BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING…

Over the past few days, there has been a lot of outrage over the National Security Agency (NSA) spying on US citizens and recently, several newspapers claimed that NSA has been gathering intelligence from various countries across the world to prevent terrorist activities. On the other hand, this theme has already been explored by several filmmakers and TV series producers for several decades now. We take a look at 10 such movies and TV series P16&17 that are based on government spying.

Girl gets Casanova arrested When she refused to marry him, he allegedly threatened her and posted her pictures with vulgar messages on FB. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: A gutsy young working girl who found that a youth she befriended happened to be a Casanova, dumped him, but he persisted with threats and vulgar SMS. The vexed girl and her parents approached the police with evidence of obscene messages and got him arrested. The man is in prison now. KABUL: Militants launched a suicide attack near Kabul airport shortly after dawn on Monday, taking over a building which security forces attempted to storm as blasts and gunfire rocked the Afghan capital. Loud explosions and bursts of small-arms fire erupted for at least 90 minutes and were ongoing, with the US embassy sounding its "duck and cover" alarm and its loudspeakers warning that the alarm was not a drill. "An explosion... occurred after which a group of suicide attackers entered a building in Qasaba road, west of Kabul airport, and started sporadic shooting," Hashmat Stanikzai, Kabul's police chief, said in a statement. Stanikzai said he was unable to confirm the exact target of the attack, but the explosions came from close to the airport on the northeast side of the city. Kabul last came under attack on May 24, when Taliban militants launched a coordinated suicide and gun attack on a compound of the International Organization for Migration. AFP

Cyclists take part in the World Naked Bike Ride to protest against cars.

MEXICO CITY: Thousands of Mexican cyclists rode naked Saturday to protest aggressive drivers and carbon emissions

from cars — and the conservativeness of central Mexico’s Jalisco state — organisers said. Some 3,000 demonstrators

nearly 2,000 bikers — naked or scantily clad — also demonstrated. Some slapped “fragile” stickers on their bodies or painted messages on their skin: “more bicycles, less pollution,” and “the city is for everyone, let bikes pass.” By stripping bare for the ride, the cyclists aimed to highlight the fragility of riders, and

the risks they face, on busy roads filled with motorised vehicles. But for the protesters in Guadalajara, it was also a chance to take a swipe at the conservative climate in that state. “It’s a very conservative city, and I believe that daring to (cycle naked) pushes beyond the limits of the Catholic sense of morality,” said bathing suitclad Lucia Escalante, participating in the rally for the first time. “That’s why it’s more important to show here that we are free,” the 27-year-old Escalante added. Jalisco, the home of tequila and mariachi music, has in recent years hosted a number of similarly provocative events, including Mexico’s biggest gay pride parade. AFP

EDUCATION

430 City ‘teaching shops’ face action

PICS FOR REPRESENTATION ONLY

Every year authorities pledge to shut unrecognised schools down but this time, they say, it is happening. PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Each year, at the beginning of the school term, the story of unrecognised schools makes headlines — ‘Hundreds of defaulting schools face shutdown,’ being the most popular. Yet, the next year, there are still as many or more schools still open for admissions, luring in as many clueless parents who are desperate to see their children studying in private, Englishmedium institutions. This year is no different. The District Education Office (DEO) reveals that there are as many as 430 unrecognised schools currently functioning within Hyderabad city

limits alone. The number is startling when compared to the number of recognised schools in Hyderabad, estimated to be around 600. But with the universal implementation of the Right to Education Act, prevarication is no longer an option. The RTE Act stipulates for only recognised schools to function in the State.

DEJA VU Their past promises were never fulfilled, but officials insist that this year, violators will finally be brought to task. “Until this year, we never had exact data about the number, status and location of these unrecognised schools. Now that we have the correct assessment, we are going to ensure they

either conform to the standards or are shut down,” says A Subbareddy, district education officer, Hyderabad. Operating out of apartment buildings and commercial complexes, with no provision for libraries, labs or playgrounds, qualified staff or security, these institutions violate all norms that define the idea of a school. A private unaided school becomes recognised by the government when it has fulfilled all the requirements (fire, building, traffic, municipal, academic, staff, safety standards) as specified in the Education Act. Most schools however commence operations and then apply for permissions. “School owners don’t bother to get any permits despite the onus being on them to procure all these certificates and produce them when we go for inspections. Most of them have nothing and instead furnish all kinds of incorrect information,” complains Raheem, who retired as Dy EO Charminar, earlier this year. Going out on a limb, the education department in the past had afforded violators the grace time of one or two years to apply for recognition. But a lack of response has the department now readying for a crack-down.

Now, every violating school will be forced to cough up a fine of `1,00,000 and then a fine of `10,000 for each day of operations. “We’ve already served legal notices to a few schools. When the rest reopen, we will wait 10 days for a response or else shut down the schools,” reiterates Subbareddy. AROUND THE

CITY

DEPT HANDICAPPED Sources however confide that it’s easier said than done. An inspection officer on the ground, says that without the support and cooperation of the police, they can do little to enforce these orders. “In my area, there’s a clerk and there’s me. How does anyone expect us to shut down a fullyfunctioning institution? Even if I have the authority, what security do I have? There’s no government order to the police asking them to co-operate with us,” says the Dy I.o.S. The only two ‘unrecognised’ schools that shut down in his area happened voluntarily. Meanwhile, hundreds of children enrolled in these schools suffer either way. If the school is shut down, they will be forced to scramble for (late) admissions

from a ‘recognised’ counterpart, spending double the time, effort and resources to secure a place. And, if it survives, they will still be ‘unrecognised’ by the government and will face problems while appearing for State board exams and so on. Jyoti Kunta, a mother of two, who has just moved to the City from Visakhapatnam, is looking for a school for her 12-year-old, and is not comforted by the declarations of the officials. “I was about to have my son enrol in a school that’s pretty well-known. At the last minute, a neighbour warned us that it didn’t have government recognition. I found out that most schools don’t. So, finally we decided to go with a big name instead, even if it was more expensive. But it was a close call,” she says. With astronomical rates and unrealistic admissions standards of established schools on the one side, poor infrastructure, substandard level of teaching and learning in government schools on the other, and now most of these mid-level schools not being legit, parents in the City will now be pressed for choices. You can check the school status at www.deohyderabad.com or on the Postnoon website.

The incident occurred near Azimchak in Patna. “All the victims were identified as residents of Jehanabad district,” police said. Hundreds gathered on the Gaya-Masaurih Highway in protest, demanding action against the owner of the car.

Four food safety officers of GHMC must conduct the impossible task of ensuring food safety standards of a City of eight million. The state government does not seem to be too conerned about implementing the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, says consumer forum officebearers. Apart from inspecting the samples of raw food items like oil and pulses, these officers also have to obey the orders of the Health Wing under GHMC in dealing with restaurants. Meanwhile, the monthly samples, which must be checked by the Food Safety Officers, has recently gone up from an average of 8 to 22. Many of the female protesters, who describe themselves as liberal and secular, say the time has come to stand up for their rights in the face of creeping infringements on their freedoms by Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP). Erdogan is accused of increasing authoritarianism and of polarising the country. Erdogan’s wife and daughters too wear the Islamic headscarf, to spark outrage for declaring that every woman should have three children.

There are side effects: difficulties in speaking and a tendency to wake suddenly from sleep. The tongue patch is the idea of Dr Nikolas Chugay, a Beverly Hills-based cosmetic surgeon, who said all patients are given an easy-to-follow liquid diet that fulfils all nutritional needs while

minimising caloric intake. Chugay charges about $2,000 for this procedure, which has yet to be approved by the FDA. Dr Chugay said that patients on his diet can only wear a tongue patch for a month at a time because after that, the patch fuses to the tongue surface. Experts have criticised the method saying that with a patch sutured onto one’s tongue “one runs the risk of getting an infection.” AGENCIES

SUICIDE NOTE

Jiah letter to beau found Police will also take the help of handwriting experts to find out whether the letter was indeed written by Jiah herself.

MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Jiah Khan’s family has found a six-page note, in which she mentioned her troubled love-affair with the son of an actor couple before committing suicide, police said. Jiah’s family members, who found the note at their house, preferred to retain the original doubting police action, but has agreed to give a notarised copy to the investigators, a police officer at Juhu police station said. The gist of the note, which is yet to be received by police, reveals the strained relationship of the actress with Suraj Pancholi, son of actor couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, the officer added. “We would seek legal experts’ opinion and an appropriate action would be initiated if required. As of now, we do not want to jump to any conclusion,” the officer said and refused to comment if the note named Suraj. Police will also take the help of handwriting experts to find out whether the letter was indeed written by Jiah herself, though the family claims that it was her handwriting.

LUCKNOW: An inspector with Uttar Pradesh police was Sunday suspended on suspicion of ordering the killing of a Class VIII student in the state capital last month, police said. The case was initially suspected to be one of mistaken identity. SSP J Ravinder Gaur said the inspector is now on the run, but the sharp shooters he had contracted for killing the 14-year-old Maaz have been arrested. Based on telephone surveillance, the two sharp shooters, Ajeet Rai and Rahul Rai, were found and arrested from Digviniya village in Azamgarh, early Sunday. The two have confessed that inspector Sanjay Rai had contracted them for killing Maaz, and had paid them `2.5 lakh for the job.

Police said Rai had hoped to implicate a frequent guest at the house of the woman, a man named Akmal, in the killing. Gaur said that Sanjay Rai, posted at the anti-human trafficking cell of the city police, had fallen in love with the cousin of Maaz. She was a trainee with UP police. She had allegedly spurned Rai’s advances. Enraged, Rai sought revenge on the woman’s family. The police is now on a lookout for the inspector, a man who, in 12 years of service, had an unblemished service record. The family of the boy who was killed said they were in shock, as Sanjay Rai, a frequent visitor, had been treated all along “like family”. Raids have been conducted at the official residence of the inspector, who has gone missing.

fter weeks of procrastination, more than 100 people from the Foodies in Hyderabad group got together to enjoy breakfast in the bylanes of Charminar. The members, mostly from Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Madhapur, met opposite Care Hospital at 6am yesterday for the Great Hyderabad Breakfast Walkathon. The event was organised by foodies Neidhi Kumaar and Avinash D, who like others in the group, were united by their passion for food. The food walkathon focused on feasting on street food offered in the heart of the Old City. After parking their cars at Hotel Shadab around 6.30am, in Ghaansi Bazaar near Charminar, the foodies walked towards their first eating spots — Govind Ki Bandi and Krishna Ki Bandi. “We had earlier told the bandi walas to prepare food for around 200 people,” says Kumaar. “The bandis are famous for butter dosas,

tawa idlis and wadas. Our first meal of the day, foodies enjoyed every bit of the same.” After devouring what the bandis had to offer, the foodies, who were now warmed up for more delicacies from the streets, started walking towards their next stop – Nimrah Bakery. “About half a kilometer from the bandis, the bakery is known for its Irani chai and biscuits,” adds Kumaar. In fact, Nimrah Bakery was awarded the ‘Best Tea in Hyderabad’ title in 2012. Needless to say, it lived up to its expectations.

We had struck a deal with the AP Tourism Board to tour the palace. They made arrangements for Irani chai and Osmania biscuits in the palace too. Neidhi Kumar Foodies in Hyderabad

The bakery, with a humble ambience, is ideal for those who appreciate freshly baked biscuits and cakes. The best time to visit is in the morning. Like all other visitors, the foodies also dug into freshlybaked Osmania biscuits, Tie biscuits, Dilkhush (buns with sweet fillings) along with the famous Irani Chai. The next stop was Rajasthani Jalebi and Namkeen Bhandar for vegetarians and Shadab for the non-vegetarians. While the vegetarians dug their teeth into freshly-made jalebis and immartis, the nonvegetarians — 90 per cent of the group — relished Shadab’s famous Chicken Nihari, Bheja fry, Zuban curry (made with goat’s tongue) and Gurda masala (kidney curry) served with Shirmal and tandoori roti. “The restaurant had prepared the curries especially for us that early in the morning,” says Kumaar. “The restaurant opens at 7am only on Sundays.” The foodies enjoyed their meal in a special hall reserved in Shadab. The feast lasted for a little more than an hour as people relaxed after a walk and

they had plenty of time on their hands before heading towards their next and last stop — Chowmallah Palace. The foodies wound up their gastronomical expedition with a tour of Chowmallah Palace and another round of Irani chai and Osmania biscuits. After eating at Rajasthani Jalebi and Namkeen Bhandar and Shadab, they drove towards the palace. The gates of the palace were opened only at 10am. “We had struck a deal with the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Board to tour the palace. They made arrangements for Irani chai and Osmania Biscuits in the palace too,” says Kumaar, adding that they are also planning a few future events in association with the tourism board. The event that involved at least six hours of eating and around one and a half kilometer of walking finally came to an end around 12.30pm. And, going by the satiated look on group members’ faces, one can safely say it was a huge success.

NSA whistleblower did it ‘for the people’ Edward Snowden, who has been working at the National Security Agency for the past four years, admitted to revealing details of a vast, secret US program to monitor Internet users. He may face criminal charges. JIM MANNION Agence France-Presse WASHINGTON: A 29-year-old government contractor revealed himself Sunday as the source who leaked details of a vast, secret US program to monitor Internet users, as the US spy chief pressed for a criminal probe. Edward Snowden, who has been working at the National Security Agency for the past four years, admitted his role in a video interview posted on the website of The Guardian, the first newspaper to publish the leaked information. “My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them,” Snowden said, speaking in Hong Kong. He said he had gone public because he could not “allow the US government to destroy privacy, Internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they’re secretly building.” A former technical assistant for the CIA, Snowden worked for the NSA as an employee of various outside contractors, including Dell and Booz Allen Hamilton. than three months” and promised to help US authorities investigate the “shocking” claim that he had leaked classified information. Snowden flew to Hong Kong on May 20 after copying the last set of documents he intended to disclose at the NSA’s office in Hawaii, the Guardian said, adding he has remained there ever since, holed up in a hotel room. Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China with its own legal rules, has an extradition treaty with the United States. The British-based Guardian said it had revealed Snowden’s identity at his own request. In a statement responding to Snowden’s decision to go public on Sunday, the office of the Director of National Intelligence said the matter had now been “referred to the Department of Justice.”

Who is Snowden? A former technical assistant for the CIA, Snowden worked for the NSA as an employee of various outside contractors, including Dell and Booz Allen Hamilton. According to the Guardian, Snowden lives a comfortable life on a salary of roughly $200,000, with a girlfriend whom he shares a home in Hawaii.

One US lawmaker, Pete King, Republican chairman of the House Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, called for Snowden’s extradition to the United States, saying he must be prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law.” The leaks published in The Guardian and The Washington Post have set off a furore, with President Barack Obama and the chief of US intelligence defending the secret programs as vital to keeping Americans safe. foreign citizens using the Internet outside the United States. A separate program, also disclosed by The Guardian, has been used to scoop up the telephone records of millions of Americans. In an interview with NBC News aired on Sunday, Clapper called the disclosures “literally gut-wrenching” and said they had caused “huge, grave damage” to US intelligence capabilities. “The NSA has filed a crimes report on this already,” he said, before Snowden’s identity was revealed. “This is someone who for whatever reason has chosen to violate a sacred trust for this country.” Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian reporter who brought to light the PRISM program and the separate program to gather US phone records, said the public had a right to know and openly debate what the government was doing.

What is Prism? The NSA uses a program called PRISM to gather data trails left by targeted foreign citizens using the Internet outside the United States. RECYCLING

No scrapping these pieces of art Discarded material turned into useful products that are eye-catching and user-friendly. SHILPA RAINA feedback@postnoon.com NEW DELHI: How would it look if the worn out motherboard of a computer becomes your coaster or the headlight of a bike turns into your desk lamp or tyre tube used as a wallet and the door of an old refrigerator as the centre table of your room? This is not wild imagination but creative ways of using scrap and making it look chic. Recycling and reuse have become quite a trend as many entrepreneurs found innovative ways to make “ugly look beautiful”.

AROUND THE

NATION

Now, upcycling is fast catching up. It involves converting discarded material or waste into useful products or something that is eye-catching and userfriendly. “There are two aspects to recycling: downcycling and upcycling. Downcycling is recycling an existing product to make the same product out of it, which is of lower value and quality. Through upcycling you move up the value chain and come to

realise that trash is not ugly,” Madhvi Khaitan, founder and director of WorkshopQ, told IANS. She along with Radhika Khaitan (no kin) began their online portal in April 2010 driven by the bug of creating awareness and contributing to the environment. They churn out quirky and innovative products like trays, coasters, photoframes, placemats, pen stands, card-holders, tissue boxes, lamps, chandeliers, mirrors and office accessories all from scrap. The products are priced between `50 and `7,000. Radhika said their emphasis is on the utility of the product. “We have to think out-of-the-box to lure people,” she said. According to Natasha Bohra, founder of Chromakey, scrap needs a lot of treatment and thinking. “The designers have to experiment and come up with the final product after many hits and misses. The competition is growing in this niche segment; so brainstorming is necessary,” Bohra told IANS over the phone from Mumbai. “Usually we throw away scrap but if one looks at it in a creative manner it can be turned chic. This is what we are doing. Making ugly look beautiful,” she added. Chromakey offers desklamps

made of motorbike headlights, coasters made of worn out motherboards, et al. The products are priced between `500 and `30,000. Taking this green movement a step forward is Vimlendu Jha, who has opened an office entirely made out of waste. Jha is the founder of Swechha, an NGO involved in environmental and social development issues and greenthegap.com, its ecofashion arm. Everything in Jha’s new office, ranging from storage space and partitions to lamp shades, is made out of trash. From cassette covers and paint boxes, to bicycle and motorbike parts, the NGO has used them all for decoration. The two-storey office spread

over a 36,000 sq foot area cost `300,000. It would have otherwise cost `15 lakh. Thanks to the organised scrap market in the country, there are no hassles in sourcing raw material. All these innovators faced one common problem: Convincing people to buy their products. “The only way out to change this was our stylish designs and proving to people that being ecofriendly can also mean lots of fun. This process will definitely take time, but we feel that India is soon going to be on the same level as the western countries when it comes to green products,” Madhvi added. IANS

SYRIAN CONFLICT

a link, and suddenly hackers are one step closer to snatching sensitive information — including passwords to a company’s social media sites. It’s an old trick, but one effectively deployed time and again by the Syrian Electronic Army in recent months. The supporters of Syrian President Bashar alAssad’s regime have duped numerous Western media outlets into handing over the electronic keys to their Facebook, Twitter and other accounts, leaving many organisations red-faced and scrambling to regain control of their social media streams. The group’s aim: to spread counterrevolutionary propaganda and hit back at news outlets it says slant their reporting.

All sides in Syria’s war have used social media to try to drum up support and document atrocities being inflicted on an almost daily basis. Opposition groups were quick to build Facebook pages and post videos depicting gruesome acts by regime forces,

but the SEA, as it calls itself - has pushed back in the high-stakes battle to shape public opinion in the West. Victims of SEA hacks include the AP, AFP photo department’s Twitter account, the BBC, Al Jazeera, the Financial Times and the Guardian. Even US satirical news site the Onion was hijacked, and on Wednesday the SEA said it had hacked into a Turkish government site. Compromised accounts often link to images or reports of abuses apparently carried out by opposition forces. The SEA was quick to try to capitalise on gruesome videos filmed this year apparently showing opposition fighters executing regime troops. Another video purportedly

shows a rebel cutting out a dead soldier’s heart and biting into it. The SEA spokesman, who identified himself only by his online name, Th3Pr0, said the group had thousands of members, mostly young people, who live in Syria and operate as volunteers. Tareq Al-Jazairi, an activist who lives in Istanbul and is now affiliated with the opposition Syrian National Council, said he knows several people who work for the SEA and are paid between $500 and $1,000 a month. The hackers are based in Syria and Dubai, he said. AFP

SOLAR POWER

PRUDHVI RAJU K prudhvi.k@postnoon.com

A

ny subsidy scheme promoted by government should reach the needy. If it reaches only certain section of people, the purpose of the scheme can not be achieved. The proposed Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission to encourage offgrid applications through subsidy could not reach the domestic users who want to be self dependent for their energy needs in this huge power crisis. “One roadblock in the process is the amount of subsidy allocated under scheme. The MNRE allocated `46.8 crore from national clean energy fund to NABARD with effect from March 2012 for period of one year. This capital amount is low compared to the demand. This has to be significantly increased for this current year to reach the large number of rural and urban population,” says NMKD Sarma Ambatipudi, founder, Bharat Synergy. “The power crisis is so huge in states like Bihar and UP compared to South Indian states. Many villages in there can only count the number of hours they

get power than vice versa. This gave rise to huge response from the rural people of UP to buy applications under the scheme. For instance, in our own state, there is heavy demand for solar PV system from the villagers of Chittoor district whereas less than 200 consumers only can buy solar systems under subsidy scheme through Saptagiri Gramin Bank due to least allocated subsidy. “Irrespective of state, consumers want to get out of this power crisis by installing own solar PV systems. However, the limit to benefit few people worries them. In order to benefit

large section of people, there is desperate need to increase the capital subsidy amount allocation,” he says. He further adds, “This benefit can be linked to Aadhar and has to be scaled like subsidy benefit while buying LPG cylinders.” As the scheme is implemented through banks, it only benefits the customers of the banks who are actively implementing the scheme. (like Regional Rural Banks in this case). If banks show disinterest, people around the area will have suffer from it. “There is greater need for even the private banks to active-

ly offer such schemes. They can charge the PLR interest for such loans under priority sector lending, which will be profitable,” he adds. “Initiative taken by Indian Overseas Bank to lend for solar systems under the name of IOB Surya is laudable. Now, it’s a matter of other banks to follow the suit. For instance, it was only after HDFC which has belled the cat first to offer housing loans, other banks have realised the need to offer loan for buying a home. Today, housing loans is one of the biggest portfolio of any bank. We should see such change ,” he says. “Banks can learn from the success of IDCOL loan programme in Bangladesh, which is in fact the world’s largest solar loan programme. In a small country like Bangladesh, more than 50,000 systems get financed every month on month through a vast network of more than 300 plus loan providers who get funds from IDCOL. Likewise, active participation from banks coupled with increase in capital subsidy amount will bring light and suffice the energy needs of the masses of this country,” he concludes.

JERUSALEM: Google is in talks on a deal worth at least $1 billion to buy the Israel-based GPS mobile navigation app Waze, Israeli media reported on Sunday. Haaretz newspaper said on its website that the two companies had agreed terms and were about to sign for a price “exceeding $1 billion”. Business daily Globes said the purchase price was $1.3 billion. Neither report identified its sources. “We don’t comment on rumour and speculation,” a Google spokesman told AFP about the Israeli media reports. There have been previous reports that first Apple and then Facebook wanted to acquire the Israeli start-up. Globes said that those deals fell through partly because Waze insisted that its local staff be kept on.

RUPEE HITS RECORD LOW MUMBAI: Rupee hit a record low of 57.54 against the dollar on Monday on growing demand for dollars among oil importers, while the greenback was also boosted by upbeat US jobs data. The partially convertible rupee hit its previous low of 57.32 against the dollar on June 28 last year. On Monday it fell to a new record low before trading up slightly at 57.49 later in the morning. The finance ministry today said there is an unwarranted panic in the market and hoped it will settle down in a some time. “If you see weakening of all currency vis-a-vis dollar, rupee is also not unaffected in that sense. But I think this is panic (in) the market which is unwarranted,” economic affairs secretary Arvind Mayaram told reporters. This, he said, started off with misinterpretation of what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke had said in terms of Quantitative Easing recently. Chief economic adviser Raghuram Rajan said the weakness in rupee could be a temporary phenomenon.

ailed for nearly two decades for his struggle against the junta, veteran dissident Win Tin says Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement must not forget its role as the opposition, despite the country’s dramatic political changes. Since he was released from prison in 2008, the National League for Democracy (NLD) party which he co-founded 25 years ago with Aung San Suu Kyi has been transformed into a legitimate political force in the fledgling parliament. Suu Kyi, who is eyeing a run for the presidency in 2015, has adopted a more cooperative approach with the country’s two-year-old reformist government, and was even seen sitting alongside top generals at a military parade in March. Win Tin, 84, says the NLD remains firmly united behind the Nobel laureate, but alluded to some doubts within the party about her strategy. “She is the supreme leader and a very capable leader. She is the only one that can keep Myanmar united and who could bring democracy,” he said in an interview with AFP at his home in Yangon. “We must support her but we must not forget we are in the opposition,” he added. “She wants to be the president after the elections,” Win Tin said. “People seem to think there is no opposition... I cannot accept that idea.” “She is a political animal and she has always been,” said Win Tin, who served much of his sentence in solitary confinement. “She wants to lead (the country) with the military... she has a very high opinion of them,” he added.

We woke up to hear yet another mega scam called Coalgate, where the ruling Congress setup is accused of snapping up `1.86 lakh Crore or something money that belonged to the people of this country. The whole issue was buried quickly under another scam, courtesy the railway minister’s. And, before we got details of the sleazy rail affair rolled in the mother of all scandals—IPL spot fixing where the idols and icons came unstuck from their high

pedals and crumbled, bringing with them plaster along with the chief of the BCCI. The chief had mud and plaster all over him, but it did not matter, because he knew the new waves are washing up shore and would swallow it all. Right, he was. There came in the stunning story from Gujarat of the Congress party’s humiliating defeat. All the six seats, four Assembly and two Lok Sabha held earlier by the Congress was wrested by Narendra Modi without even campaigning for it! Smarting under the beatings, the Congress was looking around for an escape route when the party that defeated it came itself with the rescue plan. In the Great Expectations story of the wannabe ruling party of the country, the BJP provided the comic relief to the Congress with its soap opera of Modi affairs where the Grand Old Pitamaha, Lal Krishna Advani, played the role of Bhisma with finesse. His lying on the bed of pikes with moral indignation was a greater story for the besieged Congress than its own feat of ‘lakh-crore’ scam. They went to town tom-tomming of the BJP’s end.

IT SUITS THEM ALL

Life and living constantly under the gaze of the Argus-eyed media is something this age has

to handle. And, as the lightening speed of events dazzled the human eye, the crafty elite finds it convenient. They know that whatever the atrocity, public memory is becoming shorter and shorter and they have nothing much to worry. Since the march of time is something man has not yet learnt to manipulate, I suggest that the leading media open a ‘scam column’ everyday with the headline, “mammoth scams as yet unresolved.” This would play on the brains and the public memory discs so that the issues are not buried under new waves of events. It would not be long before manipulative mind of man will find a way to twist the time and tweak the news. Till

then, the above simple measure may help. This is particularly ideal for a messy democracy like that of ours.

TAILEND

The apocryphal story goes that a man with elephantiasis on his one leg buried it under the sand and made fun of an approaching man afflicted with the dreaded disease on both his legs, and the former cried with delight, “Ha...ha... there goes the elephant-legged Johnny....and laughed aloud. One is reminded of the story when one watches the antics of the Congress that accuses the BJP, conveniently forgetting that it has got both its legs afflicted while the BJP has one.

He says his “sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them”. Snowden will have to brace for tough times and he may be expected to man up to the occasion. For long we have suspected something of this kind was going on. Now we are sure. But those who live honestly have nothing to fear. Yes, there is infringement of privacy, but it must not be forgotten that the programmes in question helped bust two terror plots, both in 2009. Amid the hue and cry, let’s get something clear: in today’s world, you may not take anything for granted, especially when it comes to security: but the people have a right to know what the government is doing, for them and against them.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR HEART: PART I

T

he heart is one of the most important organs of our body, playing a vital role in blood circulation. Our heart weighs about 200 t0 425 grams and is slightly larger than the size of our fist (Texas Heart Institute). There are four chambers in the heart. The upper two are called atria, and the lower two ventricles. Ventricles pump blood from the heart to other parts of the body and atria receive blood from other parts of the body to the heart. A typical heart cycle consists of the following: The deoxygenated blood from various organs is collected in the left atrium, which then pumps this blood to the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve. The pulmonary artery carries this blood to the lungs, where the blood becomes rich in oxygen by the process of diffusion. The pulmonary veins then carry this oxygenated blood to the left atrium, which then pumps it to the left ventricle through

19

the bicuspid valve. From there, the aorta carries oxygenated blood to all other parts of the body. Various arteries branch out to carry oxygenated blood. The de-oxygenated blood is collected by the veins and brought to the superior and inferior vena cava, from where is again goes to the right atrium, and the process continues. When the ventricles contract to pump blood to the body, it’s called systole, when they relax to allow blood to flow in, it’s called diastole. The “lub” and “dub” sounds of the heart are produced in this manner—the former when the tricuspid and bicuspid valves close at the beginning of systole, and the latter when the aortic and pulmonary valves close at the end of systole. The sinoatrial node is called the pacemaker of the heart and generates and impulse to set the rate at which cardiac muscles contract.

What’s part of your heart? Do you know how one of the most important organs of our body — and the most eulogized one — the heart, functions? We take a look at the basic mechanisms of a heart cycle.

U R Meditation is a free meditation app by Tejgyan Global Foundation that helps you learn and practice complete meditation in Hindi or English as taught by Sirshree. It is designed for both beginners and advanced meditators. The app helps you understand and benefit from mediation. itunes.apple.com

Achalasia means that your gullet has lost its ability to move food along and the valve at the end of your gullet fails to open to allow food to pass into your stomach. As a result, food gets stuck in your gullet and is often brought back up. Symptoms of achalasia may start at any time of life and usually come on gradually. The underlying disease cannot be cured, but there are various ways to improve symptoms. nhs.uk

Parsley is useful as a digestive aid. It helps to purify the blood and stimulate the bowels. It is an anticarcinogen and three times as much vitamin C as oranges, and twice as much iron as spinach. For a natural breath freshener, try a sprig of parsley. It contains vitamin A and is a good source of copper and manganese. mercola.com

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who became known as the founding father of psychoanalysis. Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association (in which patients report their thoughts without reservation) and discovered transference (the process in which patients displace on to their analysts feelings derived from their childhood sexual experiences and fantasies). en.wikipedia.org

Spain hesitates on abortion reform

The right-leaning government had promised to reinforce protection of the right to life, and pass stricter abortion laws. ROLAND LLOYD PARRY Agence France-Presse

D

espite ramming through austerity measures that sparked popular protest in the streets, Spain’s right-leaning government seems to be hesitating on a potentially more divisive reform: tightening the abortion law. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party promised, in a manifesto ahead of its 2011 victory, “to reinforce protection of the right to life”. That was a nod to opponents of a landmark 2010 reform by the former Socialist

government, which brought Spain into line with much of Europe by letting women freely opt for abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. But nearly 18 months after the Popular Party took power, the justice ministry, which is in charge of the reform, has still not drawn up any proposals. “There is a lot of speculation that it is being slowed down by differences of opinion in the party itself and in the government,” said Ferran Requejo, a political scientist at Pompeu Fabra University. “There is resistance in the party because they can’t agree on the criteria for aborting and there is no agreement in the

government because of the image it gives of Spain.” Before 2010, abortion was a crime in Spain except in cases of rape, risk to the mother's health or deformation of foetus. Justice minister Alberto Gallardon has indicated in interviews and in parliament that he wants to return to a law similar to that one, but also to go further, curbing abortions in cases of deformation. A study published last month in centre-left newspaper El Pais indicated that 46 per cent of Spaniards favoured keeping the law in its current form while 41 per cent wanted a stricter system such as that planned by Gallardon.

While feminists have traditionally rejected the bikini round as a sexist and derogatory part of the competition, the ban has not come as a relief for many. Most writers and bloggers have focused on the fact that the move came mainly not to ruffle conservative feathers, not because of what women thought.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

TMZ reports Bieber and his entourage were kicking it at a hookah lounge in Hollywood when a starstruck bystander decided to snap a pic. The bodyguard attempted to stop the fan from taking pictures and a scuffle ensued. The snap-happy fan called the cops, but Bieber and his people had already bolted by the time police arrived on the scene. Bieber himself is not considered a suspect in the battery investigation, though battering bystanders seems to have become a trend in Bieberland. Earlier this week, while in Miami, Bieber and his crew were involved in three separate altercations with picture takers, including one that was caught on tape. On the recording, Justin can be heard dropping an F-bomb and ordering his bodyguard to steal a man’s photography equipment.

Foret, Sofuoglu are on second spot in the overall standings. NEW DELHI: Mahi Racing Team India riders Fabien Foret and Kenan Sofuoglu stayed on course for a shot at the overall championship as they finished second and third respectively in the sixth leg of World Supersport Championship at Portimao, Portugal on Sunday. Foret, who began the race in fourth place, leapfrogged two riders to finish with a timing of 35’33.262. Sofuoglu, who started the race in second place, completed the podium party with a timing of 35’33.384. Both the riders are now tied on second spot in the overall standings with 81 points each and trail leader Sam Lowes of Yakhnich Motorsport by 39 points. Lowes took his fourth successive chequered flag on Sunday

but Foret isn’t really worried. “It is still early in the season and we can easily bridge this gap. He (Lowes) has hit a purple patch but we are not far behind,” said the confident Foret.

Though Sofuoglu finished third, he registered the fastest lap of the race on the 12th lap when he set a timing of 145.730 and held the lead for four of the 20 laps of the race. PTI

MIAMI: Mario Chalmers (right) had a game-high 19 points and LeBron James finished with 17 points and seven assists as the Miami Heat routed the San Antonio Spurs 103-84 in game two of the NBA finals on Sunday. Miami went on a 14-3 run to close the third quarter and break open a tight game, then seized command with a sustained double-digit lead in the fourth to level the best-ofseven series at one game each. James, who had just 18 points in game one, finished with a 2013 post-season low again but he scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter for the Heat who rebounded from a stunning 92-88 loss at home in game one. Chris Bosh finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds and veteran Ray Allen came

off the bench to score 13 points for Miami, who have not lost back-to-back games since early January and haven’t lost consecutive games at home all season. Danny Green had 17 points, including making fiveof-five from three point range.

New Zealand pip Sri Lanka to win humdinger Nervy Kiwis survive Lasith Malinga scare to register dramatic win in low-scoring match. KULDIP LAL Agence France-Presse CARDIFF: New Zealand survived a hostile spell from slingarm fast bowler Lasith Malinga (in pic) to carve out a tense onewicket win over Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy on Sunday. The Black Caps messed up a simple chase of Sri Lanka’s 138 all out and were reduced to 1228, before the last-wicket pair of Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan saw them through in the 37th over. Left-arm seamer McClenaghan set up the victory with 4-43 after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat, but Malinga stole the thunder with 4-34 that almost secured his team an improbable victory. The dramatic win helped New Zealand end a six-match losing streak against the Sri Lankans and claim full points in their first match of the eightnation tournament. New Zealand were cruising at 48-1 when Sri Lanka hit back with three wickets for one run in the space of eight deliveries. When James Franklin fell leg-

2 Lankans pulled up for excessive appealing CARDIFF: Former Sri Lankan captains Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan have been reprimanded for appealing excessively during Sunday’s tense Champions Trophy clash against New Zealand. The International Cricket Council said the two players had pleaded guilty to a level one breach of that part of the Code of Conduct which relates to “excessive appealing during an international match." “Dilshan and Jayawardena were charged for excessive and prolonged appealing in a keenly-contested match that New Zealand won by one wicket," the ICC stated.

before to Tillakaratne Dilshan in the 15th over, New Zealand had lost half their side for 70 runs. Nathan McCullum, who followed his two wickets with a defiant 32, put on 35 for the seventh wicket with his brother Brendon, before Malinga removed both batsmen in three balls to make it 122-8. The ninth wicket of Kyle Mills fell when five runs were needed, and even though Malinga conceded just one run in the next over, Dilshan gave away four runs to seal the Black Caps’ win. “I was incredibly nervous at one stage," a relieved New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said at the presentation ceremony. “Sri Lanka are always a dangerous side and we panicked a bit in the middle. “The ball started stopping a bit in the second innings. It was very important to scrape through. We have enough experience to deal with situations like this, although it did get tough towards the end. “But I thought we played well for the majority of the match. Our bowlers were the rea-

McCullum flew to his left at second slip to pick up a brilliant catch off Mills. “We probably needed 30-40 more runs," said Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews. “This was not the 200-run wicket that we originally thought, but we still need to toughen up a bit. “Malinga almost won it for us. We have two more games and we need to tighten up in batting. The bowlers and fielders showed good character." son that we won the game today." Sri Lanka, who had won 10 of their last 11 completed 50over games against New Zealand, let themselves down with a sloppy batting display in the first session. Veteran Kumar Sangakkara played a lone hand for the Islanders with 68, his 75th one-day halfcentury, but five of the other six toporder batsmen failed to reach double figures as the team folded in 37.5 overs. Sri Lanka never recovered after losing Kusal Perera off the first ball of the match when Brendon

Anderson betters Gough BIRMINGHAM: James Anderson (in pic) may be getting used to making history but he derived special pleasure in breaking Darren Gough’s record to become England’s most successful one-day bowler. The 30-year-old Lancashire pacemen, who last month became only the fourth England bowler to take 300 Test wickets, started the hosts’ Champions Trophy opener against Australia at Edgbaston on Saturday tied with retired Yorkshire quick Gough on 234 one-day international wickets. But that changed when he had Mitchell Marsh caught by Eoin Morgan at point. What really pleased Anderson, who finished with three for 30 to take his tally to 237 ODI wickets, though was that his haul helped England to a 48-run victory.

“It’s good fun breaking records, and I’m delighted with this one, but more importantly we’re delighted to get off to a winning start in this tournament," Anderson said. “Although it’s a bit different to reaching 300 Test wickets last month, it still means a lot because I started my international career in one-day cricket, and I’m very happy with what

I’ve achieved since then," added Anderson, whose first ODI wicket, on his debut, was that of Australia’s Adam Gilchrist at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 15, 2002. “Funnily enough, I probably got the wicket which broke Goughie’s record with the worst ball I bowled all day," Anderson explained.

England’s top ODI bowlers 237 — James Anderson (170 matches) 234 — Darren Gough (158 matches) 168 — Andrew Flintoff (138 matches) 155 — Stuart Broad(98matches) 145 — Ian Botham (116 matches) 115 — Phil DeFreitas (103 matches) 111 — Paul Collingwood (197 matches) 103 — Graeme Swann (78 matches)

Do-or-die match for Pak

JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq (right) tried to take the pressure off his side by insisting a ‘do-or-die’ Champions Trophy clash against South Africa was nothing new for the team. Both sides need to win Monday’s day/night clash at Edgbaston if they are to have a realistic chance of reaching the semi-finals of a tournament for the world’s top eight one-day nations. Pakistan suffered a two-wicket loss against the West Indies in their low-scoring Group B opener at The Oval on Friday, a day after South Africa went down by 26 runs against India in Cardiff. Monday’s match is also nicely set-up in that the strength of South Africa, set to be without both their injured quicks Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, now appears to be their batting with Pakistan’s trump card their bowling attack. In March, South Africa beat Pakistan 3-2 in a home one-day series but only after Misbah’s men levelled at 2-2. “It’s not a new story for us," Misbah told reporters at Edgbaston on Sunday. “In South Africa, we were in a similar situation like that in the ODI series, when we had to win the fourth ODI and our team did exceptionally well with that. “The best thing you can do is to take it game by game, and tomorrow is a game and you just need to win that." Against the West Indies, only Misbah — with a career-best 96

ABD hopes for Mandela century BIRMINGHAM: South Africa one-day captain AB de Villiers (below) said on Sunday that just as batsmen always wanted to make a hundred so too did he hope that Nelson Mandela reached a century of birthdays. “He’s a legend in our country," de Villiers, speaking at the Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham, central England, where South Africa play Pakistan in a Champions Trophy one-day international match on Monday, said of Mandela. “I wish him well and I hope he recovers really soon, and he can maybe still make a difference in our country in the next few years to come, and maybe even get that big 100 when it comes to birthdays. So we’re hoping he gets better soon," the 29-year-old said. AFP

not out — and opener Nasir Jamshed (50) made it into double figures. The 39-year-old Misbah said he did not mind shouldering the burden but was understandably keen for the rest of the top order to get runs. “This is a trend of passing teams over the years. I think before it was Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf. “So, as a senior player, you have to take the responsibility, but it’s really good if some of the other guys come to the party and do their job." But the saving grace for Pakistan against the West Indies was the performance of a bowling attack that so nearly pulled

Steyn set to miss Pakistan clash South Africa are set to to be without Dale Steyn once again at the Champions Trophy when they face Pakistan at Edgbaston on Monday. Steyn, widely regarded as the best fast bowler currently in world cricket, missed the Proteas’ opening 26-run Group B defeat by India in Cardiff on Thursday with a side strain. Captain AB de Villiers was pessimistic about Steyn’s chances of facing Pakistan.

what would have been an extraordinary victory given they had so few runs to defend. The towering Mohammad Irfan (3 for 32) and fellow leftarm seamer Wahab Riaz (2 for 42) both posed problems, the pair the latest models off Pakistan’s now seemingly inexhaustible production line of fast bowlers. There was a time when Pakistan, in common with the rest of the sub-continent, was regarded as a ‘graveyard’ for fast bowlers but Misbah said the tough conditions, which led Imran Khan, and later Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, to develop reverse swing, had created a special breed of pacemen.

Bring on India, says Windies’ Bravo KULDIP LAL Agence France-Presse LONDON: West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo (right) is confident of containing India’s batting when the two sides meet in a key Champions Trophy match at the Oval on Tuesday. The winner is almost certain to take one of the two semi-final berths from group B after both teams won their opening games, albeit in contrasting fashion. India, the reigning World Cup champions, brushed aside injury-hit South Africa by 26 runs in Cardiff after an impres-

sive batting display saw them post a commanding 331-7. The West Indies shot Pakistan out for 170 at the Oval on Friday, but then showed their vulnerability while batting as they lost eight wickets while chasing the modest target. All-rounder Bravo, who replaced Darren Sammy as one-day captain ahead of the tournament, said the close result did not worry him as his side prepared to face the inform Indians. “We came out on top and that’s more important," said Bravo. “It does not matter if

you lose eight or nine wickets, we got the two points that we wanted." Bravo, whose side beat Sri Lanka by 17 runs in a practice match in Edgbaston last week, said winning two games in a row was the right moralebooster ahead of tougher encounters. Bravo, who plays for Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, said the West Indies had the resources to take the world champions in their stride. “It’s another tough game against a team whose strength

lies is their batting," he said. “But we have the right bowlers to control their batting. “Cricket is played on the day. India could turn up on Tuesday and be knocked over, or score a big total again as they normally do. “I have the right attack if I want to go with someone with raw pace. I have the reserve bench that is strong enough to actually come up with the 11 that I think will do well against the Indians." Bravo said the opening win against Pakistan added to the joy of captaining the West Indies.
