RPF hand-in-glove with thieves? So it would seem if the dharna staged at the Nampally station on Tuesday is of any indication.

Lost Orson Welles film found in Italy It was thought the only known copy was lost in a fire that gutted Welles’ home in 1970. NEW YORK CITY: A longlost silent film directed by Orson Welles in 1938 has been recovered from a warehouse in northeastern Italy, where it will be screened in public for the first time in October. Too Much Johnson was originally intended to be shown as a prologue to a slapstick comedy at the Mercury repertory theatre in New York, but it was never finished. Until staff at the Cinemazero art house cinema in Pordenone, Italy found the work print in a warehouse earlier this year, it was thought the only known copy was lost in a

fire that gutted Welles’ home near Madrid in 1970. How it wound up in Italy “is still a mystery,” said Kellie Fraver, spokeswoman for the George Eastman House museum of film and photography in Rochester, which announced its recovery on Wednesday. What is known is that all but one of the reels were in relatively good shape — and the exception was brought back to life by experts in the Netherlands. AFP

Hot chocolate can keep brain healthy: study Mohd Shubhan mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Five businessmen from UP and Bihar who run a garment business in the City found to their horror on Tuesday that the Railway Protection Force, rather than protecting passengers were protecting the criminals. The five cloth merchants , Sabir, Rizwan, Rakesh, Birjesh and Arvind Kumar had got alighted from the Dakshin Express at the Nampally railway station on Tuesday night. The five had `1.5 lakh in cash on them besides huge bundles of clothes for sale. It was Rakesh who first realised his pocket was picked. Soon, others too found they were

under attack from pick-pockets and snatchers. Meanwhile, Sabir managed to catch hold of one thief. They shouted for help and the commotion brought the Railway Police to the scene. The RPF is reported to have caught hold of a couple of the snatchers. The businessmen reached the Nampally police station with the one quarry they had caught red-handed. Meanwhile, they heard that the whole gang was caught by the railway police. The five rushed to the railway station, only to be told

that it was false and nothing was recovered. The railway police’s flat denial has weakened their case with the Nampally police. Later, to their shock, the businessmen learnt from sources that the RPF had indeed known this gang and they had come to an understanding. The stolen money was reportedly recovered but the railway police denied any knowledge of it. Sad and wearied, the five merchants sat on a dharna at the railway platform. Finally some railway officials came and pacified them and assured the five to go their way as they would enquire into the whole matter and inform them of the proceedings.

But an editorial accompanying it also says that more work is needed to prove the link.

WASHINGTON: A US study has suggested drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day may help elderly people to keep their brains healthy. The study, published online in the American Academy of Neurology journal Neurology, involved 60 people with an average age of 73 who did not have dementia. The participants drank two cups of hot cocoa per day for a month and did not consume any other chocolate. These people were also given tests of memory and thinking skills as well as ultrasounds to measure the amount of blood flow to the brain. The researchers found that 18 of the 60 participants, having impaired

ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: City police being short-staffed and overloaded with work is a problem that has been haunting the department for some years now. Whenever there is any law and order problem that arises in the City, immediately fingers are raised at the police department, however, when it comes to providing facilities to this department, the government seems to have a laid-back attitude, laments sources in the constabulary. Hyderabad has been a target of several terror attacks and still remains vulnerable. With a around 3,000 vacancies in the department, we are over stretching the limit, say officials. Since

the past 4-5 years the government has not been recruiting for varied ranks, making it difficult for the police department to AROUND THE

CITY

effectively man the City. Apart from political stir and bandobast, what tests the patience of the police are the endless march of religious processions. “Since the past four years there has been a backlog of positions unfilled. There is a major deficit in lower- rung positions. On a regular basis we have to make do with the staff in hand, however, in demanding situations we have to take the support of the police department from the other states,” says the

Additional Commissioner of Police (law and order) Anjani Kumar. When the police from other states and additional force like the Rapid Action Force, Central Reserve Police Force have to be pressed in action, the government has to shell out a huge amount of money. Ironically the government does not seem to mind spending huge some on hiring them rather than recruiting their own police force. Since there is a shortage most of the constables, sub inspectors and inspectors have been working more than double their duties to make do in the situation. The continuous working hours for days and months seems to be taking a toll on the department. Many police personnel especially those in the

lower rung have been complaining of health ailments and are forced to take leave, making the situation in the police department more vulnerable. “Considering how the City has been a target for terror attacks, we always have to be on our toes. Apart from that till recently the Telangana agitation kept us occupied and then there were various other events. Festive time is when the City is under high alert and we have to make sure that there is proper police arrangements at every nook and corner where is a gathering. Normally it’s a eighthour duty after which there is a change in shift, however, due to lack of staff we are forced to work for 24 hours at a stretch without any rest. This is taking a toll on our health,” says a police official. Senior police officials however state that the recruitment is under progress. “Because of many technical reasons there has been a delay in the recruitment process. However by this year end or the beginning of next year we will bounce back to normalcy with sufficient number of staff,” said Anjani Kumar.

MENTAL HEALTH

Blue light at night could depress you WASHINGTON: Bluecoloured night lamps have the worst effect on one’s moods while exposure to red light at night has significantly less evidence of depressive symptoms, says a new study. New research has shown how colours of night lamps could influence moods. In a study done on hamsters, researchers found that blue light had the worst effects on moodrelated measures, followed closely by white. Hamsters exposed to red light at night had significantly

less evidence of depressive symptoms and changes in the brain linked to depression, compared to those that experienced blue or white light. AROUND THE

WORLD

The only hamsters that fared better than those exposed to red light were those that had total darkness at night, reports Science Daily. The findings may have important implications for

humans, particularly those whose work on night shifts makes them susceptible to mood disorders, said Randy Nelson, co-author of the study and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the Ohio State University. “Our findings suggest that if we could use red light when appropriate for night-shift workers, it may not have some of the negative effects on their health that white light does,” Nelson said. The study appears in the Aug 7, 2013 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. IANS

HYDERABAD: Despite anti-T stir, the state administration has begun the process of gathering information to aid the Central Government in formulating the Bill for the creation of the Telangana State. This is despite the fact that the Union Government is yet to send an official order informing the AP Administration that it has initiated the process of bifurcation of the State. The state apparatus has issued orders to all its departments to furnish detailed information about the present status of their departments. Chief Secretary PK Mohanty reportedly asked all the heads of departments to keep the details of their departments ready. The Centre may ask for the details any day, officials point out. The responsibility of gathering this information has been entrusted to planning department of the state government. The Special Chief Secretary of the Planning Department SP Thakkar is supervising the collection of data on this score. The details sought by the planning department mainly revolve around the share of Telangana and Seemandhra regions in various sectors. Some of these crucial sectors included irrigation sector, infrastructure sector which include Roads and Building department, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, electricity department and Revenue Department. The gathering data also put its

HYDERABAD: The flow from the TRS to Congress seems to have begun. Vijaya Rama Rao and another senior leader Chandrasekhar, who had recently met AICC state in-charge Digvijay Singh in Delhi are reported to have made up their mind. Reports have also been stating that there were eight senior leaders of TRS including several MLAs who were in queue to join the Congress. Vijaya Rama Rao represented the Station Ghanpur constituency of Warangal in the previous Assembly. He was also a minister in the YSR Cabinet when TRS joined the government. His exit is a blow to the TRS. Meanwhile, the TRS leadership is on a panic-control mode. As there is confusion on the status of the party once Telangana is formed, many MLAs worried about their future have been overtly or covertly holding parleys with the Congress. The TRS leader K Chandrasekhar Rao has not made his mind known on the issue of merger though reports say disbanding the party and joining the Congress was a quid pro quo for Telangana state.

The PMO has rubbished as ‘mischievous’ the reports that a statement on the killing of five Indian soldiers on the LoC was changed at its behest. NEW DELHI: Defence minister AK Antony is expected to make a fresh statement in parliament over the killing of five soldiers on the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir two days ago, minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Shukla said on Thursday. Antony, who is under attack from the Opposition for his earlier statement over the killing of Indian soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, is expected to make the fresh statement at noon. “Defence minister may give a statement in parliament at noon on the soldiers’ killing. The Army chief has gone to the spot and has come back. He will brief the defence minister about the incident,” Shukla told reporters here. Shukla said that based on the information provided by the army chief, Antony will share the same with the parliament.

Metro Rail slows on its tracks But officials insist the project is on schedule, as they try to placate apprehensions that the project may suffer after of bifurcation of State. Many fear possible trouble by anti-T forces.

MOHSIN ALI ali@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The Congress’s shoddy handling of the Telangana issue has created problems for many infrastructure services in the State and the ambitious Metro Rail is no exception. With haze pulling over the fate of Hyderabad, the `14,132 Crore Hyderabad Metro Rail project too faces hurdles though it may not be derailed. The status of the city is the major issue today. If Hyderabad is going to be a joint capital or capital of Telangana or a Union Territory has to be settled to place the rail project in proper perspective, officials point out. Fear of pro-united Andhra elements creating problems is palpable among the rail managers. Manila bans Dutchman in ‘crying cop’ case MANILA: A Dutch activist blamed for making a Philippine policeman cry was deported and permanently banned from the country, the immigration bureau said Thursday. The bureau said Thomas van Beersum was deported on Wednesday after the authorities had picked him out from a photograph that went viral showing him allegedly haranguing a uniformed police officer at an antigovernment protest in Manila last month. Van Beersum is an “undesirable alien” who violated the terms of his tourist visa by joining a protest, immigration bureau spokeswoman Antonette Mangrobang told AFP. “The activities he engaged in do not fall under those of a regular AROUND THE

The activist was photographed yelling at a weeping Filipino riot policeman at an anti-government protest during President Benigno Aquino’s annual policy address to parliament on July 22. Photographs of the incident, showing policeman Joselito Sevilla crying as he held back van Beersum and other activists, spread around the world on the Internet, and provoked heated debates on social media sites. The policeman later said he was crying from exhaustion and hunger after a long stint securing the area for Aquino’s speech. Van Beersum was detained at Manila airport on Tuesday as he prepared to leave the country. The Dutchman, who said he is 21, alleged in a posting on his Facebook account late Wednesday that his 30-hour detention was a government ploy to distract attention from its shortcomings. AFP

Japan to cut $83 bn in govt spending AROUND THE

WORLD

TOKYO: Japan on Thursday pledged huge spending cuts amounting to $83 billion over two years as it works to bring down the industrialised world’s biggest debt mountain. The cuts — amounting to an average reduction of more than 4.0 percent of current annual spending — comes days after the International Monetary Fund warned again over Tokyo’s borrowings. The moves were outlined in the government’s mid-term fiscal plan which called for cuts of 8.0 trillion yen ($83 billion) between April 2014 and March 2016. There were few details about where the reductions would be made, and they come after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to boost public spending to stoke Japan’s tepid economy. Another key part of Abe’s plan, dubbed “Abenomics", was the Bank of Japan’s huge monetary easing plan, unveiled in April, as Tokyo looks to counter years of growth-sapping deflation. AFP

No 5-star morsels for Goa pigs AROUND THE

NATION

PANAJI: Pigs reared in Goa will no longer get to eat the choicest leftovers from five-star hotels. A recent order by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has banned all the 36 five-star hotels in the coastal tourist state from back-channelling leftovers, veggy and fruit peels and pulp to piggeries citing pollution concerns. “What is happening is that the waste generated at five-star hotels is now merely being dumped at these piggeries. It’s very messy. Some piggeries even have dumps of garbage," GSPCB chairman Jose Noronha told reporters Thursday. Pork, along with beef, is standard cuisine for the Christians in Goa, who account for nearly 30 per cent of the state’s population. Most Goan villages still have rudimentary piggeries, which slaughter pigs for sale in the local market. Tourism and an increasing demand for pork has also spurred the setting up of modern piggeries which often have tieups with five-star hotels for pig food.

Canshala: School of hope for fighters A public-private partnership allows children with cancer to get normal education while undergoing treatment. MUMBAI: It’s called Canshala and is an island of peace and learning for a group of ailing children for whom education had, at one stage, become a distant dream due to their treatment for life-threatening cancer. The children mingle with normal children in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) school in south Mumbai’s Parel area, where they are taught by regular teachers, two of whom are provided by the civic agency and the remaining by NGO CanKids. This formal education helps them make up the time lost due to staying away from school or dropping out for treatment. Two of these serve as classrooms for the brave hearts, one as a therapy room and another as an office. “The school bridges the gap in education these children have so far been facing during treatment," Canshala mentor Surabhi Kakar told IANS. “Now, with continuity of education, the children not only get a feeling of normalcy but they can carry on with education in their regular school after treatment, reducing chances

of their becoming dropouts," Kakar added. Corporation employee Neelima Vijaykumar Rawler, who teaches the children with cancer, said: “They are all hardworking students...after coming to school they forget about their painful brush with cancer." Of the 80 cancer patients reg-

istered with Canshala, at least 20 attend classes daily. Free books, meals, uniforms and school bags provided by the civic agency add to the attempt to make them feel at par with other normal children in the school. A majority of the cancer-afflicted students of the school hail from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and

Madhya Pradesh. “They attend school when they are not undergoing treatment at city hospitals like Tata Memorial, Sion and Bai Jerbai Wadia," CanKids director Enid A. Kerr told IANS. “We contact parents in hospitals or dharamshalas meant for patients’ families and motivate them to send their kids to our school when they are not required at the OPDs," Kerr added. Shuba Devi Singh, mother of Gaurav Kumar Singh, 12, a patient of Hodgkin’s lymphoma that weakens the immune system, is happy with her son’s exposure at the school. “He is a talented artist and got the first prize in an interschool BMC art competition in Mumbai," she said proudly. “Gaurav is always eager to head to the school. LOS ANGELES: If you don’t sleep well, you could well feel the pressing urge to gorge on junk food — thus doing much harm to your health, says new research. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, examined the brain regions that control food choices and found that inadequate sleep makes one crave junk food. “What we have discovered is that high-level brain regions required for complex judgements and decisions become blunted by a lack of sleep, while more primal brain structures that control motivation and desire are amplified,” said Matthew Walker, a UC Berkeley professor of psychology and neuroscience and senior author of the study. FAWAZ AL-HAIDARI Agence France-Presse ADEN: Yemen said Wednesday it had foiled an Al-Qaeda plot to storm a Western-run oil terminal and seize a port city, as a terror alert kept US Middle East missions closed. The jihadist network’s feared Yemeni affiliate planned to assault the Canadian-run Mina alDhaba oil terminal on the Arabian Sea coast and take staff hostage, including Western expatriates, government spokesman Rajeh Badi told AFP. A nearby export facility for oil derivatives was also targeted, Badi said. Al-Qaeda also plotted to seize the nearby Hadramawt provincial capital Al-Mukalla, a port city of 100,000 people, and the Ghayl Bawazeer area to its north, where they briefly declared an Islamic emirate earlier this year. “If they were to fail in seizing control of the facilities, the plan was to take foreign experts away as hostages,” Badi said. The attack was planned for Monday, which coincided with the 27th day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and was the second day of a mass closure of US missions across the Middle East and North Africa. The plot was foiled around two days before its planned launch, Badi said. Both Washington and London pulled diplomatic personnel out of Sanaa on Tuesday citing intelli-

ZANZIBAR: Attackers in the east African island of Zanzibar threw acid into the faces of two young British women late Wednesday night, the first such assault against foreigners in the popular tourist destination, police said Thursday. Two men on a moped threw the acid at the 18-year old women as they strolled through the streets of Stone Town, the historical centre of the capital of the semi-autonomous Tanzanian archipelago, splashing their faces, chests and hands. “Police in Zanzibar have launched a manhunt, and we ask for public assistance in identifying the attackers,” police said. The attack on the women, both working as charity volunteers on the island, came at the end of the Muslim holy month of fasting of Ramadan, and as people began to celebrate the Eid holiday. “The motive for the attack on the volunteers aged 18 years, has not been established. Investigations are on until we apprehend the criminals,” Khamis said. The women were flown to Tanzania’s economic capital Dar es Salaam for treatment, where their wounds were said to be “not life threatening”, health ministry officials said.

LEGALISING DRUGS

Uruguay’s ‘Marijuana Man’ The country’s president sees his country as a potential test case for an idea slowly gaining steam across Latin America — that the legalisation of some drugs could sap the cartel violence devastating much of the region. ANA INÉS CIBILS & RAFAEL NOBOA ALDECOA Agence France-Presse MONTEVIDEO: Uruguay wants to make a “contribution to humanity” by legalising marijuana but will backtrack if the “experiment” goes awry, President Jose Mujica told AFP in an exclusive interview. Mujica said he sees his country as a potential test case for an idea slowly gaining steam across Latin America — that the legalization and regulation of some drugs could sap the cartel violence devastating much of the region. “Like any experiment, natu-

rally, there are risks, and we have to understand that if they prove too much for us then we must backtrack. We do not have to be fanatics," Mujica said. Last week a Bill to have the government control and regulate marijuana sales and distribution was passed by the lower house of Uruguay’s legislature. The Bill, which is backed by Mujica’s leftist government, now awaits action by the Senate. By putting the government in charge of the marijuana industry, which is estimated to be worth $30-40 million a year, the Bill aims to curtail illegal trafficking and the violence that comes with it.

But opposition parties are against the idea and a poll released last week said so are 63 per cent of Uruguayans. Many opponents fear the legalisation of cannabis would turn Uruguay into a pot tourism hub and encourage the use of stronger drugs. Mujica counters that the current policies have failed, citing both the moral and financial expense of the war on drugs. He estimates that Uruguay, a small country with just 3.3 mil-

lion people, spends upwards of $80 million a year on combating drugs but seizes just $4-5 million worth of contraband. “As a business this would be a disaster, if you look at it purely from an economic standpoint," he said. “From a moral point of view it’s much worse, because the violence consumes a lot of people who have nothing to do with it," he said. Uruguay is hardly the worsthit by drug violence. In Mexico warring cartels have killed tens of thousands of people since 2006 and homicides have skyrocketed across much of Central America.

LEGAL OR NOT, CANNABIS USE IS GROWING CAMBODIA While technically illegal, the use of cannabis is widespread among the Khmer people and foreigners visiting the country. Marijuana can easily be purchased and smoked in public areas without the threat of arrest. Many “Happy” restaurants located in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville publicly offer food cooked with marijuana, or as a side garnish.

NETHERLANDS Cannabis products are only sold openly in certain local “coffeeshops", other types of sales and possession are not permitted, although the general legal approach toward cannabis was before de facto decriminalisation.

NORTH KOREA The growth, sale and consumption of cannabis is not regulated by the North Korean government or classified as a drug.

SWEDEN Though regionally and in certain circles “street legal” it is still illegal to sell, transfer, purchase, use or possess any quantity of cannabis in Sweden. Social stigmatisation through social rejection and exclusion from the labour market and social services are the most common sanctions most common sanction in matters regarding personal use. The national police runs a “disturb and annoy” program aimed at users supported by the national “zero tolerance” policy. Fines and imprisonment for personal use is practically unheard of.

USA Illegal at the federal level (but legal at the state level in Colorado and Washington) Decriminalized in 14 states (at the state level) and in Detroit.

Guatemala’s president has called for drug legalisation, a vision shared by ex-presidents in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia but opposed by the United States and Mexico. Mujica insists he does not want to totally liberalise marijuana, but merely bring it under strict official control, adding that he would be in favor of tough prison sentences for anyone cultivating unregistered cannabis. Mujica also says he is not defending marijuana use or ignoring the problem of drug addiction. He declined to say whether he would eventually consider the legalisation of harder drugs.

It’s billed as the most dangerous golf course in the world, and considering you can set off an explosive if you have a nasty hook or slice, we’ll go ahead and agree. The club has a membership of 2,500 and while non-members can play, it costs a hefty HK$2,000 (US$250) a round. Fanling is home to one of Asia’s biggest golfing events — the Hong Kong Open, first hosted there in 1959, which attracts a stellar field annually. Observers say the contention over the golfing enclave, in a city known for its free market, is symbolic of a shift in people’s attitudes away from favouring business over the wider public interest. “People find privileges more questionable now," Chung Kimwah of the Centre for Social Policy Studies at Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University, told AFP. More than 170,000 people live in cramped subdivided flats, a government-commissioned study found in May, underlining the scale of the city’s housing crisis. Land supply is short and house prices have been exacerbated by an influx of capital from China that is pushing up prices. Officials have targeted a net increase of 450,000 apartments over the next 10 years. When Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying was asked last month whether the golf course would house these, he said the target could only be met by “not ignoring any piece of land".

POLICE STAKE CLAIM TO THE LAND OF BULLETS Dozens of drug traffickers had taken refuge in this impoverished corner of Rio after fleeing southern slums where, since 2008, authorities have been gradually wresting back control ahead of next year’s World Cup and the 2016 Rio summer Olympics.

LAURA BONILLA CAL Agence France-Presse RIO DE JANEIRO: The crumbling, bullet-riddled house on top of a hill in northern Rio de Janeiro’s Mangueirinha slum was until recently used as a “court” by Brazilian drug traffickers. This week, police turned it into one of their bases in this community of 25,000 people located in the Baixada Fluminense district. Dozens of drug traffickers had taken refuge in this impoverished corner of Rio after fleeing southern slums where, since 2008, authorities have been gradually wresting back control ahead of next year’s World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. But starting in July, police began moving into Mangueirinha, too. And Monday, a 180-strong detachment, mainly from an elite battalion, began patrolling the area under orders to prepare for a permanent presence. It is crime born amid desperation, Brandao said. “These people have nothing. They have lunch without knowing what they will eat for dinner." Police conceded that they cannot completely eradicate the drug trafficking, but Brandao insisted that the Red Command “is already weakened." “Life here is hard. We live with narcotraffickers. What can we do? You have to keep your head down," said Bruno de Oliveira Palmeira, a jobless 19year-old who used to repair tires. “I would never have believed that police could get here. Now I do."

WHAT IS A FAVELA?

A FAVELA is the term for a shanty town in Brazil, most often within urban areas. The first favelas appeared in the late 19th century and were built by soldiers who had nowhere to live. Some of the first settlements were called bairros africanos (African neighbourhoods). This was the place where former slaves with no land ownership and no options for work lived. Over the years, many former black slaves moved in.

Hands off Apple: Publishers to US The DOJ order prohibits Apple from entering into deals with publishers to limit price competition in the next five years. SAN FRANCISCO: Heavyweight publishers on Wednesday came out swinging against a bid by the US Department of Justice to rein in deals Apple can make with ebook providers. HarperCollins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster and others joined together in a legal brief opposing “remedies” proposed by the DOJ as punishment for Apple’s conviction in an e-book price-fixing case. “The plaintiffs are attempting to impose a specific business model on the publishing industry, despite their express and repeated representations that they would play no such role," the publishers argued. On Friday, the Justice Department launched a bid to more tightly regulate Apple’s wildly lucrative iTunes storefront after the tech giant was found guilty of conspiring with publishers to fix prices. The proposed settlement would see Apple end its current agreements with five US-based publishers. Macmillan, Penguin and Simon & Schuster. The tech firm would promise not to enter new contracts with the five to limit price competition in the next five years, and would allow other ebook retailers to link to their products from iPad and iPhone apps for two years. “The provisions do not impose any limitation on Apple’s pricing behavior at all,"

the publishers argued in the filing. “Rather, under the guise of punishing Apple, they effectively punish (publishers that settled in the case) by prohibiting agreements with Apple to use the agency model." The agency model lets publishers dictate prices for eBooks, while sellers such as Apple or Amazon are paid a fee for each sale. The DOJ order goes further, prohibiting the iPhone maker from seeking to drive up prices by signing “agreements with suppliers of e-books, music, movies, television shows or other content." Publishers argued that the DOJ’s plan contradicts settlements negotiated in the case. Under the existing settlements, the publishers agreed to end any agreements they have with retailers like Apple to prevent them from discounting titles sold through their platforms. uantanamo detainees are marking six months of an unprecedented hunger strike that has trained attention on the more than 150 men held at the US military prison without charge or trial. The strike began on February 6 as a spontaneous reaction to a cell sweep in which guards allegedly mishandled copies of the Koran, but soon grew into a mass protest against the legal limbo within the walls of the War on Terror prison. The strike helped push US President Barack Obama in May to renew his four-year-old vow to shut down the controversial facility in Cuba. But many of the legal and political obstacles to closing the facility remain, meaning that dozens of detainees who have been force-fed through nasal tubes are no nearer to returning home. As the majority of the 166 prisoners endured the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan beneath a scorching Caribbean sun, just 57 remained on hunger strike, down from an all-time high of 108 in June. "The hunger strike is unprecedented in its length and its magnitude," said Captain Robert Durand, a prison spokesman. "What they want is not to be detained... That is different from previous hunger strikes. In 2005 and 2006, they were talking about the conditions of detention." The prison counts as being on hunger strike those who have skipped nine consecutive meals.

HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS It seems AK Antony did not go through the details of the LOC attack that claimed the lives of five of our brave soldiers. If he had, he would not have messed up as he had in Parliament. And his response to the fracas also seems like not having done his homework. Perhaps he should have resorted to his old tactic: silence.

A

bout 30 seconds ago I got off the phone with my nephew, Viraj. Wishing him a happy 9th birthday, I jokingly said that I would send him clean underwear. All though I was joking, that comment reminded me of some of the presents I have received in the past, and how it has shaped me as a person today. For Diwali there was a skit that the kids would put on for their parents. I usually don’t partake in these activities, but this year I heard that each kid got a gift at the end. Of course you didn’t have to ask me twice. I would put on any outfit and recite any lines for the present. Fortunately for me puberty hadn’t kicked in yet, where as for my cousin, his voice was cracking up and perfect for the part of one of the female gods. Unfortunately for me, the hairy part didn’t wait for puberty, hence why I was Hanuman, the monkey god! I came out swinging my big mace and acting like a monkey (again, you can see where it all started). I was a damn happy monkey cause at the end of today I knew there

was a gift waiting for me. And what made this gift even sweeter was that we were guaranteed it was going to be a toy. So there was no way I was going to get underwear or shorts, this was going to be a toy. And you don’t lie to a kid with a fake monkey hammer, cause fake or not it’s going to hurt you if didn’t get my toy. Time to open the gift. Everyone was being called one by one on stage to receive his or her gift. This was nerve-racking because I was one of the last kids to be called. While waiting I caught a glimpse of what the other kids received. Some got toy soldiers, some got transformers, while others got sports equipment. So I got called, grabbed my gift and ran off of the stage before the applause was over. Ripping through the wrapping paper the excitement was too much. I hadn’t even seen what I got and I was already smiling ear to ear, hell I was already imagining how it would work. WHAT THE HELL! I stood there in shock. This isn’t happening to me. There has to be some mix up! This cannot be my gift! Who screwed up, fire them! Beneath the layers of wrapping paper and inside the shoebox were a towel and a tube of toothpaste. Trust me, I checked, but there wasn’t anything else inside the box. I got a towel and

a tube of toothpaste. You can’t even imagine the look on my face. I was speechless. I couldn’t even cry. And to add insult to injury, the other kids came around to see what I got. Now kids can be pretty brutal if you get a crappy toy, but this gift was so mind boggling, that the other kids just looked at me and said nothing as they walked away. No verbal insult could come close to making me feel worse. Everything after that was a blur. I remember gathering my bag, and putting my new towel and toothpaste in it, and walking home. I didn’t

even bother changing. Walking down the streets of Belize dressed like monkey didn’t even faze me, I was still in shock. And it doesn’t end there. When you think it couldn’t get worse, it does. Slap a monkey while he’s already down why don’t you. I emptied the contents of my bag on the living room table and went to change into one of two pairs of shorts I owned only to come back and find someone took my towel! After all I went through I stood in the living room with only a tube of toothpaste!

hrough out his political career, AK Antony has been accused of many things. Weak leadership, incompetency, lack of charisma are few of them. But never has the former chief minister of Kerala been accused of lying. Antony is known for maintaining high standards of rectitude, both in private and political life. One may say that was the one thing that he may call upon at his time of judgement. And though the pint-sized man was berated for his shortcomings, even his vociferous critics would whisper in admiration about that one trait of his: his clean political image. Whenever a shade of allegation of graft happened to come over him, Antony would immediately offer to resign, and that on more than one occasion instilled in people that faith that he should be an honest man. Long gone are those times. Antony, fed up with the continuous bickering over

power and say in the party with his former mentor and later nemesis, K Karunakaran, appeared more than glad to have gotten the high command call to become defence minister. It would be a lie to say that those familiar with the man and his image did not snigger. "Antony, defence minister! NAH!" Even then when people doubted his capability to do justice to the defence department, no one questioned his integrity. However, that very quality of his has come under the scanner now that his statement and the Army's version of the cross-border raid by Pakistan that claimed lives of five Indian soldiers, do not match. Earlier, he would volunteer to resign before anyone asked. Now calls have risen for his resignation before he could do so. He may quit, he may not quit: but if he is to keep that image of his intact, he has got to tell the truth. And that's not too much to ask of a man like him.

WORK

People who walk to work are 40 per cent less likely to develop diabetes and 17 per cent less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who drive, according to a new study.

R

esearchers analyzed data from 20,000 UK residents to examine how the ways they travelled to work affected their health. Walking, cycling and using public transit all were linked to a lower risk of being overweight than driving or taking a taxi. People who bicycled to work were about half as likely to have diabetes as those who commuted by car. The study also found that 19 percent of people who used private transport — such as cars, motorcycles or taxis — to get to work were obese, contrasted with 15 per cent of those who walked and 13 per cent of those who cycled. Modes of getting to work

varied widely in different parts of the United Kingdom. For example, 52 per cent of people in London used public transit, compared with 5 per cent in Northern Ireland, according to the study appearing August 6 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. High blood pressure, diabetes and being overweight all are major risk factors for heart and circulatory disease. The new findings show that people could reduce their risks of serious health problems such as heart attacks by avoiding car commutes, the researchers said. "This study highlights that building physical activity into the daily routine by walking, cycling or using public transport

to get to work is good for personal health," Anthony Laverty, of the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, said in a college news release. "The variations between regions suggest that infrastructure and investment in public transport, walking and cycling can play a large role in encouraging healthy lives, and that encouraging people out of the car can be good for them as well as the environment," he said. Although the researchers uncovered an association between walking or cycling to work and decreased risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, they did not necessarily prove a cause-and-effect link. NEWSPROCEDURE SIRT BRIEFS PERFORMED AT APOLLO HOSPITALS HYDERABAD: Apollo Health City, Hyderabad performed a pioneering interventional procedure — Selective Internal Radiation Treatment (SIRT), also known as Trans Arterial Radio Embolization to treat primary liver cancer by injecting radioactive material — Yttrium 90 — a radioisotope loaded on microspheres. A 50-year-old man suffering from Rectal Cancer, which had spread to the liver,

was successfully treated, using SIRT procedure for the first time in AP, on July 31, 2013. Patients suffering from primary liver cancer, liver metastasis from colorectal cancer and neuroendocrine tumours and are unsuitable for any treatment including resection can now be treated with this interventional procedure — SIRT. SIRT involves injecting of low levels of radioactive material, Yttrium 90

into the arteries that supply blood to the tumour. The radioactivity destroys the tumour without affecting other parts of the body, thus minimising exposure to healthy tissue. Studies show that SIRT procedure offers survival benefits to patients of liver metastases ranging from 12 to over 30 months and in advanced cases of liver cancer like hepatocellular carcinoma the procedure

offers median survival benefits from eight to 24 months. Some of these patients can also be downstaged for surgical resection or liver transplantation. The treatment requires expertise involving multi-disciplinary teams including interventional radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, radiation safety officers, gastro or hepato biliary surgeons, medical and surgical oncologists and a hepatologist.

Technology 3-D PRINTING

Want something? Print it POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

B

en Wittbrodt’s room looks like any other 23year-old’s room — key chains, scale versions of Lego figures four times their actual size, and trinkets for his girlfriend. But you will be surprised where he got his stuff. He got it all printed. For the uninitiated, he uses a 3-D printer which sprays a material, mostly plastic, onto a surface in layers to create a three-dimensional object. Ben says he has squeezed through 10 pounds of plastic till now. 3-D printing is huge among scientists, engineers and even veterinarians (one recently printed a prosthetic for a lame duck); and as days go by ordinary people too have started to use it print out every day objects. Wittbrodt recently printed a shower head. Wittbrodt learned of 3-D printing a year ago when he was an engineering graduate student at Michigan Technological University. Now he’s an expert in the field. Apart from writing his master’s thesis on it, he built his own 3-D printer at home and runs his own 3-D printing business. “I’ve been selling iPhone cases like there’s no tomorrow,” he said, adding that he can provide customers with designs that they can’t really find online or at Apple or Best Buy. 3-D printing has been in existence as early as 1984. Then it was mainly used by companies to make prototypes and architectural models. But it hugely remained in sophisticated labs due to various reasons: the machines costed tens of thousands of dollars; complicated design; and of course it required technical know-how to operate them.

Cheapest printer

O

ne of the cheapest and simplest non-assembled 3-D printers is made by Printrbot and costs just $299. But Pearce says if you have trouble hooking up a normal 2-D printer, it’s probably best to buy one that has already been assembled. Printrbot sells those for $399. Their website provides instructions and video tutorials for assembly.

However, experts believe 3-D printers could be a part of every home in a few years. Associate professor at Michigan Technological University Joshua Pearce recently conducted a study that predicts the three-dimensional printers will be in every home in just a few years. The study, published in a July issue of Mechatronics Journal, explains 3-D printing is about to go mainstream, and Pearce says the reason is financial. “We’re looking at the next stage where 3-D printing costs have gone down so far that the average family can use it,” Pearce said. In the study, Pearce and his team worked with 20 common household items listed on Thingiverse, a website containing designs of all sorts of things that can be 3D printed. Ranging from toy figurines of black dragons to customizable bracelets and rings, the designs are used and contributed by members of the

community. Pearce’s team then used Google Shopping to find out the maximum and minimum cost of buying those 20 items online and compared the costs to making the items with a 3D printer. The conclusion? It would cost the average consumer anywhere from $312 to $1,944 to buy those 20 things compared to $18 to make them in several hours. So that’s what Wittbrodt did. He has even

Finance, design and technical knowledge had kept 3-D printing from us. But experts believe 3-D printers could be a part of every home in a few years.

printed his own showerhead that he has been using for a couple months now. “It’s pretty much whenever I’m going through day to day life and I find something or if I break something, and I think I kind of need this, I look online and nine times out of 10 it’s already online.” But for the rest of us who don’t know how to build our own 3-D printers, there are plenty of companies out there who have done the work for us. Espen Sivertsen, COO of Type A Machines, says 3D printing technology is growing very quickly and will become even more affordable and userfriendly in the next couple of years. His company sells 3D printers for just under $1,700. The instructions fit on a single 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. “If you work with your hands, using things like power tools, a 3D printer is fairly easy to pick up,” Sivertsen said. “It’s like driving a car. A bit of a learning curve at first but once you get it, it’s not hard.”

Yahoo today unveiled the first in a series of new logos, but the infamous ‘!’ remains as much of a part of its name as ever. Yahoo says its new logo will be “a modern redesign that’s more reflective of our reimagined design and new experiences” — and it will show off a bunch of variations of the logo across its blog, Twitter account and network of sites every day for a 30-day period. That will culminate in the new logo being introduced on September 5.

LG UNVEILS NEW DEVICE

LG Electronics on Wednesday unveiled a new device to challenge Apple, Samsung and other rivals in the booming smartphone market. The G2 was introduced as the first in a new LG premium smartphone line and boasts features that include control buttons moved from the edges to the back, and a 5.2-inch high-definition screen spanning the front. LG is the second-largest maker of Androidpowered smartphones, with 6.5 percent of the market in the second quarter of this year, according to a report on Wednesday.

Apple vs Motorola A US appeals court on Wednesday revived an Apple smartphone patent complaint against Motorola Mobility. A three-judge panel sided with Apple, telling the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to reconsider part of its ruling last year that Motorola did not infringe on the iPhone maker’s patented touchscreen technology. The ITC complaint dates back to late 2010, prior to Google’s $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility. Motorola on Wednesday said that the appeals court ruling leaves the door open for the ITC to re-affirm its decision that Apple’s claims were not valid.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

MONTREAL MASTERS

Murray, Nadal advance MONTREAL: Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal (left) competed on hard courts for the first time in five months Wednesday, with both reaching the third round of the Montreal Masters. Second seed Murray shook off his post-Wimbledon cobwebs with a fighting 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) victory over Marcel Granollers. The win came just over a month since the Scot made history with a first British Wimbledon men’s singles title since 1936. French Open champion Nadal, seeded fourth, showed no mercy to Canada’s Jesse Levine in a 6-2, 6-0 win as the Spaniard returned to

Luna Rossa defeat Artemis SAN FRANCISCO: Italy’s Luna Rossa breezed to a second straight victory over Sweden’s Artemis Racing Wednesday in the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup. Luna Rossa completed the 15.4-nautical-mile course on San Francisco Bay in a time of 54 minutes, 26 seconds, finishing just over two minutes ahead of Artemis. “We are feeling better,” said helmsman Chris Draper of Luna Rossa who seized a 2-0 lead in the series. “We got a few things to work on. We sailed a good race but we can sail much, much better than that.” This was just the second race for Artemis who made their much-anticipated second-boat debut on the bay on Tuesday. It was also just the 10th day Artemis had its AC72 vessel on the water. The team suffered a devastating setback in May when their first AC72 catamaran capsized and broke apart in training. British crewman Andrew Simpson died in the accident. Since then, Artemis have been working feverishly to get their second AC72, dubbed “Big Blue” for its striking navy blue hulls, ready to race. “A really frustrating day,” Artemis’ Nathan Outteridge said on Wednesday.

action for the first time since his shock Wimbledon opening round loss to Steve Darcis six weeks ago. Nadal saved three break points while breaking Levine five times in 71 minutes on court. “The knee is not bothering me much,” said Nadal. “In the last couple of days, I was able to practice with no limitation, that is the most important thing.” “After seven weeks without playing tennis, you start a tournament on hard court, that is tougher for the body. You always feel a few things at the beginning. But hopefully those things will not limit my chances to play well.”

Nadal takes on Jerzy Janowicz, who beat Canada’s Frank Dancevic 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-4. Murray’s victory puts him in a match against colourful Latvian Ernests Gulbis, a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 winner over Italian 13th seed Fabio Fognini. The Scot said: “I was nervous beforehand, that was a good sign. I’m pretty ready to move forward and not think too much about Wimbledon and concentrate on the US Open. “If I’d lost today, it would have just broken the momentum a little bit. The more matches I can get in the next few weeks, the better.” AFP

WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Six to watch out for

Usain BOLT (JAM; men’s 100m, 200m 4x100m relay): The biggest name in track and field has also firmly established himself at the top table of global sports stars since winning triple gold in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He swept aside all before him at the 2009 worlds in Berlin, setting two new world records in the process. The sole blot on his copybook was a false start disqualification in the 100m in the 2011 Daegu worlds, quickly rectified when he added a further three Olympic golds to his trophy haul at the 2012 Games. Allyson FELIX (USA; women’s 200m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay): The graceful style of the lissom American belies a steely grit and fiercely competitive nature that has seen her become one of the dominant forces in women’s sprinting. At just 27 years of age, Felix has won eight world golds and four Olympic golds. But she is in

Moscow for one reason only: to reclaim the 200m title. Yelenya ISINBAYEVA (RUS; women’s pole vault): She could not have scripted her send-off to track and field any better, with a nostalgic finale on home soil in front of legions of her own fans. The two-time Olympic champion, double world gold medallist and world record holder, might have lost some of her on-field

prowess, but only the most foolhardy would dare to rule her out of the medal running. Asbel KIPROP (KEN; men’s 1500m): When Kiprop took to the track for the 1500m at Monaco’s Diamond League meet this season, all eyes were on Briton Mo Farah, who had stepped down to hone his speed ahead of an assault on the 5,000-10,000m double. Fourth-seeded Li stormed to a 6-1, 6-4 win against Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova while seventh seed Bartoli, who won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last month, took the first seven games of her match with America’s Lauren Davis in a

6-0, 6-3 victory. “Of course the first match is always tough, especially here because I didn’t play any tournaments for three or four weeks after Wimbledon, but I was feeling pretty good,” Li said. “I was still a little bit nervous, which is natural, but I was fighting a lot on the court and I’m happy to win today.” Bartoli said she was surprised how smoothly she rediscovered

her game after her Wimbledon triumph. “I hadn’t played on hard courts for a while, and also the last two times I played in Toronto I lost first round,” Bartoli said. “So I just wanted to enjoy myself on the court and try my hardest, and being able to win 6-0, 6-3 was obviously pretty good for me. I think I played well, and I’m very pleased with the way I handled everything on the court.” AFP

James DASAOLU (GBR; men’s 100m): The Briton came late to athletics, only really concentrating on sprinting when he went to university from the age of 18. But the 25year-old has hit a rich vein of form coming into the worlds. Bohdan BONDARENKO (UKR; men’s high jump): Usain Bolt’s predilection for world records notwithstanding, it is difficult to see where a new world best mark might come from. Bondarenko seems the likeliest bet, having hit some outstanding form in the run-up to the worlds. Cuban Javier Sotomayor’s record of 2.45m has stood since 1993, but the 23-year-old Ukrainian might just have what it takes to challenge.

McIlroy set to defend crown Rory McIlroy is looking to the past to help defend his title at the PGA Championship this week at Oak Hill.

JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse ROCHESTER: Rory McIlroy is looking to the past to help defend his title at the PGA Championship this week at Oak Hill after a season of misery following equipment changes. The 24-year-old former world number one from Northern Ireland has been watching videos of his victory last year at Kiawah Island to bolster his confidence and try and reclaim the attitude that has helped him win two major titles, including the 2011 US Open. “It’s just trying to remember how I felt that week and trying to carry some of that into this week and just get those good, positive thoughts going,” McIlroy said Wednesday. “Everyone sees when I walk and I’m playing well, I have that little bounce in my step, so just trying to get that going again and trying to get that positive energy back.” McIlroy has managed four top-10 showings in 15 events but other than a runnerup effort at the Texas Open has not been a title contender. But McIlroy says that recapturing the magic is “not so far away. I just need to go out and

Woods will seek his 15th major crown, and first such title since the 2008 US Open, when the PGA Championship opens Thursday at Oak Hill. “I’ve had my share of chances to win,” Woods said . “I’ve had my opportunities on probably half of those Sundays for the last five years and just haven’t won it. There’s no reason I shouldn’t. “Every period is character building. You learn something from it and move on. Life would be pretty boring if it was easy all

the time.” McIlroy played few events at the start of the year and made an equipment switch to new sponsor Nike this year that required a period of adjustment, although he says he can’t blame the clubs for his current woes. “It was a valid point at the start of the year. I don’t think it’s a valid point now,” McIlroy said.

“I mean, it’s nine months in. Of course there’s going to be a transition period. I’m really happy with everything I’ve got in my bag and I’ve had the best part of eight or nine months to play with it.” McIlroy puts the blame on his swing struggles, notably without saying how much of that might be attributable to the equipment

IT ASHES 2013

Andy wants more from Eng England coach Andy Flower said that he considered the wins as a great achievement but with two Tests remaining, the team still had a long way to go. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse CHESTER-LE-STREET: England will bid to complete the second half of their Ashes mission when they face archrivals Australia in the fourth Test at Chester-le-Street starting Friday. The drawn third Test at Old Trafford left England an unassailable 2-0 up in the series with two to play and meant they’d retained the Ashes. But it left open the possibility of a shared series, something that hasn’t happened in an Ashes campaign since 1972. It took England just 14 days to hold on to the urn this time around — the quickest they’ve settled an Ashes series in their favour since the end of the Second World War. However, England coach Andy Flower was far from satis-

fied. “I suppose it is (a great achievement). But for me it’s all about winning this series, so it is still alive with two Tests to go,” he said. In Manchester, Australia

Warne criticises ‘smug’ English LONDON: Australian bowling great Shane Warne (right in pic) has accused England’s players of being “smug” during the third Ashes Test and speculated that they are being “arrogant” as a deliberate tactic. England retained the Ashes after rain forced a draw in the third Test at Old Trafford on Monday, giving the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead after three matches of the five-Test series. Warne, Australia’s all-time leading wicket-taker, felt the England players’ conduct after the game was unedifying, and singled out wicketkeeper Matt Prior and spin bowler Graeme Swann for particular criticism. “A lot of us reporting and commentating on the game were really taken aback by the way the England players were interviewing and behaving in press conferences and after-match interviews,” he wrote in British newspaper the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday. “It has caught the attention of those who report on the game, especially mine.” AFP

produced a much-improved performance with England collapsing to 27 for three on Monday’s final day before rain ensured a draw. The result meant Australia had ended a

run of six successive Test defeats and avoided equalling their alltime record losing streak of seven straight Tests set by the 19th century teams of 1885-88. Former Australia captain Allan Border said it looked like the tourists had “drawn their own line in the sand”, in much the same way his side did during the 1986/87 series, where, having lost the Ashes, they won the final Test in Sydney before starting 16 years of unbroken series dominance against England in 1989. “England are worried,” Border said. “The way this side is going over the next few months, look out. Australia has the momentum.” Then again, Australia had even more “momentum” during the 2010/11 Ashes after winning the third Test by 267 runs in Perth to level at 1-1.

Australia include Bird CHESTER-LE-STREET: Jackson Bird could play his first Test of Australia’s tour of England after being named Wednesday in a 12-man squad for the fourth Test at Chester-leStreet starting Friday. As expected, after an improved showing in the drawn third Test, albeit a result that meant Australia couldn’t regain the Ashes after defeats at Trent Bridge and Lord’s, the 26-yearold Bird was the only addition to the tourists’ Old Trafford XI. Bird who played the last of his two Tests against Sri Lanka in Sydney in January, was brought in amid concerns regarding fellow paceman Ryan Harris’s ability to feature in back-to-back matches. If Harris plays on Friday, it will be only the second time in his injury-prone career the 33-year-old has played in three successive Tests. The first occasion saw him break down in the third of those matches, the 2010/11 Boxing Day Ashes Test against England, when he suffered an ankle injury.

Bats used in Ashes under investigation: report SYDNEY: Officials are investigating whether players in the Ashes series in England have been placing siliconebased tape on their bats to avoid nicks being detected by ‘hot spot’ technology, an Australian TV station said Wednesday. Channel Nine said the ICC general manager of cricket operations Geoff Allardice was in Durham, where the fourth Test begins on Friday, to investigate the matter. Nine did not provide sources and gave no details of whether the Australian or England batsmen were believed to be using the silicone-based tape. Controversy has raged over the effectiveness of the Decision Review System during the five-match series, in which England retained the Ashes after winning the first two games and drawing the third. ‘Hot spot’ technology uses an infra-red imaging system to determine whether a batsman has made contact with a ball — with a visible

Pietersen hits out at ‘cheating’ claims CHESTER-LESTREET: England batsman Kevin Pietersen (in pic) on Wednesday angrily denied reports that he was one player in the Ashes series using silicone tape on his bat to avoid nicks being detected by “Hot Spot” technology. The allegations were made by Australia’s Channel Nine television but Pietersen said he would be “stupid” to try to cheat the system while Australia captain Michael Clarke denied any knowledge of sharp practice. Australia’s Channel Nine said the ICC general manager of cricket, Geoff Allardice, would be investigating the matter in Durham, where the fourth Test begins on Friday. However, the ICC insisted Allardice was coming over solely to speak to

the teams regarding their concerns regarding the controversial Decision Review System and said it was not investigating any alleged attempts by players to “cheat” Hot Spot. “These media reports are totally incorrect,” said ICC chief executive David Richardson in a statement issued by the global governing body on Wednesday. CR7 leaves Chelsea stunned Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in each half of the match to power his team to a 3-1 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in a football friendly at the Sun Life Stadium.

MIAMI: Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in each half to power Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in a football friendly at Sun Life Stadium on Wednesday. Ronaldo scored off a free kick in the 31st minute and helped seal the victory with a header in the 57th minute in front of the crowd of 67,273. "The team played fantastic," Ronaldo said. "This is what we are looking for. We are getting better." Marcelo Vieira also scored in the 14th minute for Real Madrid in the game which culminated the eight-team, 12-game International Champions Cup tournament. Ramires scored the lone goal for Chelsea in the 16th minute. "We are trying to find our fitness and get the team playing the right way," said midfielder Frank Lampard. "We could have played better." It was a disappointing loss for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho who was facing his old club just three months after his acrimonious departure from the Spanish giants.

Mourinho left Real Madrid to rejoin Chelsea, a team he led to back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. Real Madrid started quickly outshooting Chelsea 7-2 in the first 27 minutes and opening the scoring on a goal by Marcelo.

Marcelo finished off a nice run to the goal by hammering a shot through the legs of defender Gary Cahill and past a diving Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech. Ramires tied it up just two minutes later as he sprinted past the defence before finishing off

the play with soft chip over a charging goalkeeper Iker Casillas from in close. The game was interrupted briefly in the second half when a Real Madrid fan ran onto the field and hugged Ronaldo, who held onto him until security

After missing a couple of early chances he finally connected for his first goal in the 31st minute. Ronaldo drew a foul and then found the back of the net with a perfectly placed bending shot from 25 feet that fooled Cech. Ronaldo connected again in the 57th minute as he sprinted towards the goal and headed in a cross from teammate 'Isco' Alarcon. "I just tried to help my team and score goals," Ronaldo said. The three goals allowed by Chelsea were the first allowed in three Champions Cup tournament matches. "We had a long preseason. We travelled to Asia for two weeks, played three games here and we got one more. It is going to be an exciting season for us," Lampard said. Earlier in the day, AC Milan won the third-place match by beating the LA Galaxy 2-0. AFP

Manager Rodgers blasts Suarez Bayern aim for

LONDON: Luis Suarez's (in pic) uneasy relationship with Liverpool reached breaking point Wednesday when manager Brendan Rodgers accused the wantaway striker of lacking dignity over his public campaign to engineer a move away from Anfield. The controversial Uruguayan striker claimed that Liverpool had gone back on an agreement written into his contract, signed last August, which obliges them to sell to any club offering more than £40 million ($60.7 million). Arsenal are reported to have bid £40,000,001 for the player in a bid to trigger the release clause. The Liverpool way is all about a club with ambition, a club that strives to be the very best, a club that is about commitment -- that means that everyone is committed to the cause of fighting for the shirt, said Rodgers. It's also about dignity and being dignified in how you speak about the

club, on and off the field, and it's about unity. There will never be any player or person bigger than the club. Professionally, Luis Suarez has given me everything since I came into the football club, but there is

obviously a way in which you have to speak. This is a club that has offered Luis Suarez the utmost respect since the day he walked through the door. That's something that over the course of the coming weeks you need to have when you work for Liverpool Football Club. You've got supporters and players that have given Luis Suarez absolutely everything -- they backed him to the hilt. Rodgers was speaking after seeing Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, Martin Kelly and Raheem Sterling score in a 4-1 friendly win over Valerenga in Oslo. Suarez did not feature in the squad. I have the club's word and we have the written contract and we are happy to take this to the Premier League for them to decide the case but I do not want it to come to that, Suarez told The Guardian on Wednesday. repeat treble

BARCELONA: With Pep Guardiola at the helm, Bayern Munich aim to continue European domination when the new Bundesliga season starts Friday with rivals Borussia Dortmund out to knock the Bavarians off top spot. Having won 14 titles in four years at Barcelona, the 42-year-old Guardiola arrived in Munich to great fanfare in June, quickly making his mark on the team which won the treble of European, league and cup titles last season. The 4-2-3-1 formation which won the Bundesliga by a 25-point margin has been abandoned for a 4-1-4-1 system while Guardiola has radically experimented with his line up. The successful midfield partnership of Javi Martinez alongside Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger looks set to be broken up with the German star playing the defensive midfielder role solo while the Spaniard drops into centre-back. The signings of Barcelona's Under-21 captain Thiago Alcantara and Germany's Mario Goetze from Borussia Dortmund means Guardiola has a plethora of midfielders with 10 full internationals.
