DRINK DRIVING

CRIME

Beware, Bacchus’ devotees! Baby dinos crawled on all fours

Traffic police are creating a databank of drink and drive cases which will be linked to the crime bureau. Habitual offenders are in for an unpleasant situation. SRINIVAS SETTY

LONDON: A research suggests that Psittacosaurus, the 'parrot dinosaur' walked on four feet and then two feet some 100 million years ago in present China. It would have grown up much like the modern humans, at first exploring its world on all fours, like a toddler, and then graduating to upright motion, researchers said. Using a combination of bio-mechanical analysis and bone histology, palaeontologists from Beijing, Bristol, and Bonn have shown how one of the best-known dinosaurs switched from four feet to two as it grew. AROUND THE

WORLD

The one-year-old had long arms and short legs, and scuttled about on all fours soon after hatching. The bone sections showed that the arm bones were growing fastest when the animals were aged one to three years. Then, from four to six years, arm growth slowed down, and the leg bones showed a massive growth spurt, meaning they ended up twice as long as the arms, necessary for an animal that stood up on its hind legs as an adult. This study, the first of its kind, shows how much information is locked in the bones of dinosaurs, said a scientist. PTI

KANCHAN AGARWAL kanchan.a@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Between January 1 and June 22, 2013, a total of 6,375 cases of drunken driving have been registered. In the campaign against drunk driving performed last weekend, some 356 cases were booked of which 264 were two-wheeler riders, 113 were three-wheeler riders and the rest were four-wheeler drivers. After attending the compulsory counselling sessions at TTI,

Begumpet and Goshamahal on Monday, the respondents were produced before the Third and Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Court and were charged a fine of `2,000 to `2,100. One is convicted on the magistrate’s discretion if the BAC (blood alcohol content) is above 100. If it is below 100, you are charged a fine. Above 100 calls for imprisonment.

There have been no second-time drunk driving offenders, deputy commissioner of police (traffic)-II Syamsundar informs us. However, there is the matter of an offender managing to escape checking points by employing alternative routes and other gimmicks. On this he says, “That does happen but not everybody knows of all the checking points. We catch 200-250 offenders per day. Also, to correct the issue, we are devising a plot wherein checking can take place at random points, too. Plus a team is being dedicated to perform random checks on weekdays, too.” In case a second-time offender is caught, as of now nothing more than extra days of imprisonment can be recommended by traffic police. A drunken driving offender can be imprisoned for a maximum period of six months. However, the traffic commission is in the process of building a database of drunk drivers which will also be synchronised with the crime bureau and provided to various official correspondents. If an offender is caught three times, not only will his driving licence be cancelled, the offence will also cost him loss of valuable documents and identity proof such as a passport.

Two rob man and disrobe him as well MOHD SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The Bowenpally police had an unusual visitor on Saturday night — a senior citizen who was clad only in his underwear and nothing else! Policemen on duty looked at him in disbelief, but the man said he was a victim of robbery. He not only lost all valuables and money but the heartless thugs had taken away his clothes too! What P Laxmaiah, 62, said was sad but amusing too. He supplies fish to many restaurants and homes near Bowenpally market. As usual, he was returning after the sale of fish. ach and wanted to relieve himself. The unwary man parked his bicycle on the roadside and went into the bush. Hardly had he been there for five to 10 minutes when two men appeared and accosted him. Abusing him for using the roadside for relieving himself, they closed in. It was just a ruse, Laxmaiah told police. Their intention was to rob him. They forcibly took off his clothes along with `5,000, a watch, a mobile phone, one gold ring and two silver rings. Laxmaiah sat in the bushes till darkness descended and made his way to the police station. The man has no idea of who his tormentors are as he has never seen them before. But he suspects the duo had been watching him collecting money and returning alone on cycle.

Leave their last fort alone

Endless parade of automobiles to the zoo kicks up the stress levels in the captive creatures, authorities warn. Zoo has enough noiseless vehicles for visitors. Use them. PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com

“B

utterflies are pretty things, prettier than you or I,” remember the nursery rhyme? Well, our kids in the City will have to be satisfied with the pictures of butterflies, not the real ones, as they are lost forever to Hyderabadis. So are the house sparrows, the cute little chirpy things that perk up your mood. Crows, nature’s scavengers, are about to say goodbye to the City because they eat arsenic-laced food and die. Their superiors — eagles and vultures — have already departed. In fact, we’ve poisoned our food so much so that we’re all now moving bodies of poison. Now, the last fort of animals is under invasion. The recent hike in parking fee the zoo authorities voted for (`1,000 per four-wheeler) points to the nuisance of vehicles. The stress level of creatures inside the zoo has gone up due to incessant pressure of pollution, both noise and air, zoo officials warn.

Scientists warns of overpopulation

W

hat is happening to the zoo can’t be detached from the unbridled human population growth. World scientists have warned as far back as in 1995 the humanity is in peril for its avaricious quest for wealth on the one hand and the population growth on the other. “Pressures resulting from unrestrained population growth put demands on the natural world that can overwhelm any efforts to achieve a sustainable future. If we are to halt the destruction of our environment, we must accept limits to that growth.

What Hyderabadis can do n n

Why loss of a species hurts us

The value of biodiversity

L

here are over 10,000 zoos in the world today. Modern techniques have helped them in many ways but man’s overindulgence has caused incalculable harm to the denizens of the jungle. The UN Convention on Biological Diversity 1992 has a Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. This includes a series of goals and targets known as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. Target 1 requires that ‘by 2020, at the latest, people are aware of the values of biodiversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably.’ Modern zoos claim to have an educational role in teaching the public about conservation and environmental issues.

oss of even a small species is one more nail in the human coffin, warn science studies on loss of species due to human overreach. The loss of biodiversity — from beneficial bacteria to charismatic mammals — threatens human health. That’s the conclusion of a study published this week in the journal Nature. The animals, plants and microbes most likely to disappear as biodiversity is lost are often those that buffer infectious disease transmission. Those that remain tend to be species that magnify the transmission of infectious diseases like West Nile virus, Lyme disease, and hantavirus.

The never-ending whirring of motor vehicles, loud laughter and talk, tonnes of petro-fumes emitted every moment, crowds surging inside are no amusing matters to the poor captive creatures inside the zoo. This is the situation today when people from the City motor down to the Nehru Zoological Park, which is

T

the second most visited spot in Hyderabad. Every weekend, some 400-500 four-wheelers rush inside. Though they are kept at the mark and not to the interior, the cacophony is too much for the poor things inside. “Vehicles are allowed from the ORR side, so there is some relief for the creatures inside,”

n n

Put a moratorium on tree cutting Give thrust to tree plantation wherever there is a little space Keep water vessels on the terrace of your home Grow creepers and mango trees in your kitchen garden

points out A Sankaran, chief curator of the zoo. “But the noise and traffic jam at the zoo entrance penetrates,” he adds. “It is sad the City once rich in flora and fauna is giving way to concrete jungle,” Sankaran said. “You know, some 1,000 to 1,500 snake nests are destroyed in the City every year when heavy machinery is used to construct buildings. Each snake lost is an irreparable loss. Snakes are predators of pests and protect soil fertility. Same is true of many other animals and birds that had enriched human lives once,” says the chief curator. Sankaran says Hyderabad is mindlessly destroying many organisms in its quest for realty development that brings in money but not quality life. The loss of nature will be felt eventually, and it will be our children who are going to face the music.

KOLKATA CURRICULUM

FIERY TRAGEDY

Gender sensitivity chosen over classics Teachers and students are including ‘innovative ideas’ to bring about equality.

SAHANA GHOSH feedback@postnoon.com KOLKATA: Red Riding Hood no longer needs the woodcutter to come to her rescue. Armed with training in self-defence, she is now well-equipped to protect herself. This and many more such interventions by a clutch of schools in the city are the latest weapons to bring about gender sensitisation at the grassroots.

AROUND THE

NATION

The practice follows the brutal Delhi gang-rape incident last December "that revealed flaws in our society, especially pertaining to the mindset of the people". Both boys and girls schools have shown the way ahead through workshops, campaigns

and regular discussions and talks. Most importantly, educators are adopting modified poems and stories that debunk stereotypes that relegate women to the kitchen and see them as only homemakers. A case in point is Little Red Riding Hood, where a wolf disguises itself as her grandmother and attacks the child. In the original a woodcutter saves the girl but she is now well-prepared to deal with such situations.

"Such steps are necessary because our stories and poems show women as homemakers and getting married. Women have so many roles to play other than that. Modifying contents will go a long way because such poems are taught to us from our childhood. So we must educate our children about gender equality from the very beginning to strengthen their foundations," sociologist Saswati Ghosh told IANS.

Babus dead against swiping The fear of getting caught coming late might be the reason why Secretariat employees are opposed to bio-metric attendance. Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The government employees who form part of governance that frame rules for common man are hell-bent on breaking them. The administration’s attempt to introduce bio-metric attendance system in the State secretariat, a part of its effort to streamline governance is opposed tooth and nail by the employees unions. The novel initiative launched last week as a pilot project for the finance department saw stiff resistance for obvious reasons. Scores of employees of the finance department yesterday staged a protest before the chambers of their department head, V Bhaskar, principal secretary of the finance department. They demanded that the State government should implement the biometric system for all Secretariat employees instead of the finance department only. The repeated explanations of the Principal Secretary that the system was introduced on a pilot basis following the direction of Chief Secretary PK Mohanty did not satisfy the agitated

Though, the employees protested by citing partiality, the actual reason for the protest of the employees is the fear of being caught red-handed when swiping replaces signing the muster. “The novel attendance system has worried many

secretariat employees especially late comers. Most of the employees generally come very late to work. In the manual system they can’t be caught as attendance does not show the check-in time. But it is not the same when it comes to the bio-metric attendance system,” a senior secretary from the finance department told Postnoon on Monday. Many officials when contacted for comments said the same thing. Interestingly, all IAS officers have been kept out of this system.

he secretariat employees’ union leaders have welcomed the idea of introducing the bio-metric system. However, they are wary of sustaining the system in the long run. “The idea is good. But a lot of issues need to be addressed before implementation. The most important is the problem of security check by police at the main entrance. Even if the employees come on time (10.30 am), they would lose out to the mandatory security checks at the gate,” AP Secretariat Women Employees Welfare Association president B. Nirmala said. The former president of AP Secretariat Employees Union M Hanmantha Reddy said that the machines should be installed at the main entrance instead of the departments. Most employees report late to work owing to security check and parking,” he said. “All these are lame excuses. The real reason is laziness which will be spiked,” said a security inspector at the secretariat.

PRESCOTT: The bodies of 19 young firefighters killed in America's deadliest wildfire in 80 years were removed Monday, as experts probed how they perished so suddenly. The names of the dead men, mostly in their 20s, were released a day after the Yarnell Hill fire tragedy, in which all but one of a 20-strong elite team were killed, many in cocoon-like last-ditch protection shelters. The blaze, which quadrupled in size overnight, was the most lethal since the September 11, 2011 which cost the lives of 340 firefighters at the Twin Towers in New York. "The Yarnell fire exploded into a firestorm that AROUND THE

overran the local Granite Mountain hotshots," Arizona governor Jan Brewer said. This elite firefighting unit, typically goes in first to set up initial fire containment lines. Officials stressed that the nature of the hotshots' work meant they needed to be in the peak of physical fitness. They said the deaths were under investigation but that the men appeared to have deployed fire shelters —last-ditch protection equipment — just before they were engulfed in flames. “It's a very elite group of people who are highly trained, highly motivated, very fit... We don't know what happened," Wade Ward, Prescott Fire Department spokesman said.

Their shared passion for music. Passion aside, with Sharik Hasan on the piano, Adam Larson on saxophone, Philippe Lemm on drums and Raviv Markovitz manning the double bass, this quartet is a bundle of young talent. “When you’re on tour, the one thing you don’t want to worry about is the music,” says Adam. “With good musicians, you know they’ll put in the work.” And with this quartet, not knowing the material is not an option. Ask them about their practice schedules and all of them break out into long explanations. “You can see it is a sensitive topic for all of us. But getting back to the work part of it, they have all had their share of terrible gigs. Adam’s and Philippe’s both involved, oddly enough, being asked to play in a closed room so that the guests at the event couldn’t see them. “Whenever they walked into the room, people would be surprised that a live band was playing. What’s the use? They could just have played a music CD instead,” said Philippe. For his part, Sharik had to put up with a prickly Parisienne restaurant owner. “If a patron came over and talked about what I

was playing, she would get really mad and tell me I wasn’t to talk to the guests,” he says. The quartet is touring India with the support of the True School of Music, a new academy set up in Mumbai. Philippe, a recent graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, will also be teaching there from September. Teaching is an important part of Adam’s life as well. “I started teaching when I was around 16. I believe it does help my music. It helps me articulate my ideas better. Because if I can’t explain it so that someone can go home and practice, I need to re-examine my understanding of the matter,” he says. Does it ever bother them that jazz isn’t the most popular genre? Sometimes, they say. But that isn’t the point. Philippe says, “With us, the audience may be small but the music is for insiders, who really appreciate it. I like that. People who come to our performances are either there for the music or they are open minded enough to try it. I think this keeps us true to our music, which is great.”

Snowden accused Barack Obama of "pressuring the leaders" of countries from which he has sought protection. WASHINGTON: Fugitive US intelligence analyst Edward Snowden has submitted asylum requests to 19 more nations including Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, India, China, Russia, Germany and France, WikiLeaks said Monday. In addition to earlier requests to Ecuador and Iceland, Wikileaks said its legal advisor in the Snowden matter, Sarah Harrison, had personally submitted other requests on behalf of Snowden, the NSA whistleblower. "The requests were delivered to an official at the Russian consulate at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow late in the evening," a WikiLeaks statement posted online said. "The documents outline the risks of persecution Mr Snowden faces in the United States and have started to be delivered by the Russian consulate to the relevant embassies in Moscow." The petitions on Snowden's behalf were made to Austria; Bolivia; Brazil, China, Cuba, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Venezuela, the group added. Snowden on Monday accused US President Barack Obama of "pressuring the leaders" of countries from which he has sought protection. In his first public announcement since fleeing Hong Kong eight days ago, Snowden accused Obama of having ordered Vice President Joe Biden to put pressure on leaders of countries where he was seeking asylum. It also emerged that Snowden had written to Ecuador's President Rafael Correa thanking him for his support in his bid to avoid extradition.

VICTIM OF FLOOD FURY

CHINA

Wonder kid looks for ma, pa This two-year-old ‘wonder kid’ escaped the floods at Kedarnath, but there is no news about her missing parents. KAVITA BAJELI-DATT Indo Asian News Service DEHRADUN: Wearing a white frock with violet flowers and her two tiny legs in plaster, a twoand-a-half-year-old girl, who has attracted media attention after she got separated in the deluge from her parents in Kedarnath and was rescued, is not happy just clutching her big bright doll. She demands attention and wants those taking care of her to take her out from the drab, white-walled hospital room to the bright sunshine outside in her pink pushcart. But that too soon bores her and she cries and asks for “mama” and “papa". There is no answer from those around her — mostly NGOs, women workers of Bal Vikas and Aganwadi — and the many who come to see “the wonder kid” from far and wide. No one knows how to fulfil the one wish the girl is asking for.

was first admitted to a hospital Rishikesh with broken legs and was then shifted to the Dehradun-based Doon Hospital on June 24 Since then, she has become the centre of attention. Newspapers and electronic media highlighted her plight, posters were put up as well as

advertisements in the hope that someone, somewhere would recognise her and identify her. But no one has come forward to claim her so far. Apart from curious onlookers, there have been many whose hearts melted when they saw the little girl crying for “mama” and “papa” and there were many eyes that shed tears for the girl, who perhaps would never get to see her biological parents. As the girl cannot speak anything apart from “mama” and “papa” no one knows her real name. Finally, she has been given the name of “Pari” or fairy. The hospital register shows her parents as “unknown”. Pari has adjusted to her new environment, said nurse Geeta Rawat. “The initial days were very difficult - for her and also for us. She continuously cried for her parents. We didn’t know how to make her stop. Both her legs are on plaster and it will take at least a few months to heal. She has now adjusted to this hospital, her room and the people around her. She has started eating now. But, yes, she still pines for her parents," Rawat told IANS. As Pari once again refuses to enter her room, that now has many bright-looking toys from teddy bears to trains, the aganwadi workers and NGO activists take her out for a ride in her little pink buggy that was also donated.

Porn movie screened at rail station BEIJING: A maintenance worker surprised passers-by near a Chinese railway station when he starting watching a banned porn film, not realising his computer was connected to a giant screen, state media said Tuesday. The worker, identified only by his surname Yuan, was supposed to repair the screen, on a building near the main railway station in Jilin in northeast China, the Global Times reported. But when he began playing The Forbidden Legend: Sex and Chopsticks, hundreds of local residents stopped to watch as well, the official Xinhua news agency reported. AROUND THE

The company which owns the screen called him after about 10 minutes, and he immediately disconnected the computer before throwing the disc out of a window, the Global Times said. The film is based on a classic Chinese erotic novel, The Plum in the Golden Vase, set in the Northern Song dynasty in the early 12th century and centred on Ximen Qing, a corrupt social climber and womaniser who has six wives and concubines among his 19 sexual partners. The story follows the women’s domestic sexual struggles as they seek prestige and influence.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

150 years after Gettysburg, racism exists There are 10 army bases in the US named after Confederate generals: one of them was a KKK leader. ANNE RENAUT Agence France-Presse GETTYSBURG: General John Gordon led troops for the South at Gettysburg 150 years ago in the US Civil War before becoming a leader of the Ku Klux Klan, the infamous white supremacist organization. Yet, in a sign of a United States still tormented by racial issues, today a military base in Georgia carries his name, that of a man who declared slavery “the hand-maid of civil liberty." Fort Gordon is one of 10 US military bases named after Confederate army generals — many of whom defended the

practice of slavery, explained writer Jamie Malanowski. “Now African-Americans make up about a fifth of the military. The idea that today we ask any of these soldiers to serve at a place named for a defender of a racist slavocracy is deplorable," protested Malanowski, who wrote a book about the six months that preceded the war. It was controversy over whether slavery should be allowed in the newly annexed western territories that provoked the Civil War in 1861. Southern states supported extending slavery in the west. Outvoted, eleven of them chose to secede from the union.

AROUND THE

WORLD

“The War Between the States," as it was later known in the South, was brutal and brutally divisive, with echoes that continue to today. At a memorial for the Battle of Gettysburg, fought over three bloody days in July 1863, Lincoln spoke of the shared heritage of the two sides: the Declaration of Independence, that created a nation “dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." July 1 is the 150th anniver-

sary of the start of the battle, a turning point in the war. Historian Brian Jordan, of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, said the fact that there are based named after southern generals “is less an issue than the civil rights movement” which will mark this year the 50th anniversary of the famous “I have a dream” speech by the late Reverend Martin Luther King. One sign race remains a hot button topic came last week, when “southern cooking” television star Paula Deen was booting from the Food Network after 10 years because of a racist remark she made years ago.

The finer aspects of life

When you think of art, you think Kalakriti art gallery. Now in its 11th year, Kalakriti has curated numerous artists of repute, and seen them through their journey from day one. It was the initiative of businessman Prshant Lahoti. Postnoon finds out how his journey with Kalakriti has been. start selling on day 1. You need to select artists and artists should have faith in you.

KANCHAN AGARWAL kanchan.a@postnoon.com Tell us how Kalakriti art gallery came about. I always loved art and antiques. In 2002, there came an opportunity where I could open a gallery. I thought to enter into art, and reach its depth, and if I want to make a difference, the best option would be to open an art gallery. That’s how Kalakriti came about.

Patience and dedication make the big picture. What are the tiny details that are involved in this work? It is a very simple thing. Whatever you say, art is elitist. When you are selling something elitist, the whole concept, the space, every detail in the gallery, and during the show, should be perfect. You can’t have a gallery anywhere you find space. I used to train my staff how to exactly put a painting, not slanting even by 1 mm. We still check with spirit level if it is straight. check distance between two paintings. We decide which paintings should go where. Coming to the details involved — The title, a small write up about the show and artist’s comfort with you. You need give all the support to the artist. He does not want the headache of setting it up. The gallery should provide all that. These finer details count.

How were the first few months? They were very tough. I was very new to the business of art. I didn’t know many artists personally. The gallery was new so no one knew about it. But I knew a few people who were deeply involved in the workings of art and they guided me. What did it take to make Kalakriti what it is today? Focus on what we want. In spite of its commercial aspects, my work is driven more by passion. We were very clear that whatever shows we do, will not be due to their commercial aspect. If a show has to be here and is an important show, even if there are no chances of sale, we have done those. We never looked into what expenses we will have to bear. People knew if they came here, they would find quality.

Has your answer changed over the years? Yes. Earlier I used to get agitated when people would say things like ‘Why should I pay `50,000 for this painting. My child can draw better than this?’ now I think I have become more matured. I laugh it off. So why do we need art? There is something called finer refinements in life. There is something beyond just partying or shopping. You cannot lead a mundane life, art can change that. What’s next for and from Kalakriti? We are preparing ourselves for the future. Because of globalisation and the Internet, it won’t be long before Hyderabad catches up with Delhi and Mumbai in scene of art. We are getting ready for that time.

ituated 100 km north of Hyderabad, in the town of Gulshanbag, lies the State’s best-kept secret — the Medak Cathedral. Considered Asia’s single largest diocese, it is among the oldest and the grandest churches in the country. The cathedral was built in 1924 by a Wesleylan missionary from England named Charles Walker Posnett, who was posted to Hyderabad as a chaplain in the British Army and was later transferred to Medak. When the famine struck the people of Medak during the time, Posnett provided them food in return for their help in constructing the church, which took over 10 years for completion. It is regarded as the only church in the country that can hold 5,000 people at a time. With intricately patterned mosaic floors laid by Italian masons, mas-

sive pillars built with finely hewn grey stones supporting the vast expanse of ceiling and numerous arches, the cathedral is over 100ft high and 200ft wide and a stunning example of Gothic architecture. But the thing that really makes this church magnificent are three ethereally beautiful stained glass windows depicting different periods of Jesus Christ’s life — ascension, nativity and crucifixion — painted by the famous English artist Sir Frank Owen Salisbury over the course of 50 years. Today, the diocese of Medak is among the largest in the Christian world overseeing 1,500 congregations across five major districts in AP, i.e., Adilabad, Medak, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad. Also, in addition to the sprawling monument, the cathedral compound also houses an old-age home, residential hostel for boys and girls and several educational institutions.

It received a rapturous welcome from Morsi’s opponents, still camped out in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. Tamarod, the grassroots campaign behind Sunday’s massive protests against Morsi, also hailed the statement by the armed forces which it said had “sided with the people”. It “will mean early presidential elections”, Tamarod’s spokesman Mahmud Badr told reporters. Tens of thousands of jubilant protesters poured into the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and other large cities after the statement was broadcast. Raucous cheers rang out across main squares. In Tahrir, protesters voiced their support for army chief and Defence Minister General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, chanting: “Come down Sisi, Morsi is not my president.” The army, which led a tumultuous transition after the 2011 revolt that ousted Mubarak, had given all parties one week to reconcile their differences. “This week, there has been no sign of gestures or acts,” the army statement said.

LAND OF VINES

The Moroccan vintage

Morocco produces some good wine, mostly for the domestic use, but a part of it for export, particularly to France. OMAR BROUKSY Agence France-Presse BENSLIMANE: Vines stretch to the horizon under the hot summer sun in a vineyard near Casablanca, one of the oldest in Morocco, where despite the pressures from a conservative Muslim society, wine production — and consumption — is flourishing. “In Morocco we are undeniably in a land of vines,” says wine specialist Stephane Mariot. “Here there is a microclimate which favours the production of ‘warm wines’, even though we aren’t far from the ocean,” adds the manager of Oulad Thaleb, a 2,000-hectare vineyard in

Benslimane, 30 kilometres (18 miles) northeast of Casablanca, which he has run for five years. The social climate in the North African county is less propitious, however, with the election of the Islamist Party of Justice and Development in 2011, and the fact that Moroccan law prohibits the AROUND THE

sale of alcohol to Muslims, who make up 98 per cent of the population. In practice though alcohol is tolerated and well-stocked supermarkets do a brisk trade in the main cities where there is a grow-

ing appetite for decent wine. According to some estimates, 85 per cent of domestic production is drunk locally, while around half of total output is considered good quality. “Morocco today produces some good wine, mostly for the domestic market, but a part of it for export, particularly to France,”

says Mariot. Annual output currently stands at about 400,000 hectolitres, or more than 40 million bottles of wine, industry sources say, making the former French protectorate the second biggest producer in the Arab world. By comparison, neighbouring Algeria, whose vineyards were

cultivated for a much longer period during French colonial rule, produces 500,000 hectolitres on average, and Lebanon, with its ancient viticulture dating to the pre-Roman era, fills about six million bottles annually. Some of Morocco’s wine regions — such as Boulaouane, Benslimane, Berkane and Guerrouane — are gaining notoriety. Already it has one Appellation d’Origine Controlee — controlled designation of origin, or officially recognised region — named “Les Coteaux de l’Atlas”, and 14 areas with guaranteed designation of origin status, most of them concentrated around Meknes, as well as Casablanca and Essaouira.

Zynga co-founder Mark Pincus on Monday said he is handing over the helm of the struggling social games company to Microsoft entertainment division chief Don Mattrick. Word that videogame industry veteran Mattrick would be in command of San Francisco-based Zynga beginning next week sent shares climbing more than 10 percent to $3.21. “I’ve always said (to the Zynga board) that if I could find someone who could do a better job as our CEO, I’d do all I could to recruit and bring that person in," Pincus said in a letter to employees. “I’m confident that Don is that leader." America's expanding digital spy agency: NSA DAN DE LUCE Agence France-Presse

U

S intelligence leaker Edward Snowden have shed a rare public spotlight on the ultrasecret National Security Agency, which uses super computers and code-breaking mathematicians to oversee the world's most powerful electronic spying operation. Hollywood directors and novelists have made the CIA famous for its undercover agents in the field, but in the digital era, the hi-tech NSA may represent the most far-reaching arm of the country's 16 spy agencies, with its intelligence at the center of decision-making and military planning, experts say. The latest leak from Snowden alleges the NSA has been eavesdropping on US allies, including the European Union offices in Washington, which would fit in with the agency's ability to scoop up any conversation or email relevant to "foreign targets." Created after World War II to avoid another Pearl Harbor-style surprise attack, the NSA "has transformed itself into the largest, most covert, and potentially most intrusive intelligence agency ever created," wrote author James Bamford, whose books helped lift the lid on the agency's work. With code-breaking services in a disorganised jumble, President Harry Truman set up the NSA through a secret directive in 1952, allowing the agency virtually free reign to snoop on the Soviet Union and to track communications entering and leaving the United States.

ill it be a girl called Alexandra, or a boy called Wayne? No one outside Buckingham Palace knows but it has not stopped punters from around the world betting on Britain's royal baby. Bookmakers say they expect that wagers on the arrival of Prince William and Catherine's first child will outstrip those for the couple's wedding in 2011, previously the biggest market for so-called novelty bets.

Girls' names dominate the odds because punters seem convinced the royal baby will be a girl, after Kate reportedly nearly let it slip. There is a right royal choice of odds ranging from the future monarch's sex, weight and hair colour to even whether Kate will be "too posh to push" and have a caesarean. "It's a global market," Joe Crilly, a spokesman for British bookies William Hill, told AFP.

"British people love the royal family and so do people around the world." The big money is on the baby's name, which Crilly said people had been betting on with "full gusto." Traditional names head the list, led by Alexandra and followed by Charlotte, Elizabeth, Diana and Victoria when it comes to girls' names, and George, James and Louis for boys. Alexandra is Queen Elizabeth II's middle name, Charlotte is the middle name of Kate's sister Pippa and the name of King George III's wife, while Victoria would honour Britain's longest-serving monarch. Unlikelier choices include Hashtag, the Twitter term on which Irish bookmaker Paddy Power took a bet at 500/1, and Wayne and Waynetta, after the slobby characters in a British television comedy, at 250/1 and 500/1 respectively. Punters can also get odds of 5,000/1 on Psy, after the South Korean pop star, or North, the name of rapper Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's new baby. "We are seeing a tug of war with a quite modern couple like William and Kate on one hand but they have a royal family to appease, 1,000 years of tradition and they don't want to upset the queen," Rory Scott, a spokesman for Paddy Power, told AFP.

Girls' names dominate the odds because punters seem convinced the royal baby will be a girl, after Kate reportedly nearly let it slip during a public appearance earlier this year. Odds are normally equal for both genders but in this case the odds are nearly twice as long on a male for most bookies. The most volatile topic is the date of the birth, with several betting companies slashing the odds on the first week of July instead of the expected date of around July 13. That was partly because of reports that Kate may follow Princess Diana, who gave the press the slip by announcing a later than actual due date when

she was pregnant with William in 1981, said Scott. But bookies said they had not taken many bets on that topic. "Nobody knows when it was conceived, people are just speculating," said Crilly. Punters are however weighing into other apparently unpredictable matters. The favourite for hair colour is brown followed by blonde or black, with ginger hair like the new arrival's uncle Prince Harry generally the least favoured. Meanwhile William and Kate are both equally placed to be the one who holds the baby outside the hospital for the traditional photograph.

t’s ironical that the Chinese government has come out with a law that children must visit their parents more often and look after them. China, unlike India, has a society that is aging quickly. By 2050, one in three people there will be over 60. Yet, even in India, stories of the elderly being ill-treated by children over property matters and helpless parents languishing in old age homes in pathetic conditions are common. The new Chinese law also makes it mandatory for companies to grant at least 20 days of annual leave to employees who do not live in the same town as their parents. The young vibrant online community in the world’s largest country has not taken the new diktat too well. Many elders live even without a pension after pledging their life savings for the welfare of their children. We need to refocus on traditional values and filial piety. If the young are not willing to take care of a group, which they would also fit in to soon, social security measures by the government are inevitable.

workplace THE FINANCE STORY

At times, it’s better to be paid less than not being paid at all. Youngsters today have no qualms in taking a pay cut, if it means better work environments, facilities, satisfaction and a belief that the company can take you places. We talk to some such people.

ivek Kumar has seven years of work experience in the software industry. Today, he is working a nine-eight shift, sometimes puts in extra hours, and is first in line to the CEO’s chair. It is a smaller MNC compared with the one he was working at earlier where he was the marketing and sales head. There he was earning `14lakh per annum, here it is `10 lakh. So, in order to make up somewhat for that dip in finances he is freelancing as a market guru online. Was it a wise decision taking the pay cut? “It was one of the most difficult decisions I took in my life,” Vivek says. “Now I don’t regret it at all. I took the cut because I liked what my company was offering. Space to be myself, widen my scope and I got additional amenities like housing, insurance for family and parents and a paid holiday a year. So what if the package is not hefty, I think this company will take me places and it just suited my requirements.” Krutika Manchanda, too, has an interesting tale to tell. She started working as an engineer, then decided to become a journalist. She completed a journalism course and got a job with a national daily. Since it was a new field, her pay was less compared with what she got as an engineer. Two years into the job, boredom crept in and she began to look for new avenues. Her next stint was as a teacher with an NGO, despite a drastic drop in the pay. Vivek and Krutika are examples of a new breed of professionals who are looking for more than money from a job. In today’s world, maintaining salary packages is difficult, but many should find a pay cut a bitter pill to swallow.

Krutika Manchanda started working as an engineer. She completed a journalism course and got a job with a national daily later. But, her pay was less in comparison. Her next stint was as a teacher with an NGO, despite a drastic drop in the pay.

Some recruiters agree. They say that going by the economic situation in the country and the availability of jobs, it’s going to be more agreeable for people to take a pay cut as it does not carry the negative stigma that it does in times of boom. Sometimes taking a pay cut is the right career move. For some, it’s all about job satisfaction. Sanjeev Dikshit, a senior communications executive with a Singapore-based company tells us why he left his plum job as a senior data analyst with a leading software company in India, opted to go abroad and that too with a pay cut. He says, “By trading that six figure sum and all that data sheets for interviews and meeting new people and being in Singapore I found happiness. The pay cut was a small price to pay. I think I have made a smart decision. If you find the right kind of place and work, the money does not matter much. Plus, two years down the line when I look for better opportunities back in India, I am sure I will be compensated well.” In a society that has been taught to pursue ever-increasing pay checks, we are learning that sometimes taking a pay cut can actually be the more prudent career move.

hen another family breaks, my family is fed. Am I evil or just a common man doing his job? I am a divorce lawyer. In fact, I am a Family Court lawyer because I didn't want to deal with hardcore criminal cases. Like any of you software engineers, entrepreneurs and journalists, I have also had ambitions to do well in my career. As an amateur, I have done what I thought I had to do — ensure my clients go back with a divorce. Did I traverse them to a happy life or not, I didn’t give it much thought. Did they have children? Maybe. But, that didn’t stop me. Did I make enough money? I sure did. All those morals and values imbibed in childhood had to play their roles someday. And they did. They decided to make me believe I was the cause of numerous unhappy couples and broken families. They told me innocent children were now suffering and visiting shrinks because of me. There has been guilt. There has been success, too. I am now a known divorce lawyer. You want to get rid of your spouse quickly and hassle free? I am the guy. Of course, as is the nature of universe, what went around, had to come around. I had to witness my little niece be the victim of two adults’ self-centered, petty and ugly married life. I saw how they bickered and hated each other and how my niece thought she was the cause of it all. I could not save a family that close to me, but there has since been a change in me. Now I don’t go to work thinking ‘I must file that divorce’. Now I hear from myself ‘let me see how I can save that couple’. My conviction, anyway, can do only so much. When a man and a woman have had enough of each other, when there is no love left, nothing can keep them together. Unfortunately or fortunately (as divorce opens new avenues for each of them), I have to be the mediator of this change. The burden of breaking a family gets to me, it’s no making up for the loss but for self validation that I help couples who want to register their marriage free of cost. I am guilty but I can’t help it. It is my job.

LIVER PROTEIN ESSENTIAL FOR PREGNANCY

Scientists have found that a protein shown to function in the liver has a key role in human menstrual cycle and may also play a crucial role in pregnancy. Mice that were engineered not to produce the liver receptor homolog-1 (Lrh-1) molecule were unable to create the uterine conditions necessary for pregnancy.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR LIVER: PART II

liver disease 1 Alcoholic Alcoholic liver disease occurs after years of heavy drinking. Over time, scarring can occur. Cirrhosis, a leading cause of death, is a slowly progressing disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue, eventually preventing the liver from functioning properly. It is the end-stage of alcoholic liver disease. Symptoms n Pain and swelling in the abdomen n Decreased appetite and weight loss n Yellow colour in the skin, mucus membranes, or eyes ( jaundice) n Itching n Numbness in legs and feet Treatment The immediate remedy is to stop drinking alcohol altogether. If cirrhosis hasn't occurred as yet, the liver will be able to regenerate. Vitamins, especially B-complex and folic acid, can help reverse malnutrition. If there is a lot of liver damage, there may be need for a liver transplant. The side effects of cirrhosis will also have to be managed.

Diseases of the

LIVER

2 Primary liver cancer

Primary liver cancer is a rare but serious form of cancer that starts in the liver. Although the exact cause of liver cancer is unknown, it is thought to be related to damage to the liver, such as cirrhosis. It is also believed that obesity may increase the risk of liver cancer due to its links with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Symptoms n Unexplained weight loss n Nausea n Vomiting n Tiredness n Jaundice n Itchy skin n Feeling tired and weak

Treatment Treatments used to treat primary liver cancer include surgery, chemoembolisation, tumour ablation, chemotherapy and biological therapy. Radiotherapy may occasionally be used. In people with earlystage liver cancer, surgery is often done with the aim of curing the cancer. If it is at a more advanced stage, the treatment may only be able to control it, and improve quality of life.

19

Fatty liver disease If fat makes up more than five to 10 per cent of the liver, the patient may be suffering from alcoholic or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Alcoholism, hepatitis C, obesity, and an overload of iron can cause it. Some drugs and hereditary factors can also cause fatty liver. Symptoms n Fatigue n Weight loss or loss of appetite n Weakness n Nausea n Confusion, impaired judgment, or trouble concentrating n An enlarged liver n Patchy, dark skin discolouration, usually on the neck or underarm area Treatment There is no specific treatment at this time for fatty liver disease. However, getting treatment for any underlying disease, such as diabetes, is essential. If you have alcoholic liver disease and you are a heavy drinker, quitting drinking is the most important thing you can do. Losing weight gradually will also help.

Hepatitis

The liver is under a lot of strain to filter toxins from the body. Obesity, overconsumption of alcohol and a poor diet are the main causes of liver failure. 3 Liver cysts

Liver cysts are abnormal, fluid-filled structures. They are mostly congenital, but in some cases, they can be caused by infections. Liver cysts do not impair the liver’s ability to function. They are usually benign and the only patients who require treatment for cysts are those who exhibit symptoms. In some cases, cystic tumours, which are growths that may become malignant over the course of many years, can form. Symptoms Liver cysts usually do not cause any symp-

toms. However, if a cyst becomes large, it can cause bloating and pain in the upper abdomen. Some cysts grow so large that you can feel them through the abdomen. Treatment Simply removing the fluid from the cyst with a needle is not effective because the cyst fills up again within several days. The best treatment is to remove a large portion of the cyst wall. This surgical procedure can usually be done through the laparoscope, which requires only 2-3 small incisions and an overnight stay in the hospital. Cystic tumours must be completely removed surgically.

4

Hepatitis is a medical condition defined by the inflammation of the liver and characterised by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. The condition can be self-limiting (healing on its own) or can progress to fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis. Hepatitis viruses are the main cause of the disease, but other infections, overconsumption of alcohol and autoimmune diseases can also be responsible. Symptoms n Flu-like symptoms n Profound loss of appetite n Aversion to smoking among smokers n Dark urine n Jaundice n Peripheral oedema Treatment Bed rest, abstaining from alcohol, and taking medication will help relieve symptoms. Most people who have hepatitis A and E get well on their own after a few weeks. Hepatitis B and C need to be treated with medication. A liver transplant might be required if the scarring causes liver failure.

Technology THE BIG CONTEST

NUCLEAR

OIL

High in the availability stakes, nuclear is also said by some to be more cost effective than alternatives, as well as more reliable because nuclear plants can run at any time. Sustainability is also a bonus. Detractors tend to focus on its poor environment record.

Traditionally abundant, its once-vast resources are now declining. Some estimate that oil only has a remaining lifespan of 50 years. It is still, however, considered the most efficient fuel for cars with costs and investments lower than some renewable sources. Detractors say it is environmentally unfriendly.

TAKE NOTE

FOR

CONTENDERS ENERGY

DOMINATION

Our energy landscape is constantly changing, with newer resources competing with older, established ones. So which is the strongest resource of our times? We pitted different sources against one another to see how they compare in the race for dominance.

SOLAR

Highly abundant, solar is touted as clean and renewable, as well as sustainable — as long as we have the sun, we will have solar energy. It is also flexible and environmenfriendly. Problems do exist though — solar power is intermittent, expensive and does cause some greenhouse gas emissions.

WIND

Available worldwide and year-round, wind is considered to be clean, sustainable and pretty cheap. Supporters also cite its thermal efficiency. The major factor that makes wind less competitive is that the wind blows intermittently, making this source a little unreliable.

Microsoft is updating its iPhone, iPad, and Android OneNote applications to provide a more consistent looking experience throughout the different platforms. Notes are now designed to look identical across each application, with ink now rendering on iOS and Android devices. New formatting features on iPad and iPhone have been introduced to style text colors and tags, while the slight design tweaks mean search on iPad has been repositioned to the top of the app. On the Android side, Microsoft has added audio note support and home screen widgets. The new widgets support quick note taking, picture capture, and audio notes.

Twitter has begun trialling new features that give users a way to learn more about the tweets that they read. As noted by security expert Mikko Hypponen, Twitter has enabled a new "Embedded on these websites" notice below popular tweets on the web which lists articles that feature it. Users are invited to click through and discover the story behind the original post. Last week, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo outlined plans to help users cut through the noise of Twitter during events without losing the real-time feel of the conversation.

BIG CHANGE FOR WIKI

COAL

An abundant resource, it is believed that the world's coal reserves will last longer than oil. It also has some of the lowest investment required. Power stations, nonetheless, generate significant heat losses and have one of the worst environment records.

BIODIESEL

Produced from organic matter that is available wherever there are crops, biodiesel is fairly abundant, as well as clean and cheap. But practical issues do exist — large production of biofuels would require vast areas of land. Also some vehicles are not compatible with biofuels.

Anushka’s regal avatar in Rudrama Devi costs a bomb

Balupu revives Ravi Teja’s career

R

avi Teja’s career is back on track thanks to the success of his latest film Balupu. The film is doing quite well at the box office and sources say that it’s poised to be the biggest hit in Ravi Teja’s career so far. The film is likely to collect `13 crore in the first week, if all goes well and in the US, the film is already fetching profits for its distributor.

G

unasekhar’s upcoming magnum opus, Rudramadevi , starring Anushka, Rana, Suman, Krishnam Raju among many others, is raising quite a few eyebrows these days. The director revealed that so far 35 per cent of the film’s shooting has been wrapped up and after they watched the film’s rushes at IMAX 3D, the entire team is all the more confident about how the film is shaping up. Anushka, who’s playing the titular role in the movie, will reportedly be seen in jewellery worth a whopping `5 crore, which is more than the entire budget of several low budget films these days. Gunasekhar had roped in costume designer Neeta Lulla, who had earlier worked on Jodha Akbar, to create the right look for Anushka and buzz is that Neeta Lulla has used real diamonds and gold to design Anushka’s look. The director was so impressed with the output that he went on to claim that Anushka’s regal avatar in the film will be as good as Aishwarya Rai’s in Jodha Akbar. In the past, the makers of Arundhati and Nagavalli, had spent a lot to create the right look for Anushka in their respective films; however, none of them have gone to the extent of shelling out as much as Gunasekhar has done for Rudramadevi. For Nagavalli, the makers had tied up with a leading jewellery brand in the South to design various ornaments which Anushka had worn in the film. Going by all these reports, it’s quite possible that Rudramadevi will emerge as one of the biggest budgeted films ever made in Telugu. It’s also the first historical Indian film to be shot in 3D format and Gunasekhar has roped in several technicians from Germany to work on the film. Thota Tharani is the art director and buzz is that he’s building 11 different sets to recreate the grandeur of Kakatiya kingdom. Ilayaraja is scoring the music and Gunasekhar is planning to wrap up the film by December this year.

ajal Aggarwal is currently on a long break from work. She recently flew to London and from there she’ll head to US to spend some time with her family and relatives. On the other hand, Kajal has two bilingual films in hand including All in All Azhagu Raja and Jilla. Both films are under production.

KIRAN RAO

ike any other new filmmaker, she struggled to direct a film. Kiran Rao says her experience has taught her that filmmakers, who are swimming against the tide, should stay true to themselves to get recognition. The 39-year-old started her work as an assistant director in Oscar nominated 2001 movie Lagaan and continued the learning process in films like Monsoon Wedding, Saathiya and Swades, before directing her first film Dhobi Ghat in 2010. “The struggle is the same for any new filmmaker in the world and I don’t think India is any different. All first-time filmmakers who are doing something different and against the tide are going to struggle. There is no one way to fix that struggle. The best way to do it is to retain your identity and be true to yourself,” Rao said. “Let the project speak for itself because if you are excited about it, the excitement will communicate on its own. Then the merit of the project attracts people. Whatever you do, the project has to be of a certain quality and then it will get the support,” she added. Even though typical masala movies do not interest her, box-office successes make her happy. “When a film does well, it is good for the whole industry. I always feel good when films are doing well but get annoyed when a bad film does very good business. That becomes a little disappointing for a filmmaker. “You feel that the film did not have anything in it to do that great business, but you never know what the audience likes,” she said, and added that she is “never against commercial success”. “It is nice and encouraging even for a smallest filmmaker and indicative of a healthy environment for a film,” she explained. “There is a greater understanding now between the industry and the audience. They are not limited to movies being shown in theatres; they have access to television shows, music, literature and art from around the world... the audience can now go out and watch a film that they want to see,” Rao said. Describing the new trend as a “great thing”, she said it allows filmmakers to produce different material. “Now we have access to different kinds of films. And that is a fair thing. We have to allow diversity and provide different and interesting material which excites the audience,” she added. IANS

n summer 2011, Bridesmaids took the box office by storm, and talk immediately turned to a sequel. The studio wanted it and fans wanted it, but the one person who wanted nothing to do with it was writer/star Kristen Wiig. Fast-forward almost two years, and Wiig stands by that choice. “It wasn’t a hard decision,” she told Harper’s Bazaar for a profile in the July issue. “We knew during the first one, this was it. We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that’s not my goal in my creative life.” And Wiig’s director and co-stars respect that choice. With The Heat — which re-teamed Bridesmaids breakout star Melissa McCarthy and director Paul Feig — now in theaters, the Bridesmaids 2 questions returned in full force. KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Gerrans win ensures good start for team L’ILE-ROUSSE: Simon Gerrans’ sprint victory on the third stage of the Tour de France in Calvi on Monday completed what has been an eventful start to the race for his Orica-GreenEdge team, for good and bad reasons. The 33-year-old’s outfit were the villains of the opening day, although it was not as if any of the Orica riders were at fault when their bus became stuck under a gantry at the finish line in an incident that was later blamed for causing a mass crash among the peloton. Garikoitz Atxa, a Spanish for-

mer cyclist who was on his first day working as the team’s bus driver, was caught on camera with his head in his hands when the incident happened before the bus was moved out of the way just in the nick of time, and the team were later fined 2,000 Swiss Francs (US$2,116) by organisers. But, fast forward to Monday, and the Australian outfit were toasting their first stage win in the sport’s most famous race. “It’s a fantastic victory for the team. LONDON: Ferrari, Force India and Lotus, the three teams at the centre of the Pirelli British Grand Prix tyre storm, came out Monday in favour of changes to ensure no repeat of the dramatic blow-outs at Silverstone. Formula One was plunged into its latest crisis after dangerous tyre failures hit Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, while he led the race, Jean-Eric Vergne of Toro Rosso and Sergio Perez of McLaren. Ferrari, Lotus and Force India came out fighting after being attacked for being “short-sighted” for blocking Pirelli’s planned introduction of new tyre constructions. The claim was levelled by Red Bull’s technical chief Adrian Newey, who said

Pirelli had come up with a way to address the worrying issue of tyre safety this season, only for the three F1 outfits to vote against any change. He explained: “Pirelli came up with a solution for that, with a different construction, and that was being offered initially for Montreal. “But two or three teams vetoed that because they were worried it would suit some other teams more than it would suit them. “As a result of that shortsightedness, Formula One ended up putting up the worrying performance it did (at Silverstone) and concerns about driver safety.” Drivers had even threatened to go on strike if the issue was not resolved. WIMBLEDON

Novak to avenge Thomas DAVE JAMES Agence France-Presse LONDON: Novak Djokovic tackles Tomas Berdych for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals Wednesday still feeling the raw pain of his defeat to the Czech at the All England Club three years ago. World number one Djokovic was beaten in straight sets in the semifinals by Berdych in 2010, a defeat which raised serious doubts over whether or not the gifted but unpredictable Serb would

ever build on his Australian Open breakthrough of 2008. He lost that day but has since has gone on to win five more majors including the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open crowns in 2011. “Yes, I had quite a turbulent five, six months of 2010 but the semi-finals of Wimbledon came in the right time for me because I felt that was like a springboard for me," said Djokovic. “From that moment on everything started going uphill really." Not that Djokovic, who boasts a 13-2 winning record against Berdych will be tak-

ing anything for granted. “I hadn’t played great at that match against Tomas, but credit to him because he played finals that year, and he beat Roger and myself, played a good match against Rafa in the final. So he knows how to play on grass. That’s the only time we played on this surface. I’m expecting a difficult match." Djokovic reached his 17th successive Grand Slam quarter-final with a 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) win over German veteran Tommy Haas. But with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both suffering shock early defeats, he is taking nothing for granted

against Berdych. “It’s the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. He’s an established top 5, top 10 player in the world. “But I feel good about myself in this moment. I think I actually play better tennis on grass than I played two years ago when I won this tournament. For now I’m feeling good. I’m No. 1 of the world. I have no reason to be concerned about my game." Andy Murray insists he can cope with the burden of shouldering growing expectations that he will finally end the 77-year wait for a British man to win Wimbledon.

LONDON: Andy Murray insists he can cope with the burden of shouldering a nation’s growing expectations that he will finally end the 77-year wait for a British man to win Wimbledon. Murray was in commanding form as he swept into the quarters with a 6-4, 7-6, 6-1 win over Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny on Monday. He has yet to drop a set in his first four matches and looked more at ease than ever in the All England Club spotlight as he prepares for a last eight clash with Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday. With Laura Robson eliminated from the women’s draw, Murray is now the sole remaining focus of the British sporting public and he knows that means endless speculation about his chances of becoming the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. AFP

LONDON: Sabine Lisicki insists there is no chance complacency will ruin her dream of a first Wimbledon title as the German looks to follow her stunning win over Serena Williams with more success in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Lisicki booked her fourth appearance in the last eight with the performance of a lifetime as the 23rd seed ended Williams’s reign as Wimbledon champion with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory on Monday. The 23-year-old’s epic triumph was the latest in a series of unlikely wins for the underdogs at the All England Club this year. Williams followed Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova out of the tournament, leaving it

wide open for a relatively unheralded player like Lisicki to take the crown. And Lisicki, who reached the semi-finals in 2011 but has never

been past the fourth round at any other Grand Slam, is determined not to rest on her laurels against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi as she eyes a place in the last four.

“It feels very good. Obviously I went into the match feeling that I could win," she said. “I played very good in the first three matches and I felt ready for this match. “I found my rhythm again. I hope I can keep it up. I’m already focused for tomorrow." Kanepi shattered Britain’s dreams of a first woman in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for 29 years, beating unseeded Laura Robson 7-6 (8/6), 7-5. Former champion Petra Kvitova booked her fourth consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final appearance with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 win over Carla Suarez Navarro. Kvitova overpowered the Spanish 19th seed with 23 winners and will face Belgian 20th seed Kirsten Flipkens.

Janowicz proud to strike blow for Poland DAVE JAMES Agence France-Presse LONDON: He’s the beanpole Pole who could have been seduced by the dazzling power of Qatar’s petro-dollars. But Jerzy Janowicz (right) is a proud Polish player who 12 months ago was ranked 136 in the world and had to qualify for Wimbledon. A year on, he is in the quarter-finals for the first time with

his country assured of a spot in the semis after the shock-ravaged tournament pitted him against Davis Cup team-mate Lukasz Kubot, the world 130, in the last eight. The 22-year-old hit headlines in 2012 when he climbed 195 places in the rankings to finish at 26 in the world after finishing runner-up at the Paris Masters having come through qualifying. In the French capital, he

defeated top 10 players Andy Murray and Janko Tipsarevic. But had things turned out differently, he could have been representing Qatar at Wimbledon after he was offered citizenship by the tiny Gulf state in his junior days. “This was in 2006 when I won my first junior title in Saudi Arabia. One guy came to me and talked about the situation. I actually said straight away, no," he said.

TRI-NATION SERIES

India, Sri Lanka eye first points India and Sri La nka go in search of their first points of the Tri-Nation Series when they meet at Sabina Park as the preliminary phase reaches the halfway point. KINGSTON: India and Sri Lanka go in search of their first points of the Tri-Nation Series when they meet on Tuesday at Sabina Park as the preliminary phase of the competition reaches the halfway point. With the West Indies completing contrasting victories over the other two teams and already on their way to Trinidad and Tobago, where the last three group matches and the final will be played from Friday, this duel of sub-continental neighbours almost has the feel of an eliminator. While defeat for either side will not rule them out completely from making the final on July 11 at Queen’s Park Oval, it will

leave them having to win their two remaining matches in Port of Spain, a venue where the weather is notoriously fickle at this time of the year. India should be the more confident of the combatants in the Jamaican capital, although they are likely to be without the services of inspirational leader Mahendra Singh Dhoni, unless he makes a remarkable recovery from what was reportedly diagnosed initially as a right hamstring strain sustained while batting against the West Indies on Sunday. His calm control of proceedings on the field were missed as much as his wicketkeeping, yet stand-in captain Virat Kohli

ASHES WARM-UP Swann given all clear after X-ray LONDON: Graeme Swann has avoided a fracture to his bowling arm and is set to return to fielding duty later in England’s Ashes warm-up match against Essex, an ECB spokesman said Monday. Swann was hit on his right forearm by Essex paceman Tymal Mills while batting on Monday in England’s first innings 413 for nine declared. England’s leading spinner continued his innings but did not take the field when Essex batted and was instead sent to hospital for an X-ray. However, the ECB subsequently said Swann had not suffered a major injury. “(The) X-ray showed no fracture,” the spokesman explained. “He is continuing to receive treatment for bruising and will return to the field later in the game.” News that Swann has not suffered a severe setback will come as a huge relief to England chiefs after the 34-year-old missed the tour of New Zealand earlier this year to have surgery on his right elbow. Not only has Swann established himself as England’s first choice spinner but, as an off-break bowler, is expected to play a key role in the defence of the Ashes against an Australia side set to feature several left-handers. Dhoni ruled out of series KINGSTON: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been ruled out of the remainder of the Tri-Nation Series with a right hamstring strain sustained while batting against the West Indies in his team’s first match of the tournament on Sunday at Sabina Park. His place in the 15-man squad will be taken by the uncapped 27-year-old batsman Ambati Rayudu. Vice-captain Virat Kohli, who led the team on the field in Dhoni’s absence against the West Indies, takes over as the

captain for the remainder of the tri-nation series. India are set to face Sri Lanka on Tuesday (today) in Kingston with both teams looking for their first points after each lost to the hosts in their respective opening fixtures. Following that encounter, the tournament shifts to the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, for the remaining three preliminary matches at the final, starting with India against the West Indies on Friday.

ensured that the undisputed kings of One-Day International cricket made the home side battle all the way towards a modest target of 230, winning by just one wicket. “We aren’t too disappointed,” Kohli stated after that match. “Just one wicket made the difference in the end so it could have gone either way. We fought really hard.” While the weather at the start of the hurricane season in the Caribbean has so far been kind to the competition in Jamaica, both captains will be keen to win the toss. That way they can give their bowlers first use of a pitch that has made run-scoring difficult in the first half of the day. AFP

England on top against Essex’ LONDON: England tailenders were in the runs and one of their opening batsmen in the wickets after a day which threatened to be overshadowed by an injury scare involving Graeme Swann left them well-placed in their Ashes warm-up match against Essex. Essex, at stumps on Monday’s second day of four at Chelmsford, were 231 for nine in reply to England’s first innings 413 for nine declared, a deficit of 182 runs. Swann was hit on his right forearm by Essex paceman Tymal Mills in the course of making 94 on Monday morning. week’s first Ashes Test alongside England captain Alastair Cook, took a careerbest four for 57 with his offspinners. England had been in trouble at 212 for seven, with all of their top order getting to double figures without

pressing on, but their innings was boosted by a stand of 187 between Tim Bresnan (105 not out) and Swann in an innings where novice Essex leg-spinner Tom Craddock took a careerbest five for 69. Bresnan, primarily a

seamer, started the day on 55 not out but pressed on to his first hundred since 2007 when he made 126 not out for the second-string England Lions against India at Chelmsford. Swann, within sight of a hundred, was caught at midon by Ravi Bopara off Craddock and next ball the bowler had his fifth wicket when Steven Finn was lbw after missing a leg-break. Bresnan reached his century, off 182 balls and including 12 fours, when he struck occasional spinner Tom Westley for six over wide long-on. England declared and then saw fast bowler Finn strike early when he had Westley caught behind before New Zealand’s Hamish Rutherford was caught by Kevin Pietersen, who’d dropped him earlier, at mid-off off the bowling of Bresnan. RIO DE JANEIRO: Former world champion Ronaldo on Monday lauded Brazil’s “fantastic” Confederations Cup triumph over Spain - but also praised protesters who have taken to the streets in recent weeks, saying they are forcing social change. “Congratulations for a fantastic victory and an unbelievable achievement,” said Ronaldo, whose goals saw off Germany in Brazil’s 2002 World Cup win. “The contact between the tea and the Brazilian fans was breathtaking and very touching -

to an even greater degree than when I played,” said the former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan star and three-time former world player of the year. “It was really very emotional to see Brazilians there cheering in spite of the difficult times we have experienced with the demonstrations,” said the former striker in allusion to the overwhelming outpouring of support at the Maracana stadium. “Most have been peaceful although some vandals ruined the show of democracy,” Ronaldo

Hamburg take Djourou on loan BERLINL: Bundesliga side Hamburg have taken defender Johan Djourou (in pic) on a season-long loan from English Premier League outfit Arsenal, the club announced on Monday. The 26-year-old is Hamburg’s second signing in the close season after Cameroon’s Jacques Zoua joined from Basel. Djourou spent the last six months of last season on loan at another Bundesliga side, Hanover. Hamburg’s sporting director Oliver Kreuzer said Djourou was just the type of defender they had been looking for. “He ticks all the boxes in terms of what we wanted,” he said. “I am satisfied with the way that our recruitment for next season is going.” Hamburg are also pursuing veteran Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz, who was sent out on loan by 2012 Premier League champions Manchester City to Malaga last season, as well as Lasse Sobiech of Bunbdesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.

told a news conference in Rio. “I fully support the demonstrations as the Brazilian people are tired of the situation that we face,” he added, tackling headon the worst social unrest in two decades in Brazil as citizens complain too much money is being spent on the World Cup at the expense of investment in public services. Although opinion polls say most people support the World Cup despite widespread anger about the billions of dollars of public money being invested in

the event, Ronaldo and Pele have been accused in some quarters of being out of touch with the man in the street. Ronaldo caused controversy in mid-tournament when he alluded to public demands for better healthcare by saying “a World Cup isn’t made with hospitals but stadiums.” But Ronaldo, who worked as a commentator at the Confederations Cup, told reporters: “I have been out in the street, I talked with the people. “And I realise the Brazilian

people are not against the World Cup but against corruption and embezzlement and against the way the health and education systems are managed. “It has been wonderful to see the Brazilian people rise up against that situation and yet see that most demonstrations urging change have been peaceful,” said the 36-year-old. “We are seeing the results as somehow things seem to be moving swiftly and the government is responding to people’s calls,” he concluded. The Russian billionaire, still very much at the helm at Stamford Bridge, has spent an estimated £874 million ($1.33 billion) on transfers and £1.5 billion ($2.28 billion) on wages in the 10 years since he took charge of London club Chelsea on July 1, 2003. In so doing, Abramovich set a template for a host of wealthy foreign owners who’ve since taken charge of leading English football clubs and transformed the landscape of the game in its birthplace. Abramovich’s investment has so far yielded three Premier League titles — prior to that the club were last crowned champions of England in 1955 —, four FA Cups, two League Cups and, significantly, a highly coveted European Champions League title and last season’s Europa League. “It has been a hugely successful decade for Chelsea Football Club since Roman Abramovich took control, with

an unprecedented number of trophies in the last 10 years,” said Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay in a statement Monday. “The club has also taken great strides off the field in that time, adapting to meet the challenges of football’s changing landscape. “Mr Abramovich’s early investment in playing staff paid dividends in creating a team admired around the world, but to keep Chelsea among the elite we have always known we must produce our own world-class talent and we are beginning to see the benefits of our Academy, which will help us meet our long-term objectives for Financial Fair Play. “As we prepare for the next 10 years, I feel we are well positioned to continue the success we have so far enjoyed under Mr Abramovich and everybody here is determined to build on that progress we have made.” Meanwhile Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, writing in The Times, said Abramovich had transformed the west London club from mid-table mediocrity into a major global force.
