TN jeweller robbed, beaten MOHD SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: A man, Balakrishna, 52, who claims to be a gold jeweller from Tamil Nadu was allegedly conned and robbed of jewellery worth `38 lakh by a gang of four. Mahankali police, investigating the case, said Balakrishna frequented Hyderabad jewellery shops with designed gold jewelleries for many years. He would come with or without orders once a while and sell ornaments. Recently, he was on his rounds with gold jewellery worth around `40 lakh. He was put up at a lodge in the RP Road area in Secunderabad. During Balakrishna’s stay there, a person who introduced himself as Vijay contacted him on phone and showed interest

in buying his gold. The two arranged a place to meet in Miyanpur. Balakrishna carried the gold in his briefcase. Vijay took him to a second person, Raju, who was having cash and once there, the duo took him to a place in Bachupally. Balakrishna told the police

that the he was taken to an isolated location. The duo then bargained for the gold and the price was fixed at `38.63 lakh. As Balakrishna was relieved that at last a business deal was struck, in walked a couple of strangers who threw chilli powder in his eyes and gave him a

thrashing. After snatching the bag they escaped unchallenged. The complainant said he suspected the unknown persons were accomplices of Vijay and Raju as they made no attempt to stop the robbers. The two however pleaded innocent and that they left Balakrishna commiserating with him for the loss. Later Balakrishna tried to contact them on the mobile phone but they were switched off.

QUESTIONS THE POLICE HAVE TO PROBE

n Why did a jeweller trust a stranger that too on phone? n Why did he not invite the prospective buyer to his lodge rather than going out with the load of gold? n If it is legitimate gold how come he is having no helping hand with him?

The state government implemented the scheme to provide the roof for homeless in 2010 in this area but only half the blocks were completed while the remaining are to be built within a year as per the government orders. A group of homeless, suffer-

The Collector Mukesh Kumar Meena, ordered the Revenue Divisional Officer to look into the matter and he assured the locals that their problem would be solved soon. The residents of Addagutta, who are waiting for their houses for more than two years, told Postnoon that more than 300 families are staying in rental houses from the time they evacuated their huts for the flats. Official drowned by investigators BEIJING: A Chinese official was allegedly drowned by investigators who stripped him naked and held him down in a bathtub as they attempted to extort a confession to corruption, state-run media reported Wednesday. Yu Qiyi was held down by graft investigators in a tub full of "icy water" several times after his questioning failed to produce satisfactory answers, the Beijing Times said, citing a court filing by prosecutors. They only stopped when Yu, 42, the chief engineer of a stateowned company in the eastern city of Wenzhou, stopped struggling, the report said. He was taken to hospital and died a few hours later. Relatives also found multiple bruises on his body after his death in April, it added. He had been detained since early March over suspected wrongdoings in a land deal, a report said. AFP

APNGOA achieves what politics couldn’t The Association, which is actually meant for non-gazetted employees, has raised the bar for itself and attained the status of a numero uno body in the Seemandhra region. Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The role played by Telangana Non-Gazetted Officers Association (TNGOA) during the Telangana struggle has been valuable to the cause. Now, a similar role is being played AP Non-Gazetted Officers Association (APNGOA) in the ongoing stir by Seemandhra people. The Association, which is actually meant for non-gazetted employees, have raised the bar for itself and attained the status of a numero uno body in the entire Seemandhra region. The status and influence of the Association has grown so much so that even key political parties have begun to follow its commands. A classic example of this is the sudden about-turn premier players like Telugu Desam and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) did over the division of the State. Both the political parties have openly extended support to the demand of United Andhra Pradesh (Samaikya Andhra Pradesh) and kicked off their bus yatras in Seemandhra region. The TDP adopted a Januslike strategy — extending support to the united Andhra Pradesh cause in Seemandhra region while maintaining a proTelangana stance. The YSRCP however, chose to give up T and has sided with the Seemandhra in demanding a united Andhra. The entire credit in forcing these two political parties to take a clear stance goes to APNGOA. The association president P Ashok Babu issued an ultimatum to both the TDP and the YSRCP that they should say yes to a United Andhra Pradesh

Following the ultimatum from the APNGOA, both the TDP and the YSRCP have blamed the Congress for messing things up. Reacting on this, the Association president P Ashok Babu told Postnoon that they were only highlighting the emotional issue of cutting up the state. "Our struggle reflects the emotional angst of the people of Seemandhra. We never expected

that the Centre would announce the division of the state without considering our feelings. We will not accept the division of the state at any cost as it would ruin the lives of all the people of Seemandhra region," he said. According to Babu, the Seemandhra employees are ready to sacrifice anything to achieve their goal. The organisation also played a key role in bringing together all pro-united Andhra Pradesh organisation on one platform and agitate for a single cause. It also succeeded in keeping up the pace of the agitation alive even after 36 days after the beginning of the stir.

Private motorists had a field day today but commuters without a vehicle of their own had to face trouble following the strike by auto-rickshaws across the City. He also told me beforehand that he would drop me midway if they were spotted by the unions than have his auto’s tyres deflated and windshield shattered,” said Ganesh Tati, a resident of Ashok nagar. Passengers, especially those who came to the city from other places were seen struggling for public transport at railway stations and bus depots. “The private taxi drivers at railway stations and bus stops are fleecing people. From Secunderabad Railway station to East Marredpally, a taxi driver demanded `750,” complained Muniraju, who had come to the city from Kadapa this morning. Auto-rickshaw drivers threatened to intensify the strike if their demands were not met. Nagesh Babu, leader of the AITUC said, “Since it’s the first day, it’s a little lax. We will intensify the strike from tomorrow,” he said. Nagesh Babu slammed the GO as baseless. “With no infrastructure facilities provided to the public, how can the government implement such an order?” he asked. “We make only `400-`500 a day: how can we pay hefty fines with that income?” He pointed out that there were no parking areas and if they were to take a break by stopping on the roadside, they are fined. “If we pay all we earn as fines, what will we eat?” he asked.

An auto-rikshaw driver, Shiv Kumar, suffered serious injuries when his vehicle and a speeding car taking a right turn at the unmanned crossing before Nova Hospital on Jubilee Hills Road No 92 collided head-on this morning. The impact threw the auto driver and two women passengers onto the road. The women suffered minor injuries, it is reported. This crossing has neither a policeman manning it nor a speedbreaker, as the traffic coming from Check Post to Road No 92 take an illegal turn to the right in the absence of regulations.

India has a great promise for them, says Sameer. Talking about his return to Hyderabad he says, “I like coming to Hyderabad and my motive of coming here is to promote the art form of Tattooing as Hyderabad is an infant in knowing the tattoo art and the city ought to get matured on what the tattoo art is all about. I have decided to make an annual stop in Hyderabad. “I get a lot of complaints on how the tattoo artists are not that good, but Hyderabad has only a few hand-picks artists, but the demand is more for variety and quality. So I keep coming here due to the demand from people.” Sameer also is set to endorse a German tattoo company which is coming to India soon and says that Indian tattoo market is growing big time. “The tattoo culture in India is on the rise. Rich nations must not harm emerging economies: PM The remarks come at a time when the Indian rupee has dipped below 68 to a dollar, economic growth is at four-year low and stock markets have taken a hit, among other gloomy signs. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said rich nations, which are showing signs of recovery, must not pursue policies that hurt the growth prospects of emerging economies. Ahead of his departure for St. Petersburg for the G20 Summit, the prime minister said the collective focus of rich and developing countries must be on job creation and investment promotion in a bid to spur growth and sustain it. “Though there are encouraging signs of growth in industrialized countries, there is also a slowdown in emerging economies, which are facing the adverse impact of significant capital outflows,” he said. “I will emphasise in St. Petersburg the need for an orderly exit from the unconventional monetary policies being pursued by the developed

CBS television and other US news outlets reported that the former Cleveland, Ohio school bus driver, who was sentenced to life in prison last month, was found dead in his cell late Tuesday. The 53-year-old Castro was found hanging in his cell and officials tried but failed to resuscitate him, according to a statement from the Ohio Department of Corrections, according to TV station KTLA of Los Angeles. The Clouds of war gather The bipartisan measure approved by US lawmakers bans the deployment of any US troops on the ground in Syria, where fighting now in its third year has claimed more than 110,000 lives.

McCain’s poker face WASHINGTON: Senator John McCain, a longtime advocate for forceful military intervention in Syria, was caught playing poker on his smartphone as top administration officials testified at one of the most pivotal congressional hearings of the year. The photographic evidence of McCain making poker bets on his iPhone during the hearing itself offered a startling counterweight to the seriousness in Washington as senators debated whether to sign on to President Barack Obama’s plan to bomb Syria for chemical weapons use. “Scandal!" McCain tweeted sarcastically after an alert Washington Post photographer posted the photo that rapidly made the rounds on Twitter. “Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!" he quipped.

JO BIDDLE & MICHAEL MATHES feedback@postnoon.com WASHINGTON: Top US lawmakers Tuesday began rallying behind President Barack Obama’s plan to launch military strikes against Syria to warn the regime and nations like Iran that the world will never condone chemical weapons. After a passionate plea by US Secretary of State John Kerry not to succumb to “armchair isolationism” after last month’s attack in a Damascus suburb, lawmakers drafted a bipartisan measure imposing a 90-day deadline for any US military intervention. It would also ban the deployment of any US troops on the ground in the war-torn nation, where fighting now in its third year has claimed more than 110,000 lives. The dramatic developments came as the UN refugee agency released grim new statistics revealing more than two million people had now fled the violence in Syria. “This is not the time for armchair isolationism. He warned that other countries such as Iran and North Korea, under fire for its suspect nuclear programs, were closely watching. “They are listening for our

silence," Kerry intoned, during a sometimes heated debate with his former Senate colleagues. His words were echoed by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who said a US refusal to act after Obama had clearly set chemical weapons use as a “red line” would undermine America’s credibility abroad. “The word of the United States must mean something. It is vital currency in foreign relations and international and allied commitments," Hagel stressed.

DEEPAK ADHIKARI feedback@postnoon.com KATHMANDU: After a long drive from across the border in China, the white truck arrived in Nepal’s capital at dawn with a seemingly innocuous cargo of Chinese-made clothes. But hidden in a cylinder inside the vehicle’s front bumper was the latest haul of gold smuggled from Tibet — bars weighing some 35kgs and worth several million dollars on the black market. Nepal’s police were waiting for the truck and its 24-year-old driver just inside the city, after tracking them for several days along the highway that connects Nepal with China. Indian consumers and traders are turning to the cross-border black market as a direct result of efforts to discourage legal imports. But making it harder and more expensive to import gold certainly presents smugglers with opportunities.

“There is a growing demand for gold in India. So the smugglers are cashing in on that," the department’s deputy director general Anand Raj Dhakal said. In a typical smuggling run, trucks transport the hidden gold overland from Tibet into Kathmandu, where the stash is shifted to freight trucks that ply the roads between Nepal and India, says Silwal, who singles out the Indian border town of Raxaul as a smuggling hub. India is the world’s biggest consumer of gold, followed closely by China. People live apart from each other and even neighbours don’t tend to help each other. So more children need community services like foster care.” She adds that children have to wait up to a year before they can be placed in a family. WRESTLING FOR PEACE Never before in the history of Sudan has such a thing has happened: a Japanese man wrestling with the locals to foster peace between the various tribes.

IAN TIMBERLAKE Agence France-Presse KHARTOUM: Never before in a thousands of years of Sudanese Nuba wrestling history, has there been anything like it: a barefoot Japanese diplomat in a tight-fitting blue singlet stepping onto the sandy pitch to take on Sudan’s toughest. Four times this year, Yasuhiro Murotatsu has challenged the Sudanese... and lost all four times. But “Muro” is not giving up. He says his wrestling diplomacy highlights this “precious culture” and can help unite a divided country. The Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan state are home to a linguistically and religiously diverse group of people collectively known as “Nuba”. Wrestling is central to their farm-based society, but for more than two years a more modern form of combat has devastated the region. Non-Arab rebels from South Kordofan have joined with other insurgents from Darfur, in Sudan’s west, in rising against the Arab-dominated regime which they complain has marginalised the regions. “Sudanese wrestling can be a symbol of a united Sudan,” says Murotatsu, 33, a Japanese embassy political officer who tries to spend one hour a day training for his bouts. “That’s why I am fighting. I will be very happy if all tribes... come to Haj Yousef to support Sudanese wrestling. This is my intention,” he said before his latest match at the stadium in the Khartoum district. More than one million people in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states have been

displaced or severely affected by fighting in the area, the UN says. At the same time in Darfur, tribal violence has worsened this year, leaving hundreds dead and uprooting hundreds of thousands more. Murotatsu has competed since February in special “friendship” matches during the regular Friday evening card in

Haj Yousef, a poor neighbourhood of mud-brick houses. He says the Sudanese sport is similar to the more widely-known freestyle wrestling, in which he finished among the top eight when he was in junior high school. “I read about wrestling in Nuba Mountains before I came to Sudan... I became quite interested” and wanted to challenge them. Murotatsu’s opponent is a thin, muscular high school student, Saleh Omar Bol Tia Kafi, who says he has been wrestling since the age of 12. “I would come to the ring, watch the matches, and after that I wrestled with other young boys,” says Kafi, 18. He competes under the nickname “AlMudiriya”, the same moniker used by his father, a wrestler who is “one of the heroes of the Nuba Mountains” — and Kafi’s inspiration. Nuba men would hold impromptu matches while in the fields caring for their cows, Kafi says, wearing a tracksuit in the colours of the Sudanese flag. The war has hit the sport hard in its Nuba homeland but wrestling still takes place, officials say. It is now formally known as “Sudanese” wrestling because it has grown beyond the Nuba community, says Hassan Abu Ras Saliem, deputy chief of the local wrestling federation. “We are fully convinced that this wrestling can unite Sudan,” says Al-Tayeb Ahmed Ajoan, the federation’s secretary general. And that is Muro’s wish, as he sits on the edge of the circular red-earth pitch, stretching before his latest match.

Fans have taken up every inch of the stadium, which was built by the Khartoum state government a year ago. A Darfur native, Abdurrahman Tajideen, said he supported local boy Mudiriya because “he is representing Sudan.” The widening appeal of the sport to people like Tajideen from other ethnic groups means it could help bring peace to the country, and the Nuba region in particular, said wrestling fan Hafiz Sulaiman, a Nuba. Sulaiman was hoping for a Muro victory “because he lost three matches and still came back. This means he has good will”. Hands raised, concentrating in a halfcrouch, the two wrestlers move cautiously, pawing each other like cats as the match begins. The pace picks up. Mudiriya holds Muro around the waist and pulls him into the dirt before the Japanese twists around. Mudiriya is on his back. Muro raises his arms, as if in victory. No, not yet. They play on, Mudiriya’s left shoulder dusted with dirt. After about three minutes he puts Muro on the ground again. Game over. Mudiriya wins. “A lion! He’s a lion!” a female fan calls in his honour as the two athletes are hoisted up by others. “He’s a very good wrestler,” Muro says, vowing a return to the ring. “I cannot withdraw until I get at least one victory.” A win in Khartoum would, he hopes, pave the way for a bout in the wrestling heartland of Nuba itself. “It will be a very good message for peace,” Murotatsu says.

HISTORICAL ‘WAT’TAGE

Angkor’s secrets unveiled The statues, reliefs and temple decorations in the style of the original ninth to 15-century monuments at the site in northern Cambodia are to be exhibited in Paris' Musee Guimet. PASCALE MOLLARD feedback@postnoon.com PARIS: Forgotten and abandoned for over 70 years, casts of the art treasures at the Khmer temple complex at Angkor in Cambodia are coming out of storage to be rediscovered in a Europe that first shunned them. The statues, reliefs and temple decorations in the style of the original ninth to 15-century monuments at the site in northern Cambodia are to be exhibited in Paris' Musee Guimet in all their splendour. The casts made between 1870 and the late 1920s were commissioned by Frenchman Louis Delaporte (1842-1925), a member of the expedition team who "rediscovered" Angkor nearly 150 years ago. Displayed at Paris' Indochina Museum at Trocadero until its closure in 1936, the works were passed from one storage site to another over the next seven decades, some becoming damaged in the process. A year ago, the Musee Guimet took the pieces to a secure warehouse where they were inventoried and in certain cases restored, ready for

the exhibition entitled "Birth of a Myth. Louis Delaporte and Cambodia" that opens October 16. Some 250 works will be shown including the casts and original Khmer art plus photographs and drawings. For several centuries the Angkor complex, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the centre of the powerful Khmer Empire. Stretching over 400 square kilometres (250 square miles), the park contains remains of Khmer capitals, with the impressive 12th-century Angkor Wat temple its bestknown treasure. Delaporte's collection features reliefs of Angkor Wat with extraordinary detail that far eclipses what visitors to the original can see. "At the site, the original (reliefs) are high up and barely visible from the ground," said Pierre Baptiste, exhibition curator and head of the Musee Guimet's southeast Asia section. Among the casts is a plaster tower covered with smiling deities, like the one of the Bayon temple, a major monument at Angkor. It was sawed into bits after 1936 but will be partially put back together for

LEFT TO GATHER DUST

Angkor had already been visited by Europeans including a French naturalist, Henri Mouhot, who wrote of the wonder, before Delaporte joined the 1866-1868 Mekong expedition. Delaporte was stunned by the sights he discovered and was determined that Europeans see the Khmer art for themselves. AROUND THE

WORLD

In 1873 he organised a collection of statues, reliefs and architectural pieces found in the temple ruins to be sent to French museums. At the same time, he commissioned the casts. At first they were ignored by Europe. "When his 102 boxes of Khmer pieces, including originals, arrived in France in 1874, nobody wanted to know," said Baptiste. Even the Louvre refused them. In the end, the works were sent to a chateau north of Paris at Compiegne where Delaporte opened a museum of

Khmer art. Eager to complete his museum collection, Delaporte sent his sculptors to work in Cambodia and produce more casts. But as the 20th century arrived, interest in casts waned and, after the closure of the Trocadero museum, Delaporte's collection was homeless. In 1973, after nearly 40 years, the casts were finally housed in an abbey in northern France but were kept in "dreadful conditions" in humid cellars, said Baptiste. Finally, in late 2011 the French culture ministry took up the cause, moving the casts into proper storage and treating some for fungus. It is hoped the casts, at last proudly displayed in a complete exhibition, will seduce a 21st-century public. The signs are positive: already, people responding to a request by the Musee Guimet for public funds to help restore the cast of a door at Angkor Wat have given thousands of euros. Nearly 20,000 euros in crowd-funding has also been donated through the MyMajor website, with 10,000 euros more needed to include the door in the exhibition. AFP

The return of Kodak The company’s re-emergence opens a new chapter for an enterprise that helped launch photography for the masses in the 20th century. NEW YORK CITY: A slimmeddown Kodak announced that it had emerged from bankruptcy protection and would specialize in technology focused on imaging for businesses. During a 20-month bankruptcy reorganization, Kodak divested many of its most iconic businesses, including its retail film products, its photography paper products and some 105,000 kiosks worldwide. The company’s re-emergence opens a new chapter for an enterprise that helped launch photography for the masses in the 20th century but stumbled amid the digital revolution. The newly-remade Kodak now has about 8,500 employees, a Kodak spokesman said, down from 120,000 workers in 1973. The new company has manufacturing and technology centers in 10 countries and sells products in more than 130 countries. “We have emerged as a technology company serving imaging for business markets — including packaging, functional

printing, graphic communications and professional services," said Kodak chief executive Antonio Perez in a statement. “We are setting a trajectory for profitable growth," Perez said. “We have the right technology at the right time as printing markets increasingly transition to digital." The company has net cash of $695 million above its net debt, a Kodak spokesman said. Kodak divested many of its

operations during the bankruptcy. In the biggest deal, Kodak sold its personalized and document imaging business to the UK Kodak Pension Plan (KPP), its largest creditor. Under the agreement, announced in April, the pension plan agreed to pay Kodak $650 million in exchange for the settlement of $2.8 billion in claims against Kodak. KPP is housing the products under a new company known as Kodak Alaris. The operation will

have some 4,700 employees in about 30 countries, said a KPP news release. Kodak also divested its digital imaging patents for $525 million A New York bankruptcy court had approved Kodak’s reorganization plan on August 20, but the company said at the time it still had some final steps before exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors in January 2012, after 131 years in business, as the company fell behind rivals in digital photography. At the time, Kodak had not reported a profit since 2008 and had accumulated billions of dollars in debt. The Rochester, New Yorkbased company, started in 1892, led the way in popularizing the cameras, film, slide projectors and home videos. Kodak was among the early developers of digital imaging, but lost ground to rivals as the company failed to adapt its business lines.

HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS A friend of HFT had a horrifying thought last night, and rang us up at the oddest hour to tell us about it. This year could be the year when a generation’s icons fade away. Roger Federer, Sachin Tendulkar, the last vestiges of Shane Warne’s old face...all could be gone. We will never sleep again.

THE WEDNESDAY INTERVIEW

14

Caught up in Ron’s Rush SIMPLY SHOWBIZ BETH O’CONNELL

R

acing around the track at breakneck speed, Formula One drivers remind film-maker Ron Howard of combat pilots, or even gladiators. His new movie Rush is about the death-defying thrill of F1 racing and the legendary rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda and Britain’s James Hunt in 1976. “The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel," says the flamboyant Hunt, played by Chris Hemsworth of action hero Thor fame. For the film’s director, it’s almost like they’re going to war. “At the beginning of every year they would have a drivers’ meeting... and a number of people from that time [1970s] told me that you would look around the room and know that a couple of those faces were not going to make it, weren’t going to live through the year," says Howard in a recent interview in Paris. “And that’s what combat pilots talk about." The 59-year-old Hollywood director, bearded and youthfullooking in his usual baseball cap, admits he likes stories where the characters take life to the edge, “putting themselves on the line” - like in Apollo 13. His box office hit was based on the true story of three US astronauts orbiting the Earth in a crippled space capsule,

with that unforgettable line: “Houston, we have a problem." Whether a comedy, drama or true story, “you’re always looking for the test, how are the characters being tested and I’m always interested in seeing how people reach for something that is really, really challenging," Howard says. Rush is set in what he calls the “recklessness” of 1970s F1 racing which was “a golden age for fans, because a lot of people were dying, which made it more gladiatorial and so the danger was with the audience and the

fans every lap.” The film captures the almost ghoulish fascination with racing and the tension on the track in recreating the famous fiery crash of Niki Lauda — played by multi-lingual German actor Daniel Bruehl. Lauda was left disfigured from severe burns but he went on to become an amazing comeback Grand Prix champion. Howard’s next project In the Heart of the Sea tells the tale of the whaleship Essex in 1820 which was attacked by a sperm whale leaving the crew adrift for 90

days, resorting to cannibalism to stay alive. “It’s the events that inspired Herman Melville to write MobyDick 30 years later.... When I learned about it, and their survival story which is both tragic and heroic, really remarkable, I felt like it was a very original kind of story to tackle." Howard is a son of Hollywood having started as a child actor in popular US television sitcoms, first as the young boy Opie on The Andy Griffith Show and then teenager Richie on Happy Days, and what he

wants is to entertain. “I try to choose movies where I think I understand something, but also make me curious enough that I want to learn, and then offer back to audiences in an entertaining way what I think I’ve come to realise." He made his first movie in 1977, another car flick Grand Theft Auto, and won a directing Oscar for the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind. His credits also include Cocoon, Frost/Nixon, and the screen adaptations of Dan Brown’s bestsellers The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. He recalls how he was encouraged to pursue directing by iconic actor Henry Fonda, whom he worked with “in the 70s on a television series that was a complete disaster." But Fonda gave him some advice. “He said to me: ‘If you don’t make creative decisions, where you feel you’re risking your career, every 18 months or two years, you’re playing it too safe, and you’re not going to grow as an artist'." “But you asked me earlier about my interest in stories that are about risk, there’s a lot of emotional risk in being involved in a high-profile way in movies and television... It’s nothing like Formula One or going to the moon... but it’s your life’s work and it sometimes feels like it’s emotional life or death...," Howard tells AFP as he prepares for a screening of Rush at the Toronto film festival on September 8 and its general release later this month.

EDITORIALS The issue of Hyderabad must be decided sooner, rather than later Unlike Fifa, the IOC still has standing

S

o now the rumours are that Hyderabad could well become a Union Territory, something this paper suggested months ago, but it’s too little too late. We have always believed that the creation of a new state, especially one that is home to a burgeoning metropolis like Hyderabad, is not something that can be taken lightly. It is a gargantuan feat of logistics and pragmatism, something that our current crop of politicians wouldn’t know anything about if it slapped them in the face and ran away with their moustaches. The Telugu people deserve more than politicians at the centre and in the state playing roulette with their livelihoods and heritage. They deserve so much better. Now that a separate Telangana is done and dusted, it’s time for the focus to be on the people who live and work in Hyderabad and how to make their lives as safe and easy as possible. All these padyatras and empty rhetoric serve no purpose other than to embellish the image of a politician who will be forgotten faster than a minute thorn in a very large side. People will learn to adapt to whatever situation they are cast in, that is one of humanity’s great virtues. But if they are constantly told they are being shortchanged they will never know the peace they crave.

READERS’ VIEWS

T

he media were up-in-arms agains at what they perceived to be a slight against India, after the IOC stated it would be looking closely at the number of hangers-on that accompanied athletes to international events. Is this a trumped-up charge? Hardly. Our bureaucrats are notorious freebie hunters, and even our own athletes have complained about how this ‘entourage’ expects stellar treatment at the expense of the real stars of the show...the athletes. While the world’s other large sports governing body Fifa is mired in corruption charges reaching up all the way to boss Sepp Blatter, The IOC still retains a semblance of purity, and we use that word loosely. If India wants to be a global sports player, in something other than cricket, it needs to get its house in order...fast

Cinema CASTING LIST T

MOVIE OF THE WEEK RAJU IN MERA NAAM JOKER – SHAH RUKH KHAN

RAJU IN GUIDE - RANBIR KAPOOR

M

era Naam Joker is the story of an entertainer. His life story unfolds in three chapters, from his school days to the circus to the streets, he must always make people laugh and be happy, no matter how unhappy he is within. The range of emotions and the subtlety through which he portrays them is something few actors can match today. Badshah Shah Rukh Khan comes close to doing that role. His ability to emote and give a scene his own special touch is what makes him the best contender to play the part. Like Raj Kapoor, Shah Rukh’s personality too will take the role to greater heights.

his is a movie that revolved around the life of a tour guide. It became synonymous with Dev Anand’s persona. It is believed that Dev Anand was at his best in this movie. His effortless good looks, often likened to Gregory Peck, combined with charisma and characteristics that were his trademark, proved to be an unbeatable recipe for success. Today in Bollywood we have another hero of that similar nature — Ranbir Kapoor. His boyish, good looks, thanks to the Kapoor genes, effortless charm with the ladies, his smooth-talking ways and his dancing skills make him a serious contender for the role, if the film were to be remade.

ANAND IN ANAND - AAMIR KHAN

O

BASANTI IN SHOLAY - PARINEETI CHOPRA

f the many beloved roles that Rajesh Khanna played, perhaps none is etched into the public consciousness more deeply than Anand, the terminally-ill but permanently cheerful cancer patient who teaches Amitabh Bachchan — and, indeed, all of us — important life lessons with the lines: “Ae Babumoshai, zindagi aur maut uparwale ke haath hai. Usse na aap badal sakte hain na main”. A philosophy few can understand. We think if the film were to be remade, perfectionist Aamir Khan would be apt for the role. His comic timing as he has already shown in movies like Andaz Apna Apna, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, etc, his romantic self and his super successful films like Taare Zameen Par and Rang de Basanti definitely gives him an edge over the others. That he believes in espousing such causes is another plus in his favour.

T

alking of Sholay, how can one forget its single iconic female character who could not only stand up to all the testosterone, but who was also feisty enough to handle some action on her own? Basanti in Sholay was Hema Malini’s crowning moment — the pick of her long and very successful career. Talkative to a fault, and independent she is definitely not the stereotypical village belle, there only for the romance and the mandatory songs and dances. In today’s actresses none other new entrant Parineeti Chopra fits the bill. Her films like Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and Ishaqzaade have proved how she can light up the screen with her antics. Her character in Ishaqzaade was bold, brash, talkative and had the right amount of innocence to it as well. Whereas in Ladies vs Ricky Bahl she was seen as the talkative Delhi lass who just can’t keep herself out of trouble and can chat up even a fly.

Bringing back the icons Tollywood actor Ram Charan is making his debut in Bollywood with a remake of Zanjeer. He is essaying Amitabh Bachchan’s role from the original. Will he do justice to it? Friday will tell us. Meanwhile, we take a look at five iconic characters in Hindi cinema and who we would like to see play these roles.

Another actress who is bent on breaking stereotypes and moulds today, is Vidya Balan. She promises to give only entertainment and one can already picture her doing the song Roop Tera Mastana. W

ith James Franco getting the celebrity roast treatment tonight on Comedy Central, Seth Rogen has taken the opportunity to give audiences a preview of his new film. A red band trailer for the upcoming comedy Neighbors — formerly known as Townies — has arrived online courtesy of MTV. Directed by Nicholas Stoller, who previously helmed both Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Five-Year Engagement, the new film centers on a young couple (Rogen, Rose Byrne) who have just had their first child and are looking to start living a nice quiet life in the suburbs. This plan is interrupted, however, when a frat house from the local university moves in next door. While the couple initially try to recapture their youth and hang with the college kids, eventually the relationship between the two houses completely deteriorates and they find themselves in all-out war. The weirdest thing about this red band trailer is the simple fact that it completely lacks anything red band. The only bit in the entire spot getting anywhere near Rrated is the scene where Christopher Mintz-Plasse is having sex with a girl in the bushes next to the house, but the truth is that we’ve seen more risque stuff in greenband trailers.

ith drug resistance threatening the battle against kala azar, which afflicts 350 million in 88 countries, a group of Indian scientists has taken a giant step to develop a potential therapy by using tiny molecules present in the body. Around 65 per cent patients in India have stopped responding to sodium stibogluconate — the drug of choice for the lifethreatening visceral leishmaniasis or kala azar, says Neeloo Singh, senior principal scientist, Central Drug Research Institute Lucknow. Provisional figures by the union health ministry show that kala azar claimed 11 lives and afflicted 7,776 people this year till July. Upping the ante against drug resistance, researchers at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology have pioneered a new strategy to increase the cholesterol level in blood, that in turn significantly slashes the parasite’s numbers. It involves channelising some small molecules that are the direct products of genes. “When we administered the micro RNA (micro Ribonucleic Acid — the small molecules) in excess it increased the cholesterol and at the same time induced clearance of the parasite. It emerged as the potential molecule in combination with other drugs,” Suvendra Nath Bhattacharyya of the Molecular and Human Genetics Division of the IICB told IANS. These micro RNAs (or miRNA) are important for regulating key metabolic processes, including cholesterol metabolism in the liver, and are composed of 22 units of organic molecules called nucleotides. In the body, these mini machines regulate expression of genes and help control production of functional products like proteins. What was of interest to scientists was that the Leishmania parasite (that infects the liver and multiplies in the spleen) brings down the miRNA levels by “targeting an enzyme called dicer that is responsible for the production of these micro regulators”. When the parasite brings down the microRNA, this in turn lowers cholesterol — a condition that is favourable for the parasite to thrive,” Bhattacharyya said. IANS

Technology MARKET WAR

Apple’s the target in MS-Nokia deal Investors cheered the news, as Nokia’s share price soared by 45 percent in opening trading on the Helsinki stock exchange to 4.3 euros.

RAINE TIESSALO Agence France-Presse HELSINKI: Nokia said on Tuesday it was selling its beleaguered mobile phone unit to Microsoft for 5.44 billion euros ($7.17 billion) as the US tech giant tries to fight back against rivals Apple and Google. Investors cheered the news, as Nokia’s share price soared by 45 percent in opening trading on the Helsinki stock exchange to 4.3 euros. Nokia, once the world’s leading mobile phone maker, will grant the US software giant a 10-year non-exclusive licence to its patents and will itself focus on network infrastructure and mapping services, which it called “the best path forward for Nokia and its shareholders.” With Tuesday’s announcement, Microsoft is following in the footsteps of its internet rival Google, which already invested in hardware when it bought US phone manufacturer Motorola. Nokia and Microsoft entered into a partnership in 2011 to create Nokia smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows Phone software. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer told reporters the Nokia acquisition “will accelerate our success in smartphones.” He said Windows Phone was “the fastest growing smart platform today, growing by 78 percent last year.” Analysts saw Tuesday’s

move as a bid to compete with Google and Apple. “The trigger behind this is without a doubt the current restructuring of business at Microsoft in which the tech giant attempts to stem the decline in global product sales,” ETX Capital analyst Ishaq Siddiqi said in a comment. Microsoft “is still behind Apple and Android based handset devices in the global mobile phones market share but under this deal, Microsoft can start to take control of the operation and turn Nokia’s declining handset business into a formidable competitor in a competitive market,” he said. Nokia also announced the immediate departure of chief executive Stephen Elop, who was hired from Microsoft in 2010 to turn the company around. He will be replaced in the interim by Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia’s chairman of the board. Elop will take over Nokia’s mobile phone unit, and will transfer back to Microsoft once the deal is completed, Nokia said, triggering speculation that he could take over as head of Microsoft after Ballmer’s scheduled retirement within the next 12 months. “We expect Elop becomes a

Nokia dominated the mobile phone market for 14 years, until it was overtaken by Samsung in 2012 as the top-selling brand, as it struggled to establish winning business models and mobile devices amid increasing competition from Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy. Rumours of a Nokia sale have swirled in recent months. Nokia dramatically changed its strategy in February 2011 when Elop warned the company was “standing on a burning platform” and needed to shift course immediately. The shake-up involved

phasing out Nokia’s Symbian platform in favour of the partnership with Microsoft, and Nokia bet its future on its new line of Lumia smartphones. But Tuesday’s announcement marks the end of Nokia’s days as a phone manufacturer. “Management concluded that there was no improvement in sight anytime soon. From that point of view, the sale could be a wise decision,” Pohjola bank analyst Hannu Rauhala told the online edition of business daily Taloussanomat. Some 32,000 Nokia employees are expected to transfer to Microsoft, including some 4,700 people in Finland, the company said. The operations affected by the transfer generated approximately 14.9 billion euros in 2012, or almost 50 percent of Nokia’s net sales, it added. Nokia will book a gain on the sale of some 3.2 billion euros, which will “clearly strengthen our financial position and it will provide a solid basis for future investment in Nokia’s continuing businesses,” Siilasmaa said. Last month, Nokia finalised the purchase of German engineering giant Siemens’ 50-percent stake in Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) for 1.7 billion euros.

US online giant Amazon on Tuesday unveiled an improved version of its market-dominating Kindle e-reader. The latest Kindle Paperwhite boasts higher contrast, speedier performance, and enhanced touch-screen technology. “Kindle is the best-selling e-reader in the world for six years running," said Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos. “No one is investing on behalf of readers or pushing the boundaries of hardware, software and content for readers like this team."

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Eoin plays a captain’s knock IAN CALLENDER Agence France-Presse MALAHIDE: Eoin Morgan came home to Malahide and scored a match-winning hundred as England eased to a sixwicket victory over Ireland in the one-off, one-day international on Tuesday. On the ground where he once played senior cricket in front of a handful of spectators as a 13year-old, the Irishman took centre stage with almost 10,000 people watching to finish 124 not out, winning the match with his fourth six. England captain Morgan, leading the side in the absence of the rested Alastair Cook, shared a world record fifth-wicket ODI partnership of 226 with Ravi Bopara, who deservedly reached his century before England chased down their victory target of 270 with an almost ridiculous seven overs to spare. Morgan’s sixth ODI century (five for England and one for Ireland), made seven days short of his 27th birthday, saw him face 106 balls in total during his innings, with eight fours and four sixes. Bopara’s run-rate was even faster, the all-rounder facing 75 balls in all and hitting 15 boundaries, five of them clearing the fence as England enjoyed a morale-boosting win ahead of the five-match ODI series against Australia starting on Friday. “Today has been magnificent to get time in the middle, runs under my belt and to contribute

to an England win,” Morgan told Sky Sports 2. “Time in the middle as a batsman is crucial going into big series. “I was more nervous in the changing-room than I was in the middle. The wicket was tough and challenging. It was a challenge with ball and bat.” Morgan wasn’t the only Irishman in English red on

Sutherland lashes out at racist abuse SYDNEY: Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland has lashed out at “racist comments” directed at Muslim Fawad Ahmed (right) after the leg-spinner asked not to wear a kit displaying the logo of beer brand VB. Pakistanborn Ahmed, who became an Australian citizen in July after his application was fasttracked, did not have the logo on his shirt during his international debut in last week’s T20 matches against England. It emerged Tuesday that he had “expressed discomfort with the conflict this created for him, due to his religious beliefs”. Cricket Australia agreed with his request to wear an unbranded shirt, but this sparked critical comments on the Cricket Australia website

and other social media. “Legitimate reason RELIGION, no its not, it’s a game of cricket, not praying at a church,” said one reaction. “It is driven by money and fans not by religious fanatics. Those who don’t like the Australian culture should leave, or keep misguided values to themselves.” Sutherland said he was disgusted with such comments. AFP

Tuesday. Boyd Rankin, after 38 ODIs for Ireland, was given his debut and was England’s most successful bowler, taking four wickets for 46 runs as Ireland were restricted to 269 for seven. Ireland captain William Porterfield dominated that innings, scoring 112 — his 10th century for Ireland but his first in an ODI for three years since his

115 against Bangladesh at Stormont, still Ireland’s only victory over a Full Member or Test nation on home soil. “It was nice to get a hundred, but a shame it was in a losing side,” said Porterfield, who denied this loss hurt more than most because of the key roles played by two former teammates in Morgan and Rankin.

Finch, Marsh slam tons in Oz win EDINBURGH: Hundreds by Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh propelled Australia to a 200-run win against Scotland in the lone ODI in Edinburgh on Tuesday. Finch made 148 — his maiden ODI century — and Shaun Marsh 151 as the duo shared an Australia record 246 for the first-wicket as the visitors piled up a colossal 362 for three in their 50 overs. Finch’s latest hundred followed his T20 world record 156 against England at Southampton on Thursday. The total was the highest Scotland — a largely amateur side — had ever conceded at this level, with Finch’s runs coming off just 116 balls with 16 fours and seven sixes before he holed out off spinner Majid Haq. Marsh, whose father Geoff helped set the previous Australian firstwicket record of 212 together with David Boon against India at Jaipur in 1986, was slightly more sedate. He faced 149 balls including 16 fours and five sixes. While Finch and Marsh’s individual scores were well down the record list of highest ODI innings, their stand was the sixth highest by an opening duo at this level. AFP

Bowlers shock Pakistan

HARARE: Zimbabwe’s unheralded bowling attack plunged Pakistan into deep trouble on the first day of the first Test at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday. Pakistan were floundering at 182 for eight before tailenders Saeed Ajmal and Junaid Khan added an aggressive 67 for the ninth wicket to enable the tourists to finish the day on 249 for nine. Opening bowlers Tendai Chatara and Tinashe Panyangara, who went into the match with only five Test caps between them, started the Pakistan slide with some disciplined bowling at the start of the day. They were well backed up by off-spinner Prosper Utseya and medium-pacer Shingi Masakadza. But Chatara and Panyangara were guilty of some loose bowling with the second new ball as Ajmal (49 not out) and Junaid

(17) gave the Pakistan innings some respectability. Junaid was out to the fifth ball of the final over of the day when he flashed at Panyangara and was caught behind.

Azhar Ali, who made a patient 78 off 185 balls, and captain Misbah-ul-Haq (53) were the only Pakistan top-order batsmen to shine. They put on 93 for the fourth wicket. AFP

Djokovic, Murray in quarters

DAVE JAMES Agence France-Presse

NEW YORK: World number one Novak Djokovic raced into the US Open quarter-finals for the loss of just three games on Tuesday while defending champion Andy Murray was again involved in a four-set duel. Top seeded Djokovic, the 2011 champion, wrapped up a place in his 18th successive Grand Slam quarter-final when he crushed Spanish world number 43 Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 in just 79 minutes. Andy Murray, the third seed, reached the quarter-finals for a third successive year with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over Denis Istomin, the 64th-ranked Uzbek. Djokovic will next tackle Russian 21st seed Mikhail Youzhny, a semi-finalist in 2006 and 2010, over whom he has an 5-3 career lead. Youzhny carved out a fourhour, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 7-5 win over 2001 champion Lleyon Hewitt after trailing 4-1 in the

fourth set and 5-2 in the fifth. Swiss ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka reached the last eight by eliminating Czech fifth seed Tomas Berdych, a semi-finalist last year, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2. Wawrinka will now face Murray for a place in the last four, trailing 8-5 in their series, although he did win their 2010 US Open third-round meeting. The 26-year-old Murray took his record in the majors this year to 17-1 with his second win of 2013 over Istomin after also seeing off the Uzbek player on his way to the Brisbane title in January. Istomin, who has been coached by his mother Klaudiya since his junior days, sported a bright orange shirt for the encounter and he had Murray dazzled in the first set. “It was tough with a strong breeze and we both struggled with our timing,” said Murray. “I tried to dictate the points after the first set when I had the wind with me and use my forehand more.”

Get off Federer’s No mercy for birthday girl back: Novak JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse

NEW YORK: Novak Djokovic leaped to the defense of Roger Federer (in pic) on Tuesday, telling critics of the slumping Swiss to give the 17time major winner a break. Federer suffered a stunning US Open fourth round straight-sets upset at the hands of Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo on Monday. It is the first year since 2002 that the 32-year-old has not made a Grand Slam final and sparked feverish speculation over his future in the sport with the loss to Robredo coming on the heels of a second-round exit at Wimbledon. “Roger did not play close to his maximum level so it’s always a question of why is he not playing well. People need to give him a break a little bit, because I think it’s normal to expect that he’s not moving as well as he did when he was No. 1 and he was so dominant,” said the Serb. “For me, he’s still playing really well and definitely deserves to be one of the top five players in the world, no

question about it.” Djokovic said he would not be advising Federer on what his future plans should be. “How long he’s going to play? That’s a question for him. But he’s what, 31, 32 years old? Tommy Haas is 35 and close to the top 10. So I think people are seeing Roger always being a top three, top two guy and competing for Grand Slam titles.” AFP

NEW YORK: Defending champion Serena Williams inflicted the most lopsided US Open women’s quarter-final defeat in 24 years on birthday-girl Carla Suarez Navarro to reach a semifinal against China’s Li Na. Williams routed the 18thseeded Spaniard 6-0, 6-0 in just 52 minutes on Tuesday, Suarez Navarro’s 25th birthday, to reach a matchup Friday with Li, the 2011 French Open champion who ousted Russian 24th seed Ekaterina Makarova. Williams, a 16-time Grand Slam winner seeking her fifth US Open crown and ninth title of the year, has dropped only 13 games in five wins on her way to the semis for a fifth US Open appearance in a row. Asked if this was her most dominant US Open performance, Williams said, “I guess so. I haven’t thought about it yet. I’m still in the tournament and I’m not thinking about, like, ‘I’m really dominant now.’ “I’m just thinking, ‘OK, I just have a really tough match in the next round and I really want to do well.” Williams, who would be the oldest women’s champion

career meetings, was the first Spanish woman in a US Open quarter-final since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in 1998. Williams hit 20 winners while Suarez Navarro managed only 18 points in the match, just three off winners on a windy night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. AFP

‘Lack of confidence was the issue’ New Arsenal signing Mesut Ozil admits that he had no intention of leaving his former club Real Madrid until he realised that he risked being left on the sidelines.

BERLIN: New Arsenal signing Mesut Ozil (right) admits that he had no intention of leaving Real Madrid until realising that he risked being left on the sidelines in the Spanish capital. Ozil saw Gareth Bale complete his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to the Santiago Bernabeu earlier on Monday before agreeing to move to the Emirates Stadium for a reported £42.4 million ($66 million, 50 million euros). And the Germany playmaker later said in an interview with the German Football Association’s official website, www.dfb.de, that he agreed to the move after it became clear that he no longer figured in the plans of Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “At that moment (a few days

Bale short of fitness LONDON: Wales manager Chris Coleman said on Tuesday that Real Madrid new boy Gareth Bale cannot play for 90 minutes in the World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Serbia. Bale (below) flew to the Welsh capital Cardiff on Monday evening after being presented to Madrid fans at the Bernabeu earlier in the day following his move from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of around £80 million ($124 million, 94 million euros). Reports in Britain say Madrid paid a worldrecord fee of £86 million for Bale, but Spanish estimates put the fee at around £77 million. Speaking to the media after his presentation, Bale said he wanted to use the time with Wales in order to build up his fitness, but as he has not played since July, Coleman plans to handle him with care. “If he is not ready we will not risk him, regardless of whether it is a world-record fee,” Coleman told a press conference in Cardiff. “We are aware a lot of people will want to see him play in the home game against Serbia. why I chose to go there.” Now he is looking forward to linking up with international colleagues such as Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski in north London, as well as working for Arsenal’s German-speaking manager Arsene Wenger. “Arsene Wenger showed confidence in me and now I will be able to continue progressing as a player. I want to be on top form for the World Cup,” the for-

mer Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen player, 24, said. “I spoke to him for a long time on the telephone and he explained to me how he thinks football should be played. “Naturally, I am delighted to now be able to play with Podolski and Mertesacker. I am really satisfied with this new challenge, I know already that they have brilliant supporters, that the stadium is super and that there is class in the team.” Ozil is currently with the Germany squad preparing for the World Cup qualifying double-header against Austria on Friday in Munich and the Faroe Islands away next Tuesday. His Arsenal debut could come in their next Premier League fixture, at Sunderland on Saturday, September 14. AFP

United overtaken in transfer rush

TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse

LONDON: After an unconvincing start to the season, Manchester United supporters witnessed the equally unusual sight of their club frantically scrambling for players in the closing moments of transfer deadline day. Their patience was finally rewarded, three hours after the deadline passed, when United confirmed the signing of midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Everton. But for all his rugged qualities and eye for goal, the gangly Belgian with the afro haircut was not quite the stellar acquisition the club’s fans had been hoping for, and the details of the transaction made for uncomfortable reading as well. Everton revealed that United had paid £27.5 million ($42.7 million, 32.4 million euros) for the 25-year-old, which was £4 million more than they would have had to part with had they exercised an option in the player’s contract that expired at the end of July. United had also seen a joint-bid of £28 million for Fellaini and his Everton team-mate Leighton Baines rejected in late August, suggesting the English champions were forced into a corner when they returned for the Belgian late on Monday. Manchester United’s dealings could not be judged an outright success when framed against the flurry of arrivals elsewhere. la the only other close-season arrival at Old Trafford, it proved a chastening first transfer window for new manager David Moyes and incoming chief executive Ed Woodward. United saw tentative approaches for players including Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara knocked back in the early stages of the transfer window, while last-ditch moves for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera came to noth-

But just not a man utd player,” was the damning Twitter verdict of former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler. The Daily Telegraph newspaper spoke of “humiliation”. Moyes, however, claimed that Fellaini, with whom he worked at Everton, was “one of the best midfielders in the Premier League”, while his most significant piece of transferwindow business may yet prove to be persuading unsettled striker Wayne Rooney to stay at the club. Nonetheless, United’s dealings could not be judged an outright success when framed against the flurry of arrivals elsewhere. In total, England’s top-flight clubs lavished an unprecedented total of £630 million on new players, as confidence sparked by a new £5.5 billion television rights package translated into a glut of expensive signings. Tottenham Hotspur were the most conspicuous market actors, spending around £110 million on seven new players, but they also lost star forward Gareth Bale to Real Madrid and had their thunder stolen by Arsenal’s audacious capture of German playmaker Mesut Ozil for a club-record fee of £42.4 million.
