LONDON: A research suggests that Psittacosaurus, the 'parrot dinosaur' walked on four feet and then two feet some 100 million years ago in present China. It would have grown up much like the modern humans, at first exploring its world on all fours, like a toddler, and then graduating to upright motion, researchers said. Using a combination of bio-mechanical analysis and bone histology, palaeontologists from Beijing, Bristol, and Bonn have shown how one of the best-known dinosaurs switched from four feet to two as it grew. The one-year-old had long arms and short legs, and scuttled about on all fours soon after hatching. The bone sections showed that the arm bones were growing fastest when the animals were aged one to three years. Then, from four to six years, arm growth slowed down, and the leg bones showed a massive growth spurt, meaning they ended up twice as long as the arms, necessary for an animal that stood up on its hind legs as an adult. This study, the first of its kind, shows how much information is locked in the bones of dinosaurs, said a scientist. PTI

A drunken driving offender can be imprisoned for a maximum period of six months. However, the traffic commission is in the process of building a database of drunk drivers which will also be synchronised with the crime bureau and provided to various official correspondents. If an offender is caught three times, not only will his driving licence be cancelled, the offence will also cost him loss of valuable documents and identity proof such as a passport.

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity 1992 has a Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. This includes a series of goals and targets known as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. Target 1 requires that ‘by 2020, at the latest, people are aware of the values of biodiversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably.’ Modern zoos claim to have an educational role in teaching the public about conservation and environmental issues.

and regular discussions and talks. Most importantly, educators are adopting modified poems and stories that debunk stereotypes that relegate women to the kitchen and see them as only homemakers. A case in point is Little Red Riding Hood, where a wolf disguises itself as her grandmother and attacks the child. In the original a woodcutter saves the girl but she is now well-prepared to deal with such situations.

"Such steps are necessary because our stories and poems show women as homemakers and getting married. Women have so many roles to play other than that. Modifying contents will go a long way because such poems are taught to us from our childhood. The administration’s attempt to introduce bio-metric attendance system in the State secretariat, a part of its effort to streamline governance is opposed tooth and nail by the employees unions. The novel initiative launched last week as a pilot project for the finance department saw stiff resistance for obvious reasons. Scores of employees of the finance department yesterday staged a protest before the chambers of their department head, V Bhaskar, principal secretary of the finance department. They demanded that the State government should implement the biometric system for all Secretariat employees instead of the finance department only. The repeated explanations of the Principal Secretary that the system was introduced on a pilot basis following the direction of Chief Secretary PK Mohanty did not satisfy the agitated

HYDERABAD: The Sharik Hasan quartet has only been playing together for 16 days, but you’d never know it if you were to meet them or hear them perform. What accounts for this easy camaraderie? Their shared passion for music. Passion aside, with Sharik Hasan on the piano, Adam Larson on saxophone, Philippe Lemm on drums and Raviv Markovitz manning the double bass, this quartet is a bundle of young talent. “When you’re on tour, the one thing you don’t want to worry about is the music,” says Adam. “With good musicians, you know they’ll put in the work.” And with this quartet, not knowing the material is not an option. Ask them about their practice schedules and all of them break out into long explanations. “You can see it is a sensitive topic for all of us. When you’re playing gigs, you want to be practising, and when you’re practising, you

Philippe, a recent graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, will also be teaching there from September. Teaching is an important part of Adam’s life as well. “I started teaching when I was around 16. I believe it does help my music. It helps me articulate my ideas better. Because if I can’t explain it so that someone can go home and practice, I need to re-examine my understanding of the matter,” he says. Does it ever bother them that jazz isn’t the most popular genre? Sometimes, they say. But that isn’t the point. Philippe says, “With us, the audience may be small but the music is for insiders, who really appreciate it. I like that. People who come to our performances are either there for the music or they are open minded enough to try it. I think this keeps us true to our music, which is great.”

When you think of art, you think Kalakriti art gallery. Now in its 11th year, Kalakriti has curated numerous artists of repute, and seen them through their journey from day one. It was the initiative of businessman Prshant Lahoti. Postnoon finds out how his journey with Kalakriti has been. start selling on day 1. You need to select artists and artists should have faith in you.

KANCHAN AGARWAL kanchan.a@postnoon.com Tell us how Kalakriti art gallery came about. I always loved art and antiques. In 2002, there came an opportunity where I could open a gallery. I thought to enter into art, and reach its depth, and if I want to make a difference, the best option would be to open an art gallery. That’s how Kalakriti came about.

Patience and dedication make the big picture. What are the tiny details that are involved in this work? It is a very simple thing. Whatever you say, art is elitist. When you are selling something elitist, the whole concept, the space, every detail in the gallery, and during the show, should be perfect. You can’t have a gallery anywhere you find space. I used to train my staff how to exactly put a painting, not slanting even by 1 mm. We still check with spirit level if it is straight. check distance between two paintings. We decide which paintings should go where. Coming to the details involved — The title, a small write up about the show and artist’s comfort with you. You need give all the support to the artist. He does not want the headache of setting it up. The gallery should provide all that. These finer details count.

How were the first few months? They were very tough. I was very new to the business of art. I didn’t know many artists personally. The gallery was new so no one knew about it. But I knew a few people who were deeply involved in the workings of art and they guided me. What did it take to make Kalakriti what it is today? Focus on what we want. In spite of its commercial aspects, my work is driven more by passion. We were very clear that whatever shows we do, will not be due to their commercial aspect. If a show has to be here and is an important show, even if there are no chances of sale, we have done those. We never looked into what expenses we will have to bear. People knew if they came here, they would find quality.

It takes 20 shows to see how the artist has groomed over time..

How do you think the gallery is doing now? We have a long way to go. This being our 11th year, we are trying to look towards the future. There are a lot of upcoming artists, who Hyderabad may not relate to today, but people will start relating to tomorrow. We are looking at bringing more contemporary and cutting edge art.

Wherever we saw potential in terms of talent, and dedication. We have not seen the commercial aspects.

Considered Asia’s single largest diocese, it is among the oldest and the grandest churches in the country. The cathedral was built in 1924 by a Wesleylan missionary from England named Charles Walker Posnett, who was posted to Hyderabad as a chaplain in the British Army and was later transferred to Medak. When the famine struck the people of Medak during the time, Posnett provided them food in return for their help in constructing the church, which took over 10 years for completion. It is regarded as the only church in the country that can hold 5,000 people at a time. With intricately patterned mosaic floors laid by Italian masons, mas-

sive pillars built with finely hewn grey stones supporting the vast expanse of ceiling and numerous arches, the cathedral is over 100ft high and 200ft wide and a stunning example of Gothic architecture. But the thing that really makes this church magnificent are three ethereally beautiful stained glass windows depicting different periods of Jesus Christ’s life — ascension, nativity and crucifixion — painted by the famous English artist Sir Frank Owen Salisbury over the course of 50 years. Today, the diocese of Medak is among the largest in the Christian world overseeing 1,500 congregations across five major districts in AP, i.e., Adilabad, Medak, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad. Also, in addition to the sprawling monument, the cathedral compound also houses an old-age home, residential hostel for boys and girls and several educational institutions.

Hollywood directors and novelists have made the CIA famous for its undercover agents in the field, but in the digital era, the hi-tech NSA may represent the most far-reaching arm of the country's 16 spy agencies, with its intelligence at the center of decision-making and military planning, experts say. The latest leak from Snowden alleges the NSA has been eavesdropping on US allies, including the European Union offices in Washington, which would fit in with the agency's ability to scoop up any conversation or email relevant to "foreign targets." Created after World War II to avoid another Pearl Harbor-style surprise attack, the NSA "has transformed itself into the largest, most covert, and potentially most intrusive intelligence agency ever created," wrote author James Bamford, whose books helped lift the lid on the agency's work. By 2050, one in three people there will be over 60. Yet, even in India, stories of the elderly being ill-treated by children over property matters and helpless parents languishing in old age homes in pathetic conditions are common. The new Chinese law also makes it mandatory for companies to grant at least 20 days of annual leave to employees who do not live in the same town as their parents. The young vibrant online community in the world’s largest country has not taken the new diktat too well. Many elders live even without a pension after pledging their life savings for the welfare of their children. We need to refocus on traditional values and filial piety. If the young are not willing to take care of a group, which they would also fit in to soon, social security measures by the government are inevitable.

ivek Kumar has seven years of work experience in the software industry. Today, he is working a nine-eight shift, sometimes puts in extra hours, and is first in line to the CEO’s chair. It is a smaller MNC compared with the one he was working at earlier where he was the marketing and sales head. There he was earning `14lakh per annum, here it is `10 lakh. So, in order to make up somewhat for that dip in finances he is freelancing as a market guru online. Was it a wise decision taking the pay cut? “It was one of the most difficult decisions I took in my life,” Vivek says. “Now I don’t regret it at all. I took the cut because I liked what my company was offering. Space to be myself, widen my scope and I got additional amenities like housing, insurance for family and parents and a paid holiday a year. So what if the package is not hefty, I think this company will take me places and it just suited my requirements.” Krutika Manchanda, too, has an interesting tale to tell. She started working as an engineer, then decided to become a journalist. She completed a journalism course and got a job with a national daily. Since it was a new field, her pay was less compared with what she got as an engineer. Two years into the job, boredom crept in and she began to look for new avenues. Her next stint was as a teacher with an NGO, despite a drastic drop in the pay. Vivek and Krutika are examples of a new breed of professionals who are looking for more than money from a job. In today’s world, maintaining salary packages is difficult, but many should find a pay cut a bitter pill to swallow.

Krutika Manchanda started working as an engineer. She completed a journalism course and got a job with a national daily later. But, her pay was less in comparison. Her next stint was as a teacher with an NGO, despite a drastic drop in the pay.

Some recruiters agree. They say that going by the economic situation in the country and the availability of jobs, it’s going to be more agreeable for people to take a pay cut as it does not carry the negative stigma that it does in times of boom. Sometimes taking a pay cut is the right career move. For some, it’s all about job satisfaction. Sanjeev Dikshit, a senior communications executive with a Singapore-based company tells us why he left his plum job as a senior data analyst with a leading software company in India, opted to go abroad and that too with a pay cut. He says, “By trading that six figure sum and all that data sheets for interviews and meeting new people and being in Singapore I found happiness. The pay cut was a small price to pay. I think I have made a smart decision. If you find the right kind of place and work, the money does not matter much. Plus, two years down the line when I look for better opportunities back in India, I am sure I will be compensated well.” In a society that has been taught to pursue ever-increasing pay checks, we are learning that sometimes taking a pay cut can actually be the more prudent career move.

hen another family breaks, my family is fed. Am I evil or just a common man doing his job? I am a divorce lawyer. In fact, I am a Family Court lawyer because I didn't want to deal with hardcore criminal cases. Like any of you software engineers, entrepreneurs and journalists, I have also had ambitions to do well in my career. As an amateur, I have done what I thought I had to do — ensure my clients go back with a divorce. Did I traverse them to a happy life or not, I didn’t give it much thought. Did they have children? Maybe. But, that didn’t stop me. Did I make enough money? I sure did. All those morals and values imbibed in childhood had to play their roles someday. And they did. They decided to make me believe I was the cause of numerous unhappy couples and broken families. They told me innocent children were now suffering and visiting shrinks because of me. There has been guilt. There has been success, too. I am now a known divorce lawyer. You want to get rid of your spouse quickly and hassle free? I am the guy. Of course, as is the nature of universe, what went around, had to come around. I had to witness my little niece be the victim of two adults’ self-centered, petty and ugly married life. I saw how they bickered and hated each other and how my niece thought she was the cause of it all. I could not save a family that close to me, but there has since been a change in me. Now I don’t go to work thinking ‘I must file that divorce’. Now I hear from myself ‘let me see how I can save that couple’. My conviction, anyway, can do only so much. When a man and a woman have had enough of each other, when there is no love left, nothing can keep them together. Unfortunately or fortunately (as divorce opens new avenues for each of them), I have to be the mediator of this change. The burden of breaking a family gets to me, it’s no making up for the loss but for self validation that I help couples who want to register their marriage free of cost. I am guilty but I can’t help it. It is my job.

If cirrhosis hasn't occurred as yet, the liver will be able to regenerate. Vitamins, especially B-complex and folic acid, can help reverse malnutrition. If there is a lot of liver damage, there may be need for a liver transplant. The side effects of cirrhosis will also have to be managed.

Primary liver cancer is a rare but serious form of cancer that starts in the liver. Although the exact cause of liver cancer is unknown, it is thought to be related to damage to the liver, such as cirrhosis. It is also believed that obesity may increase the risk of liver cancer due to its links with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Symptoms n Unexplained weight loss n Nausea n Vomiting n Tiredness n Jaundice n Itchy skin n Feeling tired and weak

Treatment Treatments used to treat primary liver cancer include surgery, chemoembolisation, tumour ablation, chemotherapy and biological therapy. Radiotherapy may occasionally be used. In people with earlystage liver cancer, surgery is often done with the aim of curing the cancer. If it is at a more advanced stage, the treatment may only be able to control it, and improve quality of life.

Fatty liver disease If fat makes up more than five to 10 per cent of the liver, the patient may be suffering from alcoholic or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Alcoholism, hepatitis C, obesity, and an overload of iron can cause it. Some drugs and hereditary factors can also cause fatty liver. Symptoms n Fatigue n Weight loss or loss of appetite n Weakness n Nausea n Confusion, impaired judgment, or trouble concentrating n An enlarged liver n Patchy, dark skin discolouration, usually on the neck or underarm area Treatment There is no specific treatment at this time for fatty liver disease. However, getting treatment for any underlying disease, such as diabetes, is essential. If you have alcoholic liver disease and you are a heavy drinker, quitting drinking is the most important thing you can do. Losing weight gradually will also help.

Liver cysts are abnormal, fluid-filled structures. They are mostly congenital, but in some cases, they can be caused by infections. Liver cysts do not impair the liverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to function. They are usually benign and the only patients who require treatment for cysts are those who exhibit symptoms. In some cases, cystic tumours, which are growths that may become malignant over the course of many years, can form. Symptoms Liver cysts usually do not cause any symp-

toms. However, if a cyst becomes large, it can cause bloating and pain in the upper abdomen. Some cysts grow so large that you can feel them through the abdomen. Treatment Simply removing the fluid from the cyst with a needle is not effective because the cyst fills up again within several days. The best treatment is to remove a large portion of the cyst wall. This surgical procedure can usually be done through the laparoscope, which requires only 2-3 small incisions and an overnight stay in the hospital. Cystic tumours must be completely removed surgically.

Hepatitis is a medical condition defined by the inflammation of the liver and characterised by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. The condition can be self-limiting (healing on its own) or can progress to fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis. Hepatitis viruses are the main cause of the disease, but other infections, overconsumption of alcohol and autoimmune diseases can also be responsible. Symptoms n Flu-like symptoms n Profound loss of appetite n Aversion to smoking among smokers n Dark urine n Jaundice n Peripheral oedema Treatment Bed rest, abstaining from alcohol, and taking medication will help relieve symptoms. unasekhar’s upcoming magnum opus, Rudramadevi , starring Anushka, Rana, Suman, Krishnam Raju among many others, is raising quite a few eyebrows these days. The director revealed that so far 35 per cent of the film’s shooting has been wrapped up and after they watched the film’s rushes at IMAX 3D, the entire team is all the more confident about how the film is shaping up. Anushka, who’s playing the titular role in the movie, will reportedly be seen in jewellery worth a whopping `5 crore, which is more than the entire budget of several low budget films these days. Gunasekhar had roped in costume designer Neeta Lulla, who had earlier worked on Jodha Akbar, to create the right look for Anushka and buzz is that Neeta Lulla has used real diamonds and gold to design Anushka’s look. The director was so impressed with the output that he went on to claim that Anushka’s regal avatar in the film will be as good as Aishwarya Rai’s in Jodha Akbar. In the past, the makers of Arundhati and Nagavalli, had spent a lot to create the right look for Anushka in their respective films; however, none of them have gone to the extent of shelling out as much as Gunasekhar has done for Rudramadevi. For Nagavalli, the makers had tied up with a leading jewellery brand in the South to design various ornaments which Anushka had worn in the film. Going by all these reports, it’s quite possible that Rudramadevi will emerge as one of the biggest budgeted films ever made in Telugu. It’s also the first historical Indian film to be shot in 3D format and Gunasekhar has roped in several technicians from Germany to work on the film. Thota Tharani is the art director and buzz is that he’s building 11 different sets to recreate the grandeur of Kakatiya kingdom. Ilayaraja is scoring the music and Gunasekhar is planning to wrap up the film by December this year.

Kiran Rao says her experience has taught her that filmmakers, who are swimming against the tide, should stay true to themselves to get recognition. The 39-year-old started her work as an assistant director in Oscar nominated 2001 movie Lagaan and continued the learning process in films like Monsoon Wedding, Saathiya and Swades, before directing her first film Dhobi Ghat in 2010. “The struggle is the same for any new filmmaker in the world and I don’t think India is any different. All first-time filmmakers who are doing something different and against the tide are going to struggle. There is no one way to fix that struggle. The best way to do it is to retain your identity and be true to yourself,” Rao said. “Let the project speak for itself because if you are excited about it, the excitement will communicate on its own. Then the merit of the project attracts people. Whatever you do, the project has to be of a certain quality and then it will get the support,” she added. Even though typical masala movies do not interest her, box-office successes make her happy. “When a film does well, it is good for the whole industry. I always feel good when films are doing well but get annoyed when a bad film does very good business. That becomes a little disappointing for a filmmaker. “You feel that the film did not have anything in it to do that great business, but you never know what the audience likes,” she said, and added that she is “never against commercial success”. “It is nice and encouraging even for a smallest filmmaker and indicative of a healthy environment for a film,” she explained. “There is a greater understanding now between the industry and the audience. They are not limited to movies being shown in theatres; they have access to television shows, music, literature and art from around the world... the audience can now go out and watch a film that they want to see,” Rao said. Describing the new trend as a “great thing”, she said it allows filmmakers to produce different material. “Now we have access to different kinds of films. And that is a fair thing. SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Swann was hit on his right forearm by Essex paceman Tymal Mills while batting on Monday in England’s first innings 413 for nine declared. England’s leading spinner continued his innings but did not take the field when Essex batted and was instead sent to hospital for an X-ray.
