‘India can be trendsetter for fuller models’ She has walked the ramp for top fashion houses like Valentino, Chanel and Oscar de la Renta, but Russian model Anastasia Kuznetsova is in awe of curvy Indian models.
A land of romance The South Wales coastline boasts cosmopolitan metropolises, castles and a medieval charm. Wales is one of the world’s smallest countries, but not too small for the Cardiff City FC, which will compete in the Premier League for the first time, or even for Gareth Bale who could become the costliest football player in history.

While economists and social leaders posit that an independent Telangana State is unviable, here is a positive signal — Telangana region can make huge profits on the State Transport front. The TSRTC could rake in cash... here is how. ALTERED FOR REPRESENTATIVE PURPOSE

n the backdrop of the dismal economic scenario of the nascent state, Telangana, is a bright spot. The APSRTC which is in deep debts can be a happy story when Telangana State is formed. It is mainly because most of the APSRTC’s immovable property are in Telangana region and many of them are mortgaged by the State. Telangana Mazdoor Union (TMU), the APSRTC’s Telangana union says that the total property share of Telangana in APSRTC is 70 per cent while Seemandhra has just 30 per cent. Even if the Andhra state demands a share of Telangana’s geographical advantage will put it in an upper hand. Union believes that the separation wouldn’t affect corporation in Telangana division as it
Majority of people in Telangana use buses while those in Andhra do not. This suits the Corporation. There’s no way Telagnana SRTC can lose as APSRTC does Prakash, TMU Executive member
has an advantage of huge sources of income and all the required infrastructure in the region comparing Seemandhra as they have to built infrastructure from beginning. According to the working president, TMU, “the RTC is facing huge loss of `4.5 crore and
paying `1.5 crore interest per day from the income generated by the corporation, due to the wrong policies and negligence of the government”. The funds and revenue generating by the corporation is being funneled into Andhra must stop forthwith. Talking about the employees’
percentage in the corporation, he said that “the employees from Telangana are 48 per cent and 52 percent from Andhra, the majority is on deputation, who are appointed for Andhra but posted in Hyderabad. The government should take these officials back as it creates opportunity for
Telangana people”. He also alleged that the government is partial about Andhra and provided all the luxuries and facilities to Andhra people while Telangana is being neglected continually. TMU executive member, Prakash, urged that number of the depots in Telangana should be increased as it has just 93 depots while the total number of depots in Andhra Pradesh is 212, most of the people in Telangana travel in buses and in proportion to the population the number of depots are very less. The officials of APSRTC are not much worried about separation of the State and saying that since the corporation is an organised sector, divided in the zones and regions throughout the State, it’s not a big deal to handle the situation. GV Ramana Rao, executive director (O, MIS & AM) APSRTC, said that since Hyderabad is going to be the joint capital for the next 10 years, the corporation will have more time to settle the requirements of Andhra. Speaking about the antidivision agitation’s effect in Seemandhra, Rao said the APSRTC suffering loss of about `7 crore daily on an average. Since Telangana was announced, more than 30 per cent of buses were damaged and operations are badly affected in some of the areas in the districts of Rayalaseema.
Arrest of woman kicks up a row Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
A
rrest of a woman crier who moves along the streets with her wares in a bundle slung over her shoulders was arrested on suspicion of child-lifting as she happens to have been carrying her baby too in the bag. This has snowballed into a controversy with people
accusing police of highhandedness. The woman , Shanaaz begum, in her early ‘thirties was taken to Charminar police station on Saturday. She pleaded that she is a maid in Talabkatta. She sells old sarees and dress materials during her spare time and as she is a nursing mother with a baby girl, she carries the baby in the shoulder bag.
IN A BRAZEN INCIDENT, THE GUARDIANS OF LAW CONDUCTED THEMSELVES WORSE THAN A VIGILANTE MOB, AND ABUSED A NURSING MOTHER AND HER KIN — BASED ON MERE SUSPICION.
Some people suspected her to be child-lifter and reported the matter to the police. It is said on receiving the news her 18-year-old son Shaik Nabi and her daughter reached the police station but they were allegedly abused and beaten up. The woman was also reportedly assaulted by the cops. Meanwhile, the owner of
shop where Shaik Nabi works approached the police station and told that he had given zakat sarees to Shahnaaz Begum to sell. But none of the could convince police, it is alleged. After a long hassle the woman was allowed to go home. It was the assistant commissioner of police (Charminar) who intervened and arranged for her release.

Are you kidding me? This reader does not agree that the sweetness of Mohammed Rafi’s voice waned as he grew older. ‘...lost the sweetness in his voice…’?? I don’t remember Rafi ever losing any sweetness. Beware of the Naxals Our readers have various concerns when the State will be bifurcated. Some worry about insurgency and terrorist elements and others say Brand Hyderabad is going to stay unaffected. he major problem will be Naxals and terrorist groups. As Telangana is being formed all our leaders will be partying or arguing for positions, infiltrators will have infested the city and then as time passes, it will be a huge problem for not just for Hyderabad, but for the whole nation. I urge the leaders and the police department to be vigilant. I was a born and brought up a Telanganite, but when it comes to security issue I feel United Andhra Pradesh will solve the problem. As euphoria ends, brand Hyderabad weeps have to respectfully disagree with the premise of your report. Hyderabad is not built or developed by just settlers from Andhra and Rayalaseema. It has a history of 450 years and the settlers here are not just from Seemaandhra but Bengalis (the Bengali association with Hyderabad goes back to more than 80 years) Marathis, Kannadigas,

Punjabis, Rajasthanis, Gujaratis and even people of Arabi, Yemeni and Sudanese ethnicity. There are also others from different countries in West Asia and Africa. They never had a problem with Hyderabad — only Seemandhra rulers do. Now they have been sized rightly and will be treated like in any other city in this country. The whole country is looking forward to a well-governed Telangana state. Telangana’s weather and abundant natural resources will invite people from all other parts to come and do business here: I have no doubt about it in the least.
OVER-HYPED This reader says all the claims of Seemandhra people about their blood, sweat and tears going in vain is over-hyped.
e have been given to understand that Seemandhra people invested and played a part in the development of Hyderabad, but to say that they gave the Hitec City, airport etc to Hyderabad is wrong. They invested for their

benefit and returns: it was not charity. Hyderabad has been a rich and vibrant city for the past 400 years. After independence, it was the richest place in the country.

TOP LETTER
You will not find such an atmosphere of cross-cultural coexistence in Seemandhra. Telangana has harmony and a cordial business environment on par with any other. So predicting the future of Telangana based upon on the opinions of some settlers is wrong. They lived, earned, made a life out of this region and then talk nonsense about the same place that fed them. But Brand Hyderabad will not be hit by the state bifurcation.

From red-light zone to the Bard college Mumbai teenager leaves red-light zone for US degree MUMBAI: A young Indian woman who grew up in Mumbai’s red-light district facing poverty and sexual abuse has overcome the odds to win a scholarship to study in New York. Shweta Katti, 18, left for America on Thursday to study at the liberal arts Bard College, where she hopes to read psychology. Afterwards she wants to return to India and help other young women in her community. “It’s my childhood dream. I didn’t think it would finally happen,” she told AFP before leaving Mumbai, where she grew up in a brothel. Katti’s determination won her a place this year in Newsweek’s list of 25 “Young Women To Watch” aged under-25, alongside Pakistani schoolgirl and activist Malala Yousufzai who was shot in the head by the Taliban. It is a long way from Katti’s early childhood experiences of abuse and harassment in Mumbai’s notorious Kamathipura neighbourhood. “You would see everyday someone beating up a woman, the police coming unexpectedly at anytime, and women selling their bodies — they were not happy,” Katti said. “Men would ask to sleep with me, it was so embarrassing, but I had to face it. My father abused me, many people abused me, but my mum was with me always saying: ‘You are the best, you can do anything’.” The teenager, who describes herself as “a tough-skinned girl”, said she faced discrimination “from all sides” at school because of her poor background and low caste status.
Driver’s daughter bags US $50,000 scholarship CHANDIGARH: Poonam Dhull, daughter of a driver working for the government of Haryana, has bagged a $ 50,000 scholarship to pursue a doctorate in the US. Poonam, 24, was awarded the scholarship for pursuing PhD in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina. Her father, Suresh Pal, works as a driver with the public relations department. Poonam is presently a research student in the Department of Chemistry in Panjab University here. She pursued research work under the supervision of P Venugopalan who guided her on the project “Structure-activity relationships in a-fluorohydrins and their derivatives: A structural investigation”.
water supply schemes in Kishtwar district were damaged in the earthquake and efforts are on to restore them. A senior official of the public health engineering (PHE) department said it would take many days to restore the damaged water supply schemes as the tremor caused massive damage. Electricity supply to Kishtwar town was also disrupted because of the earthquake, but officials said it has now been restored. Many residents in Kishtwar spent the night under the sky as
fears of aftershocks prevented them from venturing into their homes. The district magistrate Kishtwar has ordered closure of all educational institutions for two days to ensure safety of children. The hilly Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Ramban districts of Jammu region — known as the Chenab Valley — have been witnessing periodic tremors for more than four months now. Scientists have been blaming water storage dams of hydro power projects in the region for destabilising the equilibrium.

Morocco fumes at royal pardon for Spanish paedophile

Moroccans furious over the pardon of a Spanish paedophile convicted of raping 11 children aged between four and 15, are planning more protests as the king on Saturday announced an investigation into his release. RABAT: Moroccans furious over the pardon of a Spanish paedophile convicted of raping 11 children aged between four and 15, are planning more protests as the king on Saturday announced an investigation into his release. Social media sites have called for fresh protests in Casablanca and Rabat next week after batonwielding police dispersed demonstrations on Friday. Daniel Galvan Vina, said to be in his 60s, was pardoned by King Mohammed VI and freed on Tuesday from jail in Kenitra, north of the capital. He had been sentenced in September 2011 to 30 years in prison. Galvan was among 48 Spanish prisoners released in response to a request
from Spanish King Juan Carlos, who visited Morocco in mid-July, the justice ministry said. But royal palace said in a statement carried on Morocco’s official MAP news agency that the king had been unaware of the nature of Galvan’s crimes and had ordered a probe into his release. The investigation should “determine the responsibilities and the failures that led to this regrettable release," the statement said. “The king was never informed — in any way or at any time — of the seriousness of the abject crimes of which the person concerned was convicted," the palace added. “It is clear that the sovereign would never have consented” to his release, given the “monstrous crimes” committed, the statement concluded. Galvan is thought to have already left the country. The incident has sparked outrage in the north African country, which has seen several highprofile paedophile arrests in recent months. On Friday night, baton-wielding police dispersed several thou-
sand people who tried to protest in front of the parliament in Rabat. Dozens were injured, including reporters and news photographers, and some had to be hospitalised. Others were held outside the Moroccan embassy in Paris on Saturday and in Kenitra, where the man had been held. Police also broke up demonstrations in Tanger and Tetouan. Protesters slammed the pardon as “an international shame” with one demonstrator saying the state “defends the rape of Moroccan children". One young woman student told AFP: “This is the first time I have been to a demonstration because I am outraged by this pardon which has set this paedophile free." In June, thousands of Moroccans marched in Casablanca to condemn paedophilia and violence against children in the north African country. On June 20, police arrested a suspected British paedophile after local residents overheard screams from a six-year-old girl he allegedly abducted.

Canada to shut 10 hurt in Turkey Rowhani takes office, during protests vows to save economy Dhaka mission ISTANBUL: Turkish riot police on Saturday fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds of antigovernment protesters in Istanbul, leaving many injured. At least 10 people were injured and dozens arrested, according to AFP journalists, in fresh protests which broke out near Taksim square, the epicentre of violent demonstrations which rocked the country in June. At least three journalists, including an AFP photographer, were injured by rubber bullets during the clashes. Some 300 protesters had gathered early Saturday evening in support of the Gezi protest movement which rocked Turkey two months ago, and catand-mouse games with police continued into the night.
TEHRAN: Moderate cleric Hassan Rowhani assumed Iran’s presidency on Saturday promising to work to lift punishing international sanctions imposed on the Islamic republic over its controversial nuclear programme. Rowhani, 64, officially became the Islamic republic’s seventh president after receiving a formal endorsement from supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at a Tehran ceremony. His public inauguration will take place on Sunday when he takes the oath of office in parliament, which according to media reports will be attended by 10 regional presidents and other high-ranking foreign officials. Rowhani begins his four-year term as Iran faces grave challenges over its ailing economy and international isolation.
OTTAWA: Canada will shutter its mission in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Sunday, a spokesman said, citing security reasons amid global concern over terror threats. The United States has ordered its embassies across the Islamic world to close temporarily, while Germany, Britain and France said they would shut their missions in Yemen for at least two days. Canada said that its mission in Dhaka would be closed on Sunday as a security precaution. “We take the safety and security of our personnel and our missions overseas very seriously," said Emma Welford, a spokeswoman for Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. “We will continue to monitor events closely and take security measures.”

FOR AN AUGUST FRIENDSHIP’S SAKE
EDITORIALS
TOO MANY EGGS in BPO basket Around 3 million people in India work in the outsourcing sector, the annual revenues of which are around $12 billion, which works out to about 1 per cent of our GDP. A considerable percentage of this is US based. One of the world’s largest graduate producers, around 2.5 million people graduate in India every year, for whom the sector has made a huge difference, given their basic English skills. Still, wages are rising by 10-15 per cent as a result of skill shortage. Analysts believe that India remains a very important destination for outsourcing and expect its annual GDP to grow at 8-10 per cent for the next decade. A group of US lawmakers has introduced legislation in the Congress that would make it tough for companies to outsource their call centres overseas including India. The legislation requires overseas call centre employees to disclose their location to US consumers and gives customers the right to be transferred to a US-based call centre upon request. The ploy is that the US Department of Labour will track firms that move call centre jobs overseas; the firms would then be ineligible for any direct or indirect federal loans or loan guarantees for three years. If the bill is passed, it is going to hit India hard and we have only ourselves to blame for it. Very obviously the sector made a huge difference to the common man, but the mistake was in getting over dependent on it. Strategic diversification of resources will help us overcome this roadblock.
TO TWEET or not to tweet Such is the temperature in the cauldron that a state Assembly is in the country that even a valid observation raises a storm when voiced, especially through a tweet. Parvez Rasool should have been played in the final match of a dead rubber with India 4-0 of an obligatory Zimbabwe tour like Omar Abdullah mentioned. Or, have we finally developed that killer instinct?

SYED SHOAIB
I
n this age of greed, it’s really difficult to spell out a friend in need or indeed. Most believe that friendships made at a young age are the strongest, but do they last? Friends change with time and most are made for convenience at later stages. However, childhood and high-school friends are people who provide us with a historic timeline and offer a different version of our truth, secrets and confidences that we didn’t reveal to our parents or siblings. The New Oxford American Dictionary states that a friend is a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations. Yet some people call their spouses or parents their best friends! Blood is thicker than water but both blood and water are basic to life. If we’re someone’s friend, it means that we have chosen that person through mutual affinity and interest. There are many
ways and places to find friends in our everyday life, including college, social or sporting events, the workplace, our child’s friend’s parents, our neighbours, the Internet, personal introductions, etc. We are not born into a friendship — we’re in someone’s life because we chose each other. If we want to have good friends we have to learn how to be a great friend. Many times when there is an imbalance in our life, our friendships suffer — depending on whether we’re givers or takers. Wonder, is it difficult to make friends or keep friends? The first Sunday in August every year is celebrated as International Friendship Day. The tradition of dedicating a day in honour of friends began in US in 1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in a large number of countries including India. Whether you say Friendship Day has become commercialised like other days or hyped by the media, it is a festival in schools and colleges. As it turns out to be on a Sunday, I guess it is the restaurants and clubs that actually make the most out of it. SMS and e-cards is the answer to friends separated by geographi-
cal distances. The Internet also creates new wired friends in an era where the warmth of physical company is replaced by finger communication. Friendship Day was originally promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be 2 August and a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards. In honour of Friendship Day in 1998, Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations.
THE INTERNET ALSO CREATES NEW WIRED FRIENDS IN AN ERA WHERE THE WARMTH OF PHYSICAL COMPANY IS REPLACED BY FINGER COMMUNICATION. India’s first Friendship Day was the Anuvrat Movement, founded by the Jain spiritual leader Acharya Tulsi in 1949 as a way to develop the newly independent nation. Such smallscale festivities might disappoint the founders of India’s
first Friendship Day. The answer, he felt, was not to force people to try for major life changes at which they might fail, but get them to commit to taking several small vows (anu vrat) that they might keep. The vows Acharya Tulsi listed were on the lines of not stealing, not eating meat and not drinking, which would make visiting pubs for party purposes with friends a bit of a problem. The Anuvrat Movement had some success through the 1950s, and in 1958 they decided to go big with the call for a ‘Friendship Day’ to promote international peace and happiness. Between the sexes, friendship can be mistaken for different kinds of relationships. Remember the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai where, early on, Shah Rukh Khan’s character is shown handing out Friendship Day bands to any girl he fancies in his college. The film was released in 1998 not long after Archies started pushing Friendship Day in 1995 (Hallmark, which is now partnered with Archies, but was with a rival then, also started advertising it around 1997). Today starts with you — it’s not the band that matters it’s the bond!

Militant unionism reshapes S Africa platinum industry Johannes Myburgh
JOHANNESBURG: A militant South African labour union has wrested majority control at the world’s richest platinum mines, shaking up the industry and potentially boding ill for the ruling ANC, analysts say. The dominance by the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) comes after it gained worldwide notoriety last year in a violent strike that saw police shoot dead 34 miners. Nearly a year later, workers en masse have abandoned the seemingly once-untouchable, ANC-allied National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which shed 41,000 members countrywide in 2012. The stakes are high, said mining analyst Peter Major from financial services group Cadiz. “This two-union duke-out means power, money, political and economic clout and prestige for the winner,” he told AFP. With wage bargaining rights, cars and on-site offices among the victor’s perks, the bitter, sometimes deadly rivalry has raised fears of further unrest after paralysing stoppages and bloodshed last year. AMCU now holds sway at the three largest platinum miners who employ a combined 84,000 workers northwest of Johannesburg. The union represents 40 per
stewards transform into “election foot soldiers going door-todoor campaigning for the ANC”. “Arguably one of the most significant social and political bases of the alliance has been eroded and has possible implications for elections,” he said. The ANC, which is facing increasing frustration from South Africans ahead of polls next year, has rallied to win back the union’s lost ground. “Rise and defend the NUM. Go into the informal settlements to recruit for NUM and the ANC,” a regional leader told a campaign in Marikana a week ago. But the lost membership’s effect on votes is still unclear, according to political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi.

cent at world number one producer Anglo American Platinum, 58 per cent at Impala Platinum’s Rustenburg operations, and 70 per cent of workers at Lonmin. AMCU’s meteoric rise flipped the situation from just a year ago, when NUM had 65 per cent at Implats and 50 per cent at Lonmin. NUM’s fall from favour cuts to the heart of its parent federation, the Congress of South
African Trade Unions (Cosatu), which is a key ally of the African National Congress. The last time such radical changes were seen was during the rise of black unionism under apartheid in the early 1980s. “This is the biggest upheaval since NUM was allowed in 1981,” said Major, pointing to the year that union organisers were granted access to the country’s mines. AMCU has shrewdly used its
newfound influence to strengthen its base, while capitalising on accusations that the NUM has abandoned workers by cosying up to the political elite. The upstart’s gain in the Rustenburg platinum belt is a loss for the ANC, which has relied on its union allies to drum up support for elections. Paul Stewart, mine sociology expert at the University of the Witwatersrand, said election time usually saw NUM shaft
AND INSTABILITY
Also unknown is the longterm impact on the platinum industry which is facing job cuts on the back of heavy 2012 profit falls. Several assassinations have taken place on both sides, and a hit on a prominent AMCU leader led to a wildcat strike at Lonmin in May. After forcing hefty pay hikes by sidestepping historic wage negotiation channels, AMCU is demanding increased concessions from mining companies and the government. At the same time, it is avoiding formal commitments itself.
Audi launches luxury sports line NEW DELHI: German luxury car manufacturer Audi has launched its new range of sports cars in India that have been designed keeping in mind the buyers’ comfort, luxury and lifestyle. The Audi R8 V10+, Audi RS 5, Audi S6 and Audi TT models were unveiled at the ongoing Delhi Couture Week (DCW) 2013, with actress Freida Pinto adding jazz to the ramp. “Audi has a strong con-
nection and competence in style and design worldwide... Our new sporty line as a part of the Audi 2014 autumn collection not only underlines our extraordinary expertise in design and lifestyle, but also clearly establishes us as a performance leader,” Audi India head Michael Perschke told IANS. According to Perschke, the Delhi-NCR region has the maximum number of
buyers of the brand in India. Asked about annual sales and business turnover, Perschke said: “There has been an increment in the sale of Audi over all these years mainly because Audi meets the demands of the buyers. The annual turnover was `9,000 crore to `10,500 crore.” The prices of Audi cars have been increased as a result of depreciating rupee and rise in input costs. IANS

A JOB ON THE EDGE
Welcome to Alpesia, an imaginary land created by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) 15 years ago in the woods of Geneva. Agnes Pedrero
Agence France-Presse
GENEVA: “Go, go!” shouts a soldier at five Red Cross aid workers crammed into a 4x4 truck speeding into the woods as explosions go off nearby, sending up plumes of white smoke. The scene feels menacing. But it is in fact taking place far from an real battlefield and just a stone’s throw from a city renowned for its international peace efforts, in one of the safest countries on the planet. Welcome to Alpesia, an imaginary land created by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) 15 years ago in the woods of Geneva. Here the Sequane Liberation Front rebels are facing off against the authorities in a “conflict” tailored to teach new aid workers how to face the increasingly dangerous world they will soon be ushered into. Nearly 200 participants, who have to be between 25 and 35 years old, pass the simulation test each year before joining a profession where armed attacks, kidnappings and hospital bombings are becoming ever more prevalent. In the Swiss woods, they get a taste for what life could be like on mission: military checkpoints, visits to destroyed hospitals and a refugee camp -- all within eight days of practical and theoretical training. Split into groups of five, the new International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegates drive into the forest in 4x4s en route for a refugee camp. But before long they are stopped at a checkpoint. Some of the aid workers are separated from the group by a soldier who keeps them in check
with a real — though hopefully not loaded — assault rifle. Now it is up to the aid workers to talk their way out of the situation and demonstrate they can keep calm, pick their words carefully and convincingly explain their neutrality and their mission. “Sometimes, fake ICRC soldiers take it up a notch if they are not satisfied with the behaviour of the new delegates,”
spokesman Philippe Marc Stoll tells AFP. After the roleplay, the debriefing is harsh. Today, “soldier” Benjamin Eckstein chastises the group for allowing an armed soldier to get into their vehicle, effectively turning it into a “legitimate military target”. “The simulation on the ground was really realistic,” enthuses 29-year-old Italian Gaia

ONCE
ACCIDENTALLY CAUGHT IN CROSSFIRE , NOW A TARGET
But even the best of hostile environment training cannot avert all dangers. Last year “was the most difficult year for the ICRC in security terms since 2003 and 2005”, the organisation’s chief Peter Maurer told reporters last month. In Syria, 20 local Red Crescent workers have been killed since the bloody conflict began in March 2011. Humanitarian groups are facing ever more difficult conditions as conflicts, like the one in Syria, stretch on for longer and longer. In 2011, a record 308 humanitarian workers around the world were killed, kidnapped or wounded, according to the latest available statistics from Humanitarian Outcomes, a USbased group whose data is used by the UN. Most attacks took place in a
small number of countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. Kidnappings especially have been on the rise: in 2012, 87 humanitarian workers were kidnapped worldwide, compared to just 24 in 2002, according to Humanitarian Outcomes. “If you look back 10, 20 years, we have moved from being caught in the crossfire, which was purely incidental, to being... really targeted,” Amin Awad, emergency security chief at the UN refugee agency UNHCR, tells AFP. UNHCR workers preparing to go out into the field are also subjected to mock hostage takings, kidnappings and other stress situations — and also in some of the world’s most peaceful spots, in Germany, Sweden and Norway. “The humanitarian space is shrinking, the environment where we work is becoming increasingly insecure, and staff have to be prepared for the worst,” Awad says. The UN provides basic training for everyone going out on a mission, and for the past five years has also been offering more specific training for each conflict zone, says Jens Laerke, spokesman for the world body’s humanitarian affairs agency.

India can be trendsetter for fuller models: KUZNETSOVA
She has walked the ramp for top international fashion houses like Valentino, Chanel and Oscar de la Renta, but Russian model Anastasia Kuznetsova is in awe of curvy Indian models and feels they can set a new trend on the ramp.
“I
like it when a model is in good shape — not too thin, not too big. India can be a trendsetter for this in the international market,” Kuznetsova said when asked for her opinion on Indian models. The Russian beauty has been in the fashion industry for the past six years and has also modelled for designers such as Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Philip Lim, Kenzo and retail brand Topshop. In 2009, she was also part of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Now, she is set to make her debut on the Indian ramp at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter-Festive 2013. The five-day event will start on August 23 at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. The fashion week will give her an opportunity to connect with Indian fashion. Among other things that she loves about India are her “love for nature, food, and the weather”. “I love to work where I feel happy. All models go to places like Japan, China, and Singapore but why not India? “I want to do Lakme to see what the fashion scene in India is like and know what people here wear. I want to see it from inside and hopefully connect Indian fashion with the international fashion market,” she said. India featured on her wish list after she started practicing yoga. “No, I never thought about India until I started doing yoga. I live in New York and fly to countries like France, Britain, Spain and Russia. One day my yoga teacher invited me to come with

her and the other pupils to Kerala for yoga and Ayurveda... and I said, ‘Yes! why not!” “When I saw India with my eyes, I fell in love with it,” she said, adding that her love for the country has forced her friends to say, ‘Nastya and her India’. Her fascination for everything Indian doesn’t stop here. She also loves watching the sunset in Mumbai. “In May, I flew from London to Mumbai. When I got off the plane, I thought, ‘What am I doing here in this city?’ But a day later, when I saw sunset at the Marine Drive, I was happy and excited to work for fashion and films in this city,” she said and added: “Oh and yes, before I came to Mumbai, I was reading Shantaram. Great book.” The 2003 novel, written by Gregory David Roberts, is the story about a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escapes from a prison to India. She also expressed her love for Bollywood. “I want to learn Bollywood dance! I went to an acting school in London and I would love to be in front of camera for everything — fashion, television and IANS films,” said Kuznetsova.

Artist-designed dinnerware Luke Skywalker and Edward Scissorhands each have a seat at the center of the dinner table in Marco Brambilla’s renditions of the Last Supper. These comical images aren’t found in a chapel—they can be seen on the artist’s newly released dinner plates. The set is one of 13 artist-designed dinnerware collections issued by French porcelain manufacturer Bernardaud.

The six-foot-tall portrait of Damein Hirst, one-time hell-raising leader of the Young British Artists group, now a country-dwelling millionaire, by Jonathan Yeo — who has become the go-to artist for slightly edgy but convincingly recognisable contemporary portraits — will be the centrepiece of an exhibition of his work opening at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

In Australian Aboriginal mythology Baiame (Baayami or Baayama) was the Creator God and Sky Father in the dreaming of several language groups of Indigenous Australians of southeast Australia. The Baiame myth tells how Baiame came down from the sky to the land, and created rivers, mountains, and forests. He then gave the people their laws of life, traditions, songs, and culture. In rock paintings Baiame is often depicted as a human figure with a large head-dress or hairstyle, with lines of footsteps nearby. He is always painted in front view.

the origins of Uluru. One such account, taken from Robert Layton’s (1989) Uluru: An Aboriginal history of Ayers Rock, reads as follows: Uluru was built up during the creation period by two boys who played in the mud after rain. When they had finished their game they travelled south to Wiputa ... Fighting together, the two boys made their way to the table topped Mount Conner, on top of which their bodies are preserved as boulders. SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Clean water boost growth
Selfish traits not favoured
Access to clean water and soap not only improves hygiene but may boost growth in young children, research suggests. A review of global data found evidence of a small increase in height about 0.5cm - in under-fives living in households with good sanitation. The studies took place in Bangladesh, Nigeria, Guatemala, Pakistan, Nepal, South Africa and Cambodia.
Glaciers protect peaks
Evolution does not favour selfish people, according to new research. This challenges a previous theory which suggested it was preferable to put yourself first. Instead, it pays to be co-operative, shown in a model of “the prisoner’s dilemma”, a scenario of game theory - the study of strategic decision-making. The study is published in Nature Communications.
Instead of wearing mountains down, evidence from Europe’s high Alps shows that glaciers shield summits from erosion, acting as a protective lid. French scientists studied erosion on Mont Blanc, western Europe’s highest peak, below and around its glaciers. Cold ice at the highest points froze to the mountain rock and played little part in erosion, the team said.
Nepal to keep closer eye on Everest expeditions
N
epal’s tourism ministry said it plans to exercise tighter control of climbers scaling Mount Everest to make sure they keep the world’s highest peak clean and to prevent rows. The ministry will set up a 10member team made up of government officials, veteran Nepalese climbers and security officers that will start work when the next climbing season opens in the spring. The team will ensure that climbers do not leave trash on the mountain, Purna Chandra Bhattarai, chief of the tourism industry division at the tourism ministry told AFP. “Everest has already earned notoriety as the world’s highest dumping site so we want to make sure each expedition follows the government guideline and does not leave trash,” he said. Late last year, a group of artists staged an exhibition of sculpture made from tonnes of trash collected on Mount Everest, highlighting the toll that decades of mountaineering have taken. Discarded oxygen and cooking gas cylinders, ropes, tents, glasses, beer cans, plastic and even the remains of a heli-

copter made up 75 artworks commissioned for the “Everest 8848 Art Project” displayed in Kathmandu. The team being set up by the tourism ministry would also seek to prevent conflicts among the mountaineers. Tempers sometimes boil over on
the slopes of Everest among climbers who scramble to get to the top. Early in this year’s climbing season, three European climbers exchanged blows with a group of furious Nepalese guides after a dispute over climbing rights on Everest. The
Nepalese claimed the Europeans ignored a request to stay in base camp while ropes were fixed on the Lhotse Face for commercial climbers, but the Europeans claimed they were free to ascend because they did not use ropes. “We want to make sure that an
incident like the one that occurred this season will not be repeated in the future,” Bhattarai said. The fight caused a rift between Western climbers who head to the Himalayas and the often lowly-paid Nepalese guides and porters who are vital for expeditions. Nepal has already made it mandatory for each expedition team to hire liaison officers from the ministry to ensure better relations with locals. On May 29, Nepal marked the 60th anniversary of the first summit of Everest, honouring the family members of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first summiteers. AFP
Climate change also causes spike in violence: Scientists A new study claims that there is scientific ground to predict that climate change, resulting in higher temperatures, would contribute to violence and conflict.
R
esearchers from Princeton University and the University of CaliforniaBerkeley reported in the journal Science that even slight spikes in temperature and precipitation have greatly increased the risk of personal violence and social upheaval throughout human history. Projected onto an Earth that is expected to warm by 2 degrees Celsius by 2050, the authors suggest that more human conflict is a likely outcome, reports Science Daily.
The researchers analysed 60 studies from a number of disciplines — including archaeology, criminology, economics and psychology — that explored the connection between weather and violence in various parts of the world from about 10,000 BCE to the present day. During an 18-month period, the Princeton-Berkeley researchers reviewed those studies’ data — and often recrunched raw numbers — to calculate the risk that violence would rise under hotter, wetter
conditions. They found that while climate is not the sole or primary cause of violence, it undeniably exacerbates existing social and interpersonal tension in all societies, regardless of wealth or stability. They found that one standard-deviation shift — the amount of change from the local norm — in heat or rainfall boosts the risk of a riot, civil war or ethnic conflict by an average of 14 per cent. Teen’s pizza pepper-sprayed
First lab-grown burger
Ice cream churning contest
A sheriff’s deputy in Orange County will be arraigned Monday for allegedly pepper-spraying a teenager’s pizza during a traffic stop. The teen, authorities said, and a group of friends later became sick after eating the pepperspray tainted pizza. Authorities charged Juan Tavera, 30, with one misdemeanor count of assault or battery by a public officer.
The world’s first burger made out of meat grown in a lab is going on the menu. The 5oz patty, created for £250,000, will be served at a secret location to see if it passes the taste test. Prof Mark Post believes our demand for meat will make farming unsustainable, so he and his team used cow stem cells to create 20,000 tiny strips of meat.
Tuscaloosa residents and groups interested in experimenting with homemade ice cream will have the opportunity to test their skills in a local competition. Tuscaloosa Chevrolet and Alabama Credit Union have partnered to host the first Alabama Ice Cream Churning Championships on Aug. 17. Up to 30 teams will be accepted in the competition.

This could very well be the motto of the newly opened Olive Bistro in Jubilee Hills. With its friendly staff, lovely décor and great food, the restaurant washes away all your stress and worry.
W
hen you get to Olive Bistro, take a moment. Soak in the pretty mismatched chairs, the comfy couches and the crazy crockery chandelier. Note the bunches of happy flowers in pots and buckets strewn casually around the space. See Durgam Cheruvu in a whole new
light. Because when you come to Olive Bistro, it is not just about the food. It's about the whole experience of leisure — one we're so unfamiliar with in Hyderabad. The restaurant, tucked away from all the noise and hurry of the City, allows you to forget, for the course of a meal, that you are needed elsewhere. And when you finish luxuriating in the peace and beauty of the bistro, turn your attention to the vast menu. Catering equally to vegetarians and carnivores, the menu brings the best of the Continent to your table. The restaurant doesn't serve alcohol as yet, but offers an interesting set of mocktails. Start with a Grapefruit Lemonade or a Virgin Pina Colada, is Chef Mayank Tiwari's recommendation. The Avalanche, a gingery, mintinfused drink is also a hot seller, as is the orange-based Italian Job. If it is wet and cold outside, try their Cold Smoked Mushroom Veloute soup — a silky, rich soup topped off with some truffle oil. Their chowders, both vegetarian and prawn, are lovely as well. The beetroot, ricotta and candied walnut salad is a classic, but

their Caesar salad is run-of-themill. Besides, with so many interesting options, why would you pick a Caesar salad? On the bar snacks menu is a host of fun finger foods — cot-
tage cheese skewers, ricottastuffed mushrooms, harissa marinated prawns and glazed pork ribs. The pork ribs are smothered in a heavenly glaze that complements the meat perfectly. For the vegetarians, the melt-in-the-mouth mushroom and cottage cheese starters are ideal. Choosing the main course is a difficult task, simply because of the plethora of options. You could go for a hearty hamburger or the massive sandwiches. You could go in for a pastabased dish. Or you could do what we — and everybody at the neighbouring tables — did and order a pizza. The wood oven creations are thin crust with generous toppings and have enough cheese to make anyone happy. Hardcore nonvegetarians could try the Carnivore, which has all sorts of meat atop it. Sprinkle some oregano and chilli flakes and you have yourself a great meal. For a heavier main course, you could try the OB Pepper Crusted Fillet Mignon. The beef is succulent, seasoned well and comes with traditional frites and creamed spinach. The Cottage Cheese and Parmesan steak is a little bit of a let-down. The cottage cheese is lovely and soft, but a little on the bland side. A better choice
would be the sinful cannelloni covered with mozzarella. With three stuffings — artichoke, mushroom and spinach — you get three great flavours in one. And no matter how full you are, do not pass up on having dessert. If you're feeling ambitious, try their signature Insanity Slice. With three layers of differently flavoured mousse separated by genoise and coco sponge, this dessert requires at least three people to finish it off. For those who like a play of textures, go for the Milk Chocolate Ice-Cream Filled Profiteroles. The crunch of the pastry paired with the cold, soft ice-cream and the smooth hazelnut and chocolate sauces is a nice way to end your meal. But the highlight (for me) was eating the best panacotta I've had in Hyderabad. The vanilla panacotta is creamy and silky, and is served with a pink peppercorn and orange sauce. The slightly tart sauce, reminiscent of orange marmalade, elevates the simple panacotta to a whole new level. So head here for a Sunday brunch, a dinner for two, or even just for some coffee with friends. With its beautiful décor, stunning view and great food, Olive Bistro hits all the right notes.

abbagosht, Bohrikichra (bohri Haleem)… rings a bell? These are the delicacies of the Bohra cuisine that originated in Yemen. Let me explain: when the members of the Dawoodi Bohra community, the Mustali subsect of Islamili Shia Islam, travelled to the subcontinent, they brought with them recipes from their land of origin. As they took root here, majorly in Gujarat, they imbibed specialities of their new home’s cuisine with theirs. So what we have now is a blend of Arabian, Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine (Whoah! All that explaning gives me an appetite). The good news is you don’t need to go to Gujarat to savour it. You can do that at the Bohri food festival at Radisson Blu Hotel’s Chill. “I am excited about the festi-
val. I hope people will love it and will come back for it,” says Chef Abdul, who has been flown in from Mumbai to give you the Bohri experience this Ramzan season. You can start with the Bohra starters. For the non vegetarians, there is the Bohri fried chicken and for the vegetarians a mix vegetable cutlet. The cutlets are so good that I did not know the difference. Soup is also available for people who want to start the traditional way. There are the Kefti dal shorba, and Chicken and thyme broth. Let’s not tarry and head for the main delights here for meatlovers. Bohramurgh korma, Dabbagosht, Mutton khichra — if you take to it, I can guarantee that you will not miss the biryani this season. Please make a note to taste the Dabbagosht. For one, I have not seen it on the menus of the many places I have been to, and secondly for
that ultimate mutton experience. If you like your mutton boneless, then this is it. For rice lovers, there’s the Bohrigosht biryani, Bohri khichdi, and steam rice. They say Bohri khichdi is an excellent source of protein and calcium. No doubt: it is made from toovar dal, milk and curds, the essentials that your doctor would tell you to take for healthy bones and speedy repairs in your cells. The vegetarian options in the main course include Dal dudhi, Chanabatana, Lobiyakisubzi, Bohriarbi,
Paneermethikeft and Masala dahibngan. Radisson Blu is popular for dessert and if you have some of the items they serve here, especially at this food festival, you will know why. There’s the Ananas pudding, Sweet bohramalpua and cream, Khajurkahalwa. However, my personal favourites are the

ore often than not, all that the launch of a new menu in a restaurant means more dishes and a significant price revamp. Thankfully, Marriott's Bidri is an exception. Having collected suggestions from patrons and critics over the last year, the restaurant has renewed its signature Riyasati fare (inspired by Persian and Afghani cooking) by now also including choice selections from Punjabi, Nizami, Awadi and Kakatiyan
cuisines. If you are planning to go the four-course way, be prepared. There are unlimited choices and each one delectable. From our experience, we suggest starting with the steaming Tomato Dhaniya or the Murgh Badam shorba, perfect for a rainy evening. Among the vegetarian starters, the
creamy Hara Bhara kebab, chilly marinated Paneer Tikka and melt-in-mouth Mewey Maway ki Seekh (dried fruit skewers) despite being standard offerings stand out because of their succulence and delicately balanced flavours. For those seeking something more meaty, try their beautifully N SHIVA KUMAR

For main course, be sure to try their spicy Paneer Kurchan, garlic flavoured Palak, lamb trotter and potli masala Nihari, to go with their slow cooked Awadhi Dum Biryani or Kacche Gosht ki Biryani. For those who prefer breads, we say go with the Laccha Parathas or Mewy ki Naan. For desserts, we recommend their Shahi Badam Tukda and Kesar Pista Kulfi. But be warned, they are quite rich and hearty and not for the faint-hearted.

WHEN
TAMANNAH GOT MOBBED A ctress Tamannaah Bhatia was mobbed by anti-Telangana activists and was asked to comment on the separation of the state. However, the actress refused to oblige. "She was on her way to the sets of Ajith Kumar's upcoming Tamil film. Her car was stopped while she was heading towards Odisha from Vizag (Vishakhapatnam) by a group of anti-Telangana activists and was asked to chant slogan in favour of Andhra Pradesh," a source from the film's unit said. "Her father told us about the incident. Apparently, neither did Tamannaah chant the slogan nor
supported the division of the state. She told them that she treats everybody alike and didn't want to comment on the issue. They didn't cause any trouble and let her go when she refused to comment," he added. On July 30, it was announced that Andhra Pradesh would be divided to carve out a separate Telangana state. Tamannaah, who is known for her Telugu films such as Happy Days and 100% Love, was last seen in Telugu romantic-drama Tadakha opposite Akkineni Naga Chaitanya. She will soon be seen opposite Mahesh Babu in Aagadu.

Potro, Isner in final
Top-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro and US eight-seed John Isner advanced to the final of the Washington Open with rain-interrupted triumphs. WASHINGTON: Top seed Juan Martin Del Potro and US eighth seed John Isner advanced to the final of the ATP and WTA Washington Open with rain-interrupted triumphs Saturday. Seventh-ranked Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion from Argentina, defeated German third seed Tommy Haas 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 while Isner blasted 29 aces in a 6-7 (7/9), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov. Del Potro, the 2008 and 2009 Washington winner, was down 1-4 when rain halted the first set for more than three hours, but won the next four games once play resumed. “The rain delay helped me play much better in the second part of the match,” Del Potro said. “I came back with too much power on my forehand. It was too much for Tommy.” Del Potro saved a set point with a second-serve ace in the 12th game and took the tiebreaker when Haas hit a backhand long. “He went for it. There’s nothing you can do,” Haas said of the second-serve ace. “The rain delay was annoying. Bothered me a lot. Momentum was on my side. (The first set) would have been mine.” Haas netted a backhand to surrender a break in the eighth game of the second set and Del Potro held for the victory, stretching his win streak to 13 matches at the hardcourt event, having not played in the US capi-

Haas fell to 0-5 against Del Potro and has never taken a set from the South American star. Isner, who won last week in Atlanta, took the only break of his second set on the first point after a rain delay of more than an hour in the fourth game, hitting a forehand winner. “It was just about getting warmed up and winning that point,” Isner said. “I did come out fresher from that rain delay. India complete series sweep BULAWAYO: Legspinner Amit Mishra’s six-wicket haul took India to a comprehensive one-day series whitewash in Zimbabwe as they beat the hosts by seven wickets in Saturday’s fifth oneday international in Bulawayo. Mishra’ figures of six for 48 saw Zimbabwe bowled out for just 163, and also took his wicket tally in the series to 18 - a new record for a five-match series. As they had for much of a onesided series, India made light work of the Zimbabwean target, knocking off the runs in 34 overs to record their first whitewash away from home in a five-match contest. Although fast bowler Kyle Jarvis returned to the Zimbabwean line-up to claim two wickets in the first 11 overs of the Indian innings, Ajinkya Rahane made 50 after coming in for his first game of the tour and Ravindra Jadeja hit 48 not out to see India to another crushing win. Rahane batted steadily in his 66ball knock before he was bowled by part-timer Malcolm Waller, while Jadeja started slowly before opening up to hit two sixes in the second half of AFP his innings.

It’s really a lot of guessing and hoping you put your racquet where the ball is going to be.” Isner tops the season ATP rankings in aces with 587 in 37 matches and has a tournamentbest 78 aces this week. “I’ve served incredibly well the last two weeks,” Isner said. “That has carried me. I’m in a pretty good serving rhythm right now. I’m riding high with a lot of AFP confidence.”
Djoker bids for third straight title MONTREAL: Novak Djokovic returns to tennis for the first time since Wimbledon as the Serb begins his bid for a third straight title when the Montreal Masters begins on Monday. Djokovic has not played since losing the Wimbledon final to Andy Murray, the second seed who will also be testing himself for the first time in a month since making history with his title at the All England Club. Missing from the field will be two-time champion Roger Federer, the world number five, with the Swiss apparently unable to overcome the back spasms which bothered him in recent weeks as he played for the first time in years at clay events in Hamburg and Gstaad. ATP number five Federer gave no precise indication of why he will not make the trip to start his pre-US Open campaign, saying only: “I am disappointed not to be playing in Montreal next week. It is a great tournament with amazing fans. I look forward to competing there in the future.” Also pulling out was wild card Gael Monfils, who had the misfortune to injure his ankle while training at the tournament site in Canada. American Mardy Fish, never the same since his heart-scare incident nearly 18 months ago, withdrew for “personal reasons”. Serb Viktor Troicki and Croatian Marin Cilic, both under clouds for alleged violations of the tennis anti-doping policy, are not included in the field for the first major tune-up prior to the US Open which AFP begins August 26.
Tiger keeps seven-stroke lead AKRON: World number one Tiger Woods, seeking his eighth career victory at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational, fired a two-under par 68 on Saturday to keep a sevenstroke lead after 54 holes. One day after matching the low round of his career and the Firestone Country Club course record with a 61, Woods maintained the same gap he had opened on the field on Friday, with a three-round total of 15under par 195. “I feel pretty good,” Woods said. “Today was a day that I didn’t quite have it, but I scored. And the name of the game is posting a number and I did, grinded my way around that golf course.” “I was just trying to build on my lead somehow, just trying to build on it, and for most of the day I was doing that. And hopefully I can seal the deal tomorrow and get ready for the PGA at Oak Hill.” Sweden’s Henrik Stenson fired a 67 to stand second on 202, one stroke in front of American Jason Dufner, who also shot 67 on Saturday. England’s Luke Donald and Chris Wood and American Bill Haas shared fourth on 204 with American Keegan Bradley and Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez on 205. Woods opened with back-to-back birdies, then closed the front nine with a bogey only to answer with a AFP birdie at the 10th.

ASHES 2013
Oz on top despite KP ton
MANCHESTER: Kevin Pietersen’s first century of this Ashes series helped see England to within sight of avoiding the follow-on in the third Test against Australia at Old Trafford on Saturday. At the close of the third day, England were 294 for seven -still 233 runs behind -- after Pietersen had made 113. Matt Prior was six not out and Stuart Broad nine not out, with England now needing just 34 more runs to make Australia bat again in a match the tourists, 2-0 down with three to play, have to win to stand any chance of regaining the Ashes. The hundred was Pietersen’s 23rd in 97 Tests -- but first at this level at Old Trafford -- and left him two shy of the England Test century record of 25 held by Alastair Cook. It came almost a year to the day since Pietersen’s Test hundred against his native South Africa at Headingley, after which he was briefly dropped from the England side for sending texts allegedly critical of then England captain Andrew Strauss to Proteas players. Together with Ian Bell, who made an elegant 60, Pietersen put on 115 for the fifth wicket and 52 for the sixth with Jonny Bairstow (22). “It only means something if we get a draw or a win,” said Pietersen after surpassing Graham Gooch, now the team’s batting coach, as England’s leading run-scorer across all international formats.

We can get the runs to avoid follow-on and even if we don’t then we can bat for a good length of time.” Ashes-holders England resumed Saturday on 52 for two after Australia had declared at 527 for seven on the back of captain Michael Clarke’s 187. At the start of play, England captain Cook was 36 not out and

Jonathan Trott two not out. However, Trott fell for five when he edged fast bowler Ryan Harris low to Clarke at second slip. Pietersen was fortunate not to nick his first ball, an excellent delivery from Harris, and only got off the mark after just digging out a yorker from the same bowler. Meanwhile left-hander Cook completed a 138-ball fifty including seven fours.
But shortly before lunch leftarm fast bowler Mitchell Starc had Cook caught superbly for 62 by diving wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who held a right-handed chance off a genuine glance. Then Bell, on four, survived an appeal for a catch by Haddin off Starc with the ‘Snicko’ device, not part of the Decision Review System that has caused so much controversy this series, indicating he had got a thin edge. At lunch, England were 119 for four with Pietersen on 33 and Bell on four. Pietersen then attacked Nathan Lyon, dancing down the pitch to drive the offspinner for two sixes in successive balls as he went to fifty. AFP

MANCHESTER: Kevin Pietersen said he was facing rehab work on his knee problem for the rest of his career after becoming England’s leading run scorer across all international formats on Saturday. The 33-year-old South Africaborn batsman made 113 as England ended the third day of the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford on 294 for seven, only 34 runs shy of avoiding the follow-on but still 233 runs adrift of Australia’s first innings 527 for seven declared. But this has been a largely frustrating year for Pietersen, sidelined for several months after returning home early from England’s tour of New Zealand in March with a knee injury. Then a calf problem he suffered during England’s mammoth 347-run second Test win over Australia at Lord’s last month left Pietersen doubtful for this match.
Aussie press laud ‘pure theatre’ Kevin SYDNEY: Australia’s cricket writers on Sunday hailed old nemesis Kevin Pietersen’s fighting century in the third Test, saying the knock had tempered the tourist’s hopes of a dramatic Ashes comeback. At the close of the third day, England were 294 for seven — still 233 runs behind — after Pietersen had made 113. While Clarke’s team will still fancy their chances of creeping back into the series, Australia’s scribes conceded that Pietersen’s knock had made it all the more difficult of staying alive with two Tests to play.
Pietersen said he’d contemplated an operation but that it would have meant yet more time out of action. “If I’d had surgery I’d have been out for nine months. (It was) a big decision,” Pietersen said. “I think I’ll be in rehab for the rest of my career unfortunately.” Ashes-holders England may be 2-0 with three to play but this match has seen them under sustained pressure for the first time this series. But thanks to former captain Pietersen’s innings they are not yet out of this Test where a draw will be good enough for England to retain the Ashes. Pietersen’s latest knock also meant he’d overtaken Graham Gooch, now the team’s batting coach, as England’s all-time leading run scorer in all forms of international cricket with 13,242 runs compared AFP to the Essex great’s 13,190.

Real down Everton Real Madrid defeated Everton 2-1 in a friendly match at the Dodger Stadium, where, for the first time a football match was held.
LOS ANGELES: Cristiano Ronaldo gave fans at the first football match ever at Dodger Stadium what they wanted Saturday, scoring one goal and aiding another in Real Madrid’s 2-1 friendly win over Everton. More then 40,000 spectators turned out at the 51-year-old baseball stadium nestled in Los Angeles’ Chavez Ravine and the first football goal in the venue’s history went to one of the game’s greats when Ronaldo scored in the 17th minute. He had chipped a volley from the center of the area over the crossbar in the 10th, but made no mistake on his next chance, when a crisp ball from Mesut Ozil brought Everton keeper Tim Howard out of his goal and Ronaldo got round him to slide an angled shot into the open net. Ozil doubled Real Madrid’s lead in the 31st minute after taking a pass from Ronaldo. The Spanish side’s second goal came a minute after Sylvain Distin appeared to score on a header for Everton, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul. Everton also saw a golden opportunity go begging in the 24th, when Marouane Fellaini’s

Wenger hits back at Rodgers LONDON: Arsene Wenger hit back on Saturday at Brendan Rodgers (in pic) after the Liverpool manager insisted Arsenal’s bid for Luis Suarez fell well short of the player’s valuation. Rodgers claimed Suarez’s qualities meant he should be valued in similar terms to Gareth Bale, the Tottenham forward who has attracted a near £100 million approach from Real Madrid. Speaking after his side’s 2-2 draw with Napoli on the first day of the pre-season Emirates Cup tournament, Arsenal manager Wenger confirmed the club had made a formal bid for Suarez — believed to be in the region of £40 million. But he also insisted negotiations would remain in-house and admitted he was perplexed by Rodgers’s decision to speak out. “I do not understand this kind of thinking and would not like to talk openly about negotiations, because that is not my target in (this) press conference,” he had said. “We have one month in front of us and we will work very hard to strengthen our squad, without naming any specific names, because I do not believe that will make negotiations easier. “After that, you can make all kind of thinking about the price of the players, and you can say as well they

Andre Villas-Boas upped the stakes in the Gareth Bale transfer saga when he blasted Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti for his public pursuit of the highlyprized Welsh international. Villas-Boas insisted that Bale was not for sale and even pictured the 24-year-old still in a Spurs shirt this season. Bale is widely expected to complete a world record move, valued at around 100 million euros, to the Spanish giants next week. But Villas-Boas said that the suggestion the player is on the brink of leaving White Hart Lane is just speculation. “In my opinion Carlo was wrong to make it public,” said Villas-Boas, after seeing his side lose 5-2 to Monaco in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. “We had conversations with Real and these were then confirmed publically which, in my opinion, was wrong.” Villas-Boas added: “These rumours of an imminent transAFP fer are not true.”
LONDON: Laurent Koscielny’s late header salvaged a 2-2 draw for Arsenal in their Emirates Cup clash with Napoli on Saturday, but the Gunners’ inconsistent performance will have strengthened Arsene Wenger’s desire to improve his squad. Wenger has so far failed to land any of his main transfer targets, including Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, and the frailties shown by a familiar looking line-up as the home side fell behind to first half goals from Lorenzo Insigne and Goran Pandev provided cause for concern. To make matters worse, Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski saw a penalty saved in the opening 45 minutes of the four-team pre-season tournament. But Gunners boss Wenger could at least draw comfort from a much improved second half display that was capped by Olivier Giroud’s goal and then Koscielny’s equaliser in the final minutes. Gonzalo Higuain’s presence in the Napoli squad served as a reminder of Arsenal’s failure to recruit during the close season, with the former Real Madrid striker opting for a move to Italy ahead of a switch to the Emirates Stadium. Wenger’s focus has since switched to Suarez, but while a forward has been his priority, the way his defence performed during the opening 45 minutes served as a reminder of weaknesses elsewhere in his squad. Both goals came as a result of poor

Wenger has been linked with a move for Ashley Williams, the Swansea captain, and Arsenal scouts were in south Wales this week to watch the central defender in action in the Europa League tie with Malmo. This display will only encourage further interest as Insigne’s third minute opening goal came from an individual error by Carl Jenkinson. The Gunners right back inexplicably attempted to head a floated through ball back to keeper Lukasz Fabianski but succeeded only in looping the ball into the path of the Napoli winger who volleyed home from close range. MONACO: Tottenham got a worrying glimpse of life without Gareth Bale on Saturday when they were crushed 5-2 by Monaco in a pre-season friendly. Welsh star Bale is widely expected to complete a world record move, valued at around 100 million euros, to Real Madrid in the next few days and the 24-year-old did not travel to Monaco for the game. Spurs, who were also without new 30 million euro recruit Roberto Soldado, struggled throughout to contain Monaco, now coached by former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri and who were promoted back to the French top flight last season. They were worthy winners with Radamel Falcao, their 60 million euro signing from Atletico Madrid, grabbing two goals. Monaco were a goal ahead after 15 minutes when Italian defender Andrea Raggi volleyed beneath Hugo Lloris in the AFP Tottenham goal.
