TDP in cheer, rivals jeer

While Naidu is all upbeat about his padyatra and the coming polls, party rivals say it’s desparate measures to regain power. Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The local body polls have given the much needed fillip to the main Opposition in the state, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). The party and its president N Chandrababu Naidu seem to be ahead in the race as compared with other political parties. AROUND THE

CITY

Following the conclusion of his marathon walkathon (Padayatra), the TDP supremo busied himself with settling the internal issues of the party, barely venturing out to participate in any public programme. But the local body polls saw him step out with vim and vigour. This is because the panchayat polls are going to be the first test

case of his padayatra effect. If the party does well it is an indication of its efficacy. Naidu has so far held five regional level party meetings in five days — a feat no other party can claim. Thousands of party workers from the grass-roots level attended these meetings.

DYING ENTITY

DESPERATION, SAY RIVALS However, the rivals say Naidu is putting in extra effort out of desperation to return to power. Reacting on the issue, Congress Party senior leader and MLA A. Praveen Reddy said that Naidu is showing signs of panic. “It is evident from his expressions and speeches how desperate he is to get back to power. Naidu is using every opportunity to attract the attention of the public. He had organised a marathon Padayatra and doled out dreams to the people and made some show of aid to vic-

tims of the Uttarakhand floods,” he said. “Now, he is organising a series of meetings to enthuse confidence in party cadres. But all these acts of Naidu would be futile, as the people of the state have already deserted the TDP.” “I have examined his recent speeches. Most of the times, he lost his cool and made intolerant and bitter remarks against opposition parties. I had never

Taking a dig at Naidu’s desperation another Congress leader and party MLC Farooq Hussain said that the TDP supremo reminded him of a famous adage of a burning candle which gives more light before it goes out. “The adage suits Chandrababu Naidu. He is doing everything to grab power again. But his acts will not serve any purpose and will help in marking the end of TDP here after the next general elections,” Hussain said. Congress also mocked Naidu’s efforts to rope in his son Nara Lokesh. “Lokesh can be a good businessman, but can never be a good politician, as he lacks the punch and skills.”

M Venkat Ratnam from Kuntlur village in Hayatnagar, armed with a MBA degree came to Hyderabad last year. He did not find a job and so he decided, if not an employee, better be an

Thousands applied and though the amount was small he could collect `8 lakh through Hayatnagar post office. When none of the applicants received a form, they suspected foul play and alerted the police.

The police men called Venkat on phone posing as applicants who wanted forms. He replied and guided the caller to send MO to the address mentioned. He was inveigled into coming to an education meeting the next day at an appointed time. He agreed and when he came, the police took him into custody. Hayatnagar police are amazed at the efficacy of his campaign. It showed that anyone could advertise and cheat the public.

MONSOON WOES Taking out dirt and slush and depositing them a few yards away is the Secunderabad Cantonment way of dealing with drainage, and citizens suffer.

Cleaning drains — civic body style SRINIVAS SETTY

POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

N

ot long ago, Hyderabad was regarded as one of the comparatively clean cities in the country. But come monsoons, this carefully maintained facade begins to crack. Areas with stagnated water bodies or nallahs in particular, are the worst with drain water overflowing onto the roads and housing complexes in the area, causing major inconvenience to AROUND THE

CITY

commuters and passersby. But for residents of Patny Nagar in Secunderabad, it’s not the nallah itself that’s as much of a hassle as is the cleaning-up efforts being undertaken by the Secunderabad Cantonment. “The nallah here was cleaned by the authorities and all the waste dumped outside our colony. There are carcasses of dogs and birds also in that pile, so there’s an unbearable stench. We have made so many complaints, and more than a month has passed but no efforts have been made by the officials to clean up this garbage,” complains Jayesh Modi, a resident of the area. The pre-monsoon de-silting of nallahs is an annual exercise that is given out on contract by the government to third parties through public tenders.

However, most contractors only carry out the cleaning but ignore the waste that’s hauled out of these water bodies. The SP road nallah, which was originally a rainwater outlet, has steadily become a dumping yard of trash for residents of surrounding areas. Last month, the water body was unclogged in anticipation of monsoons but the resultant waste was ploughed onto the road and left untouched since. The seepage from this resultant garbage has now flowed into neighbouring houses and complexes, and become a breeding ground for deadly diseases. “The pile of garbage has been stinking and the water from it has been seeping through our walls. We are not even able to sleep in peace; if it rains, the situation will become unbearable.

There are carcasses of dogs and birds in that pile, so there’s an almost unbearable odour. Over a month has passed but no efforts have been made by the officials to clean this up. Jayesh Modi Patny Nagar resident Nobody will be able to go in or out,” rues another resident of the area, Umesh Mehta. Residents have a right to be concerned, as garbage pollution is a huge threat in monsoons, says Dr Vijay Reddy, an infectious diseases specialist. “Disea-

ses like malaria, typhoid, cholera, dengue are extremely prevalent in this season, especially in areas with high garbage pollution. As these areas are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and flies, contaminated water diseases spread with alarming speed,” he says. But despite repeated requests, pleas to take action have fallen on deaf ears. “We have made so many complaints to the cantonment but there’s been no action. They promise that the contractor will send a truck for the cleaning, but nothing has been done to rectify the situation,” locals rue. Driven to desperation, the residents say they can’t do anything more except hope there are no rains. Officials in the Secunderabad Cantonment, meanwhile, remained unavailable for comment.

he tragedy today is indicative of the wayward ways of GHMC’s estate department’s workings. Of the 57 dilapidated buildings marked for demolition in Secunderabad area, this hotel was not one of them. This despite the fact that the hotel already had visible cracks. But the owner disregarded it and the civic officials had no inkling. The hotel was opened at 4am and as the place is popularly known as Labour’s spot, more than 50 were here sipping tea and looking out for work. The people inside having snacks or tea are said to have had a glimpse of the visible cracks widening and some of them fearing a tragedy sprinted out in fear, say survivors. One of the lucky few who escaped death, Md Saud, said “I came for tea like everyday and after finishing, my friend and I left. Within 30 minutes, we heard the building crashed,” he says, throwing his gaze skywards as thanksgiving to the divine powers. Sri Lakshmi, a 40-year-old woman whose brother is stuck inside, says, “We were sitting on the other side of the road in the morning. My brother went inside the hotel to bring tea. He must have been talking with some friends for he took more time than usual. Soon the building came down with a loud sound like one sees in films. My brother is caught inside,” she said, sobbing. After the crash it was some passersby who informed the police and fire force, she said. The City Light hotel, a familiar hangout for working class people, used to organise special Ramzan festival Haleem lucky draws. This area in Secunderabad is filled with old buildings. On February 25, 2012, Monda Market building collapsed and three were killed. Just over a year later, this collapse takes place. Owner Hasan Ali, whose son is trapped inside, said, “My son Mustaffa was here to work at 4am. We are praying that he comes out alive.” Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy came to the scene of tragedy at 11am and he was seen struggling to get a view of the situation. Crowd control was a major hassle for the police as despite all efforts, the traffic jam and crowds kept swelling.

hief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who cancelled all his official programmes, rushed to the scene around 11am. He has ordered a detailed inquiry into the tragedy. He was heard inquiring why this building was not on the demolition list as some official informed him that it was not. He was accompanied by the Hyderabad collector, municipal commissioner and a host of officials. He later visited Gandhi hospital where most of the injured are admitted. GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu said that out of a total of 737 old buildings, a total of 356 dilapidated buildings posed a threat to the residents. He said a total of 16 buildings so far have been demolished and notices have been served on 57 dilapidated building owners. He said that they have initiated inquiry into the hotel collapse incident as the building housing the hotel was not in a critical condition like

other dilapidated structures. Just before the CM came, industries minister Geeta Reddy also visited and talked to officials and the owner of the building. After the CM visited, Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu has also visited the area. He blamed the GHMC and government for taking people’s lives lightly. BJP leader Kishan Reddy too visited the site and

demanded adequate compensation for the victims. The collapsed building is right beside Monda Market, which had a building collapse last year. It is said that many old buildings in Monda market have old tenants who are unwilling to move out. This is one reason for the buildings to remain un-repaired or pulled down.

The deceased have been identified as: n Murali n Raja n Manoj n Ramesh n Santosh The rest remain to be identified.

Injured and critical:

ASIANA JET CRASH

Pilot wanted to abort landing The flight data recorder also showed that as the Boeing 777 approached the runway its pilots were warned that the aircraft was likely to stall. JOSH EDELSON feedback@postnoon.com SAN FRANCISCO: The Asiana Airlines jet that crashed at San Francisco airport was traveling much slower than recommended and a pilot asked to abort the landing moments before the plane smashed into the ground, US investigators said Sunday. The flight data recorder also showed that as the Boeing 777 approached the runway its pilots were warned that the aircraft was likely to stall. The plane burst into flames killing two people and injuring 182 others shortly after it touched down. The request to abort the landing was captured on the cockpit voice recorder 1.5 seconds before the plane crashed, said National Transportation Safety Board chairwoman Deborah Hersman,

who is leading the probe. Her announcement came minutes after a video obtained by CNN confirmed that the aircraft, carrying more than 300 people, clipped a seawall short of the air-

Asiana shares down 6.4%

SEOUL: Shares in South Korea’s Asiana Airlines shed 6.4 percent on Monday after one of its passenger jets crashed at San Francisco airport over the weekend, killing two people and leaving 182 injured. In early afternoon trade the firm’s share price stood at 4,790 won. Investigators are looking into the cause of Saturday’s crash that killed two Chinese nationals, including a possible pilot error. On Sunday the Seoul-based carrier’s CEO, Yoon Young-Doo, said “currently we understand that there are no engine or mechanical problems” with the plane, which was bought in 2006.

tion training for the Boeing 777”, an Asiana spokeswoman told AFP. But he was accompanied by an experienced trainer, who acted as co-pilot. Asiana said the airliner, purchased in March 2006, had received repairs for oil leaking from an engine early last month. Asiana CEO Yoon Young-Doo on Sunday ruled out the possibility of mechanical failure as the cause of the crash. US investigators said the aircraft was travelling much slower than recommended and a pilot asked to abort the landing moments before the plane smashed into the ground at San Francisco International Airport Saturday. The flight data recorder also showed that the Boeing 777 received a warning that its engines were likely to stall as it approached the runway, where it later burst into flames killing two people and injuring 182 others. The request to abort the landing was captured on the cockpit voice recorder 1.5 seconds before the plane crashed, said National Transportation Safety Board chairwoman Deborah Hersman, who is leading the probe. It was the first fatal crash involving an Asiana passenger plane since June 1993, when a Boeing 737 operated by the carrier crashed into a mountain in South Korea, killing 68.

Asked about the speed at which the plane was traveling, Hersman, whose NTSB team is examining the wreckage, stressed that it was well below a desired pace of 137 knots. “We have to take another look at the raw data and corroborate it with radar and air traffic information to make sure we have a very precise speed. But again, we are not talking about a few knots here or there. We’re talking about a significant amount of speed below 137,” she said. The crash sheared off the plane’s landing gear and ripped the tail off. Large portions of the fuselage were burned out in the massive fire that erupted. Earlier Sunday, Yoon Young-

Doo, the CEO of Asiana Airlines, based in Seoul, said “currently we understand that there are no engine or mechanical problems” with the plane, which was bought in 2006. NTSB chair Hersman refused to comment on whether the flight crew was at fault, noting that the pilots would be interviewed and AROUND THE

stressing that it was day one of the investigation. However, she said the plane’s low speed triggered an automatic device called a “stick shaker” which warns pilots that a plane is about to stall. The warning came four seconds before the crash — 2.5 seconds before one of the pilots tried to abort the landing.

In what way has the nightlife changed in the past decade and where do you see it going in the next five years? 10D does many different things. It has its own, unmatched character. However, it’s true that we don’t enjoy the sort of monopoly we did earlier, now. I think we remain a hit because of the special nights we offer. For instance, Sunday nights are dedicated to Bollywood between 8-10pm, Mondays are vintage while Fridays are retro nights between 8-10pm. Basically, we have everything for every day of the week, which sets us apart. Moreover, we have constantly reminded our staff to be warm to everyone who walks in; no one is special and there is no room for preferential treatment at 10D. For 10D, the nightlife hasn’t changed much. It was never a place for the very young or the very old. We always had young professionals hang out at 10D,

we still do. I think the nightlife will change substantially in the coming five years, but as long as there are people who want to have fun, the changes will not affect 10D. Apart from being a successful bar serving good drinks, 10D is also known for its food. Tell us a little about that. We have chefs who are as good as chefs at standalone restaurants in the City. We serve three types of cuisines, which is a big deal for a bar. Moreover, we were the ones who introduced Continental cuisine to Hyderabad. Our lunch and dinner offers are also a big hit because of the price and variety available. Any celebrity visits? We’ve had many celebrities walk in. In fact, anybody who comes to the City parties at 10D at least once. Madhuri Dixit is among the celebrities who’ve made an appearance here. Apart from that, the entire Australian cricket team had partied here in 1992. What is the biggest compliment for 10D? The fact that people have been coming to us regularly for the past 11 years is compliment enough. Plus, everyone knows 10D!

‘Duped’ into clinical drug trials Many poor people in India are unwittingly taking part in clinical trials for drugs by Indian and multinational pharmaceutical companies that outsource the work to unregulated research organisations. AFP PHOTO/STR

ABHAYA SRIVASTAVA Agence France-Presse NEW DELHI: Niranjan Lal Pathak couldn’t believe his luck. When a doctor at a hospital in central India offered the factory watchman free treatment for a heart complaint, he jumped at the chance. It was five years ago and the family of the 72-year-old says he didn’t realise that Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital in Indore was about to enrol him in a trial of an untested drug. “We were told that our uncle will be treated under a special project,” his nephew Alok Pathak told AFP over the phone from Indore. “The doctor said we wouldn’t have to spend a penny. There was only one condition placed before us — that we should not approach local chemists if we ever ran out of his medicines but go straight to the doctor,” he said. A petition filed by the family in India’s Supreme Court alleges that the drug tested on him was Atopaxar, developed by Japanbased pharmaceutical company Eisai and supposed to treat anxiety disorders. His family and health rights group Swasthya Adhikaar Manch say that he would never have enrolled for the trial had he known that an untested drug would be administered. The family also claims that the side-effects of the drug left Pathak suffering from dementia. “He barely recognises us. His life is finished and so are our

The hospital says the doctor who treated Pathak administered the drug without authorisation and had since left the institution, while Eisai declined to comment. “Eisai is committed to making a meaningful contribution under any healthcare system and undertaking all of its activities adhering to the highest legal and ethical standards,” it said in an email to AFP.

hopes to see him healthy and happy again,” Alok told AFP, his voice choked with emotion. Many desperate and poor people in India are unwittingly taking part in clinical trials for drugs by Indian and multinational pharmaceutical companies that outsource the work to unregulated research organisations. The record of Pathak’s treatment was maintained on a medical card and his family is now fighting a battle, one of scores of cases brought by people who say

they are victims of illegal trials.

A BOOMING BUSINESS

Testing pharmaceuticals on humans is a mandatory and expensive step for drug companies who must prove to regulatory authorities that treatments have no dangerous side-effects in order to bring them to market. The Confederation of Indian Industry estimates that companies save up to 60 per cent by undertaking the different phases of testing a new drug in India as compared to developed countries. The clinical research market in India grew by 12.1 per cent in 2010-11 with revenues of $485

million, according to a report by Frost and Sullivan, a business research and consulting firm. The study, released in July last year, projected the industry to reach the one-billion dollar mark by the end of 2016. But the legal case in the SC, which began in February last year, has helped to bring to light many of the alleged misdeeds by doctors in connivance with pharmaceutical companies. “There has to be some sense of responsibility. Human beings are treated like guinea pigs,” Supreme Court judges RM Lodha and AS Dave said last year in a written statement.

Health campaigner Amulya Nidhi says the lack of strict regulations has prompted many pharmaceutical companies to look to India and other developing countries for the tests. “In Europe and the United States the laws are pretty strict. India, on the other hand, makes for a less restrictive destination for drug trials because the regulator lacks teeth,” said Nidhi, who works for the Swasthya Adhikaar Manch group. “In almost all the cases there is no genuine informed consent,” said campaigner Nidhi. “The label on the medicines often does not specify that it is meant for trial, and vulnerable people end up being used as lab rats,” Nidhi said, showing one such drug sample to AFP. Faced with widespread criticism, the government is amending the old Drugs and Cosmetics Act in order to fix greater responsibility on companies and ethics committees which are supposed to oversee the trials, although no timeframe for completion has been given.

ed tapeism is pushing India’s `1 lakh crore pharmaceutical industry in peril with most of the pharma companies shifting research and development (R&D) operations and clinical trials to SouthEast Asian countries of Cambodia, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and others, according to a just concluded survey by apex industry body Assocham. “Various South-East Asian countries are wooing India’s R&D industry by offering sops and transparent regulations as regulatory bottlenecks and a

plethora of committees have slowed permissions/approvals for trials or marketing drugs to more than 12-15 months back home in India while such permissions are given by the USFDA, EU and Singapore within a month,” says the survey. The chamber had interacted with about 250 top officials and representatives from India’s pharma industry based out of five states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu between March and June 2013 to ascertain and seek solutions to their concerns and problems. “The Gazette Notification issued by the department of health, ministry of health and

family welfare has put a ‘full stop’ to the research and development (R&D) in India, triggering serious concerns amid entire pharma industry,” said majority of the industry representatives interviewed. “This notification is not in line with the established international standards and is likely to have a cascading effect on the future of clinical trials in India as the flaws in the gazette could negatively impact the future growth of R&D as well as development of low-cost high-quality medicines in the country,” observed Assocham in its communication addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on behalf of the pharma industry.

Bringing up baby, British royal style

Keeping their offspring out of the spotlight could prove a test even for the media-savvy young royals. RUTH HOLMES feedback@postnoon.com LONDON: The imminent birth of Britain’s royal baby will be announced on a golden easel and hailed by cannon fire — but royalwatchers say that behind the pomp Prince William and Catherine will be trying to balance tradition with modern parenting. The couple, both 31, have been widely portrayed as a 21st century couple who will deal with dirty diapers and sleepless nights like any ordinary mother and father around the world. But observers warn that even if they avoid dispatching the baby to the nursery like earlier generations of “The Firm”, the responsibilities and pressures of monarchy will still get in the way. “We keep being told that their parents want to give them a normal upbringing,” Patrick Jephson, former private secretary to William’s late mother Princess Diana, told AFP. “In some vague sense we are supposed to approve of the notion. But I’m afraid the truth is they’re not normal and never can be normal.” Britain’s royal family are famed for their stiff upper lip, but by all accounts in the generations before William that was largely forged by childhoods spent with nannies and in boarding schools instead of with parents. Reports that Kate and her baby would spend the first six weeks at her parents’ home fuelled the idea that Britain’s newest royal might begin life like any other child, although security fears have raised doubts over whether this will happen. While the Middletons are millionaires, they earned their money in business and appear to be a close-knit family with none of the formality of the royals. Until now, William and Kate have been living relatively modestly in a remote farmhouse in

Anglesey, north Wales, where William works as a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue helicopter pilot. The couple will eventually move into Kensington Palace in London, but renovations — which have already cost taxpayers £1 million — are not expected to be finished before the birth. Wherever the baby first lays its head, commentators agree that William and Kate will want to be “hands on” parents.

‘WILLIAM WILL WANT TO CHANGE NAPPIES’

Kate is seen as a natural with children. She once toyed with the idea of setting up a junior fashion label, and spent her second wedding anniversary visiting a children’s hospice. But whether she chooses to break with royal tradition and forego a full-time nanny remains to be seen. “Although Kate has professed that she doesn’t want nannies, and wants to do it on her own,

Pick

that’s before she’s facing six months of sleepless nights,” Claire Irvin, editor-in-chief of Mother & Baby magazine, told AFP. “But she is quite modern and doesn’t seem to want huge entourages of help.” Phil Dampier, a royal reporter for 28 years and author of What’s in the Queen’s Handbag, believes the couple may have little choice. He expects William will soon increase his royal duties, as his elderly grandparents Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip ease theirs, and says the couple will need support at home. “William will want to do his share of changing the nappies,” he said, but added: “I think they will have to have a full-time nanny even if they don’t want one.” Gone are the days, however, when royal children seldom saw their parents and lived in virtual seclusion. But with the global appetite for William and Kate’s story showing no sign of fading, keeping their offspring out of the spotlight could prove a test even for the media-savvy young royals. “The interest in this baby is already absolutely off the scale,” said Dampier.

LAC MEGANTIC: Officials in Canada said Sunday they have located five bodies so far in their grim search for victims from the catastrophic derailment of an oil-laden cargo train, and expect to find as many as 40 more. Firemen in this picturesque Quebec lakeside town finally managed Sunday to put out a raging inferno sparked more than a day earlier when a driverless freight train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded, sending fireballs skyward and unleashing a wall of fire that tore through downtown homes and businesses. “The flames, the fires all have been put out now. We did it," fire chief Denis Lauzon told a press briefing. That meant police finally would be able to conduct a

BODH GAYA BLASTS

Karmapa calls for calm

Tibetan religious head and the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje Monday appealed to his followers to remain calm and refrain from escalation of violence. DHARAMSALA: Tibetan religious head and the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje Monday appealed to his followers to remain calm and refrain from escalation of violence in the wake of the blasts in Bihar’s Bodh Gaya town. “I was deeply saddened to hear of the senseless violence perpetrated Sunday at the Mahabodhi temple and its environs in Bodh Gaya,” the Karmapa, a frequent visitor at the Mahabodhi temple, said in a statement here. homage to Lord Buddha and his teachings. “As yet, we do not know why or by whom this sacred site was targeted. However, I am convinced that, as Buddhists, in responding to this situation, the best homage we can pay to Lord Buddha is to uphold his teachings on love and ahimsa (nonviolence),” said the 28-year-old monk. “I ask you, therefore, to remain calm and refrain from any further escalation of the violence. I offer my prayers for the victims and their families, and call on Buddhists everywhere to

truly embrace the wisdom of Lord Buddha’s teachings in all that we do.” Nine blasts took place between 5.30 am and 6 am Sunday at the over two millennia old Mahabodhi temple, annually visited by millions of pilgrims from all over the world, especially from Sri Lanka, China, Japan and the Southeast Asia region. The blasts injured two monks but did not damage the temple. The government termed it a terror attack as the National Investigating Agency (NIA) began its probe. The Karmapa has been residing in the Gyuto Tantric University and Monastery on the outskirts of this town, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, since he escaped to India in January 2000.

suspected Indian Mujahideen man Anwar Hussain Mallik has been arrested from the Nadia district in West Bengal and will be questioned on the multiple blasts. Mallik was arrested yesterday with Rs. 1.9 lakh in fake currency. The police allege that he had supplied explosives for the 2010 Pune German Bakery blasts which killed 17 people.

Beef up security, states told

T

he central government has asked the states to heighten security at Buddhist places of worship and Tibetan settlements in view of the serial blasts at Mahabodhi temple in Bihar’s Bodh Gaya, officials said Sunday. Official sources said that the home ministry had sent an advisory to states that adequate security must be provided to Buddhist places of worships and Tibetian settlements in the wake of blasts at the temple and violence between Rohingya Muslims and Buddhists in Myanmar. They said the advisory has asked the states to bolster intelligence and personnel strength at police stations whose domain includes Buddhist population and shrines. The sources said that the advisory lays emphasis on security measures in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Pune and Bangalore. Nine near-coordinated explosions shook the serenity of the world-renowned Mahabodhi temple complex in Bihar’s Bodh Gaya early Sunday.

Gulls feasting on whales? It is happening In recent years the seagulls have been wreaking havoc. They used to feed on refuse tossed overboard by fishing boats. Now, they have added whales to their menu in frenzied waves of pecking. ANTOINE RAUX Agence France-Presse VALDES PENINSULA: It’s a weird, lopsided fight if ever there was one: seagulls divebombing to attack and feed on the fat of 50-ton whales and their babies. ry as to why it is happening is there is an overpopulation of seagulls — in this case, the kelp gull. Whales use these Argentine waters to mate, give birth and nurse their young, and what with all the airborne harassment, whales are taking new evasive measures as they swim, separating mothers from their calves and denying them nourishment. Whales do not have lips for sucking, so mothers expel a thick

milk in the water for their calves to ingest. The babies need more than 100 litres of it per day. “With each attack this process is interrupted, and it is a crucial moment for the growth of the whales,” said Mariano Sironi, director of studies at Argentina’s Institute for Whale Conservation. In 2012, Sironi tallied 116 whales found dead in these waters, and all but three of them were calves. That mortality rate was up 100 per cent from the previous year. Every year, for six months starting in June, hundreds of whales come to waters off the Valdes Peninsula to reproduce.

Often, the mobile industry tends to have lot of things in its bucket and offers to its customers, either in terms of technology or services; even if the customer may not have the need. However, we took the opposite way and want to remain focused and serve the core mass market needs.” According to him, a typical mass market customer wants mobility in the area within a

radius of 10-15km to serve their voice needs. He also may need relevant services like text messaging or cricket score. The young crowd needs data and social networking. When asked about their focus areas, he said, “In this hyper competitive market, we want to focus on best service and distribution of services like recharge, connections, etc. We don’t want inefficiency passing onto the customer as a liability, either by way of higher costs or service quality. Solving these issues at our end holds the key to providing ultralow cost services to the customer. We want to be profitable and do not want to have any debt. This will help the company grow faster and get closer to its customers.” He said that the low price offering is driving the price-conscious customer to choose Uninor over its competitors. vA lot of customers have dual-sim phones and they use each sim for a different purpose. Due to which, the cost per minute is 25-30 per cent lesser than our counterparts. Our focus is more on cost per minute and the revenues that we generate for that minute.” On the future of the industry, he said, “The industry is growing. There are over 80 crore sim cards in the market out of which many are used in dual-sim phones. The reality is that only 50 per cent of the population in the country own a mobile phone, which leaves a lot of scope for growth.”

ACTION PLAN

ROBIN MILLARD Agence France-Presse Since Britain's new royal baby will be third in line to the throne but a legal wrangle in the Commonwealth is holding up new law ensuring that a female heir cannot be overtaken by a younger brother. Prince William and his wife Catherine's baby, due this month, will be born directly in line to become king or queen, after Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son Prince Charles, and then William, his eldest son. Ending male primogeniture had been talked about for decades but William and Kate's wedding in April 2011 jolted governments into action to ensure that if the couple's first-born is a girl, its gender could not keep it from the throne. The premiers of Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the 12 other countries where Queen Elizabeth reigns reached agreement in principle at the last Commonwealth summit in October 2011. The law change must be unanimous and identical in each country to avoid ending up with different monarchs in different states. It can only come into effect when all the realms have ratified it. But the process is not proving as straightforward as had been hoped, with challenges thrown up by Quebec in Canada and Queensland in Australia. "It's a pretty complicated operation in which 16 countries in all have to change their law or their constitution," Robert Hazell, director of the Constitution Unit at University College London, told AFP.

egetable prices are rocketing. We can’t say like Morarji Desai did when he said after onion prices shot through the roof, “Stop eating onion. Nothing will happen. Prices will come down.” Today the mainstay vegetables’ prices are soaring. Those in power and their shenanigans will tell you of bad crops, tricky weather and hoarding as reasons. These hackneyed explanations could fool an illiterate public. The government, however, forgets that we live in the information age and people are not as unaware as they were 50 years ago. We are, by all indications, going towards a food crisis, and the volatile prices are just a straw in the wind. The economic theory of demand and supply still stands good but it does not explain fully the situation we are in today. At the core of the issue are two major factors, which the government of the day will not tell you — unbridled population and annexing farmlands. Land under crops is shrinking every day mainly because of the weapon the ruling elite has got from China — special economic zone. If you examine each of these projects, you will know the eulogy is another name of grabbing land from peasants.

UN warns that India is galloping towards an untenable population growth. The present government winks at the issue. It means they are postponing a disaster for tomorrow. It is pertinent that the family planning is renamed family welfare, which has jettisoned the small family norm. This is just to please a couple of communities, which do not subscribe to limiting the size of the family. The other, and more serious, is the issue of land grab. “Losing land to the SEZ project has significantly reduced the farmland in the affected villages and also brought with it severe pressures on employment, livelihoods and food security for the villagers. While some of the land losers have become farmers with smaller land holdings, many have become landless. The conversion of farmland for non-farm

uses has also reduced farm labour opportunities for the people who had no non-farm skills. The SEZ has caused fragmentation of land holding in the villages as the land losers have been forced to buy small pieces of land from neighbours. It forced change in favour of occupational shifts, indebtedness and migration. The inability of some to adapt is apparent. The case of Polepally stands as a warning against taking such claims at face value. It illustrates how an acquisition process that appears defensible on paper can go

15

black, indicating ‘dusk’ since they are at the end of their stint at the college while juniors assembled in yellow or orange synonymous with the rising sun. “There were around 200 girls who had come for the audition, among which 30 were selected for the finale. Dil Dosti Dance star Shantanu Maheshwari aka Swayam was one of the judges and the other judge was former MTV CEO Mohit Agarwal. At the end of the long, thrilling three rounds, Kunain Usman was declared the winner and endowed with the Miss Fresher’s title. All the other five finalists were also given titles,” Suneela Madhur, Villa Marie professor said. While tension was in the air, dance groups like Battamese girls, Dancing Divas, Yester Queens, and Leading Ladies kept the entertainment quotient high throughout the day at Villa Marie College. “There were as many as 11 groups shaking their legs for the

event. There were also seniors who paid tribute to dancing queen Madhuri Dixit and other yesteryear actresses through their performances,” she says. When freshers at Villa Marie donned red and orange, juniors at St Francis College turned up in colours depicting the five elements of nature — fire, water, air, sky and earth. “Unlike the previous years, we couldn’t arrange for a celebrity judge for the fresher’s party this year. Three girls were crowned the winners at the event. Juniors had a dress code to follow, which were various hues of the five elements,” Tania, one of the final year students at the college, said. The highlight of the party at St Francis College was the welcome dance in which seniors danced to a medley of songs including Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani numbers, Spanish, Arabic and African chartbusters. All in all, these events had girls taking centre stage, entertaining, performing and accepting the newly arrived batch members as their own.

UNIVERSITY OF THE WEEK

U of T

or University of Toronto is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, situated on the grounds that surround Queen's Park. It was founded by royal charter in 1827 as King's College, the first institution of higher learning in Upper Canada. Originally controlled by the Church of England, the university assumed the present name in 1850 upon becoming a secular institution.

TRENDING...

In surveying almost 700 high school students in the US who were preparing for the ACT or SAT, it is being found that 60% said it is “very” or “somewhat important” to them that they attend a college with a racially diverse student body. At the same time, 82% of students said they wanted to attend a college with a “socially conscious campus community”, making this factor more important to students than a strong sports programme or colourful Greek life. Still, despite students’ desires to see more diversity on their campuses, past research has shown that collegeaged Americans are opposed to including race as a factor in the college admissions process.

Stomach this!

19

Everyone remembers their stomach at least thrice a day when hunger strikes, but its functioning and anatomy remain a mystery to many. ABSORPTION

THE MUSCULAR SAC

T

hough absorption is primarily a function of the small intestine, the stomach can also directly absorb certain food stuffs. Examples include water, medication, alcohol, caffeine and amino acids.

T

he stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. It receives food from the oesophagus, breaks down the particles with the help of enzymes and churning, and passes the digested material on to the small intestine.

ENZYME ACTION

T

he stomach secretes protein-digesting enzymes called proteases to partially digest the food. Pepsin and rennin are the main proteases present in the

stomach. Hydrochloric acid is also released, to kill bacteria and to maintain the pH at a level that the proteases can work at.

REGULATION

T

he flow of chemicals into the stomach and the passage of food through the stomach are regulated by the autonomic nervous system as well as digestive hormones like gastrin and secretin. These hormones ensure that

the stomach sends food to the intestine only when it is free. Until then, the stomach serves as a storage area.

THE AMAZING STOMACH n

n n

A normal adult human's stomach can expand to hold up to one litre of food, and in some cases, can even hold 2-3 litres. A baby's stomach can only hold 30 ml. People can, and have, survived without a stomach if it has to be removed due to some disease.

n n

n

When you blush, the lining of your stomach also turns red. The stomach produces a new layer of mucus every two weeks so it doesn’t digest itself. The size of the stomach does not correlate with weight or weight control.

Argus follows how much you move, walk, run or cycle through the accelerometer. It helps you log what you eat, how you sleep, how much water and coffee you drink and how much you exercise. The idea is that it’s a catchall, life-logging app where people can store all of their activity in one place without having to switch from app to app.

The disease is a neoplastic skin disease, it can be considered as an early stage or intraepidermal form of squamous cell carcinoma. It was named after John T Bowen. Erythroplasia of Queyrat is a form of squamous cell carcinoma in situ arising on the glans or prepuce, possibly induced by HPV. Causes of BD include solar damage, arsenic, immunosuppression, viral infection and chronic skin injury and dermatoses.

Your pet isn't the only one in the house with a shedding problem. Humans shed about 6,00,000 particles of skin every hour. That works out to about 1.5 pounds each year, so the average person will lose around 105 pounds of skin by age 70.

Antonia Novello was a Puerto Rican physician and public health administrator. She was a vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. She was the first female surgeon general of the United States, as well as the first of Hispanic origin. During her time in office, she helped launch the Healthy Children Ready to Learn Initiative and spoke out against underage drinking.

They influence relationships between the sexes,” said Lakshmi Puri, Acting Head of UN Women.

The Yeshwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) launches a unique course designed for domestic helps starting July 15 and already has taken over 400 students on the rolls, said varsity spokesperson Shrinivas Belsaray Sunday. “The course is aimed at helping them overcome professional hassles they encounter mainly due to lack of even basic education. It will

be conducted through four YCMOU centres in Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nashik and Hingoli for a nominal fee of `300, including all learning material,” Belsaray told IANS. Already, there are several welfare associations of domestic helps which are engaged in various productive activities for their members, many of whom face difficulties due to lack of awareness and education, said YCMOU registrar Prakash Atkare. YCMOU Vice-Chancellor R Krishnakumar took a decision to initiate this unique course for the domestic helps from the current academic year. Among welfare associations are Vidarbha Domestic

Servants Union and Nashik District Domestic Servants Union, which are collaborating with the YCMOU to facilitate and popularise the course among their members. The one-year course in English, Marathi and Hindi will cover language and communication skills, health science, mathematics, general knowledge and small-scale training, Belsaray said. According to official estimates, there are over a million domestic workers in Mumbai, a majority of them women from various age groups. Depending on the kind of work, a casual domestic worker can earn an average of `1,000 per household. IANS

t is not everyday that you come across people who have studied in one of the best universities in the world trying their luck in films. You either have to be obsessed about your dreams or plain stupid to give up everything to pursue acting in Indian films, especially after graduating from a university like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Kavita Srinivasan, who graduated from MIT with a degree in architecture and city planning, falls in the former category. Ask her what made her leave everything behind in the US, she reveals, “I have been dancing and singing all my life. I guess there’s a certain inclination towards arts when you are born in a Tamil Brahmin family. After I graduated from MIT, I moved to Los Angeles where I enrolled in acting classes, in addition to my job. After doing a fair share of acting in plays and doing commercials, I wanted to get into it completely and give it a serious shot.” Her father’s job took her to several countries including Zambia, Papua New Guinea, USA, Nepal and India. “Maybe it’s because I have been travelling to different countries all my life, I’m fairly open to changes in my life. Even when I moved to Mumbai, it wasn’t a big culture shock but it took me a long time to adjust in a new city because I didn’t know anyone. Luckily, I joined a theatre group which helped me meet new people and learn more about acting.” She’s all set to make her debut in Telugu in Sri Prawin’s upcoming film Kaalicharan. “I’m playing a character named Kalavathi. From my perspective, it’s a very bold character, who doesn’t go by the rules. She’s not a bad person but lives an uncoventional life. I was asked to put on weight for my role, but the most difficult part was the gestures that I was supposed to display to make the character more real. I have even dubbed my lines in the film, although I can’t speak Telugu,” she reveals. Apart from Kaalicharan, she’ll soon be seen in a Tamil and another Hindi film. Ask her what her goals are, now that her dream of acting in films have come true, she confesses, “I want to keep pushing the boundaries of acting and play characters even after the so-called "expiry date" for female actors that exists in the mainstream cinema. My role models are Kamal Hassan and Meryl Streep, who keep reinventing themselves for each role. No one can guess what will come out of their seemingly bottomless pit of talent and age doesn't prevent them from getting fantastic and unique roles.”

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

CINE BYTES AND

JUSTIN BIEBER SELENA GOMEZ back together I for holiday romance f Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez don’t want anyone to know they’re probably dating again, they’re not doing a very good job of hiding it. Mutual friends Alfredo Flores, Jas Prince and Lil Twist all shared evidence via social media that the on-and-off couple is on again. Bieber and Gomez can be spotted in the shadows at the tail end of Prince’s July 4th Instagram video. Bieber’s pal Flores also posted a Fourth of July Instagram video featuring Gomez (without Bieber), but Prince’s tweets suggest Flores and Bieber were hanging out over the holiday. And Twist Instagram-ed separate pics of Bieber and Gomez only hours apart.

TOUR DE FRANCE

Martin wins ‘crazy’ 9th stage Dan Martin came over the finish after beating Dane Jakob Fuglsang in a two-up sprint to claim his maiden win in the race. JUSTIN DAVIS Agence France-Presse BAGNERES-DE-BIGORRE: Irishman Dan Martin won the ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday after a dramatic day of racing left Team Sky and yellow jersey holder Chris Froome sorely exposed to rivals. Martin, the nephew of Irish great Stephen Roche, came over the finish with his arms in triumph after beating Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) in a two-up sprint to claim his maiden win on the race. Froome arrived 20sec later alongside rivals Alejandro Valverde, Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans but notably without any Sky teammates, including key mountain helper Richie Porte. From sitting second overnight at 51sec adrift, the Australian dropped to the nether regions of the general classification after finishing 17min 59sec in arrears. Valverde, whose Movistar team were protagonists on the last of the day’s five categorised climbs, moved up one place to second to sit 1min 25sec behind Froome, with Spain’s two-time winner Contador now sixth but still 1:51 behind. Froome admitted: “That was one of the hardest days I’ve ever had on a bike. I

POCONO 400

Dixon wins Pocono 400 LONG POND: New Zealand’s Scott Dixon won his 30th career IndyCar race on Sunday, using superior fuel mileage to capture the Pocono 400 and lead a firstever podium sweep for team owner Chip Ganassi. Two-time season champion Dixon passed runner-up Charlie Kimball with 28 laps remaining and held off the American over the last laps, nursing his fuel to the finish line as they passed slower traffic over the 2.5-mile triangular course. “Going into this morning I was not thinking we could win,” Dixon said. “Fuel mileage was the big key. We still had speed and we were running up front all day.” Kimball, who started 12th in the field of 24, matched his best finish with second in the 160-lap feature with Scotland’s Dario Franchitti, who began 20th, edging Australian Will Power for third.

was left on my own and it was a pretty difficult position to be in.” After what he termed a “crazy” second day in the Pyrenees, Martin said there had been a concerted effort to shake up proceedings. Having also won stage nine at the Tour of Spain, the 26-year-old rode out of Bagneres determined. But when Garmin’s efforts to get him into a decisive break via

On the climb to the summit an isolated Froome was tested when Nairo Quintana produced four separate bursts of acceleration. waves of early attacks proved futile, he was forced to changed tack. On the 9.9km climb to the final summit, the Houquette d’Ancizan, an isolated Froome’s resolve was tested when little Colombian climber Nairo Quintana (Movistar) produced four separate bursts of acceleration. The Briton ultimately resisted and, sensing “hesitation” among Froome’s rivals to test the race leader further, Martin attacked. Fuglsang followed and

the pair crested the summit with a 40sec lead. They held off the chasers on the 30km descent to the finish, where Martin’s burst of speed inside the final few hundred metres proved too much for the Dane. “I targeted this stage at the start of the race and the whole team gave it everything to get me into a breakaway,” said Martin, who is enjoying a breakout season in which he has won the Tour of Catalunya and Liege-BastogneLiege. “It was crazy. We were attacking without thinking about it. Then, when I found myself on the final climb I saw a bit of hesitation in the group of favourites and thought I’ve got nothing to lose. “Luckily Jakob came with me and we managed to hold them off. I was confident in the final, I knew I could produce the speed I needed but after such a hard stage you’re never sure.”

AMERICA’S CUP

Emirates wins first race by forfeit

Luna Rossa boycotted the opener in a rules protest, the Italians refusing to race until an international jury rules on its protest against a late change to a rudder design rule. SAN FRANCISCO: An America’s Cup yachting event already marred by tragedy was stung again in its first race Sunday when Emirates Team New Zealand won by forfeit Sunday over Italy’s Luna Rossa on San Francisco Bay. Luna Rossa boycotted the challengers’ Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin opener in a rules protest, the Italians refusing to race until an international jury rules on its protest against a late change to a rudder design rule. “We have been forced into this position,” Luna Rossa skipper Max Sirena said Sunday. “We did not come to San Francisco to watch races, but to race.” But as a result, the Kiwi squad aboard Aotearoa sailed the seven-leg course alone, completing almost 16 nautical miles in 46 minutes, 27 seconds. The crew averaged 20 knots with a top speed of 35 knots. A tweet from Team New Zealand during the race said,

“Half way through race 1. No surprises to be leading in a race with ourselves.” It was a lackluster start for an event set to last until late September, when holders Oracle will face one of three challengers in the America’s Cup proper. “We had a discussion with

Emirates Team New Zealand about sailing the shorter course, but it was their wish to sail the full course,” regatta director Iain Murray said. Sirena says Murray exceeded his authority to impose some of the 37 safety rules created in the wake of British sailor Andrew

Simpson’s death in May without approval from all of the competing teams. Simpson died in a training accident in which the AC72 catamaran of Swedish syndicate Artemis Racing capsized, and Murray has held firm that rule changes aimed at preventing another such tragedy were within his authority. Rivals have complained that Oracle was handed an advantage by the rudder design rule change because it has trained with the new design. An international jury is expected to rule on the rules protest this week. “By racing under these rules, enforced by the regatta director with race notices 185 and 189, we would somehow silently approve them. This is not the case,” Sirena said. “Therefore we have no choice but to stay ashore until the international jury has reached a decision on the matter.” AFP

GERMAN F1 GP REVIEW

TRI-NATION SERIES

We didn’t need last stop: Kimi The Lotus driver stopped for a set of softs 10 laps from the finish.

NURBURGRING: Kimi Raikkonen believes he may not have required his final pit stop — and that it could have cost him victory in Sunday’s German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. The Lotus driver stopped for a set of softs 10 laps from the finish and, despite reclaiming second from his team-mate Frenchman Romain Grosjean, he finished one second behind the victorious home hero German Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull.

Raikkonen said: “I could run longer and we had to think about if we should try to run until the end. “But I had massive problem with the radio. I could hear the team but they couldn’t hear me, apart from at two corners. “I wonder if we should have gone to the end as the tyres were OK." Raikkonen agreed with Vettel’s suggestion that the lead would have changed had the race been any longer. AFP

GREENBRIER CLASSIC

Blixt takes on four and comes up trumps

In a final round that was halted for more than three hours by a thunderstorm and ended in twilight gloom, Blixt fired a three-under par 67 for the third day in a row. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS: Sweden’s Jonas Blixt outdueled four rivals in near darkness Sunday to win the $6.3 million Greenbrier Classic by two strokes for his second career US PGA Tour title. In a final round that was halted for more than three hours by a thunderstorm and ended in twilight gloom, Blixt fired a three-under par 67 for the third day in a row to finish on 13under 267, his first top-10 PGA Tour finish of the year. “It has been a bad year for me but I just pulled it off," a tearful Blixt said. “I can’t believe it. I’m just really happy." Blixt, whose only prior PGA victory came at last year’s Frys.com Open, won the $1.13 million top prize and clinched a berth in next year’s Masters, a

huge feat for a golfer who has never played in a major championship. “A dream come true," Blixt said. “I watched (the Masters) when I was a kid. I always wanted to play there. It’s a special place, almost like a religious experience to be there. To play there, I’ve just got no words for it. “It’s so many dreams come true. It’s one week and the whole year turns around. It’s really special." Australians Steven Bowditch and Matt Jones and Americans Johnson Wagner and Jimmy

Walker shared second on 269. The Aussies both fired 68s while Walker shot 71 and Wagner fired a 73, but none could catch Blixt over the final holes. “I pulled off some really good shots and had some birdie putts I can make," Blixt said. “It felt awesome. I had my Agame. I got a lot of good breaks. It’s just really cool to finish on top." An afternoon thunderstorm stopped play for t h r e e h o u r s and 10

minutes and rain continued to drench the 7,287-yard layout even after golfers returned to the course. Blixt, second last month at the European Tour’s Swedish Masters, birdied the par-four fifth and fired back-to-back birdies at the ninth and 10th holes. The 29-year-old Swede, who missed the cut in eight of his 16 prior PGA Tour starts this season, missed a six-foot par putt at the 13th but Wagner missed a six-foot par putt on the same hole to join Blixt on 12-under with Bowditch, Walker and Jones on their heels as the sun began to set. Walker, seeking his first Tour title, settled for his best PGA Tour finish, improving on his share of third place from this year at Pebble Beach. AFP

Windies, Sri Lanka match abandoned The Sri Lankans at 60 for three were seeking to recover from a wobbly opening. PORT OF SPAIN: Torrential showers forced the abandonment of play after 19 overs of the fifth match of the Tri-Nation Series between the West Indies and Sri Lanka at the Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday. Weather permitting, the match will continue on the reserve day, Monday, with the Sri Lankans at 60 for three and seeking to recover from a wobbly opening after they were put in to bat by West Indies stand-in captain Kieron Pollard. Left-handers Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne were left to repair the early damage done to their batting line-up by the Barbadian fast bowling pair of Kemar Roach and Jason Holder who exploited the humid conditions and a pitch offering disconcerting pace and bounce. Under increasingly overcast conditions, Sangakkara and Thirimanne worked to stem the tide, eliminating risks and quietly accumulating runs while also benefitting from the surprising indiscipline of the three fastest bowlers in the West Indies armoury as 16 wides and two noballs helped the visitors along. Disappointingly for the match and the near full-house of over 15,000 spectators, the expected showers arrived at mid-morning, increasing in sustained intensity to leave the ground waterlogged. With no indication of a break in the weather, umpires Nigel Llong and Joel Wilson had little option but to declare an abandonment of play at 1.30pm. AFP

The 2010 US Open winner finished the tournament with

a nine-under-par total of 275 as an initially tense final round eventually became a one man show with McDowell cantering home to pick up a winner’s cheque of 500,000 euros. Sterne settled for second on five-under-par 279. Englishman Graeme Storm and Spaniard Eduardo De La Riva were paired together for the final round and both men fired twounder-par 69s to claim a share of third spot on four under. “Coming into this week has been a bit strange for me, too many missed cuts and a little bit inconsistent," said McDowell.

WIMBLEDON REVIEW

ARISE, SIR ANDY?

Every single national daily devoted its front page to Murray’s straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic, with many calling for him to be knighted. LONDON: British newspapers were in raptures on Monday after Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win, with several calling for him to receive a knighthood for ending the country’s 77-year wait for a men’s champion. Every single national daily devoted its front page to Murray’s straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic on Sunday, with almost all of them splashing huge pictures of the 26-year-old brandishing the trophy in the blazing sun. The Times newspaper led the calls for Murray to be knighted. “Arise Sir Andrew, knight of the holy grail,” it said. “Impossibly, dreamily, unbelievably and yet somehow almost easily, somehow almost inevitably, Andy Murray won the Men’s Singles final at Wimbledon yesterday,” it said. The Times came swathed in a huge souvenir wraparound picture of Murray surrounded by a sea of spectators as he climbed into the families’ box at Wimbledon’s Centre Court, with the headline: “The History Boy”. The 77-year gap between the last British winner, Fred Perry, was an “awfully long time”, it said, noting that the was the “first Brit to win the title in short trousers”, as in Perry’s time male tennis players wore long ones. The Daily Mail reported that Murray would be recommended

a Wimbledon champion, saying: “After 77 years, the wait is over.” “The shame has passed. Frustration has been banished. Wimbledon fortnight is no longer a ritual of hope and despair. Centre Court has shed its inhibitions,” it said. The Daily Mirror’s front page headline said Murray had “History In His Hands”, with a picture of him lifting the golden cup skywards. The Mirror also asked if Murray would now propose to his long-time girlfriend Kim Sears, who has followed him around the world supporting

It said that sources in Prime Minister David Cameron’s Downing Street office said the government would pass his name to Britain’s Honours Committee in the same way it had done with cyclist Bradley

Wiggins after he won the Tour de France last year. It noted that Queen Elizabeth II herself had sent her congratulations to Murray on his victory. The Mail also featured a “glorious picture pull-out souvenir plus Murray victory poster” with nine pages of coverage in the front section of the paper, normally dedicated to news. The Sun, Britain’s largest sell-

ing newspaper, typically punned on Murray’s first name with its headline “And of Hope and Glory”. “Finally, after 77 years, 15 PMs, three monarchs... Brit man wins Wimbo”, the tabloid said. It also came with a pullout section saying that Murray had been “Born to Wim”. The Daily Telegraph also focused on Britain’s long wait for

him at tournaments for years. The Daily Express dubbed him “Magical Murray”. Both the Guardian and the Independent newspapers both opted for the simple headline “Champion” over pictures of Murray with the trophy that covered the entire front page. So did the Scotsman, which bills itself as the national newspaper of Scotland.

Tragedy-scarred Dunblane basks in Murray’s glory Murray and Dunblane share a tortured past after the town was hit by tragedy in March 1996 when Thomas Hamilton shot 16 pupils and a teacher dead at the Scot’s primary school.

LONDON: Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon triumph sparked scenes of wild celebration in his tragedy-scarred home town of Dunblane on Sunday.

And as Murray celebrated his moment of triumph in front of an ecstatic Centre Court crowd, there were even more frenzied scenes back home in Scotland.

Murray and Dunblane share a tortured past after the town was hit by tragedy in March 1996 when Thomas Hamilton shot 16 pupils and a teacher dead at the Scot’s primary school. The 26-year-old, who had to hide in the school during the massacre, broke down in tears when discussing it during a recent television interview. But, despite now living in Oxshott, south of London, Murray has never hidden his love of the town and was given a hero’s reception there after winning a gold medal at last year’s Olympics. Fans packed themselves into the town’s community centre and roared their support as they watched the final on television.

That man has brought this community closer together. Dunblane has been deserted today because everyone was watching the match. Leigh Austin Murray fan The spectators at the Dunblane Centre ranged in age from pre-school to pensioners. Many were draped in

Saltire flags, while others wore homemade head scarves with “Andy” written on them. They shouted his name in chorus and jumped up and down when he won the final point of the match. The bar at the Dunblane Hotel was also full with people being forced to stand in the doorway desperate to get a look at the match on the screen. A barman was wearing a tshirt with the image of Andy Murray, a tennis ball and the message “C’mon Andy”. John Irvine, 69, travelled from Dalry in North Ayrshire with his wife Annette to watch the match. “We’ve watched him since he appeared on the scene as a scrawny young player. It was electrifying.”

Nigeria overpowers Ivory Coast

A brace from Sunday Mba helped Nigeria trounce nine-man Ivory Coast 4-1 in Kaduna and virtually seal a place in the final for the first time. DAVID LEGGE Agence France-Presse JOHANNESBURG: Nigeria overpowered Ivory Coast and Morocco shocked title-holders Tunisia this weekend in 2014 African Nations Championship qualifiers. A brace from star midfielder Sunday Mba helped Nigeria trounce nine-man Ivory Coast 4-1 in Kaduna and virtually seal a place in the finals for the first time.

Morocco are equally well-placed to compete in South Africa next January after a 1-0 away win over Tunisia via a late Abdessamad Mbarki goal. Mali, Senegal and Burkina Faso built leads at home in other matches while a FIFA ban forced Cameroon to cancel a fixture against Gabon. The Nigerian ‘Super Eagles’ are strongly positioned to progress in a competition restricted to footballers playing in their country of birth.

BUNDESLIGA PREVIEW

Coach Stephen Keshi took eight local stars to the Confederations Cup in Brazil last month and all were in the squad to face the Ivorians. A home victory was expected in the northern city of Kaduna, but the margin must have thrilled even hard-to-please former national team captain Keshi. Ivory Coast did not help themselves by having Roger Assale and Baresi Gloudeaou sent off in the second half.

‘ROBIN HOOD’ Klopp aims to rob Bayern

While Bayern have brought in Pep Guardiola as head coach and signed Mario Goetze, Klopp says Borussia will put up a fight. BERLIN: Coach Jurgen Klopp has said described Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund as the ‘Robin Hood’ characters of the Bundesliga, up against all-conquering champions Bayern Munich. Dortmund enjoyed a 9-1 win a home in a charity friendly against a team of celebrities on Saturday and play European champions Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup on July 27. Bayern swept aside allcomers last season, becoming the first German team to win the treble of European, league and cup titles and beat Dortmund 2-1 in the Champions League final.

While Bayern have brought in ex-Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola as head coach and signed Dortmund’s Germany star Mario Goetze, Klopp says Borussia will put up a fight. He used the analogy of Dortmund playing the role of heroic mythical English outlaw Robin Hood role in their battle with Bayern, in the role of his powerful nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham. “We have a bow and arrow and if we aim accurately, we can hit our target,” Klopp told Sunday’s edition of daily Die Welt. “It feels like Bayern have a bazooka and the possibility that they will hit their targets

has clearly grown, but nevertheless, Robin Hood had some success.” Klopp said, based on current form, the Bundesliga title would not be taken from Bayern next season, “but that has never stopped us in the last few years from at least trying”. Having started pre-season training with his team last week, Klopp has observed a “certain strength and greed” in the Dortmund ranks having won nothing last season. Borussia have strengthened their squad with Gabon’s attacking all-rounder PierreEmerick Aubameyang from St Etienne and Greece defender Sokratis from Werder Bremen.

MLS

Henry part of All-Stars NEW YORK: French star Thierry Henry was among 10 players named Sunday as members of the Major League Soccer All-Stars squad that will face Italy’s AS Roma in the MLS AllStar Game on July 31 at Kansas City. Henry, a 35-year-old striker for New York who helped France to the 1998 World Cup, has six goals in 17 matches this year for the Red Bulls. He was a former Arsenal, Juventus and Barcelona standout before his 2010 US move. Peruvian goalkeeper Raul Fernandez of FC Dallas, Canadian national team midfielder Will Johnson and French defender Aurelien Collin of Kansas City were the other nonUS players voted into the lineup by MLS supporters. Chicago midfielder Mike Magee was joined on the squad by five from the US national team — Chris Wondolowski, Brad Davis, Omar Gonzalez, Graham Zusi and Matt Besler.
