steps and was informed that there would be no cost limit providing the benefits were strong enough.

As part of this work, highways consultant SYSTRA has been commissioned to look again at ways of improving the Chichester stretch of the road.

They have now produced a long list of suggestions based on feedback and work by the community and business groups

which form part of the Build a Better A27 group.

David Carter, from SYSTRA, said at the meeting last week they were not saying there was a cost threshold.

He said: "The cost of the scheme may well be quite high but if it delivers a lot then we want to consider it."

Members of the group argued, saying that at a previous meeting, MP Gillian Keegan had told them there would be no

more money than what was offered.

Group facilitator, Ash Pal, responded: "This group asked for no options off the table. SYSTRA have been very clear that you can justify more investment if your benefit cost ratio is higher and Gillian acknowledged that.

"Gillian did not say there was an absolute number that we cannot go over under any circumstances."

The new Social Prescribing project will be hosted by Chichester District Council in partnership with the two local community networks in Chichester.

These include GP practices in the north and south of the district, plus the local NHS, West Sussex County Council, housing associations and voluntary groups.

As reported in the Chichester Post in January, the scheme was backed the council's cabinet members.

GPs will identify and refer patients who frequently seek their help for essentially non-medical problems.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services, said: “In many cases, a patient will make an appointment with their GP for what appears to be on the surface a medical matter, but will actually require much more than the GP is able to deal with.

"A patient could be feeling isolated and lonely, not managing a chronic condition well or have problems due to debt, for example not sleeping.

"Many of these things will impact on a person’s physical and mental health and manifest themselves in medical symptoms.

“This project will employ community referrers who will spend time with patients, working with them to get to the root causes, and help them find long-term solutions. This project has the potential to make a difference to many

people’s lives across the district.”

WORKERS at a sports marketing agency in the Witterings have come up with a fun challenge to raise money for charity.

Brandwave have decided to support Sport Relief 2018 with their #Chi2Munich challenge.

Inspired by Sport Relief’s billion step challenge, Brandwave are contributing by attempting to travel the equivalent distance from their head office in Chichester to their offices in Munich, Germany, and back again.

The distance equates to 1,880 km, which works out at 2,467,190 steps.

They have a team of 21 who are attempting to reach this distance within the seven days of Sport Relief.

In line with Sport Relief’s Whatever Moves You campaign, Brandwave's team have been taking part in activities to reach the 1,880 km distance including running, cycling, swimming, skiing, paddle boarding, playing football, tennis, netball, and taking part in group fitness classes, before and after work and during lunch hours.

Down syndrome day dance celebrations Public to have a say over options From page one

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER Down Syndrome Support Group has put creativity and dance centre stage to help celebrate inclusivity for Wednesday's World Down Syndrome Day. The group, which supports over 60 local families with youngsters ranging in age from newborn to their late 20s, has been rehearsing for six months for the dance video which was released this week.

The support group takes pride in raising awareness of Down syndrome within the community and every week since September 25 children with Down Syndrome and their siblings have attended dance classes run by dance teacher Suzanne Hill.

Organiser Kath Lake said: “The starting point was a little shaky, but from small beginnings. Children have improved their co-ordination, strength and stamina, along with concentration and attention.

"They have loved the social aspects of the

class and the sense of achievement from performing routines with their friends.”

Local media company beechtobeach ltd, along with art director, Louisa Moxey, donated their time and expertise to capture the whole project on video.

The end result is a video of the children dancing to ‘Uptown Funk’, which was released on YouTube on March 21 to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. The group is hoping this will be shared widely to show everyone what amazing things children with Down syndrome can achieve with the right support and opportunities.

Isabelle Lack, who is 24 and has Down Syndrome, said: “I really enjoyed making the dance video. Being part of the dance group with Suzanne has inspired me and I'd like to be involved with more dance videos. I love it.”

Other supporters include J W Sports in Bognor, which supplied and printed T-shirts at cost price and fundraiser Natalie Hodges, who helped generate money for the cost of the dance classes and village

hall hire.

John Lewis, The Pagham Pram Race, Chichester Father Christmas (Trevor Ware), the Co-op and Business Network Bognor Regis provided much needs funds and grants to help support the project.

Dance teacher Suzanne said: “I have loved every minute teaching this fantastic group of young people to dance.

"They are enthusiastic and such great fun to be with. They continue to educate, amaze and impress me every week with their new skills.”

Parent Natalie Hodges said: “It gives them huge confidence and also helps with their speech and coordination.

Watching the video every time makes me smile and I feel so proud of what our children and young adults have achieved. There are no limits.”

The Novium roll the dice with a new exhibition - see page five

West Sussex County Council is now asking members of the public for their views to ascertain what the wider community think is the right thing for the city and the surrounding area.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “The A27 is absolutely crucial in keeping our county moving, keeping our economy buoyant and making the city a place where people want to live, work and visit.

"Any improvements to this route have to work for the city and the surrounding areas. We were so disappointed with the options presented by Highways England and the effect they had on the community.

"That’s why we, together with Chichester District Council and our MP, brought together those with an interest in the community to see if they could agree a solution that works for everyone.

"This is about listening to our community and giving Highways England the information they need to build the right road for us.”

The Build a Better A27 group was formed back in March, 2017, when Highways England announced it would not fund improvements for that part of the road because the community could not come to a consensus on the right solution for the road.

The long-list SYSTRA has come up with includes analysis of the routes previously put forward by Highways England, potential improvements to the current road and other routes.

At the meeting, Mr Pal said: "We are on time. We are doing what we said we would do and we are about half way through.

"These are high level ideas. We are taking a systematic step wise approach to this so that we get your input at every stage. We are not going to force choice. That’s what happened before and we know how that ended up."

The public’s views will be fed into the Build a Better A27 group. They have been tasked with getting more views from the communities they represent.

SYSTRA will then carry out some more detailed assessments of these proposals and will feed this back to the group in April before they produce their final report in May. This will then go through West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council’s decision-making processes to form a recommendation for Highways England.

That recommendation will be submitted back to Highways England for their consideration and a final decision over the future of the road will be made by them. A decision is expected in late summer.

` Buses takeover WEST SUSSEX County Council has arranged for bus routes 54 (Petersfield to Chichester) and 91, 92 and 93 (Petersfield to Midhurst) to be operated by Stagecoach South from Monday, April 16.

Bob Lanzer, cabinet member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “We understand the importance of these bus services for local residents, especially those living in small rural villages – to get to work, shopping, schools and colleges.

"Our decision to continue to support these services is the result of both a public consultation and liaising with stakeholders.

"We will continue to work with the local communities in reviewing the arrangements put in place over the coming months.”

There will be some minor changes to the 54 timetable, particularly the first and last journeys of the day, which will be reduced to run between South Harting and Chichester only.

Residents will still be able to travel in the morning by catching the 91 between Petersfield and South Harting and changing to the 54 for their onward journey.

Service 91, 92 and 93 timetable will continue to a largely unchanged timetable. This replaces the arrangement with the Emsworth and District Bus Company.

Disappointment for Billy's owner

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk THE DIRECTOR of Billy's on the Beach has hit back over planners' decision to refuse an extension.

As reported in last weeks' Chichester Post, the decision was made at last Wednesday's district council planning committee meeting because of safety concerns.

Director Christopher Fry said he had been left feeling disappointed over their refusal to grant permission.

He said: "We have spent the past few years trying to progress this project and were encouraged to make a planning application by Chichester District Council estates department.

"Following a five-month deferral, we are obviously disappointed by the councillors' refusal and some of their less than complimentary comments.

"It’s a great pity that the councillors chose to simply ignore their own professional planning department and all the professional evidence that was put before them."

The cafe, located in Bracklesham Bay, had sought permission to extend the existing building to form an outdoor, enclosed seating area to the front of the building.

The proposal involved the relocation of the foreshore access route 4m further down. A new pedestrian crossing would also have been built as part of the application.

Mr Fry said: "We are a small family business that has invested our own money into a neglected area. We employ local people - over 30 in the summer, use local suppliers, draw visitors to the area and are responsible for a fivefold increase the car park income. A pleasant by-product of our efforts has been the community atmosphere that has been created.

"Our aim with this application was simply to provide a level outside seating area with protection from the elements.

There would be a reduction in kerbs and uneven ground, with an easier access for the elderly and disabled.

"We would also be able to alter the kitchen and increase our storage. The opposition received from the East Wittering and Bracklesham Parish Council is astounding.

"We personally use the adjacent boat ramp and we will work with the amount of users in any way we can."

At the meeting last Wednesday, Brian Reeves, from East Wittering and Bracklesham Parish Council, said: "I feel that the whole proposal is going to reduce access for those with disabilities, not aid them in any way at all."

My Fry said: "With the hundreds of new homes being built locally it would appear it’s down to private enterprise to provide some infrastructure. Chichester District Council are currently conducting a review of the area but we believe the timetable for concluding this is some way off.

"We will be studying the council”s official wording before making any further decisions."

Crown-themed day to fundraise for much-loved community hub A FUN-FILLED day was celebrated on Saturday with people of all ages joining in the fundraiser for the Crown pub community hub.

The afternoon saw many families gathering at Muchos Nachos at the crown to make crown bunting, crowns and crown pencil tops as well as decorating crown biscuits.

In the evening, teams were challenged on their general knowledge with specialised questions on crowns, the royal family and Chichester stretching the participants.

Fundraisers very nearly reached their £1,020 target to pay for an independent valuation which is taking

place on March 22.

Sarah Sharp said: "The day was very rewarding. There was a real buzz in the pub. It was a cold, chilly day, but with the roaring fire and fun activities, the community really had a good time and we added to our funds, too. The day showed us what a community hub the pub can be. It can offer so much more to the wider community."

Further plans involve offering a repair and refill cafe and traditional lunches for elderly residents which it is hoped will be starting in the spring.

The launch of knit and natter took place on Wednesday and a new book club on Thursday.

Game on with new exhibition

The V&A Museum of Childhood's exhibition, Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered is free to visit and celebrates the joy, excitement and occasional frustration of playing board games.

The new exhibition replaces the popular Tim Peake; An Extraordinary Journey exhibition which closed on Saturday, February 17, and saw a huge rise in visitors to the Novium Museum.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, is a keen gamer and enjoys challenging her grandchildren.

She said: “After the Tim Peak exhibition it was a case of what do we have next? I think this is an important exhibition for Chichester. It's bright and it's colourful and it will appeal to all ages.

"I think that's what Tim Peake did really. It meant something, whether you were a young child with the wonder of space or whether you were older and maybe were in Chichester when Tim did his schooling here.

"What I'd like to see is families coming here and sitting at the tables and playing.

If they have lost that joy of board games to re-find or if they have never have it, to discover it."

Game Plan presents some of the most iconic, enthralling and visually-striking games from the V&A's outstanding national collection.

Alongside current family favourites

such as Cluedo, Trivial Pursuit, and traditional games such as chess, the exhibition looks at historical board games such as The Game of the Goose, as well as beautifully designed games from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The highly interactive exhibition features games from around the world, and also explores the important role of design.

Selected games are highlighted with a more detailed look at their history and influence.

An early design of Monopoly before it was commercially mass-produced will be one of the many fascinating exhibits on show.

Angie Bacon, from Chichester's Community Development Trust, is hoping the new exhibition will encourage more to join her group.

She said: "We started an intergenerational board games club. It brings together all the ages in the community.

"It's important for young people to learn to play games. It teaches them to wait, to take turns, sharing and engagement."

To mark the opening event, The Novium Museum hosted a fun family board games day on Saturday.

Families were encouraged to challenge each other to some well-known, family favourites as well as trying their hand at some lesser known games.

Visitors also had the opportunity to create a game of their very own and see their own original designs through to reality.

Museum manager Stephanie Thorndyke said: "Tim Peake will always be our local hero but for us it's really important that we are changing and we

are offering our public new and different experiences.

"This exhibition, which is really colourful and vibrant and interactive, will reach different levels.

"What is so unique about board games is that they are so multi-generational. It breaks down barriers and gets people to focus.

"We can strip back the clutter of life and focus. A board game gives you that time

to be together.

"As we chart the history of board games, there is something for everyone to learn through the exhibition. Everyone will come and have a memory or a story to share."

Game Plan opened at The Novium Museum on Saturday and will run until Sunday, July 1.

` New café and shop CHICHESTER District Council has awarded a grant of £15,000 to fund a new community shop and café, and a further £8,000 to build a new play area in Fittleworth.

These developments will provide the village with a community hub, meeting place and a safe place to play.

The shop will aim to provide a full range of groceries at affordable prices, local produce and crafts, postal services and a café, meaning residents will no longer have to travel to Petworth and Pulborough to buy their essential grocery items.

It is hoped that the new shop and café will reduce social isolation in the village and provide a platform for future community outreach services.

Golf open day at Goodwood

Golf At Goodwood, recently named England’s most welcoming golf club, is to host its annual Academy open day on Saturday, March 31.

Offering complimentary golf tuition to all, the day will cater for all levels of golfer, from youngsters who have never held a club, to more experienced players keen to see what the academy has to offer.

Throughout the afternoon, Goodwood’s friendly team of PGA professionals will provide one-hour group lessons for juniors of all abilities, aged from five to 16. During these sessions, the activities will mirror those provided at the Junior Golf Camps, such as Fruit Smash and Footgolf, as well as introducing the basics of the game.

The team will also run mixed Get Into Golf lessons, designed for complete beginners aged over 16. For those who play regularly and are keen to improve, 20 individual lessons will be provided, each 30 minutes in duration. There will also be a number of one-hour custom

fitting sessions, giving an opportunity to find the right clubs to suit individual styles of play.

On the range, all attendees can try their hand at a ‘nearest the flag competition,’ with some great prizes on offer. The little ones can have their faces painted and there will be an Easter egg competition, music and complimentary snacks and beverages all day.

Chris McDonnell, Golf At Goodwood academy manager and 2017 PGA Cup winner, said: “We are really looking forward to hosting another Academy open day. We have had over 100 people attending the previous two events and it’s always great to see new people – young and old – coming down to have a go.

"We have become increasingly wellknown for being a welcoming club and driving participation, particularly among juniors and women, through some innovative pathways into the sport. We hope that people come and experience these initiatives and realise that golf is really easy to get into.”

Film director set to do talk A GLOBAL blockbuster director is holding a special talk this month at the University of Chichester.

The director of the worldwide hit Game of Thrones will be speaking about his career on Monday, March 26.

Neil Marshall was responsible for the Emmy-nominated Blackwater and The Watchers on the Wall episodes from the medieval fantasy franchise. The filmmaker also wrote and directed cult movies Dog Soldiers and The Descent.

Dr Adam Locks, programme co-ordinator for film and television studies at Chichester, will be in conversation with Neil before hosting a question and answer session with the audience.

The talk is part of the university’s department of Creative and Digital Technologies presents series which invites stars of the big and small screens to discuss their work.

Dr Locks said: “We are thrilled to have Neil as our guest as he is working on some very big projects and it will be wonderful to hear his insights and stories from the entertainment industry.

“Since working in America, he has directed key episodes of Game of Thrones, Constantine, Hannibal, Westworld, and the eagerly-awaited Netflix series Lost in Space.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our students, as well as members of the community who are interested in TV and film, to gain a unique and personal insight into the industry.”

The talk, which starts at 5:45pm, is free for the public, staff and students, and will be held in the ShowRoom at the university’s Bishop Otter campus in Chichester.

` Box of Delights BUSINESSES from Chichester joined a range of companies from the rest of the county to explore ways of developing what they have to offer visitors.

Tinwood Estate Wines, Chichester Festival Theatre, Gatwick Airport and the South Downs National Park Authority were among those that attended the event, Box of Delights, at Ede's House in Chichester.

West Sussex County Council facilitated the event for a range of businesses to discuss ideas on how to encourage new and repeat visitors into the county, and for them to stay longer.

With so much available, from vineyards, historic homes, gardens and great food, West Sussex can certainly be described as a box of delights.

The leader of the county council, Louise Goldsmith, hosted the event to enable local businesses to highlight what they have to offer.

Cllr Goldsmith said: “West Sussex is such an amazing county with a wide and diverse range of places to visit and things to do. But it is a ‘best kept secret’ so we need to open up the West Sussex box of delights for visitors to come and try, and to help our businesses grow.

“The reception was a fantastic opportunity to explore how we can work collaboratively to grow the visitor economy.

Inspiring others with solo adventures in a new book

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk A SOLO traveller who kept her journal during her adventures has now published a book.

Vivien Fallows, from Midhurst, set off on her travels at the age of 52 with the request of her husband to keep a diary of her stories.

Travels with George is aptly named after Vivien's only companion was her suitcase, George.

In 2000, Vivien's son, Matt, went on an around a world adventure and shortly after, Vivien, who worked for a charity at the time, was made redundant.

"The whole thing was so emotional." said Vivien. "My husband said, 'Do something. Go and see what Matt is up to in Australia.' so I started to look at the map of the world and I thought this is an opportunity and my itinerary just sort of grew.

"People's reactions when I told them were not about me going on my own, but how could I leave Kevin, my husband.

The fact that he had spent ten years on his own before me, being self-sufficient, I was quite convinced he would be all right."

From visiting her son, spending 24 hours in Los Angeles and snorkelling in the Cook Islands, to adrenaline-pumping activities in New Zealand, Vivien pushed herself out of her comfort zone.

She said: "It was the most amazing experience. Obviously the only condition was that I kept the journal but it would never occur to me that it would then become a book.

Describing the idea of being alone, Vivien said: "When you are with a partner, you do things together, but suddenly there you are and having to make your own decisions.

"It never occurred to me at any stage that something might go wrong. I was also doing an Open University course so half my luggage was books. I was never going to study!"

"It's a bit of a warts and all story. It probably has been life-changing in a way. When I went to the Cook Islands there was this one lady who gave me raised eyebrows, but it sort of felt liberating, although I didn't know what I felt liberated from.

"I'd always done what I should have in life and then here I was doing something and someone was being disapproving and I thought it was wonderful.

"It's about self-discovery, doing things and gaining some confidence. Once upon a time I wouldn't have even talked about myself."

Vivien hopes her journey will inspire others to take the plunge and travel solo.

She said: “I really want to let people know that there are adventures to be had, even in these uncertain times. At whatever age, boundaries can be pushed.”

Vivien is interested in writing another

book: "Perhaps a book of poetry for young children.

"When my Australian grandchildren were little, I would shrink the miles which separated us by sending them

poems and I still enjoy writing them, but sadly they have outgrown granny’s rhymes."

PropertyNews ` Do landlords need letting agents?

THE SHORT answer is that landlords don’t need to use the services of a letting agent. Many landlords decide to be hands-on, which is the route I took when I started investing in buyto-let property ten years ago, as I was wary of entrusting others with what was ultimately my financial future.

I appreciate other landlords may share a similar viewpoint and I’m happy to point this type of person in the right direction, ensuring they approach the magnitude of letting a property in the right way. For example, I would strongly advise joining a landlord association, which goes a long way to providing you with the tools and documentation required to do the job, alongside keeping you updated on the latest legislation.

One major difficulty for today’s private landlord is finding the best tenants in the quickest time possible.

To help connect Chichester’s DIY landlords with tenants in today’s increasingly online world, I set-up a Facebook group called ‘Chichester Property To Let, For Sale or Wanted’.

It’s free for everyone to join and participate in (search for it on Facebook and click ‘join’), allowing landlords to post details and photos of their available properties and for tenants to post their requirements for property, in and around Chichester.

For many landlords though, property is seen as an investment rather than a second job. These landlords appreciate that a (competent) letting agent is better equipped to take on the process as they often don’t have the time, knowledge or inclination to do the work themselves.

For these people, who often lack the hours required to conduct viewings, undertake thorough tenant referencing and keep on top of the admin and maintenance issues that occur when managing a rental property, while staying up-to-date with the ever-changing legislation, they may want to use a letting agent.

Pupils from Rumboldswhyke Church of England Infants School in Chichester enjoyed a special trip to the Planetarium on Monday.

Teacher Lisa Terzian said: "The school have been on so many exciting school trips recently, including Beach school, Forest school and the Chichester Festival Theatre.

"Despite having to brave our way through the falling snow, the South Down's Planetarium proved to be an excellent educational experience for our Rumboldswhyke children.

"The day offered a super enhancement to the current topic they are studying; 'Up, Up and Away'.

"The staff at the Planetarium welcomed us warmly and were highly knowledgeable, answering the children's questions with enthusiasm.

"The Dome presentations were age appropriate and had been kindly adapted specifically for our study of Tim Peake.

"The event captured the children's awe

and wonder and provided them with a life-like experience of being in space!

"We would like to thank all the people involved in making Rumboldswhyke CE Infants' school trip to the Planetarium so successful."

Pupil, Phoenix, aged six said: "I liked the Planetarium a lot. In class we have been writing about the planets.

"When I am older I want to be a space girl because I like Tim Peake. Saturn is my favourite planet because it has rings

and lots of nice colours."

Isla, also aged six, said: "I got over my worst fear of the dark by going to the Planetarium. They gave me a torch to help. I really liked feeling like I was spinning around."

Raising thousands for hospice THOUSANDS of pounds have been raised by Covers Timber and Builders Merchants during their third ‘Help for Hospices Week’.

Over £8,000 was raised for St Wilfrid’s Hospice across all Covers’ depots.

At the Chichester depot, home ideas store and head office, fundraising activities included The Great Covers Bake off, judged by '50s and '60s era entertainer and St Wilfrid’s supporter Dawn Gracie; a bacon butty stall for trade customers; and the grand prize draw, conducted by local actor and celebrity Christopher Timothy.

Celebrating the fundraising achievement, Covers chairman Rupert Green presented St Wilfrid’s chief executive Alison Moorey with a cheque for £8,200 that will help the hospice deliver vital end of life care to the local

` ChiCycle fun ride CHICYCLE is organising a fun ride through the city centre streets - East Street and North Street, on Sunday, March 25 at 4.30pm.

The aim is to draw attention to the consultation to ban cycling on the city streets on Sundays to fit in with the same shop opening hours in the week (9.30am - 5.30pm).

Dementia hub to open soon

The hub will change the lives of over 5,000 people living with dementia in the Chichester, Bognor Regis, Arundel, Selsey, Witterings, Emsworth, Midhurst and Petworth areas.

THe Chichester Post were invited for an exclusive tour of the new building in Tangmere on Wednesday.

Previously the building was used a call centre for Virgin Vie cosmetics. The Dementia Support charity purchased the building and have been renovating it using funds raised by donations.

The Hub will be a bespoke, modern and functional centre where people will be supported to maintain their wellbeing, prevent isolation and access information and guidance.

Dementia Support is working in partnership with voluntary and charitable organisations, the NHS, West Sussex County Council and other statutory organisations, to create a lasting legacy for current and future generations of people living with dementia in West Sussex.

Servies on offer in the new hub include, dementia information and advice - a care wayfinding service so that each person visiting the hub can access good, up to date information, support and advice.

A Smart Zone will include a mock flat with innovative dementia technology and equipment to demonstrate to people what can be set up in the home to promote independence.

A community cafĂŠ will be open to

visitors and to the general public.

Social activities on offer will include both therapeutic and cognitively stimulating sessions. A range of drop in sessions will be available such as music and the arts; reminiscence and quizzes; light physical activity and interactive friendship groups all for people living with dementia There will also be a memory assessment service with emotional support at an individual level. This will potentially

reduce GP appointments as no previous diagnosis is required before attending.

CEO Sally Tabbner said: "We are hugely excited about officially opening our Dementia Support Hub. It has been the charity’s vision to have a building with all dementia services under one roof for the local community, and we are delighted to have achieved this.

"We look forward to welcoming people living with dementia, their families, carers, and the local community through

our doors."

The charity currently runs pilot sessions for people living with dementia, that provide a therapeutic benefit and help improve wellbeing: art workshops in partnership with University of Chichester, creative responses with the Chichester Festival Theatre, watercolour painting classes, singing for the soul, tea at Tangmere socialising events, and exercise and music sessions with Alive! activities.

Musical sees students help town theatre PERFORMING students have got into the fundraising habit with thousands of pounds for the theatre in Bognor Regis.

THe eight performers from the University of Chichester took to the stage at the Alexandra THeatre in the Regis Centre to help to buy new speakers for the auditorium.

THey put on a production of Nunsense the Megamusical for three days last month and succeeded in raising £4,070.21 towards the £20,000 target.

Donna Day Lafferty, leader of the university's charity and arts development degree programme, said those involved with the show wanted to express their enormous thanks to friends, family and residents who made up the audiences at the show and gave so generously to the collection.

She said: "We're always blown away by the warmth of local audiences and their passion for the Regis Centre.

"It's a really important place for our students and for local people. So it's a geniune honour to be able to support the Regis Centre in this way."

THe show is a musical comedy about the five of the 19 surviving Little Sisters of Hoboken former missionary order who discover their cook accidentally killed the other 52 residents of the convent.

THe university's students often stage shows at the seafront theatre in a link with its operator, the Arun Arts charity.

As well as buying the speakers, the Nunsense team also want to support the running costs of the groups benefiting from the subsidised use of the centre and improve the volunteer programme.

THe students on the charity and arts development programme also helped Arun Arts to promote its scheme to sponsor a seat.

THey designed leaflets that promoted the initiative for theatre lovers to be part of something special in their town.

A good number of the seats have been snapped up by delighted sponsors.

` Fire service plan

DEPRIVED areas of the Arun district have a higher fire risk than elsewhere in West Sussex, fire chiefs have told councillors.

THe draft version of the 20182022 integrated risk management plan presented to West Sussex county councillors on Tuesday says parts of the district had a lower life expectancy, higher health and disability deprivation and overall higher multiple deprivation than most other places in the county.

THe plan, jointly written by Gavin Watts, the operations director and chief fire officer, states: "Deprivation is clearly linked to higher risk of fires.

"Being a single parent, never in paid work, single adult and being deprived were the top factors associated with higher rates of fire in the home.

"West Sussex now has four small areas falling in the ten per cent in England - all within Arun district."

THe level of poverty - and matters such as the rate of alcohol abuse and smoking - are seen in the plan as community challenges.

THe final plan will drive the delivery of the county fire and rescue service and will enable councillors and the general public to hold it to account.

Talk helps Isabelle to build a future career BUDDING architect Isabelle Isitt was inspired by a careers talk by a former Felpham Community College pupil.

Year 7 student Isabelle attended the presentation by Dean Lancaster, a quantity surveyor with Galliford Try, about professional careers in the construction industry.

She said: "It was really interesting.

Galliford Try are building the new University of Chichester engineering and digital technology park just down the road near the school.

"So, it is a local project which I can see daily taking place. I want to be an architect when I leave school, so this was ideal for me."

THe presentation was among a host of activities the college staged in support of national careers week.

A programme of talks and workshops took place during the week. Students from all year groups were encouraged to attend.

As well as Galliford Try, speakers from a variety of businesses attended.

THey included publishing, journalism, housing, architecture and food retailing.

Most were former students.

A number of marine workshops were also held for selected students across Years 7 to 9.

Gill Woodman, the college's careers co-ordinator, said: "Students had to take the initiative this week with the talks and sign up themselves to what interested them.

"It was good to see such a cross-section of careers being discussed. We want to give students as much information and advice on life post-school as possible.

"We organise a number of trips for groups of students in different years throughout the school year from trips to universities, colleges, local businesses and multinational companies as well as a large number of career workshops run in school led by external companies and organisations.

"If there is an event or opportunity taking place which can encourage our students and give them career direction, we will always try and ensure the college is taking part."

As part of their course work, health and social care students from the college have been busy working with the community.

Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 have spent the past two months visiting various places to enable them to interact face-to-face with other people, develop their communication skills and show them how to build positive relationships.

THe Year 10s went to Downview Primary School in Felpham, the Year 11s visited Fordwater School in Chichester and the Year 12s spent time at St Anthony's School in Chichester and Holymead Care Home in Felpham.

THey supported younger children with their work and led activities with them and helped care home residents with

their daily activities and events.

Rachel Greenland, a teacher of health and social care at the college, said: "It is always really useful to get out of the classroom and for our students to interact with people other than their peer group.

"To see them putting what they are learning in the classroom into practice was great.

"THey thrived working with the younger students and supporting their individual needs.

"THeir portfolio of coursework will now contain some real experiences and it was great to hear how all the different age groups throughly enjoyed their trips."

Year 10 students Ellie Smith-Hardy and Abbie Miles went to Downview Primary School and worked with reception classes.

Ellie said: "We devised a piratethemed activity getting the students to look at floating bottles and what makes them float.

"THe children all seemed to enjoy the activity and were very enthusiastic."

Abbie added: "To do the project, we had to use what we have been learning about in class regarding safeguarding, anti-discriminatory practice and communication skills.

"We both went to Downview Primary School as students. So, it was good to go back. Lots of the teachers still recognised us."

Students' film wins award STUDENT film-makers at the University of Chichester have won an international award.

THeir horror-thriller Red River was chosen as best short film at the Eclipse International Film Festival.

THe judges chose the short, which is 11 minutes long, for its bold plotline of a concentration camp escapee's pursuit of a former Nazi soldier.

Writer and producer Tim Wickens, from the BA (Hons) in digital film production and screenwriting degree at the university, said the accolade was a reward for the dedication of the student team.

"We were surprised to win as we had a relatively small budget but it is gratifying to know that you can achieve anything with hard work," he said.

"THe film poses questions about choice and morality and the decisions of a survivor who mercilessly pursues the Nazi soldier who stole the last remaining photo of her daughter."

THe production also received a nomination at the festival in Pasadena in California for best actress.

It was a collaborative effort between as many as 35 students from the first, second and third years of the university's department of creative and digital technologies.

THe undergraduates funded it with nearly £8,000 raised through part-time summer jobs and contributions from online fundraising.

First assistant director Abigail Godfrey was one of

the students who worked with lecturers and industry professionals to plan the project from conception to production.

She said: "To have been nominated at the festival was flattering but to have picked up the award was enormously rewarding and makes all those days in the mud worthwhile."

From this September, as reported, new students in the department of creative and digital technologies will learn in the university's £35m facilities.

Based on the Bognor Regis campus, these will include a 300sq m TV production studio with special effects room and media operation centre.

Red River director Harry Jones said the existing facilities helped students put the finishing touches to the film.

"When we came together to make Red River, we wanted to make something far greater in scope and quality than had been seen in any other dissertation films made prior to us."

` Quizzical time QUIZ fans have a last chance this month to test their knowledge to support St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester.

THe final event of a month of the brain-testing exercises takes place next Wednesday at THe QEII in THe Steyne in Bognor Regis.

THis will follow a series of successful quizzes this month in the area's pubs.

Jerry Doyle, hospice head of fundraising and communications, said: "We want to say a massive thank-you to every local pub and the pub-goers who have got quizzing.

"THe quizzes held by THe Seal, Anchor, THe George Inn, Four Chestnuts, Kings Arms, Maypole Inn, Lion and QEII are expected to raise nearly £2,000 to help fund the vital local services we provide to help terminally ill people.# "In addition, the Berkeley Arms have raised money, too, in support of our Dream Building campaign."

THe success of the quizzes has prompted the hospice to compile a quiz pack.

SUSSEX POLICE have urged the public to help them tackle terrorism and save lives by reporting suspicious behaviour.

THey have said no message will be ignored and all the information, treated in strict confidence, will be assessed by experienced officers to find out if any action needs to be taken.

Chief Superintendent Neil Honnor, head of the Surrey and Sussex Operations Command, said people should be aware of the risk of terrorism.

Car firm's apprentices get visit from minister f The Vision Express van in Northgate car park, Chichester

A sight for sore eyes with tests ALMOST half the number of people who visited the Vision Express 'vision van' in Chichester last Wednesday admitted they had not had an eyesight test in over two years.

Vision Express launched its brandnew van amid new research showing the number of glaucoma cases in the UK is likely to top 1.28 million by 2050, which is an increase of 85 per cent.

Aside from the 40 per cent who had not had tests, 82 per cent were issued with new prescriptions and 23 per cent admitted they had not had an eye test in more than 10 years.

MINISTER for school standards Nick Gibb has met apprentices at the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars' factory in Goodwood.

Mr Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, talked to the luxury car makers' apprentices from leather, wood, paint, engineering and assembly roles to hear from them the knowledge and skills they have gained since they joined the scheme.

THe apprentices were joined by colleagues who have successfully completed the apprenticeship

programme and are progressing towards management roles in the company.

Mr Gibb learned how Rolls-Royce apprentices combine nationallyrecognised college courses with onthe-job training, working alongside the leading craftspeople and professionals who design and build the world's best selling super-luxury cars.

He said: "It was a pleasure to meet the Rolls-Royce apprentices.

"THeir commitment and developing expertise was very clear from the

I, TONYA tells the story of the figure skater Tonya Harding, and her role in the notorious hammer attack on her main rival, Nancy Kerrigan, in the run-up to the 1994 Winter Olympics.

St Ives comes to Chichester Max Wildman is a artist whose popular success revolves around an uncanny ability to create works in the style of Alfred Wallis - that most enigmatic of naive painters who lived and worked in St Ives in the first half of the 1900s. He will be exhibiting over 50 of his most recent works at the Oxmarket Gallery in Chichester, from 27th March to the 8th April.

Alfred Wallis is a legendary figure in St Ives artistic life - a fisherman and scrap dealer who took up painting in his seventies. Wallis is said to have amazed sophisticated modernists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood one day during a visit to St Ives. THey were walking near Porthmeor Beach when the pair happened upon Wallis working in his cottage, and were both immediately impressed by his untrained, uninhibited approach.

Wallis worked with whatever materials he could lay his hands on - mostly ordinary household or ships paint, as well as pencil and crayon. He used scraps of cardboard salvaged from the local grocer, which he cut into irregular shapes. Perspective was unimportant to this intuitive painter, who

made objects bigger or smaller depending on the importance he place upon them! His paintings were mainly seascapes or boats which he painted from memory - recalling the years he spend at sea.

Wallis's work eventually became much sought after, making tens of thousands per piece, but he himself died in the poorhouse before being able to reap any reward. Many of his paintings can now be see at Kettles Yard in Cambridge, which is where Max Wildman first encountered them. Having being fascinated by primitive and naive art for some time, he began experimenting using the same materials and techniques that Wallis would have used, and drawing on the same subjects - produces convincing, authentic looking works which are presented in a variety of vintage frames.

For more than a decade now, Wildman has been immersed in perfecting that elusive "Wallis look", and sells his work in many galleries across the country. His aim is to produce Wallis style paintings that look as realistic as possible - but at a tiny fraction of the price of an original. As fellow artist and sculptor John Maltby puts it - "Max Wildman is an artist who certainly knows his Wallis. His paintings are deceptively simple, and at their best they are often aphorisms of this unique St Ives artrist. Once again, Wallis is affordable!"

Easter exhibition at Tangmere Museum THE United States entered the First World War in April, 1917, and an agreement was signed between the British and American governments for the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force (ASAEF) to contribute 30 night bombardment squadrons to the Allied effort.

THese 30 squadrons were to be equipped with an initial order of 310 Handley Page 0/400 twin-engined bombers to be built under licence in the United States and then shipped to Britain for assembly and fitting out.

aerodromes in Sussex commenced during 1917 at Tangmere, Ford Junction, Rustington, Southbourne and Goring-onSea. By the spring of 1918, the work at Tangmere on constructing the ‘Training Depot’ was almost complete; three ‘aeroplane sheds’ and a Handley Page shed to house four of the large bombers had been constructed and the landing ground was ready for use.

However, it was not the Americans who were first to use to use the new aerodrome.

In March, 1918, three newly formed Royal Flying Corps squadrons (Nos 91, 92 and 93) arrived to work-up prior to moving to France and on April 1 these squadrons became part of the newly-formed Royal Air Force.

THe first fatalities at Tangmere occurred six days later on April 7 when three members of 92 Squadron, one of whom was American, were killed in a mid-air collision over the aerodrome when a Sopwith Pup and an Avro 504 collided.

In July, the three RAF squadrons left, the SE 5a scout equipped No 92 for France and the other two squadrons to be disbanded. THe aerodrome then prepared itself for new arrivals.

Between August and November, American aviators arrived at Tangmere and commenced their flying training on a variety of aircraft including British-built HP 0/400 bombers. To provide recreation for the new visitors, an American club was set up in one of the large houses in North Pallant, Chichester.

However, by the Armistice on November 11, none of the American built bombers had arrived and by the end of the year all the Americans had left for home.

THe story of the newly-opened Tangmere aerodrome in 1918 and the formation of the RAF is told in a temporary exhibition to be held at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum from March 30 until April 15.

In addition to explanation boards, models and a film showing the RAF aircraft types based at this famous airfield between 1918 and 1970, visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to sit in an accurate replica of an SE 5a First World War cockpit and to ‘fly’ this aircraft on one of the simulators.

Entry to the exhibition is included in the normal museum entrance fee.

Get a spring in your step with the benefits of fennel I KNOW it's been snowing, and it hardly feels like spring, but the daffodils are looking beautiful and the evenings are getting lighter.

As things warm up (fingers crossed) our diets tend to change as we get bored of the root vegetables we have been living off for the past few months. We naturally want ‘lighter’ and more ‘cleansing’ type foods.

It’s very easy to eat many types of fruit and vegetables all year round because of how much is available to us, but it is also good to be aware of what’s in season and try to buy local produce.

One of my favourite springtime vegetables is the lovely liquorice-like herb that can be used in so many ways such as teas, salads and soups.

I am talking about fennel, which is a spice used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It contains vitamin C, potassium, and fibre, among other nutrients, but what does it do for your health?

THis crunchy super food has been used in alternative medicine as an effective aid in treating a variety of ailments including aiding digestive troubles and monthly menstrual cycles, but it's got a whole host of other health-enhancing properties that you may not be aware of: 1. Protects against ageing Fennel is a natural aid for skin care. Fennel seeds, stalks, bulbs, and leaves are all packed with nutrition and are an excellent source of B vitamins.

THese vitamins, including vitamin C, are essential for maintaining good skin health and even promote collagen synthesis to keep the skin firm and tight.

2. Protects against cancers Fennel contains several nutrients that play a vital role in protecting you from cancer. THe herb contains an anti-inflammatory phytonutrient called anethole, which occurs naturally in fennel,

It is said to reduce intestinal spasms and increase motility of the small intestine. It alleviates gastric pain and discomfort associated with indigestion, abdominal bloating, nausea, belching, and flatulence.

4. Relieves menstrual cramps Stress and a poor diet can affect a woman’s regular menstrual cycle. Women often report menstrual cramps and in some cases dysmenorrhea, which is known as painful menstruation. Fennel can help relax the muscles in the body and contains nutrients that are anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, and antispasmodic, which can help reduce and alleviate these symptoms.

5. Reduces obesity THe consumption of fennel helps suppress appetite by creating a feeling of satiety. Fennel is a good source of dietary fibre. It boosts your metabolism while breaking down fats and reducing water retention, which are known to be the common cause of temporary weight gain.

6. Prevents osteoporosis THe fennel bulb contains several nutrients, including, iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and vitamin K, which contribute to building and maintaining strong bones.

THe seeds have a beneficial effect on loss of bone mineral density and bone mineral content in postmenopausal bone loss and osteoporosis.

Bargain buys are big on taste and small on price Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com ALDI remains king in terms of budget wines and thus I duly wended my way to my Aldi store in Chichester in search of such items. I initially commenced a perusal of white wines for under £5 and, remarkably, found a Vignobles Rousselet French Sauvignon Blanc for an outlay of just £4.49.

THis wine sported a citrussy nose along with zesty and zippy lemon, notes of lime and grapefruit and mouthwatering acidity. Vivacious and super summery, this wine is top value, especially compared to New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs!

A veritable price-buster, this dry, sharp wine is an ideal complement to fish pie or pasta and is a mere 11.5 per cent volume, if that be your concern!

For another 30 pence expended, the Chardonnay Pays D'Oc proved to be crispy with juicy white fruit, fresh and slightly creamy in texture, light and refreshing and truly worth a punt at this price!

For just £4.99, a Marlborough Makaraka

Sauvignon Blanc was a decidedly refreshing wine that perks up the taste buds with an abundance of fruit, lemon zest and subtle flavours of mango and pineapple and, at this price, exceeds all expectations!

At a price of £5.49, the Touraine

Sauvignon Blanc of 2016 vintage from the Exquisite Collection failed to disappoint, being clean on the palate and exuding green apples and grassy aromas - a good example with the right minerality!

In terms of red wines, I elected to procure two Australian shiraz wines of

contrasting style. THe 2016 Exquisite Collection South Australia Shiraz is eminently quaffable with ripe red and black fruits and a slightly jammy character.

It is beautifully soft with sweet spices in evidence and culminates in a long finish - an ideal accompaniment to a hearty beef casserole and on sale for £5.79!

THe second Shiraz was a 2016 Iron Horse Shiraz with a brand new yellow tractor on the label retailing for a lofty Aldi price of £6.99.

Fennel Soup

Method 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

INGREDIENTS • 4 ounces linguine pasta • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, sliced into thin strips • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning • 2 tablespoons butter • 1 green bell pepper, chopped • 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped • 4 fresh mushrooms, sliced • 1 green onion, minced • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil • 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Cajun Chicken Pasta

Method 1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add linguini pasta, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until al dente; drain.

2. Meanwhile, place chicken and Cajun seasoning in a bowl, and toss to coat.

Community News & Views A PERFORMANCE of much-loved piano trios will be the feature of the next meeting of Bognor Regis Music Club.

Local players Michael Sullivan, Graham Elliott and Colin Peters will be performing Mendelsohn's trio in D minor and Tchaikovsky's trio in A minor.

THe concert is at 7pm tomorrow at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road, Bognor Regis. Club chairman Chris Coote said: "We are looking forward to this concert of delightful and accessible music by experienced local performers.

"THere is never a dull moment in both of these works, which are full of delicious melodies and virtuosic passage work."

Freelance violinist and conductor Michael Sullivan (violin) has more than 30 years of experience with the Berkshire, West Sussex and Guernsey Music Services, both as a teacher and in music management.

He studied at Trinity Laban College and is leader of THe Finishing Touch String Quartet.

Cellist Dr Graham Elliott has done extensive session recording and orchestral work with the Royal Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras.

He is on the original Star Wars soundtrack. He has an active local teaching practice and is married to harpist Frances Kelly.

Dr Colin Peters, a gold medallist at the Trinity College of Music, made his performing debut in a weekly series of broadcast piano recitals over a period of two years when he was fulfilling his national service commitments in Egypt.

He studied with Vivian Langrish at the Royal Academy of Music, and has worked in higher education, contributed to and edited a number of books, as well as performing as solo pianist and accompanist to principals from Glyndebourne and Kent Opera companies.

Entry on the night is £9 members, £11 visitors and £5 students.

KEEN gardeners in the Post Newspapers area have been urged to share the joy of their plots this summer to help a hospice.

THey can sign up to take part in this summer's open gardens scheme run by St Wilfrid's Hospice.

THe event showcases bright and beautiful private gardens in the region for the general public to enjoy.

Bosses at the hospice will be opening its garden in Grosvenor Road, Chichester, on July 8 as usual. THey would like others to join them and help to raise funds for the continued work of the hospice. All anyone who takes part needs to do is to provide a warm welcome with a cup of tea and a cake or two for an admission fee of about £3.50.

Among those who have taken part in previous years are Chris and Heather Lock, who shared their delightful garden, pictured above, at Hillside Cottages in West Stoke, with the public.

Heather says: "It's great fun exchanging knowledge with others and a wonderful way to raise money for a worthwhile cause.

"Over the years, we've had some interesting conversations with people, some of whom have come back to us asking for our advice on plant care and so on.

"It can be very social and the tea and cake are an important part of the day, of course."

Gardens of any size and style are welcome to join the scheme.

THey can be small and beautifully formed outdoor spaces, traditional or modern in style, with a quirky layout or daring in design. A hospice spokeswoman said: "If you love it, then other people are bound to appreciate your garden, too. A good range of planting or something unusual or of special interest is enough to inspire other people."

EMPLOYEES in Arun District Council have won another award for the vital property work they provide.

THe council's local land charges service was recognised at the latest Land Data Local Land Charges Awards for the second year in a row. THe occasion saw Arun's team again named as best in the country for customer satisfaction for local authority searches.

THis is the fourth year in all the council's work in carrying out the land and property searches required for conveyancing transactions in England and Wales.

Cllr Jonathan Charles, Arun's cabinet member for residential services, said: "THis is a great achievement and we are delighted that the team that have secured this award for Arun District Council for the second time.

"To be recognised by your valued customers for the high level of service you offer is something to be proud of."

A NEW feature of this year's Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club's annual companion dog show has been announced.

Chairman Pauline Burtenshaw used the club's annual meeting to reveal the introduction of a fun agility and flyball ring.

THis will be a non-competitive addition to the show to allow dogs and handlers the chance to try out these two sports. Dogs must be more than 12 months to compete.

THe club will host the dog show on June 17 at the Bersted Jubilee Hall off Chalcraft Lane.

Mrs Burtenshaw also announced that THW Landscape Construction had agreed to continue as the show's main sponsor. Brick Kiln Garden and Pet Centre will once again be the ring sponsors.

As usual, all proceeds from the show will go a charity in the area. THis year's good cause will be the Lowlands Search Dogs (Sussex), who are based in Aldingbourne.

Mrs Burtenshaw opened the annual meeting last Friday and reported the club had enjoyed another successful year. Its classes had been well attended over a slow start.

All of the existing officers were re-elected and the club also welcomed two new committee members, Debra Saunders and Kim Brown.

It was reported the club's finances were in a healthy situation, with a small profit being shown.

THe report drew special attention to the superb efforts of club members in raising £1,500 mainly from last year's annual show, which was presented to the Sussex Animal Rescue charity at the Christmas party.

THe club runs training sessions every THursday and Friday evening at Felpham Memorial Village Hall. THe times vary between the classes.

THe latest sessions are now in progress. THe next term starts on April 19 and 20.

New members are always welcome, with the first training session free of charge, to allow newcomers to try it out.

Sir, A WAY of councils having extra yearly income is to bring back dog licences.

THere are some eight million-plus dogs in this country.

Let's say the licence fee is £25 and, so, just 2,040 dogs would produce an extra income of £51,000.

Dog owners without a licence could face a £150 fine.

THis might put people off taking on a dog and stop the problem of those who find who can't look after it and then just put the dog out on the street.

Some of the money from the licence could go to the RSPCA, say one per cent.

But the licence would have to be introduced nationally. I remain hopeful.

Discovering the roots of The Royal Oak pub

By Pat Saunders, volunteer at the Novium Museum THE Royal Oak at Hooksway, East Marden, is a 16th century building that has subsequently been modernised but retains a traditional pub-style atmosphere.

The pub is the only remaining building of a small village which existed on this site but was wiped out by the plague.

It is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a sheep rustler, believed to have been William ‘Shegger’ Shepherd, who operated on the South Downs until about 1680, when he was shot by a group of angry farmers after taking refuge at the Royal Oak. It was in the 1880s that the freehold of the pub was purchased by C.P. Henty of the Westgate Brewery Chichester.

In November, 1889, the licensee was William Woods and his wife Martha, who ran the alehouse. William had previously been gamekeeper at the Stansted estate until he was attacked, having disturbed a group of

poachers, an incident which put an end to that career and brought about the move to the Royal Oak. William and Martha remained at the pub until 1903. After this date, Alfred Ainger senior took over the running of the establishment until 1907 when he was replaced by his son Alfred ‘Alf’ Ainger junior.

Alf junior became a long-serving landlord, operating the venue from December 5, 1907, until his death on December 17, 1970.

At the age of 25, Alf married Caroline ‘Carrie’ Cribb, whom he had known since they were both young, having grown up together in Birdham.

While the Aingers ran the pub there was only one room available for drinkers. The beer was served through a hatch opposite the entrance.

There was no electricity; lighting consisted of candles and paraffin lamps. Alf had his own chair on the left side of the fireplace. Alf was a well-known local character and it is reposted

that when a local licencing magistrate asked him what toilet facilities the pub had, he replied ‘I got nine acres, Sir’.

Indeed, the pub did consist of a large acre holding which Alf used to grow vegetables, animal fodder, cut timber and to keep four milk cows. He would either cut wood on the estate or convey wood by pony and cart over to Lavant, West Ashling or Fishbourne. On occasion he ventured as far as West Wittering, an 11-hour round trip with a break on route at the Wellington in Broyle Road.

During the coal strike of 1926, wood was more profitable so Alf purchased, cut and distributed 25 acres of timber with just one man’s help. From the proceeds, he bought a Belsize car. Then, in 1930, he bought a Ford lorry from D. Rowe & Co for £220 which enabled him to carry loads further afield. Alf worked hard physically all his life and at 78 his doctor did intervene.

When the pub was quiet, Alf would sit back in his armchair in the bar and entertain customers with stories of his life. The pub had

various forms of entertainment including ‘Singsong’ night on a Saturday. If the mood took him, even Alf would join in the singing.

One well-known singer, Ted Ayling, would cycle to the pub from Trotten, a distance of around nine miles each way.

In 1957, the brewery Tamplin and Sons, which then owned the pub, presented Alf and Carrie with a mantle clock to mark their 50 years at the pub. He clock is now in the Novium Museum collection.

At the time of Alf’s death, he was believed to be the oldest serving landlord in England.

His funeral took place in Birdham church on December 22, 1970, and was attended by a large number of people. Carrie stayed on at the Royal Oak for a short time before moving to a relative. She was buried at Birdham on March 14, 1974, aged 90.

These days, the pub is described as an idyllic unspoilt country pub, with great country walks. Popular with hikers, horse riders and people with young families due to the large garden.

High jumper Izzie heads to the mountains as US journey ends CHICHESTER-BORN Isobel Brown has turned to running in the Rocky Mountains as she continues her pursuit of track and field success.

THe talented youngster made her name with a string of impressive performances at youth level for Chichester Athletics Club, culminating in winning the 2011 indoor national championships.

In a bid to further her education and improve her training, high jumper Izzie has spent the last three years competing across the Atlantic while completing a degree at Colorado State University (CSU).

THe highlight was a first place finish in the very competitive Mountain West indoor championships against colleges from across the west of the USA. THat was followed by a third place at the same event outdoors.

Her personal best of 1.78m indoors is ranked fourth all time in CSU history while 1.75m outdoors puts her fifth in the school's record books. But. with the usual heavy winter hitting the US midwest, Izzie has now been

forced away from her usual training schedule.

Instead, she has her eyes on completing a daunting long-distance challenge before returning home in the summer.

Mum Joanne Brown said: “Izzie has taken a break from track now that she has finished her degree.

"THere is no club system in the USA for track and field and, although some running clubs exist, it is nothing like the setup in the UK. "THis, we think, is an opportunity missed as there are facilities in every town, practically at every school and college, but not being used.

"However, Izzie has returned to running and been training all winter in snow and ice for the Horsetooth Half Marathon.

"It's set in the foothills of the Rockies and overlooks her home town of Fort Collins.

Horsetooth Rock is named because the ridges resemble the ridges of a horse’s tooth.

"Izzie’s training is going well, and she is aiming for sub two hours. It will depend on the weather and, like me, she prefers the cold, but there should still be snow on the ground in April."

YOUNG trampolinists are bouncing for joy after sealing regional success.

THe Bognor Regis-based Dragonflyers chalked up two champion gold medals and a further four runner-up spots as they took on the best the south had to offer at the Fleming Park leisure centre in Southampton last weekend.

By the end of the regional finals, five of the club's eight competitors had made it through to the national development finals as part of the southern team.

All of those taking part had to perform two ten-bounce routines.

THe aim was to secure a medal position and gain the national qualification score of 48. Securing both would see the young competitors seal a place in the national event.

In total, six Flyers smashed that benchmark score.

Rosie Budge led the way with a fantastic score of 53.25 in the NDP 5 (13/14 years) category which was enough to win her the gold medal.

THere was double delight in that competition as Flyers' teammate Libby Morton was just behind with 52.85 to take silver.

THere was further success as Izzy Hauxwell

(NDP 6 -15/16 years) and Lucy Hijmans (13/14 years) also sealed runner-up spots with scores of 51.6 and 48.6 respectively.

THe only male Flyer to compete, William Foden, repeated the silver trick in the NDP3 13/14 years category with a mark of 49.9.

All five made regional selection.

THere was a cruel twist in the NDP3 9/10 years event for Manon Bailey, who took gold with an excellent routine but missed out on selection by a mere 0.15 after registering a fantastic score of 47.85.

Fellow Flyer Lily Robinson finished a proud seventh in NDP3 13/14 yrs group, scoring a fraction short of 50.

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers are a tiny gym and club mark trampoline club with an excellent safety record who enjoy tremendous success at not only regional but national and international level.

"THe club is going from strength to strength.

We are now offering recreational sessions and anyone interested in trampoline lessons can see the full details on our website."

PostSport DARTS: Legends player Gary Blackwood won the Friday Benevolent Darts League secretaries knockout in style, firing a 127-out shot to win the trophy for the second year in a row.

Blackwood, who beat Simon Edwards (Richmond 'B') in the semi final, defeat Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker Club) in a nailbiting final.

Robinson took the first leg after the Legends player missed a finish of 90.

But Blackwood hit back, nailing double 16 to even things up.

THe last leg saw a close game with Robinson hitting a 140, helping him leave 48.

Blackwood was left with 127 and wasn't letting his opponent have another chance. So he stepped up, hitting a treble 20 and single 17 to leave the bullseye, which he hit, taking the out-shot, the win, and the Benevolent Secretaries title for the second year on the trot.

On the same night at Newtown Social Club was the captains' knockout, which saw 14 players take part out of a maximum of 20.

After some keen competition, Adam Judd (Aldingbourne Mavericks) and Colin Mace (Friary 'Z') made it through to the final.

Both players struggled in the first leg with Mace even having one dart bounce out of the board.

Judd struggled on his double, but had enough time, eventually hitting double 5 for the first leg.

THe second leg saw Mace find some form, hitting two 85s and a ton, but Judd was steady, hitting 81, three 60s on the trot, and a ton. Mace left himself 60, hoping for another shot, but it wasn't to be.

Judd had 110 left - he hit the treble 20 and a single 20, then hit double 15, taking the leg, the win, and the Benevolent Captains' title on his first attempt.

BOWLS: Boxgrove-based short mat bowls club Infinity celebrated an excellent weekend of bowling rounded off with winning the division one league championship.

THe good feeling started on Saturday with Jack Rollings winning the County Singles at Westergate.

THat was followed up on Sunday when, despite only having seven out of eight players, the team scored four points to seal the title.

THe team was formed only eight years ago and had to work their way up through the divisions.

THe personnel has changed during that time, with Chris Page being the only founder member.

Next Saturday, Infinity play at Westergate in the Knockout Cup, hoping to win it for a third time.

Chi still in the title race after first defeat of leaders in 2018

Chi want to end on high CHICHESTER RFC hope to finish the season on a high but they must overcome a host of Kentish men as they head into the last four matches of the campaign.

THe Blues have all but secured a fourth place finish in London Division One South after a 20-20 draw with London Cornish last week.

THose two points mean that Scott Ashley's side have lost just once in their past five matches.

But Chi's run-in is a tough one, with three games on the road to round off the season.

It starts tomorrow with a trip to the banks of the THames to face second-place Medway (2pm) who are yet to lose at home all year.

After losing their past two games which has seen them lose top spot, the north Kent side will be raring to go against a Blues side who are starting to show their true colours.

Chi showed their mettle on the road in west London when they fought valiantly in the snow to seal a draw against London Cornish.

Despite making eight changes to the side that beat

Brighton, Blues started brightly and opened the scoring with a penalty try, which also saw the hosts reduced to 14.

Cornish fought back, though, and scored two converted scores to go in at the break 14-7 up.

Chi came out after the break eager to cut the gap. After 19 phases, Sam Drayson picked up the ball and dived over to score.

Both sides swapped penalties before new boy Will Maxfield dived through a tiring Cornish defence to touch down and put Blues into a 20-17 lead.

THe home side rallied, though, and put through a late penalty to see both teams go home honours even. * Bognor can seal a second place finish in Hampshire One tomorrow when they travel to Alresford tomorrow (2.30pm).

THe Purple and Greens smashed Ventnor 76-0 in their last match and will be keen to repeat the bonus point victory north of the downs.

Winning the division is all but impossible as undefeated league leaders United Services are 15 points clear with three matches to play.

CHICHESTER City remain well in the race for the SCFL Premier title after inflicting a first league defeat for four months on leaders Horsham YMCA. Miles Rutherford's side scored two second half goals - the first YM have conceded for two months - to take three crucial points from the match under the lights on Tuesday.

Combined with a point from a 0-0 draw with fellow promotion chasers Eastbourne Town on Saturday, Chi now sit fourth in the league, six points behind YM with a game in hand.

After two matches against title rivals, Chi have a slight respite in the coming week, facing 13th place AFC Uckfield tomorrow (3pm) before a home match against midtable Loxwood on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Chi will be full of confidence, though, as second half strikes from Kaleem Haitham and Lorenzo Dolcetti sealed the victory against Horsham YMCA. THis was YM’s first league reverse since November 25, ending a run of eight consecutive wins.

THe opposing manager, Peter Buckland, was full of praise for Chi, adding: "We were beaten by the better side on the night.�

CHICHESTER City Ladies have taken a big step to the next level - by appointing Alan Crozier as the new general manager of the club.

With the FA in the middle of a shake-up at the top level of the women's game, the Oaklands Park side are making preparations behind the scenes to ensure Chi can reach their potential.

Since joining the FA Women's Premier League side in January as business manager, Crozier has helped move the club towards a more professional footing.

But, with the FA introducing new criteria for clubs looking to become part of the newly renamed top two tiers of the game, he has now been promoted to general manager.

Crozier said: "For the club, it's another step forward to the Women's Championship (previously WSL2).

"Right now, we will prepare for the next season so that as a club we can hit the ground running both on and off the pitch."

In his new role, he will take on more of the operational duties at the club.

Last weekend's 4-1 defeat to second-place Langley Wanderers leaves Steve Bailey's side eighth with ten matches still to play this term.

In SCFL Division Two, the cold snap continues to halt Sidlesham's promotion charge.

Daren Pearce's side have now not played for a month and are sixth.

Tomorrow sees them head to Littlehampton's Sportsfield to play secondbottom Clymping (2pm).

Bosham, who have a weekend off, are now above the Sids in fourth after a 5-0 win over Rottingdean Village. Callum Coker (3), Matthew Docherty and Alex Barnes scored the goals.

PAGHAM'S promotion push rolls on - and the Lions will be relying on home comforts as they remain in the hunt for a top-two finish.

Two wins in the past week have furthered Pagham's chances, ensuring that, with nine matches of the season to go, they are six points behind league leaders Horsham YMCA with a game in hand. THe Lions are not the only ones sniffing out potential success - with only nine points separating the top seven sides, meaning the run-in will be a fight to the end.

Pagham have two crucial advantages in the battle royale to come. As well as having the best goal difference in the division, six of their

remaining matches are at Nyetimber Lane.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says he takes full responsibility as the Rocks look all but set to drop out of National South.

Two home defeats in the last week sees the Nyewood Lane side 13 points adrift from safety with just nine matches of the campaign to go.

Pearce has admitted that it now looked likely his side would return to the Isthmian Premier after just one season back in step two.

And while making no announcement on whether he would remain in the dugout next year, he said there would be a full review of all the club's playing activities to ensure Bognor had the best chance possible of returning to National South next year.

Speaking after the 3-1 defeat to Welling United on Tuesday evening, the veteran manager said: "I take full responsibility for the position we are in."

He added: "We have come up short in a number of games not by a long way but by small margins and unfortunately what it does tell us is that the balance of the squad is not good enough at this level to get wins."

After an upturn in performances in recent weeks, Rocks fans were full of hope ahead of the two games.

First up was East THurrock United on Saturday. But, even when faced with an Essex side who have struggled for form in recent weeks, Bognor went behind to an early goal.

Rocks then dominated much of the rest

of the match but could not find the back of the net. With time ticking down, the visitors were awarded a debatable penalty which was converted.

It was much the same story on Tuesday when playoff-chasing Welling took their chances.

Again, Pearce's side fell behind to an early goal, which Adam Coombes slotted home after Bognor gave the ball away cheaply.

Rocks pushed forward for an equaliser but Welling grabbed the inevitable second before the break.

One simple diagonal ball put Jamie Philpott through and he converted to all but seal the win for the visitors.

Welling added a third on the hour mark when Rocks keeper Dan Lincoln failed to claim a cross and Coombes poked home.

A number of Bognor supporters then started to leave the ground, missing a late Ibra Sekajja consolation. It was scant reward for their hard work and endeavour which ultimately lacked the quality and killer touch needed to win points at this level.

Rocks return to action tomorrow, making the long trip to Somerset to face mid-table Weston-Super-Mare (3pm).

THey will be without long-term absentees Corey Heath, Dan Beck, James Crane and Chad Field, while Icelandic youth international Stefan Ljubicic may be unavailable because of international duty.

Club's future will not be risked INJURIES? Suspensions? A lack of signings? A tight budget? A lack of passion?

Standing on the Nye Camp terraces this week, there were lots of reasons being thrown around for why the Rocks are in the position they are. THe week started full of hope as Bognor fans knew there were two matches at home which were genuinely winnable.

But, as has been the norm this term, possession was not converted into chances and chances were not turned into goals.

When the final whistle came on Tuesday, Bognor had suffered two defeats which leaves them all but certain of relegation from National South.

Manager Jack Pearce was blunt about the position faced by the club when the Post spoke to him at length this week.

His interview, printed in full on the right, certainly makes for interesting reading.

THe Post asked him repeatedly about his position in the dugout and a full review will follow this summer.

But what is clear is that the man who has spent most of his adult life nurturing the fortunes of Bognor Regis Football Club will advising against any knee-jerk reactions which will risk the club's long-term future.

THE ROCKS' two defeats in the last week have left them on the verge of the drop.

With relegation on the cards, the Post spoke at length to manager Jack Pearce about where the club goes from here: "If you went to the bookmaker, then it's clear that we would be one of the favourites to be relegated.

"And by their nature, the bookies are normally pretty accurate, that's why they are still in business and most punters are left out of pocket.

"We have to accept that we are struggling and, while it's still not mathematically impossible, we are making it more difficult by the day.

"We have to be realistic and most probably 13 points in nine games will be too much.

"But the most important thing is that the players give maximum effort for the supporters that pay to turn up and pay good money to watch.

"We all have personal pride at stake so it's important that the team keep on playing for our fantastic fans.

"To be in this position, the mood in the dressing room is obviously one of major disappointment as the more games you lose, the more likely it is that we will not be playing at this level next year.

"Our main aim at the start of the season was to stay at this level for next year and beyond.

"I take full responsibility for the position we are in. I do accept it and I don't want to hide behind anyone.

"But you have to realise that we are where we are and all season we have seen that in this division there's not a great deal of difference between all the 22 clubs in the league.

"We have come up short in a number of games not by a long way but by small margins and, unfortunately, what it does tell us is that the balance of the squad is not good enough at this level to get wins.

"It's my responsibility to address that but I've found it impossible to get the players in who will improve that while also fitting in with our wage structure and the location we are in where players are able to regularly attend training.

"I've picked up one or two criticisms from people but noone has actually named anyone who could improve our squad. I believe people have been saying the team lacks passion and desire. But I would say to them analyse what you are saying and then analyse the facts.

"Look at Tuesday - we're low on confidence and the opposition have more experienced, higher

paid players. By the end, we were 3-0 down to individual errors, errors which are unexplainable in some cases as they were committed by good players. Yet we are still enjoying more possession than them.

"What it has ultimately come down to is the two most important areas - which are scoring goals and not letting any in.

"THe highest percentage of goals are scored when the ball is in the opposition area.

"But we have not been able to get the final ball right and, when we have, the finish has not been good enough.

"Other teams have those abilities so that when we make a mistake they tend to convert.

"THat's what it always will be at step two with Bognor Football Club unless we are very lucky with injuries and suspensions.

"Looking to the future, unfortunately, our area is not blessed with many footballers but there's not many proven managers at this level.

"We will as a club look at how we can improve the structure of the team and everything to do with it will be closely monitored.

"If we do go down, then the biggest thing we want to do is to come straight back up.

"Where we are unusual to other clubs who have been relegated from step two is that the majority of clubs have been totally financially skint and owing loads of money.

THis means they have been in a dreadful state and, as a result, struggled to compete the following year.

"We are not in a desperate financial position.

"We will continue to refuse to pay players above the odds; we will be realistic but will be able to compete next year.

"First, though, we have Weston on Saturday, which I'm looking forward to.

"Football is about testing yourself, It's about working hard and all the time we have been here we have always been the underdog.

"All these experts out there may think differently but managing Bognor at step two is a major, major challenge.

"It throws up all sorts of problems. But be assured, if we go down, I haven't left the cupboard bare."
