Diocese to appoint LBGT liason officer says Bishop Warner by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk THE Diocese of Chichester will appoint a LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) liaison officer, it has emerged. THe Bishop of Chichester, THe Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner, is reported to have made the announcement at a dinner at St Michael's Church, Brighton, last month. THe dinner is said to have been organised by the Diocese of Chichester, which serves East and West Sussex, with invitations to representatives from LGBT organisations of all faiths across the city and among others, Peter Kyle, the MP for Hove and Portslade. THe dinner was arranged to establish a dialogue with the city’s LGBT communities and the Bishop used the opportunity to announce the creation of the new post of LGBT liaison officer for the Diocese, it is reported. Gscene, a Brighton-based website for the gay community, reported that the Bishop’s opening words set the tone for evening when he asked the question: “Why are we here? It’s all about love not structures”. He is said to have went on to make a case for building trust, understanding and love for each other, maintaining it was better to sit down and talk rather than just follow the rules, claims the website. He added: “My view is that LGBT people are part of the Church and I
believe their presence enriches every Diocese and everyone has by right a place. "It is my hope that the Church as an institution must never present ourselves as implacable. Incapable of recognising tenderness and love. I am privileged to be taking food with you.” Despite requests, Dr Warner didn't respond to the Post to offer clarification on the report. Dr Warner addressed the Annual Conference of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM) in 2013 and said then that the Diocese of Chichester values the LGBT community in its midst and that LGBT people have enriched the life of the Church and area. He said then he was not in favour of gay marriage on theological grounds but he felt the Church needed to find ways to honour gay relationships.
Post CAPTAIN Nick Cooke-Priest, of HMS Bulwark, was on hand at Great Ballard School for the annual speech day. Cooke-Priest is a former pupil of the school from the Eighties, and he took up the invitation to speak to pupils, parents, teachers and staff. He also presented prizes to pupils for sporting, academic achievements.

New app free to carers and will help them juggle manay tasks WEST Sussex residents who care for relatives, partners or friends can now access free digital resources to help them juggle tasks. Carers guides, e-learning tools and details of nearby information and support are all available, as well as the "Jointly" app – created by the charity Carers UK. Jointly enables users to set up circles of care, where all those involved in someone’s care can share information and messages between them. Carers who sign up can also set appointments, allocate tasks, save files and manage medication. Helping them to organise their
workload and communicate with others sharing care responsibilities, the app normally costs £2.99 but is free for West Sussex residents when they register for the online tools and use the promotional code DGTL2948. West Sussex County Council’s Peter Catchpole, said: “We already use technology in so many ways so it makes perfect sense that it can make a difference when caring for someone. “I hope carers across West Sussex will take this chance to check out the app for free and see what benefits it could have for them.” For more information and to register, visit www.carersdigital.org.
Why city's tops for super summer tourist hotspots! by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER is top of the hotspots when it comes to places to visit in the county during the summer. THe city boasts five out of leading top ten things to do in West Sussex over the holidays, according to the world’s largest travel site, TripAdvisor. Chichester Cathedral comes in second place behind Arundel Castle in the list, with Tangmere Military Aviation Museum in fourth place followed by Weald and Downland Open Air Museum and Chichester Festival THeatre in fifth and six positions, then Bishop's Palace Gardens comes in at ninth. And having such gems on our doorstep bodes well for tourism, says Paul Davis,
from Selsey-based Bunn Leisure, which has holiday parks all over the south. He said: "You've got Arundel just around the corner, you've got Chichester, Portsmouth — everything within an hour’s reach. "THen you've got Brighton. It's such a great place to be. You've got the beach but you've also got the history. "We've seen an uptake in British holidays. Staycationing is here to stay." Now West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith is backing breaks nearer to home. She said: "West Sussex has so much to enjoy, whether it's people coming from outside, or people holidaying at home. "I think people do come down for short breaks and there are a lot of people saying travelling to Europe is a lot of hassle — let's stay at home."

CHICHESTER parents are to be given a library card for their new arrivals when they register their child's birth. THe My First Library Card scheme aims to allow toddlers to access the library and enjoy the benefits of books, stories and rhymes. THe library card will show the bestselling picture book character THe Gruffalo, created by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler and published by Macmillan. West Sussex County Council's David Barling, said: "It is great news that our newest and youngest residents will have the opportunity to immediately reap the benefits of our fantastic libraries. "Research has shown how beneficial sharing books, stories and rhymes with babies can be and our libraries can help parents help their youngest. "THis card is an innovative development which has been made possible by the close partnership working across council services, plus the kind support from publisher Macmillan who have provided THe Gruffalo image at no cost." New-born babies will also be able to attend free weekly rhyme time sessions which include songs, rhymes and baby instruments. He added: "Our baby rhyme time sessions are an excellent way to introduce young children to speech, language and early literacy.”
Post TRAFFIC came to a grinding halt for a short while on Wednesday afternoon when a broken-down bus partially blocked a busy road in Sidlesham. The B2145 Selsey Road was obstructed by the vehicle and the subsequent recovery work, causing the gridlock which was followed by slow traffic at the Churchfarm Lane junction.

f Amanda Newton kayaking
Water way to learn to kayak, Amanda! by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk PARALYSED mum Amanda Newton knew it was a case of sink or swim when she deliberately capsized a kayak. Brave mum-of-four Amanda, paralysed in a cycling accident a year ago, was pushing herself to the limit in her first time paddling the vessel. And to test herself, Chichester-born Amanda upturned the kayak to further illustrate the inspirational attitude that prompted the Together We Will campaign to recruit her as an ambassador alongside TV star Will Mellor. Amanda admits she almost pulled out of the event because she had been feeling unwell and has been suffering pain in her elbows. But she defiantly pushed through the pain barrier to take part. She said: “I tried to cancel
because I felt groggy and my elbow hurt. “THat didn’t work because my friends Dids Brancflower insisted on picking me up. “What an absolutely amazing day. I loved the experience of kayaking. Such a brilliant sport and it didn’t hurt my elbow. “I even went completely out of my comfort zone and capsized the kayak on purpose. It was really, really scary not being able to feel my legs and turning upside down in the water in a boat and having to get myself out but I did it. "I had such a blast kayaking. I think it just illustrates that when you have the right support and encouragement you can achieve all your dreams. I’m hoping to go on the river soon. "THis is eactly the type of experience that the campaign is aiming for.”

Pokemon Go gamers urged to 'stay legal'
Postnewspapers.co.uk
News 7
by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk POKEMON Go gamers have been warned to stay on the right side of the law when they are on the hunt for virtual monsters in the world-wide phenomenon. THe mobile game has filled the streets of Chichester and towns throughout the country with people staring at their phone screens in search of small, colourful creatures. And it is set to become the most popular mobile game ever — in America more people are playing Pokemon Go on their phones than are using social media platform Twitter. But the huge and very rapid growth in game players is causing a few problems and users have been urged not to play the game in unsuitable venues. THere have also been some cases of players playing in cemetries, filling some parks and public spaces with noisy crowds as they seek Pokestops and rare Pokemon. Now legal experts are advising gamers how to play without coming into conflict with business and property owners and the public in general. Jordan Brown, solicitor at DAS Law, says there are a number of places in which it would be inappropriate to play Pokémon Go — for example, public buildings such as courts, where photography, filming and mobile phone use is restricted. And he says that public buildings such as museums, galleries and private business premises will have their own terms and conditions of entry. He said: “It should go without saying that you should not use your phone to search for rogue Pokemon while driving. “If witnessed by police you could be issued with a £100 fixed penalty notice
Traditional Shaving and Hair Cutting in Bognor Regis
and three penalty points. If the offence was serious enough to go court, you could be disqualified from driving and get a maximum fine of £1,000. “THe key with Pokémon Go is for both players and property owners to apply common sense. "Landowners are entitled to the lawful enjoyment of their land and to protection from any unlawful interference with their use or enjoyment of it. "It could be argued that a stream of players invading your property could amount to a legal nuisance. "THe game does not provide players with immunity from the law, nor does it give property owners the absolute right to punish any minor infringement of privacy. "It’s important to understand the spirit of the game and treat players accordingly.THat said, if players do become a nuisance or cause real problems, they need to exercise some common sense, too.”
Handle street drinkers with sympathy, town councillors are urged

A YOUNG girl's dream of dancing is set to move a step closer, thanks to the help of a Chichester hairdressers. THe fundraising for a life-changing operation for Erin Aldridge, five, pictured above, will receive a further boost later this month. One of her schoolfriends, Maisie Skinner, also aged five, is to have a hair cut with a difference to help the £40,000 fundraising appeal for Erin. Maisie said: "I would like to raise money for my friend, Erin, by having

30cm of my hair cut off taking it to chin length. "THe hair cut off will also be sent to THe Little Princess Trust who make wigs for children suffering hair loss through cancer and other medical conditions." Maisie has a fundraising target of £500 through her generosity. She had raised almost half that amount already this week. Her sponsored haircut will take place at Creations Hair and Beauty in Chichester on August 17. THe amount generous Maisie raises will help to push the amount raised for Erin, from Bognor, closer to the halfway mark. So far, some £13,500 has been raised in
a series of events and donations since the appeal was started by Erin's parents, Victoria and Ash Aldridge, last February. Due to problems during pregnancy, Erin's parents were told her mum and her own life were at risk. THe danger became so bad they were told the pregnancy would be terminated to protect her mum. However, against the odds, Erin somehow fought on for a further ten weeks in hospital at which point there was no choice but to deliver Erin. At the age of two, she was diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy which has left her unable to walk unaided. She was
due to have a selective dorsal rhizotomy operation on the NHS that would hopefully allow her to walk and dance like her peers. But the health service pulled the funding for Erin's procedure at the 11th hour to leave her family having to find the £40,000 needed to pay for the major operation. Among those to have helped them was Jude Smith, six, another young friend of Erin's. As reported, he completed a triathlon on Felpham seafront earlier this month. His fundraising has raised £1,480 which is more than £1,000 over his initial target.

Burglars raid family house to snatch £10,000 jewellery

items are of great sentimental value to the victim, who would really like to be reunited with them. If you can help in any way please contact us by emailing 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting serial 1738 of 14/07. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers independently on 0800 555 111 (www. crimestoppers-org.uk). Meanwhile, rural crime across West Sussex has fallen dramatically, says a new report. THe rate has dropped by 29 per cent in the last year, it has been revealed. In 2014 £392,162 was lost to rural crime, compared to £276,584 in 2015. Experts reckon an improved working relationship between farmers with police, better security and more reports from the public have contributed to the drop. THe report, by insurance giant NFU Mutual, claims the items most commonly targeted by thieves over the last 12 months were tools from farms and businesses, quad bikes and garden equipment. NFU’s John Heathersaid: “Rural thieves are becoming increasingly sophisticated and using computers rather than bolt cutters to steal from farms and country properties. Farmers and police have been working hard to adopt high-tech security measures to tackle the problems.”

DETECTIVES are searching for burglars who stole jewellery and other items of "great family sentimental value" from a West Wittering home. Several pieces of jewellery to the value of around £10,000 were stolen during the raid, which is believed to have taken place between Monday July 4 and THursday July 14. THieves struck at the house in Cakeham Road when they brok in through the garage and an internal door into the house. Other items which were taken by the burglars included a pair of silver yacht cufflinks, a gold necklace with a yacht pendant, a metal chain with a Union Jack and a pearl necklace with a set of Olympic rings as a pendant. A gold coin in a blue jewellery box was stolen from the study and two cycles were also stolen, say investigating poilce officers. Detective Constable Emma Fields says the owner of the stolen items is keen to get them back. She said: "We are seeking any information about the burglary or the whereabouts of the stolen property. CHICHESTER Youth Bowling Club took part in a 12-hour sponsored bowl and raised £2,585 in memory of Jan Hughes, the parent of a club member. THe money was collected to give to the Rowans Hospice in Waterlooville, where he was cared for during his cancer battle. The total included a donation of £290 from Lewmar Marine Ltd in Havant, the company of one coache Mark Wood. Organiser Al Ashby said: “Parents and staff at MFA bowling alley got involved and bowlers aged between seven and 19 bowled for 12-hours non-stop. "Everyone thought the world of Jan and he is sorely missed. This is our way of saying thank you to Rowans for the help and support they have given his wife Gloria and daughter Taylor in this difficult and tragic time."

CHICHESTER folk are being urged to take the "veg pledge" to support the charity Beating Bowel Cancer. THe idea is to go meat and fish free for seven days and donate the money saved to the charity. Mark Flannagan, chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said: "It’s a great way to look at your diet and spending habits and raise funds to help those affected by bowel cancer at the same time. "It’s only for a week and you could learn a lot about what you eat and spend your money on, as well as support a great cause. ." Learning to live without meat occasionally could also be good for your health, it is claimed, as there is strong evidence to suggest eating too much red and processed meat is one factor that can increase the risk of developing the disease. Mr Flannagan added: “Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer and someone is diagnosed every 15 minutes. Yet if diagnosed early, more than 90 per of cases can be treated successfully. “THere are some risks for bowel cancer you can’t change, such as age and family history. However there are a number of factors known to increase risk. Reduce this by cutting down on red meat and processed food, exercising, quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake." *You can sign up for the pledge at www.beatingbowelcancer.org.

Commuters face train chaos as union plans strike action
Diners will be hooked on fish dish SIDLESHAM'S Crab & Lobster restaurant has launched an authentic "catch and cook" fishing experience, offering guests the opportunity to haul in and later eat their very own catch of the day. Fisherman Dale Ford leads this “no frills” full or half-day adventure, with the chance to catch fish such as bass, rays, bream, tope, cod, whiting and congers. The experience takes place on a working angling vessel and is aimed at those with their sea legs looking for a genuine rather than luxurious fishing experience. The trips depart from Chichester Marina and whatever fish guests catch will be prepared that evening by the restaurant's chefs. The year round experience is weather dependant and costs £120 for a half day or £220 for a full day for up to four people.
CHICHESTER commuters face travel chaos after the RMT Union announced a five-day strike on the Southern rail network Conductor members are due to walk out from midnight on Monday until midnight on Friday. Parent firm Govia THameslink (GTR) wants to use new trains where the driver has to operate the train doors using CCTV. But the union fears there will be job losses and has raised safety fears about the move. It follows a series of strikes earlier this year which left commuters facing lengthy, delayed journeys with many services cancelled. THe union said changes to guards' roles were "due to be railroaded through" from August 21 and it had to confirm the next strike. RMT general secretary Mick Cash said the RMT had offered to suspend action for three months if Southern put its plans on hold. But he said the request had been "kicked back in our faces" and a letter sent by the union to new Transport Secretary Chris Grayling was ignored. Mr Cash said: “THis

A27 plans still leave city in the slow lane, say residents
Nominate now for the city awards CHICHESTER City Council is seeking nominations for the annual civic, heritage and young citizens’ awards. THe council has been honouring people who have made an outstanding contribution to the city and its residents for many years. Buildings in the city that have been refurbished or redeveloped in the past 12 months and have enhanced the area can be nominated for a heritage award. Nominations for Blue Plaques are also being sought to commemorate famous people or events connected with Chichester buildings. *More info to nominate someone you think is worthy of an award go to: www.chichestercity.gov.uk
by Ruth Scammell news@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS to improve the traffic congestion on the A27 are not good enough, some residents have said. Highways England has launched a 10-week public consultation to seek views on five different options which they claim will make local commutes faster and more reliable, while protecting the environment. Funding for the scheme comes from the Department for Transport’s £15bn Roads Investment Strategy that is providing people with better journeys, cutting congestion and improving the economy. THe options include building new slip roads and making improvements to junctions. But at one of the public consultations held at the Fishbourne Centre this week, some said they felt it still wasn’t enough to tackle the problem. Bob Probee, 69, from Hambrook, said: “I have tried to find out why the northern bypass has been dropped but I can’t get an answer. I think it’s outside the budget. We are looking

at improving the junctions on testing roads. It’s not cheap compared with building a new road. I think this would only work in the short term. “If we had a new road, these are the sort of options which might need to be done in 20 years time when the northern bypass is built to deal with the local traffic.” Wife Alison Probee, 65, added: “It’s going to be two years of total disruption to everybody’s lives. It’s bad enough now.” Bill Young, 68, from Charlton, was at the exhibition with his brother Bob. He said: “Myself and my brother both live in Charlton. We use the road to come to Chichester a lot. “My opinion is that we are likely to get the cheapest option. “THe only thing that will work is to have two fly-overs. But the government has limited money to spend.” One man, a pensioner from Chichester, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "Ideally they should just build a new road but that would cost a lot more. People moving to the south of the city will be deeply affected. "I'm not sure that this is the answer!"

THERE is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man, so said Sir Winston Churchill. Substitute "a man" for children and you'll get an idea of just how much fun youngsters have been having at Lavant House Stables, near Chichester this summer. THe long break from school can leave children twiddling their thumbs with boredom but that isn't the case for young riders who have enjoyed lessons on ponies which are carefully selected and extensively trained. So it's especially busy at the stables, which is owned and managed by Tony and Lucy THompson along with their grown children Amelia and Charlie. Horse riding for children is proven to work best with lessons to build up confidence gradually, in a safe
Students off on Kenya adventure by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk STAFF and students from Chichester College have embarked on a mission to help build a school in Kenya. A group of 40 flew to Nairobi last week as part of a two-week visit to THe Walk Centre in Nakuru. THey will begin building a new school at the site, as well as renovating existing classrooms and teaching at the centre. Since 2011, more than 250 students and members of staff have made the same journey. Student experience manager Lisa Humphries, who organised the trip, said: “We've been working with African Adventures Foundation for a number of years and, since January, we have been

fundraising with them to build a new school. We are halfway to reaching our target of £70,000 so we can now start work. “Staff there have demolished temporary structures, so the foundations should be in place and we’ll start laying bricks. “We’re taking our biggest group yet, so we’re anticipating getting lots done while we're out there.” THe trip is self-funded — and volunteers have time for sightseeing, including visits to an elephant orphanage, giraffe sanctuary and a safari. THe group travelled with 40 cases filled with donations for the centre. Lisa added: “I’ve have been overwhelmed by the generosity. And the stables have proved even more popular during the hot days we have had thanks to the new indoor school which opened two months ago. Lavant House's Lauren Porter said: "THe new indoor school keeps everyone cool in the summer and dry in the winter. "Lots of the kids and parents have come in saying "thank you, it has been so much fun". THe stables staff encourages feedback and the website is testimony to the positivity. One delighted mum wrote: "What a brilliant week, thank you so much. Happy days, fun times had by all!" Discount bus travel card axed
f It's all smiles at lavant House Stables
CHICHESTER students are among 6,000 affected after West Sussex County Council said it will stop its 3in1 bus travel card. THe card will be axed at the end of the year because of national legislation — and as part of a plan to fill a £44million fund shortfall. Students currently get savings on bus travel thanks to the scheme. THe council has said help will be available for low income families. THe council’s Highway and Transport chief John O’Brien said: “THis was a difficult decision to take but we are in one of the most financially challenging times local government has ever known." Financial help will be available if a child attends the nearest school out of catchment and doesn’t qualify for free travel, says the council.

THE final preparations are underway for Chichester’s International Film Festival with organisers claiming this will be the biggest one yet. THe festival officially kicks off on THursday, August 11, with 155 films from around the world set to be screened across the next few weeks. THe festival, which is now in its 25th year, will warm up with open air screenings in Priory Park of Calamity Jane today (Friday) and Finding Dory tomorrow (Saturday) with a drive-in screening of Casablanca to follow on Sunday. Filmmakers are set to make an appearance to discuss their films with movie fans. Roger Gibson, the festival’s artistic director, said: “We are excited. It’s probably the biggest one yet. Each year I say that and each year we try and top last year’s festival. “THere is something for everybody. We’ve got films for children too. “I always suggest that people are adventurous and don’t go for the most obvious films. You can see films that you won’t see again anywhere. “We are concerned with showing good, quality films. “It’s only at a festival that you get the opportunity to meet the filmmakers and find out what they have to say.” A number

VISITORS can take a step back in time and experience the nostalgic sights, sounds and smells of an era when steam and world class engineering powered the country. Visitors to the Vintage & Steam show at Weald & Downland Museum will enjoy all the bustle and excitement of a traditional steam festival on August 20 and 21, with full-size, miniature and model steam engines on display and working around our 40-acre site. Also on show will be a wide range of exhibits including: commercial vehicles, military vehicles, miniature steam engines, narrow gauge railways, model boats, and classic cars. A favourite attraction at the event is the gallopers, powered by a Fowler Showman’s steam engine. f Drivers are set to strike over pay
PATIENT transport service Coperforma could be hit by strike action in a row over pay. THe company, which runs the non-emergency service taking patients from their homes for hospital appointments, has been branded “incompetent” since it took over the contract from South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) in April. Dozens of patients, many from the Chichester area, have complained about crews failing to turn up or showing up late. THe bosses at Coperforma and doctors from Clinical Commissioning Groups were on hand to update West Sussex County Council’s Health and Adult Social Care Committee (HASC) members on the situation at a meeting in June. And Edward Belsey, a Mid Sussex district councillor on HASC, said: “I’m flabbergasted by what seems to be incompetence on both sides. Coperforma, and it appears the CCG, have done themselves no favours.” Now the GMB is balloting its members working at Docklands Medical Services throughout Sussex, which is contracted by Coperforma to provide the service. THe union says that its members have not been paid an estimated £45,000 in overtime and unsocial hours payments. It says they were told outstanding back pay, holiday pay and pension contributions would be honoured. But the union says employees may have to wait as long as six months to receive payment. Dockland
picked up patient transport service provision in West Sussex from the end of June after the previous provider, VM Langfords, went into administration. A consultative ballot asked members what action they are willing to take to ensure that their employer pays staff what they are owed and 92.1 per cent voted to walk out in September if things aren't resolved. GMB regional organiser Gary Palmer said: “It's another blow to GMB members who've been treated abysmally since Coperforma took over this ill-fated contract. “Staff were transferred out of the NHS against their wishes to an inexperienced company who were always going to struggle with the size of the contract. “THree months later, the staff endured yet more uncertainty as their employer, VM Langfords, became insolvent. Workers were then moved again to Docklands Medical Services with the promise that all of the outstanding pay and pension contributions would be forthcoming. “Now, only one month on, staff have had yet another slap in the face as promises to settle outstanding may have come to nothing as Coperforma attempts to draw out paying staff what they are owed. “THe staff’s patience has now worn thin and GMB members are understandably unwilling to wait for six months to get the money they are owed with the memory of their last employer's liquidation still fresh in their minds.” *Have you been affected by a crew attending you late or missing an appointment all together. Child adoption appeal by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk AN appeal is being made for loving homes in Chichester and across West Sussex for children in need of adoption. West Sussex County Council is appealing for people to come forward who are interested in adopting children of all ages including those with additional needs. Last year around 40 children were given new families through adoption, says the council's Stephen Hillier. He added: “THe benefits of adoption for both child and family are immense. We have seen time and time again how a child’s life can be transformed by the love of an adoptive parent and we are asking for more people to give someone a life-changing experience. “Children needing adoption have often experienced neglect and trauma and will have additional developmental and emotional needs. "Giving them a loving home is immensely important. For our part, we will ensure that appropriate support is wrapped around the child and their new family. We
would urge anyone interested to get in touch regardless of martial status, sexuality or ethnic background.” Of the children waiting to be adopted in West Sussex, a number also have a range of learning needs and medical conditions, including autism. THere is also a need for people who would consider adopting a child with young siblings. An adoption social worker said: “Adoption gives children the opportunity to experience happy and save family life. "THe one thing that all adopters have in common is their desire to give a child secure, loving and a permanent home.” Adoptive parents, through a legal process, take on the full parental responsibility for the child and have the opportunity to make a lifetime of difference to a child. Support is available for all new adoptive parents to assist them through the assessment process which can take several months or more. *To find out more about adopting call 0330 222 7777 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/adoption.

POTENTIALLY deadly jellyfish could be spotted on West Sussex beaches thanks to global warming, according to wildlife experts. THe Marine Conservation Society has reported an increasing number of Portuguese man o'war jellyfish sightings on and a round our shores. THe poisonous creatures have blue or purple tentacles and can deliver an incredibly painful sting if touched. And in some cases, this can be deadly. THe Portuguese man o’ war is actually carnivorous and it uses its venom to paralyse small fish and then devours them. Its tentacles have been known to reach 160ft in length – which is the same length of five London buses in a row. Now Dr Peter Richardson, Head of Biodiversity and Fisheries at the
RURAL crime across West Sussex has fallen dramatically, says a new report. THe rate has dropped by 29 per cent in the last year, it has been revealed. In 2014 £392,162 was lost to rural crime, compared to £276,584 in 2015. Experts reckon an improved working relationship between farmers with police, better security and more reports from members of the public have contributed to the drop. THe report, by insurance giant NFU Mutual, claims the items most commonly targeted by thieves over the last 12 months were tools from farms and businesses, quad bikes and garden equipment.
MCS wants beach users to report sightings along our coast at places such as Bracklesham Bay and the Witterings. He said:"THere's evidence that jellyfish numbers are increasing in parts of the world, including UK seas. "Some scientists argue that jellyfish numbers increase and then decrease normally every 20 years or so, however, others believe and these increases are linked to factors such as pollution, over-fishing and possibly climate change. "THe MCS jellyfish survey helps provide some of the information we need to understand more about these ancient creatures. "We still know relatively little about jellyfish and what drives changes in their numbers, so reporting even a single one can help.” THe survey, which is now in its 14th year, lets experts to see when and where the jellyfish gather. *Got a story? COOKIE PIE FROM PENNY BARNES
The Post's wine expert with his opinion about this week's best buys WE begin this week with a trip to the Antipodes in the form of the M&S Kaituna Hills 2015 Sauvignon Blanc. THis particular wine has a lovely bouquet, is zesty and sharp with its gooseberry and greengage fruits, but has smooth honeyed notes to finish. THis wine is perhaps not for everybody, but is an interesting wine experience and most distinctive in terms of flavour. It has a normal price of £10.50, but I managed to avail myself of a 25 per cent reduction. Spain beckoned in my second choice, namely a 2010 Marques del Romeral, Rioja Reserva priced at £13 but, with the reduction, a snip at £9 75. THis Rioja Reserva is dry, full of flavour, vanilla rich with a taste of black cherries and oak and is in fact bottled by M&S and is of traditional Rioja style. When on offer this wine merits attention. In the £5 range I leave you with two cheaper buys, namely Sainsbury's 2014 La Patrie Cahors and an old favourite of mine, Lidl's Cepa Lebrel Rioja Reserva 2011. I am off to La Belle France this week and will report accordingly next week! Buvez bien!

A HIGH profile missing person has been in the press this week and a few totally unknown missing cases also circulated on Facebook and other social media. So I thought I would throw interesting facts and thoughts in the pot on this subject. THe issue of missing is hugely complex. People in very different situations – from a child abducted by force to an adult who chooses to leave the family home – may all be labelled as ‘missing’. Defining what it means to go missing seems to help services provide more appropriately for those left behind. People go missing for a wide variety of reasons, which makes providing a single, concise definition of a ‘missing person’ or what it is to ‘go missing’ very difficult. Of course there are always two sides to the story and certainly some people do not want to be found. An individual may simply consider themselves to have started a new life elsewhere, or to have left a situation which they may have seen as negative or dangerous. Yet they can become the centre of a campaign to find them. It is always amazing how powerful social media is when it is needed to circulate information widely. However, in the case of missing people sometimes they may be being shared by well meaning family members and then the emotive stories touch people who then share. However, the one-sided view shadows the story behind when it may be a situation which should not be shared. Maybe this is a sad side of today’s social media but with potential for real fear as the person who is trying to be missing can be identified (and indeed reported) by the general public. Sometimes it can be connected to forms of harassment or the control of a person. Looking at the stats: In Sussex last year, there were 10,405 reported cases of missing. For missing people – a charity report states that studies show around two-thirds of people who go missing are below the age of 18. Children and young people between the ages of 12 and 17 are the most likely to go missing. Overall, roughly equal numbers of males and females go missing. However, in teenagers, there are substantially more cases of females going missing than males whereas in adults, males go missing more often than females. THis, of course, is shocking that two thirds of reported missing - so 6,936 - are under 18. I guess for those of us working in the community at grassroots level we know that there is often a personal story behind the scenes and keeping an open mind needs to be the first thought before any action. Check out: https://www.missingpeople.org.uk for searching for lost family, for information, advice and support.

FRUSTRATED passengers at Bognor Regis railway station can at least enjoy looking at the handiwork of gifted photoraphers. Middleton Camera Club is staging a series of temporary exhibitions in distinctive bow window of the station's former cafe. Subjects of their focus have included wildlife and portraiture and local scenes. One of the recent two weekly displays featured 18 works by five photographers. Pictured above are left to right: John Yates, Lyn Phillips, Rita English and Dick Saunders. Trevor Staff, the club's vicechairman, took the photo. He said: "THe photographs brighten up the windows of the cafe which would, otherwise, look pretty boring. "We had a display in Felpham village in an empty shop for a while and that went well and we wanted to see if the cafe would do as well. "It seems to have worked. A lot of people are looking at it. "We have also had a lot more

Trevor has owned a chiropodist's business on the station forecourt for 30 years and the station manager, Howard Clear, soon agreed to his suggestion for the cafe. THe window is available for as long as the premises are unwanted by Southern Railway for any other purpose. THe camera club was formed in 1962 and prides itself on being a small and friendly club with some 50 members. Its meetings are held every fortnight on Mondays at the Jubilee Hall in Middleton. THe new season starts next month. Friendly competitions are held between the members and speakers visit to pass on advice about specialist topics. Further details about the club are available on its website www.middletoncameraclub. weebly.com
A spokeswoman for the charity said: "In a boutique style, the shop stands out from the rest as being good quality, friendly, spacious and upmarket. "Dogs, of course, are welcome to bring their owners in and donations can be accepted by driving up the driveway from Belmont Street at the rear of the shop and ringing the bell at the back door." THe shop is open 9.30am4.30pm on six days a week and 10am-4pm on Sundays.
Dear Editor Chichester bypass has a problem -Traffic Congestion! Statement: obvious – Solution: difficult – New bypasses to north and south: rejected - Current Proposals: not fit for purpose – Alternative Proposal: please read on…. Built decades ago, our overloaded bypass finds it hard to cope with two main types of traffic in conflict with each other. Local traffic crossing and running along the by-pass fights for priority with the long-distance traffic which just wants to get past Chichester as fast and as safely as it can. So we need a solution which separates them. The options put forward by Highways England (HE) earlier in the year addressed that very problem by proposing to re-route long-distance traffic to a new by-pass, to the north or south of the city. While these options made eminent sense from a traffic viewpoint, I wholeheartedly agree with those who campaigned vigorously against those proposed routes. We should not destroy our beautiful countryside to solve what is essentially an urban problem. THe HE options now on offer do little more than tinker with the issues. THey fall short of providing an acceptable solution because: 1. Local traffic and long distance traffic will continue to share the sections between the “improved” junctions, with merging and demerging disrupting the smooth flow of traffic 2. THe HE proposals offer nothing to the north and east of Bognor Road, other than acknowledging the removal of the signals at Oving Road. More thought will have to be given here as it is fruitless to improve the Fishbourne-Bognor Road section only to find a bottleneck is created between Bognor Road and Westhampnett. 3. THe proposals are only palliative and are unlikely to provide a long-term solution, probably needing to be upgraded (with additional cost) by the time these measures are in place. 4. they constrain local traffic movements at some of the main junctions similar to those proposed some years ago, which were regarded as completely uncaccepable 5. additional rural land would be needed for the relief road proposed in option 2 (a rural solution to an urban problem - bad news!)
A new bypass for through traffic to the north or south is not acceptable, so what can we do to remove the conflict between local and long-distance traffic? My suggestion may appear radical but it: • Segregates local traffic completely from A27 long-distance traffic; • Takes no extra land between Fishbourne and Bognor Road roundabouts; • Maintains all the junctions on the existing bypass in the same form as they are now; and • Will last for many more years than the HE proposals now being discussed. Instead of attempting to move the trunk road traffic laterally (to north or south), I suggest it should be moved vertically to a new A27 on a high-level dual-carriageway running from Fishbourne roundabout to Bognor Road roundabout over the existing bypass. THe new road would be no higher than the fly-overs proposed in some of HE’s options, and such a road would provide a solution as to how to segregate local trips from long-distance journeys. 1851. Once developed, the area remained largely unchanged until after WW2. THere was a strong sense of community among the residents of Somerstown, especially since many generations of the same family had grown up alongside each other in the neighbourhood. It supported grocer’s stores, sweet shops, bakeries, a snack bar, an antique shop, a scrap yard and nine pubs. Summer outings were arranged to the seaside, sometimes in charabancs and coaches. In 1945 VE day was celebrated with a street party on High Street. By the 1950s, the houses, many of which

Greenfield buoyed by City's fine form with Enfield up next CHICHESTER City Ladies travel to Enfield for a pre-season friendly match on Sunday in buoyant mood after two encouraging wins. Liam Greenfield’s outfit triumphed and hit home 11 goals in the process, with a 4-0 win over Winchester Ladies at Oaklands Park first up. Goals in the first 20 minutes from Chloe Dowdell and Charelle Khassel an impudent finish from Dowdell on half-time sent the home side into the interval in total control. Lauren Cheshire missed a sitter after being set up by Shannon Albuery down the right. Next Jess Lewry got a sight of goal and needed no second invitation to fire a shot passed keeper Charlie Snelling. Dowdell could have netted a third late on, but her flick went over. City thrashed Crawley Wasps 7-1 in their next game on Sunday. THe game was played in sessions of 30 minutes, allowing both development players and first team regulars to get a run out. Lucie Challen was forced to sit the game out due to an injury
sustained against Winchester on THursday. Chichester played mostly first team regulars in the opening session and the inevitable flow of goals arrived and within a minute Albuery scored. Again Dowdell was at the heart of the swift move and set up her strike partner for a simple finish to open the scoring. A few minutes later the lead was doubled by Jade Widdows,
PostSport Bosham sign up Marco 'n Ryan
with the first of her two goals. Amy Found put in a delicious cross into the box and Widdows rose at the back stick to head home. Two minutes later and she had her second, this time finishing sweetly after beating the offside trap and latching onto a ball from Albuery. THe second session saw the development players see some action. Only two goals were scored in the second period with Terri Foster blasting in from the edge of the area having been set by Lewry. Next Albuery got her second goal showing exquisite touch to bamboozle defenders and finish with ease. Albuery wrapped up her hat trick with a neat finish from a corner and, after Rosanne Fine got her name on the score sheet for Crawley. Lauren Cheshire produced a sublime finish with a cheeky chip over the keeper to take Chichester’s overall tally to seven. Next up for the development squad is a trip to Bexhill on Sunday. ALAN PRICE

Rutherford rallies the troops for FA Cup clash at Arundel by Robson Friend sport@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER City are preparing to kickoff the season with an important FA Cup extra preliminary round clash at Arundel tomorrow (Saturday). City go in to the encounter after a win at home to Christchurch in their final pre-season game in the Steve Bernard Memorial Trophy, right. THe Oaklands Park outfit won 3-0 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 at 90 minutes. And despite failing to register a win in regular time this summer, boss Miles Rutherford believes every preseason game has been beneficial for the club. He said: “Every game we have played
f Andy Chant
has been worthwhile. We haven’t won a game in normal time but we've showed some great performances so it’s not all doom and gloom. “Pre-season hasn't been the greatest due to unavailability. We haven't played anyone yet with a full squad as people are away at different times which is frustrating. But, Saturday will be the first time we've got everyone together for a game with Arundel in the FA Cup.” THe manager is busy securing some
last minute deals, with a striker or two in his sights. He added: “We’re just in the process of making a last couple of signings, which will hopefully be completed so we should have some new faces for the weekend. "All through the summer I've been chasing forwards and I think I've maybe got one or two so will see what happens. “We’re looking forward to it even though we've been given a real tough start with Arundel, then Eastbourne Town at home who
were runners up last year and Newhaven away who finished third for the first two games of the league. THe first few weeks will be important for us, we need to hit the ground running straight away.” Rutherford says he is aiming to improve once again this campaign but admits the start of the season is pivotal: He added: “Wherever you finish the year before you try and do better than that, it's a big ask this time as we finished fifth last season but we hope to be around there, or above. "We want to be in the top five at Christmas and see were we go from there, same as any side. "THe first ten games are crucial as it sets your season, that’s what’s important, hopefully we do well”.

BOSHAM manager Andy Probee has told the club's website of his delight in securing the signatures of forward duo Marco Giambelardini and Ryan Hillier. Giambelardini (seen right of picture) put pen to paper for the Walton Lane side despite preseason interest from Arundel, scoring a hat-trick for the Mullets in a friendly at AFC Petersfield. Probee said: "I'm delighted Marco has shown his commitment to us off the back of a tremendous season. He's a player whose skill and ability causes defenders problems, and we are happy to have him with us." Giambelardini, 26, was virtually ever-present last season and bagged 11 goals, including the Division 2 Cup final opener against league champions AFC Varndeans to help the Robins win the trophy for a fourth time. THe Robins' boss also heaped praise on Hillier, 23, who was playing West Sussex League
football for Fittleworth for a large part of last season, before returning and playing a crucial role in the cup victory. He added: "Ryan will be a massive asset to the club this year. His pace and work rate in the (Division 2) cup final were phenomenal. "He always seems to create a lot of opportunities and I'm sure that he'll be in double figures this season." Meanwhile, it's a largely retained squad from last season for the Robins, bar central defender Dave Bryant who is taking time away from the game, and Nick Edgington, the longserving midfield man unlikely to feature due to increased work commitments. Former Robins captain Bradley Miles has also made a return to Walton Lane after spells at Petersfield Town and Sidlesham.

sell 100 tickets on local shows, with promoters giving you a match you would be expected to win. THis wouldn't have suited me though as there are not enough local pro shows to earn a steady income throughout the year. I'm proud though that I have made my way in the hardest game in the world by fighting some of our countries best boxers on their way up. Getting the call to fight on a Matchroom promoted show furthermore proves I am capable of giving a test to any prospect. I have to say that of another great experience, I was mostly humbled by the amount of support I received. After posting a video of the day before weigh-in on social media, I was blown away by the amount of good wishes I got. People from my amazing community came together in showing me a tremendous gesture of goodwill by posting good luck messages. Fighting on the road in front of opposing hostile crowds, I'm not used to such adulation. It made me feel ten feet tall. If sold as many tickets as I got likes, comments and shares on Facebook, I'd be undefeated! *My picture shows me with Eddie Hearn from Matchroom.

SAM Harvey scored 79 but the big-hitter couldn’t help Chichester Priory Park 1st XI to a victory at Findon in Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 3. And there was another super stint of bowling from Matthew Geffen but again it wasn’t enough to give the visitors the edge and the hosts recorded a win by four wickets. Findon won the toss and elected to field and Peter Lamb, with 36, and Simon Hasted’s 34 added to Harvey’s knock as Chichester reached 200 for 10 (52.2 overs). Geffen took four for 61 from 15 overs and Daniel Joseph took two wickets for the same figures but Findon scored 201 for 6 (42 overs). Bowlers Alex Pegg and Elliot Davies were in fine form as Chichester 2nd XI chalked up a convincing triumph over
their Findon counterparts in Sussex Premier League 2nd XI Division 2 at Priory Park. Chichester won the toss and elected to field, and Pegg took five wickets for 10 runs from seven over. And Davies saw off four batsmen for 13 runs from 5.4 overs. It limited the visitors to 65 for 10 (25.4 overs) and the home side soon confirmed the win. THey took 20 overs to score 66 for two and won by eight wickets. Stirlands 1st XI enjoyed a comfortable six-wicket victory at Hellingly (Hailsham) in this Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 4 match. Hellingly won the toss and elected to bat and sco red 201 for 10 (47.4 overs) with bowler William Gubbins recording figures of four for 41. George Coles took three wickets for 13 runs from 10 overs, while Dan Mugford took two wickets for 12 runs from seven overs. THe impressive Torquil Deacon
Straight to victory WEST Wittering 1st XI beat their Clymping counterparts by five wickets in West Sussex Invitation League Division 3. Clymping won the toss and elected to bat and Alan Budd hit 54, with the home side’s James Straight taking four for 37. The visitors reached 148 for 10 (31.4 overs) before Wittering’s Gareth Lendrum scored 57no to help his outfit to 149 for 5 (25.1 overs). West Wittering 2nd XI overcame the challenge from Rustington 2nd XI with a win by four wickets in West Sussex Invitation League Division 7. In the Rustington innings, Jack Harte took four
for 34 as the visitors were kept at bay to score 94 for 10 (28.4 overs). The home side’s Charlie Caddy top scored with 22no in a score of 96 for 6 (23.3 overs). Eastergate 1st XI saw off Felbridge & Sunnyside 1st XI with a win by 64 runs in West Sussex Invitation League Division 1. The visitors elected to field and the home side scored 189 for 9 (49 overs) with Andrew Smith hitting 39, captain Jack Stannard scoring 38 and Nathan Green reaching 36. Felbridge scored 125 for 10 (42.1 overs) as Nick Smith took four wickets for 33, and Jamie Murphy with bowling figures of four for 32.
scored 85 not out as the visitors reached 203 for 4 (46.1 overs). Michael Clowes top scored with 47 when Stirlands 2nd XI suffered a fourwicket defeat at home to Portslade in Sussex Premier League 2nd XI Division 3 (West). Stirlands won the toss and elected to bat and scored 165 for 9 (53 overs) with Clowes’ knock added to with 21 from Jake Moores and 17 from Alex Brazier. Wicketkeeper Elliot Pearce made four catches as Porstlade tried to top the home side’s total. Sebastian Fecher bowled one, while Alex Brazier took two of the wickets and David Briance dismissed two batsmen, his second LBW. overs and probably did not deserve a single wicket but got three for his perseverance (two stumpings for Odell). Ezaz took two for 28 and Matt Beard two for 36. Steve Dudman cleaned up the tail with two for 14. THe Duke’s team’s bowling was consistently good, with the opening pair being the best seen at Goodwood this year. All bar one of the Duke’s side taking wickets: Roy 2-27, Fenwick 1-24, Carlton-Smith 1-29, Settrington 1-36. It didn’t help losing Peter Lamb first ball of Goodwood's innings. Ezaz made 24, but it was a 77-run partnership by Mike Smith (39) and Sam Harvey (39) that swung the game in Goodwood's favour. When they were both out and Geffen followed for 13 it was game on again for the Duke’s side, but the experienced Odell, 28no, and John Clifton, 17no, saw them home with three overs remaining. A spokesman said: "Special mention must go to umpires Bryan Tomalin and Richard Geffen, Lottie for scoring and Claire and Ann for a super tea."

Ashmore hits 79 to get Eagles in a flap JOE Ashmore top scored with 79 in Bognor Regis 1st XI's draw with Crawley Eagles at the Regis Oval. IT was another busy season for me on the circuit and it reached its climax with a fight on the Sky Sports show under the biggest promotional banner in the country, Matchroom boxing. A two-day all inclusive trip up to Leeds, courtesy of Britain's leading promoter Eddie Hearn, ended in a points loss for me against the unbeaten Hull hopeful, Conor Seymour. Seymour, now unbeaten in seven, edged out our contest on his fitness and work rate so there's no complaints on my part regarding the decision. It may have been a different outcome had I been in better condition. Without sounding like I'm reeling off excuses, it's true that I wasn't in full training when taking the fight, having thought that I had already fought my last fight of the season. I was originally booked to MC the VK White collar show at the Arun Leisure Centre on Saturday. But 10 days out from the show, my manager and long-time friend Michael Ballingall phoned me with the news that we had been offered the Seymour fight on the Josh Warrington undercard, televised on Sky Sports. On turning pro five years ago I just wanted to earn money. THe only way to do this in the pro game is to fight regularly, away from home against up-and-coming, unbeaten fighters, in front of their home crowds. THis often means taking fights on short notice and being on the wrong end of some bad decisions, when a close fight goes in favour of the local ticket seller. THey call my type of fighter a journeyman. A boxer who has adequate skill but is not of the caliber of a contender. In respects us journeyman get used to further the careers of the prospects with title laden futures ahead of them. It's not the most glamorous side of boxing. But it has taken me to places I would have never been before and opened up other opportunities I would have never enjoyed if I wasn't fighting. It would all be different if I could

CHICHESTER City Ladies FC have the city's excellent curry house Masala Gate as their shirt sponsors, and we were wondering to what extent their backing could extend. Surely, there could be no better incentive for a player than to get a ruby on the house if they should get the woman-of-the-match award, for instance? IT isn't uncommon for a side to list a player who they are potentially keen to sign as A Trialist. But the nonleague outfit who puzzled fans and a journalist by listing all eleven players as such.
BOGNOR's veteran commercial, er, guru Maurice Warner has retired from his job at Nyewood Lane, with his final bow coming at the club's sponsorship evening on Wednesday. He'll be missed, but then again he has retired before. So, will he be back? PREMIER League stars can earn bundles for their trouble and it seems relatively big bucks have come to one of our local non-league sides, too. It is said this particular recruit is on double the money of his teammates. Hope they don't find out!

Whyte Rocks crock shock by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk ROCKS ace Harvey Whyte could be sidelined for up to six months with a knee injury, boss Jamie Howell fears. It leaves Bognor short of numbers with the Ryman Prenier League campaign looming after a clutch of players moved on in the summer. Crocked Whyte hobbled away from Nyetimber Lane on crutches last week after being forced out of the action in a 4-0 friendly defeat of Pagham. Howell said: "THe swelling hasn't gone down yet so we can't assess it properly but we think anything between two and six months. We'll just have to wait and see." But there was some good news for
f Howell has Whyte out, inset, wants Grainger, right, and has signed Wild, left
the Nye Camp chief with the one-month loan capture of Brighton U23 left-back Dylan Barnett. Howell is hopeful that he can secure the services of keeper Billy Grainger, who is being eyed by Premier League Crystal Palace. If the Eagles sign Grainger they may well loan him to the Rocks. Bognor open their league campaign at home to Lowestoft on August 13 and Howell says he is happy with his strikeforce of Ollie Pearce and Jimmy Wild, a capture from Chichester City. He added: "THe keeper is concerning and I may have to go to a professional club and get a player on loan. But I am relatively happy with who we have and there is still time to bring in others." *Rocks shirt sponsors for next season is CSL Ltd, drawn on Wednesday night.
