TN jeweller robbed, beaten MOHD SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: A man, Balakrishna, 52, who claims to be a gold jeweller from Tamil Nadu was allegedly conned and robbed of jewellery worth `38 lakh by a gang of four.

Mahankali police, investigating the case, said Balakrishna frequented Hyderabad jewellery shops with designed gold jewelleries for many years. He would come with or without orders once a while and sell ornaments.

Recently, he was on his rounds with gold jewellery worth around `40 lakh. He was put up at a lodge in the RP Road area in Secunderabad.

During Balakrishna’s stay there, a person who introduced himself as Vijay contacted him on phone and showed interest

Balakrishna carried the gold in his briefcase. Vijay took him to a second person, Raju, who was having cash and once there, the duo took him to a place in Bachupally.

Balakrishna told the police

that the he was taken to an isolated location. The duo then bargained for the gold and the price was fixed at `38.63 lakh.

As Balakrishna was relieved that at last a business deal was struck, in walked a couple of strangers who threw chilli powder in his eyes and gave him a

thrashing. After snatching the bag they escaped unchallenged.

The complainant said he suspected the unknown persons were accomplices of Vijay and Raju as they made no attempt to stop the robbers.

The two however pleaded innocent and that they left Balakrishna commiserating with him for the loss. Later Balakrishna tried to contact them on the mobile phone but they were switched off.

any families are forced to live in rental houses in Azad Chandra Shekhar Nagar and Addagutta due to delay in Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project.

The state government implemented the scheme to provide the roof for homeless in 2010 in this area but only half the blocks were completed while the remaining are to be built within a year as per the government orders.

ing from various problems due to this delay, approached the Hyderabad collector the other day seeking redress to their problem.

The Collector Mukesh Kumar Meena, ordered the Revenue Divisional Officer to look into the matter and he assured the locals that their problem would be solved soon.

The residents of Addagutta, who are waiting for their houses for more than two years, told Postnoon that more than 300 families are staying in rental houses from the time they evacuated their huts for the flats.

APNGOA achieves what politics couldn’t The Association, which is actually meant for non-gazetted employees, has raised the bar for itself and attained the status of a numero uno body in the Seemandhra region.

by Telangana Non-Gazetted Officers Association (TNGOA) during the Telangana struggle has been valuable to the cause.

Now, a similar role is being played AP Non-Gazetted Officers Association (APNGOA) in the ongoing stir by Seemandhra people. The Association, which is actually meant for non-gazetted employees, have raised the bar for itself and attained the status of a numero uno body in the entire Seemandhra region.

The status and influence of the Association has grown so much so that even key political parties have begun to follow its commands. A classic example of this is the sudden about-turn premier players like Telugu Desam and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) did over the division of the State. Both the political parties have openly extended support to the demand of United Andhra Pradesh (Samaikya Andhra Pradesh) and kicked off their bus yatras in Seemandhra region.

The TDP adopted a Januslike strategy — extending support to the united Andhra Pradesh cause in Seemandhra region while maintaining a proTelangana stance. The YSRCP however, chose to give up T and has sided with the Seemandhra in demanding a united Andhra.

The entire credit in forcing these two political parties to take a clear stance goes to APNGOA. The association president P Ashok Babu issued an ultimatum to both the TDP and the YSRCP that they should say yes to a United Andhra Pradesh

"Our struggle reflects the emotional angst of the people of Seemandhra. We never expected

that the Centre would announce the division of the state without considering our feelings. We will not accept the division of the state at any cost as it would ruin the lives of all the people of Seemandhra region," he said.

According to Babu, the Seemandhra employees are ready to sacrifice anything to achieve their goal. The organisation also played a key role in bringing together all pro-united Andhra Pradesh organisation on one platform and agitate for a single cause. It also succeeded in keeping up the pace of the agitation alive even after 36 days after the beginning of the stir.

Private motorists had a field day today but commuters without a vehicle of their own had to face trouble following the strike by auto-rickshaws across the City. But the APSRTC which could have cashed in on the situation sat tight.

The strike’s is in protest against the state government’s not cancelling GO 108, which has raised the minimum penalty for traffic violations to `1,000.

Passengers, especially those who came to the city from other places were seen struggling for public transport at railway stations and bus depots.

“The private taxi drivers at railway stations and bus stops are fleecing people. From Secunderabad Railway station to East Marredpally, a taxi driver demanded `750,” complained Muniraju, who had come to the city from Kadapa this morning.

WRESTLING FOR PEACE Never before in the history of Sudan has such a thing has happened: a Japanese man wrestling with the locals to foster peace between the various tribes.

IAN TIMBERLAKE Agence France-Presse KHARTOUM: Never before in a thousands of years of Sudanese Nuba wrestling history, has there been anything like it: a barefoot Japanese diplomat in a tight-fitting blue singlet stepping onto the sandy pitch to take on Sudan’s toughest.

Four times this year, Yasuhiro Murotatsu has challenged the Sudanese... and lost all four times.

But “Muro” is not giving up. He says his wrestling diplomacy highlights this “precious culture” and can help unite a divided country.

The Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan state are home to a linguistically and religiously diverse group of people collectively known as “Nuba”.

Wrestling is central to their farm-based society, but for more than two years a more modern form of combat has devastated the region.

Non-Arab rebels from South Kordofan have joined with other insurgents from Darfur, in Sudan’s west, in rising against the Arab-dominated regime which they complain has marginalised the regions.

“Sudanese wrestling can be a symbol of a united Sudan,” says Murotatsu, 33, a Japanese embassy political officer who tries to spend one hour a day training for his bouts.

“That’s why I am fighting. I will be very happy if all tribes... come to Haj Yousef to support Sudanese wrestling.

This is my intention,” he said before his latest match at the stadium in the Khartoum district.

Murotatsu’s opponent is a thin, muscular high school student, Saleh Omar Bol Tia Kafi, who says he has been wrestling since the age of 12.

“I would come to the ring, watch the matches, and after that I wrestled with other young boys,” says Kafi, 18.

He competes under the nickname “AlMudiriya”, the same moniker used by his father, a wrestler who is “one of the heroes of the Nuba Mountains” — and Kafi’s inspiration.

Nuba men would hold impromptu matches while in the fields caring for their cows, Kafi says, wearing a tracksuit in the colours of the Sudanese flag.

The war has hit the sport hard in its Nuba homeland but wrestling still takes place, officials say.

It is now formally known as “Sudanese” wrestling because it has grown beyond the Nuba community, says Hassan Abu Ras Saliem, deputy chief of the local wrestling federation.

“We are fully convinced that this wrestling can unite Sudan,” says Al-Tayeb Ahmed Ajoan, the federation’s secretary general.

And that is Muro’s wish, as he sits on the edge of the circular red-earth pitch, stretching before his latest match.

The statues, reliefs and temple decorations in the style of the original ninth to 15-century monuments at the site in northern Cambodia are to be exhibited in Paris' Musee Guimet in all their splendour.

The casts made between 1870 and the late 1920s were commissioned by Frenchman Louis Delaporte (1842-1925), a member of the expedition team who "rediscovered" Angkor nearly 150 years ago.

Displayed at Paris' Indochina Museum at Trocadero until its closure in 1936, the works were passed from one storage site to another over the next seven decades, some becoming damaged in the process.

A year ago, the Musee Guimet took the pieces to a secure warehouse where they were inventoried and in certain cases restored, ready for

the exhibition entitled "Birth of a Myth. Louis Delaporte and Cambodia" that opens October 16.

Some 250 works will be shown including the casts and original Khmer art plus photographs and drawings.

For several centuries the Angkor complex, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the centre of the powerful Khmer Empire.

Stretching over 400 square kilometres (250 square miles), the park contains remains of Khmer capitals, with the impressive 12th-century Angkor Wat temple its bestknown treasure.

Delaporte's collection features reliefs of Angkor Wat with extraordinary detail that far eclipses what visitors to the original can see.

"At the site, the original (reliefs) are high up and barely visible from the ground," said Pierre Baptiste, exhibition curator and head of the Musee Guimet's southeast Asia section.

Among the casts is a plaster tower covered with smiling deities, like the one of the Bayon temple, a major monument at Angkor. It was sawed into bits after 1936 but will be partially put back together for

One of these temples might take a place beside our most beautiful buildings. It is grander than anything left by Greece or Rome, and presents a sad contrast to the state of barbarism in which the nation is now plunged.

LEFT TO GATHER DUST

Angkor had already been visited by Europeans including a French naturalist, Henri Mouhot, who wrote of the wonder, before Delaporte joined the 1866-1868 Mekong expedition.

Delaporte was stunned by the sights he discovered and was determined that Europeans see the Khmer art for themselves.

In 1873 he organised a collection of statues, reliefs and architectural pieces found in the temple ruins to be sent to French museums. At the same time, he commissioned the casts. At first they were ignored by Europe.

"When his 102 boxes of Khmer pieces, including originals, arrived in France in 1874, nobody wanted to know," said Baptiste. Even the Louvre refused them.

In the end, the works were sent to a chateau north of Paris at Compiegne where Delaporte opened a museum of

Khmer art.

Eager to complete his museum collection, Delaporte sent his sculptors to work in Cambodia and produce more casts. But as the 20th century arrived, interest in casts waned and, after the closure of the Trocadero museum, Delaporte's collection was homeless.

In 1973, after nearly 40 years, the casts were finally housed in an abbey in northern France but were kept in "dreadful conditions" in humid cellars, said Baptiste.

Finally, in late 2011 the French culture ministry took up the cause, moving the casts into proper storage and treating some for fungus.

It is hoped the casts, at last proudly displayed in a complete exhibition, will seduce a 21st-century public.

The signs are positive: already, people responding to a request by the Musee Guimet for public funds to help restore the cast of a door at Angkor Wat have given thousands of euros.

Nearly 20,000 euros in crowd-funding has also been donated through the MyMajor website, with 10,000 euros more needed to include the door in the exhibition.

NEW YORK CITY: A slimmeddown Kodak announced that it had emerged from bankruptcy protection and would specialize in technology focused on imaging for businesses.

During a 20-month bankruptcy reorganization, Kodak divested many of its most iconic businesses, including its retail film products, its photography paper products and some 105,000 kiosks worldwide.

The company’s re-emergence opens a new chapter for an enterprise that helped launch photography for the masses in the 20th century but stumbled amid the digital revolution.

The newly-remade Kodak now has about 8,500 employees, a Kodak spokesman said, down from 120,000 workers in 1973.

The new company has manufacturing and technology centers in 10 countries and sells products in more than 130 countries.

“We have emerged as a technology company serving imaging for business markets — including packaging, functional

printing, graphic communications and professional services," said Kodak chief executive Antonio Perez in a statement.

“We are setting a trajectory for profitable growth," Perez said. “We have the right technology at the right time as printing markets increasingly transition to digital."

The company has net cash of $695 million above its net debt, a Kodak spokesman said.

Kodak divested many of its

operations during the bankruptcy. In the biggest deal, Kodak sold its personalized and document imaging business to the UK Kodak Pension Plan (KPP), its largest creditor.

Under the agreement, announced in April, the pension plan agreed to pay Kodak $650 million in exchange for the settlement of $2.8 billion in claims against Kodak.

KPP is housing the products under a new company known as Kodak Alaris. The operation will

have some 4,700 employees in about 30 countries, said a KPP news release. Kodak also divested its digital imaging patents for $525 million A New York bankruptcy court had approved Kodak’s reorganization plan on August 20, but the company said at the time it still had some final steps before exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors in January 2012, after 131 years in business, as the company fell behind rivals in digital photography. At the time, Kodak had not reported a profit since 2008 and had accumulated billions of dollars in debt.

The Rochester, New Yorkbased company, started in 1892, led the way in popularizing the cameras, film, slide projectors and home videos.

Kodak was among the early developers of digital imaging, but lost ground to rivals as the company failed to adapt its business lines.

Caught up in Ron’s Rush SIMPLY SHOWBIZ BETH O’CONNELL

R

acing around the track at breakneck speed, Formula One drivers remind film-maker Ron Howard of combat pilots, or even gladiators.

His new movie Rush is about the death-defying thrill of F1 racing and the legendary rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda and Britain’s James Hunt in 1976. “The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel," says the flamboyant Hunt, played by Chris Hemsworth of action hero Thor fame. For the film’s director, it’s almost like they’re going to war.

“At the beginning of every year they would have a drivers’ meeting... and a number of people from that time [1970s] told me that you would look around the room and know that a couple of those faces were not going to make it, weren’t going to live through the year," says Howard in a recent interview in Paris.

“And that’s what combat pilots talk about."

The 59-year-old Hollywood director, bearded and youthfullooking in his usual baseball cap, admits he likes stories where the characters take life to the edge, “putting themselves on the line” - like in Apollo 13. His box office hit was based on the true story of three US astronauts orbiting the Earth in a crippled space capsule,

with that unforgettable line: “Houston, we have a problem."

Whether a comedy, drama or true story, “you’re always looking for the test, how are the characters being tested and I’m always interested in seeing how people reach for something that is really, really challenging," Howard says.

Rush is set in what he calls the “recklessness” of 1970s F1 racing which was “a golden age for fans, because a lot of people were dying, which made it more gladiatorial and so the danger was with the audience and the

fans every lap.”

The film captures the almost ghoulish fascination with racing and the tension on the track in recreating the famous fiery crash of Niki Lauda — played by multi-lingual German actor Daniel Bruehl. Lauda was left disfigured from severe burns but he went on to become an amazing comeback Grand Prix champion.

Howard’s next project In the Heart of the Sea tells the tale of the whaleship Essex in 1820 which was attacked by a sperm whale leaving the crew adrift for 90

days, resorting to cannibalism to stay alive.

“It’s the events that inspired Herman Melville to write MobyDick 30 years later.... When I learned about it, and their survival story which is both tragic and heroic, really remarkable, I felt like it was a very original kind of story to tackle."

Howard is a son of Hollywood having started as a child actor in popular US television sitcoms, first as the young boy Opie on The Andy Griffith Show and then teenager Richie on Happy Days, and what he

wants is to entertain.

“I try to choose movies where I think I understand something, but also make me curious enough that I want to learn, and then offer back to audiences in an entertaining way what I think I’ve come to realise."

He made his first movie in 1977, another car flick Grand Theft Auto, and won a directing Oscar for the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind. His credits also include Cocoon, Frost/Nixon, and the screen adaptations of Dan Brown’s bestsellers The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

He recalls how he was encouraged to pursue directing by iconic actor Henry Fonda, whom he worked with “in the 70s on a television series that was a complete disaster." But Fonda gave him some advice.

“He said to me: ‘If you don’t make creative decisions, where you feel you’re risking your career, every 18 months or two years, you’re playing it too safe, and you’re not going to grow as an artist'."

“But you asked me earlier about my interest in stories that are about risk, there’s a lot of emotional risk in being involved in a high-profile way in movies and television... It’s nothing like Formula One or going to the moon... but it’s your life’s work and it sometimes feels like it’s emotional life or death...," Howard tells AFP as he prepares for a screening of Rush at the Toronto film festival on September 8 and its general release later this month.

o now the rumours are that Hyderabad could well become a Union Territory, something this paper suggested months ago, but it’s too little too late. We have always believed that the creation of a new state, especially one that is home to a burgeoning metropolis like Hyderabad, is not something that can be taken lightly. It is a gargantuan feat of logistics and pragmatism, something that our current crop of politicians wouldn’t know anything about if it slapped them in the face and ran away with their moustaches. The Telugu people deserve more than politicians at the centre and in the state playing roulette with their livelihoods and heritage. They deserve so much better. Now that a separate Telangana is done and dusted, it’s time for the focus to be on the people who live and work in Hyderabad and how to make their lives as safe and easy as possible. All these padyatras and empty rhetoric serve no purpose other than to embellish the image of a politician who will be forgotten faster than a minute thorn in a very large side. People will learn to adapt to whatever situation they are cast in, that is one of humanity’s great virtues. But if they are constantly told they are being shortchanged they will never know the peace they crave.

Usse na aap badal sakte hain na main”. A philosophy few can understand. We think if the film were to be remade, perfectionist Aamir Khan would be apt for the role. His comic timing as he has already shown in movies like Andaz Apna Apna, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, etc, his romantic self and his super successful films like Taare Zameen Par and Rang de Basanti definitely gives him an edge over the others.

That he believes in espousing such causes is another plus in his favour.

Basanti in Sholay was Hema Malini’s crowning moment — the pick of her long and very successful career. Talkative to a fault, and independent she is definitely not the stereotypical village belle, there only for the romance and the mandatory songs and dances. In today’s actresses none other new entrant Parineeti Chopra fits the bill.

Her films like Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and Ishaqzaade have proved how she can light up the screen with her antics. Her character in Ishaqzaade was bold, brash, talkative and had the right amount of innocence to it as well. Whereas in Ladies vs Ricky Bahl she was seen as the talkative Delhi lass who just can’t keep herself out of trouble and can chat up even a fly.

Bringing back the icons Tollywood actor Ram Charan is making his debut in Bollywood with a remake of Zanjeer. He is essaying Amitabh Bachchan’s role from the original.

ith James Franco getting the celebrity roast treatment tonight on Comedy Central, Seth Rogen has taken the opportunity to give audiences a preview of his new film. A red band trailer for the upcoming comedy Neighbors — formerly known as Townies — has arrived online courtesy of MTV. Directed by Nicholas Stoller, who previously helmed both Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Five-Year Engagement, the new film centers on a young couple (Rogen, Rose Byrne) who have just had their first child and are looking to start living a nice quiet life in the suburbs. This plan is interrupted, however, when a frat house from the local university moves in next door. While the couple initially try to recapture their youth and hang with the college kids, eventually the relationship between the two houses completely deteriorates and they find themselves in all-out war.

The weirdest thing about this red band trailer is the simple fact that it completely lacks anything red band. The only bit in the entire spot getting anywhere near Rrated is the scene where Christopher Mintz-Plasse is having sex with a girl in the bushes next to the house, but the truth is that we’ve seen more risque stuff in greenband trailers.

ith drug resistance threatening the battle against kala azar, which afflicts 350 million in 88 countries, a group of Indian scientists has taken a giant step to develop a potential therapy by using tiny molecules present in the body.

Around 65 per cent patients in India have stopped responding to sodium stibogluconate — the drug of choice for the lifethreatening visceral leishmaniasis or kala azar, says Neeloo Singh, senior principal scientist, Central Drug Research Institute Lucknow.

Provisional figures by the union health ministry show that kala azar claimed 11 lives and afflicted 7,776 people this year till July. Upping the ante against drug resistance, researchers at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology have pioneered a new strategy to increase the cholesterol level in blood, that in turn significantly slashes the parasite’s numbers. It involves channelising some small molecules that are the direct products of genes.

“When we administered the micro RNA (micro Ribonucleic Acid — the small molecules) in excess it increased the cholesterol and at the same time induced clearance of the parasite. It emerged as the potential molecule in combination with other drugs,” Suvendra Nath Bhattacharyya of the Molecular and Human Genetics Division of the IICB told IANS. These micro RNAs (or miRNA) are important for regulating key metabolic processes, including cholesterol metabolism in the liver, and are composed of 22 units of organic molecules called nucleotides. In the body, these mini machines regulate expression of genes and help control production of functional products like proteins.

What was of interest to scientists was that the Leishmania parasite (that infects the liver and multiplies in the spleen) brings down the miRNA levels by “targeting an enzyme called dicer that is responsible for the production of these micro regulators”.

When the parasite brings down the microRNA, this in turn lowers cholesterol — a condition that is favourable for the parasite to thrive,” Bhattacharyya said.

Nokia, once the world’s leading mobile phone maker, will grant the US software giant a 10-year non-exclusive licence to its patents and will itself focus on network infrastructure and mapping services, which it called “the best path forward for Nokia and its shareholders.”

With Tuesday’s announcement, Microsoft is following in the footsteps of its internet rival Google, which already invested in hardware when it bought US phone manufacturer Motorola.

Nokia and Microsoft entered into a partnership in 2011 to create Nokia smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows Phone software.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer told reporters the Nokia acquisition “will accelerate our success in smartphones.”

Last month, Nokia finalised the purchase of German engineering giant Siemens’ 50-percent stake in Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) for 1.7 billion euros.

US online giant Amazon on Tuesday unveiled an improved version of its market-dominating Kindle e-reader. The latest Kindle Paperwhite boasts higher contrast, speedier performance, and enhanced touch-screen technology.

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Bale short of fitness LONDON: Wales manager Chris Coleman said on Tuesday that Real Madrid new boy Gareth Bale cannot play for 90 minutes in the World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Serbia.

Bale (below) flew to the Welsh capital Cardiff on Monday evening after being presented to Madrid fans at the Bernabeu earlier in the day following his move from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of around £80 million ($124 million, 94 million euros).

Reports in Britain say Madrid paid a worldrecord fee of £86 million for Bale, but Spanish estimates put the fee at around £77 million.

Speaking to the media after his presentation, Bale said he wanted to use the time with Wales in order to build up his fitness, but as he has not played since July, Coleman plans to handle him with care.

LONDON: After an unconvincing start to the season, Manchester United supporters witnessed the equally unusual sight of their club frantically scrambling for players in the closing moments of transfer deadline day.

Their patience was finally rewarded, three hours after the deadline passed, when United confirmed the signing of midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Everton.

But for all his rugged qualities and eye for goal, the gangly Belgian with the afro haircut was not quite the stellar acquisition the club’s fans had been hoping for, and the details of the transaction made for uncomfortable reading as well.

Everton revealed that United had paid £27.5 million ($42.7 million, 32.4 million euros) for the 25-year-old, which was £4 million more than they would have had to part with had they exercised an option in the player’s contract that expired at the end of July.
