Safety work is demanded ACTION to save lives at a notorious Middleton junction is being demanded by hundreds of residents. THey are demanding safety work around Comet Corner before plans for more homes nearby are approved. County councillors who want to build the homes have been urged to carry out the improvements before the housing is built.
Middleton resident Hugh Coster, who is the deputy chairman of Bognor Regis Civic Society, said Comet Corner had become more dangerous since the A259 relief road was opened five months ago to cater for 20,000 vehicles a day. "At rush hour and other times, queues of cars wait to get on to the A259," said Mr Coster, pictured on page four, "and can't find a co-inciding gap between the
east and west flow of traffic. THis results in people taking chances by halfway crossing the road and being hugely exposed to vehicles rushing by. "It's inevitable that a serious accident will happen soon, bringing disaster to people's lives. "But it gets worse because West Sussex County Council are now set to make millions of pounds by seeking planning

STRONG objections have been raised by town councillors to squeezing Bognor Regis Post Office into a shared town centre shop. Town councillors queued up to condemn the plan by Post Office Ltd to shift the service into WH Smith, as revealed in the Post in May. THey said the quality of work expected by customers would be ruined if the move from the current High Street premises went ahead this November. Members of Bognor Regis Town Council's policy and resources committee was asked to comment at its meeting on Monday about the proposed change. Cllr Adam Cunard (I, Pevensey), its chairman, said: "One of the biggest concerns I have is that the shop is very small for disabled access and the layout of the store is going to be very difficult. Market Market traders traders gladglad to return to return to town to town again again by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11
TASTES from around Europe are on sale in Bognor Regis this week. THe town's latest speciality market has brought the range of lip-smacking food and enticing smells back to the London Road precinct. A total of 15 stalls are expected to line the pedestrianised area in the latest of the regular attractions to encourage more shoppers into the town centre and to spend more time and money when they are there. THe traders were hopeful they would get busier as the week progressed and the sun continued to shine after a wet opening day. Patrick Ajay was making his first visit with his churros stall selling the Spanish doughnut-style sweet treats. He said on Wednesday: "Yesterday was a quiet because of the rain. But I think it will be OK. "THere were still people about but they didn't stop because it was not nice. "I'm looking forward to seeing the sun. You need that when you eat churros because they remind you of Spain." Sue Symonds was back with her noodle stall for her fourth visit. "THis is a nice place to come to. I like the people here. THey are polite," she said. "I've only arrived this morning and I expect it will get busier by the weekend. It's been very busy every weekend I've
during the week. It's very good to see that." It was at the start of the year that Post Office bosses revealed the likely move. A petition started by councillor and business owner Paul Wells attracted some 3,000 names, shown on page one. But confirmation of the plan to go into the shop in the London Road precinct was given last week. THe Post Office will host a drop in customer forum to explain the changes. THe event will take place from 4.15pm7.30pm next THursday in the studio at the Regis Centre. Public consultations about the proposal run until September 14. Customers can take part by phone, online or post. Roger Gale, the general manager of the Post Office Crown Network, said: "We are committed to keeping our services at the heart of communities which we know is hugely important to people. "We need to make changes so that we can continue to do that into the future. "THe way customers do business with us has changed. People want flexible and convenient choices of how they access our services, whether that is face to face at our branches or on the web. "WH Smith already operates over 100 Post Office branches from their stores in the UK and we've been successfully working with them for nearly ten years. "THey have a proven record of running Post Office branches with consistently high levels of customer service." Opening hours of the proposed branch will be 9am-5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-2pm Sunday. THe total of 55 hours a week is some seven more than currently offered. Existing staff have the right to transfer their employment to WH Smith if they wish to do so. All options are being discussed with them individually. THe Post Office has been in its current High Street building since 1926. WH Smith moved into its premises in September 2014 from a larger building on the opposite side of the precinct.
Seafront fun days STORIES from a lighthouse kept children entertained on Bognor Regis seafront. THe Lighthouse Keeper, AKA Andy Coombes, was at the promenade bandstand regaling all ages with his tales of life keeping sailors safe. Several dozen children, and their parents, took the chance to listen to his escapades and details of his menagerie. THey could explore the interior of his mini-lighthouse as one of this year's Funshine Days being held by Bognor Regis Town Council. Andy, pictured above with Maia Nielsen, three, said: "THe children enjoy the little stories of myself as a lighthouse keeper. Every child knows what a lighthouse is. THey always understand what I'm talking about and enjoy making the tea in the lighthouse
and getting the biscuits ready. "THey like nothing more than going into a small space and enjoying themselves. THere's also stories to keep their parents amused." Andy was joined on the promenade's bandstand by Gary his budgie, Nigel the gnome, Lenny the lobster and Colin the crab. THe free Funshine Days continue today with a return of Monday's popular donkey rides from 11am-3pm. Next week's theme is performance and art. Monday sees a Beatrix Potter day followed by a hula hoop workshop on Tuesday. Wednesday's activity is Bubble Jo with a yoga workshop on THursday. All will be at the bandstand. Zaz the Clown will hold the Funshine Day next Friday in Hotham Park.

` Passengers warned about limited train service during strike TRAIN services to Bognor Regis are set to be severely reduced next week. Southern Railway officials were last night set to put into place a skeleton timetable from next Monday to Friday to cope with a five-day strike by conductors. THis is likely to see the only service running to and from the town's station as a slow train to Brighton via Littlehampton every half hour. THe first service will start about 7.30am and it will end about 6pm daily. THis will mirror the earlier timetable brought in during the initial batch of strikes in the long-running dispute with the RMT union. Angie Doll, the passenger service director of Southern's parent company, Govia THameslink Railway, said: "We are sorry that our passengers once again look set to suffer further disruption because of the RMT." Speaking before the strike, Bognor MP Nick Gibb said the disrupted train service was leading to a lot of moans from residents. "THe number of complaints I am getting is worse than at any time since I became MP in 1997. I've had scores of complaints so far. "If you are travelling to London every day, you are going to have problems with your journey," he said. THe industrial dispute has been sparked by Govia's intention to switch all its services to driver operated doors. THe company claims this will free conductors to better serve passengers. But the RMT union claims the change will cause safety problems and hamper the ability of disabled passengers to travel easily. THe row has been rumbling on for the past four months - and has seen numerous train cancellations because of staff shortages - but next week's strike will be an escalation. THe end of the strike will see the temporary revised timetable for weekday services resume on August 15.

` Councillor says Middleton could have proposals for 500 more homes COUNTY councillor Graham Jones has warned hundreds of homes could be built in Middleton. Cllr Jones said the county council had been asked by Arun District Council to see if it was prepared to enable 500 homes to be built on its land in the area. "I know it is fashionable to have a dig at the county council but, in this case, it is Arun who are the culprits looking to add 500 more houses in Middleton." Cllr Jones (I, Felpham) said it was widely known Arun was struggling to find enough land to overcome a shortfall of housing numbers in its strategic housing land availability assessment. "Arun have been looking at promoting all county land in Middleton as a strategic housing site, a possible 500 houses, and the county council are in early discussions with them about this. "Arun approached the county not the other way round - as they have a shortfall in their housing supply," he said. It would increase the land's value if it was added to the housing assessment. "What residents of Middleton have to consider is the impact on the infrastructure if 500 more houses are built in an area that has already taken a big hit in development," he said.

something sustainable. If you look at all the seaside resorts who have regenerated themselves, it's all been a culturally led regeneration," she said. Blake's time in Felpham from 1800-03 provided the Bognor Regis area with a unique chance to capitalise on that. Blake wrote the words which became the famous poem Jersulaem while he lived in Blake's Cottage. Ms Searle said: "THis is the only place he lived outside London and this is the only house of his which is in public ownership. It's a real asset which we need to promote." THe Blake links had interested the Tate Gallery, the University of Chichester and the Victoria and Albert Museum to show the national interest in him. She had worked hard in the past month to put a Blake-themed festival together but Arun District Council had ruled out holding it at West Park and Hotham Park. She said: "Gillian Brown (Arun's leader) didn't see the connection between regeneration and Blake." But the festival was still lined up to take place. THe town council's support would enable a larger event with a 5,000 capacity to take place and ensure ticket prices were kept down. Without the backing, it would have to be held in a smaller venue would mean prices were higher to restrict access. Committee member Cllr Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said the festival was worthy of the town council's support. "It is absolutely unbelievable that the leader of Arun would say of such an event she couldn't see the connection with economic regeneration. "It's another example of our town being sold short in its vision of regeneration from Arun," he said. Tickets £15 (£20 for families) are available from www.eventbrite.co.uk. Traditional Shaving and Hair Cutting in Bognor Regis
HandleHandle street street drinkers drinkers with sympathy, with sympathy, town town councillors councillors are urged are urged STREET drinkers in Bognor Regis are mentally ill people who need help, a town councillor has said. Cllr Jan Cosgrove attacked his fellow town councillors for being unwilling to back an idea to help those drink alcohol in people. He said the idea by the Hothamton Gardeners for a 'wet area' where the drinkers could congregate in a supervised area and be offered help could be answer to the problem. THe proposal by Arun District Council for a public spaces protection order would merely move the individuals out of sight and fail to solve the problem. But Cllr Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said many of those on the street were vulnerable and mentally ill individuals. "It is not the police's job to make their lives any harder than they already are," he told Monday's meeting of the town council's policy and resources committee. "THis is an ongoing issue. THere's no point in shoving it from one place to another. We need the sort of solution the gardeners have come up with. THese (drinkers) are mentally ill people. You can't apply the same standards to them as you do to other people." It was unacceptable and fascist talk to moralise about their lifestyle, he stated. But committee chairman Cllr Adam Cunard (I, Pevensey) said public drinking should be confined to pub gardens. "No-one wants to come to a town and see public drinking and anti-social behaviour in the parks and the town. If people don't want help, we have to find ways of dealing with it," he said. Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said he was sympathetic to those who found themselves drinking and sleeping rough. THat sympathy, however, was lessened when he saw them behaving without any thought to anyone else. THis included urinating against trees when mothers with young children walked past. He said: "THere are lots of groups in the town who do support and help these people. "Most of those I have spoken to who are street drinkers, they don't want help. THey have been offered help and somewhere to sleep and meals. But
they would rather sleep rough under the pier," he said. Cllr Jeanette Warr (LD, Hotham) said she was aware of two alcoholics who she had helped only for them to return to the streets when they were given some money "It makes me a little bit bitter, unfortunately, about the help we try to give them," she said. THe committee members agreed they would respond to the consultation, which lasts until September 11, with their individual views. THe public spaces protection order is intended to deal with a persistent or on-going nuisance identified in a particular location or area that is having a detrimental effect on the quality of life for those in the surrounding community. It will apply to all people within the defined geographical area for up to three years. A renewal is possible. Failure to comply with the order can result in a fine or fixed penalty notice. For Bognor Regis, the order will cover the town centre and its surrounding area. It will relate to tackling and reducing anti-social behaviour linked with street drinking. It would include the existing designated public places order, which restricts public drinking, and turn it into an alcohol control area. An Arun spokesman said: "Police and other authorised officers would have the power to confiscate alcohol where they believe it is causing, or is likely to cause, anti-social behaviour." Failure to transfer the current order will see it lapse in 2017 and the power to confiscate alcohol will be lost. Also included in the proposed protection order will be dispersal powers. THese will give the polcice and other authorised officers the power to disperse people causing, or who they think are likely to cause, anti-social behaviour. "THis will help mitigate against individuals and groups, whether engaged in specific behaviour such as drinking or begging, having a detrimental effect on local people and visitors within the identified area," said the Arun spokesman.
Pirates shivered their timbers and princesses dazzled in the holiday fun at country centre PIRATES and princesses took centre stage when at Aldingbourne Country Centre's latest holiday fun day. Dozens of children enjoyed mixing with the perenially popular characters on Tuesday. THere was plenty of walking the plank, with suitably wet endings, and glamorous outfits to keep everyone entertained. THe buccaneers and the beauties could be found around the centre on the special occasion held as one of a number of special activities which the centre off the A27 near Fontwell has arranged to provide plenty of summer enjoyment. THe centre's owner, the Aldingbourne Trust, began the fun with a bouncy castle spectacular last week. Yesterday saw the centre become a games zone. Visitors had the chance to take the staff and win a medal for their prowess with the consoles. An inflatable obstacle course, welly throwing, penalty shootout, space hopper races and sack races provided

plenty of more energetic fun. THe summer holidays sessions continue on Monday with a STEM Day (science, technology, engineering and maths) which is sure to go with a bang. A variety of experiments will be available for everyone to try with the help of Dr Phil Deniff. It's the turn of animal magic to cast its spell on visitors next Wednesday. THe popular Tom's Talking Reptiles will be present with a variety of reptiles and insects. Above the ground, Hawking About will be flying their collection of magnificent breds of prey. THe enjoyment continues next Friday with the Field of Fun Day. Giant slides, a go-kart party, zorb body balls and bouncy castles galore will keep young visitors active throughout the day. Many of the activities are repeated until the summer season ends on September 2. Charges apply to some of them as well as the usual admission charges to the centre.

EACH day sees 23 people in Sussex diagnosed with cancer, a new report reveals. THe document, Cancer: THen and Now, by Macmillan Cancer Support also details 11 people in the county die from the disease daily. THis will see Sussex's population of people living with cancer rise to some 108,300 by 2030. THe charity states people are twice as likely to survive at least ten years after being diagnosed than they were at the start of the 1970s. Gwyneth Tyler, Macmillan's head of services for the south east, said: "We know that thousands of people across Sussex are living with cancer. "But, while it is not always lifeending, it is life-changing. "We need to ensure that people who have had the disease, or who are living with it, have a good quality of life and tailored, appropriate support."
` Proposals for tyre fitting centre A TYRE fitting centre could open in Felpham. Extreme Tyres wants to move into an empty shop on Felpham Way. THe Worthing-based company has applied for planning approval from Arun District Council to change the use of the former grocery store to the fitting centre as well as the enlargement of the rear double doors at the premises in conjunction with the proposed use.
Friends' scheme launched to bring Butlin's into town centre by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 A NEW initiative aims to boost Bognor Regis through Butlin's. THe Friends of Butlin's project is intended to harness some of the spending power of the thousands of visitors who stay in the holiday resort. Guests will be able to receive discounts or take advantage of special offers in participating town centre shops. THe scheme has been launched by Bognor Regis Town Council with the support of Butlin's resort director, Jeremy
Pardey, who is promoting it on site. A total of 200 goody bags were quickly handed out at the launch at Butlin's Gloucester Road entrance last THursday. Sheila Green, the town council's projects and street scene support officer, said: " A survey of visitors to Butlin's showed they will walk along the seafront and then go back to the site. "What we really want is to encourage them to go into the town and support the local economy. "THe shops put the scheme's logo in their windows and, when someone from Butlin's goes in there wearing their wristband, they will be entitled to a special offer or a discount.
"THe promotion could vary from day to day or even during a day- and that will be up to the trader. It is very flexible." Between 20 and 30 businesses had signed up for the launch after community engagement worker Val Souchet had sought their interest. THey vary from a tattooist and a hairdresser to a craft shop. Mr Pardey had fully supported the Butlin's Friends idea, said Mrs Green, with a family pass to the site for each of the traders who had started the scheme. THe several thousand pounds of funding for the scheme came from the Locality budget provided by the government for ideas which support communities. THe same source also
helped to pay for the neighbourhood plan to set out the town's future planning. Holidaymakers at Butlin's who were given the goody bags backed the scheme. Jane Everett, 56, of Orpington in Kent, said: "It will bring more awareness of the area and will keep you from being too insular so you spread out and have a look around and find different places to enjoy." She was on her first visit to Bognor and had already been impressed by the friendly service she had received in a town centre shop. Sophie MacDuff, 24, also from Orpington, said: "THis will make sure you come out of Butlin's."

CONCERNED residents around Bognor Regis have been offered help to set up a flood action group. West Sussex County Council has issued an online 'how-to' guide so they can follow the work of West Felpham Flood Action Assembly. It was formed after the severe flooding of June 2012 and has received some of the £390,805 awarded through the council's Operation Watershed funding for ditch clearance work. Cllr John O'Brien, the council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "People think it is difficult to set up a flood action group - it is not. "With this website, we are trying to make it as easy as possible. "You can set up a group for your street, your neighbourhood or estate." THere are 23 flood action groups in the county. Up to £1,600 is available for each new group. Visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/ floodactiongroups for details.

Play Rangers provide smiles RAIN failed to stop play at the latest funfilled sessions in Aldwick. THe wet weather on Tuesday was no deterrent to the children who wanted to enjoy themselves at the Play Ranger events. THe traditional activities took place at West Park in the morning and Avisford Park recreation ground in the afternoon. THe morning session saw some 40 young people getting to grips with the over-sized inflatable equipment as well as getting creative with the arts and crafts materials. Jan Malpas, the chairman of the Friends of West Park, said: "It wasn't the best session because of the weather but there were still plenty of children who went along. "THe rain doesn't act as much of a deterrent for some of them who just want to enjoy themselves. "THe crafts activities take place under a gazebo so those who want to do that can just sit down there."
THe sessions are in their fifth year of being funded by Aldwick Parish Council. "THank goodness the council are continuing to pay for the events," said Jan. "THe sessions tick all the boxes. THey get the children out in the air enjoying themselves and using their imaginations and getting some exercise and their parents and carers can come along and have a chat with each other as well." THe first sessions of the summer holiday last week were packed as young and old took advantage of the sunny weather. Further sessions took place yesterday and will continue every Tuesday and THursday until August 25. THe West Park events are held from 10.30am-12.30pm and those at Avisford Park from 2.30-4.30pm. Jan said she would like other councils to fund similar sessions in their areas to enable more children to benefit from the holiday activities.

DISLIKED yellow paving in Bognor Regis town centre is to be replaced in the same colour. THe surfacing along much of Station Road's southern side, labelled the Yellow Brick Road, has attracted a lot of criticism said it was installed two months ago. It quickly became stained and marked and looked dirty to the anger of traders and shoppers. Arun District Council said this week the situation was unacceptable and the paving would be pulled up and a new layer put in. But the asphalt would remain colourd dark yellow colour. "THe pavement in Station Road forms part of the overall public realm design scheme for this area that was approved by the relevant authorities and the sandy colour forms an integral part of this design," she said. "THe council is, of course, disappointed that the newly-laid sandy coloured pavement was heavily stained with black marks as soon as it was laid. "THis is clearly not satisfactory, and was quickly investigated, and the contractor will be rectifying this before the end of the contract." But Paul Wells, whose shop is at the southern end of the some 400m-long stretch of paving, said he did not want the yellow colour to be repeated. "Now the works have progressed and the dark red paving on the opposite corner has been installed it would be good if this yellow paving could be changed to match that. "THe red looks nice. It is not such a nice colour and will hide the dark marks and stains better," he said. "On any paving where this a high
footfall, there are going to marks and stains but the yellow does not blend well. "It is not fitting with this part of the town either. THe red, however, looks really smart." THe paving is part of a £1.6m project funded by the government and led by Arun District Council among a series of public works to uplift the town centre. It will act as a link between the railway station and the upgraded London Road precinct and High Street leading on to the seafront. THe final elements of the Station Road makeover are being put in by the contractor. Other aspects have included creating wider pavements at Station Road's corners with Richmond Road and London Road and new benches. THe extended paving at the London Road/Station corner features the area of red asphalt which has equally quickly been praised. County councillor Graham Jones has also been among the leading critics of the yellow paving. He is the chairman of the highways and transport sub-committee set up by West Sussex County Council to enable the town's councillors to have their say about the subjects. Cllr Jones has also called for red paving to replace it and match the surfacing opposite. "I wrote to Arun on Tuesday afternoon about putting in yellow surfacing again. "I have seen the red paving on the other side of the road and that seems quite acceptable," he said. "It does not show up the dirt anything like as much. I have asked Arun why they can't use that material instead of the yellow. "Replacing the yellow gives them the opportunity to put the situation right. "If Arun put yellow down again, they will just be a laughing stock."

f An artist's drawing of the proposed Croft medical centre by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 THOUSANDS of patients are set to benefit from fresh plans for a new medical centre in Eastergate. Doctors in THe Croft Practice have applied for planning permission to build the facility to include a pharmacy and other related uses. THey intend to build it on an unused site off Barnham Road next to the existing surgery. THeir planning agent, Jonathan Best, said in a report: "THis existing facility is no longer fit for purpose. THe practice's list of patients has outgrown (the)
existing surgery's capacity." THe proposed two-storey building, with a single storey extension, will include 15 consulting rooms, two practice nurse rooms, a minor operations room and a treatment room as well as the pharmacy. It will be sited next to the housing in Cherry Tree Drive and Collins Close. Both were built within the past 30-40 years. THe current surgery was built in 1992 to serve a population of up to 6,500 residents. THe GPs applied to replace it in 2009 and received outline planning permission from Arun District Council early the next year. THis was renewed in February 2013 but it has never been acted upon. In a related matter, planning approval
was granted by Arun in February 2015 for 60 homes on land at the former Eastergate Fruit Farm immediately to the east of the latest proposed site. THe consultation into those dwellings saw the Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group, which is led by GPs and health professionals and buys hospital and community health services in its area, confirm it was aware of the Croft Practice's need for a purposebuilt medical centre and wanted a contribution from the developers towards the centre's cost. Funding is due to be confirmed this autumn subject to planning permission being granted. THe proposed building will be on about 4.5 acres immediately west of the exiting
centre. Its floorspace of the proposed building will be 1,249sq m - almost treble the current space. "THe existing surgery building is severely cramped with a floor area of only 300sq m, well below the recommended requirements for modern GP surgeries and this severely impacts upon service delivery for patients," stated Mr Best. "THe present surgery does not comply with the Disability Discrimination Act and any modifications would be severely limited due to the contours of the site and result in the further loss of working space for the practice. "Concerns have been expressed regarding car parking owing to vehicles parked on the pavement or adjacent on the grass verge."

WELL over 60 acts, six venues, two days and one aim - to keep Bognor Rox alive. Last weekend did just that. THe traditional big stage might have been missing but the alternative set-up of a series of smaller scale venues around the town well and truly ensured the spirit of the free music and arts festival survived. THousands went along during the packed programme of acts to show their support and appreciation of the live acts and the DJs who catered for every possible musical taste. Some festival-goers arrived in orange, yellow and blue branded Rox T-shirts from previous Rox events. Many greeted each other like old friends. THe joival atmosphere and comradeship from the many volunteers for this year and years gone by showed the hard work involved did not detract from the joy of staging the annual event last Saturday and Sunday. Melanie Skinner, 50, from Bognor Regis, said: "Organising an event like this one takes a lot of communication, both between organisers and artists. I work with very talented and passionate people to help pull this together and seeing everyone so keen to pitch in and come together really makes it worth it." Melanie was involved in the Secret Garden. THe 'festival within a festival' is usually hidden away on the outskirts of
the action. Well, it's secret no more. THis year saw its organisers provide a line-up for the main stage in Hotham Park. THe familiar scene of people sat on picnic blankets is always a guarantee at a Secret Garden stage. THis was nicely played out by the front of the stage again. People went along prepared with deckchairs for a nice relaxing day of jazz, blues and folk - all within a family atmosphere. THere was a mixture of original songwriting, always proudly introduced, and cover songs. THe audience needed little encouragement to clap along to any familiar songs. Another organiser, Trevor Liddle, 49, from Bognor Regis, said: "Bognor is a small, tight knit town, with a great music scene that many of us locals are really proud of. "One of the reasons I am involved in Rox is to showcase this to the wider community. It also gives an opportunity for all of us live music fans in the area to come together in a larger setting." As well as the music, the garden setting was buzzing with food stalls, arts and crafts, children's fairground rides, stilt walkers and a bar. One of the youngest performers, 14-year-old Bognor Regis resident Bella Estelle, has regularly attended previous Rox. She said performing had brought home how inclusive the event was. "THis is the biggest event I have played at, with the biggest audience," she said. "It was great to be so well supported, both by the crowd and the Rox team.

It meant I didn't feel as nervous as I could have done. People are here just to appreciate the music and arts for what they are, and I really like that." David Farnan has experienced Rox as a crowd member, volunteer and an artist. He played this year on guitar with co-artist Frank George III on the cajon. He said: "What I love about Rox is the opportunity it gives to up-and-coming artists. I supported Bella Estelle on stage this year. I am so proud to be part of that." Zoe Lancaster, 40, was back at Rox with her children. "I love the fact that Rox is held in Hotham Park this year," she said. "THe fact the Secret Garden stage was the main event this year makes it a great atmosphere for the kids."

Rox '17? Watch this space! NEXT year's Rox was a subject on many people's minds. What happens to the free music and arts festival next was a popular topic. But a Rox spokesman said: "Many people have asked us 'what will happen in 2017?' and the honest answer is that we simply don't know yet. We now need to get our thoughts together, after a well-earned
rest, and convene once more to discuss the options which will be done in our democratic way whereby the views of the majority will be supported by the remainder of the organisation." Rox fan Jon 'Beej' Alward said: "For me, this town is a seaside town and it makes sense to host it as close to the beach as possible."
ROX was all around Bognor Regis last weekend. THree pubs, a club and a bar joined forces to ensure there was plenty of indoor music to keep fans of the annual music and arts festival entertained. THe William Hardwicke, THe Claremont, Jacks Beer and Burger Joint and Legends answered the call from the Rox team to provide an alternative to the traditional outdoor large arena on the seafront. And their response paid off with a wideranging listing of DJs to provide hours of sounds as well as some live performances. Legends on the pier had Ed Goodale, Mike Fry and the FT, THe Neaps and THe Traits among its line-up for nine hours of enjoyment on the first day of Saturday. For William Hardwicke in the High Street, Saturday saw Ibiza Rox with Kev Dobbs and Friends as well as a Mud Club Reunion with a Prince tribute. THis featured DJs Harvey Bailey, Mark Allister and Luke Holden, Jamie Duffy Tee, with live percussion from Henri D Marks and Ruby Con. THe Claremont in Scott Street, off West Street, hosted DJ Nick Hills and a band between 6pm and 11pm. Jacks took the entertainment into London Road with DJs Brandon Pallett, Sam Pallett, Jacobs Towers, Jamie Knapp, Marc Baigent, Ryan Richards and McGoldie.
f The William Hardwicke was one of the venues for Bognor Rox THe music continued with boundless energy on Sunday as the William Hardwicke had a ten hour programme. Walking Dynamite, Crossut, Maximum High, THe Feel, Hot Rox and Glitter Bugs provided the entertainment. On the pier, Legends resounded to ska, funk, soul, reggae and beat music as its line-up of DJs supplied the eclectic mix of music. Paul Homer, Mark Howard, Eddie Stenner, Jamie McGreal, Lloyd Attrill and Mike De Courcey hit the desks with enthusiasm. Live music came from Sticky Rhythms, Beetroot Funk and Offbeat Offensive. At THe Claremont, DJ Terry Nicholas, the
Bamboo Calypso Band and Neil Ainsby kept music lovers entertained from 3pm-8.30pm. Jacks also hosted bands from 1pm into the night and the QEII in Waterloo Square was part of the weekend as well. Jason Gough, 31, a festival goer from the local area, said: "I've been coming to Rox on and off since I was 16. "I like that I can come to Hotham Park to watch music during the day and then there's a choice of music in so many of the local pubs. "Rox has taken many forms over the years. I would like to see it expand its current form more towards the beach."

Rox backers are thanked by Jade Skinner news@sussexpost.co.uk THANK you was the message from the Rox Crew this week to everyone who made the 2016 event such a success. THe unstinting efforts of the media partners, bands, acts, traders, partner venues and sponsors of Bognor Rox turned what could have been a disaster into a triumph. THe idea of using a range of smaller venues was a Plan B hatched just five months ago when it became clear the usual occasion of a large seafront stage was unrealistic because of funding cuts. A Rox spokesman said the weekend showed the 'Rox on' spirit could survive enforced alterations. "We didn't know if we could pull this one off or not. "But we committed to the project and it has to be said that we are very damn happy with the way things turned out. "Not only did we have to contend with depleted funding and some absent key players but there was also an unexpected date change from the regular Rox weekend," he said. None of that, though, diminished the

attraction of the free weekend. "Comments from the public who supported in their thousands all over the town have been extremely complimentary and encouraging," said the spokesman. "THere is some incredible talent in the Bognor Regis area and we hope that we were able to showcase some of these acts over the two days. "From the re-located Secret Garden in Hotham Park to the Concept Audio Stage in Legends, THe William Hardwicke, THe QE2, THe Claremont Inn and Jacks Beer and Burger Bar, the great majority of performers were local to our town which is a great testament - we salute you." THe one key constant in any Rox weekend was the gang of incredibly devoted and loyal volunteers who made it possible wherever it took place. THe spokesman added: "A massive thank you goes out to all of them on behalf of the Rox team,. "We would like to add our thanks to Kez Bridger and her colleagues from Bognorphenia for teaming up with the crew on this occasion, which could be the beginning of new ways going forward."

Carol is helped by the work of three charities
f Carol Powell with her new ramp
CHARITIES have combined to create much-needed improvements at the home of Rose Green resident Carol Powell. Carol is a multiple amputee after she suffered severe sepsis. THis caused her great difficulty in accessing the front door and stairs of her home. THe limited access also made it difficult for her to obtain funding for an outdoor mobility scooter to further improve her quality of life following her illness. Her situation led the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham to join forces with the Penguin Club and the Pagham Pram Race committee to fund the essential work. Rotary spokesman Brian Clarke said: "Overall, these much-needed property modifications will enable Carol to apply for the mobility scooter funding and together will help her enjoy a better and more satisfying quality of life. "In a coming together of local service groups, the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham funded a new and much wider front door with a low level paddle-type door handle suitable for wheelchair access. "THe Penguin Club funded an internal stairlift and the Pagham Pram Race funded a ramp to the front door to overcome the front doorstep problem." THe total cost of the work came to more than £1,000 with the groups paying varying amounts for their portion of the improvements.

MORE than half a century working in the NHS failed to stop Pat Bryden volunteering for the fete. Pat, 70, staffed the children's lucky dip as her enjoyment of the war memorial hospital continued. She said: "I've been very busy. People have been so generous and very supportive." She helps every week on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Friends' busy tea bar in the hospital. "It's just lovely here. THere's a lovely atmosphere and the staff and the patients are wonderful. "I also take the Friends' trolley around the wards with goods like tissues and chocolates. I really look forward to that because I love meeting the patients," she said. "I think people like the hospital because it's small and friendly. "I really look forward to coming in." Pat was one of those present with the longest connection with the NHS. Pat worked for 20 years in its X-ray department, after eight years as an administrative secretary in the hospital's offices, having worked in Chichester hospitals previously. She retired in June 2014 but was back helping out two days later to continue her lifelong connection with the health service.

Supporters help to make fete for hospital a major success
COFFEE morning regulars in West Meads have backed the Friends of Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital. THe 40 or so residents who meet for the social occasion each week have raised £600 for the charity. THeir cheque was presented to Brian Knight, the chairman of the Friends, at one of their latest meetings and is pictured left. Louisa Freezer, an organiser of the coffee mornings, said: "We have been running this coffee morning for eight years now and, to date, have raised over £8,300. "Our church, Aldwick Baptist Church, hires the hall for THursday mornings. "Six of us run them and we look for people in the area, particularly those living by themselves to be able to meet with others. "We have approximately 40 residents attending every week. We do not charge anything. People just give donations." THe coffee mornings are taking a summer break and will restart in the first week of September. THose who go along also benefit from occasional guest speakers to pass on information about what is happening in the area. THe previous visitors were the recycling team from Arun District Council. THe officers passed on a lot of information and held a quiz about the important topic. West Meads Hall is located in THe Precinct next to the Queens Field. THe donation is among those which help the Friends to support patients in the hospital and make their lives more comfortable than the funding available from the NHS can achieve. Mr Knight said the group was grateful for the backing from the coffee morning. THe Friends has always relied on support from community groups such as the coffee morning to raise donations to ensure the hospital is well equipped above the minimum standard set by the NHS.
f Plenty of prizes were on offer at the fete
A VARIETY of entertainers kept fetegoers at the hospital amused. THe singers and musicians provided toe-tapping songs and tunes for most of the afternoon. Proceedings were opened by the town's RAFA Skiffle Band for 30 minutes. THey later returned for another half-hour gig. Vocalist Terry Carvey performed some well known tunes before Stacey Turner took her turn at the microphone with some chart favourites. Background music was provided by Chichester Hospital Radio's Malcolm Gray while MC Erik-Jack kept proceedings flowing. Friends' chairman Brian Knight said: "We have had some good entertainment. We have got to have it to keep the crowds and we don't want the same entertainment every yesar, "We want to vary it so it is always something different. "I'm very happy with the way the fete has gone. THere have been several thousand people during the course of the afternoon.
"It's been busy and the rain at the start did not affect us. "THe 14 committee members of the Friends have been helping and I would say most of the wards and departments have been represented here. "We have not got any major projects planned. It's a case of seeing what comes up at her next meeting with the hospital." THe Friends, as reported last month, have donated a £60,000 ultrasound machine to the hospital's imaging department to add to its existing machine. Mr Knight showed town MP Nick Gibb around the department the day after the official opening. "It's an absolutely wonderful piece of equipment," he said. "THe member of staff pressed the scanner against her neck and we could see her artery and the blood within it. "She pressed a button and the blood was red and you could it being pumped around. It's the most modern piece of equipment in the country and we're proud to have donated it."

Profits will see a better hospital to serve town by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 GENEROUS residents have flocked to support Bognor Regis' hospital. A bumper turnout saw its latest fete raise a £3,500 profit to improve life for patients and staff at the war memorial hospital. A early downpour failed to dampen spirits as thousands of people again crowded on to the Shripney Road site to browse around its 25 stalls last Saturday afternoon. THey found plenty of bargains to buy from the popular plants such as busy lizzies, phormiums and blue salvias to cupcakes and coffee cakes, bric-a-brac and a lucky draw. THe barbecue was constantly busy and the cream teas sold out after 90 minutes. Anita Sturdey, the fundraiser for the hospital's Friends, said this year's profit was slightly up on 2015 to leave the charity delighted by the support. "THis is not only down to our very supportive community who turn up year after year but also a result of all the hard work everyone puts in to make the event a success. Every penny we take is profit and goes straight to the hospital," she said. "So we will make good use of everything we are given. "THe fete is the chance for the hospital to show itself at its best for the community. It allows people to see us and to show we are very much part of the town." Newly-appointed Don Baines ward manager Elaine Cooke has worked at the hospital for 30 years and was busy on the cake stall. "THe Friends provide tremendous support for the ward. THey help us to achieve things we might not otherwise be able to achieve," she said.
TWO prominent fundraisers for the hospital are remembered in its wards. Don Baines and Lesley Smith epitomised the community endeavours which have supported the hospital through the decades. THey held leading roles with the Friends and the hospital authorities recognised that some 20 years ago by naming the two inpatient wards after them. THe wards each have 24 beds for rehabilitation. THere is a renal dialysis unit at the hospital and a hydrotherapy pool. Both treats patients from the surrounding area as well as Bognor Regis. A busy minor injuries unit and an imaging department are among the other services available on the Shripney Road site. THe hospital's community ethos dates back to its foundation. At a time of private health care, Bognor's residents worked hard after the First World War to ensure it was available in their town rather than having to travel to Chichester. If the NHS buys one item, the Friends will add another one or two so we have always got some spare. "Everyone loves the fete. It's a community feeling and it's a chance to meet up with people who work at the hospital who you might not normally see much." Elaine started her job on Sunday after having been promoted from ward sister. Imaging manager Kim Harding said: "THe fete is a really good way of supporting the hospital and getting money for the Friends. "People have really supported it this year, which is really encouraging and we are very
Cinema saw the first night's proceeds donated to the cause. THis enabled Springfield House on Chichester Road to be opened on July 16, 1919, as a voluntary hospital. It only had eight beds but was soon in demand as the town's population grew. Bognor's popularity as a holiday town grew after the 1929 visit of King George V and this extra potential demand on the hospital worried its committee. Two years later, and Lord Leconfield JP, the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, laid the foundation of a new hospital. THe war memorial hospital formally opened on September 24, 1932, with 29 beds, an X-ray department, outpatients and offices. Its hall contained a display of the names of the 324 men from the town who died in the war and it was dedicated to their memory and the restoration of King George V to good health in the town. THe roll of honour remains in a central place in the hospital's main corridor. Further expansions took place in 1952 and 1991 to form the current buildings.
grateful. It's a good opportunity for people to see us working together. It's good for them to see us here." THe community feeling of the event was shown by the support given by four cadets from the town's Air Trading Corps. THeir Sergeant, David Colgate, said: "We put the stalls up last night and we will be taking them down again tonight as well as move equipment. "It's good for the cadets to get involved with the community, helps their working within the ATC and it raises awareness of us." Friends chairman Brian Knight said: "THe cadets have done more for us this year than ever before. We would struggle without them."
HOSPITAL supporters Betty Cox and Josephine Stanley enjoyed their day out at the fete. Town centre resident Betty has been a regular for some 20 years. Josephine, who lives on West Meads, was there for her first visit. Betty said: "I want to support the hospital because it's important as the hospital was going to close at one time. "I don't go to many fetes but I always make a point of coming to this one. "Bognor needs a hospital. Not everyone can get to Chichester."
f Invaluable help came from these air cadets
Josephine said: "I'm glad I've come. If we want to keep our local hospital open, we should support it. "We've come to listen to the music and look around the stalls - and we've both won a prize. "I certainly want to try and support this in the future. "I've been an outpatient here and you are definitely well looked after in this hospital." THe fete boasted a prize draw as well as a tombola and lucky dips. THere was also the chance for one lucky visitor to win a car if they rolled seven sixes in a row with a single dice.
NEXT year will be the 65th anniversary of the Friends of Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital. THe charity's biggest contribution to the site remains the £500,000 it gave to create a refurbished rhematology ward on its golden jubilee in 2002. THe Friends were formed by Bognor Rotary Club and originally known as the Friends of Bognor and Aldingbourne Hospitals. Recent years have seen the Friends donate an average of £100,000 a year towards equipment to improve the lives of the hospital's patients. Projects supported in the past ten years or so have included a renal dialysis unit, equipment for an eye clinic, an electronic bath hoist and a modern defibrillator. As reported, last month saw the Friends donate a £60,000 ultrasound machine to the Sussex Foundation Community NHS Trust which runs the hospital. THis added a second ultrasound machine to the hospital's imaging department to go alongside a new X-ray machine. Richard Curtin, the trust's chief operating officer, said at the official opening of the new equipment: "THis is great for the local community of Bognor Regis, for the hospital and for our staff. "Having access to the latest equipment will enable us to provide better diagnostics and care." Brian Knight, who chairs the Friends, said: "We are delighted to support improvements at the diagnostic unit. "THese two new pieces of diagnostic equipment are indeed an asset to Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital and will serve the local population well for many years to come." THe diagnostic imaging department carries out 1,500-1,700 X-rays a month and some 350 ultrasound scans. Its three sonographers carry out the highest number of plain X-rays per head in England.

Chichester, Portsmouth and Worthing are just some of the local locations with some of the highest number of the sales and already grossing in six figures, this latest novel of the franchise is prominent to become the best-selling book of the year. As is stands, thousands of local diehards were left fulfilled as they entered the bookshop empty handed but left with that they considered ‘THe Holy Grail of Books’ so Rowling has spell bound us again and sadly for the final time… or could we just receive another surprise again? “Mischief Managed”

Once they arrive on the island, however, Mike and Dave realise that their companions are ready to get wild and party hard.
Disney Pixar's Finding Dory finds Dory living happily in the reef with Marlin and Nemo about a year after their life-changing adventure. When Dory suddenly remembers that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, she recruits Marlin and Nemo for another adventure across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute (MLI), a rehabilitation centre and aquarium. In the effort to find her mum and dad, Dory enlists the help of three of the MLI’s most intriguing residents!

A HIGH profile missing person has been in the press this week and a few totally unknown missing cases also circulated on Facebook and other social media. So I thought I would throw interesting facts and thoughts in the pot on this subject. THe issue of missing is hugely complex. People in very different situations – from a child abducted by force to an adult who chooses to leave the family home – may all be labelled as ‘missing’. Defining what it means to go missing seems to help services provide more appropriately for those left behind. People go missing for a wide variety of reasons, which makes providing a single, concise definition of a ‘missing person’ or what it is to ‘go missing’ very difficult. Of course there are always two sides to the story and certainly some people do not want to be found. An individual may simply consider themselves to have started a new life elsewhere, or to have left a situation which they may have seen as negative or dangerous. Yet they can become the centre of a campaign to find them. It is always amazing how powerful social media is when it is needed to circulate information widely. However, in the case of missing people sometimes they may be being shared by well meaning family members and then the emotive stories touch people who then share. However, the one-sided view shadows the story behind when it may be a situation which should not be shared. Maybe this is a sad side of today’s social media but with potential for real fear as the person who is trying to be missing can be identified (and indeed reported) by the general public. Sometimes it can be connected to forms of harassment or the control of a person. Looking at the stats: In Sussex last year, there were 10,405 reported cases of missing. For missing people – a charity report states that studies show around two-thirds of people who go missing are below the age of 18. Children and young people between the ages of 12 and 17 are the most likely to go missing. Overall, roughly equal numbers of males and females go missing. However, in teenagers, there are substantially more cases of females going missing than males whereas in adults, males go missing more often than females. THis, of course, is shocking that two thirds of reported missing - so 6,936 - are under 18. I guess for those of us working in the community at grassroots level we know that there is often a personal story behind the scenes and keeping an open mind needs to be the first thought before any action. Check out: https://www.missingpeople.org.uk for searching for lost family, for information, advice and support.

FRUSTRATED passengers at Bognor Regis railway station can at least enjoy looking at the handiwork of gifted photoraphers. Middleton Camera Club is staging a series of temporary exhibitions in distinctive bow window of the station's former cafe. Subjects of their focus have included wildlife and portraiture and local scenes. One of the recent two weekly displays featured 18 works by five photographers. Pictured above are left to right: John Yates, Lyn Phillips, Rita English and Dick Saunders. Trevor Staff, the club's vicechairman, took the photo. He said: "THe photographs brighten up the windows of the cafe which would, otherwise, look pretty boring. "We had a display in Felpham village in an empty shop for a while and that went well and we wanted to see if the cafe would do as well. "It seems to have worked. A lot of people are looking at it. "We have also had a lot more

traffic on our website. It has increased by 100 per cent since we started the displays. "THe members taking part love it. it's nice to get some feedback." Trevor has owned a chiropodist's business on the station forecourt for 30 years and the station manager, Howard Clear, soon agreed to his suggestion for the cafe. THe window is available for as long as the premises are unwanted by Southern Railway for any other purpose. THe camera club was formed in 1962 and prides itself on being a small and friendly club with some 50 members. Its meetings are held every fortnight on Mondays at the Jubilee Hall in Middleton. THe new season starts next month. Friendly competitions are held between the members and speakers visit to pass on advice about specialist topics. Further details about the club are available on its website www.middletoncameraclub. weebly.com
A spokeswoman for the charity said: "In a boutique style, the shop stands out from the rest as being good quality, friendly, spacious and upmarket. "Dogs, of course, are welcome to bring their owners in and donations can be accepted by driving up the driveway from Belmont Street at the rear of the shop and ringing the bell at the back door." THe shop is open 9.30am4.30pm on six days a week and 10am-4pm on Sundays.
Dear Editor Chichester bypass has a problem -Traffic Congestion! Statement: obvious – Solution: difficult – New bypasses to north and south: rejected - Current Proposals: not fit for purpose – Alternative Proposal: please read on…. Built decades ago, our overloaded bypass finds it hard to cope with two main types of traffic in conflict with each other. Local traffic crossing and running along the by-pass fights for priority with the long-distance traffic which just wants to get past Chichester as fast and as safely as it can. So we need a solution which separates them. The options put forward by Highways England (HE) earlier in the year addressed that very problem by proposing to re-route long-distance traffic to a new by-pass, to the north or south of the city. While these options made eminent sense from a traffic viewpoint, I wholeheartedly agree with those who campaigned vigorously against those proposed routes. We should not destroy our beautiful countryside to solve what is essentially an urban problem. THe HE options now on offer do little more than tinker with the issues. THey fall short of providing an acceptable solution because: 1. Local traffic and long distance traffic will continue to share the sections between the “improved” junctions, with merging and demerging disrupting the smooth flow of traffic 2. THe HE proposals offer nothing to the north and east of Bognor Road, other than acknowledging the removal of the signals at Oving Road. More thought will have to be given here as it is fruitless to improve the Fishbourne-Bognor Road section only to find a bottleneck is created between Bognor Road and Westhampnett. 3. THe proposals are only palliative and are unlikely to provide a long-term solution, probably needing to be upgraded (with additional cost) by the time these measures are in place. 4. they constrain local traffic movements at some of the main junctions similar to those proposed some years ago, which were regarded as completely uncaccepable 5. additional rural land would be needed for the relief road proposed in option 2 (a rural solution to an urban problem - bad news!)
A new bypass for through traffic to the north or south is not acceptable, so what can we do to remove the conflict between local and long-distance traffic? My suggestion may appear radical but it: • Segregates local traffic completely from A27 long-distance traffic; • Takes no extra land between Fishbourne and Bognor Road roundabouts; • Maintains all the junctions on the existing bypass in the same form as they are now; and • Will last for many more years than the HE proposals now being discussed. Instead of attempting to move the trunk road traffic laterally (to north or south), I suggest it should be moved vertically to a new A27 on a high-level dual-carriageway running from Fishbourne roundabout to Bognor Road roundabout over the existing bypass. THe new road would be no higher than the fly-overs proposed in some of HE’s options, and such a road would provide a solution as to how to segregate local trips from long-distance journeys. Craigweil House was a home fit for a King

f Craigweil House
Job vacancies Bognor Regis Town Council Civic and Office Manager £26,556 per annum The Town Council is looking to recruit a Civic and Office Manager, working 37 hours per week at the Town Hall in Bognor Regis.
Craigweil House at the disposal of the Royal family. THe house at Aldwick had been built at the beginning of the 19th century and was described as being a ‘substantial mansion in the Elizabethan style, with balconies and terraces looking directly over Aldwick Bay. THe house had been extended by Sir Arthur Du Cros turning the three storey mansion into a special building, with terraces, two wings, eight suites and rooms for 20 servants. THere was a music room with a cinema, stage and an electric organ, the music of which could be piped all over the house. He also had seawater laid on to all the bedrooms.
Experience of managing a team of staff is required together with the ability to be an excellent communicator with a positive “can do” attitude.
The weather turned cold soon after the King arrived and it snowed heavily
f King George V
Change your career... Change your life!
The role also includes the overseeing of the organisation and delivery of Civic services and receptions. Excellent benefits package, competitive salary & membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme included.
THe lawns swept down to the beach with 200 yards of private promenade. THe house, which stood within its own grounds, covered 15 acres and was half a mile from the main road. However, the weather turned colder six days after the King's arrival and the grounds were soon under several inches of snow, which remained for a further three weeks. For the town of Bognor, this visit encouraged all the hoteliers and traders to prepare for an influx of visitors. Even the local telephone exchange had to become prepared as they reserved 42 lines exclusively for the use of Craigweil House. Local charabanc companies were soon advertising trips to catch a glimpse of the house and maybe even the Queen. So much was the interest in the royal visitors that, at one time, there was a reward offered of £500 for any photograph taken when Queen Mary visited Woolworth’s. I am not aware of such a
picture from this visit. But a photograph was taken in the April when Queen Mary visited the Burgess Bazaar in Waterloo Square. When King George V returned to Windsor, Sir Arthur handed Craigweil House over to Bognor Town Council for 12 days for the public to visit. During this period 15,827 people roamed throughout the house, adults paid 1/- (5p) and 6d (2 1/2p) for children raising £754.17s.6d for local charities. People visited the King’s bedroom, sat in his chair and viewed the sandcastle built by his granddaughter - the present Queen - in the grounds. Following all the euphoria of the nation regarding the King’s return to health, postcards featuring the royal couple as well as the house. So residents were astonised in 1932 when news broke of its sale. Plans to turn it into a hotel or residential home failed and it had been demolished by 1938.

Large mansion helped the monarch to recover from illness
IT was 87 years ago that the perspective of our small seaside resort on the south coast was to change forever. In 1929 King George V came to the area to recuperate after a serious illness. THere is frequently much talk of his visit thus here are some of the details. King George and Queen Mary arrived on February 9, 1929, and eventually left on May 15, 1929, a period of only 13 weeks that was to have many implications for the future and which led to “Regis” being bestowed on July 26, 1929, in recognition of the visit. Bennett's Pagham bid to get one over on Town in FA Cup by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk MARK Bennett takes Pagham to the home of his former club Littlehampton Town on Sunday for a mouth-watering clash in the FA Cup. And the Lions boss says he will remind his charges of the importance and prestige of the competition before they go in to the extrapreliminary round encounter at the Sportsfield. Bennett, along with No.2 Richie Hellen, (pictured, right) has shaped his squad to his liking with several new recruits ahead of his first full season at the helm at the Nyetimber Lane club after he took over from Jon Tucker, now boss at Wick, last season. Bennet, who represented the Marigolds as a player and as a manager, said: “If I am honest it’s always been a bit of a nightmare facing Littlehampton when I have gone back but it’s the FA Cup and it is a game that we all definitely want to win and will be doing our collective
best to achieve that on the day We all know that the FA Cup is a great competition and we want to progress in the competition as much as we can. I am looking forward to it.” Meanwhile, Bosham manager Andy Probee has told the club's website of his delight in securing the signatures of forward duo Marco Giambelardini and Ryan Hillier. Giambelardini put pen to paper for

the Walton Lane side despite preseason interest from Arundel, scoring a hat-trick for the Mullets in a friendly at AFC Petersfield. Probee said: "I'm delighted Marco has shown his commitment to us off the back of a tremendous season. He's a player whose skill and ability causes defenders problems, and we are happy to have him with us." Giambelardini, 26, was virtually ever-present last season and bagged 11 goals, including the Division 2 Cup final opener against league champions AFC Varndeans to help the Robins win the trophy for a fourth time. THe Robins' boss also heaped praise on Hillier, 23, who was playing West Sussex League football for Fittleworth for a large part of last season, before returning and playing a crucial role in the cup victory. He added: "Ryan will be a massive asset to the club this year. His pace and work rate in the (Division 2) cup final were phenomenal. He always creates chances and I'm sure that he'll be in double figures this season."

Whyte fury at Lions...Murfin in blast at 'arrogant' Rocks by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk THE future of Pagham-Bognor “friendly” matches will come under scrutiny after a heated affair at Nyetimber Lane. And there was a furious post-match reaction from players involved in the bruising encounter. Jamie Howell’s Rocks won with a convincing 4-0 triumph but it came at a cost with Harvey Whyte (pictured) having to hobble away from the action on crutches after suffering a knee injury. He went to hospital to have his injury assessed and the fear is that it maye be a long spell on the sidelines. THere was one particular heated onpitch bust-up involving a melee of
f Andy Chant
players in the first half. And Whyte took to T witter to vent his anger at his thoughts on the reaction of the Pagham coaching staff. He tweeted sarcastically: “Nice to see the Pagham bench wish me well as I went passed on crutches”, followed by an expletive. And Lions striker Scott Murfin was quick to take to the social media platform to make his opinions clear following the match. He said: “I have never played against
more arrogant ****** than Bognor Regis FC, the club r a disgrace...hope u get relegated”, again concluded with some colourful language. One school of thought is that Bognor may take on Wick next year in a warm-up match. THe Crabtree Park outfit are managed by Jon Tucker, a former Bognor player. On the pitch, Rocks took the honours with goals from impressive trialist Walter Figuero, a winger who represented Chelsea under-21s before
playing in Greece, Ollie Pearce, Jimmy Wild and James Fraser. Meanwhile, Dennis Barclay is stepping down as manager of Unicorn United. THe pub side has been going three years and Barclay said: "I'm becoming the director of football and decided to get someone else to take over coaching duties and run the team. "Old and new players are welcome to join us as we want to have a good crack at winning silverware. "Chairman David Phillips is putting a lot into the club and we want to justify his support on and off the pitch. THe social side to the team is second to none.' Potential managers and players should ring Dennis Barclay on 07735954295 or Justin Jennings on 07539504843.

But despite these defeats Griffin still believes they can do something special this season. He said: “We’ve tried to test ourselves so far and all the games apart from the Worthing Borough one have been against County League opposition, and if we can perform like we did at Selsey last week we will definitely be up there come May but we will see." Griffin has significantly bolstered his squad this summer with the arrivals of Dean Bennett (Predators), Sean Maskell (Pagham), Del Chester (Newtown)
and Aaron Millar (from injury), and he is still hoping to add more He added: “I’ve hopefully got a couple more signing. I want to make sure the squad is strong as it can be. We're not here to make up the numbers. Our aim is to go for the title and you can’t do that with a weak squad.” It’s not just the first team at Pirate Park hoping for a successful season. Reserve manager Jamie Walter has also added a number of new faces to his squad and he’s hopeful they can improve on last season's fifth place. He said: “It was our first year as reserves and we didn’t gel until after Christmas but it was too late to push on. I’ve got new lads signing and hope we start well." THe Pirates continue pre-season when they take on Pagham U21s at Nyetimber Lane tonight (Friday), 7pm kick-off.

Aldwick’s Adam Robinson, Dan Robinson, Josh Sargeant and Harry Rosser did the business with the ball, taking wickets before the home side went into bat. Alex Cooper enjoyed a knock of 34, while Adam Robinson made 33, and this helped ebulient Aldwick 140 for 3 (18.3 overs) to give them a seven
wicket victory. Eastergate gave it their best shot. Cooper’s wicket fell to Jamie Murphy with Nick Smith catching, while the same player bowled Robinson and this time Jack Standard was safe with his hands. Ryan Purvis was run out by Andrew Smith but it was the home side that prevailed. Can they now get to finals day? ROBERT HENRY

Harvey a smash but can't inspire victory
THE future bright. The future is green, white and purple if the skills on show last week at the London Irish training camp at Bognor RFC were anything to go by. Youngsters of all ages and ability gathered at the club's Hampshire Avenue HQ (pictured) to be put through their paces by the coaches from London Irish in a two-day summer camp. And despite a lot of fun being had, there was a serious side to the event, aimed to harness potential for the betterment of the club as they aim to bring youngtsers through the ranks.
BRFC juniors certainly played a massive part in last season’s accomplishments for the club. The under-15s were promoted, whilst two players progressed to county honours and a Quins Academy admission and the London Irish Community staff would took time to congratulate Max Molyneaux and Jack Ryder on their achievements. The club saw a 30 per cent increase of new youth and mini participation as a result of the World Cup and the club’s dedication in providing many rugby opportunities for the youngsters in their surrounding areas. It all certainly bodes well for the future. *Want to see your young stars featured? Email us.

sell 100 tickets on local shows, with promoters giving you a match you would be expected to win. THis wouldn't have suited me though as there are not enough local pro shows to earn a steady income throughout the year. I'm proud though that I have made my way in the hardest game in the world by fighting some of our countries best boxers on their way up. Getting the call to fight on a Matchroom promoted show furthermore proves I am capable of giving a test to any prospect. I have to say that of another great experience, I was mostly humbled by the amount of support I received. After posting a video of the day before weigh-in on social media, I was blown away by the amount of good wishes I got. People from my amazing community came together in showing me a tremendous gesture of goodwill by posting good luck messages. Fighting on the road in front of opposing hostile crowds, I'm not used to such adulation. It made me feel ten feet tall. If sold as many tickets as I got likes, comments and shares on Facebook, I'd be undefeated! *My picture shows me with Eddie Hearn from Matchroom.

IT was another busy season for me on the circuit and it reached its climax with a fight on the Sky Sports show under the biggest promotional banner in the country, Matchroom boxing. A two-day all inclusive trip up to Leeds, courtesy of Britain's leading promoter Eddie Hearn, ended in a points loss for me against the unbeaten Hull hopeful, Conor Seymour. Seymour, now unbeaten in seven, edged out our contest on his fitness and work rate so there's no complaints on my part regarding the decision. It may have been a different outcome had I been in better condition. Without sounding like I'm reeling off excuses, it's true that I wasn't in full training when taking the fight, having thought that I had already fought my last fight of the season. I was originally booked to MC the VK White collar show at the Arun Leisure Centre on Saturday. But 10 days out from the show, my manager and long-time friend Michael Ballingall phoned me with the news that we had been offered the Seymour fight on the Josh Warrington undercard, televised on Sky Sports. On turning pro five years ago I just wanted to earn money. THe only way to do this in the pro game is to fight regularly, away from home against up-and-coming, unbeaten fighters, in front of their home crowds. THis often means taking fights on short notice and being on the wrong end of some bad decisions, when a close fight goes in favour of the local ticket seller. THey call my type of fighter a journeyman. A boxer who has adequate skill but is not of the caliber of a contender. In respects us journeyman get used to further the careers of the prospects with title laden futures ahead of them. It's not the most glamorous side of boxing. But it has taken me to places I would have never been before and opened up other opportunities I would have never enjoyed if I wasn't fighting. It would all be different if I could

INSIDE: Boxer Liam Griffiths tells all about his Sky TV bout
Whyte Rocks crock shock by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk ROCKS ace Harvey Whyte could be sidelined for up to six months with a knee injury, boss Jamie Howell fears. It leaves Bognor short of numbers with the Ryman Prenier League campaign looming after a clutch of players moved on in the summer. Crocked Whyte hobbled away from Nyetimber Lane on crutches last week after being forced out of the action in a 4-0 friendly defeat of Pagham. Howell said: "THe swelling hasn't gone down yet so we can't assess it properly but we think anything between two and six months. We'll just have to wait and see." But there was some good news for

the Nye Camp chief with the one-month loan capture of Brighton U23 left-back Dylan Barnett. Howell is hopeful that he can secure the services of keeper Billy Grainger, who is being eyed by Premier League Crystal Palace. If the Eagles sign Grainger they may well loan him to the Rocks. Bognor open their league campaign at home to Lowestoft on August 13 and Howell says he is happy with his strikeforce of Ollie Pearce and Jimmy Wild, a capture from Chichester City. He added: "THe keeper is concerning and I may have to go to a professional club and get a player on loan. But I am relatively happy with who we have and there is still time to bring in others." *Rocks shirt sponsors for next season is CSL Ltd, drawn on Wednesday night.
