Scientists discover supervolcanoes on Mars LONDON: Scientists analysing images of Mars have discovered a network of supervolcanoes that could have buried the red plant in ash when they were active billions of years ago, Sky News reported Wednesday. The discovery by researchers at London's Natural History Museum and NASA suggests that early Mars was more active than previously thought with massive volcanoes that may have rivalled supervolcanoes on Earth. The finding described in the journal Nature suggests that such massive volcanoes spewed huge clouds of lava and ash in the Martian northern highlands, a place not known to be active in the past.

CORRUPTION
Another scam on LPG subsidy? Any new scheme is highly suspicious. The Centre’s recent decision to pay gas customers directly in their bank account has proved a hassle for many and they complain not having received the promised subsidy for months. MOHSIN ALI ali@postnoon.com
AROUND THE
Hyderabad: Even though the consumers have linked their Adhar number after suffering much hassles, most of the city LPG consumers are not getting the subsidy amount in their account, giving rise to suspicion that the government has hoisted on them another scam. The direct benefit transfer of LPG scheme is implemented in five districts— Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Anantapur, Chittoor and East Godavari from June 2013. Adhar linkage had given a lot of troubles to the common public who had to give up a day’s job and undergo all the discomfort of waiting in the queue and filling up a dozen forms. Even after that some would receive and many would not. After all this trouble, now the Supreme Court has declared Aadhar non-essential. Now the situation is that nobody is responsible to pay the subsidy to the customers. Gas company says it is no longer the authority. Banks plead until they receive the amount from the district authorities what could they do? b on the other hand is supposed to pay full amount in advance, `1024.50 and wait for the subsidy. Now the situation is that gas agencies are free to indulge in black marketing of cylinder. “Any scheme this Congress government brings give rise to scandal,” lamented a bank official who is harassed for nothing by his account holders asking where is the money? Ajit, a gas agency owner from Kulsumpura said he has more than 300 cus-

tomers in the area, but since one month the supply boys are taking back three to four cylinders daily without delivery, as the customers are unable to pay the amount fixed by the oil companies, refusing to take cylinders, due to which we are returning the cylinders to the gas company.
COMPLAINTS GALORE
Murtuza Ali, aged 55, from Kulsumpura, who has a mobile recharge shop, told Postnoon, “I am unable to afford gas anymore. This recharge shop is my only source of income. I get `6,000 to `7,000 a month. We are five members in family. How could I pay the amount gas company is asking for? I did not receive the subsidy amount yet, I booked my cylinder on September 4 and it was delivered on September 16 but even after that, I have not received any subsidy amount though I have provided my Aadhaar number,” G Chandrasekhar, a resident of Vasantha Nagar Colony , Kukatpally, said. The consumers who have provided their Aadhar number to both, the bank and the gas agency, will get the subsidy amount in their bank accounts after they purchased the cylinder at market price, the government announced. Not more than 50 per cent consumers linked their Adhar in city, but seven out of 10
people who have linked their Aadhar card with their bank accounts and gas agencies, saying that even after the confirmation message of Adhar link the government is failed to provide the subsidy amount in our account. District supply officer Vijay Rao said, “The agencies and the banks have bunches of Adahr Xerox to linkup with users accounts. The procedure is still continuing. People are yet busy in connecting their Aadhar with banks, it will take some time to become the situation normal. Chief Rationing Officer Dr Padma told to postnoon that nothing is in our hands, Government put all it efforts to help the customer, provided Aadhaar kits to the gas agencies, people who ensured the Adhar with banks getting the subsidy, though it is taking some time to credited. More she added that, oil companies will cross check after cylinder delivered to the customers whether their Aadhaar linkage has been properly done with the gas agencies and bank accounts, then they issue the subsidy amount for all this it will take minimum of five to 20 days.
WHEN EYES MEET
Making eye contact not always good VANCOUVER: Making eye contact, long considered an effective way of persuasion, might be counterproductive when the listeners already disagree, according to a new study. The study, published recently in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, was the result of collaborations among researchers from Canada, Germany and the US. “There is a lot of cultural lore about the power of eye contact as an influence tool,” said University of British Columbia
AROUND THE
WORLD
professor Frances Chen, one of the first authors of the study. “But our findings show that direct eye contact makes skeptical listeners less likely to change their minds, not more, as previously believed,” Xinhua reported Chen as saying. With the help of recently developed eye-tracking technology, the researchers investigated the effects of eye contact in situations involving
persuasion in a series of experiments. They found that on various controversial issues, the more participants watched a speaker’s eyes, the less persuaded they were by the argument of
the person speaking. Spending more time looking at someone’s eyes as they spoke was only associated with greater receptiveness among participants who already agreed with the speaker on that issue, according to the researchers. “Whether you’re a politician or a parent, it might be helpful to remember that trying to maintain eye contact may backfire if you’re trying to convince someone who has a different set of beliefs than you,” said co-author Julia Minson of Harvard’ s Kennedy School of Government.

The party’s Seemandhra leaders had raised some issues with the party chief Rajnath Singh. The Seemandha leaders are strongly mulling over undertaking pro-united AP programmes in coming days albeit indirectly. However, the central leadership seems to be adamant not to give any liberty for the Seemandhra leaders as it doesn’t have any strong cadres and leaders in the region.

Slaughter houses, wine shops work as usual on Gandhi Jayanti GHMC officials went to no pains to enforce its own directive to keep all slaughter houses closed on Gandhi Jayanti. While few in the City remembered the essence of the day, the UN observed it as a day of peace.
ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Gandhi Jayanti, a day meant as a tribute to the ‘Father of the Nation’, was just a public holiday for some. The celebration of Gandhi Jayanti is not restricted to India only but is also observed by the United Nations as the International Day of non-violence that aims to disseminate his philosophy, principle and believe in nonviolence through proper education and public awareness. While the rest of the world is remembering the day, people of our country seem to have forgotten the essence of October 2. As a mark of paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi who considered consumption of alcohol as a social evil and practiced ahimsa, liquor and meat shops ought to remain closed. The GHMC, under section 533(b) of HMC Act (1955) issued orders for the closure of the Modern Abattoir at Chengicherla (Sheep & Goat, Beef Section) and the retail meat and beef shops within the GHMC limits. However disregarding the orders and not keeping up to the importance of the day, many meat shops in the City remained open and continued to do business.
AROUND THE
CITY
Disregarding orders and not keeping up to the importance of the day, many meat shops in the city remained open and continued to do business. The GHMC officials who were more engrossed in enjoying their public holiday. What is surprising is that meat shops within a stone throw distance from the GHMC zonal offices also remained open and the officials failed to take any action against them. Blaming the government for the failure in implementing the prohibitory orders, TDP Floor Leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy said, “It is very sad that people forget about the importance of this day. I don’t think it is difficult to abstain from meat for one day, and shop keepers wanted to make business on that day too. The lack of awareness among people to keep the sanctity of this day, and the laziness of the officials to take any action is disregarding the sanctity of this day.”
On Monday afternoon, the GHMC officials only raided a few meat shops in Kukatpally and booked cases against the owners. The rest of the areas were not touched. When Postnoon contacted GHMC authorities one of the Assistant Medical Officer said during Gandhi Jayanti selling of meat or fish is not permitted. "There should be no sale of any non-veg food, whether it's chicken, mutton or fish. We have come to know that there is illegal sale of meat in various areas, and the officials in charge were told about it. A few shops were raided in

While GHMC officials failed in it’s directive to enforce the closure of meat shops, so did the police department. Many alcohol shops in the city remained opened after 2 pm. The police, however, raided shops in Hayat Nagar, Vanasthalipuram and LB Nagar and seized the liquor.

The jury had deliberated for three days in Los Angeles, after a trial in which the Jackson family alleged that AEG Live negligently hired and supervised Murray. SMOKEY HOPES
BIG TOBACCO COMPANIES PAUL HANDLEY Agence France Presse WASHINGTON: The former Playboy centerfold strikes a sultry pose in a bar, the sleek black cigarette in her hand and a handsome dude at her side. “I love being single. But here’s what I don’t love: a kiss that tastes like an ashtray. Blecch,” she says. “Now that I’ve switched to blu, I feel better about myself. And I feel free to have one almost anywhere.” Sex and freedom: the slick advertisement for Lorillard’s blu eCigs, starring TV personality Jenny McCarthy, shows how Big Tobacco is pushing into electronic cigarettes. They are seeking to take
command of a market they fear could one day supplant traditional tobacco. In just the past few months British American Tobacco, Lorillard, Reynolds American, Altria and others have launched e-cigarettes, with a message that they can be smoked or “vaped” anywhere that regular cigarettes are banned or disdained. “We see huge potential for this market, both domestically and globally,” said Richard Smith, spokesman for Reynolds American, parent of tobacco powerhouse RJ Reynolds and producer of the VUSE ecigarette, which it recently introduced in Colorado to test the market. “Adult tobacco consumers are making it known that they

want convenient tobacco products they can use in a variety of settings, giving them the freedom to enjoy tobacco on their own terms,” he said. Lorillard’s blu — a brand it bought for $135 million (100 million euros) in April — has stolen a march in the US market on competitors. Altria, parent of Philip Morris, has test-launched its MarkTen in Indiana, and BAT kicked off the Vype across Britain in July. Meanwhile NJOY, an independent with Silicon Valley and Hollywood startup capital, has also carved out significant market space. B o n n i e Herzog, an indus-
try specialist at Wells Fargo Securities, forecasts $2 billion in e-cigarette sales in the United States by the end of this year — two percent of the tobacco market — and $10 billion by 2017. “Consumption of e-cigs could surpass consumption of traditional cigs within the next decade,” she said. Companies say the recognition level of e-cigarettes is already widespread in the United States and Europe. Some 37 percent of smokers in Europe have sampled them. But the takeup rate is still low, and the big tobacco firms say their challenge is to figure out why. “The experience is quite different than a cigarette,” said Des Naughton, man-
THE STATUS EUROPE
Five percent of Europeans have tried the electronic cigarette once or twice, and two percent either use it occasionally or regularly, according to a Eurobarometer poll last year of 26,751 people in the then 27nation European Union. Smokers in Denmark, Greece, Romania and Poland were the most enthusiastic converts. French tobacco addiction specialist Bertrand Dautzenberg says about 23 million Europeans tried the device in 2012, but “this figure probably doubled in 2013”.
TOM HANCOCK Agence France Presse BEIJING: The Chinese inventor who dreamed up the electronic cigarette in a nicotine-induced vision says that despite its global popularity, copycat versions and legal disputes mean he has battled to cash in on his creation. “Smoking is the most unhealthy thing in people’s everyday lives.... I’ve made a big contribution to society,” said Hon Lik, 57, in a cramped office in Beijing, sending tobaccoscented smoke into the air as he puffed on a battery-powered pipe. “But I don’t live like a rich person, because of all the troubles our company has faced.” Hon, a soft-spoken man from northwestern China, is the cofounder of Ruyan, a company which
aging director of Nicoventures, the BAT subsidiary behind Vype. “The product and how it performs is quite different from a cigarette. Obviously there are people who try it and find it’s not for them.” The products available are diverse: disposable and rechargeable, some designed to look like old-fashioned cigarettes and some striving to be different. Some stick to traditional tobacco flavors while others, like blu, explore tastes like those in an ice cream parlor: “Cherry Crush”, “Java Jolt” or “Pina Colada.” “The opportunity remains for companies like ourselves... to understand the potential, the
Use of the e-cig is governed in fragmented fashion by EU states. Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and Slovenia prohibit its use in public places where smoking is also not allowed, Italy and France prohibit its sale to minors and Lithuania bans its sale as a product that imitates tobacco. In Russia, where almost a third of the population smoke cigarettes, the electronic version has not proved a hit. Moscow adopted a law this year to ban tobacco and ecigarette smoking in public places.
has produced electronic cigarettes and cigars — starting at 68 yuan ($11, eight euros) — for more than a decade. His patents are set to be sold in a $75-million deal with Britain’s Imperial Tobacco, but Hon says he will see little of the windfall, and that years of copyright disputes and negative publicity have eroded his profits.
UNITED STATES E-cig sales in the United States multiplied nine-fold from 2010 to 2012, while the number of people who tried them at least once quadrupled from 2009 to 2010, studies have shown. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the gadget’s use had doubled among teenagers from 2011 to 2012, when the number reached 1.78 million. Turnover, says financial services company Wells Fargo, will reach between $1 and $1.7 billion (700 million and 1.3 billion euros) by the end of this year. By comparison, the turnover of the tobacco industry is about $80 billion per year. Regulation differs between US states, but its sale to minors is mostly prohibited. “Vaping”, or inhaling the vapour produced by the battery-powered device, is prohibited on all US planes and trains.
OTHER REGIONS The cigarette has not really caught on in other continents, especially in markets where conventional cigarettes are cheap or anti-tobacco laws are relatively muted. Prohibitions are in place in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Singapore, Thailand, Uruguay and Venezuela.

GUN FOR COOLER E-CIGS a basketball game when you want to,” Dorff says in a TV spot. “We’re all adults here. It’s time we take our freedom back.” The big companies are expected to squeeze aside scores of small e-cigarette pioneers as they push into the market. “There are great advantages to scale in this industry,” said blu’s president Jim Raporte. “Innovation will be a key factor in the success of the players within this space.” The big challenge is regulation. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to propose to regulate ecigarettes like tobacco in the coming weeks. European regulators are trying to determine whether to control them like pharmaceuti-
technology involved, and improve what’s on offer,” said Naughton. ‘You can smoke at a basketball game’ Marketing too is still in infancy. NJOY, in a pioneering television ad during the hugely watched Super Bowl championship in February, emphasized “the look, feel and flavor of the real thing.” Naughton says the focus for BAT is still in enlightening consumers, persuading them to “give it a go.” Blu however has gone the lifestyle route, long a sure winner for cigarettes, emphasizing freedom and fun with McCarthy and actor Stephen Dorff. “With blu, you can smoke at

cals, regular cigarettes, or other products. Regulation could limit distribution, sales and advertising. For instance, tobacco ads have been banned from US television since 1971, but so far e-cigarettes can advertise. Naughton backs regulating them like over-the-counter drugs. But he warned that if ecigarettes face tight controls on testing and review, it could stifle quick product innovation and development. Reynolds’ Smith said they believe the FDA will regulate ecigarettes “based on sound science.” Since Reynolds’ other products compete under strict regulation, he added: “We have no reason to believe that (VUSE) cannot do the same.”
Regulatory cloud hangs over e-cig revolution OLIVIER THIBAULT Agence France Presse PARIS: The electronic cigarette is seducing Europe and America, luring millions away from traditional tar-depositing tobacco with a battery-powered alternative that claims to be satisfying and harmless. And while many smokers have swapped tobacco for a plastic gadget that emits a vapour inhaled like smoke, the “e-cig” faces a threat in Brussels and Washington, where policymakers fret it exploits a legal grey zone. The e-cig claims to mimic the look, feel and flavour of the real thing — minus its tar, ash, smoke and most of its toxins. The gadget contains a liquid that is heated and inhaled as a vapour. The liquid usually has propylene glycol, nicotine and flavourings; there are also nonnicotine versions. E-cigarettes first emerged in China in 2003 as an alternative to tobacco, which is said to kill nearly six million people a year and inflicts tens of billions of dollars annually in health and productivity costs. Smokers, anti-tobacco campaigners, policy advisers and many medical practitioners have hailed the device as a valuable aid to quitting tobacco, whose perils have been known
since the mid-1950s. Others, though, question the e-cigarette’s safety. “Vaping”, as the practice is called, is banned in nearly a dozen countries, led by Latin America, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has “strongly advised” against it. “The potential risks they pose for the health of users remain undetermined,” the UN’s health organ states in guidelines on its website, adding the device’s safety “has NOT been scientifically demonstrated”. European lawmakers want to classify e-cigarettes as medicinal products that can be sold
only in pharmacies like nicotine patches, chewing gum and other tobacco-quitting aids. For now, e-cigs can be sold on the internet or in specialist stores, depending on the country — in some places also in tobacco shops and pharmacies. Opponents say the move to regulate the e-cig as a medicinal product will limit availability, push up prices and force millions of nicotine addicts back to traditional cigarettes. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates tobacco products, is also expected to unveil proposals in October to govern the sale of e-cigarettes.

All that Jazz: Buffaloes get royal treatment at Italian dairy The half-tonne black water buffaloes spend their days lounging on rubber mattresses, munching on organic hay or looking forward to cooling off in vaporised showers. DARIO THUBURN Agence France Presse CAPACCIO: A queue forms for rubdowns as jazz piano tinkles out of the speakers: some of the best buffalo mozzarella in the world starts with in-stable VIP treatment. Ducky, Sweety and Lady lumber towards the sound system, attracted to the smooth Keith Jarrett licks at the exclusive Tenuta Vannulo dairy in southern Italy. “The music helps them produce more milk because the animal feels more relaxed,” said 25-year-old Valentina Michelucci, a tousle-haired stable hand, who said she wants to try out some disco hits too. “They’re very curious when they hear it.” The half-tonne black water buffaloes spend their days lounging on rubber mattresses, munching on organic hay or looking forward to vaporised showers that form a fine cooling mist from overhead pipes. When they feel the urge, they saunter into a special pen for automatic milking by a unique machine that knows the exact shape of each udder thanks to a code emitted by the electronic collars the buffaloes wear. Or they can head to large round brushes that twist into action when the animals come into contact with them, providing a soothing back and shoulders massage. “Animals have to be treated well to produce stress-free milk,” Antonio Palmieri, owner of the 500-acre farm, told AFP in an interview. The dapper Palmieri, wearing a panama hat, a collarless linen shirt and loafers, is seen as a pioneer for environmentally sustainable buffalo dairies. “They can’t speak for themselves so it’s up to us to understand how they want to be cared for,” he said, sitting in a manicured garden next to his three stables, which house 500 buffaloes. The farm sells around 300 kilogrammes of mozzarella per day for 13 euros a kilo. There’s just one catch: If you want it, you have to drive to the farm, 50 kilometres south of Salerno, to buy it, as Palmieri does not bother with distribution — or marketing, for that matter. Business is brisk anyway, thanks to the dairy’s word-of-mouth fame and international reputation among jet-setting buffalo milk aficionados. Around 45,000 customers visited the on-site farm shop in August alone. On a recent visit by AFP, dozens of cars were in the parking lot and a group of German tourists were touring the farm. Business has boomed despite Italy’s economic crisis.
“You can really taste the buffalo milk. It’s a bit far away, but it’s worth it!” said one customer from Salerno, Anna Orzano, clutching her bag of ricotta and mozzarella. The staple remains mozzarella but Vannulo also make a range of buffalo milk-based products including yoghurt, ice cream and, starting next year, chocolate. A workshop on the farm even produces buffalo-leather handbags and belts, and Palmieri said he plans to open a restaurant serving up buffalo steaks. Vannulo’s “is widely regarded as the best mozzarella,” said Piero Sardo, president of the Foundation for Biodiversity at Slow Food, an Italy-based international gourmet and eco-friendly farming group.
‘MILK IS NOT SIMPLE’
AROUND THE
WORLD
“The well-being of animals is an important issue,” said Sardo, a cheese expert, although he admitted that the link between better treatment and tastier milk was scientifically “difficult to prove”. The history of buffalo dairying in Italy has been traced to the 12th century, but it remained a mainly local affair until relatively recently because of the difficulties in refrigerating the milk. Before the 1980s, most dairies in the region were small producers like Vannulo. But in recent years, buffalo mozzarella has gone international and is now prized in the best restaurants from Dubai to Moscow to Sydney. The coveted cheese sells for 30 euros a kilo in Russia. Expansion has brought problems too, including reports of large imports into Italy of buffalo milk from Central and Eastern Europe and the use of frozen or powdered milk. But Domenico Raimondo, head of Italy’s buffalo mozzarella consortium, which tries to enforce strict rules on the sector, said a return to the local market like Vannulo would be “anti-economic”. From Vannulo’s stables, the porcelainwhite milk is poured into large vats for curdling. Its high water content is filtered off before a team of three workers begin transforming it into mozzarella. “Milk is not simple, it is a living thing,” said Donato Brinca, 46, chief cheesemaker, as he stirred the milk into a paste and kneaded it to make mozzarella. “A good mozzarella needs to have a sweet taste and a hint of hazelnut,” he said. The lip-smacking result is a tough sell for the diet-conscious. Fresh buffalo milk is about 8 per cent fat — more than twice as much as cow’s milk. Palmieri, whose family has been rearing livestock for generations, conceded: “Buffalo mozzarella is definitely tastier, but it’s not exactly dietary.”

ASIAN SHARES MOSTLY HIGHER DESPITE US CRISIS
Asian markets mostly rose on Thursday but eyes remain fixed on the budget gridlock in Washington that has shut down the federal government as President Barack Obama warned Wall Street over the crisis.

TALKS BREAK DOWN
The breakdown ensured that the United States heads into a third day of a dramatic government spending freeze Thursday, with no end in sight and the economy in peril. STEPHEN COLLINSON feedback@postnoon.com WASHINGTON: Talks between an exasperated President Barack Obama and top Republicans failed to end a government shutdown, with both sides accusing the other of refusing to negotiate. The breakdown ensured that the United States heads into a third day of a dramatic government spending freeze Thursday, with no end in sight and the economy in peril. Ramping up tensions, Obama had sent Wall Street a blunt warning that the political crisis that has paralyzed the federal government could yet trigger a US catastrophic debt default. But when he met for more than an hour with Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, there was no sign of a breakthrough. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers home, museums and national parks are shut, much scientific research is on hold and the shutdown is now threatening already sluggish economic growth. "The president reiterated one more time that he will not negotiate," Boehner said, emerging empty-handed into a warm Washington night to address reporters after the West Wing talks. On that point at least, the two sides agreed. Obama said in an interview with CNBC that he would not negotiate on budget matters until Republicans had passed a bill to reopen the government and raise the $16.7 trillion-dollar US debt ceiling. The cap must be raised within two weeks or

US House Minority Leader Rep Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) speaks to the media as US Senate Majority Leader Sen Harry Reid (D-NV) (Center R) listens, after a meeting with fellow Congressional leaders and US President Barack Obama.
Washington could default on its government debt and payments for the first time, result that could hurt the credit rating of the world's largest economy. After the talks, Obama's spokesman Jay Carney issued a statement saying that his boss still hoped "common sense" will prevail. Senate Democrats have repeatedly blocked Republican House funding bills that seek to dismantle or delay Obama's signature health care reform bill, widely known as "Obamacare." The impasse left the government without a budget for the new fiscal year, and the shutdown with go into a third day on Thursday. Reid emerged from the talks complaining at Boehner's atti-
tude, and vowed never to allow Republicans to overturn the health care law. "We are locked in tight on Obamacare," Reid said. In his CNBC interview, Obama reached his opponents to directly address the already nervous financial community. This time's different Obama was asked whether Washington was simply gripped by just the latest in a series of political and fiscal crises which reliably get solved at the last minute. In unusually frank comments on issues that could sway markets, Obama warned that investors should be worried. "This time's different. I think they should be concerned," he said.
"When you have a situation in which a faction is willing potentially to default on US government obligations, then we are in trouble." Obama said he would not negotiate until lawmakers pass a temporary financing bill and raise the debt ceiling, but that after that he would be "prepared to have a reasonable, civil negotiation around a whole slew of issues." The president warned it would set a terrible precedent to allow lawmakers of any party to hold a White House to ransom over the government's borrowing limit. "Absolutely I am exasperated, because this is entirely unnecessary," Obama said. Hopes of an early exit to the shutdown are fading.

CIGGY LIGHTERS FADE OUT SEOUL: Hyundai Motor said it would stop putting cigarette lighter sockets in cars made for the domestic market in favour of a USB power point. The South Korean auto giant said its decision would affect all passenger cars and SUVs sold at home from this month. A company spokesman said it was "the first auto company" to make the change. He said the company would survey consumers in other countries to see whether the change should be adopted elsewhere. Hyundai's decision followed a domestic survey that showed many drivers used the lighter jack to charge mobile phones.

‘Shield’ law prompts soul-searching by news media ROB LEVER Agence France-Presse
A
media “shield” law being debated in the US Congress, in a bid to protect reporters with confidential sources, has divided journalists and free-speech advocates. Earlier this year, the White House lent its backing to legislation aimed at strengthening the rights of journalists, after a political firestorm over the government’s seizure of reporters’ phone logs. The proposal — which aims to allow journalists to protect their sources from law enforcement — initially drew praise from journalists and organisations. But some have second thoughts now. A bill approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee and pending in the full Senate, offers protection for “persons connected with the news media” who are served with subpoenas or other court orders seeking unpublished information. But some reporters and media watchdogs say the bill, however well-intentioned, may not help journalists protect their sources, and might even erode press freedoms. “A shield law for journalists might seem like a good idea, but it isn’t — it’s actually a terrible idea,” says Matthew Ingram, a senior writer for the tech news site GigaOm, writing on the affiliated blog Paid Content. “What it really does is allow the government to define who gets to be a journalist and who doesn’t. And that’s dangerous.”
HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS Indulgence redefined! A gold-plated, diamond encrusted Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4, tourbillion timepiece with over 4,144 diamonds, finely jewelled travel spray, and the world’s first gold-plated iPhone 5s were some of the things hosted in the palatial Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi, at the third World Luxury Expo.

ebates about the differences between men and women have been around as long as men, women and corrupt politicians have existed…eternity. In just about every aspect of life one can find a way to argue which of the two sexes is superior and why; medicine, law, parenting, cooking, telling jokes. Then there are those where it’s clearly obvious that women and men are different and they not only embrace these differences but proclaim it to be the appropriate response or action. In a conversation regarding work, several of us started talking about the dreaded task of waking up in the morning (both parties equally agreed that neither are fond of it). However, it got interesting when I discovered a co-worker gets up an hour earlier than I do so she can get ready for work. I always knew women (usually) take longer to get ready than men so this wasn’t too big of a surprise. What was surprising was when she heard that I often got out of bed at 7.30am and was at work before 8.00, and this after my shower. “There’s no way you shower in the morning?” she stated. I realised why she came to this conclusion (no, I don’t smell). So I broke it down for her.
A guy’s shower should have two things — soap and shampoo. Anything more than that and he might lose his Man Card. If you got toothpaste and shaving equipment there, that’s fine, but other than that, a man doesn’t need anything else. So showering is simple and timely, water + soap + water = done. This includes scrubbing those ‘hard to reach places’. Unless you are obese and need to lift up fat rolls, most places are not that very hard to reach. So that’s
it, I really don’t think there is much that really needs to be done. Yes, you can sit under a hot shower, relax while listening to Miley Cyrus, I mean Metallica, and exfoliate your pores, but really, who has the time for all that these days. After explaining it to her I tried to figure out why she thought two minutes was not enough time to take a shower — silly me, trying to figure out women. Then I realised why two minutes might seem
improbable. According to the United Nations’ Things You Must Have In Your Bathroom Convention held at Bath and Body Works, a resolution was unanimously passed by the Security Council that each women’s bathroom should have the following item: two loufa sponges — one must be on a stick for those hard to reach places, one shampoo to make your hair curly, and shampoo to make your hair straight, one shampoo that smells like a fruit that is red in colour, one conditioner to give your hair volume and definition, one body scrub that contains mango and sand (don’t try to taste it; it taste nothing like it smells, trust me), one face soap made from cucumber but cost 50 times more than if you had just rubbed fresh cucumber on your face, three different types of soap, one fruit, one vegetable, and one of a purple flower. It is absolutely necessary that you use a minimum of 75 per cent of these products each time you take a bath or else the world’s economy will collapse. Seriously, I’m going to go shower now.
EDITORIALS Multi-pollutant crisis in Hyderabad
A
study commissioned by the Centre for Science and Environment to study pollution levels in major cities across the country has found that Hyderabad faces an unprecedented multi-pollutant crisis. Not just nitrogen oxides and particulate matter that cause pollution, but also high levels of toxic benzene is in the City’s air. Even tier-II cities in the state such as Guntur and Vijayawada also experience high levels of pollution. Levels of particulate matter in areas like Uppal, Balanagar, Charminar and Paradise junction have been officially classified as ‘critical,’ while it remains ‘extremely high’ in other areas like Tarnaka. The environment ministry should address the issue as 47 per cent of the air pollution in the City is caused by vehicles, while the remaining can be attributed to sources like industries. The AP Pollution Control Board has recorded dust pollution levels at 87 micrograms per cubic metre, exceeding the permissible level of 60 micrograms per cubic metre. Bad roads contributing to air pollution also need immediate attention.

Saving the certificate
I
t comes as a relief that the Finance Ministry and the RBI will launch inflation-indexed saving certificates for retail investors to protect savings of the poor and middleclass people from inflation, and offer them an alternative of investment in gold. These securities should be designed to provide returns in excess of inflation. The government should not add on to its interest burdens but raise government securities at lower interest and balance additional burden with these certificates.

tELEVISION SEXUAL AWAKENING
The science of sex
Masters of Sex carefully balances itself without becoming unreasonably dirty or even drily academic. It’s sex in its purest form. SANA MIRZA sana.m@postnoon.com
I
f you are wondering whether there is a deeper meaning to Showtime’s latest offering, Masters of Sex, then stop thinking so hard. It’s what the title suggests. It’s packed with sex, entertainment and some more sex. This does not mean that viewers will/should/are going to be using the show as a form of surrogate pornography. The show will whiplash you into taking sex seriously (which makes things clear about how YouTube’s antiboob rule didn’t apply here) and view it only as a clinical infer-
ence. Wind back a scene and you may observe it only for study purposes. Ahem. Masters of Sex which aired on September 29, 2013 reveals the fascinating story from the 1950s about the “explosive” findings of sexologist Dr William Masters and his assistant-turned-partner, and later wife Virginia Johnson. Based on the book of the same name by Thomas Maier, the show explores the science behind human intimacy which debunks longstanding misconceptions about sexual behaviour. In the series, Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) takes the title role of Masters, a rather peculiar per-
sonality who is trying to build his study around understanding sexual behaviour in humans. His personal life, however, is completely the opposite. Masters is unable to conceive a child with his wife Libby (Caitlin Fitzgerald) which creates a

rather tense atmosphere on the personal front. Living in denial, Masters brushes his own shortcomings under the carpet while Libby who may not even be infertile is made to undergo several, painful treatments. As part of his “work”, as he repeatedly justifies to his wife, Masters even hides in a closet at a brothel to watch a prostitute have sex with a man. The same prostitute, Betty, suggests that he should get an assistant to assist him in his study at the hospital. Enter Virginia “Ginny” Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), a onetime singer, twice divorced with two children, whose views on sex are best served, impeccably
raw. Her unruliness drives Masters mad but he knows he needs her — in more ways than one, even if Masters fails to admit it with his unscathed emotions. Created by Michael Ashford, the show puts forth a thoughtprovoking and titillating new series, complete with complicated characters and lots of sex, in an era where openly engaging in a discussion about sex always attracted a glare. What Masters and John find together is what keeps you intrigued, but the drama needs to evolve eventually in the later part of the series for the show to secure a fan following.

Pregnant woman’s weight gain linked to kid’s obesity A
study has suggested that women who gain excessive weight in pregnancy are more likely to have overweight and obese children. The findings, published in the US journal PLoS Medicine, suggested pregnancy may be “an especially important time” to prevent obesity in the next generation, Xinhua reported. Researchers from Boston Children’s Hospital looked at 41,133 mothers with two or more children to find out whether childhood obesity was resultant because of the conditions during pregnancy or other factors, such as diet and genes, also played a role. They linked the birth records of mothers with two or more children to school records that included the child’s body mass index (BMI) at an average age of 11.9
years, and then made statistical comparisons between siblings. The researchers feel comparing siblings minimises the conventional sources of confounding, because on average, siblings have
the same relative distribution of obesity genes, the same home environment and same socioeconomic and demographic influences. The study showed that for each kilogramme of weight gain during pregnancy, the body mass index of a child at age 12 increased by 0.02 kg per square metre. “Excessive pregnancy weight gain may make a significant contribution to the obesity epidemic,” senior author David Ludwig, director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital, said in a statement. The researchers, however, noted that additional research was needed to learn how best to advise pregnant women on managing their weight in pregnancy. IANS

Technology EVOLUTION
Internet meets fashion
GLENN CHAPMAN Agence France Presse
M
odels wearing Google Glass eyewear, Pebble smartwatches and other hot gadgets strutted a catwalk late Monday as Internet technology continued to merge with the world of fashion. A Digital Fall fashion show here marked the close of the first Glazed Conference devoted to setting the stage for wearable computing startups to become billion-dollar businesses. "It looks like technology for the sake of technology is dead," said Eliane Fiolet, co-founder of popular technology news website Ubergizmo.com and organizer of the fashion show. "People want a great piece of technology that works well and looks great." Companies are increasingly tuning into desires for sophisticated gadgets that also let people express personal styles, she noted. Jawbone lets people customize colors of Jambox wireless speakers that synch wirelessly to smartphones, tablets, or laptop computers. Nike allows people visiting its website to design their own ahtletic shoes, and matches some sports attire with wearable devices that track daily active for those chasing fitness goals. She believed that Google has

"We are in the next stage of human evolution," said Glazed Conference organizer Redg Snodgrass, co-founder of Stained Glass Labs startup accelerator devoted to revving
up the wearable computing industry. "Entrepreneurs aren't those nerds living in a closet anymore," Snodgrass said as the fashion show was about to commence in a club not far from Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco. "They are out there pushing the limit. Anything that is technologically fascinating is sexy, and fashion is tied to that." While fitness has been a winning theme for early wearable computing devices, such as UP and Fitbit bracelets for providing feedback on whether people are hitting activity and sleep goals, Snodgrass thinks films and games will be the next areas to catch fire. The one-day Glazed
Conference was intended to bring together entrepreneurs, investors and others to explore ways to realize ideas and make money in the world of wearable computing. Among the attendees was self-described 'cybertechnician' Tyler Freeman, who sported Drum Pants lined with sensors that let him play percussion beats by slapping various spots on his legs. The sensor strips are held in place with Velcro, meaning they can be swapped between pieces of a wardrobe, he explained. "The goal is to get banned in public schools; then we know we are a success," said the San Francisco-based entrepreneur. Tapping on Drum Pants sends signals wirelessly to smartphones, which then direct thumps or synthesised sounds to come from speakers. The sensors could be used to control PowerPoint presentations or Google Glass cameras with casual touches of a leg, according to Freeman. Fiolet already has her sites set on next year's show, with hopes of being able to showcase creations of London-based CuteCircuit, the cyber chic fashion house that wowed the world with a "Twitter Dress" worn by a celebrity to a 4G mobile network launch event in Britain in late 2012. LED lights designed into the gown displayed posts from the messaging service.
US WARY OF DISCLOSURE WASHINGTON: A request by major technology firms to disclose more about US intelligence services' data requests would "cause serious harm to national security," the government said in a court filing. The Justice Department, responding to petitions from major US Internet firms, said it opposes the move for more transparency in the role of the companies in vast data collection programs. The requests "would permit damaging disclosures that would reveal sources and methods of surveillance potentially nationwide," said the filing to the US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
BANGLADESH GOES ATOMIC DHAKA: Energy-starved Bangladesh inaugurated the opening phase of work for its first ever nuclear power plant using Russian technology. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the Rooppur nuclear power plant in the country's northwest, which will have two 1,000 megawatt reactors costing up to $4 billion. The impoverished South Asian nation signed a deal in November 2011 with the Russian state-owned nuclear giant Rosatom to build the power station.
OBAMACARE’S GLITCHES WASHINGTON: A key stage of President Barack Obama's health care reform law hit a stumbling block Tuesday when millions of people flocked to browse online insurance but were frustrated by technical glitches. The launch of healthcare.gov went ahead despite a US government shutdown incited by Republicans opposed to the law, and Obama vowed that six in 10 people could find insurance there for less than $100 per month. But many of the 2.8 million users the government reported having counted for the day were blocked from entering the site due to heavy traffic.

rt met fashion on the Paris catwalk as designer Karl Lagerfeld conjured up a vast modern art gallery full of Chanel-inspired works as the backdrop to his latest collection. The walls of Lagerfeld’s gallery — built inside Paris’s Grand Palais — were dotted with abstract works, some already in demand from real art galleries. Paintings bore the famous Chanel logo while sculptures included a classic black quilted handbag suspended upside down with its chain trailing on the
ground. Singer Katy Perry was among those on the front row along with fashion photographer Mario Testino and model Ines de La Fressange. On the catwalk, colour took centre stage with silk print dresses inspired by an antique German paint chart and suits that came in the usual flattering shapes but with plenty of modern detail for spring/summer 2014. Other looks that stood out included pink knit dresses and loose black trousers with a wide black and pink woven knit around the waist.
Following on from the “stocking boot” of Lagerfeld’s earlier 2013 collections, footwear consisted of woolly socks attached to black and white patent leather court shoes. Speaking afterwards, Lagerfeld highlighted the collection’s “jackets with no front, sleeveless dresses looking like suits... and prints (with) over 150 colours”. The designer said he had wanted to create a sense of light-heartedness. “There should be a relationship between fashion and art because art shouldn’t take itself too seriously and fashion either,” he said.

MARC JACOBS IS LEAVING LOUIS VUITTON
MARC JACOBS is leaving Louis Vuitton to focus on his own label as it heads towards an IPO. The news was confirmed by LVMH chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault this morning, following the show, and brings an end to the designer's 16-year-long tenure at the brand.
“So it’s about a kind of likeness between the two, like in the days of Andy Warhol — he was the only one who saw that fashion and art could go well together. After that they became too serious,” he said. Art galleries had already been in touch about many of the works created for the set, Lagerfeld said, adding however that they were not for sale. The Chanel show came on the penultimate day of the Paris collections. Nine days of ready-to-wear fashion shows for spring/summer 2014 are due to wrap up on

Wednesday. The highlight of the final day is expected to be Marc Jacobs’ show for Louis Vuitton amid speculation it could be the last of his 16-year tenure at the French luxury brand. Industry journal Women Wear’s Daily on Monday reported that contract negotiations between Jacobs and Louis Vuitton and its parent company, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, could see Jacobs call time on the collaboration to concentrate on his signature brand, possibly with an initial public offering.
It said that Jacobs would need to be fully focused on his own brand in order to ensure the highest possible valuation for any eventual IPO. Louis Vuitton, meanwhile, is understood to have held talks with former Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere about succeeding Jacobs as artistic director, sources told the journal. AFP

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

WEDDING RUMOURS
JOLIE’S double rings spark secret wedding rumours H as Angelina Jolie followed in the footsteps of stealthy brides Kerry Washington, Blake Lively and Zoe Saldana? Rumors are swirling that the actress has secretly tied the knot with Brad Pitt. The speculation stems from recent photos of Jolie wearing a new ring on her wedding finger. The Maleficent star rocked the lighter band while shopping with her children in Bondi Beach, Australia. The Oscar winner has been wearing the other gold band on her left ring finger since March. Jolie, 38, and Pitt, 49, announced their engagement in April 2012 after seven years of dating. The Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-stars have downplayed wedding talks in the press ever since. “We get a lot of pressure from the kids,” Pitt told E! News in November 2012. “We didn’t realize how much it meant to them.” This isn’t the first time Jolie and Pitt have been the subjects of wedding rumors. The mom of six most recently shot down reports in March, flatly telling reporters her gold band is “not” a wedding ring.

PRIX DE L'ARC DE TRIOMPHE
Dettori out with injury Jockey Frankie Dettori will miss his ride in Europe's most prestigious race after suffering an injury.
LONDON: Italian jockey Frankie Dettori will miss his ride in Europe's most prestigious race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, on Sunday after suffering a season-ending injury, his business manager said Wednesday. The 42-year-old Dettori, long based in Britain, had to be helped off the track in a wheelchair after a fall before a race at Nottingham, central England, earlier Wednesday. Peter Burrell, Dettori's business manager, said his client would miss both the Arc at Longchamp, near Paris, and the remainder of the European flat season. "It's bad news, not good news," Burrell said in a statement issued to Britain's Press Association. "He (Dettori) went to Cambridge Hospital and Xrays found that he had suffered a fractured ankle. "He was extremely disappointed on the phone and did not want to discuss it much more than that. "It's an extremely painful injury. Sunday is out - as is the season." Dettori was due to partner leading contender Treve in the Arc -- a race he has won three times and in which he has competed in the last 25 editions. At Nottingham, he was unshipped from Eland Ally prior to the 32Red.com Handicap and was unable to put any weight on his right leg as he attempted to get to his feet.

Despite the course doctor feeling an X-ray was unnecessary, Dettori decided to have one of his own. Had Dettori won the Arc this weekend, he would have equalled the record for most wins in Europe's premier all-age horse race by a jockey of four. The ride on Treve -- unbeaten in her four starts including impressive wins in the French Oaks and the Group One Arc trial the Prix Vermeille a fortnight ago -- has brightened up a trying year for Dettori. He served a six month suspension for testing positive for cocaine -- he failed the test at the Arc trials last year -- but picked up the lucrative contract with Sheikh Joann al-Thani, younger brother of Qatar's emir, at the end of June. The sheikh bought Treve after her win in the French Oaks for a reported 7million euros ($9.4million dollars) and the filly is seen as the likeliest threat to Japanese favourite Orfevre. WORLD CUP
‘India favourites to retain title’ DUBAI: With exactly 500 days to go before the first ball is bowled in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, batting wizard Sachin Tendulkar has predicted that the trophy will remain in the subcontinent and India are favourites to retain the title. Tendulkar, who along with Pakistan’s Javed Miandad is the only player to play in six World Cups, hoped that if Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side successfully defended the title, then it will once again provide tremendous joy to the nation while making it only the third country after the West Indies and Australia to win back-to-back titles. “Along with India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are also good
sides,” said the champion batsman, adding: “I am partial towards India and want them to do well. That would be really exciting. It will give so much happiness to the entire nation. “That is something I would want, along with a billion plus people who will also be expecting the same thing to happen,” Tendulkar said in an ICC release Wednesday. The Indian icon retired from ODI cricket in December 2012 as the leading run-getter with 18,426 runs. Tendulkar had a lion’s share in India’s historic victory in Mumbai in April, 2011 when he finished as his side’s top scorer with 482 runs from nine matches.

India, which leads the Reliance ICC ODI rankings table by a distance, has been drawn in Pool B and will open its campaign against Pakistan in Adelaide Feb 15. Tendulkar, who is also the highest run-getter in the history of ICC Cricket World Cup with 2,278 runs from 45 matches (1,195 runs more than Miandad), hoped India players will quickly adjust to the conditions in Australia and New Zealand. “Well I think most of our guys have been to Australia. They know what to expect, (as) they have played there already,’’ said Tendulkar who was part of the squad that toured Australia in 2011-12. IANS
BOXING
USA takes a jab at Tyson NEW YORK CITY: Mike Tyson's signing of a US teen amateur boxing star to a professional contract has sparked verbal jabs from USA Boxing president Charles Butler after losing a top Olympic prospect. Former world heavyweight champion Tyson, now a fight promoter, signed Erickson Lubin on Tuesday, the young prospect's 18th birthday, according to a Twitter posting by the fighter, who said, 'My pro career starts now." Butler wrote an open letter to Tyson asking him to stop trying to lure Olympic prospects into the pro ranks. "You are offering these athletes pennies on the dollar of what they could be worth with an Olympic medal or even potentially just being an Olympian," Butler wrote to Tyson. "You are also undermining the next United States Olympic boxing team in the process." USA Boxing said it will seek action from lawmakers to stop "professional promoters from attempting to sign athletes in the Olympic pipeline." No US boxers won Olympic medals at London last year and the lone medal from 2008 at Beijing was a bronze by Deontay Wilder. Not since reigning super-middleweight world champion Andre Ward won Athens gold in 2004 has a US male fighter collected gold. Lubin had been offered a residency training program spot at the US Olympic training center in Colorado, all at no cost, whereas his pro training figures to be financed by future fight income. AFP

PRESIDENTS CUP PREVIEW
Rookies boost Cup morale: Scott
JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse
COLUMBUS: World number two Adam Scott feels rejuvenated about the Presidents Cup, with seven newcomers helping bring a relaxed but determined mentality to the Internationals squad against the United States. The Masters champion from Australia will be paired alongside Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama against Bill Haas and Webb Simpson when the biennial matches begin Thursday at Muirfield Village. “It has been very relaxed, but I think the mood is good,” Scott said after Wednesday’s final practice round. “Seven guys have never been here before and they are extremely excited and we can feel that and we’re using some of their enthusiasm for team morale.” The Americans own a 7-1-1 edge in the all-time rivalry, the only Internationals win coming in 1998 at Australia. Scott has had enough of being thumped by US rivals and said as much before the event, saying the Internationals needed to start winning to make the event competitive. “It’s really important for the Internationals to get a win,” Scott said. “We need to make this thing really relevant. It has got a bit lopsided the last few outings.

“We have got a team that can win this week, but the only way we can do it is by playing good and wanting it more than the Americans. “The last few days have been about building our spirit and our feeling to the point where we want it badly.” That grit blends newcomers
and veterans alike around a single goal. “Everyone is determined,” Scott said. “The guys who have not been here want to start on the right foot and the guys who have played in several want to turn this around and get a win. “I see seven guys here for the first time pumped up and ready
to go and that is giving me a great feeling about the Presidents Cup after having as run of some really big defeats. The atmosphere in our room is great this year. “Everyone is coming in determined to put ourselves in front and try and win as many sessions as we can.”
n 12:55 (16:55): Jason Dufner/Zach Johnson (USA) v Richard Sterne (RSA)/Branden Grace (RSA) (Internationals) That effort starts with Thursday’s six four-ball matches, in which Internationals captain Nick Price counts on Scott’s experience to steady Matsuyama, 21, in his first pro pairs match. “It’s a strong pairing we’ve got. I think we’re expecting to win points together,” Scott said.
CHINA OPEN
Nadal, Li, Radwanska through NEIL CONNOR Agence France-Presse BEIJING: Rafael Nadal’s bid to return to the top of the world rankings remained on course Wednesday as he progressed to the quarter-finals of the China Open, overcoming stubborn resistance from Philipp Kohlschreiber. The current world number two could return to the top spot for the first time since July 2011 if he reaches the final in Beijing, and he moved a step closer following his 6-4, 7-6(7/3) victory. But his German opponent ensured the second seed Spaniard had to dig deep to ensure his passage to the last

eight in a game that lasted 1 hour 55 minutes. Nadal took an early 2-0 lead before being pegged back at 33. But he took the first set by breaking Kohlschreiber’s serve in the final game. The intense competition continued into the second set, where neither opponent broke serve, forcing the tie-break. Nadal could unseat Novak Djokovic from the top spot, no matter what the Serb does in the competition. He will face Fabio Fognini in the quarter-finals, after the Italian ruthlessly swept aside Australia’s former world number one Lleyton Hewitt in a crushing 6-0, 6-2 defeat.
In the women’s tournament, Li Na’s bid to claim her first major tournament on home soil remained on course as she progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki. The home crowd favourite dumped out her German opponent 7-5, 6-4 in a cool-headed display of efficiency at a packed National Tennis Centre in Beijing. Meanwhile, world number four Agnieszka Radwanska had earlier powered through to the third round with a convincing victory over American teenager Madison Keys defeating her 6-3, 6-2.

T&T beat CSK, in semis The Caribbean side will now face Mumbai Indians in the second semifinal while the Super Kings take on Rajasthan Royals.
NEW DELHI: Trinidad and Tobago eased into the Champions League Twenty20 semifinals beating Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets to top Group B at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Wednesday. Trinidad and Tobago achieved their first objective as they bowled out Chennai Super Kings for 118 in 19.4 overs after putting them in to bat. In response, they chased down the target in 15.1 overs. The Caribbean side will now face Mumbai Indians in the second semifinal here Saturday while CSK take on Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur Friday.
Openers Lendl Simmons (63) and Evin Lewis (38) gave a solid start to Trinidad and Tobago’s chase, striking a 79-run partnership.

Openers Lendl Simmons (63) and Evin Lewis (38) gave a solid start to their chase, striking a 79-run partnership. After the in-form Lewis was caught in front of the stumps by part time bowler Suresh Raina, Simmons continued his onslaught. The right hand bat Simmons anchored the innings with his 41-ball knock which included five fours and four sixes while Darren Bravo (11 not
out) saw the team home. There was not much to talk about the Super Kings’ bowling as only Raina and Ravichandran Ashwin managed to clinch a wicket each. Earlier, the Super Kings batsmen were really not in their elements as they collapsed for a measly 118 with only three of their batsman getting into double figures. It was more of dismal batting from the two-time Indian Premier
Not concerned about Sachin’s form: Rohit NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma said he was not worried about his teammate Sachin Tendulkar’s form, after the batting great got out without scoring against the Perth Scorchers at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Wednesday. Tendulkar has scored 15, 5 and 0 in the three Champions League Twenty20 games he has played so far, a poor performance by the 40-year-old. “I am not concerned about his form as he is hitting the ball well. Unfortunately, he got out without scoring today. I don’t think we need to worry about him. A batsman of his experience can come good anytime he wants to. Hopefully, he will play a big knock in the semifinals,” Sharma said of Tendulkar, who will probably play his last T20 game Saturday. Chasing 150 in 14.2 overs to qualify for the last four, Sharma said that they had decided to go after the bowling right from the start.

Only opener Murali Vijay (27), skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (25) and Raina (38) showed some potential in the otherwise drab batting show by the 2010 CLT20 champions. Pacers Ravi Rampaul and Lendl Simmons clinched two wickets each as all-rounder Rayad Emrit took three with his medium pace. IANS
MI cruise into next round
NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians outclassed Perth Scorchers by six wickets at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Wednesday, ensuring three of the four Champions League Twenty20 semifinalists will be Indian sides. Chasing 150 in 20 overs, the reigning Indian Premier League (IPL) champions needed to reach home in 14.2 overs to qualify for the last four stage. Opener Dwayne Smith (48) and skipper Rohit Sharma (51 not out) led from the front as the team romped home in 13.2 overs at a whopping run rate of 11.4 in a Group A clash. West Indian Smith took off brilliantly, hammering 11 runs off the first over. A packed house on a national holiday (Gandhi Jayanti) wanted to see batting legend Sachin Tendulkar provide some sparks but he failed, getting caught for a duck as he flicked one to deep square leg. However, Smith’s 25-ball knock increased the decibel levels in the stadium as he sent the Scorchers bowlers on a leather hunt, smashing five fours and three sixes. He was well supported by Sharma who played a responsible 24-ball knock, hitting the poor deliveries into the stands and showing due respect to the good balls. After Smith’s dismissal, Kieron Pollard hit a brilliant 18-ball 23-run cameo while Sharma continued drubbing the Perth bowlers, finishing with three boundaries and four sixes. Middle order batsman Ambati Rayudu hit two sixes of the last two deliveries to seal the tie. IANS
ASHES
Clarke in doubt for opener
SYDNEY: Australian captain Michael Clarke on Thursday admitted he may not be fit for the first Ashes Test against England next month, with his long-standing back problem needing extended treatment and rest. Clarke was ruled out of Australia’s one-day tour of India this month and while desperate to be ready for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane on November 21, the star batsman is pragmatic. “Where I sit right now is I don’t know when I’ll be back playing cricket,” he said. “We have no idea how long it’s going to take. “There’s certainly no guarantee (for the first Test) at this stage. It’s hard for me to say that because I’m trying my best not to look at it like that. “I’m always positive and if they ask me, I’ll say I’ll be fit in a week’s time. But you ask Alex (Kountouris, team physio) who
knows me very well, and he’d say there’d be doubt I won’t be right.” Clarke has been plagued by back problems for years and they flared up again before Australia’s final ODI in Southampton last month at the end of a gruelling five-Test Ashes tour to England, which Australia lost 3-0. He played in that game, but selectors were reluctant to take any more risks given the big home summer coming up, and ruled him out of the India tour, with Kountouris warning of an “extensive rehabilitation period

before returning to competitive cricket”. Coach Darren Lehmann said all he could do was hope Clarke would be fit to face arch-rivals England, who are bidding to
win a fourth straight Ashes series — something they last achieved in the 19th Century. “I hope he improves his back pretty quickly,” Lehmann said. “(The Ashes) is a long way off so hopefully with all the medicos behind him getting it right he should be right. “But only time will tell. I can’t worry about that. What I can worry about is making sure all the other players are ready to go as well... getting the right side for the first Test match.” In a further blow, fast bowler James Pattinson also revealed he had no hope of being fit for Brisbane as he battles a back stress fracture, with the third Test in Perth seen as his likely earliest return. “I won’t be back for the first Test. I don’t think I’ll be right for the second,” said Pattinson, who broke down after the Lord’s Test in July. AFP

Bayern outclass Man City
Playing in England for the first time since their victory over Borussia Dortmund in last season’s final, Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich, gave Manchester City a lesson in relentless attacking to take control of Group D. TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse MANCHESTER: Defending champions Bayern Munich proved they remain the team to beat in the Champions League with a classy 3-1 win at Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. Playing in England for the first time since their victory over Borussia Dortmund in last season’s final, Pep Guardiola’s side gave City a lesson in relentless attacking to take control of Group D. A goalkeeping error from Joe Hart helped Franck Ribery give the visitors a seventh-minute lead and they added further goals from Thomas Mueller and Arjen Robben in the second half. Substitute Alvaro Negredo replied in the 80th minute, before former City player Jerome Boateng saw red for a last-man foul on Yaya Toure, but on the ground where they had crushed derby rivals Manchester United just 10 days ago, City were deservedly beaten. Victory sent Bayern three points clear at the top of the group and consigned City to a first home defeat in Europe since 2008, four days on from an unexpected 3-2 loss at Aston Villa. Late blow forces draw
DONETSK: Brazilian striker Taison’s goal 14 minutes from time denied Manchester United a second successive win in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday as Shakhtar Donetsk grabbed a 1-1 draw. The draw — which sees Shakhtar remain unbeaten at home to English teams — leaves both sides unbeaten after two games with four points. The point — United took the lead through Danny Welbeck early in the first-half — will ease some of the pressure on manager David Moyes, whose side have made their worst start to a league season since 1989. “That was a good point coming
here and getting one isn’t easy,” said Moyes, who was handed the unenviable job of replacing the legendary Alex Ferguson as manager when he stepped down at the end of last season. “Shakhtar have a great record here so to get a point is no mean achievement. “I thought the team stood up well tonight and we defended very well.” Shakhtar head coach Mircea Lucescu said he considered the draw to be a fair result. “We allowed Manchester to score an early goal after a series of mistakes in defence,” he said. “We had to chase them down to

shot from 25 yards that beat Hart at his near post. It was another moment to forget for the England goalkeeper, who has committed several blunders since the turn of the year, but his team-mates were faring little better. With Bayern pressing high, City were unable to get a foot on the ball, leaving Edin Dzeko as a lonely outpost in the visitors’ half and causing rumbles of discontent to roll around the arena. Save an early header from Richards that Manuel Neuer easily caught, City were almost nonexistent as an attacking presence. Dzeko headed wide during a succession of City corners early in the second period, but Bayern were soon back on the attack, with Robben seeing a shot deflect wide off Vincent Kompany. Two goals in the space of three minutes put Bayern out of sight. They scored their second in the 56th minute, with Mueller ghosting in behind Gael Clichy to bring down Dante’s lofted pass, evade Hart’s star jump, and tuck the ball home. Moments later, Fernandinho was robbed on halfway by Mueller, who fed Robben, and the Dutchman streaked past Matija Nastasic before beating Hart at his near post.
