Bifurcation hits governance Normal procedures like recruitment and policy decisions have been put on hold till the creation of the two states. Youngsters aspiring for sarkari jobs have a long wait ahead. Md Inkeshaf ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: The approval of Cabinet note on creation of a separate Telangana state has begun to have its impact on the governance and political behaviour. The official programmes of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in his native Chittoor district on Saturday underwent changes. The CM was scheduled to lay foundations stones and inaugurate various development programmes in the temple town of Tirupati. According to authorities, these programmes were removed from the itinerary of the CM purportedly because of the beginning of the Telangana state creation process. Similarly, the administration of the State government is set to undergo a lot of changes in coming days. The ambitious dream of the
THE CHIEF MINISTER’S AMBITIOUS DREAM TO PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT TO LAKHS OF YOUTHS IN VARIOUS GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS IS UNLIKELY TO TAKE OFF. CM to provide employment to lakhs of youths in various government departments is unlikely to take off. The State government and recruiting agencies like AP State Public Service Commission (APPSC) cannot undertake the process of recruiting for the posts of Group-1, Group-2 and other Zonal-level posts. "The state can undertake the recruitment of intra-district posts like village secretary and government teachers. But it can’t take up recruitment process to fill up group-1 and group-
2 posts as it involves Zonal system. It can only be undertaken only after the formation of the two new states," a senior official in the State administration told Postnoon. According to an estimate, the State government had accorded permission to fill up over 35,000 government posts including teachers. This would clearly mean that the lakhs of unemployed graduates have to wait till the formation of the two states to fulfil their dreams of securing a government job. It may be also be noted that the APPSC had already put its recruitment process on hold following the announcement of creation of separate Telangana state on July 30 this year. Apart from this, the State administration will have to seek permission of the Central government for implementing any new scheme and policy. This will impact any proposed scheme of the government in coming days.
hough the number of cases of dengue and malaria has been rising in the City, the GHMC seems to be in deep slumber. Recently, GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu directed the health wing officials to take up special drive for spreading awareness on communicable diseases and conduct medical camps in three spells from October 18, October 21-29 and November 4-19. However, reality check reveals the claims exist only on paper. Apart from conducting awareness programs at the medical camps, the health department and the entomology wing officials are also supposed to take up anti-larval operations and concentrate on hot-spots by removing hyacinth from water bodies wherever necessary. Though health camps are supposed to be conducted, especially in slum areas, so far all areas have not received these facilities. Officials blame the lack of manpower for failing to reach out to all the areas. The death of 15-year-old Sirisha from Krishnanagar in Kachiguda on Saturday evening is an example how the GHMC’s failure in taking proper precautionary measures result in loss of lives. One week ago, two children from the same colony had fallen unconscious and were shifted to the hospital because of the toxic gases
coming from the Krishna Nalla nearby. Absence of a Chief Medical Officer in the GHMC for a year now is said to be a major reason for the state of affairs. Ironically though, the first phase of the health camps are supposed to be conducted till October 8, the officials concerned wound up the so-called awareness programs by October 5 pleading that festive preparations are have to be made.
GHMC
DOES NOT ADMIT ITS FAILURE
When contacted, the chief entomologist, V Venkatesh, said they were instructed to conduct medical camps in the first phase only from October 1-5. “We have so far been conducting health camps in all the 18 circles and there has been a good response from the public. So far since there is no outbreak of major diseases, we have been concentrating on awareness programs in slum areas. Because of the lack of staff, we decided to conduct camps at alternate times in these 18 circles,” he said.

N
ormally, laying a foundation stone is the beginning of a project, but in government parlance it means the end of work! Or so it seems in the instance of the Raidurgam Government Junior College in Serinlingampally. The foundation stone was laid last November and there is no sign of any activity. At the stone-laying ceremony, the Union minister for urban development, S Jaipal Reddy had said that providing facilities to students is the priority of the government. He said education was on top of the agenda and nothing gives him pleasure as much as participating in a function that intends to facilitate education. The nice words had drawn applause. But should he visit the place again, he would see the forlorn stone and brambles growing lustily around. "As the government is neglecting the education sector students of junior college are still forced to sit in Zilla Parishad High School building where the classes are arranged for them. It is a discomfort to both the school and the college students to have this arrangement. They all were hoping the new college would mitigate their sufferings, but of no avail,” regretted the principal of Raidurgam Government Junior

We made requests many times last year to the Commissioner of Intermediate Education and the local MLA to at least start the construction of the building by the end of the academic year 2012-13, but nothing happened.”
Speaking to Postnoon, the regional inspection officer, board of intermediate, Rangareddy district, B Prasad, said that it seems that the government is not in a position to allocate the funds for the construction. It was announced that `86 lakh will be released for the project. Since the money is not coming from the State government, the only alternative remains the MP’s Local Area Development
Fund. However, there is no guarantee that this will work out. Students of the Junior College rue that despite entering the college they are still forced to feel the school atmosphere as the college is working in Zilla Parishad High School. “I am an Intermediate student, but I find myself attending classes in a Class VII classroom. The feel of college that I have always dreamed of, is completely
missing due to the absence of a separate building,”laments a student. Bala Krishna, an Intermediate second year student says: “I thought last year that this academic year we can attend the college in new building but my dream doesn't come true. If the work starts now, at least the next batch may be the lucky to attend the classes in new building.”

Whose idea is it anyway? After a great response to his first book, author of Ice Boys in Bell-bottoms, Krishna Shastri Devulupalli, has launched his latest book, Jump Cut. The book narrates how stealing original ideas is rampant in every creative industry in our country. Krishna talks to Postnoon about the book and much more. book reading is taken seriously, he asserted that the country has surely seen an increase, in the sense that people have started reading books, but they only read a few selected authors and are not aware of others out there. He adds, “reading books should be incorporated from an early age, like school or at home, through which would learn to read books written by various authors. There are many TeluguHindi writers who are amazing and people should start a movement to get better in their native language and read books written by various authors.” Krishna is familiar with the

he book Jump Cut narrates the story of Ray Raman, who comes to visit his father in India. His ailing father, a writer for films, is crestfallen after a powerful filmmaker takes credit for his writing. Ray takes on the filmmaker and gets a taste of the underbelly of the Indian film industry. Sharing his views on how he came up with the book, he said, “When I finished my first book, Ice Boys in Bell-bottoms, I was tempted to write a sequel for the same, and I had planned three books, set in the 70s, 80s and 90s. The first book is a coming-of-age story of a boy in a family of writers/artistes, which was partly autobiographical, But something in me realised that I should do something unique and took up a difficult project and came up with my second book, Jump Cut, which was in my head for a long time.” He continues, “if we look closely there is hardly any respect for original work, we get too see a lot people stealing original work, let it be a film script, book ideas or for that matter in journalism. Recently, we all read about a popular journalist who stole an article from another and that was all over the news. These kind of things are rampant in this country. So living as an artist, I have learnt that these things happen everywhere and I could have chosen any profession to write on. But, such things happen increasingly in films, so I chose films and set the book in Chennai as it’s the city I am most familiar with.” He goes on to say that the book not only revolves around a bond shared by father and son, but the story but also involves a NRI. “I always found NRIs intriguing and wondered why

they usually come for such short visits to the country and are perpetually in a hurry to go back, rather than spending time here. I have explored that area too in my book.” “The book revolves around aspects such as a love story, something on friendship and much more.” He adds. When asked whether his book would help people ‘not’
steal ideas, he replied saying that people don’t necessarily change after reading books. But this was his way to touch on a practice that was rampant in the country. he further added that by making it a fun read writers could convey many serious issues and he hopes that it pays off. Krishna asserts that coming to Hyderabad is like coming
home and that the response for his books in the City has been great. He also adds that this is his forth visit and the second time was for a launch. “I enjoy interacting with the audiences, my first book has done good in the City. Hyderabad is surely my stop point every time I write a book,” he says. When asked about India growing into a country where

The kind of film I hope to make are intelligent films, I was speaking to a director during my recent visit to Hyderabad, who is also a very intelligent film maker. I have pitched few stories to few people and hope something works out.” Krishna is also working on the second part of his first book, Ice Boys in Bell-bottoms, which was set in Madras of the 70s. As of now, he is on this series, the second of the trilogy, Rally Days and Disco Nights.

Drunk cop shoots boy
NEW DELHI: A Punjab Police officer, posted here, critically injured a youth after he fired with his service revolver at him and two others following an argument, police said. The accused, who was said to be drunk, has been arrested since. The incident was reported from Jai Mata Market in North Delhi’s Keshav Puram area on Friday night. Narendra opened fire on Arun, 22, his brother Himanshu and one of his friends when they had taken their pet for a walk after having their dinner, a police officer said. Arun received two bullets in his chest and is battling for his life in a nearby hospital, while
the other two escaped unhurt. The accused tried to flee from the spot after committing the crime but was captured by some passers-by and was handed over to police. Himanshu told police that Narendra, who was in inebriated state, approached them and asked about an address. Later he started forcing them to drop him to his house, he added. “When Arun said no to Narendra, the police officer started abusing them and took out his pistol and fired, injuring him,” said the officer. A case has been registered against Narendra, who is deputed at Punjab Bhawan in Delhi, said the officer.

US Navy SEALs raid Somali militants: report WASHINGTON: US forces staged a predawn raid against a senior Shebab militant leader in Somalia though it was unclear whether he was killed or captured, officials said Saturday. “I can confirm that yesterday, October 4, US military personnel were involved in a counterterrorism operation against a known Shebab terrorist,” Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement. The assault took place amid reports that US Special Operations Forces had captured in Libya a man known as Abu Anas al-Libi, a long-sought AlQaeda operative indicted in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. A US official said the operation in Somalia sought to capture a “high-value” Shebab leader, and that no US personnel were injured or killed. The operation marked the most significant US assault in Somalia since commandos killed key Al-Qaeda operative Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in the same area four years ago. It followed an attack by Shebab gunmen last month on the upscale Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi that left 67 people dead during a four-day siege. “US personnel took all necessary precautions to avoid civilian casualties in this operation and disengaged after inflicting some Shebab casualties,” the official said. Declining to identify the people who died, the official said that
US forces detain Abu Anas al-Libi: official US FORCES have captured Abu Anas al-Libi, a long-sought AlQaeda operative indicted in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, an official said. “As the result of a US counterterrorism operation, Abu Anas al-Libi is currently detained by the US military in a secure location outside of Libya,” Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement. The operation to capture the suspect, known as Abu Anas alLibi, took place with the knowledge of the Libyan government, a US official told CNN.
“even in these extreme operational circumstances, the US military is very cautious to minimize civilian casualties.” The statement was an acknowledgement of US authorities’ concern with the bitter antiAmerican sentiment fueled by civilian casualties in US military operations. The Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab had earlier claimed it was British and Turkish special forces that
staged a nighttime sea and air attack on one of its bases, but Britain denied any involvement. Leaders of the Islamist insurgents in the southern Somali port of Barawe said commandos rappelled from a helicopter and tried to storm a house belonging to a senior Shebab commander, but the assault failed. The SEAL team approached and fired on the unidentified target’s seaside villa by sea, accord-
ing to The New York Times. Although the Shebab leader was believed to have been killed during the pre-planned assault, the SEALs had to withdraw before they could confirm the kill, a senior US official told the newspaper. “The Barawe raid was planned a week and a half ago,” a US security official told the Times. “It was prompted by the
Westgate attack.” A senior Somali government official told the newspaper that “the attack was carried out by the American forces and the Somali government was pre-informed about the attack.” Shebab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab told AFP that commandos had stormed the beach by boat, but laid blamed on Britain and Turkey. “The bungled operation was carried out by white people, who came with two small boats from a larger ship out at sea... one Shebab guard was killed, but reinforcements soon came and the foreigners fled,” he said. “Where the foreigners had been, afterwards we saw lots of blood, so maybe we wounded AFP some.”

British actor Jude Law, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, The Clash guitarist Paul Simonon and Damon Albarn, frontman of British band Blur, joined about 1,000 people gathered outside the Russian embassy in London, as other protesters rallied in cities across the world. Accounts differed as to whether the attack on the pilgrims in the Adhamiyah area of north Baghdad, which killed at least 49 people and wounded at least 75, was a bomb followed by a suicide bombing, or a suicide attack alone. EDITORIALS WARMING WARNING call for correction When does a traffic constable get posted at a junction? After there’s been a fatal accident, right? Yes, we have this innate ability to react, in the event of a casualty. If only we acted on foresight, many a mishap could be averted. But then, we are humans you see. To compound matters we are a selfish lot, and so do not have the ability to look beyond ourselves, especially when we are ourselves in trouble. The world responsibilities certainly take the backseat when we are bogged down with problems of our own. So has it been with the way we we’ve handled the demon that is global warming. A few years back when all was hunkydory with internal affairs of the US of A, and the countries that matter, the issue was dealt with strongly and the results have been very positive. One policy that made a big difference was the by and large stopping of production of two-stroke automobiles. Even Maldives contributed, addressing the concern of rise of sea levels with a unique underwater cabinet meeting. But now with the superpower fighting for its own survival and China engaged in its domestic economic issues, this matter is an ignored one. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with ex-vicepresident Gore, issued a report last week in Stockholm about mounting risks of global warming, from heat waves to rising sea levels. Wishful thinking is not going to banish this devil, something must be done, and soon.

For the October 11 announcement, topping the list this year is Malala, the Pakistani teen who survived a shot to the head last year by the Taliban for championing girls’ education. The head of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, Kristian Berg Harpviken, said she “not only has become a symbol of girls’ and children’s right to education and security, but also of the fight against extremism and oppression”. But others suggest the prize would be too heavy to bear given her young age of 16. “I’m not sure it would be suitable, from an ethical point of view, to give the Peace prize to a child,” Tilman Brueck, the head of Stockholm peace research institute SIPRI, told Norwegian news agency NTB. In October 2012, the world watched as the Taliban shot a 15-year-old girl named Malala Yousafzai on her way to school in Mingora, in north-western Pakistan. The United Nations has declared, July 12 as Malala Day in honour of this inspirational young girl and in order to commemorate her 16th birthday. She celebrated this day by making her first public appearance and delivering a speech to the UN Youth Assembly, which only emphasised the many ways that she has changed the world at such a young age. Malala, according to feminist and equality in education activist Chelsea Dias: 1. Sparked a dialogue about children’s education throughout the world 2. Three million people have signed the Malala Petition 3. Her ability to be fearless is inspiring beyond measure 4. She has created the Malala Fund 5. She has taught us all about forgiveness 6. She has shown us that there is no age limit to stand up against injustice 7. Her story has reminded
children throughout the world not to take anything for granted 8. She has challenged us all to wage a war 9. She has illustrated the importance of peaceful conflict resolution 10. She has caused the UN to recommit to Millennium Development Goal 2 Last month, a painting of hers was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in London; last week, she addressed a global audience in New York on behalf of Bill and Hillary Clinton; and next week, at the age of 16, she will publish her autobiography, I am Malala. The bullet, which passed through her skull and got embedded in her shoulder, was a punishment for the BBC blog she began writing as an 11-yearold to highlight the repression of women in her region. Yousafzai wrote about being told “not to wear colourful clothing as the [Taliban] would object to it”, and constantly remarked on the noise of

The then 11-yearold girl repeatedly expresses her desire to return to school, and sadness that many of her friends’ families were moving away to provinces their daughters could safely attend school in. Rebecca Fowler wrote in The Telegraph, “The weight of expectation on Malala is enormous, with many predicting already that she will one day be
the prime minister of Pakistan.” Fowler adds, “Now she is a global symbol and, with her still childish, high-pitched voice, she has not just made us aware of the glaring atrocities in her own Taliban-run culture, but also some of the less-thanperfect aspects of our own world — although respectfully and with all the manners of a very nicely brought up girl.” Named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in April 2013, many still criticise her for promoting a “Western agenda,” including a senior Pakistan Taliban commander who has urged her to return home. As a father of two schoolgoing girls, pictures of the tender yet spiking gutsy youngster from hospital had sent shudders down my spine, the pink teddy bear in the frame notwithstanding. On October 9, I shall silently celebrate one year of her miraculous recovery in the backdrop of my own little ones filling my space of happiness.

Technology glitches plague Barack’s Obamacare
Rob Lever
WASHINGTON: It’s not just politics, but technology issues raising questions about the future of Obamacare, the landmark health reform spearheaded by President Barack Obama. As the enrollment system went live October 1 for new Affordable Care Act to cover the uninsured, websites set up for the federal and state governments saw overloads, glitches and crashes, in a big embarrassment for the program. “Whether you are for or against Obamacare, everyone seems to agree the government really dropped the ball on this rollout,” said independent technology analyst Jeff Kagan. “Why didn’t the government ask for corporate help before the train wreck?” US health officials and some experts said the surge of interest was positive, but the technical problems could deal a blow to the program, which aims to extend coverage to millions of Americans lacking insurance. “It seems these are normal growing pains,” said Robert Field, a health care policy specialist at Drexel University. “It would have been surprising if there were no problems. In a way, they are a victim of their own success. But if we have these problems weeks from now it will be something more serious.” The launch of healthcare.gov and exchanges in more than 30 states went ahead despite a US government shutdown incited by Republicans opposed to the law, and Obama vowed that six in 10 people could find insurance there for less than $100 per month. But millions of people were frustrated by the technical issues. AFP found error messages and system failures on several sites, as did other media organizations. While the Obama administration has a reputation for being tech-savvy, analysts said the bureaucratic process made it difficult to refine and test the system before it went live.
Stephanie Lee (L), and Payal Shah (C), counselors with The Metropolitan Family Health Network, encourage Stephanie Ruiz (R), who is uninsured, to sign up for the Affordable Care Act, better known as ObamaCare, prior to Ruiz’s appointment at a branch of the Metopolitan Family Health network in Jersey City, New Jersey. ANDREW BURTON/GETTY IMAGES/AFP “It took nearly two years to come out with regulations” for the system, said Dan Schuyler at the health consulting firm Leavitt Partner. “The vendors are very capable, but because of a lack of guidance and timing and delays, they could not get the system tested.” Chris Rasmussen, an analyst who follows health care with the Center for Democracy and Technology digital rights group, said the problems appear to be “easily repairable” but could produce a public relations “black eye” for Obamacare. Rasmussen said his group’s analysis suggests the privacy and security of the online exchanges appears to be robust despite “hyperbole” from
Obamacare critics. Kagan said it was important for the administration to fix the glitches before trust in the system is eroded. “This is one of the largest and most complex things we have ever done. Typically, a company launches a project like this in a city, then a few cities,” said Kagan. “They figure out what doesn’t work right and they fix it before they roll it out nationwide. Why the government thinks it doesn’t have to follow the same rules of common sense is a mystery.” Conservatives opposing the reform seized on the news as a sign of the overall problems with the law, which has created a political chasm in Washington
leading to the government shutdown. David Inserra of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, said the technical issues highlight broader problems with the reform. “The cyber risks in the Obamacare exchanges endanger Americans by making them more susceptible to identity theft, insurance fraud, and other crimes,” he wrote in a blog post. “Add to that a whole host of other Obamacare failures, delays, special exemptions, broken promises, and unintended consequences.” Republican Senator John Barrasso told Fox Business News that “I don’t think these are glitches. This is a systemat-
ic failure of the exchanges.” Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the center-right American Action Forum told Fox “it’s hard to believe that after two-and-a-half years, they weren’t ready for the traffic to the sites, they weren’t ready to determine eligibility, and literally they weren’t ready to turn on the switch and have it function properly.” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius meanwhile argued that “the volume-related issues are ones that we welcome.” She told CNN this “shows how many people are eager to get real information,” and noted that the enrollment period goes through March 2014. ‘I’M STILL NOT DEAD’ Kate Millar Agence France-Presse
BERLIN: A generation ago, German readers were shocked and fascinated by the story of a 13-year-old girl shooting up heroin and working as a child prostitute on the gritty streets of 1970s West Berlin. The harrowing biography of the pretty teenager, then identified only as Christiane F., sold more than four million copies, was turned into a movie guest-starring David Bowie and became a school textbook. For many readers now, the biggest surprise about a new book by Christiane F., to be published Thursday during the Frankfurt Book Fair, is that its author is still alive. “I’m still not dead,” says the woman whose full name is Christiane Felscherinow. “Hardly anyone would have believed that I’d turn 51 years old,” she says in a short online video to promote her new book “Christiane F. - Mein Zweites Leben” (My Second Life). “But look, here I am. Many warned me, ‘if you continue that way, you won’t see 40’,” she adds, her voice raspy but her face betraying surprisingly few signs of the years of drug abuse and turmoil that continued well into adulthood. Felscherinow spent her teenage years in high-rise tower blocks in the west of what was then a divided Berlin, the daughter of a violent father and a working mother. At age 12, she took hashish; by 13 she was into heroin, keen to fit in with the crowd she met at West Berlin’s trendy “Sound” disco to escape her

home life. Caught in a spiral of addiction, crime and squalor, she joined other youngsters turning tricks to fund the habit around the city’s Bahnhof Zoo railway station, even as friends died from overdoses around her. Finally she was sent to stay with her grandmother in the country and beat the addiction. ‘I was so clean’ Her path to fame started when she testified as a witness at a paedophile’s trial and met a reporter for news weekly Stern. Their initial interview turned into a three-month exchange, which led to a series of magazine articles and then the co-authored 1978 book Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (We, Children of Bahnhof Zoo) -simply titled “Christiane F.” in the English version. The gritty story cracked open a deadly world unknown to many, but its “hero”, with her cool hairstyle, love of Bowie and candidness, also roused readers’ sympathy. Three years later followed a movie with a Bowie soundtrack and appearance. By now Christiane F. had become Germany’s most famous junkie.
As a young adult, she was invited onto chat shows, and even flew to Los Angeles after the film’s US release to appear on a radio show, and met rock and acting stars including Billy Idol. But the story didn’t end there, as she writes in her new book. She fell back into old habits, cocaine initially and then “H”, as it’s referred to in the film. “I was so clean that I no longer tolerated it,” she writes. “I just puked again and again, even when my stomach was already empty. “I know it sounds nuts; you puke your guts up but it feels like the loveliest thing in the world.” The Second Life autobiography, which Felscherinow presents in Frankfurt next Friday, is another disarmingly frank chronicle of rollercoaster years of drugs, withdrawal, adventures with rock and literary stars, and even a stint in jail. It kicks off with life on a Greek island, where she fell in love, had an abortion and was eventually let down when her lover came out of jail and began an affair with his brother’s girlfriend.
“Today I know that these years in Greece were the happiest of my life,” she says in the book, co-written with journalist Sonja Vukovic. The birth of her son, Phillip, in 1996 heralds hope and happiness. “There was now this tiny being that needed me. And it was all I needed. Everything else didn’t matter to me,” she writes. Felscherinow movingly describes her quest to be a good mother, striving for everyday routines to provide a stable family life: “The boy simply did me good. Through him I became a better person.” But in 2008 when she tried to move to Amsterdam, authorities took away custody. She and Phillip went to the Netherlands, only to return six weeks later to Germany where he was placed with foster parents. She later won custody rights back in 2010, but decided that the boy should stay with his foster parents instead, according to Stern. The years have left other scars. Felscherinow has been on a methadone substitution programme for nearly 20 years, and she suffers from Hepatitis C. But to many, she is a sur-
vivor, not afraid to look back with brutal honesty. Last month, her face was again on the cover of Stern news weekly, with the same intense gaze and clean-cut pony tail, as a photo the magazine ran of her at age 16. “With her sensitive gift of observation and precise memory, a determination and adventurous courage,” wrote a Stern reporter, “she reported without self pity, unsparingly even against herself.”
THEN AND NOW At age 12, she took hashish; by 13 she was into heroin, keen to fit in with the crowd she met at West Berlin’s trendy “Sound” disco to escape her home life.
But look, here I am. Many warned me, ‘if you continue that way, you won’t see 40. Christiane F.

How do Nobel laureates spend their prize money? Once the frenzied media attention, formal appearances and ceremonies are over, this year's Nobel laureates will also have to decide how to spend the $1.25 million prize money. Tom SULLIVAN
STOCKHOLM: Nobel laureates sometimes display as much ingenuity when deciding how to spend their prize money as they did on the work that won them the award in the first place. When Sir Paul Nurse won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2001, he decided to upgrade his motorbike. A fellow winner in 1993, Richard Roberts, installed a croquet lawn in front of his house. Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek, who won in 2004, said the prize meant "financial independence." This year's awards get under way on Monday, starting with the medicine prize and wrapping up a week later with the economics prize. Once the frenzied media attention, formal appearances and ceremonies are over, this year's Nobel laureates will also have to decide how to spend the eight million kronor ($1.25 million, 925,000 euros) prize money. And judging from past experience, anything can happen. Sometimes they donate it to charity or scientific research, but that is by no means universal. Lars Heikensten, executive director of the Nobel Foundation, said there were no obvious shop-
ping trends among laureates. "I think it depends a lot on which country they come from, their personal finances... what kind of incomes they have when they get the prize, and where they are in life," he said. However real estate is a popular option, at least among those willing to reveal what they spend the money on. Over a million dollars sounds like a lot but it is often shared between several winners, diluting their Nobel spending power. Wolfgang Ketterle at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who shared the 2001 physics prize with two colleagues, put his share towards a house and his children's education. "Since half goes to taxes in the US, there was nothing (more) left," he said. Phillip Sharp, the American co-winner of the 1993 medicine prize, decided to splash out on a 100-year-old Federal style house. "I took that money and bought a little bit bigger house... It's a beautiful old place," he told AFP, adding that "the money is a nice part of the process" but "the important thing about the prize is the recognition." Deciding how to spend their money can take some time as new
US PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON WON THE PRIZE IN 1920 BUT LEFT IT IN A SWEDISH BANK TO EARN INTEREST, APPARENTLY BECAUSE HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT LIFE AFTER RETIREMENT IN AN AGE WHEN FORMER PRESIDENTS GOT NO GOVERNMENT PENSION, ACCORDING TO ONE BIOGRAPHY. laureates are inundated with offers to attend meetings, lectures and inaugurations during their first year. "I've not managed to think about the prize money. There have been great demands on my time," said Serge Haroche, joint winner of the 2012 physics prize, although he said he would probably look into real estate. For winners of the peace prize the decision is often more clearcut, as the honour tends to go to
politicians, organisations and activists who are under more public scrutiny. Many, like US President Barack Obama in 2009 and the European Union in 2012, donate to charities. Others support pet projects: the 2008 winner, former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, said he would finance a conflict resolution group he had set up. Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus, who founded the Grameen Bank -- which gives loans to lift people out of poverty -- said he would fund an eye hospital and a business making affordable food for the poor with his 2006 prize money. But there has been one notable exception to the charitable giving. US President Woodrow Wilson won the prize in 1920 but left it in a Swedish bank to earn interest, apparently because he was concerned about life after retirement in an age when former presidents got no government pension, according to one biography. Cash prize lowered after economic crisis Literature laureates tend to be more private about how they use the money but the choice is often equally straightforward.
"Even if Nobel-winning authors are quite well known many of them will not have made much money from writing," said Anna Gunder, a Nobel literature expert at Uppsala University. While the prize might keep the wolf from the door for some years, giving them freedom to write, it can also briefly have the opposite effect. "It really changes their careers... During the first year after they've won they often write less but they generally continue after a year or two," said Gunder. The Nobel prize sum has fluctuated over the years, most recently in 2012 when it was reduced following the financial crisis. "We chose last year to act preemptively and take down the prize money and our expenditure by 20 percent," said Heikensten. "Since we're in this 'forever' we had to act in good time." There are no plans to increase the prize money again in the near future but few are likely to complain when they get that Nobel phone call. "I don't think the prize money is the real issue," said physics laureate Haroche. "I think the prize would be just as prestigious withAFP out it."

rt could be in words, pictures or colours. But the fact remains that it’s the way in which one expresses beauty in his/her chosen medium. Every artist has their own perception and understanding about art. According to Chitranka Chowdhury, “Art is life in vivid hues. You express your inner emotions through art, and that’s exactly what I do” It takes a lot of patience to express what one feels within but with growing technology and newer platforms cropping up every now and then, times have changed for artists who are on the lookout for modes to showcase their work. Long gone are the days when an artist was scared to take up art as a fulltime career. Coming from a rooted Bengali background, Chitranka had a strong inclination towards painting. “My childhood was amazing and so memorable. I was always surrounded by friends and family. As a kid, I used to love doodling on walls, on doors or on any empty space that I could get my hands on. Every doodle or scribble I did, I considered it a masterpiece. I was a kid so I was allowed to think that way,” she says. So did it stop with the scribbling one would wonder, but little do we know of her talents. “When I eventually started my venture, it was painting on fabrics mostly, which included everything from, t-shirts to kurtas, sarees. Later I stretched my repertoire to canvases, clay pots, glassware, mobile covers and murals of course,” she says. Setting up her venture, Artfully Yours, signed Chintraka’, in October 2012, was a dream come true for her. “I did my master’s in journalism, with

a background in print media. I, then went ahead and worked in the advertising industry for two years. Though the experience was amazing, I had always wanted to do something that I would be happy doing. So I set up Artfully Yours.” Christened by her sister, her name literally means, ‘an artist ‘. Day in and day out, she proves that there is no mountain high enough that can keep one from climbing it especially if it’s a loved one who is doing the pushing and providing all the support. “I wanted to give wings to my dreams, This is where my family and friends imbibed the trust in
me to take it forward. I think my work reflects all the positive energy around me,” says the talented artist. Love for the art is the first step towards an entire world of creative, imagination and passion. Belief in your talent and the courage to express it takes one on a different path altogether. Artists like Chitranka have proven to us that expressing your artistic abilities in the way you like, is no more a hobby or an extra circular activity. “Just follow your heart, and live your dreams. We have one life, so paint it with all the brightest shades possible. Don’t leave any canvas plain,” she says.

Climate Council raises $1m The climate change expert Professor Tim Flannery’s “Obamastyle” campaign to raise cash for a new Climate Council has generated $1m. Flannery was sacked as head of the federal government’s Climate Commission when the prime minister, Tony Abbott, announced he was abolishing the body to save money.
London air pollution high Air pollution from traffic and industry is dangerously high in east London, according to tests by local “citizen scientists”. Local environment groups placed 36 diffusion monitoring tubes on structures close to parks, bus stops, busy roads and in residential areas, to measure emissions in more than 30 streets. They were left for four weeks and only four were removed or stolen.
Walruses gather on island An estimated ten thousand Pacific walruses have huddled together on a remote island in the Chukchi Sea (map), an unusual phenomenon that’s due to a lack of sea ice, experts say. The giant marine mammal is known to “haul out”— literally haul its body onto ice or land to rest or warm up — on various places along the Arctic coast.
First-ever global deal struck on airline CO2 emissions
According to the ICAO forecasts, airline industry’s carbon emissions will have risen between four and six times. A deal on curbing the emissions is agreed upon.
A
first-ever global deal on curbing the airline industry’s rising carbon emissions was agreed on Friday, the International Civil Aviation Organization said, though hammering out the details could take years. The full agreement is not scheduled to take effect until 2020 but the most contentious issues have been resolved, officials said, as the ICAO’s full assembly met behind closed doors in Montreal. The deal “is an historic milestone for air transport and for the role of multilateralism in addressing global climate challenges,” ICAO Council President Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez said in a statement. Air transport “now becomes the only major
industry sector to have a multilateral global marketbased mechanism agreement in place to help govern future greenhouse gas emissions,” he added. Leading up to the vote, China and India had joined the United States and Russia in balking at a European Union push for a carbon levy on flights within three years. But at midday (1600 GMT), after some 1,400 delegates representing 170 member states voted on the executive committee’s resolution, officials said the plan had been passed and details of the accord would follow. “The good news is (in) having concluded a general agreement that includes China and India,” a diplomat involved in the negotiations said. Aviation accounts for around three percent of global CO2 emissions but the ICAO forecasts that by 2050 emissions will have risen between four and six times the levels they were in
2010. Last year, the EU suspended its CO2 Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) for intercontinental flights, after facing a storm of criticism. Under the EU’s ill-fated arrangement, airlines flying in EU airspace were required to buy pollution credits to cover 15 percent of their CO2 emissions for the entire flight, wherever it originated. Several nations rejected the scheme that threatened to tip into a trade war. The ICAO resolution “is a strong message to Europe after it lost three votes on its proposals,” a negotiator said. According to a draft text of the agreement submitted for consideration at the ICAO meeting, countries must agree by 2016 on a global market-based mechanism and reject all regional
schemes, according to the negotiator. The measure is to be accompanied by a series of technical and operational steps to reduce emissions, said a European Commission statement. Specific proposals under consideration for curbing CO2 emissions include a carbon tax and a carbon trading system. The European Union would thus have to abandon its more ambitious ETS and adhere to the new global system for curbing greenhouse gases linked to global warming. Even so, European Commission Vice President Siim Kallas praised Friday’s outcome. “I am very pleased that after long and hard negotiations we finally have a glob-
al deal on aviation emissions,” Kallas said in a statement. “This is good news for the traveling public, good news for the aviation industry, but most importantly it is very good news for the planet,” he said. Furthermore, he added, the deal averts a “damaging conflict among trading partners.” European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard meanwhile congratulated the ICAO members. “After so many years of talks the ICAO has finally agreed to the first-ever global deal to curb aviation emissions,” she said. In addition to the mechanism for curbing emissions, the accord also calls for promoting the use of better alternative aviation fuels and fuel-saving navigation. There is also an exemption clause that provides a “fair and equitable solution” for a number of countries facing “special circumstances or with limited capabilities,” said the EU. AFP

With each dish tastier than the other, I, the staunch meat lover, and my friend were left arguing about which seafood dish was the highlight of the night. And the contenders were many. Never did the thought cross my mind during the meal to try out chicken breast, pork bratwurst, beef piccata at the grill counter which was my initial idea before taking my first bite of the delicious Tandoori Fish Tikka starter. Then there was the Prawn Vupudu, and Ginger and Chilly Halibut. I should say that was the highlight among the starters… and oh… the fish anchovy. That is a musttry. Well, we were at a loss for words of praise and space as we ploughed through the spread, for there were many dishes made from various kinds: Halibut, King fish, Thilapia, eel, mackerel, anchovy, crab, mullet, Squids, baby octopus, baracuda, tuna. I can’t blame her for falling for that, because she is from the Christian belt of Kerala and there the thing enjoys the status of the ‘national dish’. So, I, too, found space for the ‘national dish’. When executive chef G Muthu Kumar learnt that where my friend was from, he asked her how it was. “Mmm…” she chewed. “Good…” There are other choices, too. There’s the ginger and lemon fish curry, adarakii murat korma curry with roti and naan. Now the best part. The food festival offers unlimited alcohol to wash down all that you eat. Cool, huh?

AWE INSPIRING N SETS FOR
RUDHRAMADEVI : GUNASEKHAR
ational award winning art director Thota Tharani is giving it as much as he can to make upcoming Telugu period-drama Rudhramadevi visually grand. The film’s director says his work is awe inspiring. “The sets that he (Thota Tharani) has recreated for this film will be highly talked about because his work is awe inspiring. He has already designed several sets for the film. Currently, we are shooting a song on a set of a queen’s chamber in Annapurna Studios,” director Gunasekhar told IANS.
“This particular set cost us several crores. Since, the story is set in the 13th century, a lot of effort was put into research and detailing of each set. We have nearly completed fifty per cent of the film so far,” he added. The film, which is also produced by Gunasekhar, features Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubati in the lead roles. Other actors such as Krishnam Raju, Aditi Chengappa, Nathalia Kaur and Zara Shah will be seen in important roles. The film is touted to be India’s first stereoscopic 3D film – IANS
RAMAYYA
VASTHAVAYYA
to release on October 10
T
here is no change in the release date of Junior NTR-starrer Telugu action-drama Ramayya Vasthavayya, says its producer Dil Raju. It will hit the screens October 10 as planned. There were rumours that the film’s release had been stalled following the Union cabinet’s nod for a separate Telangana state carved out of Andhra Pradesh. “There will absolutely be no change in the release of the film. As scheduled earlier, the film will release worldwide October 10. I know it’s going to be a tough situation in the state, but we are ready to stand up and face the consequences,” Raju told IANS.
First time directors have winning attitude: ASHOK SELVAN
T
amil actor Ashok Selvan, who has worked with three debutant directors in backto-back films such as Soodhu Kavvum, Pizza 2: Villa and Thegidi, says he finds a winning attitude in them.”I haven’t worked with experienced directors yet, and therefore, I can’t compare them with newcomers. But one thing that I have noticed in first time directors is their
urge to win. They work with a winning attitude and I admire it,” Ashok told IANS. “They are always up for interaction and suggestions. I have just started my career but I don’t have to think twice to start a conversation with them. I guess it’s not the same with experienced directors,” he added. While Ashok worked with debutant Nalan Kumarasamy in
Soodhu Kavvum, he teamed up with Deepan Chakravarthy and Ramesh for upcoming releases Pizza 2: Villa and Thegidi, respectively. Since we all belong to the same age category, more or less, our thoughts culminate and help us in working together sans ego, “ said the young actor. – IANS
“This festival (Dussehra) season has been very lucky for me. I can’t compromise this time and even if we face unforeseen problems, I may postpone the film by a day or two, but I don’t intend to miss this occasion,” he added. Kotha Bangaru Lokam and Brindavanam were two of Raju’s earlier releases that minted money after their release during the Dussehra weekend in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Asked if the formation of Telangana will affect the business of films, he said: “We can only comment when films are released, until then we can’t predict.” Meanwhile, film events such as audio launches and success meets scheduled for the weekend have been cancelled for undisclosed reasons. The audio of Nagarjuna-starrer Bhai was to be launched Friday but the launch has been cancelled. IANS

But now Jiah’s mother is claiming that her daughter may have been murdered. ‘Release of Indian films will double in Japan’ A RADHIKA BHAIRANI Indo-Asian News Service
amir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots not just gave the $2 billion Indian film industry a “foothold” in Japan but also opened up viewers to a “comparatively traditional” affair like Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan, says Akifumi Sugihara of Japan’s 101year-old production studio. The number of releases will soon double, he predicts. Sugihara, executive vice president (International Operations Department) of Japan’s oldest film production and distribution firm Nikkatsu Corporation, first came to India in 2011 to attend the Mumbai Film Mart, an annual business-to-business platform at the Mumbai Film Festival. Since then, his company has released four Indian films in Japan — 3 Idiots, which is still showing, Don 2, Ek Tha Tiger and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. This month he will be busy releasing Makkhi in his country. In an e-mail interview, Sugihari talked about the market of Indian films in Japan and how increased coproductions between the two countries can provide “a big stimulus for Asia to form a new highly potential entertainment market”. Q. What attracted you to the Mumbai Film Mart (MFM)? A. There were some souls I know well in the Japan film industry who repeatedly said good things about
Bollywood films and the industry. At the same time, I happened to know that Reliance Entertainment was influencing Hollywood in a substantial degree. Also, many Hollywood actors said they would like to appear in Bollywood films. These news about India and Bollywood encouraged me a lot to attend the MFM two years ago. What is the level of interest in Indian cinema in Japan? I feel 3 Idiots made a kind of foothold for Indian films in Japan market. I think the number of Indian films, which are (currently) being released in Japan, will be more than doubled immediately. What we will have to do as a distributor is to see how we can keep the trend growing.
You bought three films — 3 Idiots, Don 2 and Ek Tha Tiger. Did you recover the cost and earn profit? Actually, I bought four movies! In addition to what you said, Jab Tak Hai Jaan as well. We could manage to recoup the marketing expenditures for all those movies. 3 Idiots turned out to be a super hit. All the chosen movies were hardcore commercial films. Indian cinema is currently
witnessing a new wave of cinema in terms of its scripts and screenplay. Is that attracting Japanese viewers? That new wave or new trend actually motivated me to get involved more deeply in Indian movies. That must have affected lots of Japanese audience as well. Those audience, who were motivated by those new wave movies, found fresh interest in a comparatively traditional type of movie like Jab Tak Hai Jaan too. What sort of movies do Japanese viewers want to see? There seems to be a polarisation in the audience’s tastes — tremendously energetic action-oriented movies or mentallyhealing, heart-moving movies with a message. Indian films are seen as a viable medium for foreign countries to promote tourism, and India and Japan have recently signed a deal to get into co-productions and for exchange of technical
expertise. How do you think it will benefit the film industry and tourism in both the countries? Although Japan and India seem to be close to each other spiritually, they know little about each other. Through movies, people in both the countries will get to know each other much better and hopefully, people in both the countries will share common entertainment interests through co-productions. That will prove to be a big stimulus for Asia to form a new highly potential entertainment market. What are the facilities available for Indian filmmakers to shoot in your country? That is the biggest problem we will have to deal with and resolve. We will need our government’s help. Are Japanese filmmakers interested in collaborating with Indian filmmakers and shooting in India? IANS A great deal!

AFP/ALEXANDER NEMENOV in. “Of course, he was the better fighter, he’s the best in the world, that’s clear.” After a bright start, Povetkin hit the canvas in the second round after a sharp left hook from Klitschko, who weighed in at his lightest weight for four years, but the Russian was soon back on his feet. Klitschko slowly took the initiative in the third and fourth, as he started to use his jab to effect with Povetkin’s right eye start-
ing to bruise. The champion seized control in the seventh round when Povetkin went down three times. A left-right combination put Povetkin back on the canvas and although he survived the count, a fierce follow-up from the Ukrainian had the challenger down twice more. Povetkin went down for the fifth time in the ninth, although referee Luis Pabon ruled it was a push
from Klitschko. Povetkin’s face was puffing up, but Klitschko looked fresh in contrast as he chased his 52nd knockout, picking off shots with his left at will. But Povetkin came out with all guns blazing in the last two rounds and caught the champion with a good right in the 11th, while Klitschko had a point deducted for pushing Povetkin over again. The Russian was again put on the canvas in the 12th and the pair exchanged blows even after the final bell. The clash at Moscow’s Olimpiyski Arena was a battle of the former Olympic super-heavyweight champions. Povetkin won the Olympic gold at the 2004 Athens Games, eight years after Klitschko’s victory at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Povetkin suffered his first defeat having come into the fight with an undefeated record with 18 knockouts in 26 wins, while Klitschko has 51 knock-outs in 61 wins with the last of his three defeats having come AFP nearly a decade ago.
Scott closes gap on Helio HOUSTON: New Zealand’s Scott Dixon closed the gap significantly in the IndyCar Series points standings by capturing the first of two weekend doubleheader races at the Reliant Park street circuit on Saturday. Dixon’s win combined with a season-worst 18th-place finish for Brazil’s Helio Castroneves allowed Dixon to trim Castroneves’ lead from 49 points to just eight. There are two races left in the season, comprising Sunday’s second race in Houston and the October 19 race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. “It is not what we expected, but I am still the points leader,” Castroneves said. “We were competitive but I was worried about the car changing a lot from qualifying to the race.” Qualifying had been scheduled for Friday, but a bump in the track in turn one of the 2.57 kilometre (1.68 mile), 10-turn temporary street circuit forced the session to be postponed until Saturday morning. Track crews worked overnight and

In July, the two-time IndyCar champ won at Pocono and then claimed a weekend-sweep in Toronto. Castroneves qualified at a seasonlow 21st. He had a gearbox problem
and spent nine laps on pit lane getting repairs. He had been the only driver to complete every lap in the first 16 races this season prior to the Houston race. Dixon, of Auckland, led a racehigh 44 laps and crossed the finish line ahead of Switzerland’s Simona De Silvestro when the race finished under a caution flag. De Silvestro’s secondplace run marked her first podium spot in the series. Justin Wilson, of England, finished third, followed by Frenchman Simon Pagenaud, who won last month’s race in Baltimore. Josef Newgarden, of the USA, rounded out the top five. “I am still in it. I had a good day,” Pagenaud said. “I have a shot at a win tomorrow. We are not far back, just a tick off.” Japan’s Takuma Sato started from the pole but he stumbled to a 17th place finish. In April, Sato became the first Japanese-born driver to win an IndyCar race with a dominating performance on the streets of Long AFP Beach, California.
Pirelli hit back at Alonso YEONGAM: Pirelli have reportedly hit back at Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso after the two-time world champion became the latest driver to criticise their tyres. After qualifying on Saturday sixth for the Korean Grand Prix, Alonso told reporters that drivers were not able to push to the maximum because of the tyres, which critics say are too fragile. An unamused Paul Hembery, Pirelli motorsport director, fired back: “Of course Alonso is one of the great F1 drivers, so to hear such comments is disappointing and below the standards you would expect from such a champion. “I can only suggest he goes to ask the soonto-be four-times champion (Sebastian Vettel) how to get the best from the same tyres,” he was quoted as saying by the BBC. Pirelli changed the design of their tyres following a series of dramatic tyre failures at the British Grand Prix in June, after which drivers had threatened to boycott the German Grand Prix if the problem was not solved. However drivers have continued to voice their displeasure at the tyres for not being AFP durable enough.

Tiger helps US take lead

COLUMBUS: Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar won twice Saturday to stay unbeaten as the United States seized a 11 1/2-6 1/2 lead over the Internationals at the storm-hit Presidents Cup. Top-ranked Woods and Kuchar edged Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and Australian Adam Scott 1-up in four-ball to stand 3-0 in the golf showdown at soggy Muirfield Village. The Americans, who went 4-1 Saturday in four-ball and 2-2 in foursome matches interrupted by a Friday storm, need only six of 16 points available Sunday to win the trophy for the fifth time in a row and go 8-1-1 in the rivalry. “It’s not over,” Internationals captain Nick Price said. “We’ve still got a lot of golf to play.” Woods, a 14-time major winner who took five titles and the Player of the Year award this season, has a record 23 Presidents Cup match wins but is fatigued. “Tiger is honestly beat up. But Tiger is playing his tail off,” US captain Fred Couples said. “He’s a little sore and a little battered and this course, the ball is not rolling, it’s playing much harder and much longer so it’s tougher on everybody.” Heavy rain drenched the course for a third day in a row, pushing the end of four foursomes matches to Sunday with 12 concluding singles matches moved to Sunday morning to try and escape expected afternoon storms. In the only afternoon foursome match to finish, Zach Johnson eagled the par-5 15th for
‘Defending No 1 spot hard’ BEIJING: Novak Djokovic spoke of the challenge he faced defending his number one ranking as he prepares to be unseated from the top spot by Rafael Nadal, his opponent in Sunday’s China Open final. Even if Djokovic reclaims the title at Sunday’s final, he cannot stop Nadal from being named as number one when the ATP announces its new rankings on Monday. Nadal’s return to the top for the first time since July 2011 marks an astonishing comeback for the 13-time Grand Slam champ, who spent the second half of last year on the sidelines injured. Djokovic said that being number one “is an ultimate goal and challenge for anybody”. “I know how hard it is because I’ve been fighting for that place for last couple of years and I know what a player needs to do in order to end up (the) year at number AFP one,” he said.

a 4 and 3 victory for him and Jason Dufner over Australian Marc Leishman and South Africa’s Richard Sterne. Two down after seven, they won six of the last eight holes. The Internationals led in two suspended matches and the US team in one with the other level as darkness fell. “We’ve still got our work cut out for us,” Couples said. The Internationals need 11 wins in 16 matches to win. “We’re going to have a hell of a day tomorrow,” Price said.
Golfers used lift, clean and place rules and played in torrential showers before a 90-minute delay after rain flooded bunkers and greens and made rivers of fairways. “When you’ve got 36 holes in one day and you’ve got rain delays, that’s a whole new story,” Price said. “This is 36 holes of intense pressure for these guys. It’s the end of the season and they are tired.” Woods, a five-time winner of the US PGA Memorial event played at Muirfield Village, and reigning Memorial champion
Kuchar finished a 4-and-2 foursomes win over South Africans Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen before facing Matsuyama and Masters champion Scott. Matsuyama won two of the first three holes with birdies but Woods took two of the next three with birdies. Matsuyama sank a five-foot par putt to win 10 but Woods responded with a birdie to win 13, Kuchar birdied 14 and Woods had an eagle conceded at the par-5 15th for a 2-up US edge.

Johnson and Jason Dufner were 2-down after seven holes Saturday before winning six of the last eight for an improbable 4 and 3 alternate-shot triumph over South African Richard Sterne and Australian Marc Leishman. “From the eighth hole to the 15th I watched every step with Zach and Duf,” US captain Fred Couples said. “I’ve not seen golf like that ever in alternate shot. They hit every shot at the flag. It was incredible golf.” The reversal left the Americans ahead 11 1/2-6 1/2 with four darkness-halted foursomes matches and 12 singles matches set for Sunday at storm-saturated Muirfield Village. The Americans need to win only six of the 16 available points to win the trophy for the fifth time in a row and improve to 8-1-1 in the overall rivalry. AFP

Nadal back on top Neil CONNOR
BEIJING: Rafael Nadal (in pic) will return to number one in the world rankings after his semi-final opponent Tomas Berdych retired injured at the China Open Saturday, capping an astonishing comeback for the 13-time Grand Slam champion. The Spaniard needed to make the final in Beijing to edge ahead of Novak Djokovic in the new rankings, which will be announced by the ATP on Monday. The second seed will now confront Djokovic on Sunday in the climax of the tournament, after the defending champion in Beijing powered his way though his semi-final, dumping out France’s Richard Gasquet 64, 6-2. The Serb, who is on his 101st week as the top-ranked player, will be unseated by Nadal even if he reclaims the title. Nadal, who last topped the
rankings in July 2011, has enjoyed a remarkable season, returning from injury to dominate the hardcourt tournaments. He told reporters after his match that returning to the top spot had capped “a great year, one of the best years of my
career without any doubt”. “Sure is special be back to the top position of the ranking after more than a half year without playing tennis,” he added. “I felt during all the season very excited every time I go on court.”
Berdych pulled out of his semi-final after receiving treatment for an injury with Nadal leading 4-2 in the first set. Nadal had broken the Czech’s serve in the fifth game after the pair appeared to be matching each other competitively in the early stages. The world number five told reporters after the match that he suffered a back injury when he reached for a shot. He also praised Nadal’s achievement on reclaiming the top spot. “With Rafa, well, just all the credit. It is really incredibly well done in the whole short time that he has become a number one again,” he said. “That’s really an achievement for an athlete like him.” Djokovic has been in dominating form in China, where he has an unbeaten run stretching back to 2009. He has won three of the four last tournaments, and did not attend in 2011 due AFP to injury.

Afghanistan in WC triggers cash windfall DUBAI: Afghanistan’s remarkable success in qualifying for the 2015 cricket World Cup has netted the country a multi-million dollar windfall. Afghanistan, playing in the fifth tier of international cricket just five years ago, booked their place in the game’s global showpiece by beating Kenya by seven wickets in Sharjah on Friday. And on Saturday the financial rewards triggered by their maiden appearance in the cricket showpiece became apparent. The side from the sport’s second tier will receive a $1 million (£624,000, 738,000 euros) preparation fee from the global governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), ahead of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. That comes on top of the $422,000 awarded to the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) by the ICC Board in April of this year as part of its Targeted Assistance and Performance Programme (TAPP), aimed at raising playing standards. In 2014, the top ICC Associate and Affiliate Members - including Afghanistan - will also receive approximately $750,000 in base support through the ICC Development Funding Policy. And according to the ACB Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Noor, there is the potential for further funding that could amount to as much as $850,000 from the country’s government and sponsorship agreements from domestic and international businesses eager to ride the AFP wave of Afghanistan success.

who finished with figures of 3/17 from his four overs. Karthik, on the other hand, continued and hit a six off the last ball to finish off the innings. Earlier, Evin Lewis continued his fine form as he took flight from the first over. Lewis slashed hard to hit a six over deep backward point off Mitchell Johnson in the first over showing his intentions. Harbhajan Singh started well by scalping in-form Lendl Simmons (0), who was lured into short pitched delivery and got caught at deep midwicket. Lewis meanwhile continued his onslaught, going all out against pacer Johnson, whose first two overs went for 23. The Trinidadian then took on Harbhajan and overall piled on 62 runs off 46 balls, including six boundaries and four sixes to score his second half-century of the tournament. Lewis was supported well by Darren Bravo (14) and 22-yearold Yannick Ottley (40 not out). Ottley too came good towards the end hitting two fours and sixes each to take the Caribbean IANS side past the 150-mark.
It’s Tendulkar vs Dravid NEW DELHI: Two modern day greats of the game — Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid — will be up against each other for the last time as both the batsman will hang their boots from the format after the Champions League Twenty20 final at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Sunday. Rajasthan Royals will play their inaugural CLT20 final against the 2011 edition champions after defeating Chennai Super Kings and Trinidad and Tobago, respectively, in the semifinals. Indians’ Tendulkar and Royals skipper Dravid had, both, announced earlier that this would be their final T20 season. Dravid had retired from international cricket at the beginning of 2012 while Tendulkar, who retired from ODI cricket last December, still plays in Tests. IANS
Pakistan drop Hafeez Shahid HASHMI
LAHORE: Pakistan Saturday dropped out-of-form opener Mohammad Hafeez (right) from the 12-man squad to play a Test series against South Africa in the United Arab Emirates this month, the South Asian country’s cricket body said. The series starts in Abu Dhabi on October 14, with the second Test in Dubai from October 23. The 32-year-old, Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain, has scored just 102 in his last five Tests. He managed 43 in a 3-0 Test defeat in South Africa in February and scored only 59 in the two-Test series against Zimbabwe last month. Misbah-ul Haq was last week retained as Test and one-day captain. Three players will be added to the squad after a three-day practice match between Pakistan ‘A’ and South Africa in Sharjah starting from October 8. Pakistan and South Africa will also play five one-day and two Twenty20 internationals, for which squads will be named later, the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement. Pakistan, who are without a chief selector, left out batsmen Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shahzad and Shan Masood, but they still have a chance of making the larger squad, which so far only has one opener in Khurram Manzoor. Paceman Mohammad Irfan, at 7ft
1in the tallest cricketer to play at international level, earned a Test recall despite an unimpressive two-match stint in South Africa earlier this year when he took just one wicket. Pakistan looked set to ploy a spindominated attack against South Africa with the inclusion of 34-year-old leftarmer Zulfiqar Babar, Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman.
Umar Amin, 24, was also recalled after failing to impress in four Tests in 2010. He will lead Pakistan ‘A’ in the practice match. Moyes hails star Januzaj Jason MELLOR
SUNDERLAND: David Moyes insists he’s relaxed over the future of Adnan Januzaj (right) after the teenage midfielder marked his full Premier League debut with both goals as Manchester United fought back to win 2-1 at Sunderland. Januzaj’s representatives have resumed talks over an improved new deal for the 18year-old, after negotiations stalled following the departure from Old Trafford of Alex Ferguson earlier this year. The dual nationality Belgian and Albanian prospect’s contract expires at the end of the season, with his agent claiming interest from a string of top clubs all over Europe. However, Moyes is confident Januzaj -- who the FA are aware is also eligible for England on residency grounds -- will pledge his long-term future to the champions, avoiding a repeat of the way the club lost midfielder Paul Pogba to Juventus in 2012. “I’m not too worried about that (contract situation) because every young boy wants to play for Manchester United,” said Moyes. “If I was a young player, I don’t see anywhere better to
play, we’re a club that promotes young players and I’m a manager who does that. “If I was the dad of a young boy who was good enough to play at this level, I could see
there was a chance of getting in our team. That’s part of my remit.” Januzaj scored twice in the space of six minutes after the break to send United back into
the top half of the table as the Premier League goes into the international break. Former Everton manager Moyes added: “I remember giving Wayne Rooney his debut, and Adnan is in that quality, he’s a top top player. “I would have played him two or three weeks ago but for certain reasons with us picking up injuries. I didn’t want to go with him too early but today was the right time and it was hard to stop him.” Januzaj has the choice of several countries he can represent although that is unlikely given his stated aim of playing for Albania. Moyes added: “He’s going to be a great talent, a special talent and he showed that with his goals and his ability on the ball. “We’ll keep his feet on the ground -- we had him in the reserves last Monday. We’ll make sure he’s a very humble boy who works hard, but we know we’ve got a really exciting talent. “I think with his international situation there’s three or four countries he could play for. There’s an eligibility for England that the FA are aware of.” England manager Roy Hodgson later confirmed that he
Barça rout Valladolid KIERAN CANNING: Barcelona continued their storming start to La Liga as they came from behind to beat Valladolid 4-1 and register an eighth win in eight games. Real Madrid, meanwhile, remain five points behind but needed two injury time goals from Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo to win 3-2 away to Levante. Barca were without World Player of the Year Lionel Messi due to a thigh injury, but his absence wasn’t noticed thanks to another fanstastic performance by Neymar.
Javi Guerra had headed Valladolid into a shock 10th minute lead, but Alexis Sanchez responded with a stunning strike just four minutes later to level. Neymar then took over as he fed Cristian Tello, who in turn cut the ball back for Xavi to make it 2-1 just after the break. The Brazilian was involved again in the third goal as he released Sanchez to slot home his second of the evening 25 minutes from time. Sanchez returned the favour six

minutes later to allow Neymar to register his third Barcelona goal. And the Chilean refuted suggestions that it is easier for he and Neymar to express themselves without Messi. “Neymar plays like Neymar, everyone has their own style of play,” Sanchez told Gol TV. “Messi is distinct. They are two different players. I don’t think you can say we have more freedom when Messi isn’t playing. When he isn’t there we have more work to do because playing with Messi is easy.” Meanwhile, Real also had to come from behind, but were made to work far harder for the three points as they salvaged their faltering La Liga title hopes with two late goals at the Ciutat de Valencia. With Carlo Ancelotti’s men trailing 2-1 entering stoppage time, Morata slotted home from close range before Ronaldo’s effort deflected in off the inside of the post with virtually the last kick of the game to hand Madrid victory. Baba Diawara had fired the hosts into a deserved lead 12 minutes after the break, only for Sergio Ramos to level four minutes later. Nabil El Zhar then thought he had handed Joaquin Caparros’ men all three points with a fine finish four minutes from time before the late drama. “The victory was very important because it was a very difficult game,” said Ancelotti.

When asked if the 18-yearold could one day play for England, Hodgson, who was appearing on BBC1’s Match of the Day as a pundit, said: “Yeah down the line if he becomes naturalised or if he becomes a homegrown product. “He’s been with United for a long period of time and of course that discussion will have to be seriously debated before we start naturalising players. “There’s no doubt that he’s a real talent and we have our eyes on him but a lot will have to be discussed.” Sunderland took an early lead at the Stadium of Light through midfielder Craig Gardner as they threatened to condemn the Old Trafford club to three consecutive league defeats for the first time in AFP almost 12 years.
Brendan Rodgers demands more from deadly duo LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists Luis Suarez (right) and Daniel Sturridge (below) can get even better after his in-form strikers inspired the Reds to a 3-1 win against Crystal Palace.
