tively and to curb smuggling of red sanders in Kadapa, Chittoor and Nellore, districts. As many as 30 red sander smugglers from Tamil Nadu border were caught red-handed this week in Chittoor of Andhra Pradesh. About 201 logs of the precious wood weighing 7 tonnes, worth over `2 crore, were seized from them. A senior officer forest BSL Misra said, “Personnel of Task Force, formed to check smuggling of red sandalwood, apprehended the smugglers when they were transporting sandalwoodafter from Bakarapet forest area.” The forest officer said it’s a risky job as their lives are on the line, for sometimes their personnel get hurt when smugglers attack them. “We are short of
hands and this is a big problem when we conduct raids,” he said. The mandate of the dedicated team is to curb smuggling of red sanders in Kadapa, Chittoor and Nellore districts, from where illegal felling and transportation of the precious and endangered wood had been widely reported, Mishra said. The sandal trees grow in these areas in large numbers.

Asian bacteria hits Florida oranges Left behind by a tiny insect called an Asian citrus psyllid, it deprives nutrients from the trees. WASHINGTON: Citrus production in Florida, the world’s second largest orange juice supplier after Brazil, is being threatened by a bacteria from Asia that has scientists racing for a remedy. Known as citrus greening, the disease makes oranges bitter and fall from the tree before they can ripen. A bacteria left behind by a tiny insect called an Asian citrus psyllid deprives nutrients from the trees. The disease can remain latent for five years before it begins to show its effects, and by then it is often too late, said Greg Carlton, chief of the bureau of pest eradication and
control at the Department of Agriculture in Florida. “Through the years we have seen more and more insects and disease,” said Carlton, who has watched the problem balloon since it first arose in 2006. “Last year about 20 percent of our fruits dropped on the ground. And we will start the harvest season in a few weeks
— we are not sure whether we will get that drop again.” In the 1990s, Florida citrus growers produced more than 200 million boxes, but this year that is expected to drop to 133 million, he said. Official forecasts are due October 11. Meanwhile, the costs of producing the fruit have more than doubled, from a cost of $800 an acre to $1,900 per acre in recent years, due to the high costs of controlling the pest. “If we don’t find a cure, it will eliminate the citrus industry in Florida,” said Senator Bill Nelson, a Democrat from Florida. “And we will end up paying $5 for an orange — and it’ll have to be one imported
If we don’t find a cure, it will eliminate the citrus industry in Florida. Modi’s camp beckons opposition parties Less than a month since his anointment, there seems to be a change in the stands of the TDP and TRS. MD INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com
AROUND THE
CITY
HYDERABAD: The anointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as BJP’s Prime Minister’s candidate seems to have its effects on Andhra Pradesh too. Initially, key political parties in the State like main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) were inundated with questions of possible tie up with BJP during the next general elections. But the two key political parties declined of having any truck with the saffron brigade initially. In less than a month after the announcement came, there seems to be a change in the stands of the two political parties. It was clearly evident when
The sudden change in attitude seems to be due to a strong feeling of seeing Narendra Modi as the viable alternative to the corrupt Congress. TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu was confronted with the question of having an alliance with the saffron brigade, he neither denied it nor confirmed the rumours. Meanwhile, TRS supremo K. Chandrasekhara Rao addressing a public meeting at Nizam College on September 29th last month also hinted at joining hands with BJP if Congress failed deliver separate Telangana state within a speci-
fied time. The reason for the sudden change in attitude of the TDP and TRS seems to be the strong feeling of seeing Narendra Modi as the viable alternative to the corrupt Congress at the center. Speaking to Postnoon , TDP senior leader and former state minister E. Peddi Reddy indirectly hinted at having an alliance with BJP in 2014 general elections. “In AP, TDP’s rivals are Congress, TRS and YSRC parties.
We can never have any alliance with these political parties,” he said. Reddy also agreed that Modi would have his impact on regional political parties. “When you compare Narendra Modi with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he would get priority of the public. Apart from this UPA Government headed by Manmohan Singh lost its credibility in the eyes of public due to a series of corruption scams. There is a sense of feeling among
people of the country that Modi would give them corrupt-free government,” he noted. BJP Leader also expressed similar views. Former union Minister of State for Home Affairs and senior BJP Leader Vidyasagar Rao said that the regional political parties bound to have Modi effect for varied reasons. “It’s obvious for Modi to have his effect on regional political parties. He is not only a mass leader but also an abled administrator. He is also free from corruption and corrupt practices. All regional parties are waiting for such a leader to lead the nation,” he said. BJP State General Secretary NVSS Prabhakar also expressed similar views. He felt that Narendra Modis’ tall image as a leader is forcing the regional parties to change their ideologies in their attempt to hunt for a viable alternative. “ Modi’s is the only viable alternative to ruling congress party for any regional political party. They can’t ignore his growing image in the country. It was also evident in Delhi’ BJP rally. People of the country are routing for Modi for the prime minister’s post,” he said. According to Prabhakar, BJP would contest on its own without forming an alliance with anybody. “ We have the potential of growing on our own. We are expanding our base and strengths. In such a case do you think we would have an alliance with any regional party,” he retorted.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS
Spare a thought for the aged In today’s world, with work and an independent lifestyle becoming a top priority for many youngsters, looking after the elders at home has taken a step back. ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Even as we celebrate International Day of Older Persons today, more and more senior citizens we interact with complain of how their efforts that contributed to society are not being appreciated, and how they feel ignored and left out. India is growing in myriad ways; however, despite all the development, we still ignore the people who spent all their lives taking care of us. Going by the statistics of the World Health Organization, today there are at least 600 million people aged 60 years and above worldwide. The statistics say that this total, however, will double by 2025 and will virtually reach two billion by 2050. In today’s fast-aging world, elderly people are increasingly playing a critical role in contributing to the society through their volunteer work, transmitting knowledge and experience and increasing their participation in the paid labour force. The contributions of elderly people can only be ensured and valued if the older persons enjoy adequate levels of health says S Das, director and State head of Help Age India. “The older population is growing every day. On an average, the lifespan of a woman is 64 years and for a man is 63. Even if a person lives for 64 years, they should lead a healthy life, that is all we ask from the government,” says Das. Adding that more than
medicines and food, what elderly people really want is care and the affection, he says, “When elderly people come to our organisation it is really difficult for us to give them relief from the loneliness that they feel. With their own children abandoning them, the pain they go through cannot be expressed. To avoid this in future, youngsters should be inculcated with the values of loving and respecting older peo-

Helpage India has come up with a concept of ‘Student Action for Value Education’ where we teach value education to children across various schools in the City about valuing elderly people.” In today’s world with work and an independent lifestyle becoming a priority for many youngsters, looking after the elders at home has taken a step back, as result of which the number of elderly people approaching homes for the aged have increased. Due to this, there is a shortage of homes and care centres for the elderly in the City, says NM Rajeshwari, founder of Thodu Needa. “Now a days senior citizens form more than 10 per cent of the population. Out of that, more than 50 per cent of them are single women. There are not many organisations in Hyderabad to look after the old. And those that exist are ignored by the government. Today every
district needs 150 beds at every old age home in the State. It is the duty of the government to take the responsibility of senior citizens,” she says. Today various government and private organisations are honouring senior citizens and giving away awards, but more than these what they really need is love and affection. “Love and affection cannot be bought. Old people are neglected in today’s world. It is the duty of every citizen to love and respect them. That is what old people look forward to.”
YOUNG VOLUNTEER ORGANISATIONS ‘Youngistan’, a volunteer organisation has come up with the novel idea of going to various schools and colleges and inculcating moral values in youngsters on respecting the elderly. This group has tied up with vari-
ous schools and will be interacting with students. “These days, with the concept of nuclear families kicking in, the values inculcated from joint families are lost. Children no longer see their elders
looking after their parents and the cycle is continuing. Hence we decided to reach out to youngsters so that these values will be imbibed in them from an early age,” says John Kandru one of the volunteers of the group.
Loneliness among elders is a vicious circle. Because of loneliness, the elders have health issues, and consequently the life span is reduced. It is the duty of every citizen to love and respect them.
The very fact that this day is being observed is because senior citizens are not given the due respect they deserve. People should understand the depth of the problems and come forward to help them.

DEFENCE CO-OPERATION
HALL OF SHAME
US offers to partner India in Javelin missile project The Javelin is a manportable, fire-and-forget, antitank missile employed by dismounted infantry to defeat armoured combat vehicles. WASHINGTON: In a move reflective of growing defence ties between the two, sealed during last week’s visit here of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the US has made India a “groundbreaking collaborative defence proposal” to co-develop with India a next-generation Javelin antitank capability, according to a top defence official. The proposal addresses a key military requirement for both armies and is an unprecedented offer the US has made unique to India, deputy defence secretary Ash Carter, said Monday. Carter, who with Indian National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon heads the two countries’ Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTI), said the US is committed to continuing to put new ideas on the table. He was reviewing Friday’s “successful meeting” between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Barack Obama, “the strong and rapidly growing defense partnership between the US and India, as we execute.... the rebalance, socalled, to the Asia Pacific region.” Asserting that US and India are “destined to be partners on the world stage,” he said, “we’re each big, complicated democra-

In India, Carter also made sure to hear from senior Indian industry representatives about their ideas for increasing private-sector partnerships. The push to reach the next level of defence collaboration and co-development with India comes after 15 months of effort between the countries to overcome bureaucratic obstacles to
such work under DTI, Carter said. Among the advances made possible through DTI, Carter said, involved export controls. “We have demonstrated repeatedly that we can release sensitive technology to India,” Carter said. “We’ve adapted our system in ways that will speed our release process for India,” he added, “especially in the Department of Defence, recognizing that for all partners this process is subject to case-by-case review and there will always be some technologies that we will keep to ourselves.” Areas of progress include technology transfer, licensing agreements, license exceptions, end-use monitoring and others. “We’ve also taken unprecedented steps to identify forwardleaning proposals by industry, from industry on both sides for defence items to be co-produced and-the true measure of our common goal-co-developed by the US and India,” Carter said. These include a maritime helicopter, a naval gun, a surfaceto-air missile system and a scatterable antitank system, all of which were discussed with Indian officials during his recent visit, he said. Rinehart ends trust feud with children Two of Rinehart’s four children have been embroiled in a court case to have her removed as head of the trust which was established by their grandfather, the late Lang Hancock.
SYDNEY: Australia’s richest person Gina Rinehart on Tuesday said she plans to relinquish control of a multi-billion dollar family trust, ending a long-running and bitter feud with two of her children. The mining mogul’s lawyers told a Supreme Court directions hearing in Sydney that her decision meant the two-year dispute was “effectively over”, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. grandfather, the late Lang Hancock. They allege their mother acted “deceitfully” and with “gross dishonesty”. Rinehart denied the accusations. The protracted row stems from a family trust set up by Hancock in 1988 with his four grandchildren as the beneficiaries. His daughter Gina Rinehart was to run the trust, which holds a 23.4 per cent slice of her iron ore company Hancock
Prospecting, until the youngest grandchild turned 25 in 2011. But just days before this date she allegedly sought to delay the payout until 2068, saying it would avoid a huge capital gains tax bill and prompting Hancock and sisters Bianca Rinehart and Hope Rinehart Welker to take court action. Hope Welker later pulled out, but not before documents submitted to the court exposed the bitter battle within the family headed by Gina, whose fortune was estimated earlier this year by Forbes at US$17 billion. Bruce McClintock, a lawyer for Gina Rinehart, said the court
proceedings had placed huge pressure on his client and created “untenable risk” of damage to Hancock Prospecting. “The increased demands on her time in dealing with the... plaintiff’s issues has taken valuable time away from her responsibilities,” he said, according to the Herald. Reports said her decision sets up a showdown for the position of trustee between her four children, who also include Ginia, the only child to side with her mother and who spoke out against her brother and sisters, saying: “This case is motivated entirely by greed.” AFP

WASHINGTON: The commandant of the US Marine Corps on Monday sacked two generals in the wake of a deadly attack last year by the Taliban on a major NATO base in Afghanistan. The extraordinary decision came after a military investigation found Major General Charles Gurganus and Major General Gregg Sturdevant failed to take sufficient action to safeguard the base from a possible assault by insurgents, the Marine Corps said in a statement. It was the first time an American general had been fired over battlefield negligence since the Vietnam War, officials said. The September 14-15 assault on Camp Bastion in southern Afghanistan was one of the most brazen ever pulled off by Taliban insurgents. Two Marines were killed, eight others wounded and six AV-8B Harrier fighter jets destroyed. When she became prime minister Gillard said she decided not to “put in the foreground being a woman” but “as the days in office went on it just seemed to me increasingly I was getting the burden of that sort of misogynist underside”, leading to her blistering sexism speech in parliament last year which went viral worldwide. Over the same period, the average purity of these drugs rose by 60 percent, 11 percent and 161 percent respectively. In 18 European countries, the street price of cocaine and heroin fell by 51 and 74 per cent
between 2000 and 2009. Neither the purity of drugs seized in Europe nor the price of cannabis on the continent was given in the study.
In Australia, meanwhile, the inflation-adjusted price of cocaine fell by 14 percent between 2000 and 2010, and that of heroin and cannabis by 49 percent. “During this time, seizures of these drugs in major domestic markets generally increased,” said the study’s authors, led by Evan Wood of the Urban Health Research Initiative in Vancouver, Canada. “With few exceptions... illegal drug prices have generally decreased while drug purity has generally increased since 1990,” they added. Badger stew dish of the day for British roadkill fan Eating wild animals found dead in the road is usually legal for individuals in England as long as the animals have been run over accidentally, not deliberately. KATHERINE HADDON feedback@postnoon.com DAVIDSTOW: Take one dead badger, head and all, dust with flour and herbs, season and braise for five hours — that’s the recipe for a perfect stew, according to British roadkill eater Arthur Boyt. From dogs and cats to polecats and mice, Boyt insists there is nothing tastier than scooping up a dead animal from the roadside and taking it back to his remote home in Cornwall, southwest England, to skin, gut and cook. Boyt, 74, a nature obsessive whose house is dotted with animal skulls and taxidermy, has been eating roadkill since the 1960s and thinks more people should do the same. “People say ‘oooh, do you really?’ when I say I’m having roadkill. I say ‘well, if you tried it, you would probably enjoy it’,” Boyt tells AFP as a batch of badger stew bubbles away in his kitchen. “It’s not in the taste of the food, it’s in the head. “It’s a threshold you have to step over if you’re going to eat this kind of stuff. this is just meat.’” The retired researcher’s favourite dish is dog — he has eaten two lurchers and a labrador which were hit by cars. He insists he tried to find the owners before eating them. Boyt compares the “smooth, round, sweet” flavour of dog meat to lamb, adding: “I’d drink a red wine with it — possibly a Chianti.” Dog may be his special treat but the chest freezer in his outhouse filled with everything from buzzards to slowworms shows his eclectic tastes.
From dogs and cats to polecats and mice, Boyt insists there is nothing tastier than scooping up a dead animal from the roadside and cooking it. He also has no qualms about eating rotting meat, claiming to have cooked badgers which had been dead for two weeks and picking off maggots and ticks while preparing meat for the pot. “I’ve eaten stuff which is
dark green and stinks — it does appear that if you cook it well, its rottenness does not hinder one’s enjoyment of the animal,” he says. “I have never been ill from eating roadkill. People have been here for a meal and been sick when they got home — but I’m sure that was something else.” ‘Salivary glands, mmm!’ Boyt says he only eats animals which were hit mistakenly, finding their remains himself or receiving tip-offs from neighbours around Bodmin Moor, a dramatic wilderness reputedly haunted by a phantom wildcat. Breaking off from putting the finishing touches to the badger stew, Boyt explains that he only cooks roadkill when his wife, a vegetarian, goes out. “She goes to see her mother once a week so if she stays the

This evening, he has invited an acquaintance to share the meal — 17-year-old Daniel Greenaway, who is looking forward to his first taste of roadkill. “This will be interesting. I’ve been told it’s nice,” says the laconic construction student, sitting down at the dining room table. Meanwhile, Boyt delights both in the flavour and in chomping through cuts not usually noted as delicacies. “This is very tender, it’s a coarser meat like venison,” he says. “It’s sweet, savoury, wellseasoned. MONEY PLANTS
Japan’s luxury fruit masters grow money on trees
An industry of fruit boutiques has defied Japan’s sluggish economy to consistently offer luscious and lavishly tended produce for hefty prices — and it is always in demand. HIROSHI HIYAMA Agence France-Presse TOKYO: With melons that sell for the price of a new car and grapes that go for more than $100 a pop, Japan is a country where perfectly-formed fruit can fetch a fortune. An industry of fruit boutiques has defied Japan’s sluggish economy to consistently offer luscious and lavishly tended produce for hefty prices — and it is always in demand. In July, a single bunch of “Ruby Roman” grapes reportedly sold for 400,000 yen ($4,000), making the plump, crimson berries worth a staggering 11,000 yen each. Every May, a pair of canteloupe melons grown in the north of Hokkaido is auctioned off. They regularly fetch the price of a modest new car. The hammer fell on this year’s pair at a cool 1.6 million yen. While such cases are at the extreme end, top-notch fruit is a valuable commodity in the world of business and as a seasonal gift, signifying just how much importance the giver attaches to the relationship. “Most of our products are for gift purposes, so we collect large and high-grade products from all around Japan,” says Yoshinobu Ishiyama, manager of a branch of Sun Fruits at Tokyo Midtown, a glitzy office-commercial complex that is also home to a Ritz Carlton Hotel. Inside his bright, white-tiled emporium, an array of mouthwatering fruits gives off a heady, brain-tingling aroma as soothing music lulls his well-heeled customers. While Ishiyama doesn’t have anything you could trade for a mid-range auto, he does have a slightly more affordable example of the “Ruby Roman” grapes — a snip at 31,500 yen for a bunch. A single white peach — flavourful, perfectly round and about the size of a newborn baby’s head —goes for 2,625 yen. A bunch of Muscat of Alexandria grapes has a 7,350 yen price tag. Then, there is the unrivalled symbol of expensive gifts in Japan: musk melons. Sitting in individual wooden boxes on the top shelf of a glass-
tude. If the two sides of the exchange are of a broadly similar social standing the gift is reciprocated. A 4,000 yen box of cherries might be given in exchange for a 5,000 yen presentation pack of mangoes. If the giver owes for social favours dispensed through the year, there could be no change from that 16,000 yen musk melon. But the boss who receives it will understand how grateful you are. The giving of high-end fruits creates a lasting impression on Japanese clients, says Tokyobased corporate trainer Farhad Kardan, who was strolling through Sun Fruits choosing possible gifts. “You never forget the experience of having eaten something so delicious. What you pay for is for the quality and the value.” AROUND THE

door refrigerator at the back of the shop, they will set you back as much as 16,000 yen. There are also square watermelons —grown in plastic boxes and usually for decoration — which start at 5,000 yen. As with everything in Japan, presentation is key. It goes without saying that
there are no blemishes. Nothing is bruised, everything is exactly the right shape, as if each fruit has been cast in wax by a master craftsman working off the original blueprints. Of course, not everyone buys their bananas at places like Sun Fruits; much more affordable offerings are on display in the
average supermarket. But to lubricate the wheels of social exchange in a country that has a deeply ingrained culture of gift-giving, nothing matches high-end fruit. At summer and year-end, households send packaged gifts to relatives, business associates and bosses to express their grati-
Despite more than a decade of deflation, prices for fresh food in Japan are considered high by world standards, partially as a result of farming practices and import preferences. Consumers are accustomed to paying a premium on Japanese-grown produce, with many believing it to be safer and better quality than imports. But even so, many openmouthed visitors to Japan wonder: how can a piece of fruit cost so much? Ishiyama says his master musk melon grower Toshiaki Nishihara puts a whole lot of love into each fruit he raises in his computer-controlled greenhouse in Shizuoka prefecture, southwest of Tokyo. He hand-pollinates his crop and selects only one melon on each plant so that all the nutrients, sugar and juice are concentrated in the chosen fruit. Like their $16,000 cousins from Hokkaido, the best-quality melons are perfect spheres with a smooth, evenly patterned rind. “The prices are very high because of the care and cost that go into the fruits,” Ishiyama said.

US govt shut down After a day of furious brinkmanship President Obama’s Democrats and rival Republicans, the White House ordered federal agencies to initiate their shutdown. BY MICHAEL MATHES & STEPHEN COLLINSON feedback@postnoon.com WASHINGTON: The United States lurched into a dreaded government shutdown early Tuesday for the first time in 17 years, triggering agency closures and hundreds of thousands of furloughs as Congress missed a deadline to pass a budget. Ten minutes before midnight bells rang throughout a deeply divided Washington, and after a day of furious brinkmanship President Barack Obama’s Democrats and rival Republicans, the White House ordered federal agencies to initiate their shutdown procedures. “We urge Congress to act quickly to pass a Continuing Resolution to provide a shortterm bridge that ensures sufficient time to pass a budget for the remainder of the fiscal year,” Management and Budget director Sylvia Mathews Burwell said in a memo to agencies. Lawmakers had hardly haggled over budgetary matters in the final frantic hours before the deadline -- the end of the fiscal year. Instead, they argued over whether to link the budget pact with efforts to delay Obama’s health care law. “This is an unnecessary blow to America,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the Senate floor two minutes after the witching hour. As a mood of crisis enveloped Washington no compromise emerged to head off the first such disaster since 1996. Instead, the Democratic-led Senate and Republican House of Representatives played a futile game, sending funding bills between them that were doomed to fail. Obama accused Republicans of holding America at ransom with their “extreme” political
demands, while his opponents struck back at his party’s supposed arrogance. Around 800,000 government workers are expected to be sent home, government services are to be slashed and monuments such as the Statue of Liberty and national parks will close. The crisis is rooted in an attempt by “Tea Party” Republicans in the House to make passage of a new government budget conditional on thwarting Obama’s signature
health reform law. The Democratic-led Senate and the president have repeatedly rejected this strategy and urged Republicans to pass an extension to government funding to temporarily stave off the shutdown. In a deeper sense, the shutdown is the most serious crisis yet in a series of rolling ideological skirmishes between Democrat Obama and House Republicans over the size of the US government and its role in
national life. “One faction of one party in one house of Congress in one branch of government doesn’t get to shut down the entire government just to re-fight the results of an election,” Obama said, referring to his own reelection. “You don’t get to extract a ransom for doing your job, for doing what you’re supposed to be doing anyway,” he said, in a stern televised statement at the White House. But on a day of accelerating brinkmanship, Republicans doubled down on their bid to gut Obamacare, as the health care law, the most sweeping social legislation in decades, is known. With just three hours to go, House lawmakers passed a bill that would delay the individual mandate, which forces all Americans to buy health insurance under the new law, for a year. “It’s a matter of fairness for all Americans,” said Republican House speaker John Boehner, who has struggled to control the riotous anti-government Tea Party faction of his caucus. But the Senate, which must also sign off on budget measures, immediately rejected the bill. That led House leaders, less than an hour before midnight, to move to go to conference, meaning the two chambers would appoint formal negotiators to thrash out a budget deal. That process was already showing signs that it would take hours to coordinate, and Reid sent the Senate into recess until 9:30 am Tuesday. “We said we’d go to conference if they wouldn’t shut the government down, but they’re shutting the government down,” number two Senate Democrat Dick Durbin told AFP.

Britain’s Tories struggle to counter UKIP threat ALICE RITCHIE feedback@postnoon.com
P
rime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party is increasingly nervous about the threat posed by the euro-sceptic UK Independence Party, which could split the centre-right vote and deny the Tories victory at the 2015 general election. The Conservatives have long been plagued by internal tensions over Europe, but much of the talk at their annual conference in Manchester, northwest England, is about the external menace from UKIP. “They are a real threat,” Conservative lawmaker Bill Cash told AFP after a bruising encounter with UKIP’s charismatic leader Nigel Farage at a fringe meeting. Cash is one of the party’s most euro-sceptic MPs, but Farage dismissed him as “out of touch” when he suggested UKIP back the Tories to prevent handing power to the opposition Labour party. Mayor of London Boris Johnson repeated the warning, albeit in his usual jocular style: “UKIP if you want to — David Cameron’s not for kipping.” UKIP has no MPs but it came third in local elections in May and is polling at 11 per cent, ahead of the Liberal Democrats, the junior partners in the Conservative-led coalition. The challenge it poses has come into sharp focus ahead of the European Parliament elections in May, when UKIP has a chance of winning the biggest share of the vote with its anti-immigration, anti-European message. BLOODY PAKISTAN ATTACKS SPELL GLOOM DIPLOMACY BOTCHED Saad Khan
T
hree weeks after Pakistan’s main political parties backed the idea of talks with the country’s Taliban militants, the plan looks in deep trouble, hit hard by a wave of bloody attacks. In the space of a week, the northwestern city of Peshawar has suffered three major bombings, killing 142 people — the vast majority of them civilians. Hurried denials issued by the main umbrella Tehreek-eTaliban Pakistan (TTP) group hint at divisions within the organisation and the rise of splinter factions keen to pursue their own agenda rather than follow the central leadership. Peshawar is no stranger to bloodshed. It lies on the edge of Pakistan’s tribal areas and has frequently been hit by bombings and shootings. But the brutality of the recent attacks: a suicide bombing on a church service, a bomb on a bus carrying government staff home after work and the latest, a powerful car bomb targeting a busy market on Sunday, has shocked locals. “The government should publicly hang the killers of inno-
cent people,” Gul Mohammad, a Peshawar junk shop owner, told AFP. “I have a very simple question: why is the government so reluctant to launch an army operation against the Taliban?” The TTP insists it targets only legitimate military assets in its fight against the Pakistani state and says the recent attacks are a conspiracy to scotch the proposed talks. But a Taliban commander in
the country’s northwest admitted the prospect of negotiations had led to division within the movement, which has pledged allegiance to one-eyed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Omar as well as Al-Qaeda. “There are even more differences on several other issues and you know Ismatullah Muaweea has also been sacked by our main leadership,” the commander told AFP. EDITORIALS Pharma industry sent under the weather
T
he long standoff between the drug price regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority and pharmaceutical companies gets a decisive twist with the pharma companies being given 15 days to respond to price revision notifications. Many in the industry have earlier challenged drug price fixation orders, in the process delaying introduction of low-priced medicines in the market. This despite a warning that companies found selling drugs at a price more than the notified ceiling price face action. It is not that the pharma industry has been subjected to a raw deal in this regard. To save companies from payment of excise duty twice while re-labelling existing stocks, the finance ministry had issued a notification exempting excise duty on re-printing, re-labelling or repacking of essential drugs within 45 days of NPPA’s price notification. They may be dealing with medicines, and essential and life-saving drugs, but they are essentially commercial establishments. It is good that we have regulating authorities to bridle them.

Long live our judiciary
T
he man who made significant economic reforms, and did so with an imitable sense of humour has been mellowed down, silenced actually, after it transpired that he had a personal interest in the gains of those reforms. Great, for he happens to be a politician, who think are unassailable in our country! But what is alarming is that the case ground on for over 17 years, after being heard in a special court at that. Should govt administrative offices be turned into makeshift courts? At least corruption will reduce!

ROSHNI DONNY feedback@postnoon.com
T
oday we have the Rupee vs. dollar rate rising, onion prices soaring, rickshaw rates hiking, country’s population multiplying, yet amongst all this, do start-up companies stand a chance? Many people are of the misconception that a start-up company is formed by someone who doesn’t want to find work or least of all is rejected from a million other jobs and finds solace in starting his own. To put all their boxed minds to rest, a start-up company is generally formed when the person in charge known as the owner/proprietor, places himself in a position where he is accountable for his actions, responsible for his reactions and becomes an identity among the unknown. The initial years of a start-up company are like watching a toddler taking his first steps. It is the first few years during which the tensile strength of the company is tested. In every field right from financial to business development, every aspect is under the microscope, scrutinised, reviewed and acted upon. During times like these, many startups which fail to pull together shut shops and look further ahead for better prospects. But the ones that make it, although merely a handful, continue to stay strong and go on to build an
Those who create start-ups are not those discarded by the mainstream. They are those who wish to walk on a different road.
empire. The most common and reliable means of marketing a start-up has always been by word of mouth. This technique has proved to be in fact the most reliable and trustworthy means of marketing. Word-of-mouth also acts as a double-edged sword, for if good publicity can spread like wild fire, so too can bad publicity. Negative feedbacks and reviews should be taken in as effective criticism and should be considered as an experience. Charles Darwin stated the race of life is dominated by the survival of the fittest. Adding to that, Milend Singh Chhawara, founder of Tangent Entertainment, a start-up says, “The key to surviving in an economy like ours is to be innovative, be persistent and never give up in what you believe in.” Patience, a virtue absent in most — a clear example being traffic jams — is one of the most key elements one must possess. It takes patience and persistence from within to run and manage a company. Imagine what the world would be like had Warren Buffet, Richard Branson, Ingvar Kamprad and many more other innovators had decided to call it quits within six months. Every day hundreds of thousands of children are born, and for many their fate is decided that very moment, but it is only a bunch that decide to write their own destiny and make a mark of their own in the world: they become entrepreneurs.

DELHI HOSPITAL MARKS HEART DAY WITH WALKATHON

HEALTHY HEART
Understanding a woman’s heart Women are at a higher risk of suffering from heart diseases as compared to men says Dr. Sridevi of Care Hospitals
T
he word heart attack conjures an archetypal image. It is likely to be associated with a slightly overweight middle- aged male clutching his heart and sweating profusely, an effect of obstructed blood vessels. Contrary to popular perception, women are just as likely to suffer heart attacks. The so-called protective effects of female hormones till menopause are overridden by smoking and other risk factors. Currently, incidence of heart disease in women stands at 11 per cent. By 2020, the incidence of heart disease has been predicted to be same among the sexes. Women are also more likely to present atypical symptoms leading to late diagnoses or misdiagnoses. Women do suffer from chest pain but are less likely to have occluded coronary arteries. Clearly, heart disease in women needs to be understood as an entity by itself and cannot be generalised. Certain risk factors for heart disease are common to both males and females. These include cigarette smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity (particularly abdominal obesity), poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, family history of cardiovascular disease, age, and stress. Some risk factors like pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, PCOD or polycystic ovarian disease and some autoimmune and collagen vascular diseases increase the risk of heart disease or associated metabolic diseases in women.
SYMPTOMS OF HEART DISEASE IN WOMEN n
n
n
Shortness of breath, often without chest pain of any kind Flu-like symptoms — specifically nausea, clamminess or cold sweats Unexplained fatigue, weak-
ness or dizziness Pain in the chest, upper back, shoulders, neck, or jaw n Feelings of anxiety, loss of appetite, discomfort Common pre-heart attack symptoms include unusual fatigue, sleep disturbance, shortness of breath, chest pain, indigestion, anxiety, and pain in shoulder blade or upper back n
What the statistics mean for women? Women are more likely than men to have a heart attack without chest pain. Recurrence of heart attack after first episode within 6 yrs is 18 per cent in men, 35 per cent in women. Women are twice as much at risk of death after a bypass surgery compared to men. Can we prevent cardiovascular disease? The heart healthy diet is designed to decrease sodium and saturated fat which are all closely linked to high blood cholesterol and an increased risk of heart disease. It also encourages the increased intake
of monounsaturated fat, Omega 3 fatty acids and soluble fiber which helps to lower blood cholesterol levels. n Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. (5 servings of colored vegetables and fruits). n Eat a variety of grain products ( choose whole grains over refined.) n Choose nonfat or low-fat dairy products. n Use low-fat meats and lean cuts. Fish is healthier than red meat.
EXERCISE n
n n
n
Maintain a level of physical activity that keeps you fit and matches the calories you eat. Regular exercise can halve the risk of heart disease. With regular exercise, blood pressure in those with hypertension is reduced by as much as 20mms Hg. Someone who is inactive has a greater risk of having heart disease as someone who smokes, has high blood pressure or has high cholesterol

Technology GADGETS
Glasses that translate menus NTT Docomo was showing off its latest development where cameras, computers and know-how combine to give the wearer a whole different view of what they are looking at. CHIBA: Augmented reality glasses that can translate a menu in real time were unveiled at a Japanese gadget fair Monday, with promises they could be ready for visitors to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. NTT Docomo was showing off its latest development where cameras, computers and know-how combine to give the wearer a whole different view of what they are looking at. One function of the gizmo overlays the wearer’s first language onto unfamiliar text, making signs and menus instantly understandable — a boon to travellers in Japan, where foreign-language menus are not commonly found off the tourist trail. “Character recognition
technology enables instant language translation for users travelling abroad and reading restaurant menus and other documents,” Docomo said in a statement, as it showcased the gadget at CEATEC Japan. Another application turns any flat surface into a touchscreen, with a finger ring relaying positioning information to the device that lets wearers “touch” tags that only they can see, perhaps to perform an Internet search. Other uses include facial recognition that is intended to look up someone’s identity — and job title — from a smartphone’s directory. AGENCIES
TECH TALK
Facebook expands ‘Graph Search’ within social network SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook said Monday it was expanding the capabilities of its “Graph Search” function to help users navigate and find information within postings on the world’s biggest social network. “Starting today, Graph Search will include posts and status updates. Now you will be able to search for status updates, photo captions, check-ins and comments to find things shared with you,” the company said in a statement. “Search for the topics you’re interested in and see what your friends are saying, like ‘Dancing with the Stars’ or ‘Posts about Dancing with the Stars by my friends.’” Facebook launched the service in January in an effort to help members better navigate the vast amount of information
on Facebook, which is not available on Web search engines such as Google. But at the time, it lacked detailed information from member postings. Facebook emphasized that the new effort is not Web search, but can help find certain information archived within the network and in the content of friends. It uses Microsoft’s Bing search engine to scour content in Facebook. The company said the expanded Graph Search is rolling out slowly to “a small group of people who currently have Graph Search and we will continue to improve this experience by listening to feedback.” Facebook has said Graph Search will respect privacy, and that people can only see content that has been shared with them or publicly available posts. Apple now ‘world’s best brand’
This marks the first time Coca-Cola missed the top spot on the ‘best global brand report’. PARIS: Coca-Cola has lost its crown as the world’s best brand, a closely watched survey said on Monday, unseated by the iconic iPhone and iPad maker Apple. This marks the first time the soft drink missed the top spot on the “best global brand report”, a line-up created in 2000 by marketing consultancy Interbrand, a unit of the O m n i c o m advertising conglomerate. “Every so often, a company changes our lives — not just with its products, but with its ethos,” said Jez Frampton, Interbrand’s chief executive. “This is why, following Coca-Cola’s 13-year run at the top of Best Global Brands, Apple now ranks #1,” he said. In fact, Coca-Cola dropped two places in 2013, also losing to
Google, the search engine, which came in second place. Apple has always been on the list, beginning at #36 in 2000, but has slowly climbed the ranks. But Interbrand warned Apple needed to keep a close eye on archrival Samsung (#9), especially on the crucial smartphone market. “To maintain its number one position over the next year, Apple will have to slow rival Samsung’s momentum in the mobile market and never lose sight of what it does best: ‘Think different’,” the consultancy said. According to Interbrand, the Apple brand is worth $98.31 billion, a 28 percent rise from the previous year with the Google brand weighing in at $93.29 billion. AFP

China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corp (CPMIEC) beat out competition from a US partnership of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, Russia’s Rosoboronexport, and the ItalianFrench consortium Eurosamrs in the tender, worth $4 billion according to Turkish media. The Pentagon cited 363 problems in the design and manufacture of the costly Joint Strike Fighter, the hitech warplane that is supposed to serve as the backbone of the future American fleet. For the US and eight countries backing the project, the report raises fresh questions about the technology.
NYC GOES WIRELESS NEW YORK CITY: Free Internet access will be given to more neighborhoods across New York as the Big Apple aims to build a “wireless corridor” designed to boost business, officials announced. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that from December free web access would be available in neighborhoods in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan. New York has already created free Internet zones in around 20 parks and the Chelsea area of downtown Manhattan, the latter at the initiative of Google. Bloomberg said the “wireless corridor” scheme would be funded by both the private and public sectors.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

AMERICA’S CUP
NBA
Canada set to host NBA all-star game TORONTO: The National Basketball Association announced Monday that Toronto has been selected to host the 2016 all-star game, the first time the showcase event has been held outside the United States. "We are thrilled that Toronto is hosting," said Deputy commissioner Adam Silver. "As the site of the first game ever in the NBA, Toronto is an ideal location for this global basketball celebration." The game will be played on February 14 at Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Raptors and the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto hosted the firstever Basketball Association of America game on November 1, 1946, in which the Toronto Huskies lost to the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens. The BAA was the forerunner of the NBA. The 2015-16 season marks the Raptors' 20th anniversary.
Vintner challenges US
Australian winemaker Bob Oatley's Hamilton Island Yacht Club was formally announced as the Challenger of Record to current holders Oracle Team USA. MARTIN PARRY Agence France-Presse SYDNEY: Australian winemaker Bob Oatley's Hamilton Island Yacht Club was Tuesday formally announced as the Challenger of Record to current holders Oracle Team USA for the next America's Cup. "We are delighted to have Hamilton Island Yacht Club and the Oatleys leading Australia back into the America's Cup for the first time since 2000," said America's Cup liaison Tom Ehman. The announcement comes just days after Team USA, owned by billionaire software mogul Larry Ellison, completed one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history to clinch the 162-yearold trophy with victory over Team New Zealand. The defending champions, skippered by Australian James Spithill, crossed the finish in San Francisco 44 seconds ahead of the New Zealanders to claim the coveted prize 9-8, having fought back from 8-1 down in the series. Billionaire Oatley and son Sandy submitted an official challenge immediately after the final
race, on the 30th anniversary of Australia famously winning the America's Cup in 1983, said Ehman, who is vice commodore of holders Golden Gate Yacht Club. Being the Challenger of Record means that Hamilton Island, on the Greet Barrier Reef, has the right to work with the Golden Gate Yacht Club and set the laws of the next Cup regatta, while representing all other challengers in dealings with Oracle Team USA. The Australian entry, however, will have to triumph in a challenger series before they can contest for the America's Cup. Oatley and a succession of his yachts named Wild Oats have dominated ocean racing in Australia for years, winning six of the past eight Sydney-Hobart races. An Australian team led by Oatley, one of the pioneers of Australian wine exports who today heads a business that operates in areas ranging from cattle to luxury tourism, also won the last Admiral's Cup, widely regarded as the world's top prize in ocean racing. success in the America's Cup, the Admiral's Cup and Olympic yachting, and as proud Australians, we think it is time for our nation to be back in our sport's pinnacle event," Bob
Oatley said. "The recently completed America's Cup in San Francisco has revolutionised the sport for sailors and fans, and we were excited to see how many Australians played key roles on the teams and in the regatta organisation." Australia last competed in the event in 2000, when veteran yachtsman Syd Fischer put together the Young Australia challenge that failed to get through to the final Cup series. Prior to that, Australia had not entered a campaign since Kookaburra II lost to Stars and Stripes off Fremantle in 1987 in defence of their 1983 title, which was won by Perth businessman Alan Bond's Australia II, breaking the United States' 132-year stranglehold on the title. Ehman said the specifics of the race, including the dates, type of boat, format and rules, were subject to negotiation between the two teams. Sandy Oatley told Australia's Channel Seven he expects the details to be formalised early next year with a view to the next event being held in about three years' time. AFP

PRESIDENTS CUP
Hideki, Spieth set for Cup debut Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and America’s Jordan Spieth are all geared up for thier Presidents Cup debuts as US and International teams arrived for the biennial golf showdown.
JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse COLUMBUS: Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (in pic) and American Jordan Spieth, young stars set for Presidents Cup debuts, practiced Monday at Muirfield Village as US and International teams arrived for the biennial golf showdown. The Americans have a 7-1-1 edge in the rivalry and four wins in a row over the non-European side in the Ryder Cup-styled event that tees off Thursday at the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, home of the US PGA’s Memorial tournament. Matsuyama, youngest of the Internationals at 21, played his first practice round at the 7,354yard, par-72 layout ahead of a team meeting. He is among seven rookies on captain Nick Price’s 12-man squad. “What they lack in experience, they are going to make up for in zeal and enthusiasm,” Price said. “We’re excited. We want to be competitive.” Matsuyama figures to be that
and more after winning the 2010 Asian Amateur crown, claiming low amateur honors at the 2011 Masters with a share of 27th and winning twice this year in Japan. Matsuyama shared sixth at the British Open and shared 10th at the US Open, the best modernera finish for a first-time player at either major event. He also shared 19th at the PGA

Champtionship on his way to qualifying for next year’s US PGA Tour. His final-round 67 at the US Open matched the last day’s low score at Merion. “When he came over and played in the US Open, I kept a very sharp eye on him to see how he would handle the pressure of playing in a major
championship,” Price said. “His first outing in as a professional in the US Open in a major, he finished 10th. That really got my attention. I knew this was a guy who was not afraid of the big moment. “Then to watch him play at the British Open, he had another
really strong finish for a rookie, and then also at the PGA. He had the cut at all three majors and he has put a lot of good rounds together. He is going to be a huge asset to our team.” While Matsuyama is the only Asian player on the global squad, assistant captain Shigeki
Maruyama will be there to help ease his transition into the pairs and team formats. “I just want him to feel that very early on that he is going to be very much a big part of our team,” Price said. “His English is not great, but I think he understands a lot of it, so it’s going to be great to have Maruyama there to help interpret the feelings and what we talk about in the players room and the meetings.” The Americans counter with a rising superstar of their own in 20-year-old Spieth, who won the John Deere Classic last July to secure a spot on the US PGA Tour. He was named the tour’s Rookie of the Year last week. “It has just been a lot of confidence in myself, a lot of belief,” Spieth said. “On a stage like the Presidents Cup I’m super stoked.” Spieth is the youngest-ever member of the US Presidents Cup squad. He won the Deere title at age 19, becoming the youngest winner on the US PGA Tour since 1931.
CHINA OPEN
Reigning champ Azarenka out
NEIL CONNOR Agence France-Presse BEIJING: Reigning China Open champion Victoria Azarenka lamented her lack of preparation after crashing out of Beijing in the first round Monday -- her second early exit in a week. The world number two also blamed her mental fragility for the 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 loss to Andrea Petkovic, a match in which she was often seen cursing to herself as she committed a staggering 15 double faults. The second seed had earlier in September lost the US Open final to world number one Serena Williams before losing to her sister Venus in the second round of the Pan Pacific Open last week, a match in which she claimed to have felt ill. The Belarusian said her defeats in Tokyo and Beijing could be attributed to her tough schedule as the season draws to a close.

“I probably should have taken a longer break and just prepare myself,” the 24-yearold told reporters after her latest defeat. “I don’t feel like I was ready to play,” she said,
adding that “the preparation wasn’t there enough, so I cannot deny that. “It’s just my mistakes for not paying much attention after the US Open, how I managed my time and how I man-
aged my health.” Azarenka admitted she felt frustrated in the match against the 2011 finalist, which was held at Beijing’s National Tennis Centre. “In terms of emotions, yeah there was a lot of emotions and frustration that I let myself get into because I wasn’t doing the right thing,” she said, responding to questions about her muttering to herself during the match. “And with the serve, you know, trying new things, working it during the tournament....it was just off rhythm.” Azarenka rarely showed glimpses of the form which helped her claim the title last year, at times appearing sluggish against the German, who is ranked 43rd in the world. Petkovic needed medical attention after appearing to be dizzy during the second set, but regained her composure in the third set when a double fault from Azarenka left her serving for the match.
Fifth seed Sara Errani had no problems in her secondround match, defeating her Japanese opponent Misaki Doi 6-3, 6-2. China’s Zhang Shuai continued her sizzling form, defeating compatriot Peng Shuai 6-3, 6-3 to set up a second-round match against tenth seed Roberta Vinci. Wildcard Zhang won her first WTA title in Guangzhou earlier this month. The 24-year-old recruited her own coach in July, following Chinese star Li Na’s example in leaving the tightly controlled state sports system, raising hopes that she can emulate the success of the 2011 French Open winner. It was a successful day for three Serbian players. Eighth seed Jelana Jankovic needed three sets to overcome Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Compatriot Ana Ivanovic claimed victory over Italian Flavia Pennetta 7-6 (11/9), 6-1.

COURTING TROUBLE
Longer wait for Srinivasan
Unanimously re-elected, Srinivasan will have to wait for at least another week before taking charge again of the BCCI as the Supreme Court declined to revoke its order. NEW DELHI: Narayanaswami Srinivasan will have to wait for at least another week before again taking charge of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the Supreme Court Monday declined to revoke its order restraining him from assuming office on his re-election. With Monday’s decision, Srinivasan has to stay away from office till Oct 7, when the apex court again takes up the matter, while other office bearers took immediate charge. Srinivasan was on Sunday unanimously re-elected as the BCCI president for a third year in office. In the absence of Srinivasan, board secretary Sanjay Patel cleared the senior team that was selected in Chennai on Sunday. BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla told IANS that the Supreme Court’s postponement of the case won’t affect the running of the board. “It is a matter of only four days. For the time being, it is status quo,” Shukla told IANS.
Gurunath ran the CSK team: Hussey
NEW DELHI: BCCI president N Srinivasan might have called his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan as just a cricket enthusiast but Chennai Super Kings opener Michael Hussey has said that the betting accused official was actually running the IPL team. In his book, Underneath The Southern Cross, Hussey has said that Team owner N Srinivasan had handed the control of the team to Gurunath. “Our owner was Indian Cements, headed by Mr Srinivasan,” Hussey wrote in his book.
Meanwhile, the apex court bench headed by Justice A.K. Patnaik asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to furnish its proposal under which Srinivasan will be allowed to discharge his duties mandated by the BCCI constitution while completely keeping off the probe into allegations against his son-in-law Gurunath

T&T still alive, SRH knocked out
AHMEDABAD: Trinidad and Tobago kept their chances alive in the Champions League Twenty20 as they won their Group B match against the Titans by six runs (D/L method) while Sunrisers Hyderabad were knocked out after their match against Brisbane Heat was abandoned without a ball being bowled at the Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera here Monday. Chasing Trinidad and Tobago’s 188/6, the Titans were 153/6 in 17 overs when the skies opened up and rains marred the match, leading to a DuckworthLewis decision to decide its fate. Overall, the Titans fell short by six runs. Both the teams now have eight points, though Titans have played out all four matches while the Caribbean side still have a match to go. T&T have a chance to enter the semifinals while Titans’ chances depend on the match between Chennai Super Kings and T&T.
Meiyappan of involvement in spot fixing and betting in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). The court said this after the BCCI pleaded that Srinivasan be allowed to discharge certain responsibilities as the board chief. Senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for Cricket
wanted the SC to issue an interim ban preventing Srinivasan from being a member of any committee of the Indian cricket board. The petition was filed on the ground that Srinivasan’s son-inlaw Gurunath Meiyappan is being probed by Mumbai police for placing bets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The apex court allowed Srinivasan to contest the election but said that he cannot discharge his duties. In the course of the hearing, the court observed that “so many things are coming about IPL and something seems wrong with the apex cricketing body ... why it has lost its credibility”, Justice Patnaik asked BCCI counsel C.A. Sundaram. “Only things we have to see how far you as BCCI president will affect the probe or prosecution,” Justice Patnaik asked Sundaram. Sundaram urged the court to partially lift its bar as there were certain things that can be done in BCCI only by the president. IANS
Put into bat, T&T had a poor start as opener Lendl Simmons was bowled by Marchant de Lange for a duck. But man of the match Evin Lewis (70) and Darren Bravo (63) put the team’s innings back on track by striking a 109-run second wicket partnership. Lewis thrashed the Titans bowlers, hitting seven boundaries and five sixes in his 35-ball knock while Bravo hit five fours and four sixes. After the duo got out, the Titans bowlers did well to not allow another big partnerships.
Backlash not a bother LONDON:Former England captain Mike Gatting has laughed off suggestions Alastair Cook’s men could face an Australia ‘backlash’ when they defend the Ashes ‘Down Under. Despite losing the
recent Ashes series in England by a convincing 3-0 margin, the Australia camp have been in bullish mood ahead of the return campaign which starts with the first Test in Brisbane in November. But Gatting, who led England to Ashes glory in Australia in 1986/87, told BBC Sport on Monday: “What are they (Australia) going to backlash us (England) with?” “Have they found another Shane Warne or a Glenn McGrath?” added former batsman Gatting, famously dismissed by leg-spin great Warne’s ‘ball of the century’ at Old Trafford in 1993. “Yes, the Aussies did improve over the course of the series but you would expect them to improve because Australians are proud cricketers. “They had a good bowling attack but sadly their batsmen let them down. “We had the quality to win the important
moments, with the ball or with the bat,” Gatting said of an England side that has now won three successive Ashes series. “We were quite consistent, but the Australians had inconsistencies throughout. “If the two teams are pretty much the same, I wouldn’t expect the result to be any different.” Gatting has spent much of his career at Lord’s, first as a player with Middlesex and then England before coaching Middlesex and becoming an England selector. Most recently, he has worked at the ground as an administrator with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). But Tuesday will see the 56year-old Gatting extend his relationship with the ‘home of cricket’ still further when he becomes President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which owns Lord’s and still retains global responsibility for the sport’s Laws or rules. WENGER IS BEST BOSS IN ENGLAND SAYS BENITEZ
Napoli manager Rafael Benitez hailed Arsene Wenger as the best boss in the Premier League ahead of his side's clash against Arsenal on Tuesday. After losing their first domestic fixture to Aston Villa, Arsenal have since gone on a five-match winning run to storm to the top of the table.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

BIG GAMES, BIG STAGE
Manchester City's home clash with Pep Guardiola's reigning European champions Bayern Munich will capture the imagination of most, while the pressure is on David Moyes as Manchester United face Shakhtar Donetsk. PARIS: While Manchester City's home clash with Pep Guardiola's reigning European champions Bayern Munich will capture the imagination of most, we take a look at the all the matches scheduled to take place on Wednesday
GROUP A
Bayer Leverkusen (GER) v Real Sociedad (ESP) Both Leverkusen and Real Sociedad are looking to get their campaigns up and running after suffering defeats on matchday one. Leverkusen went down 4-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in their opening game, while the Basque side lost 2-0 at home against Shakhtar Donetsk. Sami Hyypia's team will fancy their chances of registering all three points at the BayArena, however, fresh as they are from a third straight Bundesliga win on Saturday against Hannover. While they are enjoying their best start to a league season, Real, in contrast, have gone six games without a win, their worst sequence of results in two years, and coach Jagoba Arrasate is without Esteban Granero and the influential Xabi Prieto for the trip to Germany. Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) v Manchester United (ENG) A trip to deepest Ukraine is surely the last thing that David Moyes wanted as the pressure builds on the Scotsman following Manchester United's worst start to a domestic campaign in 24 years. United's 2-1 home loss to West Bromwich Albion on
Saturday was their third defeat already in just six Premier League games, but at least Moyes oversaw a 4-2 win against Bayer Leverkusen in his opening Champions League group game in charge a fortnight ago. Wayne Rooney scored twice in that game and Moyes - who has admitted his side lack sufficient world-class talent to win the Champions League - will need the England star at his best in the Donbass Arena. Shakhtar needed a late comeback to draw 2-2 away to unheralded local rivals Metalurg at the weekend but their European opener was an impressive 2-0 win at Real Sociedad and they have previous against English opposition, beating Chelsea at home last season.
GROUP B
Real Madrid (ESP) Copenhagen (DEN)
v
FC
After the humiliation of losing the Madrid derby at the weekend, Real coach Carlo Ancelotti knows the importance of getting back to winning ways in Europe. The visit of a Copenhagen side who sit second from bottom of the Danish league and lost 3-2 to Brondby at the weekend should provide the perfect opportunity for the Spanish giants, although Stale Solbakken's men did hold Juventus in their opening Group B game. Iker Casillas will make his first appearance at the Santiago
Bernabeu in almost nine months as Ancelotti again gives the nod to the Spain captain ahead of Diego Lopez in goal in Europe. Gareth Bale could also make his first start at home for his new club, who thumped Galatasaray 6-1 away last time out.
Juventus (ITA) v Galatasaray (TUR) After being held by Copenhagen two weeks ago, Italian champions Juventus chase a first win in Group B as they play host to Galatasaray, who are seeking an improvement on their 6-1 thumping at the hands of Real Madrid. Antonio Conte's Juve, who won the last of their two European Cups in 1996, beat city rivals Torino 1-0 at the weekend thanks to a Paul Pogba strike and remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, even if they trail Roma by two points at the top of Serie A. The Turks come into the game with a new coach who is familiar with taking on Juve. Former Lazio, Inter Milan and Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was on Monday appointed as the replacement for the sacked Fatih Terim. His remit is to revive a side who sit in mid-table in their domestic league with just one win from five games.
GROUP C
Anderlecht (BEL) v Olympiakos (GRE) Belgian champions Anderlecht and Greek title-
holders Olympiakos are, on paper, the outsiders to qualify from Group C and both were beaten on matchday one. Anderlecht went down 2-0 away to Benfica while Olympiakos were outclassed in a 4-1 home loss to Paris SaintGermain. The Belgians have a proud history and beat AEK Athens home and away when they last faced Greek opponents in the Europa League two years ago, but John Van den Brom's men are fourth in their domestic Pro League, nine points behind leaders Standard, and appear ill-equipped to make an impact in this competition. Olympiakos, who have lost 99 times in Europe, are top of the Greek Super League without defeat and may fancy their chances of recording an away win here. Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) v Benfica (POR) Paris Saint-Germain underlined their status as Group C favourites by thumping Olympiakos in Greece two weeks ago, and can take a big step towards qualifying for the last 16 by beating Benfica at the Parc des Princes. Laurent Blanc's side have struggled to convince so far this season, but remain unbeaten in all competitions while Benfica who beat Anderlecht 2-0 in their opening game - are only fifth in the Portuguese top flight, five points behind leaders Porto. However, the Lisbon club can expect a warm backing in the French capital, which is home to a large Portuguese population. PSG will be without captain Thiago Silva due to injury as they chase revenge for a defeat to the same team in the Europa League last 16 in 2011.
GROUP D
CSKA Moscow (RUS) v Viktoria Pilsen (CZE) The poor state of the Arena Khimki pitch in Moscow led to this match being moved 700
kilometres to St Petersburg. CSKA and the Czech champions both lost their opening games and are expected to fight it out for third place in Group D behind Bayern Munich and Manchester City. CSKA's preparations for this encounter have not been the best - they lost 2-0 at Terek Grozny at the weekend and have failed to win, or even score, in their last three domestic matches. In contrast, Pavel Vrba's Pilsen are still unbeaten in the Czech league and have won five and lost two of their last seven European away games. Manchester City (ENG) v Bayern Munich (GER) This encounter at the Etihad Stadium promises to be fascinating, with City manager Manuel Pellegrini coming up against Bayern's Pep Guardiola again. The pair are familiar with one another from their time in Spain, in particular when they occupied the dugouts at Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively in 2009-10. The two Group D favourites meet on the back of wins in their opening matches, with
City triumphing away to Viktoria Pilsen while Bayern beat CSKA Moscow at home. Goals from David Silva and Yaya Toure gave City a 2-0 win when they played host to Bayern in this competition two years ago, but the English side have failed to progress beyond the group stage in either of the last two years while Bayern are the reigning European champions.
