as the security guard in the company, which is located in South Lalaguda. Earlier, he had worked as a guard in other companies and is believed to have perfected

the art of stealing valuables and selling them to scrap dealers, but had got away with it. In this case, he was caught by the camera eye as he was unaware of its surveillance all over the factor.

The theft was reported last week by its manager Mohammed Afzal, after a large quantity of these wires were found missing. He questioned the guard who pleaded ignorance. Afzal, then reported the matter to the police who came in, checked the camera and straightaway saw that it was a case of the fence eating away the crop it was meant to protect. He was arrested on the spot but the scrap dealers are absconding. Verma has been remanded to judicial custody.

Bid to grab minor girl’s property HYDERABAD: A case of greedy relatives trying to grab the sole property of an adopted minor girl after the death of her foster mother has come to light. The relatives forged the signatures of the late mother and took over the property but the girl, who knew her biological father, informed him and they moved the court, which asked Tukaramgate police to book a criminal case against three persons related to the girl.

Vaishnavi, daughter of K Narendra, a poor man, was given in adoption to an unmarried woman with physical disabilities Shobha Rani, when she

was two years old. Shobha, who was employed in the Indian Railways, and her daughter lived separately from the girl’s father.

Shobha Rani died in the year 2008. She had willed her sole property to her adopted daughter. Some relatives of Narendra plotted to grab the property.

They forged the signatures of Shobha through which they tried to show that against a loan she had supposedly taken from them, the property was surrendered to them.

They arm-twisted the girl also to sign, telling her that she was still a minor and could claim

the property when she attained adulthood. Realising that she was being deprived of her property, she refused but was tortured into submission, it is alleged.

The girl located her biological father, and the two approached the local court, which directed the police to book a case against three persons who plotted to take away the girl’s property.

It transpired that the plotters are relatives of Narendra — K Chandramohan, 55, a resident of Mahindra Hills, his wife Sujatha, and brother K Surender.

‘First aid? No one gets hurt’ So runs the argument of school management and teachers. Keeping a first-aid box is mandatory and students are to be acquainted with administering them, not just for the injury on hand but to have the skill to help fellow beings caught in emergency.

MOHSIN ALI ali@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Many schools in Hyderabad and Rangareddy district are defying guidelines of government that they should have first aid kits to take care of the students in emergencies, reveals an inspection carried out by the education department.

As per the government order all the schools have to ensure that they have such kits on their premises. It also suggests that every head of institution should allocate some money from the school funds collected for the promotion of sports and games, for the maintenance of these kits.

This fund could also be used to supplement or replace the kits and to buy new equipment and medicines. As per the guidelines, the headmasters of schools can collect `10 per annum before from each student as first aid kit fee to just create awareness about first aid.

A teacher from government high School Kukatpally, said that each school has to maintain the first aid kit including bandage, Dettol, scissors, antibiotic tablets, etc. but it is not being implemented in any school.

“Some primary health centres

and government hospitals used to supply these kits. Teachers need not spend money from their pocket. Every school gets the maintenance funds but don't know why managements are ignoring this," she said.

Urdu medium head master from Hydernagar Primary School said in a queer argument, “There is a rule to keep the firstaid kit, but in Urdu medium we have a strength of only 20 students, so we don’t have one.

That amount we spend on students or school development.”

When we informed him that schools in his jurisdiction are not maintaining first-aid kits he said teachers say “nobody gets injured” and so may be ignoring it. He said that in next meeting with teachers he will tell them to ensure that schools have the kits.

Besides, a doctor or health worker from any nearby prima-

ry health centre is supposed to visit every school and explain both to the students and teachers how first aid should be administered. “But that hardly happens ever, text books too should incorporate lessons on first aid to create awareness among the students,” he said.

The opinion of the district education officer, Rangareddy, is different. He said the school maintenance fund does not include first-aid kits. The fund is just enough for electricity bill and sanitation works. He blamed the district medical and health officer for not providing first-aid kits. Despite bringing this up, they have not acted on it.

Teaching first aid techniques to students must be necessary, "It's like a subject in the curriculum,” says an academic. “Practical applications of it are hardly ever shown to the children. It's an everyday affair and must not be kept within the confines of text books,'' he explains.

Schools’ indifference and lack of awareness have come to light on several occasions. Minor accidents can take place at schools during the sports programme, if the students learn, they can use them and save someone in need of medical help.

All the Congress leaders from Seemandhra are seething in anger as the Centre has ignored the twomonth-old stir in the region and also it has tricked the leaders telling them that the cabinet note on Telangana will be taken only after the Antony panel visits the State.

The tale of two regions Last evening celebrations broke out in Telangana while Seemandhra erupted in anger after the Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to carve out a separate Telangana state.

n the one side was the chorus, ‘Jai Samaikhyandhra’ and the other side was ‘Jai Telangana.’ The two diametrically opposite moods made neutral people sad.

People in Hyderabad and nine other districts of Telangana hailed the decision of the union cabinet. Activists of Congress, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other groups came out on streets bursting crackers and distributing sweets.

Congress workers including women were seen dancing at Gandhi Bhavan, the party headquarters. Party leaders joined the workers in the celebrations.

Though TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao advised people of Telangana to be cautious till parliament passed a bill for formation of separate state, the activists of his party celebrated the development at party headquarters Telangana Bhavan.

Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra) was rocked by protests after the cabinet decided to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh. Protestors came onto the streets in Vijayawada, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Kurnool, Anantapur and other towns, opposing the decision.

Raising slogans of 'Jai samaikyandhra' (long live united Andhra) the protestors burnt effigies of Congress leaders, central ministers and MPs. Various groups opposing state's bifurcation have called for 48-hour shutdown in Seemandhra.

On a mission to revive Indian crafts As a member of Aiesec, Lipika Rao has worked with traditional craftsmen. She noticed how underappreciated their skills were and since then has been on a mission and started a gallery called Earth Art Gallery, through which she aims to revive the Indian crafts.

ARUN D YELLAMATY arunyellamaty@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Speaking about starting the gallery, Lipika Rao says, “I was a part of an international students’ organization called Aiesec, that’s where I learned from several artists. I was also in-charge of visiting NGOs and social work and organising events for them.

My mother has a contemporary art gallery, at icon art I was the curator for few events, I always wondered why contemporary art is much popular than Indian craft and that’s why I want to do something for Indian artists and started the Earth Art Gallery.”

For the 24-year-old, the mission is very clear. “The mission behind Earth Art gallery is to reform Indian artists, Indian art form. We want to also be a platform for Indian artists so that they could get enough money through their art, for their living. We want these Indian artists to interact with contemporary artists. We have workshops where they can learn more things in the market and improve their work,” she explains. “The focus is to revive the craft art.”

She says it was hard to get a lot of artists on board, as the other places they approached had not helped them much.

“The is always a credibility. Many had earlier collaborated with NGOs that buy their work for very low amounts and after that the artisans have nothing to do with the craft they’ve produced.”

“Our mission is also to make the artists known to the public. No one knows the artists after buying their work. Here they get a chance to meet people and interact and talk about their art. So far we have conducted workshops in Nakashi, wood cut printing, kalamkari and terracotta.”

“Now a lot of artists keep coming, Due to lack of space, we keep organizing the event at Icon Art Gallery. Many now want to get involved with us and we are here to help.”

MUMBAI: To create awareness about nature, Inorbit Connect — an initiative of Inorbit Mall — celebrated World Nature Day on October 3. The activity was conducted in two malls in Mumbai — Malad and Vashi. The drive was to hand over a Grasshead, a Chinese product to customers who have shopped above `1,000.

Due to limited stock, only 100 pieces of the Grassheads were to be distributed but the aim was to spread the message of conserving nature through these souvenirs.

The Grassheads shaped in the form of a teddy bear, distinguished into male and female by the colour of the bow tie, blue and pink respectively, needs to be soaked in water for a while till it starts to float after which it has to be transferred into a permanent container.

The teddy bear then has to be constantly hydrated over a period of days after which the saplings embedded on the top, start to grow.

Hackers steal source code, customer info from Adobe SAN FRANCISCO: Software titan Adobe Systems on Thursday warned that hackers breached its defenses and stole source code along with credit card numbers and other information relating to nearly three million customers.

“Very recently, Adobe’s security team discovered sophisticated attacks on our network, involving illegal access of customer information as well as source code for numerous Adobe products,” Adobe chief security officer Brad Arkin said in a blog post.

“Our investigation currently indicates that the attackers accessed Adobe customer IDs and encrypted passwords on our systems.”

It appeared that no decrypted credit or debit card numbers were pil-

“We deeply regret that this incident occurred,” Arkin said. “We’re working diligently internally, as well as with external partners and law enforcement, to address the incident.”

Adobe was resetting the passwords of customers whose information was taken and alerting people whose credit or debit card numbers were swiped.

The company was also investigating the theft of source code crafted into its products and said it didn’t believe it increased the risk of hackers breaking into programs people may be using.

MAMOOL IN ONION, NOT IN RUPEE With the soaring prices, people seem to be thinking twice before buying them.

A few grocery store keepers who have not done good business during the day, keep their stores open till late in the night hoping to get some last minute customers.

However, to their immense grief what they often get are the cops who come in the guise of checking and take away bags of onion! Reason?

Well, the first thing the cops get hold of before asking the storekeepers to close, as per rule is to pack a few kilos of onion for home.

He can’t refuse, and there goes his earning of the day. An incident took place at Ghatkesar a few days ago.

A shop which was open till 11 in the night was raided and a big bag of onion was seized and taken to the police station.

The next day this Reporter who was at

the station to check a case that was reported happened to see the onions at the station and casually asked the cops, who recalled the story and the journey of the bag of anonymous onion from the vegetable store to the police station.

The cop in duty was sincere enough to inform the reporter that the bag was being sent back to the stall owner after he requested the station boss.

But by the time the bag the was delivered, it had shed its weight considerably.

It was a shadow of its former self when it returned to the store.

Store owners now say cops who are used to mamool now ask for onion instead of rupee. Who wants a falling rupee, after all? (MS)

PIL filed against Lalu’s durbar, jail comforts RANCHI: Jailed former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad is holding a durbar and is meeting a number of visitors, when he is not resting, in a jail cottage that has a separate bathroom, alleges a PIL filed in the Jharkhand High Court.

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) says the RJD chief is enjoying a comfortable life in the jail, which is in violation of the Bihar jail manual.

“Lalu is holding a durbar in the jail. He has also threatened jail authorities to strip their uniform,” lawyer Rajiv Kumar who filed the PIL told IANS. Rajiv Kumar said: “The jail manuals are violated. Everyday hundreds of people are meeting Lalu. There are reports that Lalu sits in the chamber of jail superintendent.”

According to reports, an air conditioner was fitted in the jail after Lalu Prasad reached the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi Sep 30.

Washington police chief Cathy Lanier told reporters the suspect had been pronounced dead, but refused to discuss the driver’s possible motive while the investigation was ongoing.

“The child is approximately a year old, and is in good condition, and in protective custody,” Lanier said, adding that officers had fired shots at two locations as they tried to halt the vehicle.

A police statement said the car had Connecticut tags. It did not identify the driver. Two TV stations — CBS and ABC — and the Washington Post newspaper identified her as Miriam Carey, from the city of Stamford. ABC said she was a 34-year-old dental hygienist and suffered from post-partum depression after the birth of her daughter.

In the shadow of skyscrapers, Hong Kong’s working class trolley pushers transport everything from crates of live seafood to appliances, financial documents, furniture and mail.

But among the street cleaners, market traders and removal men, it is probably the city’s elderly scavengers who best highlight how vital handcarts are to the city.

Lee Cheung-Ho, 78, spends all day pushing her cart, and says she even goes out when there is a typhoon.

“I have to go out and make a living,” she told AFP without stopping. “It helps even if I can only earn a few dollars.”

The estimated 10,000 scavengers in Hong Kong collect cardboard, tin cans and scrap metal, selling it on for a few dollars to recycling centres to ship to mainland China.

With Hong Kong’s landfill sites set to reach capacity by 2020, this is seen as one way of addressing a looming environmental crisis.

But scavenging is also a means for many of the city’s poor to scrape by.

The financial hub, known as one of the world’s wealthiest cities, last month said that 1.31 million of its citizens were living in poverty.

Almost one in five is classified as poor and for the elderly the proportion rises to one in three, according to government data.

The scavengers AFP talked to fell well within that bracket, earning as little as HK$20 (US$3) a day.

Handcarts can be seen everywhere in the city. On a 10 minute walk around one neighbourhood, an AFP reporter counted 103, many stacked head-high with cardboard, others rattling with empty office water cooler cannisters, one carrying an air

conditioning unit, another a fridge-freezer.

Adam Bobbette, an expert on the urban environment at Hong Kong University, said handcarts were at the smallest end of a transport scale that includes the city’s vast cargo ships, trade lorries and red taxis.

And they are a necessity in a city with narrow streets and alleyways, and restricted parking.

And of two trolley-related fatalities last year, one cart pusher was hit by a bus and the other by a taxi. Both were in their 70s.

The spokeswoman did not offer any praise for the handcart when asked about its value to the city.

“Most of the trolleys are made in mainland China nowadays — but they don’t last very long, he told AFP. “They can beat you by selling the handcarts at a very cheap price.”

“Your crime doesn’t matter right now, relax,” Fredy Alan Diaz Arista, a 38-year-old former drug dealer who became a yoga teacher in prison, tells the teenagers facing homicide and robbery charges in Mexico City.

All dressed in navy blue sweatpants and white sleeveless shirts, the boys move in unison to Diaz’s instructions, which he peppers with inspirational phrases as they breathe heavily, switching to poses like the downward dog, table and pigeon.

Diaz’s yoga class attracts teenagers like Jesus, 16, accused of rape, Pedro, 14, facing charges of killing a woman, and Eric, 19, who was sentenced to the maximum five years for a juvenile for the crimes of homicide, kidnapping and extortion.

“There are days when I wake up stressed out because I have a lot of time to serve, but when I come here all the stress goes away and I relax,” says Eric, who was 17 when he decided to make “easy money” by helping to kidnap a man who was later killed.

Diaz learned yoga himself in prison after he was caught with a gun and 18 kilograms of cocaine in his luggage, which he was taking from the Pacific coast state of Guerrero to Mexico City in 2002.

After almost seven years behind bars, he decided to teach young offenders the physical and spiritual virtues of yoga that he learned from the Parinaama Foundation, which teaches the activity in penitentiaries.

“In prison, yoga was like a window for me, and as I practiced it more and more it became a door,” said Diaz, who has the

“I feel that I have a debt and that is why I come to these places, to share this. I have very little to feel good or proud about, and the little I have is this work that I do, which makes me feel good about myself,” he says.

The prison director, Cynthia Rosas Rodriguez, may add massage classes to the program, which could give the boys another career option after they walk free, but she stressed that the focus was on education.

“We offer a series of activities that, taken together, are a good way for boys who lived through lots of violence to express and metabolize their emotions,” Rosas said, acknowledging that the program will not change a “minority of boys.”

The warning sent shudders through markets, with US stocks sinking Thursday and Asian indexes opening lower Friday, as Washington passed the third day of a dramatic shutdown due to Congress’s stalemate over a new budget.

“As we saw two years ago, prolonged uncertainty over whether our nation will pay its bills in full and on time hurts our economy,” Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a statement.

“Postponing a debt ceiling increase to the very last minute is exactly what our economy does not need — a self-inflicted wound harming families and businesses.”

In an op-ed due to appear in USA Today on Friday, Lew expanded on his dire outlook, saying failure to raise the debt-ceiling would have far-reaching consequences across all sectors of American society.

“If the United States cannot pay its bills in full and on time, each and every American will be affected, including seniors who rely on Social Security, veterans who depend on disability payments, children in need of food assistance, and doctors and hospitals who treat Medicare patients, among others,” Lew wrote.

“The stock market, including investments in retirement accounts, could tumble, and it could become more expensive for Americans to buy a car, own a home and open a small business.”

The government is already just barely operating below the $16.7 trillion ceiling on the back of “extraordinary measures” carried out since May to meet a chronic deficit of about $60 billion a month, according to the Treasury.

Street artist Banksy sets New York on the chase

orld-famous, reclusive artist Banksy is loose on the streets of New York, hosting a unique show that has whipped up excitement among hipsters and the chattering classes.

The England-based graffiti maestro, who has never been formally identified, has promised to unveil a new piece of art on each day of the month somewhere in the city.

His stencilled designs, known for their irreverent humour and political activism, have propelled him from a graffiti rebel to reluctant star whose work sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But the New York show is free, public and accessible to all.

Painted in secret and announced online, fans rush to track down the elusive piece before they are painted over or “tagged” by rival graffiti artists, often within hours of going viral.

And the name of the show?

“Better Out Than In”.

“It’s just so intriguing, it’s like a chase,” says actor Lisa Rowe-Beddoe, who has visited each of Banksy’s three pieces to

date. Her mission is to track them down the full set by the end of October.

The New York show has an Instagram account, which already has around 30,000 followers. The website banksy. co.uk posts photographs of the work and @banksyny posts cryptic messages on Twitter.

“There’s something just brilliant about Banksy. He’s just so original,” says Rowe-Beddoe.

“It’s interactive. It’s cool, plus he says cool things.”

The latest piece — a black dog urinating on a hydrant with the words “You complete me” in a speech bubble and the caption “a shoulder to crayon” — attracted a huge crowd on Thursday.

Teenagers, artists, and professionals gathered to chat, joke and snap pictures on their cell phones — posing for the camera as they crouched down and pretended to stroke the dog.

“It’s a buzz,” says Ken Brown, who writes a blog about street culture as he takes pictures

of the crowd. “And because he’s so well known, it’ll be a boon to New York”.

Brown was bitterly disappointed when he got to the first Banksy, which appeared on a wall in Chinatown on Tuesday, to find it was already buffed.

“I’m a long-time admirer of Banksy. I feel he’s really a rarefied genius. He gets humour and puts a lot of things that are missing into his pieces,” he says.

Fans can access an audio commentary from a toll-free

number inked to the ground, or on the website.

The narration from a man with a smooth American accent, introduced by the kind of muzak pipped out in elevators, is clever and languid.

“Are you looking at one of the great artworks of the 21st century? If so you’re in the wrong place. You should be looking at a stencil of a dog peeing on a hydrant,” he drawled.

“It’s a well known truism that the mark of a great artist is their ability to capture light, so you will note that this piece is rendered entirely in silhouette.”

It this irreverence that appeals to Banksy fans.

“I’ve been waiting my whole life since high school to see one,” gushed Ronin Wood, a 24-yearold graphic designer, whipping out his cell phone in uber-cool art neighbourhood Chelsea. This is my New York accent,” was spray painted in thick letters onto a garage door under a disused railway bridge Wednesday, followed by “... normally I write like this” in smaller italic script.

Meet music producer Akhil Kodamanchili who calls his music kaleidosonic.

I

n the bustling hall at La Makaan, Akhil Kodamanchili sat with his guitar on a platform in a corner with a couple of young boys. One of them said it was tough to play a certain chord.

Akhil replied, “Practise: with practice comes all.” As they progressed through the informal session, Akhil showed them certain styles of playing and the techniques used. “I can only show you so much. It is you who will have to practise and take it forward.”

If there is anyone who knew what he was saying, it is Akhil.

By his own admission, till the age of 16, Akhil (now he is 23; hardly looks it though: with the wavy mane and the small braid that runs down his nape, he looks younger) just looked at the guitar with a degree of curiosity and interest, but the

degree reached a pitch when he turned 16 that he could ignore the instrument no more and bought one.

“For the first six months, I may have just looked at it more often that try to play it,” says Akhil. “Thankfully my seniors at school (HPS) who played were very helpful. I would look at them when they played and go home and try it on my guitar,” Akhil recalls those days of discovery, feverish with frenzy to make the guitar respond to his fingertips. “If I did not get it, I would ask them the next day how it was done; I knew if they could do it, I could do it.”

Oh, the introductions. Akhil is a music producer. He was one of the thousands if not many more of the teenagers from this land who pursued the Telugu dream of making it big as a software professional. His pursuit had taken him to Illinois in the US when he realised that it was not his thing. “I realised music

“But that’s okay,” he says. was my real calling,” says Akhil.

“I came back and convinced my parents and enrolled for an advanced diploma course in contemporary music and technology at Selkirk College, Canada.”

Akhil says there he strengthened his roots in the basics. “I learned to break down music into sonic alphabets.”

Akhil is not bound by genres. “I call it kaleidosonic. It’s basically fusion. I like every genre though it sounds like many who say it, without knowing what that means. There are things in every genre, it could be hip-hop, jazz, rock, I use what I like and make my music,” he

explains. He says he may not be able to call himself a jazz musician, but “that’s okay”.

He describes his music as a balance between intuition and intention. “Sometimes you know that this is what you want. Sometimes you know you have time and must let it come.

It’s that fine balance between improvisation and composition,” he explains.

Akhil, one of the founding members of the band Skrypt, has his own solo band Framing The Question.

He also collaborates with other musicians. He recently collaborated with a band called the Dream Weavers.

Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has written an open letter to Miley Cyrus, warning her about the evils of music industry. Cyrus, who was criticised for a naked video of track “Wrecked ball”, said that it was inspired from Connor’s 1990’s track “ Nothing compares 2 u”. In the open, letter O'Connor wrote: “I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos.” “You have enough talent that you don't need to let the music business make a prostitute of you,” she added.

any people hospitalised in intensive care for conditions like a heart attack face lasting mental deficits similar to traumatic brain injury, US researchers said, urging families to push for minimal sedation.

The problem is “very common,” with a condition known as delirium affecting about threequarters of those treated in the

ICU and subsequent brain damage enduring for at least a year in up to one in three of them, said the study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“What a dilemma we have in medicine, with this many people leaving our care with a form of brain injury, essentially, that was completely unsuspected by the average medical professional,” Ely said.

“We work so hard to help them survive, and we think that when they get off life support and they get out of shock that we have done our job and we can send them on their way,” he said.

“These people may have survived, but they are leaving with an entirely new set of problems.”

Their struggles were associated with the length of time the patients suffered from delirium, a confused mental state that commonly occurs in seriously ill patients.

Previous research has shown delirium may lead to brain atrophy by causing inflammation and killing neurons, though more study is needed to understand why and how it works.

Researchers also know that delirium is more likely to occur when higher amounts of drugs such as sedatives or painkillers are given to patients.

The study included 821 patients, of whom just six percent were believed to have some kind of cognitive impairment when entering the hospital.

The patients, ranging in age from 18 to 99 with an average age of 61, were rushed to intensive care for either a severe heart attack, respiratory failure or septic shock.

Delirium developed in 74 percent of patients while they were in the hospital and typically lasted about four days.

After a year, one in three patients scored similarly to people with traumatic brain injury on mental tests, while nearly one in four performed like people with Alzheimer’s disease, regardless of their age.

The longer the period of delirium they had suffered in the hospital, the worse off they were mentally later on, according to the findings.

“What was really striking was that the 30- and 40-year-olds had just as many people in the traumatic brain injury range as

the older people,” said Ely. He added that families with loved ones in the ICU should ask the doctors and nurses if they are monitoring for delirium.

“And can we have our mom as awake as possible? Keep her comfortable, treat her pain, but let’s not have her receiving unnecessary amounts of these drugs,” Ely said.

“We would rather have her awake than in a coma if we have the alternative.”

Maggie Zellner, director of

the Neuropsychoanalysis Foundation in New York, who was not involved with the study, described it as “significant.”

“This study demonstrates that a range of conditions which reduce blood flow, oxygen, and other nutrients to the brain can lead to cognitive impairment,” she said in an email to AFP. “Any patient who has lived through intensive care should be offered psychological services following discharge.”

SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter on Thursday unveiled plans to pump up the globally popular one-to-many messaging service with a $1 billion stock market debut.

The initial public offering (IPO) is expected to be the most sought-after since Facebook in May 2012, a listing that faced numerous glitches on the Nasdaq and which saw the company's share price slump before recovering this year.

Twitter outlined its plans in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, providing the the first public insights into the San Francisco company that has rocketed to Internet stardom since its launch in 2006.

"Social media is red hot," said Internet analyst Lou Kerner.

"Twitter is front and center benefiting from market enthusiasm for all things social, and remarkably strong metrics."

In the regulatory filing, Twitter disclosed that it had 218 million active users as of June 30 in a 44 percent increase from the same point a year earlier. It reported that it lost almost $80 million on nearly $317 million in revenue in 2012.

Twitter brought in $253.6 million in revenue in the first half of this year, but remained in the red with a loss of about $69 million, the company said in the filing.

Some noted that Twitter would be close to breaking even this year if it hadn't spent slightly more than $67 million on social television analytics firm BlueFin Labs.

Forrester analyst Zachary Reiss-Davis sees the capital-raising move by Twitter as a sign the company is intent on improving ways people enjoy content on its platform and how marketers connect with users.

"Users should be happy about this," Reiss-Davis said.

"It looks like Twitter is looking at how to enrich the experience and it understands that to build a successful service they have to create something people like and want to come back to and spend time on."

A challenge for Twitter will be finding money-making

advertising methods that take advantage of the real-time, and short-lasting, nature of posts at the service while not annoying users.

"Things on Twitter have very short shelf lives, and advertisers are going to have to adapt to that," the analyst said.

He expected marketing on Twitter to become integrated with other media such as television viewing in what are referred to as "second-screen" experiences in which people delve into tweets while watching shows.

The public version of the IPO filing came three weeks after Twitter filed a confidential document, taking advantage of a

recent law designed to help emerging companies.

aris fashion gave Marc Jacobs a standing ovation Wednesday as news broke that the designer who transformed Louis Vuitton from “stodgy luggage house” to global fashion giant is to leave.

The US designer with a flair for showmanship dedicated his final show for the Parisian luxury brand to “the women who inspire me and the showgirl in every one of them”.

“That’s one hell of an act to follow,” said Vogue magazine on its international web-

Jacobs listed a string of women who had inspired him in a statement — from Jane Birkin, Betty Catroux, Catherine Deneuve and Edith Piaf to Liza Minnelli, Kate Moss, Barbra Streisand and Vivienne Westwood.

The designer is wrapping up his 16-year tenure to concentrate on a stock exchange flotation of his own brand, which market sources estimate could push it in the billion-dollar leagues.

“I love Louis Vuitton, it’s my favourite brand. The show today looked like a black swan’s show... like the swan saying goodbye to leave.”

A successor has not been named but Louis Vuitton is understood to have held talks with former Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere about succeeding Jacobs as artistic director, sources told WWD earlier.

Frenchman Ghesquiere parted company with Balenciaga in November 2012 following a 15-year tenure.

LVMH owns a substantial stake in the New York-based Jacobs business, and has overseen the introduction of

the brand Marc by Marc Jacobs and roll-out of a global network of stores.

Citing market sources, WWD said estimates for the entire Jacobs brand were “approaching the billion-dollar leagues”.

Jacobs attended the Parsons School of Design in New York before joining forces with Duffy who has been his business partner since the mid-1980s.

His first collection for the Marc Jacobs brand came in 1986. Marc by Marc Jacobs was introduced in 2001.

The news of his departure came as nine days of readyto-wear fashion for spring/summer 2014 wrapped up in Paris.

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

We all want to do something about it. This is my way of letting the world know what I feel about it," said Kalki.

that she wasn’t sure how people would react to the video.

"We were very nervous about people's reaction. We wondered if they'd get the sarcastic tone. Would people accept us joking about such a sensitive topic?" she said.

But the feedback they got for the video before its release was heartening.

"Friends reacted so well.

But we never expected the video to go viral in such a way.

In fact, we've been told to translate the English-language video into other Indian lan-

guages to make it accessible to a larger audience," said Kalki.

She also revealed that Tanmay is working on a Hindi version of the video.

Kalki defends the concept stoutly, "We didn't want to force-feed the message. At the same time we wanted the point to get across without accusing anyone. As for those who didn't like it, I guess there will always be people who criticise what you do. If you are in the limelight, you might as well be used to it."

YEONGAM: A typhoon threatening northeast Asia could bring rain to Sunday’s Korean Grand Prix but will not cause major problems, forecasters said. Drivers have expressed fears of a repeat of the inaugural race in 2010, which was halted for about an hour and started behind a safety car because of torrential rain. Typhoon Fitow is edging towards China’s eastern coast but there are concerns its outer bands could bring wind and rain to the southwest edge of South Korea, where the race takes place at 3:00 pm (0600 GMT) on Sunday.

An official with the Mokpo Weather Service, the city closest to the coastal Yeongam circuit, told AFP on Friday: “Because of the typhoon, there is a possibility of some rain on Sunday afternoon but the wind is unlikely to be strong inland. “The typhoon won’t have any major impact on the race itself.”

The escape allowed Stricker, the oldest US player at 46, and Jordan Spieth, the youngest at 20, to edge South Africa’s Ernie Els and Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge 1-up in the last match.

Spieth had birdied to win the 14th for a 2-up US lead. Els made his first birdie to win the 17th but Stricker blasted out to two feet at the last and De Jonge missed a 15-foot birdie putt to leave the Americans on top.

“It was a little nerve wracking,” Stricker said. “I didn’t hit a good iron shot but I made a good up and down to get it done.”

American duos at one point led in five matches and were level in another when a 90minute storm delay hit, eventually helping the visitors who proceeded to fight back at Muirfield Village.

“My team made a great effort coming back,” said Nick Price, the Internationals captain. “They played some incredible golf. I’m just so proud of the way they brought it back. They showed the true grit and spirit they have.”

‘Threat to No.1 spot not a distraction’

BEIJING: Novak Djokovic denied being distracted by the threat of losing his number one ranking after he edged through to the quarter-finals at the China Open Wednesday despite a “lack of concentration”.

The top seed in Beijing remained on course to reclaim the title he won last year after he defeated Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, while women’s topranked player Serena Williams also made it into the last eight.

BCCI unhappy with Manohar BCCI hit back at former president Manohar who has supposedly attempted to get his name expunged from the legal cases involving the board.

MUMBAI: The Indian cricket board Thursday hit back its former president Shashank Manohar (left) saying it has taken strong exception of his attempt to get his name expunged from the legal cases against the BCCI. BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said the move by Manohar amounts to shirking responsibility.

“There was no question of affidavit (filed by Manohar in the Bombay High Court) being discussed. But (what was discussed) was the case fought by Shashank Manohar in his individual way, (capacity) leaving aside the other office bearers and the employees of BCCI. That thing was discussed. Members were not happy with the kind of thing that has happened,” Patel said here at the Cricket Centre after a marketing committee meeting.

“BCCI rules and regulations and memorandum is very clear. The board is functioning

Manohar in an interview to a Mumbai daily blamed his successor Narayanaswami Srinivasan, who last Sunday was re-elected for a third year in office, for the mess in the BCCI and said he has lost the right to

continue as the president.

Manohar said a few board members, including then interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, had approached him to contest against Srinivasan.

Reacting to Manohar’s comments, Patel said: “I have not gone through the report but some media friends have told me and I was busy right through the morning (with marketing committee meeting).”

“I would like to say nothing more except that if any ex-BCCI official, before making any remarks about their colleagues on the Board, should have considered that BCCI is running with (the help of) all the office bearers.”

“My personal view is that it is always the collective responsibility of all office bearers. One cannot absolve himself by leaving aside the others. I don’t know much in detail about the issue but that is the only thing I can say,” Patel said.

Patel said that the Board will not react immediately to Manohar’s views.

“Nothing. Not right now.

That thing is not possible in a day. This is just a media information. We will wait for the official remarks if it is available from Shashank Manohar. Then we will see.”

FIXING Will take up Sreesanth issue: KCA president THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Newly appointed chairman of the National Cricket Academy T.C. Mathew, who is also the president of the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), said that he will speak to all concerned on Kerala’s cricket hero S. Sreesanth being banned for life for spot-fixing.

“He has been banned by the BCCI after its independent disciplinary committee gave him a hearing. In the coming days I will speak to his lawyer and also with Sreesanth himself. We have already raised this issue with the BCCI and a court is also looking into the case,” said Mathew, responding to queries on why his state cricket association did not come to his help.

“Even though, he has been banned for life, we have told him that he can practise at the Kochi stadium which is owned by the Greater Cochin Development Authority and managed by the KCA. But he is yet to turn up for any practise session,” said Mathew.

The BCCI’s disciplinary committee last month, slapped a life ban on Sreesanth and his Rajasthan Royals team mate Ankeet Chavan for spot fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sreesanth, Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested on May 16, for spot-fixing in IPL matches. All the three cricketers are currently out on bail.
