Winds of change Dadasaheb Phalke’s Raja Harischandra, which released on May 3, 1913, sowed the seeds for what would become one of the largest and most prolific film industries in the world. On the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema, we go back in time to trace the major turning points that triggered a huge change in the respective film industries.

ARM-TWISTED ON AADHAAR? Fuelled by rumours that Aadhaar is going to be a lifeline for the common man, people are queuing up for the card. However, many from the political spectrum to civil society and legal circles question the rationale of compelling people on a ‘non-essential’ service. It smacks of political vested interests or even a scandal, they say.
A rare portrait of a legend Indian cinema owes a lot to PK Nair, the founder of the National Film Archive of India. The monumental task Nair undertook is in itself awe-inspiring, and that’s precisely what inspired him.

Fat penalty for late EAMCET applicants
Heavy late fee sum proves a burden for lower middle class students. Student leaders plead for reduction in amount.

T
he most awaited Engineering Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) is just round the corner and so far nearly four lakh students have applied for the test. Though the submission of application without late fee is long gone by, students who want to apply at the last minute are still given a chance till May 7, with a maximum late fee of `10,000. Though a huge amount, the late fee has the sanction of the AP High Court. Students who submit the fee late will have to pay the fine depending on the time allotted for the submission of the fee. The late application penalty starts with `500 and goes up to

`10,000. This does not, however, seem to deter students from applying for the test. Students who still want to apply for the entrance test after April 27 have to submit the form by paying `10,000. So far, 53 applicants have paid up `10,000 and officials at the JNTU say that the number of late applicants will go up substantially. What many last minute applicants don’t know is that the late applicants are subjected to a police verification to make sure that the intentions of the applicants are not mala fide. “From the time of notification, there is ample time for students to apply for the entrance exam without having to pay a late fee. Even after that, students can apply by paying a late fee depending on the grace time
allotted. There are thousands of students who, due to unavoidable reasons, apply by paying a fine of `500- `1,000. However, when students pay huge amounts like `5,000 to `10,000, doubts arise. If an applicant can pay `10,000 for an entrance exam, it is more likely that their AROUND THE

intentions are unclear. We are not saying that this is the case for all; there have been situations when students, under unavoidable circumstances, fearing having to lose a year, have applied by paying such huge amounts. But just to ensure that there is no malprac-
tice and the exam goes on smoothly, we give the details of the candidates who apply in the last minute to the police. There is a verification process done as a compulsory formality,” says MV Ramana Rao, convener, Eamcet-2013, and registrar of JNTU. But those students who are not rich find the amount of late fee a burden. “I did not want to write the EAMCET exam this year because of the sudden death of my dad. But my mother and others wanted me to apply, so I had no choice but to pay a late fee of `10,000. It was difficult for me to pay such a big amount but my mother did not want me to lose out on a year,” says Uma (name changed) who will be appearing for the medical entrance exam this year. Student leaders feel that the government should consider and make the penalty amount less. “Nearly 90 per cent of students who pay huge amounts to apply for the entrance test will obviously not be from middle class (families) and can afford to pay the amount. However, for students from middle class families, who have to apply in the last minute due to unavoidable reasons, it is a very big amount. Though it is an order by the court, the government should consider and reduce the penalty,” says T Surender, JNTU JAC leader.

Man who killed for cigarette gets life sentence NEW DELHI: A youth, who had murdered a man for failing to give him a cigarette, has been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by a Delhi court which said he has no value of a human being. Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau awarded the jail term to 25-year-old Rakesh for stabbing victim Suraj with a knife leading to his death, saying he did not hesitate to take law in his hands and evidence showed that he had the habit of snatching money from poor persons. According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the evening of November 27, 2010 in Sultanpuri area when Rakesh had demanded a cigarette from Suraj. The police said Suraj had gone to the market with his uncle and cousin and on their way back to home, they started smoking 'beedi'. In the meantime, accused Rakesh who was known to them asked the victim to give him a cigarette. The victim told him that he did not have a cigarette following which Rakesh threatened to kill him if he failed to provide him with the same. Due to Suraj's inability to give cigarette, Rakesh took out a knife and stabbed him on his chest, it said. Suraj's relatives, who were standing at a distance, took the injured to a hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors, the police said. PTI

But nobody wants to leave and to avert compulsory return they manage to get transferred from one circle to another. “This is called short-standing,” says a senior official, who keeps a tab on the issue. Despite coaxing and legal compulsions to get back to their original departments, most of them manage to stay using political clout and unions. LOS ANGELES: Michael Jackson's family tried several times to carry out "interventions" on the singer to help him fight drug addiction, but he denied having a problem, a trial heard yesterday. The late King of Pop's mother Katherine Jackson told police a few months after his June 2009 death about the attempts to convince her son to do something about his drug abuse, a detective said. The 50-year-old singer died from an overdose of the powerful sedative and anesthetic propofol, administered by Murray to help the Thriller legend deal with chronic insomnia. Detective Orlando Martinez, citing an interview with the Jackson family matriarch in September 2009, told the court: "Mrs Jackson said the family tried to help him but he would have nothing to do with it." adayatras, door-todoor campaigns and public rallies are the second choice for some senior political leaders in Karnataka who have realised the impact social media can make on people today and have quickly opened accounts on Facebook and Twitter. While social media provides politicians an additional platform to campaign, the real competition is who gets the maximum hits. Young politicians like Krishna Byregowda and Priya Krishna, both from Congress, have had accounts for long but their party veterans like G Parameshwara and Siddaramaiah have opened accounts just weeks before
the poll process started, as also Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and his deputy R Ashoka. However, most of them do not operate their accounts personally or reply to the comments, they are managed by professionals hired for the purpose. AROUND THE

Ashoka is candid enough to admit that he does not operate his account on a day-today basis. Some experts in Basavanagudi are doing voluntary service and are operating his page which has got considerable hits ever since it

Health Minister Arvind Limbavali who has been popular in the social media going by the hits he has received, says this mode of communication has helped him reach out to many segments of society. With his friends’ list crossing 5,000, he has opened a new account. Pictures of politicians as the “good samaritan” doing social work and involving themselves in humanitarian service are their biggest USP on social media. 26/11 prosecutor killed
He was gunned down at a time when there have been important developments in both the Mumbai attack case and Bhutto assassination. ISLAMABAD: A senior prosecutor handling the 26/11 Mumbai attack case and Benazir Bhutto assassination case was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in the Pakistani capital today, police said. Gunmen riding a motorcycle fired at the car of FederalInvestigation Agency prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfizar Ali in the busy commercial area of Karachi Company at 7.30 am. AROUND THE

Ali, who was driving, was hit by several bullets and lost control of the car. The vehicle hit a woman crossing the road and she too died later in hospital. His bodyguard, Frontier Corps trooper Farman Ali, was injured in the attack. Ali was heading for an antiterrorism court in the garrison city of Rawalpindi for a hearing of the Bhutto assassination case when he was attacked, his son Nisar told the media.
The team, also inspected one of the toilets in Yakutpura. The toilet, which had no doors, was in a shabby condition as there was no worker to maintain it. Deputy commissioner of Circle No 4 has been asked to arrange proper maintenance. The team also inspected a culvert at Hafeez Baba Nagar near Sunny Gardens. The work on the culvert was slow. The commissioner concerned has been asked to complete it on a priority basis.

The prosecutor and his bodyguard were taken to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.
Some doctors said Ali was killed instantly as several bullets had hit him in the face. The gunmen escaped after
the brazen shooting. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Ali’s son Nisar and unnamed colleagues were quoted by TV news channels as saying that the prosecutor had been receiving threats from a banned extremist group for some time. His colleagues said he had continued pursing high-profile terrorism cases despite these threats. The prosecutor was gunned down at a time when there have been important developments in both the Mumbai attack case and Bhutto assassination case. On April 13, a private witness from Karachi had identified Shahid Jamil Riaz, one of the accused in the Mumbai attack case, as the person who had bought inflatable boats used by the terrorists who assaulted India’s financial hub in November 2008. The Federal Investigation Agency had recently begun interrogating former president Pervez Musharraf over the 2007 assassination of Bhutto. PTI

he name Jeff Hanneman may mean little to most people, but to a group of us who came of age in the 80s, the founder of Slayer, is an icon. I was 11 when I went through my first existential crisis, and the misanthropic worm began to burrow its way into my marrow. I was slowly rebelling against the music of my parents, comprising CCR, Fleetwood Mac, and Led Zeppelin. But even the angst-ridden punk of the Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys did little to placate the rising tide within. It was 1987 before I stumbled on two albums that would change my life for good. Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All and Slayer’s Show No Mercy were like Dark Angel’s that descended to carve a path through life for me. It was the music we had craved for, and in a Third World country it was hell-sent. Slayer and Metallica, along with Venom, Misfits, and Motorhead, would form the basis of a musical foundation that stays with me till this day. Jeff Hanneman, like Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett and Eric Meyer, would compose a riff that would enable us to approach fresh hells with a grim determination born from the knowledge that not only were we not alone, but somewhere in the Bay Area, there were people who understood us. Since 2011 Hanneman battled necrotising fasciitis, an illness that threw up no small amounts of irony, but eventually it was a failed liver that killed him this morning. Hanneman will never know what he meant to us. But I can tell you one thing; today Slayer songs will be looping on music players all around the world. It is the end of an era, one that began its demise when Metallica released the Black Album.

Sanaullah, a resident of Sialkot, was attacked by a former Indian Army soldier, convicted for murder, following an altercation yesterday, a police officer said. He received serious head injuries and was taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu, where doctors said he had slipped into a coma, much like Sarabjit Singh who was attacked in a Lahore jail on April 26 and died yesterday. “He has suffered serious head injuries and is in a coma. He has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and we are planning surgery,” a doctor said. The administration has readied stand-by arrangements to shift Sanaullah for specialised treatment outside Jammu and Kashmir “if required”, an official said. Police said Sanaullah was being tried for murder since the late 1990s for carrying out act of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
‘What did NDA do for Sarabjit’s release?’ NEW DELHI: The Congress today questioned what the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government did to ensure the release of Sarabjit Singh when it was in power, adding that the focus should now be on other Indians in Pakistani jails. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cornered the government over Sarabjit’s death yesterday, demanding that diplomatic ties with Pakistan be scaled down until an assurance is offered for the security of Indians in Pakistani jails. BJP leaders had also blamed the government for not doing enough to save Sarabjit Singh. “When then prime minister (Atal Bihari Vajpayee) went to Lahore, was Sarabjit Singh’s release on the agenda?” Congress leader Manish Tewari asked yesterday.

A
40m reals engineering project is in the pipeline to remove the stench from the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The lagoon will be the venue for rowing events during the 2016 Olympics. The smell has sporadically plagued the “Marvellous City” for centuries. The reason for the stink is the seasonally fetid waters of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. The odour has raised questions about the city’s efforts to clean up and modernise in time for the World Cup and Olympics. Some have voiced suspicions of corruption and inefficiency because the smell seemed worse than ever this year despite the large sums of money that have been spent in recent years to reduce pollution.
AROUND THE
WORLD
So foul was the smell in March that thousands of fish died because of it and had to be scooped off.
The lagoon, which sits between Ipanema and the Tijuca forest, was once three times its current size, but it has been gradually diminished by landfill projects as Rio spread from its colonial centre to the tourist resorts along the coast.
The lagoon is fed by sea water via a canal from the Atlantic and fresh water that cascades down from the surrounding hills via three rivers. The result is a fragile ecosystem of brakish water with a very low oxygen content of between 0.5
and 0.9% that is quickly sucked up by spawning fish, savelha, and the organic matter that is carried from the forests during the autumn rainy season. The city and national government recently approved a plan to build four, 2.8 metre diameter pipes under Ipanema at an estimated cost of 40m reals. This would allow more oxygen into the waters of the lagoon and make it easier for the savelha to swim out to the sea. Another 20m reals will be spent on expanding the nearby beach of Leblon, which has lost been steadily losing sand to the canal. Bidding on the contract is due to start around August. AGENCIES

n April 11, the Delhi High Court pulled up the state government over a PIL filed by an individual for illegally making the Aadhaar card enrolment mandatory. "The entire project is meant to be voluntary in nature and this is reflected in the Aadhaar enrolment form that clearly mentions that the enrolment is free and voluntary," Ashok Chandolia noted in his PIL . However, within the first few phases of the project’s implementation, executive orders were issued, making the card mandatory for obtaining various certificates relating to "caste, domicile, income, death and birth." The petition also said that the card has been made necessary for registration of documents relating to
property, will and marriages. So legally and on the record, while the Centre claims that enrolment is not mandatory, many essential services are linked to the Aadhaar enrolment. While the basis of the card was to empower the poor who lack ID proofs to access various welfare schemes, it has slowly turned into a pre-requisite,
thanks to a few loopholes in the legislation. “The UID’s concept note states that enrolment will not be mandatory but benefits and services linked to the UID will be mandated. Senior police officers shared their concern with Postnoon. “One thing leads to another,” said a police officer. “Milad unNabi procession used to be a large one traditionally; of late, some community leaders are pushing it further to make it a show of strength. The result is that Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti this year were very huge. MONEY MATTERS
T
here is a raging debate over how the new ticket prices are going to have an impact on filmgoers and the public reaction doesn’t seem to be in favour of what a section of film industry has been lobbying for several years now. Will people really spend `200 on a film in a multiplex or `70 for a balcony ticket in a single screen theatre? Compared to most other cities like Bangalore, New Delhi, Pune and Mumbai, the ticket prices in Hyderabad have been traditionally quite low and this increase in price tickets hasn’t, naturally, gone down well with a lot of people. After all, we cannot fathom why anyone would spend so
much for a movie. In fact, a section of film industry representing the interests of low budget filmmakers believes that the new system will deter people from watching their films which is, in a way, true. If a film doesn’t have a good prerelease buzz, there are little chances of it doing good business unless it has exceptional content. And then there’s threat of piracy, which a lot of people believe will take a heavy toll on film industry. Despite several other requests, particularly those pertaining to increase in the number of prints and number of shows of small films, the government finally decide to agree to only on ticket price hike. The reason behind why they ignored other requests is left to our imagination, but there’s a need to introduce differential pricing on movie tickets. Currently, no matter what film you watch, the ticket prices remain the same irrespective of the day or language. It would be great if ticket prices are lowered for morning shows and have separate pricing for weekdays and weekends like what multiplexes in other cities do. At least, that would make a lot of students and youth happy.
RUMOUR HAS IT ...
WEEKEND WATCH
Telugu movies find a new haven... T here has been a sudden spurt in the number of Telugu films being shot in European countries, other than Switzerland, of late. Earlier this year, Iddarammayilatho was extensively shot in Barcelona, Balupu was shot in Portugal and Vishnu’s upcoming film Doosukeltha is currently being shot in Slovenia. Thailand and Malaysia are slowly but surely losing their sheen, unless the ‘script’ demands it. So what has
led to this sudden change in plans? Rumour has it that European countries especially Spain, Italy, Portugal and few others of Eastern Europe have been approaching filmmakers in India to shoot films in

here hasn’t been an actor like Vijay Sethupathi in Tamil cinema in a long time. Not only has he become the most sought after actor if you have a great script, but also he seems to have cracked the code to pull the theatres to the screens solely on his emerging popularity. It all began with Karthik Subbaraj’s horror film Pizza, which went on to become a surprise hit last year. In December, 2012, he scored another hit with Balaji Tharaneetharan’s Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and his latest film Soodhu Kavvum, which released a few days ago, is on track to become a big hit. His unassuming demeanour and willingness to trust new directors has earned him a good fan following. A big thumbs up to this rising star in Tamil cinema.
their respective countries. Our filmmakers are more than glad to oblige. The line producers of Telugu films, in association with the local crew in Europe, have made it a lot more easier to shoot abroad. In the past, the cast and crew used to be in a hurry to return to India, but these days, they seem to be preferring extended trips. Is there more than what meets the eye? Of course. Who wouldn’t love a free trip to such places!

fter weeks of soaring tensions over US-South Korean war games that ended this week, North Korea has toned down its warlike rhetoric in what observers say is a sign that it may now be ready to talk. Pyongyang had accused the United States of using the twomonth joint exercises as a platform for a planned military strike, and reacted furiously to the use of nuclear-capable bombers in the drills. But after weeks of threats of missile strikes and nuclear war by the North, images of its leader Kim Jong-Un inspecting troops have given way to pictures of his visits to sports events and a health complex with his wife. “North Korea appears to be taking a breather after its brinkmanship reached fever pitch,” said Dongguk University professor Kim Yong-Hyun. He said Pyongyang could further shift its stance after an upcoming summit in Washington on May 7 between US President Barack Obama and South Korean leader Park GeunHye, who took office in February. “North Korea wants some gestures from Obama. Then it may try to open dialogue with the United States as it did before,” he said. If it fails to achieve its goal, “the regime may go ahead with missile launches or another nuclear test”, Kim said. While the North has a history of sabre-rattling followed by a cooling-off period in an effort to win concessions from the West, experts say Washington and Seoul may be losing patience.

here is something wrong with our country’s collective psyche. It’s sickening. Neighbour after neighbour ill treats us and get away with it. The country’s ruling class, the Congress and its allies, make pitiable motions of protest, such as summoning the envoy and registering the protests! No bully ever has gone by the rulebook. Show me one. Bullying essentially stems from the knowledge that the quarry is weak and has no scope of countering it. It is a canine psychology. If you run, the dog runs after you, dare it and it withdraws. What the ordinary citizen, who is also the tax payer, does not understand is the wisdom of maintaining a massive defence force, over a lakh in uniform and all the attending paraphernalia spending a massive fortunes of its resources. The question is, for what? It all began in 1962 when a naive Jawaharlal Nehru government drafted poems and sang India-China bhai bhai. The dragon had a hearty laugh when it overran thousands of kilometres of Indian Territory
and killed an unspecified number of Indian youths. It was the most heinous and the most disgraceful act any nation was called upon to bear. Is it a coincidence that the same Nehru family rules the country today and the same treatment is meted out to the nation by the same enemies? While China is a larger country with greater resources, India has enough muscle and resources at least to protect its borders. Don’t we have? Pardoning the enemy is a mistaken charity—learn something from Prithvi Raj Chauhan. Don’t we ever learn from history? The way a headstrong puny country like Pakistan did to our parliament was the second most shameful act after the Chinese aggression. Would any country in the world allow its hallowed precincts to be attacked by a foreign mercenary and yet sit making noises of protests? And yet, this country swallowed its pride. The latest is Sarabjit Singh. The man was subjected to untold sufferings devoid of any mercy and yet our governmental response was, “It is sad.” Not reacting both militarily and diplomatically is a folly because no bully has ever read the Biblical parable of showing the other cheek. By now, India must know its biggest bully is
not Pakistan but China. All actions from 1962 to Tibet and periodic incursions in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh and constructing highway are all shiny examples of brazen bullying. Blocking the dragon from varied ways besides military action should have been taken up. Chinese low quality goods are flooding Indian markets and
they benefit from this. Why do we allow this? Every ordinary citizen is asking these questions and the government goes on making predictable noises. This won’t do. Let us understand that death comes to the brave only once while the poltroon suffers deaths many times. Should we continue to sing, ‘Mere watan ke logon...’ after 50 years?
EDITORIALS Show some gumption, India A long way to go
A
ll those concerned with this country’s future must contemplate on why India is taken lightly by its neighbours despite being a nuclear-tech power in the sub continent. We have everything from human resource to technology and yet a gadfly like Pakistan humiliates us. Can an ordinary tax payer be faulted if he asks what use is the use of a gigantic military we pay for if they are to sit and silently watch Chinese marching in? Could he be faulted, again, if he asks how a pauper country such as Pakistan whose existence itself is in peril browbeats us and manhandle Indian prisoners? Even a small island country Sri Lanka asks us to keep off though ethnic Tamils’ lives are at stake. It is a fact that it is not wealth or weapons that earn respect for a country. It is the gumption, its self respect that finally matters. It is this that India is miserably lacking. It’s no use blaming Congress alone, our collective psyche is sick, and therefore weak. Nobody can add spine to a creature, you know. Sad, India.

On the occasion of the birthday of our finest filmmaker, Satyajit Ray, let’s be honest with ourselves. Hollywood comes up with original stuff most of the times. In most blockbuster movies in Bollywood, we have scenes ripped off from Hollywood. We have buffed up beafcakes doing outlandish stuff in most movies, serenading and dancing with half-clad belles, and the highlight of the movie not being the story, but item numbers. We have a long way to go yet, Saif. But please hope on.

ver the years, Bachupally has emerged as an educational hub of the City. The children or the residents here do not need to travel long hours to reach world-class educational institutes. City after 2007 affected the real estate market of this region too. The property prices have been almost stagnant for years and there were not any new project launches during this time. But with recent real estate recovery, many developers in and around have initiated new projects. Developers say that the real estate market in the locality is back on track with moderate growth in prices over last few months. This one of the very few places in the City where one can either buy a economical flat at

Talking about strengths of the locality, D Ramchandra Varma, manager (sales), Praneeth Group of companies, says, “The children of the residents around this locality enjoy the accesses to all levels of education in close proximity. Many buyers are ready to take the pain of travelling to office but want their children to have the luxury of their school within walking distance. The prices are moderate as compared to KPHB Colony or Miyapur. A buyer can
buy villa here at a price of flat in KPHB Colony. If a buyer is ready to travel for another 5-6 km, he can own an asset, which will stay valuable for a lifetime.” Explaining further, he says, “A flat is a place just to live but doesn’t appeal as a valued property as compared to a villa. Neither the floor nor the roof belongs to the resident. The undivided land share, which he gets, is very minimal and not really useful for any future construction. On the contrary, the buyer gets a specific land in the case of villa, which can be used

However, falling under a panchayat created certain issues for the flat buyers. Most of the developers, constructed apartments with just panchayat permissions, have to undergo BPS and LRS schemes to regularise their property. A buyer in this locality has to be careful and cross check the legal validation of property before buying it. On the negative side, the

There will be two metro stations and one Inter-city bus terminal (ICBT) with in 6 km. With the merger to GHMC, the village will definitely gain sheen. ish the project, the more will be the debt burden, which in turn will push the property values up by the time it reaches the customer. To make both parties winners, we requested the government to remove redundant NOCs. The system can be made better by delegating powers to other qualified professionals. For example, why one has to go to the fire department for an NOC? We regularly work with architects, who have similar fire safety expertise. They can delegate or empanel architects in giving permissions or NOCs under stipulated regulations. At the same time, the authority should have every right to inspect and give orders as and
eal estate market in the City is gradually turning out be a seller’s market. The second half of 2013 will be a seller’s market, where there will be many potential buyers but not many properties for sale. Over last four years, the City market was a buyer’s market wherein there was slump in the economy and there were more properties for sale as compared to by the buyers. Real estate should be always be buyer’s market for the growth of industry and economy. Government should see that there is a right environment for buying and developing property. In a supportive environment, more realtors get into the development of property. For instance, government should provide across-the-table sanctions, which will eventually push more stock in to the market. There should be more land

for residential usage in master plans. This will create a win-win situation for both buyers and sellers, and a sustainable buyers market. Sometimes, the government does not understand our issues. Excessive bureaucracy is creating many barriers. All these permissions and clearances should be time-bound. For instance, now, a builder is spending 4-6 months on single-storeyed buildings and 8-10 months on multi-storeyed buildings. This is the time that developer spends excluding NOCs that he has to get from various organisations. Almost two years of valuable developer time is spent on these permissions. when necessary. On request of CREDAI, the ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation constituted a committee, headed by Dhanendra Kumar, to streamline procedures and give online sanctions for real estate projects. Various ministries from where realtors get permissions are made members of the committee. There are some proactive state governments, who started implementing this procedure on trial basis. We recently submitted a report to the ministry and seek that this online permission procedure will be implemented across the country in any of the central government schemes. The writer is the national president of CREDAI.

Vitamin supplements are necessary most of the time to fuel our body with additional nutrients, but there is a side-effect to it. Most vitamins are not really useful when taken as supplements to a normal diet. In fact, they can be potentially harmful. We tackle some associated myths.
1
TAKE THIS: Let’s face it. Eating leafy greens like spinach and broccoli is the last thing on your mind. So you’d rather pop a pill, since the supplement helps give you the same nutrient. FACT IS: There is a reason why doctors/mums ask you to eat your veggies, or else you would be eating pills all four meals a day. There is no substitute to the healthy, diseasefighting benefits that vegetables offer. For proof, you might want to read a recent study from the Oregon State University that found that an important phytochemical in broccoli and other similar veggies is poorly absorbed and much less beneficial when taken in supplement form. Having a change of mind?

TAKE THIS: Since you are taking vitamins, you need to cut down on your diet as you will be receiving extra doses of nutrients. FACT IS: Some individuals believe that taking a supplement or a multi-vitamin is more effective than having a smart diet. Ideally, we should be consuming our nutrients through fresh and healthy foods. There is nothing wrong with taking a daily multi-vitamin, but try to ensure that this is not your only healthy route. Balance your vitamin intake with a reasonable amount of fruits, vegetables and lean meat.
TAKE THIS: Popping vitamin pills are the best way to ensure a healthy body for all. FACT IS: True, these vitamins do help along the way but depending on these multi-coloured pills to do the ‘taking care of your health’ part is a little too far-fetched. The body actually has limited storage for these nutrients and supplements. A lot of these are excreted from our bodies. The best way is to do regular exercise and eat a wide variety of food based on their nutritional values.

FLEME VARKEY
fleme.v@postnoon.com
TAKE THIS: You associate letters of the vitamin with the diseases, like A for asthma or anaemia and C for cold FACT IS : You religiously swallow a whole cluster of vitamins that range from A to Z, proof enough you know nothing about them or are under some misconception. Vitamin C is not C for cold. Even if a vitamin does no harm, it may do, well, nothing. A review of 30 studies involving more than 11,000 people who took at least 200 mg of vitamin C daily found that it offered little protection in reducing the length or severity of common colds for most people. It did work for some people, such as marathon runners and skiers, who undergo periods of high stress, but the study’s authors say the rest of us shouldn’t bother taking it.
3
TAKE THIS: You eat Vitamins A, B, C, E and K and a whole host of other pills and therefore you don’t need to exercise. FACT IS: No, that’s the lamest excuse you can come up with for not heading to the gym or moving those rusty old bones. In fact, a daily 30 minute quick walk will do more for you than taking supplements, especially if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition, or are overweight.

FAR CRY GOES RETRO
AAKASH SHIPMENT OVER
This download-only game in which you combat dragons is a departure from the otherwise gritty series
GLENN CHAPMAN feedback@postnoon.com SAN FRANCISCO: Ubisoft unleashed a wacky take on action title Far Cry, illustrating how the low production costs of mobile-ready spinoffs allow videogame giants to show off their playful side. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon pits a cyber-commando against laser-shooting dragons in a sassy tribute to videogames from the late 1970s and early 1980s. The release of Blood Dragon comes as Ubisoft adapts to the booming popularity of downloading games for play on consoles, smartphones, tablets, or personal computers. It will be joined in coming months by new titles including a Prince of Persia for play on Apple mobile gadgets and an online gladiator game in which players buy virtual slaves and turn them into arena fighters. “These kinds of games give us more opportunity to take risks,” Ubisoft vice president of sales Tony Key said while providing early looks at coming titles during a Digital Days event at the company’s San Francisco studio.
Gamers moving online: survey WASHINGTON: More than seven in 10 Americans who play videogames are now doing so online, a survey showed yesterday. The NPD Group study showed the figure of 72 percent of online gamers was up five percentage points from a year earlier. Along with the rise in online gaming, there was also an increase in the number of hours spent playing. The rise was nine per cent overall and six per cent for online games. “Besides the size of the gaming audience and sales performance, one of the key metrics for the industry to watch is the time gamers spend playing games,” said Liam Callahan, an NPD industry analyst.
Blood Dragon, available as a download to consoles or computers for $15, lets players “get the girl, kill the bad guys and save the world in a VHS-era vision of the future,” according to the Francebased videogame titan. Dean Evans and his team at Ubisoft’s studio in Montreal kept the script, graphics, and storylines simple while weaving pulse-
“This study found that the overall amount of time spent gaming, and time spent gaming online increased across virtually every type of device, and notably so, versus 2012.” The PC ranked as the top platform for online gaming, with 68 per cent using that device. But PC gaming use was down four per cent and online gaming on mobile devices grew by 12 percentage points since last year. “While many gamers prefer games in the physical format, the increased availability of digital content paired with a greater amount of connected devices has driven an increase in the number of consumers going online to access the content they want,” said Callahan.
pushing action and music into the intentionally retro title. “We went a little bit renegade,” Evans said. “We decided to approach it as this mini-franchise that has gone absolutely mental... There is lots of cyborg murder rage.” Players take on the role of Sergeant Rex Colt, who is billed as “part man, part machine, all American” and
out to defeat a former commanding officer turned villain with an army of killer cyborgs. Controls in the game mirror those in its hit predecessor, Far Cry 3, in which a carefree island vacation by young hipsters turns into a nightmare. In the opening moments of Far Cry 3 players go from swimming, dancing, skydiving and cavorting with friends to escaping the clutches of vicious and arguably psychotic pirates. In contrast, the Blood Dragon script was pumped out quickly and game artists were given a B-movie budget for character gear, resulting in helmets resembling colanders and armor that looks like hockey pads. “We wrote it with a lot of heart,” Evans said of the game script. “It’s difficult writing things that are so bad they are good.” The new title is set in a cartoonish future in which dragons fire laser beams from their eyes. “We are not taking ourselves too seriously; we are just trying to have as much fun as possible,” Evans said. VS Chowdhary is a relieved man these days. After nearly two years since he started the film, the principal shooting of Rey has been completed. Sai Dharam Tej is making his debut as a hero and the film also stars Saiyami Kher and Shraddha Das in lead roles. Talking about the film, YVS Chowdhary said, “We don’t have films which can impress both class and mass audience. There was a time when people love to watch films like Prema Desam, Devdas and Desamudhuru. Although they were love stories, they have a lot of commercial potential. My latest film Rey is a love story which has been made on a huge canvas. The first half is set in Caribbean and the second half unfolds in USA. The entire cast and crew have worked really hard on the film and the dance choreography is outstanding. I’m confident that the film will do a business of more than `30 crore.” The film’s post production has just begun
and it might hit the screens in couple of months. It has been 11 years since YVS Chowdhary began his home production Bommarillu banner. Ask him about what inspired him to get into films, he says, “I am a big fan of NTR and he inspired me to get into films. I must also thank Nagarjuna for producing my first film.” After Rey, YVS Chowdhary is going to produce four new films — Krishna Mukunda Murari, Yevari Maata Vinadu, CM (Common Man) and Thanks Baby. “Krishna Mukunda Murari is a sequel to Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo and Yevari Maata Vinadu is a sequel to Seethayya,” YVS Chowdhary said revealing more details about the films.

hy should women have all the fun with colours? If you’re a man who would love to introduce a splash of colour to your wardrobe but are scared that you may end up looking like a parakeet, here’s a guide on how to sport colours with elan. Here are several tips men need to know about wearing colour.
nWEAR COLOUR IN SUMMER:
Summer is such a festive time of year. Light and bright colours are de rigeur. So I advise you to choose a colour that is your signature colour for the season and one that enhances your natural skin and hair tone.
nBLUE IS ALWAYS A GOOD CHOICE: French blue, which is a rich medium blue, is a flattering for most skin tones.
nSTAY AWAY FROM LOUD PATTERNS: They are distracting and ultimately not a good thing. If it was ever in, it was in the eighties, but we've thankfully moved on.
nLOOK AROUND YOU:
If you are baffled about how to incorporate more colour into your wardrobe, take a look around you. Look at ads and store displays. If you are traveling abroad, see how the locals use colour.
Make a style statement and stand out in a crowd with: Ties: If you are afraid of colour (as most men are) start by introducing it through accessories. Inject some colour into neutral outfits and make them pop by adding a bright tie. Bright Shirts: Love that bright red shirt but won’t wear it because being compared to a tomato is not what you want? Well, you don’t have to bury it in the back of your closet anymore. Bright blues, Crisp Yellows, Emerald greens, Fruity Purples…you can definitely wear them all. The key to looking good in colours is keeping in mind “Less is More”. In case of a shirt that is of a flamboyant colour remember to keep everything else on your person minimal. That includes your pants, belt, socks and shoes. T-shirts and jackets: If you are afraid of sticking out too much in a bold coloured shirt or sweater, then layer your look. For example, add a grey cardigan to a bright
T-shirt and incase of a flamboyant jacket, sober it down with a neutral colour like white or pale blue. Belts: Bright belts don’t need to spell fashion faux pas for you anymore. Keep in mind that when you have a belt that is in a nonconventional colour, it could be treated as an accessory. Team a green, red or orange belt with a sober shirt (white, cream) and standard Black trousers or Denims and you have yourself a winner! Trousers and Denims: Electric blue, yellow, and salmon are great colours which may never go out of fashion, but just to be on the safer side try something a little darker and muted. Think: dark purple, tan, forest green, navy, and burgundy. These colours were all over the fall runways, and these tones help you exude confidence because of the sophistication and yet fun vibe that they give out. A man who knows how to wear colour well can really turn some heads. Men shouldn’t be afraid of colour but should embrace it. They should experiment even if it’s just with shirt colours. It is time to break free from your usual cycle of black and blue. — The author is the creative head of More Mischief. Taj Deccan, is hosting creations of More Mischief currently.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

A RARE PORTRAIT

ndian cinema owes a lot to PK Nair, the founder of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), after all he dedicated his entire life to restoration and preservation of films. In a country where the concept of preservation is yet to evolve, the monumental task which PK Nair had undertaken is in itself awe-inspiring. That’s precisely what inspired director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur to make a documentary titled Celluloid Man, which explores the life and work of PK Nair. “Leave aside films, there’s no concept of preservation of arts, culture and heritage in India. Unless we start caring and seriously do something to preserve our heritage, there’ll be nothing left to show to future generations. Sometimes, we have to look back in order to move ahead,” Shivendra Singh Dungarpur contends. In the early 90s, Shivendra Singh enrolled at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) to study scriptwriting
PK Nair
and director. It was there that he first came across PK Nair. “During his tenure as the director of National Film Archive of India, PK Nair collected nearly 12,000 films and it’s only due to his efforts that we still have 1012 silent films out of the 1,700 silent films made before independence. It’s sad that we had already lost almost 80 per cent of the films by the time NFAI began in 1964. Since filmmakers never bothered to preserve
their films, the cans were sold to extract silver from black and white films, whereas the colour from colour films was in turn used to make bangles,” he reveals. Incidentally, when he began toying with the idea of making a documentary, NFAI didn’t let PK Nair to enter the premises. We ask him what had happened between NFAI and PK Nair and he says, “After PK Nair retired in 1991, the newly
appointed officials felt that he was interfering a lot. PK Nair dedicated his whole life building the archive but when I finally got access to the vault I was shocked to see film cans lying abandoned and they were kept in a wrong temperature,” he recollects. Having spent nearly three years to make the documentary, the journey has been more of a self discovery for him. One such incident occurred in Heggodu, a village in Karnataka. A long time ago, PK Nair had screened films like Pather Panchali and Rashomon to the local areca nut farmers. When he went to meet the farmers, the latter spoke about how the films had an impact on them. “Another time, we discovered a Ford which belonged to Phalke himself. That was quite a revelation,” he says. So what aspect of PK Nair impressed him the most? “His memory is still intact and even at this age he wants to keep preserving films,” he says. He’s now planning to start his own foundation to preserve films. That would be a fitting tribute to PK Nair and his legacy.

Nets stay alive with win over ailing Bulls
The Nets kept their playoff hopes alive with a 95-92 win. CHICAGO: The Brooklyn Nets kept their NBA playoff hopes alive Thursday with a 95-92 victory over the short-handed Chicago Bulls that forced a deciding game seven in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Deron Williams scored 17 points and handed out 11 assists for the Nets. Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson chipped in another 17 points each and Gerald Wallace added 15 for Brooklyn, who will host the series decider on Saturday.
The winner of the series will face reigning NBA champions Miami in the second round. The Heat, led by LeBron James, swept Milwaukee out of the playoffs in four games. By again staving off elimination, the Nets gave themselves a chance to become just the ninth NBA team to come back from a 31 deficit to win a best-of-seven series. “We found a way to win,” said Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo. “I’ve lost track of days. Is today Saturday? Thursday? We were
here last Saturday and weren’t looking real good. “We haven’t turned the corner, but we’re looking a lot better than we looked when we left here last Saturday.” The Nets shot just 28 percent from the field in the second half, but they held on against a Bulls team playing without starting point guard Kirk Hinrich for the second straight game because of a calf injury. Chicago were also without Britain’s Luol Deng, who was sidelined by the flu. AFP

Floyd Mayweather risks title LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather returns to the ring after a year’s absence that included a jail stint on Saturday, risking his World Boxing Council welterweight title against southpaw Robert Guerrero. Mayweather, 43-0 with 26 knockouts, went to jail last June for domestic violence and since his release eight months ago has been working to regain the fitness needed to defend his place atop the list of boxing’s moneymakers. “I feel unbeatable,” Mayweather said. “I’m in tip top condition. I’m in great shape. I have been working hard. “I just call it a vacation. Sometimes the body needs time to heal. The body needs time to rejuvenate. The body needs
time to rest.” But fellow American Guerrero, 31-1 with 18 knockouts and a 15-fight win streak dating to 2005, sees himself as having been given this opportunity in order to humble
Mayweather by inflicting the first loss of his career. “Not just humble Floyd but humble the boxing world,” Guerrero says of his mission. “Some poeple think Floyd is a god with the way he lives, the
way he spends money. Some people think he is unbeatable. “That 0 has to go. He’s going to have his first loss.” And Guerrero thinks the layoff will have more of an impact on Mayweather that he will admit. “Having that year off, you have that ring rust,” Guerrero said. “It’s going to take a little time to shake that ring rust off. Being a whole year’s layoff, he’s going to feel the punches more.” Mayweather plans on making “The Ghost” feel a few blows as well. “Everybody always says what they’re going to do to me,” Mayweather said. “He is a solid opponent. He talks a good game. Now we have to see if he can fight as well as he talks. He’s more like a grappler, a wrestler, than a boxer.” AFP

Klitschko faces cancer-survivor Pianeta
BERLIN: World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko takes on undefeated challenger Francesco Pianeta on Saturday in a busy summer for the Ukrainian champ with a bumper pay-day against Russia’s Alexander Povetkin looming on the horizon. Klitschko will defend his WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts in Mannheim, south-west Germa-
ny, against German-Italian Pianeta who survived testicular cancer three years ago and has a record of 28 wins and one draw. Pianeta beat 48-year-old former world champion Oliver McCall on points last year, then laboured to another points win over South Africa’s Francois Botha, 44, but is eager to face the reigning champion. “I will bust my backside to
get those belts. I am sure that everyone is beatable,” said the 28-year-old, who has a tattoo bearing Julius Caesar’s boast — “veni, vidi, vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered). Unlike Klitschko’s recent victims, Poland’s Mariusz Wach, Frenchman Jean-Marc Mormeck and Britain’s David Haye, Pianeta has already faced Klitschko, having been a former sparring partner.
“He knows what he’s getting himself into and that’s why he’s confident that he can win this fight,” said Klitschko’s trainer Johnathon Banks. That’s what’s going to make this fight a good one.” With 143 sparring rounds under his belt in training, Klitschko is looking for the 60th win of his career with 50 knockouts and he has no plans to add to his three defeats. The surface drew strong criticism from Nadal and Djokovic who threatened not to return to play in the Spanish capital if it wasn’t changed. However, ATP president Brad Drewett outlawed the use of blue clay and so Nadal and world number one Djokovic will return for another potentially fascinating clash. CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA: World number two Rory McIlroy was one of seven players sharing the lead on five-under 67 on Thursday after the first round of the US PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. The weather-damaged greens that raised concerns ahead of the tournament didn’t prevent more than 50 players from breaking par as cool, overcast weather made for good scoring conditions despite some patchy putting surfaces. “They’re not the best greens that we’ve ever putted on, but they’re certainly not the worst, either,” said Northern Ireland’s McIlroy, who claimed his breakthrough victory on the US PGA Tour at this event in 2010 and finished runner-up to Rickie Fowler in a playoff last year.

Judd Trump pulls level
SHEFFIELD, UNITED KINGDOM: Ronnie O’Sullivan squandered an early lead in his World Championship semis against Judd Trump (right) as the defending champion was pegged back to 4-4 after Thursday’s first session. O’Sullivan raced into a 4-1 lead at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, but the four-time champion didn’t press home his
Ladies European Tour. She was fast out of the gate on Thursday, with birdies at the first, second and third holes. She reeled off three more birdies from the fifth to make the turn at six-under. The player was eight-under through 14 before finding trouble at 17, where she missed the green and needed two chips to get on the putting surfaces. She bounced back with a birdie at 18. “On 17, I just missed to the left and just had a bad third shot and second shot,” said Ariya, who has finished in the top five in all three LPGA events she has competed in this season. It did not make me not confident because I knew 18 is not a long par-four, so I could make a birdie on that hole.” Kerr’s round included six birdies and just one bogey. She finished in style, with birdie at 17 and 18. AFP

advantage and Trump hit back to set the stage for an absorbing contest when the match resumes on Friday. O’Sullivan has claimed this week that he will retire from snooker in the near future and is only appearing at the world championships to pay for his children’s school fees. It is not the first time the 37-
year-old English star has made such claims, but if he does finally walk away from the sport, the entertaining Trump is regarded as the natural heir to O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan fired in breaks of 65, 75 and 89 on his way to the three-frame cushion, and looked a strong favourite to secure the 17 frames required for a place in the final. AFP
“The ball still rolls pretty well on them,” he said. McIlroy powered up the leaderboard with four birdies in a row starting at the par-five fifth. He sandwiched birdies at 10 and 11 between bogeys at the ninth and 12th, but joined the group sharing the clubhouse lead with a birdie at 18. McIlroy was joined on 67 by Ryan Moore, Robert Garrigus, Nick Watney, Nate Smith, Derek Ernst and Daniel Summerhays. Smith qualified on Monday to make his return to a PGA Tour event for the first time since 2011, when he played in 16 events. In five starts on the Web.com tour this year his best finish is a tie for 29th, but he briefly gained sole possession of the lead with a birdie at 16 — jumping ahead of six players in the clubhouse on 67. KKR in do or die clash
KKR have failed to impress anyone this season. Meanwhile, the Rajasthan Royals are comfortably placed at the third spot on the points table. The Rahul Dravid-led side have won six of their nine matches and the manner in which they have performed this year, it seems unlikely that they would lose today’s match. James Faulkner has been the best find for the Royals and after his five-wicket haul recently, he is also in the competition for the purple cap.

efending champions Kolkata Knight Riders take on Rajasthan Royals in their IPL clash which is scheduled to be played at Kolkata tonight. The Knights have been struggling to find their form and are placed at a lowly seventh position on the points table. A defeat today could seal the fate of the Knight Riders and eliminate their chances of making it to the playoffs. Kolkata Knight Riders have an enviable side on paper but the players have failed to rise to the occasion and have lost matches which could have otherwise swung in their favour. Even with the likes of skipper Gautam Gambhir, Jacques Kallis, Yusuf Pathan and Brett Lee and Brendon McCullum,
KKR VS RCB AT 8PM ON SET MAX Other players, including Dravid, Stuart Binny, Shane Watson and Ajit Chandila have contributed well. Rajasthan Royals have played the least number of matches in comparison to the other teams this season. Hence if they continue playing in a similar manner then they could be one of the teams which make it to the top four positions and into the playoffs.

Chelsea beat Basel to reach tourney final
Chelsea reached the Europa League final for the first time in their history after surviving a first-half scare. TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Chelsea reached the Europa League final for the first time in their history after surviving a first-half scare to defeat Swiss champions FC Basel 3-1 in the second leg of their semi-final on Thursday. Leading 2-1 from last week’s first leg in Switzerland, Chelsea risked elimination after Mohamed Salah’s welltaken goal in first-half injury time put the visitors 1-0 up on the night. But goals from Fernando Torres and Victor Moses and a David Luiz stunner early in the second half gave last season’s Champions League winners a 5-2 aggregate victory that sets up a meeting with Benfica in the final in Amsterdam on May 15. It was a case of third time lucky for Chelsea, who lost in the semi-finals in both the League Cup and the FA Cup this season, while Basel fell short in their attempt to become the first Swiss team to reach a major European final. Chelsea interim manag-
er Rafael Benitez will now look to end a testing season by claiming the second Europa League title of his career after his 2004 success with Valencia, although his immediate priority is to secure a return to the Champions League via the league. “I came to do a professional job with the commitment of the players. I am pleased for them and everyone here,” said Benitez, who has struggled to win over the club0s fans since arriving in November. “We have had a very good atmosphere, the players have always worked hard, and they have always done their job.” Basel captain Marco Streller passed a late fitness to start at Stamford Bridge and he almost made an immediate impression, shooting wide from a good position in the first minute. Chelsea’s fans had just taken to serenading former coach Jose Mourinho, who has been linked with a return to the club this week, when the hosts’ first chance arrived in the ninth minute. AFP
WALCOTT SAYS DEFENCE KEY TO CL BID
London’s leading clubs will continue their battle for Champions League places this weekend, with Arsenal striker Theo Walcott saying defence holds the key to qualifying for European club football’s leading tournament.
PSG on brink of title glory
PARIS: There are still four games of the Ligue 1 season remaining but Paris SaintGermain could wrap up their first title since 1994 if results go their way this weekend. After starting the campaign as overwhelming title
favourites, the capital club have been permanent fixtures in top spot since late January and came into May nine points clear of second-placed Marseille at the summit. It is therefore only a matter of time before they beco-

me the sixth different name on the trophy in the last six seasons. If Marseille fail to beat Bastia at the Stade Velodrome, then Paris will be in a position to be crowned champions by bettering OM’s result. AFP
