BT to tidy eyesore site BT HAS been forced to act after criticism of its eyesore site in Bognor Regis. THe telecom giant's officers have agreed to improve the appearance of their telephone exchange at one of the town centre's main road entrances after the Bognor Regis Post passed on the complaints of Bognor town councillor Jeanette Warr. She said the state of the building's overgrown grassed surroundings on Gloucester Road was a disgrace and let the town down. THe site has become

covered with weeds, thistles, grasses and wild flowers up to four foot high. "THis site is just an eyesore," said Cllr Warr, a former town mayor. "It's just not suitable for our town and it is not an area of which we can be proud of at all. THis is not the image we want to give people when they arrive here, to go along our seafront. "THis is the worst I have ever seen it. It's so bad that people think it's a derelict building. "It's sad it's been allowed to get into

this state. THis is a building which is being used by BT and yet they are not worrying about its appearance. "It has got to be the worse looking site in the town centre and I can't understand their attitude. THey ought to be shamed into improving it." THe condition of the BT plot this week was in direct contrast to the work which Arun District Council has done on the opposite side of Gloucester Road with the same gardens and the grassed verge. THe neighbouring Gloucester House

building owned by the government also has its grounds maintained regularly. Butlin's also keeps the area around the entrance to its nearby holiday resort in pristine condition, she said. But BT has failed to even cut the grass on its site this year until contacted by the Bognor Regis Post. THis has allowed the land to become an unsightly mess with out of control growth of various heights. Turn to page 4

Wreathes Wreathes will will honour honour town town war war heroes heroes TWO ceremonies in Bognor Regis will mark the centenary of THe Day Sussex Died. THe wreath-laying events will take place at the end of this month to pay respects to the soldiers from the town who died in the Battle for Boar's Head. THeir number has traditionally been stated as eleven but this could rise as new research takes place. THe first service will be held at 11am on June 30 at the Roll of Honour in the War Memorial Hospital. Attendance will be limited because the hospital will be busy. THe public ceremony will be at 1.30pm at the war memorial at Bognor's town hall. THey have been arranged by the town council to ensure the men who died in the carnage that day are remembered. THe Bognor men were among the horrendous death toll of 17 officers and 349 men from the Royal Sussex Regiment killed in just five hours. Another 1,100 were wounded or missing. Town council officer Sheila Green said the Battle of Boar's Head was a holding attack and a diversionary action to make the German High Command believe it was a big push and to stop enemy troops moving south towards the Somme where the main offensive was to take place. "As the battalions started across no man's land, a smoke cloud intended to mask the British advance drifted across the front and made it impossible for the men to see, resulting in all sense of direction being lost and devolving the attack into small bodies of men unsure

STAY sober and serious, councillors have been told when using social media. THe advice was given to Arun District Council members as they backed a new guide to the use of accounts on websites like Twitter and Twitter. Cllr Paul Dendle, Arun's cabinet member for leisure and amenities, said problems with posts usually occurred when people had drunk too much wine or tried to be funny. "You can't make a joke. You need to be serious," he said. But he said he was in favour of councillors being active members of

social media. "It democratises politics. Most of the problem with social media is with people who have had a glass of wine and decide to hit the keyboard," he said. Council leader Cllr Gillian Brown said: "People have to realise, once their message is out there it's difficult to retract it." Cabinet member for environmental services Cllr Terry Chapman said: "A lot of people choose to engage with us in this way." But Cllr Ricky Bower, the cabinet member for planning, said: "THe best guidance is not to do it."

` Special services A FREE book about the Queen is being given away to congregations at a Bognor Regis church this Sunday. St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street will hand the publication to everyone who attends its community thanksgiving services to mark the monarch's 90th birthday. THe Rev Tim Crook, the church's vicar, said: “Her Majesty has led an extraordinary life of service, which we at South Bersted believe is something worth celebrating and thanking God for.” Special services to honour the sovereign and supreme governor of the Church of England will be held. At 9am there will be a traditional service with robed choir, music and anthems led by the organ. THis will be followed by a contemporary service at 10.30am with lively modern music and informal in style and suitable for all the family of any age. THe book has been donated by members of the church fellowship. It is called ‘THe Servant Queen and the King she serves’ and pays tribute to Her Majesty’s Christian faith and contains beautiful photographs.

She said: "At first, I thought it was quite scary but it seems normal now. I don't imagine the audiences are there, I love performing so much." Andrea won her scholarship after she had been a pupil at South Bersted's Art of Dance and Fitness since she was three years old. Her dedication paid off with one of just two scholarships awarded by Sylvia Young last year. Weeks at the theatre school involve academic studies and performing arts

studies. On the road, she has school lessons from a tutor every morning as well as afternoons without matinees. "It's tiring but I'm taken care of so well that it doesn't seem like hard work," said Andrea. "It's so satisfying waking up knowing I am going on stage every day. It's so much fun to go on stage, go back to school and go on stage again." Starring alongside Andrea are Annette McLaughlin and Martin Walsh in the tour until December. Art of Dance and Fitness joint principal, Lisa Richards said: "We are so proud of Andrea. What is nice about her is that she is so down-to-earth. "She is living the dream and it's quite fantastic for her."

Unique glasses work their magic to help the blind read f Stella Black with Brian Medlock

'MAGIC' glasses to enable blind people to read were among the topics at the first meeting of Bognor Regis group for those with sight problems. THe eyewear has a small camera attached to the corner of a lens which is connected to an earpiece. It scans a document and reads it out in a whisper to the individual. THe hi-tech aid could be among the equipment shown to members of the town's new Macular Support Group. THis

has been set up by the national charity, the Macular Society, with the help of 4Sight, the county charity for blind and partially sighted people. Last week's inaugural session was attended by an encouraging turnout of eight people at 4Sight's offices in Victoria Drive. One of those who took the chance to get to know more about the macular degeneration eye condition and the help which is available to lessen its impact was Eastergate resident Brian Medlock.

Mr Medlock, 78, said: "THis will give me the opportunity to meet other people with the same condition. It's a two way process. "I can give information to people which they might not know and receive information from them as well. "It's also going to be interesting to hear about the treatments which are being researched. It's good to know about the reseach such as stem cells but I think it will be too far into the future to have any benefit for me."

QUEENSWAY CAR WASH

Mr Medlock has suffered from wet agerelated macular degeneration since 2012. "I'm lucky because it has not affected me too much," he said. "Over time, my left eye has taken over and I can do things without too much difficulty, like reading and watching television. "But I am afraid the macular degeneration will develop in that eye and become more of a problem." THe group is set to meet on THursdays every three months at 4Sight. Its first session was led by Stella Black, the Macular Society's regional manager for London and South East. She said: "It's a good turnout for a new group. It's all about spreading the word. "THe whole thing is about helping people and giving them the support they need. THe worst thing is for people to leave hospital in a state without being aware of what services are out there to help them. "Our helpline is the most valuable thing for them to have so they can talk to someone about their condition." As well as talking about the society, she spoke about the low vision aids which are available. THe latest equipment includes the glasses with a camera. "THese can be useful for reading menus, the post or newspapers," she said. "THere is all types of equipment out there." THe self-help group is one of many around the country, including one in Chichester. THe macular is a tiny area of the retina at the back of a person's eye essential for central vision and for seeing details.

` From page 1 "THis area is so out of keeping with what we are trying to achieve in our town," said Cllr Warr (LD, Hotham). "BT is not helping the town in any way with this attitude. "THe town council has offered to help to improve the situation but BT have never wanted to know. "What the site needs is a regular maintenance programme to stop this situation happening again. "It's a shocking situation to happen for a company which makes billions of pounds a year." Cllr Warr also said the overgrown grounds made a mockery of the hard work of the Bognor in Bloom volunteers. "THey have made a big effort and work with the town council but they cannot do anything with this site," she said. BT has painted the square grey concrete exchange in the past two years after complaints about the appearance of the building. A BT spokesman told the Post on Tuesday: "THank you for bringing this to our attention. "An Openreach ground maintenance crew will be on site shortly to make good the grounds around the telephone exchange in Gloucester Road. "THe work is scheduled to be complete by Monday, June 13." BT has traditionally maintained it has no plans to allow other groups to use the site. THe area dates from the 1960s. A few years ago, Arun District Council earmarked the land around the exchange as a possible car park for people who were heading for the seafront.

Play Rangers serve up outdoors fun for Aldwick funsters PLENTY of fun was on offer when the Play Rangers returned to Aldwick. THe fifth year of the funsters' visits to the area saw bumper turnouts of children intent on enjoying themselves whatever the weather. Last THursday's session at West Park saw some 60 children enjoy the range of equipment in spite of the cloudy and windy conditions. One of them was Finley Joseph, six, who was playing hockey with his mum, Tina Joseph, of Felpham. She said: "We didn't know the Play Rangers were here. We just came here because it's fine but it's fun. We will be back again in the summer." THe earlier session on Tuesday saw about 60 children ignoring the rain to have a good time. Sessions were also held at Avisford Park Recreation Ground in Rose Green. THey are funded by Aldwick Parish Council and will return in the school summer holiday.

roundabout by the entrance so there's better flow," said Cllr Jones. "THe company has also created 20plus car parking spaces into the resort by moving the team further back. "Butlin's have stopped checking documents at the entrance gate to the resort and have asked customers to have their documents ready prior to arrival. "Mr Pardey also clarified he wasn't able to dictate set arrival time slot to customers – but has changed the check-in time to earlier in the day which is working well, reiterating that once the longer-term solutions were in place, it would help the whole situation and the vehicle recognition work would be in place before the university campus expansion in Bognor." Parish councillors in Felpham stated their concern earlier this year about the continued number and length of queues of tourists waiting to get into Butlin's which cause problems for residents in the area. THe problem has continued in spite of the opening of the second section of the northern relief road three months ago. Cllr Jones said Mr Pardey was fully aware of the problems. "Since the implementation of the relief road, customers now arrive quicker to Butlin's, but instead of customers backing up on the bridge they are now coming from the north," he said. Mr Pardey also used the meeting with Cllr Jones to outline the holiday breaks system at Butlin's in Bognor which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. THere were 19 adult breaks annually. Eight in ten of those customers arrived between 6.30-9pm and caused few traffic problems. Peak breaks from Fridays to Mondays see traffic start to build up at 6.30pm on Fridays and moves into 4pm on Mondays which begins the traffic problems.

A fancy dress competition was judged by the town's mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon. He said the event filled a gap in the town's provision of things to do in school holidays. "Whatever is put on for families in Hotham Park, West Park or the Place St Maur, has to be good for thet town. "In half-term, people just do not have the money to spend. THis kind of event is really good value for money and I think the money the town council has spent on it is well spent." THis year is the centenary of Roald Dahl's birth.

Another resident, Harvey Monaghan, told Arun: "THe current use of the premises is out of character with the present density of occupation per dwelling in the street. "Eight living units are far too many for a house of this size where most properties are occupied by single families. "Already examples of antisocial behaviour have taken place bringing unwelcome noise and disturbance to immediate neighbours and police involvement." Bognor Regis Town Council has also protested about the plan. Its clerk, Glenna Frost, said members believed it was out of keeping with the surrounding residential area. "Approval of this application will be detrimental to the area which already has issues with anti-social behaviour and parking. In addition, the property is not fit for purpose as there are insufficient facilities," they decided. A total of 19 letters of objection to the plans had been received by the district council at the start of this week. But the applicant, Julie Gosbee, has said her scheme would not damage the road. Her planning agent, Leeza AldisHobbs, said in a statement to Arun: "THe proposed change of use from single dwelling to HMO will have minimal impact. "THe proposal complies with the relevant development plan policies in that it would have no materially adverse effect on the visual amenities of the locality nor would it have an adverse impact upon the established character of the surrounding area." THe scheme concerns eight bedrooms in the property with a shared kitchen, communal living space and separate bathrooms, shower rooms and WCs.

Breakfast club gives food for thought to armed forces by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 A BREAKFAST club for armed forces veterans around Bognor Regis has expanded into the rest of the morning. Organiser Tom O'Connor has been able to add extra time to the meeting because of the new venue. Hosting the Armed Forces Breakfast Club at the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street thanks to its operator, Age UK West Sussex, means more chances to sit and talk to each other. Mr O'Connor said there could be

plenty of subjects to discuss with the government's attitude towards servicemen and women among them. "As a veteran, I feel the government has let veterans and the armed forces' community down. Morale in the Army is at an all-time low. "Former military personnel can suffer a range of problems because the government has let them down. THey are not following their own military covenant. THere is a shortage of housing and the effect of the austerity cuts. "Because I have direct experience of that, I can offer support and signpost people to organisations like the Royal

British Legion and the Soldiers', Sailors' and Air Force Association. "Being able to meet at the centre is great because we can sit and talk about a wide range of things after the breakfast," said Tom. "It could be about people's personal circumstances, if they are unemployed and can't get a job or if they are divorced and having problems." Tom said veterans often suffered medical conditions like post traumatic stress disorder and depression as a result of their service. THese could hinder their efforts to adjust to life as a civilian.

His club attracted 12 people to its first meeting at an another venue in the town centre earlier this year. Numbers have since fluctuated but he said he was sure more would be attracted to the sessions once word about them began to spread more. Tom joined the Army in 1972 when he was aged 17 and served in Northern Ireland during his six years. He moved to Bognor from Yapton in 2013. THe club meets at 9am on the last Tuesday each month. Its original venue was the Wlliam Hardwicke pub on the High Street but menu changes meant a new venue was necessary.

Hayley's comeback is hailed by Daren and the Lotus Styling team ADVERTISING FEATURE HAYLEY Meenaghan boasts a colourful career when it comes to her passion of hairdressing. For the stylist was a runner-up in a national competition run by hair giant Goldwell, and she is keen to be in the reckoning for such acknowledgement of her craft once more. Hayley was recognised for her amazing talent in hair colouring in a Goldwell Color Zoom competition. Hayley moved to Bognor Regis from London, then joined the Lotus Styling team and quickly built up a busy clientele. Now, after some time away from working for happy clients at Lotus Styling following the birth of her son, she is eager to get back to work at the south coast’s favourite salon. Hayley, who will pick up the tools of her trade once more next month, said: “I’m really keen to get back to the team and be part of such exciting challenges. "I knew almost immediately that Lotus Styling was somewhere that I was going to enjoy working. “THere was definitely a nice vibe about the place and the ambience is definitely conducive to producing work of which I am immensely proud. “I love lots of aspects of styling — creating new looks and cutting hair, in fact, anything challenging. “But I particularly enjoy and, it has been said, excel at ‘hair up’ and colouring. It thrills me to transform a client’s look and see the way they leave the salon with a spring

in their step thanks to their fabulous new look.” Hayley’s return has excited owner and company founder Daren Terry, his wife, Kate, the salon ambassador, as well as the rest of the valued staff members. Daren said: “We’re delighted for Hayley on becoming a mum and we are all thrilled she has decided to come back to her other family, here at Lotus Styling. “We’ve really missed Hayley, she has such a warm personality and is super talented. We’re very, very busy so it will be nice to be able to have her back doing what she loves best, and I know her clients are delighted too. “We’re already taking bookings for when she comes back later next month, and I think that tells you its own story.” Daren insists Hayley fits the bill perfectly when it comes to how harmoniously she immediately immersed herself in the Lotus Styling ethos. He added: “We’ve been in business in Bognor Regis for 27 years and I think the reason we have flourished is because of our unswerving approach to the way we go about our work. “We've always had a philosophy of using the latest techniques with the best products, state-of-the-art tools and, of course, best staff! “In Hayley we have the perfect example of this, an embodiment of our values if you like.” So what are you waiting for? ` Bandstand music FREE music is being offered in Bognor Regis this weekend. Sunday sees the first of a series of concerts at the Hotham Park bandstand. THe entertainment if the first to be arranged by Hotham Park Heritage Trust and will take place from 2pm-4pm, weather permitting. THe first concert will see pianist songwriter Elliott Herrington put his own spin on well-known songs. Future concerts will take place in July and August. Malcolm Hunter, of the trust, said: "All are invited to bring a chair or rug and enjoy free live music in the beautiful surroundings of the park."

` Charity quiz A CHARITY quiz night is being held this month in aid of Bognor Regis-based 4Sight. THe brain teasers will be posed from 7pm on June 17 at THe Waverley on Marine Drive West. Tickets cost £10 and include a fish and chip supper and quiz entry for teams of up to six. THey are available until next Wednesday from 4Sight Bradbury Centre, 36 Victoria Drive, Bognor Regis, or phone 01243 838002.

` Club extension AN ENLARGED bar seating area could be built at Middleton Sports Club. THe club has applied for planning approval to extend its premises of 1,200 square metres by 64 square metres to create the extra space as well as an enlarged meeting space above with a viewing balcony. THe proposals also include 16 safety cricket net poles around the Sea Way site at the request of its neighbours.

` Prisoner caught DANNY Tony Brand, 33, was arrested in Dorset last Friday after he had absconded from Ford Open Prison on May 27.

Call is made for residents to write in about waste site AN APPEAL has been made for Bognor Regis residents to be given more time to have their say about cutbacks to the town's waste site. Cllr Francis Oppler said he wanted the consultation into plans to shut the tip two days a week and reduce its opening hours to stretch into next month. West Sussex County Council has set a deadline of this Sunday for comments to be made about the reduction in service. But Cllr Oppler (LD, Bognor Regis East) said that was too soon. "I would urge people to write in because there are only 48 hours left for them to do that. "I have asked for the consultation to be extended. It can't be meaningful unless the public actually know what is happening. "THey would be horrified if they knew what was happening. However, the vast majority of the public are unaware that this consultation is being carried out. "THere are no signs on the sites advertising the consultation and I understand that only security staff at the sites are allowed to give out leaflets but only when requested. "Why are there no large posters placed at the site entrances to advertise the consultation?"

As reported, the county council intends to open the household waste recycling site on the Arun Business Park off the A29 Shripney Road on only five days a week. It will shut at 4.30pm every day throughout the year. It is presently open weekdays from 8am-7pm between April and October and weekends and bank holidays from 9am-7pm. THe winter openingtimes are 8am-5pm on weekdays the rest of the year 9am-5pm at weekends and bank holidays. THe earlier closing will come into effect this October if the county councillors approve them. But Cllr Oppler said they would hit many households around the town. "People don't believe I'm serious when I tell them about the cuts. I just think the council want to carry out the consultation as quickly as possible," she said. "THat would allow them to say the public aren't fussed by what is happening and they are able to push the cuts through." Cllr Oppler raised his concerns about the cuts at the latest full meeting of the county council. He is worried that restricting the tip's opening will see longer queues of motorists waiting to get into the site. THis could see the line of vehicles stretching back on

to the busy A29. Weekends in particular already bring upwards of 20 motorists waiting outside the tip. THat number were seen using the site in just one hour on a recent Sunday. Cllr Oppler also fears the cuts will lead to more fly tipping around town because people will either not be bothered to wait for a long time to dispose of their rubbish responsibly or be unable to get to the tip before it closes. THe county council's intention to charge £4 a bag for certain types of material and for tyres would increase the risk of waste being dumped in the streets, he said. He added the effect of the cuts on the staff of the council's contractor, Viridor, who work there could force some of them to take part-time jobs to make up for the loss of wages. THeir usual working week was 36 hours bur he believed some of the staff at the site could lose 15 hours of work a week if the cutbacks went ahead. THe county council says it is having to save £2m from its waste services budget as part of its need to save £18.6m next year because of cuts in funding from central government. THe final decision about the opening hours is due to be made by councillors this summer.

Gardeners want to raise roof with their colourful displays for church GARDENERS around Pagham are set to put their blooms on show. THe village's biannual open gardens day takes place this weekend. Sunday's showcase of ten plots will help to Raise the Roof for the parish church. Money raised will go to help the roof appeal which is set to be launched for St THomas a'Becket Church. THe vicar, the Rev Mark Eminson, says in his latest monthly newsletter the work was likely to cost £250,000-300,000. "We will be seeking grants and we may receive legacies but, if you feel able to contribute anything, it will be greatly appreciated. "We feel so privileged to have such a beautiful and ancient church. But there's a risk at the moment of feeling it's now too much of a burden to bear. "However, our forebears have passed it on to us over these past 800 years so we are loathe to let them down. "But it is also a very present witness to God's reality, beauty and care in a world which is sometimes false, ugly and uncaring. "THe church building, its activities, its people seek to reassure all of you that you are precious in God's sight and that Pagham as a whole matters." THe gardens will be open from 1.30-5pm this Sunday. THey are located across Pagham from Church Way to Hook Lane. One of those who has taken part in all the events since they were started by the Friends of Pagham Parish Church is Sue Davis. Sue, of Church Way, has more time to spend in her garden since she retired from a doctors'

surgery when she reached 70 last year. "I'm out there most days because I can devote more time to it. I like to grow plants. It's full of colour at the moment. It looks pretty and there's always something to see. "It's good to raise money for St THomas a'Becket Church and it's also nice to meet other gardeners. "We talk about gardening, exchange ideas and plants and it's a good way to get to know the area. THey like seeing what they can do in a small area." Sue's garden, in which she is pictured left, wraps around her bungalow and is bursting with life. She has a vibrant show of foxgloves, clematis, various grasses and perennials like geraniums. She has also recently installed a larger pond which she hopes will be populated by the frogs which made themselves at home in her smaller one. One of the open gardens' organsiers, David Smith, said: "THis is always a popular event. We had about 200 visitors in 2014 and raised about £1,000 for the church. All the funds we make this year will go to support Raise the Roof and we hope to make a lot." Tickets priced £5 are available in advance from Mo Hatzfield on 01243 268576 or THe Point charity shop on THe Parade in Pagham. Brochures, maps and tickets on the day can be bought from the Church Centre in Nyetimber Lane, Pagham. St THomas a'Becket Church occupies a site which saw its first church built by the Saxons some 1,300 years ago. THe present building dates from around 1210 and was one of the first to be named after the murdered Archbishop of Canterbury.

that the unsettled sand meant that some unusual items were appearing but it was hard to believe it when we found the bracelet. "It's with experts now who are trying to authenticate the period but it is believed to be of Saxon origin. "Lots of lead shot has been found at low tide opposite Barrack Lane and I was told this is because soldiers from the nearby barracks used to shoot at floating barrels out at sea as target practice. "Word seems to have got around and now at low tide there are more and more people joining the hunt and I have heard of other similar finds."

Jolly japes at No.10 for Gill and her family THESE fun-loving Bognorians put the party in to politics when they enjoyed a tour of No.10 Downing Street. Former employee Gill Brady organised the trip for her friends and family and Margaret Booker took these fabulous snaps of the day. Pictured left with a giggling bobby are Gill’s daughter Claire and children Jacob, five, and Connie, almost two. THE group above are all smiles as they pose outside Prime Minsiter David Cameron's official abode.

BRITAIN will continue to be a great country in Europe and an insignificant one outside it, Remain campaigners argued in Bognor Regis. Former town mayor and Labour general election candidate Roger Nash said this country would be ignored if it tried to go it alone. "In a criminal court, you have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that something has happened. I know some of you are passionate about leaving but I have not heard tonight that you can absolutely say with 100 per cent certainty that we are going to be better of out of the EU. "I want to ensure we remain as Great Britain not the miserable 'Little Britain' we will become if we leave," he said. He detailed the millions of pounds of Euro money which had benefited projects in West Sussex. He also pointed out industries like agriculture, farming and health depended on employees from Europe for their workforces. His comments were interrupted at times by heckling and shouting from some members of the audience of about 150 in the Alexandra THeatre last Friday. Tempers briefly flared as passions overflowed on a subject renowned for strong opinions. Votes with show of hands at the start and end of the meeting showed about three in four of those present wanted Britain to leave the EU. Only a few were undecided. Each side was given 15 minutes to make their cases followed by more than an hour

f Roger Nash states his case of questions and ten minutes for the closing speeches from both sides. Baroness Smith of Basildon, Labour's leader in the House of Lords, said: "We have to look forward, not back. We are in a changing world. THe lives we lead are different from those of our parents and grandparents. "THe world is becoming a more dangerous place. It's time for more co-operation and working together. "THere is no land of honey as promised by the Leave campaigners which will solve all our problems. THat's the truth. I believe passionately in working with others and not being isolated."

Problems with the lack of housing, the over-stretched NHS and community services would not suddenly solved if we voted to leave. "THese problems are not there because of the EU. THey are not going to be solved if we leave the EU either," she said "We don't know what Leave looks like. THe real problems we have are the fault of our government, not what happens in the EU." On the economy and security and crime, the EU was a benefit to Britain for little cost. "At the moment, we spend £1 per household per day on the EU. Taking out a funeral plan is one of the most thoughtful decisions you could make.

"What are we afraid of? THere is something wrong with the system. It has got to be changed and it can only be changed outside the EU. I look to the future after June 23." He was supported by Ian Brown, of Business for Britain (South East). THe company owner from Portsmouth said: "It's all about sovereignty. It's all about democracy. It's all about taking back control. We are losing control of our country. "THe EU is totally unreformable. We can talk about change for decades but nothing much will change. It will benefit all those who work there and benefit the big multi-nationals but it will not benefit people like us. It's not doing anything for us." He said the current trade deals were designed to support European farmers and stopped Britain trading with other nations, like the Commonwealth countries, around the world. "THere are 181 countries in the world. THere are 28 countries in the EU. We don't need the EU. THe meeting was held by Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce and Industry and backed by the Bognor Regis Post.

Parish festival is the biggest yet – and is set to be bigger still HUNDREDS of visitors turned the Bersted Parish Festival into the biggest yet. THe tenth of the annual events attracted a good turnout for the largest number of events and stalls. Next year's could be even bigger and better if the festival committee chairman sees his plans come to fruition. Bersted parish councillor Jonathan Spencer said: "It's gone very well but a lot of people have been asking why the

festival is only on for four hours. THey thought it should be all day. "It's getting to the point now where I think we have to go for it and put the festival on all weekend. "It's getting bigger and it's now a good all-round show of what is going on in the area. It's an enjoyable day for people in Bersted to come to and relax. "Most of the stalls are for charities. So, all the money is going to good causes at the end of the day."

f Dogs are put through their paces

Council members pulled together to create the day, said Cllr Spencer, who started the festival in 2006. "I would like to carry on and see the festival become bigger and there are always improvements which can be made. If the council decides to hold it over two days, I will probably do it again." THe festival took over most of Jubilee Field off Chalcraft Lane last Sunday. THe dog show was again popular. Dog owners also had the chance to show what their pets could do around the agility ring. Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club's members also staged a display. Club secretary Hilary Sykes said: "THe dogs are learning all the time. By being here, they are learning to work with the noise around them, with lots of other people around them and other dogs." THe exercises on show from some of the club's 50-plus members and their pets included retrieve and heel work. "We have a range of dogs here, including those who have only been with us for half a term," said Hilary. "It's not just about the best dogs on show." Other activities included zorbing and a bouncy castle as well as a line-up of 14 classic cars and four military vehicles to admire.

I WAS delighted to spend some time this week catching up with incredibly talented local musician, Ben Harvey, who has some very exciting news for all you festival-goers! Read the full interview here: So, firstly can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how your musical career started? I’m a singer-songwriter from Chichester. I’ve been playing music for around 15 years but only started taking it seriously when I went to Chichester College. You announced yesterday that you’re going to be playing Victorious Festival this year – what was your reaction when you found out?

I’m playing Brighton’s Oxjam event on June 17th at Junkyard Dogs which I'm really looking forward to. It’s a great line-up plus it’s a free event, so it would be great to get a crowd and make some money for charity. Mother’s Days

We're counting down the days until the sheer joy of Blues on the Farm! IN celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Blues on the Farm, the festival have planned various impromptu 'pop up' performances. Expect, among other audible treats, an incredible foot-stomping rootsy-blues duo found busking on the streets of Brighton Festival, intimate low-key performances from under-theradar musicians, to exceptional performances from very special guests… and all kinds of musical experiences in between. Look out for these impromptu shenanigans around the festival site – an extra 25th anniversary treat for this year's festival goers! In addition to the 'pop-up' stage, the main stage showcases an excellent line-up, not least from the incredible Ian Siegal, on Saturday night (18th June). Ian is a British Blues Hall of Famer, eight-times British Blues Awards winner, three-times European Blues Awards winner, multiple USA Blues Music Awards nominee and feted by everyone from Mojo to Classic Rock.

Come celebrate the mother of all holidays

Last year marked 25 years since Ian's first professional gig with a band – that was back in the early nineties when blues was decidedly unfashionable, but he persevered! Today he is arguably one of the most successful British Blues artistes. While he is best known as a bluesman, that is just one shade in the palette of an artiste who slips between continents, eras and expectations. His love of nascent rock ‘n’ rollers like Little Richard and Elvis, blues titans

such as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, and the experimentalism of Tom Waits, fuels a powerful voice and magnetic stage presence. Blues On THe Farm attracts a wide audience for it's excellent line up, but also for it's special countryside location, a handful of miles from both the seafront in one direction and the beautiful Sussex town of Chichester in the other.

him to create and star in his very own show. He followed Billy Joel and his music for many years, and has put together an incredible two hour show that will leave you singing all your favourite songs for weeks to come. He spent months perfecting the sounds and phrases of all the Billy Joel tracks meaning this really is a show not to be missed. If you’re a Billy Joel fan then you’re certainly in for a very special treat on Saturday 18 June.. Tickets can be booked via THe Regis Centre Box Office on 01243 861010.

Release date: 10 June Director: Isabel Coixet Starring: Patricia Clarkson, Ben Kingsley, Grace Gummer Genre: Comedy, Romance

MELISSA McCarthy (Bridesmaids, THe Heat, Tammy) headlines THe Boss as a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she’s caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. McCarthy is joined in THe Boss by an allstar cast led by Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage and Kathy Bates. Directed by Ben Falcone (Tammy), the comedy is based on an original character created by McCarthy herself.

ISABEL Coixet's slice-of-life comedy/drama Learning to Drive stars Patricia Clarkson as Wendy, a middle-aged book critic who is shattered when her husband Ted leaves her. In order to visit her daughter, who lives upstate, Wendy begins taking driving lessons from Darwan (Ben Kingsley) an American citizen originally from India who makes a living as a cabbie and giving driving lessons. THe two strike up a friendship that helps her learn to take control of her life, and him adjust to his new life after an arranged marriage.

of y r o t s i h al v i n r a the c Events have taken place throughout the town’s history, in the 1870s it was known as a Regatta, with events focused on the beach and pier. Eventually a town Carnival was arranged and it would seem that the first major recorded event was held in 1936 from 11th to 18th July and covered a full week with a wide range of events taking place. THe first event was organised by a Carnival Trust and commenced with the crowning of the Carnival Queen, Miss Barbara Morrison – her maids of honour were Miss D. Waight, Miss H. Holloway, Miss D Cook and Miss A. Outen. THis procession was organised through the town from the East Car Park (now Butlin’s) along the seafront to the West End Car Park. THe range of events was reported in a programme and showed the daily activities, including on the Sunday, the military bands that played and local uniformed bodies attended. Monday was specifically children’s day: folk dancing, mini battle at sea; bathing belle’s parade and confetti battle on pier (interesting). THe week followed with Tuesday: baby show, which included ‘special difficulty class for delicate babies’, comic football and pushball, community singing, carnival ball with ‘special nonstop dancing,’ and fancy Dress. Wednesday brought the gymkhana, a gigantic motor treasure hunt and another grand carnival procession, followed by fireworks. THursday was an event-packed evening. Friday ‘Grand Pageant of Living Bridge (this appears to be a live card game). Apart from these main events there were lots of other things going on around the town, for example the world famous Lindberg brothers performing the Death Dive in Flames on an 80 feet dive into 5 1/1 feet of water. THere were works on three nights. I think we should remember that this was held at a

Sylvia Endacott time when families stayed around the area for the summer, long before trips abroad for holidays. THere could be fewer events organised; hence it would be a real focus activity which was inclusive to many local organisations. Whilst an interesting and well attended event, there seems to be little recorded over the ensuing years. Next we see that in 1966 the Carnival Queen was Miss Maureen Homes. THere was also, for the first time at carnival, a young princess, Trudy Tullett. Each local school was invited to select an entry between the ages of nine and 15 – nine entries were received. THe events which started this year included the Pagham Yacht Club Carnival Race, Rolls Royce Rally and Concourse of Elegance on the Esplanade; On Monday there was a Teenage Dance at the Shoreline Club. THe Camera Clubs exhibition ran all week, ending on Saturday with “What you all waiting for?” A mammoth Carnival Procession ending with a barbecue on the beach where two whole oxen were roasted. In 1970 the event was run by the Lions Club of Bognor Regis. Miss Janet Grimsey was the Carnival Queen and the event was still running for a week, but many of the events were now taking place at Hampshire Avenue Recreation Ground. Various organisations have been involved such as in 1980 the event was down to a one day event and the Carnival Queen was Vanessa Ide, and by 1986 the Bognor Regis and District Round Table organised the event in 1987 it was the turn of the Lions Club of Bognor Regis. In recent years various groups including the Town Council have organised this event. If you have any further information or history of town carnivals do please let us know.

Martin Lury The Post's wine expert with his opinion about this week's best buys

The burger joint on a roll Fun surroundings, yummy food and friendly waitresses with attention to detail – what more could you possibly want? IT HAS the reputation for serving "Chichester's best burgers" – but after my dining experience this week I would suggest they could go as far as to cast that net a little wider. Faultless from start to finish, the Real Burger Kitchen delievered on every level – with a clean and fun setting, comfy seating, lovely staff and even better food. THe fresh food does not even break the bank either making this the perfect midweek treat and suitable for all, from family meals to a fun date. I took my partner along who claims to be something of a burger connoisseur, having been to many burger joints in his time, but even he was impressed with the wide and varied menu on offer. Starters include chicken wings, garlic breads and calamari but, excited to see a range of tasty looking burgers brought out to the table next to us, we decided to go straight for the main event. THe hardest job we had was picking a burger – because there are so many that sound delicious. I opted for the chargrilled chicken and salad in a brioche bun and opted to add chillies, jalapenos and guacamole as well as a serving of sweet potato fries while my other half went for a 'daily special' – the BBQ Ranch Burger

which was offered to celebrate National BBQ Week 2016. THis featured grilled BBQ chicken breast which was topped with melted, spicy, spitfire cheese and crunchy coleslaw served with fries. I was not disappointed – the sweet potato fries were crispy and perfectly cooked, no soggy bottoms here and the burger was delicious. It felt like we were in an American diner, the portions were hugely generous and deliciously tasty – so much so that I felt bad about leaving half of my bun on the plate as I was so full. My partner devoured his beast of a burger, and said it was the tastiest he had had in a long time – coming in at just £10.25 for the special – it was an absolute bargain. But it is not all beef and chicken burgers at this place – think hot dogs and lamb and fish options as well as a great selection of vegetarian and vegan options, so no diner is missing out. At the Real Burger Kitchen they really have all bases covered. Not only is the food scrumptious, but all of the meat the talented chefs use, is locally sourced from Earleys of Barnham – and it is these small touches that make the difference. You are eating in a restaurant that would hold

its own among the biggest, and all the while supporting local businesses. THen came the desserts. Now, we were both massively full, but we felt we should try out the tempting desserts purely for the sake of reviewing. Just thinking of everyone else. And I am so glad we did. As a child I was hooked on banana splits, so it brought memories flooding back when I saw that as an option on the menu. It was like being transported back to being five-years-old again when it was promptly brought out. Strawberry, vanilla and chocolate ice cream served with lashings of whipped cream and a perfectly placed cherry on the top with warm chocolate sauce expertly drizzled all over. It was the perfect end to the perfect meal. My other half opted for an old favourite too – an ice cream float. Do you remember how excited you would get when you were allowed one of these fizzy treats as a child? He opted for a Dr Pepper and vanilla combo – which came out fizzing and bubbling to perfection. Steering away from the food – which admittedly is rather hard to do purely because of the standard – this restaurant has it all and the owners should be very proud of what they

FRENCH, Italian and Spanish wines feature this week and I begin with a French Dry White which happens to be the only Sauvignon Blanc produced in the Burgundy region. I recommend the Saint-Bris Sauvignon Blanc currently on offer at M&S for a bargain price of just £5 with a delightful citrus and tangy flavour. THis wine, which is grown in the same limestone-rich soils as Chablis, is a highly distinctive unoaked white. If you want to try some fine Italian reds Tesco’s finest Barolo has complexity and depth and is worth the £13 price, but, if you want a Barolo with violet spice and vanilla nuances, pop over to Sainsbury's to procure the Serre Alte Barolo Reserva 2005 – a veritable gem priced down to £20. Baked White Chocolate Cheesecake with Raspberry Coulis INGREDIENTS For the base 2oz (50g) butter 1oz (25g) dark chocolate 5oz (150g) digestive biscuits, crushed For the filling 10oz (300g) white chocolate, broken into pieces 14oz (400g) full fat cream cheese 150 ml (¼ pint) soured cream 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract To serve About 225g (8oz) fresh strawberries or raspberries For the Raspberry Coulis 250g raspberries 1tbsp icing sugar 1/2 lemon juice only or to taste

PREPARATION & QUANTITY THis delectable delight is perfect for the summer months to surprise guests, or even keep all to yourself! A tasty, but uncomplicated dish – you'll find yourself having to share this recipe over and over again. Start by pre-heating your oven to 160°C/Gas 3/Fan 140°C. You will need to grease and line the base of a cake tin, ideally one around 8 inches or 20cm deep with non-stick paper or butter. THen melt butter and your dark chocolate in a small saucepan over a low heat trying, along the way, to not scoff too much of the chocolate as you go!

chocolate to become too hot), stir occasionally with a spoon until runny and smooth. Whisk the cream cheese and eggs together in a large bowl until smooth, add soured cream and vanilla and whisk again until completely smooth with no lumps. Stir in the melted chocolate and mix together. Yum! Pour in the tin and spread evenly over the chilled base. Bake in preheated oven for about 45 minutes until firm around the edge and just set in the middle. Remove from the oven. Using a small palette knife run the knife around the edge of the tin and then allow to cool and chill.

THis then needs to chill in the fridge while you crack on with the scrummy cheesecake filling.

For the raspberry coulis, tip all of the coulis ingredients into a frying pan and heat until the raspberries start to break down. Transfer to a food processor and blend until smooth, then pass through a sieve to remove the pips. Set aside until ready to serve with either a rich vanilla ice cream or a delicate cake.

Break the white chocolate into a bowl and melt very gently over a pan of hot water (do not allow the

To serve, decorate with raspberries and raspberry coulis on the side. THen, enjoy!

Once done, stir in your biscuits – which should be crushed – and press down evenly across the base of the tin.

Letters to the Editor...

WELCOME to our latest column provided by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre.

Dear Editor

What better way to enjoy lunch than sat in the sunshine in the Nag's Head in Chichester? My companion and I felt summer had finally arrived as we were shown to a delightfully sunny spot by a well tended garden, resplendent with blooms and overflowing with a variety of fragrant herbs just waiting to be picked and added to the culinary offerings! We were served by the very friendly and accommodating Steve who gave us menus to browse for special and standard dishes. THe very extensive choice includes a daily fish dish as well as the popular carvery. THe menu boasts an excellent selection of traditional British favourites sat alongside Mediterranean and Asian influenced cuisine; THai Green Curry, Chilli Con Carne, Moules Marinière, and Chinese Crispy Chilli Beef, alongside British classics such as Bangers and Mash, Liver and Bacon, and Fish and Chips. To add to the choice they also offer a full range of sandwiches, burgers and steaks. I opted for the Traditional Prawn Cocktail from the regular menu and the vegetarian Roasted Red Pepper dish from the specials. I am not a vegetarian but it sounded like a summery dish that would be appropriate for such glorious weather. My companion, a sworn carnivore, opted for the crispy beef to start, followed by the ribs. Steve told us the

ribs were a very large portion, and it might be a struggle to get through them, but my companion was well up for the challenge and decided to go ahead regardless! My prawn cocktail arrived beautifully presented as a generous roundel of succulent prawns in a luscious baby pink Marie Rose sauce, nestled on a bed of fresh salad leaves and tomatoes, accompanied by brown bread and a pot of creamy butter. My companion was equally delighted with his pile of crispy chilli beef – delicate tender strips of beef in a crunchy light batter coating with a hint of chilli sauce, served with a salad garnish. Enjoyable though our starters were, we were glad to have left room for the gastronomic delight that was the main course. My vegetarian dish was so delicious even I could have been converted to becoming a non-meat eater. THe dish is described as ‘roasted red pepper, courgette and warm new potato salad, served with halloumi chips'. THe roasted pepper, chargrilled and sweet, was served on a bed of rocket, fresh tomato, red onion, and honey and mustard dressing, which complemented the new potatoes and courgettes arranged around the centrepiece perfectly. Courgette, in my opinion, can be a rather bland and uninspired vegetable, but these, lightly charred, had a delicate, almost

soft texture, each being topped off with the warm herb seasoned new potato half – and the combination was a delight to the tongue. I had never had halloumi chips before, strips of halloumi coated in breadcrumbs and deepfried – absolutely exquisite, and definitely a dish to try out with the barbecue this summer. My fellow diner's Barbeque Glazed Pork Ribs arrived as promised, a huge plate of glossy brown ribs doused in a deep rich sweet smoky barbecue sauce and served on a bed of fresh salad leaves with a piquant dressing, and a side of home-made fat chunky chips, and what he described as the ‘best coleslaw’ he had tasted in a long time. He made a brave attempt at eating all the ribs but was defeated in the end – as Steve said he might be after the substantial crispy beef starter. Definitely no complaints about the portion sizes at the Nag's Head! We skipped the home-made dessert on this occasion, but it will be an excuse to return in the very near future – as if we needed one. We dined al fresco, but while there we had a look around the interior of the restaurant. It has recently undergone some refurbishment and the result is a very light and welcoming venue, simple but stylishly rustic. VOLUNTEERS’ Week is an annual event which takes place at the start of June. It celebrates the contribution made by millions of volunteers of course for many of the organisations that support local groups in Arun volunteers are essential. However, I have heard people moan about such “free labour” – in the current climate of reduced funding, many organisations are thinking about the potential for volunteers to help meet the gap between demand and capacity to deliver. So, is it the way we talk about the issue that matters? When discussing volunteers performing roles that might previously have been done by paid staff, people largely talk about job "substitution". THis term suggests that volunteers are a substitute for paid staff. THe reality is that it is extremely rare for one volunteer to take on the entirety of one employee's work. THe language also suggests volunteering and paid work are the same, with only the salary defining the difference. Yet volunteering is different from paid work; that's why more than 20 million people do it every year in the UK. As some say, volunteering is not work but serious leisure. Job replacement is different. Take, for example, a charity providing support to housebound clients which is handed a significant funding cut. THe charity's managers consider the difficult but inevitable option of laying-off paid staff and start to explore how services can be delivered with fewer paid staff and more volunteers. To whom does that charity have the greatest obligation: its employees whose work could be reallocated among volunteers, or its clients who rely on its services? THe answer should be clear – its clients. THe staff are not being made redundant so that volunteers can take over. THey're being made redundant regardless. So long as the charity goes about it properly, why shouldn't it deliver through volunteers if it can't afford to employ everyone it once did? As long as volunteers are not exploited, we must acknowledge that involving more of them has the potential to bring many benefits, including widening participation and improving services if, and only if, there is appropriate investment in their management. And of course a major return on there own happiness. Giving back has powerful results. THe ideal model, regardless of the financial climate, must be that of taking a mixed approach, with paid staff and volunteers working together. Faced with two undesirable redundancy situations: letting all staff go and closing a service, or retaining a skeleton staff and increasing the number of volunteers – we would advocate the latter every time. IT seems everywhere you turn there’s a news story or a discussion about whether we should be ‘in’ or ‘out’ of the EU. As the time to vote draws nearer, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how the outcome may affect Chichester’s property market. Journalists, who are generally London-based, seem to focus on the impact of things in London. Whilst it may be true that a ‘Brexit’ would see demand for high-end property drop in London, as its standing in the world drops, is that likely to impact us down here on the south coast? At the moment things seem similar to the run-up to last year’s general election; with a level of uncertainty creating a reluctance towards moving home. THis has led to there being a 7% reduction in the number of properties available to buy in Chichester compared to a year ago (297 now vs 321 last May). It seems clear that the ‘in’ camp are scaremongering homeowners by suggesting house prices will drop if we leave the EU (George Osborne recently spoke of house price drops of 18%). Meanwhile, the ‘out’ camp are using this as ammunition towards the younger ‘generation rent’, suggesting an EU exit is an opportunity towards a new era of more affordable housing. A slightly more in-depth report

Dear Editor THIS month, the Kincora Inquiry at Banbridge Courthouse, Northern Ireland, is investigating allegations that "State Agencies" provided security protection to known paedophiles. In 1974, former Army Intelligence Officer Colin Wallace – who lives in Arundel – discovered sexual abuse was taking place at the Kincora Boys Home and brought it to the attention of his superiors. Nothing was done. In 1981, seven years later, three senior care workers working at Kincora were jailed

actually suggested house prices would rise 8.8% in two years if we remain in the EU… and they’d still rise 8.4% if we left the EU. So not much difference there. Commentators say an exit would lead to an increase in interest rates (the same commentators who’ve been saying a rise is coming for years now I presume…), which would increase mortgage costs and potentially stymie house prices. Although with 40.5% of properties in Chichester being mortgage free (compared to 31% nationally), I think Chichester would weather this storm better than most. In contrast, there could in fact be a short-term immigration surge before the borders are tightened up, which could lead to a rise in prices and rents. Longerterm the opposite may be true as net immigration eases. Might a shortage of cheaper skilled labour from abroad lead to more expensive new-build properties? At this stage it is all pure guesswork and you’ll need to take a view on whose guesses are more credible. I believe property will continue to rise in value over the long-term due to the fundamental shortage of homes. THere could even be some property bargains to be had later this year!

I agree with comments made by Cllr Oppler, that there will be an increase in fly-tipping as a result of the above quoted proposals (Bognor Regis Post June 3, 2106) I have read two articles produced by WSCC regarding the changes proposed. In one article they posed the question, “Will fly-tipping increase?” Part of the answer was, “Evidence from other County Councils who have made similar changes to those we are proposing show that there has not been an increase in fly-tipping as a result". In the second article it poses the question, “Would fly-tipping increase if these proposals were implemented?” Part of the answer was, “No. THere’s no evidence to show that West Sussex residents will resort to fly-tipping – which is a criminal offence and blights local areas – if they cannot use a recycling centre for whatever reason. People who are prepared to travel to a recycling centre are unlikely to even consider fly-tipping, let alone do it.” On May 20, I sent an email to Cllr Barling and Waste Services Contracts at WSCC pointing out that their answers to those questions may be incorrect. I referred them to a paper published by Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Government Statistical Service dated October 20, 2015. It states, “Local authorities dealt with 900 thousand incidents of fly-tipping in 2014/15, an increase of 5.6 per cent since 2013/14 with nearly two thirds of fly-tips involving household waste. THe trend in incidents of fly-tipping had been downward until 2013/14 when there was an increase to 852 thousand incidents. THe number of fly-tipping incidents increased again in 2014/15 to 900 thousand incidents. THe estimated cost of clearance of fly-tipping to local authorities in England in 2014/15 was nearly £50 million, an 11 per cent increase on 2013/14 In my email I asked Cllr Barling and Waste Services Contracts to justifly their claims that fly-tipping has not increased and will not increase if they introduce the changes when Central Government figures supplied by local authorites state that flytipping has increased. To date I have had no reply from either. David Gambrill Felpham

Yet despite this slump, the House Price Index from the Land Registry for England and Wales shows a 0.5% monthly property price increase. In England and Wales as a whole the average property price stands at £189,901. THe average property price however in the south east now stands at £266,729 – down 0.4% from last month. THis is second only to Greater London which has an average price of an eye-watering £534,785. THird is the East of England with the average price coming in at £220,989, while in fourth is the South West at £197,085. THe average price in Wales is £122,221, while the cheapest place to buy is the North East of England where the average price comes in at £97,581. Nationwide added that "healthy labour market conditions and low borrowing costs" are expected to "underpin a steady increase in housing market activity once stamp dutyrelated volatility has passed" – but this is all dependent on the economic recovery remaining on track. First time buyer regional hotspots are led by Croydon, Dartford and Luton – all easily commutable distances into the centre of London – all with annual surges of more than 18%. Rightmove said that the modest May rise of 0.4% – equatable to £1,118 – in the price of property coming to market in the last month masks a nasty Spring surprise for first time buyers. First-time sales hit again in 'cool off' period THE annual rate of UK house price growth cooled further in May, after slowing the previous month, according to the Nationwide building society. THe annual rate of house price growth was 4.7% in May, down from 4.9% in April and 5.7% in March. In May alone, house prices rose by 0.2%, the same as the previous month. THe Nationwide said one factor was that many people had rushed to buy houses in March because of stamp duty changes that took effect on 1 April. Further evidence of the drop off in activity following the peak in March came in UK mortgage figures from the Bank of England. THere were 66,250 home loans approved for house purchases in April, an 11-month low and down on the average of 71,075 over the previous six months, the figures showed. THe volatility generated by the stamp duty changes – which added a surcharge for buy-to-let investors and the owners of second homes – made it difficult to gauge the underlying strength of activity in the housing market, said Nationwide chief economist Robert Gardner. "House purchase activity is likely to fall in the months ahead, given the number of purchasers that brought forward transactions," he added. "THe recovery thereafter may also be fairly gradual, especially in the buy-to-let sector, where other policy changes, such as the reduction in tax relief for landlords from 2017, are likely to exert an ongoing drag."

DO you have the dream of living in a luxury part of West Sussex playing the role of a Lord or Lady of the manor? If so – this stunning property could be just for you. Up with Henry Adams in Chichester, Oakleigh in North Mundham has just come on to the market with a guide price of £925,000. THe handsome home was built in the 1850s but in 1980 was converted to two separate dwellings, Oakleigh being the northern half. THe interior was then reconfigured with the utmost care and attention to detail to make the home true to how it was built. Great imagination and a great deal of love has turned this elegant home into something truly special – it has maintained its period character with high corniced ceilings on both floors with lovely polished wood floors in all the principal rooms and tiled floors in the hallways and conservatory.

has left a property drought and price surge. THere was a 6.2% – equatable to £11,298 – monthly jump in price of typical first-time buyer properties and a strong demand continues in this sector despite withdrawal of many investors following the introductions of higher stamp duty taxes. Estate agents are adament that first time buyers still very much are looking and have a place in the market despite new-to-themarket supply being down on average 1.5% year on year. Nationally, over the last 12 months there has been an increase in property transactions – there was an average of 73,744 property sales per month between October 2014 and January 2014. THis compares to an average of 74,374 12 months later. Have you found it harder as a first time buyer in the pricey south east? Let us know letters@sussexpost.co.uk

South coast a 'commuter's dream' to live?

SEASIDE destinations have been named in a list of "rising stars" which have done remarkably well since the economic downturn. Savills have named the best and worst places where property has kept – and even exceeded – its value, with many south coast hotspots given a spot on the leader's list. With it's remarkably quick trains into the city, Brighton is right up there. Brighton is a key beneficiary of the ripple effect from London, with many commuters opting for the sunny seaside town. “THere is also a strong local base of applicants, first-time buyers and secondtime movers,” says Dominic Ruzyllo, of Fox & Sons. THe city recovered quickly from the dip after 2008, and has had big price rises since

then. “I can’t see a downturn because of the sheer demand – it’s buzzing,” says Ruzyllo. House prices increased by 10 per cent last year. Lewes, another South Downs star, has had consistent growth in prices, even when similar markets have lulled. It sits nestled in the South Downs, and is a smaller outlier among the stars outside London, which also include Bristol and Bath. With village life just an hour’s commute from London, Lewes has held up its house price growth more consistently than similar commuter belt towns and, crucially, is much cheaper: a comparable commuter area in Surrey, such as Waverley, has an average house price of £496,000, while Lewes is a far more affordable coming in with an average price of £319,000.

Have you got a spare £2k a month? How about renting this? RENTAL prices in central London are often scoffed at, and now a stunning home in Chichester is trying its best to keep up. THis period town house in Chichester centre – situated off East Street in the heart of the city – went up with rental team at Leaders this week for an eyewatering sum of £2,000 per month. Arranged over four floors, it is decorated in "tasteful style" with new carpets recently installed. THere is a basement area with a utility room and a study/snug/fifth bedroom with French doors to a courtyard outdoor space. On the ground floor level there is a superb kitchen, breakfast room and utility room, as well as a comfy sitting room. THere are two double bedrooms on the first floor which also boasts a bathroom. And on the second floor a further two double bedrooms and a bathroom also sit. THe property has enough space for a large family with a small but very pretty courtyard outside.

THe property retains many period features throughout the well decorated home and will ideally suit a family wanting a super period home in the city centre. It is located slap bang in the heart of our stunning cathedral city, which is shown in the estimation of monthly cost. Leaders have been established for more than 30 years and boasts to be a "name everyone can trust" for their housing needs. THey charge £275 plus VAT for referencing fees, set up and contribution for the tenancy agreement for one adult applicant. THere is an additional £75 plus VAT charged for each additional adult applicant. For more information visit www.leaders. co.uk DO YOU want to feature your property? ` Shakespeare’s Birthplace WALK in Shakespeare’s footsteps and explore the beautiful house where he was born and grew up, photographed below. Experience live theatre on demand, get up close to rare artefacts from the Trust’s world class collections and hear tales of Shakespeare’s family life.

f Anne Hathway's Cottage William Shakespeare was born in this house and grew up here with his parents and siblings. He also spent the first five years of his marriage living here with his wife Anne Hathaway. John and Mary Shakespeare were wealthy enough to own the largest house on Henley Street.

` Harvard House ONCE known as the Ancient House, the property was built by local businessman THomas Rogers in 1596; the year before William Shakespeare bought New Place. Rogers also served as Alderman for the

Stratford Corporation, alongside John Shakespeare, William’s father. THe elaborately carved front of the building is a clear statement of his wealth and social-standing. In 1909, the Ancient House in Stratfordupon-Avon was purchased by Edward Morris of Chicago and after extensive restoration, was given to Harvard University and became known as Harvard House. THe Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has been caring for the property on behalf of Harvard University since 1990.

` Kenilworth Castle THE vast medieaval fortress of Kenilworth Castle is one of the largest historic visitor attractions in the West Midlands, and one of the most spectacular castle ruins in England. Set in vast grounds in Warwickshire, Kenilworth is the perfect place for the whole family to go exploring and play king of the castle. Kenilworth is best known as the home of Robert Dudley, the great love of Queen Elizabeth I. Once boasting the finest architecture in Elizabethan England, you can still imagine the ornate palace Dudley created for his Queen in Kenilworth’s magnificent ruins today. THe authentically recreated Elizabethan Garden, an exhibition dedicated to Elizabeth’s visits to Kenilworth, and the castle’s very own costumed Queen promenading the grounds at events throughout the year, really brings this romantic royal story to life.

` Anne Hathaway’s Cottage ORIGINALLY a farmhouse built in 1463, this beautiful 500 year-old cottage is where Shakespeare courted his bride-to-be. Here you will be able to see original furniture including the Hathaway bed and uncover five centuries of stories in this picturesque cottage and 13 generations of the family who lived there. THe last Hathaway to own the cottage was Mary Baker, who sold the property to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in 1892. Her son, William Baker, still occupied part of the cottage and was allowed to live there rent-free for the rest of his life, assisting with custodian duties until his death in 1911.

` Anne Hathaway lived in the 12 room cottage above, when she was growing up before marrying Shakespeare.

The Steyne has kept its popularity over the years AS we look around our town today it can be quite difficult to ascertain when various areas were built, and in some areas it is even more difficult as building took place over a wide expanse of years. One such area is the Steyne. Named after an old English word, meaning stone and it is believed that Bognor copied the name from Brighton where they have the Old Steine, although with a different spelling. Following the demolition of two cottages near the sea front it was originally laid out in 1820. Within eight years, the town guide produced by ‘Dally’ described the

area as ‘containing some excellent lodging houses,’ and it was also considered to be ‘the pleasantest spot in Bognor.’ Not all the properties were built at one time, but the west side contains many of the older properties. THe major intention for the area was to provide good accommodation for visitors to this increasingly popular new seaside resort. Within 15 years the strip of land in front of the houses was known locally as Steyne Lawns and was to be conveyed to the Town Commissioners as a public walk, with the

stipulation no building should be erected on it. By the 1850s it was fashionable for a majority of seaside resorts, to develop open spaces, running inland from the sea, and the area to be flanked by ‘pleasant premises’. In the 1820’s there was also a market held in this vicinity, where stalls could be rented for 2s. (10p) per week. THese 20 stalls were to be the original Bognor market for the town. THe town’s first church was built in this area and St. John’s Chapel of Ease was to make the Steyne an important area. It was designed and built by Daniel Wonham in 1821, but unfortunately it was pulled down in 1891, just leaving the church tower as a navigation point for the fishermen. When the church was demolished there was uproar in the town. Many residents boycotted the St. John’s Church that had been erected in London Road. THe tower was finally demolished in 1962 to make way for a

SQUASH Club trio Richard Ragless, Derrick Longhurst and Buster Barton were crowned Division 1 champions after beating Hunston Hares in the Bognor Summer League Divisional Trebles Knockouts. THe Newtown Social Club semifinals saw Hares’ Graham Clear, Mark Sheppard and Andy Stubbs overcome Luke Forden, Dave Juniper and Chris Williams (QE2 Cobras). THe second semi-final saw last year’s Division 2 champions Ben Todd, Mark H Todd and Bradley Marshall (BRSA Ravens) lose to Squash Club. In the final, Stubbs took the first darts for the Hares, and his team started better with Sheppard scoring a 140. Ragless followed with 100 and then Hunston

struggled with three small scores, giving the Squash Club the lead. With 83 on the board, Longhurst could only leave 35 for his team mates. Stubbs needed 82 but missed double top for the win. Ragless then stepped up and in two darts took the first leg for the Squash Club. Once again the second leg was close. Longhurst was left with 130 and hit a treble and single 20 leaving him with 50 and one dart, but fell short. Ragless missed the double giving

Stubbs a chance at 96, but his last dart missed double 18. THen it was Barton's turn with 20 on the board, and in two darts the double was hit, taking the win. In the Division 2 showdown, Peter Hall, Derek Mitchell and Janet Ayres (Chi Snooker 'A') lost to Gary Bryant, Jason McVite and Tom O’Sullivan (Claremont Wanderers). THe second semi-final saw Dave Stone, Nathan Warren and Joe Osman (BRSA Wanderers) triumph over Bridgett

Derwojed, Tim McCarthy and Guy Watson (Friary ‘C’). Claremont won the battle of the Wanderers in the final in a close win over BRSA. THe Division 3k semi-final saw Emma Bist, Adam Judd and Michelle Skeites (the Station) get past a mixed team of Steve Reynolds (ASC), Len Dixey and Les Mullinger (Royal Oak). And the second semi-final saw Adam Hall, Ben Lubbe and Alex Richardson (the Station) edge out Rob Allen and Ashley and Debbie Clements (New Jacks). So, it was, in the words of David Bowie: Station to Station. And, yes, Station won. THe Bist, Judd and Skeites triumvirate, that is.

Inspired by Ali..he was the 'greatest' THE whole world stopped on the morning of June 4th to pay tribute to the most famous man in sport. THe greatest heavyweight of all time, Muhammad Ali, was rushed into hospital with respiratory problems and lost his last fight 24 hours later. I can only echo what the whole boxing community has said, in that he was nothing short of an inspiration to my personal development as a boxer. I doubt there is a fighter alive who hasn't watched an Ali clip and hasn't been influenced by him in some way. Ali inspired this once troubled kid to take education seriously. To read more, so as to be more articulate in conversation, like the great man was. Being a keen poet, it was also the admiration of Ali that developed my thick skin to the insults of my peers when reciting my poetry as a child. His defiance and showmanship has inspired not only sportsmen, but movie stars and entrepreneurs alike. Ironically, a man who fought for racial equality and peace for most of his life, he has brought together people from all ethnicities in mourning. In a time of religious tension, we see people from all walks, celebrating the life of a fiercely devout Muslim. His larger-than-life character just compliments his amazing story. Born in the racially segregated Louisville, Kentucky, Ali took up boxing as a means of learning to fight, in order to beat up the culprit who stole his bike. After a glittering amateur career culminating in Olympic Gold, Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, turned pro and won the heavyweight championship of the world against the feared Sonny Liston. I highlight this as my favourite Ali fight. Clay, 22, was probably the only man in the world who thought he would win. After stopping 'THe Bear' in six, he iconically screamed how he 'shook the world'. After a four-year exile from the ring, due to imprisonment for refusing induction into the US army for the Vietnam war because of his religious beliefs, Ali came back to fight the great Joe Frazier in the first of three epic battles. Losing to Frazier in the first encounter, the pair went at it twice more. THe third, 'the THriller in

Manilla' was one of the most brutal and gruelling fights in history. THe flamboyant champion fought in an era where the best fought the best and beat notable champions like the aforementioned Frazier and Liston. He beat Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers, Floyd Patterson, Ron Lyle, Bob Foster and our own Henry Cooper. All men who would have no problems beating any of today's 'alphabet' champions. His last great performance came in his historic win against George Foreman in 'the Rumble in the Jungle'. Ali used his 'rope a dope' tactic, soaking up Foreman's attacks, while on the ropes – to make the champion run out of steam. He capitalised on fatigue and KO'd him to take the title. I'd be lying if I said I agreed with all of his skulduggery. Some of his jibes to certain opponents may have been a little south of the border. But he did apologise for some verbal onslaughts. He cited the reason for the torment was that he felt a duty to sell any of his fights. You'd be pushed to find any great person without a nasty streak. Boxing wouldn't be where it is today without Ali, he elevated the sport to new levels. I maybe playing devil's advocate, and rattling a few cages in saying Ali's death may be more significant than John Lennon's or Bob Marley's, because he fought for life right to the death, apparent by the 30 plus years he battled Parkinson's disease in a publicly cheerful manner. With the amount of stars pouring their hearts out in tribute to 'the greatest', there's no way my words could do him justice. RIP to a real man, hero, conquerer, leader, oddsdefier and inspiration, not just to his fellow boxer, but to his fellow MAN.

by Robert Henry sport@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 BOGNOR’S Sam Adams‘ bowling proved too hot to handle for Pagham as the visitors slumped to 44 all out in this Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 2 encounter. In the local derby match, Bognor won by 140 runs, reaching 184 for eight from 53 overs, with Pagham replying with a sorry 44 for 10 off 19.2 overs. Bognor won the toss and elected to

bat and Jim Fallick top scored with 63, with Joe Ashmore enjoying a knock of 27 while Ryan Maskell hit 22. Pagham bowler Peter Cotterill recorded figures of six for 83, and there was some joy for THomas Kent who took two wickets, one of which – that of Harry Hood for three – he caught and bowled. THe visitors went into bat and Nikki Tabberer hit 11 before being bowled by Andrew Greig, caught by Joe Ashmore. THen is because the Adams show as he took three wickets for 21, all of which were caught and bowled – two by Maskell

and one by Max Ashmore. Andrew Greig then took the wicket of skipper Stuart Rutter, who was caught by Max Ashmore. Adams came back in to the picture with another four wickets for nought, with the wickets of Billy Turner-Hogg, Jake Stockdale, Michael Hales and Cotterill, caught by Max Ashmore. At the death, Adams had taken seven wickets for 15 runs, with three maidens, off 9.2 overs. Bognor collected 28 points for the win while Pagham picked up eight points.

PAGHAM boss Mark Bennett has missed out capturing two of his summer targets. THe Nyetimber Lane manager wanted to secure the services of former Lions striker Howard Neighbour and influential Horsham schemer Jim Shelley. But Neighbour has re-signed for Evo-Stik Southern League, Central Division Petersfield Town and Shelley has put pen to paper on a new deal with newly-promoted Horsham, who will play in the Ryman Division 1 South next season. Adam Robinson took four wickets, Keelan Belcher was one behind him and Josh Sergeant took two, while Ollie Smith took one. Adam Rutter hit 44 for Aldwick when they went ino bat and it was only Chris Redman who didn’t get on the score sheet after being LBW to the bowling of Keith Greenwood. I'd love to join Rocks, says Pompey ace Dan

f Picture: Ian Townsend

EXCLUSIVE By Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk PORTSMOUTH star Danny Hollands has admitted he would love to walk out at the Nye Camp and play for the Rocks. THe Fratton Park midfielder says he enjoys watching Bognor play the free-flowing brand of football insisted upon by management duo Jamie Howell and Darin Kilpatrick. And the Pompey enforcer, 30, who lives in Fontwell, says he hopes to one day be able to wear the green and white kit. He told the Post: “I’ve been down to Bognor to see them play a good few times and you have to admire the way they play the game. “No matter what level you play at, you always want to be in and around teams who play the right way and that is the case at Bognor. “I am 30 and would like to think I can play for another five years or so and if one day that means I can play for Bognor that'd be great.” Hollands, who is currently in plaster after an operation on his ankle, has watched as a string of players including the likes of Jason Prior and Craig Robson have quit the Rocks and signed more lucrative deals elsewhere. He added: "I understand the frustration of fans but in any other profession it's acceptable for someone to take a job in which they are rewarded more than the previous one. But I

think Bognor will bounce back. Footballers come and go but as long as they have the footballing philosophy in place they'll be fine, I am sure." Hollands has set his sights on signing a new deal at Pompey with his current contract set to expire. He said: "THe manager has said that he wants me to stay, there is an offer on the table and I am hoping to be able to put pen to paper very soon and concentrate on getting over my operation and then start to think about preparing for pre-season training." CHICHESTER City striker Jimmy Wild is chomping at the bit to make an impression with the Rocks. The Oaklands Park attacker has been handed the chance to team up with Jamie Howell’s men for pre-season training. It will give Nye Camp chief Howell and assistant Darin Kilpatrick the chance to run the rule over the forward. Wild was dual signed by Bognor in January but barely featured thereafter. But since then the Rocks have lost Jason Prior and Alfie Rutherford and are in need of boosting their firepower. Wild told the Post: “I am really relishing the challenge and hope to feature in some pre-season friendlies. “I am so looking forward to it. It should be a great experience and I hope I can make a good impression.” Wild will join fellow City player Jamie Horncastle at the Rocks on trial ahead of the new season.
