SERIOUSLY FRACKED!

Matt Damon, who advocated it earlier, has changed his mind in The Promised Land. Last week, from Quebec to Scotland, people were at loggerheads whether it’s a disaster waiting to happen or a boon for an energy-hungry world. One thing’s for sure, Fracking, has caused more consternation than a black hole in a bathtub. But what in the wide world of science is it?

wanted by many police stations in the City for serious crimes. Police said Anil belongs to a poor family and turned to crime early to make quick money. He has been in the crime scenes since 2008. He was once arrested but jumped bail two months ago and resumed the criminal activities under assumed names. The suspect had targeted labourers camping in various construction sites and is accused of raping and killing a 45-year-old labourer, who lived in a hutment, at the city outskirts in Bollaram. To make easy money, Anil is alleged to have resorted to snatching too. In some cases, he robbed the victim of her jewellery before raping and killing her.

Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Kavita Reddy, 32, who runs a marriage bureau from her home in Bandimet, Secunderabad, rues the day Srikanth, 35, approached her for a match. He looked a perfect groom, a bit old, but well placed and comely. Almost at the same time had Deviya, a resident of Uppal, applied to her bureau for a marriage match. Kavitha proposed Deviya to

Srikanth and a meeting was arranged. Both sides reportedly approved the match. For his part, Srikanth played well by bringing an elderly person as his parent. Marriage date was fixed and preparations began. Before marriage Deviya’s parents managed to collect `2 lakh and gave it to Srikant as dowry. The family also had given more than the usual fee to the bureau. Everybody was happy but then someone from Deviya’s

side made enquiries about Srikant and the shocking thing came out that he was married and has two kids! Having learnt this, the marriage was aborted in time but Deviya’s parents and relatives were furious as they lost their face. They accosted Kavitha who disowned all responsibility and refused to refund the fee paid to her. What about `2 lakh given to the criminal? she was asked. Kavitha is said to have washed her hands off saying the money was paid by them to him and so where does she come in? Enraged at her behaviour, Deviya’s parents and kin went on rampage, damaged her furniture and beat her up. Kavitha, who suffered broken lips and a swollen eye, escaped their clutches and ran to the Chikalguda police station nearby to complain against the attack. The police have registered a case against the bride’s parents. However, the parents of Deviya told the police that she must have known the fact that he is married. In such instances, brokers charge a higher fee from them and agree to keep the matter covered up. Kavitha however has vehemently denied this.

Foundation subsidises dialysis At times when private hospitals are making a killing over treatment of minor and major diseases, a City-based foundation has come forward to serve needy sick people with dialysis facilities. MOHSIN ALI ali@postnoon.com

A

s we all know, due to the lack of infrastructure in the health sector, the government is helpless and does not treat many diseases. Taking advantage of this situation, private hospitals loot patients by charging huge amounts even for minor and common diseases. In such a scenario City-based Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation has come forward to serve patients who are poor and not able to settle heavy hospital bills. The trust provides dialysis for just Rs400 while charges for the same in private hospitals run into thousands. Dialysis patients are left to the mercy of high-charging private institutions because dialysis treatment is not provided in government hospitals in the City. Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation has 62 ultramodern dialysis machines in three different centres of the City for the benefit of poor and needy patients. Their third dialysis centre was inaugurated at the Mahavir Hospital and Research Centre here on Sunday. On the occasion, chairman of the trust PC

More than two million Syrians have now fled their war-ravaged country, the UN refugee agency said Tuesday, lamenting the nearly 10-fold increase from a year ago. Parakk said, “The new dialysis unit at Mahavir Hospital and Research Centre has 24 machines installed at the cost of Rs2.5 crore. Now poor patients only need to pay Rs400 per dialysis as against prevailing rates of around Rs1,200 to 2,000. This one-sitting cost is so high that needy patients cannot afford dialysis regularly.” Adding further, Parakh informed that Government of Andhra Pradesh with the help of Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhan Parishad, and Andhra Pradesh Health and Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation, has provided them over 5,000 square feet of space

in the District Hospital premises at King Koti at no rental costs for setting up the dialysis centre. The Dialysis centre was setup in 2009 at a cost of over Rs.2.5 crores is a novel PublicPrivate partnership module which supports the needy with Government on one side and the NGO on another side. In the last four years from July 2009 to July 2013, the trust has provided 1,13,748 subsidised dialysis to patients. In terms of hospital bills, this converts to Rs10 crore. Similarly, over 1,04,000 erithropytene and iron injections were also provided, at the cost of Rs7.80 crore. “The trust provides dialysis

services at a concessional rate for needy patients without any consideration of caste, creed or religion,” he added. “Hyderabad is the diabetes capital. Approximately seven per cent of the population here is diabetic, due to which, sometimes, kidneys fail. Patients need dialysis, sometimes 8 to 12 times a month depending on their condition,” revealed a member of the foundation. “A lot of resources are needed to keep the project going,” he said, adding, “Philanthropists who want to help needy patients may send in their contributions to Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation Trust.”

FUKUSHIMA WATER LEAKS

Japan unveils $470 mn plan

TOKYO: The Japanese government on Tuesday unveiled a $470 million plan to stem radioactive water leaks at Fukushima, including freezing the ground underneath the stricken nuclear plant, as it pledged to lead from the front. Chiding operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) for its haphazard management of the spiralling problems, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his administration will spend public money to get the job done. “The government needs to resolve the problem by standing at the forefront,” he told a meeting of his nuclear disaster response team. “Discarding the current, impromptu response, we will set up our basic policies for a fundamental resolution of the contaminated water problem. “The government will do its

best and take the necessary fiscal action,” he said, referring to tapping taxpayer funds. Tokyo’s move comes just days before a decision in Argentina by the International AROUND THE

WORLD

Olympic Committee on who should host the 2020 Games, with observers warning the situation at Fukushima could prove the undoing of Tokyo’s bid. Thousands of tonnes of radioactive water is being stored in temporary tanks at the site, 220 kilometres (135 miles) north of the Japanese capital, much of it having been used to cool molten reactors wrecked by the tsunami of March 2011. The discovery of leaks from some of these tanks or from

pipes feeding them, as well as radiation hotspots on the ground even where no water is evident, has created a growing headache for TEPCO. Some of the highly toxic water that has

escaped may have made its way into the Pacific Ocean, TEPCO has admitted. On top of this, the natural flow of groundwater from the surrounding hillsides is also causing problems. AFP

Rahul, à la Modi, embraces social media POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Rahul Gandhi mania has begun to affect the party units and cadres across the nation. ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Lakshmi Sowmya, a student from Nellore who ranked 77 in Eamcet this year, could have easily got an admission in one of the top medical colleges in the city. However, the uncertainty over the bifurcation of the state and the ongoing agitation has forced her to join a college that is not in the top league. This is not just the case of Lakshmi. Due to various other issues like the”non-local” tag, many students from Andhra are unable to get admission in some of the city’s top professional colleges. “Two years back when my daughter started preparing for Eamcet entrance exam, she kept in mind the best colleges in Hyderabad and worked hard. SYRIA STRIKE

Obama starts to build support While the White House is trying to sway opinion on the Syria vote, there are chances of ‘no vote’looking very probable. Senator Linday Graham warned of the wider consequences of a failure to back military action. WASHINGTON: The White House battled Monday for congressional authorisation to bomb Syria, as two top Republicans warned that a “no” vote after President Barack Obama had threatened action would be catastrophic. Hawkish senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham emerged from an hour of talks with Obama suggesting that the White House could be mulling a wider military campaign in Syria than first thought, along with more robust support for the opposition. McCain and Graham appeared to offer qualified backing for Obama’s plans. “A vote against that resolution by Congress I think would be catastrophic," said McCain. “It would undermine the credibility of the United States of America and the president of the United States. None of us want that." Graham warned of the wider consequences of a failure to back military action."I can’t sell another Iraq or Afghanistan, because I don’t want to," Graham said. America’s top military officer, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, will also appear. Kerry “will argue that the failure to take action against Assad unravels the deterrent impact of the

international norm against chemical weapons use; endangers our friends and our partners along Syria’s borders... and risks emboldening Assad and his key allies — Hezbollah and Iran," a senior State Department official said. The administration may have its work cut out for it in the Republican-run House, which includes many conservatives who have blocked Obama’s agenda at home on issues like gun control and immigration reform and may relish the chance to embarrass him abroad. Liberal House Democrats are also a cause for White House concern. Obama has a limited window this week for personal politicking on Syria: he is due to leave town on Tuesday evening to visit Sweden and attend the G20 summit in Russia. Syria sought WMD material: Swiss officials US Marine website hit by pro-Assad hackers

PARIS: A French intelligence report said Monday that forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad carried out a “massive” chemical attack last month, as the Syrian leader warned that military strikes against him would risk igniting a regional war. Anxious to overcome widespread scepticism of military action in response to the alleged gas attack, France released a nine-page report outlining its case against the regime. Based on military and foreign intelligence services, the report said the regime launched an attack “combining conventional means with the massive use of chemical agents” on rebel-held areas around the capital Damascus on August 21. It said that based on videos, French intelligence had counted at least 281 dead but that reports of up to 1,500 killed were consistent with such heavy use of chemical weapons.

GENEVA: Syria made multiple attempts to buy equipment in Switzerland that could have been used to make weapons of mass destruction, but officials blocked the sales, Swiss authorities said Monday. A total of 14 attempted purchases by Syria were turned down since 1998 by Switzerland’s export-control watchdog, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, its spokeswoman Marie Avet said. Among the contested items were a bioreactor, an industrial vacuum pump, and valves. Avet told AFP that the 14 rejected purchases were worth a total of 1.7 million Swiss francs (1.38 million euros, $1.7 million). The items in question could have had a civilian use, but there were reasons to believe that they could have been used to build weapons, she said.

WASHINGTON: Pro-Syrian regime hackers posted messages on a US Marine Corps recruiting website on Monday, urging troops to defy orders from President Barack Obama. The hackers showed photos of people in American uniforms holding hand-written signs saying they would not fight for Al-Qaeda in Syria. “Obama is a traitor who wants to put your lives in danger to rescue al-Qaeda insurgents," the message read, according to a screenshot from The Wall Street Journal. The US Marine Corps confirmed the intrusion but said the affected site, Marines.com, was back to normal. “Marines.com itself was not compromised or ‘hacked," said Captain Eric Flanagan in a statement. “It was redirected for a limited amount of hours overnight."The site “is now operating normally and our team is actively monitoring the situation," he added.

SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has clashed with a Christian pastor over gay marriage, using the Bible to support his argument as he explained his change of heart on the issue. Labor leader Rudd, who is lagging in polls ahead of Saturday's national election, was asked why Christians should vote for him given "Jesus said a man shall leave his father and mother and be married, and that's the Biblical definition". "I'm just curious for you, Kevin, if you call yourself a Christian, why don't you believe the words of Jesus in the Bible?" pastor Matt Prater asked the prime minister on the live programme "Q&A" on Monday night. "Well, mate if I was going to have that view, the Bible also says that slavery is a natural condition," Rudd responded to sustained applause.

"Because St Paul said in the New Testament, slaves be obedient to your masters. And therefore we should have all fought for the Confederacy in the US Civil War. I mean, for goodness' sake." Gay marriage is a key issue in some electorates, with Rudd becoming the first Australian prime minister to go into an election promising marriage equality, vowing to introduce a bill legalising the unions if returned to office. Conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott is opposed to same-sex marriages. Rudd last year voted against gay marriage in parliament, but has since changed his mind, prompting Prater to ask whether the prime minister kept "chopping and changing your beliefs just to get a popular vote with regards to things like marriage". He said the fundamental principle of the New Testament was one of universal love, "and if we get obsessed with a particular definition of that through a form of sexuality, then I think we are missing the centrality of what the gospel... is all about". "And if you think homosexuality is an unnatural condition, then frankly I cannot agree with you," he added. AFP

SAO FELIX DO XINGU: In a remote corner of the Brazilian Amazon, farmer Lacir Soares is promoting sustainable cattle rearing that shuns deforestation and meets the environmental requirements of a new forestry law. His venture, supported by the cattle industry and environmentalists, illustrates how things are changing in the Amazon region. Over the past decade, cattle ranching has driven deforestation and many consumers were concerned that the meat they were buying was responsible for destroying the world’s biggest rain forest. aging the forest. With more than 200 million head of cattle, Brazil is the world’s top beef exporter — 20 percent of beef exports come from the Amazon region — but it also leads in low productivity: one cow per hectare (about 2.5 acres). Soares manages to feed 2.3 head per hectare thanks to his more sustainable practices. “The balance between cattle and forest is not just a legal obligation, it also ensures higher productivity,” said Soares, a fit 69year-old farmer and lawyer sweating under the stifling heat. He knows that respecting the environment is the key to his economic survival.

The environmental group Greenpeace then released an explosive report alleging that meat and leather from deforested areas were finding their way into the industry that supplies top shoe and fashion companies as well as supermarkets and even the car industry. The allegations pushed the industry into seeking more effective programs, said Fernando

Sampaio, executive head of the Brazilian Meat Exporters Association. Part of the solution came from technology. In a huge area where access is difficult, satellite maps updated almost in real time make it possible to monitor where illegal logging is taking place. Under the new forestry leg-

It joined hands with US retail giant Walmart and the US environmental group, The Nature Conservancy, to turn some local farms into environmental and economic models of meat production that can be replicated in other parts of the Amazon. “Without such sustainable practices, perhaps we could not have sold to markets such as Europe where consumers are very environmentally conscious,” said Mathias Almeida, Marfrig’s sustainability manager. In Paris this year, the luxury brand Gucci launched a bag made with Amazon leather that includes environmental sustainability certification. “The siege of cattle ranchers relying on deforestation has helped to drastically curb deforestation,” prosecutor Daniel Azeredo Avelino told AFP. He said that most major meat producers have accepted the bargain. “If they persist in deforesting, they will lose access to markets,” he said.

TRADITIONAL SPORTS

Comin’ out Schwingen Schwingen is an ancestral form of wrestling unique to Switzerland, where hulking athletes in sackcloth shorts fight for crowns of oak leaves and prizes ranging from bulls to power drills. JONATHAN FOWLER Agence France-Presse BURGDORF: Battling to the last with sweat pouring from his brow, the wrestler winced as he lost his footing, the crowd roared and his rival flattened him in the sawdust. In an Alpine nation that holds its traditions dear, it doesn’t come more Swiss than this, as the cowbells ring and the alphorns echo in a 52,000-seater stadium. “Schwingen” is an ancestral form of wrestling unique to Switzerland, where hulking athletes in sackcloth shorts fight for crowns of oak leaves and prizes ranging from bulls to power drills. “It’s like a pure extract of Swissness,” said Markus Walther, 45, his gaze locked on the seven sawdust circles in the centre of the temporary stadium’s grass. Little known abroad, Schwingen is iconic in Switzerland. The triennial national championships — where around 300 top-level wrestlers vie for the title of “Schwingerkoenig”, or King of the Schwingers — are the country’s largest sporting event. This year’s edition was expected to draw 300,000 people, overwhelmingly from the country’s majority German-speaking regions which are Schwingen’s heartland. The region’s hotels were booked solid, and demand was sky-high for stadium tickets priced at between 165 and 225 Swiss francs (134-183 euros, $177-242) for a two-day pass. The remaining fans watched outside on big screens, or soaked up the atmosphere with the help of some of the 80,000 sausages and 210,000 litres of beer expected to be wolfed down. Like football supporters in their team’s replica kit, many in

Burgdorf sported peasant-style shirts in the colours of their home regions. Swiss national television broadcasts the bouts live, and top-level Schwingers are big names, with 2010 champion Kilian Wenger, 23, and rival Matthias Sempach, 27, both big crowd-pullers. “These are young guys, and real idols,” said Fabio Lorenzet of the championships’ organisation team. Star-struck youngsters dream of emulating their success. “I’d love to be the King myself one day,” said 13-year-old Pascal, who, like Wenger, has been wrestling since he was nine. Other fans admire them for different reasons. A typical Schwinger, Wenger weighs 106 kilos, is one metre, 90 centimetres tall and is as fit as a firefighter.

“Of course I like it because it’s a great part of our tradition. But also because of these are really manly men, not pretty boys,” said Seraina Derungs, 25, as she chuckled at suggestions that Wenger was the David Beckham of Schwingen.

The comparisons with stars of global sports like football also fall short because Schwingers are amateurs, do not receive cash prizes, and must give a cut of any sponsorship back to their club. There are ways and means to get by, however. For example, selling the Burgdorf bull would rake in 22,000 Swiss francs, and the bigname wrestlers are often tapped by advertisers. “You can’t live from Schwingen, but I know a handful of them don’t have to work so much in their day jobs,” said Lorenzet. Despite the star power and smartphone apps for fans, Schwingen has its feet rooted firmly in the past. It emerged among mountain herders and woodsmen centuries ago, and has been seen as a

national sport since featuring at gatherings held in reaction to French rule during the Napoleonic Wars of the early 1800s. It took off big time after Swiss-wide rules were set down ahead of the first national championships in 1895. The basics include having to grip the opponent’s Bermudalength Schwingen shorts with at least one hand throughout a bout, and to bring his shoulders to the ground within six minutes in order to win. “It’s a test of physical strength plus quick thinking and composure,” said Walther, who competed at the 1995 championships and runs the Schwingen federation of Mittelland, a region near the Swiss capital Bern. Unlike boxing, there are no weight categories. A bout between a 142-kilo, two-metre Schwinger and one who weighs 49 kilos less and is 24 centimetres shorter might seem a lost cause, but turning a rival’s apparent advantage against him is part and parcel. “It’s a complete sport, because you use not only your strength but also your technical skills to offset drawbacks,” 26-year-old competitor Vincent Heiniger told AFP. “The goal is to beat your opponent. But there’s also a huge amount of respect, and that’s part of the tradition too.” Championship Schwingers may well be nicknamed “Boesen”, or bad guys, in a nod to their toughness. But that label is belied by their behaviour: the winner always helps his defeated opponent up and brushes him clean of sawdust.

A history of ‘Swing’

T

he roots of Schwingen cannot be determined exactly. The modern sport was institutionalised in the 19th century out of older, regional traditions. There are records of wrestling in Switzerland from the medieval period. A picture from the 13th century (in the Cathedral of Lausanne) shows

the typical way of gripping the opponent. Schwingen as a special form of grappling in Alpine culture can be traced to the early 17th century. This form of grappling is preserved during the 17th and 18th century in the Emmental, Haslital and Entlebuch regions specifically.

In 18th century travel literature, Schwingen figures as part of the stereotypes of Swiss alpine culture. The Entlebuch pastor Franz Josef Stalder in 1797 records a set of rules in his Fragmente über Entlebuch. The modern history of the sport begins during the period of Mediation, with the

Unspunnenfest of 1805. In the late 19th century, memorable Schwing festivals and a lively activity of educated gymnastics teachers brought Schwingen to the big cities. Thus the original fight of the herders and farmers became a national sport that reached all social levels. The associations,

headed by the Eidgenössischer Schwingerverband (national federation, founded 1895), organized the sport by integrating regional peculiarities, improving the abilities of the fighters with teaching books and practices, and creating modern tournament rules.

Jindal embroiled in Mozambique scandal

Just days before the inauguration of Jindal’s mine, anger at the company’s failure to relocate 2,500 nearby residents boiled over into conflict. JINTY JACKSON Agence France-Presse MAPUTO: Indian firm Jindal has become the latest company in Mozambique to become embroiled in a mining resettlement scandal, which threatens the booming coal sector. On August 14, amid much fanfare, Mozambique’s President Armando Guebuza inaugurated Jindal’s massive new coal mine in northwestern Tete province that hugs the mighty Zambezi River. It was the third biggest mine of its kind in the country, which has already seen seven per centannual growth fuelled by revenues from one of the world’s largest unexploited coal fields. Two decades after of a crippling civil war, it is just the kind of investment Mozambique welcomes and that — if well managed — may help pull it out of poverty. Jindal, which is also a steel maker, eyes exporting ten million tonnes of coal annually, cashing in on industrial development in India and China. But just days before the inauguration of the mine, anger at the company’s failure to relocate 2,500 nearby residents boiled over into conflict. Irate locals attacked four Jindal employees according to local environmental group Justica Ambiental (JA). “It is the sowing period and one of the things [Jindal] promised is that they would give them lands to grow," JA spokesman Ruben Mann said. “They didn’t, so the population saw their food safety threatened and knew that yet again

CHICAGO: Ronald Coase, the British-born US economist who was awarded the Nobel prize in 1991, died on Tuesday in Chicago, the University of Chicago announced. He was 102. Coase, who studied at the University of London and London School of Economics, was famed for his 1960 article, The Problem of Social Cost, was the basis for the famous Coase Theorem. It suggests that well-defined property rights could overcome nonmarket forces. Another of his trailblazing works was The Nature of the Firm (1937), on the concept of transaction costs and how it explains firms’ characteristics and limits.

$25MN WATER GRANT they were not going to have a harvest." Jindal Mozambique head Manoj Gupta said the government only approved the resettlement plan recently, which had delayed the process and blamed the trouble on “outsiders” who create problems. “There was an issue with the community, because some of the people were drunk," he said without elaborating. The firm expects to resettle 434 families within the next two years. It is not the first foreign firm to stumble into a resettlement controversy. Brazil’s Vale and AngloAustralian Rio Tinto, who like Jindal use open-pit mining, have had their problems too. Vale moved 1,300 families to make way for its mine in

Moatize in Tete province. But the community complained they were settled too far away and that their new houses were crumbling. Protesters blocked the mine and railway in April demanding more compensation and slowed exports. After the 16-year civil war ended in 1992 Mozambique passed a law giving communities considerable power over their territory. Land is owned communally and firms have to make several commitments before they are granted usage concessions. But activists say the communities get the short end of the stick. Human Rights Watch has attacked both Vale and Rio Tinto for shoddy resettlements. “Many of the 1,429 households resettled to make way for

Vale and Rio Tinto’s international coal mining operations... have faced serious disruptions in their access to food, water, and work," the rights group said. Citing government data, Human Rights Watch said 60 per cent of Tete’s total surface is taken up by mining concession and exploration licences as well as applications pending approval. Jindal has had to hack out part of land it had set aside for mining because the government did not have any free to give to landless communities. “To give the land for resettlement is the responsibility of the government but the government does not have the land. So we have taken out the land from our concession area," said Gupta.

STILL THE WIZARD OF OZ AUSTRALIA AT THE POLLS Martin Parry

R

upert Murdoch’s clout in Britain and the United States might have diminished, but in Australia he dominates the media landscape, playing a prominent role in undermining Kevin Rudd’s dream of retaining power, analysts say. While the ruling Labour party has long trailed the Tony Abbott-led conservative opposition in opinion polls, Rudd’s ousting of Julia Gillard to re-take the prime ministership in June reignited hopes that he could pull off an unlikely upset in the September 7 general election. But Rudd quickly found that he was battling not only undecided voters but also Murdoch, who controls about two-thirds of the press in the country where he established his powerful global media empire. Few other countries have media concentrated in such a way and the day after Rudd announced the election date, Murdoch’s Sydney tabloid The Daily Telegraph made clear its stance, running a picture of Rudd on its front page under the headline Kick This Mob Out. Around the country, publications under News Corp — which backed Rudd during his successful 2007 election — have launched a series of scathing headlines with Murdoch himself taking to Twitter to attack Labour and throw his support behind Abbott. To ram home the point, The Sunday Telegraph at the weekend splashed a picture of Abbott on its front page under the headline Australia Needs Tony, less than a week away from polling day. “You can see by the reaction of the

politicians that the media is obviously influential. It can set the agenda," said David McKnight, of the University of New South Wales and author of the book Rupert Murdoch: An Investigation of Political Power. “Given that he (Murdoch) controls 70 per cent of the capital city newspaper circulation in Australia, his moods and beliefs are a material factor during elections in Australia," McKnight told AFP. Debate has raged over why Australian-born Murdoch would want to influence the outcome, with Rudd pointing to the tycoon opposing Labour’s national broadband (NBN) network. He suggested this threatened the business model of News Corp’s pay-TV arm Foxtel, which is one of the company’s key

assets, generating decent profits in a difficult media age where traditional newspapers are losing money. The argument is that consumers could opt to use fast NBN speeds to download their own visual entertainment rather than pay for a Foxtel subscription. But McKnight said Murdoch was a political animal and his backing of Abbott could not be explained simply through commercial interests. “Newspaper ownership in Australia is among the most concentrated in the world and it is very significant that it is controlled by a highly political proprietor," he said. How successful his campaign will be remains to be seen. During the US presidential election

last year, the mogul, whose empire includes Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, used Twitter to savage the Obama-Biden campaign — to no avail. News Corp has long played a role in politics. Famously in Britain, in 1992, Murdoch’s newspaper The Sun ran a triumphant front-page headline proclaiming, It’s The Sun Wot Won It, after the Conservatives unexpectedly kept office. Tom Watson, the British Labour MP who played a big part in helping expose the News of the World phone-hacking scandal that led to Murdoch shutting down his mass-market paper, agrees he can have a strong impact. “It insults Australians when they produce content like that," he told The Sydney Morning Herald, referring to the Kick This Mob Out front page and others depicting Labour politicians as clowns and Nazis. “But they do it for a reason. If you traduce someone’s character, even in a seemingly satirical way, it has a drip-drip effect. This stuff works." Australia’s other main media player, Fairfax, has taken a more balanced election line and in an apparent dig at News Corp started running full-page adverts mid-campaign touting its independence. The head of advanced journalism at the University of Melbourne, Margaret Simon, said that people who want to buy a newspaper in most places in Australia, outside the cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, have no choice but to read a Murdoch publication. “The News Corp coverage will be quite damaging (for Rudd)," she said, adding: “Murdoch just likes to pick winners and influence outcomes." Indeed, in Britain after 1992, Murdoch ditched his support for the Tories and backed Tony Blair — after a long campaign of courtship by the business-friendly Labour leader. AFP

rance has put together a dossier (yes the same thing that was put together to ‘prove’ that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction) that they claim proves the Assad regime in Syria used Sarin gas on its own people. The Americans don’t need to see the dossier, they’re already convinced that Assad’s guilty and are lobbying for congressional approval to launch strikes against Syria. The UK, well they’re going to sit this one out, and let the French Poodle replace the British Bulldog for a bit. But Russia’s Putin is adamant that all this dossier business is a load of humbug being used for the sole purpose of gaining UN approval to launch strikes against Syria. And he’s not impressed. What Putin understands is that Syria is not Iraq. Bolstered by Iran and Hezbollah, Assad’s regime still has a lot of support within the country (let’s face it only a few years ago he was being feted by the West for his progressive policies). Putin also knows that among the rebels are thousands of al-Qaeda fighters waiting to seize any opportunity to wreak havoc. If Iraq was a quagmire, Syria is an avalanche waiting to happen. An attack on Syria could have disastrous consequences not the least for Israel and Turkey. Putin sees this, it’s a pit Obama and Hollande don’t.

hen La Liga is mentioned, images of Lionel Messi cavorting past hapless defenders and Cristiano Ronaldo charging through the opponent ranks spring to mind. But in order for these stars to shine so bright there’s a whole host of players who supply ‘the fuels for the burning excellence’. Mesut Ozil is one of these players. Ozil has had 71 assists in the years he has played for Real Madrid, more than any other European player. So no one was surprised when Arsenal smashed their transfer record to sign the German playmaker on the last day of the transfer window for £45 million. With countrymen Podolski and Mertesacker already in the team, Ozil should fit in seamlessly alongside Wilshire, Walcott and Cozorla. In two weeks we will see why he was worth every penny.

workplace BOSSLESS OFFICES

NEW AGE WORKPLACES

T

Where’s the boss?

Recently, a certain blog has been trending on the Internet which talks of a bossless office. A trend which most have dismissed. We talk to a few people to know if the trend will catch on here. FLEME VARKEY fleme.v@postnoon.com

T

he workplace is changing…. how are you managing? Everything right from the management to the benefits to the working styles, all have undergone enormous changes. The way we interact with each other and the customers, do our work, categorise our priorities, the platforms on which we work, mediums through which we communicate all show a remarked difference than from what it was five years ago. There is a saying “The boss is always right.” A concept which most of us know of and is well-used in the workplaces of yesterday. Today, another concept is brewing in the working world — Working in a bossless office. Initially you had people resigning from their well-paying jobs and embarking on ventures of their own, for some the change was because boredom

set in and for some it was unable to handle the over demanding boss. The desire for being one’s own boss was strong. It still is and probably that is what has led to creating a bossless office. For example, Valve Corp., a videogame maker in Bellevue, Washington, boasts high-end espresso, free massages and laundry service at its offices. One thing it doesn't have: bosses. Valve, whose website says the company has been "boss free" since its founding in 1996, also has no managers or assigned projects. Instead, its 300 employees recruit colleagues to work on projects they think are worthwhile.

HOW DOES THE EMPLOYEE OF TODAY VIEW A BOSSLESS OFFICE?

“It sounds quite weird. We are so used to reporting to superiors, taking orders and looking for assignments that working in an office without a boss would be something like the unthinkable. On one hand I would say

that it’s worth a try, each of us can realise our true potential as workers, we will have more freedom and flexibility at work and there won’t be the fear of getting reprimanded every other day. How well this concept can be adapted to Indian workplaces? That is certainly doubtful, as the hierarchical, caste and region based politics in the firms of today will not allow it to flourish,” says Sheetal Mahato, an employee with a multinational software and technology company in the City. MV Vishal, who works at an advertising agency feels, it’s a concept that will not work in the long run. He explains why, “How do you explain pay packages, incentives and promotions? If each is responsible for themselves then how do we know if we are working fully or if any teammate is falling back. Then what about hiring and firing. On what basis will it be done. How do you explain the transition from a bossless company to one which has a boss? These questions need proof-

based answers. And as far the workings of the Indian workplace goes, this idea will take ages to see the light of day.” Going back to Valve, it seems that there, there are no promotions, only new projects. To help decide pay, employees rank their peers — but not themselves — voting on who they think creates the most value. Any employee can participate in hiring decisions, which are usually made by teams. Firings, while relatively rare, work the same way: teams decide together if someone isn't working out. In all this the human element is prominent. That’s what will hinder this concept from taking wing in the country, says Joseph Williams, an editor at a media company. “Human nature will be the biggest roadblock to this plan. People will have ego clashes and then superiority complexes and in that way work will always get affected, he says. “The concept may work if each individual is responsible and can work efficiently in a team,” he adds.

he future of Northern Ireland's offices has arrived, and it's not grey. At least not for the most part because business advisors Grant Thornton have tossed aside the traditional model for office interiors and instead replicated some of the most famous fantasy movies of the last few decades at its Belfast base. The three floors of the company's office in Clarendon Dock do have conventional office space for the hard graft but that's interspersed with themed meeting rooms based on Harry Potter, Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Willy Wonka. That might sound more theme park than accountants' lair but is intended to provide a "creative workspace" in which the company's staff feel excited to work in and one which is more fun than the norm. Taking inspiration from offices in the likes of Google and Innocent Drinks, the new base may draw raised eyebrows from traditionalists but will ensure a creative workforce, according to Gareth Neill, a partner at the company. He said 250 people work at the Clarendon Dock offices, with 80% in so-called client facing roles. "We hire people who are smart and determined and we favour ability and attitude over experience," he said. "It was important for us to invest in a creative environment, showing we care about our people, while inspiring them to grow with the business and most importantly recognising the excellent work that they do." Approaching the front door of the Grant Thornton offices there's little evidence of what lies inside but once at the reception desk it's evident that all is not as it seems. The canteen is in fact a staff restaurant based on an airport lounge complete with rows of airport-style seating. The back door foyer has a table tennis table and table football and leads on to a Wii room. Behind reception is one of the stars of the show, the circular Willy Wonka meeting room which has everything apart from Oompa Loompas. Source: Belfast Telegraph

POSITIVE RESULTS FOR NEW ANTICOAGULANT FROM

A new entrant in the growing oral anticoagulant field shows promise for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The drug, edoxaban, is a new, once-daily Factor Xa inhibitor with a rapid onset of action that is under development by Daiichi Sankyo.

THE GERM GENESIS

19

TB FOLLOWED HUMANS OUT OF AFRICA I One of the largest genetic investigations into the microbe which causes TB shows the germ followed early humans out of Africa at least 70,000 years ago, scientists said.

n a parallel probe, investigators also said they had identified 39 new genes that drive dangerous drug resistance in this germ, Mycobacterium tuberculosis.TB is one of the deadliest diseases in the medical lexicon.Untreated, it kills roughly half the people it infects.Even today, in the era of advanced antibiotics, it causes between a million and two million deaths each year, mainly in developing countries.Drug designers are embroiled in an arms race with the germ, hoping to outflank it with new treatments before it develops resistance to existing ones. Writing in the journal Nature Genetics, researchers led by Sebastien Gagneux of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute compared the DNA of 259 TB strains from around the world. They used this to build a “family tree” of the germ, using genetic mutations as a kind of molecular clock to show its pace of evolution. The comparison shows that the bacterium originated in Africa over 70,000 years ago, coinciding with the migration of anatomically modern humans from their homeland. Indeed, the family trees of Homo sapiens

The comparison shows that the bacterium originated in Africa over 70,000 years ago, coinciding with the migration of anatomically modern humans from their homeland.

and M tuberculosis overlap stunningly, which suggests early man and bug lived in close proximity, the researchers found. “The evolutionary path of humans and the TB bacteria shows striking similarity,” said Gagneux. “We see that the diversity of tuberculosis bacteria has increased markedly when human populations expanded.” TB’s spread was probably kickstarted when humans started to live in larger communities, enabling the germ to be transmitted more efficiently from person to person, the authors speculate. The germ’s ancient history means the disease is unlikely to have jumped from domesticated animals to humans, as has been seen in so many other bacteria or viruses.”[This is] simply because

Mycobacteria tuberculosis emerged long before humans started to domesticate animals,” said Gagneux. In a separate study, also published in Nature Genetics, Harvard Medical School investigators found 39 new genes implicated in drug-resistant TB in a genomic comparison of 123 strains. But it also turned up evidence that drug resistance is more complex than thought.A conventional notion is that resistance occurs with a single mutation in a gene.Instead, this change is likely to be part of a multi-step process that starts with low resistance and then builds up. “Until now, people assumed that single mutations conferred high-level resistance — a strain either had them or did not — but our results challenge that paradigm,” said Megan Murray, a professor of global health and social medicine, in a press release. “Knowing that small changes occur early in the evolution of resistance open the door for big changes, or that a single change is a gateway to global resistance, would be important clues in our struggle to outrace evolving drug resistance.” AFP

Mellow music may help stave off road rage

A quick switch to mellow music in the car may make you a safer driver, researchers say.

P

romptly changing to soothing music is the most effective way to calm down while driving in stressful conditions that could trigger road rage, found the study published in the journal Ergonomics. It was already known that music can influence mood and driving styles. More accidents occur when drivers listen to “upbeat” music, possibly

because the music is more distracting or because it causes drivers to go faster. Downbeat music is more relaxing and associated with safer driving. However, there were questions about whether a quick or gradual switch from upbeat to downbeat music was most effective in changing drivers’ moods. To get answers, researchers had volunteers tackle demanding driving con-

ditions in a simulator while they listened to different types of music. Participants who switched to more mellow music abruptly or gradually both reached the same levels of calmness eventually. However, those who made the switch quickly became calm sooner and made fewer driving mistakes, according to a journal news release. www.webmd.com

Technology GADGETS

‘Lifelogging’ cams shrug off privacy, seize the moment Lifelogging is gaining popularity with mobile apps such as Saga, which creates info graphics summarising your life through your smartphone data, and health trackers like Runkeeper and Moves. ANNA-KARIN LAMPOU Agence France Presse STOCKHOLM: When Martin Kaellstroem was a young adult, he lost both his parents to cancer. It became a spur for him to seize the day, as a person and an entrepreneur. The result: A lens with no off-button that captures every moment of your life. The 38-year-old co-founder of Swedish company Memoto is a man in a hurry as he promotes his “lifelogging” camera, which is worn with a clip on the shirt or on a string around the neck, and takes a picture once every 30 seconds. Some may see parallels with George Orwell’s 1984, the Truman Show or other dystopias. But the team behind the Memoto camera insists that it doesn’t breach any privacy. Rather, they see it as a way to collect memories. “Traditionally, people only brought their camera to special events when everyone was dressed up, smiling into the camera,” Kaellstroem said. “But you don’t know in advance which moments will be important in the future. Perhaps you meet your future wife or witness an accident or a crime, pictures you might want to return to.” Lifelogging, a technique for digitally gathering daily

moments, is a growing phenomenon, gaining popularity with mobile applications such as Saga, which creates info graphics summarising your life through your smartphone data, and health trackers like Runkeeper and Moves. Following the success of calling software Skype, music streaming service Spotify and video game developer Dice the next big thing could be a device logging your life in pictures. The Memoto camera, which resembles an iPod mini, collects a stream of pictures, automatically sorted according to the GPS-location, time and light. The ‘memory timeline’ can be shared on social media such as Facebook or Twitter. It is a tool for a new techsavvy world without the patience to keep a diary, according to co-founder Oskar Kalmaru. “I’ve failed several times when trying to write a blog or travelogue. Older relatives managed to keep a diary over 20 years, but it is hard with the routine,” he said. British lifelogging camera Autographer emerged in the medical field as a facilitator for Alzheimer patients and GoPro and Looxcie are targeting practitioners of extreme sports. Memoto will cater to both exhibitionists or nostalgic souls, according to Kaellstroem. “There are two main types of

In the future the company might develop accessories such as a waterproof case, a wide-angle lens and a wi-fi dock. users,” he said. “The first category, to which I belong, is the collector who saves and organises the memories, but only shares them with a small circle of close friends and family. The other group is more social, aiming to share a creative and active life through various social media platforms.” But classmates, employees and neighbours may not want to be caught on film, much less people in witness protection programmes or other sensitive areas of life.

‘BIG BROTHER LIGHT ‘

Lifelogging does raise some privacy questions, says Steven Savage, a researcher at the Swedish Defence Research Agency, noting that the private sphere is relative: what is not offensive to one person might be to another. “It depends where the photos end up,” Savage said. “Today, it is difficult to search pictures, but new technology is being developed all

the time. Once those pictures become searchable, more questions will arise. You’ll lose control over the situation.” Jan Svaerdhagen, who is currently writing a book about lifelogging, agrees. “The first question one should raise is ‘what function is filled by taking a photo every 30 seconds’? Who buys the product and for what purpose? Are we entering the next stage of social media where we not only log, but also share our lives 24/7 in a kind of Big Brother Light version?” said Svaerdhagen. “I jog a lot, and sure it would be fun to have some photos from a run, but the question is, are we entering narcissism in its most extreme form?” he said. Kaellstroem said he and his team thought a great deal about privacy while designing the camera, bearing in mind that many might be uncomfortable with being confronted with a spying eye. “It has to be clear that it is a camera, but yet with a friendly design that makes people comfortable and not distracted,” he said. Soon, 4,000 of these cameras will reach their users. In the future they might develop accessories such as a waterproof case, a wide-angle lens and a wifi dock. In the meantime, the blueprint is available online for creative users to personalise their camera.

NOKIA BUCKLES

Microsoft to buy Nokia phone unit for $7.17 bn HELSINKI: Beleaguered Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia will sell its mobile phone unit to US group Microsoft for 5.44 billion euros ($7.17 billion), it said on Tuesday. Nokia will grant Microsoft a 10-year non-exclusive licence to its patents and will itself focus on network infrastructure and services, which it called "the best path forward for Nokia and its shareholders." The company also announced the immediate departure of chief executive Stephen Elop. Nokia was long the global leader in making mobile phones but has been overtaken by rivals Samsung and Apple as it struggled to establish winning business models and mobile devices. The transaction announced Tuesday is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2014, pending approval by Nokia shareholders and regulatory authorities. Some 32,000 Nokia employees are expected to transfer to Microsoft, including approximately 4,700 people in Finland, the company said. The operations affected by the transfer generated approximately 14.9 billion euros in 2012, or almost 50 per cent of Nokia's net sales, the company said. Of the total purchase price of 5.44 billion euros, 3.79 billion relates to the purchase of Nokia's Devices & Services business, and 1.65 billion relates to the mutual patent agreement and future option. Last month, Nokia finalised the purchase of German engineering giant Siemens' 50 percent stake in Nokia Siemens Networks for 1.7 billion euros. NSN, which is specialised in high-speed mobile broadband, was set up as a joint venture between the two companies in 2007, a partnership that expired in April. The unit has posted stronger earnings than Nokia's mobile phone business. AFP

GOOD STORY A PRIORITY FOR

GURDIP KOHLI

A

ctress Gurdip Kohli says only a good story can lure her into accepting any role on television and it should be etched in the minds of the audience. The 33-year-old made a mark on the small screen as Juhi in the 2004 superhit show Sanjivani. She later went on to do daily soaps like Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka and Kasamh Se. “The story is the only driv-

ing factor when I choose a role. The role, however small or big, should make a contribution to the final outcome and should be remembered by the audience,” Gurdip told IANS. With increase in number of reality shows like Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa, Nach Baliye, India’s Dancing Superstar and Bigg Boss, Gurdip is also game for them, but not at the cost of family time. “I have been a part of dance reality show myself

where I participated with my husband, Arjun. Some of them are fun to watch and I particularly like to watch Madhuri Dixit’s dance reality show on TV,” said Gurdip, who has a three-year-old daughter Meher with husband Arjun Punj. “But I can’t be a part of a show that requires me to l stay away from my daughter and family for weeks. My family comes first for me,” said Gurdip, who participated in 2006 show Nach Baliye with

her husband. While the actress is not hesitant in experimenting with her roles, Gurdip does not wish to jump the gun. “As an actor, I love to experiment and have tried to ensure that my approach reflects in my work. I do not wish to rush into a project without having a strong role and a story,” she said. The actress shared screen space with actor Akshay Kumar in movie Rowdy

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

I

f you think Miley Cyrus is going down a scary path, you might not be alone. Miley herself may agree with you. The singer admits in a new interview that she's messed up and details the lifestyle that may be responsible for it. "I have so many f***ing issues," she tells the Mirror while promoting We Can't Stop in the UK. "I'm so f***ed up — everyone does dumb stuff when they are messed up." Perhaps one of those "dumb" things is dancing with teddy bears and twerking with Robin Thicke at the Video Music Awards? Though Miley's blunt opinion on herself is interesting, more telling is the description of her life. "People are impressed with me because I can sleep for just 45 minutes — I'm used to it," she says. "I suppose I am a workhorse. I love being in the studio and when I take vacation I get so bored." Maybe Miley should try a different kind of vacation. She might not get bored going backpacking or camping. Either way, she definitely should sleep more.

2020 GAMES

India entourage on IOC menu PIRATE IRWIN Agence France-Presse PARIS: Ahead of votes for the 2020 Summer Olympics host city, a sport for the 2020 Games, and the new International Olympic Committee (IOC) president the IOC’s elite 15-person Executive Board will meet to discuss some thorny issues in Buenos Aires. The two subjects likely to be top of the agenda will be whether to end India’s eight month suspension from the IOC and potential sanctions for the entourage of an athlete who is found to have broken the rules, principally to have failed a doping test. India has been out in the cold since last December when the EB suspended it from the IOC after Lalit Bhanot, who is facing corruption charges linked to the scandal-hit New Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010, was elected IOA secretary-general. The IOC wanted the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to

amend its constitution so that officials facing criminal or corruption proceedings in court would be kept out of the IOA election process. However, the stand-off looks set to continue for the IOA as on August 25 it rejected the IOC’s demand. The IOA’s general body decided to bar only those who had been convicted, and not just charged. “We have accepted all the amendments proposed by the IOC, except the charge sheet clause,” senior sports official S. Reghunathan, who chaired the meeting, told reporters. “We have modified that clause so that only those persons who have been convicted by a court for a jail term of two or more years will not be able to contest elections.

FORMULA ONE

Ricciardo appointed as Webber’s successor VIENNA: Australian Daniel Ricciardo (below) was on Monday named as Mark Webber’s successor alongside triple world champion Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull in 2014. The 24-year-old Torro Rosso driver won the race for the coveted drive ahead of former world champion Kimi Raikkonen, with talks between the Finn and Red Bull ending last month. Red Bull team chief Christian Horner announced the Perth-born Ricciardo’s arrival next season in a statement. He said: “It’s fantastic to confirm Daniel as the team’s race driver for 2014. “He’s a very talented youngster, he’s committed, he’s got a great attitude and in the end it was a very logical choice for us to choose Daniel.” Horner added: “He’s got all the attributes that are required to drive for our team: he’s got a great natural ability, he’s a good personality and a great guy to work with. “Daniel knows what the team expects from him; he’ll learn quickly and it’s very much a medium to long term view that we’re taking in developing him.” Ricciardo has been sponsored by Red Bull since 2008 and he started driving for Toro Rosso last year, claiming 22 Formula One points from 42 Grand Prix races. AFP

“If the jail term is for less than two years, the case will be referred to the IOA’s ethics commission.” The amendment was in keeping with Indian law, which says that those facing

charges are allowed to contest parliamentary elections since they are innocent until proven guilty, Reghunathan said. The diluted version means influential sports officials such as Bhanot and Suresh Kalmadi,

who is also on trial for corruption linked to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, can stand for IOA elections. The calls for sanctions against the entourage of an athlete have grown over the years as doctors or coaches of athletes who have failed dope tests have simply moved on to another potential star while the athlete themselves have been the only one punished. However, Sergey Bubka, head of the Entourage Commission set up by Jacques Rogge to look into the problem, has now put together their recommendations, a copy of which AFP has obtained. They have laid out 13 instances where a member of the entourage can be held accountable from doping violations to match-fixing as well as ones directly protecting the athlete from ‘any form of harassment or

abuse (physical, professional, sexual, mental)’. They also recommend that the member of the entourage will also potentially face punishment if their athlete is found to have broken the rules even if they were not aware he or she was doing so. ‘Members of an Athlete’s entourage may also be sanctioned for the acts and/or omissions of persons over whom they have influence or for whom they are responsible’ reads the recommendation. They also call for ‘Sporting Entities should put in place mechanisms, such as educational programs, so as to allow that members of an Athlete’s entourage are aware of and understand the rules applicable to them.’ With regard to possible sanctions they list nine including a reprimand to fines but also ‘Permanent exclusion from the event/Sporting Entities (club, National Federation, sport, International Federation)’ while an agent can also have his license withdrawn. DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP

Stenson wins title

NORTON: Henrik Stenson, who had two runner-up PGA Tour finishes in 2013, broke through for his first win of the season, shooting a five-under 66 to capture the Deutsche Bank Championship. The 37-year-old Swede also moved into first place in the FedEx Cup playoff standings with the victory, surpassing Tiger Woods for the overall lead. Stenson, who won on the PGA Tour for the first time in over three years, finished at 22-under 262 in a Monday finish to tie the tournament scoring record at the TPC Boston. “I’m just pleased I won here," said Stenson. “This was a big goal of mine to win a golf tournament after all those nice finishes." American Steve Stricker, 46, finished two shots back in second place. Stricker’s performance earned him a spot on Team USA after he improved to seventh from 11th in the President’s Cup standings.

Canada’s Graham DeLaet shot 69 to finish alone in third and 54-hole round leader Sergio Garcia, of Spain, shot a two-over 73 to tie for fourth with three Americans, Jordan Spieth (62), Matt Kuchar (66) and Kevin Stadler (68). The Deutsche Bank event is the second leg of the four-tournament FeEx Cup playoffs which until Monday was led by Woods. Woods stumbled to a two-over 73 Monday and finished in a tie for 65th. “It wasn’t my week. I didn’t play well and didn’t make anything," Woods said. “I didn’t have it today." The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings advance to the third playoff event, the BMW Championship, which begins September 12. Heavy rains all week led to low scores and plenty of delays, including two more on Monday. The third round was completed in near darkness after a lengthy weather delay. Some players had started their

third rounds, but the long stoppage forced organizers to erase that play and have players go out in threesomes of split tees. Stenson, from Gothenburg, posted his first win on the PGA Tour since the 2009 Players Championship by rolling in six birdies in a Monday finish. Stenson finished second at The Open Championship and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational followed by a third at this year’s PGA Championship. On Monday, Stenson made bogey on No. 2 but then birdied five straight holes beginning at No. 4. He compiled a three-shot lead through eight holes. “It’s been long, hard work getting back to this place," he said. “There’s no magic, no quick fix. It’s just hard work."

RELIGION TROUBLE

INDIA IN SOUTH AFRICA

No beer logo for Muslim Ahmed SYDNEY: Cricket Australia has agreed to a request by Muslim leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed not to wear the sponsorship logo of beer brand VB because of his faith’s ban on alcohol. Pakistan-born Ahmed, who became an Australian citizen in July after his application was fast-tracked, did not have the brewer’s logo on his shirt during his international debut in last week’s T20 matches against England. Mike McKenna, Cricket Australia’s executive general manager for operations, said Tuesday the player first raised the issue when he was

selected for the Australia A tour of Britain in June. “Fawad expressed discomfort with the conflict this created for him, due to his religious beliefs," he said. “Cricket Australia and

Carlton United Breweries (CUB) are respectful of Fawad’s personal beliefs and have agreed with his request to wear an unbranded shirt. “CUB have been a longstanding partner of Australian cricket for more than 17 years and Fawad was thankful for their understanding of his personal situation." South African batsman Hashim Amla, also a Muslim, is another player in a similar situation and has been permitted not to wear the logo of Cricket South Africa sponsor Castle, a beer company, on his kit. TOUR OF SPAIN

Christopher wins stage 10 MADRID: America’s Christopher Horner (in pic) moved back into the leader’s red jersey after winning the 10th stage of the Tour of Spain on Monday. It was the RadioShack rider’s second stage win of this year’s Vuelta following his third stage success that also saw the 41year-old wear red for a day, before losing it to Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali. The Astana rider finished second on the punishing mountainous 187km stage from Torredelcampo to Alto de Haza Llana, which included 18 per-

cent ramps in the final stages, losing 48 seconds to the American with Spaniard Alejandro Valverde third at just

over a minute back. Horner paid tribute to his time-trial specialist teammate Fabian Cancellara for his help on the stage. “I’ve got to thank my teammate Fabian Cancellara who worked for me for most of the stage," said the American. “I had one worry which was seeing how to attack on such a tough (mountain) pass to win the stage, especially given that in the group there was Nibali, (Ivan) Basso, Purito (Joaquim Rodriguez), Valverde.” AFP

India set to trim tour

JOHANNESBURG: India’s reluctance to undertake a full tour of South Africa from November appears to have dashed the hosts’ hopes of cashing in on the popularity of the reigning world champions. South Africa released in July a proposed 12-match schedule for a tour by India, including three Tests, seven ODIs and two Twenty20 (T20) matches. But India have belatedly invited the West Indies to tour in November and also brought forward the start of a January visit to New Zealand, greatly reducing the time available for matches in South Africa. Although India were the first country to accept a visit by South Africa when apartheid crumbled two decades ago, current cricket links appear frosty. Indian officials had run-ins with South African Haroon Lorgat when he was chief executive of the ICC over various issues. And his recent appointment to a similar position with Cricket

South Africa (CSA) did nothing to thaw relations. “We have not had any communication from the BCCI about our tour or their West Indies series," Lorgat said Monday. “Until we speak to BCCI officials we will refrain from commenting on this." Lorgat said after his CSA appointment that improving ties with India was a priority. “If I need to sit across a table, to go to India, whatever it takes to smooth things over ... I have to put CSA first. “When the issues come out, if it means that I have offended someone and I need to apologise, I will." The South Africans planned an Indian tour that started with a T20 match at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on November 19 and ended with a Test from January 15 at the same venue. Reports from India suggest the schedule could be almost halved to seven matches — two Tests, three ODIs and two T20 games. AFP

Federer crashes out

Federer’s failure thwarted a potential quarterfinal match with 12-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, in what would have been their first meeting on the New York hardcourts. JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse NEW YORK: Roger Federer suffered a stunning upset in the fourth round of the US Open, the 17-time Grand Slam champion falling to Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo 7-6 (7/3), 6-3, 64 in a last-16 match Monday. Federer’s failure, on the heels of a shock second-round Wimbledon exit, thwarted a potential quarter-final match with 12-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, in what would have been their first meeting on the New York hardcourts. “If I’m playing like this, I’m not going to beat Rafa," five-time US Open champion Federer said. Instead, it will be Robredo, in his first US Open quarter-final, awaiting the winner of a later match between Nadal, who is 6-0 against his countryman, and Germany’s 22nd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber. Robredo, who had lost his 10

prior matches against Federer, suffered seven prior fourthround US Open defeats and matched his best Grand Slam performance by finally breaking through. “To beat Roger, it’s something amazing," Robredo said. “It’s like a dream. I am so happy. It was a great day." Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer reached his eighth consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final, hitting 13 aces among his 46 winners to defeat Serbian 18th seed Janko Tipsarevic 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 75, 7-6 (7/3) in a rematch of a 2012 US Open quarter-final. Ferrer will face the winner of a later match between French eighth seed Richard Gasquet and Canadian 10th seed Milos Raonic. In taking as many sets off Federer as he had in 10 prior losses combined, Robredo also raised questions about the future of the former world number one, who had not missed the US Open quarter-finals since a 2003

fourth-round exit. “I’m going to feel like I beat myself," Federer said. “It was up to me to make the difference and I just couldn’t. “I self-destructed, which is really disappointing. When things came to the crunch I just

couldn’t do it. It’s frustrating." Federer, 32, won only two of 16 break-point chances. “I’m delighted. Today the difference is I won the break points and he did not," said Robredo. Federer hit 45 winners but

also made 43 unforced errors and managed only five aces while Robredo hit 70% of his first serves and won four of his seven break chances. Federer had made 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearances before being upset by Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round at Wimbledon, having not departed a major before the last eight since the 2004 French Open. This was the first year since 2002 that Federer has not made a Grand Slam final. It was the first time Federer has missed the lasteight in consecutive Slams since the 2003 Australian and French Opens, just before he won his first major crown at Wimbledon later that same year. Federer, whose seventh seeding at the US Open was his lowest at a Grand Slam event since 2002, failed to match the career record of 41 Slam quarter-finals by retired US star Jimmy Connors.

Nadal fights back to Roger Federer vows to fight on reach quarterfinals NEW YORK: After crashing out in the fourth round of the US Open Roger Federer shrugged off any notion he might quit after Monday’s loss. “I’ve definitely got to go back to work and come back stronger, get rid of this loss now as quick as I can, forget about it, because that’s not how I want to play from here on," Federer said. “I want to play better. I know I can." Federer fell to Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo 7-6

DAVE JAMES Agence France-Presse NEW YORK: World number two Rafael Nadal avoided the same fate which befell Roger Federer to reach the US Open quarter-finals on Monday with a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 win over German 22nd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber. Nadal, the 2010 champion in New York, stayed on course for a 13th Grand Slam title and will next face fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo, who shocked 17-time major winner Federer 7-6 (7/3), 6-3, 6-4. Second seed Nadal fired 48 winners and took his year record to 57 wins against just three defeats and his perfect hardcourt form to 19 wins. He also preserved his record this year at the tournament of not having dropped serve, although he had a rocky start to the evening against the big-hitting Kohlschreiber,

who finished with 49 winners but 47 unforced errors. Nadal certainly had the 29-year-old German under the cosh throughout their last-16 tie, carving out 21 break points, converting five. “It was very tough tonight with the humid conditions, I was sweating too much," said Nadal after three hours and 12 minutes on court. “I had chances in the first set but couldn’t take them. I feel lucky to be through as it was physically tough. AFP

(7/3), 6-3, 6-4, dooming hopes for a potential quarter-final match with 12-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, what would have been their first meeting on the New York hardcourts. The 32-year-old Swiss star won only two of 16 break-point chances and while he smacked 45 winners, including five aces, he also made 43 unforced errors, an underwhelming effort from a player who once dominated the sport.

“The story of my life — when I lose, people are shell shocked to see me play this way. If I win, it’s the best thing," Federer said. “I can see that. But there’s no doubt about it, I’m trying hard out there trying to make it work. “Sometimes it just doesn’t happen." That shattered aura of invincibility gives opponents like Robredo, who says that “Roger for the moment is the best player of all times," the idea they can defeat Federer now. AFP

Gasquet reaches last eight NEW YORK: French eighth seed Richard Gasquet (in pic) advanced to the US Open quarter-finals Monday by beating Canadian 10th seed Milos Raonic 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-6 (11/9), 7-5 after four hours and 40 minutes. Gasquet, whose only prior fourth-round win in 17 Grand Slam attempts came on his way to the 2007 Wimbledon semi-final, will face Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer in the quarter-finals. Ferrer is 8-1 all-time against Gasquet. Raonic fired 39 aces, the third most in a men’s match in US Open history, but could not become the first Canadian man in a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Mike Belkin at the 1968 Australian Open.

Arsenal get Ozil, Utd sign Fellaini Arsenal smashed their transfer record by luring German playmaker Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, while United made a late move to sign Marouane Fellaini from Everton. TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Arsenal smashed their transfer record by luring German playmaker Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on Monday, while Manchester United made a late move to sign Marouane Fellaini from Everton. Amid dizzying activity in the closing hours of the close-season transfer window, Arsenal grabbed the headlines with a sensational swoop for Ozil worth a reported fee of £42.4 million ($66 million, 50 million euros). The move came on the day that Gareth Bale was presented as a Madrid player after leaving Arsenal’s arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of around £80 million, paving the way for Ozil’s exit. Arsenal said Ozil had signed a “long-term contract,” with a reported duration of five years, after he underwent a medical examination in Munich. “We are extremely pleased to have signed Mesut Ozil,” said long-serving Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who had come under pressure from the club’s fans to deliver a major signing. “We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.” Ozil told the Arsenal website:

“I am thrilled to be joining a club of the stature of Arsenal and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League.” Arsenal, who had never previously spent more than £15 million on a player, also announced the signing of 27-year-old Italy

international goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano from Palermo on a season-long loan. Ozil’s transfer was the most significant development on a day when gross spending by Premier League clubs during the closeseason transfer window sur-

passed £500 million for the first time, according to financial consultants Deloitte. After a frustrating first summer as United manager, David Moyes brought in Belgian midfielder Fellaini, with whom he worked at Everton, in a deal

LONDON: Following are the 10 biggest transfers involving English clubs to have taken place since the end of the 2012-13 season in the Premier League. GARETH BALE (Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid/ESP; £77-86 million) MESUT OZIL (Real Madrid/ESP to Arsenal; £42.4 million) ERIK LAMELA (Roma/ITA to Tottenham Hotspur; £30 million) WILLIAN (Anzhi Makhachkala/RUS to Chelsea; £30 million) FERNANDINHO (Shakhtar Donetsk/UKR to Manchester City; £30 million) MAROUANE FELLAINI (Everton to Manchester United; £27.5 million) ROBERTO SOLDADO (Valencia/ESP to Tottenham Hotspur; £26 million) STEVAN JOVETIC (Fiorentina/ITA to Manchester City; £22 million) ALVARO NEGREDO (Sevilla/ESP to Manchester City; £20 million) ANDRE SCHUERRLE (Bayer Leverkusen/GER to Chelsea; £18 million)

worth £27.5 million. “Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Everton,” said a statement on United’s website.

DEAL SEALED

Bale unfazed by pressure of huge price MADRID: Gareth Bale insists he will not be overcome by the pressure of his huge price tag after being officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player in front of 20,000 fans on Monday. Bale’s protracted transfer from Tottenham Hotspur was finally completed on Sunday evening, with contrasting reports over whether he had become the most expensive player in the history of the game. English media reported Bale’s transfer had broken the record Real paid for Cristiano Ronaldo four years ago at 101 million euros ($133.5 million, £86 million), while in Spain

reports citing Real Madrid sources said the deal was concluded for 91 million euros, three million less than the sum paid for Ronaldo. B a l e refused to clarify the situation, saying he was more focused on living up to the standards he sets himself on the pitch. “I wanted to come

here even if it was for a penny,” he told a packed press conference. “I don’t think any player really knows their price tag. It is something between the two clubs and not really my place to say. The pressure is just as much pressure as I put on myself. I have come here to play the best football I can and I’m going to give 100 percent and try to help the team to win things.”

There has been fevered conjecture over how Ronaldo and Bale will co-exist both on and off the field. However, the Welshman reiterated his belief that it is the Portuguese who remains the better player and more senior figure at the club. “Ronaldo is the boss here, he’s the main player and the best player in the world so I want to learn off him. “It will be an honour to play with him. I think we’ll have a great team and I hope we win a lot of trophies together.”

The 24-year-old arrived in the Spanish capital on Sunday night before undergoing a medical on Monday morning, which he passed without any problems despite not having played since mid-July due to an apparent foot injury. Bale will fly back to Britain to meet up with the Wales squad on Monday evening ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Serbia in the coming week. And he is hoping the match practice gained in those matches will mean he will be ready to make his debut when Real travel to Villarreal on September 14.
