There is more to it than meets the eye in Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s open defiance of the party high command on the division of the State. Either he is mustering the courage to come out and be the champion of Seemandhra or he is the Congress’s front in the plan to decimate Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRC which is hugely popular with its opposition to Telangana.

The group was founded by another brother, Amado Carrillo Fuentes, alias "The Lord of the Skies," who died in mysterious circumstances following plastic surgery in 1997. According to the weekly magazine Proceso, the Juarez gang was in an intense turf war in several northwestern states against the Sinaloa cartel led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, Mexico’s most wanted man. The two cartels waged a fierce battle for control of Ciudad Juarez in recent years and Guzman is believed to have come out on top. Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: There is more to it than meets the eye in Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s open defiance of the party high command on division of Telangana. Either he is mustering courage to come out and champion Seemandhra’s cause, or he is at the front of the Congress plan to pose as rebel to decimate Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRC which is hugely popular with its vehement opposition to T state. Is the Congress high command inching towards effecting a change of guard in the State? The political developments that took place in the last couple of days indicate this. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy had said recently that no political party is above people's aspirations, as they have the power of deciding the fortunes of any political party. According to highly placed sources in the party, the chief minister's statement was made with an objective of taking on party high command even if it meant losing his position. "His statement is nothing but an open challenge to the party high command and its decision to create a separate Telangana state. This is the second such instance of Kiran’s open defiance. The party leadership would not tolerate it and would definitely take disciplinary action against the CM including removing him from the CM's post," an AICC Leader told Postnoon. The leader said that the party
CONGRESS STRATEGY?

Is the Congress high command inching towards effecting a change of guard in the State? The recent political developments hint at that.
There is another school of thought. A senior Congress leader who is very close to the party high command hinted that it was the party strategy to decimate the YS Jagan factor in Seemandhra region by making CM Kiran the undisputed leader in the region. "After the T-decision, Seemandhra has become a boiling cauldron. The Congress will never win elections after the division. But it can do so by having a secret understanding with other political parties," he said. The leader further added that the CM may form a separate party to help the Congress after the next polls. "Only the CM can save the party, as he had already become popular with his argument for a united Andhra.” So they contend that it was a strategy where he would disagree with the party decision and cash in on the antiCentre sentiments. The CM may be replaced by any Telangana leader like Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy or former PCC president D Srinivas if he is shown the door. If Reddy is made the martyr and he floats his own party, the high command could take him back after elections. What all matters to the Congress in Delhi is the number.

The battle is to convince Seemandhra people and leaders to drop their protest and agree for the division of the state. leaders are being misled by a handful of selfish politicians, who want to dominate the Telangana people and protect their valuable properties," Senior Congress Leader and Rajyasabha V Hanumantha Rao told Postnoon. He appealed to the Seemandhra people to stop their agitation and cooperate with the division. Another Congress leader G Niranjan felt that the continuous agitation by Seemandhra people is likely to lead to severe internal disturbances if not stopped. He said that the Telangana
congress leaders are taking all possible measures to prevent such a situation. "The people of Telangana are holding peace rallies to express their solidarity with the Seemandhra people. But if they continue to hold their agitations without putting forth legitimate demands, then it would lead to internal disturbance. We are trying to avert such a situation," he said. The leaders are planning to hold their innovative programmes through Telangana Congress Monitoring Group , which was founded to achieve the Separate telangana state a couple of years ago.

DATTATREYA’S LETTER TO THE PM
‘Manmohan must apologise and quit’ In an open letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former minister and BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya accuses him of utter failure in managing the economy; of perjury, incompetence and criminal negligence of the common man POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Accusing the ‘economist’ Prime Minister of abandoning the common man and bringing misery to millions who voted for him, the BJP’s national vice-president Bandaru Dattatreya has in an open letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the economic managers he presides over have become economic damagers and the best course open to the Congress party was to apologise and quit. This is the darkest period of Indian economy after Independence. The historic devaluation of the Indian rupee to `68.80 per US dollar signals the decline of the mighty Indian economy. As an economist, you are aware that devaluation of the Indian rupee leads to inflation. In
turn, inflation reduces the purchasing power of the middle class. As a result, the slow down of demand impacts manufacturing and then after employment. This cascading effect reduces our growth rate and national standing in the comity of nations.” Dattatreya also questioned the unbridled flow of foreign capital into India and lack of vigil contributing to the flight of capital and debilitating inflation. “The devaluation of the Indian rupee has a wide range of implications. At the nation level, the cost of imports shall upwardly spiral. Oil imports being substantial the burden shall affect the cost of goods and services taking them far beyond the affordability levels of the common man. The oil imports in rupee terms has increased to `5676.7 crores according to ASSOCHAM.”

Abbott not fit talk foreign policy: Rudd SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Monday likened rival Tony Abbott's "baddies versus baddies" comments on Syria to a children's game of "Cowboys and Indians", saying he was unfit to deal with foreign policy. Abbott is the frontrunner to win September 7 elections over centre-left Labor incumbent Rudd, with a new poll on Monday showing he has overtaken his rival as preferred prime minister for the first time in four years. The Newspoll in The Australian showed 43 percent of voters now see Abbott as the better prime minister to

Rudd's 41 percent, while his conservative coalition has opened a 54 to 46 percent lead over Labor on a two-party basis. While Abbott is on track for victory, his diplomatic credentials are being increasingly questioned after he said on Sunday the escalating Syria conflict "is not goodies versus baddies, it is baddies versus baddies". Rudd said the simplistic language trivialised the matter. "International relations is more complex than a 1950s John Wayne western," said Rudd, a Mandarin-speaking former foreign minister and diplomat. We're talking about serious matters of international security and international relations and the alternative prime minister is referring to this as no more complex than goodies and baddies. "These remarks demonstrate that he is not competent and not comfortable with national security and foreign policy." Abbott, described by Rudd last week as "an exceptionally aggressive politician", defended his remarks, saying: "I've made the point that this is a civil war between two more or less equally unsavoury sides." While Abbott seems destined to become Australia's next leader, he played down the latest opinion poll, warning his rival could never be written off. AFP

ART OF GIVING
TAKING THE LEAD
The e-commerce website theindianbrand.com by GV Keshav Reddy and his friend Ishaan Dodhiwala is making quite a splash in the City. For every product bought from the website, another will be given to the underprivileged. GV Keshav Reddy tells us more. N SHIVA KUMAR
AMY ROSE THOMAS amyrose.t@postnoon.com How did the idea of launching The Indian brand come to you? The idea of The Indian brand came from three powerful inspirations. One — being proud young Indians, we felt the need to make a difference in the world. Two — we wanted to do good for the society through a social enterprise (a for-profit company with a strong social cause attached). Three — given India's diverse cultures, numerous languages and vast history, only one facet brings people from Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh together — being Indian. We felt that we needed to create a common movement to unite the country for a brighter, stronger future. Hence the ‘The Indian’ brand was born. What are the different items that can be purchased under this label? Under our ‘One for you, one for me’ initiative, we have the ability to scale to several products. Today, with the purchase of every The Indian polo, an underprivileged Indian gets one t-shirt. Tomorrow, with the purchase of a The Indian bag, an underprivileged kid can get a schoolbag. In fact with the purchase of one The Indian spectacles in the future, an underprivileged person can be given an eye transplant. Sky is the limit with our scalable business model and we hope to do more good, with every item introduced. Tell us more about the One for you, One for me initiative. Our ‘one for you, one for me’is a unique initiative. With your purchase of any The Indian product,
one underprivileged Indian gets one too, thanks to you. It's that simple. What are the different NGOs that the company is tied up with to distribute the items being sold? Our company has not tied up with any NGO directly to distribute our giving items. The Indian believes that all our customers are our supporters. We want to have giving drives where we invite all our supporters to directly come and hand the giving items to the intended beneficiaries. Hence we have identified small pockets of society who need these basic necessities — we plan to give our items to these intended Indians through giving drives. Where will these products be sold? Do you think the mindset of the Hyderabadi has changed for the better when it comes to giving? Indians are generous, kindhearted people. We, as Hyderabadis, believe that we have the heart to do good for our society, but many a time do not find the right opportunity to give. The issue is with non-transparency of charities and not knowing where the donations end up. We hope to be extremely transparent and even invite our supporters on our giving drives. How has the reaction to The Indian brand been so far on social networking sites like Facebook? In two days, through organic growth only between our friends, The Indian brand Facebook page has reached 710 likes. Keshav has put an ambitious target of 100,000 likes in the forthcoming months.
Who are your target audience? Our target audience is young Indians in the age group of 15 and 35 years. But today, our grandfathers are young in their own right wearing polos as they do. The elders are well within our target audience as well, since they are more often than not more patriotic than the younger generations. Do you plan to launch more green and environment-friendly items under the label?
Yes, we are a young enterprise using eco-friendly materials whenever possible. Since our business model and giving initiative is highly scalable, we can get into selling eco-friendly books and eco-friendly education tools to rural kids through technology. Will the t-shirts sold have messages printed on them? The polos have The Indian branded on them. Apart from that, shirts that are launched have India on them as well. How many are involved in the initiative? This young startup currently hires five people, but since we run only an e-commerce website, we don't need too many people. But on a broad thought we have an extended team of about 20 people in this initiative. Are you roping in celebrities to endorse the brand? No, currently we are not.

Ward boy, guard rape mentally challenged woman in hospital
WASHINGTON: Al-Qaeda and other hostile groups have repeatedly sought to infiltrate US intelligence agencies, which are investigating thousands of their employees to counter the threat, The Washington Post reported. The CIA found that about a fifth of job applicants with suspect backgrounds had “significant terrorist and/or hostile intelligence connections,” the Post cited a classified budget document as saying. The document was provided to the paper by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, now a fugitive in Russia under temporary asylum. Although the file did not describe the nature of the jobseekers’ extremist or hostile ties, it cited Hamas, Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda and its affiliates most often. The fear of infiltration is such that the NSA planned last year to investigate at least 4,000 staff who obtained security clearances. The NSA detected potentially suspicious activity among staff

PUNE: In a shocking incident, a mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped by a ward boy and a security guard in the lift of a municipal hospital at Bhosari near here, police said on Monday. Both the accused have been arrested. The 30-year-old woman, who is also speech impaired, had been admitted to the hospital from a shelter home where she lived, following health complaints on August 26. The accused allegedly took the woman to the lift on the pretext of shifting her to another ward and raped her on August 29, police said. After being discharged from the hospital on August 31, the woman returned to the shelter home where she informed about the crime to the caretaker through sign language. Following this, a case was filed leading to the arrests, police added. PTI

SYRIA STRIKE
Obama lobbies lawmakers as US says Damascus used sarin Despite the lobbying, the war-weary lawmakers and influential policy makers remain unsure of offering support. The Arab League ministers meanwhile have called for deterrent action against Syria. WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama launched an intense lobbying effort on Sunday to sway skeptical lawmakers weighing whether to support a military strike against Syria. The strategy, outlined by a senior White House official, came as Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington had proof Damascus used sarin gas in a deadly attack on August 21. Arab League foreign ministers urged the United Nations and international community to take “deterrent” action, while blaming the regime for the alleged chemical weapons assault. All the while, a defiant President Bashar al-Assad insisted that Syria would confront any military action. With all eyes on Washington, Obama — as well as Vice President Joe Biden and the White House chief of staff — made individual calls to members of Congress Sunday, according to the official. On the heels of Obama’s surprise announcement, the White House formally asked Congress on Saturday for authorisation to conduct strikes in a draft resolution framing a narrow set of
operations. But it remains to be seen if war-weary lawmakers will endorse Obama’s push for action — or hand him a bitter defeat. Many, including influential Republican Senator John McCain, remain unsure they can support the White House resolution. “In all calls and briefings, we will be making the same fundamental case: the failure to take action against Assad unravels the deterrent impact of the international norm against chemical weapons use, and it risks emboldening Assad and his key

Pushing the administration’s argument for limited military action, Kerry told US television
talkshows that hair and blood samples given to the US from emergency workers on the scene of the attack showed signs of the powerful sarin nerve gas. A key US ally, however, suggested that limited strikes were not the way to go. Meeting in Cairo, Arab League foreign ministers issued a statement calling upon the United Nations and international
community “to assume their responsibilities in line with the UN Charter and international law by taking the necessary deterrent measures." Syria’s opposition National Coalition had earlier pleaded with the ministers to back a USled strike, while Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said failure to do so would bolster Assad’s forces to “pursue its
crimes." But Assad, whose regime has faced an uprising since March 2011 that a watchdog says has cost 110,000 lives, came out swinging. “Syria... is capable of facing up to any external aggression just as it faces up to internal aggression every day, in the form of terrorist groups and those that support them," SANA news agency quoted him as saying. a rather strange twist, is the current favorite among black voters. A Quinnipiac University poll this week showed that if the election happened now, 34 per cent of black voters would choose De Blasio compared to 25 per cent for African-American candidate William Thompson, who narrowly lost to Bloomberg in 2009. De Blasio, the most left-leaning among the Democratic hopefuls, has muscled out earlier frontrunner Christine Quinn, the city
council speaker who is openly married to another woman. Seen as the anti-Bloomberg candidate, the city’s greying public advocate De Blasio has hinged his campaign on inequality, describing New York as “a tale of two cities,” the rich and the poor. He has honed in on the highly emotional debate over stop-andfrisk, a police tactic loathed by black and Hispanic communities who see themselves as unfairly targeted. All the main Democratic candidates have campaigned on the need for some sort of reform to stop-andfrisk, even more so since a federal judge said police were using
racial profiling and ruled the tactic unconstitutional. But voter Norman Frazier, 61, said De Blasio has been the most convincing. “Quinn and Thompson to me don’t wanna speak out” against stop-and-frisk, Frazier told AFP at a campaign event in Brooklyn. “From the very beginning, he (De Blasio) was against it... now they are jumping on the bandwagon.” It does not hurt that De Blasio is married to a black woman — an outspoken lesbian until she fell in love with him — and has prominently featured his bi-racial family during the campaign. NAZI ATROCITIES
In Oradour ghosts never sleep ORADOUR-SUR-GLANE: French President Francois Hollande and German counterpart Joachim Gauck will make a historic visit on Wednesday to a ghost village in west-central France where 642 people were massacred by Nazi soldiers in one of the worst atrocities during World War II. Gauck is the first German leader to visit Oradour-surGlane, where ruins from the war have been preserved as a memorial to the dead. They include a church where women and children were locked in, before toxic gas was released and the building set on fire. Some 205 children aged under 15 were among victims of the June 10, 1944 atrocity which left deep scars in France. After the war, French General Charles de Gaulle, who later became president, decided that the village should not be rebuilt but remain a memorial to the barbarity of Nazi occupation. A new village was built nearby. In 1999, French president Jacques Chirac dedicated a memorial museum which includes items recovered from what became known as the 'Village of Martyrs'. They include watches stopped at the time the owners were burnt alive, glasses melted from intense heat and other personal items. Wednesday's highly symbolic visit follows a 1984 commem-

The Battle of Verdun (February-December 1916) claimed the lives of more than 700,000 soldiers and came to symbolise the horror of war. As they stood in front of the Douaumont Ossuary, which contains the remains of 130,000 fallen soldiers, Mitterrand and Kohl joined hands - a gesture of friendship marking the lessons learned from a frightful past. But the scars run deep in Oradour where an association of families of the martyrs had thus far opposed any visit by a German leader. The two presidents are due to visit the village square where the residents were rounded up by German soldiers
ostensibly to have their identity papers checked. The women and children were then locked up in the church while the men were taken to a barn where machine guns awaited. The two presidents will be accompanied by two of the three living survivors — Robert Hebras, 88 and Jean-Marcel Darthout. Hebras, who was 19 at the time of the massacre, survived as he was buried under the corpses of others who were machine-gunned. "I was consumed by hatred and vengeance for a long time," he said, adding that Gauck's visit came at an opportune time. German prosecutors travelled to Oradour and Bordeaux in January and took witness statements from 11 survivors, consulted archives and questioned three French former soldiers involved. They expect a decision on whether a case will go to court from as early as the end of this year. Gauck, a former East German human rights activist, has already paid two visits to the sites of Nazi mass killings in Europe; the Czech village of Lidice near Prague in 2012 and the Italian hamlet of Sant'Anna di Stazzema in March this year.

FASHION
From Odisha to New York: A journey in fashion Bibhu Mohapatra, the toast of the New York fashion scene, says his interest in fashion goes back to his childhood in Orissa where, on an old sewing machine and some tutoring from his mother, he created outfits for his first muse: his sis.
ROBERT MACPHERSON Agence France-Presse NEW YORK CITY: In his studio near Times Square, Bibhu Mohapatra draped some sequined Spanish mesh fabric over a US size two mannequin and let fashion magic happen. “It reminds me of my childhood in India where you’d put up mosquito nets at night, but with a little glitter in it,” the 41year-old designer said. “It’s sheer, but it drapes beautifully, so I’m trying to figure out how to utilize it.” Such scenes of experimentation are unfolding in fashion houses big and small in the runup to the Spring 2014 collections that start coming down the runway in New York on Thursday. More than 300 shows and presentations are on the schedule at Lincoln Centre and other venues, before the fashion spotlight swings over to London, Milan and Paris. Mohapatra will send out his latest for the namesake label on September 11, but if he’s feeling the pressure, he doesn’t show it. In a black T-shirt, jeans and sneakers, he’s a serene presence in the 11th floor studio/showroom/atelier where he employs seven people full time, up from two when he started out nearly five years ago. “It’s been really quite an interesting journey,” he said. “As long as you’re open to
learning, then you can really build something.” Mohapatra’s interest in fashion goes back to his childhood in Orissa: on an old sewing machine and some tutoring from his mother, he created outfits for his first muse: his sister. What he calls “a detour in my life” led him in 1996 to university in the western US state of Utah, where he picked up a graduate degree in economics. Moving to New York, he enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology, won its Critic’s Award for Best Evening Wear Designer in his senior year, interned at Halston, then spent eight years as design director at J Mendel. Since striking out on his own, his list of clients and fans has grown to include Hollywood stars and First Lady Michelle Obama, who selected a yellow print dress from his 2012 resort collection for a talkshow appearance. This season, Mohapatra is taking inspiration from Wendy Whelan, a close friend who is reinventing herself through modern dance at the age of 41 after retiring as principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. “She’s like a little kid trying to explore a new world,” he said. “She’s an artist and she’s found a new language with which to express herself.” He can relate to that, as his business shifts into a higher gear and his profile grows in Asia thanks to an exclusive

agreement with Hong Kongbased luxury retailer Lane Crawford. “I’m at a stage where I want to experiment with fabrics and materials and mix everything,” he said. “My field of research is kind of boundary-less and I draw inspiration from everything, everywhere.” Turning inspiration into reality typically involves a lot of drawing. “Getting an idea on a piece of paper,” he said, “It takes a long time — sometimes a week, sometimes a couple of weeks.” If designer’s block ever strikes, Mohapatra flees New York for the solitude of “my tiny little house” in rural Columbia County, a couple of hours by train up the Hudson River. It was near there, inside a 19th century manor turned women’s prison, that he filmed a haunted-house video showcasing his fall 2013 collection inspired by surrealist Man Ray and 1920s Paris. “I’m a homebody,” said the designer who shuns the hardpartying side of the fashion world.
“Every time my evening plans fall through, I’m like, ‘Woo-hoo, going home, watching TV, ordering in food.’” Twice a year, Mohapatra visits India, where he is participating in a government-backed effort to revive the manufacture of traditional handloom textiles in Orissa. “I do miss India,” he says. “I miss the people. I miss the food... It’s very inspiring, going to villages and seeing a w h o l e other world of artistry that has been alive for generations. It just really makes you humble.” Going forward, Mohapatra says the label that bears his name “definitely has to be bigger.” Key to that vision is building a retail presence within three years in New York and beyond. “We are pretty well recognized in the Middle East and now we’re starting to be in Asia with the best partner you can ask for. It’s baby steps.”

GENEVA: As Roberto Azevedo (in pic) takes the helm of the World Trade Organization on Sunday, observers say he must move swiftly to revive deadlocked trade talks and restore confidence in the body. “The new director general faces a big job. He needs to move rather quickly and assertively. He must be bold,” Sergio Marchi, Canada’s for-
mer trade minister and WTO ambassador, told AFP. Brazilian career diplomat Azevedo replaces Frenchman Pascal Lamy, who spent eight years at the head of the organisation that sets the rules for global commerce. Reached by AFP three days before the handover, Azevedo said he would not be talking to reporters before he heads to St Petersburg next week for a G20 summit. Lamy meanwhile told Swiss public radio last week
that he planned to return home to Normandy in northern France on his first day off the job and “take the time to
think.” It’s understandable that the 66-year-old might need to catch his breath: he says he has logged some 450,000 kilometres (280,000 miles) of travel on average each year as head of the WTO in his bid to bring the world’s decision makers to the table and unlock stalled global trade talks. Lamy has overseen a vast expansion of the world trade body to 159 member countries — 11 more than eight years ago. AFP

Vodafone set to announce $130bn Verizon sale: Reports Vodafone has confirmed that it was in advanced talks with Verizon Communications regarding the disposal of Vodafone’s US group.
LONDON: British telecoms giant Vodafone has agreed to sell its US wireless joint venture stake to partner Verizon in a deal worth $130 billion (98.5 billion euros), newspapers reported on Sunday. Vodafone on Sunday confirmed that it was in advanced talks with Verizon Communications “regarding the disposal of Vodafone’s US group”, but played down press reports that the deal was complete. A company statement warned there was “no certainty that an agreement will be reached,” but said a further announcement would be made “as soon as practicable”. Verizon’s board of directors will meet on Monday to finalise the terms of the agreement that would see Vodafone sell its 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless, giving the US fixedline company full control after
Verizon has been looking to take full control of the joint venture for many years but negotiations have floundered on the sale price. 13 years of shared ownership, the Financial Times reported. The business daily added that Vodafone’s board had already met on Sunday to
approve the deal, which the company said would “substantially comprise a mixture of Verizon common stock and cash.” The Guardian reported that the split between shares and cash would be roughly 50-50. The Wall Street Journal called it the second most important acquisition of all time after Vodafone’s takeover of Mannesmann in 1999 for around $203 billion. The US daily claimed that the new deal would be announced “Monday afternoon”, quoting a person close to the negotiations. Verizon spokesman Bob Varettoni on Sunday told AFP that he would not comment on the latest reports. Created in 2000, Verizon Wireless operates over 100 millions lines and employs 73,4000 staff. Headquartered in Basking
Ridge, New Jersey, the company generated revenues of $75.9bn in 2012, according to its website. Verizon has been looking to take full control of the joint venture for many years but negotiations have floundered on the sale price with the US company hoping to pay around $100 billion for Vodafone’s stake. The deal is likely to be structured so that Vodafone is shielded from a hefty tax hit “Vodafone would be hit with a huge tax bill, they are talking about $30-40 billion,” Morningstar analyst Allan Nichols said. “But there are some ways around and under $10bn would be more likely,” he added. Verizon is reported to be financing the deal through a mixture of loans and corporate bonds created by JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Barclays and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. AFP

The average price of new homes in 100 major cities rose 8.61 per cent year on year to 10,442 yuan ($1,700) per square metre, according to the independent China Index Academy (CIA). Prices rose 7.94 per cent in July, according to the CIA, which is owned by Soufun Holdings, China's largest real estate website operator. Month on month, prices were up 0.92 per cent, marking the 15th straight month of growth and accelerating from July's 0.87 per cent.

Chancellor of all she surveys THE BERLIN DIARIES Deborah Cole
C
hancellor Angela Merkel, the unassuming German proclaimed Europe’s most influential leader and the world’s most powerful woman, inspires a heady mix of admiration, derision and fear. After eight years at the helm of the top European economy, and three as the go-to leader in the eurozone crisis, Merkel looks set to sail to a third term in the September 22 German general election on the back of her enormous popularity among voters. Meanwhile abroad, angry protesters have marched through the streets of Athens, Lisbon and Madrid blaming her for budget cuts they say are choking off desperately needed economic growth, some even brandishing caricatures of Merkel in Nazi garb. Yet few deny that any solutions are, for now, impossible without the 59-year-old woman nicknamed “Mutti” or mum in Germany. “I am determined to see Europe emerge stronger from the crisis,” she intones regularly. “Germany can only be strong with a strong Europe.” But during a widely criticised campaign virtually devoid of real issues, observers complain that she has lulled the prosperous country into a false sense of security 23 years after its joyful reunification. “Merkel perfectly embodies the sensibilities of the Germans in the early 21st century, “ the publisher of the weekly Die Zeit, Josef Joffe, wrote last month. “You don’t have to expect any threatening new tacks from her, no tough decisions for or against. She is perfectly predictable in her flexibility and the risk-
averse electorate loves it. Merkel is us, and we are Merkel.” Her late biographer Gerd Langguth found a “sphinx-like quality” in her, allowing her to quietly triumph in the most unlikely circumstances. Merkel dispensed with rivals in her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) despite being a misfit in a party of mainly Roman Catholic family men from the wealthy southwest. Merkel, a twice-married childless Protestant raised in communist East Germany, has since become the unchallenged conservative leader of her generation. The girl born Angela Kasner in 1954 left Hamburg, in then West Germany, a few weeks after her birth when her
Protestant preacher father decided to tend to the flock in the East. Locals remember her fierce intellect and discretion as a Christian in a totalitarian state. She earned a physics doctorate, married and divorced fellow student Ulrich Merkel, and stayed out of politics until the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. In 1990 she joined the CDU and won her first parliamentary seat. Then chancellor Helmut Kohl made her minister for women’s issues and later environmental affairs, and bestowed on her the fond but patronising nickname “the girl”. But in 2000, the frumpy newcomer rose to the head of the CDU when she alone had the courage to tell Kohl to quit as party chairman over a slush fund scandal. In 2005 she unseated Social
Democratic (SPD) chancellor Gerhard Schroeder after seven years in power, becoming Germany’s first female chancellor as well as its youngest. She is also the only woman to lead a major European power since Margaret Thatcher of Britain. During her first term, Merkel presided over a loveless “grand coalition” between the conservatives and their traditional rivals, the SPD. Her decisive victory in the 2009 vote allowed her to drop the SPD in favour of the smaller, pro-business Free Democrats, in theory giving her more scope to set her own course. However, their alliance has been fractious, undermining its popularity even as Merkel has consolidated her own standing. Forbes magazine has named her the world’s most powerful woman for seven out of the last eight years, and she insists despite the friction that hers is the “most successful government since reunification” in 1990. A lover of German opera, French red wine and walking holidays in the Italian mountains, Merkel has repeatedly pointed to the iconic Swabian housewife — a paragon of thrift and self-control — as her model. Indeed she shuns the trappings of power, wearing boxy trouser suits, spending precious free weekends in her spartan dacha north of Berlin, and doing her own shopping at a discount supermarket near her home in the city centre. Critics say her own science background leads her to scrutinise the minutiae and at times dither, which in the euro crisis has left ailing European partners to twist in the wind. Rivals also find her chameleon-like qualities exasperating. She has said that while she finds some of the most virulent criticism of her unfair, she lets it wash over her as the price of power. AFP
EDITORIALS Moily’s oily problem Remembering the poets
V
erappa Moily’s comments that India should risk alienating the US (and let’s face it, most of the West that matters) by buying Iranian oil and thereby saving $8.5bn, smacks of myopia. Iran is in a state of transition at the moment. A moderate is now in power and he could well force the dialogue channels open with the West. Of course, a lot will depend on whether the US Congress votes for military action in Syria, and what president Barack Obama will do with the go-ahead. Irking an ally, albeit a moody one, at a time when the Middle East’s theatrical stage is set for a new cast and maybe even some new sets seems to stem from a misplaced sense of bravado, rather than any solid economic foundation. As oil minister, Moily should know better than most that the politics of the region can flip on a dime and casting your lot with a global pariah could end up being detrimental to not only the economic pillars of this country, but also crack our national security facade. The US and Western Europe wield a stick more powerful than any weapon in their arsenals: business and investment. With India on tenuous ground with China, we need the West’s money to keep pouring in. So let’s spend $8.5bn rather than lose a whole lot more.
READERS’ VIEWS
T
he death of Irish poet Seamus Heaney should have left very few dry eyes among poetry-lovers across the world, but then again are there any poetry-lovers left? To many students of ‘English Literature’ (that bugbear of editors across the globe) poetry starts and ends with the mushy triad of Keats, Byron and Shelley, but it’s so much more. It’s about Dylan Thomas, and Sigfried Sassoon; it’s about Elizabeth Browning and Christina Rossetti. It’s about having the ability to “to see a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wild flower/Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour.” That was William Blake’s Auguries of Innocence, and as poetry dies, so does our innate ability to feel. Be at peace Seamus.

plashing Up In Style fest held at Hamstech Institute of Fashion and Interior Design was a fun affair. The event was organised in order to encourage the creativity of the first year students in the Interior Design batch. Students at the institute came up with a wide range of designing concepts surprising the faculty and seniors alike. Ajita Reddy, founder of Hamstech Institute of Fashion and Interior Design, says, “Our intention was to make the kids think. With thought, you can transform something simple into great design.” More often than not people relate interior designing to extravagance. This fest clearly busts that myth. One doesn’t need expensive materials to make a place look good. “It was stressed that the cost be kept in check and materials found at home be used. One couldn’t use materials and artefacts which would break the budget. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to give a facelift to your décor. You just need to visualise the final product and think on how to beautify the surroundings,” she says.

What made this fest different was that even parents were invited over to witness their kids’ creativity . “They were in for a surprise since mostly the materials used by the students were those which lying around in the house without much use of,” Ajita Reddy says.

EUROPEAN MEN GREW 11cm IN 110 YEARS
The average height of European men rose by 11 centimetres (4.4 inches) between 1870 and 1980, an unprecedented spurt linked mainly to better health, a study published on Monday says. The estimate is garnered from military, medical and other records from 15 countries for young adult males aged around 21.

More fresh fruit deters diabetes; juice boosts risk People who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits reduced their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent compared to those who ate less than one serving. PARIS: Eating more whole fresh fruit, especially blueberries, grapes, apples and pears, is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, but drinking more fruit juice has the opposite effect, says a study. British, US and Singaporean researchers pored over data from three big health investigations that took place in the United States, spanning a quarter of a century in all. More than 187,000 nurses and other professional caregivers were enrolled. Their health was monitored over the following years, and they regularly answered questionnaires on their eating habits, weight, smoking, physical activity and other pointers to lifestyle. Around 6.5 percent of the volunteers developed diabetes during the studies. People who ate at least two servings each week of certain
whole fruits, especially blueberries, grapes and apples, reduced their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent compared to those who ate less than one serving per month.
Those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day saw their risk of Type 2 diabetes increase by as much as 21 per cent, the study has found. “Our findings provide novel evidence suggesting certain fruits may be especially beneficial for lower diabetes risk," said Qi Sun, an assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. On the other hand, those who
consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day saw their risk of the disease increase by as much as 21 percent. Swapping three servings of juice per week for whole fruits resulted in a seven-percent reduction in risk, although there was no such difference with strawberries and cantaloupe melon. The paper, published on Friday by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), says further work is needed to to explore this “significant” difference. It speculates that, even if the nutritional values of whole fruit and fruit juice are similar, the difference lies with the fact that one food is a semi-solid and the
other a liquid. “Fluids pass through the stomach to the intestine more rapidly than solids even if nutritional content is similar," says the paper. “For example, fruit juices lead to more rapid and larger changes in serum [blood] levels of glucose and insulin than whole fruits." The study also points to evidence that some kinds of fruit have a beneficial effect for health. Berries and grapes, for instance, have compounds called anthocyanins which have been found to lower the risk of heart attacks. But, say the authors, how or
even whether this also applies to diabetes risks is for now unclear. The investigation looked at data from the Nurses’ Health Study, which ran from 19842008; the Nurses’ Health Study II (1991-2009); and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2008). Ten kinds of fruit were used in the questionnaire: grapes or raisins; peach, plums or apricots; prunes; bananas; cantaloupe melon; apples or pears; oranges; grapefruit; strawberries; and blueberries. The fruit juices identified in the questionnaire were apple, orange, grapefruit and “other." AFP

hree founders of Femen said Saturday they had left Ukraine in fear for their lives after police discovered weapons in their Kiev offices that the feminist group says were planted. Alexandra Shevchenko, Anna Hutsol and Yana Zhdanova “have fled Ukraine fearing for their lives and for their liberty” and would “continue their activities in Europe”, said a statement on the group's website. The three women decided to leave after Ukrainian police called them in for questioning on Friday, the statement said. The group, known for its topless political protests, is fac-
ing a criminal investigation after police said they confiscated a TT handgun and a grenade from its offices in central Kiev on Tuesday. Hutsol insisted the group did not have any weapons and suggested they could have been planted in the office while the activists were away. The Ukrainian authorities
have had Femen in their sights for some time. On Wednesday the group said it was moving out of its Kiev offices, alleging official wiretapping. Femen, which was founded in Ukraine but now has its headquarters in Paris, has become well-known in Ukraine and abroad, where members bare their breasts to protest discrimination against women and other rights violations. The group has said Hutsol and other activists were beaten by special services last month in an attempt by the government to pressure them to halt their protests, which target figures including Russian President Vladimir Putin. ollywood actresses are readily flaunting a bikini on the big screen, but curvaceous actress Parineeti Chopra says she is overweight to flaunt the two-piece garment. Asked if she will be okay wearing a bikini for a film, she said: “If I have a hot body, then why not? But right now I don’t have the right body. I am still overweight, so there’s no way I can wear a bikini.” As such, the vivacious actress doesn’t have any limitations or restrictions as an artist. “I don’t want to restrict myself. I don’t know how long will I act, or may be the audience will get bored of me and then I will not be acting... so (as long as I am in showbiz), I don’t want to restrict myself,” she said. Parineeti admits that most actresses justify bold scenes by saying “it’s the demand of the script”. But she says it is actually so. “In Shuddh Desi Romance, Sushant (Singh Rajput) has to be physically close with (characters played by) Vaani Kapoor and me for the conflict to happen. If a director says that let’s put some kissing scenes for publicity, I will never do that. It’s ridiculus,” she added. Busy with the promotions of Shuddh Desi Romance, which releases September 6, Parineeti guarantees that the movie is “entertaining”. The film is directed by Maneesh Sharma. IANS

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

INDYCAR
LOCAL SPORT
Pagenaud claims Baltimore title BALTIMORE: Simon Pagenaud of France won his second career IndyCar race, coming out on top Sunday in a crash-marred Grand Prix of Baltimore. Pagenaud outlasted American Josef Newgarden, his relatively clean performance on the 2.04-mile (3.3km) circuit paying off in a race that saw six fullcourse cautions and almost every car sustaining some damage. “The car was fantastic,” said Pagenaud, the Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports driver who added a second IndyCar title to the one he won in Detroit in June. “We got very lucky on the restarts. I pushed hard on the last restart against Marco (Andretti) and TK (Tony Kanaan). Awesome job for the HP team. They’ve been awesome this weekend and I guess it’s good for the championship.” Pagenaud crossed the finish line in the 75-lap race 4.1sec in front Newgarden, the 2011 Indy Lights champion who notched his first IndyCar podium finish.
“I really wanted to give Simon a run for his money,” Newgarden said. “I think we had the pace for him, we just had no brakes left.” France’s Sebastien Bourdais, who started 22nd and led 19 laps, finished third, while England’s Justin Wilson overcame mechanical issues to finish fourth. Switzerland’s Simona De Silvestro celebrated her 25th birthday with a fifth-placed finish. New Zealand’s Scott Dixon started on pole but exited on the 53rd lap after a brush with Australian Will Power on a restart. That meant Helio Castroneves, who went into the race 38 points ahead of Dixon atop the standings, gained more ground with his ninth-place finish. Brazil’s Castroneves now tops the standings with 501 points, 49 in front of Dixon with three races remaining. Pagenaud moved into third in the standings on 431 points. AFP

NZ VS INDIA
New Zealand confirms trimmed tour WELLINGTON: New Zealand Cricket on Monday announced a shortened schedule for its home series against India after reports that the visitors wanted to keep the tour as brief as possible. NZC said India would play two Tests and five ODIs against the Black Caps between January 19 and February 18, in the first tour by the world number two Test nation since 2009. Under the ICC’s Future Tours Programme, the trip was supposed to include three Tests, five ODIs and one T20 in February and March. However, India were reportedly keen to curtail the visit so they can participate in the Asia Cup, which begins in late February. NZC chief executive David White admitted last month that discussions with the BCCI over the tour “have taken longer than we hoped". He did not address the shortened itinerary in a brief statement issued Monday, saying only: “It’s brilliant that the Black Caps will be playing five ODIs against the world’s top one-day side given the proximity of Cricket World Cup in 2015.”
SAFEWAY CLASSIC
Pettersen clinches title
PORTLAND: Suzann Pettersen shook off an early double-bogey to post a final-round 67 and win the LPGA Safeway Classic by two strokes as overnight leader Tseng Ya-ni collapsed. Pettersen finished with a 20under par total of 268 at Edgewater Country Club on Sunday, adding a second Safeway Classic crown to the one she won in 2011 when the tournament was held at Pumpkin Ridge. “Very glad to pull this one off," said Pettersen, who notched the 12th LPGA title of her career and her second in 2013. American Stacy Lewis fired a four-under par 68 on Sunday to finish second on 18-under 270, completing all four rounds without a bogey. “You would think if you went bogey-free you would win the golf tournament," Lewis said. “It’s just you’re making so many birdies out here and everybody is scoring so low, unfortunately that’s kind of the way it is." Former world number one Tseng, who took a three-shot lead into the final round, saw her bid to end a 17-month victory drought evaporate early with a double-bogey at the par-three second hole followed by bogeys at the third and fourth. The Taiwanese star, who reigned as number one for 109
straight weeks, finished with a six-over 78 to share ninth place on 276. She remains in search of her first LPGA title since March of 2012. Pettersen also made a double-bogey five at the second, but she responded with eight birdies in the next 11 holes — including four birdies in a row starting at the fifth.
Pettersen finished with a 20-under par total of 268, adding a second Safeway Classic crown to the one she had won in 2011. “I decided before I went out just not have too many reactions, good or bad," said Pettersen, part of the European Solheim Cup team that earned their first-ever victory on US soil with a triumph over the Americans in Colorado in August. “I knew there were birdies out there if you really get it going. I just tried to put it behind me. It was a disaster of a hole, 150 yards." World number three Pettersen, who won the LPGA Lotte Championship in Hawaii in April, became the fourth play-

Sergio Garcia stretches lead NORTON: Sergio Garcia fired a six-under par 65 on Sunday to stretch his lead over Sweden’s Henrik Stenson to two strokes after three rounds of the $8 million Deutsche Bank Championship. The Spaniard, who took a one-stroke lead over Stenson into the third round, posted five of his seven birdies on the back nine at TPC Boston and had just one bogey to remain atop the leaderboard with a 19under par total of 194. “I was very happy with it," Garcia said. “It wasn’t as easy as maybe it looked. I played very nicely, hit a lot of good iron shots ... hit some really good putts." Stenson carded a 66 for 196 and was one stroke in front of Canadian Graham DeLaet and US veteran Steve Stricker. DeLaet bounced back from an opening bogey with a vengeance, firing 10 birdies in a nine-under 62. Stricker — who nearly holed his tee shot at the parthree eighth hole — joined the Canadian on 197 with an eagle on the par-five 18th. DeLaet was delighted with his round, but said he benefitted from players being allowed to lift, clean and place the ball in
the fairway, the rule invoked on the sodden course after a lengthy rain delay. In order to get the round completed, and stay on track for a Monday finish on the US Labor Day holiday, officials scrapped the partial scores of players who teed off before the delay, then redrew the groups and sent players off from the first and 10th tees. World number one Tiger Woods couldn’t take advantage of the rainsoftened course, firing a one-over 72. His four bogeys of the day included three in a row starting at the 10th hole and he made the last of his three birdies of the day at the par-three 16th. “I didn’t play very well today," said Woods, who was six-under
Championship in a playoff, finished third, carding a 69 for 271. US veteran Cristie Kerr carded a second straight 69 for sole possession of fourth place on 272, AND Germany’s Caroline Masson boosted her bid for LPGA rookie of the year honors with a fifth-place finish after a 70 for 273. AFP
through 54 holes. “I didn’t hit it well and didn’t make anything." Woods looked grim as he walked off the 18th green, having hit just seven of 14 fairways and 12 greens in regulation. “The course is gettable, that’s for sure," Woods said. “You could be very aggressive and not have to worry about anything. Just one of those days I had a bad day at the wrong time." Woods came into the second of four events in the US PGA Tour playoffs leading the playoff standings. Ireland scent blood DUBLIN: Ireland hope to take advantage of a weakened England side when the teams meet on Tuesday in a one-off one-day international match at Malahide. With only four survivors from England’s last 50-over contest, the Champions Trophy final against India in June, Ireland will scent another upset and a repeat of their famous victory in Bangalore at the 2011 World Cup. It will be a full-strength Ireland line-up, although they are likely to face two compatriots among the opposition. One is a certainty because Eoin Morgan has been named as captain, in place of the rested Alistair Cook, for the second successive time against his native country and Boyd Rankin is expected to make his ODI debut as well. To date, Rankin has played only two Twenty20 games in the Three Lions shirt after quitting the Ireland team last year to pursue his ambition of playing Test cricket for England.

Williams defeated US 15th seed Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-1 to reach the US Open quarter-finals, winning eight of the last nine game in avenging a loss that ousted her from the 2013 Australian Open. “It definitely felt like a bigger match because Sloane is such a great player, but I had to stay focused in the moment," Williams said. “I just tried the whole time to do what I wanted to, stay calm and stay relaxed." Djokovic opposes Syria military action NEW YORK: Novak Djokovic (in pic), the world’s top tennis player who grew up in Belgrade as NATO air strikes blasted the Serbian capital in 1999, hit out Sunday at US plans to take military action against Syria. Serb star Djokovic as well as former women’s number one Ana Ivanovic both vividly recall sheltering from the attacks that were launched against the rule of Serb hardman leader Slobodan Milosevic. Djokovic said that any attack against Syria would be ill-advised and counter-productive. “I’m totally against any kind of weapon, any kind of air strike, missile attack. I’m totally against anything that is destructive because I had this personal experience, I know it cannot bring any good to anybody," said Djokovic. “Those particular times that me and my fellow countrymen and colleagues from Serbia have been through is a period of life that we don’t wish anybody to experience. The war is the worst thing in life for h u m a n i t y. Nobody really wins." AFP
Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-0, and Russian 24th seed Ekaterina Makarova, who upset Polish third seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-4.
NEW YORK: India’s Leander Paes and Sania Mirza entered the quarterfinals of their respective categories in the US Open at the Flushing Meadows Sunday. While the veteran Paes won his men’s doubles tie with Czech partner Radek Stepanek, Sania advanced with China’s Jie Zheng in women’s doubles. Seeded fourth, Paes and Stepanek won 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 against French 14th seeds Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut in two hours and 12 minutes on Court 17. Elsewhere, Sania and Jie Zheng upset Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke 6-2, 6-3. IANS
Li, the 2011 French Open champion, matched her best US Open result by reaching the last eight. “Maybe today was the best match of my whole life," Li said,
saying that her strategy against Makarova would be to “Play aggressive. I wish I can play the same level like today." Li improved to 5-4 against Jankovic, motivated by the sting of a loss in their most recent match in a round-of-16 affair last May in Rome. “Last time I lost to her in Rome I was feeling so sad," Li said. “I was feeling I played so good. I said, ‘You have to remember how you felt after Rome and not have that feeling any more.'" Suarez Navarro hit 45 winners and took advantage of 50 unforced errors by Kerber to rally for the victory after two hours and 41 minutes. Radwanska dropped the last eight games and was ousted in the fourth round at the US Open for the fourth time, having never reached the quarter-finals. “I want to know as well what happened," Radwanska said. Tim Smyczek was America’s last hope of avoiding the embarrassment of not having a man in the fourth round of the country’s own Grand Slam. Grand Slam for the first time in the Open era. But Spain’s Marcel Granollers delivered the executioner’s blow when he beat 109th-ranked Smyczek 64, 4-6, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the last 16 and condemn the US to humiliation in a sport they once dominated. In an historic flop, no US man reached the fourth round of any of the year’s four majors. “I really wanted to win for you guys," said Smyczek. “I just came up a little short."

The US Open wipeout came on the heels of no US man reaching the third round at Wimbledon for the first time since 1912 and it leaves Andy Roddick as their most recent Grand Slam champion when he won in New York in 2003. Djokovic brushed aside world number 95 Joao Sousa, the first Portuguese man to make the third round, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 to make the last 16. Third-seeded defending champion
Murray eased past Germany’s world number 49 Florian Mayer, 7-6 (7/2), 62, 6-2 while 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt maintained his dream run with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 win over Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy. Djokovic, the 2011 champion and bidding to reach the final for a fourth year in succession, next faces Granollers, who he has beaten in their only previous meeting, for a place in the quarter-finals.

MADRID: A first-half hat-trick by Lionel Messi ensured Barcelona maintained their 100% start to he La Liga season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Valencia as Real Madrid also made it three wins from three games on Sunday. Messi had looked far from his best in Barca’s Super Cup victory over Atletico Madrid in midweek, but looked more like his old self as he put Barca 2-0 up inside 39 minutes and was then brilliantly set up by Neymar to complete his hat-trick. However, Valencia were amazingly back in the game by half-time as Helder Postiga struck twice in first-half stoppage time. Barca then passed up a host of chances to put the game to bed in the second-half and were nearly punished when Jonas struck the post four minutes from time. “It is a difficult place to come for the players they have, the atmosphere and the intensity," Andres Iniesta told Canal Plus afterwards. “We practically dominated the first-half for 44 minutes, were winning 3-0 and then we let them back into it. “It is a question of improving. We are still at the start of the

season and it is logical that the team has more to give." Neymar had already had a goal ruled out for offside when Cesc Fabregas sprung Valencia’s high line with a fine through ball on 10 minutes and Messi evaded challenge from Adil Rami and Diego Alves to bundle home from close range. Victor Valdes was then forced into a fine save to deny Dorlan Pabon levelling on his
debut for Los Che. But just when it appeared Valencia were in control of the game, Barca struck twice in two minutes. Firstly, Sergio Busquets robbed the ball in midfield to allow Fabregas to set Messi free again to roll into the far corner. And then a wonderful piece of individual skill from Neymar teed-up the Argentine to side foot home his 23rd hat-trick for the Catalans.
Valencia responded wonderfully though and were back in the game before half-time thanks to Postiga’s double. The Portuguese firstly produced a stunning overhead kick to turn Joao Pereira’s cross into the top corner. And moments later the former Spurs man rose highest to flick home Ever Banega’s corner. The frantic pace continued after the break as Messi forced Alves into a stunning save from the edge of the area before Pedro somehow managed to head wide from Iniesta’s cross from point-blank range. Messi was next to let Valencia off the hook as he unbelievably pulled his shot wide after more great work from Neymar and Jordi Alba down the left and then fired straight at Alves when clean through on goal. And the champions were nearly made to pay for their profligacy as Jonas’ curling effort from the edge of the area was brilliantly turned onto the post by Valdes. Earlier, Real Madrid continued their unblemished start under new manager Carlo Ancelotti with a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu. AFP

Wenger takes heart as Arsenal sink Spurs STEVEN GRIFFITHS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal’s 1-0 win over north London rivals Tottenham proves they can thrive without any bigmoney signings. Wenger has endured a frustrating transfer window marred by his failure to fulfil the Arsenal board’s promise to finally splash the cash after eight years without a trophy. The Gunners boss missed out on Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Luiz Gustavo and was subjected to vitriolic abuse from Arsenal fans after his team’s opening day defeat at home to Aston Villa. With the transfer window due to close at 2200GMT on Monday, Wenger concedes he may have to
go through the first half of the season with free transfers Mathieu Flamini and Yaya Sanogo as his only signings. But if that is the case, he takes heart from the way his side outplayed Tottenham, who included five of the seven players signed at a cost of over £100 million to off-set the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. “It was a convincing win overall," Wenger said. “It was our fourth game in two weeks and I knew we could suffer a bit at the end through tiredness. “But we showed aspects of our game, commitment, desire and defending, that people don’t expect to see from us. “This team has lost one game since March in all competitions
and you don’t do that with average spirit. “I’m not against spending money but I only want to add super quality to our squad. “Tottenham got a lot of money for Bale. They have to invest it. I can understand that. The need is different for us." AFP Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger gestures during the English Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur at in London Sunday. AFP/GLYN KIRK
Bale set for Real unveiling KIERAN CANNING Agence France-Presse MADRID: Gareth Bale will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Monday after his prolonged transfer from Tottenham Hotspur was finally completed for an unconfirmed world record fee late Sunday. The Welshman has agreed a six-year deal believed to be worth 10 million euros net a year and will be presented to the media and the club’s fans after undergoing a medical in the Spanish capital. Widespread reports in England have suggested that the move will make Bale the world’s most expensive player with Real set to pay 101 million euros for his services. However, media in Spain insisted that Real will only pay 91 million euros, three million less than Los Blancos paid for Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2009. “I would like to thank everyone at the Club, the Chairman, Board, staff, coaches and players - and most of all the fantastic fans who I hope will understand this amazing career opportunity," Bale said in a statement on the Spurs website. “I am not sure there is ever a good time to leave a club where I felt settled and was playing the best football of my career to date. I know many players talk of their desire to join the club of their boyhood dreams, but I can honestly say, this is my dream come true. “Tottenham will always be in my heart and I’m sure that this season will be a successful one for them. I am now looking forward to the next exciting chapter in my life, playing football for Real Madrid." Bale was coveted by the Spanish giants following a series of amazing performances for Tottenham last season that landed him both the Premier League players and football writers’ player of the year.
