T tangle remains messy Not many in the State believe a quick decision on Telangana is possible. Leaders of both the ruling party and opposition suspect the current flurry of activities is a charade to give hope to voters so that the Congress does well in the panchayat polls. DIGVIJAY SINGH, WHO RECENTLY TOOK OVER AS IN-CHARGE OF PARTY AFFAIRS IN AP, SAID A DECISION ON THE CONTENTIOUS ISSUE WAS IN THE FINAL STAGE.

T

he Congress on Saturday is seen to have stepped up its efforts to untangle the complex issue of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. But TRS leaders back home are not optimistic, reports say. Party in-charge of AP affairs, Digvijay Singh’s visit to Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi was to submit a report of his brief visit to the State recently to assess the mood and opinions of various leaders. Not many attach much importance to the visit. Digvijay Singh, who recently took over as in-charge of party affairs in the southern state, said in Hyderabad on Monday

last a decision on the contentious issue was in the final stage. But unlike his predecessors, he had not set a deadline for the decision. Now, it is said that the Congress core commit-

tee at its meeting next week is likely to deliberate the issue and take a final decision, party sources said. “We don’t believe Congress much,” the cryptic comment of

T-JAC leader Kodandaram spells it out well. Digvijay Singh has already asked AP Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, deputy chief minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and State Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana to submit a roadmap on the strategy to be adopted by the government and the party if the decision is taken either way. Satyanarayana called on Digvijay Singh in the national capital to discuss the Telangana issue. The State Congress chief

also met Central ministers from the State and the leaders from Telangana and Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and Andhra regions) to elicit their views. Seemandhra leaders, meanwhile, have decided to keep their silence and see the developments. Minister of State for railways Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy said two more districts should be merged with the four districts of Rayalaseema to create Greater Rayalaseema. Congress MP Sai Pratap also conveyed to Digvijay Singh that the State’s division would not be acceptable if the interests of Rayalaseema region were not taken care of. Kotla is in favour of strengthening a united AP. Congress leader from Telangana Mohammed Ali Shabbir told reporters after meeting Digvijay Singh that the party would take a decision very soon. “He did not say when but said it will be very soon.”

Cop runs flesh trade, arrested

A constable, whose interests lay in matters other than policing, is now in prison, accused of running a prostitution ring. Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com

C

onstable B Kalyan, 37, of Moghalpurara police station has been placed under arrest. The action followed the complaint of a 26-year-old woman who accused the cop of coercing her to run a beauty parlour and under its cover, the flesh trade. Inspector of Bowenpally, RB Rangaiah who recorded the arrest said the constable has also accumulated many other charges with his wanton behaviour. The complainant, P Shamla, came from Visakhapatnam in 2009 in search of a job. She came in contact with the constable

who had allegedly given her to understand that he is unmarried and they could live together. Kalyan is in fact married and has two children. Kalyan rented a house in Dilsukhnagar, and according to Shamala, after a while, he began to tell her there was money in flesh trade and he would protect her if she runs a brothel. It is not clear if the complainant was a willing partner because the case stated that he arranged for a few more girls and began the business. Shamala was taking care of the flesh shelter. But local people turned out to be vigilant and objected to the activities. The duo shifted the operations to DV Colony in Secunderabad.

It turns out that Shamala panicked when she knew the constable is indeed married and his wife has smelled the goingson. She moved Kalyan’s superiors. Surprise checks of the man’s ‘live-in’ place proved the allegations true. Police raid led to the arrest of Shamala and some customers. The constable was away and he managed to keep off. After Shamala came out of jail, Kalyan is said to have harassed her again to begin the business. She says she refused but the constable forcibly took her to a place where some other policemen were invited to sexually assault her till she agreed to do his bidding. The complainant says she

managed to escape the place and lodge the police complaint. The constable was found to have been guilty of many counts and he was first placed under

suspension and later arrested. Many complaints against him such as objectionable behaviour, beating up people and extortion are pending.

Marital litigants made to run around courts Despite the law saying all property matters pertaining to a marital dispute will be judged by Family Court, many complain that they are asked to go to Civil Court where property matters can take years.

ALEENA ALICE

aleena.t@postnoon.com

L

aw is too serious a matter to be left to the judiciary is a tongue-in-cheek comment of a wit. But sometimes a wit brings the wisdom the wise do not see. Call it incidental or deliberate, the penchant of the Family Court to refer all matters on property of the disputed couples to the Civil Court is giving moments of despair to litigant couples. The law was amended long ago making all property disputes connected with a marital discord where husband and wife are involved will be decided by the Family Court. This is a well thought-out law, point out senior advocates. It is because property division of a divorcing couple is to be seen

in the context of their situation and in relation to the children they have. It is not simply a property dispute. There have been several instances when petitioners were made to shuttle between the Family Court and Civil Court in matters related to property disputes among families. Recently, a 55-year-old widow identified as Bijji Rama Lakshmi was left homeless after the Family Court where she filed the petition dismissed her case and asked her to approach the Civil Court instead. Rama Lakshmi approached the Family Court with a petition that her husband’s second wife was trying to take over her property by forging a gift deed. However, the Family Court dismissed her case without weighing the evidence of the complainant and also did not consider the grounds urged by the counsel for complainant in the petition. She was then asked to take her case to the Civil

Court. Even the Civil Court did not entertain her case and she could not help but see her own house taken over by some other person. A circular passed by the High Court in 1999 states that any case pertaining to property disputes in the family should be taken over by the Family Court and not the Civil Court. According to Section 9 of the

THE LAW STATES

S

ection 8 of the Family Court Act clearly barred the jurisdiction of the Civil Court stating, “No district court or any subordinate court shall try any suit where if a particular property is owned by both husband and wife or is only owned by husband alone or wife alone, they can file a suit or proceeding before the Family Court.”

Civil Procedure Code, “If any suit is either expressly or impliedly barred by any law, the Civil Court cannot try such suit. All other civil suits can be entertained by the Civil Court.” Senior advocates handling cases in Family Court bemoan the tendency to refer all matters touching property of disputing couples to Civil Court and call it skewed justice. “It’s not right to add to the misery of the unfortunate couple that seek Family Court help. They undergo a lot of trauma and asking them to go to the Civil Court where only property matters, not marital discord, is taken up is unjust to say the

least,” said a woman lawyer, who read out a list of cases where this has happened. Lack of understanding of the jurisdiction is resulting in such inconveniences caused to public, says advocate Gopal Krishna Kalanadhi. “Not many advocates and judges are aware of the circular passed by the High Court and about various sections and acts in the Family Court. Because of this problem, several poor people, especially women, are being victimised in the hands of advocates or judiciary. It is high time the Central government intervene and bring amendment to Family Courts Act, 1984.”

amWire, an upcoming Bangalore-based classic rock band consisting of five school-going students from National Public School, performed recently at the Yacht Club in Sanjeevaiah Park. The gig was put up as part of the ongoing Deloitte Monsoon Regatta 2013. The young band, consisting of Nishant (15) on vocals and keyboard; Adesh (15) on lead guitar; Krish (15) lead on rhythm guitar; Atharv (15) on drums and

Nikhil (14) on bass took the crowd by surprise when they sang covers of songs by Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, The Beatles and The Scorpions. The audience they played for were the participants of the Yacht Competition, and the parents and the passersby at the park enjoyed the performance put up by the young rockers. Postnoon caught up with the young lads on their new love. Talking about the band, Nikhil said, “Our band happened very accidentally when we tried performing together on Teachers’

Day at school. Atharv’s father, who was working for Accenture, invited us to play there and we took up the opportunity. That day we sang to a crowd that was in their thirties, and they

enjoyed it.” “Since then, we never looked back. We have got lot of compliments,” added Nishant. Krish added, “We would like to perform as long as we enjoy

doing it without affecting our studies.” Not all the band members have formal training in music. “We all practice at out teacher’s place once in a week for four hours,” they added. Talking about the reaction of their families, Adesh said, “I am actually surprised that none of our parents had any problem when we wanted to tour and sing. They are very encouraging and let us do what we wanted to. We study hard and work on our education as well. This helps to keep our parents calm.” Nikhil added, “When we got an opportunity to perform in Hyderabad, we were very excited. Suheim Sheikh saw one of our gig’s videos and invited us here. The crowd response could have been better, but we enjoyed ourselves here.” The lads plan to stick on for a few years and hope to make it large in the music industry.

Serial blasts at Bodh Gaya temple leave 2 injured PATNA: Indian police reported multiple lowintensity blasts at the Bodh Gaya Buddhist temple complex on Sunday, saying two people had been wounded but the temple was safe. Buddhists from all over the world visit the site in eastern Bihar state as it is believed to house the tree under which the Buddha reached enlightenment. “The holy bodhi tree is safe and there is no damage to it,” Bihar police chief Abhayanand told AFP. Senior police official Ravinder Kumar said “six low-intensity serial blasts took place early this morning, including four in the temple premises and two outside”. A seventh bomb was found and defused near the temple’s celebrated 80-ft-tall statue of the Buddha, Kumar told AFP. District police official NH Khan told AFP that

“additional security forces were deployed” and added the two wounded are believed to be Tibetan monks. Eyewitness and former local legislator Sarbajeet Kumar said he was on his daily morning

I realised that something bad had happened and ran for shelter,” he told local reporters. Police said they were probing the explosions. Attacks on Buddhists are rare in India but there have been tensions

in the wider region recently following clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The Bodh Gaya complex, 110 km south of the state capital Patna, is one of the earliest Buddhist temples still standing in India and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. It houses the holy bodhi tree as well as the giant Mahabodhi statue of Buddha, and multiple shrines marking the places where he is believed to have spent time after his enlightenment in 531 BC. The complex attracts visitors from around the world during the peak tourist season from October to March. After his meditations beneath the tree, Buddha is said to have devoted the rest of his life to teaching and he founded an order of monks before dying aged 80.

siana Airlines is one of South Korea’s two major airlines, along with Korean Air. Asiana won the prestigious Airline Of The Year award in 2010 by Skytrax. It also won the ‘Best Overall Airline in the World’ award from the Business Traveler magazine in 2012. Additionally, Asiana is one of only seven airlines rated as ‘five-star’ by Skytrax.

February 12, 2009: A Continental Connection flight crashed into a house as it was preparing to land at the Buffalo, New York airport. All 49 passengers and crew onboard the Bombardier Dash 8 were killed, as was one person on the ground. Safety regulators determined it was caused by pilot error.

August 27, 2006: A Delta Connection flight crashed on takeoff in Lexington, Kentucky after the pilot lined up on the wrong runway, which was too short for the Bombardier Challenger 600. The captain, flight attendant and all 47 passengers were killed. The co-pilot survived with serious injuries.

December 19, 2005: An amphibious plane bound for the Bahamas crashed into a shipping channel shortly after takeoff from the Miami Seaplane Base, killing all 18 passengers and two crew members on board. Safety regulators determined that Chalk’s Ocean Airways failed to identify and repair fatigue cracks in the right wing, which caused it to fall off during flight.

SAN FRANCISCO: An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 passenger jet crashed and burst into flames Saturday as it landed short of the runway at San Francisco International Airport, killing two people and injuring 181 others. Investigators said they could not yet offer an explanation for the crash of Flight 214, which had 307 people — 291 passengers and 16 crew — on board

when it left Seoul. But images appeared to suggest the aircraft struck a rocky area at the water’s edge short of the runway at the airport — a major international hub, especially for flights to and from Asia. Pictures showed the tail detached from the fuselage, and the landing gear had also sheared off. “At this time there are two fatalities,” the city’s fire chief Joanne Hayes-White said. One person was still unac-

counted for, officials said, revising downwards an earlier estimate of dozens. The remainder of those on board were uninjured. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said there was no indication that terrorism was to blame for the crash. Survivor Elliott Stone told CNN that as it came in to land, it appeared the plane “sped up, like the pilot knew he was short.” “And then the back end just hit and flies up in the air and everybody’s head goes up to

the ceiling.” Video footage showed the jet on its belly surrounded by firefighters with debris scattered on the runway and in the surrounding area. “It looked normal at first... the wheels were down,” an unidentified man who witnessed the crash told CNN. “It just hit (the seawall) like that and the whole thing just collapsed immediately. “It just pancaked immediately. The wings caught on the tarmac.” A team of experts

from the National Transportation Safety Board was heading to San Francisco to investigate the crash landing. “Everything is on the table at this point,” NTSB chairwoman Debbie Hersman told reporters in Washington when asked if pilot error was to blame. “We have to gather the facts before we reach any conclusions.” One dramatic photo tweeted by a survivor showed people streaming out of the jet follow-

October 19, 2004: An American Connection flight struck trees and crashed while approaching the runway in Kirksville, Missouri. The captain, copilot and 11 passengers were killed while two passengers escaped with serious injuries. Safety regulators cited pilot fatigue and “unprofessional behavior” as major factors.

December 8, 2005: A Southwest Airlines flight slipped off a snow-covered runway in Chicago struck a car on a nearby road, killing a child and injuring four other people in the vehicle. Of the 103 passengers and crew members onboard the Boeing 737, 18 sustained minor injuries. Safety regulators determined pilot error was a major factor in the crash.

January 8, 2003: A US Airways Express flight crashed shortly after takeoff in Charlotte, North Carolina. The two crew members and 19 passengers on board were killed and one person on the ground was hurt. Safety regulators determined it lost pitch control because the Beechcraft 1900D wasn’t properly weighted and cited the operator, Air Midwest, for improper procedures.

November 11, 2001: An American Airlines flight bound for the Dominican Republic crashed into a residential neighborhood shortly after takeoff from New York’s JFK airport. All 260 passengers and crew members on board the Airbus A300 were killed, as were five people on the ground. Safety regulators determined it was caused by a combination of mechanical problems and pilot error.

FELL OUT AND IT WAS THING I’VE SEEN’ ing the crash-landing. An inflatable slide was at the front entrance. Other emergency exits also appeared to have been used. “I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I’m ok,” the passenger, David Eun, wrote on Twitter. But another photo from above showed a more distressing scene, with most of the roof of the plane missing and the cabin seating area charred by fire. The aircraft’s wings were still attached. “I saw some passengers bleeding and being loaded onto an ambulance,” another passenger, Chun Ki-Wan, told YTN TV in Seoul. “Everything seemed to be normal before it crash-landed.”

FB EXECUTIVES SWITCH FLIGHT, AVOID CRASH WASHINGTON: Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and other executives at the social media giant escaped potential disaster when they switched to a United flight returning from a Korean business trip. They were earlier booked on the Asiana Air flight that crash landed at San Francisco International Airport Saturday morning and killed two people. “I was on another flight from Korea at the exact same time,” USA Today quoted Sandberg as tweeting. “We are ok. My friend on that flight is ok, too.”

Stone said he feared for the flight crew seated in the back of the plane, which took off in Shanghai, stopped in Seoul and then headed to the United States. “They were sitting in the back end and got hammered because we landed short. And then they all fell out and it was just the most terrible thing I’ve seen,” he said. The airport was closed immediately after the incident but two runways later reopened. Some flights were diverted to Los Angeles. Among those on board were 77 Koreans, 141 Chinese, 61 US citizens, and one Japanese national, Asiana said in a statement.

San Francisco General Hospital said it was treating 34 patients, five of them in critical condition. Local media cited multiple witnesses who said the plane had approached the runway at an awkward angle, with several onlookers saying they then heard a loud bang. “You heard a pop and you immediately saw a large, brief fireball that came from underneath the aircraft,” Anthony Castorani, who saw the crash from a nearby hotel, told CNN. The accident site was covered in white foam used by firefighters, with at least six fire trucks at the scene.

ASIANA ACCIDENTS July 26, 1993, Asiana Airlines Boeing 737– 500 crashed in poor weather about 4 kilometres short of the runway in Mokpo while making its third landing attempt. Two of the six crew members and 66 of the 110 passengers on board were killed. November 11, 1998, An Asiana Airlines Boeing 747-400 attempting a U-Turn in the gate area of Anchorage International Airport embedded its winglet into an Aeroflot Ilyushin Il-62M tail. No one was injured. Asiana was subsequently sued by Aeroflot. The Il-62M is parked at Anchorage with the Asiana winglet still embedded in its tail August 19, 2004, Asiana Airlines Boeing 747 flying into Los Angeles International Airport from Incheon, South Korea, had a nearcollision with Southwest Airlines Boeing 737, as a result of an air-traffic control error. The pilot of the Asiana flight aborted the landing, saving both planes. April 29, 2009, an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777, flying between SeattleTacoma International Airport and Incheon Airport, with 179 passengers and 16 crew aboard made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from SEA after fire and smoke was seen coming from the left engine. The plane dumped fuel over Puget Sound before landing safely around 3:30 pm at Seatac. A compressor stall was later deemed to be the cause of the incident as of May 4, 2009. July 28, 2011, Asiana Airlines Cargo Flight 991 bound for Shanghai from Incheon, operated by a Boeing 747-400F, crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Jeju Island after reporting a fire in the cargo compartment.

COMMENT SUNDAY, JULY 7, 2013

EDITORIALS POSITIVES IN THE eco balance An upward trend in the tiger population in NagarjunsagarSrisailam Tiger Reserve, the largest tiger reserve in India comes like a waft of fresh air in the otherwise gloomy news scenario. This is a result, in part, of the effort being put in by forest rangers in an area that is a major attraction for many tourists and pilgrims because of the many reservoirs and temples in Srisailam, and consequent chaos. Presence of man in the wild always results in the loss of animals. Incidents of wild animals being struck by vehicles are a regular happening. Elephant dung has been found to possess plastic paper! The scientific approach being adopted is paying rich dividends. In addition to the pugmark collection, CCTV cameras are being used to track tiger movement. The forest department has installed CCTV cameras at various habitats in the Nallamala forest near Chinamanthanala, Daddanala, Palutla, Chintala Bailu, Tummalabailu villages. Though attacks by tigers on cattle and man is a problem that requires solution, the fact that the tiger count has increased from the 2011 figure of 60 to almost 75 this year is a healthy sign since it all concerns the pressures on the natural resource that forest is. A more conducive environment will only improve the ecological balance. It is found that the leopard population is also on the rise. In the previous census, 90 to 110 leopards were found in the reserve and the latest information reveals that the numbers could reach 130. While the wildlife census may provide satisfaction for those who care for and believe in co-existence, long-term gains of the results of this are many. The census figures indicate that natural calamities will reduce as a result of restoration of nature.

BET ON AP TO LEAD IN GAMBLING

From the hip SYED SHOAIB

N

ational Crime Records Bureau data compiled by think tank PRS Legislative Research shows that Andhra Pradesh reports the highest number of 2,67,718 gambling cases in the country from 2007-12. Madhya Pradesh came second with a distant 1,14,828 and Maharashtra third with 65,622 cases of gambling. Arunachal Pradesh and Lakshadweep did not have any gambling cases, while Delhi reported 2,177 cases during the period. The Constitution of India specifies that laws related to gambling can only be enacted by state legislative assemblies. Most states have based their anti-gambling laws on the lines of an 1867 Central law. Most states do not allow gambling, but allow betting on horse races. However, there are states like Goa and Sikkim, which have legalised gambling by passing specific laws to that effect in their legislative assembly. Andhra Pradesh has report-

ed an increased number of gambling cases, according to the State Crime Records Bureau. Anantapur, Krishna, Vijayawada, West Godavari, East Godavari, Kurnool and Prakasam districts are notorious for their gambling dens, with the maximum number of cases reported from these districts. Hundreds of crores are changing hands here in cockfights, teen patti (a game of three cards) and other unauthorised gambling practices, in violation of the AP Gaming Act. Under the Andhra Pradesh Gaming Act of 1974, most forms of gambling are illegal within the State. However, horse racing, rummy and Staterun lottery are allowed within Andhra Pradesh. The State has recorded a fair amount of cases of arrest and/or fines, but the fines tend to be small and typically only repeat offenders of those who run gambling houses receive more serious punishment. A total of 87,988 cases of gambling were reported in 2012 as against 83,533 in 2011 with an increase of more than 5,000 cases. Anantapur tops the list with around 11,199 followed by Krishna with 10,207 and West Godavari, with 9,962 cases. For an activity to be construed as gambling, each of the following three elements has to

be proved in most cases: skill, uncertainty and consideration. Interestingly, in many parts of Andhra Pradesh, the local police, in connivance with the gambling den organisers and clubs, turn a blind eye. Cockfighting, pigeon racing and teen patti are common violations in coastal Andhra districts like Krishna and Godavari. Police raids and case registrations maximise during the Sankranti season, when inci-

THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA SPECIFIES THAT LAWS RELATED TO GAMBLING CAN ONLY BE ENACTED BY STATE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLIES. dents of violations are reported increasingly. In some cases even policemen have been caught red handed while playing cards, some on duty like in the West Godavari district. The Supreme Court in the landmark case State of Andhra Pradesh Vs VK Satyanarayana and others (1968 AIR 825 1968 SCR (2) 387) while looking into whether playing rummy in clubs and charging fee for the same can be construed as gambling observed:

“The game of rummy is not a game entirely of chance like the ‘three-card’ game mentioned in the Madras case to which we were referred. The ‘three card’ game, which goes under different names such as ‘flssh’, ‘brag’ etc, is a game of pure chance. Rummy, on the other hand, requires a certain amount of skill because the fall of cards has to be memorised and the building up of rummy requires considerable skill in holding and discarding cards. We cannot, therefore, say that the game of rummy is a game of entire chance. It is mainly and preponderantly a game of skill.” In AP Mathur's book Commentaries on Gambling Acts in India, he has broached on The Andhra Pradesh (Telangana Area) Gambling Act, 1305 and The Andhra Pradesh (Andhra Area) Gaming Act, 1930. Fuelled by the 140-year-old Public Gaming Act, which punishes public gambling, and the Information Technology Act, which requires service-providers to crack down on online gambling, law enforcement agencies have so far targeted bookies and companies with criminal and civil lawsuits. The hue and cry over IPL and spot fixing might seem unnecessary to gambling-prone Andhra Pradesh!

Demand for packed food as prices soar Expenditure on fresh fruits and vegetables, per month, has gone up by four times to what it used to be five years ago. NEW DELHI: Over 58 per cent of people in the middle and low income groups have switched to packaged food items like tomato puree, ketchup and fruit juices owing to the rise in the prices of fresh fruits and vegetables, said a survey released here Saturday. “Rising prices of fruits and vegetables” was conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) and it interviewed over 5,000 people from the middle and lower income groups in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Dehradun. “Over 58 per cent have switched over to precooked and ready-to-eat food items like tomato puree and packaged juice to keep the kitchen budget intact as the fear of a bad monsoon has hiked the

vegetables and fruits prices by 300 per cent,” said the survey. As per the survey, in the last three years, “the average salary of the respondents had gone up by 10-15 per cent while the prices of vegetables have risen by 250-300 per cent”. As a result, over 88 per cent of the people surveyed found it tough to manage their household budgets. DS Rawat, secretary general of Assocham, said that almost all vegetables and fruits in the market have become costly due to the early onset of monsoon rains.

THE SURVEY NOTED THAT FRUITS HAVE ‘ALSO BECOME A LUXURY’ FOR THE LOWER MIDDLE CLASS WHO PREFER TO BUY A LITRE OF FRUIT JUICE THAN A KILO OF FRUITS. “The prices of most of the widely consumed vegetables have shot up during the last two weeks with the early onset of monsoon rains. Prices of

brinjal, onion, cucumber and tomato besides fruits have sky rocketed,” he said. The survey noted that fruits have “also become a luxury” for the lower middle class and they are now preferring to buy a litre of fruit juice than a kilo of fresh fruits. Similarly, the demand for tomato puree and ketchup has risen. “The main categories of packaged food are canned/dried processed food, frozen processed food, meal replacement products and condiments.” IANS

IRDA mull service tax waiver KOLKATA: India’s insurance regulator IRDA Saturday said it is holding talks with the union finance ministry for waiving the service tax on the savings part of life insurance premium. There are demands from the country’s insurance industry that the central government should not levy service

tax on the total amount of life insurance premium as apart from mortality charges, a portion of the premium goes towards investing in savings funds. “Some people asked why would there be a service tax on savings segment of the premium. So there is a dialogue going on with the finance min-

istry... let us see,” Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) member (Life) Sudhin Roy Chowdhury told media persons on the sidelines of 6th ICC Insurance Summit. Chowdhury, however, said the dialogue was still in a very lucid stage. Several life insurers earlier said the central

government should revisit the move of levying of service tax on premium in order to boost life insurance business in India. Chowdhury also said he was hopeful that the sector would post a double-digit business growth this fiscal after experiencing a slowdown during the last three IANS years.

MANDELA FAMILY FEUD

S Africa's shocking 'soap opera' As the 94-year-old Mandela fights for his life, a legal battle among feuding relatives over his eventual resting place has descended into a messy public soap opera. Charlotte Plantive and Johannes Myburgh Agence France-Presse

JOHANNESBURG: A grave-digging dispute has added to the bitter family feuding, over sex, money and power, among Nelson Mandela’s heirs which has set South Africans on edge as the anti-apartheid icon lies critically ill in hospital. The Nobel peace laureate is famous the world over for spend-

But as the 94-year-old Mandela fights for his life, a legal battle among feuding relatives over his eventual resting place has descended into a messy public soap opera. Mandela’s three deceased children were reburied Thursday after 15 family members, including his three daughters and wife Graca Machel, won an urgent court order against Mandela’s oldest grandson, Mandla. The family said the 39-yearold Mandla, who is the clan’s tra-

Pretty messy Mandla Mandela talks to journalists during a press conference at his home a day after a final court hearing cleared the way to remove the remains of the former leader’s children from his property in Mvezo, the birthplace of Nelson Mandela. ditional chief, had moved the remains from Mandela’s childhood home in 2011 without the consent of the rest of the family. Shortly before the remains were re-buried, Mandla, in a nationally televised news conference Thursday, launched a tirade against the rest of the family. He accused his aunt, the antiapartheid hero’s daughter Makaziwe, of trying to “sow divisions and destruction”. After saying he wouldn’t air the family’s “dirty linen” in public, Mandla went on to say his brother Mbuso had “impregnated my wife”. He also said his two other brothers were born out of wedlock. The dispute has earned the Mandelas the doubtful accolade of being seen as South Africa’s Ewings, a comparison with US soap opera Dallas which recounts a wealthy family’s intrigues and conspiracies. “Mandla Mandela has become the veritable JR Ewing of the Mandela family,” internet website Daily Maverick wrote, comparing him to the show’s anti-hero. The grave dispute touches on Mandela’s own eventual resting place. In the past, he had said he wanted to be buried in Qunu, his rural childhood village and retirement home in the country’s rolling southern hills. The former statesman’s parents lie here, as do Mandela’s three children, who died in 1948, 1969 and 2005. His family argued Mandla wanted to change Mandela’s gravesite to Mvezo and so moved the children’s remains to stake

his claim for a new burial site. South Africans have reacted with shock at their disagreements. “The public is trying to give them space to run their affairs but they are busy displaying their dirty linen for all to see,” wrote Michael Mokoena in a letter to local daily The Times. “I should think they can come together and try to resolve this matter and not take each other to court,” a woman named Johanna told AFP. The tiff has also elicited comments from the country’s moral compass and another Nobel peace laureate, Desmond Tutu. “Please, please, please may we think not only of ourselves. It’s almost like spitting in Madiba’s face,” Tutu pleaded in a statement, referring to Mandela by his clan name. Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj called the dispute “regrettable” and urged the Mandela family to resolve their differences “as amicably and as soon as possible”. But the scandal does not stop there. Mandla, 39, has had two

traditional marriages interdicted by his estranged first wife, and is locked in land dispute with his neighbours. He has also disappointed in parliament, where he serves under the ruling African National Congress, the movement his grandfather led. Another lawmaker, Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, was convicted of kidnapping a youth in 1980 who her bodyguards later killed. A court convicted her of fraud in 2003, and a posh private school almost had her assets seized in May this year over $10,000 (7,800 euro) debt over a relative’s school fees. The Mandela family, which includes the anti-apartheid hero’s three daughters, 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, avoided the media spotlight during his political career. But after his last public appearance in 2010 some seemed to find their family name’s value irresistible. While Mandela always strictly limited commercial use of his name to charities, four of his

grandchildren set up the clothing brand LWTF Clothing, an acronym for their grandfather’s famous autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. His eldest child Makaziwe and her daughter Tukwini later launched the “House of Mandela” wine label. In another episode that jars with the icon's image, two other granddaughters recounted their high-society life in a reality TV show, dubbed Being Mandela. Zenani and her half-sister Makaziwe made headlines this year trying to remove three directors Mandela appointed to the trust fund that holds the family fortune. At stake is the $1.7 million the icon has made through royalties of his autobiography and art works carrying his hand prints and prison number, 46664. The sisters accused the trustees, including respected lawyer George Bizos — a close friend who defended Mandela in the case that sent him to prison — of interfering in family affairs. The trustees told the court Mandela didn’t want his daughters to manage his affairs. AFP

INTERVIEW SUNDAY, JULY 7, 2013

Kris Gethin, the fitness trainer who has worked with Hrithik Roshan and Mahesh Babu, tells Postnoon about his journey in India, body building and the secret behind the physical change in both the superstars. HEMANTH KUMAR

hemanth.k@postnoon.com

“H

rithik Roshan’s jaw dropping transformation for his upcoming film Krrish 3 has an interesting beginning. Back in 2011, after the actor hurt his back while shooting for Agneepath, he was advised bed rest for several weeks. During this time, he put on several kilos and after he recovered, he found it impossible to fit into the suit designed for his role in Krrish 3. His entire body needed re-engineering and the person who would help Hrithik Roshan was 8,000 miles away. Meet Kris Gethin, a fitness trainer and one of the world’s most renowned transformation specialists, whose client list now spans from Hrithik Roshan to Mahesh Babu in South.

Pushing the limits

It’s been almost a year and a half since you came to India. Tell us about your journey so far. Hrithik Roshan had read my book — Body by Design and he was so impressed that he wanted me to get him into shape. He was advised to take eight weeks of bed rest by the doctors, but he couldn’t wait that long since he had a film to shoot. When I first met him, he was slowly recovering from two slipped discs. We started off with a lot of cardio exercises and crossfit workouts. More than anything else, he was extremely committed to DTP (Dramatic Transformation Principle), the programme I had designed for him and the results are there for everyone to see.

me that it wouldn’t work, because you are always advised to start with lighter weights, but I saw fantastic results through DTP. My muscles had a more three dimensional look and I was experiencing more fullness and density in my muscles. It is quite an intensive work out and requires full dedication for 12

What exactly is DTP and what led you to come up with this programme? Honestly, it was an accident (laughs). Back in 2005, I had sustained a lot of injuries and broke a lot of bones. There was a point where I couldn’t even lift free weights. So, I started working with higher repetitions and decided to increase the weights. People told

Pick

weeks.

Not everyone has the same body structure or strength for that matter. Do you suggest the same programme for everyone to attain a muscular physique? This programme is for everyone irrespective of their gender, but they’ll have to undergo the training within their barriers. The important part is to reach failure, a stage where your body gives up and cannot proceed any further. I have worked with plenty of clients including film actors and one of the most important aspect is to change their lifestyle completely. If you are committed, maintain consistency and punctuality and mentally strong, I cannot think of a reason why DTP won’t work.

You have worked with Hrithik Roshan and Mahesh Babu. Did they go through a same fitness program? Both of them went through a very similar fitness programme, although they don’t eat the same amount of food everyday. Hrithik has a faster metabolism rate and he eats eight meals a day, whereas Mahesh Babu eats seven times a day. Their diet

at the

consists of chicken, fish, spinach, oat meal, pasta, broccoli among many other things. I sincerely believe that both Mahesh and Hrithik are on top of their game both personally and professionally because they are very hard working and humble. In fact, I have got plenty of compliments for Mahesh Babu’s new look and people say that he looks ten years younger now.

In your website, you recommend a lot of supplements. Even those who go to the gym regularly, don’t take so many supplements. Supplements are extremely beneficial because they help you from in repairing the damage caused to muscles during workouts. People who don’t recommend supplements are either wrong or uneducated.

So what’s next? There’s a lot of motivation among people here, but there’s a lack of education in fitness. We are planning to organise an event named ‘Body Power’ in 2014 that will bring together the best of fitness trainers, celebrities and it’ll have plenty of educational seminars.

ART AND CULTURE SUNDAY, JULY 7, 2013

You can ‘Do It’

The art that you can eat

Featuring contributions by the likes of Amalia Pica, Cory Arcangel, Ryan Trecartin, Yoko Ono, and Lawrence Weiner, do it: the compendium is intended not only as a record of this historic project—which Obrist conceived with artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier in 1993—but as an iteration of the exhibition itself, with 80 new scores.

One food historian makes her living creating artworks that are also edible — from chocolate skulls and marzipan bees to frankincense sweets. Tasha Marks runs a boutique food company Animal Vegetable Mineral, creating unusual — and tasty — sculptures for parties, corporate events and festivals. She gets much of her inspiration from historical cookbooks.

Threat to art auctions Approval for Shanghai to open the mainland’s first free-trade zone, widely considered a fresh threat to Hong Kong’s position as a leading financial centre, may also be a big threat to Hong Kong in its growing competition with Shanghai for Asia’s art auction business. Shanghai government officials familiar with the situation said Christie’s will host its first mainland auction.

A tryst with puppetry

I

f it was not for her son’s interference, puppetry would still have remained nothing but a pass time hobby for Padmini Rangarajan. However, this was not so. She fancied teaching his son with the help of puppets and role play and it was him who passed on this information to his teachers and later got Padmini her first performance at her son’s school. Since then, she looked at puppetmaking and storytelling a more than a passing fancy. She started an institute aptly named Sphoorthi Theatre for Educational Puppetry, Art & Craft. Sphoorthi in Telugu means inspiration. “Apart from performing puppet shows, we at Sphoorthi provide a fun environment for the kids and help them learn. We also provide training for teachers to help them incorporate puppets into the lives of children. There are various projects adopted by us wherein we travel to rural areas and teach underprivileged children puppetry,” she says. Main objectives of Sphoorthi are to integrate puppetry into academics mainly for primary,

middle school children and also children with special needs and to promote social awareness about various issues through puppet plays and presentations.

Puppet show performances by Sphoorthi are mostly on themes such as female infanticide, child marriage, dowry deaths, sexual harassment and so on. “We are currently working on a show which has e-waste management as its theme. When we conduct workshops for kids, we make the curriculum in such a manner that at the end of the workshop, kids come on stage and put up their performance,” she says. According to Padmini, puppetry is a culmination of various elements including story-

telling, painting, hand-eye coordination and body language. “It requires a lot of patience and determination to master the skill of puppetry. One might be good at say writing a good story but not very good at presenting it in front of the audience. A course of puppetry helps you be master of all these parts of art. If you are looking at learning how to make puppets to entertain your kids then a one-day workshop will do otherwise mastering this art takes much more time and effort,” she explains.

Decorative art comes alive A

five-foot long ivory tusk, dating to the early 20th century traces the story of Lord Buddha in 43 small roundels, with the one at the bottom depicting his birth place Kapilavastu and the one at the tip his three wellknown postures, signifying his enlightenment. This is one of the 160 artefacts at the renovated Gallery of Decorative Arts in National Museum. Dormant for seven years, the revamped gallery was

inaugurated by Culture Chandresh Kumari Katoch and opened for public viewing. "I hope students from school and colleges will come to this gallery and cultivate an interest to know our rich history," Katoch said. India's decorative art is dominated by "alamkara" or ornamentation and the artefacts on display were once used for daily, ceremonial and religious purpose. They have been crafted from a

variety of materials like ivory, jade, ceramics, textile, wood, metal, glass, paper, leather and bones. "Each medium is represented by a group of seven or eight showcases to portray the diverse nature of artefacts and high quality craftsmanship," National Museum director general V. Venu pointed out. Gallery curator Anamika Pathak has meticulously classified the artefacts into three groups. IANS

Tree fungus lets current flow Sabine Sané, doctoral candidate in the research training group Micro Energy Harvesting at the Department of Microsystems Engineering of the University of Freiburg, has found a way to make a species of tree fungus useful for the production of electricity. Biofuel cells produce electricity that is environmentally friendly and conserves resources, for instance from organic waste material.

Insecticides can harm bees

A forest flourishes after a fire

Once upon a time all honeybees had to worry about were silly old bears. Now there may be some hard evidence that a new kind of insecticides called neonicotinoids could be weakening and killing bees. And since bees are critical to the production of more than a quarter of our food, we have to watch out.

The traditional wisdom is that today’s wildfires set the stage for tomorrow’s healthy forests. But researchers are coming to the conclusion that in a warmer world, with droughts and more wildfires, the traditional wisdom won’t always hold true. See the Yellowstone National Park, which lost a third of its forest land in a seemingly catastrophic series of wildfires of 1988. Twenty-five years later, the forests are making a stunning comeback.

T

he Ahuja Engineering Services (AES) has come up with green energy technology solutions to help the poultry and food processing industry in dealing with waste management and renewable energy generation. This technology is called High Rate Biomethanation. Through this solution they aim to help the industries dispose waste, creating environmental sustainability and offer an immediate alternative to power outages, diesel generating back-up systems and ever rising prices of LPG and other fuels. The company has begun working on the poultry industry and is working towards helping the farmers to save energy and reap benefits of regular litter disposal. Talking about their recent work, that is the changing poultry wasteto-energy, Shruti Ahuja, Director Technical, said, “Imagine an ammonia-free poultry farm, that not just converts its waste to energy, but also improves bird health, gets better egg production and saves sanitation costs that are otherwise incurred to treat accumulated waste. This model represents a proof of the entire waste-to-energy concept and urges farmers to incorporate this easy-to-operate and maintain technology to contribute to the energetic balance of the activities within their facilities.” Shruti along with her team, has set-up a demonstration model in Medak, AP to showcase the successful conversion of poultry litter into methane rich biogas. She adds, “With diminishing labour force and increasing menace of litter waste, poultry farms are turning to a renewable rescue — Biodegradable Waste to Energy.

Shruti Ahuja Poultry litter to energy comes in the form of a huge relief to the poultry community as it serves the dual purpose of regular waste disposal and energy generation for heat and

power. Unlike a number of renewable energy companies, AES relentlessly follows a distributive working model. Biogas generation from litter can make poultry farms selfsufficient in terms of discarding waste on a regular basis and replacing diesel and electricity board power, thereby becoming an economic asset.” Hyderabad-based engineering company AES has entered the largely unexplored poultry waste field in the energy sector in India. The company has been working on creating a perfect solution for poultry farms to deal with their unaddressed waste management issues. They are aiming at providing an in-farm product, which in addition to converting poultry litter into a reliable closed-loop source of power and heat, will also gen-

“Industries are gearing up for future times when solid waste management will become a regulatory norm and energy costs will follow a growing trend, AES is not just bullish on power from waste but also on the prospects of biogas upgradation to natural gas.” Natural gas equivalent will prove to be a cost-effective fuel for replacing unsubsidised LPG, diesel and furnace oil for commercial and industrial heating applications. This green energy on-site solution would be a great way to meet sustainability goals, improve profits and decrease industrial carbon footprint. We all know Hyderabad is almost synonymous with biryani. Firdaus, Taj Krishna’s authentic Indian restaurant, brings you variations of this much-loved preparation from all parts of the country. Enjoy this two-week long festival. M ANIL KUMAR

NIDHI BHUSHAN

A

biryani festival in Hyderabad is never a bad idea. Be it lunch or dinner, the flavourful rice preparation tops everyone’s list. Firdaus —which means paradise — has put together a twoweek long biryani festival that offers variations of biryanis from all parts of the country. From Kashmir’s traditional Yakhni Pulao to Mopla Fish Biryani from the heart of Kerala, the festival is rich with finger-licking good flavours.

nidhi.b@postnoon.com

Our biryani tour began with a virgin watermelon mojito. The fruity drink, which comprised watermelon juice along with a few pieces of fruit, was a refreshing start to a lip-smacking meal that was to follow. We started with a few starters that the restaurant offers. Jalapeno and cheese cutlet (a personal favourite), lamb seekh, layered and creamy paneer kebabs and chicken tikka kebabs were enough to get our appetites going. Even the papad and salad

platter, served on tiered plates, was a promising sign of good things ahead. Another dish that was served along with the celebrity biryanis was the yellow-khatti dal accompanied by fluffy, fresh phulkas. The phulka trolley is one of the USPs of the restaurant. Finally, let’s talk about the star of the show — the panIndian biryanis. The special biryani menu includes four varieties of vegetarian biryanis — priced at `495 each – and six

kinds of non-vegetarian ones – priced at `695 each. Among the vegetarian biryanis, the one that stood out was the Kathal Biryani (jackfruit biryani, enriched with ghee and saffron and cooked on dum). While the biryani might be a tad sweet because of the essence of the fruit, it is a musthave for those who like to try new and different things. It worked for me. Other vegetarian options included the Hyderabadi Subz Dum Biryani, Kabuli Biryani (Hyderabadi rice preparation with chana dal) and Kali Moti Biryani (black pea biryani). Among the non-veg biryanis, the Rampuri Chicken Biryani (fresh herb and green chilli spiced tender chicken cooked with rice on dum) is a musthave. Unlike the regular Hyderabadi style we are familiar with, this biryani was not spicy despite the chicken being marinated with green chilli. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bland either. It was flavourful and one can easily enjoy a generous portion of it. Even though the greencoloured chunky chicken might seem like an appetite killer at first, the Rampuri Chicken Biryani tells a different story once you bite into it. Kerala’s Mopla Fish Biryani (Kerala style mopla biryani with fish) is another dish you won’t regret spending on. With a hint of coconut oil used to fry the fish, the biryani oozes authentic flavours from God’s own country. The chef even used Kerala’s favourite broken rice to prepare this one. A tad spicy, the Mopla Fish Biryani is worth relishing. Then came the Yakhni Pulao, which is traditional Kashmiri mutton-rice preparation. Exactly like pulao, everything about the dish worked and blended perfectly — the meat, the spices and the rice. While the mutton was cooked tender, the finely sliced onion provided the crunchiness to the pulao. Again, it’s a musthave especially if you’re a fan of pulaos. Like me, even Firdaus kept the best for the last — the Royalla Talimpu (a combination of rice and fresh water prawns arranged in layers, sprinkled with herbs and saffron and cooked in a sealed pot). The spiciest and best of them all, the biryani exuded flavours from the heart of Andhra Pradesh. Cooked perfectly along with full deep-fried red chillies, the biryani was also a delight for the eyes — vegetarians have no idea about what they are missing! Needless to say, it’s a must-have and if you plan to order just one biryani, don’t think, just order the Royalla Talimpu. You will not regret it!

ingredient to add when — step-by-step or process cooking. Ulavacharu follows this style of cooking to provide authentic flavours.” The menu at Ulavacharu ranges from usual Andhra dishes like royyalu iguru (prawns starter) and tamato pappu (tomato dal) to Chinese dishes like fried rice and chicken manchurian. “Working in

the Ulavacharu kitchen is challenging as we have created our own dishes. We offer unique home-made recipes so that customers feel like they are eating festival food when

they dine here,” says chef Yadagiri, who has 20 years of cooking experience. Our culinary journey began with one of their signature dishes — the

ulavacharu kodi biryani (chicken biryani). Served on a banana leaf with whipped curd and curry, the biryani was cooked to perfection. One of the USPs of the biryani was that it wasn’t drowned in oil. The spice, the oil and the masala proportions were just enough to make for a satiating dish. If you’re in the mood for a quick biryani fix, the ulavacharu biryani is a must have. The next dish — a personal favourite — was the korameenu tandoori. Served along with salad and lemon slices, the long river fish is enough for two. Marinated with a combination of masalas and grilled later, the dish exuded a spicy, mustard flavour. The dish, which is one of the specials, is perfect for those who like it spicy. Then came the Raju gari kodi pulao, which was again one of the specials and for good reason. This flavourful rice preparation is already the hottest selling dish at Ulavacharu; a meal without its soothing effect would be incomplete. Served with a tangy chutney, the pulao is truly a treat. One of the most impressive aspects of Ulavacharu is the attention to detail. All the accompaniments such as curd, mint and tomato chutney, are fresh. One visit to the restaurant will ensure several others follow. No one can visit just once!

ucked away in one of the bylanes of Jubilee Hills, Ulavacharu — which means horse gram — promises authentic Andhra cuisine and much more. The 27-day-old restaurant has already bagged the tag of second best place in the City. “We didn’t expect it to become so popular so soon. We started with premises to accommodate around 60 people, but now, we have to expand. Customers have been pushing us to incorporate more tables; we are in the process of expanding the restaurant to a 120-seater,” says Kuchipudi Venkat, coowner of the restaurant. Brightly-lit, Ulavacharu is a great place to dine, especially for people who are sick of restaurants that fail because of the jarring background music. At Ulavacharu, there’s little to complain about. The service is good, the food is full of surprises and the ambience is perfect to enjoy a hearty meal. “Our target customer is one who loves home-cooked Andhra food. Most people these days don’t want to go through the trouble of cooking at home; they prefer dining out. We give them that option at Ulavacharu and the food served here is high in nutritional value too,” says Venkat. “The trick to cooking good food is to know what

There’s little that the pub goes wrong with — the waiters are warm, the food is finger-licking good and the drinks keep flowing till 12am. A great time is their USP.

The first thing one notices is the energy and the good music playing. For those like me, who enjoy their drinks on high stools, the pub is a great mood-setter. The bar at 10D, which is hard to miss, is located almost at the centre of the pub. To keep your spirits high, 10D normally has affordable Long Island Iced Tea, Mojito and

he principal shooting of Prabhas, Anushka and Rana-starrer Baahubali officially began yesterday near Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Directed by SS Rajamouli, the film is being touted as the biggest budgeted film ever made in Telugu and sources close to the film unit say that it’s going to be a visual treat from Rajamouli, once again. All the lead actors and actresses have undergone intensive training in sword fighting and horse riding since the beginning of the year and going by all the news in public domain about the film, it certainly promises to be an epic in the true sense. As soon as news broke out that Prabhas and Rana are going to shoot for the film in Kurnool, hordes of people thronged the film’s sets to catch a glimpse of the shoot, but no one was allowed to go near the shooting spot. Incidentally, Baahubali’s shooting began exactly a year after Rajamouli’s previous film Eega released in theatres. Over the past few months, Rajamouli and his team have been working relentlessly to set up the project. Sabu Cyril, National Award winning art director, is on board along with music director MM Keeravani and cinematographer Senthil. Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni are producing the film.

Bollywood vamps, villains come alive at Macau

V

aried looks inspired by Bollywood's villains and vamps over 100 years of Indian cinema came alive at Grey Goose IIFA Rocks, a fashion show on the eve of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards. The IIFA Rocks fashion show, presented by designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil, was held Friday night, reflecting the strong association between Bollywood and fashion. Dark and heavy colours like red and navy blue ruled the occasion with anarkali suits and

dresses high on flares and drapes. The designers added bling to their collection by pairing golden borders and bases with the dresses. While the women represented Bollywood vamps with their dark and mysterious looks, the men flaunted fitted trousers and coats. It was actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, the showstopper, who took the limelight when he sashayed the ramp in a dark brown suit teamed with broadended trousers. His stylish moustache only added to his powerful presence. If the fashion quotient was high, so was the entertainment quota courtesy splendid performances by actors Arjun Kapoor, Sonu Sood and Dia Mirza as well as singer Arijit Singh. The ceremony also witnessed the distribution of IIFA technical awards, in which director Anurag Basu's Barfi! led the race. IANS

Raanjhanaa banned in Pakistan R

aanjhanaa has been banned in Pakistan amid fears the film might offend conservative viewers. The movie, starring Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush, centres on a love story between a Muslim-Hindu couple. Arshad Ali, a senior government official and chairman of the Pakistan Censor board, told AFP: "The censor board did not clear this movie because of its controversial story." Raanjhanaa was originally scheduled for release in June. While Pakistan ended a fourdecade ban on the screening of Indian movies in 2006, strict censorship regulations have resulted in several Bollywood films being banned in the country. In 2012, Saif Ali Khan starrer Agent Vinod was banned after the censor board expressed concerns about references within the film to the Pakistan spy agency the ISA. Advertisements for Akshay Kumar's Khiladi 786 were removed from billboards following concerns that the film's title might offend Muslims.

Rishi Kapoor not playing Dawood in D-Day: Advani F

ilmmaker Nikhil Advani has clarified that veteran actor Rishi Kapoor’s character in the forthcoming film D-Day is not modelled on underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. “I completely deny that Rishiji is playing Dawood. He plays an exiled crimelord named Iqbal. If there are similarities to Dawood, it can’t be helped. All art basically needs to borrow from real-life headlines. It doesn’t mean we are making a feature film on

any specific person,” Advani said. A recent report based on Rishi Kapoor’s interview to a daily claimed the actor plays Dawood in the film. The interview triggered a panic attack among the film’s team who are now frantically trying to complete the post-production while avoiding trouble from crime syndicates. One hears that members of the cast, including Rishi Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Irrfan, were summoned a few days back to re-dub some of their

more controversial lines. “Why is so much being made out of one character’s resemblance to someone we know? I’m being asked how a director of such emotional films as Kal Ho Naa Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq and Patiala House can handle an action film. “But there is so much more to DDay than the action involving the extrication of a wanted criminal from Karachi. The drama and emotions are the mainstay, not just the action IANS scenes,” said Advani.

Star or no star, it makes no difference to Sonu S

inger Sonu Nigam, who has lent his voice to newcomer actor Tanuj Veervani for Luv U Soniyo, says only the song and credibility of the composer matters to him, not the actor on whom the song would be filmed. Tanuj is actress Rati Agnihotri’s son, who is making his debut with the film being directed by Joe Rajan. “When I sang in Mast, at that time Aftab Shivdasani was also a newcomer and all the songs were hit. So you cannot judge a song’s success by its star-cast,” said the singer in an interview.

He added that he gives importance to “song and music composer’s credibility”. Why don’t current songs have a shelf life, he was asked. “Today songs are recorded in a hurry as there are several deadlines to meet. There has to be a catchy word in every song, which is repeated again and again. A hook word has become very important. Songs that are made today are not long-lasting,” said Sonu. Luv U Soniyo is set to release July 26 and features Neha Hinge IANS as the female lead.

B

ollywood actor Anupam Kher, who runs his acting school Actor Prepares, doesn’t believe in the “born actor” theory. He feels that some are gifted, but others can cultivate the craft of acting. “Anyone who can lie can act... this is my theory. Lying is a form of acting. It is a method of convincing yourself. The whole thing about born actors is rubbish,” he said at the acting workshop, 100 years of Indian cinema: An actor prepares, which was organised Friday as part of ongoing 14th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards. He conducted a detailed twohour theatre workshop and spoke about how to cultivate acting skills. The Saaransh actor said that the first lesson for an actor is that “he should be ready to make a fool of himself ”. Talking about over-acting, Anupam said: “Actors think if they will do normal acting, then people won’t be convinced... this is why they over-act.” He added that Bollywood is known for over-the-top acting. “Bollywood has been accused of loud acting. People in the West, including NRIs, feel that Indian cinema is all about dancing and singing. This is tough as you are trying to do something so unreal, so convincingly on the screen,” he said. However, he feels the period after 2000 has been “the golden era” for the industry as well as the actors. “The kind of cinema and movies, which are coming out now, are different and they manage to do fantastic business,” said Anupam, who also shared anecdotes from his childhood and memIANS ories of his first play.

No, not like on Duped! — “one of those reality shows where people get duped into doing stupid things like giving some stranger their car or a bunch of money”. But the kind of scam where someone hides cameras in famous people’s houses and tries to sell the videos. Sounds like a case for everyone’s favourite pint-sized private eye. hakira’s Swiss bank account is safe. A judge in Geneva has rejected a claim from the pop star’s ex-boyfriend Antonio de la Rúa that her assets should be frozen until they had worked out what he alleges is rightfully his. De la Rúa stated in a $100 million lawsuit first filed last year that the two had made an oral agreement concerning their professional relationship prior to breaking up in 2011. According to Shakira’s legal camp, the Swiss court’s June 18 ruling was right on. “In a fifteen page well-

reasoned opinion the Swiss court dismissed all of Mr de la Rúa’s claims that he was entitled to any participation in Shakira’s past, current or future business, brand or assets, including future income,” the singer’s attorney, Ezequiel Camerini, said in a statement to E! News. Camerini states that affidavits given by Shakira’s other business associates clearly indicated “that the parties never had the intention to form a partnership or joint venture”.

arco Andretti won the pole position for Sunday's Pocono 400 by setting the pace in Saturday's qualifying session for the first IndyCar race at the triangle-shaped track since 1989. Andretti, who set a track record with a two-lap qualifying average of 221.273 mph (354.036 km/hr), was joined in the front row by Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay, a fellow American, and Canada's James Hinchcliffe.

una Rossa confirmed on Saturday that it would not race in Sunday’s scheduled America’s Cup opener against Emirates Team New Zealand on San Francisco Bay, the Italians boycotting in a rules protest. Luna Rossa does not plan to race on San Francisco Bay in the Louis Vuitton Cup until an international jury rules on its protest against a last-minute change to a rudder design rule, a decision expected to come down on Monday.

ernando Alonso admitted Ferrari were not fast enough to challenge for the front rows of the grid after qualifying eighth on Saturday for the German GP. He added that he did not think the team had gambled by opting to run on medium tyres in the session to give them a different strategy to the cars around them in Sunday's race. He said, "I think we did a step forward — we are more competitive than we were at Silverstone.”

AX-TROIS-DOMAINES: Britain’s Chris Froome secured the Tour de France yellow jersey after a “dream” stage eight win on the first day in the mountains which proved costly for his rivals Saturday. Sky team leader Froome launched an audacious solo attack 5km from the race’s first summit finish at AxTrois-Domaines and crossed the finish 51sec ahead of teammate Richie Porte to underline his overall victory credentials. Spain’s former two-time winner Alberto Contador finished 1min 45sec behind while the victory hopes of 2011 champion Cadel Evans all but faded when the Australian trailed home 4:13 in arrears. Froome, last year’s runner-up behind teammate Bradley Wiggins, now leads the race with a 51sec lead over Porte, with Spain’s Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) in third at 1min 25sec. Contador (Saxo) is 1:51 off the pace while Australian Evans (BMC) is 23rd overall at 4:36. “The objective for us today was to go for the stage and go for the jersey, but to finish onetwo is just fantastic,” said Froome, who took the race lead from

PARIS: Usain Bolt fired out a

warning to American arch-rival Tyson Gay by scorching to a world-leading time of 19.73 seconds in the 200m at the Paris Diamond League meet on Saturday. The Jamaican held off the attentions of compatriot Warren Weir to streak past the field in emphatic style. Edging Gay’s season best by one-hundredth of a second was the perfect broadside in the runup to what promises to be a

keenly contested World Athletics Championships in Moscow between August 10-18. “All is building up towards a great world championships, you will see a big show there, it will be the climax,” warned Bolt. “And I want to be ready for that.” In perfect conditions with temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius, Bolt led a host of impressive performances from a stellar line-up on the track AFP and in the field.

There is no room for national sentiment on the world’s biggest bike race: just ask Cadel Evans. On the first day in the high mountains of the 100th Tour de France, the 2011 champion virtually lost all hope of winning a second yellow jersey as Britain’s Chris Froome stamped his authority on the race. Froome, last year’s runner-up to Sky teammate Bradley Wiggins, capped an audacious solo attack 5km from the summit of Ax-Trois-Domaines with a victory that gave him the race lead and a significant advantage over his rivals. Spain’s two-time winner Alberto Contador finished 1min 45sec off the pace and is now seventh overall at 1:51 behind Froome.

McDowell, Richard in top spot VERSAILLES: Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell produced another round of masterful consistency as he moved top of the leaderboard alongside South African Richard Sterne on five under par after three rounds of enthralling golf at the French Open on Saturday. The 32-year-old former US Open champion has dropped just three shots over 54 holes and could have held the lead outright were it not for a missed short putt on 17 that was a rare blemish to his immaculate short game. Sterne meanwhile took advantage of a back nine collapse by Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and will pair McDowell for what should be a thrilling final round on Sunday at the sun kissed Le Golf National course outside Versailles, which will host the 2018 Ryder Cup. “I played very nicely today, I really did. Sort of carried on from what I did on Thursday and Friday,” said McDowell. “This golf course demands fairways and greens, most golf courses do but this one even more so, shots offline get punished heavily AFP here,” he added.

Johnson Wagner in lead WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS: American Johnson Wagner fired a six-under par 64 on Saturday to seize a two-stroke lead after the third round of the US PGA Greenbrier Classic. Wagner made seven birdies, the last of them on a 12-foot putt at the par-3 18th, against a lone bogey to complete 54 holes on 14-under 196, two strokes ahead of countryman Jimmy Walker, who fired a bogey-free 64 at The Old White. Sweden’s Jonas Blixt was third on 200, one stroke ahead of Australians Matt Jones and Stephen Bowditch and US teen Jordan Spieth, who at 19 is trying to become the youngest US PGA Tour champion since 1931. Wagner missed the cut in six of his past seven starts and withdrew from the other after the first round. But thanks to some extra work with his coach last month, he was poised to capture his fourth career US PGA title after triumphs at the 2008 Houston

Open, the 2011 Mayakoba Classic in Mexico and last year’s Sony Open in Hawaii. “I had a little ‘Boot Camp’ with my coach two weeks ago and got my game back to where it was heading into Hawaii two years ago,” Wagner said. “I’m feeling really good right now. I’m able to shape the ball. It’s really clicking.” When the last pairing teed off, there were 19 players within two strokes of the lead and 36hole leader Matt Every stumbled with three bogeys in the first four holes, setting the stage for Wagner to seize command. Wagner opened with a 14foot birdie putt, sank an eightfoot birdie putt at the par-3 third and tapped in for a birdie at the fifth to reach 11-under and grab a two-stroke lead. Blixt, who opened with back-to-back birdies, added an eight-foot birdie putt at the seventh to reach 10under, which put him in a share of the lead after Wagner took a AFP bogey at the seventh.

LISICKI

FACES UP TO BLEAK

LONDON: Sabine Lisicki insists she can still achieve her dream of winning a Grand Slam title even if the bare statistics of her up and down career threatened to conspire against her. The 23-year-old German had won the hearts of Centre Court with her smiling, storming run to the Wimbledon final as she knocked out three Grand Slam champions — Serena Williams, Francesca Schiavone and Samantha Stosur. But her world collapsed in spectacular style in Saturday’s final against Marion Bartoli, her 6-1, 64 loss punctuated by floods of tears and ugly errors before she broke down and sobbed at the trophy presentation. With the likes of Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka both exiting Wimbledon in the

first week, Lisicki confronted the bitter realisation that her best ever chance at a major may have disappeared in an 81minute rout. Her record at Wimbledon is an impressive 19-5 but a woeful 1615 at the three other Slams, suggesting that Melbourne, Paris and New York will always remain out of reach. In 2013, Lisicki fell in the first round of the Australian Open and the third round of the French Open. Outside of Wimbledon, where she was also a semifinalist in 2011 and a quarter-finalist in 2009 and 2012, her Grand Slam performances have been underwhelming throughout her six-year career. A fourth round run at the 2012 Australian Open remains her best effort. AFP

PERFECT DAY COULD SPARK MORE GLORY

LONDON: Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli insists her perfect day on Centre Court could be just the start of another remarkable chapter in one of the more unlikely tennis success stories. Bartoli romped to her first Grand Slam title on Saturday as the French 15th seed thrashed Germany’s Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final. The 28-year-old, beaten by Venus Williams in her only previous Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in 2007, is the fifth oldest woman to become a first-time major winner in the Open Era. It was an incredible moment for Bartoli, whose career had been on a downward spiral in recent years and hit rock bottom in February when she struggled with the emotional decision to move on from her dad Walter, who had coached her since childhood. She eventually turned to

former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo for help after failing to strike up a rapport with a series of coaches and the transformation has been swift and stunningly success. With a first Grand Slam crown secured, Bartoli, who celebrated her victory by clambering into the players’ box to embrace her father and Mauresmo, hopes the second phase of her career provides more of the success that once seemed so elusive. “Of course I’m going to try my hardest to get some more. Now that I get one, I definitely believe I can get more of them,” she said. “But I just want to enjoy this one because I haven’t still realised I’m really the Wimbledon champion. “It will take me some few days. And actually when I do realise what I’ve done then I will maybe think about the US Open and getting a shot over there.” AFP

ei Hsieh and Peng Shuai of China won the Wimbledon women’s doubles title on Saturday with a 7-6 (7/1), 6-1 win over Australian duo, Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua. Peng and Hsieh, born four days apart in January 1986, have been friends since their junior days and won the first of their five titles together back in 2008. Hsieh is the first Taiwanese player to win a Grand Slam major. Their win also meant that both of the women’s

Murray spurred on by LONDONL: Andy Murray insists last year’s painful Wimbledon final defeat to Roger Federer will spur him on to history as he bids to end Britain’s 77-year wait for an All England Club men’s singles champion on Sunday. Murray tackles world number one Novak Djokovic, the 2011 champion, on what will be an emotionally-charged afternoon on Centre Court where 12 months ago the Scot broke down in tears after his loss to Roger Federer. “I think I’ll be probably in a better place mentally. I would hope so just because

I’ve been there before. I won a Grand Slam. I would hope I would be a little bit calmer going into Sunday,” said Murray. After his loss to Federer, Murray took Olympic gold at Wimbledon and then claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open. On Sunday, Murray will attempt to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the Wimbledon title. “I think I learnt a lot from last year’s Wimbledon. The whole grass court season last year I learnt a lot from,” said

WEEPS AFTER

LONDON: Sabine Lisicki broke down in floods of tears after crippling stagefright condemned her to a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Marion Bartoli in Saturday’s Wimbledon final. Lisicki, who had beamed her way into a maiden Grand Slam final, struggled to keep her emotions in check as the match slipped away from her in the second set. She then completely lost her composure as she addressed the Centre Court crowd after her 81-minute choke. “I was just overwhelmed by the whole situation, but credit to Marion. She handled it perfectly, she’s been on the tour for a long time and deserves this. I just hope I get another chance as well,” said the 23year-old Lisicki, who had knocked out five-time champion Serena Williams in the fourth round. “I still love this tournament. I have on my side also individually. “So we don’t get together and have dinners and parties, but we definitely always chat and remember the fun days we had as juniors.” Djokovic, seeking to win a seventh major, hopes that should he win on Sunday, he will still receive a warm welcome in Scotland. The Serb spent time at Gleneagles with girlfriend Jelena Ristic last year and they even passed Murray’s home town of Dunblane. “I was on the highway. I made a picture of the road sign of Dunblane and I sent him that photo. He said, What are you doing there? I said, I was paying you a visit but you’re not at

home,” recalled Djokovic. “I made a little surprise for my girlfriend because Scotland and Britain is full of beautiful medieval castles and we are in love with that. We love that fairytale, romantic, medieval sights. “I took her there for her birthday. We spent a few days. We didn’t spend much time outdoors because it was raining all the time, which is very strange for this part of the world!” Djokovic said he will not get caught up in Britain’s desire to see Murray end the 77-year wait for a men’s singles champion at their home Grand Slam. “For me it’s another final. on grass at Wimbledon at last year’s Olympics. This will be Murray’s seventh major final while the Serb will be playing in his 11th major final and seeking a seventh title. Murray needed five sets to beat Fernando Verdasco in the quarter-finals and four sets to see off giant Pole, Jerzy Janowicz in a bad-tempered semi-final. Djokovic had cruised to the semi-finals but needed five sets to defeat Juan Martin del Potro on Friday in the longest ever last-four clash at Wimbledon. AFP

Jana Novotna held the previous record of 45 majors before she broke her duck at Wimbledon in 1998. SORRY FOR

B ARTOLI

LONDON: A leading BBC sports presenter was deluged by a barrage of criticism on Saturday after he lambasted Marion Bartoli for not being “a looker”. The BBC was forced to apologise after John Inverdale made his remarks on a radio programme following the Frenchwoman’s 61, 6-4 win over Germany’s Sabine Lisicki in the women’s singles final. Inverdale reportedly told listeners: “Do you think Bartoli’s dad told her when she was little, ‘You’re never going to be a looker, you’ll never be a Sharapova, so you have to be scrappy and fight’?

said Bob Bryan. “He’s married; I have a family; I have a kid. We’re just playing for fun. We’ve done it all in the sport, and now we’re just out there taking swings and not living and dying with every win and loss,” he went on to add. Mike Bryan said that the brothers still have plenty of ambitions, and one of that included defending their Olympic title in 2016 in Brazil. “Probably like to hit 100 titles. I think today was 91,” said Mike when asked to set out their future plans. “Then maybe try to finish No. 1 ten times. This year would be nine, if we did it. We got a pretty good lead. Then try to get to Rio and get another medal.” Ken McGregor and Frank Sedgman are the only pair to have completed the calendar Grand Slam back in the preOpen era of 1951. AFP

NOT ‘ LOOKER ’ REMARKS The BBC issued a rapid apology. “We accept that this remark was insensitive and for that we apologise,” said a spokesman. Bartoli, 28, shrugged off the incident. “It doesn’t matter, honestly. I am not blonde, yes. That is a fact. Have I dreamt about having a model contract? No. I’m sorry. “But have I dreamed about winning Wimbledon? Absolutely, yes.” Inverdale insisted that he had meant his remarks to be light-hearted and said he was a great admirer of the French player who won her first Grand Slam title in her 47th major appearance. England recall Onions for opener

Graham Onions was recalled by England as they boosted their bowling options by naming five seamers in a 13man squad for the first Test of the Ashes series against Australia.

LONDON: Graham Onions (in pic) was recalled by England on Saturday as they boosted their bowling options by naming five seamers in a 13-man squad for the first Test of the Ashes series against Australia at Trent Bridge next week. Durham paceman Onions, who won the last of his nine

Test caps against the West Indies at Edgbaston last year, was joined in the squad by Yorkshire seam-bowling allrounder Tim Bresnan, who missed the recent home series win over New Zealand while he recovered from elbow surgery. Also in the squad were pace trio James Anderson, Stuart

Australia batsmen hold key to Ashes LONDON: England will find themselves in the unusual position of firm favourites when they begin the defence of the Ashes against Australia at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge ground next week. The hosts are bidding for a third successive series win over their arch-rivals — something they last achieved back in the 1950s. While an Australia attack featuring Peter Siddle and James Pattinson could yet prove a match for England seamers such as James Anderson and Stuart Broad, provided they remain free of injuries, the outcome of the series is likely to hinge on the performance of the tourists’ batsmen. Australia captain Michael Clarke apart, the visitors’ top-order does not boast another proven world-class run-scorer. When England won the last Ashes series in Australia in 2010/11 3-1, all three of their victories were by an innings — a reflection of their batting strength and Australia’s batting weakness. The hope expressed this week by former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody was that, just as in 1989 when Australia were written off ahead of the Ashes only to win 4-0, a new star batsman will emerge just as Steve Waugh did 24 years ago. But former Australia captain Ian Chappell was gloomy about Australia’s prospects of regaining the urn. “I just don’t see any way Australia can beat England,” Chappell, who added he also expected England to win the return series in Australia starting in November, told the AFP Guardian’s website in an interview.

Broad and Steven Finn. Broad missed England’s warm-up win over Essex with a shoulder injury, a match where key off-spinner Graeme Swann was struck a painful blow on the right arm, having had surgery on his right elbow earlier this year. But both bowlers were passed fit.

PORT OF SPAIN: Lendl Simmons has been summoned to replace suspended captain Dwayne Bravo in the West Indies squad to face Sri Lanka in the fifth match of the Tri-Nation Series at Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday. Bravo’s one-match suspension was handed down by International Cricket Council match referee Jeff Crowe after the hosts fell behind the required over-rate during their 102-run loss to India on Friday. It was the second such offence by the West Indies under Bravo’s stewardship in less than a month following similar tardiness in the Champions Trophy match against South Africa in Cardiff on June 14. Simmons’s call-up suggests that he will be a straight replacement for Bravo in the final eleven to face the Sri Lankans, meaning that squad member Devon Smith will again be left out from a side to be led by hard-hitting batsman Kieron Pollard. It was Pollard who led the West Indies to a thrilling one-wicket victory over India a week ago in Kingston when Bravo was sidelined by a groin strain. Almost seven years after he made his ODIl debut, the 28-year-old has another opportunity to claim a regular place in the West Indies side. AFP

England national selector Geoff Miller stressed the 30year-old Onions, whose 32 Test wickets have come at a shade under 30 runs apiece, was more than just injury cover. “We’ll have to wait and see what the conditions are like. They, and the surface, could change in four or five days,” Miller told Sky Sports. “Then that gives the captain and the coach the opportunity to go in whichever direction they wish. It’s better to be safe.” As expected, Nick Compton was left out of the squad after Miller had said Joe Root would be promoted to open the innings, something the 22-yearold does for Yorkshire but has yet to do at Test level, alongside captain Alastair Cook. Somerset opener Compton, grandson of England great Denis, scored back-to-back hundreds in New Zealand earlier this year but was omitted after a poor return series against the Kiwis that saw him manage just 39 runs in four innings. “Joe will open the batting, but we’ll see what happens from then onwards,” Miller AFP said.

Shea replaces injured Gatt on the US Gold Cup team SAN DIEGO: Brek Shea will replace injured midfielder Joshua Gatt on the United States squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, US coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced on Saturday. The move came after Gatt was ruled out for the North American biennial championship event due to a knee injury he suffered June 29 with Molde of the Norwegian first division. “It’s a very unfortunate situation for Josh,” Klinsmann said. “This is now a couple of times that he has been injured after receiving a call up to the national team and it must be frustrating

and disappointing. “He has been making great progress and we were really looking forward to the opportunity to see him in action.” While the setback hurts Gatt’s hopes for a spot on the squad that is in a strong position to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Brazil, it opens a door for Shea, who was a reserve in a 6-0 US friendly win over Guatemala on Friday. Chris Pontius, a midfielder for D.C. United of Major League Soccer, was added to the 12-player US pool for later possible inclusion on the Gold Cup side.

Toulalan joins Monaco MONACO: France midfielder Jeremy Toulalan has joined bigspending Monaco, the Ligue 1 side announced on its website on Saturday. The 29-year-old, who joins from Malaga, signed a two-year deal with an option on a third year.

Toulalan joins a club that has already spent lavishly for its return to the French top flight with Ricardo Carvalho from Real Madrid, Moutinho and James Rodriguez from Porto and Falcao from Athletico Madrid all having already moved to the principality. Funded by Russian billionaire

Dmitry Rybolovlev, Monaco are looking to make a splash in Ligue 1 next season and rival fellow bigspenders Paris Saint-Germain. Toulalan won two French titles with Lyon before moving to La Liga in 2011. Moanco said they will present their new recruits to the press on Monday.
