THe car manufacturer giant saw their planning application receive backing from the committee at the meeting on Wednesday.

Permission had been sought to build a car park for 492 spaces at the site in Westhampnett, as well as a selfcontained 40-space car park for THe March Church of England Primary School.

THe decision, which is subject to the resolution of outstanding issues relating to noise and A27 traffic impact, came after councillors agreed it would solve parking and safety issues occurring in

Stane Street and Claypit Lane.

Highways England had shown concern over the impact on the A27, arguing that additional trips from Bognor Regis would affect the A27 Bognor Road roundabout and A27 Portfield roundabout.

THe additional trips are as a result of the withdrawal of the shuttle bus from the Bognor Regis site.

Head of corporate relations at RollsRoyce, Andrew Ball, said: "Rolls-Royce

has worked hard to address the current parking issues. Additional car parking provision is the only logical solution and a number one priority for us.

"Rolls-Royce has a robust and well established travel plan incorporating a range of sustainable transport measures such as lift-sharing, park and ride subsidised public transport and cycle to work schemes."

Car park for March school is on plans From page one "As part of the application, Rolls-Royce is including, as a gesture of goodwill, a dedicated car park for the March CE Primary school. THis will ensure the safety of children, parents, teachers and local residents. THe school has lent enthusiastic support to the proposal.

Creation of a pedestrian link from the car par to the Rolls-Royce plan cuts through the existing landscape bounds and is included in the plans along with gated access to the car parks.

THe proposed hours of the car park will be from 6.30am to 10pm on Mondays to Fridays, and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.

A special zoned parking area will be in place for the staff working before 7am to reduce noise to the nearby housing development as well as acoustic fencing.

Cllr Mike Hall supported the application saying he was hopeful it would resolve the parking issues in the nearby roads.

He said: "Ever since Rolls-Royce have been there, they have been very good neighbours. One of the biggest problems is the fact that vehicles park in Stane Street on both sides of the road and also up Claypit Lane.

"THe other point is the car park dedicated to the school itself. Formerly we have had problems with parents pulling up on the pavement and the cycle path and children have opened their doors on to incoming traffic. THis will address that problem."

Cllr Richard Plowman said: "THe thing that I really like about this is the actual

community use. Many of us have gone up and down Claypit Lane at school time and the cars are parked all over the place.

"I think to actually provide this for the community, which will be much safer for the children, is a really good move. I think this is to be welcomed."

Cllr Simon Oakley agreed for the need of parking for both Rolls-Royce and the school but was uncomfortable supporting the application with outstanding information still required by Highways England.

He said: "Highways England are not signing off on this. THey have insufficient information of the full impact of what this level of parking capacity will have on the A27.

"THe justification of this car park is based on the number of vehicles that already have to park off site in various places. THat is only about half of the overall capacity that is being proposed here.

"I would be extremely uncomfortable to allow delegation to officers to determine this until we have a clear position from Highways England as to whether there will need to be mitigation on the A27."

Cllr Tricia Tull disagreed with Cllr Oakley. She said: "Why on earth do we have to wait for Highways England to make this comment?

"If the cars are going to end up on the A27 anyway, as long as where they join it is managed then that's fine.

"I want to make a plea for trees, proper trees, within the site because there is nothing starker to look at then an area of tarmac which is unbroken and barren."

A CHICHESTER restaurant has announced a ban on plastic straws.

Carluccio’s, the 103-strong group of Italian restaurants founded by the late Antonio Carluccio, has announced that it will remove plastic straws from all of its eateries by the end of the month.

A sustainable, biodegradable paper alternative will be available to customers who specifically ask for and/or need a straw.

Chief executive Mark Jones said: “In 2017, Carluccio’s used 1.5 million straws across its UK business and around half a million in London alone.

"Operating a large national group means we have the power to make a

real difference.

"Removing plastic straws is us playing our part in reducing the volume of plastic that significantly damages our environment and wildlife."

As reported in last week's Chichester Post, Chichester District Council has confirmed it is able to recycle coffee cups but not straws.

A spokesperson said: "Paper cups and paper takeaway coffee cups can be placed in your recycling bin.

"Please make sure no liquid remains in these cups. THe plastic lids can also be recycled. No straws please."

Myrtle's got head for heights for hospice

Celebration of 25 years at college f Myrtle Green with a photograph of her late husband

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN 83-YEAR-OLD woman is taking a leap of love to help raise money for charity.

Myrtle Green, from Bognor Regis, has signed up for a skydive to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Mrs Green said: “St Wilfrid’s were fantastic when my husband, Bill, had pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at home with all of his family around him.

“Bill was a fighter. He was diagnosed on October 4, 2012, and told he had only six months to live. He kept going until December 29, 2015.”

Mrs Green is taking the 10,000-foot freefall parachute jump on March 24, almost a week before her 60th wedding anniversary on March 29.

THe daredevil pensioner climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge last year when she went on a trip to visit her sister.

She said: “I always wanted to do it, so I combined it with a trip to see my sister, who I hadn’t seen for 25 years.

"I have to admit I never thought of skydiving before, until I saw the newsletter from St Wilfrid’s where they were asking for volunteers.

"I thought, ‘I can do that’ as I am not frightened of heights or flying. My family have all been really supportive and the doctors said it was OK. I do walk every day to try and keep fit.”

Helen Humphry, communications officer at St Wilfrid's Hospice, said: “We are totally bowled over by this amazing lady. What an inspiration.

"THe money she raises will be used to help us continue providing end of life

care to patients and support to their families and loved ones. It just goes to prove you are never too old!”

Mrs Green has plans to take her ventures further by participating in an abseil down Spinnaker Tower next.

She said: “I have already decided I’m going to do the abseil next year, hopefully. I’d like to raise the money for Angel Radio, where I volunteer.”

Mrs Green has volunteered on reception and taken callers' requests for the radio station for about 18 months.

She said she listened to the station for years and decided to volunteer to help take her mind off things and keep busy.

VISITORS from 25 countries united to celebrate a very special anniversary at Chichester College.

Anglia Examinations marked its 25th anniversary with Chichester College with a two-day conference and celebration.

In 1993 the college took over ownership of Anglia, with the aim of expanding the examination body into a truly global organisation.

Since then, it has grown from offering several hundred English exams in Cyprus to delivering more than 120,000 in more than 40 countries in 2017.

Representatives from half of these, including delegates from Argentina, Bangladesh, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia and China came together in Chichester recently.

Liz Bangs-Jones, chief executive of Anglia Examinations, said: "We have seen Anglia flourish over the past 25 years.

` Thousands raised at musical evening THOUSANDS of pounds were raised at a special cabaret evening in Birdham.

THe musical event on Saturday evening saw performances by Michael Mates and William Godfree, giving an authentic performance of the favourite songs of Flanders and Swann.

THe cabaret evening raised over £3,500 for the new St James Community Centre, which is due to open later this year.

THe centre, which is next to the church, will provide a wide range of health, education and leisure services for the village and surrounding area on the Manhood.

` Pedestrian dies A 71-YEAR-OLD pedestrian who sustained serious injuries after being struck by a van has died.

THe collision, at 10.50am on THursday, March 1, occurred on the B2145 Selsey Road, Hunston, near Chichester.

THe man, named as Raymond Stenning, of Hunston, Chichester, was struck by a white Peugeot Boxer van.

Witnesses to the collision are still being sought and anyone who saw what happened or who has any other information is asked to contact police online or phone 101, quoting Operation Haymans.

Photographers to snap city beauty

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk KEEN photographers are being asked to capture the beauty of the Chichester district for English Tourism Week.

Organised by the Chichester Tourist Information Centre, the contest aims to showcase the best pictures of the city as captured by locals.

THe winning photos will be printed in a calendar, with each winner receiving a copy.

Photos can be taken on any type of camera and entered into one of three categories: colour, monochrome and

under-18.

All entries will be posted to a special album on the Chichester Tourist Information Centre's Facebook page, where a public vote will decide the four winners from each category.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, said: “THe aim of the competition is to encourage locals to share their favourite spots around Chichester district.

"We live in such a beautiful district, with so much to offer. THe photographs could be anything from popular tourist spots, to the stunning scenery.

“By offering an under 18 category, we hope to inspire younger photographers to get out and about and capture their favourite view of Chichester district.”

English Tourism Week is an annual celebration of English Tourism taking place from Saturday to March 25.

Chichester Tourist Information Centre will be hosting a series of events to highlight the value and quality of tourism in Chichester district.

Chichester Tourist Information Centre is run by Chichester District Council’s Novium Museum.

County's literature quiz sees Bishop Luffa take first place PUPILS from Bishop Luffa School have won the West Sussex Inter-Schools Literature Quiz.

THe year, eight pupils took part in the quiz, competing against 30 other schools.

THe winning team comprised of pupils Emma Lineham, Ellie Lambert, Evie Watterson and Lily Barkes.

Bishop Luffa had four teams of four pupils taking part, as well as eight reserves who played along.

THe C team came joint third, and Bishop Luffa’s other teams took top 10 places.

Pupils were required to have excellent general book knowledge, research the

life and work of four specific authors, and answer incredibly tough questions on specific books by those authors.

THere were four rounds of questions plus four visual rounds and a welcome round, and prizes were awarded for the winners of each round.

Mrs Regan, the librarian, said "All 24 pupils have shown incredible commitment, determination and team spirit in preparing for this quiz.

"I am proud not only of their achievements but their conduct today and the way they embody the values of our school. It’s not often reading wins you a trophy so I know they are delighted with their win – as am I."

Special award ceremony to honour those making a difference in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CIVIC award winners, councillors and guests gathered at the Assembly Rooms for a special award ceremony.

THe Chichester City Council Awards held last THursday evening celebrated members of the community who work tirelessly.

Among the winners of the Civic Awards, was Ann Willard, a volunteer for St Wilfrid's Hospice.

Cllr Clare Apel said: "For 12 years, Ann has single handedly organised and managed the book section of St Wilfrid's Hospice shop situated at Summersdale.

Her efforts have brought about more than half a million in receipts for books alone."

Ms Willard said: "I would like to say how delighted I am to receive this award. It is totally unexpected and it's a great honour.

"I have to mostly thank the people of Chichester because without them and their overwhelming generosity, I would not be standing here now."

Phoebe Ockenden received the Young Citizen's Award for her work with homeless people. In a speech, her mother said how honoured they were.

She said: "Phoebe was born very poorly and as a result of that the things that we take for granted in our children, Phoebe has really struggled with.

"Despite that, over the years, Phoebe has shown enormous compassion and

kindness and the Four Streets Homeless Project is one of the things she helped me set up. She's now one of 26 volunteers and whatever the weather, Phoebe is out helping people, despite her difficulties, who are more vulnerable than her."

New awards for 2018 included the Community Award for groups or organisations which have made an outstanding contribution to the city and its residents. THe winner of the award was City Angels, a team of volunteers in the city centre distributing free refreshments.

Buildings or places of local historic interest was the second new award this year. Winners were THe Old Priests House, Sadlers Warehouse and THe Malt House.

Chichester Mayor, Cllr Peter Evans said: "THe awards presented on the evening are given in recognition of our citizens who in the opinion of local people have given time and effort to the betterment of society in our city.

"THe proposers recognise that the Chichester area would be much the poorer without the dedication of the few who ask for no reward, but their efforts are valued by others.

"It also allows the city council, through the Heritage and Blue Plaque awards, to acknowledge some of our buildings of historic interest as well as promoting the excellent works undertaken to some of our treasured properties by residents who value the true historic link between our history and the modern day."

A thousand walkers to raise a hundred thousand pounds for tenth year walk THIS YEAR marks the tenth anniversary of the St Wilfrid’s Hospice Moonlight Walk.

THe hospice is calling on support to make this a recording-breaking year, by recruiting more than 1,000 walkers and raising an amazing target of £100,000.

St Wilfrid’s is also giving one free entry with a register of ten people or more.

THe five or ten-mile sponsored moonlit route around Chichester will be held on Saturday, May 5, and the hospice has promised some magical 10th anniversary surprises on the way.

Jerry Doyle, head of fundraising at St Wilfrid’s, said: “THe Moonlight Walk has always been one of the most moving and uplifting events organised by St Wilfrid’s.

"It has a joyous atmosphere, with participants

using the event as an opportunity to remember loved ones and help raise vital funds for the Hospice” “We want to make sure this year is an extra special, fun-packed event to show our appreciation to everyone who has supported it over the years.

"What better way to top off the celebrations than for us all to succeed in making the night a record-breaker Entry costs £16, and it is hoped that an additional £60 per person will be raised in sponsorship.

A VACANT piece of land in Chichester is set to receive 21 new homes.

THe derelict area in Warrendale is next to Centurion Way, off Plainwood Close, and would see a mixtures of flats and two, three and four-bed houses.

THe decision made at the district council planning meeting on Wednesday saw councillors debate the inclusion of a link between the homes and a popular footpath.

Chichester City Council rejected the original plans,, asking for the provision of a combined pedestrian and cycleway from the site to Centurion Way to be included.

At Wednesday's committee meeting, objector Mr Barry Aldridge said: "I have lived in Plainwood Close, adjacent to Warrendale for the last 34 years. THe site is in a settlement policy area and owned by a developer so we knew that development of the site was inevitable sooner or later and I will continue to support the development.

"In the 1990s, after the last gravel train had rumbled past and the track converted to Centurion Way, we were burgled twice and knew of at least five other burglaries close by.

Cllr Richard Plowman said: "I think there are a number of issues here. We need to make sure the access is used by pedestrians and cyclists and the difficulty we may have is if this becomes a very popular access into Centurion Way, cars would park in Plainwood Close."

Cllr Jane Kilby said: "We all knew these links were essential for this to go ahead.

I am really pleased to see that this being achieved on the development.

"I also disagree with Cllr Plowman on car parking. I think those using Centurion Way as cyclists will be using the whole cycling network."

Speaking after the meeting, Sarah Sharp on behalf of ChiCycle said: "THe decision today leaves me concerned on two points. Firstly the timing of the walking and cycling link.

"It is essential that this link is delivered right at the beginning of the development so that all the new residents can benefit from this easy way to get into the city. It would be a huge disappointment if the link was not delivered at this early stage.

"Secondly, the link needs to be direct.

From today's meeting, it seemed that the developer could prevent the link being a few metres long and require people to go into the new development and then out again onto Plainwood Close."

HUNDREDS of people travelled up to Brinsbury College at Pulborough to see the newborn spring lambs Around 1,000 people braved the wet weather to visit the campus’ Lambing Live events last weekend where they enjoyed meeting the new additions in the lambing shed, experienced the animal centre and enjoyed a tractor and trailer ride around the farm.

Some visitors were even able to witness lambs being born as several ewes delivered their lambs during the event, giving visitors a real taste of life at the farm.

More than 200 guests from First Steps Nurseries also joined in the fun, with people of all ages equally delighted as they met the newest arrivals at the Brinsbury farm.

` Canine Partners A MIDHURST dog charity has spent the weekend at Crufts.

Representatives from Canine Partners travelled to Birmingham to introduce their dogs.

Charlotte Leng, communications manager, said: "We had a great time at Crufts 2018. THe event provided a superb platform for us to meet new audiences and introduce our amazing dogs to visitors over the four days.

"One of our partnerships, Clare, with her canine partner Griffin, were shortlisted as finalists in the Kennel Club Friends for Life competition in the hero assistance dog category.

"Sadly they didn’t win the competition overall but thoroughly enjoyed getting behind the scenes and the exposure being involved in the competition will have given to Canine Partners."

No expansion for Billy's on the Beach over safety issues

THe decision was made at Wednesday's planning committee meeting because of safety concerns.

THe application was originally deferred at the meeting in October for a site visit and to address further worries raised by the foreshores officer.

THe cafe, located in Bracklesham Bay, had sought permission to extend the existing building to form an outdoor, enclosed seating area to the front of the building. THe proposal involved the relocation of the foreshore access route 4m further down. A new pedestrian crossing would also have been built as part of the application.

Diagrams were shown in the council meeting to show the impact of the access on trailers and boats using the existing slipway through the change in access.

West Sussex County Council Highways outlined that a 5.7m long car towing a 6m boat could navigate access onto the slipway.

Brian Reeves, from East Wittering and Bracklesham Parish Council, said: "My concern at the moment is that access is poor for people with disabilities.

"I have been trying to push a wheelchair around that area for a number of years and it is not easy at any time and it's very

difficult when it is crowded.

"I feel that the whole proposal is going to reduce access for those with disabilities, not aid them in any way at all.

"THe access for boat trailers is not going to be easy. THe economic development is a good thing but it can't be at the expense of disability access or our boating community."

Several councillors said they were torn between agreeing and refusing the application stating it was premature and did not meet their safety expectations.

Cllr Carol Purnell said: "I really am torn with this one. I want to support the expansion of Billy's but I have this horrific feeling that this is premature."

Cllr Les Hixson agreed, saying: "I echo what Cllr Purnell has just said. THe big concern is that we need to look again to get this absolutely right. My concern is mostly safety."

Officers argued that the committee members should base their decision on the application and not the existing site with current safety concerns in mind.

Cllr Tricia Tull said: "To be fair to the boating community who have used this for many years, we shouldn't be putting difficulties in their way.

"I have got some real issues here. As far as the business is concerned it's great.

But a business can outgrow its premises and just because it wants to expand, somewhere where it's not ideal to expand, is frankly not our problem.

"THis may well be something that is getting too big for its boots because it's been too successful."

Students Quiz Industry Professionals about Apprenticeship Schemes on Local Radio Station Students were recently given an amazing opportunity to quiz industry professionals from Rolls Royce and Chichester College about apprenticeship schemes.

The discussion was broadcast on Spirit FM during a recent visit to our College as part of National Apprenticeships Week.

Apprenticeships are an important route into employment which students need to be more aware of when making choices for their future.

Mr. Ellis, STEM Coordinator “I found the Spirt FM Apprenticeship event super fun and very informative,” said Hayley Edmead, Year 9 student, “with all of our questions being answered.

‘It was interesting to learn about why apprenticeships could be a good idea and a possible future choice for some people. Because of this event, I am now considering an apprenticeship as a path for my future.”

Public name new dinghies

THe new class is aimed at those looking for a relaxed sailing experience.

Free cancer support course A FREE support course is coming to Chichester hosted by a leading cancer charity.

THe course, run by Penny Brohn UK, will offer support to people with cancer and close supporters.

THe two-day Living Well programme takes place at Chichester Park Hotel, Madgwick Lane, on April 18 and 25, from 10am-5.30pm.

THe course addresses cancer’s physical and psychological impact and shows how healthy eating, exercise and relaxation can improve health and wellbeing, before, during and after medical treatment.

THE CHEAPEST property available to rent in Chichester at the moment costs £380pcm (per calendar month).

THe problem is it’s a single room in a house, rather than a whole property. THe cheapest property you could call your own is a onebedroom apartment in Woodlands Lane, which is up for rent at £625pcm.

On the other end of the scale, the most expensive property for rent in Chichester today is a four-bedroom detached house in Westhampnett, available to rent for £2,700pcm. It’s been on the market since November mind, so doesn’t look realistically priced to me!

THere are a total of 208 properties for rent, of which 128 are still available to rent and 80 are now ‘let agreed’.

THis is actually a significant improvement on the market a year ago, when just 111 homes were still available to rent; but it is still low for a city that houses 6,356 private renters.

It seems that rental supply remains tight in Chichester, which is limiting tenants’ choices, keeping rents resilient, and makes finding that dream home just a little bit trickier.

Silver place for Crufts pooch

Evie, a Pets as THerapy (PAT) dog, from Bracklesham, received the silver position at the weekend after she was short-listed for the top dog prize.

As reported in the Chichester Post in December, the Fox Red Labrador was nominated for the national HiLife PAT Dog of the Year award by the people she helped.

Ten-year-old Evie, owned by Alexandra Hughes, has been visiting care homes and a stroke ward. Evie also regularly visits a centre for adults with learning difficulties.

A retired Salvation Army officer with a rank of major, Alexandra said: “I am proud Evie was the nation's runner up out of nearly 6,000 PAT dogs.

“I am very proud of her and her work over nine years and the people whose lives she has touched.

As a Salvation Army major/officer, I feel it is my ministry to the community.

"I’d like to thank all the readers who voted for us and supported us as the winner was determined by public votes.

“Evie is happy to be home and back on the beach.”

THis year’s top spot went to Inca, a Labrador-Cross from Norwich. Inca spends much of her time visiting people in her community, going to schools and an adult mental health hospital, which specialises in care for the elderly.

She is also well-known for the soothing presence she provides in GP surgeries,

prisons, libraries and a dementia cafe.

A HiLife spokesperson said: “What amazing partnerships we saw demonstrated this year, between PAT owners and their pets.

“All of the finalists were worthy of the HiLife PAT Dog of the Year competition title and it was an honour to meet Labrador Evie at Crufts and her owner Alexandra.

New venue is match for old Pavilion look LOCAL history fan Chris Burstow has highlighted a piece of the past of Bognor Regis which could be revived for the future.

Mr Burstow noticed the similarity between the look of one of the town's most fondly remembered venues with the appearance of the theatre and conference centre proposed by the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

He was preparing to give a talk to a group in the town when he came across the type used by printers for posters for the former Pavilion.

THis contained an outline of the building's frontage - and it is a close match to the building put forward for the Hothamton site as part of the project's regeneration scheme.

Mr Burstow did a double take when he compared the look of the two buildings.

"I was struck by how similar the two buildings looked. I read the latest article in the Post about the regeneration scheme which contained an illustration of the planned venue - and then found the type block."

THe masthead for the posters was used to keep residents up to date with the cast of acts which appeared there.

It was passed on to the Bognor Regis Local History Society, which runs the museum, years ago for safe keeping.

THe original Pavilion was sited a few metres away from where the new centre is planned to be built if the proposals are agreed by a government planning inspector and if permission is granted by the land owner, Arun District Council, which has its own plans for the site.

THe 20th century building was an aircraft hanger built for the Norman THompson Aircraft Company in Middleton. A series of cancelled orders saw the company collapse and the former Bognor Urban District Council bought the building for about £17,000 in 1919. It was re-erected in the town centre and quickly gained a good reputation.

"My mum and dad met there and my mum said it had a beautiful sprung floor for dancing," said museum curator Mr Burstow.

Various artistes, dances and exhibitions brought audiences through its doors. It could accommodate 2,500 dancers in its main hall of 142ft X 173ft.

But a fire in its right hand tower broke out on the night of July 12, 1948, and the council decided to close the building after months of discussion.

It was demolished in 1949 or 1950, according to different reports.

THe museum, in West Street, opens for this year at 10am on March 24.

POLICE Community Support Officer Richard Moorey, based at Chichester Police Station, has specifically designed a presentation that highlights the common tactics used by scammers and fraudsters.

He talks about scam mail, courier fraud and computer fraud as well as how to deal with door to door callers, rogue traders and unwanted callers.

THe presentation takes between 45 minutes to an hour and there is an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

He is available to visit any groups across the Arun and Chichester districts.

Pupils shown science goes with a big bang HAND-BUILT racing cars, exploding crisp packets and superhero skills were on show at a science event in Bognor Regis.

THe exhibits at the latest BigBang@ Butlin's were aimed at helping hundreds of pupils from around the county learn more about the subject.

Businesses, colleges and universities showcased their wares to enthuse the potential engineers of tomorrow and open their eyes to future careers.

THe occasion proved to be a big success.

More than 550 primary and secondary pupils went away with big smiles and a realisation that science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects were far from boring.

One of the organisations behind the event was the Coastal West Sussex Economic Partnership. Caroline Wood, a director, said: "BigBang is now in its third year locally and it is really going from strength to strength.

"From exploding crisp packets to superhero powers in augmented reality, there were plenty of fun-filled activities which showed STEM subjects can be fun.

"It is only by investing in our young people and giving them the skills they need to thrive that we will be able to raise the economic performance of the coast.

"I hope that some of the hundreds of students who came today will be the engineers of tomorrow.

Last THursday's Big Bang formed part of Coastal STEMfest and was delivered

by STEM Sussex, the science outreach department of the University of Brighton.

With plenty of interactive hands-on activities and a fun informative show by Science Made Simple experts, businesses were given the chance to showcase the exciting career opportunities that STEM can unlock.

Charlie Allen, a graduate engineer at Shoreham-based engineering firm Ricardo, was one of those with an exhibit on behalf of 25 businesses in the coastal area. It enabled the young visitors to create a racing car before they tested it in a wind tunnel.

Charlie said: "It was great to see so many kids involved and getting excited about STEAM careers.

"THe BigBang shows the practical aspects of what engineering and science can bring in the real world rather than just experiments in the classroom. THat knowledge can make a difference to the world."

BigBang is one of the science events along the coast backed by the Coastal West Sussex Partnership of business, education and public sector members with contributions from Adur, Arun, Worthing and Chichester councils.

THe events are also supported by West Sussex County Council, Adur and Worthing Business Partnership and the

Sussex Learning Network.

It was set up to counter the trend shown in statistics that the number of students taking science-related A-levels in West Sussex declined across all subjects between 2012/13 and 2015/16, particularly those taking maths.

National statistics show the same situation exists with GCSEs, while participation rates in higher education across coastal West Sussex are poor.

A gender gap also exists - with only one in four STEM graduates being women.

Leaders from across the private, public and education sector said it was important to act now with events like BigBang to avoid a future skills shortage.

Geoff Edwards, the chairman of the Coastal West Sussex Partnership, said: "BigBang is all about getting youngsters to understand that science and maths are interesting subjects.

"THey are relevant to the workplace and relevant to opening up opportunities in the future."

Richard Hopkins, of leading agricultural business Fargro of Littlehampton, said: "Events like today are important for the industry as recruitment is very difficult.

"We want to encourage local people to understand the opportunities on their doorstep. THere's a lot of science and technology involved in agriculture. So, it's important we get in at the ground level so they know what we offer.

"Young people can bring innovation to what is quite a traditional industry."

A NEW initiative has been launched to bring young and old Eastergate residents together.

Nippers and Slippers is a social event at Eastergate CofE Primary School for pupils and the elderly to socialise for an hour.

Father Martin Powell, the vicar of Barnham, Aldingbourne and Eastergate, set up the group with four older people after seeing a television documentary about children visiting nursing homes. He said: "I thought it would be a really good idea after taking inspiration from the programme I watched.

"THis is just the first session which has been really good. It will build up more through word of mouth. It's great to see the generations learning from one another.

THe older people don't always get a lot of interaction and it's such a joy to see them smiling and to make the children learn through fun."

During the first session at the Church Lane school on Monday, the primary school pupils played parachute

games and read books.

Headteacher Catherine Wood believed it was a great opportunity for the school. She said: "It's a really good idea to bring generations together. For some of the children, they live far away or don't have any grandparents and they only spend time with their own peer group or immediate family.

"THis gathering broadens their experiences and builds on their confidence."

Shirley Renton Rose said: "Two of my children came to this school and my mother was a secretary of the school during the war. It's really fun being with the youngsters, some of whom are younger than my own grandchildren.

I would like to come back."

THeo Harris, who was reading with Shirley, said: "I have really enjoyed today. Playing with the balls was my favourite. I like spending time with older people."

Sonny Barker was reading with Bill Collins from Woodgate. He said: "I have enoyed today. We have read

Paddington Bear. I'd like to see Bill again at another Nippers and Slippers meeting."

Bill added: "I'd like to come back, perhaps join in once a month. I have three grandchildren and one great grandchild. THey don't live locally so I don't get the opportunity to see them regularly, maybe just twice a year."

` Traffic collision RESIDENTS of a North Bersted street fear a traffic collision could be a sign of things to come.

Chalcraft Lane resident Michelle Bean was the first person on the scene after the collision last THursday morning.

She said: "THe residents are objecting to the proposal of an additional 2,000 houses, plus vehicles, being built on this road.

"Everyday, the residents witness near misses. With additional vehicles...we are not long away from witnessing a serious, or possibly, fatal accident."

Chalcraft Lane was closed by police for several hours after the collision. It took place at the junction with Central Drive.

Arun District Council has earmarked farmland north of Chalcraft Lane for the new homes among the development proposals in its land use blueprint of the local plan.

Town's Rat Pack makes its debut A HOME town version of the Rat Pack was one of the highlights of the first big band rehearsal session in Bognor Regis.

Singers Pete Agate and Kev Wittering recreated the sound and the style of the famous fifties musicians at the latest session by Rox music and arts charity.

THis saw big band fan and musician Mike Bosley bring together top-class players at THe Hothampton Arms in London Road to form the Bognor Regis version of a big band.

A Rox spokesman said: "Fourteen musicians and four vocalists covered sounds ranging from the 40s through to the 70s and beyond.

"THey filled the evening with such style that everyone who heard will always remember.

HIGHLIGHTING the items that can be recycled was one of the aims of a waste event held in Bognor Regis.

THe West Sussex waste education trailer was parked on the seafront to pass on the message about how to cut down the amount of rubbish being thrown away.

Adam Swain, a West Sussex County Council waste prevention events advisor, said halfway through the visit: "We have had a steady stream of visitors. THere has been lots of interest and I would say dozens of people have come along.

"THey have been told on the national

He said: "National waste week is a great campaign for everyone to get involved with. It raises awareness of the importance of reducing waste and recycling more in a way that people can understand and remember. THe environment is a key issue for us all and we'd like to ask residents to think about how they can reduce their waste and recycle more."

Half a dozen helps to keep your skin looking beautiful KEEPING your hormones in balance will help you look radiant and feel great.

As we ladies reach a certain age, things start to change. Our moods may be a little lower than normal, we can start to get a few flushes and the skin can appear to be less plump! All signs of changes in our hormones. But what can we do about it and what are the best foods to eat to give us a helping hand in balancing these hormones naturally?

Keeping hormones on an even keel isn't a matter of aimlessly attempting to eat well. THese six key foods proactively balance your hormones, which can plump up skin, ward off wrinkles and even prevent acne, mood swings and lethargy: 1 - Quinoa: THis grain has become so popular, and for good reason too. It's packed with protein,

magnesium and phosphorus, and it has a hormonestabilizing trick up its sleeve, too.

Unlike other grains, which are higher on the glycemic index and can raise your blood sugar, quinoa is a complex carb high in protein, so it helps keep blood sugar stable.

THis prevents a domino effect where elevated blood sugar triggers higher insulin and, in turn, higher androgen levels. Try swapping grains like bread and white rice for quinoa. Half a cup of quinoa at least twice a week will ensure you’ll get the perks (more won't hurt).

2 - Almonds: If your skin is going nuts, turn to almonds. THey increase levels of the adiponectin hormone, which regulates blood sugar levels so you won't set off the increased insulin–increased androgen ripple effect. Studies have proven eating almonds shrinks levels of 'male' hormones like testosterone that can make your skin look drier and thinner. Eleven almonds a day [one serving size] or more is a great addition to your daily regime.

3 - Avocados: THese green beauties and other good fats, like olive oil and coconut oil, support the manufacture of healthy levels of cholesterol, a key component in hormone synthesis. THis will enable your skin to release and circulate the hormones it needs so it can stay healthy - and that's not avocados' only beauty benefit.

Healthier fats beef up your skin cells’ natural lipid bilayers so the membrane stays in top shape, allowing your skin to retain water better so it looks plump, not dry and dull. Eat half an avocado a day to get the perks of its monounsaturated fatty acids, fibre, potassium, vitamins C and E, and lutein, which helps prevent sun damage too.

Extra bonus: Salmon's anti-inflammatory properties can help calm skin eruptions like acne and eczema, too. Aim for a four-ounce serving of salmon twice a week.

5 - Eggs: If you're an egg whites only type of person, please understand this - though the yolk has got a bad reputation for being high in cholesterol, the variety it contains, HDL cholesterol, is actually the type your body needs to create hormones, leading to softer, more supple skin, and better balanced hormones.

6 - Greens: Don’t forget to eat your broccoli, spinach

and kale. Dark leafy greens contain the natural compounds sulforaphane and indole-3 carbinol, which improve your liver's ability to metabolize estrogen. And trust me, you want estrogen - it helps increase suppleness, which keeps your skin looking firm and taut, and bumps up blood supply to the skin.

As estrogen levels decrease, everything shrinks and pulls in. Help keep your levels up with at least half a cup of dark leafy greens per day, to keep the mood swings away!

MAJESTIC by name, somewhat majestic by nature - this wine warehouse company seems to have carved out a niche market for quality wines within the £10 price bracket, with the customary proviso that you purchase at least six bottles, and has, furthermore, launched its own-label range, namely the Definition series.

Off I duly headed to my local Majestic store in Chichester and began by selecting the 2016 Definition Chardonnay reduced this month to £9.99 of southern French provenance coming from Limoux in the Languedoc, a propitious area to focus upon if you are endeavouring to track down quality French Chardonnay outside of

Burgundy.

THe altitude of the vineyards ensures the wines here are balanced with a fresh acidity and rich, creamy honey aromas and toasty rich flavours of ripe peach characterise this wine - one that would be an ideal complement to a roast chicken dish.

My next two whites currently retail for just £7 99 and the 2016 Luis Felipe Edwards Gran Reserva Chardonnay from the Valle De Casablanca (Oh Humphrey!) proved to be easy drinking with toasty, buttery Chardonnay fruit on the palate and a creamy softness, atypical of usual Chilean Chardonnay!

THe 2016 Araldica Gavi was punctuated by light citrus flavours and a touch of lime and was pleasingly fresh and clean on the palate and a nice light- bodied apéritif.

My last two white wine choices involved pushing the boat out in pecuniary terms, commencing with, at the offer price of £11.99, a 2015 Domaine Sainte Rose 'La Nuit Blanche' Roussanne.

THe grapes are picked at night and hence the sleepless night reference and

this wine is made by an English couple, Ruth and Charles Simpson, in southern France, and is indubitably a wine that will not leave you indifferent!

Aged in oak , this wine is rich in texture and oozes peach and white blossom flavours and will either enchant you or overpower you!

My final white selection was that of a 2016 Domaine Cordier PouillyFuissé made from vines grown in both Fuissé village and Vergisson and, although at the lofty price of £18.99,

is a veritably sumptuous , full-bodied style of Pouilly- Fuissé with creamy, ripe tropical peach and the use of toasty oak affords a long harmonious finish alongside the sheer intensity of flavour - un vrai délice and an ideal accompaniment to a Stroganoff dish!

My red wine bargain of the week has to be the guv'nor, a new sort of wine coming from a range of Spanish regions including Toro, La Mancha and Valdepeñas plus an oak component.

THe front label only features the brand

name and no vintage is given - this red blend is soft and fruity with rich, ripe sweet red and dark fruit flavours to the fore and, at £6.99 an ideal party wine and well worth a punt!

My final selection, at an offer price of just £10.99, was the 2014 Château Côtes de Blaignan Médoc, whose lovely bouquet enticed me to imbibe and the lively fruit and hints of black pepper are now evident in 2018 and this wine should not disappoint!

Community News & Views A TEAM of builders got on their bikes to raise money for a new facility in Tangmere for people with dementia.

THe seven biking builders, pictured below, from Ascia Construction, successfully completed their route in aid of Dementia Support and its dementia support hub.

THey cycled from Rowlands Castle through Kingley Vale, Goodwood and Boxgrove to Tangmere, where they are building the hub for the charity. It took them just over three hours and their sponsorship came to ÂŁ1,652.

Many of the building team had a personal drive to complete the ÂŁ1.74m hub and help the charity as some members of their families have dementia.

Tim Brown, the site manager, said: "It went really well. We were very lucky with the weather and had a great journey down to the hub.

"It was great to see everyone turn up to welcome us over the finishing line. We were caked in mud and appreciated the hot drinks and cake."

THe company's managing director, Neil Cole, said: "We can see what a great charity Dementia Support is and how they enhance the wellbeing and quality of life for local people living with dementia.

"As a local business, it is great to be supporting a local charity, especially as we are already so involved with creating this new facility."

Lesley-Anne Lloyd, Dementia Support's head of corporate fundraising, said the charity appreciated the builders' support.

"THank you to our amazing biking builders for fundraising for the dementia support hub.

"It means a great deal to us all and we are extremely grateful.

We have a great partnership with Ascia and we appreciate their hard work and dedication to our customers."

FIREFIGHTERS and police officers across Sussex have joined together to pledge their support for gender equality.

West Sussex, East Sussex and Surrey fire and rescue services and Sussex Police combined as part of the global HeForShe movement.

THis is a global campaign created by the United Nations and calls for men to take action against inequality towards women.

It is supported by 1.3 billion people.

Representatives from the services joined together at Hove Community Fire Station last THursday to make the pledge and raise the flag in support of HeForShe. Dawn Whittaker, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's chief executive, said: "Standing up and standing out isn't always easy.

"Everyone benefits from HeForShe, that's why it works. Chris Blackwell was the first male fire officer in the UK to make an organisational pledge to the HeForShe campaign.

"What that means practically is that he is saying to his workforce that he expects people to support each other, not just when reducing risk, but at every opportunity. Who wouldn't want to stand up for that?"

Cllr Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "It's so encouraging to see leaders from these three counties coming together to pledge their support for women's equality.

"THis year marks 100 years since the first women were granted the vote in Britain.

"So much progress has been made since then and I believe thay, by working together, we will continue to see many positive changes."

HeForShe encourages people to move from acknowledging inequality to acting against it. It invites people around the world to stand together to create a bold, visible force for gender inequality.

ABOUT 80 West Sussex apprentices have celebrated their achievements at Chichester Cathedral.

THeir attended the ceremony during national apprenticeship week with businesses, friends and family members. THe apprentices, pictured above by Marston Robing, ranged from those in social care and digital marketing to engineering and technical theatre.

Cllr Richard Burrett, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for education and skills, said: "I would like to congratulate all of this year's graduates and the businesses that have supported them throughout their apprenticeships.

"I think it's great to recognise what can be achieved from an apprenticeship.

"For instance, a level 7 apprenticeship is equivalent to a master's degree. It's a fantastic opportunity to earn and learn.

"So, we are hoping to see this figure increase further in

MP NICK Gibb has praised Slindon College after he paid it a visit.

THe college is an independent school which specialises in children with specific special educational needs.

It has 71 pupils, of whom 15 are boarders. Most are boys.

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb, who is also the government's schools minister, said: "Slindon College provides

At the graduation ceremony, the apprentices were awarded a ceremonial pin, certificate and complimentary Federation of Small Businesses Connect Membership from the FSB, which jointly sponsored the event last week.

Brian Woods, its regional chairman, said: "It was a magnificent event in a truly magnificent venue, which was full to the girders with well-wishers, including too many West Sussex mayors to mention.

"I am proud that the federation can support our future workforce."

THe evening's host was the TV presenter and newsreader, John Young.

THe event was organised by the county council and the federation with support from district and borough councils and apprenticeship training providers in the area.

More apprenticeships are becoming available at the county council this year.

LIBRARY users in Bognor Regis were given the chance to find out more about a hospice.

Two representatives from St Wilfrid's Hospice took part in the town library's first session of a month-long series of special events during this month.

Jack Todd, one of the hospice's champion ambassadors, was joined by the ambassadors' co-ordinator, Mandy Shipley, for the event last Wednesday morning, pictured below.

Mr Todd said the two hours had enabled them to spread the word about the work of the hospice in Chichester and the chances which existed for people to help them.

"We've had quite a few people interested," he said. "We were at Willowhale Library in Rose Green on Monday and I would say we had 100 per cent contact with everyone who went there during that time."

Mr Todd has been a volunteer for the hospice for 12 years. "When I retired, I wanted to find something to serve the community. THe hospice has got such a good name it seemed a good place to come to.

"It's very rewarding and quite a privilege to talk to people about the hospice. I also take part in a lot of bucket collections for it in Chichester.

"THere are a large number of people who have had relations who have gone into the hospice or been cared for it by at home.

"THe hospice has 250 volunteers and there are another 250 in its shops. I think it's the volunteers who give the hospice its warmth."

Hospice communications officer Helen Humphry said: "We often find that people are aware of St Wilfrid's but have limited understanding of exactly what we do.

"In order to address this issue, we have developed an interesting and interactive 30-minute presentation that is delivered by a volunteer hospice ambassador."

Since the first ambassador was appointed, they have given the presentation to more than 1,300 people in 80-plus events.

THe libraries will be hosting plenty of events during the rest of this month among the 40 arranged.

THey are complemented by displays of mood-boosting books and a selection of self-help guides.

West Sussex County Council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, Cllr Debbie Kennard, said: "Our libraries are at the heart of our communities and are safe, friendly and welcoming places, bringing people together whatever their age."

HISTORY will be brought to life at a Slindon church next week.

Two historians will lead a history afternoon about the centuries-old life of St Mary's Church in the village.

Dr Andrew Foster, an ecclesiastical historian, will lead the session with Martin Jones, a specialist in Victorian church architecture and founding member of the Slindon History Society Phil Berry.

Dr Foster has written extensively about the clergy, cathedrals and cathedrals of the early modern period and most recently about Slindon.

THe event - called A Passion for Modernity: The Victorian Restoration of St Mary's & the work of TG Jackson - will take place in the church at 2pm on March 24.

THe Victorians changed the look of the English church, with the new ones they built, and the ancient churches they 'restored'.

In 1865/66, THomas Jackson was commissioned to restore and modernise a neglected medieval parish church in Slindon.

THat work transformed the church and is still important today.

Jackson went on to become a lauded Victorian architect whose work included buildings in Oxford.

THe afternoon will cover a significant era in the life of the parish church and the early work of an eminent Victorian.

A patronage of cricket and keeper of animals

by Lorna Still, Volunteer at The Novium Museum CHARLES LENNOX became the 2nd Duke of Richmond in May, 1723. He is perhaps best known for his patronage of cricket, although he had a great many other interests. He was influential in furthering knowledge of natural history as well as the prevention of smuggling.

He was born at Goodwood on May 18, 1701, the son of the 1st Duke of Richmond and grandson of Charles II. At the age of 12, he was injured when his horse threw him, but this did not dampen his enthusiasm for hunting and he became Master of the famous Charlton Hunt, later known as the Goodwood Hunt, when his son moved the kennels there.

He entered into an arranged marriage to Lady Sarah Cadogan when he was 18 and she was only 13, her dowry helping to pay his father’s debts. THey married at THe Hague in the Netherlands. THe marriage was surprisingly successful, Lady Sarah supporting him and

sharing his interests, such as the Foundling Hospital in London, of which Richmond was one of the founding Governors.

Richmond was related by marriage to Sir Hans Sloane, president of the Royal Society, of which the Duke became a member himself when he was only 22. He developed an interest in natural history, planting trees and shrubs at Goodwood which had only just been introduced in England. Richmond established a menagerie at Goodwood, which housed lions, tigers, bears, raccoons, a monkey and an armadillo, among others.

THey did not all thrive. Sick animals were treated by Sir Hans Sloane and the bodies of some of the animals who died were probably sent to him for dissection.

Near the house, in the High Wood, Richmond created the ‘Ruined Abbey’, sometimes known as the Rock Dell. A mock

gothic entrance formed the entry to a small series of tunnels ‘THe Catacombs’ beautifully lined in brick, which housed the animals. A stone monument over a favourite lion’s grave can be seen at Goodwood today. Richmond’s menagerie was in decline by 1748, however, his son, the 3rd Duke, did continue to keep moose.

Richmond captained his own cricket team, and one of his grooms, THomas Waymark, became a professional cricketer who ended up playing against his former employer when he moved to Berkshire. In 1727, Richmond played two games against Alan Brodrick’s XI and written Articles of Agreement were drawn up beforehand. THese are the earliest known written rules of cricket.

A controversial return match in 1731 against THomas Chambers’ Middlesex XI nearly caused a riot. THe game ended at the prearranged time but had started late because the Duke was delayed. THe crowd became angry, Sussex players ‘having the shirts torn off their backs.’ Richmond appears to have conceded the game to Chambers, to avoid litigation.

In 1733, Richmond broke his leg and could no longer play himself, so he became the patron of the cricket club at Slindon, which bordered on his Goodwood estate. It flourished under his patronage.

THe earliest surviving scorecard from June 2, 1744, records a match at the Artillery Ground between London. Slindon won by 55

runs. After Richmond’s death, Sussex cricket was less successful until the rise of Brighton Cricket Club in the 1790s.

THe Duke was a fervent anti-Jacobite and fought as Lieutenant-General in the campaign against the 1745 Jacobite uprising under George II’s son, the Duke of Cumberland. THis could be one of the reasons why Richmond led the campaign against smuggling in Sussex, as some smugglers acted as Jacobite spies and others allowed Jacobites to travel between England and France in their boats.

Richmond was instrumental in bringing to justice members of the Hawkhurst Gang who had been involved in the vicious murders of a customs officer and a witness in 1748. THe ringleaders were tried at the Guildhall in Chichester and hanged in 1749.

Later that year, a book on smuggling in Sussex appeared, written by an anonymous ‘gentleman of Chichester’. A letter written to the Duke makes it almost certain that Richmond was the author. THe aim of the work was to put an end to support for smugglers by the general public. It describes ‘THe Inhuman and Unparalleled Murders’ in vivid detail and the words are accompanied by equally lurid copperplate illustrations. THese can currently be seen in the Novium’s ‘Cutlasses and Contraband’ exhibition. THe Hawkhurst Gang had been effectively disabled and the smuggling problem was greatly reduced in Sussex. Richmond died soon after this, in 1750, and was buried in Chichester Cathedral.

Derby day win puts battling Blues PostSport in pole position for top four place CHICHESTER RFC will be eyeing up a strong finish to the season as they look to seal a top four spot.

A poor run and injury crisis around the turn of the year put paid to any hopes of the Blues sealing an immediate return to the national league. But recent weeks have seen Scott Ashley's side find their form, chalking up their third win in four with a nail-biting victory over Brighton at Oaklands Park last weekend.

Despite being a man down and in the face of an onslaught from the visitors, Chi held on for a memorable 26-23 bonus point win.

With just five games of the season to go, that victory over London One South's form side puts space between the fourth-placed Blues and the chasing pack.

Chi can all but seal their position with victory at seventh-place London Cornish in west London tomorrow (12.30pm).

THey head to Wandsworth in high spirits after victory over their Sussex rivals.

Chi kicked off playing down the slope and immediately had Brighton on the ropes.

Heavy pressure led to a five metre scrum, from which Chris Johnson offloaded to Martin O’Callaghan to score under the posts for 7-0.

Brighton hit back with a score of their own, but a yellow card for the visitors allowed Chi to extend their lead through Toby Golds.

But Blues went in at the break 15-12 down after conceding ten points in the final 90 seconds of the half.

Into the second period and a further yellow for Brighton allowed Chi to find their stride, Ben Robson scoring twice in two minutes to put them 26-15 up. Brighton hit back but, even after being reduced to 14 late on, Chi stood tall to seal the win. * Bognor RFC will be hoping to return to action for the first time in a month as they host Ventnor tomorrow (3pm).

A mixture of scheduling, rain and snow has meant the Purple and Greens have been fiddling their fingers in the last three weeks.

A return to Hampshire Avenue cannot come soon enough as Bognor sit second in the Hampshire One. With just four games of the season left, the Purple and Greens are 15 points behind United Services.

With the Portsmouth side unbeaten, top spot looks out of Bognor's reach. However, a comfortable victory tomorrow will put them in pole position to seal the runners-up spot.

DARTS: Hayley Gatford, pictured below right, is in seventh heaven after the Hunston Hare won the Benevolent Darts League Ladies knockout for the seventh time.

THe Hunston Hare defeated Rhonda West (Richmond Rebels) in two legs in the final at the Newtown Social Club.

Scoring was close in the opening leg but it was the experienced Gatford who took it, hitting double top.

THe second leg was also close, but an 81 & a ton from the Hare gave her the lead.

West hit back and with, both on a finish, Gatford hit the 20 needed to take the leg, the win, and her seventh Benevolent Ladies knockout champion title.

Taking place on the same night was the over 60s competition.

With the passing of league chairman and four-time champion, Roger Hackett on the Monday before the knockout, the league committee decided it was only right that this knockout was renamed in his honour.

SOFTBALL stars of the future are being invited to come along and try out the sport for free as part of a recruitment drive.

Chichester Falcons Softball Club will kick off their 2018 season with a Rookie Night on March 28.

Looking to repeat the success of last year’s event which brought an entire second squad to the club, the Falcons would like to bolster their numbers enough to form a league team in its own right.

Rookie Night is a free, informal taster session where guys and girls aged 16 and up are invited to try out the game after coaching and mentoring from Falcons club members.

THe players are introduced to hitting, throwing and catching followed by a friendly match. Some of the sessions will be run by members recruited at the same event last year.

THe session gets going at 6pm at Oaklands Park beside the Festival THeatre.

Manager David Morris said: "THe players

who attended Rookie Night last year and joined the Falcons have done incredibly well.

"THey jumped straight into a special tournament aimed at newer players, came away with the Plate trophy, and never looked back.

"THey formed a team for the Viper Series and played game days against Brighton, Guildford and Eastbourne, and a handful of them have already made their way into the Falcons league squad."

Meanwhile, the Falcons’ Oliver Howley has been back on international duty, pitching for the Great Britain under-19 men’s team in the Ayelet International Games in Israel.

Playing in extreme temperatures up to 31C, Oliver won both the Player’s Player Award and Coach’s Player Award during the event.

Alongside Oliver, his fellow Falcons, Bronte Harvey, 17, Amy Morris, ten, and Owen Randell, 16, continue to train monthly at the BSUK Softball Academy in London.

Part of the darts scene in Bognor Regis and the surrounding areas for more than 50 years, Roger, pictured below, became chairman of the Bognor Regis Old Folks Darts League back in the late 1990s to early 2000s. He was responsible for the league being renamed the Benevolent Darts League, then took on the role of

chairman again in 2014.

He passed away peacefully on Monday, March 5, after a year long fight with leukaemia. After the funeral, everyone will be meeting at the Newtown Social Club for drinks, food and maybe a few games of darts. Family flowers only, but donations can be given to Leukaemia UK, c/o Kevin Holland Funeral Service, Chichester Road, Bognor.

Crunch-time for Chi as City face two title rivals in a week

Chi race is big success again THE SECOND leg of the Chichester Corporate Challenge proved as popular as ever as hundreds of runners of all ages raced around the city under the night time lights.

Organised by Chichester Runners and Athletics Club, the event is designed to get people involved in a friendly race on familiar territory.

THousands of people lined the streets to cheer on the runners in the second leg of this popular race, which sees competitors head round a circular track, starting and finishing at the Assembly Rooms in North Street.

THe second leg saw 415 adults cross the finish line in the 4,500 metre race, led home by Chi Casuals runner Henry Leleu in 13 minutes 37 seconds.

He was closely followed by Edward Dodd (Russell Giles Partnership - 13:40) and Matt Gordon (Linn Systems - 13:46).

THe first female home was Rhiannan Dunlop of Portsmouth City who clocked 15:25 for 31st overall. Lucy THraves (16:19) and Charlotte Bowsher (16:25) took second and third place.

In the team event, Conrad's Lads made up of Ned Potter,

Ben Collins, Brodie Keates and Ollie Shergold were first home in a combined 59:46.

Russell Giles Partnership were top of corporates while in the female team competition West Sussex County Council (Amanda Godfrey, Rebecca Brown, Laura Carter) ranked first in a combined 1:07:00.

Before the adults, more than 400 youngsters of both primary and secondary ages took part in various races with Sam Tonks (North Mundham - primary boys), Hattie Bond (Herne - primary girls) Joe McClarnon (Ditcham Park Year 7/8 boys), James Gardhan (Bishop Luffa - Year 9/10 boys) and Holly Wilkinson (Brookfield - secondary girls) coming first.

THe event is now in its 27th year having been started in 1992 as a seniors’ only competition between local firms, sports clubs and other organisations. Juniors were added a few years later.

Both elements have developed over the years to such an extent that more than 800 took part in each of the first two legs. A similar number is expected for the final part of the challenge next Wednesday from 6pm.

CHICHESTER City are gearing up for a crunch week which could go a long way to deciding the SCFL Premier title race.

Competition in the county league has been fierce this season with seven teams in the hunt for the league crown.

With the top two sides also being guaranteed promotion to the Isthmian South for the first time, the stakes have never been higher.

With six weeks of the season left to run, Chi are right in the middle of it, sitting in sixth place, three points off second and seven points behind league leaders Horsham YMCA, albeit with two games in hand on most of their rivals.

Miles Rutherford's side have two crunch matches in the next four days which could well decide their fate. First up is a visit from seventh-place Eastbourne Town tomorrow (3pm), a side who have fallen off the pace in the past month after not winning in four.

THen, on Tuesday night under the lights, Chi travel to Gorings Mead to play league leaders Horsham YMCA (7.30pm). With City losing to bottom side Littlehampton Town when they last played three weeks ago, there will be plenty of incentive to return to winning ways.

Lions focus firmly on the title Ne

PAGHAM'S Sussex Senior Cup dream may be over - but the Lions are still roaring on in their pursuit of SCFL Premier glory.

Under the guidance of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds, the young charges beat higher division opponents on their way to the last four of the county cup.

Buoyed by a 1-0 victory over Lancing at the same ground on Saturday, Pagham went into the match with high hopes.

But the run was brought to an end on Tuesday when the Lions were defeated 6-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s at Culver

Road.

Losing to a side made of professionals, many of whom are youth internationals, has not dented too many hopes at Nyetimber Lane even if officials were secretly dreaming of an end of season run out at THe Amex Stadium in the final. It means full focus switches onto the SCFL Premier run-in. And, even with Pagham sitting seventh, Lions fans know their team still have an outside shot of lifting the league title at the end of April.

they may be five points off second with two matches in the bag. But with each of those sides above them still to play a handful of matches against each other, Pagham could yet ride through the middle to spring a surprise.

Form is certainly on their side, with Tuesday's defeat only their second on 22 matches. Next are two winnable fixtures on the road, with a trip to Eastbourne United tomorrow (3pm) followed by a visit to Crawley Down Gatwick on Tuesday (7.30pm).

In SCFL Division One, Selsey hope to play their first match in close to a month when they travel to Eastbourne Borough's Priory Lane to face second-place Langney Wanderers tomorrow (3pm).

THe Blues have lost four of their past five, a run which has seen them slip to eighth in the league.

But, with games in hand on the sides around them, Steve Bailey's side know that a decent return in the next six weeks could deliver a top-six finish.

THey have performed well against Langney this season, defeating them away in the Sussex Senior Cup first round earlier in the season.

In SCFL Division Two, promotion-chasing Sidlesham face league leaders Alfold at the Rec tomorrow (3pm) knowing that a win is a must if they are to seal a top two finish.

Rejuvenated Bosham welcome Rottingdean Village to Walton Lane (2pm).

Ladies out to down struggling Swindon CHICHESTER City Ladies will be looking for six points to seal their spot in the third tier of women's football for another year.

In the past week ,all the talk in the women's game has been around clubs applying for positions in the newly-renamed two top tiers of the English game.

Chi, who are competing at the third tier for the first time this season, were unsurprisingly not among those rumoured to have bid.

But their claim to remain at that level which will be renamed the National League - could be strengthened with six points in the next two weeks.

Chi, who are currently seventh in the FA Women's Premier League South, face struggling Swindon Town on Sunday (2pm)

at Oaklands Park before hosting Charlton Athletic the following week.

THey will be keen for a win after coming away from their trip to in-form West Ham United last weekend empty-handed following a 2-0 defeat.

Amber Stobbs grabbed a brace to seal the points for the Hammers to leave the Green and White army to reflect on their performance.

If there were positives to be taken from the match, they came in the form of a lively debut for Natasha Stephens and also the return of skipper Emma Alexandre who looked comfortable back in the side after an injury sustained in the FA Cup clash at the New Saints in January.

EAST THURROCK (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR return to action after three weeks' rest eager to pick up points as their fight for survival kicks off.

With just 11 games of the National South remaining, Jack Pearce's side are second bottom and ten points clear from safety.

Hopes of getting their great escape underway last weekend on the road at fourthbottom Concord Rangers were dashed as the match was postponed because of the poor condition of the pitch.

THat, combined with the snow the previous weekend, means the last time Bognor took to the pitch in earnest was the end of February.

But, providing the weather stays away, the Rocks will make up for that in the next four days - with a crucial home stand featuring matches against mid-table East THurrock and playoff chasing Welling in the next four days.

At this stage of the season both are six pointers - although when the manager spoke to the Post this week - he was happy just to get playing again.

Pearce said: "I think it will be great to get back to action. It is always nice to have a break but it has gone on a bit longer than we wanted.

"It was frustrating to say the least being on a coach for two-and-a-half hours only to get off [at Concord] and the game was called off.

"But we trained hard on Tuesday and we have 11 games to go to get as many points as we can."

THe Rocks' task was made harder as, while they endured a two-and-a-half hour trip back on the coach on Saturday, the sides above them in the fight for survival picked up points.

Hungerford, Chippenham and Eastbourne Borough all won, meaning the gap to safety for the Rocks is now ten points.

With two homes coming at home to East THurrock tomorrow (3pm) and the rearranged Welling match on Tuesday (7.45pm), the pressure is building for positive results.

Pearce, though, sees the good points.

He said: "It shows that every team in the league can beat everyone, the bottom sides regularly pick up points off those at the top which is good for us moving forward."

THe Rocks will be missing Calvin Davies (suspension) as well as long-term absentees Chad Field, James Crane, Corey Heath and Dan Beck through injury.

Stefan Ljubicic, the tall teen striker on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, could start. His return from suspension after being dismissed an hour into his debut against Truro City has been delayed because of the recent postponements.

With snow forecast tomorrow, Pearce said the club would make an early decision on the East THurrock match.

He said: "THe pitch is looking super, even though, if the forecast is correct, there could be more snow. Let's hope they are wrong."

Rocks raring to avenge defeat IT FEELS like a long time since the Rocks last faced East THurrock.

For those Bognor supporters with short memories, the return match at the Essex side near the mouth of the THames came back in August. THose were heady days for the Nye Camp faithful - as the Rocks were unbeaten in five matches on their return to the sixth tier of English football.

A 2-0 reverse at East THurrock was Bognor's first defeat of the season. It also started a poor run of form which Jack Pearce's side have never quite shaken off. How apt would it be then if the same side that triggered the slump could also spark the great escape?

After not playing in three weeks, Bognor's small squad will certainly be raring to go the get back on the pitch.

Pearce said: "We had a great session on Tuesday so we shall see. We have a great coach in Dabba and great support staff around the club.

"THe one thing that hasn't changed all year is the training, which has been superb.

THe lads' attitude is great and the feeling in the changing room is great. THey are the important qualities that any manager looks for."

WELL, there has been no football to talk about over the past two weeks thanks to the weather!

Bognor’s home game against St Albans was postponed by the Friday lunchtime because of the snow and then our away fixture to Concord Rangers was called off at 1.40pm by the referee after an eventual pitch inspection ruled that game off too.

We were almost there on the coach when David Robinson got the call to tell us the game was called off.

What didn’t happen was a promised pitch inspection at 11am. As we got onto the coach, word going around was that they had called the game on at about 9am.

After the news of the postponement, everyone was questioning it and apparently even the players and management of both teams wanted to play.

I think at certain times, common sense needs to prevail and if both teams are willing to play on such a pitch then let them get the game out of the way – especially at this stage of the season.

THe referee was looking at it from a safety perspective of course. But, as it was only a small area of the pitch, perhaps the referee could have advised the groundstaff to do more work on it to make it safer to play on?

So, in the end, it was decision time. Did we want to go and watch Dartford vs Poole Town or Tonbridge Angels vs Worthing?

We saw the Mackerels coach as we stopped at the services, and the Poole Town

coach was there as well – small world.

I voted for the Dartford game but in the end we were closer to the match at East THurrock United v Welling United. So 35 Bognor fans piled in at East THurrock to see Welling United win 1-0.

THe ‘other Rocks’ couldn’t believe their luck as we added to their gate. THere wasn’t much to talk about as most of the Bognor fans were keeping a close eye on other fixtures in the division.

Although, I would say the Wings were the better footballing side. I think the tannoy announcer did a good job recognising the Bognor fans in attendance, while pushing the trip to Nyewood Lane in their next game to take on 'a certain team that play in green and white'.

It turned out the Dartford game was just as poor, with Poole Town somehow getting a 1-0 away win as the third from bottom Dolphins beat the top of the table Darts. In fact most of the results went against us this past Saturday.

Typical.

So, tomorrow we are at home to East THurrock United. Physically, quite good but not the best passing team I have seen.

We lost at their place 2-0 earlier on in the season, but if we keep Sam Higgins out, I think we have a real shot of getting some points.

I hope the game is ON tomorrow as I am starting to get BRTFC withdrawal symptoms.
