Sussex and south east Hampshire area.

"It is about getting creative, being outside with your friends, young family and children and having fun - spread a little happiness and make people smile.

"Finding a CancerWise Rock is like discovering treasure and brings out the child in everyone."

THe initiative was launched in Littlehampton last Friday.

Within three days, more than 1,200 members had joined the #CancerWiseRocks group on Facebook.

Southway Primary School in Bognor Regis has its after-school art club involved and a host of organisations in Littlehampton has agreed to take part.

CancerWise is an independent charity which offers professional and caring support to people with cancer and their families around West Sussex and south east Hampshire.

Its services include counselling, art therapy and gentle exercise.

First World War memorial in Eastgate Square

By Dr Ross Wilson, University of Nottingham THE FIRST anniversary of the Armistice in 1919 brought ideas about remembrance to the fore as the wider nation came together to mark the event with a two minute silence as instructed by the proclamation issued by King George V. THe focus on commemoration in the city that the two minutes of silence had brought was also fuelled by the tremendous national response to the Cenotaph in Whitehall. THis temporary structure, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944), drew huge crowds in London in November, 1919, and proved so popular that it was decided to build it as a permanent memorial. By January, 1920, Cicestrians were demanding a similar construction for the city and over 600 signatures were obtained as a formal protest against the Guildhall scheme.

As a solution, a cenotaph in Eastgate Square was forwarded. THe design of a cenotaph was favoured during a meeting in February, 1920, as it was thought that it enabled ‘all creeds’ to be remembered rather than it being a purely Christian sacrifice. Similarly, the site in Eastgate was suggested as it was thought that a memorial in the cathedral grounds would appear to favour one denomination over others in a city which had a variety of Christian practices.

To begin planning for this structure, the town clerk advertised that all relatives of men who had died during the war send the details of the deceased so they could be included on the memorial. Only those who had resided in the city before their enlistment were to be included, this ensured that the site would

be the focus for local people by enabling residents to mourn their dead whether those who had fallen were living in the city or had once lived within Chichester.

A house-to-house collection for the city’s war memorial was launched in March, 1920, to raise funds, with over £370 collected within two months. By September, 1920, the design for the city’s war memorial had been chosen after a competition initiated by the War Memorial Committee. THe winning design was from H. Inigo Triggs of the architectural firm Unsworth and Triggs. With a strong traditional element in its motifs, redolent of a medieval cross, the memorial met the demand from the committee of a sympathetic design that suited the ancient city.

Funds for the war memorial were donated

by Cicestrians at an increasing rate in a variety of ways. Indeed, a charity football match was held in Priory Park in September, 1920, which saw over £40 being raised for the scheme.

A whist drive, which was organised in the Assembly Rooms in October, also proved to be a very profitable for the war memorial fund with over 200 tickets sold.

On July 27, 1921, the memorial with the names of 351 individuals was dedicated in Eastgate Square by Field Marshal Sir William Robert Robertson (1860-1933) one of Field Marshal Douglas Haig's senior staff.

THe unveiling of the memorial was a highly impressive event in the city. A Roll of Honour booklet was produced and issued by the Chichester War Memorial Committee for the dedication of the War Memorial. It too records the names of the men of Chichester

who gave their lives in the Great War. THe Mayor and city councillors paraded from the Council House to Eastgate Square while veterans who had marched from the Drill Hall on East Walls lined the route along East Street to pay their respects.

Large crowds had gathered to watch the event on the streets while others stood around the windows of the buildings surrounding the memorial to gain a glimpse. Field Marshal Robertson spoke of the sacrifice of both the dead and the living during the ceremony as he asked Cicestrians to always keep the memorial as part of civic life.

Although money for the war memorial was still needed, fund-raising schemes continued into the next few months and the final deficit was not paid until the following year. THe memorial had become part of the city. It provided a place of mourning that was used by citizens. THis is indicated in the reports of September, 1922, which highlighted how jam jars had been placed around the site to enable mourners to keep flowers next to the memorial.

As the fourth anniversary of the end of the

war was marked, Cicestrians had begun to get on with everyday life, but the memorial ensured that the war would not be forgotten.

A decision was made to move the memorial to its current position in Litten Gardens in 1940 due to alterations to the road layout in Eastgate Square.

After the Second World War, four more horizontal stone tablets were added at the base of the monument recording the fallen of this subsequent conflict.

In 2015, the memorial was given Grade II listed status and was described as “an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the ultimate sacrifice made by so many from the Chichester area in the conflicts of the 20th century”.

Every year, on Remembrance Sunday, the city of Chichester remembers the fallen.

THe Mayor and city councillors, along with the chairmen of Chichester district and West Sussex county councils process to the War Memorial to attend a short service and observe the two minutes' silence.

Volunteers are required to help with the cleaning of cages, feeding and general animal care.

The sanctuary is open 7 days per week from 9am - 5pm; volunteers would be required a minimum of one day per week. You should be keen on animal welfare but also prepared to do dirty chores of cleaning cages and feeding wildlife patients. They are also looking for volunteer Animal Ambulance Drivers to provide transport for injured birds from within a wide area to the hospital at Sidlesham, and people to help at their charity shop in Selsey.

Family Activities Volunteer – Chichester Cathedral Learning and Engagement Department Chichester Cathedral is committed to supporting people of all ages to learn from the unique and rich environment.

Volunteers play an important role in assisting both children and adults to learn about the Cathedral past and present. Family Activities volunteers support work

in the Learning and Engagement Department. They undertake a variety of tasks including welcoming families to the Cathedral, helping at art and craft workshops and helping with trails inside the Cathedral, as part of the Family Activities programme. These Family Activity Days take place five days a year in the school holidays aiming to warmly welcome families, local and visiting, into Chichester Cathedral and help them feel part of Cathedral life. The activities encourage families to have FUN and enjoy spending time together doing creative activities and leave the Cathedral having understood more about the Cathedral - the building, its work and its living community.

Social Fundraiser (Bognor Regis) – Guide Dogs The Guide Dogs charity provides guide dogs and rehabilitation services for blind and partially sighted people to enable them to make the best use of their mobility. This role can be as exciting as you want to make it! Primarily you will be assisting the local fundraising team in promoting and taking part in a variety of activities to raise money for Guide Dogs. If you are particularly enthusiastic and want to organise your own ‘stand-alone’ or ‘challenge’ events to raise money, they are happy to

help support this. Tasks might include: street collections on ‘flag’ days - holding a money bucket and talking to the public, helping on information and merchandise stalls at local events such as fetes and taking collection boxes or envelopes to local businesses.

City Angel Volunteer (Chichester) – City Angels City Angels aim to bring a calming presence to the city streets and help anyone in need. They are 66 volunteers, mainly from local churches, who walk around the city centre streets in teams of 6-8 every Friday and the first and last Saturdays of each month, from around 10pm 2am or later. City Angels carry rucksacks with basic first aid kits; water bottles; a dustpan and brush to sweep up broken glass etc; flip flops to give out to protect bare feet from glass on the streets; and wet wipes to help clean up anyone who may have been sick. City Angels carry radios enabling communication with each other and with police and door security staff. They offer free hot drinks from a mobile coffee van, and generally assist anyone in need, in whatever way they can. City Angels volunteers also attend St Richards Accident and Emergency department, to support those in the waiting area.

Blues may use young guns as they PostSport seek revenge over south coast rivals CHICHESTER RFC return to action tomorrow looking to avenge defeat on a familiar foe.

THe Blues, who have not played for three weeks, welcome Sussex rivals Brighton to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm) for the penultimate home game of the season.

Scott Ashley's side, who sit fourth in the London Division One South, will be out for revenge after being beaten 38-26 at their coastal neighbours back in November.

THat defeat all but ended the Blues' hopes of a swift return to national league rugby.

After a poor start to 2018, which saw them lose their first three matches, Chi have bounced back, sealing victories in two of their last three.

THis includes a 37-19 win over Chobham last time out. THat match saw Chi give debuts to two teens - 18-year-old Jack Martin, who is the son of club chairman Keith, and fly half Lewis Sampson, who is a former Seaford College pupil.

Another youngster who may feature is 18-year-old colt Josh Goodwin, who has been called into the England counties under-18s squad for a match against Ireland next month.

THe Seaford College scrum half has

represented Chichester at every age level and is a current member of the Colts team.

He was picked out after attending a trial in Stourbridge, where he appeared alongside the best talent from across the country.

Against very stiff competition, he was selected for the 23-man squad to play Ireland at Burnaby Road, Portsmouth, in two matches on April 4 and 7.

With a number of players at the counties level going on to play professionally and even represent their country, it is a big honour for the teen player. Everyone at the club was delighted for Josh and his family, which includes dad Stuart, who is a former Chichester player and current referee.

Paul Colley, Chi's director of rugby, said: "I first saw Josh playing for Chichester U16 a couple of years ago and could see straight away that he had real talent.

"We even brought him into the Colts early to try and develop him and his selection is great news for Josh and indeed us as a club.

"Josh made his first XV debut this season and, hopefully, he will have another run out with the firsts before the season finishes. We wish him all the best against the Irish.�

BOGNOR RFC's spell on the sidelines will extend to nearly a month as the Purple and Greens promotion push continues.

Because of a mixture of bad weather and bye weeks, the Hampshire Avenue side have not played in Hampshire One since the middle of February.

With another weekend off to come, secondplace Bognor will be interested spectators as their closest rivals are in action.

With four games of the season left, the Purple and Greens know that they are firm outsiders to close the ten-point gap on league leaders United Services Portsmouth.

But ,with just six points between them and Millbrook in third, Bognor know they can afford few slip ups in the run-in, which will start at home to Ventnor next Saturday. *Bognor under-16s lost out in the cruelest manor possible to local rivals Worthing by2827 points.

It what was an absolute classic of a match at Hampshire Avenue, the Purple and Greens

outscored the young Raiders five tries to four but were out-kicked to lose by a solitary point.

Bognor started brightly from the kick off and after shifting the ball wide skipper George Orchard touched down in the corner.

Gus Haplik and Bradley Corbould then combined in the centre to release powerhouse winger Cellan Robinson. He needed only a snifter and outpaced the cover to score under the posts - Ethan Clark converted.

Worthing hit back and managed to score two converted tries to go in 14-12 up at the break.

Bognor started the second half as they did the first, Haplik crashing over in the corner.

THen, slick hands from Arthur Wright saw Robinson scamper over for this second try.

Back came Worthing who scored down the blindside.

Bognor's number 8 Tommy Galpin put the home side back in the lead. But Worthing scored again and nailed the touchline conversion to seal the win.

DARTS: Friary Z's march to the Friday Benevolent Darts league was crowned when they comfortable defeated Newtown Amity in week 14 of the league.

Rob Collins averaged nearly 30 points a dart in the win which means Z are more than 40 points clear at the top of the division one table.

In division two, QEII Galleon are just three points clear of BRSA Ravens with both sides still having one match to play.

Newtown C are the winners of division three after easing to a 16-4 victory over Friary C. Dan Middleton was man of the match for the hosts.

City remain in hunt for title as rivals slip up in Storm Emma

Landmark for special vessel A SPECIAL regatta weekend of racing and an anniversary party has been planned for the 95th birthday of a boat made special on Chichester Harbour.

THis year will see the Solent Sunbeam class celebrate a remarkable milestone on the water with a weekend of back to back races at Itchenor Sailing Club on May 26 and 27.

THis pretty, classic, threeman keelboat was designed by Alfred Westmacott in 1923 and has its base at Itchenor Sailing Club on Chichester Harbour.

More than 30 of its type remain on offer at the club which includes the very first Sunbeam, Dainty, No 1, which is still actively raced today as are several boats that were built in the early 1920s.

THey will all be celebrated at the special event which will see sailors from near and far attend.

On each day, taster sessions will be available from 3pm and the anniversary party will be held at the club on May 27, from 7.30pm.

Long-time owner Mike Williamson explained why the boat was special.

He said: "Helming a Sunbeam is serendipity. You

leave all your problems ashore, and surrender to the sensuous joy of reacting to what she tells you."

THe boat has its roots back in the Victorian era.

A traditionally trained naval architect, Westmacott responded to a commission from three Hamble-based yachtsmen to design a racing dayboat that was not only pretty but one that could handle the boisterous conditions of the Solent.

THe fleet at Itchenor ranges from 95 years of age to new all-GRP and newly epoxied yachts, yet all racing on level terms in a one-design fleet.

Regular racing is highly competitive with no restrictions for tides on most weekends and THursday evenings from March to October.

Alongside regular racing in beautiful Chichester harbour, Sunbeams race at Cowes Classic Week and Cowes Week.

A sister fleet is based in Falmouth, Cornwall.

Julian Hawe, yacht skipper and Sunbeam crew, said: "THe boats are awesome - the class’s best asset is that in light airs it is just amazing. Sunbeams behave as a boat should."

CHICHESTER City have second in their sights as they return to SCFL Premier action.

Miles Rutherford's side face Loxwood at Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm) eager to press on with their promotion push.

City suffered a surprise 1-0 reverse against bottom side Littlehampton Town a fortnight ago.

Any hopes of making a quick return to form were foiled as Storm Emma hit, meaning they were forced to sit out last weekend.

But in the games that did take place, fifth-place Haywards Heath, sixth-placed Eastbourne Town and Peacehaven & Telscombe, in eighth, all dropped points.

It means Chi are currently third, just one point THree Bridges in second and six behind leaders Horsham YMCA. THree points tomorrow against Loxwood will put them in good position for the final six weeks of the season. City won the reverse fixture in October 4-2.

With a game in hand on the league leaders and a tasty showdown to come on March 20, Chi know the league title is still within their grasp if they can keep winning.

Semi final showdown for Lions Ne

PAGHAM chief Tony Shea says his side will 'go for it' as they look to seal a spot in the final of the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in their history.

THe Lions have been in sparkling form in the county knockout cup - with the run to the last four seeing the SCFL Premier side knock out Isthmian South sides Lewes and Horsham on the way.

But Pagham will have their work cut out in their bid to reach the show-piece final at the American Express Community Stadium, having to defeat Brighton & Hove Albion's

under-23s side on Tuesday night (7.15pm).

With hundreds of people expected to pack into the Sussex County FA headquarters in Lancing for the match, the Lions chief believes his side will put in a good performance against a team which is full of youth international players.

Shea said: "It's great to be in the semi-final.

It will be really tough game but it will be magical if we can get to the final "Obviously they are a decent outfit, they are all professionals and it will be very hard task.

But we will go for it and enjoy the occasion."

f Pagham hope to be celebrating cup success

Pagham's preparations for the match were dented when their league match against Broadbridge Heath last weekend was postponed because of the snow.

With some of the other sides around them managing to get on the pitch, the Lions have now slipped to seventh.

But, with six points separating Pagham and THree Bridges in second, the Nyetimber Lane side know that they are still in contention of a top-two finish.

THey are helped in that task by having the best goal difference in the league, having smashed more than 70 goals so far.

Tomorrow, the Lions travel to play midtable Lancing in the league (3pm) looking to close the gap on the sides above them.

With the Lancers having lost their past five games, Pagham will be favourites to bag all three points on the artificial surface at Culver Road.

THen, three days later, they will return to Lancing to play the Seagulls' young guns for that semi-final.

With Brighton's under-23s regularly facing off against fellow Premier League youngsters, Pagham will need to be at their best if they are to spring a surprise.

THe winners will play League Two side Crawley Town, who defeated SCFL Premier side Saltdean United 6-0.

Tickets, which are only available on the gate, are £10 adults, £5 seniors, £3 juniors.

Derby day looms for Blues of Selsey GROUNDSMEN across West Sussex will be pleased to see the back of the Beast from the East after snow and ice wiped out much of last weekend's football programme.

Matches involving Selsey, Sidlesham, Bosham and Chichester City Ladies, as well as a host of Saturday and Sunday league matches, were all postponed because of the cold snap. But with temperatures a little more spring-like, a full programme of fixtures are planned for this weekend.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey have a local derby against Midhurst & Easebourne away tomorrow (3pm) to look forward to.

THe Blues have slipped to eighth in recent weeks as the weather and a run of one win in five has seen them lose ground on the sides

around them.

But Steve Bailey's side have the upper hand on Midhurst this term, defeating them twice already both home and away In SCFL Division Two, third-place Sidlesham face a tough test of their promotion credentials when they travel to second-place Roffey (3pm).

Meanwhile, Bosham, who are fifth, visit Cowfold (3pm) looking to stretch their winning run to six.

Chichester City Ladies saw their FA Women's Premier League match against Gillingham postponed last Sunday.

THe Green and White army head to West Ham United on Sunday (2pm) for their first league fixture of 2018.

Cause for optimism as Rocks begin their bid to escape drop Next Game

CONCORD RANGERS (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

TWO MONTHS - that's how long the Rocks have to save themselves from the drop.

With 11 matches of the National South season to go, Bognor are second bottom of the 22-team league - eight points adrift from safety.

Having won only four games in the league all season, closing that gap will not be easy.

But a change of formation to three at the back has delivered a change in fortunes.

And now there are whispers around the Nye Camp that Jack Pearce's side can push on and perhaps perform the ultimate great escape.

Tomorrow is a crucial episode in what will be an 11-part series of high drama.

THe Rocks head north to Essex to face Concord Rangers tomorrow (3pm).

THe Canvey Island side are 17th and struggling of late, having lost their last three league matches.

THat run of poor form is not the only cause for optimism for Rocks fans.

A week off because of the St Albans postponement has given the team vital time to rest up ahead of the run-in ahead.

At the back, the change to three defenders looks to have given Bognor solidity at last while allowing the creative midfielders and overlapping fullbacks more time on the ball.

Up front, the return of Ollie Pearce alongside Jimmy Muitt is a boost.

So, too, is the availability of tall teenage

striker Stefan Ljubicic, back in contention after serving a three-match suspension.

THe Icelandic youth international, who is on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, saw red just an hour into his debut against Truro City.

It is one of a series of dismissals that the Rocks' small squad has had to cope with since the turn of the year.

Pearce said: "We have to take it on the chin. Some of the decisions we have had this season have been extremely difficult to take. THe penalty that was awarded against us [in the 2-2 draw] at Whitehawk, that was embarrassing.

"THey say that it levels out but it doesn't level out over one season, maybe over three but not one.

"We have not had the best decisions but people have to understand these referees at our level are learning their trade. I totally support them and totally support what the FA are doing. But that doesn't help us now."

THe Rocks have a favourable history during visits to the Essex outfit.

Bognor fans may recall their last meeting at THames Road when goals from Ashley Robinson, Mu Maan and James Crane secured a 3-1 victory in the Isthmian Premier.

With Concord hovering above the bottom three, the Rocks know that a repeat of that victory will not only boost their own tally but also further damage a relegation rival.

Three at the back here to stay IT MAY have taken a few months, but it looks as though Bognor have settled on a winning formula.

After nine matches without a win in all competitions, the Rocks switched to three at the back against Braintree. It resulted in a 2-1 victory, the first at home in the league for six months.

THings remained the same in the narrow defeat at second-place Hampton & Richmond a fortnight ago. With 11 matches of the season to go and wins a must, word within the camp is that the 3-5-2 formation will remain - with Sami El-Abd, Manny Adebowale and Keaton Wood forming a strong unit which allows the rest of the team to push on.

Speaking to the Post this week, injured defender James Crane said: "It's about getting the best possible players out on the pitch and then it's up to them to perform.

"We all know each other's strengths and weaknesses - it's about working to the strengths and hiding the weaknesses.

"THe lads are buying into the mindset [of three at the back] but in truth the formation does not have a massive part to play in the game. What matters more, is winning your individual battles."

f A new look has helped the Rocks defence

A WEEK without football in March is quite a rarity.

But that was the situation facing us as the snow and ice hit the whole country, meaning that there were very few games at any level.

It's not something that happens a lot, and in previous years, a Saturday off has been a welcome break with the lads taking a bit of time off.

But given our situation, where we are in the table and the fact we are not doing as well as we'd like on the pitch, the decision was taken to have a full training session.

I'll be honest - it did resemble an ice skating session at some times!

But we all got through it and had a good time.

THe session itself was much like those that we'd do on a Tuesday or a THursday during the season.

We start by concentrating on fitness and having a blow out so we all keep ticking over in terms of our fitness levels.

THen it's on to shape or keep ball before we concentrate on an element of a phase of play that we want to focus on for the next match.

I'm pleased to say that spirits were high during the session.

No one likes getting up to go in early on a Saturday when there is no game.

But we have a good group in terms of togetherness and it was definitely valuable.

THe postponement of the match against St Albans means that the last time out was a 1-0 defeat away at Hampton & Richmond.

It was a game that in the first half we dominated and the second they dominated.

We had good chances but we could just not take them.

From the sidelines, I did think we would get something for the match.

Any points picked up away would have been a hell of a result given where we are and that they are second in the table.

We did our upmost to keep a clean sheet.

THe lads gave everything and the formation was right but we just needed to shut up shop.

Unfortunately, they got the goal which perhaps was down to some of the lads not having the physical fitness that comes with playing regularly.

We move on, though, with Concord this weekend THey are a difficult team to play against but we have a good record against them.

Last time we played them, we beat them. We got battered for 90 minutes and ended up winning 3-1.

I'll take the same again this time out.

We are under no illusions that they will be difficult to play against.

Essex sides are never easy. THey are always quite physical and there are not many in the crowd.

But we are always happy to dig in and try and get a result, so we will be looking at trying to get something from the match.

If there's one thing that we can say about the club is that the belief we can stay up will always be there with the lads.

Obviously, speaking to different people around the club they will always say that we will take one game at a time. But as players you are always aware of the bigger picture and what needs to be done.

THe feeling from the dressing room is that we will keep on going and keep on fighting until mathematically we cannot stay up.

We know it will be difficult but that's the approach we will always have.

As for me, well, the recovery after surgery is going well.

I'm still in a sling and will be for another three weeks or so.

THe shoulder is a bit battered and bruised but it's all looking good for a return next season.
