Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The demand for referendum on Hyderabad in the event of bifurcation of the State has stirred up the State politics. While a section of the political leaders in the Congress agrees to it, the majority opposed it, saying it will only hasten the cessation rather than preventing it. The first salvo on this issue was fired by senior Congress leader and MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy, who proposed that a referendum to know the City’s mind, where it wants to go in case of division of the State, be conducted. Some say it is not a bad idea but it should be conducted long before any decision on Telangana is taken or else it would have the opposite effect. But many oppose it. Though authorities declined to speculate on why Snowden withdrew his asylum request, it seems likely he was deterred by Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement that approval would be conditioned on the applicant's willingness to forgo making any further revelations about the US government. A number of countries, including Spain, Poland, Norway, Ireland, India and Brazil, said Tuesday they would not consider Snowden's asylum bid. On the other hand, there seems to be a gag on main opposition TDP leaders. The party sources informed Postnoon that its president N Chandrababu Naidu directed all the party leaders not to respond on the controversial issue. Postnoon’s attempts to reach out to scores of TDP leaders went in vain. While leaders like MLA P Keshav and KE Krishnamurthy did not respond to the phone calls of this correspondent, TDP Mahila Morcha president Shoba Hymavathi declined to comment on the issue by citing she was busy with Naidu’s programme in Vizag. Political circles say the TDP was compelled to consent to Telangana state under duress. It sincerely wants a united Andhra Pradesh but political compulsions prevent it from expressing too much on T-state.

MONTESSORI EDUCATION

Moulding model citizens Here’s a school that believes in feeling the tender mind and filling it rather than learning by rote or thrusting things from the top. A child has far more imagination than an adult is what the faulty at Taraporewala believe. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Using “The secret of good teaching is to regard the child’s intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination,” said Dr Maria Montessori. These days, where most of the schools limit themselves to text book knowledge and the curriculum, here is one school which believes that stress-free education will kindle in every child, the love for learning and acquiring knowledge. The Taraporewalla Montessori at Film Nagar in Jubilee Hills believes in educating children by focusing on understanding rather than memorising material. A pioneer in Montessori education, Taraporewalla’s Montessori was founded by KE Taraporewalla who had trained under Dr Maria Montessori in 1939. Her deep love for helping children enabled her to start the Montessori school in Hyderabad in 1953. Today the Jubilee Hills branch is being taken forward by Rohini Reddy.

Some are under the misconception that Montessori school means a pre-primary school, but Taraporewalla Montessori is the first Montessori school in Hyderabad which will be taken up to the X grade with the ICSE syllabus. Taraporewalla’s Montessori in Jubilee Hills, admits children at 1 ½years into the toddler environment. This is a crucial time for AROUND THE

developing concentration and order. Here opportunities are created for the child to gain order, independence, concentration and coordination of movements. The material and the teaching become instrumental in developing the spoken language. The Primary school environment (2 ½ -6 years) is totally child centered and offers self-activity, total freedom within limitations, exploration and application. The Elementary and High School Programme (6-14 years) is specially designed to satisfy the child’s hunger for learning. The Montessori philosophy

is thoughtfully blended with the ICSE syllabus. The school follows the North American Montessori curriculum till grade VIII, after which the child is prepared for Boards under a stress-free environment. Math, English, Botany, Zoology and History are taught using elementary Montessori material. The presentations used for teaching are repeated till they are mastered and perfected by the child. Apart from the traditional subjects students continue to learn advanced practical life skills, art appreciation, matter

and astronomy along with the development of a scientific attitude through experiments. “At Taraporewalla’s Montessori we make sure that personal attention is given to every child. Every topic that is taught is carried out by a field trip so that the child gets a practical understanding of the subject. Our mission is to inculcate the love for life-long learning, encouraging the child to think for themselves and have the compassion for others,” says Rohini Reddy, director of the Jubilee Hills branch.

Virtual reality may help women lose weight Research shows that using virtual reality to reinforce behaviour could be effective, so experts wanted to establish whether it could be used to help people lose weight. WASHINGTON: Watching an “avatar”, or a computer-generated image, that performs weightloss actions in a virtual community might help women shed weight in the real world, says a new US study. “This pilot study showed that you don’t have to be a gamer to use virtual reality to learn some important skills for weight loss,” Xinhua quoted Melissa Napolitano, associate professor at the George Washington University,

as saying. She said the findings, published in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, suggest that “virtual reality could be a promising new tool for building healthier habits”. Previous research had shown that using virtual reality to reinforce behaviour could be effective, so the university experts wanted

to establish whether it could be used to help people lose weight. To find out, the team first conducted a survey among 128 overweight women. Most of the women had tried to lose weight during the last year and the majority had never used a virtual reality game. Despite the fact that most of these women had no experience with the concept, the researchers found that 88 per cent said they were willing to try it. Eight of the 128 women were

then chosen for the study and allowed to pick “avatars” that they thought resembled their own skin colour and shape. The participants came to the university researchers’ clinic once a week and watched a 15-minute video featuring an “avatar” demonstrating healthy weight loss behaviour. After four weeks of treatment, the women in the pilot study had lost an average of 1.6 kg, a fairly typical amount for traditional diet plans, Napolitano said. IANS

Rescue ends, relief work on

The massive 15-day effort by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to evacuate stranded people in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand has ended. DEHRADUN: The massive 15-day effort by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to evacuate stranded people in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand concluded Tuesday with the last pilgrim rescued from Badrinath. Officially, over 3,000 are still missing, but NGOs fear the figure could well be 10,000. As authorities continued their efforts to account for the missing and reach out to far-flung areas with relief material, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) vice chairman Shashidhar Reddy said the official count of the missing was over 3,000 but the NGOs’ estimate of 10,000 missing “cannot be ignored". IAF spokesperson Squardon Leader Priya Joshi said that the first phase of Operation Rahat concluded Tuesday with a group of 150 being taken out to safety from Badrinath. “It was one of the biggest heli-lift evacuation of civilians in aviation history," Joshi told IANS. State government officials said around 1.1 lakh people stranded by flashfloods and landslides were evacuated by personnel of the army, IAF, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). They said that some labourers remain in the affected areas and would be taken out as soon as roads were restored. Officials said authorities now faced a challenging task of cremating badly decomposed bodies in Kedarnath area. AROUND THE

he NMDA put the number of villages affected by the tragedy — one of the worst to hit India in recent times — at over 2,000. Incessant rains in Uttarakhand for over three days from June 14 triggered flashfloods and landslides, leading to hundreds of deaths.

The situation was compounded by a variety of factors, including bad weather. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna Tuesday said that over 3,000 people were missing and the focus was to reach out to people stuck in far-flung regions of the state. He said that 800 people would be evacuated from Pithoragarh in choppers. Asked about a UN report putting the missing number at 11,000, Bahuguna said that the figure of 3,000 has been arrived at with help of various agencies. He said that thousands remain miss-

The NMDA put the number of villages affected by the tragedy — one of the worst to hit India in recent times — at over 2,000. Incessant rains in Uttarakhand for over three days from June 14 triggered flashfloods and landslides, leading to hundreds of deaths. Reddy admitted that supply of food to the affected villages — many of which have been washed away — posed a challenge as vast stretches of roads and bridges were not accessible. On Tuesday, 100 tonnes of rice were given to the Badrinath administration for distribution among the needy. Reddy said choppers were being used to send supplies and eight teams of the NDRF were camping in the affected areas. He said 1,025 people injured in the nature’s fury were being treated in hospitals. Of the 3,727 villages, 2,283 villages have been restored their power connectivity. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has sent a two-member team to flood-hit Uttarakhand to asses the impact of the tragedy on children. The team comprises National Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Kushal Singh and joint secretary in the ministry Vivek Joshi. The health ministry has sent 1,600 body bags to Uttarakhand as part of relief efforts. IANS

HYDERABAD: The Begumpet women’s police station has registered a case against an NRI, T Harish Reddy, in connection with domestic violence and dowry harassment against his wife, Priya. In a criminal complaint lodged with police, Priya’s father Dr B Keshav Reddy alleged that his daughter was physically and mentally tortured by her husband who works in the US and later forcibly sent her home demanding more dowry. Harish Reddy is a resident of Secunderabad and has been working in the US for the past few years. Their marriage was conducted three years ago when, as per the father’s claims, `15 lakh in cash, 30 tolas of gold and five kg of silver were given. After this, the wife and father registered a criminal complaint against Harish. Begumpet police have summoned Harish and his parents.

FIKRI RAMADHAVI Agence France-Presse BLANG MANCUNG: Rescuers battled through landslides and blocked roads Wednesday to reach survivors from an earthquake in Indonesia’s Aceh province that has killed at least 22 people, including several children who died when a mosque collapsed. More than 200 people were also injured in Aceh’s remote, mountainous interior when the strong 6.1-magnitude quake struck Tuesday, flattening buildings and triggering landslides. The quake, which struck at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometres, has sparked panic in the natural disaster-prone region where more than 1,70,000 people were killed by the quaketriggered tsunami of 2004. In Blang Mancung village, Central Aceh district, at least six children were killed when a mosque collapsed during a Koran reading session. Subhan Sahara, head of the district’s disaster agency, previously said a further 14 children were trapped in the collapse. But on Wednesday he said had not yet found any more bodies in the rubble and were now unsure how many had been inside. “This is the biggest earthquake we’ve ever had here,” he told AFP. “People are still frightened, especially after the aftershocks last night. Nobody dared to stay at home. Everyone slept on the roads or in car parks. “The earthquake triggered many landslides. People could not get out of the area because of fallen trees and mounds of earth blocking roads.” The main hospital in the district was overwhelmed and tents had been set up in the building’s car park to treat the flood of patients, he said.

He added supplies of food and water were in short supply but rescuers had succeeded in reaching the remote area. Military, police and local government officials were trying to head to other affected areas on Wednesday by ground and in aircraft but some roads were blocked by landslips, the national disaster agency said.

The agency dispatched a helicopter from neighbouring Riau province to assist in rescue efforts, while an air force plane was also deployed to assess the damage. “So far 22 people died, 210 people were injured, and thousands of buildings and homes were damaged in the quake,” disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. The casualties were spread over the two worst-hit districts of Central Aceh and Bener Meriah, he said. Scores of people were being treated at hospitals across the region. In Bener Meriah, about 300 people camped out overnight in open spaces, such as football fields, as the area was hit by strong aftershocks, Fauzi, an official from the local disaster agency told AFP. Morsi stands firm, will not step down CAIRO: Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi vowed he would not quit despite mass protests demanding his resignation and an army ultimatum as fresh deadly violence rocked capital Cairo. In a televised address on Tuesday evening, the embattled Islamist leader said he had been freely elected to lead the troubled nation little more than a year ago and intended to stick to his task. The only alternative to respecting the constitutional legitimacy of the office was further bloodshed on the streets, he warned. Just hours after his speech, the health ministry reported that unidentified gunman had killed 16 people and wounded about 200 more after opening fire on a rally of his supporters in Cairo. Morsi’s speech came as the clock ticked down to a Wednesday deadline set by the

army for the president to meet the “people’s demands” or have a solution imposed on him. While he made no direct reference to the ultimatum in his speech, a message posted on his official Twitter account called on the army to back off. “President Morsi insists on (his) constitutional legitimacy and rejects any attempt to overstep it,” the message said. “(He) calls on the armed forces to withdraw their warning and rejects any dictates, domestic or foreign.” After Morsi’s speech, the opposition Tamarod movement, which on Sunday mobilised millions of demonstrators for what the military described as the biggest protests in Egyptian history, accused Morsi of “threatening his own people”. Morsi and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi were locked in talks on Tuesday to “discuss the current crisis,” a military source said. AFP

MOSCOW: Fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden's struggle to find a safe haven sparked a diplomatic row Wednesday after Bolivia President Evo Morales's plane was diverted to Austria over suspicions he was on board. The incident happened hours after Morales said his country would consider a request for political asylum from Snowden.

ATHENS: A letter bomb believed to have been sent by Italian radical anarchists ignited in a Greek post sorting centre on Wednesday without causing any injuries, police said. The police said the envelope contained a makeshift explosive device and was addressed to a senior Greek police officer. The bomb apparently went off by accident.

PESHAWAR: Dozens of heavily armed militants stormed a checkpoint in a northwestern Pakistani village overnight, killing at least six paramilitary police and wounding seven others, officials said Wednesday. The attack took place at Jina Kor, southeast of Peshawar. More than 50 militants attacked the checkpoint at around midnight.

SEOUL: Dozens of South Korean firms on Wednesday threatened to withdraw from a shuttered joint industrial zone in North Korea, complaining they fell victim to political bickering between the two Koreas. Representatives of the 123 South Korean companies have urged North and South Korea to open talks to revive the industrial park.

TOKYO: Japan's nuclear watchdog on Wednesday said the only two reactors currently working in the country can stay online for now, even without meeting strict new safety standards intended to prevent a repeat of the Fukushima disaster. The decision came days before the new rules come into force.

THE BAREFOOT SCHOLARS N SHIVA KUMAR

The State government spares no thought for a pair of footwear for public school students. Uniform does not include shoes in the AP scheme of things.

PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com

M

ore than 50 lakh children studying in government schools start this academic year with new uniforms and books but they must trek barefoot because footwear is not part of the deal. Unlike states like Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, the State government has not provided for footwear despite increasing instances of children, especially in rural areas, being afflicted with hook worms and resultant anaemia on account of walking barefoot to and from unhygienic school areas. In fact, it’s a problem even among school-going children in urban areas, with many children coming in with blisters, say educationalists. “It’s a need that nobody really pays attention to. Luckily this year Naandi foundation gave footwear to the girl children in our school. But nobody ever donates for the boys. Something should be done to rectify this,” feels P Parameshwari, head mistress of Government High School, Ameerpet. Veerander Rao, a lecturer from the Shah Ali Banda government school, has been witness to many of his students walking long distances barefoot in the blazing heat during the summers and wading through slush in the monsoons to reach their school. “It might seem like a non-issue to many of us. But, most of these children come from extremely poor backgrounds. They can’t afford to eat, let alone have pairs of clothing or footwear. The government should provide them at least a pair of rubber slippers along with uniforms,” he says. But despite several appeals to the government from groups like Balala Hakkula Sangham, nothing has been done so far to rectify the situation. Citing reasons of policy and budget, the matter is usually dismissed. “Every time we ask, they claim it will result in shooting up the budget. Yet, last year, they returned almost `800 crore as surplus under the Rajiv

Vidya Mission, because of not knowing how to spend the excess money. Clearly, funds are not the problem,” argues Achyuta Rao, founder of NGO Balala Hakkula Sangham. Moreover, activists maintain that the move to provide slippers would not only benefit millions of children but provide much-needed business to ailing leather enterprises in the State. Like in Tamil Nadu, where the government programme last year to distribute free footwear to children at a cost of `94.76 crore revived the State’s

small-scale leather co-operatives. “If these orders come, it will be a new lease of life for the Leather Industries Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (LIDCAP), given that unable to face competition from private industry and having no orders from the government departments, it has been a sick unit for the last decade,” explains Rao. But the State seems to need further incentives, with no sign of any such programmes in sight. “There were discussions on the need for providing footwear last year but because it required large budget changes, nothing came out of it. Without an order, we can’t do anything,” concedes Subba Reddy, District Education Officer, Hyderabad. Meanwhile, with monsoons already here, thousands of schoolgoing children are likely to be in deep water.

Better than paradise! Braving the frantic hustle bustle of the Charminar area requires some amount of will power, we agree. But, for Hyderabadis and tourists alike, this is only a minor hurdle between them and the culinary delights at Hotel Shadab. Postnoon speaks to one of the co-owners of the restaurant that has been instrumental in making the City known as the land of biryanis.

Do you have a special menu for Ramzan? Yes, we do serve delicacies relished especially during the period of Ramzan. Haleem and zuban (goat’s tongue) curry with egg are the highest selling. We also have special preparations for Sehri— such as dal rice with keema, tomato ghosht with bhajji gurda and nalliyon ki dal (bone marrow curry).

Where do owners of Shadab dine when they want something different for their palette? I can’t speak for my brothers, but I like home-made food. Simple dal roti along with a slightly spicy curry prepared at home is unmatched. Apart from that, I like Celeste, Taj Falaknuma’s Italian restaurant.

Since the restaurant is located near Charminar, does it attract a lot of tourists too? Tell us about how Shadab’s journey began? When was it conceptualised and what routine does the eatery follow? The restaurant is my father’s brainchild. When he had built it in 1990, the hotel comprised only the ground floor. Today, it boasts two floors including air conditioned dining areas. The first air conditioned dining area was built in 1995. With Shadab, my father wanted to set up a place that was affordable and at the same served quality food. He had envisioned the restaurant as a family dinner place for the people of Old City. I don’t think he had ever thought that it would go so far beyond that. As the popularity of the restaurant grew, we started expanding the staff, the menu and the place. As far as the routine goes, Shadab opens at 5am for breakfast every day. We serve khichdi khatta and keema, bhajji gurda and nahari paya for breakfast. On a regular day, the hotel is open till 1am, but during Ramzan, it stretches till 3am.

Hyderabad that serve good biryanis? What are Shadab’s hot-selling dishes? The way the biryani is prepared here is the same as everywhere else. But, we add a secret ingredient to make it even more special. Apart from Shadab, I think Café Bahar serves flavourful and appetising biryani. Our hot-selling dishes include the chocolate chicken, chicken goran, Pakistani mutton among others.

have increased immensely. How does Shadab hold its own? Shadab’s popularity has grown massively in the past six years. Even with new restaurants coming up, we don’t feel threatened as people in Hyderabad will never get sick of biryani. Moreover, we are known for our warm service; for that reason alone, people will continue to frequent this restaurant. Also, we have never compromised with our quality, irrespective of the density of the crowd that walks in daily. We have regular customers who dine at Shadab almost four times a week; they’ve been doing so for the past 10 years! Like I said, people will never get sick of good biryani.

Winnie in the spotlight again She visits hospital daily, comforts relatives and faces an army of reporters clamouring for comment — with Nelson Mandela fighting for his life, his colourful and controversial ex-wife Winnie is back in the limelight.

JAN HENNOP Agence France-Presse SOWETO: She visits hospital daily, comforts relatives and faces an army of reporters clamouring for comment — with Nelson Mandela fighting for his life, his colourful and controversial ex-wife Winnie is back in the limelight. Since the anti-apartheid hero was admitted to intensive care three weeks ago, his former spouse’s black luxury German sedan has rolled through the guarded gates each day at the heart clinic in Pretoria where Mandela lies. Just like she did 50 years ago when he was preparing for his treason trial, Winnie has been visiting the man to whom she was married for almost four decades to give moral support. While the revered leader’s current wife Graca Machel keeps a constant vigil at his bedside, it is Winnie once again who has become the public face of the Mandela family. Her increased profile has helped to polish the image of the woman who was once an outspoken thorn in the side of the racist white minority regime, but who later became tainted by scandal. “In recent years Winnie Mandela’s political star and profile has waned because of these scandals," said Professor Adam Habib, vice chancellor of Wits University in Johannesburg.

“But since Madiba fell ill, her behaviour has been exemplary and dignified," he told AFP, using the clan name by which Mandela is affectionately known. After Mandela’s daughter recently launched an angry tirade

against foreign media camped outside the hospital, comparing them to “vultures waiting when a lion has devoured a buffalo", Winnie appeared before the press pack to smooth ruffled feathers. “There may be problems here and there and some of you got carried away with the reports and talk about our father in the past tense — we are just here to thank you very much for your support," she said. She also criticised a visit by South African President Jacob Zuma and other ruling party figures in April to the home of Mandela, who was shown in television footage frail and dazed, sitting in an armchair. “I honestly cannot put in words how hurt the family was. It was one of the most insensitive things for anyone to have done," Winnie told Britain’s ITV News. “Nobody knows him better than I do and it is extremely painful to see him going through what he’s going through now," she added. “But it is God’s wish."

SAUDI ARABIA

Deadline looms over illegal workers ASSAD ABBOUD Agence France-Presse RIYADH: Illegal foreign workers in Saudi Arabia, mostly Asians, are in a race against time to take advantage of an amnesty ending Wednesday that would allow them to stay or return home without prosecution. King Abdullah announced the amnesty on April 3, granting foreign workers three months to regularise their residency or leave the oilrich Gulf monarchy to avoid being blacklisted or jailed and fined. More than 1.5 million illegal foreign workers came forward during the first two months of the amnesty, the labour ministry said. It did not say how many illegal foreign workers currently live in the kingdom, but the number is reported to be around two million. Of these, some 180,000 have left in addition to more than 200,000 unregistered workers expelled at the start of the year under new regulations to stamp out illegal immigration. Many workers are still queueing outside their embassies to obtain documents to either leave Saudi Arabia or legalise their status before Wednesday.

King Abdullah announced the amnesty on April 3, granting foreign workers three months to regularise their residency or leave the oil-rich Gulf monarchy. As in most Gulf states, foreigners in Saudi Arabia need to be sponsored by a local business to obtain entry and work permits. Foreigners desperate to work in the country are willing to pay for sponsorship, and sponsoring expatriates has become a lucrative business for some Saudis. But under the new rules workers can be employed only by their own sponsors. Sharon, a Filipina maid, stood queing in the scorching heat outside her country’s embassy in Riyadh. “I’m trying to renew my passport as I am desperate to find an employer to sponsor me and keep me in the kingdom," she said.

The Thai capital, renowned as much for its commitment to fun as it is for fiery cuisine, has embraced the odd, amusing and bizarre in a bid to lure customers through the door. In the city suburbs, staff at Ka Tron restaurant delight customers by loading cooked chickens into a catapult and firing them across a stage where they are caught on a spike by a waiter riding a unicycle. Despite the pressure that comes with live performance, their catch rate is impressive. “We have been going 26 years and we have probably fired hundreds of thousands of chickens, but we have only dropped a few hundred,” said restaurant owner Nattaset Rattanapipob. BABYLON: At ancient Babylon’s Ishtar Gate, Iraqi workers labour with a heavy saw, hammers, a chisel and crowbar to break up and remove a concrete slab that is hastening the structure’s decay. The concrete lies between the two long, towering walls of tan bricks decorated with processions of bulls and dragons that make up the more than 2,500-year-old Ishtar Gate, in what is now Iraq’s Babil province. The masonry slab was laid during the late dictator Saddam Hussein’s rule. Removing the concrete is deemed essential to preserving the Ishtar Gate at Babylon, which also served as the base for a later gate of the same name, the reassembled remains of which are now located in Germany. In the 1980s, “there was a large intervention of modern masonry inserted behind the facades” of the Ishtar Gate, in addition to “changes in the terrain behind, and resurfacing of the base of the gate with concrete,"

said Jeff Allen, field manager for the Future of Babylon project which is carrying out the work. All of those factors are accelerating “the rate of damage at the site, and decay, and what we’re doing at Ishtar Gate is trying to arrest or to slow down those mechanisms that are causing the gate to collapse," Allen said. Removing the concrete “will allow the ground to breathe and evaporate water, because at the present time... the water cannot escape, so it routes through the easiest direction to get to the AROUND THE

surface," which is through the gate itself, he said. The Future of Babylon project is a joint effort between the World Monuments Fund, which works to save key cultural heritage sites, and Iraq’s State Board of Antiquities and Heritage. The project’s original aim was to complete a management plan for Babylon, but it has been expanded to include restoration and conservation work at various parts of the site as well.

Robert Reich, a University of Colorado business professor, is providing some blunt-spoken mentoring at the Unreasonable Institute, a summer camp for capitalists who want to change the world. Facing Reich, a self-confessed serial entrepreneur, is Patrick Woodyard, whose Tennessee-based company markets shoes made by Peruvian craftspeople under the slogan “Join us, and wear change." Woodyard has told Reich that with each pair of shoes he ships, he includes information about the makers he hopes to help out of poverty. “If you tried to convince me

The UAE will invest nearly $25 billion on gas development projects, including exploring new gas fields and increasing gas output, in the next five years, Minister of Energy Suhail Al Mazrouei has said. Gas, as a clean and environmentally-friendly source of energy, will remain a major factor in the world energy supply equation and a driving force for the world economic growth, Al Mazrouei said at a summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Moscow. But, he warned that any shortage of gas supplies and increase in gas prices could negatively affect the status of gas as a reliable source of energy, prompting consumers to seek other alternative sources to meet their demand.

Iwao Hakamada worked at a soybean processing factory about two hours east of Tokyo when he was arrested and later sentenced to death for the grisly murder of his boss and the man's family. Hakamada was 30 years old. The year was 1966. The US and Soviet Union were locked in a Cold War space race, Star Trek was in its first season and Japanese factories were busy pumping out a consumer gadget that would power its economic boom: colour televisions. Nearly five decades later the Soviet Union is a relic of history, Star Trek is a global franchise, while Japan's world-beating economy is recovering from 20 years of tepid growth. And Hakamada, once a professional boxer, is a frail old man who spends his days in a solitary prison cell. The 77-year-old is believed to be the world's longest-serving condemned inmate, a man supporters say has lost his grip on reality while awaiting death by hanging - or old age — even as questions over his guilt emerge. "What I am worried about most is Iwao's health. If you put someone in jail for 47 years, it's too much to expect them to stay sane," Hakamada's now 80-year-old sister Hideko told AFP outside the Tokyo Detention House. Hakamada now refuses monthly visits from his sister and "talks nonsense", she said as rain fell outside the imposing prison in the Japanese capital, one of seven institutions across the country where condemned inmates are sent to the gallows.

uropeans may express outrage over revelations of US spying but they know perfectly well how the espionage "game" is played — everybody spies on everybody, former intelligence officials say. President Barack Obama seemed to suggest as much even as he tried to defuse the uproar over the National Security Agency's alleged eavesdropping on the European Union mission in Washington as well as embassies of other allies. "I guarantee you that in European capitals, there are people who are interested in, if not what I had for breakfast, at least what my talking points might be should I end up meeting with their leaders," Obama said during a visit to Tanzania. "That's how intelligence services operate." Former head of the NSA Michael Hayden dismissed the outcry across the Atlantic, suggesting US was not alone in snooping on its friends. "Any European who wants to go out and rend their garments with regard to international espionage should look first and find out what their own governments are doing," Hayden said. "The French spy on us, the French spy on England. The Israelis, the Russians, the UK, the US, the Chinese, all large countries with serious intelligence services are always spying on the govern-

ments of other countries," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP. But one European source, who asked not to be named, said anger among Western allies was understandable given the "mass" scale of the US electronic surveillance, revealed in recent weeks by intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor. "Hypocrisy is part of the game." For James Lewis, a former senior US official and an expert on cyber security, some of the criticisms "ring a little hollow" because "the big European countries do things that are very similar to this." Saying one thing publicly about spying and approving something else in secret is a longstanding tradition, as "hypocrisy is part of the game," said John Scheuer, a former CIA officer now at Georgetown University. Scheuer was involved in a program running secret prisons for terror suspects after the September 11 attacks, and he said the CIA shared information with "European partners" that was gathered from harsh interrogations of detainees. "But whenever it became public, they were shocked and appalled and they condemned us for doing it," Scheuer said. "And that's the way the game works." The former CIA officer said Washington could always turn the tables on its partners if it needed to. "We always have in our pocket in the United States the knowledge of who is spying

against us and it's always possible that if someone in Europe or Europe pushes us too far, the president will say 'OK, here's the evidence that X country in Europe is collecting against America," he said. In the world of espionage, spying among allies is quietly accepted but there are some methods that would never be considered, like trying to shape an election in Europe, former intelligence officials said. The only genuine red lines on spying on friends apply to the major English-speaking countries, the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, which operate under the "five eyes" agreement on intelligence gathering. The spying partners ran into a hail of criticism in the 1990s when their "Echelon" electronic

surveillance program was exposed. Among US allies, France and Israel are suspected in particularly of engaging in sophisticated cyber espionage for economic gain. A National Intelligence Estimate from all 16 US spy agencies recently concluded that China ranked first in economic espionage against American companies, with France, Israel and Russia in second place. "I would look at that if I was either an American, a Belgian or a Brit, my government would be kind of negligent if they were not collecting intelligence that would assist our economy," Scheuer said. As for US spying on the EU mission, it was unnecessary as any information could be obtained through ordinary means, said Lewis of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

ome people don’t know when matters slip out of hand. Mohammed Morsi is one of that sort. His country, Egypt is in uproar that he step down, as the nation of the pharaohs trusts him no more and thinks he and the party he represents, the Islamic Brotherhood, are out to subvert the essence of Egypt, which had been more or less secular. It may seem too early to judge him, given that he has been in power for only a year, but the people who he claims to have given him the presidency have had enough. Most of the protesters who are on the streets risking their necks agree that Morsi has done nothing, and if has done something it was damage and that they have had enough. The fact is the people who elected him have lost faith in him. Ever since his inauguration, he has done something or the other to trigger distrust in citizens about his intentions. Remember the time when he tried to assume powers which would include immunity from institutions that could check him? Twenty-three have died on the streets in clashes and more will die if Morsi does not listen to the voice of reason. If it is not for the people, why must he protect his legitimacy to stay in power?

Bollywood is now abuzz with news on the revival of the oh-so-romantic film Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi. While the actor’s spot has already been claimed by Emraan Hashmi, we look at some actresses who could play the female lead.

he charmed us all with her bright and perky performance in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. Her spontaneous and effortless acting is what gives her an added boost. She does not have to try too hard to portray the innocent girl-next-door. Though Pooja’s character is not of a girl-a-next-door, Genelia does have the ability to display the spunk and innocence of the character.

S

he has a petite frame, is the daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and has already played the spritely, effervescent girl in her debut movie Student of the Year. She has got the brat part correctly with her role as Shanaya Singhania in SOTY where designer brands, money and comfort are all that matter to her. She is naive and impulsive and so is Pooja Dharamchand in DHKMN. Apart from the age factor between the lead actor and her, this role should be right up her alley.

highly unlikely choice for most. Her height could be a major deterrent, but that said and done, a pairing with Emraan Hashmi would be interesting. Aisha demonstrated how well she could play the brat, I Hate Luv Storys showed how feminine she can be and films like Delhi 6 and Players show that she can be otherwise as well. However, her assertiveness and outspokenness could be her trump card in the industry.

Asin Thottumkal

Shraddha Kapoor

he is the daughter of Shakti Kapoor. Though she began her career with few unnoticeable films like Teen Patti and Luv ka the End, her latest film Aashiqui 2 is what got her noticed. In fact, it even managed to enter the `100cr club. She had been playing youthful and college-centric roles at the beginning of her career and with her latest, Kapoor wows the audience with her emotional avataar. As Pooja, she could probably use her youthfulness and exuberance to complete the role efficiently.

Technology iWATCH With Apple filing an iWatch trademark application in Japan, the days of wearable computing, seen as the next frontier in consumer electronics, might be right around the corner.

FIGHTING BACK A large coalition of civil rights and privacy groups and potentially thousands of websites will stage protests on the Fourth of July to protest surveillance programs at the US National Security Agency. As part of the Restore the Fourth campaign, many website members of the 30,000-member Internet Defense League plan to display a protest of NSA surveillance and the text of the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution. Websites participating include Reddit, where Restore the Fourth originated, WordPress, 4chan, Mozilla, Fark, and Cheezburger.com. Organisers are also planning live protests in dozens of US cities.

UBISOFT HACKED

Sign of things to come? A

pple has filed a trademark application for an “iWatch” in Japan, fuelling speculation the US tech giant is preparing to introduce a wearable computing device to go up against products on stream from Google and Samsung. The firm has long been rumoured to be working on introducing an “iWatch”, in a move that would represent the biggest gadget launch by the firm since the iPad mini last year. The trademark application was filed on June 3, according to the Patent Office. “The application is under examination process for approval, which in general takes some four to five months,” a Patent Office official said. No one from Apple in Tokyo was immediately available to comment on the application. Wearable computing, including Google’s Glass eyewear, is widely seen as the next frontier in consumer electronics, following smartphones. Competition in the “smart-

watch” market is already heating up, with Google, Microsoft and Samsung Electronics rushing to develop their own watchtype computing devices. Sony last week unveiled the latest version of its SmartWatch, which links with smartphones to receive alerts about phone calls, emails and updates from social networks, as well as including a music function. Industry watcher ABI Research estimates that 1.2 million smartwatches will be sold globally this year. “Apple’s iWatch is likely to be a touchstone of the future of the company,” said Hiroshi Sakai, chief economist with SMBC Friend Research Center. “Apple had led the industry with lifestyle changing products,” Sakai said. “The key to another success for the company is whether it can offer another new lifestyle with iWatch or other products so that it can achieve a de facto standard in the post-smartphone world.” Apple shares tumbled last week after an analyst said it was

going to slash production of its iPhone. The company’s stock price has been on a downward trend since September when shares topped $700. A research note from the brokerage firm Jefferies said Apple is likely to cut production plans for the iPhone to between 25 and 30 million in the third quarter, down from between 40 and 45 million. It went on to

pple is not the only one working on smartwatches right now, but their position of being technology innovator won’t make its way to iWatch. A bunch of teenagers from Delhi have already come up with a smartwatch that can not only work with your smartphone but also work as a full device on its own. Powered by Android 2.2, it can make and receive calls while also supporting some of the apps from Google Play.

predict that Apple would also trim production in the fourth quarter to between 50 and 55 million from 60 to 65 million. Apple’s profit in the first three months of this year dipped for the first time in nearly a decade despite a rise in revenue from the same period a year earlier. A separate note from Trip Chowdhry at Global Equities Research said the lower stock price and eroding market share are creating a vicious circle for Apple, prompting some employees to jump ship. Chowdhry said the California-based firm’s move to pay a dividend with a $17 billion bond sale -- the biggest issuance of corporate debt ever - in an effort to boost its share price, appears to have backfired. Analysts say the rapid spread of Google’s Android mobile operating system is biting into Apple’s share of the smartphone market, with recent surveys showing it was used on about 75 percent of the gadgets sold globally in the first quarter of 2013. Ubisoft announced today that some of their online services were hacked and added that the hackers were not able to gain access to credit/debit card information of gamers. The passwords accessed were not stored in clear text and were encrypted, but there is still a chance of the encryption being broken. The company has recommended that everyone with a Ubisoft account changes their password. If you use the same password for any other service it would be advisable to change your passwords there too.

BitTorrent turns 12 BitTorrent turns 12 years old today. However when the torrent client first launched in 2001, the response wasn’t exactly overwhelming. Despite this, BitTorrent was born, and in the weeks and months that followed more people started to become aware of its potential. The music-sharing community Etree was one of the first places where its full capacity was tested in the wild and hundreds of websites quickly followed, most notably The Pirate Bay. Over the years many artists have learned that BitTorrent is a great way to share their work with the public, and companies such as Facebook and Twitter have started to use it too.

Honestly, I’m thrilled that my son (Ram Charan) has got a chance to be a part of an action thriller like Yevadu. Films like these are rare to find and after watching the rushes, I was on cloud nine. Vamshi Paidipally and his entire team have done a great job. Although Allu Arjun has done a cameo, the audience will remember him throughout the film. There are lots of things which I want to talk about, but all I can say is that audience will get as excited as I am after watching the film. After Magadheera, I’m confident that Yevadu will be the film which will take Ram Charan to the next level,” Chiranjeevi said, while speaking at the event. Recalling his first interaction with Vamsi Paidipally, Ram Charan said, “He came to me, along with writer Vakkantham Vamsi, two years ago while I was shooting for Raccha. I was stunned after listening to the story and immediately agreed to be part of the film. All of us have put in a lot of effort into the film and I’m sure the audience will also feel the same thing.” Devi Sri Prasad has scored the music. KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

TOUR DE FRANCE

Orica-GreenEdge triumph again NICE: Orica-GreenEdge grabbed the spotlight for the second consecutive day at the Tour de France after dominating Tuesday’s fourth stage 25km team time trial which gave Simon Gerrans the yellow jersey. The Australian outfit, which made its race debut last year, picked up their first Tour de France stage win thanks to Gerrans when he pipped Peter Sagan at the finish line in Calvi on Monday. Orica’s triumphant ride over a mainly flat course around Nice pushed Omega-Pharma off the virtual leaderboard by just one second. Gerrans now leads teammate Daryl Impey by one second in the general classification ahead of Wednesday’s fifth stage. “We weren’t the favourites for this course but we went out and gave it everything we had,” said Gerrans.

In response, Pirelli said they would make the rear tyres’ internal belt with the high-strength synthetic fibre Kevlar instead of the usual steel to reduce temperatures and the risk of punctures. Formula One teams, Pirelli and motorsport’s world governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), will meet to discuss the matter at

ON CALM WATERS

NICE: Ted King’s Tour de France debut ended in controversial fashion Tuesday after he missed the time cut-off for the stage four team time trial by seven seconds. King, an American who rides for Cannondale, dislocated his shoulder when he was one of several riders caught up in the crash which marred the opening stage of the race on Saturday. After battling through two further stages on the French island of Corsica, King saddled up for stage four, fearful of having to adapt his body to the unforgiving position required by his aerodynamic time trial bike. The pain was so excruciating he decided to race with a normal road bike, but he began trailing his teammates early in the 25km race against the clock.

“On this team we’re all good friends and we work hard to help each other. “It’s unbelievable. It’s been a dream two days for us. It really doesn’t get any better than this.” Despite having no yellow jersey contender in their nine-man team Orica-GreenEdge were overjoyed at a prestigious collective win which means Gerrans will wear yellow into Wednesday’s stage from Cagnessur-Mer to Marseille. With no time bonuses on offer at the end of each day’s stage, the former Australian champion could also realistically keep the race lead until the start of two Pyrenean stages beginning Saturday. Omega-Pharma had set the early pace in a time of 25min 57sec thanks in large part to the talents of Germany’s world champion in the discipline, Tony Martin. AFP

WIMBLEDON

Flipkens reaches semifinals Kirsten Flipkens reached her first Wimbledon semifinal as she clinched a surprise win over Petra Kvitova. STEVEN GRIFFITHS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Kirsten Flipkens reached her first Wimbledon semi-final as the Belgian 20th seed clinched a surprise 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over former champion Petra Kvitova on Tuesday. The 27-year-old, a close friend of fellow Belgian and former Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters, wore down the more powerful Kvitova in two hours and five minutes of attritional tennis under the Centre Court roof. and Flipkens took full advantage to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final, against 2007 runner-up Marion Bartoli of France on Thursday. Flipkens is the first Belgian to make the last four at Wimbledon since Justine Henin in 2007, an achievement she would have found impossible to imagine just 12 months ago. This time last year the 2003 junior Wimbledon champion was ranked a lowly 262nd in the world after blood clots in her left ankle forced her to take several months off, but she has recovered from that setback in remarkable fashion. “It’s amazing, it’s more than a dream come true to be in the semi-final of a Grand Slam, it’s ridiculous,” Flipkens said. “Last year I didn’t even get into the qualifying of Wimbledon. “I still cannot believe it. I was so calm on the court, I had nothing to lose and I just went for my shots. “Kim (Clijsters) was one of the few people last year really

Tomic troubles aid Marion’s dream LONDON: What began as a late-night scuffle between the father of Australian star Bernard Tomic and his son’s hitting partner outside a Madrid hotel, could end with Marion Bartoli winning the Wimbledon title. When John Tomic was accused of attacking Thomas Drouet in the Spanish capital in May, the French coach left the Australian’s camp and began working with Bartoli alongside her father, and full-time

coach, Walter. But Bartoli has opted to compete at Wimbledon, where she was runner-up to Venus Williams in 2007, without her father at her side, preferring instead the input of 2006 Wimbledon champion and compatriot, Amelie Mauresmo and Drouet. “I have known her since we were young but she always surprises me with her mental qualities every day, her seriousness, her professionalism,” said Drouet. AFP

Net it be for born-again Li Na LONDON: Li Na confessed she is a convert to serve-andvolley tennis and has vowed to take her new-found skills at the net with her into the US hard court season. The Chinese number one tried out the tactics at Wimbledon and though it did not get her into the semi-finals, the 31-year-old is keen to prove she can mix it with the best of them in the dying art. Na is going to take a month off recuperating after her Wimbledon exploits, fresh-

ening up to tackle the run-up ahead of the US Open, which gets under way on August 26. Li was beaten by Agnieszka Radwanska in an epic quarter-final tussle on Tuesday between the highest seeds left standing at Wimbledon. The Polish fourth seed, beaten by Serena Williams in last year’s final, defeated the sixth seed 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-2 in a closelyfought contest on Centre Court. AFP

believing in me. “I am so happy you cannot imagine. I don’t even have tears.” The diminutive 27-yearold, who had failed to get past the third round in five previous Wimbledon appearances, hadn’t dropped a set en route to the last eight and she never looked intimidated by Kvitova’s hardhitting style. Kvitova landed the first break for a 3-2 lead and recovered from dropping her serve in the next game to break again to

move 4-3 ahead. Given the chance to serve out the set, Kvitova seemed wracked with nerves and had to save four break points before finally converting her third set point. But Flipkens, a striking figure in her tinted prescription sunglasses and white bandana, responded superbly. The Belgian cleverly moved Kvitova out of position with her accurate ground-strokes and broke in the sixth game to take the second set. AFP

Booed Bartoli in round of last four

LONDON: French 15th seed Marion Bartoli reached the Wimbledon semi-finals on Tuesday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Sloane Stephens, the 17th-seeded American, despite being booed by the All England Club crowd. Bartoli, the 2007 Wimbledon runner-up to Venus Williams, will face Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens, who beat 2011 champion Petra Kvitova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 for a place in the final. But she fell foul of the fans on the 11,000-seater Court One bowl when she demanded that play be stopped when she was leading 54, 40-40 with Stephens serving as

Radwanska edges Li in epic match LONDON: Agnieszka Radwanska downed China’s Li Na in an epic Wimbledon quarterfinal on Tuesday between the highest seeds left standing. The Polish fourth seed defeated the sixth seed 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-2 in a closelyfought two-hour, 43 minute contest on Centre Court. It took Radwanska eight match points to see off the resilient Li, in an entertaining clash where the 24-year-old Pole just had the edge over the 2011 French Open champion. Radwanska plays hard— hitting German 23rd seed Sabine Lisicki — who beat defending champion Serena Williams in the fourth round — in the semi-finals on Thursday, ensuring at least one player of Polish descent in Saturday’s final. “From the first point to the last point it was really great battle,” Radwanska said after sealing her semi-final spot. “She was really playing very well. So I’m double happy I could beat her playing very good tennis. “I was really pushing myself, even 200 percent, to play till the end, fight till the end. Just very happy that I did it,” Li added. AFP

light rain began to fall. When they resumed after two and a half hours, Stephens quickly dropped the first set and slipped 2-0 down in the second, losing the first nine points as the crowd, convinced that Bartoli’s complaints over the state of the court had been unjustified, jeered following their lengthy wait. “I don’t get why the crowd was against me,” said the 28year-old Bartoli. “The courts are slippy even when they are dry but when they are wet they can be dangerous. “It was just a precaution. wanted to make sure I didn’t get hurt. I didn’t want to come off for any other reason.” The Frenchwoman was still being booed before Stephens broke back for 2-1. In a low-quality second set, played out in a chilly, half-full stadium, there were eight breaks of serve in the first nine games. Until she held for 5-5, the 20year-old American had won just one of 17 points on serve. But she was unable to avoid being broken again in the crucial 12th game with the 21 winners she hit to Bartoli’s six unable to save her. AFP

TRI-NATION SERIES

Lions tame India with 161-run win Tharanga amassed 174 runs as Sri Lanka plundered India by 161 runs at Sabina Park.

KINGSTON: Upul Tharanga plundered the highest individual score in a one-day international (ODI) in the Caribbean as Sri Lanka steamrollered India by 161 runs in the third match of the TriSeries at Sabina Park on Tuesday. Replying to Sri Lanka’s mammoth 348 for one in their 50 overs, in which Tharanga made an unbeaten 174 and Mahela Jayawardene 107, World Cup and Champions Trophy holders India were dismissed for just 187 in the 45th over. “It was a bad day at the office,” admitted India’s stand-in captain Virat Kohli. “We took some time to switch on in the field and by then the Sri Lankans were off and away, and even when we batted I don’t think we applied ourselves as well as we should have.” India looked a pale shadow of the side that had gone unbeaten in lifting the Champions Trophy in England just over a week earlier. The dismissal of Kohli, standing in for the injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni, hooking his Sri Lankan counterpart Angelo Mathews to long-leg, virtually ended the match as a contest as India fell to 57 for three in the

FIXING Kaneria urged to come clean after appeal loss LONDON: Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was urged to “come clean” after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) rejected his appeal against a life ban from cricket at a hearing in London Tuesday. The ECB handed down the life ban last year after a panel found him guilty of inducing his then Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield to deliberately under-perform. He got him to agree to concede a certain number of runs in return for money while bowling in a county one-day match in 2009. After Tuesday’s verdict, ECB chairman Giles Clarke, called who was also chairman of the International Cricket Council’s Pakistan task force from 2010-2012, called on Kaneria to make a clean breast of the matter. 16th over. Earlier Jayawardene played a typically classy innings in compiling his first ODI hundred for two years and his 16th in all in a 213-run opening stand in which he outscored Tharanga. But ultimately it was Tharanga’s day as he timed the

ball sweetly and caned the lacklustre Indian bowling to all parts of the ground with dismissive authority. He brought up his 13th ODI hundred off 124 deliveries with 11 fours and finished with 19 fours and three sixes in his 174 off just 159 balls.

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews promoted himself to number three to join the run feast and raced to 44 off 29 balls as he and Tharanga plundered an unbroken 135 off the final 11.2 overs. “We really needed this,” said Mathews, who acknowledged that his team was under pressure to get a good result after being beaten comfortably by the West Indies in the tournamentopener last Friday. “Hats off to Mahela and Upul, who really set this up for us and allowed the bowlers to complete the job.” A disciplined Sri Lankan bowling attack never allowed the Indians a chance to threaten the daunting target. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath was the most successful bowler with three for 37 while Sachithra Senanayake and Lasith Malinga claimed two apiece. Mathews proved the most ecomomical. Sharing the new ball, he conceded only 23 runs off his eight overs, picking up the key wicket of Kohli. India, bottom of the standings after losing their opening two matches, now need to lift themselves immediately for the second half of the tournament in

ASHES PREVIEW

Trott sees England gains from lose-lose situation LONDON: England batsman Jonathan Trott (in pic) insisted the side had made the best out of a “lose-lose” situation after their Ashes warm-up match against Essex was stripped of its firstclass status on the third day of four. Essex saw seamers David Masters and Tymal Mills leave the field Tuesday with Achilles and hamstring injuries respectively before part-time offspinner Tom Westley was unable to bowl after dislocating a finger fielding at gully. At that point England’s batsmen, facing a severely weakened attack, were not getting the sort of preparation coach Andy Flower wanted them to have ahead of next week’s first Test against Australia at Trent Bridge. But seamers Boyd Rankin and Reece Topley, left out by England and Essex respectively

from their original XIs, were still at Chelmsford and this allowed the pair to be drafted into the

county’s attack. Such a move immediately stripped the game of its firstclass status and ensured the 107 scored by Tim Bresnan and the

career best five-wicket haul of young Essex leg-spinner Tom Craddock achieved in England’s first innings would no longer count in the record books. England captain Alastair Cook (82) and Trott (79) did both face a tougher time at the crease Tuesday in playing Rankin and Topley than might otherwise have been the case. They both retired out anyway as England ended a rain-shortened third day of four on 217 for three in their second innings, a lead of 352. “Obviously, two bowlers down, it can be quite tricky for a captain — a long season and down to Ravi (Bopara) and Saj Mahmood,” said Trott. “You don’t want to bowl Saj into the ground, for 15 overs straight or something like that. “If it hadn’t been done, you’d

Rooney may want new challenge: Mike LONDON: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney may wish to leave the Premier League champions in order to seek a “fresh challenge” elsewhere, according to former assistant coach Mike Phelan. The future of the 27year-old player has been the subject of intense speculation in the British media, after outgoing manager Alex Ferguson revealed that he had asked to the leave the club for the second time.

Wayne Rooney may wish to leave the Premier League champions in order to seek a “fresh challenge” elsewhere, according to former assistant coach Mike Phelan. Rooney made a similar request in 2010, only for Ferguson to persuade him to stay put at Old Trafford. The England star has been linked with clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks but Phelan believes he would only leave United if he felt he had nothing left to achieve there. “Wayne is at the greatest club you can be at,"

Phelan told BBC radio, in comments reported in several British media outlets on Tuesday. “Why would you want to jeopardise that, unless you want a fresh challenge and you feel that challenge isn’t being met at Manchester United?" Phelan was released by United in May after David Moyes was appointed as the successor to Ferguson as manager. Moyes, who launched Rooney’s career at Everton, is expected to speak to the striker about his future this week. “What will be, will be. I haven’t got a clue," Phelan said when asked to speculate about what Rooney would do. Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of Rooney joining him at the north London club. “If it happens, it would be amazing," the 21-yearold told the ESPN FC website. “He’s the type of player who can win you trophies. Just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that." Rooney is scheduled to report back for pre-season training on Thursday, with the United squad due to fly out for a three-week tour of Australia and Asia on Wednesday next week.
