Rumours that AP planned to ban women from pubs after 10pm sparked a tide of criticism on the Web. Women cops turn blind eye

The belief that women police would be more sensitive to crimes against woman is flawed. The Begumpet women police treat cruelty against women with indolence, Postnoon finds out. Mohd SUBHAN

espite the law mandating summary arrest of the husband and in-laws in domestic violence against women, City police go dilly-dallying on the plea that the case is “under investigation.” In the last 48 hours, four domestic cruelty cases against hapless women were reported to the police but no arrests have been made. In these cases, women, beaten and abused, were thrown out of their homes for not giving more dowry. According to reports, in the first case, a woman named Kavitha, a resident of Tarnaka,

lodged a complaint against her businessman husband, Madhukar Swamy, a resident of Karvan, who she said had forcibly thrown her out of the house for not bringing more dowry. This, she said, was despite her parents giving `4 lakh in cash, 20 tolas of gold and other valuables at the time of marriage in 2008. She said both her husband and in-laws tortured her mentally and physically for all these years. In the second incident, Saraswathy, 27, of Addagutta reported that her husband, Venkatesh, 32, a resident of Shameerpet, had been demanding more dowry since she delivered a baby girl two years ago. The husband and his mother Pentamma had allegedly cursed her for delivering a baby girl and demanded more dowry to

‘compensate’ for it. This was despite her pleading that the sex of the baby has more to do with the man than with the woman. The third incident was reported in Parsigutta of Secunderabad where a woman, Bhawani, 27, accused her hus-

band Sudheer of torturing her for dowry. Theirs was a love marriage disapproved by their parents. Sudheer, employed with a private firm, and his mother began to taunt her a few months of marriage. A meeting of the elders of the two families was

called but the girl’s parents said they had not consented for the marriage as they knew the man is unworthy of her. This enraged the husband and his mother even more and they began to beat her up. After a while, a reconciliation was effected and the two started living in peace for a while, before she was subjected to cruel treatment again. In yet another incident reported from Hyderguda, Swetha, 27, charged her husband, Mahinder, 31, a resident of Jamai Osmania, of cruelty despite getting a fat dowry. They got married in 2011 and the parents had reportedly given `6 lakh in cash, 25 tolas of gold, a motorcycle, and other valuables. They had even given `1 lakh to Mahinder’s mother as a ‘gift.’ Despite all this, the in-laws and husband tortured the woman for more money.

Netas under cyber attack What the law failed to achieve, hackers pledge to attain. Hacker threat to smartphones owned by leading politicians has put fear in leaders. Ironically, it is the leaders themselves who started the game of prying on rivals! Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

Secretive matters are in danger of falling in the wrong hands (which in police parlance is the right hands). There could be anything between 100 and 150 of them dedicated to pry open the bigwigs’ smartphones. Messages passed on these phones asking their leaders or cadres to do things not ‘very legal’ can pose a real danger in these times, says City cyber crime cell. “The fact that every smartphone allows internet access has come as a big boon for the hackers. Traffic tutorials on the cards From short films on road rules to awareness programmes in schools and colleges, the Hyderabad traffic police are going to great lengths to make City roads safer.

ALEENA ALICE

aleena.t@postnoon.com

T

he increasing number of vehicles on the road in the City and the underconstruction Metro rail are adding to the traffic woes of the already crowded City. With more traffic, it is inevitable that traffic violations and road accidents too will increase. In order to sensitise people on the importance of road safety and to educate them about traffic rules, the Hyderabad traffic police is gearing up to introduce different kinds of awareness programmes. Come May 15, around six short films on road safety will hit the theatres. Watching movies is something Hyderabadis love and what better way to reach out to the people, say the City traffic police. “We have produced six short films about road safety and awareness. These films will be launched for screening in theatres on May 15. Our aim is to reach out to maximum number of people to sensitise them about the importance of road safety, and one of the best ways is through movies,” says the additional commissioner of police (traffic) CV Anand.

As a part of their awareness programmes, the traffic police will also reach out to schools and junior colleges in the City from this academic year. A road safety class and awareness on traffic rules will be taught to students of Class VI to Class XII. Once a week, students will be given an hour’s class on road safety, and though it will not be a part of their syllabus, the programme will be a compulsory extracurricular activity. “Learning at a young age is more productive, so we plan on

national anthem is an important aspect of an independent country, one that unites its citizens under the umbrella of a common identity. This thought has inspired Sahara India Pariwar to celebrate its annual Bharat Bhawna Divas by having its employees sing the national anthem at one place, at one time, to create a new world record. Currently, Pakistan holds the world record of 42,813 people singing the national anthem in a group, a record the Sahara employees hope to break with 1,01,000 coming together to sing at 10am on May 6 in Lucknow. The event is not restricted only to Sahara employees; an open invite has been issued, encouraging citizens to sing the anthem wherever they are — at home with family, in office with colleagues, or in college and school with classmates. All one has to do is sing the anthem while standing at attention, capture it on video and upload the same onto YouTube with the description “Bharat Bhawna Divas”. Photos can also be

Several student and corporate organisations have registered for the event, apart from regiments of the Indian Army across seven states planning to participate. Several cameras will be installed at prominent places to record the event and the videos will be uploaded on YouTube immediately. Similar initiatives have been taken up by educational and event management organisations. Neo Rosary High School in Salarjung Colony has sent invites to its students, staff and guests to sing the national anthem together on its premises. One such group of 10 IT professionals, called the ‘Proud Hyderabadi’, has been managing some of the major traffic junctions in most places. “Every Saturday and Sunday, we try to do our bit by managing the traffic. We realise that there cannot be traffic police everywhere, so we volunteer to control traffic in areas like Nampally, Himayatnagar and Lower Tankbund,” says Ravi

Kiran, one of the members of the group. Traffic police, relieved by this act, feel more youth should come forward. “Many times, young people approach us, volunteering to help, but after a few days, they discontinue. It will be a great help for us too if youngsters come forward to bring road safety awareness and also help control the traffic,” says the commissioner.

Without losing any time, the T-party chief announced that he would take on Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who threw him a challenge on Bayyaram iron ore mining issue. “I will show him what KCR can do to the Bayyaram mining project. When I told him that I would create an earthquake to achieve my aim, he challenged me to do so. Let us see,” he reportedly said while addressing a gathering of party leaders at party headquarters in Banjara Hills on Saturday. During the meeting, KCR and his party leaders decided to hold massive agitation for the cancellation of the State government orders allocating the Bayyaram mining project to Vizag steel plant. The agitations are being planned to be organ-

ised in Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts where the iron ore reserves are located. A formal meeting with the leaders of these three districts is expected to be held in the next couple of days to chalk out an agitation plan.

Excise dept slams woman bar ban rumours Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

D

eputy commissioner of prohibition and excise department of Hyderabad district MMA Farooqui rubbished the reports carried by various media organisations regarding ban on women’s entry into pubs after 10pm. “We are not mandated to do so. There are no restrictions on women’s entry into bars. Only persons below the legal age, 21, are prohibited,” he said. Farooqui has also clarified on the issue of banning exclu-

sive ladies’ nights. “As per AP Prohibition and Excise Act, 1968, soliciting of liquors in the form of public advertisements and free drinks to ladies are prohibited. The Act says that no drink should be served free of cost to anybody and no public advertisement should be given for organising ladies special nights. “We told bar owners to stop these practices and strictly follow the rules,” he added. The deputy commissioner held a meeting with bar owners on April 26 to ask them to stick to the rule book. He warned the

bar owners that they would book cases against them if violation of any rule was reported. Farooqui also said that despite his repeated requests, a section of media published wrong and baseless reports without taking any clarification from the excise department. Meanwhile, higher authorities of excise department have begun an informal probe to find out who rang up bars and spread the rumours. Rajesh Chopra, general manager of BJN Group, told Postnoon that at the excise commissioner’s meeting last month,

the commissioner had asked the bars and pubs not to solicit women for free drinks and also stop all women night. This, the official said, was tantamount to advertising or enticing people to drink more. But Rajesh points out this kind of restriction selectively used against bars and pubs would prove discriminatory as star hotels keep their bars open for longer hours and such restrictions are not imposed on them. Rajesh said someone posing as excise department called up his managers and said women were not to be in bars

after 10pm. But the police had not attempted to harass the bars, he added. However, D Venkateswara Rao, president of the twin cities wine merchants’ association, said the commissioner had indeed said so but no written directive was passed. He said he agreed with the contention that enticing people to drink more pulled more crowds and policing became difficult if it continued. He did not agree with the suggestion that the bars and pubs suffered business loss if the practice of all women nights are discontinued.

Not our doing, say cops It’s a free country, says top cop of Hyderabad. Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com

T

he Hyderabad city police commissioner Anurag Sharma (in pic) has trashed the report that police had begun raiding bars and pubs to ensure no women stay after 10pm. “How can we do this?” Sharma countered. “You find out who spread this canard. It is a free country. Unless government and court impose legitimate restrictions, police will not step in.” The whole situation was the product of some officials calling up a few leading bars and pubs in Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills and Madhapur, and stating that such a feat was on the way. Adding strength to the threat, some cops appeared in more than one bar and ‘reconnoitred’ giving heebie-jeebies to the bar owners.

Elsewhere in the country... B

JP appears to have used one last weapon to win the May 5 Assembly elections. The party assured that it would give permission to hotels and pubs to remain open even after midnight. The party said that if returned to power, it would ensure that bars and restaurants in Bengaluru would remain open till 1am. Currently, bars are closed at 11.30 pm. As Bengaluru has emerged as the IT hub of the country, there has been demand to keep the bars and restaurants open well after midnight. There are 28 Assembly seats in Bengaluru. In 2008, BJP won 17. However, the party did not get good results in the local body elections. Now to attract the youth, the party gave the assurance about keeping the bars AGENCIES open.

landestine mischief played by some officials in the excise department or in the police corps threw up an embarrassing situation for the government last night. There sprung up in the middle of the night an ‘official warning’ from cops in some parts of the City saying the government has directed all pubs and bars to chuck women out after 10pm. Postnoon’s investigation proved it all false. First there is no such directive except the standing excise guidelines to retail sellers and bars not to solicit customers to drink. The time part and the gender bias were all mischief. This all points to an unpleasant situation. The fact remains that a police officer

or an excise official can tinker with businesses of bars and pubs, which are all licenced outlets. That the top police officers and excise officials have denied any such effort is a pointer to the fact that vested interests in uniform or in excise play nocturnal games with legitimate business establishments. That they quote crimes

POSTNOON VIEW against women in extenuation to curb women’s bar hours points to the sickening psyche of some selfish officials and some mediapersons’ penchant to pick up rumours and float them as news. t is surprising as to why the UIDAI and State authorities have not taken the project seriously, on par with voter enrolment. Unfortunately, my enrolment, at one of the centres in Rajendranagar of Ranga Reddy as early as January 2012, was one among those whose data has been lost. After a lot of waiting and browsing UIDAI website for the result, I was forced to enrol once again in April 2013 at another centre at Bandlaguda. My experience at the centres was quite unhappy for the reasons that a) Aadhar forms were not readily available at

the designated centres and had to be purchased from Xerox centres at far-off places. b) The number of computers provided are not adequate for the number of households of the villages attached to the centre. c) Queues were not properly managed and it was a free for all situation and the latecomers pushed senior citizens and womenfolk aside and forcibly managed enrolment. d) When I saw forms from my fellow men, I found lots of discrepancies but no one bothered about them and enrolled, which led to inaccuracy. e) Even when bank account number

and IFSC code is mentioned in the enrolment form, the computer operator didn’t enter it and the information is kept blank. I am dismayed with the manner in which the entire project is treated and left in the hands of private agencies, without supervision by a dedicated State government employee at the Aadhaar centre level.

Rathi, the nursing graduate from New Delhi who became the victim of an acid attack here four days ago, continues to be critical, her father said Sunday. “She continues to remain in the ICU. There is no improvement in her condition so far,” said a worried Amar Singh Rathi, her father, who is camping in Mumbai’s Masina Hospital, Byculla, to take care of his 25-year-old daughter. Rathi and Preeti had arrived Mumbai last Thursday on their first-ever visit to the “city of dreams”, which turned into a nightmare after an unknown youth hurled acid on her face shortly after they deboarded the Garib Rath from New Delhi at Bandra Terminus. She had come to take up a new

EDITORIALS HOW ABOUT making days of nights? The unrelenting heat is making life near impossible during the day, during which even thoughts of forays into the open are dreaded. The heat in Hyderabad is of a peculiar sort: when inside, it drains you of your fluids in sweat. The feeling is an awful one, stuffy and sticky. And when outside it just heats one up, as if you were wrapped in a foil of aluminium and placed near a stove. And thanks to our wonderful town planners we do not have trees on footpaths and other public places to shelter and take cover from the now very, very angry “eye of heaven”. The presence of trees about us would have taken care of more than mere cover. It would have presented us with those occasional showers during summers, because through photosynthesis, trees raise the water vapour content in the atmosphere raising chances of rain. Before we rue the changes brought in by global warming, let’s take India’s case. We have got worrying reports how about one fourth of India is undergoing ‘desertification’ currently. Please do not take solace in that fact that the process is a slow one: slow it is, but it will certainly wipe out greenery, leaving vast swathes of sand. And it is not at all comforting to note that we are not alone in this. Australia and the US were the countries recently in news for killer wildfires, and experts have forewarned that more’s to come in future. And what shall we do if we cannot go out during the day? How about going nocturnal in summers and sleeping during the day?

ORIENTATION matters not in sport At least eight professional footballers have revealed to colleagues that they are gay, but have refused to go public because they fear a backlash from fans, reports the Observer. This is a sad state of affairs because along with the weight of the responsibility of their game, players will have to constantly guard themselves against being found out. And this does not go along with the spirit of sport, whatever discipline it may be. Fans should be supportive to players, whatever their oreintation is.

Jaya Prada is being faithful to her roots From the hip

SYED SHOAIB

S

peculation is rife that actress-politician Jayaprada, currently a member of Lok Sabha from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, is planning to come back to her home state Andhra Pradesh and join the Congress party. Following her meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi last week, the actress is reported to have expressed her desire to contest the next Lok Sabha elections from her hometown Rajahmundry. Two-time Congress MP from Rajahmundry Vundavalli Arun Kumar is too glad to make way for Jayaprada. With the glamorous lady moving towards Congress, it is learnt that YSRC was trying to woo Ali, another film personality, who also hails from Rajahmundry. In 2009 election, two film personalities — M Murali Mohan from Telugu Desam Party and U Krishnam Raju from Praja Rajyam Party — also contested from the seat. The dancer who earlier campaigned with the slogan, “Andhra is my ‘janambhoomi’ but Uttar Pradesh is my ‘karmbhoomi’," will have to now address Andhra as one ‘bhoomi’. Today’s youth star Siddharth is her sister’s son, for whom she wrote and directed, ‘Class Medal’, a Telugu film produced by her brother Rajababu. The yesteryear actress, addressed as “the most beautiful face on the Indian screen," by Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray, had an early life in filmdom, which could have hardened her to the harsh realities of politics, particularly the turncoat variety. When director K Balachander slapped her costar Kamal Hassan in front of her for muffing up a scene, little Jaya had got scared and ran away from the set crying, only to return with her father’s cajole. Personal life has not been too rosy for the star either who, at one time was paid on par with Sridevi, Rekha and Parveen Babi. When she met her husband film producer Srikant Nahata as a friend, he was already a married man with children. It turned into love as he stood by her during her income tax problems. She was branded the “other woman”, especially since Nahata wouldn’t leave his wife. So she ended up marrying him in 1986, and

Nahata continues to be married to both women. Jayaprada has expressed a desire to have children, though in vain. For a lady associated with social and humanitarian causes, particularly with women and children, the only autograph she has taken till date is of Mother Teresa. She has acted in over 300 films and in seven languages. When I met her at the shoot of Kannada film Shabdavedi at Kanteerava Studios in Bangalore along with late actor Raj Kumar in 2000, she was grace personified and looked truly beautiful with her long tresses. Her quote, “Love is not about power but about acceptance,” seemed a heartfelt expression as she posed affectionately with her umpteen

fans, mostly men from the lower economic strata. Jayaprada was born as Lalita Rani in a middleclass household to Krishna and Neelavani in Rajahmundry on April 3, 1962. She was a small town girl with dreams of becoming a doctor. Her mother enrolled her in dance and music classes when she was seven, in addition to regular school. Although, her father and uncle were film financiers, her first break into films came through a school dance performance at age fourteen. Character actor Prabhakar Reddy gave her the name Jayaprada and introduced her in a three-minute song in the Telugu film, Bhoomi Kosam (1976). That immediately led her

to longer roles in Devude Digivaste (1975) and Naaku Swatantram Vachindhi (1976). The floodgates opened thereon. She plunged into politics in 1994 when she joined Telugu Desam Party. After joining Samajwadi Party, she contested from Rampur Lok Sabha in 2004 and retained the same in 2009. After she came out in open support of Amar Singh, the former general secretary of Samajwadi Party, she was expelled from the SP on February 2, 2010. On her 51st birthday celebrations at Tirupati last month, which let to controversy because of cake cutting on holy premises, Jayaprada has vowed to join a party with secular credentials. Let’s wait and watch.

WTO to pick new leader, amid talks deadlock

The WTO is set to have its first full-term leader from an developing country, after the candidates of Brazil and Mexico made the final round. Jonathan Fowler Agence France-Presse

T

he World Trade Organisation is close to choosing its next leader in a final round pitting Brazil against Mexico, with the winner facing the tough task of restoring the clout of global commerce’s rule-setting body. Brazil’s WTO ambassador Roberto Azevedo and his rival Herminio Blanco, Mexico’s former trade minister, are expected to learn as early as Tuesday whether they have won a contest that is seen as too close to call. All concerned are keenly aware that the successor to twoterm director general Pascal Lamy from France must act fast to revive the WTO’s moribund global trade talks. Both men have pitched a similar vision for a negotiating process which they say needs overhauling. “The multilateral trading system is weakened by a complete paralysis in the negotiations," Azevedo told AFP, explaining it was time to “unclog the system". Blanco, meanwhile, said it was time to reboot the 159-nation WTO. “The main challenge is the ‘W’ in ‘WTO'," he told AFP, underlining that the logjam had pushed members into negotiating bilateral and regional deals. “You have to transfer this energy back to Geneva," where the WTO is based, to prove the point and reach of the organisation, he said. Supporters of a WTO-wide deal warn that other accords can create a “spaghetti bowl” of conflicting rules, thereby failing to serve global commerce. Created in 1995, the WTO aims to spur growth by opening markets and removing trade barriers, including subsidies, excessive taxes and regulations. The stated goal of its “Doha Round", launched at a summit in Qatar in 2001, is to deploy trade to develop poorer economies. But members repeatedly have

A combination of pictures shows Brazil’s ambassador to the WTO, Roberto Azevedo (right) and Mexican economist and former minister Herminio Blanco, who are the two final candidates to lead the World Trade Organisation. AFP clashed over the give and take needed to reach a deal, with deep splits notably between China, the EU, India and the US. Some have blamed Lamy, a former EU trade chief, who raised hackles with an alleged name-and-shame drive to break the deadlock after he won a second term in 2009. Amid fears that December’s WTO summit in Bali could fail, the new director general will have to act fast after taking over on September 1. “The new DG obviously will come in at a rather precarious time for the WTO," said Sergio Marchi, Canada’s former trade minister and ex-WTO ambassador. Besides working the diplomatic circuit, Marchi told AFP, the new leader must repair ties with the business community — the hub of global commerce. “The business community has taken the view, ‘Call me when you’re serious'... Obviously getting Doha together is a challenge, but if the institution is seen as irrelevant, it is irrelevant," he said. “You don’t have to have an agreement in your first six months, but there’s got to be movement and momentum." Against that background, Blanco seems to have the advantage. The 62-year-old economist was Mexico’s negotiator for the 1994 North American Free Trade

Agreement and has solid private sector credentials, running an international trade consultancy and sitting on US, Asia and European company boards. “My candidacy is a package of skills, experience, ambition and creativity," he said. But Azevedo’s insider status could be key. The 55-year-old career diplomat was Brazil’s chief litigator in a raft of WTO disputes before becoming ambassador in 2008.

ALL CONCERNED ARE KEENLY AWARE THAT THE SUCCESSOR TO PASCAL LAMY MUST ACT FAST TO REVIVE THE WTO’S MORIBUND GLOBAL TRADE TALKS. “In the WTO today, you don’t have any low-hanging fruit. You have to go up the tree, grab the fruit and bring it down. And if you don’t know the system, and don’t know the trees, you’re not going to get the fruit," he said. Marchi underlined the symbolism of a Latin American WTO leader. “It’s the emerging economies that are now the economic locomotive globally, and both Brazil and Mexico have

done tremendously well thanks to trade," he said. The WTO’s leader is not formally elected, but picked by consensus, with senior diplomats sounding out the member states to see who has most support. The rules were set after an ugly 1999 race which led to New Zealand and Thailand splitting the job, before Lamy won in 2005. The WTO’s two previous chiefs were Irish and Italian, and with France following Thailand, developing nations have been keen to claim the top post. An unprecedented nine candidates ran this time around. Those who fell at the first fence in mid-April were from Kenya, Ghana, Jordan and Costa Rica, while Indonesia, South Korea and New Zealand stumbled at the end of the month. Both Azevedo and Blanco underline their broad support from rich, emerging and poor nations. But a range of diplomats told AFP they were unhappy with a final choice between two Latin Americans, while Kenya and South Korea raised concerns at WTO meetings. Kenya’s WTO ambassador Anthony Andanje told AFP, however, that it was a matter of making the disquiet known, rather than aiming to block the process.

‘Public services fail the needy’ NEW DELHI: Public services such as clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and schooling in many Asian countries, particularly in South Asia, are failing frequently to reach the needy, widening the region’s already sharp disparity between the rich and the poor, says a new Asian Development Bank (ADB) study. The delivery and quality of public services have lagged the meteoric growth rates seen in many economies in the region, it says, examining the challenges state providers face in delivering quality basic services to low income groups, and the potential for giving disadvantaged communities more power over service delivery. In South Asia, for example, access to primary schooling has grown substantially over the past decade, but there is no evidence of improved access to public health services, and there is very little progress in the provision of improved sanitation and water sources. Turning the present situation around will require state institutions to be far more responsive to demands for services and much more focussed on targeting support for those genuinely in need. Creative solutions must be explored, such as contracting out the delivery of some public services to private parties and nongovernment organizations, broader adoption of new communications technologies, and a possible shift to a cash-based social assistance transfer system. The study says improvements are surely needed to avoid further widening of the rich-poor divide. IANS

Israel attacks Damascus research centre

The attack is Israel’s second this week against Syria; earlier, a weapons shipment to Hezbollah was destroyed. DAMASCUS: Israel carried out a rocket attack on the Jamraya scientific research centre in Damascus overnight, the official Syrian news agency SANA reported Sunday. The agency did not say whether there were any wounded or dead. The “Israeli attack aims at loosening the noose around the terrorists in the eastern Ghouta” region, near Damascus, Syrian television added. There was no immediate comment from the White House in Washington on the reported attack.

Reports of massacre

A

ccording to Syrian opposition activists, these killings happened in the coastal city of Banias, a Sunni family gunned down in the midst of the Alawite heartland, the Shia minority sect largely loyal to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Although the pictures could not immediately be verified, video and other pictures appeared to confirm reports of whole families being killed in two massacres by a pro-government militia in the past two days, prompting thousands to attempt to flee the area.

If confirmed, the attack would be Israel’s second this week against Syria. US media reports say Israel targeted a weapons shipment to the militant group Hezbollah in neighbouring Lebanon overnight Thursday to Friday, but the Jewish state has refused to confirm or deny the bombing. A diplomatic source in Lebanon told AFP the operation destroyed surface-to-air missiles recently delivered by Russia that were being stored at Damascus airport. Israel implicitly confirmed it staged an air strike on Syria in late January as President Bashar al-Assad accused the Jewish state of trying to further destabilise his war-torn country. That air strike targeted surface-to-air missiles and an adjacent military complex believed to house chemical agents, a US official said at the time. Damascus threatened to retaliate, further fuelling fears of a regional spillover of a civil war the UN says has left at least 70,000 people dead since March 2011. Activists, meanwhile, said the bodies of 62 civilians, including children, were found in the northwest port of Banias a day after an assault by regime troops and the opposition Syrian National Coalition warned against what it called “ethnic cleansing”. CNN said US and Western intelligence agencies were

Washington does not believe Israeli warplanes entered Syrian airspace during the raid, it added. US President Barack Obama, speaking to Spanish-language Telemundo television, said Israel was justified in protecting itself against arms shipments to Hezbollah. “The Israelis justifiably have to guard against the transfer of advanced weaponry to terrorist organisations like Hezbollah,” he said, without commenting directly on last week’s reported strike.

“We coordinate closely with the Israelis, recognising that they are very close to Syria, they are very close to Lebanon.” Lebanon’s military said pairs of Israeli aircraft entered their airspace three times on Thursday night and stayed for two to three hours at a time. NBC cited US officials as saying the primary target was believed to be a weapons shipment headed for Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite group closely allied with President Bashar alAssad’s regime. One said the raid was probably tied to delivery systems for chemical weapons, but

he Lebanese Hezbollah’s political council has said the group stands ready to engage in the fight to prevent Syria’s collapse as well as being controlled by Israel and the US. Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyed, head of the council, said the reason behind being involved in the Syrian crisis was that “we do not accept Syria being under control of this (Israeli-US) axis”, Xinhua reported. He said he wishes Israel and the US let the Syrians alone to decide their fate and future.

CNN cited officials as saying there was no reason to believe Israel had struck chemical weapons storage facilities. A Syrian military source denied the raid had taken place at all, and an Israeli defence official would say only the Jewish state “was following the situation in Syria and Lebanon, with an emphasis on transferring chemical weapons and special arms”. But a diplomatic source in Lebanon told AFP the operation destroyed surface-to-air missiles delivered by Russia that were being stored at Damascus airport. AFP

British MP ‘arrested over gay rape claim’

Maduro blasts ‘devil’ Obama

KABUL: Seven US service members were killed on

LONDON: - A deputy speaker of Britain’s lower house of parliament was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of raping one man and sexually assaulting another, according to media reports. Media said Nigel Evans, a lawmaker in Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party, was questioned over alleged attacks on two men in their twenties. Evans, 55, represents Ribble Valley in Lancashire, northwest England, and is one of the House of Commons’ three deputy speakers. Lancashire Police said in a statement: “A 55-year-old man from Pendleton in Lancashire has today, Saturday, May 4 2013, been arrested by Lancashire Constabulary on suspicion of rape and sexual assault.” A spokeswoman for the force later said the suspect had been released on bail until June 19.

CARACAS: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro took a swipe at Barack Obama on Saturday, calling him the “grand chief of devils” after the US president declined to recognize his contested re-election. “Coming out of Central America, Obama let loose with a bunch of impertinent remarks, insolent stuff... He is giving an order, and his blessing, for the fascist right wing to attack Venezuela’s democracy,” Maduro alleged in an address. But “we are here defending our institutions, peace, democracy, the people of Venezuela... and we can sit down with anyone, even the grand chief of devils: Obama,” Maduro said. The socialist’s harsh attack recalled diatribes from his predecessor the late Hugo Chavez aimed at former US president George W Bush.

Saturday in one of the deadliest days for Americans in Afghanistan in recent months and the latest of attacks against international troops since the Taliban announced the start of their spring offensive, reported the Guardian. The renewed violence came as Afghan president Hamid Karzai acknowledged at a news conference that regular payments his government has received from CIA for more than a decade would continue. Karzai also said that talks on a US-Afghan bilateral security agreement to govern future American military presence in the country had been delayed because of conditions the Afghans were placing on the deal.

Championing animal rights Thanks to Vasanthi Vadi’s intervention, many animals live a more secure life. The secretary of People for Animals talks about her passion for animals, her journey and the NGO. WHEN WE HAD STARTED, THERE WAS A HUGE VACUUM; PEOPLE AND COPS WERE BLISSFULLY UNAWARE ABOUT ANIMAL RIGHTS. WHEN WE WENT TO THE COPS AND SPOKE ABOUT THE PCA ACT, THEY ASKED IF IT WAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH CORRUPTION. manner is a strict no-no. My husband and I have rescued many bears on the street during that time. People were unaware about the law and they had to be told about it. Some time ago, I received a call from Kakinada from a person who said that there are two bears on the street. Immediately, I contacted the local animal activists who in turn informed the cops in the area. Within a matter of a few hours, we rescued those two bears. Similarly, I got a call from a man complaining that his neighbours had cut down a huge tree and many nests bearing a lot of little birds were on the ground. We arranged for rescue operations, however, we could only save 50 per cent of these birds. Having said that, the fact remains that someone who saw this incident felt moved and decided to complain. I get around two or three calls each day from people informing about animal abuse cases. This means that many people are aware about animal rights and are prepared to stand up for these animals.

There was an incident of acid attack on a street dog a few days ago in the City. How do you react to this incident?

ith a bright red collar securely fastened around her neck, Mili looked every bit excited about my arrival at the People for Animals office at Begumpet. Wagging her tail continuously, she was at the doorstep, extending a warm welcome. “Mili has adopted us,” said secretary of People for Animals Vasanthi Vadi. Mili is not a “stray dog but a free dog”, as Vasanthi puts it. There are many animals like Mili whom Vasanthi Vadi has taken under her wing. Thanks to her intervention in their lives, they live a more secure life. In an interview with Postnoon, Vasanthi talks about her pas-

When did People For Animals come into effect? We started our first animal welfare organisation in 1990. It was then called Abhaya. Subsequently, in 1992, when Amala Akkineni moved from Chennai to Hyderabad, she got in touch with me as we both had a common friend, Chinni Krishna, in Chennai. We decided that we don’t need two animal organisations in the same city so we closed down Abhaya and joined Blue Cross, Hyderabad. During that time I came across Maneka Gandhi’s People for Animals. I was really inspired by her fighting spirit. She would go to any lengths to ensure the animal’s rights. There wasn’t a chapter of People for Animals in the City, so we decided to start a chapter here. PFA stands up for the rights of animals. So, as part of our work, we file cases, go to courts, counsel and face a lot of threats. At times, when we don’t get any proof to file a case, we threaten the suspected so that they don’t repeat the same incident. In this country, there are many who are scared of the cops and if a cop went around asking about the crime and about the suspects, there will surely be a change in the mindset and the public will certainly stop and think about the incident. We also conduct training classes for cops so that they know about animal rights since they are the ones who are working on the field. The basic idea is that we want people to respect animal rights.

Do you think there is a change in the scenario now compared to how it was ten years ago? When we had started, there was a huge vacuum; people and cops were blissfully unaware about animal rights. When we went to the cops and spoke about the PCA act, they asked if it was something about corruption. They had to be told that it is the Prevention of Cruelty Act. However, the State has undergone a tremendous change. Cops are aware about these laws today. Another area where there is change is in circuses, where one cannot take big animals anymore. There was a time when people freely took along bears in the City. Bears are actually a Schedule 1 animal, which means it is very highly endangered and dealing with this animal in any

I don’t believe in the word “stray”. I like to call them free dogs as the street is their home. Who are we to decide that they are stray? I was shocked when I got the call describing the incident. What business does anyone have to throw acid on and kill an animal? There are many such psychos in the City and when one comes across such incidents, you should make sure that you secure the body of the victim so that we will have the proof to fight the case in court. Just like any other crime, one needs the body and witnesses for the crime to be proved. Some time ago, we took to court an autorickshaw driver who dragged a dog to its death. He was issued three months of imprisonment. If you witness such crimes against animals, contact Vasanthi Vadi at 09849027601.

Understanding

the Essence Of Life

S BALAKRISHNA

Postnoon chats with Dega Deva Kumar Reddy, a man with a purpose of creating an understanding in the minds of the public through the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti. ALRIC QUINTIN

feedback@postnoon.com

K

umar Reddy is known for producing films about understanding the mind and being focused on the life ahead rather than losing focus on goals because of a mind full of worries and fears. His motivation: teachings of the world teacher, Jiddu Krishnamurti. Kumar Reddy’s upcoming film Essence Of Life gives the viewers a chance to understand how life can be interesting and peaceful through simple measures of song and dance. Here are the excerpts from our conversation: What is Essence Of Life and how is it going to change public view of cultural art? Essence of life is nothing but the understanding of the human mind and how it functions in the time of jeopardy. The human mind is basically the root cause of all the problems we face in modern times. Essence of Life gives a basic understanding to people to get over the problems they face through the basic elements of the human mind. Cultural art is something that can reach out to people as part of Indian culture, as song-anddance is one way of getting a better understanding of Jiddu Krishnamurti’s teachings. Who is Jiddu Krishnamurti and how have his teachings inspired you? Jiddu Krishnamurti was a

philosopher of the 20th century who spoke about various problems that we face in our daily life like fear, suffering, hatred, violence and death. His teachings have helped many to understand life better, and change and improve their lives. I follow the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti in my daily life; his teachings have inspired me and have helped me get through many obstacles. Since I became inspired by his teachings I have chosen to share it in the form of art cinema. Do you think the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti and your trying to propagate them through art cinema will bring about a change? Fundamentally, the human mind usually thinks, “If the other person does not change then why should I?” The first objective of a human being is to change himself first and then consider the change in someone else. The teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti need to be thoroughly understood. His teachings can inspire us and also bring about changes in the society we live. So basically his teachings improve the structure of the human mind and the potential to carry yourself over hurdles and attain victory over any emotion that causes corruption of the human mind. What do you expect from the Essence Of Life and how are you working towards its success? Essence Of Life is something I loved doing and it is also widely based on the main teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti. According to Jiddu Krishnamurti (and this is something I follow too), the

I follow the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti in my daily life; his teachings have inspired me and have helped me get through many obstacles. work that we do should be something that we love and are interested in; only then it will attain fruition. I am happy with the work I did and I love spreading the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti, as it can actually create peace in a confused mind and through my work I hope to present his teachings. I am not working for its success because this is something I love doing and success will automatically follow with the amount of work put in this. Essence of Life is a revolution in music and dance inspired by Jiddu Krishnamurti's teachings. Lamakaan Time: May 11,7.30 onwards

The insecticide and two more of the same kind were banned for two years from use on some crops across the European Union, due to the risk posed to bees and other pollinators, on which many food crops rely.

major row has broken out between green campaigners and companies using wood, straw, waste and other “biomass” fuels to run power stations over how environmentally friendly such fuels are.The Renewable Energy Association accused some of the UK’s biggest green NGOs of scaremongering over their vocal opposition to the use of biomass in generating energy.

Flies become models for robotic insects in US Coin-sized robots developed in the US could, in the future, be helpful in rescue work or even help pollinate crops. But until the prototypes are completed they will be on a leash.

U

S scientists have devised tiny winged robots inspired by flies that could one day help pollinate crops or aid the search for survivors at collapse sites — once they get off the leash, that is. The prototypes by researchers at Harvard University weigh 80 milligrams and have managed short controlled flights by flapping their mechanical wings while still tethered to a tiny power cable, the journal Science said this week. The coin-sized robots sport two thin wings that flap 120 times per second. Flight tests have shown they can make basic manoeuvres, including hovering in place for about 20 seconds before crashing. Experts are studying realworld flies for clues on how to improve the robots. “Flies perform some of the

most amazing aerobatics in nature using only tiny brains," said Sawyer Fuller, a postdoctoral researcher and study coauthor. “Their capabilities exceed what we can do with our robot, so we would like to understand their biology better and apply it to our own work." The process of getting the robots to fly has taken 12 years, said Robert Wood, principal investigator and professor at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “It’s really only because of this lab’s recent breakthroughs in manufacturing, materials, and design that we have even been able to try this. And it just worked, spectacularly well." The power cable has to stay on until solutions can be found for a portable high energy-density fuel cell that is strong enough and light enough to sustain independent flight, AFP researchers said.

Bug-eye camera offers a new view of the world

aking their cue from Nature, engineers have built a camera using stretchable electronics that scans the world like a fly’s compound eye — with a wide field of view and no distortion, they said Wednesday. The digital device, which has a multitude of tiny, pliable lenses like those found in ant, beetle, and lobster eyes, also allows for a near-infinite depth of field and high motion sensitivity, the team wrote in the journal Nature. “We’ve figured out ways to make cameras that incorporate all of the essential design features of eyes found in the insect world," study co-author John Rogers of the University of Illinois’ engineering department told AFP. “The result is a new type of camera that offers exceptionally wide-angle fields of view (nearly 180 degrees) with zero aberrations and uniform illumination intensity." Most classical cameras mimic the working of the animal eye: light reflected off an object passes through the lens which bends and focuses the light onto the retina at the back of the organ, where nerve cells convert it into electric impulses sent to the brain, which produces an image. These single-lens systems have a limited field of view, but insects and other species with eyes composed of multiple units called ommatidia enjoy panoramic vision. “Nature has developed and refined these concepts over the course of billions of years of evolution," said Rogers. Conventional single, wideangle camera lenses, like fisheye lenses, distort images on the periphery because of a mismatch between the light entering through a bent lens

surface only to be captured on a flat detector. Most electronics used in detectors are made of a brittle silicon which cannot be bent. For their camera, the team created stretchable electronics to build a detector that can be curved into the same hemispherical shape as the lens — eliminating distortion. The camera, about 1.5 centimetres (0.6 inches) in diameter, has 180 miniature lenses, each with its own detector — similar to the number found in fire ant and bark beetle eyes. Dragonflies have about 28,000 lenses and worker ants about 100. The electronics and lenses are both flat when manufactured — allowing them to be made with existing methods. “This is the key to our technology," co-author Jianliang Xiao, electrical engineering assistant professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder, said in a statement. “We can fabricate an electronic system that is compatible with current technology. Then we can scale it up." The technology could be useful in surveillance cameras or endoscope imaging, said Rogers. But commercialisation is some way off, as a useful camera would likely need millions of lens-detector combination units — requiring much investment into manufacturAFP ing capacity.

trained. Each waiter is deputed a table. When you book a table for 9pm, and are made to wait till 9.30pm, it is annoying. On top of that, if they are rude, it is just not okay,”says Ajuli Tulsyan, publisher & editor-inchief, Elan magazine. For many reasons, patrons have no qualms about making a scene and scolding the waiter or manager. “I don’t like to do that. If I have a problem, I call the manager and tell him what I liked about the place and then place my problem,” says Ajuli. What many restaurant owners and managers don’t understand is honesty and transparency with customers can take them a long way. “It builds trust. If you don’t have fresh food to serve, don’t serve. Tell them the truth, make them wait, it’s okay.

If you have had a bad experience at a restaurant, what do you do? While some decide to pay and leave quietly knowing they would not go back there, others make it a point to give honest feedback to the management. In some cases it can help the restaurant improve, for others it is just depressing. KANCHAN AGARWAL

omplaining of bad service is acceptable but commenting on the food can at times be unreasonable. Executive chef of Radisson Blu Plaza Swami Nandan says, “As a customer, you have a right to judge the food because you are paying for it. But the customer doesn’t realise it is not just a job for us. It is more of a passion. To give feedback, you have to know the product in and out. Out of 10 parameters, if eight are right and two are wrong, they are influenced by the wrong and mark all 10 negative. There is nothing called 100% satisfaction but we try to meet the customer’s idea of how a dish should taste and alter our cooking.” As paying customers of a restaurant or a movie, the public insensitively judges the outcome without considering the hard work behind it. “We put our heart and soul in it. Receiving destructive feedback from someone who knows only so much

about food makes us absolutely low. Being in hospitality, we understand it as part of the business though,” says chef Swami. As unreasonable as it is to instruct a professional chef how to cook, expecting the dish you ordered is not much to ask for. And insisting that the customer is wrong is just not done. “They mess up items as simple as juice. A waiter once got me orange juice when I had asked for

A folly is pardonable if it is immediately put to correction. “If I am served undercooked food, I expect it to be replaced, at least in fine dining,” says Mallik. Even small things like bringing and bill without delay count. “When they can’t manage traffic, it is irritating because they are

Fast serving is not necessarily fresh serving. One of my customers once found a cockroach in his food. Instead of making a scene, he came inside the kitchen to tell me. He did that because he knew we are honest about our quality. Honesty generates good mouth publicity no matter how awkward it is,” says independent chef Narayana Rao. There are many ways to oblige bad feedback and make up for bad service. When a lady complained her pigeon was undercooked, a chef with 22 years of experience said “It is not possible. If you don’t like my style, I don’t want your business.” Some restaurants offer complementary desserts. “I don’t want that. All I want is value for my money,” says Mallik. If the waiter has been rude to you, you might not want to yell back at him or tip him either. “I would rather tip the doorman,” says Ajuli.

n this day and age, when teasers are better than the movie, Taj Vivanta’s Tease does not disappoint. The bar is both a good ‘tease’ and a great experience. While the bar does get its fair share of couples looking for a romantic evening, it is more of a casual place to hang out with friends. Whether it’s downing shooters at the compact bar or dancing to foot-tapping numbers, the bar is best enjoyed in a big group. Even the seating arrangement at Tease suggest as much. The bar gets most things right with its ambience — the lighting, décor and music make the perfect recipe for an enjoyable evening. Even when it comes to offers, Tease trumps all. Apart from the regular single malts and whiskeys, Tease is famous for its signature drinks. Among the Teasers or cocktails on the beverage menu, the Amazing Sage (green apple, sour mix,

However, your visit to Tease will be complete only with its Local Favourites like the Gongura Mojito (gongura leaves used instead of mint leaves) and the Golconda Chai (Irani chai decoction shaken with lime and Smirnoff). Coming to the bites that will only enhance your outing further, Tease does a great job with ‘Teasettizers’ like the Killer Cheese Loaded Fries, Sauteed Lamb Meat Balls and Nizami Indian Flavours. MUTTON CHOPS TO DIE FOR! Place: Golden Palace Location: Near vegetable market, Gudimalkpur, Mehdipatnam Tel: 9291455604

O

f my many favourite finds in the City, I must mention the mutton chops at Golden Palace. A friend of mine took me there and I went with no

expectations. Well, I expected a little. When he said mutton chops, I thought of the wellknown Bengali-style mutton chops I have often eaten during Durga Puja. For all the hype my friend created, a plate full of flat, rectangular mutton chops was served.

Boy, was I delighted with the quantity, and to know it costs only `180! Once we started eating, we could not stop. There was no reason to. They were crisp and melting at turns. The chutney that came with it, which I understand makes a grand difference to your snacks, was just so right. And what snack is complete without onions sprinkled with spice?

The next course was a delicious plate of creamy mutton curry served with soft butter naans. This oh-soHyderabadi combination was such a treat to my Mughlai senses. As we started digging into this scrumptious feast, not a word was spoken at the table till all of our plates were licked clean. Something else that you must try at Golden Palace is the biryani. I love my biryani full of flavour. That’s just how rich the biryani here is. It doesn’t even make you feel too heavy. That was a memorable and hearty meal. I suggest you visit this little snack shack soon.

First look of Anamika unveiled

S

elvaraghavan has finally revealed the first look of his upcoming film Irandam Ulagam and it’s quite obvious why he’s so excited about the film. The film has Anushka and Arya in lead roles and it’s said to be the first Indian film to be extensively shot in Georgia. Few months ago, Selvaraghavan had posted on Twitter saying, “Irandam Ulagam is not an easy film to make. Its the toughest script to be converted on celluloid.. done my best. This is the only script I personally wanted to see on the screen. Bcos so many people told me its impossible to convert. They told me to write it as a novel. Now we r almost done. will come to your judgement in a few months. im really excited.thrilled (sic).” The first look of the film looks every bit of the grandeur which Selvaraghavan had been promising all these days. The film’s Telugu version has been titled as Varna. Buzz is that the film has been made with a whopping budget of `55 crore and Anushka is playing dual roles. After Arundhati, this is the biggest project in Anushka’s career where the onus is on her shoulders. Although the film’s story has been kept under wraps, the posters certainly raise the curiosity factor on what Selvaraghavan and Anushka have in store for the audience this time. The film’s principal shooting has been wrapped up and the audio might hit the stands in mid-June. The film has been produced by PVP Cinemas and it might hit the screens in the latter half of August. Harris Jayaraj has scored the music and Ramji is the cinematographer. After Yugaaniki Okkadu, this could very well be the biggest visual extravaganza in Selvaraghavan’s career.

Directed by Kishore Pardasany, the film is the Telugu remake of Lingusamy’s Vettai. Naga Chaitanya is playing a rough and tough guy, who inspires his elder brother, played by Sunil, to fight back against the criminals. Sunil is playing the role of a police officer, whereas Tamannaah and Andrea Jeremiah will be seen as silblings. Bellamkonda Suresh,

who produced the film, is extremely confident of the film and at the film’s audio launch, he went to the extent of saying that Naga Chaitanya’s fans can pick up a fight with him, if they don’t like the film. After watching the film, Nagarjuna told the media, “I am highly impressed with the film. Naga Chaitanya and Sunil have done extremely well.” Although the film’s music was released couple of weeks ago, the makers are confident about the pre-release buzz and the promotional campaign has already begun in a big way.

he first look of Nayanthara’s upcoming film Anamika was unveiled recently and it’s not without spoilers. The film is the official remake of Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani, which was a critical and commercial success last year. In Anamika, Nayanthara plays the role of a distressed woman who comes to Hyderabad in search of her husband. Unlike the original film, Nayanthara doesn’t seem to be playing the role of a pregnant woman in the Telugu version. Directed by Sekhar Kammula, the film’s principal shooting began recently in Hyderabad. Vaibhav Reddy is playing an important role in the film and more details about the cast and crew will be announced soon. Buzz is that the Sekhar Kammula has planned to wrap up the entire film’s shooting in 50 working days.

Gay or not gay? Mia, Cathy, Edward, David and John all decided to go for a walk in the jungle one day. Upon their stroll, they came across a pit of quick sand. It was way too long to jump over, and much too wide to go around. It had already taken them an hour to get this far, and none of them wanted to turn back. “What are we going to do?” asked Cathy.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “You can all walk across the quick sand without sinking, as long as you’re not gay.” So, first Mia went across, and she didn’t sink. Then Edward walked across, and he didn’t sink. Then Cathy walked across, and she didn’t sink. The three of them then looked back to find John’s neck deep in the quick sand. “John, you’re gay?” asked Mia.

Just as she finished her sentene, a genie appeared.

“No,” he stated “David is holding onto my pants!”

REGIONAL CINEMA SUNDAY, MAY 5, 2013

22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM (2012)

T Ethir Neechal

Small is the new big The summer of 2013 is turning out to be quite unusual for Tamil cinema. None of the top five stars have films lined up for release this summer and in turn, it’s the low budget films that are hogging all the limelight.

HEMANTH KUMAR

hemanth.k@postnoon.com

I

t’s an unusual summer for Tamil cinema and that all the top actors including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith, Suriya, Vikram haven’t had a single release in April comes as a big surprise. For that matter, there are no big films lined up for release in May. “This has never happened before. Films like Kochadaiyaan, Ajith’s upcoming film, Thalaivaa and Singham 2 were initially expected to release in summer; however, some of them are still under production,” Sreedhar Pillai, a leading film journalist and trade analyst, says. Apart from delay in production of big films, the lacklustre performance of some of the big ticket films in the past seems to have changed a lot of things in the industry. “Earlier, distributors used to flock to buy the rights of a big star’s film months before its release. However, that seems to be changing slowly. Today, there’s no guarantee that even a big star’s film will

ensure huge returns and since some of the recent films made on a reasonable budget, did well at the box-office, they have turned into a safe bet,” Sreedhar Pillai reveals. This trend has come as a blessing in disguise for low budget films and actors like Vijay Sethupathi, Siva Karthikeyan and Mirchi Shiva are slowly emerging as the flag bearers of the new wave in Tamil cinema. The advent of digital filmmaking has led to a sharp rise in the production of films and it’s not uncommon to find four to five films releasing on the same day in Tamil Nadu. Last year, a host of new directors

entered the film industry and films like Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi, Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Pizza grabbed a lot of attention. Interestingly, many of the new-age directors tasted their first success on small screen. “Few years ago, Kalaingnar TV began a show named Naalaya Iyakunar where several directors showcased their short films and some of the hit films in recent times were first screened as short films on that show before being adapted on big screen. Directors like Karthick Subburaj (Pizza), Arun Kumar (Pannaiyarum Padminiyum), Soodhu Kavvum

Bharathy Bala (Uthiri) and Nalan Kumarasamy (Soodhu Kavvum) are off-shoots from that TV show. Also the fact that big distribution houses are picking these low-budget flicks and giving them a wider release has given a lot of producers new hope,” Praveen KL, an editor reveals. Case in point being Studio Green distributing Vijay Sethupathi, Sanchita Shetty starrer Soodhu Kavvum and Dhanush producing Siva Karthikeyan, Priya Anand starrer Ethir Neechal. Both of the films, which released on May 1, are doing quite well at the boxoffice. “Anirudh’s music was a huge hit and Siva Karthikeyan is a household name because of his stint on TV. On top of that Dhanush producing the film was a huge factor in the Ethir Neechal’s success,” Priya Anand admits and adds, “People have always encouraged new ideas and there’s a lot of scope to experiment with new stories, genres that too in a non-commercial format in Tamil.” The next big Tamil film Dhanush, Parvathi Menon starrer Mariyaan isn’t going to release until June. Till then, the market is split wide open for low budget films to hog the limelight.

he film which made Rima Kallingal, one of the most talked about actresses in Malayalam cinema last year, 22 Female Kottayam is a hard hitting tale of a nurse who decides to take revenge for the injustice done to her. The film throws light on the plight of a rape victim and the trauma she goes through. Directed by Aashiq Abu, the film has Rima Kallingal, Fahadh Faasil, Prathap Pothen and Riya Saira in lead roles. Aashiq Abu and Rima Kallingal were nominated for numerous awards and the film did quite well at box-office.

Cinema must be as close to reality as possible. A director or artiste should always observe his neighbours, relatives and the society in general and find inspiration. K Vishwanath, director DID YOU KNOW ? Talking about onscreen jodis, Prem Nazir, one of the most popular Malayalam actors of all time, holds the record for being paired up with actress Sheela a record 107 times. On the whole, Prem Nazir acted with nearly 85 different heroines in his career.

A year before Dadasaheb Phalke made Raja Harishchandra, another Marathi filmmaker Dadasaheb Torne made a silent film titled Shree Pundalik. The film was 22 minutes long and its processing was completed in London before it could be screened in India. The film was screened in Bombay on May 18, 1912 and it ran for two weeks.

Noah leads Bulls into second round Noah scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

NEW YORK: Joakim Noah scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds Saturday to lead the injury-ravaged Chicago Bulls to a 99-93 victory over the Brooklyn Nets and into the second round of the NBA playoffs. Facing a do-or-die seventh game, Noah asserted himself in every facet of the contest — connecting on 12-of-17 shots from the field and also blocking six shots. The victory in the best-ofseven Eastern Conference firstround series earned the Bulls a second-round clash with reigning NBA champions Miami. Chicago were without forward Luol Deng, their regularseason scoring leader who spent part of Saturday in hospital in Chicago. Britain’s Deng had missed game six — which the Bulls lost in Chicago — when he came down with flu-like symptoms, then developed complications from a spinal tap that he had to rule out a possible case of meningitis. Chicago, which played all season without star Derrick Rose as he recovered from knee surgery, was also without guard Kirk Hinrich, still nursing a calf injury.

Floyd overpowers Guerrero LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: World Boxing Council champion Floyd Mayweather extended his perfect record to 44 victories Saturday, beating Robert Guerrero by unanimous decision in their welterweight title fight. Mayweather, who was defending his title for the first time since serving close to three months in jail last year after being convicted of domestic violence, dominated a bloodied Guerrero for the majority of the fight at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. streak dating back to 2005. While Mayweather improved to 44-0 with 26 knockouts, Guerrero fell to 31-2-1 with 18 wins inside

the distance. The fight started slowly, with Guerrero the aggressor and Mayweather feeling the challenger out. Mayweather began to seize control in the third round and dictated the pace from there, using his superior foot and hand speed to keep Guerrero off balance. Mayweather landed one of his hardest punches in the eighth round — a roundhouse right that wobbled Guerrero, whose face was starting to show the effects of being hit with a barrage of straight rights, stinging counterpunches and lunging jabs.

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA: Phil Mickelson and Nick Watney each stumbled with the lead on Saturday, leaving the US duo tied atop the leaderboard after three rounds at the US PGA Wells Fargo Championship. Mickelson took a double bogey at the par-5 15th and a bogey at 16 to hand Watney the lead, only to have Watney double bogey the par-3 17th and leave both even on eight-under 208 for 54 holes in the $6.7 million event at Quail Hollow. “I was grinding it out there even though I didn’t have my A game coming down the stretch,” said Mickelson, who fired a 73 while Watney settled for a 71. “I played poorly coming down the stretch and I’m lucky to be tied for the lead.” American George McNeill was third on 209 with England’s Lee Westwood and David Lynn, Sweden’s Robert Karlsson, Australian John Senden and Americans Ryan Moore and Derek Ernst another stroke off

World number two Rory McIlroy fired a 73 on his 24th birthday to stand on 211 with Americans D.A. Points, Kevin Streelman, Brian Harman and

Jason Kokrak. “I don’t think I was necessarily scraping it around,” McIlroy said. “From tee to green it was actually OK, but when I got on the greens it was

a problem. I just couldn’t hole anything. “When you miss a few putts on these greens, you sort of lose confidence in your stroke and then it’s just sort of hard to commit fully to what you want to do. If I want to hole some putts tomorrow, I need to do a better job of that.” McIlroy’s pals bought him a long-lasting portable phone battery while his girlfriend, tennis star Caroline Wosniacki, had some purchases of her own. “Got me this new bracelet and a couple pairs of shoes, a bag, sent me a birthday cake, actually I got that in my room today, so all good,” he said. “We were supposed to go for dinner and watch the (Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero) fight somewhere, but it might just be dinner and bed.” Watney knows he and Mickelson allowed a host of rivals back within reach on Sunday, when the threat of storms has prompted organizers to play in threesomes off two tees early in the morning to try and complete the round.

Kerr stood on 10-under 203 after 54 holes with compatriot Stacy Lewis and Norway’s Suzann Pettersen sharing second on 205, American Angela Stanford on 206 and South Korea’s Lee Il-Hee fifth on 207. Thai teen Ariya Jutanugarn, who led after the first two rounds, stum-

bled to a 73 on saturday but still shared sixth with American Lizette Salas on 208. Kerr took her lone bogey at the par-3 second hole but answered with birdies at the par-5 third and par-4 fourth holes. She also birdied the par-5 seventh and began the back nine with another birdie. Birdies at the par-3 13th and par-5 15th provided Kerr with her margin atop the leaderboard at the end of the day, as well as a boost to the mental game she said is important for her success.

Bravo to captain WI ST. JOHN’S, ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA: All-rounder Dwayne Bravo was Saturday named as West Indies captain for next month’s Champions Trophy, replacing Darren Sammy who stays in charge of the Test and Twenty20 squads. Bravo, who took over from Sammy for the three-match whitewash of Zimbabwe in the Caribbean this year, leads a 15man squad for the June 6-23 tournament in England.

“Our results in Tests and T20s have been showing consistent improvement and Sammy deserves every kudos for the work he has done in leading and moulding the team in these formats,” said Clyde Butts, chairman of the selection panel. “However our ODI results have not been as strong and we believe that it is best that we freshen the leadership of the team in this format. “Dwayne Bravo is an experienced, seasoned and senior cricketer who has demonstrated leadership qualities.” Bravo, 29, made his ODI debit in 2004 and has played 137 matches, scoring 2,311 runs and taking 160 wickets. His top score is 112 not out while 6-43 represents his best bowling return. Bravo said he was honoured to be appointed West Indies captain. “To be named captain of the West Indies is one of the highest honours and I am truly humbled to have been appointed to this most prestigious position.” Sammy congratulated Bravo and said he will give the new captain his full support. O’Sullivan sinks Trump, in final SHEFFIELD, UNITED KINGDOM: Ronnie O’Sullivan booked his place in the World Championship final for the fifth time as the defending champion cruised to a 17-11 victory over Judd Trump in the semi-finals on Saturday. O’Sullivan will take on fellow Englishman Barry Hawkins in the final after the latest in a long line of dominant displays at the Crucible Theatre in the northern English city of Sheffield. The four-time champion held

a 14-10 overnight lead and he never looked likely to surrender that advantage as he clinched the three frames needed to progress to the final. After almost a year out of snooker, reaching another Crucible final must ranks among O’Sullivan’s finest achievements. But the English star has already claimed this will be his last appearance at the World Championship due to a lack of passion for the game and that would be a relief to his rivals, who have once again failed to

step up to his level. However, despite an apparently comfortable victory margin, O’Sullivan said he had had to endure several moments of unease. “It doesn’t seem like you’re being pushed, but there are times out there where you’re that close to cracking,” he said. “Then something will happen and you’ll pull ahead and that’ll give you belief and confidence, but in every match there has been a point where I’ve felt, ‘This could be slipping, this AFP could be cracking.’”

‘Volume of cricket played these days is outrageous’

P

une Warriors chief coach Allan Donald feels that the volume of cricket being played nowadays is "absolutely outrageous" which, in turn, reduces the time span of a cricketer. "Look at the volume of cricket that is being play these days, it's absolutely outrageous. We simply know from the South African point of view that we can't afford to play Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in all three formats of the game. I think we have seen youngsters who are flying through the ranks," Donald said. "What it does is it fasttracks a lot of good young bowlers or batsmen very quickly into the game. It's just that the skill level doesn't stands still for no one,” he said.

t will be a close contest when table-toppers Chennai Super Kings clash with Mumbai Indians today on the latter’s home turf. Chennai has had a superb run this IPL season and will look to continue playing in same fashion. Meanwhile, Mumbai would do everything possible to win this match and get back to being among the top-four as they are currently placed at the fifth position. Mumbai lost their previous encounter to the Sunrisers Hyderabad while Chennai Super Kings defeated Kings XI Punjab in their last match. Both Chennai and Mumbai have played against each other earlier in this tournament and MI emerged victorious over the Kings. It was a close match which CSK lost and the Chennai side would hope to seek revenge on this occasion.

MI VS CSK AT 4PM RR VS PWI AT 8PM ON SET MAX But with Chennai Super Kings’ current form, it would undoubtedly be an uphill task for the hosts. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals take on Pune Warriors India at the Sawai Mansingh

Stadium in Jaipur. Pune, who, after losing nine matches this year and being placed last on the points table, do not stand a chance to make it to the playoffs, would look to redeem their lost pride and post a worthwhile victory. At the same time the Rahul Dravid-led Rajasthan Royals side would eye another win and strengthen their chances of

retaining their place among the top four teams. Although the Royals, who are placed at the fourth position, lost their previous match against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday, they undoubtedly are the formidable side among the two teams (RR and PWI) and stand a much higher chance of winning today’s match.

Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 6 wickets

HYDERABAD: Delhi Daredevils slumped to their eight defeat on Friday when they lost to the Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets at the latter’s home ground on Saturday. With this defeat, the Daredevils do not stand a chance to qualify for the play-offs. The match looked to be a complete lopsided affair as the hosts dominated Delhi from the very word go. Chasing 81 for victory, Hyderabad reached the target in just 13.5 overs. Dhawan top-scored with a well-paced 22 while Man of the Match Darren Sammy was unbeaten on 18. The Sunrisers’ lost four wickets in their bid to reach the target. Earlier, Delhi won the toss and decided to bat but winning

the toss seemed to have gone against them as they lost quick wickets. The first player to be dismissed was the skipper Mahela Jayawardene. Virender Sehwag soon followed suit and it was a near similar tale with the other batsmen. Unmukt Chand top-scored for Delhi with 17 runs. However, credit needs to be given to the Sunrisers bowlers who bowled a perfect length and line to wrap up Delhi Daredevils’s innings at 80 runs in 19.1 overs. While Dale Steyn, Thisara Perera and Sammy claimed two wickets apiece, the other bowlers took a wicket each. With this victory, Sunrisers Hyderabad extend their unbeaten win-streak at home to five games. AS

Arsenal third, after Walcott’s swift score Tom WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse

LONDON: Theo Walcott scored the fastest goal of the Premier League season as Arsenal beat Queens Park Rangers 1-0 to climb to third place on Saturday, while Wigan boosted their hopes of survival with a resilient 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion. Walcott netted after just 20 seconds against relegated QPR at Loftus Road, eclipsing former Arsenal team-mate Robin van Persie, who had scored for Manchester United against West Ham United after 33 seconds in Novem-

ber. The England forward was denied by QPR goalkeeper Rob Green on three separate occasions as the visitors sought a second goal, but Arsenal were ultimately indebted to their own goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, for a fine late save to thwart Loic Remy. “You can only win your own games and watch what happens elsewhere,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. “Chelsea play Tottenham on Wednesday and they’re at Manchester United tomorrow. Football is unpredictable, but for three months we’ve been in a position where we cannot drop points.”

MADRID: Real Madrid

ended ten-man Bayern Munich’s 14-match winning streak in the Bundesliga on Saturday as the warm-up for the Champions League final ended in a 1-1 draw. For the first time since December, Bayern dropped league points, but both sides fielded just a handful of first-choice players set to start the Wembley final on May 25 — six from Dortmund and four from Bayern. Although Bayern beat Borussia 1-0 in the German Cup quarter-finals in February, the Bavarians have failed to beat their rivals in six Bundesliga attempts — their last league win was back in February 2010. “That was a challenge where they met us eye-to-eye,” said Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. “It was a great game, even though there isn’t much on it.” Bayern had already been crowned Bundesliga champions four weeks ago and with Dortmund all but guaranteed second place, there was nothing more than bragging rights to play for at Signal Iduna Park. An early goal by Dortmund wing Kevin Grosskreutz was cancelled out when Mario Gomez was left unmarked at the far post on 23 minutes and the Ger many star headed Munich level. The game burst into life after the break as Dortmund were awarded a penalty when Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng blocked a shot with his hand, but Manuel Neuer saved Robert Lewandowski’s spot-kick. Bayern were reduced to 10 men for the final 25 minutes when right-back Rafinha was sent off. During his tussle down the right with Dortmund midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski, the

forced Barcelona to delay their title celebrations as Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 200th Real goal in an entertaining 4-3 win over Valladolid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. The result cut Barcelona’s lead at the top to eight points and although they can’t now mathematically seal the title with a win over Real Betis on Sunday, they can restore their 11-point lead with just four games remaining. And defender Pepe said afterwards it is important to keep going until the end of the season just in case Barca struggle to get across the line. “We need to do our job and then see what happens,” he told Canal Plus. “We are representing a Brazilian thrust his elbow up into the Poland captain’s face for a straight red. Blaszczykowski was also shown a yellow for remonstrating with referee Peter Gagelmann, while a heated discussion flared up on the sidelines between Bayern’s director of sport Matthias Sammer and Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp. “No one came here thinking it would be a friendly,” said Klopp. “Sammer had said I should leave Rafinha alone, then I said something back, before Mr Gagelmann ordered us to shake hands.” Third-placed Bayer Leverkusen sealed automatic qualification for the Champions League with a 2-0 win at Nuremberg. In Saturday’s other game, Hanover 96 drew 2-2 with Mainz.

Victory took Arsenal above both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, who had briefly claimed fourth place after Gareth Bale scored yet another superb goal in a 1-0 win over his former club Southampton. Callum McManaman also scored a late winner as Wigan gave themselves renewed hope of pulling off another late escape by twice coming from behind to win at West Brom. The home side went in front twice at the Hawthorns, through Shane Long and Gareth McAuley, only for Wigan to reply on each occasion.

very big institution that is Real Madrid and we need to have respect for that. Therefore, we need to face every game like this even if theorically it doesn’t matter. “We conceded a lot of goals, we didn’t start the game well and I think we have to pressure a little more, but in any case we managed to react.” The hosts had been caught cold early on when a slack crossfield pass from Angel Di Maria was intercepted by Oscar Gonzalez and he galloped clear behind the Real defence before slotting past Lopez at his near post. The goal seemed to spark Madrid into life though and after Kaka had forced Jaime Jimenez into a fine flying save, they were level on 26 minutes when Di Maria cut inside and saw his goalbound drive deflected into his own net by Valiente.

Jose Mourinho’s men continued to force the pace after drawing level and went in front six minutes later as Ronaldo rose highest to meet Di Maria’s in-swinging cross to flick home his 32nd league goal of the season. Just three minutes later Valladolid were level again though as a wonderful pass from Oscar released Omar Ramos down the left and his low cross was turned in at the far post by Guerra. The hosts were back in front just three minutes after the restart as Karim Benzema played in Kaka and Jaime couldn’t keep the Brazilian’s shot out despite getting a hand to it. And 21 minutes from time Ronaldo remarkably brought up his double century in Madrid colours after just 196 games as he powered another header into the far corner from Mesut Ozil’s corner.
